- 0:07The Philadelphia Phillies faced the Pittsburgh Pirates at 3 River Stadium for a Saturday afternoon game on September 30, 1978.
- 0:15The two teams were locked in a battle for the National League East title.
- 0:19The Phillies had an 11-game lead on August 13, but the Pirates then won on a 23-in-3 game tear in late August and early September to tie things up.
- 0:28Philadelphia was managed by Danny Ozark and had a 1-1.5-game lead with just two games remaining.
- 0:33The Phillies needed just one win and the next two games against the Bucks to clinch the division.
- 0:38The Pirates were the dominant team in the 1970s, reaching the playoffs in five of the first six seasons under Danny Murthog.
- 0:44Chuck Tanner took over in 1977 and continued their strength, but was only able to finish in second place.
- 0:50His audio recording is from the Pirates Radio broadcast, featuring announcers Lanny Fattari and Milo Hamilton.
- 0:57And a very pleasant good afternoon from 3 River Stadium.
- 1:01Lanny Fattari along with Milo Hamilton, we are getting set to go in this afternoon ball game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:09After the double sweep by the Pirates last night, one run decisions in each game, five to four in the first game and two in the one in the late cap on the Bucks call.
- 1:17The Bucks are back to within a game and a half for Philadelphia Phillies, hoping to cut it to a half game this afternoon and set the stage.
- 1:24Or what would have to be an extremely climactic showdown here at the stadium tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:31This afternoon, Don Robinson will go for the Bucks. He wants to become a 15 game winner in his rookie season.
- 1:37He'll go against Randy Lurks, the left hander of the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:41And I guess everybody tries to gear themselves to the final weekend of the season.
- 1:46Try to stay 100% as you can.
- 1:48Well, I'd say this comeback for the Bucks is just taking so much out of me that I don't know how much more the voice can take.

- 3:16Take a look at the starting lineup. Not too many major changes.
- 3:22First of the Phillies, Stake McRide will be leading off and playing right field against the right-hander, John Robinson.
- 3:29Larry Boll will bat in the number two spot. They're switching in short-stop.
- 3:33Gary Maddox will be hitting third and playing center field.
- 3:38Greg Luzinski will be in the number four spot for the Phillies.
- 3:42The Boll hit his 34th home run of the year in last night's second game,
- 3:46and was the only run for the Phillies as the Pirates won the game. Luzinski batting fourth this afternoon and playing left field.
- 3:52Richie Hevner will hit number five. He'll be at first base for the Phillies.
- 3:56Mike Smith will bat sixth. He'll be at third base.
- 4:01Bob Boone during the catching will bat seventh.
- 4:05Ned Seismore in the number eight spot will be at second base.
- 4:09And Randy Lurch hitting in the number nine hole and doing the fifth base.
- 4:13Once again, four to Phillies. It's McRide followed by Boone and Maddox.
- 4:17The middle third includes Luzinski, Hevner and Smith.
- 4:20And the bottom third, Boone, Seismore and Lurch.
- 4:25Down the starting lineup for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 4:28And here's how Jeff Tanner has sent them in for their sick game this afternoon.
- 4:32Frank Sinarich in his short-stop leading off.
- 4:35Frank is at four hits in the series thus far. Four hits from the double header last night.
- 4:39Omar Moreto, he had three hits in the double header last night. He'll bat second as White Center field.
- 4:44Dave Parker leading the National League in batting average of three 34.
- 4:51He'll be batting third playing right field.
- 4:54Bill Robinson in the number four spot for the Bucks. He'll be in left field.
- 4:58Willie Targo hitting number five at first base.
- 5:01Phil Garner at second base batting sixth and listening to this crowd.
- 5:05They're anticipating the arrival of the Bucks down the field. And there they go. Jeff's having their all gold uniforms this afternoon.
- 5:11Garner's sixth and playing second base. Dale Barra batting seventh at third base.
- 5:17Down the Bucks as they take the field are the recipients of a standing ovation from a sizeable crowd this afternoon.
- 5:24Still seats available. We invite you to come on out and see the Bucks in action today.
- 5:29Barra batting seventh playing third base.
- 5:31Ed Ott will do the catching in bat eighth and John Robinson batting in the number nine spot he'll do the pitching.
- 5:37So once again for the Bucks it's Barra's followed by Milano and Parker.
- 5:41The middle third includes Robinson's charge of Garner. Bill Robinson that is.
- 5:45The bottom third Barra Ott and John Robinson.
- 5:49The upfire for the fasted in ball game. Zach Davidson behind the plate. He'll make the decisions on balls and strikes.
- 5:56Ed Fargo at first base. Ball fire at second. Terry Zayde at the umpire third.
- 6:03Well Milano fortunately front-listers they won't have to sit through me for an awful long time.
- 6:08I know your adults are still in there. 100 percent. You look about five years younger to me today.
- 6:13Get caught up in this fever. It's something. It's really something.
- 6:19This standing ovation they gave this team when they went out on the field. They are ready for things to erupt here again.
- 6:25Well that's crap. Thank you the fans for their support last night.
- 6:30All right we are ready.
- 6:33Baked McBride. 266 batting average.
- 6:3810 homers. 50 runs batted in.
- 6:41Boy I tell you what a day here. Fabulous. Beautiful weather.
- 6:47The atmosphere you can cut it with an axe.
- 6:51And fake McBride who last night won two for Aiden's Robin for a run all in the first game in that RBI column.
- 6:59Could have worn the heroes mantle but instead took the go-torns when he didn't catch a fly ball in the ninth inning of the first game
- 7:07and first put spinzim around. Shin music to start it.
- 7:13McBride against Stumpf is hitting 250. Bull is on deck. Then it'll be Maddox.
- 7:19Down Robinson 21 years old.
- 7:23Into the wind and a pitcher on the way. Winging and he pops it up.
- 7:28Should be easy in the shallow center. Moreno coming a long way but he's going to be there. It was a very high fly ball in the shallow center.
- 7:37And Moreno went out. I'll see if I can get any clues to why that ball didn't carry any better.
- 7:44Gainer went out. Wind must have brought it back a little bit because Moreno ended up having to come a long way for that ball.
- 7:52Here's Larry Boggs. Laura. Size 8 collar in last night's double header. He's their leading header.
- 7:58Bowing 295 is a switch header. And a pitch.
- 8:02I had a fastball one at all. On the right side of the infield. Starchel and Gainer. On the left side. So Verus and Verus.
- 8:10Up to you left to right. Bill Robinson, Omar Moreno and Dave Parker. 1-0 pitch to Boa. Shows fun.
- 8:15Took it up high. Ball two. Head out. Who's got a double header last night. Catching here again today.
- 8:24Down Robinson and Randy Lurch. Righty against Lefty today. And here's Down Robinson 2-0 to Boa.
- 8:31And called that a ball. Looks like a pretty good pitch.
- 8:39Balling behind Boa 3-0. Onyx is on deck to the left.
- 8:46That's a strike. Make it 3-1.
- 8:51Shicks leave clouds. Day before October breaks upon it. Couldn't be better for the weather.
- 8:58And last night's excitement. Deptis Town going gaga. And why not. Two thrilling ninth inning finishes.
- 9:06Three balls and a strike to Boa. Down Robinson delivers to him. And a strike right down the middle of 3-2.
- 9:15I got a feeling that the take sign was on there. He never offered at all.
- 9:19Only tried to get him on and set a manufacture or something. Now the 3-2 pitch on the way.
- 9:25And he pops it up. Left side. Dave Verus. Sleezes it. Upside the line and it's 2-0.
- 9:35Two up and two down. Boa popping up about 15 feet behind a third base bag.
- 9:41And about 4 feet bow. Dave Verus making the easy play. And here is Hunterfielder Gary Maddox.
- 9:47Who chips in with a couple of errors last night.
- 9:51Maddox is hitting 284. Leads them in doubles with 34. He has 11 home runs and 67 rebies.
- 9:58And he leads them in stolen bases with 33.
- 10:03And he's the first last night won for 7. The pitch. Long on line drive. Fingal, Setterfield.
- 10:08Hanks on a rope. As Moina plays it on the first bounce. Though the first hit of the game belongs to Gary Maddox.
- 10:15And it brings up Cevul. Greg Luzinski.
- 10:19Hit a home run up into the lower club level last night up above the left field for millions.
- 10:24He's as strong as Muscle Dev Muscle.
- 10:32Luzinski as he steps in. Does so with a 261 batting average.
- 10:36He leads them in homers with 34. He has 98 runs batted in.
- 10:40He has 6 of those 34 homers against the pirates.
- 10:46Ah, waiting. Seems to be some problem out in the center. I'm not quite sure.
- 10:54I think they want a fanner taken down because it's white against the green background.
- 10:58That's the hitter's background. From about each end of the big gigantic scoreboard is fine.
- 11:04But other than that those banners just came out and hung up there. It's fair to vote 12.
- 11:09Go to first base. Not close. Remember they're leading base. Maddox is on. He has 33-th.
- 11:17Darko trying to hold him close. Luzinski waiting. Another throw to first base. The runner's back.
- 11:24Still no count to Luzinski. The underkitter Richie Hebner.
- 11:30First inning. Two outs, one off.
- 11:34Robinson throws the first but he got back. Hey, that was close. Good strong quick throw.
- 11:40Darko put it down. Maddox has just put the fingertips on the bag ahead of the tag.
- 11:48The second inning. Looking over the shoulder. Don Robinson hesitates. One are going. Swinging fouled off out of play.
- 11:54Over in the seats on the right side.
- 12:01So we've come down to this. The final weekend. We're a game and a half apart with two games left for the Phillies.
- 12:10Hopefully three games left for the Bucs.
- 12:14And they've got to win every one of them. No balls and one strike. The pirates coming in with 24 straight wins. Here are three rivers.
- 12:22Now, Don Robinson looking down into the reeds of fans. Maddox has been going on the pre-sitting pitch.
- 12:27He goes right back to a pretty good lead. He's got that front foot out on the edge of the carpet.
- 12:31Robbie Chases it back. Doesn't get him. No balls. One strike. The Greg Luzinski. Two for seven in the series.
- 12:38One to take measure home run last night. And now Danny Ozark coming out. Asking the play-dump fire about something.
- 12:46He might be wondering if Robins' move to first base is legal. But I've got to think also this is a bit of gamesmanship too.
- 12:54They know they've got a young 21-year-old right-hander on the mound. The big game. And they figure, look, let's make them think maybe he is to do something wrong.
- 13:01But, Tony Taylor carrying the same case to the first base on fire, pole prior. And I think you're right.
- 13:10He's faced them four times already this year and we didn't have any squawks about it. There's a throw over. Just a little bit of mental warfare going on here.
- 13:20Now, Danny Ozark is complaining to Ed Vargo. And they're going to warn Danny Ozark now.
- 13:28We're in charge of the game and we will handle the game.
- 13:32I think Ozark is questioning the placement of Don Robinson's front foot. He's claiming that Robinson is pivoting off the heel of his front foot and not stepping to first base.
- 13:43But I think it's a strike job.
- 13:45And Chuck Tanner now going to come out. And he's going to try to work on the other end. He's going to try to settle down. Don't pay any attention to him.
- 13:53And now Tanner is leading with Ed Vargo. Let's either tell him what it is and get on with this ball game.
- 14:02Ed Vargo stops on his way back. He's had a work or two. Chuck Tanner out there to stand up for his ball club and the fans like it.
- 14:19He's got a no ball one strike count on Greg Luzinski.
- 14:24And the mental aspect of this game is everything. You don't want him thinking about that and then make a mistake and hang a break and roll to this big guy. He can powder you.
- 14:35He hit him on the fist and popped him into shallow center. The ball is going to drop. They'll have runners at first and third.
- 14:42And that Robinson could not have made a better pitch. He practically started the bat off in Luzinski's hands. But he is so strong he was able to get a pop fly single into shallow center.
- 14:52Omar came on thought he might have a play but then realized he did not. He held up and played it safe. And it's a wise thing there. The ball was dropping too quickly.
- 15:02Richie Hevner will be the batter. Last night 0-4-8. So after 2 away, 2 singles.
- 15:08Hevner will have a 2-81 batting average when he steps in. 17 homers for the former player. And then 67 runs batted in.
- 15:18He's hitting a hefty 4-17 against his old teammate.
- 15:23Only for 0-48 with a homer and 8 runs batted in against the buck. And he's batting with runners on the corners and two down.
- 15:30Don Robinson stretching. Checking runners third and first. Pitch to Hevner. Back ball goes outside. One ball and no strikes.
- 15:38A press box with his jammed backs again. A tribute to this game considering the backs of college football all around us.
- 15:47High school football games as well. But the media realizes the importance of this weekend. And they are here in abundant numbers.
- 15:55Hevner the batter. Team mates on the corners. Two down as Don Robinson. The right-hander stretches. He looks and delivers.
- 16:02Swinging in a slight fair down the right side. It'll score one. Marker over to get it. And the runners will be a second and third.
- 16:11It's an RBI single for Hevner. Now it'll be a double.
- 16:18Maddox scored. Lazinski gets the third. Hevner with an RBI double and the Phillies go first blood here.
- 16:30It will just it. Get inside the first base bag.
- 16:37Gargillin out. I'm talking to Don Robinson.
- 16:46Hevner the batter. The batter will be the third base. Mike Smith.
- 16:57Mike Smith as he backs for Philadelphia. Will have a batting average of 253. 21 homers and 77 runs matted in.
- 17:05Last night got a hit in each game. Won two for six in the double header. And he's batting now with Ozynski a third and Hevner at first.
- 17:14Don Robinson will go to the full wind-up on Smith. Winging in a good hard slider on the inside corner.
- 17:21Three straight hits after two away. Putting the Phillies in business and they've scored one run.
- 17:28Important spot here to get Smith. The unduck hitters the catcher Bob Boone.
- 17:34They can look at the runners. Now delivers to Smith. Up and in. Two tight with a fast ball. One ball. One strike.
- 17:42So Mike Smith. One of the glamour boys of the National League. One ball and one strike.
- 17:53Don Robinson quickly to the line in the pitch on the way. High inside again. Two balls and one strike.
- 18:01One of the things they wanted to guard against against Don Robinson here today. The last time he faced Phillies, in Phillies, on the 11th of September,
- 18:09he was over throwing. He was tighter than a drum and he was over muckling the ball. Here's the two-one-fifth.
- 18:16Winging in a line drive through Robinson and left and Bill Hazard side-refired.
- 18:23Smith lines out to the left fielder Bill Robinson. The Phillies have to settle for one run. On three hits.
- 18:29Hevner drove in Maddox. There weren't any errors and two Phillies were left.
- 18:33We played a half an inning in another must situation for the Pirates. After the first half inning, the Phillies won one on three hits.
- 18:41The Pirates are just now coming into back. Randy Lertz, the left-handed for Danny Ozarks Phillies, has completed the warm-up passes.
- 18:49He's 10-8. He R.A. 387 against the Pirates. He's one-and-one. He beat us two-to-one on the 31st of May in Phillies.
- 18:58Also in Phillies on the 12th of August, we beat him 10-to-one. And now Frank Tveras, with a good night last night,
- 19:05four parades in the twin-bills with the buck-o-slip, comes in hitting two 79s. 38 runs batted in, 46 stolen bases.
- 19:14And we'll be leading it off trying to start something to get that run back.
- 19:18Tveras will be followed by Moreno and Markzler. The left-hander Lertz delivers the Tveras and it's low inside of all.
- 19:25Lertz's battery made his bomb-bow. McBurk's face when Hempner buys more in seconds.
- 19:30Shortstop, Bola, Schmidt at third. Here's the one-oh to Franky. They bounce through here short. Convenient, Hempner.
- 19:36Good strong call. Gotti made it close though. Franky huts one down that line. And it's one-away.
- 19:42Short's at first, Bola to Hempner. Their outfields, standards were zinky-left, Mattick, Stetter and McBride in right.
- 19:49Pirate coaches in place. They want business in a hurry. Almond second first. Jolin at third.
- 19:55Omar Moreno just now leaving the on-deck circle. Last night he was free for seven and drove in a run.
- 20:01Moreno batting 234. Two homers. 31 runs batted in. 69 stolen bases.
- 20:10Sometime today or tomorrow he could tie and break the club record set last year by Tveras at 70.
- 20:17Facing the left-hander, Randy Lurch. And Parker has moved on deck. Here's the pitch.
- 20:25Low inside, ball one.
- 20:31Left-hander coming back quickly. And that is a strike. Put the plate into it with an ease. And the count is even at one-on-one.
- 20:45Lurch working in the first. He's got a one-to-nothing lead. Here's the pitch. Breaking ball down and out. Two balls. One strike.
- 20:58Omar Moreno left-hand batter against the left-hand. Deliveries of Lurch.
- 21:02Playing in a high foul down the left side. Luzinski coming over. And he won't be able to get it to the first couple of rows in the lower boxes.
- 21:11An interesting note and quite a tribute to a young man from Washington, Pennsylvania.
- 21:16If you fan for the radio to see that pink tennis sign out of the wall and right center looks a little cleaner today, it's because it's brand new.
- 21:24Howie Millick, a young man from Washington, made the other one. Last night some fans with less than common sense took it away from him and tore it to bits.
- 21:33He stayed up all night making a new one to replace it. Nice going, Howie Millick. Make tenets. Make tenets.
- 21:46Here's the two-to-fits. And a breaking pitch with something off too close to the letters. Three balls. Two strikes.
- 21:55Well that is dedication. Howie is down to, excuse me, Howie is down to New York recently on that J. Sadian trip that brought the pen and log.
