- 0:11Y también traemos atole calientito.
- 0:11This is episode 56 of onefjef.
- 0:1756.
- 0:20Hola, mis amigos y amigas.
- 0:23It's Jef Taylor.
- 0:25Remember me?
- 0:26It's been a minute, but I'm back.
- 0:28Here we are.
- 0:30We're here.
- 0:31Are you here?
- 0:33I'm here.
- 0:36We're all here, aren't we?
- 0:38That's like a callback to the very first episode, I think, actually.
- 0:42For those of you who have been listening for that long, I love you very much.
- 0:47I love all of you, but if any of you caught the reference,
- 0:51then you get a big old prize.
- 0:55Anyway, yes, this is the first episode back from the hiatus
- 1:00of 2026, as I have dubbed it.
- 1:04It's a great name for the break that I took.
- 1:07The hiatus of 2026.
- 1:09The word hiatus is the word.
- 1:10It's a part of the I really enjoy that.
- 1:12I wonder how you say hiatus in Spanish.
- 1:16I'm sitting here on my terrace here, uh, at my apartment
- 1:21in Roma Norte near Cibeles.
- 1:27Cibeles.
- 1:28Cibeles?
- 1:28Cibeles.
- 1:29Cibeles is a traffic circle.
- 1:32In the middle of that traffic circle, there is a, uh, I believe
- 1:34it's called Cibeles, the statue that is a exact replica of a statue
- 1:39in, um, Mexic- or Spain rather.
- 1:43What city in Spain?
- 1:45Mm, Seville?
- 1:47I don't know.
- 1:47I couldn't tell you that.
- 1:49There's also a replica of David, you know, Mi- Michelangelo's David, in another,
- 1:53uh, park nearby, which also confuses me.
- 1:56There's a lot of strange replicas of things here.
- 2:01Something to think about.
- 2:02Anyway, it's lovely, this terrace.
- 2:06It's lovely.
- 2:07It's a little piece of heaven is what it is, and so it's made a certain
- 2:12element of my life quite nice.
- 2:13I can get up in the morning and walk out on my terrace and drink my coffee and
- 2:16have the sun in my face and look down and see all of the city happening below me.
- 2:21And there's plants.
- 2:22There's bougainvillea, I believe it's called.
- 2:25Bougainvillea, which is a purple, viney, flowery plant.
- 2:29It's very pretty, but it's thorny.
- 2:31So beautiful but dead- not deadly.
- 2:35Dangerous, but deadly sounds better.
- 2:37Sounds good.
- 2:37Beautiful but deadly.
- 2:39Bougainvillea.
- 2:41How have you been, Jeff?
- 2:43I've been all right.
- 2:45It's a mixed bag, really.
- 2:46It's been five months.
- 2:47A little more than five months I've been living in Mexico City, minus a couple
- 2:50month-- weeks that I was in Cleveland, whatever, so four or five months total.
- 2:56And it goes through phases, right?
- 2:58I- it still feels like time has gone very slow because, like, if I was in my
- 3:02house in Columbus and five months went by, I'd be like, "Oh, yeah, five months."
- 3:05But here it feels like I've lived several lives in these
- 3:08five months, four or five months.
- 3:11'Cause I've already moved, for crying out loud.
- 3:12I've already lived in two places.
- 3:13I mean, that's-- Uh, speaking of which, how is the, uh, getting the deposit back
- 3:20going from your last apartment, Jeff?
- 3:22Oh, great question.
- 3:23Thank you for asking.
- 3:24Um, it's not going great.
- 3:26So I hired a lawyer, uh, for twenty-five hundred pesos, which I
- 3:30thought was quite a good deal, really.
- 3:33And this was, I mean, three weeks ago, four weeks ago now.
- 3:37And so he wrote up a, a lawyery letter, sent it to the ex-landlord.
- 3:43No response.
- 3:44Then he kept calling and calling and emailing and just bothering him.
