- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome back to the Intel with Greg Cosell on
- 0:10Speaker 1: Inside the Birds. I'm Jeff Mosher with Adam Kaplan and
- 0:13Speaker 1: we got Greg Cosell. And this is part two of
- 0:15Speaker 1: a NFL Free agency two part podcast that we're doing
- 0:19Speaker 1: going through the free agent signings. We did the defense
- 0:23Speaker 1: in the first one, and now we are going to
- 0:25Speaker 1: do the offense. Not as many big name signings, but
- 0:28Speaker 1: certainly some big name moves. And you know, Greg, the
- 0:31Speaker 1: Eagles were pretty quiet on this front until the second
- 0:34Speaker 1: day or night i should say, a free agency when
- 0:37Speaker 1: they started to address the tight end group and they
- 0:40Speaker 1: bring in Johnny munt which I think we'll get your
- 0:43Speaker 1: thoughts on what that means for the scheme, and then
- 0:46Speaker 1: they bring back Grant Calcaterra there as well. So when
- 0:50Speaker 1: you look at those two tight ends, two very different
- 0:52Speaker 1: tight ends, what does it signal to you?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Well, Johnny Munz knows the system extremely well.
- 0:57Speaker 3: He was with the Rams and he was with the Jaguars,
- 0:59Speaker 3: and that's that that's the system and vikings right right.
- 1:03Speaker 3: So he you know, you're bringing in a guy that
- 1:05Speaker 3: knows the system backwards and forwards. He doesn't have to
- 1:09Speaker 3: be taught how to play in the system. And you know,
- 1:13Speaker 3: one could argue that we always look at the past
- 1:16Speaker 3: game and everyone wants to talk about Jalen Hurts, he's
- 1:19Speaker 3: the quarterback. Obviously people talk about quarterbacks. But this is
- 1:22Speaker 3: this is really foundationally a run game system. And you know,
- 1:26Speaker 3: I think with Johnny Munt, he's a he's a very
- 1:29Speaker 3: very good inline blocker, and which we know Calcatara is not.
- 1:33Speaker 3: So you know, I think that a player like that
- 1:36Speaker 3: who understands everything about how it's taught, how it has
- 1:39Speaker 3: to be executed, he can almost teach the other guys.
- 1:42Speaker 3: You know, and he's a veteran. I don't know, you know,
- 1:44Speaker 3: I was going our own personally, but I imagine he's one
- 1:46Speaker 3: of those guys that's that's good at all that. Otherwise
- 1:49Speaker 3: he really wouldn't be in the league very long because
- 1:51Speaker 3: he's not a super talent. So I think he was
- 1:54Speaker 3: brought in because you can line him up in line
- 1:56Speaker 3: and he knows the system and they can run the
- 1:58Speaker 3: ball and and that's why he was brought in.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Simple as that.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Pretty much his entire cur jeff It was in the
- 2:04Speaker 4: West Coast offense. He was with Liam Cohen West Coast.
- 2:09Speaker 4: He started his career with McVeigh and seventeen was there
- 2:12Speaker 4: for a while and that's how he got it. You know,
- 2:13Speaker 4: he got on the map. Honestly, he stood out as
- 2:17Speaker 4: an undirected free agent and he was on off the
- 2:20Speaker 4: roster of your own. But once he made it, he
- 2:22Speaker 4: became one of those why tight ends. We've talked about
- 2:25Speaker 4: this for years. Coaches love why. It's hard to find
- 2:28Speaker 4: these guys.
- 2:29Speaker 3: And you know, again, you never know if this is
- 2:31Speaker 3: a true trend or you know what's going to happen
- 2:33Speaker 3: in the league this year, but you know, teams have
- 2:36Speaker 3: been playing more with multiple tight ends. I mean it's,
- 2:39Speaker 3: you know, just the way the league seems to move now.
