- 0:27Speaker 1: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Kilowatts of power. What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I am Brian and I am joined today by the
- 1:00Speaker 1: magic of the internet by Sam.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Haha, you are back.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Sucker got lured in that.
- 1:27Speaker 5: Happens pretty regular i mean you're a default co-host now
- 1:31Speaker 5: whether you like it or not so fine it's fine
- 1:34Speaker 5: it's only taken you know 17 years.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Yeah yeah it gives me purpose and direction in life
- 1:40Speaker 1: brian so i appreciate it it's.
- 1:42Speaker 5: Good that you know have something to do for the
- 1:44Speaker 5: day you know otherwise what the hell are either of
- 1:48Speaker 5: us doing really.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I'm just I got my cork board and my my
- 1:52Speaker 1: ball of yarn and uh you know that I'm out
- 1:56Speaker 1: of yarn right now so I was going like what
- 1:57Speaker 1: am I going to do this Sunday.
- 1:58Speaker 5: I don't doubt that actually that actually seems about right yeah.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yeah yeah so I was going like man maybe Brian's
- 2:07Speaker 1: going to do an episode and so yeah lo and
- 2:09Speaker 1: behold so yeah I'll go to I'll go to Michael's
- 2:12Speaker 1: pick up some more yarn Monday tomorrow I'll go do
- 2:15Speaker 1: that so i'm i am open open schedule now so.
- 2:20Speaker 5: That's that's good i'm sure that will leave us many
- 2:23Speaker 5: things to discuss because as we got into i was
- 2:26Speaker 5: like we don't need much motivation we don't need much
- 2:29Speaker 5: direction all we need is to get us together in
- 2:32Speaker 5: some way shape or form and then be like all
- 2:35Speaker 5: right start yammering about something and then we will and
- 2:38Speaker 5: hours will go by so That's it. I figure even
- 2:41Speaker 5: if we just talk about, hey, we've seen some things lately,
- 2:44Speaker 5: it will definitely take over our lives.
- 2:47Speaker 1: That's pretty much it, man. That's pretty much it. Yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 1: it's been a while since... It's been several weeks since
- 2:54Speaker 1: I've podcasted. And I was looking to fall off the wagon.
- 2:58Speaker 5: I mean, how can you get by without it? I mean,
- 3:01Speaker 5: at this point, I assume everyone goes through that because
- 3:04Speaker 5: everyone seems to have a podcast. So I assume we
- 3:07Speaker 5: all have that, you know.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I mean, yeah, yeah. Don't tell my sponsor
- 3:11Speaker 1: that I've fallen off the wagon. I'm podcasting today.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Oh, that's what it's going to come to. You'll be
- 3:19Speaker 5: calling them up going, I just want to talk about.
- 3:23Speaker 5: I gotta get on there, man.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I gotta get on there. I gotta talk about Star Trek.
- 3:29Speaker 5: I'm typing in my Zoom password right now. Don't do it,
- 3:34Speaker 5: don't do it.
- 3:36Speaker 1: No kidding. No, it's tough. I had to leave the
- 3:40Speaker 1: house this morning. week and i had to go into
- 3:43Speaker 1: the office and like people with people and i know
- 3:46Speaker 1: it was probably people who go like ah fuck you
- 3:49Speaker 1: i go in every day and you know and everything
- 3:51Speaker 1: you know it's like you know when you know it's
- 3:53Speaker 1: like but you gotta understand man it's uh you lose
- 3:57Speaker 1: that ability after a while.
- 3:59Speaker 7: To function to function as a human being as a
- 4:02Speaker 7: human being amongst people all right and uh it's been
- 4:07Speaker 7: Since COVID, so it's been, we're on year six now
- 4:10Speaker 7: and everything of just leaving the house only when necessary.
- 4:15Speaker 1: And so, yeah, you know, you get out there and
- 4:18Speaker 1: it's like, it's not like podcasting because I can say,
- 4:23Speaker 1: talking about movies is like the safe space. Talking about
- 4:26Speaker 1: life feels like being eviscerated, you know? I mean, just.
- 4:33Speaker 5: See, then you become my version, which is I just
- 4:35Speaker 5: kind of don't. I realize now like it's weird that
- 4:41Speaker 5: like in the real world I just don't even interact
- 4:44Speaker 5: for the most part certainly not with normal people like
- 4:49Speaker 5: people I know but like The majority of the time
- 4:52Speaker 5: I see people I know now, I'm talking on a podcast. So, like,
- 4:56Speaker 5: the only time I interact with people that I, like, like,
- 4:59Speaker 5: you know, and deal with on a regular basis of
- 5:02Speaker 5: my own accord is podcasting. So, the rest of the
- 5:05Speaker 5: time I just have to deal with other people. And
- 5:08Speaker 5: most of the time I actively don't. Like, I don't
- 5:10Speaker 5: even think about it anymore.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I just don't.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Like, I have my stuff to do and I do it.
- 5:14Speaker 5: And I try not to talk to the other weirdos
- 5:16Speaker 5: out there, and I'm just like, whatever. So, yeah, this
- 5:20Speaker 5: is the only time I communicate is when I'm on
- 5:22Speaker 5: the show.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I like it. You know the rules. We're going to
- 5:28Speaker 1: keep it friendly. We're not going to veer into politics,
- 5:30Speaker 1: or we're not going to veer into anything. We're going
- 5:33Speaker 1: to talk about movies. And if we want to talk
- 5:35Speaker 1: about other things, fine.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Wait, is this on your show or in your real world?
- 5:41Speaker 1: No, when I'm podcasting.
- 5:43Speaker 5: I was going to say, because the dangerous area for
- 5:46Speaker 5: me is when people out there want to talk about movies.
- 5:49Speaker 5: I'm like, oh no, you're not... You're not equipped to
- 5:53Speaker 5: have a normal conversation on the level of dorks on
- 5:57Speaker 5: the internet. Like I'm only used to dorks on the
- 6:00Speaker 5: internet version. I don't know how to interact with regular
- 6:03Speaker 5: people when they want to talk about movies because it's
- 6:06Speaker 5: worse if they know I at least you like movies
- 6:09Speaker 5: is the thing I'll get. And I'll be like, Oh God,
- 6:11Speaker 5: what's coming?
- 6:12Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 6:13Speaker 5: In the last, the most weird, mundane, mainstream bullshit. And
- 6:17Speaker 5: I'm just like, I don't even want to get into
- 6:20Speaker 5: it with you. I'm just like, so again, even when
- 6:22Speaker 5: it's about something I do want to talk about, I
- 6:25Speaker 5: try not to engage because I know it's not going
- 6:27Speaker 5: to go well. I'm like, no, no, no. You tell
- 6:30Speaker 5: me what you thought. I like sort of sometimes hearing
- 6:33Speaker 5: the weird things that normal people say about movies. Right.
- 6:36Speaker 5: But other than that, I don't think you want to
- 6:38Speaker 5: hear what I have to say. And you don't have
- 6:40Speaker 5: a spare hour.
- 6:40Speaker 1: You're right. That's it.
- 6:42Speaker 5: That's it.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I can't really get into my feelings on this.
- 6:44Speaker 5: All right? I will go down a rabbit hole and
- 6:47Speaker 5: you will not return.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely. You will just eventually walk
- 6:52Speaker 1: away from the cube and everything. And I will still
- 6:55Speaker 1: be mid-thought here.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Rambling. Angry about something.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:59Speaker 5: You know what they did?
- 7:01Speaker 1: Right, right, right, right, right, right.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Well, you become like... You try not to be... I
- 7:10Speaker 1: used to ask people on the team I'm on, hey,
- 7:16Speaker 1: what your favorite movie was when they joined the team.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And then I realized I got to stop doing that
- 7:23Speaker 1: because I can't help but to make fun of them.
- 7:26Speaker 5: So you're one of those guys. No, I know. I
- 7:33Speaker 5: do this. I'm like, well, again, I just hear what
- 7:36Speaker 5: people say about movies that I like and they just
- 7:39Speaker 5: don't get it because it's like, it takes a little
- 7:42Speaker 5: bit of thought maybe. And I'm like, not that I,
- 7:45Speaker 5: I'm mostly brain dead, but like I at least like
- 7:49Speaker 5: engage in movies and I ask something of at least
- 7:52Speaker 5: some of the movies I watch. And like most people
- 7:55Speaker 5: do not want that at all. So like they have
- 7:57Speaker 5: like anything that involves like some sort of taste or
- 8:00Speaker 5: a little bit of thought. They will just annihilate it.
- 8:03Speaker 5: And I'm just like, oh, God, I can't. I can't
- 8:06Speaker 5: with you.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I just don't want to start. This always happens. I
- 8:10Speaker 1: go like, I'll watch a movie. Now that I'm in,
- 8:12Speaker 1: you know, isolation and everything, I'm like, I'll watch a
- 8:15Speaker 1: movie and I'll go like, man, I really like that.
- 8:17Speaker 1: And then I'll go out into the world and go, oh,
- 8:18Speaker 1: I love that. And they'll go like, what's wrong with you?
- 8:21Speaker 1: That's the worst movie. That is the worst movie ever made.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And I go like, yeah. And then when I show
- 8:27Speaker 1: somebody like a movie I love, they go like, this
- 8:29Speaker 1: is the worst movie I've ever seen. You know, and
- 8:32Speaker 1: I go like, okay, I think I've just gone off road.
- 8:36Speaker 1: I'm kind of like Jeremiah Johnson now and everything, you know,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and like I've just got very particular taste. And it's just,
- 8:45Speaker 1: I don't know. But I'm finding, I'm sorry, Brian, I'm
- 8:48Speaker 1: ranting and everything.
- 8:50Speaker 5: That's what this is for.
- 8:51Speaker 3: That's the whole, as we just said, that's the point.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Right, right. It's lancing the boil. I have found, this
- 8:58Speaker 1: is what, this is what we can talk about. So
- 9:01Speaker 1: in the past, yes, I probably was probably an asshole
- 9:04Speaker 1: if I disagreed with you about your movie. Or I
- 9:07Speaker 1: didn't even see it as that. I go like, look,
- 9:09Speaker 1: I'm not going to pretend to like it. I'm just
- 9:12Speaker 1: going to go like, hey, this is what I think
- 9:14Speaker 1: about it.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Again, that's the podcasting world. You're supposed to engage in
- 9:17Speaker 5: a conversation. Like I always say that. Like when we
- 9:20Speaker 5: just had the horror club and it was like one
- 9:22Speaker 5: of the three of us liked the thing that the
- 9:24Speaker 5: other two did.
- 9:25Speaker 3: I was like, good.
- 9:26Speaker 5: We have some counterbalance.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Like I want.
- 9:28Speaker 5: Somebody to have a different opinion. So, like, yeah, we
- 9:30Speaker 5: want that on, you know, in podcast mode. Like, you
- 9:33Speaker 5: want that. It's a conversation.
- 9:35Speaker 1: It's a critical discussion about a movie or the feeling.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Which is what it should be. Again, I don't know
- 9:42Speaker 5: how to do it any other way. Like, other people just, like...
- 9:45Speaker 5: Make a one sentence statement and they're done. Then that
- 9:49Speaker 5: was my thought on that movie. And you're like, whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 9:52Speaker 5: you haven't even given me the tagline for the.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Movie, man.
- 9:55Speaker 5: You're going to have to dig into this.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 9:57Speaker 5: And they're just like, what are you talking? No, I already.
- 10:00Speaker 5: told you. I liked it. The end. I'm like, what?
- 10:03Speaker 5: But no. I don't know how to process normal people anymore.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Because I am not normal.
- 10:08Speaker 5: I realize that.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Well, there's like, OK. So I can get real snobby
- 10:12Speaker 1: and real Reddit-y. and everything about some shit you know
- 10:20Speaker 1: uh you know it's like it's like you go like
- 10:22Speaker 1: okay you know it's like when you used to watch
- 10:25Speaker 1: movies on vhs on your little tube screen you know
- 10:28Speaker 1: you know a 10-inch screen and you go like oh
- 10:30Speaker 1: that was a great movie and then you realize when
- 10:32Speaker 1: you saw it in widescreen you had never seen that
- 10:34Speaker 1: movie and another war it's a whole nother movie and
- 10:37Speaker 1: then you watch it projected and then you realize i
- 10:41Speaker 1: have never seen this movie you know And then, you know,
- 10:45Speaker 1: each format changes your opinion on it, you know?
- 10:49Speaker 5: Again, you couldn't describe any of this to a regular person,
- 10:53Speaker 5: and they wouldn't know what. No, you've seen that one.
- 10:54Speaker 5: What are you talking about? Like, no, I already saw
- 10:56Speaker 5: that movie. Like, again, this is a kind of thing
- 11:00Speaker 5: that only happens in the brain of a geek who
- 11:02Speaker 5: gets into this stuff. So, again, it's different worlds, man.
- 11:06Speaker 5: So continue on. I just like, as you're describing, I'm like, see,
- 11:11Speaker 5: even that won't make sense to somebody who doesn't live
- 11:13Speaker 5: this life.
- 11:15Speaker 1: So you go into, so you go to somebody's house
- 11:17Speaker 1: and you go like, Hey, Hey, we're going to watch
- 11:19Speaker 1: a movie. And they, they've got like a screen TV
- 11:21Speaker 1: and you go like, Oh, that's cool. You know, but
- 11:23Speaker 1: then they're watching it on like the real motion, you know,
- 11:26Speaker 1: and you go like, you, you're like, we can't watch
- 11:29Speaker 1: this movie like this. I've got to now go into
- 11:33Speaker 1: your TV settings and fix this because this will be
- 11:37Speaker 1: a waste of everybody's time to watch it. They're like,
- 11:39Speaker 1: what are you talking about? The picture's fine. It's the
- 11:42Speaker 1: movement of the image is driving me.
- 11:45Speaker 5: I'm not watching the Super Bowl. It doesn't need to
- 11:47Speaker 5: look like this. We're not– it's not a drone shot
- 11:51Speaker 5: of somebody completing a pass. Like what do you– why
- 11:54Speaker 5: does it look like this? How do you have that?
- 11:57Speaker 5: I haven't bought a TV in so long. Like mine
- 12:00Speaker 5: is an inherited TV that I got that I'm like
- 12:03Speaker 5: it's fine. It looks good. Like I'm so not picky
- 12:05Speaker 5: about technical stuff. Like I like the specifics of like
- 12:08Speaker 5: obviously I want widescreen. But like– Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 5: all the other stuff that people get specific about when
- 12:13Speaker 5: they buy theirs to watch the super bowl and i'm
- 12:15Speaker 5: like yeah whatever i don't care that seems like you
- 12:17Speaker 5: paid a lot for it so whatever i just don't
- 12:20Speaker 5: do that so mine doesn't even have those i just
- 12:22Speaker 5: like push play and it comes out and it doesn't
- 12:26Speaker 5: look weird because i don't think it was made when
- 12:28Speaker 5: you still had those they hadn't invented that yet I.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Think maybe that's been phased out a little bit, but
- 12:34Speaker 1: it used to be where everything was put on the set.
- 12:37Speaker 5: It was such a big thing for a while. That
- 12:40Speaker 5: was the selling point.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Exactly. So anyway, number one, you go from tube to
- 12:47Speaker 1: widescreen to a widescreen presentation and then to a flat
- 12:54Speaker 1: screen TV. And you go like, oh, okay, now I'm
- 12:56Speaker 1: watching a movie. And then you go, but then, but
- 12:58Speaker 1: then you go like, really, you haven't seen it until
- 13:00Speaker 1: it's been projected. Cause then it's like, not like look,
- 13:03Speaker 1: staring into a lamp. You're like seeing a, you're like
- 13:07Speaker 1: seeing a reflection off a wall, which is like easier
- 13:11Speaker 1: on the way maybe movies are supposed to be watched.
- 13:14Speaker 1: And then, you know, and then really probably a lot
- 13:17Speaker 1: of people would say you haven't seen it until you've
- 13:19Speaker 1: seen it with like the right crowd and a movie theater.
- 13:22Speaker 1: But then, The last thing is you really haven't seen
- 13:27Speaker 1: a movie until you've talked about it for three hours
- 13:29Speaker 1: on a podcast.
- 13:30Speaker 5: Okay, well that... I'm going to say yes on that
- 13:34Speaker 5: last one. I don't know how to function otherwise. But yeah,
- 13:38Speaker 5: I was thinking of the settings as you were like,
- 13:40Speaker 5: we haven't really seen a movie until you've experienced it
- 13:43Speaker 5: with a live orchestra as well. I wanted to see
- 13:45Speaker 5: how much further you could go on the steps, these
- 13:48Speaker 5: stair steps of like, well, unless you've seen it with
- 13:52Speaker 5: a score performed live in front of you, you've not
- 13:55Speaker 5: seen the movie, obviously.
- 13:57Speaker 1: But I would say watching, I have seen Metropolis with
- 14:00Speaker 1: like a live, not an orchestra, but like they were
- 14:05Speaker 1: playing pots and pans and like a junk orchestra. And
- 14:10Speaker 1: it was like a totally different experience. I go like,
- 14:12Speaker 1: this is like the best damn thing ever, you know?
- 14:15Speaker 1: And then, you know, a lot of movies like I find,
- 14:18Speaker 1: you know, are the movie is, Most movies are pretty
- 14:24Speaker 1: amazing if you just watch it with the sound off
- 14:28Speaker 1: and your own music.
- 14:29Speaker 5: You've told me this.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Oh, my God. It's so sad.
- 14:31Speaker 5: This is your plan.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Dude.
- 14:33Speaker 5: You do this with everything now, don't you?
- 14:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I kind of do. You kind of run it
- 14:37Speaker 1: through that test, and you put on something. If you
- 14:41Speaker 1: put it in some movies, black and white with the
- 14:43Speaker 1: sound off, everything is so much better. And so, basically,
- 14:47Speaker 1: I hear how crazy this sounds.
- 14:51Speaker 5: Only to your children. Because I know they look at
- 14:54Speaker 5: you and go, what the hell are you doing now, Dad?
- 14:56Speaker 5: You're like, no, this is great.
- 14:58Speaker 8: Watch.
- 14:59Speaker 5: This is the way you really get it. Yeah, never mind.
- 15:02Speaker 5: I'll be in the other room doing something useful.
- 15:06Speaker 1: No, it's sad. I say it out loud. I go like, oh,
- 15:08Speaker 1: my God. Yeah, I got to get out of the
- 15:11Speaker 1: house more.
- 15:13Speaker 5: And they're like, please do.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Please leave. Do us all a favor.
- 15:18Speaker 5: First of all, get dressed. Then go out into the world.
- 15:21Speaker 1: You've been in your pajamas for two months.
- 15:24Speaker 5: For the love of God, hose down. And go out
- 15:27Speaker 5: into the world.
- 15:27Speaker 1: For the love of God. Yeah, then you go out
- 15:30Speaker 1: on the road. I was like, all right, I'll go
- 15:31Speaker 1: get a haircut. And then you go sit down and
- 15:33Speaker 1: you see yourself in the mirror and your hair is
- 15:36Speaker 1: like insane and you've got like this long... You look
- 15:40Speaker 1: like Howard Hughes and everything. You've got the ropey fingernails
- 15:44Speaker 1: and everything. And you're going like, what the hell? Where
- 15:47Speaker 1: have I been?
- 15:48Speaker 5: I wondered where those Kleenex boxes went. Now I know.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Like....
- 15:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah. Saving jars of my own urine is not normal. And, uh,
- 16:01Speaker 1: I probably, yeah, it's good. It's good to have people
- 16:05Speaker 1: over occasionally, you know, so they can sort of, you know,
- 16:08Speaker 1: gut check you, you know, and everything.
- 16:10Speaker 5: That is really the only time I like move any
- 16:13Speaker 5: of this like mess out of the way. Like I
- 16:15Speaker 5: have to, that's why it got so bad. I had
- 16:18Speaker 5: to shift things every time we would have to record in,
- 16:21Speaker 5: in my own home. I'm like, I can't, there's too
- 16:23Speaker 5: much to move. I can't do it anymore. Like, yeah,
- 16:26Speaker 5: it's just too much stuff in the way. I have
- 16:28Speaker 5: too many things. No surprise there. Accumulating of things is
- 16:34Speaker 5: what I do.
- 16:35Speaker 1: No, no, no, dude. I was like, I was talking
- 16:38Speaker 1: to somebody the other day and, uh, crazy.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 16:41Speaker 5: But, um, not in the real world, obviously.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:45Speaker 1: No, no. I left the house. I saw some people
- 16:48Speaker 1: I used to work at the movie theater with, and
- 16:49Speaker 1: they brought this guy who I hadn't seen in a while.
- 16:52Speaker 1: He used to work at the movie theater was, and, uh,
- 16:56Speaker 1: He said, hey, I've still got a piece of paper
- 17:00Speaker 1: that you wrote down like some movies for me to
- 17:04Speaker 1: recommend because I wasn't into horror movies. So I wrote
- 17:07Speaker 1: down these horror movies for him to check out. I've
- 17:09Speaker 1: still got that sheet of paper. And I was like
- 17:11Speaker 1: going like, you guys, that piece of paper is probably
- 17:14Speaker 1: 20 years old. All right. But I go like, dude.
- 17:18Speaker 1: I totally know where you're coming from because I've got
- 17:21Speaker 1: scraps of paper that I've got random bits of information
- 17:25Speaker 1: that I can't get rid of either. And it's weird, right?
- 17:28Speaker 1: It's weird.
- 17:29Speaker 5: First of all, what's paper? at this point we're getting
- 17:34Speaker 5: to where you know the generations ahead will not even
- 17:38Speaker 5: know what as someone who has like stacks of paper
- 17:42Speaker 5: everywhere and I do sort through things like I literally
- 17:45Speaker 5: I've moved stuff around here and found stacks that are
- 17:49Speaker 5: still in the stack they were when I put them
- 17:51Speaker 5: in this box from 25 years ago and I'm just
- 17:54Speaker 5: like huh look at this and I will find the
- 17:57Speaker 5: weirdest stuff and I'm like I wrote this down 25
- 18:01Speaker 5: years ago and here I am now going, Oh yeah,
- 18:04Speaker 5: I still need to do that.
- 18:05Speaker 1: But it is weird.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Like I said, that's why I can't move.
- 18:12Speaker 1: It's like, I go like, why did I imbue like
- 18:15Speaker 1: a part of my soul into this thing that I
- 18:18Speaker 1: feel like if I throw it away, I will, I will,
- 18:23Speaker 1: I'm throwing away a part of me, you know, and everything.
- 18:26Speaker 1: It's so weird, you know?
- 18:28Speaker 5: But it's also a physical thing. Whereas now any kids
- 18:31Speaker 5: just going to like make a note on their phone
- 18:33Speaker 5: and like, you know, they won't physically be dragging a
- 18:36Speaker 5: piece of paper around for the rest of their life.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:41Speaker 1: All their books will be on Kindles and all their
- 18:43Speaker 1: movies will be on the cloud or like, or they
- 18:46Speaker 1: don't even own those. And, and all their writing is
- 18:49Speaker 1: just like in the app. And so, yeah, I mean,
- 18:52Speaker 1: that's good for.
