- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, are you kidding?
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: The honor is mine.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: You are such a true artist.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: Like I, you know, I always say this about makeup artistry.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: It's, you know, if you can do makeup artistry the way that you do it, it's like that is such brilliant art.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: You know, it's just, it's just, I don't know.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: I can't really verbalize it, but I want to get started, Joyce.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: I want you to tell us everything.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: I want you to tell us about how you came up with the concept.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: I know there's three products in the line right now, they're all phenomenal.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: And I just yeah.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, there are four, yes, okay, four products, and they're all great.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Like I've used every single one of them, they're all great.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: And I also adore the fact that you have an SPF in there.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's huge to me.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: So I want you to tell us from the beginning how all of this came to fruition and just the whole concept, how it came together.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: So I really wanted to start with skin um before launching um color and makeup and everything because it is so important um to make sure the canvas below your makeup is amazing and smooth and hydrated.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: And so I was like, you know what?
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: I need to come up with the four essential, as like I like to make things as simple as possible.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm not gonna be dropping like 12 products like ASAP and like there's so much going on.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: People get lost in things that I have found this.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: So I was like, what are the four essential products to prepping your skin for makeup that still is very functional in hydrating and protecting your skin from the makeup that you're putting on as well?
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Because that's super important to make sure that after cleansing and toning your skin, that you put on a barrier before your makeup.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Because if you're wearing makeup every day, I wear makeup every day.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Um, my clients obviously are wearing makeup every day.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Um, a lot of people are wearing makeup, even men are wearing like a tinted moisturizer.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: So um that brings me to um, I just wanted the most delicious serum ever that um would take the place of a primer as that first layer of product that you put on after a clean face.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: It is so important that it's not, you know, a primer.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: And working with celebrities and their dermatologists and doctors, um, specifically, like I had a client that just had um really difficult time with her skin and acne.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: And so I learned a lot going through that process of working closely with her team of like skin people um to get it under control.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: And they were like, whatever you do, no primer.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: So um I formulated this just to be like full of hyaluronic acid.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, it is so hydrating and then it also penetrates immediately so that it's amazing under your makeup, any formula of makeup, like it will not coagulate, it will not peel.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: No, no, I call it velvet, I call it velvet because it can feel like velvet, like as soon as you put it on, and you only need a drop.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: That's what I love exactly.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: A little bit goes a long way.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: It's oh my god, velvet is the best description.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Like I have it on my hands right now, it feels so good.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: It's like you want it, it's just amazing, right?
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Like you're kind of like, oh my god, I feel good.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: You're like on, you're just like rubbing, like you're just let me touch it.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I absolutely love it, and I think that you know, to get that formula down, I think that was probably definitely difficult because you know, I remember when I first tried it.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: For me, um, I can tell you as a woman of color, you know, one of the biggest problems I have is textured skin.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: And for up, that's a huge problem, as I'm sure you know, you know, it's like it's a problem, something we all deal with.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: And for the longest time, it was like I couldn't put foundation on because no matter what I did, like you said, like the primers, they didn't do anything, they weren't helpful.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: It makes it worse, to be honest, because it's a constant um cycle of clogging and smoothing, and exactly, it's exactly that.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: It it's a barrier between your makeup, so it's protecting you and it's giving that like filter, it's not a filter feeling, it's like velvety.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Um, where, like I said, to me it was really important that I mean people are the vitamin C is such a like epidemic right now, and it's amazing.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: And I love an oil at night on top of the serum, um, to add like an extra zhuzh.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: But under makeup, it's sticky, it's yeah, I feel I'm just not into it.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: And as a makeup artist, and like I don't only have a certain amount of time, especially if some drama hits or someone's late, and I need to be troubleshooting and fast.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: And that's why I was like, you know what?
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: These are like I know how you said the three products.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: I always leave out the mask because that's like a once a week, two times a week thing.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: It's the other three products are literally every day.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, love it.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, mask is so fun.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Did you try it yet?
