- 0:07Speaker 1: Aos fans welcome in a special edition of Birdland Territory
- 0:11Speaker 1: Steve tim Brad and Chris Davis today as it's a
- 0:14Speaker 1: big week in Birdland this weekend. Chris, along with Storm
- 0:18Speaker 1: Davis and the late Scout Jim Russo, going to be
- 0:21Speaker 1: inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame. The big luncheon
- 0:25Speaker 1: will be Friday the oriel Advocates and the ceremony on
- 0:28Speaker 1: field ahead of the Orioles Phillies game Saturday night. Oriols
- 0:32Speaker 1: dot com they get tickets for either the luncheon or
- 0:35Speaker 1: the game or both, and we can't wait to see
- 0:38Speaker 1: our friend Chris Davis in town this weekend.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Chris, you know what.
- 0:43Speaker 3: A career you had in Birdland, man.
- 0:45Speaker 1: You were crush Davis for all those years, and the
- 0:48Speaker 1: oil fans couldn't wait to see it hit one out.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We know there were struggles at the end, went through
- 0:53Speaker 1: so much ups and downs. You know when you think
- 0:56Speaker 1: about this on or now and being back this weekend,
- 0:59Speaker 1: what thoughts come to mind a little bit of relief.
- 1:03Speaker 2: To be honest with you, I was super excited when
- 1:06Speaker 2: when Bill called me, I was actually on the on
- 1:09Speaker 2: the field on a softball field, watching or coaching my
- 1:12Speaker 2: my two youngest, and we all know Bill Stetka is
- 1:16Speaker 2: the Oils alumni guy, but we know him as the
- 1:19Speaker 2: kind of the Hall of Fame guy too. So when
- 1:21Speaker 2: he called me, I was like, is it my turn?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Is it Buck? Who's it gonna be? So, man, I
- 1:28Speaker 2: was super excited. You know, obviously there were struggles at
- 1:31Speaker 2: the end, but when I really think back to the
- 1:33Speaker 2: first you know, five or six years there, and the
- 1:35Speaker 2: group of guys that we had, and just I think
- 1:38Speaker 2: I said it to Oda yesterday, being a part of
- 1:41Speaker 2: such a storied franchise and being able to bring winning
- 1:43Speaker 2: baseball back to that franchise meant a great deal. And
- 1:47Speaker 2: to do it with with good dudes, with good human beings. Man,
- 1:50Speaker 2: it just it meant a lot to me.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Yeah, Chris, Man, I think back to, you know, coming
- 1:55Speaker 4: over to Baltimore. I don't think I ever even told
- 1:58Speaker 4: you this, but you were the one that helped really
- 2:00Speaker 4: made me feel comfortable, just you know, spending times in
- 2:03Speaker 4: the hot tubs and the cole tubs and stuff like that.
- 2:05Speaker 4: When when you came over to Baltimore, was there anybody
- 2:08Speaker 4: that kind of stood out to you that kind of
- 2:09Speaker 4: helped you feel comfortable coming to a new organization.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I knew Wheedy. I played with Weeders in high
- 2:17Speaker 2: school all American games, so like we we kind of
- 2:19Speaker 2: knew each other. And by that time, I mean, I
- 2:21Speaker 2: had spent parts of three years in the Big League,
- 2:24Speaker 2: so I knew I knew of Mark Akus. We all
- 2:28Speaker 2: know Nikki. He doesn't talk a ton and he definitely
- 2:30Speaker 2: doesn't talk between the lines. But I was familiar with
- 2:34Speaker 2: some of the guys. I knew JJ a little bit.
- 2:36Speaker 2: But but one of the things I think that helped
- 2:39Speaker 2: me so much, Brad was having so many guys from
- 2:42Speaker 2: the Rangers organization the next year. So, I mean, getting
- 2:45Speaker 2: traded in the middle of the season's kind of it's
- 2:47Speaker 2: kind of a weird deal because you get thrown right
- 2:49Speaker 2: into the middle of the mix and uh, and you
- 2:51Speaker 2: kind of have to find your way. And for me,
- 2:53Speaker 2: I was trying to, you know, establish myself as an
- 2:56Speaker 2: everyday player, so that was kind of at the forefront
- 2:58Speaker 2: of my mind. But I I think really the biggest
- 3:00Speaker 2: thing that helped me was having Ode Tommy and I
- 3:03Speaker 2: got traded with tom too, so we kind of both
- 3:06Speaker 2: went through that journey together. But it was just such
- 3:09Speaker 2: a good group of guys. You know, this Brad like
- 3:11Speaker 2: it was. It was a lot of There were a
- 3:13Speaker 2: lot of guys on that team that had been kind
- 3:15Speaker 2: of cast excuse me, cast off. They had been released
- 3:19Speaker 2: or signed, claimed off waivers, or traded, and I think
- 3:23Speaker 2: that really helped us kind of form an identity as
- 3:26Speaker 2: a team and helped us win. To be honest with.
- 3:28Speaker 5: You, Chris, you mentioned how special it was to bring
- 3:32Speaker 5: winning back to Baltimore. You got traded in twenty eleven
- 3:36Speaker 5: and twenty twelve, the team just had fourteen consecutive losing
- 3:40Speaker 5: seasons to get back to the playoffs and win that
- 3:43Speaker 5: first ever wildcard game against the Rangers the Alds. It
- 3:47Speaker 5: was a madhouse against the Yankees. Just how special of
- 3:50Speaker 5: a season was twenty twelve for you and the organization?
