- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in First Timothy
- 0:19chapter 6 and verse #11 hopefully going through verse 16
- 0:26for today. And we are nearing the end of
- 0:30the book. Paul has been writing through
- 0:32for Timothy, who he had left at the church at Ephesus, so that
- 0:37Timothy could put back into order some of the things that
- 0:42were out of whack in the church. False teaching, bad teachers,
- 0:45those that were greedy, just a whole mess of problems.
- 0:50And Paul has been encouraging Timothy in his walk with the
- 0:54Lord and helping to like equip other believers who are faithful
- 1:00in their walks. And Paul here does not say like
- 1:03Timothy, everything rests and relies on you.
- 1:07But in one sense, he, he kind of says Timothy, so much of what
- 1:11will make the impact for this church is who you invest into.
- 1:19And so he's talked all the way through about teaching men and
- 1:24women, about prayer, about them learning and living out the word
- 1:29of God. He's talked to him about who he
- 1:31puts into church leadership as an overseer, as an elder or as a
- 1:36Deacon. He's talked about like church
- 1:38finances and those that would be, if you will, employed as
- 1:43widows for the service of like praying and being about the
- 1:47Lord's work. And so as he's been talking
- 1:50through all of this letter, there could almost be a
- 1:55heaviness at the end of it to go, man, this seems like so
- 1:59much. And though I'm called not to do
- 2:01it all myself, but to invest in these other people who will
- 2:05themselves do the work of the ministry.
- 2:10Timothy could feel very burdened down.
- 2:13And as we saw last episode in the preceding verses, there
- 2:18would be false teachers, ones that would reject Timothy's
- 2:22teaching, even though it was coming from the Holy Spirit and
- 2:26from Paul, the the first starter and planter of this church at
- 2:30Ephesus. And there would be these
- 2:33teachers that were greedy, that were simply trying to make a
- 2:37buck off of the Ephesian believers.
- 2:40And so Paul says, don't be like these guys.
- 2:43But now in verse #11 he says this.
- 2:45But you, O man of God, flee from these things and pursue
- 2:50righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness.
- 2:56Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of eternal life to
- 3:00which you were called, and about which you have made a good
- 3:03confession, in the presence of many witnesses, in the presence
- 3:07of God who gives life to all, and of Christ Jesus, who gave a
- 3:11good confession before Pontius Pilate.
- 3:13I charge you to keep this command without fault or failure
- 3:18until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 3:20God will bring this about in His own time.
- 3:23He is the blessed and only sovereign, the King of kings and
- 3:27the Lord of Lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in
- 3:31unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see.
- 3:36To him be honor and eternal power.
- 3:40Amen. So here Paul outlines for
- 3:44Timothy. I've given you these
- 3:46instructions and I'm giving you some of these final instructions
- 3:50in view of who Jesus is, like in view of your King, your
- 3:56sovereign, the one that is Abel and the one who has earned the
- 4:01right to call the shots in your life.
- 4:03This is who you need to be doing all of this for.
- 4:06And though none of you, and though I am not called to pastor
- 4:11the church at Ephesus, this same overarching life's goal and
- 4:16mission to accomplish the will of God in view of who our Savior
- 4:21is, that goes for us as well. So let's look first at verse #11
- 4:26He says, but you, man of God, flee from these things and
- 4:31pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and
- 4:36gentleness. So here he anchors Timothy's
- 4:42identity. Not in Hey, Timothy, you are the
- 4:46person from kind of a a mixed family of those that were, you
- 4:51know, had a Greek father, Hebrew mother, like Jewish mother and
- 4:56had multiple religious backgrounds even in his life.
- 5:02And on his mom's side, he had a legacy of faith in the God of
- 5:08the Old Testament and in the Old Testament scriptures.
- 5:11On his dad's side, he did not have that, but his identity was
- 5:15not here's what your background is or here's who your parents
- 5:19were. He says you are a man of God and
- 5:23what a joy that this is not just a title that is given here to a
- 5:28pastor, though hopefully I am a man of God.
- 5:32This is for every man, woman, boy and girl.
- 5:36We are children of God and I want to encourage you that that
- 5:42is your ultimate identity before the Lord.
