- 0:11Hello friends. Sean here.
- 0:13It's Wednesday. It's the 20th of November.
- 0:17How are you going? I hope you're going well.
- 0:19I hope that today is looking like a good day or has been a
- 0:22good day, depending on where you are right now and what part of
- 0:26the day you're up to. Ah, but wherever you are, you
- 0:29have chosen to set aside a moment where we are going to
- 0:33continue through this incredible story of Jesus church growing in
- 0:38this book of Acts. And today is is this incredible
- 0:42story. I don't know whether you have
- 0:43ever had this experience where you are going along in your
- 0:47faith and your life. And well, we live in a very
- 0:51individualistic society, don't we?
- 0:53Where our faith can often feel like a very personal thing,
- 0:56where our relationship to God is between US and God.
- 1:00And then we see something or we hear something, or we experience
- 1:04something communally of God or someone else's experience of
- 1:08God. And we think, my goodness, God
- 1:10is so much bigger than my consciousness was allowing.
- 1:14And God surprises us. Well, this reading today is
- 1:18exactly about that. When the Jews think they know
- 1:22exactly how God operates and that he is their God.
- 1:25And all of a sudden they discover, Oh no, our God is
- 1:29actually the God of the whole universe, not just our little
- 1:32tribe. So this is probably a very good
- 1:36timely notice for us to blow open our concept of how big and
- 1:41how broad and how incredible God actually is beyond our little
- 1:45human understanding. So let's share the story
- 1:48together, showing as we read together Acts Chapter 11.
- 2:02Soon the news reached the apostles and other believers in
- 2:05Judea that the Gentiles had received the word of God.
- 2:09But when Peter arrived back in Jerusalem, the Jewish believers
- 2:12criticised him. You entered the home of Gentiles
- 2:17and even ate with them, they said.
- 2:20Then Peter told them exactly what had happened.
- 2:23I was in the town of Joppa, he said.
- 2:26And while I was praying I went into a trance and saw a vision.
- 2:30Something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners
- 2:33from the sky, and it came right down to me.
- 2:37When I looked inside the sheet, I saw all sorts of tame and wild
- 2:41animals, reptiles and birds, and I heard a voice say, Get up
- 2:46Peter, kill and eat them. No, Lord, I replied.
- 2:51I've never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared
- 2:54impure or unclean. But the voice from heaven spoke
- 2:57again. Do not call something unclean if
- 3:01God has made it clean. This happened three times before
- 3:06the sheet and all it contained was pulled back up to heaven.
- 3:09Just then three men who had been sent from say, Saria arrived at
- 3:13the house where we were staying. The Holy Spirit told me to go
- 3:17with them and not to worry that they were Gentiles.
- 3:20These six brothers here accompanied me, and we soon
- 3:24entered the home of the man who had sent for us.
- 3:27He told us how an Angel had appeared to him in his home and
- 3:31told him, Send messengers to Joppa and summon a man named
- 3:35Simon Peter. He will tell you how you and
- 3:38everyone in your household can be saved.
- 3:42As I began to speak, Peter continued.
- 3:45The Holy Spirit fell on them just as he fell on us at the
- 3:48beginning. Then I thought of the Lord's
- 3:51words when he said, John baptised with water, but you
- 3:55will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.
- 3:58And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave
- 4:02us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand
- 4:06in God's way? When the others heard this, they
- 4:10stopped objecting and began praising God.
- 4:13They said we can see that God has also given the Gentiles the
- 4:18privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving eternal life.
- 4:23Meanwhile, the believers who had been scattered during the
- 4:25persecution after Stephen's death travelled as far as
- 4:29Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch of Syria.
- 4:33They preached the word of God, but only to Jews.
- 4:37However, some of the believers who went to Antioch from Cyprus
- 4:41and Cyrene began preaching to the Gentiles about the Lord
- 4:44Jesus. The power of the Lord was with
- 4:47them, and a large number of these Gentiles believed and
- 4:50turned to the Lord. When the church at Jerusalem
- 4:54heard what had happened, they sent Barnabas to Antioch.
- 4:58When he arrived and saw this evidence of God's blessing, he
- 5:01was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay
- 5:06true to the Lord. Barnabas was a good man, full of
- 5:10the Holy Spirit and strong in faith, and many people were
- 5:13brought to the Lord. Then Barnabas went on to Tarsus
- 5:18to look for Saul. When he found him, he brought
- 5:21him back to Antioch. Both of them stayed there with
- 5:24the church for a full year, teaching large crowds of people.
- 5:29It was at Antioch that the believers were first called
- 5:32Christians. During this time some prophets
- 5:36travelled from Jerusalem to Antioch.
- 5:38One of them, named Agabus, stood up in one of the meetings and
- 5:42predicted by the Spirit that a great famine was coming upon the
- 5:46entire Roman world. This was fulfilled during the
- 5:50reign of Claudius, so the believers in Antioch decided to
- 5:53send relief to the brothers and sisters in Judea, everyone
- 5:58giving as much as they could. This they did, entrusting their
- 6:02gifts to Barnabas and Saul to take to the elders of the church
- 6:06in Jerusalem. Ah, Jesus, you are supreme.
- 6:21You are so much bigger than we often in our human limitation
- 6:25are able to give you credit for. But here we see that you and
- 6:30your love for humanity is so much greater than we can
- 6:35possibly imagine. And it's all so easy for us in
- 6:40our modern context to read the story and say, well, of course
- 6:43the gentiles are included in your plan.
- 6:46But Lord, I wonder, in our lives, in our context, who are
- 6:50those that we would struggle to imagine?
- 6:54Have a place in your Kingdom, Lord, open our hearts that we
- 7:00are not limited by the societal values and prejudices that we
- 7:06are exposed to and that shape us and our thinking, but that we
- 7:11can be shaped by your heart, your heart of grace and
- 7:15inclusion. Lord, help us to be an ongoing
- 7:24conduit of your love and grace in this world that through US,
- 7:29people could see and experience the evidence of your presence in
- 7:34our lives and in the world. Our Lord, empower us, transform
- 7:39us, and send us to love unabashedly and continually
- 7:47point back to you. We love you so much Jesus, and
- 7:50we thank you for first loving us.
- 7:53We pray this all in your name, Amen.
