- 0:36Someone was like to me today, hey how's your weekend so often I was like, it feels like
- 0:39a Wednesday, okay?
- 0:40I worked all weekend.
- 0:41Yes, we worked all weekend, but worth it because guess what today is the Curve Classroom
- 0:48is live.
- 0:49The Curve Classroom is live.

- 0:53I have opened the doors so you can buy your seat, the Curve Classroom starts on the first

- 1:05the if to invest and you've been listening to our podcast for a while and you're thinking,
- 1:09you know what?
- 1:10It's time.
- 1:11I need to sort this out.
- 1:12Or if you're like, I love that kind of stuff so much, you just want to get more and more
- 1:15from them and you're desperate to learn.
- 1:18Right yourself, my friend, right yourself.
- 1:20No, but in all seriousness, there are podcasts that are exclusive to the Curve Classroom.
- 1:24So if you do it at the end of each learning module, we basically do a podcast wrap up of
- 1:29like, what do we learn?
- 1:30I ask a million questions as per.
- 1:32It's not like you.
- 1:35And yeah, it's a good old time.
- 1:37I must say I was doing the Curve Classroom.
- 1:39I invested $50,000.
- 1:40I had it just sitting in the bank like a hashtag.
- 1:45And it's so huge.
- 1:47So you know what, if this is you, the enrollment's open and we actually do have limited
- 1:51seats because it's too hard to do a good job for too many people.
- 1:55So we will put the link in our show notes if you would like to join.
- 2:00Hop to it.
- 2:01Now, talk to me.
- 2:02What is happening in the market?
- 2:04Talk to me.
- 2:05Talk to me.
- 2:06Talk to me.
- 2:07Well, I kind of got sick of saying every week.
- 2:08Oh, this week the market's up.
- 2:10Well, things have changed.
- 2:11Have they?
- 2:12Yeah.
- 2:13I shouldn't have said that.
- 2:15The market, so the US market, I finished down last week.
- 2:21The S&P 500, which is the main index, was down about 0.7% and the NASDAQ, which has
- 2:26got more of the tech companies, was down 1.3.
- 2:30But why?
- 2:31But why?
- 2:32But tell me why?
- 2:33Well, this is because we've got this earning season going on.
- 2:37Companies reporting their results.
- 2:39And there was a lot of tech results that came out the previous weeks when I last
- 2:43a group before and did really well.
- 2:46And now that's kind of, I guess, the shine has been taken off those names.
- 2:50But what do you mean?
- 2:51So basically, it went up because they got good results.
- 2:54Yeah.
- 2:55And now it's kind of leveled out again.
- 2:56Yeah, kind of the euphoria kind of fades, I guess.
- 2:59People get really up to most second and they're like, oh, actually, is this actually a
- 3:02really good result?
- 3:03And they're like, oh, New Zealand's getting absolutely flooded and all the stuff's
- 3:07happening in the world.
- 3:08Well, I don't think New Zealand really impacts the US stock market.
- 3:10No.
- 3:11Okay.
- 3:12But yes.
- 3:13I'm sure a month of these that I would start to be sounding a little bit more intelligent.
- 3:17But no, the New Zealand market was actually up last week.
- 3:20Where?
- 3:21I know.
- 3:22So they don't all move in unison.
- 3:23But the biggest, underperformer, the biggest, or the biggest weakest market, that's
- 3:27what I think.
- 3:28The worst market.
- 3:29Yeah, the worst market, yeah.
- 3:30Thank you.
- 3:31English, not my strong point, was the Australian market, which was down 1.6% for the week,
- 3:37which is so down worse than the NASDAQ, which is quite surprising.
- 3:40And this was all around interest rates.
- 3:42So they had their interest rate announcement where the Reserve Bank of Australia, which
- 3:46is the big...
- 3:47Hontro banks.
- 3:48Big Hontro bank.
- 3:49King Hontro.
- 3:50Oh, well, you are struggling today.
- 3:51Yeah.
- 3:52Sorry, yeah.
- 3:53Sort of out, man.
- 3:54Yeah.