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it was huge. It was huge for me personally
- 3:57Speaker 2: because it was the first time that I had really
- 3:59Speaker 2: kind of come into my own. I think I led
- 4:01Speaker 2: the team at home runs that year. I hit thirty
- 4:03Speaker 2: home runs in the big leagues for the first time,
- 4:04Speaker 2: which was a big deal to me. But I think
- 4:07Speaker 2: the coolest thing to your point about the all the
- 4:10Speaker 2: play in game or whatever, they call it the wild
- 4:12Speaker 2: Card Game. We had like seven or eight dudes from
- 4:15Speaker 2: that Rangers team that went to the World Series the
- 4:17Speaker 2: year before, or that was in that organization, and we
- 4:20Speaker 2: beat them on their own field, and I thought that
- 4:22Speaker 2: was so cool. I played bright field because Nikki got
- 4:25Speaker 2: hit by CC and and messas Rissa. But I remember
- 4:29Speaker 2: standing in the in the stadium in the ballpark in Arlington,
- 4:32Speaker 2: which is where you know, I grew up watching Rangers games,
- 4:35Speaker 2: and and just be feeling so proud to be a
- 4:37Speaker 2: part of of such a like a story and a
- 4:42Speaker 2: franchise that had such a rich history, that has so
- 4:44Speaker 2: many Hall of famers, that had so many icons in
- 4:47Speaker 2: the game of baseball. I remember standing in right field
- 4:50Speaker 2: and being like, yes, like this is awesome, and it
- 4:53Speaker 2: was just a good group of dudes. Man. I can't,
- 4:55Speaker 2: I can't, you know, overemphasize that like, I can't. I
- 4:58Speaker 2: can't emphasize that enough. There. Those guys were just like
- 5:01Speaker 2: we were brothers, Brad, You're part of it, man. Like
- 5:03Speaker 2: we did stupid stuff like crab races for fantasy football
- 5:06Speaker 2: picks and team dinners, and I mean we all had
- 5:09Speaker 2: kids together and our wives were all closed it was
- 5:12Speaker 2: a It was just such a special group man.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Chris Davis coming back to Baltimore this weekend for the
- 5:18Speaker 1: Oriol Hall of Fame, the Oriol Advocates lunch and Friday
- 5:21Speaker 1: on Field Ceremony Saturday Storm Davis no relation coming back
- 5:25Speaker 1: part of the nineteen eighty three World Series champs. He
- 5:28Speaker 1: had a big role when the Oriols last wanted. And
- 5:30Speaker 1: Jim Russo, the late scout and executive for the Oriols,
- 5:34Speaker 1: came from Saint Louis when the team came in fifty four,
- 5:37Speaker 1: stayed for over thirty years. This guy signed Jim Palmer,
- 5:41Speaker 1: Dave Johnson, the second Basement boot Pal and many others
- 5:45Speaker 1: and was part of scouting the Dodgers for the sweep
- 5:48Speaker 1: in sixty six. A lot of people credit Jim Russo
- 5:51Speaker 1: for the advanced reports that helped the Orioles sweep the Dodgers. So, Chris,
- 5:56Speaker 1: you mentioned that twenty twelve season twenty thirteen is a
- 6:00Speaker 1: I think maybe when Crush Davis was really born set
- 6:03Speaker 1: single season records for the Orioles to this day that
- 6:06Speaker 1: stand up. Fifty three homers, one hundred and thirty eight rebies,
- 6:10Speaker 1: ninety six extra base hits. I remember the start of
- 6:13Speaker 1: the year. I've never seen a player of sixteen RBIs
- 6:16Speaker 1: in four games to start the year as you did.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Can you remember did it seemed like a beach ball
- 6:23Speaker 1: the base at that time?
- 6:25Speaker 2: Yeah? It did, And I remember getting seeing The game
- 6:29Speaker 2: that I remember the most is the opening day game
- 6:33Speaker 2: in Baltimore. And opening days always special. The stadium's always packed,
- 6:39Speaker 2: and I mean, obviously I have a soft spot for
- 6:41Speaker 2: Camoy Yards and the fan base, but I remember seeing
- 6:45Speaker 2: a stat I was sitting in the clubhouse before the
- 6:47Speaker 2: game started that day and I had more RBIs than
- 6:50Speaker 2: like a couple of teams combined, and I'm like, this
- 6:54Speaker 2: is a good start to the season. And I think
- 6:59Speaker 2: probably the thing that I remember the most, and I
- 7:01Speaker 2: still get chills when I think about it, is hitting
- 7:04Speaker 2: the Grand Slam to put us ahead off of Tyler Robertson.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And the reason why I remember it the most is
- 7:10Speaker 2: I remember going around the bases and just hearing the
- 7:13Speaker 2: crowd cheer and like really feeling the energy of the
- 7:15Speaker 2: stadium for the first time. I got a little taste
- 7:18Speaker 2: of that the year before in the playoffs when we
- 7:20Speaker 2: played the Yankees, Tim and so I knew what it
- 7:24Speaker 2: could be. But I remember going back at looking at
- 7:27Speaker 2: the video and Nate Mcloth standing on third base going
- 7:31Speaker 2: back to the bag and had his hands on his
- 7:32Speaker 2: head and he was saying, oh my god. I thought
- 7:37Speaker 2: it was hilarious. But we had a conversation after the game.
- 7:40Speaker 2: He was like, do you realize how ridiculous this start is?
- 7:44Speaker 2: And I was like, yeah, I'm really trying not to
- 7:45Speaker 2: think about it. I'm really trying not to talk about it.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I'm just trying to keep going. So it was definitely
- 7:51Speaker 2: the hottest I've ever been to start a season, and
- 7:54Speaker 2: I'm just glad that I had guys shared with Manny
- 7:58Speaker 2: hit like ninety six or ninety eight doubles that year,
- 8:01Speaker 2: fifty something, I don't remember. He had an insane amount
- 8:03Speaker 2: of doubles. So he was always on base Jones and
- 8:06Speaker 2: I used to joke like, man, he would get on
- 8:08Speaker 2: second and Jones he would roll over and get him
- 8:11Speaker 2: over and I just drive him in. So it wasn't
- 8:15Speaker 2: just me. I mean, obviously was extremely hot, but man,
- 8:18Speaker 2: I had a lot of guys. There was a lot
- 8:19Speaker 2: of traffic on bases and on the bases, and it
- 8:21Speaker 2: was it was just really cool to be a part
- 8:23Speaker 2: of that.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Yeah, obviously, I mean on the on field stuff speaks
- 8:29Speaker 4: for itself, unbelievable seasons, but I didn't I want to
- 8:32Speaker 4: give you a chance to kind of talk about the
- 8:34Speaker 4: extremely generous gift you and Jill gave to the hospital there,
- 8:37Speaker 4: and is there a backstory to it, and like your
- 8:40Speaker 4: relationship with the hospitals and everything. I just want to
- 8:42Speaker 4: give you a chance to kind of to talk about
- 8:44Speaker 4: that a little bit.
