- 0:06SPEAKER_01: Hi guys, welcome back to Single Care Anarchy.
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: This is your host, Dekta, and today I have an awesome guest once again.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: I am sure you have heard about this brand, especially with how COVID has been, and there's just been um, you know, so much out there that's there for hygiene and stuff.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: So, anyways, without further ado, I want to introduce you guys uh to Andrea Lisbona, who is the um founder of Touchland.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Um, and Touchland is known for their hand sanitizers.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: So, welcome to the show, Andrea.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: I'm so um happy and honored to host you.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: It's my pleasure.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Um, I would love to get started and learn about your um your journey.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: And I just, you know, how how did you come to a decision that you wanted to start a hand sanitizer line?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: So it started in when I was 24 years old in 2010.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Um, I've always been a great admirer of innovators such as like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk and companies like Nespresso or Dyson that truly have reinvented categories that were completely forgotten and making habits easier and and easier to use and smarter to use.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Um, so um, in regards to hand hygiene, at the end of the day, the easiest way to stay healthy is to keep your hands clean.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: That's that's that simple.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: 80% of infectious diseases are spread through hands.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: So when you're on the go, you're traveling, you're out having dinner with friends, most of the time you don't have water and soap available.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: So truly, hand sanitizers become your best ally on the go.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: And in 2010, um, I wanted to start my own project, and I realized that the hand sanitizer business was commoditized, antiquated, stale, um, everything on the market delivered a very pleasing experience.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: We all know that most of them smell like tequila and vodka, they can't use things.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: It's very sticky.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: So we said, of course, people don't want to sanitize their hands.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Like if we would create a product that is actually funny to use and great to use, people would sanitize their hands more often.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So that's the reason why we started.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And I think the name of the land stays in it's the land of touch, touchland.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: And what we wanted to do is just like empower people's connections and human connection and have people live fearlessly, curiously, passionately, but not recklessly.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's what what we wanted to do create smart solutions that make you go through life healthy and happy.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: And I and I know that, you know, um, especially with everything that's happened with COVID, you know, it's like, you know, I'm not gonna state the obvious, but it's it's been something that is a huge need, you know, in the in the market, in the industry.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: And I think that, you know, I can honestly say, as someone who's in the hospital a lot, you know, when you're using hand sanitizer, it starts getting sticky, like you said, and you know, it builds up.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: So that's one thing I really love about your products.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: And it's, you know, it's it's really about not just about hygiene, I think.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: It's more so also about, you know, you want to feel like you're taking care of your hands, you know, especially like medical professionals, for example, we're constantly washing our hands, constantly sanitizing.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: So I love that.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: I really love that.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: I love that you you you know even came out with this before COVID, because I know a lot of people were like, but there are all these new hand sanitizer sanitizer companies, you know what I mean, with COVID.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: We were we were pretty alone uh before COVID, and and at the end of the day, as you said, we wanted to create a formulation that was a skin forward um that not only meets the kills 99.9% of the germs, but at the same time, you don't have to sacrifice your skin.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Uh and so that's why we created our formula that hydrates, softens, it's big and cruelty-free, paramet-free, gluten-free.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: So truly through that skincare speech rather than the lenses of traditional hygiene products.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you know, that's uh it's actually wonderful that you have that hydration um, you know, aspect in there.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: So can you tell me a little bit about when you were formulating um your products?
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, because I know that hand sanitizer obviously has to have, you know, very strong bactericidal, very strong, you know, um uh like components in it, like alcohol is used very often.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: So, like when you were approaching this, you know, and we know the alcohol dries out the skin.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: So, like what what were some of the things you you had to like put forward to the lab so that you know uh you could create your products the way you wanted?