- 5:46Though there will be people that do not agree with you though.
- 5:49Though there will be people that are against you as you try and
- 5:54live your life for King Jesus even as people were against
- 5:58Jesus as He lived his life on this earth.
- 6:01I want you to know that you have been named and claimed by God
- 6:06and you belong to Him. Your life has meaning and
- 6:09purpose because it is not reliant on the whims of others.
- 6:13Instead, you find your purpose in the Lord who bought you with
- 6:18his own death. So he says you are a man of God.
- 6:23And so he says, flee from these things, flee from greed, flee
- 6:26from being contentious and slanderous and full of envy and
- 6:32and fighting and being suspicious of other people
- 6:36constantly disagreeing. He says that is not who you are.
- 6:40That goes for you and me as well.
- 6:42Flee from these things. And then he gives a list.
- 6:45It's pretty similar to the list that he gives in Galatians 5 to
- 6:49the churches of Galatia about the fruit of the Spirit.
- 6:51He says here's what you need to pursue.
- 6:53You need to pursue righteousness.
- 6:56That is right living, like living in a way that is clearly
- 7:03good before God and before man. It's right living with God and
- 7:06man. Righteousness, pursue
- 7:08righteousness, godliness that you would have God's
- 7:11characteristics coming out of you.
- 7:13He says faith that Timothy would have belief, consistency and
- 7:19obedience in the way that he interacted with God and with
- 7:23others. He says righteousness,
- 7:25godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness.
- 7:30Endurance would be Timothy. When you encounter these people
- 7:35that don't want to listen to you, keep on going.
- 7:38When you have people that leave the church, keep on going.
- 7:42When you have elders that have walked away from the faith or
- 7:47that they have sinned and that you as a church body have had to
- 7:51excommunicate this person, he says whatever, as I've given you
- 7:56these instructions in this letter, as you go through the
- 8:00hard times, you're going to need to keep on going, keep on
- 8:03enduring. And for you and me today we are
- 8:05going to encounter hard times in our lives and God would tell us
- 8:08have endurance, keep on going. I think of what we read together
- 8:13many, many months ago now in James One, let endurance, let
- 8:18patients have it's perfect work so that as a result of being
- 8:24patient time and time again in during past hardships, we will
- 8:29find that God has made us mature and complete and in need of
- 8:33nothing. So he says that Timothy needs to
- 8:37have endurance and he needs to have gentleness.
- 8:41This is something we looked at in our study Tabernacle tidbits
- 8:47through Second Timothy and chapter 2.
- 8:50Paul fleshes out this idea a little bit more for Timothy, but
- 8:54in essence, it's people will be stupid, people will be
- 8:58argumentative, people will be slanderous, but the way that you
- 9:02need to treat these people is not OK.
- 9:05I'm going to bring the hammer down.
- 9:07He goes, Deal gently with them. Because it might be that as a
- 9:11result of the fruit of the Spirit, one of which is
- 9:15gentleness, as that flows out of you towards them, they might
- 9:19recognize their folly that they go, I'm angry all the time.
- 9:23I'm always using my words in the wrong way, but this pastor,
- 9:28this, you know, applying it to our situation, this godly
- 9:32person, they're not treating me like I'm treating them.
- 9:35They're not treating me like I'm treating others.
- 9:38They are kind towards me. They're not bringing the hammer
- 9:41down. They are dealing gently, kindly
- 9:45with me even in my brokenness and my fallenness.
- 9:48Maybe I'm in the wrong and they are in the right.
- 9:52And so here, that's the end of verse #11 that Paul gives
- 9:56Timothy. These are the things you need to
- 9:58pursue in your life. Are those the characteristics
- 10:01that you are pursuing in your life?
- 10:03Living right by God and man, having faith and, and
- 10:07consistency and obedience towards the Lord.
- 10:10Are you loving God and others? Are you having endurance
- 10:13throughout hardships in your life?
- 10:15And are you dealing gently with people that you would be tempted
- 10:19to bring the hammer down on? Instead of pursuing sin, pursue
- 10:24these things. Verse #12 he says, fight the
- 10:26good fight of the faith. Take hold of eternal life to
- 10:30which you were called, and about which you have made a good
- 10:33confession in the presence of many witnesses at the beginning
- 10:37of verse #12 he says fight the good fight of faith.