- 8:45Speaker 2: No, I appreciate that. Sorry, I appreciate that. There is
- 8:49Speaker 2: so b rob Brian Roberts took me to the children's
- 8:53Speaker 2: hospital for the first time. I can't even remember what
- 8:55Speaker 2: year it was, maybe twenty twelve, but I just remember
- 8:59Speaker 2: him asking, you want to go to the children's Children's Hospital.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It's kind of something that you know, is means a
- 9:05Speaker 2: lot to me and Diana and I think it'd be
- 9:06Speaker 2: cool for you to experience. And so I said, yeah,
- 9:08Speaker 2: for sure, and uh, and so I went to the hospital.
- 9:11Speaker 2: And I mean, if if you've ever been in a
- 9:14Speaker 2: in a an environment where kids are going through the
- 9:17Speaker 2: things that they're going through and you get to be
- 9:19Speaker 2: around them, it's it's hard not to be impacted by that.
- 9:24Speaker 2: And it's it's really hard not to want to get
- 9:26Speaker 2: involved in to try to help those people, especially when
- 9:29Speaker 2: you start to talk to some of the parents and
- 9:30Speaker 2: you start to understand understand some of the struggles that
- 9:33Speaker 2: they're going through and just the time commitment that it
- 9:35Speaker 2: takes for them to be there. So with Jill having
- 9:38Speaker 2: a nursing background, it was an easy guess for us,
- 9:42Speaker 2: and I think really the more we more time we
- 9:45Speaker 2: spent there, the more we really wanted to get involved.
- 9:48Speaker 2: We just didn't know what that looked like. And so
- 9:50Speaker 2: I basically asked Steven Zen, Who's who's one of the
- 9:53Speaker 2: doctors that will actually see this week when we go
- 9:55Speaker 2: up there. I just asked him. I was like, what,
- 9:57Speaker 2: y'all's the biggest need here? And he talked about the
- 10:00Speaker 2: cath lab and how much he needed. That's kind of
- 10:03Speaker 2: where it went, you know, and I didn't I didn't
- 10:07Speaker 2: know at the time that it was going to be
- 10:09Speaker 2: as big of a deal as it was because it
- 10:11Speaker 2: wasn't about that. But it's something that still means a
- 10:15Speaker 2: lot to us. I mean, we still talk to him
- 10:17Speaker 2: on a pretty regular basis and are still going to
- 10:21Speaker 2: be involved, you know, for the rest of our lives.
- 10:23Speaker 2: I'd love to see one of the other guys on
- 10:25Speaker 2: the team now start to get involved because it is
- 10:28Speaker 2: such a unique relationship. And so maybe that's a conversation
- 10:31Speaker 2: I'll have with somebody when I go up there. It's awesome.
- 10:34Speaker 5: That's awesome stuff, Chris, And you know, a lot of
- 10:37Speaker 5: the guys, especially of that era, really gave back to
- 10:40Speaker 5: the city. And Chris, you've mentioned multiple times now just
- 10:45Speaker 5: how good of a group of guys it was. And
- 10:48Speaker 5: you think of twenty twelve through sixteen, especially winning the
- 10:51Speaker 5: most games in the American League, but it just seemed
- 10:54Speaker 5: like you guys were having so much fun, right like
- 10:56Speaker 5: with all the postgame pies and just all the shenanigans
- 10:59Speaker 5: going on, Like it just seemed like such a special
- 11:03Speaker 5: blend of extremely talented players but also just really good
- 11:08Speaker 5: dudes that I think this city really embraced because of that.
- 11:11Speaker 2: No doubt, no doubt. That's probably one of the things
- 11:13Speaker 2: that I hear the most about that group of guys
- 11:16Speaker 2: from fans is that they we we were relatable, They
- 11:20Speaker 2: enjoyed coming to the field because we really they seem
- 11:24Speaker 2: they seem we really seemed like we cared about each other.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Because we did. I remember the pie celebration was awesome
- 11:30Speaker 2: to me. Steve Pierce run that, by the way, I
- 11:33Speaker 2: just want to I'm gonna I'm gonna throw him under
- 11:35Speaker 2: the now Jonesy busted his lip and then they were like,
- 11:39Speaker 2: you can't have pies anymore because we're like, he's a
- 11:41Speaker 2: grown man. It's just a bust let us have. But
- 11:45Speaker 2: but it was just a good group of guys, Like
- 11:47Speaker 2: I mean, seriously, we we hung out together off the field.
- 11:51Speaker 2: After I pitched in Boston, I always wanted to go
- 11:53Speaker 2: to a bullpen dinner and Brocky you know bullpen dinners
- 11:56Speaker 2: about but I was never body because I wasn't a
- 11:59Speaker 2: part of the bullpen. And I remember after I pitched
- 12:01Speaker 2: in Boston, I told Jim Johnson on the flat back home,
- 12:04Speaker 2: I said, Hey, I'm going to bullpen dinner now, dude.
- 12:06Speaker 2: And so I went to the He's like, you're good,
- 12:08Speaker 2: You're good, you go to bull So we went out
- 12:09Speaker 2: to we went. I went out to a bullpen dinner
- 12:12Speaker 2: uh in Anaheim, and we had a great time. And
- 12:14Speaker 2: I'm like, we should always do we should do this,
- 12:16Speaker 2: Like it's funny because position players don't hang out as
- 12:19Speaker 2: much as pitchers do. And so for a while, O Day,
- 12:23Speaker 2: O Day and I were obviously really close. We I
- 12:26Speaker 2: was like the only position player that would hang out
- 12:28Speaker 2: with the pitchers. But we just had a good group
- 12:32Speaker 2: of guys that enjoyed being around each other. We wore
- 12:34Speaker 2: each other out, we gave each other a hard time,
- 12:35Speaker 2: but we really cared about each other, and I think
- 12:38Speaker 2: that really gives you a good on field product because
- 12:41Speaker 2: you have that chemistry when when things get tough. Man,
- 12:44Speaker 2: we had some rough stretches, but I think knowing that
- 12:46Speaker 2: we had each other's back and knowing that we cared
- 12:48Speaker 2: about each other helped us to get out of those
- 12:49Speaker 2: rough stretches.