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Yes, so in regards to that, as as you said, like um as the FDA states and the CDC states, hand sanitizers have to have between 60 and 70 percent alcohol.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: That's the recommended.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: So, knowing that we had to start from there, I think the goal for the formula was first of all, simplicity.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Um, when you take a label um of hand sanitizers, you have like 30, 40 ingredients that sounds like very chemical.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: You don't know what you're putting into skin.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: So, our our approach was completely the opposite.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: We wanted to create a formula that was very simplistic.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: We were selecting consciously ingredients that met one specific um functionality.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: So we use lemon essential oil, lime essential oil, we use radish fruit ferment filtrate, we use aloe vera, we use like all sorts of ingredients, most of them are natural, to kind of like balance that that dehydration from alcohol and actually empower hydration.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Um we were actually the first, first and only hand sanitizer to be awarded with an allure best of beauty, because like people that use Touchland truly say it's not just about sanitizing, it's just my hands feel better and it feels velvet soft after you use it.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Um, so that was the that was the goal.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And when we did develop the formula, it was a lot of back and forth, like a little bit more of this, a little bit less than this, because most of the ingredients that are hydrating are very sticky.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: So we were like trying to balance like experience with performance, with quality, um, so we could get the perfect, the perfect balance.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think you've definitely achieved it, you know, and I completely agree with Allure's uh Allure's uh you know recommendation because yeah, your hand sanitizers, I've been using them uh every day.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: I have one in my you know, my white coat pocket when I go to work.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: So it's it's a wonderful, wonderful product.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: And I think, you know, for me also, um, you know, I'm not gonna lie, I love aesthetics, you know, when it comes to brands.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: I think that's a very important factor in us being able to, you know, stick to a routine and use a product daily.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: So um, how did you design the packaging?
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: Because the packaging is phenomenal.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so the packaging, it was actually designed first in 2014.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: We invested a lot in patents on design, and thank God we did, because last year we experienced more than 2,000 patent infringements.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: So we spent a lot of time enforcing our patents and everything.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: And we wanted to create, I think, like from the form factor, something that was not like that goopy gel experience.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: It seems like you're applying ketchup in your hands.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: So we created a mister.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Um, and then we did something that is leaked, something that can fit into everyone's pocket, doesn't it for everyone?
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: So we didn't want to create like a round sphere bottle or something that it's hard to put in your pocket.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: So that's when we designed um the bottle of Power Mist, which is very unique, and I got it for the band.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a it's a beautiful design, and I think you know, it just fits very well, like you said, in your pocket, and it almost feels like a little miniature phone.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you know it's right there.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love it.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: And you know, I honestly, you know, Andrea, I'm not gonna lie, I think it's absolutely brilliant what you've done because, you know, uh again with the COVID thing, having children and like young adults, and you know, people really get behind this idea of you know, regularly sanitize your hands, you know, make sure you're using your hand sanitizer like this many times a day.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Like that is a very hard thing to make you know, kids and young adults do.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: So by creating something that's so fashionable and so um, you know, you want to use the product, you want to, you know, reach for it.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: That's really brilliant.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: So I love that.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: I think that that was one of our goals.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Like um, hygiene hobbies, like most of the brands they do it through educational and all that, but we realize that the best way to enable people to to engage more and empower them more to use the product is to build something that they look forward to use.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: And that has been kind of like the viral coefficient for us.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Like everyone that buys the product, they say they say they come to us and they say, I convert all my family and friends into Touchland because they have the need to say, why are you living 100 years away?
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Like you have to level up and modernize and your hand sanitizer game.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, I am one of those people.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna lie, I've you know shared, I shared it with all my friends, my colleagues, you know, my family.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: So yeah, no, I mean, I think it's brilliant.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: And I actually want to um I want to talk to you about the some of the challenges or some of the you know hurdles you might have faced when COVID began.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: You know, um, were there changes to your company um and you know, just your approach and everything?
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Can you share any of that with us?
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so when we started in 2010, we actually experienced something similar with the swine flow.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: So we knew what was going to happen.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: We knew that there was going to be an amount of new hand sanitizers just opportunistically launching into the market to monetize on a pandemic.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: And at the end of the day, we started this for like a long-term vision and everything.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: So we focused on staying true to your to our values.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Um, we we actually took the decision, um, although we were sold out most of the time because we couldn't keep up with the with the demand that we had, um, and we had a lot of challenges.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: We decided that for every container that we're receiving, we were dedicating 5% to frontline workers.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Because at the end of the day, we had a product that truly could help during a very fearful time and tough time.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And so at the end of the day, some companies would have said, no, let's just like try to sell everything that we have.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: And we we want to build a company that is a powerhouse brand that goes beyond the pandemic.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: We did we never started for a pandemic, and we wanted to build something that is part of everyone's life.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Um, and and I think for us it was basically thinking long-term, making sure that we stay true to our values, that we don't, that we hire smart, that we grow smart and responsibly, because I think like it was like the fever of gold, people went crazy, and we got approached by a lot of investors, and it's like, don't leave any money on the table.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: And at the end of the day, for us, it's we we were building a product for like a very different reason and and to be part of like brushing your teeth, like part of your daily routine.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: So that's why we we we were thinking medium-long term the whole time, and really trying to give our our grain of sand um to fight to fight this this crazy time that we that we have lived.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, and I, you know, I love that you said that because you know it makes me think of, you know, in any medical profession, we are required to take an oath, you know, and that oath is for ethics, you know, for ethical reasons.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: And you know, and it's more about it's not about money, it's not about, you know, what can we get immediately?