- 3:55They have increased interest rates by 0.25% to 3.35%.
- 3:59Ooh.
- 4:00Is this what you spoke about recently when you said Australia hasn't hyped the interest
- 4:04rate as much as we have?
- 4:06So their inflation is actually worse.
- 4:07Yes.
- 4:08So it's been trying to curve it.
- 4:10Well, we had the worst inflation relative to Australia, the highest.
- 4:15And so we had to really ramp up our interest rates to control it.
- 4:18And Australia didn't really have to, because their inflation wasn't as bad, whereas now
- 4:24they...
- 4:25So they're increasing interest rates, but not at a greater rate as we are.
- 4:29So our official cash rate is at 4.25, and Australia is still at 3.35.
- 4:37And the official cash rate is the level of inflation?
- 4:40No, that's the interest rate.
- 4:42So what's the...
- 4:43What's the cash rate then?
- 4:44That's that.
- 4:45That's that.
- 4:46So that's the interest rate for the country effectively, and then the banks will add on
- 4:49a couple of percent.
- 4:50I'll talk about that.
- 4:51Are they interest rates?
- 4:52Yeah.
- 4:53Their official cash rate on the OCR.
- 4:54And so that's when the reserve bank sets that rate, and then all the banks kind of follow.
- 4:59So you'll see when that increases, mortgage rates tend to increase pretty rapidly up
- 5:04now.
- 5:05So Australia and stock market do well if they were increasing interest rates.
- 5:08It didn't.
- 5:09Oh.
- 5:10I see it was down one point.
- 5:12Someone else's in bed.
- 5:13It was sleep.
- 5:14Bit of sleep this morning.
- 5:15Oh, sorry.
- 5:16I thought you said Australia had done...
- 5:17The worst.
- 5:18Oh, okay.
- 5:19I have to admit it.
- 5:20Sorry.
- 5:21I thought you listened to what I say about that.
- 5:23Yes, no.
- 5:24The Australian market was the worst out of...
- 5:26Got it.
- 5:27And it's because of the OCR increase rate.
- 5:29Yes.
- 5:30Yeah.
- 5:31Because that effectively takes the wind out of the sales, really.
- 5:33Got it.
- 5:35So interest rates haven't been this high in Australia since 2012.
- 5:38And the highest level of eva head was in 1990, where the...
- 5:42The level wasn't even born.
- 5:44I was.
- 5:45But the official cash rate was at 17 and a half percent.
- 5:49Oh, that's terrible.
- 5:50So remember I told you this is 3.35 and imagine being 17.5.
- 5:55And then you have the banks adding a couple of percent on top of that.
- 5:57Well, sorry.
- 5:58Well, 17?
- 5:59The official cash rate.
- 6:00So their interest rates were like unbelievable.
- 6:02Unbelievable.
- 6:03Unbelievable.
- 6:04Was the world ending at that point?
- 6:06Why was it so bad?
- 6:07Was it the...
- 6:08No, but then property prices and stuff aren't as expensive.
- 6:11So you don't need those big mortgages.
- 6:13So all that kind of stuff comes into play.
- 6:14But it just goes to show like we were like,
- 6:16Whoa, you've increased from...
- 6:18It was 0.25% this time last year.
- 6:22And it's now 3.35%.
- 6:25And it's been 17 before, so that's all come down.
- 6:27Yeah, exactly.
- 6:28But we're still...
- 6:29We haven't really experienced interest rates this high,
- 6:31because they've been low for so long.
- 6:33So we're like, oh, 3.35%.
- 6:35Shit, shit.
- 6:36So it's more just to remember that this stuff happens constantly.
- 6:38But it was up and down.
- 6:40Yeah, cool.
- 6:41One really interesting result was lift.
- 6:42So lift shares last week, they found more than 30%.
- 6:46Now, lifts had a pretty tough time.
- 6:48So lift is the Uber one of them?
- 6:50Yeah, yeah.
- 6:51Should I say that?
- 6:52Another Uber type business.
- 6:54Yes, a ride sharing business.
- 6:55Do you use it?