- 10:40There are people that will want to argue about stupid stuff.
- 10:43There will be people that want to fight and quarrel over 1000
- 10:47different things, he says. But what is most important is
- 10:51our faith, the gospel of Jesus Christ, our relationship with
- 10:55the Lord and our love for other people when it comes to that
- 10:59fight, that fight. I could waste my time fighting a
- 11:03lot of battles, but I want to spend my life fighting for the
- 11:07souls of mankind, fighting for people to experience a good
- 11:12relationship with God through listening to His voice and
- 11:16listening to His Word. That's what I want to give my
- 11:19life to. I want to encourage you.
- 11:21What are you fighting with others about?
- 11:23Are you fighting for their souls or are you just fighting them?
- 11:28There may be times when we need to be at odds with someone else
- 11:32because they refuse to listen to the Lord or they refuse to obey.
- 11:39As a pastor, there even been times that I've had to interact
- 11:43with that times when brothers or sisters in the Lord were at
- 11:48odds, times when people just were not following the Lord or
- 11:53being faithful in areas of service.
- 11:56That I am hoping that each time along the way I've had a
- 12:01gentleness and a care and an endurance to say, hey, this
- 12:05isn't right. You shouldn't be doing that.
- 12:07You shouldn't be fighting with this person.
- 12:10What does the Lord want you to do here?
- 12:13And and hopefully I've been fighting that good fight.
- 12:15I want to encourage you. You can fight worthy worthwhile
- 12:19fights. It's the fight of faith.
- 12:21It's not the the fight for your own like rights or yourself
- 12:26importance though there may be times that we need to pursue
- 12:32some of those things in a godly way.
- 12:34Most of the time our fights are just about us, our desires, what
- 12:37we want in life. Instead, let's fight the good
- 12:40fight of the faith. He says take hold of eternal
- 12:43life to which you were called. He says Timothy eternal life is
- 12:46awaiting you like grab it. Live that if you will live that
- 12:52Sermon on the Mount life. Live that fruit of the Spirit
- 12:55life now and claim, name it, live in it.
- 12:59Don't get bogged down by this temporary life that will fade
- 13:03away. Instead, recognize eternity is
- 13:05coming. And so I'm going to Live Today
- 13:08in light of eternity. He says you were called to
- 13:11eternal life by Jesus and he says in about which you have
- 13:14made a good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
- 13:17Timothy, you have told other people about eternal life, about
- 13:20the gospel. I want to encourage you to live
- 13:23in that reality that is coming and and we can even behave as
- 13:29though it is here even now. Verse #13 it says in the
- 13:33presence of God who gives life to all and of Christ Jesus who
- 13:37gave a good confession before Pontius Pilate.
- 13:41I charge you to keep this command without fault or failure
- 13:45until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 13:48He says, Timothy, keep on holding on.
- 13:51Don't give up. Don't give up your confession of
- 13:54faith in Jesus. Jesus stood before Pontius
- 13:56Pilate and gave the answer of who he was.
- 13:59I want you, Timothy, to stand before the people in Ephesus and
- 14:04boldly declare who Jesus is. I want to encourage you at the
- 14:09other end of this Tabernacle Talk episode.
- 14:12I want you to give a good confession of faith in who Jesus
- 14:18is and what he's accomplished there in your home, with your
- 14:22family, at your job, among your friends.
- 14:26Like Jesus stood before a ruler of the earthly world, one that
- 14:33had the authority either to forgive him or to deliver him to
- 14:39be killed. And Jesus, for the sake of your
- 14:42soul, and my soul for the sake of dying for our sins, He gave
- 14:47the honest answer of who he was. Will you, before other people
- 14:53who will not kill you, will you give the answer of who Jesus is?
- 14:59And Paul says, listen, God and Jesus are watching.
- 15:03And so follow these words well. Realize that when it feels like
- 15:10you're alone or when it feels like you are outnumbered or you
- 15:14are looked down on as a result of your faith.