- 12:50Speaker 5: Well, Chris, you bring up the relief appearance that you
- 12:55Speaker 5: had in Boston, which is insane two innings Like now
- 12:59Speaker 5: that's out the window with this new extra innings for
- 13:02Speaker 5: Man and the only time you see position players it's
- 13:04Speaker 5: the team's getting killed one way or another. Just what
- 13:07Speaker 5: was it like getting that, you know, Buck coming up
- 13:10Speaker 5: to you just experience like did you go in with
- 13:12Speaker 5: a lot of confidence that you could you know, come
- 13:15Speaker 5: through there like absolutely not.
- 13:17Speaker 2: I'm pitched in six years and I wasn't that good.
- 13:19Speaker 2: When I pitched in college man, so I always said,
- 13:23Speaker 2: you know, coming up for some teams that looked at me,
- 13:25Speaker 2: I think out of high school and out of college
- 13:27Speaker 2: as a picture. But I was a thrower. But I'm
- 13:30Speaker 2: thankful that I had Skip Johnson as a college coach
- 13:34Speaker 2: because he's one of the best pitching coaches in the country.
- 13:37Speaker 2: And I was literally like, okay, keep your front side closed,
- 13:40Speaker 2: like don't fly, like didn't try, and I'm doing it.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I think the fact that I'm so naive at times
- 13:46Speaker 2: really played into my favor because I was I remember
- 13:49Speaker 2: woman up in the bullpen and Bill Castro was our
- 13:51Speaker 2: bullpen coach, and he's like, all right, what do you got?
- 13:54Speaker 2: And my ball, naturally, I think just for my arm
- 13:56Speaker 2: slot has a has a little sink. That's probably why
- 13:58Speaker 2: I didn't stay at third base very long. And Bill
- 14:02Speaker 2: Castro was like okay, and then I threw a slider
- 14:04Speaker 2: and he's like, no, that's not gonna work. What else
- 14:07Speaker 2: you got? And I was like, I threw a split
- 14:09Speaker 2: because I can't throw a change up and he's like,
- 14:11Speaker 2: and I threw it. He's like, okay, go get a kid,
- 14:13Speaker 2: and I'm like that's it, Like.
- 14:18Speaker 4: It was.
- 14:18Speaker 2: It was fun. Looking back on it, I realized how
- 14:22Speaker 2: crazy it was. I don't think I think having such
- 14:26Speaker 2: a bad day at the plate. I was just kind
- 14:28Speaker 2: of pissed off, you know, And I'm like, well, if
- 14:31Speaker 2: you know, if it's I'm either going to be the
- 14:33Speaker 2: complete goat or I'm something great is gonna happen. And
- 14:36Speaker 2: thankfully Jonesy cut that ball off in the outfield and
- 14:40Speaker 2: made an unbelievable play to throw it to JJ, and
- 14:43Speaker 2: JJ threw through tweed and that we got Marlon Bird
- 14:45Speaker 2: out at home or else. I'm like, we would have
- 14:47Speaker 2: never had the designated It's crazy, man. I will say this,
- 14:52Speaker 2: It gave me a greater appreciation for being in the
- 14:54Speaker 2: center of the diamond with nobody else around you. I'm like,
- 14:57Speaker 2: this is a very very lonely play. At least when
- 15:01Speaker 2: you're in the batter's box you got a couple of
- 15:03Speaker 2: people there, but man, you are in the center of
- 15:05Speaker 2: the diamond and you're holding ball, so it's like everybody's
- 15:08Speaker 2: watching you. But it was fun. Man. I give Buck
- 15:11Speaker 2: a lot of credit for making that call because that
- 15:15Speaker 2: really changed our season. I mean, we had we won
- 15:18Speaker 2: that series, we won the next series, and we kind
- 15:20Speaker 2: of started rolling, and so that was a that was
- 15:23Speaker 2: a big game for us to win, but man, it
- 15:25Speaker 2: was crazy.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Spent some more time with Chris Davis, who's headed to
- 15:28Speaker 1: the oriol Hall of Fame this weekend along with Storm
- 15:31Speaker 1: Davis and Jim Russo.
- 15:33Speaker 3: And you can get.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Tickets for Fridays luncheon or Saturday's game in ceremony go
- 15:38Speaker 1: to Oriols dot com. The oil Advocates put on a
- 15:41Speaker 1: great luncheon every year for the Hall of Famers, and
- 15:43Speaker 1: the ceremony will be special Saturday. A lot of your
- 15:46Speaker 1: teammates are coming back, Chris, you noted a few. I
- 15:49Speaker 1: think Brad's going to be in town and some of
- 15:52Speaker 1: those guys.
- 15:53Speaker 2: And so let's go.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Back to when you are traded to the Orioles from
- 15:56Speaker 1: the Rangers in Trade Deadline twenty eleven. You and Tommy Hunter,
- 16:01Speaker 1: your good buddy for Koji Yuohara. Some people remember that
- 16:04Speaker 1: trade worked out very well for in Birdland. You've told
- 16:07Speaker 1: the story before that the two of you had different
- 16:11Speaker 1: reactions to that trade.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Is that correct?
- 16:13Speaker 2: That is we were in two different places, and Tommy
- 16:17Speaker 2: had started the World Series game the year before, and
- 16:21Speaker 2: I thought was very much in the mix for the Rangers,
- 16:23Speaker 2: who ended up going back to the World Series again.
- 16:29Speaker 2: We're in twenty ten. I was on the taxi squad,
- 16:31Speaker 2: which basically means I was suiting up to sit there
- 16:33Speaker 2: and watch the game, but I wasn't available unless somebody
- 16:36Speaker 2: got hurt or something like that happened. So I was
- 16:40Speaker 2: grateful to be there and to get to experience that environment,
- 16:43Speaker 2: but it was really hard to sit there and watch
- 16:45Speaker 2: the team that you had been with for the last
- 16:46Speaker 2: couple of years that you had had some success with
- 16:50Speaker 2: go out and compete in the World Series and not
- 16:52Speaker 2: get a chance to be a part of that. So
- 16:54Speaker 2: I was ready to get out of there. I think
- 16:57Speaker 2: just being a part of that organization, and I'm extremely
- 16:59Speaker 2: grateful to the Texas Rangers for drafting me and giving
- 17:01Speaker 2: me the opportunity to play in the big leagues. But
- 17:04Speaker 2: I think the fact that the farm system was so
- 17:07Speaker 2: loaded and that there were so many guys there was
- 17:08Speaker 2: kind of a log jam at first base, and so
- 17:12Speaker 2: I was ready to get out of there. I was
- 17:14Speaker 2: willing to do anything, play the outfield, play third base.
