We'll learn some essential cooking verbs in Dutch. Luna: Perfect. I've been trying to follow a Dutch recipe, but I keep getting stuck on the verbs. Lucas: Well, let's fix that. First up: 'Ik kook.' That means 'I cook' or 'I am cooking.' Luna: Ik kook. Ik kook. Got it. Lucas: You say it like you mean it. Good. Now, put it in a sentence: 'Ik kook elke dag.' That means 'I cook every day.' Luna: Ik kook elke dag. I cook every day. Nice. Lucas: Next: 'Ik bak.' This means 'I bake.' It's for things like bread and cakes. Luna: Ik bak. I bake. So 'Ik bak een taart' would be 'I bake a cake'? Lucas: Exactly. Ik bak een taart. Perfect. Luna: Now I'm hungry. Let's keep going. Lucas: Here's another one: 'Ik snijd.' That's 'I cut' or 'I chop.' Luna: Ik snijd. Hmm, is that like slicing vegetables? Lucas: Yes, exactly. Ik snijd de groenten. I chop the vegetables. Luna: Ik snijd de groenten. I chop the vegetables. That's a useful one. Lucas: Absolutely. Now, after you chop, you often mix. So: 'Ik meng.' That means 'I mix.' Luna: Ik meng. I mix. Like mixing ingredients? Lucas: Right. Ik meng de ingrediënten. I mix the ingredients. Luna: Ik meng de ingrediënten. That's a mouthful but I'll try. Lucas: You did great. And finally, before you serve, you taste. 'Ik proef.' That's 'I taste.' Luna: Ik proef. I taste. Ik proef de soep. I taste the soup. Lucas: Perfect. You're a natural chef in Dutch now. Luna: Aww, thanks. This is fun. And you know what, I've been meaning to say something. Lucas: What's that? You say: 'Ik kook de soep. Ik snijd de groenten. Ik meng alles. Ik proef de soep. Heerlijk.' Luna: Ik kook de soep. Ik snijd de groenten. Ik meng alles. Ik proef de soep. Heerlijk. That's a whole story. Lucas: You did it. And notice how 'heerlijk' means 'delicious.' You might remember that from the restaurant episode. Luna: Yes, when we paid the bill. Het was heerlijk. Lucas: Exactly. So now you have all these cooking verbs to use at home. Luna: I'm going to practice by making a big batch of soup tonight. Lucas: And you can say every step in Dutch.