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, you have no idea how much fun I have with this product.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: I'm I don't know if you know this, Joyce, but I am a huge mask like fiend.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: Like I love face masks.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: And when I saw I'm trying to know your opinion.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, it's phenomenal.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: It's not only gorgeous when I put it on, I feel like a princess, but it's like it makes my skin just like smooth.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: I feel like that's like the really the cornerstone of your line that I've noticed.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: It's just you have the smoothness to your overall skin and it leaves it so that you can now, like you said, do your makeup.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: Or even if you don't do your makeup, I mean, if you're somebody who just puts on, like, you know, like a tinted moisturizer or SPF, it's gonna look beautiful, you know, throughout the day.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: So I like it.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: I think it's amazing.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: That makes me so excited.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: I love hearing that because I put a lot into that mask to make it happen.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: And I had so many issues getting an FDA approved at first because I had a chemist in Paris that I was working with, and I just wanted it to be so juicy and yummy and all these things that we're just not allowed to do here.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: And then I had to reformulate and I was like so distraught over it.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: But then I found like the formula that worked to be just the same and um have just as much glitter, and so um it really does hydrate and it tightens your skin and has that smoothing effect, which to me is very important um to have my client look their very best.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: It's not just about piling on a bunch of makeup, because like I do love to run with the idea of like diverting attention or like fake it till you make it.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Like my whole like career is based off of those kind of things.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: But it's like, yes, makeup is amazing.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: You have a bruise on your face for whatever reason, you can cover it right up.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: But on a daily basis, I I want to, you know, kind of promote like the beauty that everyone's skin is, and like if you can get away with doing a tinted moisturizer instead of a full cake feeling, like thicker, you know what I'm saying.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: It's like it'd be great if everyone could do a little the huge glam look, really.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Right, right, right.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: No, I think that that's so important because I'm not gonna lie, like I'm in my 30s and as a doctor, I have no time for makeup.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: Like when I put on makeup, it's like literally like dabbing and then blending with my hands and like, you know what I mean?
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: I'm doing 15 things.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: So for me, this line is so amazing because I deal with skincare lines every day.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: And it's like, well, this skincare line is gonna make you have brighter skin in like two weeks or whatever, and that's great.
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: But when it comes to practicality, I mean, let's be real here.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: You know, what do we want from our skincare?
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: We want it to be functional and on an everyday level.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: And that includes doing your makeup, it includes putting your best face forward, right?
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: So, like that's where like you've just really hit the nail on the head because I can use the serum and I feel like, okay, my skin feels better, it looks better, whatever I put on top, it makes me feel better to know that, you know, that I can keep on this problem.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: And so I want to I want to ask you like all the details to be honest, because I um, you know, for me, I I said this uh a while ago on another podcast, and I said, you should never buy a skincare brand that doesn't have some sort of SPF integrated into it.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: And I feel like if you have a brand that does not have an SPF, then you gotta question that as a consumer.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: Like, what are you doing?
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: So I love I love that you have that as a makeup setting mist and SPF in it.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: So, like, how was that?
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: Like, was that something you always wanted to do, or like how did that come about, that specific product?
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Um, as a makeup artist, I of course wanted like the perfect setting spray.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: And because I'm super selfish and need to wear SPF more than some other people because I'm so fair.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Um, although I do know that everyone should wear SPF just because um skin cancer is real, and you know, I might be someone that will get something sooner than the next or whatever.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: God bless all of us.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: I hope no one gets anything.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: I have had um skin cancer like cut out of my shoulder already.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: I'm 40.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, it's real.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: And to me, it's like selfishly I needed that, and I'm also just forcing it on everybody.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: And yeah, what's amazing, like super important to me, someone that has to wear SPF every day, um, because I have rosacea skin.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: So a lot of the questions have been like, can people with sensitive skin use these products?
