- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to you. Con men's basketball coaches showed Dan
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hurley with US Huskies looking ahead to Markqutt. We'll get
- 0:06Speaker 1: to that in a couple of moments, but we just
- 0:08Speaker 1: talked about Creighton and how you know, the Blue Jays
- 0:12Speaker 1: scored ninety one and won the game at home at
- 0:15Speaker 1: Gamble the bounce back though, I really liked at Villanova,
- 0:20Speaker 1: you got eighteen thousand. They're just looking for blood. They're
- 0:24Speaker 1: on a roll. They've won six games in a row,
- 0:26Speaker 1: coming in seven of eight. I think the only game
- 0:29Speaker 1: they had lost was to you at home. What was
- 0:33Speaker 1: the difference as you viewed it from your you know,
- 0:36Speaker 1: standing there on the court, but also afterwards, because it
- 0:39Speaker 1: looked to me like the big guys were really protecting
- 0:42Speaker 1: the rim a lot better and it was just a
- 0:44Speaker 1: whole lot of just more urgency defensively.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I thought, Yeah, I.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Mean, you know, obviously, you you know, you credit the opponent,
- 0:53Speaker 3: you know that just again like Creighton played played lights out,
- 0:57Speaker 3: you know, offensively, making shots. You know that if they
- 1:02Speaker 3: you know, played they're able to kind of repeat that performance,
- 1:06Speaker 3: you know more, you know during the you know, during
- 1:09Speaker 3: the season, obviously they've been dealing with some heavy stuff
- 1:11Speaker 3: with with the Harper family, the Dick's family.
- 1:15Speaker 2: You know, so they've been going through it.
- 1:16Speaker 3: But you get out of that game and now you're
- 1:19Speaker 3: you're you know, you're playing elimination games. You know, these
- 1:22Speaker 3: are all been playoff games for us, and and uh,
- 1:24Speaker 3: you know, the ad Villainova game, just having the you know,
- 1:28Speaker 3: a team that's an ncable, a tournament team, a team
- 1:30Speaker 3: that's uh having a great year.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And it's gonna you know, it's competing at the top
- 1:36Speaker 2: of the league.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Know when you're going into an environment, you know, to
- 1:41Speaker 3: play against a team that that if you don't win
- 1:43Speaker 3: that game, you have no you know, real chance to
- 1:46Speaker 3: win the regular season. So it was uh, you know,
- 1:49Speaker 3: gun you know it was I gotten to your head
- 1:52Speaker 3: type of game. But it was one of those you know,
- 1:54Speaker 3: life or death moments for the team relative to you know,
- 1:58Speaker 3: trying to win, uh A, and you know, we showed up.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I think so much of the how this is gonna go,
- 2:05Speaker 3: it's obviously, you know, I put a lot of it
- 2:08Speaker 3: on Taris because he is the one for us that
- 2:14Speaker 3: as a center, you know, your your defense, your I protection,
- 2:18Speaker 3: your ballscreen defense. I mean he's at the center of
- 2:20Speaker 3: all of it. And uh, you know, Taras set the
- 2:23Speaker 3: tone with how we started the game both offensively with
- 2:27Speaker 3: the paint presence and then defensively with the paint presence
- 2:30Speaker 3: and rebounding with the paint presence. And if we get
- 2:34Speaker 3: that version of Taris, we're we're very hard to beat.
- 2:38Speaker 3: If we get the other version of Taris, like the
- 2:42Speaker 3: seat the Hall game at Home, uh, you know, we
- 2:45Speaker 3: become a much more vulnerable team.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:47Speaker 1: No one wants to be vulnerable this time of year,
- 2:49Speaker 1: that's for sure. Caravan, We're gonna talk to him later
- 2:53Speaker 1: in the show. Uh. You you said something after the
- 2:57Speaker 1: Greaton game that you know, got everybody got a everyone's attention.
- 3:01Speaker 1: You said he was like a cargo ship. He couldn't
- 3:03Speaker 1: move out there. I wondered. I wanted to ask you
- 3:06Speaker 1: this in a pregame, but I didn't want to do that.
- 3:07Speaker 1: So I'm asking now, was that a motivational comment or
- 3:11Speaker 1: were you just checking reality and telling him you got
- 3:15Speaker 1: to be moving better than that, or we're in trouble.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I mean, it's kind of a message to everybody in
- 3:20Speaker 3: the you know. And but but really it was a
- 3:23Speaker 3: concern that Alex was dealing with something I guess in
- 3:29Speaker 3: his quad and and the knee area that you know,
- 3:35Speaker 3: it just it it, it really put him. It really
- 3:40Speaker 3: compromised his ability to move that night. And if you
- 3:43Speaker 3: look at even the three point shots that he took,
- 3:45Speaker 3: like literally the middle of the ball was hitting the
- 3:48Speaker 3: dead front rim.
- 3:49Speaker 2: It was like the ball couldn't get above the.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Rim, and he was you know, and and if if
- 3:55Speaker 3: that was going to be the case in that game,
- 3:57Speaker 3: I probably you know, I wasn't really expecting to see him,
- 4:02Speaker 3: you know, that compromised, and in retrospect, you know, I
- 4:07Speaker 3: was basically sending a message to Alex, like if you
- 4:09Speaker 3: can't you.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Know, you're a soldier, you're a warrior.
- 4:12Speaker 3: If there's a if you can't go because of this injury,
- 4:16Speaker 3: you know, like then then like I don't, we don't,
- 4:19Speaker 3: we don't want to play you, you know, like we
- 4:21Speaker 3: need you to be healthy, you know, for March, so.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Kind of you know, and then.