- 17:19Speaker 2: They signed Beltrade the off season of twenty ten, Going
- 17:24Speaker 2: into twenty eleven, season, so there wasn't really a place
- 17:27Speaker 2: for me. So I was fired up when I got traded.
- 17:29Speaker 2: We were in Toronto. I'll never forget. I was sitting
- 17:31Speaker 2: in my hotel room and Scott Boris called me and
- 17:34Speaker 2: was like, you got traded, and I was like, where
- 17:36Speaker 2: am I going? And before we knew it was BALTI
- 17:39Speaker 2: before I knew it was Baltimore, it was either San
- 17:41Speaker 2: Diego or Baltimore. And San Diego had shown interest in
- 17:44Speaker 2: spring training for potentially I think it was Heath Bell
- 17:48Speaker 2: was their closer. The Rangers were trying to get a
- 17:50Speaker 2: vacuum bul piece, and so I really thought it was
- 17:53Speaker 2: going to be San Diego. And he said You're going
- 17:56Speaker 2: to Baltimore and I was like Baltimore. And he's like, yeah,
- 17:58Speaker 2: they traded you. They traded for you and Tommy for
- 18:01Speaker 2: Coach u Are And I was like, man, Coachy is
- 18:03Speaker 2: an all star, Like he's there, and I'm like, okay,
- 18:05Speaker 2: who's in Baltimore? Buck Kirby, I'm like, okay, I know
- 18:09Speaker 2: Weedy And I'm like, sweet, I'm gonna get a chance
- 18:11Speaker 2: to play, Like I'm gonna get a chance to play
- 18:13Speaker 2: every day. And so I was super fired up. I
- 18:15Speaker 2: think Tommy was was discouraged because I think he was
- 18:19Speaker 2: kind of blindsided by it. But but yeah, I mean
- 18:23Speaker 2: it worked out really well for both of us because
- 18:25Speaker 2: Tommy was coming. God, I think he had gotten injured
- 18:29Speaker 2: and they had put him in the bullpen, but he
- 18:32Speaker 2: didn't really have a specific role, and he was huge
- 18:36Speaker 2: for us out of the bullpen in Baltimore, as you
- 18:38Speaker 2: guys know. But yeah, I was fired up. Man. I
- 18:41Speaker 2: just wanted to play baseball and and I didn't know
- 18:43Speaker 2: a ton about the Oils organization other than Cal and
- 18:47Speaker 2: Brady and you know, the nostalgia of Candy Yards. But
- 18:51Speaker 2: but I was. I was just so fired up when
- 18:54Speaker 2: I got up there, and I'm thankful that we won.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Uh if y'all remember to kind of close out the
- 19:00Speaker 2: twenty eleven season and then and then start up to
- 19:02Speaker 2: continue to win for the next few years. So I
- 19:05Speaker 2: was just I was just super excited.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Yeah, Chris, was there anything like when you came over
- 19:10Speaker 4: to Baltimore? Was it just was it just the fact
- 19:12Speaker 4: of getting a shot to play every day, or was
- 19:14Speaker 4: it a certain coach or was it just like what
- 19:17Speaker 4: was the what helped you become the player you you
- 19:20Speaker 4: obviously were in Texas.
- 19:22Speaker 2: It just didn't happen there.
- 19:23Speaker 4: But like, what caused that to kind of just kind of,
- 19:25Speaker 4: you know, happened when you got to Baltimore.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it was a number of things. I
- 19:30Speaker 2: think getting away from home, Like I grew up in
- 19:32Speaker 2: East Texas, I grew up a Rangers fan. There, there
- 19:35Speaker 2: was a lot of pressure that I put on myself.
- 19:38Speaker 2: But I also had a ton of family and friends
- 19:39Speaker 2: that were always there and I'm thankful for them. But
- 19:42Speaker 2: it just, as you know, it adds another dynamic, and
- 19:46Speaker 2: it adds another element to kind of an already stressful situation.
- 19:49Speaker 2: And you you just you have to get baseball your
- 19:51Speaker 2: your whole life when you're in it to be able
- 19:53Speaker 2: to compete at that level. So I think really getting
- 19:57Speaker 2: out of a place where everybody knew me as a
- 20:01Speaker 2: certain player and getting a chance to restart with a
- 20:03Speaker 2: new fan base and a new new team was just
- 20:08Speaker 2: refreshing for me. The other thing was Buck showaltern Buckets
- 20:12Speaker 2: is gonna I'm gonna give Buck a lot of credit.
- 20:14Speaker 2: I sat down with Buck and was very honest and
- 20:17Speaker 2: I said, look, this is where I'm at. I'm out
- 20:20Speaker 2: of options. So you can't send me down, you know,
- 20:23Speaker 2: but I want the chance to play every day. And
- 20:25Speaker 2: he told me, and he straight up said, you're going
- 20:27Speaker 2: to get the chance, but it's not an open ended ticket.
- 20:29Speaker 2: He's like, you're going to have to prove that you
- 20:30Speaker 2: can play here and he goes, and I think you can.
- 20:33Speaker 2: And having Kirby there too was big deal because Kirby
- 20:35Speaker 2: knew me. We had history. He was the field coordinator,
- 20:38Speaker 2: the Rogan field coordinator for the Rangers when I was there,
- 20:41Speaker 2: So having some familiar faces and knowing that I was
- 20:45Speaker 2: going to give an opportunity to play was really big.
- 20:48Speaker 2: And thankfully I was able to capitalize on the opportunity.
- 20:52Speaker 2: And I think also being able to play different positions
- 20:56Speaker 2: and being willing to do that helped me out a
- 20:58Speaker 2: bunch because I kind of moved around a lot in
- 21:02Speaker 2: twenty twelve. But it was, yeah, I mean, just to
- 21:05Speaker 2: change the scenery. Man, it's huge, It really is.