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: And it's based around my sensitive skin.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: And with that being said, I like try everything to not have any red in my skin, which that means SPF is very important.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: So adding that to um the makeup setting spray, which is not just makeup setting spray, I sometimes just spray it on to go out.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: But the most genius thing about it is that it has the SPF in it and it dries matte.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: That was something so important to me.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Because if you do just run out and you spray it over like your serum, and that's you're just like, oh, I'm confident.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean, makeup was originally started by like for daily, daily use, not like on camera or movies and things, like, oh, I have a blemish, and you kind of like pat out the color or whatever, you know what I mean?
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: And now we're like all so into the looks, which is so fun.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: It's like when you're just running out the door and your skin is just being hydrated for over like a couple weeks, and you really see a difference, like where you're confident to just run out and you can just spray the come through flawless and it kind of mats out and has like a filtered effect to it and be protected.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: I'm like, this is amazing.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, absolutely, and I love that you did that because I'm not gonna lie, like for me, um, the matte look, like I got I got so turned off for a long time because you know, I saw these influencers and they were going like way too crazy with the matte, you know, it was like abnormally matte, like like dead, you know what I mean?
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: So I was like, you know, like this is really giving matte like the idea of having matte uh a matte canvas a bad brand, right?
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: So it was like as somebody who has always enjoyed makeup, I was like, well, this is I feel like having matte skin and a finish before I apply anything is just a standard, you know, it makes my makeup look better, it lets my makeup products actually work the way, you know.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: So that's I feel like you know, you've just hit so many fundamentals, and that's why I'm like, I I guess I'm being a little redundant, but you have like you've hit so many fundamentals that I think we as makeup consumers don't think about, you know, and we we just go for like the the new primer or the new foundation or the new whatever, but it's like you need to think about what these products are doing and how they play a role in your overall makeup look.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: So that's where I'm just like so blown away with everything.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: Um, now my not gonna lie, is the facelift.
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, it's so gorgeous.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: I love packaging, I love everything about it, and it's just like I said, you know, before we started this, it's like when I use it, I use it like a primer and I put it on and I feel like my goals on like it used to in my 20s.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: Like, no joke, like I've never had that before.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: And I'm just like blown away.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Okay, so um, of course, it's a syringe packaging because I was like, this has to be like just so funny, and like my personality behind the fact that it's like Botox in a bottle, like the facelift.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Because I don't know, like, so if you use just like a couple drops of it, a couple pumps, and say, like you're doing, like I have right here from skin damage, really, really like I hate to say it, like crunchy skin.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: So when I put it on, I put it here and I really work it into my skin and going up and out, up and out, up and out.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: And then the same here, I'll put on the sides and then I work it up and I work it up, you know.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: And um, my clients will be like, oh, I can see how like I can feel it working, and I can see like how and where I'm putting it, you know what I mean, and massaging it into your skin.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Um, you start to see the results like in 30 seconds, it's beyond amazing.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: I do have friends that put it on their entire face because they want to look like a wax figure and they love that.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Um, and definitely again, like you said, like you use it like a primer.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: I always say just make sure that you have your barrier, which is um the serum, so that you're protected.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: And then um, once that's penetrated into your skin, I kind of like put the serum on.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: I make my coffee, and when I come back to doing makeup, I put the um facelift on first.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: And I use it here and a lot here, and on the sides of my eyes.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: And sometimes I'll just dab it in my T-zone because it also like kind of mattifies you a little bit more if you're like oily skin.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: And also I wanted to say, like, you know, you remember when all those products came out that were like poor blurring products, like Dr.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Brandt something, and then, but like those products for me never work because they always left my skin, like the dry patches, really, really dry.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: They were just terrible.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: So I, you know, for me, like when I tried it the first time, I was like, this is one of the things I look for, is that like poor blurring effect.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: And I immediately saw that, and not to mention, like, it definitely does lift, which I to me, I don't know how insane, right?
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: Mind blown.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Like, how did you do that?
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: I know, isn't it crazy?