- 18:53Speaker 5: Them, but it's, It's a different way to process everything,
- 18:57Speaker 5: I guess.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Yeah. But when you walk into somebody's house, though, I mean,
- 19:02Speaker 1: you'll go like, oh, this person. I mean, when you
- 19:06Speaker 1: walk into somebody's house and they're obviously, you know, collecting
- 19:10Speaker 1: a museum of the random thoughts that they have since like,
- 19:14Speaker 1: you know, for the last 30 years. You go like, okay, yeah,
- 19:16Speaker 1: this person's probably a little deranged. Or this person, you know.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Okay, it sounded like my place when you started. I
- 19:23Speaker 5: was like, oh, yeah.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Like, oh, oh.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Okay.
- 19:27Speaker 5: You're right. I'm not disagreeing. But I didn't realize what
- 19:30Speaker 5: road we were heading down as I was like, yeah.
- 19:32Speaker 5: I'm in it right now. I'm looking at all the, oh.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Okay, maybe I'm a little deranged. That's a fact. No,
- 19:37Speaker 1: it's fine.
- 19:38Speaker 5: Anyway.
- 19:39Speaker 1: But now you're not going to know. You're not going
- 19:41Speaker 1: to know. You're going to have to like look at
- 19:43Speaker 1: somebody's hard drive to know how deranged they are.
- 19:45Speaker 5: Well, I mean, because everybody's going to, that's my favorite
- 19:47Speaker 5: is when you get to like future world. Like even some, as, like,
- 19:50Speaker 5: generalized as, like, Star Trek. Like, look at Next Generation. Like,
- 19:54Speaker 5: their quarters are just, like, walls.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:56Speaker 5: And, like, maybe if they're super cool, they'll have, like,
- 19:59Speaker 5: something hanging over there or, like, a sculpture of, like,
- 20:02Speaker 5: a spaceship or I don't know. Like, it's so minimalist
- 20:05Speaker 5: that I'm just like, I mean– I guess. Like, I
- 20:09Speaker 5: don't know. Like, I just want the stuff. Like, I
- 20:12Speaker 5: need the stuff, man. Like, I'm Jones is for the stuff. So, like,
- 20:17Speaker 5: when I see that, I'm like, I appreciate it, like, as, like,
- 20:21Speaker 5: an aesthetic. Like, it looks great when I see someplace
- 20:25Speaker 5: that's super cool and minimalist and some sort of modern architecture.
- 20:29Speaker 5: And I'm like, I like this, like, look that you have.
- 20:31Speaker 1: But.
- 20:32Speaker 5: Where's all your stuff?
- 20:34Speaker 1: Where's the texture?
- 20:35Speaker 3: I don't know how to process it because I need
- 20:37Speaker 3: the stuff, man.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I need the sensory input, you know?
- 20:42Speaker 1: I mean, right now.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Overload is mine.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I mean, right. Right now, I'm looking at the walls
- 20:46Speaker 1: around me, and I'm taking everything off the walls. So
- 20:48Speaker 1: I am just looking at bare walls right now.
- 20:50Speaker 8: You're losing it.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, because I'm just looking. I'm trying to rebuild
- 20:54Speaker 1: and everything. I'm trying to, I mean, you know. I've
- 20:56Speaker 1: shaken the Etch-A-Sketch and I'm slowly rebuilding back, you know,
- 21:00Speaker 1: layers of patina, you know.
- 21:02Speaker 5: I just have to move one thing out of the
- 21:04Speaker 5: way to put another. I just, I just literally like
- 21:08Speaker 5: I bought a piece of art because I'm a dork
- 21:10Speaker 5: and I like physical art. Right. And I, I, the
- 21:14Speaker 5: last time I did this, I had to find a
- 21:15Speaker 5: place to put that one. Well, now it's like I
- 21:18Speaker 5: found this thing that I– it literally is a painting
- 21:21Speaker 5: I saw like 20 some odd years ago that a
- 21:23Speaker 5: person that I knew, a friend of mine painted. And
- 21:26Speaker 5: I hadn't seen it forever. And they did a show
- 21:28Speaker 5: and it was still there. I was like, oh, this
- 21:30Speaker 5: was like my favorite thing that you did. It's amazing.
- 21:33Speaker 5: So I didn't have money for it.
- 21:34Speaker 1: But screw it.
- 21:35Speaker 5: I went in the hole. And I'm like, so now
- 21:36Speaker 5: I have that. Well, I had to move the last
- 21:38Speaker 5: painting that I bought. So I'm like– I have to
- 21:41Speaker 5: move my geek thing out of the way to put
- 21:43Speaker 5: a new geek thing on top of where that one was.
- 21:45Speaker 5: And then I have to figure out where to put
- 21:47Speaker 5: the old one. Cause I don't want to get rid
- 21:48Speaker 5: of that for God's sakes. So like, it's just stockpiling
- 21:51Speaker 5: and moving my geek things and then putting the new
- 21:54Speaker 5: thing in that spot till I find another thing that
- 21:56Speaker 5: it's like, it's so out of control. The amount of
- 21:59Speaker 5: stuff that I have.
- 22:01Speaker 1: It's madness. It's madness. And now, so I'm going to say,
- 22:05Speaker 1: say something that's going to make me sound like a,
- 22:07Speaker 1: like a, an Anne Rice vampire, but it's like, uh,
- 22:10Speaker 1: the weight of the years and the weight of the
- 22:15Speaker 1: memories starts really accumulating around this time where you've now
- 22:22Speaker 1: got 30 years of this shit, you know, 40 years
- 22:26Speaker 1: of this, you know, I mean, you know, if I, yeah,
- 22:30Speaker 1: I mean, so, you know, I've got stuff from, you know,
- 22:33Speaker 1: high school, you know, in a, in a file cabinet,
- 22:35Speaker 1: you know, and, uh, And I'm going like, you know,
- 22:40Speaker 1: and then, you know, my mother is the same way.
- 22:44Speaker 1: So she's probably got stuff from, you know, my kindergarten
- 22:47Speaker 1: that I probably popped together with popsicle sticks and a Rubbermaid.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I mean, this sickness just goes on, you know.
- 22:55Speaker 5: It's amazing. Like I said before, sometimes because I'll just
- 22:59Speaker 5: be moving over the years and I'll throw it in
- 23:01Speaker 5: a plastic tub and it'll get stuck somewhere for years.
- 23:04Speaker 5: it will be in the stack it was when I
- 23:06Speaker 5: threw it together 25 years ago. So when I pull
- 23:10Speaker 5: it out, it's almost like carbon dating. I'm pulling stuff
- 23:13Speaker 5: out in the order it was 25 years ago. You're
- 23:16Speaker 5: looking at a time capsule, whether you realized it or not.
- 23:19Speaker 5: But like these things that I stack together, were sitting
- 23:22Speaker 5: on my desk 25 years ago, and now here they are. Obviously,
- 23:25Speaker 5: they were very important, and I definitely needed them because
- 23:28Speaker 5: here they are 25 years later. And I'm just like,
- 23:31Speaker 5: this is the way that it was. These things that
- 23:35Speaker 5: I grouped together were grouped together sitting in this pile
- 23:38Speaker 5: that long ago. Like, it's so weird when I find
- 23:41Speaker 5: stuff because it's all from the same era, more or less,
- 23:43Speaker 5: when I threw it all in this one box. and
- 23:45Speaker 5: i'll pull it out and be like oh yeah this
- 23:47Speaker 5: and oh yeah i was doing this then and i
- 23:48Speaker 5: was like all of these weird memories get crammed into
- 23:51Speaker 5: my brain because i'm like finding all these pieces of
- 23:54Speaker 5: this puzzle that happened decades.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Ago right right no it's like uh yeah it's almost
- 24:01Speaker 1: like uh living in a not a a dwelling space
- 24:06Speaker 1: a living is more like you're living in a in
- 24:08Speaker 1: a in a And whatchamacallit, like an archaeological dig.
- 24:13Speaker 3: You know?
- 24:14Speaker 5: The archaeological dig that is our geek brain.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:18Speaker 5: When you're like, these are all the things that you like, right? Well,
- 24:20Speaker 5: let's go back 20 years and look at what they
- 24:22Speaker 5: look like then. It's pretty much the same, but it's
- 24:26Speaker 5: different stuff because I've accumulated so much new stuff on
- 24:28Speaker 5: top of it. Right, right.
- 24:30Speaker 1: No, it's weird. It's just heavy. It's just heavy. It's
- 24:34Speaker 1: a lot. And I'm going like, I don't know. You know,
- 24:38Speaker 1: as I was saying, like before we started recording, it
- 24:40Speaker 1: was just like, you know, at a certain point, your
- 24:42Speaker 1: hard drive is just full, you know, and you just
- 24:45Speaker 1: can't put anything else in here because it is also,
- 24:48Speaker 1: you know, I'm just going like, you know, for me,
- 24:52Speaker 1: it was always like memory. It's like, I got to
- 24:54Speaker 1: remember these things, you know, or they didn't happen. If
- 24:58Speaker 1: I don't remember it, it never happened.
- 25:00Speaker 5: I get that.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:02Speaker 5: It is part of that for me because it will
- 25:05Speaker 5: bring up such specific things. time and place in my
- 25:09Speaker 5: life and I'm just like this is weird and like
- 25:11Speaker 5: I don't know that I would have gotten to this
- 25:12Speaker 5: place again without this thing that I just picked up
- 25:15Speaker 5: like it really is like a or even photos like
- 25:18Speaker 5: photos you can like project yourself into that moment decades
- 25:22Speaker 5: ago when somebody took this shot and it's like oh
- 25:24Speaker 5: if I don't have these I don't necessarily access this
- 25:27Speaker 5: specific version of the memory like it really is like
- 25:31Speaker 5: a little portal in time that you're like oh look
- 25:33Speaker 5: at this look at this thing that I found that
- 25:35Speaker 5: takes you back into the past it's It's amazing.
- 25:38Speaker 1: And I think, yeah, right, right. And I go like,
- 25:41Speaker 1: I guess because I'm just kind of scatterbrained, I just
- 25:43Speaker 1: kind of go from like one moment to another. And
- 25:48Speaker 1: so when I like see something that grounds me to,
- 25:52Speaker 1: you know, an actual reality from the past, I go like, oh.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I did exist in this moment and interacted with the
- 26:02Speaker 1: reality in some way. And so it wasn't just all ethereal,
- 26:07Speaker 1: you know, and everything. It's like, it's like, I never,
- 26:10Speaker 1: you know, I never like, uh, feel it when it's happening.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I only feel things in hindsight, you know, like when I,
- 26:19Speaker 1: you know it's like i like i think that's.
- 26:20Speaker 5: Just the human brain in general yeah we don't appreciate
- 26:24Speaker 5: things when we have them right you'll be so caught
- 26:26Speaker 5: up in the things going wrong at the moment back
- 26:29Speaker 5: 20 years later and be like oh my god that
- 26:31Speaker 5: was the best time ever why was i unhappy then
- 26:34Speaker 5: yeah while you're currently in the moment unhappy now right
- 26:38Speaker 5: and like yeah if you make it another 10 years
- 26:40Speaker 5: you'll look back at this and be like what the
- 26:41Speaker 5: hell was wrong with me i wish i'm stupid like
- 26:44Speaker 5: So we're just stupid is what we take away. Humans
- 26:47Speaker 5: are stupid. And we don't appreciate what we have until
- 26:51Speaker 5: it's gone.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Right.
- 26:52Speaker 5: And we're busy worrying about other things and we're not
- 26:54Speaker 5: appreciating what we have at the moment.
- 26:56Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 26:57Speaker 5: And we only think about it when it's also gone.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Exactly. And then you go like, and then you go like, well,
- 27:02Speaker 1: you don't want to be like some hippy dippy dude
- 27:04Speaker 1: like going early in the moment. I mean, the thought of,
- 27:07Speaker 1: of getting rid of this shit and being like, you know,
- 27:10Speaker 1: cause so go, are we too tethered to the past?
- 27:13Speaker 1: You know what I mean? What would it be like
- 27:16Speaker 1: to cut these things and throw all this shit away?
- 27:19Speaker 1: I go like, I don't know. I would feel like
- 27:24Speaker 1: I'm floating in outer space if I did that.
- 27:27Speaker 5: So that's what I'm wondering now is like, okay, so
- 27:30Speaker 5: if we've got generations that aren't caught up so much
- 27:32Speaker 5: in the physical version of it, but still have these
- 27:36Speaker 5: things in some digital form like right are they just
- 27:40Speaker 5: as caught up in it but it's in the cloud
- 27:42Speaker 5: now like is it right you've still got photos and
- 27:44Speaker 5: drawings and writings but they're all just not physically in
- 27:48Speaker 5: front of you it's stored away on a hard drive
- 27:50Speaker 5: somewhere so like is it is it changing or is
- 27:54Speaker 5: it just the storage has changed the physical way that
- 27:57Speaker 5: it exists changed but we're still sort of so i
- 28:00Speaker 5: wonder are kids going to be that way in the
- 28:02Speaker 5: future or is it just I don't know. Something that
- 28:05Speaker 5: we had when we stored all our physical stuff around us.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:11Speaker 1: I don't know. I would say for me, you know, personally,
- 28:14Speaker 1: it's like the pictures that are on a hard drive.
- 28:16Speaker 1: You just never look at is the things that are
- 28:18Speaker 1: taking up space around you that you look at, you know?
- 28:22Speaker 1: And so maybe, maybe there will be like more healthy,
- 28:25Speaker 1: like you'll have like 80 million pictures, but you'll never
- 28:28Speaker 1: look at them. So you're kind of like maybe living
- 28:31Speaker 1: more in the present, but then you're, Then on the
- 28:36Speaker 1: living for content, to be a content creator, then you're
- 28:41Speaker 1: really not living in the moment either because you're living
- 28:44Speaker 1: to record the moment, but you're not.
- 28:47Speaker 5: Experiencing the moment. You're living to create a specific thing,
- 28:50Speaker 5: so you're not focusing on your normal life. It's only
- 28:52Speaker 5: the version of this thing that you're trying to put
- 28:55Speaker 5: out there for someone else to see.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Right, right, yeah. Yeah, so that's weird. So that's not
- 29:00Speaker 1: healthy either.
- 29:03Speaker 5: So people are dumb and unhealthy.
- 29:06Speaker 1: All right. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:07Speaker 5: All right, we've pieced it together.
- 29:08Speaker 1: This is very true. Anyway, yeah, it makes me want
- 29:11Speaker 1: to go buy some Blu-rays, you know, and everything to.
- 29:14Speaker 5: have my stuff well sometimes i do i should probably
- 29:18Speaker 5: stop and i don't so right right.
- 29:20Speaker 1: What was the last thing you bought uh i bought
- 29:24Speaker 1: the um the the x triology oh i.
- 29:29Speaker 5: Came across them on blu-ray and like again i what
- 29:33Speaker 5: i liked all three of those anyway i just watched
- 29:37Speaker 5: maxine and loved it.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 29:40Speaker 5: It's so immersive.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:43Speaker 5: And then I ran across, and I was looking, and
- 29:44Speaker 5: I was like, well, yeah, I want to get those,
- 29:46Speaker 5: but do I need to get these right now? And
- 29:47Speaker 5: I was like, that's kind of cheap. And then I
- 29:49Speaker 5: looked it up, and, like, the person was selling all
- 29:51Speaker 5: three for less than what Maxine was going for by itself.
- 29:55Speaker 5: I was like, okay, yeah, I'm going to go ahead
- 29:56Speaker 5: and get these now.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:59Speaker 5: Now I have the whole trilogy there.
- 30:01Speaker 1: So you bought it online from a seller or you
- 30:03Speaker 1: bought it?
- 30:03Speaker 5: No, this was in the real world. See, I still
- 30:06Speaker 5: go out into the world.
- 30:07Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 30:08Speaker 5: That's how I get myself in trouble because then I
- 30:10Speaker 5: spend more money. I sometimes force myself to stay home
- 30:16Speaker 5: because I can't afford to go buy more stuff. And
- 30:18Speaker 5: I know I will find something because I always end
- 30:20Speaker 5: up finding stuff. So that was one of those wasn't planning,
- 30:23Speaker 5: just walking around the place. And I'm like, oh, look,
- 30:25Speaker 5: there's those. I need to get those. Hey, wait, that's
- 30:28Speaker 5: pretty cheap. And then I'm like, then I convince my, well,
- 30:31Speaker 5: I have to get it now. I'm stupid if I
- 30:33Speaker 5: don't buy it now. Look how cheap it is comparatively.
- 30:36Speaker 5: And then I come home with more Blu-rays. So this
- 30:38Speaker 5: is my life.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Those are really good. Those are probably like some touchstone
- 30:42Speaker 1: horror movies of the last, you know.
- 30:44Speaker 5: Those are pretty impressive, I have to say. I always
- 30:46Speaker 5: like his movies, but like those are an interesting three
- 30:50Speaker 5: because the weird timeline and the shared, you know, sort
- 30:55Speaker 5: of one person through all three, but not really the
- 30:58Speaker 5: same character. So it's, yeah, it's an interesting version of
- 31:01Speaker 5: a trilogy.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Just so they just nail it. It's so
- 31:05Speaker 1: cool that, you know, they just really nail a different
- 31:08Speaker 1: look for each one. You know, it's just, it's just,
- 31:11Speaker 1: you know, it's like a horror trilogy for like, you know,
- 31:14Speaker 1: film nerds.
- 31:16Speaker 5: Well, especially the third one. Like he is like, that's
- 31:19Speaker 5: the one I like. They're both impressed of the first
- 31:21Speaker 5: two in their own way, but, But then that third one,
- 31:24Speaker 5: I feel like he just went all into the experience.
- 31:27Speaker 5: Like even if you don't care about the story, it's
- 31:29Speaker 5: telling the world that he builds is so. And again,
- 31:33Speaker 5: because I kind of was there, I wasn't in that place,
- 31:37Speaker 5: but I was in that time. And I'm like, no,
- 31:39Speaker 5: this is all accurate. Like he literally found a way
- 31:42Speaker 5: to make it like they're in the video store. They're
- 31:46Speaker 5: walking down Hollywood Boulevard. And I'm just like, it all
- 31:49Speaker 5: looks super dated. Like he found a way to recreate
- 31:53Speaker 5: this that like is really immersive. So yeah, that one
- 31:56Speaker 5: is amazing from that aspect, even if you don't care
- 31:59Speaker 5: about the horror story. And I still think the horror
- 32:01Speaker 5: is really cool too.
- 32:02Speaker 8: So.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, definitely. Yeah, yeah, I think Ty West, he
- 32:05Speaker 1: was probably one of the first people who said, like,
- 32:07Speaker 1: I'm going to make a movie that looks like it
- 32:09Speaker 1: was made in another time, you know?
- 32:13Speaker 5: And yet, I'm still amazed, does it for a pretty
- 32:17Speaker 5: minimal budget from what I've seen anyway? I don't know,
- 32:19Speaker 5: he might be frustrated at all times, but I just, like,
- 32:22Speaker 5: know that, like, he's not getting... 100 million dollars and
- 32:26Speaker 5: yet some of these things look so good that i'm
- 32:28Speaker 5: like how he does it on a still indie budget
- 32:32Speaker 5: or at least you know mid-level low-end studio kind of
- 32:35Speaker 5: money and yet deliver something that looks as good as
- 32:38Speaker 5: his movies do so.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Oh absolutely it's impressive no he's he's pretty great you
- 32:43Speaker 1: remember his cameo in uh What is it called? You're Next.
- 32:48Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. When you're watching the dorks around the table,
- 32:51Speaker 5: you're like, that guy and that. And look who that is.
- 32:53Speaker 5: She's also in his movie. So, yeah, everybody around the
- 32:57Speaker 5: table is just a dork from indie movies. You're like, ah-ha. Again,
- 33:01Speaker 5: it's only funny for the kind of person who would
- 33:04Speaker 5: be watching You're Next.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 33:06Speaker 5: Any other human being in the world would not know
- 33:09Speaker 5: anyone at the table, but you're like, oh, look who
- 33:12Speaker 5: it is.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Like, what do you call it? Like the guy is
- 33:15Speaker 1: like saying like, oh, Ty West's character gets all offended
- 33:18Speaker 1: because this guy who's asking, talking about movies is talking
- 33:23Speaker 1: on and on about, you know, some, some terrible movie
- 33:28Speaker 1: or something. The guy's like, oh, he's just trying to
- 33:30Speaker 1: swallow his food, you know? I don't know. It was great.
- 33:33Speaker 1: It was great. Yeah, yeah. That was a good purchase.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Good purchase.
- 33:36Speaker 5: So what was your last physical media purchase?
- 33:40Speaker 1: My last physical media purchase. I mean, the only place
- 33:43Speaker 1: I go is like Walmart down the road. It's five minutes.
- 33:48Speaker 5: That is not my choice if I can help it.
- 33:51Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 33:52Speaker 5: I try to steer clear of that place.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Exactly. Well, you know, I was going like, you know what?
- 33:59Speaker 1: I can stay in between these two intersections and like
- 34:03Speaker 1: get everything I need.
- 34:05Speaker 5: Didn't we say you need to get out a little more?
- 34:07Speaker 5: I know, I know.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Okay, so on one intersection, there's a movie theater. On
- 34:11Speaker 1: the other section, there's the Walmart. Now, so I'm going like,
- 34:16Speaker 1: you know, I could sort of stay in the same
- 34:18Speaker 1: 10 mile radius and go like, yeah, no, it's not healthy.
- 34:22Speaker 1: It's not healthy. Okay, so what is it? So Walmart, right?
- 34:25Speaker 1: You know, and they don't really have the, But whatever.
- 34:28Speaker 1: It's not really a selection. It gets smaller and smaller
- 34:31Speaker 1: every year. But I don't even have the bin of
- 34:34Speaker 1: $ 5 DVDs.
- 34:35Speaker 5: I was going to say, a lot of places don't
- 34:37Speaker 5: even have that physical. That's why, because I end up
- 34:40Speaker 5: going to a lot of used stores and used bookstores that,
- 34:43Speaker 5: of course, I'm only there for the Blu-rays. And like,
- 34:46Speaker 5: you know, Peddler's Malls, I find more stuff than anywhere else.
- 34:49Speaker 5: But yeah, Target, some of them don't even have Blu-rays anymore.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 34:54Speaker 5: It's a different way of releasing movies now.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:59Speaker 1: No, it's funny. No, so the last thing I bought
- 35:01Speaker 1: was from Walmart, $ 15 Blu-ray of The Fablemans. All right,
- 35:07Speaker 1: all right.
- 35:08Speaker 5: Again, movie geek for movie geeks.
- 35:09Speaker 1: That's it. That's it.
- 35:11Speaker 5: Layers upon layers of movie geek. Yep.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Absolutely yeah it's a spielberg doing you know.
- 35:17Speaker 5: Spielberg doing spielberg but kind of not spielberg but still totally.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Spielberg and and but it's very brian de palma-y in
- 35:25Speaker 1: certain parts especially you know he's going through his he's
- 35:28Speaker 1: editing the the family home movies you know uh i
- 35:32Speaker 1: really like that movie uh but i liked it more
- 35:36Speaker 1: in the theater re-watching it didn't it didn't have the
- 35:39Speaker 1: same like jump to me but.