- 22:04All right, a payoff pitch to Moreno. Down and out he walks it. Walks to Moreno. Now he gets the leading base-sealer on.
- 22:16And when the Cobra comes out, this crowd will be ready for some action. The league's leading header is ready to step to the plate.
- 22:33A lot of the folks standing in tribute to Parker as he's on his way to his second straight batting title. Comes in today hitting 3-34.
- 22:41Last night another goal for himself that he reached. A hundred-one scored. Here's the pitch to him.
- 22:48Swinging it about there. He blew the right side of his hip. Omar Moreno will take a turn but he won't come to third.
- 22:54The ball with his two-to-fits. And the Parker continues to be as hot as a deep low stone after a walk of singles.
- 23:05A hundred and ninety-three hits. He's still got a shot of 200, you know that?
- 23:12And his batting average is 3-35. And it's just 20 of hit of the year against the Phillies.
- 23:21I had the Cobra put on that football face pass to guard that broken cheekbone. And here is Bill Robinson. Bill hitting 2-43. 14 homers. 79 runs batted in.
- 23:36Last night did not get a hit on the double header. He wants to do more than that today.
- 23:41The ball, shallow center, left in base, hits. The bases are going to be loaded. They could not afford to bring Moreno on because you cannot get doubled up in that situation.
- 23:53Radick's coming on and he can really cover some ground. The bases will be loaded for Willie Sargell.
- 24:00The pirates are trying to get the run back in a hurry. A walk and two straight hits. And the captain of the Buck Nose is going to be stepping in.
- 24:10One of last night's heroes when he hit a three-run homer in the first game.
- 24:17The club's starting to get up all the way around again. They're going to salute Willie Sargell this time.
- 24:24What a popular figure he is in this great city. Captain Willie Sargell of the pirates.
- 24:31And another ovation for Sargell. 2-94 batting average. 27 homers. 93 runs batted in.
- 24:39Left hand pitcher against the left hand batter. And here's a pitch to Sargell.
- 24:43He swings and he misses. He was going for a grand slam with that cut. But he left that bat fly.
- 24:49Like one to Captain Willie. He's had four hits this year against the Phillies. Three of the four have been out of the park.
- 24:59Lurch winding. Hicks to Sargell. Followed off up to the left side out of play.
- 25:05And Lurch is out in front of the captain. 0-2. They got Brewster warming up in the bullseye.
- 25:11Brewster who last night walked in the winning run in the ninth inning of the second game.
- 25:16A pirate on every base with one out. Sargell trying to deliver.
- 25:20Billy's leading one to nothing opening innings. Winging. A high drive.
- 25:24Seat's better. Hicks back. Will get it. Grand slam. Grand slam. Grand slam.
- 25:32Woo!
- 26:02Oh, it ain't Toledo. How about that? Will catch Willie with Willie.
- 26:15Giner shows butch. Like a high outside of all.
- 26:19Graham. Graham Sargell. 28 homers. 97 RBIs. Come back of the air. Give him the trophy today.
- 26:32Here's the butch to Giner. High outside. Ball. 2.
- 26:481. Maria Grand slam. There's Ball 3.
- 26:52Let's see if he ever hit one against the Phillies.
- 26:58Running to the first guide up would be Captain Willie's first slam against the Phillies.
- 27:03Ball forward to Giner. The Butchers are coming for La Trolla.
- 27:15Gray Ripplemeyer, the pitching coach is on the way.
- 27:21Captain Willie Sargell had a grand slam home run over the Butterfield Wagon gate.
- 27:27Knappick duck with it about 20 feet of the wall and said, RR is stuck.
- 27:36It was close enough to use, I'll say that.
- 27:43All right, they've had their conference.
- 27:48They didn't go to get him.
- 27:53They just want to talk to him.
- 27:55Rooster continues to warm up in the bullpen.
- 27:57It's 4-1, Pirate.
- 28:01Here is Dale Barra.
- 28:03The stretch sticks to him and the strike call on the inside corner.
- 28:10This ground is still in a scissor over Willie Sargell.
- 28:16Get a towering home run for Grand Slam.
- 28:19Go to first, not in time on Geiner.
- 28:22Geiner, who was honored before the game,
- 28:25receiving his watch from president of the league,
- 28:28Jeff Beanie, for being co-player of the week with Parker.
- 28:31There's a slow roller up the third-bass side foul,
- 28:34and it's 0-2.
- 28:37No balls and two strikes.
- 28:39We've got a runner at first base, Phil Geiner.
- 28:42Dale Barra is the hitter with 0-2.
- 28:44The on-deck hitter is the catcher at half.
- 28:50And the can of let's go buck, wing through three rivers.
- 28:54Let him hear it on a pitch stadium.
- 28:57There's a ball high and outside.
- 29:00Let him know there's another game in town.
- 29:03Base ball is still very much with us there.
- 29:08I have to take anything away from the Panthers.
- 29:10I hope they win 50-0.
- 29:12Here's the pitch, swinging in a looping pop out into shallow
- 29:16right behind the second baseman, Pryce Moore grabs it.
- 29:19But it started out and looked like it had a chance to drop behind him.
- 29:22But it was a dying clay, it was a turned off.
- 29:25That makes it two away and brings up Eddard.
- 29:28The first one goes in last night's first game.
- 29:354-1 on Stardale's Grand Slam.
- 29:43Left hand pitcher, left hand batter.
- 29:46The pitch. Big breaking ball, low outside.
- 29:54He's got seven Grand Slams this year compared to only four all last year.
- 30:00There's a high pop foul out of play over to the left side.
- 30:03Bill Robinson against the Cubs, centered against Montreal, Milner against New York,
- 30:08Milner against Chicago, Garner against the Cardinals, Garner against Montreal,
- 30:14and today he's Darkle against the Phillies.
- 30:19The first not in time. So it's been a Grand Slam year,
- 30:25and there's one thing that'll really make it a Grand Slam,
- 30:28win today, win tomorrow.
- 30:30Runner going, swinging a miss, throw down, too high, so in base.
- 30:36Garner, still second, is 27th of the year.
- 30:40Boone hustled up when his throw-in was too high.
- 30:44He's got 207 for the Cubs.
- 30:49So there's a duck on the pond for Red Hat.
- 30:58One ball with two strikes. Here's the fifth.
- 31:02There's a fly ball out of the right center, but Maddox coming across is going to be there.
- 31:06He can cover some ground, I want to tell you.
- 31:10He's into the fans, saluting the box, and especially Willie Darkle.
- 31:29Willie tips his cap to a standing ovation. We played one inning.
- 31:33It's the Pirates Four and the Phillies one.
- 31:36I said this crowd was one of the erupts about 10 minutes ago.
- 31:40I didn't know how ready they were.
- 31:43I should say, for less time, you'll have it.
- 31:46He now has 11 Grand Plans.
- 31:51Ralph Kainer had 12, Rogers Hornby 12, Ernie Banks 12, Gill Hodge is 14, Aaron 16.
- 32:02Kainer's been the only side of the year as the all-time leader in this league with 18.
- 32:06Here is the pitch to Boone, and a spike is called for underway in the second inning.
- 32:14The bottom third of the order, Boone, Sismore, and maybe Lurch.
- 32:18Boone, right-hand batter, good receiver, and having a good year with the bats.
- 32:24Hitting 281. There's a line drive and a left field for a base hit.
- 32:28Robinson over quickly to play it to keep it from going to the corner.
- 32:31It's a lead-off single for Boone. He had a 3-2 pitch.
- 32:34The line drive, there, leaped as high as he could, but it was still about five feet over him.
- 32:39So, that is hit number four for the visiting Phillies.
- 32:43Put the runner on with nobody out and brings up Ted Sismore.
- 32:47Sismore hitting 221. No homers, 24 runs batted in.
- 32:51In last night's double header, the Phillies' second baseman went 0 for 7.
- 33:02Head-out when I have to have a little chat with John Robinson.
- 33:04Coming back in behind home plate, Randy Lurch, who served up the grand slam the schedule, is on deck.
- 33:15John Robinson stretching.
- 33:18Looks back over the shoulder, delivers. High inside of all, and it's 1-0.
- 33:25And now Larry Sherry is going to call time to pitch in coach.
- 33:29He wants to have a word with his vise-cubal.
- 33:32Larry Sherry, make no bones about it.
- 33:36Pushed down Robinson from practically the first wing of the week of spring training on that he was good enough to make this glove.
- 33:44And the youngster responded to that treatment and he pitched his way onto the staff.
- 33:49And here he is with a chance to win the biggest game of his young career and take another notch in that rookie of the year award balloting.
- 33:56And Larry Sherry knows something about being a good rookie pitcher.
- 33:59He was a good one with a Dodgers, no doubt about it.
- 34:03They're a little alike too, you know that?
- 34:06Yes they are.
- 34:08One ball, no strike, pitch on the way.
- 34:11Strike with a slider, one ball, one strike.
- 34:20A ball and a strike as Boone leads off his first.
- 34:24John Robinson tells staffs the letters, hesitates there, checks the runner again, one-one decides more.
- 34:31Strike cold, outside corner to knees.
- 34:34And no draw back at all, no thought ever of pitching anybody else in this game.
- 34:45When you've come this far the old saying, dance with him who'll bring you and John Robinson helps get us here.
- 34:52One ball and two strikes.
- 34:55The stretch and the pitch, swinging high bouncer to Baratheon, he'll flip to Geiner, one-fire to first, double player.
- 35:06And I'm going to tell you something, that was not a double play ball.
- 35:11That was a very high chop.
- 35:14In most cases you'd have been satisfied with a force on that.
- 35:17But Geiner at almost anticipation of thinking that.
- 35:21Never had the ball in his gloves, a little reflection on Mayas right there of the old pirate fans will excuse me.
- 35:28Comparison, but that's what he had to do in order to do it.
- 35:31And to verify the fine job, aggressively charging the ball.
- 35:35It is a 6-4-3 double play and the pirates have made their 129th double play of the year and here is Randy Lurtz.
- 35:43Not in 2-24, he's had one homer driven in 7 runs.
- 35:46Sends a high fly ball to deep right center, for ain't no back, he'll never get it, it's gone.
- 35:52And John Robinson kicking the mound, he'd likely be kicking himself in the seat of the pants.
- 35:59As Randy Lurtz hits the home run of his own, it's his second of the year.
- 36:06He hit it over the deep right center field fence and that makes it 4-2.
- 36:20It's his second lifetime and they both come this year.
- 36:31Here's Bake McBride, flying to center in the first inning to start the game.
- 36:36Hits John away, fly ball, left center, Marino in track of it, he's right there, side retired.
- 36:46McBride out on a fly ball to fairly deep left center.
- 36:49One run on two hits, broke out in a strange place like last night with Flugger Keeson.
- 36:55And Lurtz homer has scored a run, no errors and nobody left.
- 36:58We've played an inning and a half, it's the Pirate 4, the Phillies 2.
- 37:04Randy Lurtz, you homer to get himself back within 2, is ready to work in the bottom of the second.
- 37:09And he'll be doing it against John Robinson, who has been our best hitting pitcher as far as number of hits.
- 37:18As a rookie he has collected 19 hits.
- 37:25And he's going to lead it off in the bottom of the second inning.
- 37:42The 11 grand slams for Starchel Ties, Kiner's mark has a pirate.
- 37:48I mentioned earlier that Kiner had 12, so he had the other one either as a cub or an indian.
- 37:53And he's going to hit it with a cup.
- 37:55And a miss and a strike two on John Robinson.
- 38:02And he had it with a cup.
- 38:06Here's the 0-2 pitch, swinging a high bounce right side, Seismore going to wait for it to come down,
- 38:11and then Seismore throws and it's one away. Seismore handled it, high chopper well, had to have patience on that, Seismore did, throws out John Robinson, and it brings up Frank Tavares.
- 38:23Pirates are leading 4-2 in the strength of a Willie Starchel Grand Slam in the opening, and we're now in the bottom of the second frame.
- 38:33Tavares in the first inning, bounce to the shortstop Boa.
- 38:41And Lurch has pitched to him as down low, one ball, no strikes.
- 38:47Nobody on but H, one away.
- 38:50No, he's about hit the Bucks 5-3 with the Pirates lead in the score and a strike call to the inside corner.
- 38:56One and one to the Pirate shortstop Frank Tavares with Omar Moreno on deck.
- 39:02One ball, one strike, Lurch kicks and fires.
- 39:05A bouncer right outside Seismore, convenient big hop, throws on to hip there and it's two away.
- 39:12Two plays, second to first, getting down Robinson and Frank Tavares, and now it will bring up centerfielder Omar Moreno,
- 39:19who started the upsurge in the first with a walk.
- 39:22Marker followed with a single through the right side, Bill Robinson got a single, and then Starchel unloaded over the centerfield fence with his Grand Slam.
- 39:31Here's Omar.
- 39:42Moreno facing the left-hander Randy Lurch.
- 39:48Moreno hitting 2-36 as he stands in, here's the pitch to him.
- 39:51There's a foul, left here to the left, going to give those fans another shot, and they catch this one.
- 39:56Same booth that they had trouble in before, but this one,
- 40:00what do you think the averages are on that?
- 40:03Now that happened in twice in one day, and giving them another shot.
- 40:09They'll never forget it, the excitement of the weekend and catching a foul ball in a clumb level booth.
- 40:15A strike call on the outside corner, Lurch has Moreno in a hole 0-2.
- 40:25Moreno stepping back a moment.
- 40:27Now as he is ready, Brohne drops the fingers for Lurch.
- 40:30Shakes off one, now he's ready.
- 40:32Here's the 0-2 pitch, big breaking pitch with something off of it, goes outside, one ball, two strikes.
- 40:39Omar laid off of that one.
- 40:42Something he's done a much better job on in the last two months.
- 40:46One-two pitch, strike three calls, another tablizing curve, but this one comes with strike zone.
- 40:53Omar caught looking, first strike out for Lurch, after a shaky first inning, Lurch comes back with a three up three down second.
- 41:01So we play two innings, Mino Hamilton in.
- 41:05Lanny Fratelli is always with the story, as we go to the third, it'll be Pittsburgh 4, Philadelphia 2.
- 41:12Getting ready to go to the third inning with the pirates on top and a four to two game over Philadelphia.
- 41:17We're right at the top of the hour, let's flood all of our stations around the tri-state,
- 41:21and we'll find themselves right here on the pirates baseball network.
- 41:26This is your pirate network for Keystone Country WFBGFM, Altona.
- 41:32The time is one minute after three o'clock.
- 41:39Larry Boa, who pops up in the first inning to Vera, will lead off to third for the Philly.
- 41:44He steps in and so does Lanny.
- 41:46Larry Boa is off for one, he pops up to third base for Vera in the first inning.
- 41:51Get in with a two 94 batting average, three home runs, 43 runs, batted in.
- 41:57Larry's in front four to two in the third, Don Robinson pitch,
- 42:00Boa is playing some files back on the screen, Boa, Maddox and Luzovsky in the third.
- 42:09Luzoley's pretty much going with the same lineup at all three games, the exception in the second game last night, they
- 42:14lose McCarver behind to play with Carlson on the mound.
- 42:19Robinson drill one pitch, flying out and pops up,
- 42:23down the right field, Garner out, Parker in, and Dave Parker will take Gards one away.
- 42:30Fly ball in the down the right field, Boa flying out, leading off the third,
- 42:37bring up center fader Gary Maddox, Maddox had the first of three straight singles after two out in the first inning,
- 42:46and score the opening front and out of the arrest, four or two,
- 42:49pilots are leading, we're in the top of the third.
- 42:56Maddox right-handed batter, and Don Robinson delivers the first pitch,
- 43:01Garner out and fouled back on the screen, Maddox hitting 286.
- 43:16Boa, what a gorgeous afternoon, this is just beautiful.
- 43:20Here's the old one pitch, Dave shot back to the block just by the club of Robinson out of the center field,
- 43:27and the new from Maddox, that's at number six for some of the outfields.
- 43:31Pirates are leading four to two on Willie Sargill's first inning grand slam,
- 43:36and that'll bring out left fader Greg Lozinski for the Phillies, he had a base hit to center field in the first inning.
- 43:45Robinson picks up a play, it's flying out and pops foul on a play on the right side, it's like one.
- 43:52The first one out, Robinson comes to the set, long hesitation, one strike,
- 43:58pitches, foul back, it just stares, one ball, no balls and two strikes.
- 44:04Top of the third, pirates leading four to two, Willie Sargill with a first inning grand slam.
- 44:13Those two pitch, rockin' out.
- 44:18Blackout number one for John Robinson, here's a pick inside and hit, hit batsman, caught him in the right arm.
- 44:28That is the first free pass issued in the ball game, John Robinson gives the hit batsman to Kevner,
- 44:36on him during the right arm.
- 44:39Pirates are leading four to two, Willie's got single runs in the first and second innings.
- 44:47Willie Sargill had the grand slam home run for the bucks from the bottom of the first.
- 44:55Mike Smith sets the inning line down to left fader Bill Robinson in the first.
- 45:09Smith right handed batters, friendly close to him. John Robinson delivers, checks wing,
- 45:17ground ball five of them out, second base when Garner has it closed,
- 45:20the Sargill's Smith is out, fillin' the filly.
- 45:25Go around one hit, a hit batsman, two men left on, after two and a half innings of play,
- 45:30three river stadiums, inside buckles, four and son of Nell Fiat two.
- 45:37Getting ready for the bottom of the third, the Loviner, the box for the fillies,
- 45:40again tomorrow afternoon here at the stadium, a 135 game and there are still seats available for tomorrow,
- 45:45Friday and we'll be telling you more about the second availability as we go throughout the broadcast
- 45:50and we even hope to have an update on the second situation on our post game show.