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: And your brand is exactly echoing the morals and the ethics of uh these healthcare workers, such as us, you know, we it like and and that's beautiful, you know what I mean?
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: And that's that's something that that is of value and of of great importance to recognize because yeah, you know, you don't always need an incentive to do something that's good, you know, for long term.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: And there's like people that sell their values over money, and I think that's not who we are, and we may take longer to get where we want to be, but we will get there and with values and and authenticity.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: I absolutely really love that.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: And everyone listening, um, I hope that you have hand sanitizer with you at all times.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: But if you do not, you definitely I mean, Touchland is the way to go for that because I mean, you're seriously, like your your product is is wonderful.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: I love you know, I love the story.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: That's the main reason I have my podcast, right?
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: I I love hearing the amazing stories of the founders behind these brands.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: But I mean, you know, more importantly, you're doing something so wonderful for society, and it's you know, it's much more important than just oh, it's a brand or it's a you know, it's a business, yeah.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I want to actually ask you, Andrea, you know, um, what what are some of the things that, you know, like in I know with like hand care, it's like a whole different area of dermatology.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: So like when you were formulating and coming up with your concept, did you have to consult any dermatologists or anything?
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Or yeah, yes.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Everything that we do, we do patch testing, it's dermatologists tested.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Actually, our formula, we have a lot of people with sensitive skin that they say, I've never tried a hand sanitizer, that it's better for my skin.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Um, but because they they get irritated with some formulations, and ours, it's actually very, very good for sensitive skin.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Um, and yeah, we we make all of the badge testing to ensure our formulas are safe for all sorts of skin.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: And and what are some feedback that you've gotten from like uh you know frontline workers and stuff?
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: I'm sure they've reached out.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Well, uh, of course, like I think like as you were saying, like, for example, like medical and healthcare professionals, like people that have to use this on like a daily basis, like 30 times a day.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: You can imagine with product that is like dehydrating, they had to, most of the nurses that we talked to, they said, I have to carry on my left pocket my hand sanitizer, and on my right pocket, I have to have my hand cream.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Um, so I think like for us, it's really great to hear like finally, like healthcare professionals saying, I don't have to carry hand cream anymore.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Like this really feels good on my skin.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Other feedbacks that I love is when we have moms coming to us and saying, I had to chase my kids to sanitize their hands.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: And now they come to me begging me to spray their hands.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Um, so I think like this sort of feedback really is the best reward because it's really hard to build a product that people love.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: And we I always say, like, when we moved to the US in 2018 and we launched with a Kickstarter campaign that was fully funded, and we have been building this community that has pushed the brand where to where it is.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: It's the American dream.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: I always say that I would have never expected this reception and this love that it's a product that was built for people, and people have been the one that has been pushing the brand forward.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, people have spoken.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: That's beautiful.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: I really I love that, and that's such that's so important, I think, for brands, you know, having an organic growth and organic recognition, you know.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: So I I really congratulate you on that.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: It's very well deserved.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: And honestly, I would love to see touchland instead of PRL in all of the hospitals.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: I hope so too.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying that now because I I know those, you know, because we have those like uh dispensers by every patient room, and it's like, man, you know, your hands get so dried out.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: So I would love to see touchland, uh, you know, in the hospital.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: It would be really cool.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Um, we have uh our dispensers in a lot of businesses, like from like Equinox and Joe and the Juice and Sweet Green and Standard Cotels, like businesses that could have gone to any brand, and they they said it like we want to have a hand sanitizer that talks the same values that we have, and they opted into Tajlan and they give it to their guests and their staff and everything.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: So also the the commercial um experience for us with the dispenser has been incredible.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: And you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna ask this because I'm really, you know, I'm very new to the area of or this topic, and I'm wondering because I'm sure, you know, as a founder, you've you get a lot of questions about things like, you know, um, what do you call it, sustainability and all these like you know, buzzwords, right, in the industry.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Like um, how do you like how do you approach sustainability um from your project?