- 35:41Speaker 5: You just can't experience it at home dude you just
- 35:45Speaker 5: can't fully experience it until you're sitting in the theater
- 35:49Speaker 5: and it's projected on 35 millimeters none of that digital
- 35:53Speaker 5: projection nonsense and i.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Was completely the different when i was in and going
- 35:58Speaker 1: to georgia state for film and everything i would go
- 36:01Speaker 1: like why would i spend i mean probably i'm just
- 36:04Speaker 1: like a roger corman type i go why would i
- 36:06Speaker 1: spend I can't go into debt to learn how to
- 36:09Speaker 1: do this stuff. You know, I gotta like, can't we
- 36:11Speaker 1: just like shoot it on video to learn, you know,
- 36:14Speaker 1: basic visual storytelling. Why do we have to like spend
- 36:16Speaker 1: like $ 10, 000 to like make a, you know, uh, you know, uh,
- 36:21Speaker 1: an eight millimeter freaking, you know, thing that's just going
- 36:24Speaker 1: to be seen by the class and everything. I mean,
- 36:27Speaker 1: I get it. I mean, I guess it was 16 millimeter,
- 36:29Speaker 1: you know, and everything. So it was expensive. It was
- 36:32Speaker 1: expensive for me and everything. So, you know, so everybody
- 36:34Speaker 1: else was being like, oh, no, you got to shoot
- 36:37Speaker 1: it on film to really, if you're really a film guy,
- 36:39Speaker 1: you know, and everything. I'll go like, yeah. So, so again,
- 36:43Speaker 1: I'm not that guy. I'm not, I'm not like, unless
- 36:47Speaker 1: you have a film.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Uh, showing it, you know, projecting it on a video
- 36:52Speaker 1: projector is no better than watching it, you know, on
- 36:55Speaker 1: your phone, you know.
- 36:56Speaker 5: To really, to really get it.
- 36:59Speaker 1: You gotta have a, like a print and you gotta
- 37:03Speaker 1: project it and you gotta have the clickety clackety or
- 37:07Speaker 1: it's not even watching a movie.
- 37:09Speaker 5: Well, it's funny. It has come back around from the
- 37:13Speaker 5: filmmaking aspect because it went to, because it was just financially,
- 37:17Speaker 5: that's how you had to do it for so many directors.
- 37:20Speaker 5: It just became, you're shooting digital or you're not making
- 37:23Speaker 5: this movie. And you've got now the super high end
- 37:26Speaker 5: tier of directors have enough pull that now they're back
- 37:30Speaker 5: to shooting. Either they're shooting on film or they're pulling
- 37:34Speaker 5: out old. There's a couple of them in the last
- 37:35Speaker 5: year that have been like, I'm shooting it in Vista vision.
- 37:38Speaker 5: You know, it's like they're pulling out like specific old
- 37:41Speaker 5: formats that like, you have to bring in people to
- 37:44Speaker 5: figure out how to do it now because it's so outdated.
- 37:47Speaker 5: But they're like back to the filmmaking experience and they're like,
- 37:51Speaker 5: bringing out super old school stuff to like i guess
- 37:55Speaker 5: experience it as a filmmaker and then deliver that to
- 37:58Speaker 5: you as the audience.
- 37:59Speaker 1: So yeah yeah so yeah so i was going to
- 38:03Speaker 1: say like shot in cinerama or something like that but
- 38:07Speaker 1: you know what man i'm seeing this stuff popping up
- 38:11Speaker 1: on my feed of this new way, these new theaters
- 38:15Speaker 1: where they're projecting on all the walls and the ceiling. And, uh,
- 38:20Speaker 1: there's a one in Atlanta. Now they're playing the matrix
- 38:23Speaker 1: coming up and it's, uh, the movies in the middle,
- 38:26Speaker 1: but then like they're projecting like this entire environment all around.
- 38:31Speaker 5: Since around dome.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Yeah. No, it's like really, and see for me, like
- 38:39Speaker 1: that's real annoying.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:43Speaker 5: Well, I mean, that just seems novelty. Like, I remember
- 38:46Speaker 5: the only time I'd ever seen that growing up was
- 38:49Speaker 5: you'd have to go to, like, Gatlinburg. It was a
- 38:53Speaker 5: gimmicky thing for tourists to go stand inside of this
- 38:57Speaker 5: place and then projected 360 degrees around you is this thing. And, like,
- 39:04Speaker 5: it was super cool when I was a dumb kid. But, like, yeah,
- 39:07Speaker 5: it seems... impractical for most regular filmmaking but yeah yeah
- 39:12Speaker 5: if you can find the right way to use it
- 39:14Speaker 5: i guess it can be cool.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Yeah it's it's weird dude it's weird so i think
- 39:20Speaker 1: what this thing is is uh it's the same technology
- 39:24Speaker 1: they use on like mandalorian and stuff like that where
- 39:26Speaker 1: like it's a super high definition screen alright you know
- 39:33Speaker 1: it's like post blue screen technology where you don't put
- 39:37Speaker 1: it in later you just have the image it's.
- 39:40Speaker 5: Just behind you as you shoot yeah right right and
- 39:43Speaker 5: so I think that's what this is it's not projected
- 39:46Speaker 5: it's you're basically watching like a 360 television screen.
- 39:50Speaker 1: And I had a friend who went to go see
- 39:54Speaker 1: one of these, and he says, like, the picture is
- 39:57Speaker 1: insanely clear. It's, like, insanely clear. It's, like, I don't know,
- 40:04Speaker 1: you're there or something.
- 40:05Speaker 5: I go, like, all I can picture as you're describing
- 40:08Speaker 5: this is Mike TV.
- 40:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:09Speaker 5: It's, like, we're just one step away from Willy Wonka
- 40:13Speaker 5: at this point, where they're going to beam you into
- 40:15Speaker 5: the television.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Right, right. Yeah, yeah. Now, it looks dumb, because it's like,
- 40:21Speaker 1: the movies are made to have this rectangular frame line,
- 40:25Speaker 1: and then they just, like, extrapolate all this dumb shit
- 40:29Speaker 1: around it. Like, you know, like, I don't know, like,
- 40:32Speaker 1: The Matrix has, you know, The Matrix, where they're showing
- 40:35Speaker 1: the reign of data you know it's like all around
- 40:40Speaker 1: you now and then like you know when you're in
- 40:43Speaker 1: the dojo fighting they have like the the shot the
- 40:47Speaker 1: the floor and the ceiling of the dojo above you
- 40:50Speaker 1: and below you and i'm going like well i don't
- 40:52Speaker 1: i don't know if i want i don't i kind
- 40:55Speaker 1: of like frame i like i like i like scene composition.
- 40:59Speaker 5: Somebody just kicked me in the head this is too real.
- 41:02Speaker 1: I don't like this anymore I know. It's going to
- 41:08Speaker 1: be like the Kentucky Fried movie.
- 41:11Speaker 5: Experience the immersive experience of film as you get kicked
- 41:18Speaker 5: in the head by this guy that might be Keanu.
- 41:20Speaker 1: You don't know. Jesus. I don't know. Yeah, it seems
- 41:25Speaker 1: real gimmicky. But I don't want to pay money to
- 41:28Speaker 1: watch a screen projected at me. I mean, I want
- 41:30Speaker 1: to see the– I need the light coming over my head.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Oh my God, I'm getting so old and weird, dude.
- 41:36Speaker 5: That cloud's not going to yell at itself.
- 41:41Speaker 1: That's it. Oh my God, dude. Anyway, it's because I
- 41:46Speaker 1: don't watch the news. I get upset about this kind
- 41:49Speaker 1: of stuff.
- 41:49Speaker 5: No, that's a better option. Let me just say that's
- 41:53Speaker 5: a better option.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Yeah, there we go. There we go.
- 41:56Speaker 5: So, have you seen anything lately?
- 42:07Speaker 1: So, yes, I did. I will say, I'm just going
- 42:11Speaker 1: to start with this because this is, okay, if you
- 42:14Speaker 1: go see a weird movie, they play weird movie trailers.
- 42:17Speaker 5: Yeah, you got to know your target audience.
- 42:20Speaker 1: Exactly. And so, and so, you know, if you go, so, so,
- 42:25Speaker 1: you know, you sit around and you go like, oh,
- 42:27Speaker 1: nothing's original. Nothing's good. Nothing's, nothing's coming out that, you know,
- 42:32Speaker 1: you know, all the original stories are dead. There's, Billions
- 42:35Speaker 1: of movies being made every second, all right? They are
- 42:39Speaker 1: not all sequels and tie-ins, okay? There are, like, original
- 42:45Speaker 1: things coming out, but it's just you don't know about
- 42:48Speaker 1: them because everything's coming out all at once. Everything, all
- 42:52Speaker 1: the time, all at once. Like, whatever that movie was called.
- 42:55Speaker 5: That's what I said on a previous episode. I was
- 42:57Speaker 5: just like, people complain that there's nothing good. I'm like, no,
- 43:00Speaker 5: you just don't look for anything. If you dig into it,
- 43:04Speaker 5: you can find all kinds of weird stuff that's not
- 43:06Speaker 5: cookie cutter, but most normal people don't want to do that.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Exactly. I don't usually watch trailers, but I went to
- 43:14Speaker 1: go see a movie, so I'm going like, well, I'm
- 43:16Speaker 1: not going to remember anything I watch anyway. So, uh,
- 43:20Speaker 1: you know, I can watch trailers now and they don't
- 43:22Speaker 1: ruin the movie because I'm going to forget that I
- 43:23Speaker 1: saw it.
- 43:24Speaker 2: All right.
- 43:24Speaker 1: So, but a movie that a trailer that I saw
- 43:28Speaker 1: that I was going like, Oh damn, this is like,
- 43:30Speaker 1: I'm going to see this in the theater. Is this
- 43:32Speaker 1: movie coming out called is God is okay. Okay, Is
- 43:37Speaker 1: God Is is not coming out for another two months,
- 43:40Speaker 1: all right?
- 43:40Speaker 5: Is this like the new album by Was Not Was?
- 43:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 43:43Speaker 5: Those guys.
- 43:44Speaker 1: There are dinosaurs.
- 43:45Speaker 6: They rock.
- 43:46Speaker 1: There are dinosaurs. People are taking them for walks in
- 43:50Speaker 1: this movie.
- 43:50Speaker 5: I mean, that's an important thing. You got to walk
- 43:53Speaker 5: your dinosaurs.
- 43:54Speaker 1: And this isn't about firefighters or anything like that.
- 43:59Speaker 5: I assume this is like some sort of weird Christian movie. Yeah. Yeah.
- 44:01Speaker 1: This isn't about, you know, firefighters and their, uh, men's group,
- 44:05Speaker 1: you know, Bible study.
- 44:06Speaker 5: All right.
- 44:07Speaker 1: This is, this is, this movie looks insane. Okay. It's like, uh,
- 44:11Speaker 1: like an all black cast, uh, female black director. And
- 44:16Speaker 1: the movie is about these two, the, this, these two
- 44:20Speaker 1: sisters and their mom, whose dad had doused them in
- 44:24Speaker 1: gasoline and set them on fire. And it's all, I
- 44:28Speaker 1: guess it's because it's all the South. All right. And
- 44:31Speaker 1: it's got, you know, small town, Southern Gothic, uh, you know,
- 44:38Speaker 1: what is happening in these small towns that you pass by,
- 44:42Speaker 1: that you drive by on the highway. And you go like,
- 44:43Speaker 1: what are people doing in Lumpkin? You know?
- 44:46Speaker 5: You don't want to know. That's the answer.
- 44:48Speaker 1: That's what I always say. You drive past and you
- 44:50Speaker 1: go like Harrisburg, you know, and it's like population. And
- 44:53Speaker 1: you go like, what's going on in Harrisburg?
- 44:56Speaker 2: You know?
- 44:56Speaker 1: I mean, there's not even like a main street. It's
- 44:59Speaker 1: just here. So this is like, so God is, God is,
- 45:03Speaker 1: is like taking place in that, you know, rural, southern
- 45:08Speaker 1: sun-baked area and these and it's basically a revenge movie
- 45:13Speaker 1: of these two sisters the mom is just burnt beyond
- 45:15Speaker 1: all recognition and one of the sisters is burnt all
- 45:18Speaker 1: up and she's got freddie everybody's got freddie krueger makeup
- 45:21Speaker 1: in and um and they get in this like uh
- 45:26Speaker 1: you know old beautiful uh sedan car you know it
- 45:29Speaker 1: looks like something from the 70s or 80s you know
- 45:31Speaker 1: it has um And they're basically the two sisters. One
- 45:36Speaker 1: sister isn't burnt, you know, and is beautiful. And they're
- 45:39Speaker 1: going on this pilgrimage to find their dad to burn
- 45:46Speaker 1: them up so they can kill them. You know, kind
- 45:48Speaker 1: of like a Kill Bill kind of thing, you know.
- 45:50Speaker 1: But it gets into, like, the, you know, from the movie.
- 45:55Speaker 1: You know, it kind of looks Tarantino because they've got
- 45:57Speaker 1: all the characters pumping up. you know, it was like,
- 46:00Speaker 1: you know, the, this, the, that, you know, and everything. And, uh,
- 46:04Speaker 1: but it like really gets you excited. And like, it
- 46:06Speaker 1: goes into like, uh, the, the dad is like now
- 46:10Speaker 1: hooked up with like a, uh, uh, like a female preacher,
- 46:14Speaker 1: you know, charismatic preacher who's like, it looks like they
- 46:17Speaker 1: run out of this little chapel, you know, and it's very,
- 46:20Speaker 1: you know, it's all very Pentecostal and everything. And, uh,
- 46:24Speaker 1: And so it looks wild, dude. It looks like it's
- 46:27Speaker 1: got a real strong vision of what it's doing, you know?
- 46:33Speaker 1: And I go like, man, this looks so like a
- 46:36Speaker 1: fresh take on that kind of, you know, revenge thriller,
- 46:40Speaker 1: you know? And so I'm totally hyped for it. So
- 46:43Speaker 1: I saw a trailer that kind of blew me away.
- 46:46Speaker 5: See, there you go. We still need to, like, Delve
- 46:50Speaker 5: into it and find cool stuff that's out there.
- 46:52Speaker 1: That's it.
- 46:53Speaker 5: That's what I keep trying to do. If I talk
- 46:55Speaker 5: to people, which I don't, I would tell them that's
- 46:58Speaker 5: what you need to do. But again, the people I
- 47:01Speaker 5: don't bother to talk to are the kind that don't
- 47:03Speaker 5: venture out and look for anything. They're just like, oh. Oh,
- 47:07Speaker 5: they make superhero movies now. And I'm like, they don't
- 47:09Speaker 5: even do that anymore. No, those are all falling flat, dude.
- 47:12Speaker 5: I hate to tell you, but we're still complaining about
- 47:16Speaker 5: from 10 years ago. Isn't even the thing anymore.
- 47:18Speaker 1: No dude. No dude. It's a, yeah, yeah. I mean, yeah, no.
- 47:23Speaker 1: So yeah, it's totally out there. The stuff is out there. And, uh, yeah,
- 47:27Speaker 1: I mean, everybody's kind of tired about that, that, that
- 47:31Speaker 1: whole cycle. So, I mean, I think it's like, uh.
- 47:34Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 47:34Speaker 1: I went to go see a weird movie, so it
- 47:36Speaker 1: had weird trailers. And I was going like, oh, yeah,
- 47:38Speaker 1: hell yeah. Fantastic. You tell me about something you've watched,
- 47:43Speaker 1: because when I get to the movie that I've watched,
- 47:45Speaker 1: I could probably talk too long about it.
- 47:50Speaker 5: There's one I watched semi-recently, but I kind of wanted
- 47:53Speaker 5: to discuss it with you, or just in general. As
- 47:57Speaker 5: soon as I saw it, I was like, I... I
- 48:00Speaker 5: need to discuss the mechanics of this. Okay. Have you
- 48:05Speaker 5: seen Honey Don't?
- 48:07Speaker 1: Honey Don't. Honey Don't. I don't even think. Hold on
- 48:11Speaker 1: one second. Let me.
- 48:13Speaker 5: It is the second in the new lesbian trilogy that
- 48:18Speaker 5: the lone Coen brother is making with his, I think, wife.
- 48:22Speaker 1: Okay.
- 48:23Speaker 5: Are you familiar with these new non-brothers versions of the
- 48:27Speaker 5: Coen brothers movies?
- 48:29Speaker 1: No, it looks like it's on Netflix, though. So maybe I.
- 48:32Speaker 5: Heard about it. And again, I like that cast. So
- 48:35Speaker 5: I was like, all right, this looks interesting. But it
- 48:39Speaker 5: is weird.
- 48:41Speaker 1: OK, I know nothing about this. It's got Don Swayze
- 48:44Speaker 1: in it. What the hell is he doing there?
- 48:47Speaker 5: That I don't know. It's mostly Margaret. The Margaret Wally
- 48:53Speaker 5: is sort of our lead character. And then I knew
- 48:55Speaker 5: Aubrey Plaza was in it.
- 48:56Speaker 1: I was like, all right, I'm sold already.
- 48:57Speaker 5: So like anything she's in, she's made it better. Like
- 49:00Speaker 5: she's always weird and interesting. So like no matter where
- 49:04Speaker 5: you put her, even places it doesn't seem like she
- 49:06Speaker 5: should be stuck into, somehow she always makes it more interesting.
- 49:09Speaker 5: So that's still the case, but it's just– it's so–
- 49:14Speaker 5: these these new, and I, I also had to then
- 49:18Speaker 5: delve into, I was like, did the, did the brothers
- 49:21Speaker 5: like have a rift? I don't think so. I think
- 49:23Speaker 5: it was just timing wise, I think. Cause the one
- 49:25Speaker 5: went off to make your Shakespeare and the other went
- 49:28Speaker 5: off to make sort of similar crime dramas, but not
- 49:33Speaker 5: the same.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 49:35Speaker 5: So that's, yeah, I watched the first one at home and,
- 49:39Speaker 5: you know, like last year or something. And I was like, yeah,
- 49:41Speaker 5: it's pretty good. It's not the same. Like again, I
- 49:45Speaker 5: don't want to judge it against everything else. Coen brothers.
- 49:47Speaker 5: Cause it's a different thing.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Right.
- 49:49Speaker 5: But they're similar enough that you kind of get the
- 49:52Speaker 5: feeling from both of these that you're like, yeah, I see.
- 49:55Speaker 5: It's very Coen esque. Because half of them is there,
- 49:58Speaker 5: but it's not the same as your old school Coen
- 50:01Speaker 5: Brothers movies.
- 50:01Speaker 1: Got it. Got it.
- 50:02Speaker 5: So this one in particular is just, and that's the
- 50:05Speaker 5: thing I'd heard. I don't know if it's just this
- 50:08Speaker 5: movie or if all of these that they're going to
- 50:12Speaker 5: are ones that they'd had because I'd heard this one
- 50:14Speaker 5: was an old screenplay that they'd had like 20 years ago.
- 50:18Speaker 5: And then they were busy doing their Coen Brothers movies.
- 50:20Speaker 5: And now I guess he like dusted it off and
- 50:22Speaker 5: was like, hey, honey, you want to make that movie
- 50:24Speaker 5: we wrote 20 years ago? Because it feels like things
- 50:28Speaker 5: are just kind of off. And I'm like, it's like
- 50:31Speaker 5: it needed another pass or two to like tighten things
- 50:35Speaker 5: up or decide what it is we're doing. Because it's
- 50:39Speaker 5: like there's moments in it that are great. And like
- 50:41Speaker 5: the performances are great. But like the mechanics of how
- 50:45Speaker 5: it comes together is just... flunky like you know it's
- 50:49Speaker 5: like the more i watched it and i was just
- 50:51Speaker 5: like i i mean i'm glad i've seen this but
- 50:55Speaker 5: it definitely doesn't it doesn't even flow like a normal
- 50:58Speaker 5: movie and definitely not like your old school coen brothers
- 51:01Speaker 5: movies which are so tight and like even when they're
- 51:04Speaker 5: weird and go off on their little tangents like it
- 51:07Speaker 5: somehow feels tied together and and like a like a
- 51:12Speaker 5: well-oiled machine by the time it all finishes whereas This just, like,
- 51:16Speaker 5: it's like they didn't decide for sure what they were doing. Yeah, yeah. Like,
- 51:22Speaker 5: I swear, and I would say, like, this is my
- 51:24Speaker 5: issue with a lot of movies now, that I'm like,
- 51:26Speaker 5: when they're going back and forth of like, what do
- 51:28Speaker 5: we make this? Do we make a movie? Do we
- 51:29Speaker 5: make a streaming series?
- 51:30Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 51:31Speaker 5: This one, like, and again, it couldn't have been that
- 51:33Speaker 5: if it was an old screenplay, because there wouldn't have
- 51:36Speaker 5: been an option to do anything else. But it feels like, like,
- 51:38Speaker 5: we learned so little about this main character. Like, if
- 51:42Speaker 5: this was the first episode... I'd be like, all right,
- 51:46Speaker 5: I like this character. I like, let's see where she's going.
- 51:48Speaker 5: But like, we learn next to nothing about her. The
- 51:53Speaker 5: basics of the story, like we sort of tie up
- 51:56Speaker 5: one part of this story, but there's two or three
- 51:59Speaker 5: other things that come up in it that are just
- 52:01Speaker 5: like left dangling. And you're just like, that'd be great
- 52:04Speaker 5: if this was come back next week for the next episode,
- 52:07Speaker 5: but this is the end of the movie. And I
- 52:09Speaker 5: don't think they're going to continue. So yeah, It's just weird.
- 52:14Speaker 5: It's like very basic mechanics of stuff that feel off
- 52:19Speaker 5: that I'm like, that's weird for Ethan Coen to like
- 52:23Speaker 5: put something out that is this just sort of off
- 52:27Speaker 5: in a basic filmmaking way. Like, that's just strange to me.
- 52:32Speaker 1: And you go like, hmm, maybe it was Joel directing mainly.
- 52:37Speaker 1: Back before they started sharing credit. I don't know, man.
- 52:41Speaker 1: That's real weird. Coen Brothers movies for me are real bizarre.
- 52:46Speaker 1: Ethan Coen and I mean, I like them still, but
- 52:53Speaker 1: some of the ones that I used to really like,
- 52:56Speaker 1: they don't, they haven't, maybe I haven't, because I've just
- 53:00Speaker 1: seen them so much, they haven't and my tastes have changed.
- 53:05Speaker 2: All right.
- 53:05Speaker 1: And so some, I've been finding movie and this is
- 53:09Speaker 1: something that's probably keys into something here. Now I love,
- 53:13Speaker 1: I love, uh, the Coen brothers and the, this looks
- 53:17Speaker 1: like a, like a modern door kind of thing. Which
- 53:21Speaker 1: it is. Yeah.
- 53:22Speaker 5: And again, that would be great.
- 53:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 53:24Speaker 5: It's just something weird about it.
- 53:27Speaker 1: Right, right, right. I think like what they do is
- 53:29Speaker 1: like they take, they make a noir, but then they,
- 53:32Speaker 1: they just kind of changed the main character to be
- 53:34Speaker 1: somebody you want to see, you know, like Big Lebowski
- 53:36Speaker 1: is probably the most, you know, uh, basic version of that.