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: I'm so obsessed with it.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Like, I I honestly I put it on my hands and my wrists now.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh god, god forbid, like my hand is in a shot of the real housewives and it's like wrinkly looking or whatever.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh my god, I'm just behind the scenes and I'm still like being shot.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: And you know, I'll put it here and it really like smooths it from like the wrists up to my hands, and it's like, I don't know, I'm obsessed.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: I put it on my chest when I wake up.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: I have these lines now.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: It helps to just smooth it out instantly.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: So I just feel better.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: I think that a lot of things I think for myself, like beauty is really from within and your mindset, that's where it starts, you know what I mean?
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: And it's like if you're walking around and you're gorgeous, but your you know, head is down to the ground, your shoulders are down, you're just depressed looking, like you know, it's like you're exuding that, you know what I mean?
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: So for me, it's like I've just like, okay, you have the it's all mindset.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: You gotta tell yourself, like, okay, this is gonna be great day.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: I'm gorgeous, and then and then you're like, what are those lines and my you know, and then I'm like, here it is, blur it out, keep the mindset going and keep it moving.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's my thing because like I think it's so important, like we all have issues, um, things happening in our lives, struggles, and no one's is more important than the others, or worse, you know what I mean?
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Like when it's your issue, it's your issue.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: But I really believe like in um overcoming part of that and getting to the other side of it is how you present yourself, like I said, like the in the mindset, but also like don't let them see you sweat it.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, blur your face out, honey.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: If you haven't slept all night because of whatever's going on in your life, and you're like, oh my god, I have to be on camera or I have to be at this PTA meeting and look like I'm not frazzled.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, these are just like the essentials, just to keep you feeling good about yourself, which makes everything and everyone around you better, in my opinion.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: You just like, you know, I always love talking about this um on air because I think body positivity is just so it's so thrown around, like the word is so thrown around around, right?
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: Like the phrase, but like no one really addresses like the meaning of it and what that really means on a day-to-day level.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: And I think what you just said to me, for me, it resonates.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: That to me resonates as positivity is if I can use something or whatever my little hack is to get the look I need to do the day, you know, to do the work.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: Get it gone.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, get it done.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: And then what I really love too is like getting back to like the product, but it's to me like it's all a part of it, you know.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: But um, I love that you tried it and like even your skin tone being like so much more pignant than mine.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: It was so important to me and very hard to get this product to do what it does and to not just be white.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, casting.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: Yep, yep, yep, yep, but it doesn't matter.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Oh god, it took literally years to figure this out.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: And um I don't know, I'm just so excited because it really is for everyone.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: Like I said, I have very sensitive skin, so I selfishly like I made this for myself and like what I need for work, you know what I mean?
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I mean that's what I feel like that's when the best discoveries happen is when there's a personal connection and you're trying to solve a personal thing, you know, that you care about.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: And I can definitely slap my name on something, right?
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I can tell that you've really thought these products out.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: That's why you know, initially I asked you, I'm like, you know, like it's not a huge line right now.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: There's not a ton of products, but every product hits home.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: It's like a home run, you know, and it serves a purpose.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: And I think that's my favorite thing about like, you know, when I see lines like this is that I don't want redundancy in products.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't want redundant products, and I think, you know, we're seeing that more and more as we like, you know, progress through the skincare phase and everyone's launching a line.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: But it's like, you know, when I find products like this, I'm like, oh my gosh, like so much thought has gone into it.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: So I really appreciate that as a consumer.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: Gosh, thank you.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: That makes me the happiest.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: I honestly I put everything I have into it of just to keep it simple, affordable, gorgeous, like just sitting on your counter, it looks amazing, let alone um the functionality behind each one and how all four products have hyaluronic acid.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: It's like so important to continue to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't know what's going on with me, but I just I'm like, I can't get enough uh hydration.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: So that's why I'm like so obsessed to have everything that I'm working with have the hyaluronic acid in it.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: And I think as we like um age, you know, even after like I feel like you're 21, you just need to start thinking about like right, why do I need hyaluronic acid?