- 2:41Speaker 3: So he's but that's why he's there. He knows the
- 2:45Speaker 3: system and he's a very good in line blocker.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yes, I believe that Saun Mannion was a like a
- 2:50Speaker 1: practice squad quarterback for the Vikings at the same time
- 2:52Speaker 1: overlapping when yeah, sure was there. I don't know if
- 2:55Speaker 1: you guys all remember this, but you know how Eagles
- 2:58Speaker 1: fans get crazy on things. There was a game against
- 3:01Speaker 1: the Vikings where Hassan Reddick had to drop into coverage
- 3:04Speaker 1: for the Eagles in the red zone and the ball
- 3:06Speaker 1: got thrown to Johnny Munt and he caught it for
- 3:08Speaker 1: a first down, and I think the Vikings went on
- 3:11Speaker 1: to score. And I just remember the next day, why
- 3:13Speaker 1: is Hassan Reddick dropping in the right? You know, john
- 3:17Speaker 1: was a talking point.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Was one of those guys when he did catch a pass,
- 3:21Speaker 3: which is relatively infrequently, he went, oh my god, Johnny.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Mount caught a pass.
- 3:26Speaker 2: He's not there to catch passes.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Right Well, speaking of passes, let's get to the quarterback group.
- 3:33Speaker 4: I was expecting Milik Willis went to Miami, but we
- 3:36Speaker 4: kind of all thought that was going to happen. Milike Willis,
- 3:38Speaker 4: Greg you've watched his tape, Let's talk about what's it
- 3:41Speaker 4: looked like and how do you think it fits in here?
- 3:43Speaker 2: Willis is a very hard evaluation.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Because, first of all, the most passes he's thrown in
- 3:50Speaker 3: the game was his rookie season with Tennessee when he
- 3:53Speaker 3: certainly wasn't ready to play, and that was twenty three passes.
- 3:56Speaker 3: So the sample size of Malik Willis actually dropping back.
- 4:00Speaker 3: And you know, in a sense, going through a progression
- 4:03Speaker 3: and making a throw is extremely limited, extremely limited. Now,
- 4:09Speaker 3: what Malik Willis brings to the table because he is
- 4:11Speaker 3: a dynamic, dynamic runner and a great athlete. Is he
- 4:15Speaker 3: brings all those other elements that for many are increasingly
- 4:19Speaker 3: important at the quarterback position. And Jeff Hafley, it clearly
- 4:23Speaker 3: knows him because he was just in Green Bay with him.
- 4:26Speaker 3: So Jeff Hafley and I would assume that his point
- 4:30Speaker 3: of view as a defensive coach is that a quarterback
- 4:33Speaker 3: like Willis is very hard to defend because of the
- 4:37Speaker 3: run game element, both by design and the scrambling element.
- 4:40Speaker 3: But if you're trying to evaluate Willis and his ability
- 4:43Speaker 3: to play what we would view as more traditional quarterback,
- 4:47Speaker 3: dropping back, reading coverage, the sample size is too small
- 4:52Speaker 3: to do anything but make a projection.
- 4:55Speaker 5: You know what?
- 4:56Speaker 4: And Greg what I'd add? You know how much they
- 4:58Speaker 4: know this player? The head coach, the general manager, and
- 5:01Speaker 4: John Robinson, yes, the guy who actually drafted and Robinson's
- 5:04Speaker 4: now on the Miami Jeff as a senior executive. Jeff,
- 5:08Speaker 4: So if anyone knows them, it's them. And I was
- 5:11Speaker 4: talking to someone and pro personnel from a team for
- 5:14Speaker 4: free agency. He goes, you know what, because he is job,
- 5:16Speaker 4: he had a great the quarterbacks.
- 5:18Speaker 5: He goes.
- 5:18Speaker 4: You saw some really good things last year and Sean
- 5:20Speaker 4: Mannion was his quarterbacks coach.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Yeah, like this guy, he's got a good arm.
- 5:24Speaker 4: He's just a little small but gray Jeff actually as
- 5:28Speaker 4: a center back to you, they guaranteed forty five million
- 5:32Speaker 4: over two years. I know it's average per year is
- 5:34Speaker 4: twenty twenty eight million, which is a low and starter,
- 5:36Speaker 4: but the way they structured it, he's gonna have to
- 5:39Speaker 4: be really bad for him not to come back to
- 5:40Speaker 4: the start in here two.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Jeff, or you're on a rookie and you're you know,
- 5:45Speaker 1: whose salary would be low and negates it if they
- 5:47Speaker 1: happen to be terrible next year and have the number
- 5:49Speaker 1: one pick for the following Yeah.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Keep in mind that Bobby Slow, it's THEOC there, right
- 5:53Speaker 2: y yep.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I was just about to bring that.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Up and his background in San Francisco, which foundationally you
- 6:00Speaker 3: have the outside zone run game, You've got a lot
- 6:02Speaker 3: of boot action, that's a part of it. You know,
- 6:04Speaker 3: you can even lean into more boot action because of Willis,
- 6:08Speaker 3: So you know this could work now again in every
- 6:13Speaker 3: game you're gonna have third downs where you do have
- 6:16Speaker 3: to drop back, but then the defense also has to
- 6:19Speaker 3: deal with the fact that Willis can run, so you know,
- 6:23Speaker 3: it's the reality is is that the quarterbacks that can
- 6:27Speaker 3: move and make plays with their legs, particularly on third down,
- 6:31Speaker 3: they are really difficult to defend. I remember having a
- 6:34Speaker 3: great conversation with Dean P's a number of years ago
- 6:37Speaker 3: about these kinds of quarterbacks, and he said, you almost
- 6:40Speaker 3: have to have two defenses on these kinds of downs.