- 3:46And then about a week and a half ago, he messages me, and he's like, "I got
- 3:52a letter back from their lawyer." So he-- Now, my ex-landlord has hired a
- 3:56lawyer, and the ex-landlord's lawyer, you know, wrote something back to
- 4:01my lawyer saying, "Well, no, no, no.
- 4:03It's all wrong." Like, I'm right in this situation, and I'm not
- 4:07just saying that because it's, you know, my brain and my ego.
- 4:10I'm saying it because it's, it's true.
- 4:12I'm correct.
- 4:13I deserve to get my money back.
- 4:15However, whenever I tell anybody that I've got a lawyer to try to
- 4:19get my deposit back, like somebody who's from Mexico or Mexico City,
- 4:22they laugh at me like I'm an idiot.
- 4:24"Ahaha, nobody gives their deposit back here, Jeff.
- 4:28Nobody gets their deposit back here.
- 4:30Ha ha ha ha ha.
- 4:31How naive, gringo." You know what?
- 4:36I get my deposit back.
- 4:37That's who gets their deposit back.
- 4:39I do.
- 4:40Me.
- 4:41God damn it.
- 4:43But apparently, it is a thing.
- 4:44Deposits are not often returned here.
- 4:47But I don't know that that would change my decision to get a lawyer.
- 4:50I think I would still have done it even if I had not been so naive.
- 4:55And I'll take it.
- 4:56Like, it's not e- at this point, it's not even about the money, it's
- 4:58the principle of the thing, right?
- 5:01I don't stand for injustice, particularly when it's, you know, on me.
- 5:06So we'll see how it goes.
- 5:07I'll keep you posted.
- 5:09It's interesting to be, you know, uh, dipping my toe in
- 5:12the Mexican legal system.
- 5:13Who would've thought that would happen four months, five months in?
- 5:17I also had to go to the dentist, which, um, I have to go back to the dentist,
- 5:20which wasn't hoping would happen in the next four, in the four or five months.
- 5:24But I have, like, a toothache.
- 5:25Still do.
- 5:26And I've had teeth problems for years that I've had to get taken care of.
- 5:29I just, I hate the, I fucking hate the dentist.
- 5:32Nothing personal if you're a dentist.
- 5:33I'm sure, I mean, I've met some dentists that are lovely people, but
- 5:36the experience of going to the dentist has always been one that I abhor.
- 5:39I'm an anti-dentite.
- 5:41And when I was, like, eight years old or nine years old, I don't know how old
- 5:43I was, we were going to the dentist.
- 5:45My mom was driving us to the dentist, and I didn't wanna go to the dentist,
- 5:48so I just pretended that I was asleep in the backseat of the car.
- 5:52And I thought, "Oh, well, then she'll, she won't wake me up to go to the
- 5:54dentist." It's, like, middle of the day.
- 5:56She's just gonna be like, "Oh.
- 5:58Oh, Jef, he's asleep.
- 5:59Let's just let him sleep.
- 6:00You don't have to go to the dentist." What kind of logic is that?
- 6:03Like, that's really… Oof.
- 6:07I appreciate my inventiveness, though.
- 6:09Like, what a weird… Anyway, it didn't work.
- 6:11Had to go to the dentist.
- 6:12Probably had a cavity, 'cause I had a lot of cavities when I was a kid.
- 6:16It's weird how you don't wanna brush your teeth when you're a
- 6:18kid, 'cause when you're, get older, it's like, ugh, you didn't brush
- 6:22your teeth before you went to bed?
- 6:23I don't know, maybe I'm just a teeth freak, but, like, it feels gross
- 6:26to go to sleep with dirty teeth.
- 6:28But when you're a kid, you just don't give a shit.
- 6:31Maybe it's 'cause your teeth are bigger when you're an adult.
- 6:36Anyway, I went to the dentist 'cause I had a, you know, a gum toothache, still
- 6:41do, and I was nervous 'cause, you know, you don't know what you're getting.
- 6:45Mexican dentist, I have no idea.