- 45:58So we'll have a final award as we can give you on the second availability tomorrow,
- 46:03the second's available. Right ready for the bottom of the third, Dave Parker steps again,
- 46:09I guess Randy Lerch, Parker with a base hit to right field of the first,
- 46:15and he was one of the three men on board with the Grand Slam.
- 46:22Parker batting 335, Lerch delivers, Parker swings and they bob all outside the third base bag.
- 46:32Parker batting 3rd this afternoon, so Robinson in the clean up spot has been
- 46:45standard lately for the box against West Ended Citrus, Robinson bats fourth,
- 46:49again right in the end of Citrus, still moves down six and Sargele bats fourth,
- 46:54and Parker swings and golfs and foul. Either they box feet, gets back out again, no balls, two strikes.
- 47:14Randy Lerch, pumping up with an O2 pitch, off speed, breaking fifth second out,
- 47:20and he's tied to hold up, but that's David who brings him up, and that is strikeout number two for Randy Lerch.
- 47:27One away in the third, that is left field of Bill Robinson, Bill singles two,
- 47:34then a field of the first.
- 47:46Pirate fourth, Billy Sue, bottom of the third, Lerch delivers a strike.
- 48:00Oh one pitch, long on and miss, and a field ball, two strikes.
- 48:09One back, O2 pitch, long on and miss, field ball up high, and he'll face the bats,
- 48:17hit, struck him out, that's three strikes, Lerch. Here's Willie Sargele with the grand slam of the first inning,
- 48:23and this header into the box, just so many here, the Super Sider in Pittsburgh,
- 48:28receiving a standing ovation from the crowd here this afternoon.
- 48:35Sargele, the grand slam of the first inning, his 11th career grand slam, steps in,
- 48:40swings and misses, and a good rip, five-steps at strike one.
- 48:45Willie batting 296, 28 home runs this year, 97 runs batted in.
- 48:54Tech swing, tap the right side, second base with Stilesmore,
- 48:57trying to get hands and clips down to have Sargele's half the box to reset,
- 49:00and then one, two, three in the third, and after three innings of play,
- 49:05that's half the new action from three river stadiums, Pittsburgh,
- 49:08and the Philadelphia Phillies too.
- 49:10I think a lot of the wives, everybody associated with the box,
- 49:13a lot of fans, not much sleep last night, a lot of anxious moments,
- 49:18a lot of people just wanted to sit up all night long last night and talk about the double-header victory.
- 49:23And we're ready for number four, how much pressure do you get last night, my lord, do you get enough?
- 49:27Well, I got to about three, we'll come about every hour on the hour,
- 49:31replaying the finishes, and it was quite a night, and the fuck those deserved it, they really battled them.
- 49:39Well, it's quite a day, let's get number four.
- 49:42All right, we're ready with Boone stepping in, he had a base set in the second inning,
- 49:45he let off, and then was erased in a size more about 1,000,
- 49:48and it sounded a double play, and he's up there now one for one against John Rubin,
- 49:52from the Pirates are leading 4-2, and the first pitch went across the letters on the inside corners.
- 49:57No balls in one strike.
- 50:02John Robinson, kick-shiny brings it, off the, bounces short, great big hop,
- 50:07Tavares, grass, throws, got him, and it's Walle.
- 50:11Lang Tavares, throws out Bob Boone to start the four-binning.
- 50:15That'll bring up second baseman's size more.
- 50:20Well, we've had an example of Buck Tower here today with a grand slam by the captain.
- 50:27We get some more on that mound with a hard-strolling right-hander, John Robinson,
- 50:31and the Buck Brigade, and Buck Tower, and head-out banners, peek through.
- 50:37The Geiner banners, all the ones out in the right field, there's one of those flattened affilies.
- 50:42You know what you should have done with that flatten, you should have felt flattened, P-H.
- 50:49There's a line drive to center, Marlene O'Han, about five steps, and it's two down.
- 50:57Landy Lurch has been up once, and there was a big one for him.
- 51:00He's a home run over the deep right-center field fence.
- 51:05North Carolina, the last we heard, was leading the panthers three to nothing.
- 51:11Here's the fence, at the outside of Walle.
- 51:15One and all to count, as Lurch fasts with nobody on in front of him and two away.
- 51:19McBride would be an excellent forefitting, John Robinson working with a two-run lead.
- 51:24Back him out of there, two balls, no strike.
- 51:33Lurch just stepped down a moment.
- 51:36Now he's ready and throws Robinson.
- 51:38And there's a strike right down the middle to make it two and one.
- 51:41Tomorrow it'll be the Candyman, if that one's on the line, that was just the way the panthers predicted it.
- 51:47If it comes to the game we need, the Candyman will be there. Here's the two ones.
- 51:52And there's a drive into right field again.
- 51:54Parker at the wall, and it's gone.
- 51:59Another home run for Landy Lurch.
- 52:03He's doing it all himself.
- 52:06And he's sprinting around the bases, he doesn't bother with a home run strike.
- 52:11And it's four to three.
- 52:13Now it's getting serious.
- 52:20That'll bring up Bate McBride, who's about to place on five balls to center.
- 52:24A home run over the right field, and Parker went back.
- 52:28But then at the very last second as he got to the wall, realized it was over him and gone.
- 52:33And it is four to three.
- 52:36Randy Lurch says that two solo homers.
- 52:41Don Robinson's going to shut the door.
- 52:45Here's the thing, swinging in a high foul, out of play over to the left side.
- 52:51The rookie right-hander has now thrown 20 home run balls, and two today to the opposing pitcher.
- 52:57That was not in the game plan.
- 53:00He's got two goals in one strike.
- 53:04It's to McBride, ball one and one, lower two up next.
- 53:09The leads have out hit, the pirates seven to three, the pirates still clinging to a lead in a four to three game.
- 53:15The Willie Sargeau Grand Slam is the only thing holding up right now,
- 53:21and that's the difference in this four to three pirate lead.
- 53:25Here's the one-one.
- 53:27That's the third base flight. Bear in. Bear in. Won't be able to play it.
- 53:31It'll be a base hit.
- 53:34McBride with the element of surprise, and just tapping at that ball and putting some back spin on it.
- 53:41And that is hit number eight.
- 53:44And that will bring up Larry Bola over two. He's over ten in the series.
- 53:50Bola switch interbounding left-handed against the right-hander, Don Robinson,
- 53:58who's made two mistakes on his mound upon at work.
- 54:03And right now McBride, a scripty, is at first base.
- 54:08Got to watch him closely.
- 54:10Robinson stretches, looks back, throws over, does not get out.
- 54:14Boy, it was close. Good, strong throw right on target. McBride just did make it back in.
- 54:22Pirates leading four to three, top of the fourth inning.
- 54:26Bucks got bears in a cluster.
- 54:28Bill just scored one in the first, one in the second, one in the fourth.
- 54:32Robinson from the stretch, and here comes the ball.
- 54:37Bounce foul right side past Tony Taylor, the first base coach.
- 54:41No balls, one strike.
- 54:44Mamek would be next.
- 54:46After two away, Lurch-Homard.
- 54:49Then that was followed by a Bunt single by McBride.
- 54:51It was McBride first hit today and his third in the series.
- 54:56No balls, one strike, Bola waiting.
- 54:58Trying to give him by head-off.
- 55:00Don Robinson takes a peek over the shoulder, not stretching yet.
- 55:04Now he does.
- 55:06McBride with his lead. He's not going.
- 55:09Swung on, fly ball, right field, park her over near the line, comes in and has it.
- 55:14And the inning is over.
- 55:16But the Phillies get on the board again.
- 55:19A home run by Lurch.
- 55:21There were a couple of this.
- 55:23One of the errors, one man left.
- 55:25It's tightened up from the buck-o-backs who've got to start battling again.
- 55:30After three and a half, Pirates four, Phillies three.
- 55:33Remember tomorrow's big prize day.
- 55:37Hundreds of you fans will win great prizes worth thousands of dollars.
- 55:41You just might win a brand new car, a trip to Mexico or one of the other fabulous prizes.
- 55:45That's tomorrow.
- 55:47The big prize for fans, bearer.
- 55:49Certainly an evidence the big prize might be a flag for the buck.
- 55:53That's tomorrow at 1.35.
- 55:55Pirate prize day.
- 55:58Giner walks in the first inning in Stilivay, swinging a miss.
- 56:02You know you can buy your tickets or register without obligation with any Pirates or Murphy's ticket outlet.
- 56:08Winners will be confirmed by mail or phone.
- 56:11Bill Giner, looking for his first hit in the series, fouled it off up to the right and he's in a hole 0-2.
- 56:18Giner will be followed by Bearer.
- 56:20He's already on deck.
- 56:21Then it'll be head-up.
- 56:22Pirates are batting into fourth inning.
- 56:24They had a 4-1 lead at one time.
- 56:26Now it is 4-3.
- 56:28Randy Lurch has taken things into his own hands as it were, a bat and hit-to-home run.
- 56:35Leo Cupid.
- 56:37High ball.
- 56:391-2.
- 56:47Lurch getting the sign.
- 56:49Giner waiting 1-2-5.
- 56:51A bouncer third, convenient big hop for a charging smith.
- 56:54That throws on to first. Hey, that was close.
- 56:59Giner hustled down that line and made him get it there.
- 57:02Nobody will be disappointed in seeing somebody run down a base bat like that.
- 57:06That was a very close play as it turned out.
- 57:09That throws out Giner, one down to the fourth, brings up third baseman Dale Bearer.
- 57:15Bearer popped up to size more the second baseman in the opening inning.
- 57:20Gargles Grand Slam has the pirates in front, 4-3.
- 57:24It's DeBara and he'll face in a Tomahawk job, a pit that was up.
- 57:30And a line drive single to center for Dale Bearer, his first hit of the series.
- 57:36That is hit number four for the pirates in the game.
- 57:39The Phillies have doubled the hit, calamates the four on it.
- 57:42And now here is Eddott who's flying out to the center fielder in the opening inning.
- 57:49Eddott facing Randy Lurtz, down Robinson to up next.
- 57:56The crowd would like to see the more bucko bats explode here.
- 58:01He's gotten down to a one run difference.
- 58:04Now the stretch in the looks of first, here's the fifth.
- 58:07He's trying to go after a slow curve and let it go by.
- 58:11Bob Boone wants an appeal, the plate umpire does.
- 58:14Certainly some pirates just know he did not go after it, it's a ball.
- 58:21Want to know who the Eddott is.
- 58:25Looked at DeBara, here's the fifth.
- 58:27Breaking fifth high, two balls, no strikes.
- 58:31The crowd trying to get things going again.
- 58:34Trying to be a disruptive force against the Phillies.
- 58:37I'll tell you one thing, it helped last night, you could tell this crowd was with them.
- 58:42Two balls and no strikes, now the sort of first you got to pick off going.
- 58:46Throw down to the shortstop and they'll tag him out.
- 58:48That is a one three sixth.
- 58:54Good move that time by Lurtz.
- 58:58DeBara had no place to go but keep on going hoping that Hefner would throw it wide
- 59:02if Ola but he didn't do it, it's a one three sixth.
- 59:05And now with nobody on and two away.
- 59:09Here's the pitch to Eddott.
- 59:11And that is a ball.
- 59:16Three balls and no strikes.
- 59:18Odd batting eighth on Chuck's lineup card today.
- 59:21And that is low O'Borough, it gets away from the catcher,
- 59:24Odd's going to hustle down the line and make Boone go get it.
- 59:27And now he's going to have to throw it and he does.
- 59:30So it is a walk to Eddott with two away.
- 59:34That is the third walk given up by Randy Lurtz.
- 59:37And it will bring him down Robinson.
- 59:42Down Robinson in the second inning bounced out to side for a second base.
- 59:48He'll be stepping in with that added person two away bottom of the fourth inning.
- 59:56Knocking knowing they have to win to stay alive.
- 59:59That's the simplicity of this game.
- 1:00:01There's a high bounceer up behind, second, shortstop, low safe.
- 1:00:05Boone couldn't get enough on the throw, threw it in the dirt.
- 1:00:08It's safe everywhere.
- 1:00:09It's a base hit.
- 1:00:11On in the second, Robinson gets a high shopper out over second base.
- 1:00:16Boone had to leap up to get it.
- 1:00:18Then when he threw the ball, he threw it way down low for side for.
- 1:00:21Not in time.
- 1:00:22It is a base hit for down Robinson.
- 1:00:26Robinson picking up his 40 of hits as a pitcher in his rookie year.
- 1:00:31Now here is Frank DeVere.
- 1:00:34Pirates with four runs and five hits.
- 1:00:37The Phillies with three runs on eight hits.
- 1:00:39There have been no errors in the early going.
- 1:00:41We're in the bottom of the fourth inning at three rivers.
- 1:00:44Frank DeVere's hit list today is bounced out to play once the short on the other time to second.
- 1:00:49And as he steps in, the noise level comes up at three rivers.
- 1:00:59The pitch off the strike call.
- 1:01:04Barry Foote is trotting toward their bullpen.
- 1:01:08He's their number two catcher, I guess.
- 1:01:10If you consider that McCarver usually only catches Carlson,
- 1:01:13Foote is the backup.
- 1:01:17Here's the pitch.
- 1:01:18Swinging and he pops him up right side.
- 1:01:20Hefner with a play over by the coaches box.
- 1:01:23Hefner has it.
- 1:01:24DeVere is out and so are the pirates.
- 1:01:29Made some noise but nobody stepped on that base station.
- 1:01:33No runs and two hits.
- 1:01:34No errors.
- 1:01:35A caught ceiling.
- 1:01:36Two pirates are left.
- 1:01:37There was also a walk in the inning.
- 1:01:39We played four if Nip Van Tucker again.
- 1:01:43And after four innings, pirates four Phillies three.
- 1:01:50And as we get ready to go here to the fifth inning, the pirates are in front four to three
- 1:01:55on a grand slam in the opening inning by Willie Sargell.
- 1:01:58Gives him 11 in his career.
- 1:02:00The ties off Hefner and the pirates all time record.
- 1:02:04And I'll tell you this, that grand slam is the difference right now.
- 1:02:09Randy Lurch has hit two home runs for the Phillies off of Dan Robinson
- 1:02:13as we welcome the Cincinnati Reds Network to our broadcast.
- 1:02:17See you Monday.
- 1:02:18Yeah, get things ready at Riverfront.
- 1:02:20We're going to be there Monday for a one o'clock game.
- 1:02:26They've got a rain delay in the Cincinnati game so they're carrying the pirate Philly
- 1:02:32game and we welcome them aboard.
- 1:02:34It's four to three Pittsburgh.
- 1:02:36Don Robinson is getting ready to work the fifth inning against Gary Monk who is two
- 1:02:41for two, Greg Glawzinski one for two and Hefner who is one for one with an RBI.
- 1:02:47Talk about nip with Doug Ballgames.
- 1:02:54Blake Cullen who is the Public Relations Director of the National League has informed us
- 1:02:59that through last night's game there's been 333 one run games in our league this year.
- 1:03:05That ties the record set two years ago.
- 1:03:08It's dramatic playing a bouncer deep short to bear with him.
- 1:03:11Fast man running, throw his high and he's safe.
- 1:03:17It's an error on the strike stop to Verich.
- 1:03:19The throw was high, Sargell had to go way up to get it.
- 1:03:22With Nadex's good speed he beat the wrap because of the time Sargell came down and Nadex was
- 1:03:27buying.
- 1:03:28It's the first error of the game.
- 1:03:30The tying run is aboard.
- 1:03:32Error to Verich and that will bring up Greg Glawzinski who's single in the first.
- 1:03:36Struck off swinging in the third.
- 1:03:42Now Sargell will hold against their leading base dealer Gary Manek who is on base for the third straight time.
- 1:03:48With two singles and now the short stop throwing error.
- 1:03:51Error to Wadzinski who at a tape measure home run here last night in the club level in the
- 1:03:56upper deck over the left field pavilion is facing down Robinson.
- 1:04:01Here's the fifth.
- 1:04:02Winging it a fly ball right field, well hit.
- 1:04:07Marker back, he's at the fence and won't get it.
- 1:04:10It's off the top of the fence.
- 1:04:12Rolling back into late center.
- 1:04:13Molino there to get it.
- 1:04:14It's a double and they've got runners in second and third and nobody out.
- 1:04:18That ball just missed being over the late center field fence.
- 1:04:22Robinson's fitting for an opposite field home run and just did miss it.
- 1:04:26Marker went as high as he could but it was just off the top of the fence a good backup on that play by
- 1:04:29Molino.
- 1:04:32Coming over into right center to play the carom.
- 1:04:34Wadzinski second hit of the day.
- 1:04:36That's tip number nine for the Phillies.
- 1:04:39Now Richie Hebner will be batting with runners to second and third and nobody out and Chuck
- 1:04:43Tanner is on his way to the mound.
- 1:04:46Eddie Whitson has been throwing in the bullpen as has left hander Grant Jackson.
- 1:04:52But Tanner, he's not given any indication as to whether he's made up his mind or not.
- 1:04:59Yep, he's going to go to the left hander.
- 1:05:01Grant Jackson was Hebner up there.
- 1:05:04Don Robin Finnu's given up nine hits including in that two home runs of the opposing pitcher Randy Lurch.
- 1:05:13And so the young rookie is gone.
- 1:05:19And Grant Jackson who did a great job last night is coming on again.
- 1:05:25Don Robinson worked four plus innings.
- 1:05:28Gave up three runs.