- 53:41Speaker 1: It's like a, it's like a LA noir story, but
- 53:44Speaker 1: instead of like having Sam Spade, you've got, you know,
- 53:46Speaker 1: some stoner guy. Right. Right. And like, uh, Fargo is
- 53:51Speaker 1: like murder crime, you know, but it's set in a awful,
- 53:56Speaker 1: and the main character is like somebody you wouldn't usually see,
- 53:59Speaker 1: you know?
- 53:59Speaker 5: Which this, she feels like a very, like she is
- 54:03Speaker 5: very like film noir. She seems like she's sort of
- 54:07Speaker 5: the Sam Spade. She's just like, what if Sam Spade
- 54:10Speaker 5: was a young woman and a lesbian?
- 54:12Speaker 1: Let's go. That's the main change.
- 54:17Speaker 5: But again like it there's just the other things going
- 54:20Speaker 5: on don't make any.
- 54:21Speaker 1: Sense like when when they wrote it maybe being a
- 54:24Speaker 1: lesbian was like this is still like a hot topic.
- 54:27Speaker 5: I guess because again that's why i said it's like
- 54:29Speaker 5: their their lesbian trilogy because that was also like a
- 54:32Speaker 5: key feature in driveaway dolls which was the first one
- 54:35Speaker 5: he did last you know the year before this right
- 54:37Speaker 5: and like that one i feel like works better as
- 54:39Speaker 5: a movie i like that one it's still you know
- 54:42Speaker 5: it's not the same as the old school Coen brothers,
- 54:45Speaker 5: but that's fine. It's not, it's not the Coen brothers.
- 54:47Speaker 5: So it shouldn't be judged by that. I'm fine with that,
- 54:50Speaker 5: but it worked better as a movie. It came together
- 54:52Speaker 5: as a movie where this one just seemed like there's
- 54:56Speaker 5: something missing there. It's missing some pieces along the way.
- 55:00Speaker 5: And supposedly there's a third one that they're doing. That
- 55:03Speaker 5: is again, different characters, but kind of the same, you know,
- 55:06Speaker 5: modern day noir and of course the main characters seem
- 55:09Speaker 5: to be lesbian which is fine it just seems to
- 55:12Speaker 5: be it's just weird that like ethan cohen latched onto
- 55:15Speaker 5: this you know yeah the forefront of the lesbian movement
- 55:18Speaker 5: is ethan cohen like yeah.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Right right but when he wrote it When he wrote
- 55:23Speaker 1: it back when Truth or Dare, Madonna's Truth or Dare
- 55:25Speaker 1: came out, you know, it was like, it was real edgy.
- 55:28Speaker 5: Well, when the coolest movie was bound, you know, and
- 55:31Speaker 5: it's like, all right, this is it. We're doing it.
- 55:33Speaker 9: Like, yeah.
- 55:34Speaker 5: So now it's just like, well, yeah. And, you know,
- 55:36Speaker 5: it's like, it's not really a big deal, but like,
- 55:39Speaker 5: so I don't know. I don't know if like Trisha
- 55:41Speaker 5: Cook co-writes this stuff with him. So maybe she's like
- 55:44Speaker 5: really into the, no, I want to capture this experience.
- 55:47Speaker 5: And like, I don't know, but yeah.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:51Speaker 5: It's an interesting turn that their careers have taken overall.
- 55:55Speaker 5: And it's a weird kind of road that Ethan's headed down.
- 55:58Speaker 5: But yeah, I'm glad I've seen it. But it's just
- 56:02Speaker 5: something weird about it.
- 56:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I've got to check it out. I'll find a
- 56:06Speaker 1: stream and I'll check these out. I didn't realize Ethan
- 56:09Speaker 1: was out making his own movies. That's sort of how
- 56:11Speaker 1: disconnected I am and everything.
- 56:13Speaker 5: Yeah, this is two in the last couple of years
- 56:16Speaker 5: and supposedly a third in the works. And then eventually
- 56:19Speaker 5: I think they're supposed to come back together. I think
- 56:21Speaker 5: it was just they were doing different things and at
- 56:25Speaker 5: that point they just didn't have time to work out.
- 56:29Speaker 5: the mechanics of what they were doing in the real
- 56:31Speaker 5: world to be able to work on something together. And
- 56:32Speaker 5: they both went, Oh, let's just work on different things.
- 56:34Speaker 5: But I don't think there's a rift that I was
- 56:37Speaker 5: concerned that maybe there was, but like, I think they're
- 56:40Speaker 5: supposed to come back and do another Coen brothers movie
- 56:43Speaker 5: down the line somewhere.
- 56:44Speaker 1: So yeah, there's, there's a really funny article. It's, it's fake, but, uh,
- 56:52Speaker 1: I found out it's fake.
- 56:53Speaker 8: All right.
- 56:53Speaker 1: But it's really hilarious where somebody wrote, uh, ethan cohen's
- 56:59Speaker 1: review of uh the shakespeare movie that joel did you
- 57:04Speaker 1: know and it's it's so hysterical where it's saying like
- 57:09Speaker 1: this guy is so insecure about his filmmaking that when
- 57:14Speaker 1: he makes his own movie he has to go to
- 57:16Speaker 1: hamlet or something like that he has to go to
- 57:18Speaker 1: shakespeare and dress it up In all this high-class culture
- 57:25Speaker 1: and everything, so nobody would dare criticize him for making it.
- 57:31Speaker 5: I brought in the biggest A-list actor I could get.
- 57:35Speaker 5: And he's a master at the craft, so you can't
- 57:38Speaker 5: say anything bad.
- 57:39Speaker 1: We've got.
- 57:40Speaker 5: the greatest writer of the world's ever known with the
- 57:43Speaker 5: greatest actor the world has ever known. And I'm directing.
- 57:46Speaker 5: So that's right.
- 57:47Speaker 1: That's right. So go ahead.
- 57:48Speaker 5: Take your shot.
- 57:49Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 57:51Speaker 1: You are stupid. If you do not like this, you know, um,
- 57:55Speaker 1: you know, so, so yeah, yeah, yeah. So it was
- 57:58Speaker 1: real funny. I thought it was real, but then I
- 58:00Speaker 1: got debunked, but it was hilarious. Yeah. I love them.
- 58:04Speaker 1: I love them. I love them. I love them to
- 58:06Speaker 1: death and everything. And, um, um, Always loved their movies,
- 58:09Speaker 1: but I think... Okay, here's the thing. Some of the
- 58:14Speaker 1: movies that... And this is probably just if it's too loud,
- 58:19Speaker 1: you're too old kind of thing going on. All right,
- 58:21Speaker 1: some of the movies that I've always loved and I've
- 58:24Speaker 1: seen a hundred times, I've gone back and revisited, and
- 58:28Speaker 1: I find them a little shrill now.
- 58:30Speaker 6: What?
- 58:32Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Okay, so two examples here. I would say
- 58:34Speaker 1: I still love Raising Arizona.
- 58:36Speaker 5: I was going to say, there's some that I'm like,
- 58:38Speaker 5: they almost get better the more. Like, Raising Arizona is
- 58:41Speaker 5: one that never ceases to amaze me.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I love it.
- 58:44Speaker 5: Which is interesting as early on as it was. It's
- 58:46Speaker 5: like their second big feature, more or less. And, like,
- 58:49Speaker 5: they were that ahead of the curve on, like, just
- 58:53Speaker 5: the technology and the storytelling and the characters.
- 58:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. It was reinvented cinema. I mean, it was
- 58:58Speaker 1: like Sam Raimi and Barry Sonnenfeld, you know, just making
- 59:03Speaker 1: a subjective camera an active participant in the storytelling. in
- 59:11Speaker 1: a way that, you know, with a kinetic property that
- 59:15Speaker 1: just have not been seen before is, yeah, game changing.
- 59:19Speaker 1: Both of those movies came out in 87 and you
- 59:22Speaker 1: just go like, wow, somebody had cracked the code.
- 59:26Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely at that point in time.
- 59:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Now I find, I do still love the movie,
- 59:31Speaker 1: but I do find it a little shrill. I'm just
- 59:36Speaker 1: going like, everybody calm down.
- 59:37Speaker 5: Crazy talk.
- 59:38Speaker 1: I know, I know. So it's just me. I just
- 59:40Speaker 1: need to eat my soup and saltines and watch Will
- 59:42Speaker 1: of Fortune and go to bed, you know? And one
- 59:47Speaker 1: of theirs I can't even watch, The Intolerable Cruelty, is
- 59:50Speaker 1: just so shrill that I can't get past the first
- 59:53Speaker 1: 15 minutes.
- 59:54Speaker 5: Yeah, it's one of those I didn't get to at
- 59:56Speaker 5: the time, and now I look back and go, do
- 59:58Speaker 5: I want, eh, I'll watch something else. Like, I just
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: haven't gotten to it yet. Like, still, now. How many
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: years later? I was still like, nah. I did eventually watch,
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: what's the other weird comedy that the, what's the one
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: with Brad Pitt?
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: Oh, Burn After Reading.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: Yeah, Burn After Reading. I finally watched Burn After Reading
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: in the last couple of years. And I'm like, okay,
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: I see why people didn't get it. It's definitely doing
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: its own weird thing, especially plot-wise. It's doing its own
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: weird thing. But I was like, comedy-wise, it's still. These
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: are great performances. It's doing really good stuff in the moment.
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: But yeah, by the end, you're like, what.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: Did I watch? What the hell was that? I remember
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: enjoying it when I watched it, but I couldn't tell
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: you what happened afterwards.
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: Yeah. Well, that is the movie. You're like, wait, what?
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: What happened? And I feel like that was around that
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: same time with Intolerable Cruelty where people were just like,
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: what are you guys making now? What is this?
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: Every time they would do one of the, like, we're
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: going to do a serious one, and now we're going
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: to do a wacky comedy. And people would be like,
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: what are you doing? What is this? So, like, go
- 1:01:05Speaker 5: back to Fargo. Go back to No Country. Like, do
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: the grim serious stuff. We don't understand your comedy. So, yeah,
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: I mean, those I kind of get. Those are ones
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: that just land weird as well. So they can do that, certainly,
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: as filmmakers.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's weird. I still love Lebowski. Now, Country
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: for Old Men, that made me so angry. And I
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: know I just didn't get it, man. But that ending,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I think I vocally yelled.
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: See, that's... That's the most normal thing. That's the normal
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: people out there.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: That same thing. So you really are.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: Soup and saltines, man. You're heading right down that road.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: I can't, I can't be like Mr. Pretentious filmmaker, film, film, film, film,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: cineast guy. You know, when I don't get, when I
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: was physically like, I'm not going to watch the next
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Coen brothers movie because they are in movie jail after
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: doing that shit to me. All right. You know, um
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: so so i mean so yeah you know i mean
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: i'm not saying i have good taste you know i'm
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: just saying that you know i don't know anyway uh
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: but yeah yeah some movies are because some of the
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: movies i've always loved come out a little shrill to
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: me now you know and everything so i think that
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: leads me into like this new obsession i have of
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: like uh and probably why i like burton after reading
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: because i think i've i'm kind of going through a
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: phase right now where i really like movies where nothing
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: happens well yeah you know i mean i think it's.
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: It depends on what level we're talking about because i
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: mean you can get that in some of these like
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: there are ones that are very artsy that also become
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: a what the hell's going on kind of experience or
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: there's just mainstream crap that nothing actually happens so i
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: guess which road are you headed.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Down okay probably the more arty farty uh road all
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: right because you know yes there are movies out there
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: like where a lot uh is there's a lot of
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: movement going on on the screen but actually nothing's happening
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: it's like you know what uh you know sound and
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: you know story strawman thunder you know a bunch of
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: noise that signifies nothing you know like you know everything
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: that has star wars on the.
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: Title so the best movies yes the.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: Best movies i mean though you know everybody's like i
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: am super looking forward to grogu.
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: That's all i gotta say yeah yeah i watched that
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: trailer and i'm like you know he never ceases to
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: deliver for me every time he's on screen i'm like
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: ah i love that guy that guy's great So I
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: don't care how dumb it makes me. I'm like, I
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: don't care. I want to see Grogu kick somebody's ass.
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: I want to see him be super cute. And then
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: he's going to eat stuff and it's going to be awesome.
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: I'm like, I'm not above that either, but I sometimes.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Like, yeah, me neither. I mean, yeah, no, no, I'm
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: not saying this is the only thing I do. And
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: I might be starting to, you know, cycle out of
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: it already, you know, even talking about it. But I
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: think I just, my nervous system needed a detox and,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: and everything. I just needed like a movie that wasn't
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: like plot driven and wasn't about, you know, this happens
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: and this happens. And then the person learns about this.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: And then, you know, like basically the Nicolas Cage rant from, uh, adaptation,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: you know, that, that was basically where I was, you know,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: it was like, I just need something to exist organically
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: in its own space. And, you know, I just said
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: that out loud and I hate myself for saying that
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: out loud. All right. You know, and, uh, and uh
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: but but but anyway so after some of these movies
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: and i you know i'm just such a horror movie
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: junkie i think my nervous system is like i want
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: to watch a movie tonight but i don't want to
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: like go to bed with like a knot of anxiety
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: you know yeah i mean there are.
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: Many times lately that i'm just like because i watch
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: so much for the horror club episodes that i'm like
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: i get to the others times i can watch them
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: i'm like is there anything that's a little lighter?
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: Is there a comedy that I'm not going to think
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: is stupid, which usually is no, they're mostly stupid, but
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: like if I can find something that's a little more fun,
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: that's what I'm looking for.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: Exactly. Exactly. Something, something that just isn't going to get
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: me jangled up, you know, where I can't sleep, you know,
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: I mean, that's sort of the thing. I mean, so
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: I'm going to like, okay, you know, so yeah. I mean,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: I get it, dude. I get it. I mean, you know,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: I mean, back in the 90s and everything, the guy
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: that I said, you know, still has like the scrap
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: of paper I gave him with movies on it. I've
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: got like the number one movie I was recommending on
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: that was Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: Yeah, nothing mainstream people are into more than that one.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Oh my God. Yeah, I'm going to admit. I want
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: a lot of... weird visuals and symbolism i was like yeah.
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: That german expressionism that's what i'm looking for man.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: I'm going like that is totally what i would have
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: recommended in 1995 to somebody wanted to see a good
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: movie you know go like yeah yeah that's me anyway
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: so uh what the hell so anyway you know just
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: this you know in the 90s you go i was
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: really like i want to see the most you know
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: gut wrenching thing I can possibly watch that will re, uh,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: affirm my bleak and nihilistic view of the world.
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: That does sound like you. Yeah.
- 1:06:41Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: And now I, I, you know, I was just like, uh,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: I just want to see a movie that is.
- 1:06:50Speaker 10: Just sort of slowly unfolding, like, like un, like you're
- 1:06:58Speaker 10: slowly unwrapping, you know, like what, one of those like
- 1:07:03Speaker 10: notes you got back in like, you know, elementary school
- 1:07:06Speaker 10: that was all folded in a very specific way.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: You know? And so I just want to kind of
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: like my movie going experience. I just want to slowly
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: open the note fold by fold very methodically. And then
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: just look at what it says. And then I want
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: to fold it all back. And write, you know, maybe
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: in my brain, write something on the back and then
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: hand it to somebody. And that's it. I don't need
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: to be challenged and blown away and rattled by the
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: ridiculous plot mechanisms that is like overloading the people's actions.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: Like that person would never do that. But the plot
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: says they have to. So they're being controlled by like,
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: you know, somebody. uh, malevolent God, you know, that, that,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: you know, it does not have their best interest in hand,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: you know? And so people have no survival instinct or
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: no sense of self-preservation. And, uh, you know, I mean,
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: so I guess I'm just detoxing. I'm detoxing.
- 1:08:09Speaker 5: Your brain works in very different ways. sometimes i'll just
- 1:08:17Speaker 5: put on a movie yeah yeah yeah as opposed to
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: what you just described which seems to me way more
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: rattling than even just putting on a horror movie the
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: way you described it was way more overwhelming than i
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: want to deal with on most given days truthfully.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: I know, man. I feel like the vein in my
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: forehead going. I feel like I'm turning into a Ren
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: and Stimpy cartoon.
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: You can see it in front of you. Just pulsating.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. So I think I'm just a little high
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: strung these days. So I've been trying to watch Stimpy. movies.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: I've been just trying to watch some movies that will not,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: you know, rattle me. And so I watched Picnic at
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Canyon Rock, which was, I don't know if you've seen that.
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: I know of it.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: Sure.
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: It's great. Again, I keep hearing that, and it's one
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: of those I keep putting on the list of like,
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: I think I, maybe I, and then I'm like, no,
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: maybe I didn't. So it's one of those I feel
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: like I need to check off the list, and I
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: don't know that I have.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah, no, it's one of those movies that's on
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: everybody's list that nobody's seen, okay? Yeah.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: Because everybody says like, oh, it's so great, you know,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: and you go like, oh, I'll see it. What's it about?
- 1:09:40Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Brian, it's really about nothing, all right? It's like, just
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: from school, I know it's part of the Australian New
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: Wave and Peter Weir.
- 1:09:53Speaker 5: It's part of, yeah, what I know about it. It's
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: crazy Australia times, which again, most of what they were
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: making at that point is insanity.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: Yeah, no, so this is classy. All right, this is classy.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: All right, this is, it's very interesting movie. There are
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: no sudden movements. Things kind of unfold as they do
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: in life much slower than you would like them to.
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: So does it have to make sense or it just
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: needs to be slow?
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: No, no. Because some just.
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: Sort of things happen for two hours and then you're like, huh.
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: I don't know what any of that meant, but it
- 1:10:38Speaker 5: was slow and metered.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: Yeah, this is slow and metered. I do like things
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: to make a little sense. I do like to be
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: able to You know, I mean, I don't want to
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: just be watching a screensaver.
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: I mean, if that's what works for you, man, you
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: go with it. The colors, man.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was going to find the old
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: Windows Pipe screensaver.
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: I mean, it's pretty impressive.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: Let's be real.
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: I've seen some movies that pale in comparison.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Yes, that's true. The Pipe screensaver was.
- 1:11:10Speaker 5: Also, Flying Toaster is pretty awesome.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: Yeah. I do miss the old Windows player music visualization thing.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I found one online that kind
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: of does it, but it doesn't have the same.
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: I was thinking of working that in as the, like,
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: the video track for episodes.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: Because we're all audio, but, you know, everybody wants everything
- 1:11:35Speaker 5: on YouTube, so I'm trying to find... I've got a
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: weird filmmaking version that I'm also considering and may have
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: done some test shots lately. So I'm like, otherwise I'm
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: going to force that upon people. But if not, it'd
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: be a lot easier to just have the old school
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: visualizer that just has weird shapes and colors going on
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: while you're listening to something.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. I love that.
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: I love it.
- 1:11:57Speaker 8: That's what we need.
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: I found one online where you can hook it up
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: to your Spotify account and watch it. But it doesn't
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: react the same.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: It's just not the same.
- 1:12:09Speaker 6: It's not the same anymore, man.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: It's not the same. Picnic at Hanging Rock, though, is
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: really cool. It's basically turn-of-the-century Australia at this girls' boarding school.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: as like high society teaching these girls, these rich privileged
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: girls to be, you know, uh, pillars of the community and, uh, rules, rules, rules.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: The rules have rules. There's, there's a, there's like layers
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: and layers and they live this very stuffy controlled existence
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: and they go out, you know, after much ado and much, uh, nothing.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: That much ado about nothing. They go to... Speaking of Shakespeare.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Speaking of Shakespeare. They go out to this... It's kind
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: of like... In Georgia, it would be like Stone Mountain.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: It's like some natural rock formation that's out there. I mean,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: it's Australia. It's a place called Hanging Rock. And it's
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: just like these... this rock that's bubbled up out of
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: the earth. It's a volcanic rock. It's not very impressive
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: looking on the movie, but I saw it on Tubi.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: This movie took six hours to watch.
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: This isn't from the Australian Chamber of Commerce, you're saying.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: It's not convincing you to travel there to go visit
- 1:13:30Speaker 5: Hanging Rock.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: No, I mean, it's like if you're just surrounded by
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: scorpions and desert, it's probably... If you go to the grocery,
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: it's like that.
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: I'm basing it on every movie I've seen. That's how
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: it works in Australia.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just basing it on the Mad Max movies.
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: Pretty much, yeah. Every trip, you climb into your car
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: with spikes sticking out of it, and then you drive
- 1:13:55Speaker 5: really fast, and then you light something on fire, and
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: you flip your car. And then you get your milk,
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: and you come home.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: You know, everything's like wake and fright. Did you ever
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: see that? Wake and fright?
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: Yeah, or what's the.
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: Fantastic.
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: Cars that ate pears. That's the car I want. The
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: one with the spikes. I want that car everywhere I
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: go now.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Exactly. And also Peter Weir, and also on my to-watch list,
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: which I.
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: Haven't seen yet. I have seen that one.
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: Okay, cool, cool.
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: Again, that's probably right up your alley, because it's another
- 1:14:26Speaker 5: one of those I knew by reputation, and then I
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: did watch it, and I went, what, what are we, what.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Are we going?
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: Where is this movie going exactly? And then we get
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: there and I'm like, that is not what I thought
- 1:14:37Speaker 5: this movie was going to be.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: So yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: That car is the coolest part.
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: Okay. Okay.
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: Confounding of like, what is this town we're in?
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Like, it's just weird.
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: So this might be your follow up to Picnic at
- 1:14:53Speaker 5: Hanging Rock.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: Who knows? Peter Weir might be my new spirit animal.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: Seems to be.
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: Yeah. He's got a direction.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, exactly. He definitely does. And he doesn't want
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: to get anybody all riled up, you know? And so
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: this movie very, you know, so these boarding school girls
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: go and they're all dressed to the, you know, in
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: like proper English, you know, attire and everything. And they're
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: going to go sit under the rock and have a picnic.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: And it's like, they all got parasols. And they're sitting
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: and reading their, you know, books on geometry. And it's
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: all very, you know, all pre-cell phones. So nobody's scrolling. Everybody's...
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: But there's also just like a lot of, you know, well,
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: you sit in the shade and you just sort of
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: sit and look at everybody. You know, and so, you know,
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: that's what you did. I don't know if you're into.
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: The movie as much as this experience. You just want
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: to live this experience.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: It's like nobody's doing anything. Yeah, nothing's happening. No, no,
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: there's no... There's no drama going on in this. And
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: so eventually what happens is three of the girls go
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: for a walk. Well, four of the girls go for
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: a walk and only one comes back. And so they're
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: told not to climb up on the rocks. And they
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: ignore that and they do. And so you never know.
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: You don't, it's a mystery of what happened to these girls.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: And I was like, is this a true story? And
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: it's not. So everybody, everybody relax. Everybody relax. It's based
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: on a novel. And, but the, it's more about these, the,
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: so this girl go, they should have just said like
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: Texas change. I'll based on a true story.
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: You know, everybody would have been like.
- 1:16:46Speaker 5: Oh, as long as you convince people in, in the
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: true Fargo tie in, right. Based on a true story.