- 6:46I have no idea.
- 6:47I'm not being prejudgmental, but I have no idea.
- 6:50I do know that it's ch- going to be cheaper, which is great.
- 6:54So I go, I find a dentist, like, on some forum, expat forum,
- 6:58whatever, you know, English-speaking dentist, you know, Roma, Condesa.
- 7:01So go there, very nervous, and, uh, no, it was fine.
- 7:06It was fine.
- 7:07It was great, actually.
- 7:08I was like, "Oh, this is not painful." They have all this equipment.
- 7:10They're very nice to me.
- 7:11They're explaining things.
- 7:13And, you know, they said, "We'll, we'll get back to you," the,
- 7:16the, like, the main dentist.
- 7:17It was a dental assistant sort of.
- 7:19"We'll get back to you." And so really nothing traumatic happened
- 7:23at the dentist office at all.
- 7:24They gave me an X-ray, and they took some pictures, and they put some sort of
- 7:28a filling on top of my gum that said-- they said would make it feel better,
- 7:32but it really hasn't done a thing.
- 7:33I have a feeling I have to get, like, major dental work done, and
- 7:36it doesn't please me, but it has to happen because now there's pain.
- 7:39So long story short, I pay, like, $50 for an X-ray and, like, an inspect-
- 7:44an inspection, cleaning, whatever.
- 7:46But I have to go back again.
- 7:48The end.
- 7:49Dentist story of Jef in Mexico City.
- 7:52Hope you enjoyed it.
- 7:54Ups and downs, lefts and rights.
- 7:56It's not over.
- 7:56That's the thing, the dentist story.
- 7:57It will continue.
- 7:59That's what I'm trying to say, is I have a very strong feeling that the
- 8:01Mexican dentist story of my existence here has not reached its climax
- 8:11Some of the garbage bags in Mexico have this string attached
- 8:15to it, and I have no idea why.
- 8:18Uh, I thought about it.
- 8:20I've never looked it up, to be fair.
- 8:22I don't really want to.
- 8:24But they have, like, weird long strings attached to the bottom.
- 8:28And at first I thought it was, like, a mistake.
- 8:30I was like, "There's something wrong with the garbage bag," but no.
- 8:33Every garbage bag has it, so it's clearly not a mistake.
- 8:36And if it is a mistake, then boy, it's a big problem.
- 8:39They've got a real quality control problem with garbage bags in
- 8:41Mexico City because they've all got long strings hanging from them.
- 8:47If anybody knows why the garbage bags in Mexico City have long strings
- 8:50hanging from them, please send me an email, onefjefpod@gmail.com
- 8:59If you're listening to this because you're thinking about moving to Mexico
- 9:02City, which I'm sure is a big, big hunk of my audience, is people like, "What
- 9:06should I…" And then they're like, "What?
- 9:08W- this is not helpful at all.
- 9:09I'm not learning anything about what it's like." But really, my friends, if you
- 9:14think about it, you are learning exactly what it's like to live in Mexico City
- 9:22I may not have tips and tricks, my dear audience, but what I don't
- 9:28have in tips and tricks I make up for in, oh, whatever this is.
- 9:37You tell me.
- 9:38I still don't know what this podcast is
- 9:45But yeah, I'd say in general I'm doing okay.
- 9:48I mean, there's the loneliness.
- 9:51There's the, you know, getting up some days and just not wanting to deal with
- 9:56how difficult it is sometimes to interact with the world that I exist in right
- 9:59now, you know, because of the language.
- 10:02Like it's getting better.
- 10:03My, my, my Spanish is getting better, but it's still not good.
- 10:06Like I had an Amazon package delivered today.
- 10:09It's another horror story.
- 10:10Like Amazon here, they don't want to leave it and they can't get in your building.
- 10:13So you have to just wait all day for your package to come.
- 10:18So number one, I need to start shopping locally, but number two,
- 10:22some things I can't get locally.
- 10:23So I don't need excuses for you.