- 1:05:31The two men on a course of his responsibility.
- 1:05:36And Grant Jackson who came out of that bullpen last night and relief of Keeson in the second game and really did a
- 1:05:42yeoman job. So Buck is coming on for the 60th time this year.
- 1:05:49Seven wins, four losses.
- 1:05:51He has five saves.
- 1:05:52Goodie R.A. of 2.99.
- 1:05:54He's worked 75 innings.
- 1:05:58So Jackson the veteran, he's been through it with Baltimore and the Yankees.
- 1:06:04And he'll be coming on to face the first baseman Richie Hebner.
- 1:06:09With runners at second and third, Smith is on deck.
- 1:06:13Van Boone and Seismore.
- 1:06:16Eddie Whitson continues to throw in the bullpen.
- 1:06:19All right, we're ready to go with Grant Jackson facing Richie Hebner with runners at second and third.
- 1:06:24Maddox third, the Wazinski second.
- 1:06:26There's a high pop.
- 1:06:28Farah over, will it come back for him?
- 1:06:30He's going to look at it go up about four rows into the lower boxes down at the far end of the third base dugout.
- 1:06:38Jackson in relief with Don Robinson and he comes in and a peck of trouble here.
- 1:06:43Hebner drove in the one in the first inning with a double just inside the first base bag.
- 1:06:48In the third inning, Hebner was hit by a pitch.
- 1:06:53Here's the 0-1.
- 1:06:55Crowds team backs him out of there. One ball, one strike.
- 1:07:01Phillies are batting in the fifth. They fell behind 4-1, but they are making a comeback here.
- 1:07:08The windup by Jackson and the pitch to Hebner.
- 1:07:11Off speed pops it up, off behind second.
- 1:07:13Garner grabs it and the runners will not be able to move.
- 1:07:18Garner has been playing second base like he owned it here in this series.
- 1:07:22Racing out to get that ball behind second base.
- 1:07:27The runners still at second and third.
- 1:07:29Garner is due. Garner is lying to lap and bounce to second.
- 1:07:36Starkill came over to say something to Grant Jackson.
- 1:07:39Now he's going over to first base.
- 1:07:43Mike Garner is super-aid in this series and they're going to put him on here.
- 1:07:48He got a base open and then he got bone.
- 1:07:50He might have a chance to get that double play ball.
- 1:07:55Here comes the first of four intentional wide ones.
- 1:07:59This will be the first walk to a Philly in the game.
- 1:08:04He'll load him up with one out and bring up the catcher, Bob Bohn.
- 1:08:08You've got Whitson working in the bullpen.
- 1:08:11He's ready if Garner decides that's the direction he wants to go.
- 1:08:15Whitson is the only one throwing at the moment.
- 1:08:18So there's ball four. The intentional pass completed.
- 1:08:21You have Maddox at third.
- 1:08:22Now it's Luzinsky at second.
- 1:08:25Maddox weeps on a high throwing error by Daveris.
- 1:08:27Luzinsky doubled.
- 1:08:29A high off the right center field fin.
- 1:08:31That was the knockout punch on Dan Robinson.
- 1:08:34Jackson got hipner to pop up behind second to Garner.
- 1:08:37They've now walked mid-inventionally and Bob Bohn is the Philly batter.
- 1:08:42Pirates leading four to three.
- 1:08:44That is in jeopardy as the Philly's batting to fifth.
- 1:08:48Jackson looking at Bohn and here's the pitch to him.
- 1:08:51He taps it up left side.
- 1:08:53Dale Farrell wants it.
- 1:08:55Infield fly rule is in effect. He squeezes it two ways.
- 1:09:02A very big out there because the sacrifice fly can no longer tie it at this moment.
- 1:09:09And now, Pysmore who has hit into a double play and lying to center will be the batter.
- 1:09:14And Danny Ozark is coming out.
- 1:09:16He wants to say something to the point on fire.
- 1:09:20Danny Ozark has had more time today on the field than some of the players.
- 1:09:26This time though it wasn't about any move by a pitcher.
- 1:09:29He went out to tell Ted Pysmore that he was going to pitch it for him.
- 1:09:33Pysmore is 0-2 today and 0-9 in the series.
- 1:09:40And Morrison will be the pinch hitter.
- 1:09:51Jim Morrison.
- 1:09:55Let's see what he's been doing with his bat.
- 1:10:01Morrison batting 1-54 but he has three homers in 10-Irby-Ive.
- 1:10:06And Chuck Tanner comes out and asks the point on fire if he went out to him.
- 1:10:13Morrison did not appear in last night's double header.
- 1:10:16Morrison against this for the year is 0-4-12.
- 1:10:24That also might be...
- 1:10:28That might have been designed by Ozark to try to force Tanner to get Jackson out of the game.
- 1:10:35Tanner did go to the Maren but did not make that kind of a decision.
- 1:10:39He just went out to talk.
- 1:10:41And now Morrison will be announced.
- 1:10:51Morrison and Infielder.
- 1:10:53He's come back to the on-deck circle and is working on the bat handle.
- 1:10:56The faces are loaded with fillies.
- 1:10:59Grant Skexon came on in relief with Ted Lamitson.
- 1:11:02The box threw their one-run difference here.
- 1:11:05Pirates 4-1-5 it.
- 1:11:07Got all four in the cluster in the first inning.
- 1:11:09When Captain Willie Sargill hit a grand slam over the wagon gate in deep center.
- 1:11:13Hit it off a Randy Lurtz.
- 1:11:15Lurtz has sent two of his own.
- 1:11:19Billy's 3-1-9 hits.
- 1:11:21The bases are loaded with two away.
- 1:11:23Morrison a right hand batter.
- 1:11:25Now you've got a speed person and Maddox a third.
- 1:11:29He's coming for something here.
- 1:11:33Morrison came back and had a long talk after he was announced with Danny Ozar.
- 1:11:38Jackson switched to him.
- 1:11:40And it's a ball outside and whoa, whoa and no strikes.
- 1:11:47Morrison stepping out, still trying to get loose.
- 1:11:51Randy Lurtz, he of the two home runs and two trips today is on deck.
- 1:11:55One ball and no strikes.
- 1:11:57Lurtz in the third, delivering to Morrison,
- 1:11:59swinging a foul into the backstop, not even at one and one.
- 1:12:02A ball and a strike.
- 1:12:06Grant Jackson who did really a marvelous job last night.
- 1:12:10Trying to do it again here.
- 1:12:16Jackson works an inning in two-thirds and a strong release mid last night.
- 1:12:23Gensikovic was the winner in those ends of last night's Victoria's double header.
- 1:12:27Here's the one-one pitch, swinging a foul off to the right, back into the feet.
- 1:12:32One ball, two strikes.
- 1:12:34This crowd's pulling now for Jackson.
- 1:12:41Maddox third, Lesinsky second, spin a first, two down.
- 1:12:46One ball and two strikes.
- 1:12:48Grant Jackson takes off a side.
- 1:12:49He's trying to do his career as a Billy.
- 1:12:51Now he's trying to shut the door on the old organization.
- 1:12:54He's just signed in, back into the 60s.
- 1:12:58Jackson went on to figure in better things at Baltimore.
- 1:13:02And now in his second year as a pirate, working much more and more effective in 1978,
- 1:13:08now the crowd brings up their roar again as far as it jumps back in.
- 1:13:12As he spins it for size four, one two pitch,
- 1:13:15off-speed pitch high outside didn't go for it.
- 1:13:22Two balls, two strikes, two away.
- 1:13:25Third game of a four game series and Jackson winding, two-two to Morrison.
- 1:13:31Low inside in his ball three, strike two.
- 1:13:37Now he's come to the dilemma.
- 1:13:39Doesn't want to make it too good.
- 1:13:41Doesn't really want to walk into Tida's game.
- 1:13:44And it's a three-two delivery that's anticipated here by Morrison as he steps back in.
- 1:13:50The player says all right, time is back in and Jackson's going to go to a strike.
- 1:13:54Not giving those runners a chance to get a big lead.
- 1:13:56Here's the fifth.
- 1:13:57Waking them out, striking off with a fastball.
- 1:14:00Listen to the hands-free Jackson.
- 1:14:14What a job by Jackson.
- 1:14:16Don't wall Jackson has got the door on the billiard.
- 1:14:20An outstanding release job.
- 1:14:22We've reached the halfway point of this game.
- 1:14:24We're in the middle of the fifth.
- 1:14:26And after four and a half of three rivers,
- 1:14:28the excitement wanes the frame here as the battling marks are doing just that.
- 1:14:33It's the Pirates Four and the Millies Three.
- 1:14:43Red Heroson is the new second baseman.
- 1:14:46All right, Randy Lurch facing Molino who is lost and struck out.
- 1:14:51Left-handed delivers to him and it's laying in a high,
- 1:14:54short-stop left fielder all moving down and it falls off foul,
- 1:14:59upside the line.
- 1:15:01Well, since he came a long, long way, give him credit for a great effort.
- 1:15:06He really had those fire-plug-like churnin' but he couldn't get to it.
- 1:15:11It was in foul down and it's rank one to Omar Molino.
- 1:15:15Molino walked in the first inning.
- 1:15:17He was on base when Sturgill hit the Grand Slam.
- 1:15:20North Carolina's gone back a foot of fifth, nine to seven.
- 1:15:26Here it's the Pirates Four and the Millies Three.
- 1:15:31Omar Molino came over to the on-deck circle.
- 1:15:34Working on that bat hand a little bit.
- 1:15:36Right over there by Parker, the on-deck hitter.
- 1:15:41Pirates need to get something going again.
- 1:15:43Put some daylight in this score.
- 1:15:45Pittsburgh in front, four to three.
- 1:15:47There are no tomorrow for the 78 Pirates.
- 1:15:50They have to win today. They have to win tomorrow.
- 1:15:52They have to win Monday at Cincinnati.
- 1:15:55Here's the other one, fifth.
- 1:15:57Look out! Almost hit him in the head.
- 1:15:59One ball, one strike.
- 1:16:09Strings, strings happening.
- 1:16:12Back in the middle of August, the Pittsburgh Pirates were humiliated
- 1:16:16at Philadelphia, dropped 11-and-a-half games back.
- 1:16:20Now the two was on the other foot of the bucks and keep it going.
- 1:16:24He punched it up in the air, it's up on the screen.
- 1:16:27He was trying to track that one and he popped it up on the screen.
- 1:16:30One ball and two strikes.
- 1:16:35Molino stepping out, looking at his third base coach,
- 1:16:37Joe Lennard, Randy Lurch has kept himself in his gold ballgame with his bat.
- 1:16:41He has hit two home runs.
- 1:16:44He gave up a grand slam to Starchel in the first inning.
- 1:16:47It's four to three, Pittsburgh, out of it a fifth.
- 1:16:52A good Saturday afternoon crowd after almost 50 in here last night for the double header.
- 1:16:57One ball and two strikes and a pitch on the lay.
- 1:17:01Swing and a foul, he's still alive.
- 1:17:03That one fouled off of his left instep.
- 1:17:06An excellent crowd here today, considering the fact that fifth batters are home
- 1:17:10and that is as it should be.
- 1:17:15It's got his football season.
- 1:17:17I'll tell you, there's a lot of baseball fans
- 1:17:20that are interested in what the buck goes do with the Phillies.
- 1:17:24We win tomorrow, they put them in here tomorrow with a shoehorn.
- 1:17:29Not only is it prize day for the fans with all those gifts,
- 1:17:33but the big surprise of all might be dangled for the taking the Eastern Division flag.
- 1:17:39And that's what the buck's hanging on and fattling to do here.
- 1:17:43One ball and two strikes.
- 1:17:44Molina waiting, Randy Lurch delivers.
- 1:17:46Swing and a miss, struck him out.
- 1:17:48Second straight time he's got him.
- 1:17:50That's four strikeouts for Lurch.
- 1:17:52Makes it one away in the bottom of the fifth and brings up Parker, who is one for two.
- 1:17:58Parker with another batting title in his hip pocket.
- 1:18:01He's trying to make points for the MVP and I'll tell you, he made some last night.
- 1:18:08Lamby Lurch here for the Cobra and he steps in one for two.
- 1:18:15And a base hit on the first inning through the right side and the third inning struck out swinging.
- 1:18:19He's at five or ten in the series.
- 1:18:22He's batting three, thirty-four.
- 1:18:26Here's the fifth.
- 1:18:28There's a looping fly ball, left center and Maddox is going to be there.
- 1:18:34Gary Maddox breaking quickly to catch that one and it's two down.
- 1:18:37So Parker's out and it'll bring up Bill Robinson, who had a base hit on the first.
- 1:18:41Strikeout swinging in the third.
- 1:18:43Lurch is giving up five hits.
- 1:18:46Strikeout four has walked three.
- 1:18:57Bill Robinson, racing Lamby Lurch with nobody aboard in two away.
- 1:19:01Left half of the fifth and a ball low outside.
- 1:19:03One and over to Laby.
- 1:19:06Captain Willie moves on deck.
- 1:19:08He unloaded on Lurch with a slammer over the center field wagon gate in the first inning.
- 1:19:13There is a high drive that's going to go far away down the left side.
- 1:19:18Going to end up in our bullpen and it's one ball and one strike.
- 1:19:22Bill Robinson batting two forty-four.
- 1:19:27He's driven in seventy-nine runs.
- 1:19:29Fourteen homers.
- 1:19:32Lurch with a side and into the motion, one one pitch.
- 1:19:36Outside high.
- 1:19:38I tell you the job that Jackson did in the top of the inning when he inherited a full-blown mess.
- 1:19:44Get thrown to pop up with the bases loaded.
- 1:19:47Strikeout pinch hitter Morrison with the bases loaded and into the filly fret.
- 1:19:51That's a ball outside.
- 1:19:53Three and one to Bill Robinson as he pops in the fifth inning.
- 1:19:56Pirates leading by a run in a four to three game.
- 1:19:59The three-one to Bill Robinson is hung on.
- 1:20:02Smash, granted third.
- 1:20:03Mike Schmidt with a long throw across.
- 1:20:05Got him.
- 1:20:06Three up, three down.
- 1:20:07Third to first.
- 1:20:08Mike Schmidt to Hefner.
- 1:20:10We have played five complete innings.
- 1:20:12And still anybody's game.
- 1:20:15The Bucs right now are leading.
- 1:20:17We'll go to the sixth with a Pirate's four and the filly's three.
- 1:20:21And as we get ready to go to the sixth inning, Buc Jackson is going to be looking
- 1:20:28at a pinch hitter, Jose Cardinal.
- 1:20:33The Randy Lertz, who after giving up the grand slam in the first inning did not will.
- 1:20:38He hung in there not only with his throwing arm but with his bat.
- 1:20:41He hit two home runs.
- 1:20:44He's going to be lifted now.
- 1:20:46Jose Cardinal will be the pinch hitter.
- 1:20:51Grant Jackson winding in here is the pinch to Cardinal's wings and fouls it up on the
- 1:20:58top of the screen.
- 1:21:00The Warch has been lifted in favor of Cardinal.
- 1:21:03And McBride, two up next.
- 1:21:09Yankees leading Cleveland, seven to nothing after five.
- 1:21:13Bigarola pitching for the Pines Parmars at a ball high outside.
- 1:21:18Boston in front of Juano, five to one after five.
- 1:21:25That keeps up.
- 1:21:26They'll go to the final day of game apart with the Yankees in the driver's seat.
- 1:21:31One ball and one strike.
- 1:21:32Pinch hitter kind of out of waiting.
- 1:21:34Sign given by Eddott.
- 1:21:35And Jackson fits to it.
- 1:21:37That is a strike call.
- 1:21:39Breaking pitch.
- 1:21:40What's the plate up to with the knees?
- 1:21:42And it's one ball and two strikes.
- 1:21:47The Pirates and the Phillies battling right down to the wire.
- 1:21:50Baxons pitch to Cardinal.
- 1:21:52Please!
- 1:21:53And the message is striking out with a foul.
- 1:21:57Second strikeout for Jackson.
- 1:21:58Third strikeout of a filly in the game.
- 1:22:00Second straight pinch hitter that Jackson has.
- 1:22:02May their strikeout victim.
- 1:22:04And it brings up Big McBride.
- 1:22:09Big McBride has flyed to Spedder twice.
- 1:22:11Had a base hit that was a punch single in the fourth inning.
- 1:22:16He'll be batting here with nobody on in front of him and one away.
- 1:22:19Top of the sixth inning.
- 1:22:24Jackson looking around.
- 1:22:25I think he wants Bill Robinson to shallow up a bit in left field.
- 1:22:30Also move a little toward the line.
- 1:22:36Drop down side of him and he's been the ball hit the bag and jumped down in the right field.
- 1:22:40Down the line where Geiner will grab it quickly.
- 1:22:43They're looking to throw the second but McBride realizing Geiner had made the excellent playout there.
- 1:22:48Decided hey, as short as there will be enough.
- 1:22:51He lined it right down the first base side.
- 1:22:54It hit the bag and jumped about 30 feet in the air in the curse the minute it hit the bag.
- 1:22:58It was a base hit and that is his second hit in this game and his fourth hit in the series.
- 1:23:05That is the first hit off Jackson.
- 1:23:07It's the tenth filly hit in the game.
- 1:23:10And it'll bring up Larry Boer.
- 1:23:12He's over a three today and Boer is over 11 in the series.
- 1:23:16McBride at first one away.
- 1:23:18The Phillies keep coming at you.
- 1:23:20Pirates leading four to three.
- 1:23:22There's a fly ball in the right field.
- 1:23:24Parker will move back a couple of steps.