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: So, in regards to that, so our product lasts 10 times longer than a regular bottle of gel.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: So for every 10 bottles of gel, you only use one touchland.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Right now, we are not offering um refill refillable bottles because there's a risk of cross-contamination.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Whenever you refill hand subcontainers or hand sanitizer containers, there's a risk of cross-contamination.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: And we want to make sure that we we don't get into risk for this kind of issue, but we're working um to create like a refillable solution that solves the cross-contamination risk.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Um, and hopefully we can launch it into the market in 2022.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: Oh, I would love to see that.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, uh, you know, if there's anyone listening who's on the board for a hospital, please reach out to Andrea.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: I would love to see her products in in like big hot New York hospitals or just places that are so busy, you know.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, you know, I want to ask you a little bit more about the consumer side because you know, you mentioned that it's a very um, you know, people supported company, and I absolutely love that.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: Um, when did you start seeing a real spike in your um in the support that you were getting?
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: Was there like a moment that was like a turning point for the brand, or how did that work?
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: It's it's been uh I always say it's like a recipe, it's not one moment.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: I think like we don't have that aha moment where like everything went crazy.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Um, for us since we launched in the US, it has been a really great vital coefficient since we launched.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: Um, with Kickstarter campaign, we experienced a lot of support from like the social media community.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Um, we have never paid to play, we have never paid to have people promoting the product.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: It has been purely organic and it has gone very fast because at the end of the day we launched in December 2018, so it's not even been three years, but it has it has been like last year only we had 32 billionaire media impressions.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: Um, we've had tons of celebrities promoting organically the product because they truly like the the product and they are willing to pay for it.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: And I think that's that's how for a startup it makes everything easier because it's it's really hard to get visibility and awareness if you have to pay for it.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: And for us, it's been putting the product in the market and then the bus, the people, social media.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: We've been many times viral on TikTok with videos that hit four or five million views um that were like organic videos.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: So it's been it's been uh a responsible, sustainable growth for us.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: It's not been like one peak that really made the difference.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: It's been all over, like uh putting more product in the market and seeing the brand growing more.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, that that makes sense.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: I think if you're a truly a solid company and you have a good foundation, then yeah, you know, it's you're gonna see growth all the time, and you know, it's gonna be a long process.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: So that's uh you know, I I just had to ask because I was curious, but that's cool.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: It's a constant, it's a constant work.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Like I think like if you're waiting for like that short, shorter moment that it's gonna pop yourself.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: I'm concerned because like that goes up and goes down like like a rising star.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: We want to make sure that we can continue sustainably growing, and and we we have experienced that from the very beginning.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: I think like the love has continued to grow, the following has continued to grow, and and of course, like certain press hits have given us amazing um visibility, or when we go into television, good morning America today show.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Yes, like of course it it goes crazy, but I think it's been a very constant, a very constant growth.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Like it's been a lot of press hits, a lot of influencer support, a lot of um celebrity support and and all that.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: It's well, very well deserved.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's a beautiful, beautiful line, beautiful brand.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: I love what you're doing.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: I think this is truly, you know, amazing, brilliant work.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: So uh, you know, keep on and I wish you nothing but the best.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: I I hope everyone listening out there, I hope you have a bottle of touchland hand sanitizer in your pocket.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: If you have not, then yeah, I want you to go check out the brand and really, you know, just spend some time doing your homework because you know, hand sanitizer is more than just alcohol and some you know bacteriocytable stuff.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of you know work that goes behind it.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Our tagline actually is keys, wallet, phone touchland.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: It's like nowadays, hand sanitizer should be next to your keys, it should be an element that helps you go outside and have fun without concerns.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: And I we're very excited because we're gonna launch next week, um, in collaboration with Chivadam, which is one of the best perfume houses, a new collection.