- 10:26I shop at Amazon, right?
- 10:27That's how it goes.
- 10:28We all do.
- 10:28Let's not pretend.
- 10:30Anyway, order from Amazon, they punish you here for it.
- 10:32So I had to stay home all day and the package didn't come until
- 10:36like 6:45 or something or 6:30.
- 10:39So, I mean, I hadn't even showered.
- 10:42So it's an airplane going over.
- 10:45And part of me felt like, oh, maybe subconsciously I ordered
- 10:49the Amazon package because I didn't want to do anything.
- 10:51I want like a subconscious excuse not to interact with the world tomorrow,
- 10:55but I didn't expect it to come at 6:45.
- 10:57I thought it would come at like 2:00 in the afternoon.
- 10:59So anyway, it's not as interesting a story as I thought it would be when I started
- 11:04jumping in, but they can't all be winners.
- 11:06They can't all be winners.
- 11:12Also started going to therapy again here in Mexico City.
- 11:16Like, maybe I'll go once a month I thought, right?
- 11:20Just to check in, you know?
- 11:22And so I found one quite easily.
- 11:24I, I went… I don't know where I went online, somewhere I'm sure,
- 11:27on the, the internet, whatever.
- 11:28Probably just Googled it.
- 11:31And, uh, yeah, uh, did the therapy in her house, and it, it was great, and she
- 11:36seems great, and it's very nice to be like, "Oh, I have a therapist again,"
- 11:39which is nice, and one that I like, so…
- 11:41And inexpensive as well because, you know.
- 11:44So, so that's good.
- 11:45But anyway, the therapist was telling me at the end of our therapy, she was
- 11:49like, "You know, you ever hear what Salvador Dali apparently…" Years ago,
- 11:55he used to come to Mexico all the time.
- 11:56Mexico's a big surreal art country.
- 12:00A lot of surreal artists come out of Mexico City, and it all makes
- 12:03sense because if you've been…
- 12:04Or not to Mexico City, but Mexico in general, but, you know.
- 12:08And they asked Salvador Dali one time, "Why don't you,
- 12:10why don't you live in Mexico?
- 12:11Why don't you want to move to Mexico?" Or something like that, and he's
- 12:14like, "I would never wanna live in a country as surreal as my art."
- 12:19And it's like, "Yeah, I get it."
- 12:22And then my therapist proceeded to tell me a story about how one time she
- 12:26was in an ice cream shop, and there was an old woman who had a parrot
- 12:30on her shoulder and was feeding the parrot ice cream, an ice cream cone.
- 12:35So.
- 12:37So yeah, there it is.
- 12:38I mean, there's many surreal things about Mexico City.
- 12:42You know, there's the knife seller who blows a whistle as he's biking down the
- 12:45street and has a bike sharp- a knife sharpener on the back of his bike.
- 12:48There's the ringing bell garbage.
- 12:50There's the… I mean, all the, the camote man, for crying
- 12:54out loud, is the strangest.
- 12:56I've talked about it, but there's one in my neighborhood that
- 12:59just, he seems to love this area.
- 13:02He seems… Like weekends, he's just walking around and around and around
- 13:06the building, just blowing that whistle.
- 13:08Insert sound of camote man whistle here
- 13:18Yeah, it's loud.
- 13:19And I can't-- I always think about this camote man 'cause it's like
- 13:22he's walking around all night.
- 13:23You don't often see people buying anything from him.
- 13:26Like, he doesn't seem to sell a lot, but, like, he's out there all night
- 13:31on weekends and all… I mean, just you hear him all-- quite a bit.
- 13:34And it's just like how much money could you possibly be making?
- 13:37I think I bought a camote once, like a, a sweet potato.
- 13:40It was a camote.
- 13:41And I bought one from the camote man, and it was like five dollars,
- 13:47four dollars for the sweet potato, and it wasn't that great.
- 13:50You know, maybe I found a bad camote man, but it wasn't that great.
- 13:54It's a strange job is what I'm saying.