- 1:23:26Come back in those two and grab it two away.
- 1:23:29Boer is over 12 in this series.
- 1:23:36That's going to bring up Gary Mannock.
- 1:23:39He's been on base three straight times.
- 1:23:42Single in the first and scored and a hipner double.
- 1:23:44There's a buck.
- 1:23:45First base side Jackson would have had to throw in a hurry and it hit the runner in the back.
- 1:23:49But Geiner again backing up.
- 1:23:51Now to throw over Clark Bird and it'll be free for third base.
- 1:24:03And it'll be an error on the throw.
- 1:24:11Second pilot error.
- 1:24:14Mannock is three for four today.
- 1:24:16Running it up the first base side.
- 1:24:19Chuck Tanner came to ask the umpire if he was sure that the runner was in that lane.
- 1:24:25We've had a few of those calls this year.
- 1:24:28Go against us and it was worth the ask.
- 1:24:32So that's 11 hits for the Phillies.
- 1:24:34And here comes Levincky.
- 1:24:36He is single and double.
- 1:24:38He's super clean today.
- 1:24:39He's four for 10 in the series.
- 1:24:41He's founding with one is on the corner and two down.
- 1:24:45And Grant Jackson's going to look at the bull.
- 1:24:48He's waiting for Jackson to stretch.
- 1:24:51Here's the pitch.
- 1:24:52Wing it as it drives.
- 1:24:54And while Parker will never hold it.
- 1:24:56It's a home run into left field for Marion and the Phillies are taking the lead.
- 1:25:01It's a good start.
- 1:25:02And the line drive for Michael Vensky into the left field for Marion and all of a sudden
- 1:25:23is a different game.
- 1:25:24Phillies leading six to four.
- 1:25:25Their magic number, they only need a win.
- 1:25:27And that's the first bit of emotion we've seen from the Phillies bench in this series.
- 1:25:32They came out to greet the bull that time.
- 1:25:35Runs four, five and six.
- 1:25:37And now here is Hefner.
- 1:25:42And the pitch backs him away at the shoulder.
- 1:25:45Greg Levincky doing another number on the Pirates.
- 1:25:48It's his 35th home of the year.
- 1:25:50Gives him 101 RBIs.
- 1:25:52It is his seventh home run against Pittsburgh.
- 1:25:55And the bull low outside to Hefner makes it 2-0.
- 1:26:00Phillies six, Pirates four.
- 1:26:02Phillies about hit the Pirates 12-5.
- 1:26:04Here's the 2-0 to Hefner.
- 1:26:06That came in on him, rode in on him and he couldn't get out of the way and hit the bat for a foul.
- 1:26:10Two bulls, one strike.
- 1:26:12Hefner has driven in the run with a double, been hit by a pitch and popped up the second.
- 1:26:16A three run Philly inning.
- 1:26:18We are in the sixth.
- 1:26:19They have their second lead of the game.
- 1:26:21It's their third home run.
- 1:26:23And he learned to hit two before Levincky hit that one.
- 1:26:25Bowled it back over here into the seat,
- 1:26:27step above the third base dugout.
- 1:26:29And it's two and two with two away.
- 1:26:38Two bulls, two strikes and two outs.
- 1:26:42Brad Jackson ready to work.
- 1:26:44And a pitch on the way to Wichita.
- 1:26:46Off-speed curve ball, swung on high fly ball, right field.
- 1:26:48Woke Terry, Parker waiting for it to come down.
- 1:26:51Woke Levincky, left field.
- 1:26:53And the side has been retired.
- 1:26:57The Phillies get on the board with three.
- 1:26:59The big ball of course was Zinske's three run homer.
- 1:27:01There were three hits.
- 1:27:03One error, throwing error on Jackson.
- 1:27:05Nobody left the bull clean them off.
- 1:27:07No, the buck's now.
- 1:27:09You've been listening, the excitement again continues to build.
- 1:27:12A three river stadium in Pittsburgh.
- 1:27:14Greg Luzinski with that home run for the Phillies with two aboard to give Danny Ozarks ball club a 6-4 lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:27:20Here in no change in terms of the weather situation, rain is still falling and we are continuing to wait in hopes of getting this ball game in.
- 1:27:28Although we understand now that our Man at the Weather Bureau reports that a break in the showers is expected in approximately 15 minutes.
- 1:27:36So that's good news and we still are planning on playing baseball here at Riverfront Stadium this afternoon.
- 1:27:41Right now we go back to Pittsburgh to resume the broadcast of the Phillies and the Pirates.
- 1:27:46New picture for the Phillies war in Brewster.
- 1:28:00Over 28,000 paid in here on a Saturday afternoon to see this all important battle.
- 1:28:05Brewster with a record of 6-3 ERA of 236.
- 1:28:10He's recorded no saves.
- 1:28:12He's worked 88 innings.
- 1:28:14He's on in relief of Landy Lurch.
- 1:28:18He's a right hander and starts a 1-2, a big one.
- 1:28:21A grand slam in the first.
- 1:28:23The Pirates have not scored since that grand slam.
- 1:28:26And as a result, are down in this game 6-4.
- 1:28:30Now the crowd needs to get things going again.
- 1:28:33The pitch goes by Blue and hits the plate on Pyrr Davidson.
- 1:28:45I guess he's alright.
- 1:28:46Barchel stepping out a moment to give him a chance to make sure.
- 1:28:51Brewster last night walked in the winning one in the 2-1 victory in the second game.
- 1:28:55He's facing us with a seventh time this year.
- 1:28:59He's playing in a foul 1-1. He has one win, no losses, no saves.
- 1:29:07In 4-2 third innings and 6 previous outings, 3 hits.
- 1:29:11He is not allowed to fire at the run.
- 1:29:14He's playing in a minute.
- 1:29:16A hard slider right in on his hand.
- 1:29:18He busted one off right in where it's tough to handle.
- 1:29:22One ball and two strikes.
- 1:29:24Barchel batting 2-95.
- 1:29:27Facing Warren Brewster.
- 1:29:29Geiner on deck. Here's the pitch.
- 1:29:31Two post of an A's. Two ball, two strikes.
- 1:29:35Geiner on deck and then Vera.
- 1:29:37We are in the 6-1ing.
- 1:29:40Billy's leading 6-4. Here's the pitch.
- 1:29:43Playing in a foul off of an instep.
- 1:29:45Down the right side and the captain with a lick on his face that tells you,
- 1:29:49I'm not young enough to take that kind of funny spin anymore.
- 1:29:58Barchel, when he hit the home run today, gave him 28 and he has 97 runs back in.
- 1:30:03For a guy that a lot of people thought wouldn't play this year, that is some plus.
- 1:30:08Still into the pitch.
- 1:30:11Into the dirt. Just over to the left side and a 3-2. Joe, that'll grab it.
- 1:30:16So now we're due to playoff pitch.
- 1:30:19The Phillies have 6 runs on 12-1. The Pirates 4 runs 5-1.
- 1:30:30Playoff pitch on the way.
- 1:30:32Swing and a mess of a sinker in the structure of the bat.
- 1:30:36So Brewster opens up with a strikeout out of the bullpen.
- 1:30:39Five strikeouts against the Pirates in the game.
- 1:30:42Lurch at 4 in the first five innings.
- 1:30:48Bill Giner walks in the first inning and stole second.
- 1:30:51Fourth inning bounce-out to Schmitt.
- 1:30:53Giner looking for his first hit in the series and he is 0-4-7.
- 1:30:57Inning number 6.
- 1:30:59Too close to the knees. Ball 1.
- 1:31:02John Milner is on deck with bat 4-bara.
- 1:31:07Badminton McClough throwing in the Philly bullpen. Here's the pitch.
- 1:31:12A high chop. Not by second.
- 1:31:14Bara all along Giner that's in the center for a base hit.
- 1:31:18A leaping Lena that jumps over the mound and then jumps out over second.
- 1:31:22Bowen tried to scratch and get it. It was 5 in the base hit.
- 1:31:26Giner picks up his first hit today and in the series.
- 1:31:30Crafts is the first. Would a 1-out single.
- 1:31:33That is hit number 6 for the Pirates in the game.
- 1:31:36John Milner will be batting for Bara.
- 1:31:41This is a reverse.
- 1:31:43Lately the pattern has been getting front.
- 1:31:46Usually with Milner in the outfield.
- 1:31:48But now Milner is going to be a pinch hitter.
- 1:31:53Milner hitting 2-73.
- 1:31:55Sixth over 38.
- 1:31:56Lens batting in.
- 1:31:57A batter towards second.
- 1:31:58Harrelson has only the one play.
- 1:32:00That's the fourth.
- 1:32:01As Giner went in, hired on Bowen.
- 1:32:03A mixed jury didn't get rid of it.
- 1:32:05And it's a fourth play at second.
- 1:32:07Harrelson to Bowen.
- 1:32:09Donny races Giner and puts Milner in first base on a fielder's choice.
- 1:32:12And brings up head-on.
- 1:32:16Milner at first with 2 away.
- 1:32:19Head-on has fly to center and he is lost.
- 1:32:24Two base hits in 8 official trips in the series.
- 1:32:31Oren Brewster right hander relieving.
- 1:32:35Lined foul down the left side.
- 1:32:37Kicks off the poxied railing and ends up in the shuttle left
- 1:32:41where the pirate will go.
- 1:32:42Giner at strike one.
- 1:32:44Head-on batting.
- 1:32:46He represents the tying run.
- 1:32:47He needs to play some long ball here and give this pirate
- 1:32:50attack a charge.
- 1:32:52Drilling 6-4 in the 6th inning.
- 1:32:56Brewster in relief of lurch.
- 1:32:57Here's the pitch.
- 1:32:58A high bounce and it's going to get into center for a base hit.
- 1:33:02And Milner in the second.
- 1:33:04He'll stop there as Harrecks charged the ball quickly.
- 1:33:07A high bouncer out over the middle.
- 1:33:09Out over the Marinus pass second again.
- 1:33:13That is hit number two.
- 1:33:15And Dave May, a left hand pinch hitter is coming out.
- 1:33:22He will be batting for Jackson.
- 1:33:27Dave May who came to us a couple of weeks ago from the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 1:33:31Eddie Whitson is throwing in the bullpen so he would be the new pitcher
- 1:33:35when we go to the 7th.
- 1:33:36Dave May going to try to pay a dividend.
- 1:33:46May is 0 for 3 as a pirate.
- 1:33:48The pitch.
- 1:33:50Outside fast ball of the letters.
- 1:33:57One ball and no strikes.
- 1:33:58John Milner is the second head on as it first.
- 1:34:00Two away.
- 1:34:01Take a big club ship now.
- 1:34:03Look out to the fourth of this goal there.
- 1:34:05Ball through.
- 1:34:16We're getting down to judgment time.
- 1:34:19And that's a strike.
- 1:34:21A sinker and a ease on the inside corner.
- 1:34:23Two balls and a strike.
- 1:34:26The pirates cannot lose another game.
- 1:34:29The Phillies are leading 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:34:32Lusinski's three run home and put him in front.
- 1:34:34And that's a strike on the letters on the inside corner.
- 1:34:38The Brewster falling behind comes back with two cold strikes.
- 1:34:41Two and two.
- 1:34:42Dave May the pinch hitter batting left handed.
- 1:34:45Milner second out at first.
- 1:34:47Here's the pitch.
- 1:34:48Two close above the knees.
- 1:34:50That makes it full.
- 1:34:58Chuck Tanner comes out.
- 1:34:59He wants those runners to get ready to go.
- 1:35:03A payoff pitch is due with two away now.
- 1:35:06As Dave May steps out trying to fall with a point on fire.
- 1:35:15The crowd trying to put some adrenaline in Davey May's bat.
- 1:35:19Runners going, swinging, batter for safe.
- 1:35:21Hempner with it, runs to the back, side retired.
- 1:35:27No runs.
- 1:35:28A couple of hits no errors and two men are left.
- 1:35:32We have played through six full innings.
- 1:35:35We've got three more chances to do it.
- 1:35:38And it's a must situation in every respect of that word.
- 1:35:42After six innings, the Philadelphia Philly Six, the Pittsburgh Pirates four.
- 1:35:47Eddie Whitson comes on to be the new pitcher.
- 1:35:49There are other changes.
- 1:35:50Bill Robinson moves from left field to third base.
- 1:35:53John Milner who pinched for Barra stays in the game to play left field.
- 1:35:57Eddie Whitson four and nine has come on now to be our third pitcher.
- 1:36:02And to tell you about Whitson stats and take you through the seven when Schmidt steps in,
- 1:36:07here is Lanny Britaire.
- 1:36:08Okay, thank you very much Milo.
- 1:36:12Eddie Whitson making his 43rd appearance of the year.
- 1:36:17What is that sound, beautiful doesn't it?
- 1:36:21Four wins and I lost it.
- 1:36:23Four wins and I lost it.
- 1:36:24Four saves.
- 1:36:25And a Deale of 3.11.
- 1:36:35Mike Schmidt will lead off with Philadelphia.
- 1:36:38He is over two in the ball game and he's left field in the first inning by a side in the third.
- 1:36:43It's not going to click in if you have to do it.
- 1:36:45I'm afraid the frog is chirping harder than you are pal.
- 1:36:49You need a big sniff with a lot of honey in it.
- 1:36:57And there's nothing you can do about it.
- 1:36:59I've been there.
- 1:37:01Right now, umpires, there may have asked for the whether to look enough.
- 1:37:09They want the lights to come on.
- 1:37:11It isn't that bad, is it?
- 1:37:14They've been looking up with the lights.
- 1:37:15Maybe that's what they want.
- 1:37:16They want them to come on slowly here.
- 1:37:17But any rate here is Schmidt.
- 1:37:19Schmidt is over two and walked intentionally in the fifth inning.
- 1:37:22He is two for eight in the series.
- 1:37:24Facing right hander Eddie Whitson and here's the pitch.
- 1:37:27He's going to follow back over to the right side.
- 1:37:32Whitson is facing the Phillies for the fifth time.
- 1:37:35He has no record against them.
- 1:37:37No wins, no losses and no saves.
- 1:37:40Against the Phillies in four roundings, five and two third innings, ten hits, six wins all earned.
- 1:37:45Walked only one, struck out nine.
- 1:37:48And his pitch to Schmidt is swinging in the midst of a high pass for a low and two.
- 1:37:56In the seventh inning, the Pirates on the short end right now.
- 1:37:59Luzinsky's three run homer up. Jackson in the sixth.
- 1:38:01Put the Phillies in front for the second time in the game.
- 1:38:04No balls, two strikes.
- 1:38:06Whitson takes off his sign.
- 1:38:08Now has the one he wants.
- 1:38:09Here's the oh two to third baseman Schmidt high on a fastball one and two.
- 1:38:13Don Robinson started.
- 1:38:15Struggled a bit today.
- 1:38:17Through two home run balls to Lurch that earned him.
- 1:38:19In the fifth inning after a double by Luzinsky they brought Jackson on.
- 1:38:22And he really did his job in that fifth inning.
- 1:38:24Then Jackson landed in the trouble of his own in the sixth.
- 1:38:26Climax for the home run by Luzinsky with two of a board.
- 1:38:29Swinging in the midst of the breaking pitch going down and away.
- 1:38:32Schmidt strikes out to start the Phillies seventh.
- 1:38:35Ford strike out of a Phillie in the game and it'll bring up Bob Boone who has single bounce to short and pops a bird.
- 1:38:43Boone is one for three to days, three for seven in the series.
- 1:38:48They sing Eddie Whitson.
- 1:38:54Whitson waiting a moment.
- 1:38:56Now Whitson in to read the sign from it up.
- 1:39:01And the first pitch inside of all.
- 1:39:04Coming out Bill Robinson is playing at third base.
- 1:39:09John Milner's in left.
- 1:39:11Whitson the new pitcher.
- 1:39:13One ball and no strikes and here's the pitch.
- 1:39:16Swinging in a hit right back through the middle and almost took Eddie Whitson's shield as well as it.
- 1:39:21One of that ball was hit higher.
- 1:39:23Boone racks one right back through the middle.
- 1:39:26I don't know Whitson got on the way to tell you the truth.
- 1:39:29First hit off Whitson 13 Phillies hits.
- 1:39:32The Phillies had not been hitting.
- 1:39:36But for today they've gotten their hit and close on and they've got 13 hits in this game and they're leading six to four.
- 1:39:43They're bringing up Haroldson. He's batting for the first time today and in the series.
- 1:39:48He's batting 224.
- 1:39:54Batting left handed against right hander Whitson. Here's the pitch to him.
- 1:39:57He puts it up the first base side.
- 1:39:59Starchel will grab it. Flip behind him to Ganger.
- 1:40:01They just did. Get him at the wire.
- 1:40:04And the sack goes three four.
- 1:40:07Makes it two and moves Boone into scoring position.
- 1:40:12And it looks like Tim McIver is going to come on.

- 1:41:19So here's McIver. The Phillies are leading six to four.
- 1:41:23Sevens inning. Whitson's pitched to McIver.

- 1:41:31Bibby continues to throw in the pirate bullpen.
- 1:41:34The ball is heating up in the Philadelphia bullpen.
- 1:41:38The Phillies need to win. The pirates cannot afford a loss.
- 1:41:42The pitch. Swinging in a high fly ball shallow light center.
- 1:41:46Omar Marlino is there and the side has been repaired.
- 1:41:52No runs, one hit. No errors.
- 1:41:55And now this car will stand as one over 28,000 on a Saturday afternoon.
- 1:42:00And they'll try with their vocal chords to do what they did last night.