- 6:43Speaker 3: You have to have the first two seconds where you
- 6:44Speaker 3: play your defense, and then everything after that where you
- 6:48Speaker 3: almost have to have another defense because of the way
- 6:51Speaker 3: the quarterbacks can move. So they're very, very difficult to defend.
- 6:55Speaker 3: And as I said, with Jeff Hafley being a defensive coach,
- 6:58Speaker 3: he probably knows how difficult that is.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yep. By the way, don't forget who their past
- 7:03Speaker 1: game coordinator now is.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Oh yeah, right, that's right. Yea.
- 7:09Speaker 3: By the way, contrary to you know what Eagles fans think,
- 7:12Speaker 3: he is highly respected around the league.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Highly respected.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I believe it was Hathley who said he Patullo blew
- 7:19Speaker 1: him away.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Yeah, oh no, he's highly respected around the league very much.
- 7:24Speaker 1: So all right, big acquisition for the Chiefs, Greg. They
- 7:28Speaker 1: finally get a running back they can play on, uh yeah,
- 7:31Speaker 1: a lot. Then that's Kenneth Walker. And then you know,
- 7:34Speaker 1: we'll we'll also talk about New Orleans getting Travis etn
- 7:36Speaker 1: But Kenneth Walker. Is that just the running game that
- 7:39Speaker 1: the Chiefs have needed and not helps you.
- 7:41Speaker 3: An interesting team because you know, because of Mahomes and
- 7:45Speaker 3: obviously Mahomes is great, that's you know, you almost feel
- 7:47Speaker 3: like you have to qualify that Mahomes is great, but
- 7:49Speaker 3: they've not been a great offensive team the last three years.
- 7:52Speaker 3: That's just the reality. So they've been unable to run
- 7:57Speaker 3: the football. And Mahomes is now getting older, he's coming
- 7:59Speaker 3: on al. I'm not saying that his career is over.
- 8:02Speaker 3: I mean, he could play for ten more years and
- 8:04Speaker 3: be great. No one knows the answer to that, but
- 8:07Speaker 3: they probably on a certain level feel like that they
- 8:11Speaker 3: need to be able to run the ball with not
- 8:14Speaker 3: only production, but with a little more volume. That they
- 8:17Speaker 3: need to come out and run the ball, you know.
- 8:20Speaker 3: And Walker. The thing about Walker is, I thought in
- 8:23Speaker 3: the second half of this season he became a much
- 8:26Speaker 3: better runner. He was always the way I described him,
- 8:29Speaker 3: even watching his college tape and through his first couple
- 8:32Speaker 3: of years with the Seahawks is he was more jazz
- 8:35Speaker 3: musician improvisation than classical pianist playing the notes. He would
- 8:39Speaker 3: always look for something, and I thought in the second
- 8:42Speaker 3: half of this season he started to get hard yards.
- 8:46Speaker 3: And he always has the ability to break it because
- 8:48Speaker 3: he's explosive, but I thought that he started to get
- 8:50Speaker 3: the hard yards, which keeps your offense on track. So
- 8:55Speaker 3: he's a very good back because he can break it.
- 8:58Speaker 3: He is a home run hitter, and I think he
- 9:01Speaker 3: can carry two hundred and fifty two hundred seventy times.
- 9:03Speaker 3: I think he's that kind of back.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:05Speaker 4: The only question is, because this came up with Seattle,
- 9:08Speaker 4: is he's not in on every third down. They had
- 9:10Speaker 4: Holwane on there and Zach Charmona right right, so that
- 9:15Speaker 4: would be look the contract you.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Can't find Again, I don't want to say they're easy
- 9:19Speaker 3: to find. It's not like you go to the store
- 9:20Speaker 3: to find a third down back, but you can find
- 9:23Speaker 3: a guy like for a couple of years they had
- 9:25Speaker 3: McKinnon was a great.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Third down back.