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: Why do I need these things that are gonna help me plump my skin and keep it maintained?
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: And I think this is like these products are for, I love this.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: Is one of my favorite parts is that these products that you've created are for everyone.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: It's not one demographic, it's not for one type of woman or man, it's for everybody.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: Like we can all use them.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: And the fact that, you know, that's there intrinsically in your line is huge.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, I actually want to uh talk to you about the formulation side of things because I know this must have taken forever to create, you know, the the product.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: So, how was that journey for you like as a bus as a businesswoman and like as an entrepreneur?
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: Like, how was the whole formulation side of things?
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Well, the formulation side of things, I have to say, was not easy.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: And a lot of my testing and of the ideas I did literally started four years ago.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: And with my chemist that I was talking about Paris and things were just like going and it's, you know, what seemed like, oh my God, this is amazing.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: And then once it was like, okay, well, these three cannot be FDA approved.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: And it was like having to come up with a like the facelift, not leaving a cast of white, you know, for what this product does and the ingredients, that's what it does.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: It leaves like whiteness on your face, like a powdery kind of, you know what I mean?
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: So just to come up with the way it would work and the functionality of it, and then how um it also corresponds with makeup and foundation is so important.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: And you have to be so careful that you put only the thinnest amount on of like the facelift.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: It's really about getting it into your skin, not like you layer it on and then you put makeup on and then it gets all like messy.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: There's like so many different technicalities, but um just also um oh my god, let's talk about price point.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: Like it's so so accessible, and I really love that too.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: You know, you've made the pricing like, I mean, honestly, it's very affordable for like the quality of product.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: And I just I don't know how you did that.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, that must have been a hard decision.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: I don't either.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I hope we're making money because I don't know how we did that either.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: No, I mean it was difficult because I was said, you know, um, throughout my career, that's one of the most asked questions, um, even from literally 20 years ago, of people saying, Oh, I saw you on Girls Next Door using this product.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, is it, you know, and this is at someone's book signing.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: So it wasn't even like on Instagram, obviously we didn't have that.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: So it'd be like, you know, somewhere in person, and I'm like waiting for my clients of doing a book signing.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: So you see their fans and they're like, Oh, I saw you using this.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: I was using something that was kind of like it, but it's not great.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Do you have any recommendations of something that, you know, is affordable, more affordable?
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: And then it's like then too, all the DMs are, you know, I saw your breakdown on Chloe Kardashian's um back then it was like some app or something, but like that was a$1,200 Sephora moment.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: If you were to get all of those things, like what can I get instead of that that's more affordable?
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: So it was really important that for my community as a single mom of four children that is, you know, working and I love sparkly things myself, but my kids love even more sparkly things.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: And I'm always last.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: So I was like, you know what?
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: I need to come up, like as I was coming up with the formulas, and then um, you know, the packaging is everything, it has to be so dope.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: And then we yeah, packaging is so cool.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't, I was gonna actually ask you about that.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: I was like, how hard was that to find like somebody who can do this custom packaging?
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: Because it's such a cool concept.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: Like, I love the syringe.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I love the syringe.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Yes, it was like really just the idea of the syringe.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: I was really like, it just has to be a syringe.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: Like, I gotta figure this out.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: So we figured it out.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: Um, obviously, because we have it now, but it was like just funny because people are like, What a syringe?
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: I'm like, Yes, it has to be a syringe because it's just funny and it's dope.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: And I'm all about like the aesthetic of things too.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: So um, and I wanted something that was feeling more clean, modern, and timeless.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: So that's why I chose to do like the mirror um packaging.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: And who isn't like staring at themselves all day on their Instagram selfies and whatever?
