- 1:01Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Juicy Scoop.
- 1:03Speaker 5: I have comedian, fellow mother, grandmother, hilarious woman, Leanne Morgan.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Thank you for coming on the show.
- 1:12Speaker 4: I'm so tickled to be here.
- 1:15Speaker 5: I describe you as just everything you say is funny.
- 1:17Speaker 5: I don't know if it's just, where are you from?
- 1:19Speaker 5: What is this accent from?
- 1:21Speaker 4: I'm from a town of 500 people that grows dark
- 1:23Speaker 4: fire tobacco in middle Tennessee outside of Nashville on the
- 1:27Speaker 4: Kentucky-Tennessee border.
- 1:28Speaker 1: That was very specific.
- 1:29Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Can you tell me people ask me, I mean, can
- 1:33Speaker 4: you tell that people ask me that all the time?
- 1:35Speaker 1: So I get it down to, yeah.
- 1:37Speaker 5: So you are a very successful standup comedian and I
- 1:41Speaker 5: discovered you because you were showing up all over my
- 1:44Speaker 5: Facebook page a couple of years ago. And then I
- 1:47Speaker 5: was doing a show and this guy's like, Oh, I
- 1:50Speaker 5: use the same social media people that do Leanne Morgan.
- 1:54Speaker 5: I'm like, my God. So I paid these guys. I'm like,
- 1:57Speaker 5: Can you do what you did for Leigh-Anne Morgan?
- 2:00Speaker 1: And it did not work. It did not work. My
- 2:04Speaker 1: stand-up did not go at.
- 2:07Speaker 5: The only viral stand-up clip I have is when I
- 2:09Speaker 5: fainted on stage.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I don't have any... Thank God for the podcast.
- 2:13Speaker 5: And thank God for those that are juicy keepers that
- 2:15Speaker 5: come to see my show.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But I don't have these moments that you are.
- 2:21Speaker 5: It's just you're so funny, and I think it's just
- 2:23Speaker 5: so relatable. And every time you come across my thing, I, like,
- 2:25Speaker 5: sit and watch it.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Oh, you angel.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Thank you, my darling.
- 2:28Speaker 5: And my sister went to go see you in what
- 2:32Speaker 5: casino were you at in Palm Springs?
- 2:33Speaker 1: Morongo. Morongo. In Palm Springs? Yeah. She had a lot
- 2:38Speaker 1: of fun. She went with a bunch of girls.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Oh.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Well, let me say that, see, to me, you're one
- 2:43Speaker 4: of the cool kids in the cafeteria, and that means
- 2:46Speaker 4: so much to me. Because I've been doing comedy for
- 2:49Speaker 4: over 20 years. But I was living in Knoxville in
- 2:52Speaker 4: Texas and trying to do comedy and raise three children.
- 2:57Speaker 4: And I always knew who you were. And for you
- 3:00Speaker 4: to say that about me means the world to me. Because, see,
- 3:03Speaker 4: I see you, L.A., cool kid, cafeteria, you know everybody.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Everybody knows you. And I always wanted that. And I
- 3:11Speaker 4: begged their daddy to move to L.A. when they were babies.
- 3:15Speaker 4: I said, let's sell everything and I'll cook on a
- 3:16Speaker 4: hot plate. And he was like, what are you, crazy?
- 3:20Speaker 4: We need health insurance. And he's always been an executive
- 3:23Speaker 4: for a company. And anyway, so we didn't go.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Okay, let's talk about your life a little bit. Well,
- 3:28Speaker 5: I was born and raised here, so I had that advantage.
- 3:31Speaker 5: And when I started doing stand-up, everyone would say, well,
- 3:33Speaker 5: you can't start doing stand-up in L.A.
- 3:36Speaker 1: You've got to go somewhere.
- 3:37Speaker 5: Get your act down, and then try to be a stand-up.
- 3:42Speaker 5: And so I came home one day, and I told
- 3:44Speaker 5: my dad, I go, I think I'm going to move
- 3:45Speaker 5: to Florida. Because at the time they were doing some like,
- 3:48Speaker 5: I don't know, there was probably, there's always problems filming here.
- 3:50Speaker 5: That's why like people film in Atlanta and Canada and
- 3:53Speaker 5: everywhere else, but LA, I don't know why.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Anyway, who cares?
