- 4:07A and, you know, a not so good place and these games and these
- 4:11activities and being able to, to come and, and have the
- 4:15camaraderie that we have here. It, it, it makes me feel like,
- 4:19you know, I'm not, I'm not alone.
- 4:20There are people here that have been through what I, I've been
- 4:23through. It makes me feel like, I don't
- 4:26know, like, like I'm, I'm part of something great.
- 4:51We're OM We're at the 10th Annual Elizabeth Dole
- 4:54Foundation's convening event here at the Reagan Center in
- 4:58Washington, DC And my next guest is Heidi.
- 5:02These stories that you have heard from Michael Corman,
- 5:05Joseph Kavanaugh and Heidi's next will really change the way
- 5:09you look at care, love, family. It's just been really impactful.
- 5:13Heidi, welcome to OM Radio. Thank you.
- 5:16Thank you for having me. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 5:18It's just an honor to be here with the word heroes thrown
- 5:22around everywhere. You know, you, you, you dunk a
- 5:24basketball, you're a hero. You, you do this, you're a hero.
- 5:28You know, I'm a hero to my kids when I get the Internet right.
- 5:31But I've been like humbled to talk to you all who are true
- 5:36heroes. How did your caregiver journey
- 5:38begin? So in December of 23, my
- 5:44daughter, who is an active duty Army officer, I had just
- 5:48graduated from the physician assistant program in San
- 5:51Antonio, had come home for Christmas break and then was
- 5:55driving to her first assignment for her clinicals.
- 5:59And she was in a horrible, horrible car accident,
- 6:01catastrophic severe brain injury, called us because she
- 6:05would be dead by morning. So of course we rushed to be
- 6:10with her, spent the time in the trauma hospital.
- 6:14And then, and I don't want to go off in a tangent, but it it adds
- 6:18to the story, I think, because we're military.
- 6:21Are you sure? Right.
- 6:22Yes. Where'd you serve?
- 6:24I was Army National Guard but deployed to Iraq during the OIF
- 6:283. So her accident was in
- 6:32Baltimore. Right car accident so she was
- 6:35taken first to Baltimore. Shock Trauma where they saved
- 6:39her life, but then after three or four days on life support,
- 6:45told us that she wasn't going to make it.
- 6:48We should take her off life support and just let her go.
- 6:53And after, you know, praying about it and thinking about it
- 6:56and you know, what do we do? Someone dear to me from Walter
- 7:01Reed came over and stepped in and she was like, don't, don't
- 7:05take that answer. The Army is here to help you.
- 7:08We're going to do everything we can.
- 7:10Move her from here to Walter Reed and don't give up hope.
- 7:15Had I not had that, first of all, we probably wouldn't have
- 7:20Vanessa with me. But we did do that.
- 7:22She was transferred to Walter Reed, had a long, long recovery.
- 7:27And now what, 16 months later is doing way better than expected.
- 7:34So being in the military, you know, they, they did a great job
- 7:40of taking care of her, but it was hard to know what I should
- 7:46be doing to help them take care of her.
- 7:48Can I ask a different kind of question?
- 7:50Yes. So I talked to a Gold Star
- 7:53mother recently who lost her son.
- 7:57Not only did did your daughter go through this, but you serve,
- 8:00you know what the, the, what the game is and the cost is.
- 8:04But now you're seeing your flesh and blood in this state.
- 8:07Did you feel a sense of, of you're powerless?
- 8:10You can't help it. Well, and I, I'm, yeah, military
- 8:14medical at the top of the. So you know at the top.
- 8:17Of the scheme. So yeah, it was tough.
- 8:20I've never been on the recipient side, I've always been on the
- 8:23one taking care of people. So this is all new to.
- 8:27You all new So anyway, back to the story is that they're taking
- 8:32care of her, but I don't know where to get resources to help
- 8:36take care of us while we're taking care of her housing.
- 8:39And you know, we're from Idaho. This happened in Baltimore.
- 8:43So now we're flying people back and forth and trying to be with
- 8:46her and save her life. And, and it wasn't so the
- 8:50accident was in December. It wasn't until June that a
- 8:55nonprofit, Semper Fi, invited my husband and I to a caretaker
- 8:59retreat or caregiver retreat that I learned what is out there
- 9:05for the actually for the people taking care of my daughter.
- 9:08The hospital is taking care of her.
- 9:10We all need some kind of counseling or the family's going
- 9:13to fall apart. We need to just get away from
- 9:16it. The retreat helped us with that,
- 9:20but while we were there, I met several people that were, had
- 9:25been or are fellows at the Dole Foundation.
- 9:28So I Facebook friend them and watch what they're doing.
- 9:32And I started to realize that like, no, there's nobody in the
- 9:35hospital that told me about this foundation that would know
- 9:38nothing about it without other caregivers, right?
- 9:42And so I looked at what some of them were doing and, and the
- 9:47part of my professional life I'm missing.