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: I'm like, let's just add a little bit more narcissism to the world with the mirror packaging.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Tag us, please.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Tag us and let us know.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: Like, um, I'm so obsessed with everyone's um input and how excited people are.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, learning how to use the product, you know, for the first time, you're like, oh, I get it.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: I didn't have to put so much of that facelift on to get it to really work.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: So a lot of you know, there's the questions, you know, where people are like, wait, I thought you said like the makeup doesn't like coagulate or move or flake off or whatever, and I'm having this issue.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: And it's like, oh yeah, you don't need that much.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: It's a little bit goes a long way.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: And for$25, it's like to me, unbelievable.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: No, it's amazing.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: And I feel like the um the concept of like balling up and pilling is like so crucial that you've got it down, and it's absolutely something that I hate in products when they do that, because it's like, you know, you finally get this like you know, like the canvas that you want, and then you put on and you're like, oh, you know, like gosh, there goes my whole day, you know, and it's just like yeah, it's the worst.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: So I feel like you just having that, like, like I said, you know, there's so many components that are just intrinsically in the products that I feel like only you could have created because you have so much experience as a makeup artist.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: And that's really where I want to go next is really asking you about some of your favorite memories um doing makeup.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: You know, like I know that you've, like I said, you've done makeup for some of the biggest names, you know, in the industry.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: And I would love to hear about some of your, I guess, war stories or like happy memories.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: Well, I know I can't believe it.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm honestly so honored and humbled and have so much gratitude to having worked with so many divas, like of the essence of like what a real like old school diva is.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: And I mean from Mariah Carey, like, are you kidding?
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh my God.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: The things I've been really like included in on are just so amazing.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: I'm so grateful.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: And the powerhouses of all these women, too.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: I learned a lot from um, you know, being around the strength, the power, the talent.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: And um, of course, like Chris Jenner doing her makeup every morning, like our five o'clock, you know, 5 a.m.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: glams.
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: You know, she's already working and dealing in New York.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: And I would hear all of those conversations business-wise.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: I learned so much from her.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: And same, like, even when she was, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you, but like I say, like Chris is literally one of my favorite people.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: Like, I love her work ethic.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: I love how she's just like go, go, go all the time.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: So yeah, no, I mean, she does not stop.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: And there's something about her that she so eloquently um and with grace, yeah, you know, I've seen her like throughout the day.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, let's not get it twisted.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: There's moments in anyone's life where like they get up, like their temperature rises or something.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: But over a 10 year span, I think I know the woman, you know, and it's like to learn from someone who keeps composure and grace in everything that they do, and um also knows how to um keep that power, like just in business, whether it's like we want you to do this, and you're like, well, I don't really want to do that.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, no, I'm not gonna do it that way, but I will do it this way.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Or, you know, I just learned a lot of those little nuances of business.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, priceless, right?
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: And then just even uh working with JLo.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh my God, are you kidding?
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Like, that's a whole other camp and entity.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: And I mean, wow, what a woman and career she has.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: Um, Nicki Minaj, I've just learned so much.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Like, I went on tour with her.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: That was the second tour, I went on tour first with uh Demi Lovato, and that was so much fun.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: And that was more like a press tour, but I really went on real tour with Nikki Minaj, and I was pregnant the entire time.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: She didn't even know I was pregnant until six and a half, seven months, and I popped out.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: So she couldn't even believe it.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: So it was like, you know, the power of women and the respect, and you know, just I learned a lot from um Nikki as well with business, and you know, you just really have to have the want to get up, show up, and just make things happen.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: It's not easy, especially in this industry.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: Like anyone that's listening that really would just desire to be in a position like I've been blessed to have.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, you have to know too, like you sacrifice your life.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: And I used to say, um, I'm really good at living everyone else's life.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Like I'm on someone's yacht, I'm on someone's private plane, but I missed all my cousins' weddings, with the exception of one.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: And I have like, I think, is it 33 cousins?