- 13:57You're pushing a cart around like a steamer, essentially, around Mexico City.
- 14:04Do they choose when to blow the whistle, I wonder, or do they have
- 14:07to release the steam every so often?
- 14:09The pressure is… Is it a pressure cooker?
- 14:11It must be a pressure cooker, yeah.
- 14:14But I really wanna know if they can choose when to release the steam.
- 14:17This is why I need to learn Spanish better, so I could ask,
- 14:20I could, like, ask him, you know?
- 14:23Really so… See, I, I don't… I have no idea.
- 14:26Maybe one day.
- 14:27Anyway, weird, surreal to have a guy just wandering around selling sweet
- 14:32potatoes with a whistle that squeals through the entire neighborhood.
- 14:35Like, it-- that sound
- 14:43That guy's gotta be deaf or he wears earplugs.
- 14:46I don't know.
- 14:48God, there's so many questions I have for the kamote man now.
- 14:51Does he eat his own product?
- 14:52I'm sure he does.
- 14:53Does he get sick of s- eating sweet potatoes?
- 14:54Does he-- How many sweet potatoes does he eat?
- 14:58How did he get started?
- 14:58Does he have to buy the cart himself?
- 15:00Is that… Do you have to buy your own cart?
- 15:03Hmm.
- 15:04I don't even think the internet would have answers to a lot of these questions.
- 15:08And AI would pretend to know, but then would be totally wrong about it,
- 15:11as I found it to be quite a bit, so.
- 15:13But yeah, it's a surreal country.
- 15:15That's all.
- 15:16There's a lot of weirdness here
- 15:24Not so surreal, but the speakeasy thing is legitimately
- 15:28out of control in Mexico City.
- 15:30Like, there's all these bars and, like, some of the best bars in the world
- 15:33apparently, and they're like quote-unquote speakeasies because you have to, like,
- 15:36go down a back elevator to get to them.
- 15:38And, like, it's fine, but, like, what-- can we define speakeasy?
- 15:41Can we decide what that means?
- 15:43Because it seems to mean a lot of different things.
- 15:45Now it just seems to mean, like, a hidden bar, right?
- 15:48That's it.
- 15:49'Cause you make reservations for a lot of these places.
- 15:52Like, it's not exclusive, you just walk in.
- 15:55You just need to know where to go.
- 15:57It's like a secret-y thing.
- 16:00What a speakeasy originally was, was where they would sell
- 16:02illegal booze, as we all know.
- 16:05So it's confusing that that's turned into just a… Well, like, the hidden
- 16:09part was always, but they've just kept the hidden part and gotten
- 16:11rid of the illegal alcohol part.
- 16:13Hmm, I'm overthinking this.
- 16:15Apologize.
- 16:20It's rainy season.
- 16:20Summer's rainy season here, and everybody told me rainy season, oh,
- 16:23it rains for like, you know, an hour or so every day at like 5:00 or 6:00.
- 16:29This is what the internet told me.
- 16:30This is what human beings to my face told me many times.
- 16:34But the reality is, at least so far in my experience, it's been not that at all.
- 16:41It doesn't rain necessarily every day.
- 16:43It rains most days.
- 16:45It doesn't rain for one hour at 5:00.
- 16:46Sometimes it rains at 5:00.
- 16:48Sometimes it rains at 8:00.
- 16:51Sometimes it'll start raining at 9:00 or so and continue raining
- 16:54on and off till I go to bed.
- 16:57They should have said, "Oh, rainy season, it, it often rains, but it
- 17:01doesn't start until after 5:00 PM."
- 17:02That should be what, what they say, not it rains every day, because that
- 17:07is… Perhaps some years it does, but this year does not rain every day.
- 17:10But there are insane electrical storms in the city.
- 17:14I've never seen anything like it.
- 17:16These thunderstorms and electric- they just, it echoes through Brit- in like
- 17:19a, we're like a valley kind of in, up in the mountains here, and so it echoes off
- 17:23of the walls of the, the mountains that are around us, I think, or the buildings.