- 6:56No.
- 6:56Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:57So there's shares have been down 7% year to date,
- 7:01which means, you know, in the first kind of six weeks of this year,
- 7:03whereas Uber's are up 35%, so there's quite a stark difference.
- 7:07And the issue price fell significantly
- 7:09because they've had to lower their prices due to competition.
- 7:12So they're kind of calling out, hey, look,
- 7:14Uber's eating our breakfast.
- 7:16Like, we need to lower prices to gain markets here.
- 7:18So they're kind of saying, you know, we're not
- 7:20in a very strong position, yeah, exactly.
- 7:24And the great thing with Uber is that they've really diversified.
- 7:27So they've kind of hit the nail on the head with it.
- 7:29They've now got food delivery, parcel delivery.
- 7:31It's going to say, because the other day,
- 7:33I felt my laptop charger at work.
- 7:34And that was like, we're just sendin' Uber.
- 7:36And I was like, I can't afford an Uber Victoria to go home and back again.
- 7:40She was like, no, just send it in a parcel.
- 7:42Yeah.
- 7:42You can go pick something up from your house.
- 7:44That's amazing.
- 7:45Quite amazing, yeah.
- 7:46So, but it just shows the different dynamic of like,
- 7:49your company's moving in different ways.
- 7:51And then another key bit of news was around Disney.
- 7:53Now, I've known spoken about this before,
- 7:54but there's a lot going on with Disney at the moment.
- 7:56They had their result out last week.
- 7:59And this is the first result.
- 8:00Remember, the CEO came back.
- 8:01Yes, yes.
- 8:02So this is his first result.
- 8:04Oh, I'm kind of excited for this.
- 8:05And the stock was at 8% after the result.
- 8:07So the market was like, woohoo.
- 8:09Is this name robbed?
- 8:10An original.
- 8:11Oh, boss.
- 8:12Got two out of three letters, right?
- 8:15Bob Iger, yes.
- 8:16And there was kind of three things from the result
- 8:18which I wanted to call out.
- 8:18And firstly was that they reinstated the dividend.
- 8:22So that means they cut the dividend during COVID
- 8:24because theme parks weren't open.
- 8:26They're struggling to get people in the door.
- 8:28And dividends for anyone that doesn't know just a quick one.
- 8:31It's basically when the company pays out
- 8:33a certain amount of their earnings
- 8:35to the people that are invested in that stock.
- 8:37Exactly.
- 8:38So when you're reinstating that, you're giving an indication
- 8:41to investors that you're really confident about the future.
- 8:43Because we've got enough cash.
- 8:44We can pay it out to investors.
- 8:45So reinstating the dividend, big green flag,
- 8:48if you ever see that in a result or in a news article.
- 8:51The second part is that Disney Plus lost about 2.4 million
- 8:56subscribers in the last three months of the year.
- 8:59Yeah.
- 8:59So this is the first decline since late 2019.
- 9:03But it still has more subscribers in Netflix.
- 9:07Does it?
- 9:08Yeah.
- 9:08So it's got 234 million subscribers versus Netflix at 230.
- 9:13But it also owns Hulu and a few others.
- 9:15But the Disney Plus family has got 234 million subscribers.
- 9:20Well, you know what?
- 9:21I was trying to find a movie the other day on Netflix.
- 9:23And the person I was hanging out was like,
- 9:25oh, there's not a lot going on Netflix anymore is there.
- 9:27And I thought, invest a hat.
- 9:29Invest a hat.
- 9:29Do I need to sell my Netflix shares?
- 9:32Yeah.
- 9:32And the other reason it did really well
- 9:34was that Disney cuts 7,000 jobs.
- 9:38So about 3.2% of its workforce.
- 9:40This is part of its strategy to reduce costs
- 9:42by about $6 billion.
- 9:44So less costs.
- 9:46And if you're revenue is growing,
- 9:48that just means more profits.
- 9:49So investors liked that.
- 9:51And that's why the stock was up.
- 9:53So the stock was up 8% after the result.
- 9:56So Disney.
- 9:57Yes.