- 9:51And I thought, well, I'll do that someday.
- 9:54But then I thought, why don't I do it now?
- 9:56They're in DC, I'm in Bethesda building 62.
- 10:00The soldier recovery unit has hundreds of, you know, I don't
- 10:05know how many people are there now, but many people getting
- 10:09Care now and their families are going through the same thing.
- 10:13I went through even this morning, well looking away, but
- 10:17even this morning while I'm here, I got a text from one of
- 10:21those mothers saying I never knew this was out there and
- 10:25they're in Bethesda. This is right across the river,
- 10:28yeah. I didn't either, but I'm going
- 10:31to help all of you learn more about it.
- 10:33What? Was it like Hottie when you
- 10:35realized that you weren't alone in this and you had the support
- 10:39around? You so, so much of A relief.
- 10:42Not not only did I not, I mean, of course, I know I'm not alone,
- 10:49but what you learn from other caregivers that the, that the
- 10:53medical system never gives you is unfathomable.
- 10:59You know, I feel there's a part of me that, you know, I'm
- 11:03retired. Well, I've retired because of
- 11:05her injury, but I'm retired military.
- 11:08I have an income. I'm not, you know, I don't
- 11:11necessarily need financial support.
- 11:13I'm not looking for charity. I don't even need a lot of what
- 11:17the nonprofit's offer by ways of trips and retreat.
- 11:22But I need the information that the people at those retreats are
- 11:27giving up. You know, little things like
- 11:30where do you take your loved one when they're to the rehab point
- 11:35where they need to learn how to drive again?
- 11:38The military, the VA doesn't do that for you.
- 11:41But you know who does? Semper Fi, I think either Semper
- 11:46Fi or Wounded Warrior. One of them has an end to, you
- 11:49know, where do you go to get adjustments made to your car?
- 11:52My daughter can't use her right arm.
- 11:55She's slowly getting better in every way.
- 11:58But just for the fun of it, I had her just sit in the car one
- 12:01day and say, you know, tell me, tell me what it's like to drive.
- 12:05What are you going to do? And she started, and the first
- 12:07thing I realized was she can't even start the car because her
- 12:10arm doesn't work, you know? But these are things the
- 12:14hospital doesn't tell you, but fellow caregivers.
- 12:16Does that make sense? It makes sense.
- 12:19I mean, they're just focusing the patient, not all the stuff
- 12:22after care. So you know that this whole
- 12:26convening talks about, you know, they've got 4 pillars they're
- 12:30working on, but the one that really speaks to me is the one
- 12:32that integrates the healthcare systems.
- 12:37So they do know that information.
- 12:40Yeah, because I, I mean, like, you go to the hostel sometimes
- 12:44and you get a sort of paper saying do this, this, this and
- 12:46this. Yeah, it sounds like even in
- 12:49Michael's case, you don't get a whole lot.
- 12:51No, it's just you don't. Really get much you get great
- 12:54care. I'm I will never say that she
- 12:56hasn't gotten great care. But, you know, like Michael
- 12:59Corman was talking about how the house had to be redone for his
- 13:03father-in-law. You know, I didn't think about a
- 13:05car. Yeah, I, I didn't either.
- 13:07But you know who did? The other caregivers that have
- 13:09been there, the car is one of the big things, but just like,
- 13:16you know, once she was able to get out of the hospital and move
- 13:19around a little, there's several places that have, you know,
- 13:23retreats and places you can go just to connect with nature, get
- 13:28out and walk. I wouldn't know about any of
- 13:31this if it wasn't for other caregivers, and I don't, I had
- 13:36never heard of anything like the Elizabeth Dole Foundation that
- 13:42can collect those caregivers and match you up with people.
- 13:45So the way they do it is that I'm assigned to Idaho because
- 13:49that's where I'm from. So I represent Idaho, but
- 13:52there's nothing to say I can't go back to Bethesda where I am,
- 13:56which is what I plan to do, and just immediately start with all
- 13:59of those family members in the SRU.
- 14:02So both Michael and just talk about social media and its power
- 14:04to connect other caregivers, are you?
- 14:06Already working. Yeah, as soon as they enter, as
- 14:09soon as the Elizabeth Doyle Foundation, you know, published
- 14:14my picture and said welcome. Already getting people like, Oh
- 14:18my God, do we have this in Idaho?
- 14:21Do you know so and so can you? Can you help me?
- 14:24Where can I go for this? It I can't even begin to imagine
- 14:27as a parent, as a soldier yourself, what's been like for
- 14:31you and your family? What's it like now?
- 14:34You have the support from Elizabeth Doll Foundation, these
- 14:36other orgs to start seeing your daughter come back.
- 14:41What's that been like, Heidi? It's been amazing.
- 14:47You know, Joseph talked a little bit about the faith part of it.
- 14:52I mean, deep in my heart, I kind of always knew she would because
- 14:56I have faith and I and I, you know, I just know that she's
- 14:59coming back. But it's a pretty incredible.