- 1:42:04Where the fuck goes on?
- 1:42:06We won last night in the ninth and fourth of those games.
- 1:42:09Now we're calling to the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:42:11And with the scoreboard telling this tale.
- 1:42:13Phillies six, pirates four.
- 1:42:15Go back now and join Milo Hamilton in Pittsburgh.
- 1:42:18McIver is the third Phillie pitcher following Wirtz and Rooster.
- 1:42:25Frank Tavares whole fourth lead today.
- 1:42:30Bicks up a couple of hits in each of the games last night.
- 1:42:33But has gone hit with so far today.
- 1:42:35Batting 278 is a lead off to the seventh inning.
- 1:42:38Marlino's on Decton Parker.
- 1:42:40Doug McRall ready to throw his first pitch in the relief today.
- 1:42:44And here it comes to Tavares and it is high inside ball one.
- 1:42:47The Phillies six runs, 13 hits.
- 1:42:50They've got two homers on a Randy Lurch insider
- 1:42:53and a big one from Levincky that put him back in front.
- 1:42:56The pirates are four seven and two with a grand plan by Starchel.
- 1:42:59Walked up to Bunt, took it down low with two balls, no strikes.
- 1:43:03McRall's pitch.
- 1:43:11And it's a strike call in the outside corner.
- 1:43:17Right hand batter, left hand pitcher.
- 1:43:19McRall out of the motion.
- 1:43:22As a high fly ball, shot a right.
- 1:43:24McBride head in position, perfectly makes the catch one away in the seventh.
- 1:43:30Tavares flying out to bake McBride.
- 1:43:33Here's Omar Marlino.
- 1:43:34He walked in the first inning was on base when Starchel hit the grand slam.
- 1:43:38Since then Marlino has struck out twice.
- 1:43:40Randy Lurch got him both times.
- 1:43:44Pirates now have not scored since the Starchel grand slam in the opening inning.
- 1:43:50And as a result of trailing six to four in the seventh.
- 1:43:53Marlino the batter Parker do up next.
- 1:43:58Doug McGrall takes some delivers.
- 1:44:02There's a fly ball in the left field and Levincky had him play perfectly.
- 1:44:06Makes the catch and it's two away.
- 1:44:10Marlino trying to take the tug to the opposite field.
- 1:44:12He did, but got it up in the air to Levincky who moved back about four steps and made the play.
- 1:44:18Now the big guy is coming out.
- 1:44:22Dave Parker who got a base hit in the first, struck out in the third,
- 1:44:26wide out to center in the fifth.
- 1:44:28So he's won for three to nine.
- 1:44:30He's had five hits in the series, batting 334.
- 1:44:34The batting title is his, but he wants to play on a winner.
- 1:44:40And here is the fifth.
- 1:44:43A high bouncer to second.
- 1:44:44Haroldson backs up on the ball, draws in it's a three up three down inning for Doug McGrall.
- 1:44:50He came on and made it look easy.
- 1:44:52Now it's the end of seven.
- 1:44:54Only two more shots left.
- 1:44:57It's the job of the pitcher on that mound to keep it where it is in order to get the puck bats a chance.
- 1:45:02We'll go to the eighth inning with the Phillies coming to bat leading.
- 1:45:05Philadelphia six, Pittsburgh four.
- 1:45:08Well you're being covered on two fronts this afternoon bringing you the bonus of Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies
- 1:45:13in the third game of that crucial series in Pittsburgh.
- 1:45:16Philadelphia needs only to win one to reign as a National League East Champion for the third consecutive season.
- 1:45:22Pittsburgh coming off of a double-edder sweep last night with today trailing at the end of seven innings of play
- 1:45:27six to four to the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:45:30So the next to the last day of the regular season things are still very much up in the air.
- 1:45:35In two divisions the American League East where the Yankees lead Boston by one game.
- 1:45:39Both of those teams are winning today at New York at Sigaroah shooting for his 20th win working on a four-hit shutout
- 1:45:46through seven innings as the Yankees hold a seven-to-nothing edge in that game.
- 1:45:49Reggie Jackson has hit a home run for the New York club.
- 1:45:52It is 26th of the year and in the bottom of the eighth at Boston the Red Sox lead to run 05-1
- 1:45:58as Dennis Eckersley tries to notch his 20th win for the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:46:02Time running out on Pittsburgh and we'll go back now to the Phillies batting in the top of the eighth inning.
- 1:46:08Alright here we go to the eighth with FAKE MCBRIDE, Larry Bull and Gary Monick do up as the top of the Daniels' Accordor.
- 1:46:15FAKE MCBRIDE is two for four today as that sixth is from the series.
- 1:46:22Please say yes to the answer in the following minutes.
- 1:46:25I'm going to take all the blame for the other team.
- 1:46:28I've been telling the PA announcer requesting the fans now to show the courtesy that they should not throw anything on the field.
- 1:46:37I mentioned McBride with his two hits today as four hits.
- 1:46:41Hit two in the first game last time and drove in four runs with a couple of doubles.
- 1:46:45And Eddie Whitson ready to work his second inning.
- 1:46:50Philadelphia batting and leading by two.
- 1:46:54And Whitson's pitched to McBride. He swings and he misses.
- 1:46:58Oh and one.
- 1:47:00McBride has two hits. Maddox three, Lozinski three.
- 1:47:03Lozinski's last of course was a big one of three run armor that put them back in front.
- 1:47:07Hevner and RBI double, boon two hits.
- 1:47:10Randy Lerks of Snyder had two homers before he left.
- 1:47:13This comes way inside almost takes McBride with it.
- 1:47:17One ball and one strike.
- 1:47:20Inning number eight at three rivers in Pittsburgh.
- 1:47:25A cloud of over 28,000 here.
- 1:47:29They've still got some pull left in him and they're going to do their best here.
- 1:47:34They really wrinkled the Phillies a bit last night.
- 1:47:37One ball and one strike.
- 1:47:39And Whitson's pitched.
- 1:47:41Swinging in a line drive single to fatter. His third straight hit.
- 1:47:45Reno's throwback into Garner but the second base back.
- 1:47:51And Larry Sherry has started his walk to the mound.
- 1:47:56That is the second hit off Whitson and 14 hits for Philadelphia.
- 1:48:03The batter is Larry Bowler, 0 for four today and 0 for 12 in this series.
- 1:48:08Sherry, Hop, Whitson and Bill Robinson forming the courts out on the mound.
- 1:48:13He got McBride at first to comply. Leads it off with a single in the eighth inning.
- 1:48:18The Phillies are in front of this game.
- 1:48:20Six to four. They've doubled the pirate hit count 14 to seven.
- 1:48:25And the Bucks just can't out a forward to let the Phillies put any more pressure on here
- 1:48:30as far as expanding the lead.
- 1:48:32And Kent Zacobi has started to throw in the bullpen.
- 1:48:35Look, it's been three round homer.
- 1:48:40In the sixth inning off Jackson, got the Phillies back in front.
- 1:48:45And that erased the Stardale Grand Slam first inning lead.
- 1:48:52Here's the pitch. Out, runner was not going.
- 1:49:00Larry Bowler looking down at his third base coach Billy DeMars.
- 1:49:10One roll no strikes. He's back up in there, batting left handed against the right hander Whitson.
- 1:49:14McBride has his lead at first. Stardale trying to hold him close. Here's the pitch.
- 1:49:18He bumps it up the first base side. And Stardale throw behind and it's safe at first base.
- 1:49:24Geiner got there for the throw, but Bowler beats it off.
- 1:49:27Two men on and no one away.
- 1:49:30It goes as a once single.
- 1:49:32Dragging it up the first base side.
- 1:49:34Stardale came in through quickly behind him to Geiner, but Bowler had beaten the rep.
- 1:49:39Hit number three off Whitson. 15 hits for Philadelphia and it brings up Gary Maddox.
- 1:49:46Two on and no one out. And Chuck Tanner's on his way.
- 1:49:51Probably figuring here, we're in the last corral.
- 1:49:57And if we're going to do it, I'm going to go with a guy who prung me.
- 1:50:02Because Zacavi is out there and ready.
- 1:50:06And Zacavi will be called upon.
- 1:50:08Whitson after giving up two hits in the eighth will be relieved.
- 1:50:17And Kent Zacavi will make the long walk from the bullpen for the 90th time this year.
- 1:50:23Eight wins, seven losses. He both won both ends of the double header last night.
- 1:50:28He has 30 saves.
- 1:50:32And Zacavi now as the crowd responds to him making that walk.
- 1:50:38He's got to come in and put out another major uprising here.
- 1:50:45The New York Yankees in the bottom of the eighth are still leading Cleveland.
- 1:50:49Seven to nothing.
- 1:50:51Boston over Toronto. Five to one in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:50:57And Kent Zacavi, who's been the workhorse out of that bullpen this year,
- 1:51:05has reached the mound and Chuck Tanner had agreed him to hand him the bull and say,
- 1:51:09alright, this is it.
- 1:51:13The Phillies are leading six to four. They've got two men on with nobody out.
- 1:51:17The game is in the eighth inning.
- 1:51:20Gary Maddox has had three for four today. He is due up.
- 1:51:30So Zacavi will be announced.
- 1:51:33And he is the fourth pitcher used for the Pirates today.
- 1:51:40Robinson started. Jackson in the fifth, Whitson in the seventh and out Zacavi in the eighth.
- 1:51:48Phillies have had two home runs out of Randy Lurch, the standing pitcher,
- 1:51:52and Greg Lusinski hit one into the pavilion in left field.
- 1:51:58And that gave them their second lead of the game and that's what they're working on right now, six to four.
- 1:52:10It's come down to the next of the last day here.
- 1:52:12And it looks like in the American leagues that the Yankees and Boston will start tomorrow a game apart on their final day.
- 1:52:19Because the Yankees are leading seven and nothing and the Red Sox are leading five to one.
- 1:52:23Both of those games in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 1:52:29Alright, Zacavi says he's ready and Gary Maddox will step in.
- 1:52:32He's been on base every time up today. Three singles and Whitson in error. He has scored twice.
- 1:52:41McBride and Boa, two speed merchants are on with nobody out.
- 1:52:53And Zacavi with a big deep breath. He lets it all out.
- 1:52:57Now, Whitson to read the sign from Mada.
- 1:53:01Stretching, they're expecting the punt and before any pitches thrown the move was on
- 1:53:07and Zacavi looking to see if Garner checked in behind the runner a second.
- 1:53:11But McBride didn't go for that fate and so Zacavi wisely held on to the ball.
- 1:53:20Maddox three hits today, four hits in a series and light out Garner letting Zacavi know what the defensive sign has been flashed by Chuck Tanner.
- 1:53:28So, always Garner's job to do that.
- 1:53:31Early in the year of course it was spent at the second baseman does it.
- 1:53:34Let's see the infield and how they move.
- 1:53:37There's the punt up the first base side, Starchel with it. His only play is behind him to counter and Maddox is out and moves two runners up.
- 1:53:44Three four on the sack. It was the only play they had.
- 1:53:49And now with Vince G, three for four, included in error three run homers.
- 1:53:53We'll be batting with Garner to second and third with one away.
- 1:54:01When the ball hit one out of here, his last time up with the sixth inning it gave him 35 for the year and put him over the century mark in RBIs, giving him 101.
- 1:54:14So with runners at second and third and one away, Lovinsky is arrived at the batter's box. Richie Hebner is on deck.
- 1:54:26So Ken Tzikovic with a monumental task in front of him.
- 1:54:31And Tick Coupe got that batter, waving out there, trying to pull him through.
- 1:54:38The infield is up all the way around. The stretch by Tzikovic looked to third. The pitch to Lovinsky too close and it hit him.
- 1:54:48Hit him on the forearm. Faces are loaded.
- 1:55:06So it by a pitcher, it's loaded in there.
- 1:55:09It's the first one by Tzikovic, the second to be hit today. Hebner was hit in the third inning by Don Robinson.
- 1:55:15And here is Richie Hebner. He doubled in a run in the first, was hit by a pitcher in the third.
- 1:55:20Simpson has popped a second and flyed to right.
- 1:55:23And a former pirate will back with the faces loaded and Lovinsky may be lifted here.
- 1:55:31And Jerry Martin is candy will run for it.
- 1:55:34And then with Staten the game to play the outfield.
- 1:55:45So Richie Hebner, a left hand batter. The last thing Tzikovic in the world wanted to do was hit Lovinsky.
- 1:55:52So Martin running in first place. The faces are loaded.
- 1:56:02The obematics making the only out of the inning so far on the sacrifice.
- 1:56:08And there's a high bouncer just outside the plate line.
- 1:56:13He thought it was fair, the umpire had called his foul. It was a high chop about eight feet up the first base side.
- 1:56:23He stepped on the plate and was ready to fire to first, but the first base umpire was stopping him yelling and saying it was a foul ball.
- 1:56:31I'm looking down at the ground in disbelief.
- 1:56:36He was ready to come up with a double play that would have ended the threat, but it was foul just outside the first base line about eight feet up the line.
- 1:56:47No balls in one strike. McRide is a third, Bowler's a second.
- 1:56:53Vince runner Martin at first, one out. Eighth inning. Tzikovic pitched to Hebner.
- 1:56:57He winds it down the right side and it will be an extra base hit into the corner. McRide scores, Bowler scores.
- 1:57:04Martin is going to be waved. Hebner is headed for third. The throw to the plate was safe and Hebner has been at third base and he cleared the bases.
- 1:57:18It's a double third on the throw to the plate and three runs batted in and the Phillies have widened the gap to nine four.
- 1:57:30The first hit off to Colby, 16 hits for the Phillies. Runs seven, eight and nine scoring on the Hebner double into the right field corner.
- 1:57:48Coming up, Smith, three RBIs for Hebner, four RBIs for Hebner in this game. He's got a dozen of them against the Pirates this year.
- 1:58:00Infield up all the way around with Hebner at third base getting credit for a double, took third on the throw to the plate.
- 1:58:09It was not in time to get her sliding Martin and a side eye breaking pitches in for a strike on Smith.
- 1:58:16They had come from 11 and a half back to a game and a half. Now they're down nine to four in the eighth inning.
- 1:58:30They had a four to one lead at one time. Here's the pitch. Shows front and took it for a strike.
- 1:58:37No balls, two strikes on Smith. So Hebner is at third. He cleared them with a double into the right field corner.
- 1:58:47So the Phillies needing a game when they came into this series threatening to put it away here in the eighth inning because they are leading nine to four.
- 1:58:59So Colby's pitch on the way and is just outside, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:59:07And So Colby coming on in the eighth inning and relief bullets and fourth prior pitchers of the afternoon.
- 1:59:15A day that started so glamorously and gloriously with a grand slam by Starchel and the box had not scored sent them but the Phillies have been.
- 1:59:23Here's the pitch. Too tight of an ease and it's two and two. And Randy Lurch, the standing pitcher who came up the grand slam,
- 1:59:30kept himself and his club in the game by hitting two home runs up down Robinson.
- 1:59:35Then in the sixth inning, Lusensky hit a three run homer. Now a three run double by Hebner and the Phillies are leading the Pirates nine to four.
- 1:59:43Two more chances for the box. But to Colby needs to shut the door here.
- 1:59:49A pouncer foul outside third and skips up off the boxy railing to the third base umpire and it's two and two.
- 1:59:56Our boon will be next. The Phillies have out hit the Pirates 16 to seven. Leading the score nine to four.
- 2:00:04The Pirates who picked up two dramatic ninth inning wins last night will have two more chances to try to pull out the third one and stay alive in the National League Eastern Shades.
- 2:00:15Two balls and two strikes. Here's the pitch to Smith. A high fly ball to center that's going to score a one as Milano is right at the edge of the track.
- 2:00:24Hebner will walk in with run number ten on the sacrifice fly by Smith.
- 2:00:33Now it is 10 to four Philadelphia.
- 2:00:36Boon to performer will step in.
- 2:00:45Boon had a single in the second and a single in the seventh.
- 2:00:56I'm booning out and he's up in there and to Colby ready to work with nobody on. Two away and the breaking pitch outside.
- 2:01:04But four runs across they have scored seven runs in the last three innings and have come from down four to three to lead 10 to four.
- 2:01:14One ball and no strikes and here's the pitch. Sinker outside corner for the Nees and it's one and one.
- 2:01:19To Colby working on Bob Boone. Harrelson would be next.
- 2:01:26Two straight hits against Whitson and to Colby came on. And even he fouled it off to the left side.
- 2:01:32One ball and two strikes on the catcher Boone.
- 2:01:37In the bottom of the eighth we will have Robinson, Starchel and Geiner to try to get something going.
- 2:01:42It's going to take some doing. One ball and two strikes. Here's the pitch.
- 2:01:48There's a high pop right side. Starchel wants it and the captain will grab it.
- 2:01:52Side is retired but the Phillies put a big force spot up there.
- 2:01:58How does crowd going to try to give the puck bats a lift? Four runs on one, two, three hits.
- 2:02:04The big four of course is Richie Hempner's three run double.
- 2:02:07There weren't any errors. Nobody was left.
- 2:02:10And we're getting down to cases now folks. After seven and a half it's Philadelphia 10 and Pittsburgh four.
- 2:02:18Things do not look good for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Philadelphia with four in the eighth inning now leaded by a score of 10 to four.
- 2:02:24And we'll go back to join the Pirate Baseball Network.
- 2:02:28Jerry Martin who ran for Lozinski stays in the game to play left field.
- 2:02:33And as we go to the bottom of the eighth, Doug McGraw ready to work his second inning.
- 2:02:38Bill Robinson is one for three today.