- 21:08Speaker 5: Chris, What was it like just being a part of
- 21:11Speaker 5: lineups that just absolutely mashed? I mean, you guys led
- 21:15Speaker 5: the majors and home runs for multiple years. It was
- 21:17Speaker 5: what Nelson, you Trumbo leading the majors and home runs?
- 21:21Speaker 5: Like there really were was no soft spot in that lineup.
- 21:26Speaker 2: No, there wasn't. It was awesome. I've got a good
- 21:28Speaker 2: buddy who pitched for the Indians for a long time,
- 21:30Speaker 2: Cody Allen, and he made his debut against us in
- 21:33Speaker 2: Cleveland and he was like, dude, it's like y'all were
- 21:36Speaker 2: rolling out guys that were six three six five six six.
- 21:40Speaker 2: He was like, your second basement was six y four
- 21:42Speaker 2: and I'm like talking about scope and I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:45Speaker 2: We had some big bodies and he's like, y'all looked
- 21:47Speaker 2: like a bunch of professional wrestlers. Yeah, we did. It
- 21:53Speaker 2: was fun, man like. We we had such a unique
- 21:56Speaker 2: lineup because we had guys like Jones who could steal
- 22:00Speaker 2: the base, Nate who could steal a base. Nick he
- 22:04Speaker 2: could run every now and then if you wanted to.
- 22:06Speaker 2: We had guys that would get on base. Nick was
- 22:08Speaker 2: so big for our lineup at the top of the lineup,
- 22:11Speaker 2: and he was big for me because he was another
- 22:12Speaker 2: left handed bat. So I would kind of that's kind
- 22:14Speaker 2: of how I I gauged, you know, how I was
- 22:18Speaker 2: going to attack a picture based off of how they
- 22:20Speaker 2: would attack Nick, And so it was huge for me
- 22:22Speaker 2: to have a left hand or at the top of
- 22:23Speaker 2: the lineup, but then you had guys like Manny Jonesy,
- 22:25Speaker 2: Weedy hit behind me. Like there was protection all throughout
- 22:29Speaker 2: the lineup. And to your point, there were no breaks.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Anybody in that lineup at any time could take you deep.
- 22:34Speaker 2: And so I think it put a lot of pressure
- 22:36Speaker 2: on opposing pitching staffs because there was there was no
- 22:40Speaker 2: you didn't get a batter off. And so it was funny.
- 22:43Speaker 2: We we always joked. Buck would always say, you know,
- 22:46Speaker 2: we don't have to live and die by the three
- 22:48Speaker 2: run home run, and I'm like, it kind of works
- 22:50Speaker 2: for us, So I'm not gonna I'm not gonna stop.
- 22:53Speaker 2: But it was just such a good team and and
- 22:57Speaker 2: defensively we were really good. I still have up here
- 23:01Speaker 2: behind me the we hold the single season fillty percentage
- 23:04Speaker 2: record for a team. But it was just I mean,
- 23:08Speaker 2: you guys, Many's still doing it JJ. There were go
- 23:11Speaker 2: blots all over the field. It was just a unique
- 23:14Speaker 2: group of guys, man, And I think one of the
- 23:17Speaker 2: things that really made it special is there were no superstars.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Like you could argue that Jonesy was a superstar because
- 23:23Speaker 2: he was under contract and he was, you know, the
- 23:24Speaker 2: perennial All Star, but he didn't act like a superstar
- 23:28Speaker 2: like we were just we were baseball players. And I
- 23:30Speaker 2: think that that made it a lot easier for everybody
- 23:33Speaker 2: to go out and do their job because nobody cared
- 23:35Speaker 2: who got the credit as long as we won baseball games.
- 23:39Speaker 3: It was a special time in Birdland.
- 23:41Speaker 1: And your guys group, Brad and Chris and the guys
- 23:44Speaker 1: you've sut you noted today will never be forgotten in
- 23:48Speaker 1: this town because you took them from losers to winners
- 23:51Speaker 1: to October baseball.
- 23:53Speaker 3: You guys, drinks are on us for the.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Rest of years.
- 23:59Speaker 3: For what for what you guys did now.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Chris, you noted in twenty three when you came back
- 24:04Speaker 1: for Adam jones Jersey retirement, you aren't sure how the
- 24:07Speaker 1: reception was gonna go, and it went great because the
- 24:11Speaker 1: fans more remembered the good times than the ending. How
- 24:14Speaker 1: do you sort all that out now when your mind
- 24:17Speaker 1: what happened at the end, and is it just an
- 24:19Speaker 1: anecdote you just flush it away or is it part
- 24:23Speaker 1: of a bigger resume.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely. I definitely don't flush it away because
- 24:29Speaker 2: it really helps me appreciate the earlier years, and I
- 24:32Speaker 2: think it also kind of helps me stay grounded because
- 24:37Speaker 2: the struggle was it was so prolonged, and I think
- 24:42Speaker 2: people ask me all the time what happened. I continue
- 24:46Speaker 2: to try to play when I shouldn't have, And I
- 24:48Speaker 2: always thought, you know, your best tool is availability, and
- 24:51Speaker 2: so there were I was in a lot of pain.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Certain things had kind of started popping up, and I'm like, man,
- 24:56Speaker 2: I can't do that like I used to, and I
- 24:58Speaker 2: didn't know why, and brock, you know this, Like I
- 25:01Speaker 2: was always a worker, like I always thought, I'll just
- 25:04Speaker 2: work my way out of it. I'll just work out harder,
- 25:06Speaker 2: I'll just hit more, I'll just I'll just keep going.
- 25:10Speaker 2: And that's not a good, good recipe for success for anybody.
- 25:15Speaker 2: There are times when you need to take a break
- 25:16Speaker 2: and you need to address certain things, especially if physically
- 25:20Speaker 2: your body's breaking down. And there's no shame in that,
- 25:22Speaker 2: but for me, it was really hard. I felt like
- 25:24Speaker 2: I owed it to the fans to at least be
- 25:26Speaker 2: out there, even though I wasn't capable of doing what
- 25:29Speaker 2: I really wanted to and I wasn't sure why. But
- 25:33Speaker 2: for me like that, that makes the journey that much
- 25:38Speaker 2: sweeter because it really helps me appreciate those years that
- 25:41Speaker 2: we were winning. It was tough to go in there
- 25:43Speaker 2: every day when we were losing and we weren't trying
- 25:45Speaker 2: to win, you know, I think it was I didn't
- 25:49Speaker 2: know really how to go about it. A lot of
- 25:51Speaker 2: times I really leaned into my roles as kind of
- 25:53Speaker 2: the veteran guy in the clubhouse and tried to teach
- 25:56Speaker 2: the guys, the younger guys, this is the way that
- 25:58Speaker 2: we do things, this is why we do things this.