- 17:28I don't know.
- 17:29So it's quite dramatic.
- 17:31The other day, or night rather, there was one going on, and I had
- 17:35all of the h- lights in my house off.
- 17:37Everything was off, and it was like the lights were on 'cause it was just
- 17:40this constant flickering, you know.
- 17:43Plus I was watching TV, so there was light anyways.
- 17:46I should have left that part out of the story.
- 17:49Disregard the part about watching TV.
- 17:50I wasn't actually watching TV.
- 17:52I was.
- 17:53I was watching TV.
- 17:55Sorry.
- 17:59I had dinner with a guy I met, uh, at a Time Left thing a week or two ago.
- 18:06Time Left, you can look it up.
- 18:07It's an app.
- 18:07It's like drinks with strangers.
- 18:09It's just an app that facilitates drinks with people you
- 18:12wouldn't meet, so I do it here.
- 18:13It's fun.
- 18:14You meet other people.
- 18:15Anyway, I had dinner with this guy, Korean barbecue.
- 18:19I'm in heaven because Korean barbecue.
- 18:22And it was great.
- 18:23He's a film guy, and it had been a while since I'd had a filmy conversation,
- 18:28you know, like a talking shop kind of conversation, and it was, it was great.
- 18:35I've been in a bad head space for the last couple weeks.
- 18:38Two or three, four weeks, I've been in a bad head space.
- 18:40Not negative, negative, negative, but, like, just not great.
- 18:45Questioning my decisions, you know.
- 18:47It's all part of the process.
- 18:50It is, and you have to keep reminding yourself of this, that, that all these
- 18:54emotions you have, the loneliness, the frustration, the avoidance, and
- 19:00the positive emotions as well, it's all part of the selling most of your
- 19:06stuff and moving to another country.
- 19:09It's all part of it, that you came here because you were looking for discomfort.
- 19:15So much talk about getting out of your comfort zone, Jef, last year,
- 19:20how great it is, and now here you are outside of your comfort zone.
- 19:24You have to remember that.
- 19:25Perspective is a gift.
- 19:27Anyway, I was walking home, and I don't know.
- 19:30It was one of the first times in a while that I was like, "I felt at
- 19:33home here." That I was like, "Okay, I live in Mexico City, and it's good.
- 19:41It's okay." I even stopped and asked a guy if I could pet his dog, and he
- 19:47understood what I said 'cause I could speak that little minimal Spanish.
- 19:50I asked him how old the dog was, what the dog's name.
- 19:53I felt good about it.
- 19:54It's these little victories.
- 19:56It's these little victories.
- 19:59Patreon subscribers, I love you all.
- 20:03Thank you for sticking with me.
- 20:05Thank you for your support, financial, emotional, all of the things.
- 20:10I really appreciate you, and I apologize for not having as many
- 20:14Patreon-only ex-- events or, or, or, or, or, or recordings or whatever,
- 20:20photos of late, but I will fix that.
- 20:24I will make you feel special again, Patreon subscribers.
- 20:28And if you yourself are listening to this and you're like, "What am I missing
- 20:30out on? What have I seen? What are the Patreon subscribers seeing that,
- 20:33that I haven't seen?" You know what?
- 20:36You can find out.
- 20:37I'm not gonna tell you, but you're gonna find out.
- 20:39You go to patreon.com/onefjef and sign up for as little as $5 a month.
- 20:44That's less than 100 pesos now because the exchange rate keeps getting worse.
- 20:51I should change it to $6 a month 'cause that's 100 pesos because the
- 20:54exchange rate keeps getting worse.
- 20:57The peso keeps getting stronger.
- 20:59Good for the peso.
- 21:01I'm here for it.
- 21:02I'm not happy about it, but I'm here for it.
- 21:05Being here for it, it's like there's no choice.
- 21:07I'm just here.
- 21:08So it's not like I'm bragging.