- 9:59And that is the curve weekly for you this week.
- 10:03I'm so impressed and I just keep that to 10 minutes, by the way.
- 10:06Because honestly, we have struggled to shut up recently.
- 10:08I mean, I've got plenty more I can talk about if you want
- 10:11to keep listening.
- 10:12Is there any fun things?
- 10:13Any other real interesting stuff?
- 10:14Any of my apps is always fun, so key.
- 10:18OK, yeah, well, there is actually one more thing.
- 10:20Oh, what?
- 10:20Another little learning lesson.
- 10:22So remember, when you buy shares in a company,
- 10:25you become a part owner of that company.
- 10:28And so with Disney, there was a really large shareholder,
- 10:31the large chunk of shares.
- 10:33And because he had such a large chunk of shares,
- 10:36he actually asked for a board seat on the board.
- 10:39So when you own enough shares, you
- 10:41have a lot of voting rights as well with that.
- 10:43So you can say, hey, I want to set on the board
- 10:45because I want to bring a good change.
- 10:46Hold on, how much would you have to have enough company
- 10:48to even be there?
- 10:49So he had about $1 billion.
- 10:52So yeah, you've got to be pretty big time to have
- 10:56a board seat on a big company.
- 10:58But the person who it is is Nelson Peltz.
- 11:01And his daughter is Nicola Peltz, who's married to Brick
- 11:04on Beckham, just to bring it back to someone.
- 11:06This feels like a gossip magazine or something.
- 11:10So he, a few months ago, board a whole lot of stock,
- 11:13tried to get a board seat.
- 11:14And it's been nearly one month of fighting to the board
- 11:17seat because a lot of companies don't like it.
- 11:18Because you've got an outsider coming in being like,
- 11:20telling you what to do.
- 11:21I wouldn't want that with the camera.
- 11:22And so it's exactly.
- 11:24And so it can be a bit of a, you know,
- 11:26a lot of heat-butting and kind of not so much.
- 11:29Not so much.
- 11:30And so he has actually now withdrawn his bid for a board seat.
- 11:36But he still owns the stock.
- 11:38So we'll see what's going to happen, play out there.
- 11:41But if he was trying so hard, so I think the result came out
- 11:45and he was like, oh, you know what?
- 11:46They're actually doing, you know, they're doing OK
- 11:49or they've done what I expected.
- 11:51So therefore, I don't need a board seat.
- 11:52You could fight for a board seat.
- 11:54And then once you get on there, you've got pretty
- 11:57disgruntled people trying to work together.
- 11:58It can be actually really counter-intuitive.
- 12:00So there's lots of reasons.
- 12:01But he has actually withdrawn his bid for a seat on the board.
- 12:05So Bob has done a good job.
- 12:06He's basically happy with Bob.
- 12:07Yes.
- 12:08Well, TBC.
- 12:09But it seems like, yeah, things are heading
- 12:11in the right direction.
- 12:12Cool, that was a fun little update.
- 12:13He loves that.
- 12:15If anyone would like to make sure they do not miss out
- 12:18on the curved classroom, which is
- 12:19adding on the first of March, you know,
- 12:22head to either out Instagram bio
- 12:23or the show notes of this podcast.
- 12:26Hopefully.
- 12:27So you're there.
- 12:28Yeah, hopefully see you there.
- 12:29Do you know what, Vic?
- 12:31Do you know what I'm most excited about?
- 12:32The lives, getting everyone together
- 12:34and having big kind of like investing club meetings.
- 12:37Yeah, it's always fun.
- 12:38Yeah, just to see everyone chat makes a new friends.
- 12:40I'm excited about that one.
- 12:42So I've need two friends here.
- 12:43Oh, what a fucking bitch.
- 12:45Anyway, have a great week.
- 12:46Stay safe, stay dry.
- 12:48If you are in to make me a little bit of a cyclone going on.
- 12:52Yeah, hopefully you've escaped a few.
- 12:55We've been getting very wet, haven't we, Vic?
- 12:57Yes.
- 12:59OK, bye everyone.
- 13:01Bye.