- 2:02:41And Doug McGraw's first pitch in the eighth is swing on and foul to the screen and a strike one.
- 2:02:46The Phillies leading 10 to four.
- 2:02:49They came to town needing a win. They didn't get it last night.
- 2:02:57They're leading by six with two innings to go. Here's the pitch.
- 2:03:01Bounced it up there. And the count is even at a ball and a strike.
- 2:03:09Left hand reliever McGraw, he's their third pitcher.
- 2:03:13And delivers to Bill Robinson, swinging and fouling out of play back to the right side and it's one and two.
- 2:03:22McGraw's still pulling here.
- 2:03:27Trying to lift the buckles up by their bootstraps. They're down by six.
- 2:03:32After leading four to one at the end of the first inning. Here's the one to fifth.
- 2:03:37Low inside, two balls, two strikes. Willie Starchel who hits the grand slam in the first inning is due up next.
- 2:03:45Two balls and two strikes. McGraw reached the sign from Bob Boone.
- 2:03:50He's ready. And here's the fifth.
- 2:03:54Check swing foul up on the screen again. He tried to duck away from the high inside pitch but it hit the bat.
- 2:04:00And the count holds it two and two.
- 2:04:10The fifth. Go ball swung on and delivered way back into left field. If it's going to stay there it is just foul.
- 2:04:18About a foot and a half outside the foul ball.
- 2:04:22Willie might have gone way over there. Almost got through it. That ball just must be in gone. It just did hook off about the last entry.
- 2:04:32So it's a long noisy foul and the count is still two balls and two strikes.
- 2:04:37Bill Robinson trying to strike something for the buck. Who made a major comeback since mid-August.
- 2:04:44They brought it down to the next to the last day. And up he'll climb now. Trilling ten to four in the eighth.
- 2:04:51Two balls, two strikes. McGraw's pitch. World inside. Full count.
- 2:04:58The bucks need two big innings. They're trailing ten to four.
- 2:05:04And a payoff pitch from McRodder Robinson swinging and funneling out of play up to the right side.
- 2:05:09Robbie's still alive.
- 2:05:20McGraw takes that big deep rep. Now he's ready. And a payoff pitch on the way.
- 2:05:26Swinging and fouling. Robbie hanging tough and it's still three and two.
- 2:05:30Pirates have been limited to seven hits. They got three of those in the very first inning.
- 2:05:42And another three-two is due. And here it comes from the tug. Line drive. Left field. It is a pair of balls.
- 2:05:50Rattles up into the corner. Mark plays the carom. Strong throw but it's off target in second.
- 2:05:56Robinson leads off with a double in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:06:00What's the effect of being a start of something? The double for Bill Robinson is his thirty-sixth.
- 2:06:06The first hit off McRodder. It's the eighth hit of the game for the Muck. And it brings up the captain, Willie Stajl.
- 2:06:17The Phillies have ten runs on sixteen hits. The Pirates four runs eight hits.
- 2:06:22The Muck's in for Willie Stajl.
- 2:06:26If Robinson has excited something, the Muck's needs to keep it going.
- 2:06:32Stajl one for three. It was a grand slam in the opening and he has threw ball high inside.
- 2:06:37One ball and no strike-in with that. Bob Lone calls five.
- 2:06:42Big ball, Lane Andrew, who's been very effective for the Phillies in seventy-eight.
- 2:06:46Ron Reed is heating up in their bullpen. In the left field bullpen, Jim Bibby is cranking it up.
- 2:06:52One ball, no strike-in. Stajl. The stretch. The pitch.
- 2:06:58And a strike is called over the outside corner, let her high.
- 2:07:03Philadelphia coming on strong in the sixth and the eighth, scoring seven runs in those two frames and leading by six.
- 2:07:09Here's the one-one to Stajl. And another strike in off-speed breaking pitch and it's one and two.
- 2:07:19McRodder going to the name of pitching. Off-speed pitches a couple of times here on Stajl.
- 2:07:24One ball, two strikes. Look to second. Here's the pitch.
- 2:07:29Followed over here to the left side into the seats and it's zero one and two to Captain Willie who has had a marvelous comeback here.
- 2:07:37Twenty-eight homers. Ninety-seven runs, badadans.
- 2:07:41Fixed up his eleventh career grand slam in the first inning today.
- 2:07:46Here's the one-two pitch. Swinging them in, striking off.
- 2:07:52First strike out for McRod today. It is the sixth strike out of a pirate in the game and it brings up Bill Garner.
- 2:08:00There was had a walk and a stolen base, a bounce to third and a base set. He's one for two.
- 2:08:07Garner facing Cog McRod in the eighth inning.
- 2:08:17Watching and looking back, long hesitation this time. The pitch to Garner and it is low inside ball one.
- 2:08:25Philadelphia Phillies.
- 2:08:29They look as though they had the pirates buried on the 12th of August. 11 and a half games back.
- 2:08:35Here we are the next to the last day and there is a strike call in the outside corner of the knees.
- 2:08:43The pirates who have won 24 in a row at home coming into the day.
- 2:08:50One ball, one strike, one out. Renner at second, Robertson the pitch, swing on and popped him up behind the shortstop bowler.
- 2:08:56He's waiting and he has it two away.
- 2:09:04The first one to bring up John Milner who was a pit-seller in the sixth inning for better remained in the game to play left field and comes out for the second time in this game.
- 2:09:18Left hand pitcher, left hand manner, McRod Milner with teammates at one time with a New York Mets.
- 2:09:27Robinson left off ending with a double, now they're a two away and a strike is called a Milner on the inside corner between the knees and the belt.
- 2:09:38The battling butts have been just back.
- 2:09:43No balls, one strike. Here's the pitch.
- 2:09:46Off-speed breaking pitch, strike call. Boy he's been effective with that pitch in his inning.
- 2:09:53Oh and to the count, Bill Robinson started it off with a double in his left field corner, remained in second, his start will strike out and Keiner popped up.
- 2:10:00Here's the O2 to Milner, swinging him in for the second, he's struck him out and the side has been retired.
- 2:10:10No runs and one hit, no areas, a double that started the inning wasted and one man left. Only one more, one strike. Here's the pitch.
- 2:10:19Off-speed breaking pitch, strike call. Boy he's been effective with that pitch in his inning.
- 2:10:26Oh and to the count, Bill Robinson started it off with a double in his left field corner, remained in second, his start will strike out and Keiner popped up.
- 2:10:33Here's the O2 to Milner, swinging him in for the second, he's struck him out and the side has been retired.
- 2:10:43No runs and one hit, no areas, a double that started the inning wasted and one man left. Only one more shot and we will go to the ninth inning with the Phillies, 10th and the Pirates 4.
- 2:10:55Only one inning stands between the Philadelphia Phillies and their third straight Eastern Division Championship and we will pick up the ninth inning of action with Milo Hamilton.
- 2:11:04The first inning will be leading it off and Fibby's first pitch is high ball one.
- 2:11:20Fibby working in the ninth and the pitch to Harrelson and a strike call on the outside corner. One ball, one strike.
- 2:11:33The pitch on the way from the pick right hander and it is a swing and a miss and it's one and two.
- 2:11:39Doug McGraw the pitcher is two up next.
- 2:11:48Well outside two and two.
- 2:11:53And as you look at this situation, 10 to four in the ninth, that's a bad reflecting.
- 2:12:01It's just been a game closer when you came into this series but you can't look at it that way. Those games are gone.
- 2:12:08It's like your Aunt Minnie if she had a mustache, she would have been your Uncle Fred but it didn't happen that way.
- 2:12:14This is a club that is battled back with everybody out of written off, all in size and that walks Harrelson.
- 2:12:23Fibby walks the first man that he faces and there comes Doug McGraw.
- 2:12:32Who doesn't get a chance to bat very often?
- 2:12:38He's only been to bat four times all year.
- 2:12:42He throws left bats right.
- 2:12:45Harrelson is first base, Fibby stretches, looks back, McGraw putting it up to first base side.
- 2:12:51Fibby would have almost collided with Sargell, that would have been like two max trucks.
- 2:12:55Through the counter it is a one four sock.
- 2:13:01And McGraw will be the batter. He has had three straight hits in the fourth, sixth and eighth and triggered some inning for them.
- 2:13:11It started with the grand slam in the first place Sargell but Landy Lurk who threw that grand slam.
- 2:13:18When you go back and look at this game, it's going to turn out that he really kept them in the game because he hit two home runs and sparked them and kept them from oblivion.
- 2:13:29Then when he was relieved, they got three on a home run by Lozinski.
- 2:13:34Hebner got a bases loaded double in the eighth and the Phillies are leading ten to four.
- 2:13:38Harrelson is second with one out, McGraw is the batter and a pass ball on the outside corner.
- 2:13:43And Lozinski is the batter and a pass ball on the outside corner.
- 2:13:48And Lozinski is the batter and a pass ball on the outside corner.
- 2:13:53And the Phillies have been the hitting and they've done the scoring.
- 2:13:58They've out hit the buck sixteen to eight lead in the score ten to four, ninth inning.
- 2:14:02Fibby has the sign from it out.
- 2:14:05Stretches and looks back. Here's the pitch.
- 2:14:08It came out again on the screen.
- 2:14:18I think McBride two strikes. Three hits today, five hits in the series.
- 2:14:27Inbuby, a tough pirate pitcher of the game, stretching, looking back to second, comes on to McBride, almost nipped him in the shoulder, one ball and two strikes.
- 2:14:45The light at the end of the tunnel. The pucks have one more chance to keep it lit.
- 2:14:54One ball and two strikes. And here's Bibby's pitch.
- 2:14:57Down to their first base side, Starchell grabs it behind the back, runs the first, gets McBride, Harrelson moves over to third.
- 2:15:05It's two away and brings up Pohla. Pohla had a blunt spangle in the eighth inning. It's his only hit in the series.
- 2:15:12They talked about this weekend being a battle of Pohla and Parker for the MVP. No contest.
- 2:15:19I had Bibby with a full line and a pitch to Pohla.
- 2:15:30A strike call on the outside. You might have even just tipped the end of the batman to leave it to it.
- 2:15:37Parker's had five hits in the series. Pohla's had one. Parker has scored 101 times this year as a baller left side.
- 2:15:50Pohla has scored 77 times batting all year in the second spot with hitters like Manix, Wazinski-Hepner and Schmitt behind him.
- 2:16:00Here's a 1-1 to Pohla. There's a high fly ball, Schottel left shortstop to Behrasov and he's going to make the grab running away.
- 2:16:08Pohla's out and so are the Phillies. We have come down to one inning for the 1978 season.
- 2:16:16The Pirates will come to bat trying to stay alive for the 78 campaign. They're going to have to have their biggest ending of the year.
- 2:16:28The Phillies 10 the Pirate 4.
- 2:16:34Alright, it's the last mile for the 1978 Pirates. If they can come back, they will take it to the mile in the final day.
- 2:16:43They have battled from 11 and a half back. It's been an inspiring team. They've lived up to their 78 nickname, the Battle in Bucks.
- 2:16:53It would have been easy on the 12th of August to roll over and dive. They wouldn't do it.
- 2:16:59And they have brought it down to the next of the last day and Ed Ott, who is 1-2, will be leading it off against McGraw.
- 2:17:07I've played McGraw who has picked two innings and given up only one hit.
- 2:17:20Ed Ott with a fly ball to center, a walk and a single, three hits in the series and a van still clamoring for some pirate action.
- 2:17:30And there's a land drive single in the right field. Ed Ott hangs on a loop to start the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:17:38Second hit off McGraw, ninth hit of the game for Pittsburgh and Ceddo Gaston will make his first appearance as a pirate.
- 2:17:50He has been with Atlanta all year, running 229 with one homer and nine RBI's.
- 2:17:58Clarence Ceddo Gaston. And obviously the Bucks need a long ball. They've got a carve in as hard and as much as they can.
- 2:18:09The Phillies are leading 10-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:18:16Ceddo Gaston, right-hand pinch hitter. McGraw stretching, looking to first, here's the pitch.
- 2:18:22Through the hole, a base hit into left field. Gaston jumps on the first pitch. His first offense as a pirate is a base knock through the hole on the left side.
- 2:18:33That's it number 10 and the crowd now up and clamoring. They want that beginning. They want it to go to tomorrow.
- 2:18:41And Frank Gerveroz who was hit with today and four troops will be stepping in.
- 2:18:46Frankie is four for 12 in a series. That's two hits in each of the games last night.
- 2:18:52Now the job is to get things moving and get Old Mo back on our side.
- 2:18:59We came to this series with momentum. What a double header last night. Need to get him back.
- 2:19:05Stretchy, looking and McGraw's pitch to Gerveroz. He punts it. The pitch are coming over to get it.
- 2:19:11Now it's going to turn three. It's safe. The place is eluded. Nobody out.
- 2:19:20A fun single by Gerveroz. The pirates are still alive. It's the third straight hit off McGraw.
- 2:19:27An 11 pirate is for the off and on. And Omar Moreno will be the batter.
- 2:19:32The Philadelphia Phillies are leading by six.
- 2:19:36Two fifths of the beginning of one of the greatest comebacks in baseball history.
- 2:19:42Omar Moreno was locked once today. He's over three officially. He has struck out twice.
- 2:19:48Hit off the bird. Gaps in a second. Gerveroz is at first. Nobody out. The 28,000 are still here.
- 2:19:55They're still yelling. They're trying to get it going. They're trying to turn up the pirate path.
- 2:20:01But McGraw is still on the mound. It's the Moreno swinging a high pound for the second.
- 2:20:07The only play will be a forced play. The second and off scores. It's ten to five.
- 2:20:13Coming over to third was Gassman. Gerveroz was forced.
- 2:20:17Carroll from the ball scored that four to six. Moreno's at first with a fielder's choice.
- 2:20:22He gets credit for a run right at end. And here comes the Cobra.
- 2:20:27Parker today is one for four. He's got five hits in the series.
- 2:20:32This is one of those times when Parker would probably be trying to play long ball
- 2:20:39because we need him at a cluster. It's ten to five Philadelphia.
- 2:20:45Gassman third. Moreno first. The crowd's still wild about their pirates.
- 2:20:54Here's the runner going at first. Delvino's throw at the stolen base and that tie is the pirate record.
- 2:21:01Seventy stolen bases. That tie is the pirate record set last year by Saveras.
- 2:21:14Moreno ties the all-time pirate season high of 70 with that fifth.
- 2:21:18First bases empty. Two runners in scoring position with one out. The old one to Parker.
- 2:21:24A foul ball down the left side. It'll end up in the seats. Not quite to the bullpen area.
- 2:21:29And McGraw is in the out in front of Parker with two strikes. Will Robinson do up next?
- 2:21:38Philadelphia with ten runs and sixteen hits. The pirate five runs, eleven hits.
- 2:21:43They're trying to live up to them. Nickname in every way. No balls, two strikes.
- 2:21:50McGraw winding. The pitch to Parker. Swinging in a loopy five ball.
- 2:21:55Better drop. They've hit one run on score. They're going to wave Moreno.
- 2:21:59Why is it the plate he's in there? Extended subject. The ball gets away from Moon.
- 2:22:04That's Parker in the second base. Welcome to this loud now.
- 2:22:34Garcy shortstop Poe was a throwing error on his relay. The ball that got away from him.
- 2:22:44And Sammy Ozark has arrived at the mound. The Clark McGraw Magic has worn off.
- 2:22:54One, two, three, four hits in the inning. Will hits in the game for the pirate.
- 2:22:59Two more RBI's for Parker, who now has a hundred and seventeen.
- 2:23:05He's got sixteen RBI's against Philadelphia. And Ron Reid is being summoned from the right field bullpen.
- 2:23:13The score is ten to seven.
- 2:23:17Oh, you just got a good box and a tire. The seventy-eight pirate things.
- 2:23:23They've had their fix in their valleys. It would have been so easy to have said, well, in the middle of August this club can't do it.
- 2:23:32But they didn't do it. They just simply wouldn't quit.
- 2:23:37And now they're trying to keep it going till the final day. They've battled back with three runs here in the ninth inning.
- 2:23:44It's the fully seven of Pirate Summit as Ron Reid arrives at the mound and Clark McGraw makes a walk to the shower.
- 2:23:52That's how big it is that the Candy Man has gone to the bullpen.
- 2:23:57Here is Bill Robinson running to face Ron Reid.
- 2:24:00Robinson in this game has had a single and a double.
- 2:24:04Parker is the second base. If Robbie could play long ball in a field one run game,
- 2:24:09that way they're leading ten to seven with a run to a second and one out.
- 2:24:13Swinging the foul up here to the right side and a strike one.
- 2:24:17Ron Reid becomes there fourth pitcher of the afternoon. He's in relief with Clark McGraw.
- 2:24:24Reid gets the side. Here's the pitch. Swinging a slice up off Reid.
- 2:24:31Up off Smith's body the ball gets away into left field. Parker's going to score. It's ten to eight.
- 2:24:38That ball was absolutely hit like a bullet.
- 2:24:45It's a base hit and an RBI for Robinson. The ball faced into the Alps of Torps,
- 2:24:51gets up off Smith, pulled into left field, starts to lob out her. He represents the tying run.
- 2:24:57Holy Toledo. Hang on folks.
- 2:25:03The Fucco's are trying to do it here in the ninth inning. Billy's ten, Fyrus eight, four runs of score.
- 2:25:10Willie Stardew in a grand slam in the first inning. He's won for four in the game.
- 2:25:15It's a ten to eight game right now. Here's the pitch. Swinging a foul ball coming up this way,
- 2:25:21but lands on the screen and it's plate two to Stardew. Garner do a peck.