- 21:09It's-- it sounds like I'm bragging, but really, um, when I'm saying
- 21:12I'm here for it, it just means that I exist in Mexico City right
- 21:17now, and I have to exist with that.
- 21:21It's funny, though, how, like, it is like an ocean, like a wave, right?
- 21:25Your, your emotional state.
- 21:27It goes up, and it goes down.
- 21:29And the, the older I get, the more I realize and, uh, come to accept that
- 21:34it goes up and it goes down because you need the down to appreciate the up.
- 21:39This has been said by many people many, many times.
- 21:42But I'm saying it again because the reason it's been said so many times by so many
- 21:46different people is because it's true.
- 21:48You need the low parts to get the up parts.
- 21:52In my past, when I've taken antidepressants, the thing that I
- 21:55didn't like about them was that it, it takes out the peaks on both sides.
- 22:00It takes out the low peaks, like the low lows.
- 22:03It takes out the high highs.
- 22:05So you just kind of feel like, "Mm."
- 22:12So you sacrifice the peaks of emotion when you take antidepressants.
- 22:17And I'm not judging or anything about people who use antidepressants.
- 22:23I've known many people who've used them for years and are… But for
- 22:25me, it numbed things out too much.
- 22:27It leveled things out too much.
- 22:29Also, makes your penis not work at all, which apologies to my mom.
- 22:35Sorry about that
- 22:39Where was I?
- 22:41Oh, I know where I was.
- 22:43I was happy.
- 22:44I was happy in Mexico City.
- 22:46I was happy to be living here.
- 22:49I was comfortable with my place in the world, in this life
- 22:52right now, and I still am, so.
- 22:58Anyway, patreon.com/onefjef, please sign up.
- 23:02Support an independent podcast.
- 23:03Support this rambling what have you.
- 23:07I know I'm biased, but I think this is a really good podcast.
- 23:11I go back and listen to old episodes now and again when I'm just, when
- 23:14I'm feeling down about it, and I'm like, "This is good," in my head.
- 23:19I'm, "This is good. This is entertaining." Understand, I'm biased,
- 23:24but, like, if you're listening to this right now, realize that, like,
- 23:28now I'm raising the bar, but, you know, I'm putting work into this.
- 23:33I'm putting work into this.
- 23:34Is it for me or for you?
- 23:35That's the question.
- 23:37It's for both, really, 'cause I wouldn't still do this if
- 23:41not a single person listened.
- 23:44But if one person listened, if I just had one listener every week, I would
- 23:49really wanna know who that person is.
- 23:51Would I wanna know?
- 23:52I don't know.
- 23:53It would be my mom, so I already know who it would be
- 23:59I love you, Mom, of course, but I'm just saying that's who it would be.
- 24:02So then I would probably change the content and not put the part about
- 24:07the antidepressant penis thing in it.
- 24:11I would have cut that out.
- 24:12But there's more than one listener.
- 24:14There's multiples, multiples of one listener.
- 24:17There's two to three listeners.
- 24:19Can you figure out how many listeners there are?
- 24:20Because if you are listening right now and you're like, are there
- 24:23really two or three listeners?
- 24:25Am I one of these people?
- 24:26Then you feel special.
- 24:27So maybe there are just two or three listeners.
- 24:31And yet I'm still recording a podcast for two or three people
- 24:37patreon.com/onefjef.
- 24:38Thank you so much for your support, for your listening.
- 24:42Even if you don't subscribe to Patreon, thank you for listening
- 24:49Listen to that tamales playing.
- 24:50You guys want tamales?
- 24:53I gotta get one of these one of these days.
- 24:55Anyway, I'm glad to be back.
- 24:58I'm grateful for everybody who's listening again.
- 25:01I'll get these interviews moving along
- 25:06Is the tamales vending guy, um, like making it charming or annoying?
- 25:11That's the question.
- 25:13You can tell I'm really in Mexico.
- 25:14You hear that?
- 25:16Every night, this guy
- 25:21Try my mole, something
- 25:25Yeah.