- 3:57Speaker 5: I'm not going to get political, but we don't, we
- 3:58Speaker 5: don't give anybody a tax break to film here. So
- 4:00Speaker 5: they go out to other places. And I was like,
- 4:03Speaker 5: they're doing some filming in Florida. I'm going to go
- 4:04Speaker 5: do that. And then I'll work on my standup and
- 4:06Speaker 5: then I'll come back. And my dad's like, What? That's
- 4:08Speaker 5: the dumbest thing I've ever heard. He's like, do you
- 4:10Speaker 5: even know how hard that is? And I'm like, no,
- 4:11Speaker 5: I guess I didn't realize that it is nice once.
- 4:15Speaker 5: That's the one thing.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Like I knew how to get to the locations of
- 4:18Speaker 1: the auditions and whatnot. And I had a home base here.
- 4:22Speaker 5: But you, so tell me a little bit about, I've
- 4:25Speaker 5: heard little bits and pieces of how you got started
- 4:27Speaker 5: in standup just growing up in this tiny town when
- 4:31Speaker 5: you weren't fighting off demons.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Did you know that? That you were like a naturally
- 4:35Speaker 1: funny person? Did you watch stand-ups growing up and think
- 4:38Speaker 1: one day I'd like to do that?
- 4:39Speaker 4: Yes, I did all of that. I loved... Well, I
- 4:42Speaker 4: loved all comedy, like Saturday Night Live, you know, Carol Burnett,
- 4:48Speaker 4: all that. My mom, you know, loved it too. Lucy
- 4:51Speaker 4: Arnaz and all that. And I just always wanted to
- 4:55Speaker 4: be in show business. And people thought I was funny.
- 4:58Speaker 4: And I could tell that I was funny.
- 5:01Speaker 5: And I was.
- 5:02Speaker 1: But I went to this little bitty.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Country school that was kindergarten through 12, 650 students. And
- 5:08Speaker 4: it was Big Future Farmers of America. And I took
- 5:10Speaker 4: home ec and learned how to make an omelet instead
- 5:14Speaker 4: of doing chemistry.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:16Speaker 4: And I was worried to death. I had my high
- 5:18Speaker 4: school boyfriend. And everybody, most people in my class got
- 5:22Speaker 4: married right out of high school and went with their
- 5:26Speaker 4: families farming.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:28Speaker 4: But I always knew in my heart that. I got
- 5:31Speaker 4: to get out of here. I loved where I was raised,
- 5:33Speaker 4: but I thought something big is going to happen to me.
- 5:36Speaker 1: I just knew it.
- 5:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 4: And I feel like even at like 10 years old,
- 5:40Speaker 4: I feel like God, you know, said to me, it's
- 5:44Speaker 4: something bigger. And then I got to thinking, am I crazy?
- 5:47Speaker 4: Am I like one of these American Idol kids that
- 5:49Speaker 4: think they can sing? Like I've just gone through that
- 5:51Speaker 4: kind of.
- 5:52Speaker 1: That, okay. That is so funny.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Okay.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I fell.
- 5:54Speaker 5: I remember being in my school, and, you know, of course,
- 5:57Speaker 5: they were going to do, like, the most likely to succeed, like,
- 6:01Speaker 5: eighth grade yearbook, whatever. And, of course, like, the smartest
- 6:06Speaker 5: girl got it or whatever. And I remember thinking, I'm
- 6:09Speaker 5: not going to get it, but I am going to be. Like,
- 6:12Speaker 5: I kind of was just, like, knew it like it's something.
- 6:14Speaker 5: And I don't even think that I am in that class.
- 6:16Speaker 5: I don't know if I'd be considered. I don't know
- 6:18Speaker 5: what considered success, whatever.
- 6:19Speaker 1: But I was always, like, you know, like, there was
- 6:23Speaker 1: something– it's interesting.
- 6:26Speaker 5: A lot of people say that like when they kind
- 6:28Speaker 5: of knew it and it's almost like, Oh, I don't
- 6:30Speaker 5: want to be boastful.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I don't want to say it out loud. I don't
- 6:32Speaker 1: want to, you know, that kind of a thing.
- 6:34Speaker 5: But then when it happens, you're like, well, I did
- 6:36Speaker 5: always kind of manifest it or know it or know
- 6:40Speaker 5: I had a gift.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Um, type of thing.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Yeah. And so, so then, so did you marry the
- 6:48Speaker 1: high school sweetheart?