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: Not really.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: There is the hanging rock. That place exists. So they
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: go up there and they walk around and then it's
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: almost just like this place that bubbled up out of
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: the center of the earth is charged with some weird
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: energy and it makes people act weird. Like at one point,
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: the girls all take off their shoes and they lay
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: down in like a square formation, you know, and sleep
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: for like an hour. And then they wake up and
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: then they just sort of wander into the crevices of
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: the rocks. Not in a supernatural way, just they kind
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: of walk off screen behind the rocks and they're never
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: seen again. You don't know what happened and you don't
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: know why it's happening. You only just imagine that You know,
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: the English colony came in and settled in Australia and
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: they brought all their own rules and regulations, but that
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: is not the rules and regulations of Australia. Australia is
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: ancient and wild and there are places that are sacred
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: and have bizarre... you know, energy that you don't, I don't,
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: I don't believe in that, but I, I'm just saying
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: it is kind of like nature has rules that people
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: cannot tame, you know, I guess that's what, there we go.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: That's what the movie is about.
- 1:18:30Speaker 5: I mean, I was just hoping. And then the alien
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: spaceship shows up and they all were beamed away. I
- 1:18:36Speaker 5: was like, that's where I thought it was going. This
- 1:18:40Speaker 5: is like fire in the sky. Yo, I know how
- 1:18:42Speaker 5: this is.
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: It's like, There's no spectacle.
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: Based on a true story. Yeah, I know this movie.
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. the movie is about then the town trying
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: to figure out what happened to the girls.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: And then.
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: one of the girls reappears and doesn't remember what happened
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: and kind of, kind of like an abduct, abduction, but that,
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: but nobody, but everybody's like, and there's so much guilt
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: and like, and they can't believe that this girl doesn't
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: remember what happened to the other girls. So they, she
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: becomes like a pariah, you know? And so it's really
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: interesting story about small town and gossip and about how
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: a town or how a, civilization reacts to things that
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: can't be explained, you know? Um, so it's, it's great
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: that no, no shot is quicker than, you know, 45 seconds.
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: Two and a half minutes. We just hang there.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: We just, we're just, I was going like, ah, and
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: I was just watching it going like, oh man, feel
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: this movie breathe, you know, look, All the scenes just
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: have room to stretch out, you know, and breathe. And
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: I was just like, this is incredible. This is totally
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: what I'm into. I'm hooked on this kind of non-provoking,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: interesting movies that you can watch and digest as you
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: watch them. Not like you're not digesting. beaten over the
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: head every second while you're watching it and then the
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: movie's over and you just feel bludgeoned and like, what did.
- 1:20:22Speaker 5: I just watch?
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: What happened? I didn't even get to think about it
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: while it was happening, you know? And it's just like,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: now it's over and I don't even know what the
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: last 90 minutes were. I just feel like I got
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: shook by somebody.
- 1:20:38Speaker 5: I mean, to me that seems like a lot to
- 1:20:41Speaker 5: deal with where you were very specifically trying to avoid that.
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: So I don't know about your judgment on these movies.
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: No, no.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: But it was good. It was good. It was just
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: a very metered pacing and it sort of unfolded as
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: you would feel life unfolds, you know. So it was good.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: It was good. Whew. What do you have left?
- 1:21:08Speaker 5: Um, I did just trying to get caught up for
- 1:21:11Speaker 5: events that are, well, have taken over. This is, again,
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: being way behind the times, but I did finally watch Sinners.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: Oh, hey, there we go.
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: And this is for future generations. This is at the
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: point in time that we don't know how many Oscars
- 1:21:27Speaker 5: it won. But that was half my reason. It is
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: up for the most Oscars ever, and I haven't gotten
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: around to it yet. And there's no reason because I
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: like everything involved in this, so why haven't I seen
- 1:21:39Speaker 5: it yet? So I finally just was like, okay, and
- 1:21:41Speaker 5: that's what I'm watching this weekend. So I watched it,
- 1:21:43Speaker 5: and it's pretty awesome.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: Okay, yeah. I enjoyed the hell out of it myself. I've, uh,
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: it's interesting. Uh, some of the people I've talked about,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: talked to thought it was like, meh, you know? And
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: I go like, okay, no, I really had a great
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: experience seeing it. And, uh, you know, I, I, the
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: things that they're saying meh about, I get, but, uh,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: I thought it was a really good movie.
- 1:22:12Speaker 5: It's, it's interesting that it got as popular as it did.
- 1:22:15Speaker 5: And I guess maybe it's the weirder aspect that makes
- 1:22:19Speaker 5: it more mainstream because it's, it's, I mean, I knew
- 1:22:23Speaker 5: it because people have been talking about it for a
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: year now, but I'm just like, if you didn't know
- 1:22:27Speaker 5: any better, I mean, it's like you walked into from
- 1:22:29Speaker 5: dust till dawn, like two thirds of the movie is
- 1:22:34Speaker 5: a period piece about, you know, horrible white people trying
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: to keep you down and how society is and, these
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: people trying to build up a life, you know, and
- 1:22:45Speaker 5: like all of that just operates like a normal period
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: piece until you get to that last third. And you're like, wait, wait, what?
- 1:22:53Speaker 5: What are we?
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: What?
- 1:22:54Speaker 5: Except I knew it was coming. So I was like
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: the whole time I'm like, well, he's doing a good
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: job setting up the world they're in. And like that
- 1:23:01Speaker 5: in the end, it's like, they're kind of doing that
- 1:23:03Speaker 5: thing of like, you know, anything, any type of message
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: you're trying to put out there in a movie is
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: you can tell just as easily in genre. So it's like,
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: that's what he's doing. So like by the end you're like, Oh,
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: and now we made it a secret horror movie. But
- 1:23:18Speaker 5: at the same time, the thing we just conveyed to
- 1:23:22Speaker 5: you was all the other goings on in the day
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: to day. This one day of their life tells you
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: everything you need to know about these characters and all
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: the people they're surrounded by and the world they live in.
- 1:23:33Speaker 5: All of that is immersive in its own way.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:23:37Speaker 5: Along the road. and then you get there and be
- 1:23:40Speaker 5: like oh by the way vampires so like it's it
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: like throws that in as the curveball at the end
- 1:23:45Speaker 5: if you didn't know if for some reason you made
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: it that far in and didn't know it was gonna
- 1:23:49Speaker 5: happen but yeah it totally works before you get that
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: if that never happened i'd be like well this would
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: still be up for oscars it just has such an
- 1:24:00Speaker 5: extra little oh yeah, and by the way, this, like,
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: this is, like, maybe the thing that makes it more
- 1:24:07Speaker 5: palatable for mainstream type people, I don't know, but I'm like,
- 1:24:11Speaker 5: maybe it's something that only Oscar people would have watched
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: if it didn't have that last third, but now it's, like,
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: people heard ahead of time, like, oh, it's kind of
- 1:24:20Speaker 5: like a horror movie, okay, maybe I'll go see this, so, like,
- 1:24:23Speaker 5: and then you get the treat that, you know, by
- 1:24:25Speaker 5: the way, Ryan Coogler knows what he's doing. Like, yeah,
- 1:24:29Speaker 5: he is like an amazing filmmaker. Like you get to
- 1:24:32Speaker 5: that shot built around music and I'm just watching that
- 1:24:36Speaker 5: just mesmerized. I'm just like the way he's moving the
- 1:24:40Speaker 5: camera and weaving through people and just doing this whole
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: bigger thing. I'm just like, that's so impressive that I'm
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: just like, yeah, I, and you can throw in vampires too.
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: I'm fine with it. Like, this is all good.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: No, No, no, no, no, no.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: What?
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: You nailed it right there. The movie?
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: I don't care if it's the Oscar remix of From
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: Dusk Till Dawn.
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: Which it kind of is, but.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: It's like, let's take a Dimension movie and give it
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: like big old Warner Brothers production. You know, and let's
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: give this... Let's spare no expense, but let's remake From
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: Dusk Till Dawn for like, you know... the highbrow crowd. And, uh, and, and, uh,
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: I mean, even right now, just forget that vampire show
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: up halfway through the movie. The movie is about two
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: gangster brothers, you know, who are, you know, you know,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: trying to, you know get to like some kind of
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: you know better state of thing.
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: You know it's like very day in the life for
- 1:25:47Speaker 5: most of that movie that you're just like this is
- 1:25:50Speaker 5: all like it's not gonna do a bigger story it's
- 1:25:53Speaker 5: only telling and by the end you don't get a
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: bigger story because of what happened but like if that
- 1:25:59Speaker 5: didn't happen all we're getting is this we're back in
- 1:26:02Speaker 5: town we're These are the people we know. We're trying
- 1:26:05Speaker 5: to put this business together. Like, it's very in the
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: moment piecing together how things work in their lives. And, like,
- 1:26:12Speaker 5: that's impressive in and of itself. And then you throw
- 1:26:16Speaker 5: this other crazy curveball in.
- 1:26:18Speaker 8: What?
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: Yeah, folk dancing vampires, you know. Yeah, you know, I
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: always knew something was evil about Riverdance. And this movie completely,
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: you know, got me. Confirmed my belief.
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: It's actually, by the end, it's, I guess, spoilers. But, like,
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: it almost tacks on an extra, oh, yeah, and white
- 1:26:38Speaker 5: people suck. The very end.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: But then before that, they're like, well, we also want
- 1:26:43Speaker 5: these white people to suck. But it's okay, they're Irish.
- 1:26:46Speaker 5: so like right we can make fun of.
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: The irish it's fine yeah yeah yeah yeah they're not
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: really white.
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: People they're a different breed i get to say that
- 1:26:56Speaker 5: i can make fun of the drunk irish people so
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: it's fine but yeah i was wondering like it does
- 1:27:01Speaker 5: give it a different spin that it's like well they're
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: not just regular white people they're this other put upon
- 1:27:07Speaker 5: group of people that are like their own weird bastardized
- 1:27:10Speaker 5: version of the rest of society looks down on them,
- 1:27:13Speaker 5: even though they're white, they like still get looked down upon.
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: And on top of that, they're vampires.
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: Well, it's like, it's like the oppressed or like the, the,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: the people with nothing, they have their culture, you know?
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: And so even the vampires had their culture. I mean,
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: a lot of people are saying it's about white appropriation
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: or appropriation of culture, or like, so the vampires are
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: like literally appropriating, uh, Uh, so it's making the, like
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: the vampirism, like a literal thing, but you know, I mean,
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: I guess that's what people are saying, but I mean,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: I saw like the white people was like, they were Irish,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: you know, poor dirt people. They weren't like the KKK
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: people that show up, you know, it's like, uh, they're
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: not like part of the mainstream society. They're, they're kind
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: of like, you know, sharecroppers too, you know? And so like,
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: but you know, what, uh, George Miller's, uh, when he
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: was about, I'm reading the whole book on making Fury
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: Road right now and everything.
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: It's great.
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: It's great. He's insane.
- 1:28:12Speaker 5: That movie was that.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: No, dude, Fury Road, the making of Fury Road is, uh,
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: a tale for all time. All right. It's, uh, it's, it's,
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: it's amazing. The, the crazy resources he had for me from, um,
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: Making those Penguin movies gave him so many, so much
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: carte blanche with Warner Brothers to make this.
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: Like, do whatever you want.
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Do whatever you want.
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
- 1:28:38Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: You don't know who you're saying that to, right? All right.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: All right. I'll do that. Yeah. Yeah. So, oh, man.
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: I started talking about Fury Rose. I got distracted. Anyway, so,
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: we're talking about sinners. Okay, but he said, George Miller said,
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: even in, like, that have no material possessions, they make
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: beautiful art, you know? And it's not like they're living
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: in dregs. I mean, they make things. Like, indigenous cultures,
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: they have fantastic art direction.
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: I think that's just humanity. Like, it's part of what
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: we are. We need, or at least some beautification need
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: to do that so again maybe it's in your tribe
- 1:29:26Speaker 5: like these people are the specific ones that need to
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: do that and the rest of us are gonna go
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: make dinner and you know right some clothes but like
- 1:29:34Speaker 5: there's some people that are like they need to do
- 1:29:37Speaker 5: that and like that's again you latch on to that
- 1:29:40Speaker 5: as the filmmakers like that they're the one that need
- 1:29:43Speaker 5: then that's kind of the message of this i feel
- 1:29:45Speaker 5: like too is like they're The musicians are, like, these
- 1:29:48Speaker 5: are the storytellers, and that's also true of our director.
- 1:29:51Speaker 5: It's like, you are the storyteller. You are taking these
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: stories and, like, capturing them and delivering them to other
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: people and, like, preserving them, and you pass them on
- 1:30:01Speaker 5: through generations as we, like, keep watching these movies. You
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: are telling these tales over and over again. So, yeah,
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: it's like, I feel like it has a bigger artistic
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: value to it than just, oh, yeah, vampires, like.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: Yeah, white people suck and they're vampires and they're absorbing
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: our culture. I didn't really get that. I saw it
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: as like, yeah, vampires were kind of like also hunted
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: down citizens. They had a lot in common with the
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: black characters in the movie.
- 1:30:36Speaker 5: What I thought was interesting, once it becomes a bigger thing,
- 1:30:40Speaker 5: then it felt like vampirism was a cult. Because it
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: very– like by the time so many– like when they
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: take out that whole group of people and then they're
- 1:30:49Speaker 5: all part– they're like, it's better here. Come with us.
- 1:30:53Speaker 5: Like we can save you. Like they literally– like we
- 1:30:56Speaker 5: can save you. And I was just like, wow. This
- 1:30:59Speaker 5: is just a crazy religious cult that's built around– but
- 1:31:02Speaker 5: they all legitimately see– it was almost like you're– of
- 1:31:07Speaker 5: the body snatchers like everyone is different and you're the
- 1:31:11Speaker 5: outlier like you're the freak at this point and like
- 1:31:14Speaker 5: why are you fighting it if everyone else is happy
- 1:31:17Speaker 5: and they're all of the same mind literally in this
- 1:31:20Speaker 5: sense but you're fighting it still like are you wrong
- 1:31:23Speaker 5: like i feel like that part was way more interesting
- 1:31:28Speaker 5: and i didn't expect that out of it too so
- 1:31:30Speaker 5: it's It's got like several different levels going on. And
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: I'm like, no, this has got a lot of different
- 1:31:35Speaker 5: things to say that you wouldn't necessarily expect out of
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: a period drama. You wouldn't necessarily expect out of a
- 1:31:42Speaker 5: vampire movie. But this has both of them and a
- 1:31:45Speaker 5: lot of other things too.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: Yeah. So you've got that stuff in it. And there
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: are hanging chads. There are hanging threads that don't get
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: wrapped up. There are imperfect things about the movie, like
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: the Native American vampire hunters never make another appearance. And
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: that was an interesting thing that could have been fleshed
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: out more. I was confused. I went into this movie
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: completely cold. I didn't know it was a vampire movie, even.
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: I mean, I just saw... You don't get out, do you?
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: I know. I just saw like, oh, there's this movie.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: Michael B. Jordan's in it. He's good. Yeah, he's amazing.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: It's got like a 99% on the aggregator and everything. So, hey,
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: that's good. I've got– so I took my son to
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: see it too, which was good. It was good because
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: it's basically like– They basically give step-by-step of cunnilingus. I'm
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: going like, well, this is like a public service announcement.
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: This is educational on a lot of levels. I was
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: going like, there's women in the audience going like, you
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: need to be writing this down.
- 1:33:02Speaker 5: Yeah, you need to be taking notes.
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: Take a note. Take a note.
- 1:33:06Speaker 5: No excuse. Notice how he's concerned about what she's experiencing.
- 1:33:13Speaker 5: Think about that when you get home.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. That's right. Look, this is really
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: like an after school special here.
- 1:33:25Speaker 5: Hey, look, it's not all about you. Which is maybe
- 1:33:28Speaker 5: a bigger takeaway from this. Hey, you know, your culture
- 1:33:32Speaker 5: isn't the only thing that's important, by the way.
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. Exactly. It all ties together. You know,
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: that's why it's a good movie. That's why it's going
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: to win all the Oscars. Okay. So, whatever. There's like
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: a lot of stuff. But I didn't know. Okay, I
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: didn't know anything. And there's only one Michael B. Jordan
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: on the poster. So, I was so confused.
- 1:33:50Speaker 5: There's only one Michael B.
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: Jordan.
- 1:33:51Speaker 5: I don't know if you know that, but. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: And so I didn't know. I was going like, what's
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: going on? I know I'm not wearing my glasses, so
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: I don't really. Is that two Michael B. Jordans in
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: the movie? Or am I losing my mind? Or what's
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: going on? And why does this feel like the parent
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: trap or dead ringers? Or is that what they're doing?
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: You just aren't.
- 1:34:16Speaker 5: Familiar with his twin brother, Michael C.
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: Jordan.
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: I mean.
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: Right, right. Michael A. Jordan and Michael B. Jordan.
- 1:34:23Speaker 5: He's in some of the movies, but you just didn't
- 1:34:25Speaker 5: notice because they look a lot alike.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: I was thrown out of the movie. I was going like,
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: I don't understand why my mind is trying to see
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: two Michael B. Jordans.
- 1:34:39Speaker 5: You were thrown by the most basic of these things.
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: Absolutely i was going like i'm enjoying this movie but
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: i was kind of like mad that i was going
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: like why didn't they just hire two different actors what
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: is the point.
- 1:34:50Speaker 5: I mean i was thinking that i was like they
- 1:34:51Speaker 5: could have just been brothers they didn't have to be
- 1:34:54Speaker 5: twins and the story would have worked the same like
- 1:34:57Speaker 5: to me i always question that because i'm like you
- 1:34:59Speaker 5: just made it so much harder for yourself like right
- 1:35:03Speaker 5: what are you doing like if you just hire two
- 1:35:04Speaker 5: guys You don't have to shoot any of this with
- 1:35:07Speaker 5: extra coverage twice. This over here with that screen and
- 1:35:10Speaker 5: this playing this out. And like, you just get two
- 1:35:12Speaker 5: guys and they remember their lines and you're done.
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: You just made it so much harder.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: Was Michael B. Jordan just like, I don't want to
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: be upstaged by anybody, so I'm just going to cast
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: me because when Oscar time comes, I am not going
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: to get passed over for the other guy. I don't
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: want it questionable.
- 1:35:32Speaker 5: Which one is the lead and which one is the
- 1:35:34Speaker 5: supporting actor.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: I'm the both. I'm the both. If I steal the
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: scene from myself, that's fine.
- 1:35:42Speaker 5: I'll win either way.
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: I'm going like, there's a lot of actors who could
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: have played that second brother. And I don't. It'd be different.
- 1:35:52Speaker 5: If it was necessary. Like if you referenced the parent trap.
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: It is the reason the parent trap. No, I never
- 1:35:58Speaker 5: stood the Lindsay Lohan version because she was a nobody then.
- 1:36:01Speaker 5: So I'm like, why didn't you just hire kids that
- 1:36:03Speaker 5: were twins and you're done? But at least this is
- 1:36:06Speaker 5: Michael B. Jordan. He is a movie star. So it's
- 1:36:09Speaker 5: like you understand why you want to bring him in.
- 1:36:11Speaker 5: but it's not essential to the story that they're telling
- 1:36:14Speaker 5: that they be identical twins like no it's just about
- 1:36:18Speaker 5: brothers being brothers and wanting to take care of each
- 1:36:20Speaker 5: other and like that all works whether you're twins or
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: not so like absolutely i don't really understand like i
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: was like fine with it but i was just like
- 1:36:28Speaker 5: the more i thought about i was like why did
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: he other than yeah maybe michael b jordan was just
- 1:36:33Speaker 5: like nope this is my movie like you get that
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: fancy camera that can go back and track this again.
- 1:36:39Speaker 5: And I'm going to shoot both sides.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, that's just how good of an actor.
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: And I'm going like, you know, I mean, if you want, yeah,
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: he's nothing, but I'm going like, you know, you know,
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: from dust till dawn, they didn't like high, Trentino didn't
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: play both the brothers, you know?
- 1:36:57Speaker 5: I mean, at least I could put up with two Clooney's,
- 1:37:00Speaker 5: but like maybe one of them has the Clooney hair
- 1:37:03Speaker 5: and one of them doesn't have the Clooney hair. And
- 1:37:05Speaker 5: that's how you can tell them apart.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm like, I get it. One had a goatee and,
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: you know, but I was just like, but I was like,
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: but I was like looking beyond the goatee going like,
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: is that Michael also Michael B.
- 1:37:17Speaker 5: Jordan?
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: Anyway, I was just going like, I'm just, I was
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: so confused. And so I should have read a synopsis
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: or something about the movie that there was identical twins.
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: And I was like, well, like, oh, this is all
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: a special effect. This is all dead ringer thing. I
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: wasn't expecting it. Anyway, I got over it. Once I
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: realized what they were doing, I was like, okay, but
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: I just would, you know, if you want, I'm sure
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: somebody else could have done fine in that second role. Anyway,
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: but Kugler's flexing his, you know, and anyway, so whatever.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: But despite all this frustration and everything, I don't care
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: about any of that. all right, I don't care about
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: the vampires, I don't care, I mean, I love all
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: the trappings, I love the immersive world they built, and
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: the showing a side that you don't see in movies
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: very often, and it was like, it was like, it
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: was like, you know, just like the color purple, it
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: was just like something that just really focused on the
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: black experience at that time, in that place, and I'm
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: going like, okay, fantastic, I don't care about any of that,
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: because when it comes down to it, as all this
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: in the theater projected as only you should ever watch
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: a movie, you know, and, uh, and, uh, you nailed
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: it right out of the box there, Brian, the scene
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: where he finally starts playing in the club and it
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: becomes like this dream logic thing of time crossing and
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: the filmmaking, uh, extraordinary skill, uh, and everything coming together.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: And it was just, it was like, uh, like I,
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: felt like I was on drugs or something. It was
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: just like, I was just like, this is, you know,
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: the cinematic highlight of this year and everything, because that
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: just gelled and it was worth, you know, going through the, uh, uh,
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: from dust till dawn remake for just to get to
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: that scene. And for it, you know, had it been,
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: you know, it built it up. Because you're going like, wow,
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: this kid must be really good playing and everything and
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: tease it a little bit and all that stuff. But
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: then when it's finally his time, you're so with that
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: character and so wanting him to succeed and so wanting
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: to have his time in the spotlight. And when he
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: does it and it transcends time and space, you're like,
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: this is the movie right here. This is the scene
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: of the movie. That is the movie, you know? So yeah,
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: I'm with you.
- 1:40:05Speaker 5: It's pretty impressive. I got to the end. I'm like, yeah,
- 1:40:09Speaker 5: all that stuff. People said they're not wrong. I was like,
- 1:40:12Speaker 5: there's a reason it's up for a whole bunch of Oscars. Cause,
- 1:40:15Speaker 5: it's good. The people are good. The directing is amazing.
- 1:40:18Speaker 5: Like it's, they're all right. Like I'm not arguing any
- 1:40:22Speaker 5: of this.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: It's fantastic. It's fantastic.
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: I would say it's a, yeah. If it wins, that's great.
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: You know, uh, uh, good for everybody. I feel like
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: it's got to win.
- 1:40:34Speaker 5: It's up for so many, like it's got to get
- 1:40:37Speaker 5: some of them.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: Is it really the most nominated?
- 1:40:40Speaker 5: I think it is. I think it set a record
- 1:40:42Speaker 5: for the most nominations for one movie.