- 26:01Speaker 2: But it was hard to go from from such a
- 26:04Speaker 2: you know, several years of success, so much success, to
- 26:09Speaker 2: to just failure day in and day out, and and
- 26:12Speaker 2: for me to experience that and kind of go through
- 26:15Speaker 2: that with the fans. The fans made a huge deal
- 26:17Speaker 2: to me. And I know every player feels, you know,
- 26:21Speaker 2: a certain way about fan bases, but but I mean,
- 26:24Speaker 2: I was in Multimore for a decade, so I know
- 26:26Speaker 2: a lot of fans. I know a lot of fans personally,
- 26:28Speaker 2: Like I've got a couple of them that that texts
- 26:29Speaker 2: me that I'm that I'm you know, friends with. So
- 26:32Speaker 2: it was hard for me to go through that because
- 26:34Speaker 2: I felt like I was really letting everybody down. But
- 26:37Speaker 2: when I came back for Jonesy's thing, I didn't I
- 26:41Speaker 2: didn't know what to expect. So I mean they didn't.
- 26:45Speaker 2: They did what Berdland does. Man. They stood up for
- 26:47Speaker 2: their guys and and they welcomed me back. And one
- 26:50Speaker 2: of the things that I want to be sure to mention,
- 26:52Speaker 2: I was standing on the on deck circle before we
- 26:54Speaker 2: walked down on the field to honor Adam, and one
- 26:57Speaker 2: of the season ticket holders who I know I've seen
- 27:00Speaker 2: in spring training leaned down and said, hey, Crush, And
- 27:03Speaker 2: I turned around and he said, hey, man, don't ever
- 27:05Speaker 2: forget how much we loved you and how much we
- 27:08Speaker 2: rooted for you those years. He's like that You'll always
- 27:10Speaker 2: be Crush Davis to us and saying for him to
- 27:13Speaker 2: say that to me in that moment, I was like,
- 27:16Speaker 2: it's hard not to get emotional, you know, because you
- 27:19Speaker 2: think about all the times when you got booed or whatever.
- 27:23Speaker 2: But it really it meant a lot to me, and
- 27:25Speaker 2: it meant it really showed me how much they cared.
- 27:28Speaker 2: So it was it was a special moment for sure.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Yeah, that's awesome. I just kind of I'm sure you've
- 27:34Speaker 4: had time to reflect on everything, and with the weekend
- 27:36Speaker 4: coming up, what would you say you're most proud of
- 27:39Speaker 4: your time in Baltimore. Is there one particular thing? Is
- 27:41Speaker 4: there a multitude of things? It Is there anything you
- 27:44Speaker 4: can kind of put into words. I know it's probably
- 27:47Speaker 4: tough when you're trying to, yeah, what's something to say.
- 27:49Speaker 2: But I've thought about that, and I really appreciate you
- 27:52Speaker 2: asking that. It's hard. It's hard because there are so
- 27:58Speaker 2: many things. Honestly, the thing that I keep coming back
- 28:01Speaker 2: to is the people man like you guys, my teammates, Like,
- 28:06Speaker 2: I'm so thankful that I had such a good group
- 28:08Speaker 2: of people to share it with. And I think about
- 28:10Speaker 2: the people at the stadium that took care of our
- 28:11Speaker 2: wives while we were out there playing. I mean, you
- 28:14Speaker 2: were a part of it, dude, you were a big
- 28:15Speaker 2: part of it. We all had like we were kind
- 28:18Speaker 2: of all on the same spot in our life. We
- 28:19Speaker 2: were all young, we were all married, we were started
- 28:21Speaker 2: having kids together, like we were trying to establish ourselves
- 28:24Speaker 2: as big leaguers and just figure it out. And I
- 28:27Speaker 2: think that's really what to me stands out the most.
- 28:31Speaker 2: I loved being a part of the city of Baltimore.
- 28:33Speaker 2: I had no clue what I was getting into when
- 28:35Speaker 2: I was traded. I had, like I had been to
- 28:37Speaker 2: Baltimore maybe a handful of times as an opposing player
- 28:40Speaker 2: and didn't venture out, like went to the stadium and
- 28:43Speaker 2: went back to the hotel. So getting to do things
- 28:46Speaker 2: like the charity home run derby that we did for
- 28:49Speaker 2: the Children's Hospital, doing Casey Cares, doing Christian Youth athletics,
- 28:52Speaker 2: getting outside of the city and I mean, excuse me,
- 28:55Speaker 2: outside of the stadium and getting into the city. That's
- 28:57Speaker 2: really what I remember the most, and I think that's
- 29:00Speaker 2: kind of what stuck with me. The baseball is the baseball,
- 29:02Speaker 2: you know, I mean, hitting home runs is great, but
- 29:05Speaker 2: being able to kind of rub shoulders with people that
- 29:08Speaker 2: you might not rub shoulders with if you didn't do
- 29:10Speaker 2: what you did, and be a part of something outside
- 29:13Speaker 2: of the game and be feel like you're really a
- 29:16Speaker 2: part of the city to me is kind of what
- 29:18Speaker 2: lasted the most to this day. That's still my favorite house.
- 29:22Speaker 2: I wish we hadn't sold that house, but but yeah,
- 29:27Speaker 2: I think that's probably the thing that I remember the
- 29:29Speaker 2: most is just the people and the relationships that you make.
- 29:32Speaker 5: You know, Chris, I did want to go back to
- 29:36Speaker 5: the end, and I just think, you know, you at
- 29:38Speaker 5: the top of the game. You're one of the most
- 29:40Speaker 5: feared hitters of all time, and you get the contract,
- 29:43Speaker 5: and I think fans and sometimes people falling the mistake
- 29:48Speaker 5: of viewing players almost as robots, like, oh, you know,
- 29:51Speaker 5: he's getting a big contract.