- 6:49Speaker 4: I did not, but I followed him to the university
- 6:51Speaker 4: of Tennessee.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:52Speaker 4: And, He broke up with me in about three weeks
- 6:55Speaker 4: after we were there because he was, you know, drunk
- 6:57Speaker 4: in a fraternity party. And I was coming off of
- 7:00Speaker 4: the Adams United Methodist Youth Fellowship. And I nagged him
- 7:05Speaker 4: because I was like, what is this Sodom and Gomorrah?
- 7:08Speaker 1: And he broke up with me.
- 7:10Speaker 4: And then I grieved and sat in my dorm room
- 7:13Speaker 4: and watched TV and cried over Marina Dongchil commercials. You know,
- 7:18Speaker 4: I was a wreck. And then I got out and
- 7:20Speaker 4: started clubbing and, you know, went through horrible sin, did
- 7:24Speaker 4: horrible things, made horrible decisions.
- 7:26Speaker 1: In the 80s. Did you bone a lot? And I'm
- 7:28Speaker 1: saying that in front of my children. Did you bone
- 7:29Speaker 1: a lot of guys?
- 7:30Speaker 5: No.
- 7:31Speaker 4: No, but I made out. I made out with a
- 7:33Speaker 4: lot of people, and I let them treat me terrible.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Did you dry hump?
- 7:38Speaker 4: Probably. I should say that. Are you going to let
- 7:41Speaker 4: people know? My children are in here. They're grown women, but, yeah, I...
- 7:48Speaker 4: And I think, and I really messed with people's hands. Like,
- 7:51Speaker 4: I really tried to torment men.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I did. I mean, I was, you know, I knew
- 7:56Speaker 1: I had power over them. Well, you know, my book
- 7:59Speaker 1: is called You'll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again. Oh,
- 8:01Speaker 1: I remember when your book came out. Yeah, because I
- 8:03Speaker 1: was a big dry humper. I was an old virgin
- 8:06Speaker 1: big dry humper.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Were you? Yes.
- 8:11Speaker 1: And I, these guys all say, I dress slutty. I drink.
- 8:16Speaker 5: They all thought they were going to get laid. And
- 8:20Speaker 5: then by the third date, never heard from them again.
- 8:23Speaker 5: But I got some nice meals.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Oh, my bad. Yeah.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Well, and I was going to say, you being raised here,
- 8:31Speaker 4: I know that you were saying, oh, you got to
- 8:35Speaker 4: go and do comedy and get your act somewhere else.
- 8:37Speaker 4: But it was, I think, being raised here, it's probably
- 8:40Speaker 4: what kept your weight down. I mean, you've got a
- 8:43Speaker 4: beautiful body. And I've been watching you in your combo
- 8:47Speaker 4: pictures and your bikini. Because you've had how many children?
- 8:51Speaker 1: Two. Lord.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Nobody looks like that in a bathing suit. Well, maybe
- 8:55Speaker 4: these L.A.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Girls. Well, you asked if I was athletic, and I
- 9:00Speaker 5: am not. So I was always last picked on the team.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Did you do ballet? You look like a dancer. Your legs.
- 9:07Speaker 5: No, I just kind of like, I like to dance.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Like, I like to have fun dancing.
- 9:13Speaker 5: And I do like stay fit and I do Pilates
- 9:17Speaker 5: and stuff now.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Pilates? Yes.
- 9:19Speaker 5: And I'm just, you know, but I've been lucky to like,
- 9:23Speaker 5: you know, just kind of have like good genes or whatever.
- 9:25Speaker 1: And I just try. Just try. Yeah. I try to
- 9:28Speaker 1: be cute. You know, I like it. I like it.
- 9:31Speaker 4: But you aren't cute. Thank you.
- 9:33Speaker 2: So cute.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Thank you. So, okay.
- 9:35Speaker 5: So you are blue balling men and you're drinking and smoking.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Smoked cigarettes.
- 9:42Speaker 4: I wasn't a big drinker, but I smoked cigarettes and
- 9:45Speaker 4: drank coffee and Diet Coke and tried to torment people.
- 9:51Speaker 5: And, okay, so then what happened? Then when did you
- 9:56Speaker 5: get married?
- 9:57Speaker 1: Yes. Oh, well, I might as well tell you everything.
- 9:59Speaker 1: All right, so.