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: Yeah. So horror movie, uh, uh, you know, I love it. Uh,
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: people who, you know, like vampires, you know, uh, cashed
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: in i mean it's good it's good for the whole
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: genre yeah you know we're now we're gonna get what
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: what oscar treatment should we do next for an old horror.
- 1:41:02Speaker 5: Movie i mean we're kind of at that point anyway
- 1:41:05Speaker 5: they're redoing all the classics as sort of artsy like
- 1:41:09Speaker 5: you're invisible man and.
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: You're oh yeah yeah werewolf.
- 1:41:13Speaker 5: One and we're getting a mummy one now and we
- 1:41:15Speaker 5: got a dracula and like we're getting like yeah we're
- 1:41:18Speaker 5: getting all these like super upscale versions of classic monster
- 1:41:22Speaker 5: movies so i mean this this really isn't that different
- 1:41:25Speaker 5: it's just a little more generalized with like yeah and
- 1:41:28Speaker 5: vampires or whatever you know like but yeah they're kind
- 1:41:31Speaker 5: of doing that anyway.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: I'm just waiting for uh anthony hopkins nominated performance on
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: the uh souped up ghoulies remake you know they better
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: hurry up they'll get you in the end.
- 1:41:47Speaker 5: As long as there's a toilet on the poster that's.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: The ghoulies the ghoulies reboot is no it's gonna be
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: called uh gobble knobs or something you know and uh
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: but it takes place uh It takes place in World
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: War I in the trenches.
- 1:42:06Speaker 5: I don't think you can change the title, man. The
- 1:42:10Speaker 5: whole reason for rebooting it is to build on the brand.
- 1:42:14Speaker 5: You can't change the title. What's wrong with you?
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: No, we take a plot from a horror movie from
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: the 80s or the 90s and we just ignore that
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: it's the plot. But we just A-list the hell out
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: of it, you know? And then people say, wait a minute,
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: that's the plot of this movie. And I go, whatever, whatever.
- 1:42:35Speaker 5: This is so much better than when I saw it
- 1:42:37Speaker 5: as Critters 2.
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: I can't wait for the Oscar.
- 1:42:42Speaker 5: They bring back DiCaprio. Directed by Martin Scorsese, starring The Returnal.
- 1:42:49Speaker 5: It's a reboot. We pick up with DiCaprio's character from
- 1:42:53Speaker 5: the first movie, but we're just going to call it.
- 1:42:55Speaker 5: That's the trick. You call it the same title as
- 1:42:57Speaker 5: you did the first time. So it's Critters 2. But
- 1:43:00Speaker 5: we're picking up where we left off before with the
- 1:43:03Speaker 5: character as he's now a grown man and, you know.
- 1:43:06Speaker 5: What's happened to him since the last time we saw
- 1:43:09Speaker 5: him fighting Critters?
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: No, you found the joke is them remaking Critters with
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: Mars Corsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. Yeah, there we go. That's it.
- 1:43:22Speaker 5: You just wait for the Oscars to start rolling in.
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Most nominated movie.
- 1:43:28Speaker 5: Of all time.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: It's three and a half hours long.
- 1:43:33Speaker 5: And it's straight to Netflix.
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: It's straight to Netflix.
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: Holy shit. Oh, my God. All right. I've got one here.
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: I don't know which one to... So I've watched about
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: four really boring movies, okay?
- 1:43:51Speaker 5: You did say that's your MO.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: You're right, right. We'll talk about this one. Uh, it's
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: cause we're talking about Oscar season. Okay. So I watched
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: the Ethan Hawke blue moon movie, uh, by link letter.
- 1:44:04Speaker 5: I do like some Ethan Hawke. I gotta say he's right.
- 1:44:07Speaker 5: He continues to deliver like, yeah. And for somebody who's
- 1:44:11Speaker 5: like gotten himself up to like being Oscar level, he
- 1:44:15Speaker 5: also like shows up for black foam and is great. Like,
- 1:44:19Speaker 5: you know, it's like he, he doesn't, He doesn't turn
- 1:44:22Speaker 5: down stuff because of, you know, he was in a
- 1:44:25Speaker 5: Marvel series, for God's sakes. Like, he's not too fancy
- 1:44:29Speaker 5: to be able to just show up and work. And, like,
- 1:44:31Speaker 5: he does other stuff and kind of classes those up.
- 1:44:34Speaker 5: And then he'll show up and get nominated for an Oscar. So, like,
- 1:44:37Speaker 5: he really does kind of deliver across the board.
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: He does, he does. I like him more now than
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: back in the reality bites days.
- 1:44:46Speaker 5: I mean, you know you were just a little jealous
- 1:44:49Speaker 5: back in the 90s. You're like, why is Winona with him?
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: With him, right, right. Obviously she loves me.
- 1:44:59Speaker 5: I'm way more like the other dorky guy.
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: How come she chose him just because he's pretty?
- 1:45:05Speaker 5: Okay, fine.
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: Right, right, right. Right, so yeah, he was too much
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: of a Hollywood pretty boy for me back in the
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: day and everything. But now he's like all, you know,
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: he's getting a little like, you know, he's starting to
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: look like the guy from Life Force. So I'm like,
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: I don't have to be. We all get there.
- 1:45:24Speaker 5: I can't call enough for that one.
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: That's it, that's it. So anyway, this movie's great. Nothing happens.
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: It was fantastic.
- 1:45:34Speaker 11: It was about, you know, it's just about... uh, you know,
- 1:45:40Speaker 11: artistic jealousy and is about, uh, you know, trying, why,
- 1:45:47Speaker 11: why does some things catch and something don't.
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: And so basically it's kind of funny. It's like this guy,
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: you know, him and his, uh, you know, it's Rogers
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: and Hammerstein, but it's not as, it's like before it's anyway,
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm not, I'm not that big of
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: a theater person, but it's, uh, So it's the people
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: that wrote.
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: It's actually really good. It's actually pretty good. So the
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: writing duo wrote Blue Moon. And no matter how much
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: else they wrote, everybody just knows Blue Moon. This guy
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: wrote like a million songs. And great songs. But for
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: whatever reason, Blue Moon is the one that everybody knows.
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: And so... uh, outside of, uh, Broadway circles. Okay. So
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: these two guys have made all these great Broadway musicals
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: and then they split up because the person Ethan Hawke
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: is playing has got a terrible drinking problem. And so
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: it was always, always a problem, you know? And so the,
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: the guy has gone on to, uh, get another partner
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: as Rogers and Hammerstein is the new partnership. And they
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: just came out with Oklahoma, uh, And it's basically Ethan
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: Hawke is the biggest, most successful opening of any Broadway
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: show ever. After this guy has worked with his partner
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: for 20 years, they break up and then the guy
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: goes and he writes, you know, basically makes Titanic of
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: the day, you know? And so it's about Ethan just
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: being bitter and at the bar while he's it's very
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: much like a stage play. You know, it's like he's
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: at the bar, he's talking to the bartender and he's just,
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: you know, waxing poetic about his career and everything. And
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: he's like obsessed with this young ingenue, you know, that,
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: you know, he's, you know, 30 years older than, but,
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: you know, just like worships the, well, you know, just
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: worships bows to her just to be in her presence
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: for just a moment you know it's it's very it's
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: no dignity or anything.
- 1:48:09Speaker 5: That sounds about right yeah that's.
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: How i operate yeah yeah yeah yeah so you know
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: and he just fawns over her but she's there's no
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: interest there you know uh uh from her and so
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: but so it's.
- 1:48:21Speaker 5: Just yeah that's all tracks by the way yeah yeah
- 1:48:24Speaker 5: it's like say yeah yeah yeah that was.
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: Just about this sad guy at a bar you know
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: his you know and he's trying to like rekindle the
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: artistic spark that he used to have to to be
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: successful again and get himself back on the thing but
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: he's just got so much uh baggage he just you
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: know he's just an alcoholic and he just can't stay
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: away from it you know he's too insecure to to
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: get away from it all You know, and so it's good. But,
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: I mean, it is just like sitting and watching Ethan
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: Hawke talk for two and a half hours, you know.
- 1:49:01Speaker 5: So it's like the Sunrise Trilogy Linklater.
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 1:49:05Speaker 5: Because I was like, he's so, like, pendulum. Like, he
- 1:49:08Speaker 5: does such different types of movies sometimes. And then other
- 1:49:11Speaker 5: times he totally does this. So, yeah, this feels like
- 1:49:14Speaker 5: more of the Before Sunrise typo. Linklater.
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:49:20Speaker 8: Exactly.
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: It's very metered and very slow, but it's a great performance,
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: and I see why he got nominated. My favorite Ethan
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: Hawke moment of any movie is this movie called Premonition.
- 1:49:34Speaker 5: Predestination. Oh, I've seen it and it's, yeah, it's amazing.
- 1:49:40Speaker 5: But talk about a movie that's going to overwhelm you. Like, yes,
- 1:49:43Speaker 5: do not think too much on this or your brain
- 1:49:45Speaker 5: will break. It just will.
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: There's, So, yeah, you know how insane that movie is.
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: It's a lot. It's a lot. I think it's a
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: Philip K. Dick story, maybe. I don't know.
- 1:50:00Speaker 5: It feels like it.
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: Yeah, this was written by a crazy person. But there's
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: that scene that the whole movie is kind of leading
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: up to where the main character woman walks into the
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: bar and finds old Ethan Hawke in there. And he's completely...
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: and completely wrapped up into conspiracy. And I just thought
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: that scene, that movie, and then when you realize everybody's
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: true identity, it's just so nuts how that scene is.
- 1:50:34Speaker 5: Then you get to the end of the movie, you're like,
- 1:50:35Speaker 5: oh no, I understand the crazy. That all makes sense now.
- 1:50:38Speaker 5: That all makes sense.
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, fantastic. I mean, I would... Sometimes when
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: you see, say, like sinners... That musical number is the movie.
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: It's like, for me, it's like sometimes a movie can
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: be fine, but then it's like there's that scene where
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: it gels. And it's like, I don't care about the
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: rest of the movie. I will buy that or I
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: will recommend that movie just on how that scene came.
- 1:51:08Speaker 8: Together, you know?
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: Yeah, so. Yeah, Blue Moon, recommend it.
- 1:51:13Speaker 5: Well, if we eventually get around it out, I've got
- 1:51:17Speaker 5: one more that I definitely wanted to get to only
- 1:51:21Speaker 5: because it was important to me. I mean, I knew
- 1:51:28Speaker 5: I wanted to watch it, but as I got into it,
- 1:51:30Speaker 5: I was like, yeah, there's just so much of like
- 1:51:32Speaker 5: a good portion of why this show exists sort of
- 1:51:35Speaker 5: came off of this. If not the talking part, certainly
- 1:51:39Speaker 5: the talking to other people out there in the world part.
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: Right on.
- 1:51:43Speaker 5: So I watched Tura. And I say it like that
- 1:51:46Speaker 5: because there is an exclamation point at the end.
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: Tura.
- 1:51:49Speaker 5: Oh. And it is the documentary on Tura Satana.
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: Fantastic. Okay. Okay.
- 1:51:57Speaker 5: And I, it's funny. It had been so long. This
- 1:52:01Speaker 5: had been in the works. It was at the end
- 1:52:03Speaker 5: of it. I went, wait, didn't I help make this?
- 1:52:07Speaker 5: They started it as a Kickstarter.
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:52:09Speaker 5: And I went back, like, I dug because my email
- 1:52:12Speaker 5: has been around forever, and I was like, wait, and
- 1:52:14Speaker 5: I went back and found, yeah, I contributed to it.
- 1:52:18Speaker 5: So I was like, hey, I helped make this movie. So.
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: Okay, please tell me, because it's on my list. I
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: think it's on Prime that I can just watch it.
- 1:52:27Speaker 5: Yeah, it just, that's the thing. It's been, I mean, technically,
- 1:52:31Speaker 5: I think its credit is, like, a 2024 movie, but, like,
- 1:52:34Speaker 5: it just sort of started showing up in a lot
- 1:52:36Speaker 5: of streaming places, so... Right, right. it may be something
- 1:52:39Speaker 5: that people haven't been able to watch up until now.
- 1:52:41Speaker 5: So that's why I kind of wanted to throw it
- 1:52:42Speaker 5: out there for people anyway. It was like, yeah, if
- 1:52:45Speaker 5: it is like, that's the thing. I knew her story.
- 1:52:49Speaker 5: So I knew the, the overview of it. And like, it's,
- 1:52:52Speaker 5: it's heavy, like from the get go, like she lives
- 1:52:56Speaker 5: such an amazing life. And like any of the first
- 1:52:59Speaker 5: few things would have taken out most people. And like
- 1:53:02Speaker 5: somehow she's still like made it past that. just to
- 1:53:07Speaker 5: become a teenager to move into the burlesque world.
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:53:12Speaker 5: So I guess just to give you fair warning of
- 1:53:15Speaker 5: what you're getting into, because first off the part that I,
- 1:53:18Speaker 5: the part that I found out from her, that's the
- 1:53:21Speaker 5: other takeaway is I, I, it was one of the
- 1:53:24Speaker 5: first people, I guess the first like real celebrity, the
- 1:53:28Speaker 5: first person from movies that I talked to that I
- 1:53:32Speaker 5: was like, Oh, this is amazing. Like, this is what
- 1:53:35Speaker 5: I want to do. Like, this is for good or bad.
- 1:53:39Speaker 5: There have been a lot of versions since then. But
- 1:53:41Speaker 5: this was many years ago. And it was pre the show. Like,
- 1:53:45Speaker 5: I started a print magazine. And I, like, one of
- 1:53:49Speaker 5: the first, you know, I'd seen... faster pussycat and was
- 1:53:52Speaker 5: fascinated with it and i think it's it's its own
- 1:53:55Speaker 5: weird masterpiece and i'm like i she was coming i
- 1:53:59Speaker 5: had to drive like a extensive distance for me because
- 1:54:03Speaker 5: now i never drive anywhere outside of town it's just
- 1:54:06Speaker 5: i don't need to be driving that far anymore but
- 1:54:09Speaker 5: um we like misty and i made a road trip
- 1:54:11Speaker 5: to go see her because she was coming to do
- 1:54:13Speaker 5: a convention and and put together an interview and like
- 1:54:16Speaker 5: sat and talked to her and she was amazing and
- 1:54:20Speaker 5: so cool And it was like, that's the thing. It's like,
- 1:54:23Speaker 5: there's been a lot of weird variations, but I'm like,
- 1:54:25Speaker 5: if this is it, if this is how cool everybody is,
- 1:54:28Speaker 5: I want to do this all the time. And like,
- 1:54:29Speaker 5: there's been a lot of crazy trips in between there
- 1:54:33Speaker 5: for me, but like that was the one that kicked
- 1:54:35Speaker 5: it off. And that was the one that made me
- 1:54:37Speaker 5: appreciate just sitting down and talking to somebody who's like
- 1:54:40Speaker 5: this cool, fascinating person that I wanted to keep doing
- 1:54:44Speaker 5: it and led me down this road. I've made it
- 1:54:48Speaker 5: this far. But that being said, I knew, like, the
- 1:54:52Speaker 5: first thing I think I learned from her was the whole,
- 1:54:58Speaker 5: the thing that was done to her family, which I
- 1:55:01Speaker 5: think at the time, like, growing up, this is one
- 1:55:03Speaker 5: of those weird things where it's funny that as a country,
- 1:55:06Speaker 5: even more so these days, the things we don't discuss
- 1:55:10Speaker 5: about our country. Like, we're involved in World War II,
- 1:55:15Speaker 5: and those people, nazi bastards and they were taking people
- 1:55:19Speaker 5: and putting them in camps and the horrible things they
- 1:55:22Speaker 5: were oh by the way we were doing that to
- 1:55:25Speaker 5: japanese people who were born in this country lived in
- 1:55:30Speaker 5: this country were u.s citizens and like we took them
- 1:55:36Speaker 5: away from their homes took all of their money took
- 1:55:39Speaker 5: their property and And put them into camps. And like,
- 1:55:44Speaker 5: this was done to Tora as a child. So her
- 1:55:47Speaker 5: dad was like a successful businessman. They took all of that.
- 1:55:51Speaker 5: He never got it back when the war was over.
- 1:55:53Speaker 5: Our government just took that away from them. And we're like, well,
- 1:55:55Speaker 5: tough luck. you're Japanese, in quotes, because she wasn't.
- 1:56:00Speaker 3: She was.
- 1:56:02Speaker 5: And as you find out, that's kind of not even
- 1:56:05Speaker 5: true as you go into their ethnicity. So it's weird
- 1:56:09Speaker 5: that just anybody that they deemed to be a threat
- 1:56:13Speaker 5: was taken away. So there was already that, where they
- 1:56:17Speaker 5: lost everything their family had built for this whole generation
- 1:56:21Speaker 5: of him coming here. Then on top of that, they're
- 1:56:24Speaker 5: thrown into this once they resurface, it's in like this,
- 1:56:29Speaker 5: like essential ghetto of Chicago is where they relocate them.
- 1:56:34Speaker 5: And they're the only Asian family there. And they are
- 1:56:39Speaker 5: already like, you know, she's put upon for that reason
- 1:56:42Speaker 5: because everybody else it's also coming out of or towards
- 1:56:46Speaker 5: the end of world war two. So everyone around is
- 1:56:49Speaker 5: blaming her, you know, like, Oh, you're the enemy because
- 1:56:53Speaker 5: you look like the enemy. Everyone is blaming her for,
- 1:56:57Speaker 5: you know, World War II, which seems a little much.
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:57:00Speaker 5: So her and her family are the problem. Just being
- 1:57:04Speaker 5: in the neighborhood. There's that. So she's also she's also
- 1:57:08Speaker 5: like being treated like that as a child. Again, she's
- 1:57:11Speaker 5: like nine at this point.
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:57:13Speaker 5: So that's also at the point in her life when
- 1:57:16Speaker 5: five guys show up in a car and say, hey,
- 1:57:20Speaker 5: come over here and throw her.
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: In the car.
- 1:57:23Speaker 5: And hold her down and do things to her that
- 1:57:27Speaker 5: were not. Yeah. She like, yeah, all of the guys,
- 1:57:32Speaker 5: all of the guys. And, and just beat her and
- 1:57:36Speaker 5: called her names in the process. And like, all of
- 1:57:39Speaker 5: this is going on. She's not even 10. She's a
- 1:57:42Speaker 5: few way days away from her 10th birthday at this point.
- 1:57:46Speaker 5: So all of that before she's 10 years old, like,
- 1:57:52Speaker 5: And she, as you then, like it goes on. So again,
- 1:57:56Speaker 5: you got to deal with all of that. It's pretty heavy.
- 1:57:59Speaker 5: And it all kind of plays in as the story unfolds.
- 1:58:02Speaker 5: So if you want to unfold a story, this one
- 1:58:04Speaker 5: definitely does that. Because then we get to the point
- 1:58:07Speaker 5: that like she, like her mom comes. of blames her
- 1:58:11Speaker 5: like her mom's piece of work so like she's sort
- 1:58:15Speaker 5: of you know you're the problem with this family and
- 1:58:18Speaker 5: we don't want the you know people to find out
- 1:58:20Speaker 5: what's happened and you to bring shame upon the family
- 1:58:23Speaker 5: even more than we already have and like that's yeah
- 1:58:26Speaker 5: I'm like this is some people don't need to be
- 1:58:28Speaker 5: having children I think Whatever. So then she takes it
- 1:58:34Speaker 5: upon herself. You see these steps, some of which they
- 1:58:37Speaker 5: just sort of touch on, some of them they dig into.
- 1:58:39Speaker 5: But she not only survives that, but she decides, okay,
- 1:58:44Speaker 5: I'm going to become a stronger person. So she literally,
- 1:58:48Speaker 5: physically starts to take... martial arts classes so she like
- 1:58:53Speaker 5: physically takes on that that responsibility but then also she
- 1:58:58Speaker 5: like i'm going to find a way to support myself
- 1:59:01Speaker 5: so like she starts someone real again she developed very
- 1:59:05Speaker 5: early so she's 15 and gets a gets a fake
- 1:59:09Speaker 5: id gets a job like just sort of working in
- 1:59:12Speaker 5: the burlesque club and then somebody doesn't show up for
- 1:59:14Speaker 5: work and her boss is like hey you should get
- 1:59:16Speaker 5: up there and then she found out how much money
- 1:59:18Speaker 5: and she's like oh okay And does it. And then
- 1:59:22Speaker 5: spends decades after that of just like building a career
- 1:59:26Speaker 5: as like a successful burlesque dancer. And then a few
- 1:59:30Speaker 5: years later, like the, she's not as, as scorned for
- 1:59:34Speaker 5: being Japanese, but at that point we're into the fifties
- 1:59:36Speaker 5: and then it's more of a novelty. So then she
- 1:59:39Speaker 5: starts again being super smart. She starts playing on now
- 1:59:43Speaker 5: it's exotic in quotes. And so she starts playing it
- 1:59:47Speaker 5: up and like, she's, some visiting dignitaries call her like
- 1:59:51Speaker 5: miss beautiful Japan or some weird title. And like, so
- 1:59:54Speaker 5: then she starts billing that and she starts dressing in
- 1:59:56Speaker 5: the attire, even though like she didn't grow up that way,
- 1:59:59Speaker 5: but she's just like, screw it. I can use this.
- 2:00:02Speaker 5: So she builds this persona and like plays into the
- 2:00:05Speaker 5: Japanese stereotype. And then you get to the point where
- 2:00:09Speaker 5: she's like starting to get him, you know, make connections
- 2:00:13Speaker 5: with people in town when she moves to LA and,
- 2:00:17Speaker 5: I'll pause for a second here because also, and maybe
- 2:00:20Speaker 5: the most impressive part, the most impressive, and if you
- 2:00:24Speaker 5: don't think she's a freaking hero, like she also, by
- 2:00:28Speaker 5: the time, this didn't happen right away. In like a
- 2:00:31Speaker 5: 20-year period, after she's already somewhat successful as a burlesque dancer,
- 2:00:35Speaker 5: goes back to Chicago, runs into one of the guys
- 2:00:39Speaker 5: in the diner.
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:00:41Speaker 5: And lets him take her back to a motel as
- 2:00:44Speaker 5: he's going to do, you know, what he thinks he
- 2:00:47Speaker 5: needs to do. And she calls him out for being
- 2:00:50Speaker 5: who he is because he doesn't recognize her. And then
- 2:00:53Speaker 5: ties him to the bed and tortures him.
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: Wow!
- 2:00:56Speaker 5: And leaves him there with child rapists scrawled upon his chest.
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: Holy shit!
- 2:01:01Speaker 5: And then manages to track down the other four guys
- 2:01:05Speaker 5: over the next several years. And physically takes out her
- 2:01:09Speaker 5: revenge on them.
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: I'm like, wow.
- 2:01:13Speaker 5: Like if you didn't already, yeah, this all, like I
- 2:01:16Speaker 5: heard this at the time. I didn't know some of
- 2:01:18Speaker 5: the details that they go into, but like I, she,
- 2:01:22Speaker 5: when I talked to her, she's like, and I tracked
- 2:01:23Speaker 5: them down and, and you know, I got even. And
- 2:01:26Speaker 5: I was like, whoa, like even then, but now knowing
- 2:01:29Speaker 5: some of the, like the, the, dedication and the years
- 2:01:33Speaker 5: of like she knew like they all went to trial
- 2:01:36Speaker 5: she knew their names and one of the guys had
- 2:01:38Speaker 5: money and paid off the judge to like dismiss it
- 2:01:41Speaker 5: and of course she's a kid she's japanese like she's
- 2:01:45Speaker 5: like there's she's a woman nobody believes anything she says
- 2:01:48Speaker 5: so they all just like meh and shrug it off
- 2:01:51Speaker 5: and like they got away with it well they didn't
- 2:01:54Speaker 5: get away with it.