- 9:27Speaker 3: I think they can find a guy that could play
- 9:29Speaker 3: in those kinds of situations.
- 9:31Speaker 4: I'm interested, though, because of the money that they're paying
- 9:34Speaker 4: him Walker.
- 9:35Speaker 5: Yeah, you would want him to play.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And he may. He may. I don't think he's a
- 9:39Speaker 2: terrible blocker.
- 9:41Speaker 5: He's not good.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I don't think he's terror I think he gives effort.
- 9:44Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, cool, Greg.
- 9:46Speaker 1: The Saints are going to be an interesting team going
- 9:48Speaker 1: into next year because they finished so strong. It appears
- 9:50Speaker 1: that maybe they've they found their guy in Tyler Shuck.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I thought that'd actually be bigger spenders. And there's still
- 9:56Speaker 1: plenty of time left. But they do bring in Travis
- 9:58Speaker 1: Etn Now they still have come. We'll have to see what.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Happens kind of close to the end.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I mean I love album Kamara, you know, and I
- 10:04Speaker 3: think everybody does. I mean, he's had a great career.
- 10:06Speaker 3: He's been a terrific player, just an all around player, runner, receiver, blocker,
- 10:12Speaker 3: just really a good football player.
- 10:14Speaker 4: So, Jeffrey, you should know that they they restructured. He
- 10:17Speaker 4: had one year left, so to the cover of the cap,
- 10:19Speaker 4: he just restructured the last year, which is over. The
- 10:22Speaker 4: total cash is for ever eleven million. I know they
- 10:25Speaker 4: do some strange things there with contracts. I'm sure they
- 10:27Speaker 4: could trade them, but why would you do that when
- 10:29Speaker 4: you just restructured.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I think it's benefit to have both of
- 10:32Speaker 1: those guys if you're trying to build up a little
- 10:33Speaker 1: bit here, you know, a nice little committee.
- 10:35Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it Actually it could be an interesting
- 10:37Speaker 5: two back system.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:39Speaker 3: I mean, AHTN obviously is a home run hitter, or
- 10:41Speaker 3: he can take it to the house. It'll be interesting
- 10:43Speaker 3: to see what the balance of division of labor is
- 10:46Speaker 3: with those two backs.
- 10:47Speaker 5: Agree.
- 10:48Speaker 3: You know, Kamara is at the point of career where
- 10:49Speaker 3: he's probably not a two hundred and twenty carry, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 3: you know, but he's so good in past pro He's
- 10:55Speaker 3: a terrific receiver. I mean, I could see him carrying
- 10:58Speaker 3: one hundred and forty hundred and fifty times in ATN
- 11:00Speaker 3: carrying one hundred and ninety times, you know, that kind
- 11:02Speaker 3: of thing. But ATN is explosive. But you're right about Chuck,
- 11:06Speaker 3: I mean, Shuck, you know, he's going to be their quarterback.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Interesting.
- 11:11Speaker 1: If they keep all of Alave and then maybe just
- 11:13Speaker 1: add one more pass weapon, they certainly can compete there
- 11:16Speaker 1: with the with the Panthers and the Bucks there and
- 11:18Speaker 1: the NFC South all of a sudden looks pretty interesting
- 11:20Speaker 1: to me after kind of years of being you know,
- 11:23Speaker 1: very mid How about the Bills, Craig they get they
- 11:27Speaker 1: trade for DJ Moore. This is probably their best overall
- 11:30Speaker 1: wide receiver since since Defon Diggs was Yeah, do you
- 11:34Speaker 1: expect that to have a big, big impact on their offense?
- 11:36Speaker 2: Well, you would assume it would.
- 11:38Speaker 3: I mean, he is a professional receiver and for a
- 11:40Speaker 3: number of years he was a number one receiver on Carolina.
- 11:44Speaker 3: He may not be that big time number one, but
- 11:46Speaker 3: for them he will be. And he's a good receiver.