- 2:25:27The Philadelphia Phillies ten runs, sixteen hits to Fyrus, eight runs, thirteen hits.
- 2:25:33Five hits in this inning. Here's the pitch. Did he go after it? Yes he did and that is a sweet house.
- 2:25:44Now it's up to Bill Garner.
- 2:25:47Bill Garner today has walked, bounced the third single and popped up.
- 2:26:00The Philadelphia Phillies know they've been in a dog fight.
- 2:26:06And Bill Garner will be batting against Ron Reeves. He represents the tying run.
- 2:26:13Robinson at first base. The pitch swinging and fouling into the backstop.
- 2:26:18John Milner would be next. Garner trying to keep not only this inning alive and this game alive,
- 2:26:25but this season alive.
- 2:26:27The pitch.
- 2:26:36Low inside. One ball, one strike to Garner.
- 2:26:44Ron Reeves, the first-time he plays Robinson in his first short, he's off the pitch, rolled into left field, he got Parker off.
- 2:26:51Now there are two away. The one-one to Garner. Blings, and he misses it. One ball and two strikes.
- 2:27:02Philadelphia leading by two. Garner represents the tying run. The crowd trying to keep it going.
- 2:27:10Garner's trying to do the same thing. The one-two pitch.
- 2:27:14Outside of the maze. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:27:22Trapper trying to wear out Reid here.
- 2:27:27Bill Robinson at first base. Two away. Four runs are in. Trying to keep the uprising going. The two-two pitch.
- 2:27:35Low outside, ball free.
- 2:27:40All right. Bill Robinson will be ready to move at first.
- 2:27:45It's a full count. Two away. Bottom of the ninth inning. Philadelphia leading by two.
- 2:27:50The Phillies trying to hang on and end it. The Pirates trying to hang on and keep it from ending.
- 2:27:57All right. Robinson ready to run. Here's the pitch. A high bouncer. Foul. Third-eighth side.
- 2:28:03They'll wind Robbie up and bring him back to first.
- 2:28:06Three balls and two strikes.
- 2:28:13Bill Garner is rest right on his back.
- 2:28:21The 160 of Game of the Year.
- 2:28:26That's for the Pirates. The Phillies 161. The runner ready. Here he goes. Here's the pitch.
- 2:28:33A bouncer to short. Foul of flowers. And the Phillies have one seed.
- 2:28:43One of the greatest comebacks. And the Phillies are clamoring all over each other.
- 2:28:48They have won their division. But they won it by the skin of their collective feet.
- 2:28:54In the ninth inning for the Pirates, four runs on one, two, three, four, five hits.
- 2:29:00In the air as one man was left. And the Phillies have won their third straight division in a row.
- 2:29:08The Pirates put it on them right down to the next to the last day.
- 2:29:13But the Phillies have survived not only a great comeback, but they survived a great ninth inning comeback.
- 2:29:22And the final score. The Philadelphia Phillies 10-the Pittsburgh Pirates 8.
- 2:29:27All the good things wrapped up in one.
- 2:29:31Hey, TK, see the world of fun. All the good things that come in the dark.
- 2:29:38Hi everybody. We're back on the Tasty Cake Wrap-Up Show. I'm Andy Musler along with Chris Wheeler upstairs here.
- 2:29:43We're going to switch to the locker room. Rich Ashburn is talking with Mike Schmidt and Schmidty walking a rain out.
- 2:29:48And Warren Brewster is coming in to talk with Whitey. Let's join the locker room celebration.
- 2:29:52We're going to play in 60 situations all year. None hairier than this week.
- 2:29:57I feel super right now. It's great to have all this pressure off us now. We're ready.
- 2:30:02We played under pressure all year. We're used to it now. We're ready.
- 2:30:07You made the box last night. Today you came in. You only got in one inning, but it was a big inning.
- 2:30:12You got them out of there. It's time we only had a two run lead.
- 2:30:15And I guess you kind of wanted to get back in there.
- 2:30:18I did. I wanted to redeem myself bad. I really feel bad about last night.
- 2:30:22And I have to live with it. It happened. And it's over with today's a new day. Now we're celebrating.
- 2:30:26Good luck to you, Bruce. Nice going. Randy Lutz. You stole our gun. Nice, everybody.
- 2:30:33You know, you've always told me you could hit the box. You said before the ball game that you hit one over the center field fence.
- 2:30:40But I didn't think you were going to do it twice, Randy.
- 2:30:43That's new too, Rick, because I didn't think I was going to do it twice either. I'll say it was a once.
- 2:30:48That's the first time I've ever gone over center field fence, even in batting practice.
- 2:30:52So if I do it another time, I couldn't believe it.
- 2:30:54I give you credit for hanging in there. Stardale got you for that grand slammer.
- 2:30:57Looks like you made a bad pitch. And he nailed it, huh?
- 2:31:00I did. I made a very bad pitch. I was going too fast. I was right by him and I came back with a hanging break and ball.
- 2:31:04It was very dumb on my part. We didn't get down. We battled right back.
- 2:31:09You kept them in there with those home runs. You kept them close. Nice going.
- 2:31:13Thank you very much, Rick. Randy, good luck to you.
- 2:31:16I can't believe it.
- 2:31:19I'm going to ask you about that jack.
- 2:31:21I'm going to ask you about Randy's words.
- 2:31:25Alright, good job.
- 2:31:30Back in the club, I was at the three rivers stadium, Bob Boone standing right here.
- 2:31:37Boone, nobody said it'd be easy that last inning.
- 2:31:41How did you fix the well he started you? How did you strike him out?
- 2:31:44What were you thinking at that time? What are you thinking now?
- 2:31:46How am I supposed to know?
- 2:31:48I say, Harry, with Ron Ratesman, it's such a great job for us all year.
- 2:31:51You get into that inning. You can't try anything fast here.
- 2:31:54I was just going to go at him hard, try to move the ball around.
- 2:31:56I tried to give him one ball in, down and in.
- 2:31:59He's been swinging it down to the real tough pitch for him.
- 2:32:02Then I was going to go at him hard and Ron, he gets through a super hard fast ball.
- 2:32:07Up and away and Willie's going to be standing there and trying to hit it out.
- 2:32:11He's got to get a good pitch and it was a great pitch by Ratesman.
- 2:32:15So how does this feel this year compared to the last two?
- 2:32:18It's a fast ball. It was a struggle all the way for us.
- 2:32:22I think it's over with. It's been a long year and we're just starting to thank for this over.
- 2:32:28We're just starting to think about the playoffs.
- 2:32:32You've got to get the pire to a great deal of credit.
- 2:32:34They came a long way to get back at us and they were battling right to the end.
- 2:32:38It was something where we never really pressed.
- 2:32:42But it's something where you knew we had to win one.
- 2:32:45We knew it was tough here. They're playing great ball.
- 2:32:47They're all swinging hot bats and we just had to go out and do it.
- 2:32:50Especially the win where Randy gives up the grand slam in the first inning.
- 2:32:54And now we've got a battle back and I've got a great deal of character in our club.
- 2:32:58Randy Lurch getting into two big full runs and Bull coming through.
- 2:33:02It was a tremendous win for us. It's what I'll remember forever.
- 2:33:05It's very nice to have you here.
- 2:33:08The post following.
- 2:33:10Vice President and General Manager.
- 2:33:13Nobody's going to be easy.
- 2:33:15What were you thinking of the night setting?
- 2:33:19I don't know. I died a thousand times.
- 2:33:21I lost ten pounds the last two days.
- 2:33:24Well, you've got to give the Pirates credit. What a job they did.
- 2:33:27Do you think the Pirates, by coming out, have made the Phillies a better ball club?
- 2:33:31I think this has been a good lesson for us.
- 2:33:34I can't say enough about the Pirates. We played good ball last month.
- 2:33:38They just played super ball and they put on a great show.
- 2:33:42I think it was great for baseball. I hope it's great for the Phillies.
- 2:33:45There was a point in time in the fifth inning where the Phillies got second and third.
- 2:33:49They did not score. They came back in the next inning with Bulls home run
- 2:33:52and they had to beat them.
- 2:33:54I've never seen a big guy that emotional.
- 2:33:57Even he passes that.
- 2:33:59Oh, my ball! No for it!
- 2:34:04I'm showing bonesies.
- 2:34:07Very ball. Really, Captain Earth?
- 2:34:10The Phillies president and the owner is here.
- 2:34:12Really had them all the way.
- 2:34:14I think my heart stopped beating about ten times in that night setting.
- 2:34:18It's unbelievable.
- 2:34:20It really shows you the character of this ball club.
- 2:34:22I think maybe it's a blessing that the Pirates gave us a little ease.
- 2:34:26It's a real tribute to the Pirate organization, the job they have done
- 2:34:31because I think the last time we played them in August, they were 13 or 14 games.
- 2:34:36It's dying! I see ya! The Pirates, I see ya!
- 2:34:40Get out of the way!
- 2:34:42Bad Hawkeman being shot.
- 2:34:44The Pirates were 13 or 14 games out of first place and here they are today
- 2:34:49just knocking on the door and they really kept the heat on us
- 2:34:53and it is a tribute because I know it was a terrible disappointment
- 2:34:57last night when we lost the double header and these guys came back today
- 2:35:02and did a really fun job.
- 2:35:04It's ironic because the bats woke up.
- 2:35:07Our relief pitching has been so strong all year and then in the ninth inning
- 2:35:11the relief pitching really wasn't that effective other than Ron Reeves.
- 2:35:15They all did a hell of a job.
- 2:35:17Really, as far as your concerns, is this the sweetest of the great?
- 2:35:20Well, in some ways, yes.
- 2:35:22In spite of all the external difficulties surrounding the first one in 1976,
- 2:35:27I think that was the sweetest because that was the first time since 1950
- 2:35:32the fellas didn't ever really want anything.
- 2:35:34How do you feel going into the playoffs?
- 2:35:36Well, the Dodgers have played very well.
- 2:35:39We're going to have to get more hitting and we're going to beat the Dodgers.
- 2:35:42I think the pitching is going to be solid.
- 2:35:44It's been solid all year and the defense has been good too
- 2:35:47but we're going to have to get the hitting when it counts.
- 2:35:49Certainly today the whole free run homer and Ricky Hadner's free triple
- 2:35:55with a base throw today were the big hits.
- 2:35:57Really, you think you could have won it without the losing feeling.
- 2:36:01That was a key trait.
- 2:36:03I certainly do.
- 2:36:04I know we gave up, in my opinion, maybe one of the top three or four
- 2:36:07to leave pitchers as baseball and team Garber,
- 2:36:09but Dick Ruefman came back and we would have really been in trouble without him.
- 2:36:14Great win.
- 2:36:15Thank you, Harry.
- 2:36:16Really, Carpenter, President and Otis.
- 2:36:18We're back upstairs here on the broadcast booth
- 2:36:20and we're going to run down the scoreboard and then wrap up our tasty cake wrap-up show.
- 2:36:24As you can tell, the boys in the locker room are really happy about this one
- 2:36:28and Chris, I think, really in many ways the celebration down there
- 2:36:31is more genuine and spirited than the last two.
- 2:36:34I mean, the bills really came a lot closer to the end of the season
- 2:36:37before winning at this time than they did either 76 or 77.
- 2:36:40There's no doubt in my mind that the Phillies realized
- 2:36:44that they were looking to bullet right in the eye last night after that double header.
- 2:36:48And that this was a very, very hot baseball team they were playing here in Pittsburgh
- 2:36:51and they knew they had to try and somehow win a game
- 2:36:53because of the Pirates swept the Phillies this weekend.
- 2:36:55They weren't going to lose to the Reds on Monday.
- 2:36:57And they just showed you why the way they came at the Phillies in the ninth inning.
- 2:37:00So, yeah, I think it is.
- 2:37:01It looks like it.
- 2:37:02And I know when we get down there we'll probably get drowned again,
- 2:37:04but it sure is a lot of fun to get down and be in one of those babies.
- 2:37:07And I think it is more genuine.
- 2:37:08I think if it would have happened a week ago,
- 2:37:10it wouldn't have the feeling that it does today.
- 2:37:12But because of the problems and all the things that led up to it,
- 2:37:16you know, it has to be very, very satisfying.
- 2:37:18And they doused Whitey Asperin.
- 2:37:21Just walked in our broadcast booth.
- 2:37:23That stuff smells terrible.
- 2:37:25I hope it tastes better than it smells.
- 2:37:27Whitey says it does.
- 2:37:28Quick look at the scoreboard in the American League.
- 2:37:30New York beat Cleveland 7-0.
- 2:37:32Their magic number is 1 now.
- 2:37:34As the Reds talk speed Toronto 5-1.
- 2:37:36Both Ed Stigie-Roa and Dennis Eckersley became 20 game winners today.
- 2:37:40Baltimore and Detroit 2-2 at the end of 3 1 1 half.
- 2:37:43Milwaukee and Oakland just getting underway.
- 2:37:45And the National League, St. Louis over Montreal 6-1.
- 2:37:48And at the end of 7 innings, it was New York 4.
- 2:37:51And the Chicago Cubs 2.
- 2:37:53I believe a final has been posted in that ball game,
- 2:37:55but our ticker here in the booth has begun to garble.
- 2:37:57And we never got any report at all on Atlanta Cincinnati
- 2:38:00with Phil Negro pitching for his 20th in that
- 2:38:02when it could possibly be that that is a night game.
- 2:38:05All right, that's it for the Tasty Cake Wrap-Up Show.
- 2:38:07Speaking for Chris Wheeler, Harry Callis and Rick Cashburn.
- 2:38:10Andy Munster saying so long from Pittsburgh
- 2:38:12where the Phillies have indeed wrapped up.
- 2:38:15The National League Eastern Division title, the magic number is 0.
- 2:38:19We'll see you tomorrow on the Phillies baseball network.
- 2:38:22Hope you've enjoyed today's Tasty Cake Wrap-Up Show.
- 2:38:27Tune in after the next fill-up game
- 2:38:29when Tasty Cake once again wraps up facts and figures of the game.
- 2:38:32Interviews will start the game.
- 2:38:34And give you the inside scoop in the Phillies
- 2:38:36as the 1978 baseball season rolls along.
- 2:38:38Tasty Cake and the Phillies are all a good thing wrapped up in line.
- 2:38:41Tasty Cake in the world of fun.
- 2:38:44You probably won't see the back of any of these cars.
- 2:38:47Tasty Cake in the world of fun.
- 2:38:52Tasty Cake in the world of fun.
- 2:38:56Well, the 1978 season has come through a dramatic end
- 2:38:59and abruptly here, although there's another game to go tomorrow.
- 2:39:02The Phillies have wrapped up the East for the third straight year.
- 2:39:07They can believe easier knowing that they beat
- 2:39:10a rough, tough, tumble, rough-house pirate crew
- 2:39:13that put it on him from the middle of August right down to the day.
- 2:39:17And even in the ninth inning, the Phillies couldn't breathe easily.
- 2:39:21They thought they were going to waltz in.
- 2:39:23They were leading 10-4.
- 2:39:25Then a four-run pirate inning made it 10-8.
- 2:39:29And here are the totals.
- 2:39:32Four of the Phillies, 10-16 hits whenever they strand 10,
- 2:39:36lurched the winner, and although he gave up a grand slam in the first inning,
- 2:39:40he kept his own club in it by hitting two home runs.
- 2:39:44His record is 11-8.
- 2:39:46The winning RBI went to Hebner when he got the bases loaded double in the eighth inning.
- 2:39:52The pirates, 8-13 and 2-7, left Jackson the loser, 7-5.
- 2:39:57Home runs by lurcher player, Lozinski won that put him in front this day.
- 2:40:02Sargele had a grand slam in the first inning.
- 2:40:05And so, the Pittsburgh Pirates, who made one of the most scallant runs
- 2:40:09in the division title that's come since the divisions were put into existence,
- 2:40:14fell short on the next to the last day.
- 2:40:17But nobody that's done this pirate team,
- 2:40:20nobody that's connected with the pirates in any capacity,
- 2:40:24has to walk around with their head down today.
- 2:40:27This team just battled for all they were worth.
- 2:40:31They had won 24 in a row at home,
- 2:40:34but they lost this one and with it, a chance to win the division.
- 2:40:38So that's the story of it here.
- 2:40:40This crowd is limp, I want to tell you.
- 2:40:43They stayed on and they pulled and they pulled for the bucks to do it.
- 2:40:48They almost did it in the night.
- 2:40:50They had to tie a line at the plate, but couldn't pull it off,
- 2:40:54but oh how close they came, and oh how close it was.
- 2:40:58So the Phillies have won at 10-8, now tomorrow,
- 2:41:02as far as we know, Candleria will still pitch.
- 2:41:06Christensen has played it for them,
- 2:41:08but they might pitch somebody else because they know they've got to be in a playoff with the Dodgers.
- 2:41:14And now that the season has wound down to one remaining game,
- 2:41:19when we come back on the scoreboard,
- 2:41:21we're going to recap some of the interesting memories of this year.
- 2:41:24But I want to remind you that the broadcast tomorrow will be at 1.20, it's Friday,
- 2:41:30and we'll be on the air at 1.20.
- 2:41:32This game on a Saturday afternoon from Three Rivers was brought to you in part by Anheiser Boys Brewers,
- 2:41:37the Budweiser, the King of Bears.
- 2:41:39There's no better way to relax than with the easy taste of Budweiser.
- 2:41:43By the folks at Chevrolet along with Chevrolet dealers coast to coast,
- 2:41:46we invite you to come on in and see a winning lineup of cars for $19.79.