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: And no one ever asked me to be a bridesmaid because they know my ass probably can't show up.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: So they're like, there's those things.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: But when you really are the person that has the work ethic and you want to show up and you make things happen, you really can get to a goal.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: I tell my kids every day, even though they're three and then twins that are five, and then my nine-year-old son, I make them say every day, I can do anything I put my mind to because, and like 10 times over, you know, because it's so important.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: You know, you gotta you gotta talk yourself into like just getting out of bed sometimes.
- 31:43SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, absolutely, and you know what?
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: It's so I just love this because everything you just said, that is all in your line.
- 31:52SPEAKER_02: Like somehow you've put all of that emotion in the products you're because you've given that to everyday, you know, everyday women everywhere because we I want to bring the luxury and the celebrity um yeah, luxury that's at hand for celebrities to everyone's home.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: That was my goal.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Focus on what we need to focus on, right?
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's that's like one of the biggest things for me is like in the makeup industry.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: And I I would love to get your opinion on this, is that you know, for the longest time I saw, you know, all these Instagram influencers and I was like, you know, so confused about like what they were doing because I'm like, no one has time to sit in front of their freaking camera for eight hours a day and go nowhere.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: Like, we need realistic stuff in the makeup industry.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: And so, like, when I see um professionals such as yourself launch products, I get so excited because I'm like, thank goodness, because now this is something I can rely on.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: This is something I can put in my bag and I know it's gonna work, gonna fail me and it's not gonna give up on me.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: And and that emotion is everything, like it's everything, you know, as as busy women.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: Like, I really appreciate that because um also um being that I'm an artist that has turned down doing a lot of different posting, paid posting and things, like if it wasn't authentic to who I am or what I am as far as a makeup artist or mother, or you know, if it didn't fit, I wouldn't just take the money because I wanted to, I wanted people to know.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: Like, if I'm gonna sign off on something, that means that there's something great that about the product.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm not just gonna put my name or like the my approved, it's approved, like just because like you know, you can tell when people are getting their paycheck, you know what I mean?
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: And so I'm really happy that I made those choices for the last like eight years.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: Um, because now with my own products, like people know they're curious.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Um, if they don't know, like, oh, I wonder, like, she must, you know, it's only four SKUs.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: What is it all about?
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: It must be like essential, which it is, you know.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: And um, it's just nice to hear you say all that because you really see like what I was trying to put out.
- 34:11SPEAKER_02: So I'm like absolutely see it.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: And you know, I just you know, I'm I'm just in awe of the whole line.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: Like, I really mean that, you know, and everyone listening, like you guys don't understand.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: Like, I can honestly tell you as a woman of color, I had acne growing up, I had the scars, I had all that pro the problem areas, you know what I mean?
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: And like, especially growing up, like I'm in my mid-30s and growing up in a time where I couldn't find my own foundation shade until I mixed three different colors, it was mare, you know what I mean?
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: And so like now I see the evolution of makeup and artistry, and I'm sitting here like this is phenomenal, you know what I mean?
- 34:48SPEAKER_02: Like I wish like I knew you or lived next door to you because I would have been like, you know, like bugging you every day.
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: Because it's like, you know, I I I just feel like it's such a it's more than just makeup.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: It's it's a statement.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: It's a statement for so many of us that struggled for so long to find the simple basics that we needed for day-to-day better about ourselves, you know?
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: And so it's a lot more than just makeup.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: And like, I don't know, I just I I just love seeing like good products come from genuine people.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: I think that's like one of my favorite things about this podcast is that I get I get to host amazing human beings, you know, and just great.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: So I want to actually, I want to round out the episode and I want to get your advice for all of the like budding artists out there.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: I know the makeup industry is so saturated with like a lot of you know newcomers, young professionals.
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: So I want you to really give us like some, I guess, uh words of wisdom, you know, for anyone who wants to go into professional makeup artistry.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: Um, any advice?
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: Yes, of course.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: Um, for anyone that wants to break into this industry, um, you really do just, I know this sounds crazy, but you will find like a lot of people show up late.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: They don't even show up.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: It's the most insane thing.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: But like I always say half of half of the formula is showing up and showing up early and ready to go and willing.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: And when you show up, you're not like, okay, so what's our like like what's when are we leaving?