- 11:49Speaker 3: I mean he you know, they didn't have receivers and
- 11:53Speaker 3: I really like Shakir, but he's not a number one,
- 11:57Speaker 3: you know, So and we'll see. You know, one thing
- 11:59Speaker 3: I'm really curious to see is, you know, Joe Brady
- 12:03Speaker 3: has a lot of experience, and you wonder, I mean
- 12:07Speaker 3: I wonder. I don't know the answer to this. You
- 12:10Speaker 3: don't know when you have a defensive head coach and
- 12:11Speaker 3: Sean McDermott, what the relationship is between Sean McDermott and
- 12:15Speaker 3: Joe Brady. You know, Joe Brady now being the head coach,
- 12:18Speaker 3: do we start to see an expansion of offensive concepts.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Don't forget he was with Sean Payton, you know, for
- 12:26Speaker 3: two years before he got the LSU job.
- 12:29Speaker 2: You know, so.
- 12:29Speaker 3: He's been with really good people. So now that he's
- 12:34Speaker 3: in charge, do we do it? You know, they've been
- 12:38Speaker 3: really big on Oh we're going to be you know,
- 12:40Speaker 3: have a great ratio of run to pass. They've been
- 12:43Speaker 3: about fifty percent the last couple of years. Does that
- 12:45Speaker 3: go out the window now that they become much more
- 12:48Speaker 3: of a passing team? I mean, obviously they've got a
- 12:50Speaker 3: pretty good quarterback. So do they become more of a
- 12:53Speaker 3: passing team now that they have more I'm not saying
- 12:55Speaker 3: they don't, you know, they give up on James Cook.
- 12:58Speaker 3: It's not as if he's not a factor at all,
- 13:00Speaker 3: but it seemed like they they were one of the
- 13:03Speaker 3: strongest run first teams in the league the last couple
- 13:06Speaker 3: of years. Yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Yeah, sort of felt like a caged animal with I mean, now,
- 13:11Speaker 1: you mentioned Sean Payton, but he's also talked about the
- 13:14Speaker 1: influence of Joe Morehead when he was at Penn State,
- 13:16Speaker 1: and Morehead was a guy I mean, Penncey had his
- 13:18Speaker 1: best offense in like decades under I.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Mean, keep in mind, you know, again, the Broncos with
- 13:23Speaker 3: Sean Payton this past year did not have that kind
- 13:25Speaker 3: of running back like James Cook. But but bo Nicks
- 13:28Speaker 3: had the most drop backs of any quarterback in the
- 13:30Speaker 3: league this year. So I'm not saying that Josh Allen's
- 13:33Speaker 3: gonna have the most dropbacks of any quarterback in the league.
- 13:36Speaker 3: I'm just saying I wonder if they're there, their ratio
- 13:39Speaker 3: is going to change a little bit now that that
- 13:41Speaker 3: Joe Brady is in charge.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Right Well, if you looked at We've talked this before
- 13:45Speaker 4: about the Bills receivers, as someone I respect told me
- 13:47Speaker 4: he goes through that they've got a bunch of number
- 13:49Speaker 4: threees and I love that line because they don't have
- 13:51Speaker 4: a starting receiver. Now they have a starting receiver Jeff
- 13:53Speaker 4: so at least.
- 13:54Speaker 5: That could go on.
- 13:54Speaker 4: And you know, now Morris numbers were down less seas,
- 13:57Speaker 4: but he's playing with the young he had been playing
- 13:58Speaker 4: with a young quarterback. I'll be interested to see what
- 14:03Speaker 4: the past target group looks like. Is it totally is
- 14:05Speaker 4: very very heavy to him. Probably they traded for him,
- 14:08Speaker 4: but they've got tight ends who could play.
- 14:10Speaker 5: Yep, Shakira is a nice see. Kaku is a.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Good player who was stuck in his system that well,
- 14:18Speaker 3: they didn't throw it a lot. I mean, I'm not
- 14:19Speaker 3: saying Shakira is great. You know, he's obviously not at
- 14:22Speaker 3: number one, but I think he's close to being a
- 14:25Speaker 3: two if you have a good one, you know, and
- 14:28Speaker 3: now we don't know exactly what more is right at
- 14:31Speaker 3: this point in his career.
- 14:32Speaker 5: For them, he's a big upgrade.
- 14:33Speaker 3: But we don't know what he is if you're just
- 14:35Speaker 3: doing him as an abstraction in a vacuum. But for
- 14:38Speaker 3: the Bills, he's a big upgrade. That's the bottom mine.