- 29:53Speaker 2: It was a matter.
- 29:54Speaker 5: But you're an ultimate competitor to make the majors. You're
- 29:58Speaker 5: an ultimate competitor to reach the heights that you did
- 30:01Speaker 5: in your career. What was it like from a mental
- 30:05Speaker 5: standpoint going through at the end.
- 30:08Speaker 2: It was tough. I remember hearing that and I got
- 30:11Speaker 2: off social media years ago because I just didn't want
- 30:14Speaker 2: to hear the noise. I had enough to focus on
- 30:18Speaker 2: without having to deal with all that. And I remember
- 30:21Speaker 2: hearing that, well, who cares, He's still rich, And I'm like,
- 30:24Speaker 2: that's you guys. Think that's what drives us like you
- 30:28Speaker 2: if you're if you are a rookie in the big leagues,
- 30:32Speaker 2: you're making over half a million dollars. Like the money
- 30:35Speaker 2: is is I call it monopoly money. It's billionaires paying millionaires.
- 30:39Speaker 2: It's it's that's not what it's about. And so to
- 30:43Speaker 2: your point, Tim, when you're so competitive and you're not
- 30:47Speaker 2: able to compete, and you were able to compete at
- 30:49Speaker 2: a very high level for several years, it is so frustrating.
- 30:53Speaker 2: I mean, I I've told this story to a handful
- 30:56Speaker 2: of people, but I remember one of the nights we
- 30:59Speaker 2: were in d C and I took my hat off
- 31:01Speaker 2: and I was stressed out. It was it was towards
- 31:03Speaker 2: the end of the twenty nineteen season. I was stressed out.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Jill and the girls were back home, so I was.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I was in Baltimore by myself, and I took my
- 31:11Speaker 2: hat off in the dugout and I looked down and
- 31:13Speaker 2: my hair was in my hat, like my hair was
- 31:16Speaker 2: going on. Like that's how stressed out. And aside from
- 31:21Speaker 2: thinking that I was going bald in the middle of
- 31:23Speaker 2: a big league game, I'm like, what do I do?
- 31:26Speaker 2: You know? And I just felt lost, man, and I
- 31:28Speaker 2: didn't know what to do. And I should have reached out.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I really should have reached out to some people around me.
- 31:34Speaker 2: But I don't know if I was embarrassed, if I
- 31:37Speaker 2: was too proud. I just thought I could figure it
- 31:39Speaker 2: out on my own, and I wasn't ever able to
- 31:44Speaker 2: what's really frustrating is going into the twenty twenty season,
- 31:48Speaker 2: I felt like I had had found had kind of
- 31:51Speaker 2: found it again, me and Manny and Scope and was
- 31:54Speaker 2: always joke like in the batting case, like if you
- 31:56Speaker 2: find it, leave it in there for the next guy.
- 31:58Speaker 2: And so I I remember texting or telling Scope I
- 32:03Speaker 2: found it. I found it, you know, and he's like, oh,
- 32:05Speaker 2: leave it for me, leave it for me. But I
- 32:08Speaker 2: was going into spring training and I was I was
- 32:12Speaker 2: crushed again, you know, I was. I was hammering the ball.
- 32:15Speaker 2: I felt so good at the play. Physically, I had
- 32:19Speaker 2: gotten I kind of put a little bit of weight
- 32:21Speaker 2: back on, I've gotten stronger again. And then I'm getting
- 32:24Speaker 2: ready to go to Fort Myers in the world chests
- 32:28Speaker 2: down and so I'm like no. And then we started
- 32:32Speaker 2: back up again in August and it just wasn't the same.
- 32:34Speaker 2: By that time, my knee had been bothering me. It
- 32:37Speaker 2: was just so frustrating because I really wanted that one
- 32:40Speaker 2: last chance to prove that I was worth the money
- 32:43Speaker 2: that they spent on me. And so that's it's hard.
- 32:47Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, man, there's no
- 32:49Speaker 2: blueprint for this, you know. That's why. I think it's
- 32:51Speaker 2: so incredible guys like kersh'all that that can go out
- 32:54Speaker 2: on their own terms. It's so hard, man, It is
- 32:56Speaker 2: just so hard.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Man. What great stuff, Chris. You know, And I've told
- 33:04Speaker 3: Brad this.
- 33:04Speaker 1: One of the great things as a media guy of
- 33:06Speaker 1: that era is I knew there are good guys in that.
- 33:09Speaker 1: It was uniforms winning games for Birdland, and if it
- 33:14Speaker 1: was a tough time, I knew when I walked in there,
- 33:17Speaker 1: you guys would be at your locker to answer whatever
- 33:20Speaker 1: we had. You never ducked it good, bad, or indifferent.
- 33:24Speaker 1: And we saw that in this show today. Man, you
- 33:26Speaker 1: were very honest with your your thoughts. We can't wait
- 33:29Speaker 1: to see Birdland honor you again, along with Storm Davis
- 33:32Speaker 1: and along with the late Jim Russo and lets her
- 33:35Speaker 1: mind the fans again. Tickets are available orioles dot com

- 33:46Speaker 3: He's still as funny as he was.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I cannot well. I talked to him yesterday
- 33:50Speaker 2: and I was like, hey, are you ready? And I'm
- 33:52Speaker 2: gonna tell you how he responded, because, uh, it's just
- 33:55Speaker 2: meet him. But uh, but I went, I mean, I said,
- 33:59Speaker 2: I told him yesterday. I said, whether you like it
- 34:01Speaker 2: or not, Bud, we're in this thing together. And I
- 34:02Speaker 2: told him that from day one, like we got traded together.
- 34:05Speaker 2: And Tommy and I talked more than probably any of
- 34:08Speaker 2: my other teammates more consistently. But I cannot wait to
- 34:13Speaker 2: hear what he has to say at the launch.
- 34:19Speaker 3: He was never dull, that's for darn sure.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Got trade worked out great for you too, and many
- 34:24Speaker 1: and all Birdland, buddy, because twenty twelve through twenty sixteen,
- 34:27Speaker 1: three playoffs, most wins in the league, Buck and the boys,
- 34:31Speaker 1: it was special. Chris, thanks for sharing that look safe