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: So Holy cow.
- 2:01:57Speaker 5: There's a nice little in-between thing that comes along. And that's, again,
- 2:02:01Speaker 5: before you even get to her moving into film.
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:02:03Speaker 5: Because then there's, like, the other one that she talked
- 2:02:06Speaker 5: about at the time. Like, she also, early on, before
- 2:02:09Speaker 5: he's the biggest star in the world, meets Elvis.
- 2:02:12Speaker 1: Wow.
- 2:02:14Speaker 5: Elvis proposed to her at that point.
- 2:02:16Speaker 2: Wow.
- 2:02:16Speaker 5: She told him no. And she also, speaking of the
- 2:02:21Speaker 5: lesson that you learned in Sinners, she taught him how
- 2:02:24Speaker 5: to kiss.
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:02:25Speaker 5: She taught him how to please her. And she said,
- 2:02:31Speaker 5: after I was done, he did pretty good. I had
- 2:02:33Speaker 5: no complaints after that. So she, in Sinner's style, taught
- 2:02:38Speaker 5: him how to take care of her.
- 2:02:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:02:40Speaker 5: And yeah, so he went on, like they said, like
- 2:02:44Speaker 5: the whole rest of his life, he's still like, he
- 2:02:46Speaker 5: talked about, like he supposedly came to visit them and
- 2:02:51Speaker 5: was like, you were you were supposed to be my
- 2:02:53Speaker 5: kid to her children.
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: Wow.
- 2:02:56Speaker 5: And years towards the end, she was like, she didn't
- 2:02:58Speaker 5: like his drug use. And he would still call her
- 2:03:01Speaker 5: up and he could talk to her because she wasn't starstruck.
- 2:03:04Speaker 5: She just knew him as that weird kid that, you know,
- 2:03:08Speaker 5: was obsessed with her back in the day. And like,
- 2:03:10Speaker 5: so there's that kind of stuff. Like she, again, there's
- 2:03:13Speaker 5: so many people, they kind of hint that Sinatra over
- 2:03:16Speaker 5: the years, she definitely, um, so many like people in
- 2:03:21Speaker 5: the films that like, because again, she's like so ahead
- 2:03:24Speaker 5: of her times. She's just like, you know, I don't,
- 2:03:28Speaker 5: I don't care what people think. I, you know, enjoy
- 2:03:31Speaker 5: having sex with people and I'm going to do it. Like,
- 2:03:35Speaker 5: so I'm going to take care of my needs and like,
- 2:03:39Speaker 5: I don't care.
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: So even as she got into, I'm not going to
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: get married to one guy.
- 2:03:42Speaker 5: And there's several people that were like, yeah, I, I,
- 2:03:45Speaker 5: you know, I want to, I want to be. And
- 2:03:47Speaker 5: she did get married a few times over the years.
- 2:03:49Speaker 5: And actually that was like her downfall as you get
- 2:03:51Speaker 5: into it. It's like the guys that she picked weren't
- 2:03:54Speaker 5: always the best for her. She loved them, but like
- 2:03:58Speaker 5: they definitely, one of them was not good. And the
- 2:04:00Speaker 5: other one still kind of stifled her as you know,
- 2:04:02Speaker 5: her separate career and like who she was. He was
- 2:04:06Speaker 5: just like, Oh no, you need to put that behind
- 2:04:08Speaker 5: you kind of thing.
- 2:04:09Speaker 9: But like, yeah, I mean it is, it is a
- 2:04:12Speaker 9: fascinating story that like, All of that just sort of, yeah,
- 2:04:17Speaker 9: covers the overall, but there's so many details.
- 2:04:21Speaker 5: Along the way that, yeah, I mean, Billy Wilder's another one.
- 2:04:27Speaker 5: She's making Irma LaDeuce, and, like, he's totally into her,
- 2:04:30Speaker 5: and she's like, he was married, and he was going
- 2:04:33Speaker 5: out with a couple other girls on the side, but
- 2:04:35Speaker 5: I didn't care. I didn't want to marry him. I
- 2:04:37Speaker 5: just wanted to have sex with him. Like, there's so
- 2:04:39Speaker 5: many times that she's just like, I don't care. I
- 2:04:42Speaker 5: just did what I wanted to do, and, like... It's
- 2:04:45Speaker 5: just amazing. And same thing with Russ Meyer. He like,
- 2:04:48Speaker 5: she told him up front, she's like, I don't want
- 2:04:50Speaker 5: to have anything to do with you. And he, and he,
- 2:04:53Speaker 5: but he had like a thing on his sets where
- 2:04:54Speaker 5: he's like, I don't want people hooking up on the set.
- 2:04:57Speaker 5: I don't want you out having sex. Cause it takes
- 2:04:59Speaker 5: away from the, you know, he's a very professional guy.
- 2:05:01Speaker 5: So like, but again, I think he just more wanted
- 2:05:06Speaker 5: to control people. Cause that seems more like what he
- 2:05:08Speaker 5: was into. But she was like, well, too bad. Cause
- 2:05:11Speaker 5: I'm going to do what I want to do. So
- 2:05:13Speaker 5: she picked like a production assistant or an assistant AD
- 2:05:18Speaker 5: kind of guy and was just like, you, you're going
- 2:05:21Speaker 5: to be my guy. And like, so they'd be done
- 2:05:24Speaker 5: shooting for the day and he'd come over and take
- 2:05:26Speaker 5: care of her. And she'd have to chase off Russ
- 2:05:29Speaker 5: as he was trying to peek in the window watching.
- 2:05:33Speaker 3: There's so many stories along the way.
- 2:05:35Speaker 5: That I'm just like, this woman was amazing. Like, Uh,
- 2:05:40Speaker 5: so I'm, I'm glad that like the story lived up
- 2:05:43Speaker 5: to the hype and like, as much as I thought
- 2:05:46Speaker 5: she was super cool, I was like, maybe I just,
- 2:05:48Speaker 5: you know, cause I met her when she was much older.
- 2:05:50Speaker 5: I'm like, so it seems like she was like so
- 2:05:53Speaker 5: calm and fun when I met her, but you hear
- 2:05:55Speaker 5: these stories about her back in the day of just
- 2:05:57Speaker 5: like laying down on the law and like beating people's ass.
- 2:06:00Speaker 5: And I'm just like, man, she is just so cool.
- 2:06:04Speaker 1: Yeah. Like basically she's the character from the movie.
- 2:06:07Speaker 5: I mean, she, well, that's, yeah. that's even how they,
- 2:06:10Speaker 5: that's the other thing. It's really well made because it
- 2:06:13Speaker 5: even says like, it starts off with this horrible thing
- 2:06:15Speaker 5: that happens to her. And like, they didn't know it,
- 2:06:18Speaker 5: but like Varla was born like in this, this, this,
- 2:06:23Speaker 5: thing that lived in her and this this anger that
- 2:06:26Speaker 5: lived in her like comes out in this character that
- 2:06:28Speaker 5: then goes on to become an icon like she's yeah
- 2:06:32Speaker 5: she's known for this visual of her like whether people
- 2:06:35Speaker 5: have seen the movie if you show them a shot
- 2:06:37Speaker 5: of her they're like oh that yeah i know that
- 2:06:39Speaker 5: like yeah yeah she's just power like she's just known
- 2:06:43Speaker 5: for being this strong powerful woman and like that came
- 2:06:47Speaker 5: from that moment and she like created that character before
- 2:06:51Speaker 5: it was a character And the movie came along and
- 2:06:54Speaker 5: she's like, no, I've got this. yeah. So like, it's,
- 2:06:58Speaker 5: it's weird as that movie is like it, it sort
- 2:07:01Speaker 5: of fulfilled this thing of like her becoming this icon of,
- 2:07:07Speaker 5: of powerful women. And like, and she, she just, she
- 2:07:10Speaker 5: is that. And she became that. And yeah, it's, so yeah,
- 2:07:14Speaker 5: the movie is also, I was, I was also really
- 2:07:17Speaker 5: glad that like, I guess the donations worked because it
- 2:07:20Speaker 5: also was well made. Like, Usually you can see if,
- 2:07:24Speaker 5: if it's a specifically a documentary and if it's a
- 2:07:26Speaker 5: low budget documentary, sometimes they don't even have enough, like,
- 2:07:30Speaker 5: cause you're kind of filling in the story. So sometimes
- 2:07:33Speaker 5: there's like, you just got to throw something on the
- 2:07:35Speaker 5: screen as background while somebody's talking and telling you something.
- 2:07:38Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 2:07:38Speaker 5: And sometimes they don't even have the money to cover
- 2:07:41Speaker 5: what you have to pay to go get real footage.
- 2:07:43Speaker 5: And like, They have all, in addition to, like, they
- 2:07:46Speaker 5: talk to her daughters now, so, like, they have all this, like,
- 2:07:49Speaker 5: home video stuff and photos from her back in the
- 2:07:51Speaker 5: day and all this old school imagery of her, but
- 2:07:55Speaker 5: they also, like, run clips of things that happened around
- 2:07:58Speaker 5: the same time and it's like actual good footage and
- 2:08:01Speaker 5: stuff that like they had to pay licensing for and
- 2:08:03Speaker 5: like so they did it the right way and they
- 2:08:05Speaker 5: bring in like good visuals and there's stuff that they
- 2:08:08Speaker 5: didn't have actual moments of so they have like drawings
- 2:08:11Speaker 5: of it that are like this amazing artwork that they've
- 2:08:14Speaker 5: done of things that happen so it's like every step
- 2:08:16Speaker 5: of the way they work in these like really well
- 2:08:20Speaker 5: financed pieces of this this puzzle coming together and even
- 2:08:23Speaker 5: like they work in some music along the way that
- 2:08:26Speaker 5: like that costs money and you can tell sometimes when
- 2:08:29Speaker 5: you know documentaries can't afford to work in music or
- 2:08:31Speaker 5: they work in weird generic stuff that's not very good
- 2:08:34Speaker 5: and like they work in really solid music along the way.
- 2:08:37Speaker 5: So it's like everything along the way is just like
- 2:08:41Speaker 5: really well put together. So I was, I was very
- 2:08:44Speaker 5: happy to see it. It turned out. Cause I, I
- 2:08:46Speaker 5: knew they were making it and I was so afraid
- 2:08:48Speaker 5: it wasn't going to be any good. And like, for
- 2:08:51Speaker 5: as much as I thought she was amazing, I was
- 2:08:53Speaker 5: afraid then they're going to put out this mediocre documentary
- 2:08:56Speaker 5: that wasn't going to, you know, live up to her
- 2:08:58Speaker 5: legend and like, no, no, this delivers. She is a legend,
- 2:09:03Speaker 5: but there's also like humanity to her. Like you see,
- 2:09:05Speaker 5: and like their stories or daughters are telling that like,
- 2:09:08Speaker 5: there's times when she's not a great mom and you're like, you,
- 2:09:11Speaker 5: you get a real sense of who she was, you know,
- 2:09:14Speaker 5: dealing with all of this stuff. And like, she probably
- 2:09:18Speaker 5: had some medical mental issues going on that like probably
- 2:09:22Speaker 5: needed to be dealt with and weren't because that's not
- 2:09:25Speaker 5: the world she grew up in. So like it's, yeah,
- 2:09:28Speaker 5: it's a really well put together, you know, portrait of
- 2:09:32Speaker 5: this woman that, that was so many things and kind of,
- 2:09:36Speaker 5: is above and beyond everything you'd heard. So yeah, I
- 2:09:40Speaker 5: was really pleased with how well it was, it was
- 2:09:42Speaker 5: put together.
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: Yeah, no, that's awesome, dude. Well, I'm, I'm totally hyped
- 2:09:46Speaker 1: to see it. Uh, uh, whatchamacallit.
- 2:09:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: It's like there were, there was no, like, uh people
- 2:09:52Speaker 1: dealing with their trauma back then you know like now everybody's.
- 2:09:55Speaker 5: Barely believed you when you're like right a little girl
- 2:09:58Speaker 5: you're poor you're yeah you're not white like you know.
- 2:10:02Speaker 1: Right right the marginalized people they just have to take
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: care of themselves you know and some people you know
- 2:10:08Speaker 1: under that kind of you know abuse they crumble you
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: know And some people become giants. Yeah.
- 2:10:17Speaker 5: I mean, like so many people would have not even
- 2:10:20Speaker 5: made it out of that. Like, you know, let alone
- 2:10:23Speaker 5: the other thing. Like, even if you didn't have those
- 2:10:26Speaker 5: horrible two things at the beginning of your life. any
- 2:10:28Speaker 5: other girl that's 15 working the burlesque clubs that have
- 2:10:31Speaker 5: got like guys thinking they can just buy her. And
- 2:10:34Speaker 5: you know, like the club owners telling her, yeah, I
- 2:10:37Speaker 5: want you to start having sex with these clients when
- 2:10:39Speaker 5: they come in. And she's like, hell no, I don't
- 2:10:41Speaker 5: do that unless I want to, like, I'm not doing
- 2:10:44Speaker 5: it for money. I'm doing it when I feel like it.
- 2:10:46Speaker 5: So like she was just so ahead of, you know,
- 2:10:50Speaker 5: what would become women, you know, hopefully now, like hopefully we, again,
- 2:10:56Speaker 5: still you don't get a lot of those choices when
- 2:10:58Speaker 5: you need them, but she's just so ahead of what
- 2:11:01Speaker 5: was going to come about and what, what would be what,
- 2:11:05Speaker 5: you know, women's liberation would become. But like she was
- 2:11:07Speaker 5: doing that, you know, 20, 30 years before that. So yeah,
- 2:11:11Speaker 5: she was, she was an amazing woman.
- 2:11:14Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's a, no, that's really cool. Uh, kind
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: of like the, the reaction, both, both of those reactions though, her,
- 2:11:22Speaker 1: her becoming so strong, it is like, a mutation it's
- 2:11:26Speaker 1: something that wouldn't you know it it was forged in
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: you know a really bad situation yeah i mean if.
- 2:11:34Speaker 5: She just had a normal even just a poor child
- 2:11:37Speaker 5: kind of an upbringing like would she have become anything
- 2:11:41Speaker 5: different but maybe she would have just had a regular
- 2:11:43Speaker 5: old life but because so much was thrown at her
- 2:11:47Speaker 5: when she wasn't even a teenager yet that like she
- 2:11:51Speaker 5: just became this other thing that, yeah.
- 2:11:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:11:55Speaker 5: It created her, yeah.
- 2:11:57Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 2:11:57Speaker 1: It's just basically like, whatchamacallit, like being shot by gamma rays,
- 2:12:02Speaker 1: you know? I mean, it's just like, it is a true,
- 2:12:06Speaker 1: it's the true thing about.
- 2:12:09Speaker 5: It's forged in fire, man.
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Mutations and heroes, you know? People go through something.
- 2:12:17Speaker 4: And it, changes you know stronger person than she could
- 2:12:22Speaker 4: have ever thought she would be and like yeah just
- 2:12:25Speaker 4: goes on to build this amazing life and and like
- 2:12:29Speaker 4: again it's it is a nice for as much heaviness
- 2:12:32Speaker 4: as there is it does end at the point where i.
- 2:12:35Speaker 5: Met her which again i thought she was just so
- 2:12:37Speaker 5: nice and and And she just was so friendly and
- 2:12:42Speaker 5: just laughing about stuff. And like, that's her telling us
- 2:12:45Speaker 5: stories as we're sitting there talking to her. And, and
- 2:12:48Speaker 5: this was you so many times you see somebody who's
- 2:12:52Speaker 5: like this, you know, great artist or whatever, and then
- 2:12:54Speaker 5: nobody appreciates them. we get to see like at the
- 2:12:57Speaker 5: tail end, there is the, when the convention world started
- 2:13:00Speaker 5: up and like she started hitting those and people just
- 2:13:03Speaker 5: lined up and people loved her because she's such a fun,
- 2:13:06Speaker 5: lovable person. So she got to, she got to see
- 2:13:09Speaker 5: that at the end of her life, that people appreciated
- 2:13:12Speaker 5: what she had done and what she had lived through
- 2:13:15Speaker 5: and like who she became. And they all kind of
- 2:13:17Speaker 5: like got it. And you're like, so the fact that
- 2:13:20Speaker 5: she got to experience that before she died was sort
- 2:13:23Speaker 5: of amazing. So I, I, I'm glad it ended with that.
- 2:13:26Speaker 5: It would really suck if we had all these horrible things.
- 2:13:29Speaker 5: And then later she got to be this legend, but
- 2:13:31Speaker 5: like she never knew. But it was just those last
- 2:13:34Speaker 5: like 10, 15 years maybe that people just started to
- 2:13:38Speaker 5: realize she was still out there and started bringing her
- 2:13:40Speaker 5: to these events and people would line up. So it's
- 2:13:43Speaker 5: like she at least got to realize that people appreciated
- 2:13:48Speaker 5: who she was and what she did.
- 2:13:50Speaker 1: Man, that rocks. Yeah. That rocks. Well, dude, I'm hyped.
- 2:13:53Speaker 1: And while you were telling, I was going like, I
- 2:13:55Speaker 1: have not seen faster pussycat since, uh, since college. And
- 2:13:59Speaker 1: it was like, and it was like, you know, so
- 2:14:02Speaker 1: it's been what, 30 years since I've seen it. And
- 2:14:05Speaker 1: I'm going like, that was, I've only seen it once
- 2:14:08Speaker 1: and it was, but it was a very, it left
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: a huge impression. I was just going like, it's such
- 2:14:12Speaker 1: a weird mixture.
- 2:14:13Speaker 5: Because it's like, to me, it's for somebody who was
- 2:14:16Speaker 5: such a schlocky filmmaker and I'll call him out. Like
- 2:14:20Speaker 5: all of his nudie films in the beginning are just,
- 2:14:23Speaker 5: They're barely watchable even if you're just there for nudity.
- 2:14:26Speaker 5: Like they're not great.
- 2:14:27Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 2:14:28Speaker 5: And he knocks out like one or two in the
- 2:14:30Speaker 5: middle because I also think Lorna is pretty cool. But
- 2:14:32Speaker 5: it's still way more of like a sort of sex-oriented movie.
- 2:14:36Speaker 5: This one is just action. Like you really don't get
- 2:14:39Speaker 5: nudity in this one. It's lots of boobs.
- 2:14:41Speaker 1: Don't worry.
- 2:14:42Speaker 5: There's lots of boobs. But like it's not a lot
- 2:14:45Speaker 5: of nudity and it's way more violence. And, like, it
- 2:14:49Speaker 5: works more as exploitation in sort of the violent end
- 2:14:52Speaker 5: of it and the just beating people's ass and racing cars. And, like,
- 2:14:56Speaker 5: it's a drive-in movie through and through. But, yeah, it's
- 2:15:00Speaker 5: funny that it, like, if you go back and watch it,
- 2:15:02Speaker 5: there's also, like, and this I blame Russ more than anybody.
- 2:15:06Speaker 5: She just yells the whole time. And they bring that
- 2:15:08Speaker 5: up in the documentary. They're like, why is she? And
- 2:15:11Speaker 5: they're like, that's part of this pent-up hostility her whole life.
- 2:15:14Speaker 5: Cause all of her lines, she just yells at everybody.
- 2:15:17Speaker 1: Like she's just angry.
- 2:15:19Speaker 5: Varla is just angry at all times. And like, so again,
- 2:15:24Speaker 5: a better director would be like, well, we don't need
- 2:15:27Speaker 5: this all the time. But like, so again, because you
- 2:15:29Speaker 5: watch her in other movies and she doesn't do that
- 2:15:31Speaker 5: all the time. She's, you watch her in Billy Wilder
- 2:15:34Speaker 5: movies and she delivers normal lines because a normal filmmaker
- 2:15:38Speaker 5: is filming it. But Russ just didn't care. And he
- 2:15:41Speaker 5: was like, yeah, get up there and do that. So
- 2:15:44Speaker 5: Russ just being sloppy, you know, it probably could have
- 2:15:47Speaker 5: been a little polished, but like in a way it's
- 2:15:50Speaker 5: so amazing the way it is because it's just, it
- 2:15:54Speaker 5: is raw. It is just, but that footage of like
- 2:15:58Speaker 5: your black and white footage is, racing cars the mojave
- 2:16:02Speaker 5: desert like.
- 2:16:03Speaker 6: Yeah just these statuesque women beating people's ass like she
- 2:16:08Speaker 6: just kicks people's ass in bad kung fu style and
- 2:16:12Speaker 6: like it's just it's so visually stunning to look at
- 2:16:17Speaker 6: that like you can put aside the insane dialogue and
- 2:16:20Speaker 6: like it's got these amazing visuals at the beginning of
- 2:16:24Speaker 6: the dance montage and like.
- 2:16:26Speaker 5: Yeah i don't know i just i was i saw
- 2:16:29Speaker 5: it The first time on the big screen. Talk about
- 2:16:31Speaker 5: being a weirdo.
- 2:16:32Speaker 1: Oh, nice.
- 2:16:33Speaker 5: The first time I saw it, it came to the
- 2:16:36Speaker 5: old school theater that I've told you about many times.
- 2:16:40Speaker 5: They were playing. I think it got reissued at some point,
- 2:16:43Speaker 5: or they'd done a cleanup job on the prints or something,
- 2:16:46Speaker 5: and they put it back out there. I only kind
- 2:16:49Speaker 5: of knew it by reputation. Had seen very little of
- 2:16:51Speaker 5: it then. That was so long ago. You didn't even
- 2:16:54Speaker 5: have clips or anything. It was pre-internet, so I just...
- 2:16:57Speaker 5: had heard about it, went to the theater and was
- 2:16:59Speaker 5: just blown away. Just mesmerized by these visuals and like
- 2:17:04Speaker 5: what was going on. And the fact that it wasn't
- 2:17:07Speaker 5: like a smut movie, like it was, you know, it
- 2:17:09Speaker 5: was just action more than anything else. And like weird violence.
- 2:17:14Speaker 5: I was just like, Oh, this is totally not what
- 2:17:16Speaker 5: I expected from Russ Meyer. And like, it's, it's just,
- 2:17:21Speaker 5: I don't know. Again, it is its own thing. And like,
- 2:17:23Speaker 5: if you appreciate it, You appreciate it on its own terms,
- 2:17:27Speaker 5: because it is its own weird movie.
- 2:17:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I mean, it's a singular kind of thing.
- 2:17:33Speaker 1: I just looked up if it's available to own, and
- 2:17:39Speaker 1: it actually has a Blu-ray. It's all out of print,
- 2:17:44Speaker 1: so it's like you know probably made them specifically.