- 14:40Speaker 4: They didn't have anybody right, I mean, they got Josh
- 14:42Speaker 4: Palmer was hurt almost the entire season. They have enough
- 14:45Speaker 4: now to compete with the passing game.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Yeah, Greg stay going back to the division with the Giants.
- 14:50Speaker 1: You know, we know that John Harbaugh for eighteen years
- 14:53Speaker 1: in Baltimore was basically you know, a lot of tight ends,
- 14:56Speaker 1: especially over the last few years, a lot of twelve personnel. Now,
- 14:59Speaker 1: they bring Isaiah Likely in from Baltimore. They have Theo Johnson.
- 15:04Speaker 1: They re signed Chris man Hurtz I believe, so they've
- 15:06Speaker 1: got some tight ends there. But they also have Milik
- 15:09Speaker 1: Neighbors coming back. They lose wan Dale Robinson to the Titans.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Does this start to look like a ravens Ish offense
- 15:16Speaker 1: in New York with multiple tight ends.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:18Speaker 3: They also just signed Patrick Riccard, so it's right. I mean,
- 15:22Speaker 3: you know, again, I'm not gonna make a value judgment here.
- 15:26Speaker 2: This is what they believe.
- 15:27Speaker 3: But I doubt they signed Patrick Riccard to play three
- 15:30Speaker 3: snaps a game. So you know, I think you're going
- 15:33Speaker 3: to see a base offense. I mean, you know that.
- 15:36Speaker 3: That's look. I mean, I know, I know Matt Naggi's
- 15:41Speaker 3: the OC, but it seems like you know that again,
- 15:45Speaker 3: we're not there.
- 15:46Speaker 2: But if you bring in Patrick Riccard, aren't you.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Gonna play a lot of twenty you know you're gonna
- 15:51Speaker 3: be on the field, you know, twenty snaps a game
- 15:54Speaker 3: or fifteen or twenty snaps the game.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Sure, if you bring him in, I mean, why are
- 15:57Speaker 2: you signing him?
- 15:58Speaker 3: So you know, I would assume that you're going to
- 16:00Speaker 3: see a lot of base personnel until they get to
- 16:02Speaker 3: you know, those pure pass and third down situations.
- 16:05Speaker 5: Yeah, we're card. I'd have to look at Maggie's career.
- 16:08Speaker 4: I don't remember that him having much work with the
- 16:11Speaker 4: fullback obviously Roman did, but Roman's not calling the place.
- 16:13Speaker 4: So it's it's gonna be a change here. But the
- 16:17Speaker 4: Jeff the Giants, they brought back Jermaine a Luminor. We
- 16:20Speaker 4: just talked about kind of who they brought in their
- 16:23Speaker 4: offensive line. To me is what's held them up. It's
- 16:26Speaker 4: Andrew Thomas and his injury history. It's they're okay, Lumros
- 16:31Speaker 4: back at right tackle, right guards is up and then
- 16:35Speaker 4: Neighbors coming back from the acel.
- 16:36Speaker 5: You got to see how he moves back from that injury.
- 16:39Speaker 4: But they've got the makings if they could get the
- 16:42Speaker 4: offensive line to just to take the next level.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Yep, and Scattabow is back.
- 16:47Speaker 4: I mean, it's a big it's a bad injury, but
- 16:49Speaker 4: he'll he'll be ready to go for training camp well
- 16:51Speaker 4: before that.
- 16:52Speaker 5: There's something here with this offense here. It's gonna be fascinating.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Because, yeah, who they to be a tackle and now
- 17:01Speaker 3: he's basically competing at a guard spot. So you know,
- 17:06Speaker 3: but you know, you have to assume they're gonna play
- 17:09Speaker 3: a lot at a base personnel.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I know that Naggy and Chicago didn't do that,
- 17:14Speaker 1: but I mean, I think he's gonna have to go
- 17:15Speaker 1: back just based on the personnel and what you do best.
- 17:18Speaker 1: He's gonna have to go back to his pre Chicago,
- 17:21Speaker 1: his early Andy Reid days of using the two tight ends,
- 17:24Speaker 1: the full back, and I.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Mean they got they got like Theo Johnson I think
- 17:27Speaker 3: is a pretty good player.
- 17:29Speaker 2: And now they have like Lean Johnson. They have Man Hurts,
- 17:31Speaker 2: who's a good blocker.
- 17:33Speaker 3: I mean, that's why he's in the league, and that's
- 17:34Speaker 3: why he's been in the league for what ten years already?