- 15:06I don't want when I tell her story, I don't want pity.
- 15:09I don't like I said, I don't want financial resources.
- 15:12I want other people that understand what she needs, what
- 15:16we're going through. And I think another thing is
- 15:19that we focus on the caregiver. Like there's only one in our
- 15:24situation. It's not I had to, I'm employing
- 15:28one of her best friends from high school to be there.
- 15:31Like now when I'm not there, she goes to all of her appointments
- 15:34with her, kind of takes care of her.
- 15:37You know my husband, that we, my husband, my daughter who's still
- 15:40in college, collectively A caregiver.
- 15:45It's not just one person. So it's a team, Yeah.
- 15:47And there's a team effort all the way.
- 15:48And now you have support for that team so they can keep, you
- 15:52know, your daughter in the fight.
- 15:54Amazing. She's a warrior, isn't she?
- 15:56She really is. And I wish, I mean for what you
- 16:00do, I really wish that there was a time you could bring her on.
- 16:05Because she was a. She was an Iron Man, a full Iron
- 16:08Man triathlete, like brilliant, you know, NPA school going
- 16:13places. Everybody loves her.
- 16:16And then to see her life just changed so suddenly is
- 16:20heartbreaking. But as much as they said she
- 16:24would never be the same person, her bubbly personality and the
- 16:30like, everybody that sees her is like her smile lights up the
- 16:34room now. Even now with, you know, a star
- 16:37on her face and her difficulties with her arm and difficulties
- 16:41with walking, she's never become self-conscious about it.
- 16:44She smiles, she laughs. Anytime you call and say, how
- 16:48was your day? The first thing she says is
- 16:50awesome. I'm like, was it really awesome?
- 16:52Well, no, but then she'll kind of.
- 16:56Here's my promise to you, Heidi. Well, let me get to February
- 16:582020. Sixth, we'll keep in touch,
- 17:01please, and we will make that happen.
- 17:03It would be an. Honor, she would be to to.
- 17:05Come out, meet your daughter and let people understand the kind
- 17:08of warrior she is. Because the reason I say that is
- 17:11a lot of people get hurt and I've seen it happen where they
- 17:14just lose the fight internally for whatever reason.
- 17:18And then there's these people that stay in the fight and, and,
- 17:22and fight to get back and, and fight for everything they have.
- 17:25And I really align to that. It really resonates with me.
- 17:27And I think it would be absolutely, it would be an honor
- 17:30if you'd. Be the other thing I think that
- 17:32I should have mentioned earlier about my case is that I think at
- 17:36least from the people here, my daughter's may be the only one
- 17:39that's actually still active duty.
- 17:42Well, she's still active. Duty so a lot of caregivers
- 17:44don't learn about all of this stuff until years later, you
- 17:49know, so I'm fortunate because she hasn't been Med boarded yet
- 17:53to be learning from other people.
- 17:54Like make sure you get this and this and this before they Med
- 17:59board. Her OK, we're last couple
- 18:01questions. Yeah, why?
- 18:02Why hasn't the Army Med board and the Marine Corps couldn't
- 18:04wait to Med board me? They can't wait to Med board
- 18:07anybody, right? But well, first of all, I know
- 18:11the regulations just because I'm in Army medicine.
- 18:14But you know, they've got to help her get better first and
- 18:17and they aren't hesitating to do that.
- 18:20I haven't had any problems with the Army.
- 18:22So no one. Are they caregiver?
- 18:24Nobody's rushing her because I think they all know she's coming
- 18:28back. I I, I, I, I want to see that
- 18:31come back story. Awesome, awesome Heidi, you
- 18:34know, again, kind of like with Joseph where this this power of
- 18:37love really manifests itself. We have a mother's love, a
- 18:41soldiers love and this whole family team behind your daughter
- 18:46and now you have Elizabeth Dole foundation as part of this.
- 18:49Thank you for telling your story.
- 18:50Thank. You awesome.
- 18:52Thank you, Jennifer talking to us.
- 18:54Thank you, Travis. OM Radio again, we're at the
- 18:57Elizabeth Dole convening here in Washington, DC You've heard some
- 19:01really impactful stories from Michael, Joseph and now Heidi.
- 19:04And we as veterans, we as Americans can take action and
- 19:08support those who are giving care to our nation's heroes.
- 19:11Thank you so much. Just say OM Radio remission
- 19:13flight the biggest fear. Goldstra families have that
- 19:19their child will be forgotten. We need to never forget freedom
- 19:23wasn't free. The fact that they give us the
- 19:26life we have now, we should remember them and like give
- 19:29thanks to them. If I can be a part of something
- 19:31today that's going to make the surviving family of any of these
- 19:35veterans, these heroes, feel better tomorrow, then it's.
- 19:37Worth it. That one wreath symbolizes one
- 19:39family. One family that was able to
- 19:41smile because of DeGeneres donations.
- 19:43To. Sponsor A wreath and.
