Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Where there's a why, there's a way, where there's a why,
- 0:28Speaker 1: there's a way. I know you've heard the saying before,
- 0:31Speaker 1: where there's a will, there's a way. But earlier this week,
- 0:35Speaker 1: as I was starting to put together the puzzle pieces
- 0:37Speaker 1: to make everything work out in my favor, make things
- 0:42Speaker 1: work out in a way that was best for Emily,
- 0:45Speaker 1: I was reminded of the importance of my Why you're
- 0:50Speaker 1: listening to five minute Friday, you're listening to Hurdle, and
- 0:53Speaker 1: I'm talking about the puzzle pieces being the training that
- 0:57Speaker 1: I want to get done in between long days, long hours, trips,
- 1:04Speaker 1: time zones, you name it. If you're listening to this
- 1:07Speaker 1: in real time, I'm likely in the middle of a
- 1:10Speaker 1: seventeen or eighteen mile long run that I decided needed
- 1:15Speaker 1: to happen on the Friday before I took to back
- 1:19Speaker 1: to back trips. Usually I do something like this on
- 1:22Speaker 1: Saturday or Sunday mornings, but being that I am set
- 1:26Speaker 1: to be out of my element and that I had
- 1:30Speaker 1: other work that needed to also get done of an
- 1:33Speaker 1: equal priority, that meant rearranging my schedule and doing something
- 1:38Speaker 1: a little less than desirable in favor of an ultimate
- 1:42Speaker 1: goal and I'm telling you about my choice to do
- 1:46Speaker 1: a run at five point thirty in the morning on
- 1:48Speaker 1: Friday before an eleven am flight, because that's what happens
- 1:53Speaker 1: when you have a strong why. We are now into February,
- 1:58Speaker 1: we're far past that day. I think it's January eleventh
- 2:01Speaker 1: that is Quitter's day. And one of the biggest errors
- 2:05Speaker 1: I hear from people when they talk to me about
- 2:08Speaker 1: the goals that they want to set is that they
- 2:12Speaker 1: are setting a goal based off of seeing something on
- 2:15Speaker 1: social media or because they feel like they should. In
- 2:19Speaker 1: other words, they don't have a strong why for the
- 2:22Speaker 1: goal that they are setting forward. For instance, you see
- 2:26Speaker 1: someone doing the seventy five Hard program on Instagram and
- 2:30Speaker 1: it looks jazzy and exciting and they suddenly have six
- 2:35Speaker 1: pack abs that they thought were never possible. Yeah, like, yes,
- 2:39Speaker 1: perhaps six pack abs are enticing. But if you have
- 2:44Speaker 1: no interest in the journey that is the seventy five Hard,
- 2:46Speaker 1: if that whole process isn't actually something that fits your
- 2:50Speaker 1: interests or your lifestyle, and you don't have a strong
- 2:53Speaker 1: why connected to executing it, then it will be miserable
- 2:58Speaker 1: for you period. Whereas if you have a strong why,
- 3:02Speaker 1: making choices that might otherwise seem difficult are going to
- 3:06Speaker 1: feel a little more doable. This run doesn't exactly excite me,
- 3:14Speaker 1: but I know that it's something that I want to do,
- 3:17Speaker 1: and so I make the time for it. So I'm
- 3:20Speaker 1: okay with the opportunity cost, knowing that it is getting
- 3:24Speaker 1: me closer to my ultimate goal. Where there's a why,
- 3:29Speaker 1: there's a way. So my prompt for you this week,
- 3:33Speaker 1: what are you after and what's your why? What is
- 3:37Speaker 1: one goal, one habit, one thing that you want to
- 3:41Speaker 1: do in your day to day or this week, this month,
- 3:44Speaker 1: this year, and what is your why for it? And
- 3:49Speaker 1: now a listener question.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Hey, Emily, I've noticed how zoned in you are on
- 3:54Speaker 2: your morning routine. I've actually really tried to emulate it
- 3:57Speaker 2: this year specifically, and it has me so to tuned
- 4:00Speaker 2: into how I start the rest of my day. It
- 4:02Speaker 2: had me wondering, do you have a bedtime routine? Is
- 4:05Speaker 2: there anything that you do at night? I'd be so
- 4:07Speaker 2: interested in it. Love your show, Thank you so much.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I am so flattered to hear that my morning routine
- 4:14Speaker 1: is inspiring you to to adapt and adopt one that
- 4:18Speaker 1: works for you. So that's excellent. And when it comes
- 4:22Speaker 1: to my nighttime routine, I would be remiss if I
- 4:24Speaker 1: try to insinuate that it is anywhere near as dialed
- 4:28Speaker 1: in as the one that I execute in the morning.
- 4:31Speaker 1: But roughly, this is how it goes down. If I'm
- 4:35Speaker 1: spending the evening at home, about an hour before I
- 4:38Speaker 1: want to go to bed, I start to wind down,
- 4:41Speaker 1: So for me, that means washing my face and doing
- 4:44Speaker 1: my skincare, and then I usually come back into the
- 4:48Speaker 1: living room where I spend another forty thirty ish minutes
- 4:53Speaker 1: just laying low. Maybe that's reading a book that could
- 4:55Speaker 1: be watching TV. I've yet to adopt a habit where
- 4:58Speaker 1: I completely nix certain types of light from my vicinity
- 5:03Speaker 1: before I crash, and only because I haven't seen that
- 5:08Speaker 1: it drastically impacts the way that I fall asleep at night.
- 5:12Speaker 1: So I am the type of human that can get
- 5:14Speaker 1: right into bed and within about five to seven minutes
- 5:17Speaker 1: I'm asleep. I'm a fast sleeper. If it's not the
- 5:20Speaker 1: same for you, then you may want to think about
- 5:22Speaker 1: what you're exposing yourself to in the time period leading
- 5:27Speaker 1: up to when you get into bed. But I'll watch
- 5:29Speaker 1: something on the couch roit a little bit. I'll likely
- 5:32Speaker 1: eat a small piece of dark chocolate. I'll brush my teeth.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I'll then go put my phone on its own little
- 5:40Speaker 1: bed aka one of those current phone charging pads. I
- 5:45Speaker 1: cannot reach that pad from my bedside, and then I
- 5:48Speaker 1: get into bed, and that's literally it. My nighttime routine
- 5:52Speaker 1: is super simple. It's worth highlighting that I go to
- 5:55Speaker 1: bed quite early most nights, by nine pm, which is
- 5:59Speaker 1: why I'm to get up so early naturally. And of note,
- 6:04Speaker 1: I am always on the hunt for listener questions and
- 6:06Speaker 1: I want to answer yours. So please send us a
- 6:10Speaker 1: voice recording over email at Hello at Hurdle dot us