- 2:17:47Speaker 5: For the the kickstarter people or something because right i
- 2:17:51Speaker 5: don't think i had a huge amount i kicked in
- 2:17:53Speaker 5: actually more than i thought i again that tells you
- 2:17:55Speaker 5: how much i cared about it because i was like
- 2:17:57Speaker 5: i put that much in like i had no money
- 2:17:59Speaker 5: back then and still don't now so like I'm glad
- 2:18:03Speaker 5: I contributed what I could because it was, yeah, it
- 2:18:06Speaker 5: shows on screen, man. It's a well-made documentary.
- 2:18:10Speaker 1: I'm talking about like the movie Faster, Pussycat. Oh, that, yeah.
- 2:18:14Speaker 5: Well, that was always weird because, again, for the longest time,
- 2:18:18Speaker 5: like when things came out on VHS and you could
- 2:18:21Speaker 5: start to have sell-through, like when they finally brought it
- 2:18:24Speaker 5: where it wasn't $ 79. 99, $ 99. 99, they started doing that $ 20
- 2:18:25Speaker 5: buy-through amount. Russ still had the rights to all his movies,
- 2:18:32Speaker 5: and he wouldn't do that. You had to buy them for,
- 2:18:36Speaker 5: I think it's still, like you had to go, they
- 2:18:37Speaker 5: were all through his website. The early days of websites,
- 2:18:41Speaker 5: he had one that was Russ Meyer's individually run website,
- 2:18:45Speaker 5: and you had to buy the VHS copies directly from him,
- 2:18:50Speaker 5: and they were like 80 bucks a pop or 100 bucks,
- 2:18:53Speaker 5: and they never marked them down. So the only place
- 2:18:56Speaker 5: that had them were video stores, essentially. Like, only super
- 2:18:59Speaker 5: hardcore geeks would spend that much money. Everybody else, you
- 2:19:02Speaker 5: just had to... Like, he banked on the fact that
- 2:19:04Speaker 5: everybody knew him by reputation. So all of this got
- 2:19:07Speaker 5: rented out by specialty video stores that had a fan
- 2:19:10Speaker 5: base that would come in and rent those. And, like, that's...
- 2:19:12Speaker 5: that's how he made his money. He's like, I think
- 2:19:14Speaker 5: I'll make more if I keep it at the higher,
- 2:19:17Speaker 5: because again, he knew it wasn't mainstream. So he's like,
- 2:19:19Speaker 5: if I can sell it to all the video stores
- 2:19:22Speaker 5: for a more expensive price, I'll make more money than
- 2:19:25Speaker 5: 20 bucks for the handful of geeks that'll like find
- 2:19:28Speaker 5: me on the internet and buy it for that. So
- 2:19:30Speaker 5: I think again, him being the marketing genius, whether or
- 2:19:35Speaker 5: not he was an artistic genius, he definitely knew how
- 2:19:37Speaker 5: to sell his product and Once again, that was him
- 2:19:41Speaker 5: doing his thing. So, yeah, that's probably why they're still
- 2:19:44Speaker 5: so expensive.
- 2:19:46Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. It looks like, though, next month a Blu-ray
- 2:19:51Speaker 1: is coming out from him, from his studio.
- 2:19:54Speaker 5: I was going to say, now he's gone, so probably
- 2:19:56Speaker 5: a level-headed person is taking over. Or we could just
- 2:19:59Speaker 5: make a real regular movie and not try to scam
- 2:20:03Speaker 5: people out of money.
- 2:20:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:20:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:20:05Speaker 1: But it looks like this is the first time in
- 2:20:07Speaker 1: a long time and everything else is like 200 bucks.
- 2:20:09Speaker 1: This is $ 30, but it's, it's bare bones. It's just
- 2:20:13Speaker 1: the movie on a Blu-ray and that's all you get.
- 2:20:16Speaker 1: So you got to get these supplemental, like this Tura documentary.
- 2:20:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:20:20Speaker 1: There's a lot.
- 2:20:21Speaker 5: Of cool stuff in there. They've got some behind the
- 2:20:23Speaker 5: scenes photos and like, there's not a ton of extra stuff,
- 2:20:26Speaker 5: but they do show some of the behind the scenes
- 2:20:28Speaker 5: stuff and definitely all the behind the scenes stories from
- 2:20:30Speaker 5: that era. So yeah, it's, It's fun for that, too,
- 2:20:33Speaker 5: because you get at least a little snippet in the
- 2:20:35Speaker 5: middle there about the Faster Pussycat. Nice.
- 2:20:38Speaker 2: Nice.
- 2:20:39Speaker 1: Good deal. Good deal.
- 2:20:40Speaker 5: Man, that's awesome.
- 2:20:43Speaker 1: Okay. Okay. So I've got... All right. I'm exhausted.
- 2:20:47Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what I figured. I wanted to get that
- 2:20:49Speaker 5: one in just to let people know it's out there
- 2:20:51Speaker 5: and let people know Tura's amazing.
- 2:20:54Speaker 1: Absolutely. Absolutely. I've lanced... The boil. Lovely. This is incredible. But,
- 2:21:03Speaker 1: I mean, there's one more to talk about, but I'm
- 2:21:08Speaker 1: going to have to give it the short shift. Because
- 2:21:11Speaker 1: I just don't have the stamina to go into it
- 2:21:17Speaker 1: as it needs to be gone into. Okay.
- 2:21:20Speaker 5: You can throw it out there for people, your general overview.
- 2:21:23Speaker 5: If we need to return to it, I'm sure it
- 2:21:26Speaker 5: won't be long until we're doing this again.
- 2:21:28Speaker 2: Sure.
- 2:21:29Speaker 1: Okay. All right. Just in case it gets its own
- 2:21:31Speaker 1: episode when you see it. All right. Or at least
- 2:21:36Speaker 1: we can go back to it when we've both seen it.
- 2:21:38Speaker 1: And so we can discuss it a little bit deeper.
- 2:21:40Speaker 1: but I'm going to give a very high recommendation to
- 2:21:44Speaker 1: another movie. Also with an exclamation point at the end
- 2:21:47Speaker 1: of it, uh, the bride, ah, the bride, uh, okay.
- 2:21:53Speaker 1: So not the Jennifer bills.
- 2:21:56Speaker 5: There's no sting in this thing.
- 2:21:58Speaker 1: Stings not in this man. This is, uh, the bride. Uh, I, I, it's, it, um,
- 2:22:08Speaker 1: I'm just going to say it doesn't stick every landing
- 2:22:12Speaker 1: it's trying to do. But like Sinners, which also did it,
- 2:22:18Speaker 1: but there is so much in this movie that is
- 2:22:25Speaker 1: really thought-provoking and resonated with me very much and that
- 2:22:35Speaker 1: I felt like it was a huge... beautiful why you
- 2:22:40Speaker 1: go to see a movie uh it was like it
- 2:22:43Speaker 1: was about movies uh it was a big pastiche of
- 2:22:48Speaker 1: pop culture stew and it had so much going on
- 2:22:53Speaker 1: in it and uh when i saw the trailer i
- 2:22:56Speaker 1: was going like what is this miscalculated bullshit i mean
- 2:23:01Speaker 1: oh my gosh they've They, somebody made a mistake and
- 2:23:05Speaker 1: I can't believe this is a movie coming out, you know? Uh, and,
- 2:23:09Speaker 1: but it was stuck with me, right?
- 2:23:12Speaker 5: I brought it up on the, on the recent horror
- 2:23:13Speaker 5: club episode that it was the trailer that played when
- 2:23:16Speaker 5: I saw scream.
- 2:23:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:23:19Speaker 5: And, um, yeah, I, I was like, that's the first
- 2:23:22Speaker 5: I'd seen the trailer and I knew it, I'd heard
- 2:23:24Speaker 5: about it. I knew it was coming out, but that's
- 2:23:26Speaker 5: the first time I'd seen anything that was like, yeah,
- 2:23:28Speaker 5: this is, this is a swing. So it's either going to,
- 2:23:32Speaker 5: Nail it, or it's going to be like, what was that?
- 2:23:35Speaker 5: So it at least seems like, you know, again, I
- 2:23:38Speaker 5: respect Maggie Gyllenhaal. I like what she comes up with.
- 2:23:42Speaker 5: She seems, even as an actress, just trying to do
- 2:23:44Speaker 5: things that are unconventional. So, like, this definitely feels like it's, like,
- 2:23:49Speaker 5: punk rock Bride of Frankenstein. Like, it's just, like, everything
- 2:23:53Speaker 5: that's not the norm, we're going to throw in here,
- 2:23:56Speaker 5: and this is my movie, and deal with it or don't,
- 2:23:58Speaker 5: I don't really care.
- 2:23:59Speaker 2: So.
- 2:24:00Speaker 5: I like that. I like that as a concept, whether
- 2:24:02Speaker 5: or not the movie comes together is I just like the,
- 2:24:05Speaker 5: that approach to filmmaking. I got to respect that.
- 2:24:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:24:09Speaker 1: I mean, it is, it is a spectacle and it
- 2:24:13Speaker 1: is attitude and it is very in your face and it,
- 2:24:17Speaker 1: but it's also just got like such a cool conceit
- 2:24:23Speaker 1: of doing like, uh, yeah. Like, bride of Frankenstein and
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: his bride as, uh, as like, you know, a Sid
- 2:24:32Speaker 1: and Nancy slash Bonnie and Clyde story. And also doing
- 2:24:37Speaker 1: it like, uh, in such lavish strokes, uh, and, uh,
- 2:24:45Speaker 1: such a fully realized period piece, just kind of like centers,
- 2:24:49Speaker 1: you know, just, uh, like it, Like you're going like,
- 2:24:52Speaker 1: how did they get so much money to make this movie?
- 2:24:55Speaker 5: That's the thing. It looks like a big budget movie
- 2:24:58Speaker 5: when you're watching that trailer. Like, yeah, this is not, again, this,
- 2:25:01Speaker 5: they didn't half-ass this. Like this looks like a well-financed movie.
- 2:25:05Speaker 1: No, it's almost like, well, you know, it's like those
- 2:25:07Speaker 1: asylum movies, like Theodore Roosevelt, Monster Killer or something like that. Transmorphers.
- 2:25:16Speaker 1: These movies where it's just like Red Riding Hood versus Godzilla.
- 2:25:23Speaker 1: Just these weird concepts that are usually given a $ 40
- 2:25:30Speaker 1: budget so it never fulfills the potential.
- 2:25:34Speaker 5: It can't deliver even if it wants to.
- 2:25:36Speaker 1: Right, right. Exactly. All they had was the core concept
- 2:25:40Speaker 1: that they just could barely afford enough uh you know
- 2:25:45Speaker 1: they could barely rent the camera you know and um
- 2:25:49Speaker 1: uh the entire budget went to the video box and
- 2:25:52Speaker 1: uh and and so this is like like that kind
- 2:25:56Speaker 1: of idea of like you know uh bride and frank
- 2:26:01Speaker 1: you know as like 1930s on the road bonnie and
- 2:26:06Speaker 1: clyde kind of thing but done with like like all
- 2:26:10Speaker 1: the money at Warner brothers. And, um, and it was
- 2:26:15Speaker 1: very interesting and it was very much, uh, about monsters.
- 2:26:22Speaker 1: And it was very much about, uh, uh, uh, Frankenstein movies.
- 2:26:29Speaker 1: And it was very much about bride and about, you know,
- 2:26:32Speaker 1: filtering it through a modern feminist lens, you know, and, uh,
- 2:26:36Speaker 1: very much like Tura who, uh, Just like, I just
- 2:26:39Speaker 1: want to have my, I just want agency over my
- 2:26:43Speaker 1: own life. I don't want to be owned by anybody.
- 2:26:46Speaker 1: I don't want to be pushed around. I just want
- 2:26:49Speaker 1: to have, I want to say what I've got to say.
- 2:26:53Speaker 1: That's very much like the bride is just like saying
- 2:26:56Speaker 1: like basic human rights of not being told what I am.
- 2:27:03Speaker 1: and being able to express my soul, uh, and, and
- 2:27:09Speaker 1: not repress that just because I'm a woman, you know? Um,
- 2:27:13Speaker 1: so it's, it's real, that is really good, dude. It's
- 2:27:17Speaker 1: really good. I mean, I would say it's, and it's
- 2:27:20Speaker 1: really interesting how they're marketing it. Cause it's, it's, uh,
- 2:27:25Speaker 1: Or what it's trying to be, and I don't think
- 2:27:28Speaker 1: it is going to make it. I don't know if
- 2:27:30Speaker 1: anybody's seen it. I saw it with, like, there was
- 2:27:32Speaker 1: other two other people in the theater, you know, but
- 2:27:36Speaker 1: I mean, I went, yeah, yeah. Uh, but they shot
- 2:27:39Speaker 1: it for IMAX and they're playing at IMAX, but only
- 2:27:42Speaker 1: at like a 10 30 show. So, uh, like, so
- 2:27:45Speaker 1: it's like kind of, I can see them trying to
- 2:27:48Speaker 1: maybe do it as a Rocky kind of thing, you know,
- 2:27:51Speaker 1: you know, but it's, uh, but you know, but I,
- 2:27:55Speaker 1: and it is kind of got that attitude of a,
- 2:27:57Speaker 1: of a midnight movie, uh, done with a list level
- 2:28:02Speaker 1: production values. And the, the gal playing the bride is great,
- 2:28:07Speaker 1: but really, but you know, she's very, she's very, she's
- 2:28:14Speaker 1: very in your face, you know? And, and so, and
- 2:28:17Speaker 1: the movie is very in your face. So Christian Bale
- 2:28:22Speaker 1: gives a very subdued, you know, grounded Frankenstein portrayal. And
- 2:28:29Speaker 1: I'm going like, I'm going like, I'm going like, man,
- 2:28:32Speaker 1: if you get good actors in your movie, I mean,
- 2:28:35Speaker 1: because this movie would have been terrible had the acting
- 2:28:37Speaker 1: not been so good.
- 2:28:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:28:38Speaker 1: You know?
- 2:28:40Speaker 5: And it's weird to do this type of story in
- 2:28:43Speaker 5: the wake of Poor Things. Because I mean, like, in
- 2:28:46Speaker 5: listening to you describe it, I was like, that's like
- 2:28:49Speaker 5: almost exactly, like, that's what I took from Poor Things
- 2:28:52Speaker 5: was like, it's so... It's so Frankenstein story, but done
- 2:28:57Speaker 5: with sort of a feminist slant of like, yeah, but
- 2:29:00Speaker 5: I'm my own person and I want to find my
- 2:29:02Speaker 5: own way and do what I want to do. And
- 2:29:05Speaker 5: if that's, you know, as she finds out, hey, you know,
- 2:29:08Speaker 5: sex feels good.
- 2:29:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:29:10Speaker 5: Why would I not do this? So like she gets
- 2:29:13Speaker 5: and you've got all these guys that come along that
- 2:29:16Speaker 5: tell her she can't do that or. I want to
- 2:29:18Speaker 5: be the only one you have sex with. And like, it's,
- 2:29:21Speaker 5: she's just like, but why? And like, nobody has the
- 2:29:24Speaker 5: answer really. It's just like, well, but that's the way
- 2:29:26Speaker 5: it's supposed to be. And she's like, but I don't
- 2:29:29Speaker 5: want it that way. So like, so again, like the
- 2:29:32Speaker 5: fact that just a couple of years ago, we had
- 2:29:34Speaker 5: a story that kind of explored that. So it's interesting
- 2:29:37Speaker 5: now with this taking a very different take on it,
- 2:29:41Speaker 5: but yeah, I think that's interesting that we've had like,
- 2:29:44Speaker 5: a one-two punch of both of these sort of examining
- 2:29:47Speaker 5: that basic idea.
- 2:29:49Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, yeah, I did. I have not
- 2:29:51Speaker 1: seen poor things, so I didn't.
- 2:29:53Speaker 5: I mean, it's amazing. So yeah, it's, it's definitely, I
- 2:29:56Speaker 5: got to check it out. Also put on the list. Yeah.
- 2:29:59Speaker 1: So yeah. So this one is like very, uh, this
- 2:30:02Speaker 1: one here is very much like the bride waking up
- 2:30:05Speaker 1: and not having any memory of her former life. She's
- 2:30:08Speaker 1: only known, uh, She's just existing just to be the
- 2:30:13Speaker 1: bride of Frankenstein. So that's very much, you know, the
- 2:30:20Speaker 1: thing of like, we are more than just your bride,
- 2:30:22Speaker 1: you know? So that's interesting. Yeah, you know, it's kind
- 2:30:27Speaker 1: of like a thing of like you're born to get married,
- 2:30:30Speaker 1: you know.
- 2:30:31Speaker 5: You're put on this earth just for me.
- 2:30:34Speaker 1: Right, right, right. Yeah, yeah. And so it's loaded. It's
- 2:30:39Speaker 1: loaded with that kind of, you know, there is no
- 2:30:42Speaker 1: subtext in the movie, but it's very out there. but it's,
- 2:30:47Speaker 1: it's very well made and very well directed and very
- 2:30:50Speaker 1: well put together. And, uh, I really enjoyed it. And
- 2:30:53Speaker 1: it was very, uh, uh, it, it got to me
- 2:30:58Speaker 1: in points. And, uh, I mean, I'm just going like,
- 2:31:01Speaker 1: I don't know what the reaction's been to it, but I've,
- 2:31:05Speaker 1: I would say this is– I can feel that this
- 2:31:07Speaker 1: is going to be one of the movies that I
- 2:31:09Speaker 1: would walk into a room of people talking. I go like, man,
- 2:31:11Speaker 1: I love The Bride. Everybody going like, oh, that was
- 2:31:13Speaker 1: the worst movie.
- 2:31:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:31:15Speaker 5: That's the thing. I can think of people I know
- 2:31:18Speaker 5: that would think that's the worst movie ever. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:31:22Speaker 1: Absolutely. I can definitely hear.
- 2:31:24Speaker 5: That coming from a very specific group of people.
- 2:31:28Speaker 1: Sure, sure, man.
- 2:31:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:31:30Speaker 1: So I, I get it. You know, I get it.
- 2:31:33Speaker 1: I mean, I, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm, I'm, I'm looking,
- 2:31:37Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to you seeing it so I can
- 2:31:39Speaker 1: hear your take on it. Cause I, I really, I
- 2:31:42Speaker 1: thought it was great. So thumbs up. So then you're
- 2:31:45Speaker 1: going like, they say there's no original movies, you know,
- 2:31:48Speaker 1: and everything, but this is very often left field, you know,
- 2:31:52Speaker 1: and it could have been terrible. When I saw the trailer,
- 2:31:54Speaker 1: I was going like, this is such a, major swing
- 2:31:58Speaker 1: for the fence. That's what I'm saying.
- 2:31:59Speaker 5: It's just a swing. That's all I said. I was like,
- 2:32:02Speaker 5: I don't know if it's going to work, but she's
- 2:32:04Speaker 5: going for it, man. She is definitely putting it all
- 2:32:08Speaker 5: out there.
- 2:32:09Speaker 1: That's it, man. Just ran out of the house naked
- 2:32:12Speaker 1: and just hoped everything was going to work out okay.
- 2:32:16Speaker 1: I think it was a.
- 2:32:18Speaker 1: It was a successful experiment.
- 2:32:22Speaker 5: We've seen Blue Velvet. We know that all works out
- 2:32:25Speaker 5: fine in the end.
- 2:32:27Speaker 1: That's right.
- 2:32:28Speaker 5: Fine in the end.
- 2:32:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. And it's got Annette Bening in it as
- 2:32:34Speaker 1: a mad scientist. I mean, you're going like, wow, that's crazy. Anyway,
- 2:32:38Speaker 1: so yeah, great movie. So check it out.
- 2:32:43Speaker 5: As i uh as i threw out there when we
- 2:32:46Speaker 5: pieced this together we were like do we even need
- 2:32:49Speaker 5: a specific thing and i'm like no i was like
- 2:32:51Speaker 5: if you put us in a place and let us
- 2:32:54Speaker 5: start talking we'll cover it don't you worry so we
- 2:32:58Speaker 5: get around there you go we have definitely covered a
- 2:33:02Speaker 5: lot of topics a lot of movies and life as
- 2:33:06Speaker 5: a whole i think we figured it.
- 2:33:07Speaker 1: All out yeah man i think so i think i
- 2:33:10Speaker 1: think uh Secrets of the universe were discovered here and everything.
- 2:33:15Speaker 1: That's what we do. Movies. Movies, man. Movies. It's just
- 2:33:19Speaker 1: bringing people together. Bringing awkward introverts together.
- 2:33:25Speaker 5: I was going to say, it brings you and I together.
- 2:33:27Speaker 5: And then if other people come along for the ride,
- 2:33:31Speaker 5: thank you. You are very patient.
- 2:33:35Speaker 1: Thank you for your patience.
- 2:33:36Speaker 5: We appreciate it.
- 2:33:37Speaker 1: And you are very patient. Oh, my God. Yeah, for real, dude. Oh, man,
- 2:33:42Speaker 1: that's good stuff.
- 2:33:43Speaker 5: All right.
- 2:33:44Speaker 1: Cool. Brian, man, we got to eat.
- 2:33:48Speaker 5: Eventually, yes. That's why geeks, you know, we get so
- 2:33:51Speaker 5: worked up. Eventually, we're like, oh, man, I got to, like,
- 2:33:54Speaker 5: make dinner. I've been at this for most of the
- 2:33:57Speaker 5: day now. I've been doing my geek things and forget
- 2:34:01Speaker 5: I got to make a sandwich or something eventually.
- 2:34:03Speaker 1: You got to make a sandwich, bro. Yeah. Right on.
- 2:34:08Speaker 5: Thank you for coming along on this cinematic journey.
- 2:34:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:34:12Speaker 5: Everybody else out there.
- 2:34:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:34:15Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 2:34:15Speaker 5: Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next time.
- 2:34:17Speaker 5: Same geek feed. Thanks for listening. I'm so sick of
- 2:34:25Speaker 5: all these pretty boys trying to act like the shit.
- 2:34:30Speaker 11: And I just wish.
- 2:34:37Speaker 1: I've been searching, don't think it's out there. Talks for hours, walks.
- 2:34:43Speaker 5: In with flowers. Dirty converse, six two and brown hair.
- 2:35:12Speaker 1: Kiss me till I'm numb and I'll treat me so bad.
- 2:35:16Speaker 5: He makes me laugh. He's never on my nerves.
- 2:35:22Speaker 8: It's along with my dad.
- 2:35:25Speaker 5: I've been searching. Don't think it's out there. Oh, so
- 2:35:29Speaker 5: loyal makes me.
- 2:36:17Speaker 1: Everything that I want to do Yeah, I wish they
- 2:37:23Speaker 1: would just be like, you just need to have an
- 2:37:25Speaker 1: Amazon video store where you go in and you rent
- 2:37:29Speaker 1: a little slip. of paper or like a cue and
- 2:37:31Speaker 1: then you bring it back home and then you just
- 2:37:33Speaker 1: show it to your... Just so you can feel like
- 2:37:35Speaker 1: you got out of the house.
- 2:37:36Speaker 5: Yeah, it's more convenient because you have to get up
- 2:37:38Speaker 5: and go drive there and then walk around the place
- 2:37:42Speaker 5: and look at the back of the box and then
- 2:37:43Speaker 5: when you're done, you just take the slip out and
- 2:37:45Speaker 5: you go home with the slip and you punch in
- 2:37:47Speaker 5: the code and you're like, ah, found a movie. The future!