- 17:36Speaker 2: At him, I mean the guy Yead he's played forever
- 17:40Speaker 2: because he fills a row. You know, in some ways,
- 17:43Speaker 2: he's like Johnny munt Hey.

- 19:49Speaker 4: Hey, staying in the receiver position, I just want to
- 19:52Speaker 4: talk about Romeo Dobbs with I love this signing. I
- 19:55Speaker 4: know they're excited about it. What are your thoughts with
- 19:57Speaker 4: Dobbs and the poll?
- 19:57Speaker 3: They obviously needed receivers and you you know, there's there's
- 20:01Speaker 3: totally different philosophies with young quarterbacks. Some teams believe that, hey,
- 20:07Speaker 3: you got to really surround him with players. Other teams believe, hey,
- 20:11Speaker 3: let's get a great defense because then he doesn't have
- 20:13Speaker 3: to score a lot of points. I mean, there's different philosophies.
- 20:16Speaker 3: You know, there's no right or wrong. I'm of the
- 20:19Speaker 3: philosophy again, just my pointless point of view that you
- 20:23Speaker 3: should surround a young quarterback, you know, with a good
- 20:26Speaker 3: old line and players and and and let him work.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Like That's why what I think doesn't matter for Tennessee.
- 20:33Speaker 3: But if I was Tennessee, I would take care of
- 20:34Speaker 3: my I love it for but that's just me. But anyway, Uh,
- 20:39Speaker 3: you know, I think that the Patriots needed receivers. They
- 20:41Speaker 3: lost Diggs, who you know, had a very good year
- 20:43Speaker 3: for them. Say what you want, he had a very
- 20:44Speaker 3: good season. He's a professional receiver.
- 20:47Speaker 2: You know.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Dobbs is a good receiver. They needed a wide receiver.
- 20:52Speaker 3: You know, it's that's a good move. And I think
- 20:54Speaker 3: Keishaun Booty is a good player. You know, he was
- 20:58Speaker 3: an interesting guy because he had all kinds of troubles
- 20:59Speaker 3: and college after his freshman year, personal things, character issues.
- 21:04Speaker 3: I don't know, you know, the status of all that stuff.
- 21:08Speaker 3: I know that that Mike Rabel is a pretty intense,
- 21:10Speaker 3: you know, tough head coach that you know, I'm sure
- 21:13Speaker 3: if conversations there need to be had, Rabel's gonna have him.
- 21:16Speaker 3: He's not He's not a standoffish guy. You know, he's
- 21:19Speaker 3: gonna have So, you know, I think it's a really
- 21:24Speaker 3: good signing. I've always liked do Obs. I liked him
- 21:26Speaker 3: for coming out of college.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see if they don't wind
- 21:29Speaker 1: up trading for AJ or do much more if it
- 21:31Speaker 1: is Kyle Williams ready to take a bigger step in
- 21:34Speaker 1: year two, because it feels like they lack that true X.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Dobbs is not an X.
- 21:38Speaker 3: He's a movie not he can but not like you know,
- 21:41Speaker 3: not your class right now. I know they really like
- 21:45Speaker 3: Kyle Williams, but he's not an EX. But I know
- 21:47Speaker 3: they really like him, So maybe he takes a big
- 21:49Speaker 3: jump from his rookie year to a second year.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, along the same lines of uh, you know,
- 21:54Speaker 1: needing an ex.
- 21:54Speaker 5: Greg.
- 21:55Speaker 1: So last year when the Steelers traded for Metcalf, I
- 21:59Speaker 1: think we all talked about, well, how are you gonna
- 22:01Speaker 1: make it work with Metcalf and George Pickens because they
- 22:04Speaker 1: who's not the ex? Is the question? And then of
- 22:06Speaker 1: course they trade picks of Dallas. And now the Steelers
- 22:09Speaker 1: trade for Pittman after the Colts resigned Alec Pearce, and
- 22:13Speaker 1: you've got Metcalf and Pittman, and I find myself asking
- 22:17Speaker 1: the same questions. Unless I'm I'm off based on this,
- 22:19Speaker 1: don't these both kind.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Of your I don't think Pittman is an ex No, okay, uh,
- 22:24Speaker 3: well that's put this way. I don't think that's his
- 22:26Speaker 3: best spy. So I think Metcalf will be the X,
- 22:30Speaker 3: and I think Pittman will be kind of the movement Z.