- 4:28Speaker 3: You know that he was able to rehabit, take reps
- 4:31Speaker 3: off in practice, and come out moving much better since
- 4:35Speaker 3: the cargo ship comment.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, that's in baseball, they call those guys gamers, and
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know, managers love them because they they play one
- 4:48Speaker 1: hundred and sixty games, if there's one hundred and sixty
- 4:50Speaker 1: games we played. But you're right, if you're really there's
- 4:54Speaker 1: a difference between being hurt and injured. Do you think
- 4:57Speaker 1: I don't know, people say there really is a difference.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, just put the film on.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I mean, look at the Villainova game, and look at
- 5:03Speaker 3: the Saint John's game, and look at the Seaton Hall game,
- 5:06Speaker 3: and look at the Creighton game. You know, the guy
- 5:08Speaker 3: was you know, he was laboring. I mean I played him,
- 5:11Speaker 3: I don't know what he played twenty like somewhere low
- 5:14Speaker 3: twenty minutes in that game. And again maybe he shouldn't
- 5:18Speaker 3: have played. Maybe he should have said, hey, listen, I
- 5:22Speaker 3: can't go tonight. But you know, then, you know, for
- 5:26Speaker 3: me to play him that amount of minutes, I want
- 5:29Speaker 3: to play him forty minutes because he's here, because he's irreplaceable,
- 5:32Speaker 3: the things he does for your team, and he's so clutch,
- 5:36Speaker 3: and it's obviously you can't play him forty minutes too
- 5:38Speaker 3: many times.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But U but he.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, he's a guy's a gamer, and and
- 5:43Speaker 3: he wants to be out there, and he's about all
- 5:45Speaker 3: the right things, and that might have been a game
- 5:49Speaker 3: that maybe we should have we should have went with
- 5:53Speaker 3: Jalen Stewart as a starter, and maybe he shouldn't have
- 5:56Speaker 3: played well.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Anyway, he did play Villain was outstanding. Then the Saint
- 6:01Speaker 1: John's game, which that was a big time game. Now
- 6:04Speaker 1: they came in winning thirteen in a row. You had
- 6:06Speaker 1: gone to the Garden winning eighteen in a row, and
- 6:09Speaker 1: they took the game away from you in the last
- 6:11Speaker 1: five minutes. But from start to finish at Hartford, at
- 6:15Speaker 1: People's Bank Arena, there was a different feel. Now, I
- 6:18Speaker 1: don't know, you're on the sideline, it probably sounds different
- 6:21Speaker 1: to you. We're up a little higher now. It sounded
- 6:24Speaker 1: really loud, and it's and and the crowd was on
- 6:28Speaker 1: their feet a lot. I'm talking twenty to twenty five
- 6:31Speaker 1: times during that game. Not to me was awesome.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Yeah, they were great.
- 6:35Speaker 3: I mean right from the anthem, they were dialed in
- 6:37Speaker 3: and it was, you know, just a game with you know,
- 6:41Speaker 3: like you know, two top you know, top level teams,
- 6:47Speaker 3: a lot of intensity, you know, relative to you know,
- 6:50Speaker 3: they're being a rivalry that's being built now with Saint
- 6:55Speaker 3: John's improving so much under coach Patino and his staff
- 6:59Speaker 3: and ex players, and yeah, we were just you know,
- 7:02Speaker 3: we were ready to go. We felt like the first
- 7:04Speaker 3: game we gifted them so much in terms of live ball,
- 7:08Speaker 3: turnovers and different things that led to easy points for them.
- 7:11Speaker 3: We didn't guard the paint, you know, we turned the
- 7:13Speaker 3: ball over, you know, not even always against pressure. So
- 7:16Speaker 3: we just felt like we gave them so much in
- 7:19Speaker 3: that first game that if we didn't do that, we'd
- 7:21Speaker 3: have a great chance to win the rematch.
- 7:24Speaker 1: You know, in that first game, Dan, I'm curious what
- 7:27Speaker 1: you thought of this. Eric Rayber, Braylon Mullins, two terrific freshmen.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Those guys have had really great moments this year. That
- 7:35Speaker 1: one game though, at the guard and I felt like
- 7:37Speaker 1: they got pushed around, they got bullied a little bit.
- 7:40Speaker 1: It wasn't a great night for those two freshmen. Since that,
- 7:44Speaker 1: do you see that they've learned things and that's going
- 7:47Speaker 1: to carry them as freshmen now into these really important
- 7:50Speaker 1: crunch time games you got ahead of you.
- 7:53Speaker 3: I just think something, it's all about matchups, and you know,
- 7:57Speaker 3: it's all about styles, and John's style is tough on freshmen.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Seat the whole style is tough on freshmen. Those like
- 8:04Speaker 3: really grueling physical battles where they've really grown men trying
- 8:10Speaker 3: to bully you in the paint at the rim. So,
- 8:12Speaker 3: you know, I think it has more to do, you know,
- 8:15Speaker 3: with with that. You know, those guys have helped us,
- 8:19Speaker 3: you know, in in games versus teams that are considered,
- 8:22Speaker 3: you know, more efficient than Saint John's. I just think
- 8:26Speaker 3: that Saint John's people, like Saint John's Seaton all they
- 8:29Speaker 3: test your manhood, you know, they test your your will,
- 8:32Speaker 3: your heart as a competitor, your physical strength, and your
- 8:35Speaker 3: fortitude because they put so much pressure on you on
- 8:38Speaker 3: the backboard and uh with the way they try to
- 8:41Speaker 3: pound the ball throw you on offense.
- 8:44Speaker 2: All right.