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: Like what time are tails like up?
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: Like when are we out of here?
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: You know, like don't like be there in the moment, always be learning something because even though you're not on a job that you're really wanting, but there's steps to get there, because listen, it's not easy.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: There are kids that are very talented that would hit up um a thousand in a row DMs to some of my clients and they got their attention and then they happened to be very talented, and then boom, they're still on their glam team, but that's not everybody.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: So, like myself, um oh my god, like 22 years ago, we had something called the Kelly book because I there was not even a dot-com really, like, let alone like uh I know MySpace.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: Remember MySpace?
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: And then it was like, you know, it's like, oh my god, girl, like you it's word of mouth, it's showing up and doing the work, and then directors, producers, everyone around you is looking.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: And you get into these jobs that you don't really think you're gonna learn something from, or like you're just not into it.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: Don't get discouraged, keep pushing, and then make sure you have a takeaway from every job that you do.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: Because for me, it was like I learned lighting, I learned how to do hair, uh, different tricks of hair, even where like I could totally do your hair and makeup if I needed to.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: And what's interesting is like right now in my career, it's a full circle moment because I took four years off of the day in, day out.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: So I took myself out of um working with a lot of people who obviously need their their everyday person, you know what I mean?
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: Because I have four children and I wanted to experience um really like being at home with my kids and doing clients here and there and whatever.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: So with that being said, it's like you you just gotta hit the pavement and keep running 100 miles per hour.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: And um I don't know, never look back.
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: So and then when you need a break, it's like I said, full circle to where now um you know, people have their everyday person, and then I'm kind of coming in as like when that person's busy or whatever.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, just how it works.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: So you want to keep your relationships building and never um nothing is that serious that you need to have drama with people.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: It's really hard.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: I've found in the last like two years to stay away from drama, and there's so many people that want your job, they're willing to lie, they're willing to make maybe a little thing that's dramatic happening within like a group um of people, and they run with it for their advantage.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: You just gotta be really careful, you know.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: Don't get into the drama, stay focused, and just um consistency is really the main ingredient.
- 39:09SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: That's that's the best.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: And oh my god, the best thing that I ever learned in life is no one cares about your problems, okay?
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: They just don't.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: So don't start going to set and talking about it unless it's like you're really like friendly with the people that you're working with, and your personality is like mine, where like you're making fun of yourself, but you're dropping like the craziest thing.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: You're like, what happened?
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: But literally, like just always be like that person that someone's gonna see that's gonna build them up because that's our job is to get that person on stage, to get that person in front of the camera.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: So that's something that was told to me like 25 years ago.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: And I literally said that because I kid you not, one of my mentors, best one of the best surgeons I've ever had the honor of, like, you know, shadowing, literally said the same thing you said.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no problems, show up to work every day with a smile on your face, do the best you can and go home and then cry at home and call a friend, but don't do that at work, you know.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: Which is like the shower and cry or whatever.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, but that's that's the thing.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: I think that for me, like that's how my personality worked for me.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: Um, where yes, I have talent, but I think that my willingness just to like be team player, like, oh, okay, this girl, she looks tired today.
- 40:37SPEAKER_01: What's up, what's up, what's gonna go?
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: You know, I start the party, I'm like, okay, hi everybody, we gotta start shooting.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: She's falling asleep, or just like keep it light, you know.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, be a ray of light.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: And I think, you know, that's the best advice I think anyone could ever receive.
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, that to applies to like every like facet and every career.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: So I love that you said that.
- 41:01SPEAKER_02: And I love everything about your line, Joyce.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: I think it's really brilliant.
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: It's truly um, and you know, what an honor.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: Thank you for giving me this opportunity for this honor.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: It has been truly my pleasure to host you.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: And I would love if you ever have the time to come back on the show.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: I would love to host you again anytime.
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: I would love.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much.