- 22:32Speaker 1: He's a big guy though, right, Pittman's a pretty yah.
- 22:35Speaker 3: Well, they've got two big guys at Metcalf and Pittman.
- 22:37Speaker 3: They've got a basketball team there. Yeah, you know, but
- 22:40Speaker 3: I but Pittman, Pittman is is not going to be now,
- 22:44Speaker 3: depending on given formations, can he be sure? But I
- 22:46Speaker 3: don't think in terms of foundationally, I think Metcalf will
- 22:50Speaker 3: be the X and Pittman.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Will be the Z, and then he'll be a movement guy.
- 22:54Speaker 5: One more thing on the Steels receivers.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Their thought process is they're going to give Rowan Wilson
- 22:57Speaker 4: a better shot to.
- 22:58Speaker 5: Be the three.
- 22:59Speaker 4: The former staff did not like him, but they just
- 23:01Speaker 4: were down on him. But the feeling here is Adam Henry.
- 23:05Speaker 4: If you might remember the receivers coach used to be
- 23:06Speaker 4: with the Giants and the Rag he was with the Bills.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Is he now with Pittsburgh.
- 23:10Speaker 5: Yeah, he actually coached OBJ and j L.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Yeah. No, Adam he's he's a good coach.
- 23:16Speaker 5: Yeah, he's a good coach.
- 23:17Speaker 4: So their hope because they feel like Robin Wilson could separate.
- 23:20Speaker 5: He just never really got it.
- 23:21Speaker 4: He got hurt, and Tomlin and others got down on
- 23:24Speaker 4: him because he just didn't get a chance.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Well, Wilson has I remember doing Wilson coming out of Michigan. He's,
- 23:30Speaker 3: he's he's got some juice to him. I mean, he
- 23:33Speaker 3: would fit well if he could be the number three
- 23:35Speaker 3: there and and really win that job at him. You know,
- 23:38Speaker 3: he's got some juice.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Right right, all right, very interesting stuff. Oh, I guess
- 23:43Speaker 1: we should also. I mean Wandelle Robinson's fit in Tennessee
- 23:46Speaker 1: and I guess he becomes sort of their volume middle
- 23:49Speaker 1: of the field receiver.
- 23:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:51Speaker 3: I mean, look, Wandelle Robinson had the most targets in
- 23:53Speaker 3: the slot from any receiver in the league last year.
- 23:56Speaker 3: That's who he is now again, Now you get into
- 24:00Speaker 3: you know, and this is where the league's going. You
- 24:02Speaker 3: get into teams now with so much pre snap movement.
- 24:05Speaker 3: I mean, he's a slot He's obviously not gonna line
- 24:07Speaker 3: up static on the outside, but with pre snap movement,
- 24:11Speaker 3: with things like that, he can release as from the
- 24:15Speaker 3: outside off movement, but he's not gonna line up as
- 24:18Speaker 3: a static outside receiver. But they really like their two rookies.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Iomano played X last year quite a bit, almost as
- 24:27Speaker 3: much as any receiver in the league. He lined up
- 24:28Speaker 3: as the boundary X. And they really like DK who's
- 24:32Speaker 3: kind of a movement guy. So you know, you know,
- 24:36Speaker 3: they they feel like I'm sure that they have, you know,
- 24:39Speaker 3: some pieces in place, and you know, the old line
- 24:42Speaker 3: it got a little bit better for them as the
- 24:44Speaker 3: season progressed. That's why to me, you know, and they've
- 24:48Speaker 3: addressed defense big time in free agency, so to me,
- 24:52Speaker 3: you know, I would take Jeremiah Love, but you know,
- 24:54Speaker 3: I doubt, I doubt they're gonna call me and ask
- 24:57Speaker 3: my opinion on that.
- 24:58Speaker 1: All right, Well, that's why you're with us, because we
- 25:00Speaker 1: want your we want your tape breakdown. That's gonna do
- 25:04Speaker 1: it for our look at the first wave of NFL
- 25:07Speaker 1: free agency. We may have a second wave for Greg
- 25:10Speaker 1: and or we might go straight into NFL draft prospects.
- 25:12Speaker 1: It all depends on what unfolds over the next few days.
- 25:16Speaker 1: For Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan. I'm Jeff Mosher, you've
- 25:19Speaker 1: been watching The Intel with Greg Cosell on inside the
- 25:24Speaker 1: Birds