- 15:16Realize you do have witnesses and it is your God that has
- 15:21called you for a mission and a purpose today, wherever he has
- 15:25you in your life and you can be faithful to him in his sight.
- 15:31Verse #15 the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 15:35He says God will bring this about in his own time.
- 15:39He so that if you remember back in Mark 13.
- 15:45Jesus says yes, he's on as he was on earth.
- 15:48He did not know the day or the hour when God the Father would
- 15:53send him to bring back his church.
- 15:58And so Paul here echoes this says God will bring this about
- 16:01the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ in his own time.
- 16:05I think it's also noteworthy as far as the eminence of Jesus
- 16:12return that in verse #14 Paul says, I charge you to keep this
- 16:17command without fault or failure until the appearing of our Lord
- 16:21Jesus Christ. That Paul did not say, okay,
- 16:25Jesus will come after this, that or the other.
- 16:30Paul was not waiting for any events in order for Jesus to
- 16:33come back. He thought Jesus can come back
- 16:36at any time. It will be when God the Father
- 16:39says it's going to happen. But he believed Timothy, you
- 16:43need to do this until Jesus shows up.
- 16:46He doesn't say keep it throughout your life.
- 16:49He says, I want you to obey this charge to proclaim the gospel
- 16:54and to live godly and to teach others in this way until Jesus
- 16:58returns. So I think that ought to
- 17:01influence the way that we think about Jesus's return, that we
- 17:04should never say, OK, well, Jesus will come back after we've
- 17:07put the world back in order. Or Jesus will come after 34 red
- 17:13cows get sacrificed at a third temple.
- 17:16Like that's not what the Bible says that we should be waiting
- 17:20for with Jesus's return. We should always be expecting
- 17:24that Jesus could return at any moment.
- 17:27Verse #15 As we end today says God is the blessed and only
- 17:33sovereign. He's the only one that is really
- 17:36in control. He calls him the King of kings
- 17:39and the Lord of Lords. This is these are titles that
- 17:43are often given to Jesus in the New Testament.
- 17:46The only time it's used in the Old Testament is when the King
- 17:50Nebuchadnezzar, when he recognizes that he has been like
- 17:54proud and sinful before the only real God, he calls him the God
- 17:59of gods, the King of kings, and the Lord of Lords.
- 18:03And so here Paul brings up this phrase that Nebuchadnezzar, the
- 18:07greatest earthly king of his generation.
- 18:09He brings that phrase to Timothy's mind as Timothy knew
- 18:13the Old Testament scriptures. And so he reminds him that the
- 18:17true King of kings and Lord of Lords, the only one that should
- 18:19be ultimately obeyed or feared, was not Ephesian rulers or even
- 18:27Caesar. Instead, God was the one to be
- 18:30followed. And he says, who alone, God
- 18:32alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light.
- 18:37God is amazing and incredible, he says, whom no one has seen or
- 18:42can see. To him be honor and eternal
- 18:45power. Amen.
- 18:47He says, Timothy, you don't need to fear the false teachers.
- 18:50You don't need to fear the Ephesian rulers.
- 18:53What you need, need to fear is God himself, and God is the one
- 18:58that lives within you in the person of the Holy Spirit and
- 19:01will bring about these godly characteristics.
- 19:04So keep on holding on, fight the good fight of faith.
- 19:08Hang on till Jesus comes because he is a worthy God.
- 19:13He is God to be honored. He is a God who is worthy of all
- 19:16eternal power. And because he is the one that
- 19:20loves us, that died for us, he, he is the one that we should
- 19:25live for. I got to tell you guys, I, I am
- 19:29encouraged through this portion of scripture.
- 19:32I'm looking forward to seeing Jesus return and I want to be
- 19:36faithful until he comes. I don't want to be ashamed of
- 19:39the one that stood on trial and was killed for me.
- 19:44So as I'm quote, UN quote on trial in my interactions with
- 19:49people that don't know Jesus, I want to be faithful to proclaim
- 19:54the gospel, to confess Jesus as my Lord and my Savior because he
- 19:59stood in front of others for me. I hope that would be an
- 20:02encouragement to you today. God bless.
