- 0:46Speaker 4: Cute. Aww.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Hello. Good morning, John Jay and Rich. Can I help you? Hello?
- 0:52Speaker 4: Hello.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Who's this? This is Shannon. What's up, Shannon?
- 0:59Speaker 4: I was trying to see, have I got the right number?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yes, you do. Oh, Shannon.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Shannon.
- 1:11Speaker 3: You know what's funny is that obviously you heard an
- 1:13Speaker 3: accent there. I'm so excited because I was hoping that
- 1:16Speaker 3: a foreigner would call us because I saw this article.
- 1:19Speaker 3: There's a list of habits that Americans have while dining
- 1:23Speaker 3: at restaurants that are mind-boggling to people from other countries.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Mind-boggling. Let's hear an example.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Ordering one entree to split.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, that's a big one. They don't do that overseas?
- 1:35Speaker 1: Oh, you want to know why?
- 1:36Speaker 3: Because portions here in Arizona, or I guess in America
- 1:40Speaker 3: in general.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Are huge.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Rich and his wife do that quite a bit.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I mean, that's all we do. We'll like one app
- 1:46Speaker 2: and one thing, and we split it.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I can't.
- 1:48Speaker 3: I'm from here, but I don't understand that because I
- 1:50Speaker 3: want my own meal, and I want half of yours.
- 1:52Speaker 3: So these are habits that are mind-boggling to other people.
- 1:56Speaker 3: When Americans say, I'll do the... When ordering from a menu,
- 2:00Speaker 3: it's such a strange choice of phrase. Or when people say, gimme,
- 2:03Speaker 3: when ordering.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I'll do the.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I'll do the. That's interesting.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Some people say it's bad manners.
- 2:09Speaker 3: We could say, may I please have, or can I
- 2:11Speaker 3: please have, and then thank them afterwards. But anyway, so
- 2:14Speaker 3: apparently these are things that are baffling. expecting service in
- 2:18Speaker 3: a restaurant to be immediate and having your server be
- 2:21Speaker 3: exactly on your schedule so you don't have to wait.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I'm guilty of that.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I definitely feel like in Europe you are kind
- 2:27Speaker 2: of sitting around and enjoying, you know, banter. Yeah, but
- 2:30Speaker 2: they also bring out things.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Because they dine. Hold on, maybe she's calling back. Hello,
- 2:36Speaker 1: John Jane Rich, can I help you?
- 2:37Speaker 2: Is this Kiss FM?
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yes, is this Shannon?
- 2:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:41Speaker 1: You have the right number. Yes, you have the right number.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I was going to ask you, so you're on the air. Well,
- 2:45Speaker 1: first of all, what can we do for you? I
- 2:47Speaker 1: have some questions for you. Okay.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Am I really on the air? Yeah.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Where are you from?
- 2:54Speaker 4: I'm from Australia, but I live in Los Angeles.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Oh, what are you calling us for?
- 2:58Speaker 4: I thought it was for the Jingle Ball ticket.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah. Well, hey, let me ask you this first.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Do you think it's weird that Americans will order food
- 3:12Speaker 3: and split one entree?
- 3:15Speaker 2: No. I don't either.
- 3:18Speaker 3: According they say. Well, that's just for Europeans. She's from Australia.
- 3:22Speaker 3: This is probably totally normal for people in Australia. What about,
- 3:25Speaker 3: there's an article about American dining customs that baffle foreigners.
- 3:29Speaker 3: So I thought I'd kind of, I could hear an accident,
- 3:31Speaker 3: so I thought I'd bounce some of these off you.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Sure, go for it.
- 3:35Speaker 1: All right.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Finishing all your meal 100%. In some countries, it means
- 3:38Speaker 3: you didn't get enough and your host has let you down.
- 3:40Speaker 4: No. Not in my country. Right.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 3:46Speaker 3: What about expecting service in a restaurant to be immediate
- 3:50Speaker 3: and having your server be exactly on your schedule?
- 3:53Speaker 4: I mean, some people are, but I'm pretty easygoing. I mean,
- 3:57Speaker 4: if you are like half an hour to take my order,
- 4:01Speaker 4: I think that's not good service, but You don't have to, like,
- 4:05Speaker 4: walk in the door and take my order straight away. But, again,
- 4:10Speaker 4: I'm not everyone.
- 4:11Speaker 3: What about blowing your nose in public? Apparently, people and
- 4:14Speaker 3: foreigners don't really get that. Why do Americans do that?
- 4:19Speaker 1: Good Lord.
- 4:22Speaker 4: I do, but I try to do it in, like, privately.
- 4:27Speaker 4: But I don't do it, like, you know. Yeah, that's
- 4:32Speaker 4: a tough one.
- 4:33Speaker 1: That's a tough one, Shannon. What were your questions about
- 4:36Speaker 1: Jingle Ball?
- 4:37Speaker 4: I just got onto the radio. My daughter really wants
- 4:40Speaker 4: to go, and I thought you were giving away tickets.
- 4:43Speaker 1: We are. You've got to keep listening. We're paying your bills.
- 4:46Speaker 3: When you listen for the keyword, you hear your bills,
- 4:49Speaker 3: time to listen for the keyword, and you're thrown in
- 4:51Speaker 3: the hopper if you win to go to Madison Square
- 4:54Speaker 3: Garden to go see Jingle Ball in New York City.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. I know.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Wow.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Okay, so I've got to listen for the key word.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Keep listening, Shannon. Thank you for listening. Thanks for calling me.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And welcome to America.
- 5:07Speaker 4: I've been here for 15 years.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Thank you. That's why it's not weird for her to
- 5:12Speaker 1: split a meal.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Thank you, Shannon.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Yeah, there was a bunch of, a couple of things
- 5:20Speaker 3: on here. It says, someone said, I like what, the
- 5:22Speaker 3: thing I like about Americans visiting is how friendly they
- 5:24Speaker 3: are with strangers. In my country, locals are often, look
- 5:27Speaker 3: like they're constipated. So that random smiling and chatting is
- 5:30Speaker 3: very welcome. Anyway, just some fun stuff there.