- 25:26I wonder if they're good.
- 25:27I always wonder, are they good tamales?
- 25:30They must be.
- 25:32I'm not a big tamale fan, to be honest, but I mean, I don't
- 25:36hate them, but it's the texture.
- 25:38It's not my, not my jam, but I'll try one of those one of these
- 25:40days, those tamales from that guy.
- 25:43But I won't do that now.
- 25:44What I will do now is end this episode by saying thank you
- 25:49for listening, my friends.
- 25:51I appreciate you.
- 25:53I hope that you're doing well in whatever life you're living right now.
- 25:58I hope you're finding joy.
- 26:00I hope you're finding perspective.
- 26:03And I hope your heart is full of love, and I mean that in the
- 26:09least cheesy way possible, which is difficult, but here we are
- 26:17Please like, rate, subscribe, review.
- 26:19It does help the algorithmical gods to tell everybody what to listen to.

- 26:29review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
- 26:32Ideally, Apple Podcasts is where the reviews matter the most.

- 26:38Say, "I love it."
- 26:39And again, if you want to ask me some questions, anything
- 26:42at all, suggest podcast ideas, whatever, onefjefpod@gmail.com.
- 26:48And if you want to vent, scream at the podcast, or love on the
- 26:52podcast, say wonderful things, you can call the podcast at country code

- 27:091-669-241-5882.
- 27:18Call it up.
- 27:18Maybe I'll leave your voicemail message on the air.
- 27:21Play it.
- 27:22Maybe I will play your voicemail message on the air.
- 27:24I will probably, unless you tell me not to
- 27:33This is a last-minute outro of sorts that needs to be added because I was gonna
- 27:40have this episode out Wednesday morning.
- 27:43I'm not sure when it's gonna come out.
- 27:45The power went out on Tuesday night.
- 27:48It is out.
- 27:50That's not true.
- 27:50It was out.
- 27:51It's, it's not out now, but it was out.
- 27:54And so I couldn't, you know, I couldn't do, I couldn't do the internet
- 27:57things and the editing things 'cause my computer needed power to work.
- 28:04So I'd been told there's a lot of power outages in Mexico City.
- 28:10I have never experienced one until today, so I guess, I guess that's exciting.
- 28:17I don't exactly know why it went out 'cause there's no storm happening or
- 28:20anything, and it was only my block.
- 28:24I don't know.
- 28:24Very weird.
- 28:25Anyway, it did come back on, so that's good, but I'm not gonna
- 28:29have time to finish this right now.
- 28:30So I'll finish it as soon as possible.
- 28:33And you're listening to it now, so it did get out at some point.
- 28:36So yeah, don't worry about it.
- 28:38Don't overthink things.
- 28:40That's what I always say.
- 28:42Is that what I always say?
- 28:43It might be what I always say.
- 28:46I'm gonna end this episode with a, one of my favorite quotes by
- 28:50the late, great Kurt Vonnegut.
- 28:52And the first time I saw this quote was a guy that I knew or met in film
- 28:58school had a tattoo of this quote.
- 29:03Uh, and that guy has since passed away, actually, very tragically.
- 29:07He was a guy that everybody loved.
- 29:11He was just that guy that everybody knew and everybody really liked a lot.
- 29:15And he died quite young.
- 29:16I think he was in his 20s or 30s.
- 29:19And in fact, I think that I had invited him to my birthday party
- 29:22at a bar in Brooklyn, New York.
- 29:25This guy, Matt was his name.
- 29:27And he texted me, and he said he couldn't make it, and it was, I
- 29:31think, the next day or two days later that I got a call saying he died.
- 29:36Wow.
- 29:38Anyway, he had this quote, which is from Slaughterhouse-Five, tattooed on his arm,
- 29:45and it honestly seems more appropriate now than it did when he was alive, you know?
- 29:52"Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt."
- 29:58I'll see you next week.
- 29:59Very good, Jeffrey