- 10:00Speaker 4: I married I married the first time at 21 oh
- 10:03Speaker 4: you had a starter marriage I had a starter and
- 10:06Speaker 4: I and I said this to Little Tony Horton while
- 10:11Speaker 4: we were exercising. I was out of breath. Okay. So
- 10:14Speaker 4: I think when I went to UT, I think I
- 10:16Speaker 4: always wanted to be in Hollywood.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:19Speaker 4: I always thought this is crazy. I don't, okay, I'll
- 10:21Speaker 4: go to college, whatever, but I'm going to be a star.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:25Speaker 4: You know, but my family, you know, they were like,
- 10:27Speaker 4: you need to either go to college or in the military.
- 10:30Speaker 4: And I was like, what?
- 10:30Speaker 1: I can't make it in the military.
- 10:32Speaker 4: And I just, I didn't have the guts to come
- 10:34Speaker 4: out here.
- 10:35Speaker 5: I always told my dad, if they ever draft women,
- 10:37Speaker 5: I'll just get pregnant. That's how much I didn't want
- 10:40Speaker 5: to go to the military.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Oh, Lord, I could not make it. Yeah, so go on. So,
- 10:46Speaker 4: and I was, you know, I had these, all of
- 10:48Speaker 4: my friends were getting married right out of high school.
- 10:50Speaker 4: But anyway, I went to college, and then my high
- 10:52Speaker 4: school boyfriend and I broke up. And I think I
- 10:54Speaker 4: was just, I was taking classes, but I wasn't doing well.
- 10:58Speaker 4: I was flailing around in college. And I really think
- 11:01Speaker 4: that I married this man to.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Because I didn't know what else to do.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Because I was lost and I didn't know what else
- 11:08Speaker 4: to do.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Did you know walking down the aisle that you shouldn't
- 11:10Speaker 1: marry him?
- 11:11Speaker 4: I knew it was a terrible mistake.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Did you have a big wedding?
- 11:13Speaker 4: It was big for little Adams. It was in my
- 11:17Speaker 4: church and there was mints and nuts afterwards. But it
- 11:20Speaker 4: wasn't that big. No, it wasn't like now how big
- 11:23Speaker 4: my son had. But in my mind, back then at 21,
- 11:27Speaker 4: I thought, oh, my mom and dad have paid for
- 11:29Speaker 4: all this and the dress and all that. But I
- 11:31Speaker 4: knew it was a horrible mistake. And he was a beautiful,
- 11:36Speaker 4: talented somebody, but he was very mentally ill.
- 11:39Speaker 1: And you know, back then.
- 11:41Speaker 4: How was he? Bipolar, and he took his own life
- 11:45Speaker 4: about probably five years ago.
- 11:47Speaker 1: And had a beautiful family. So how long were you married?
- 11:50Speaker 4: I was only married to him for about two and
- 11:51Speaker 4: a half, three years. And I left in the middle
- 11:54Speaker 4: of the night because he was... mean but you know
- 11:57Speaker 4: I look back on it and I didn't I didn't
- 11:59Speaker 4: know what bipolar was right you know back then I
- 12:02Speaker 4: just thought he's crazy he's mean and all that but
- 12:04Speaker 4: anyway I left and I went back to school and
- 12:08Speaker 4: got my degree and I met their daddy while we
- 12:12Speaker 4: were waiting tables he was getting an MBA okay and
- 12:15Speaker 4: I was I was finishing up this undergraduate it took
- 12:18Speaker 4: me years because I'm so unorganized anyway The whole time,
- 12:25Speaker 4: all of this happening, thinking, I'm going to make it
- 12:27Speaker 4: in show business.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I don't know where. I don't know how. But you're not.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I'm not doing anything.
- 12:33Speaker 5: But are you thinking it's stand-up, or are you thinking
- 12:34Speaker 5: you should be a star in a sitcom, or are
- 12:36Speaker 5: you trying to do a play?
- 12:37Speaker 4: Sitcom, sitcom comedy, stand-up. But I really, I mean, I've
- 12:43Speaker 4: watched Jay Leno, everybody on Johnny Carson, Roseanne, when she
- 12:48Speaker 4: debuted on.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Johnny Carson. And it blew me away.
- 12:51Speaker 5: The fact that you were doing this and you weren't
- 12:53Speaker 5: pursuing that, was that difficult for you? Like, you're like,
- 12:57Speaker 5: I got a gift from God and I'm not using it. Like,
- 12:59Speaker 5: when am I going to have the balls to start
- 13:01Speaker 5: to do something with this?
- 13:02Speaker 1: Was that like torturing at all?
- 13:03Speaker 4: It wasn't gnawing at me. It really wasn't because I
- 13:06Speaker 4: knew I wanted to be a mama more than anything.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:09Speaker 4: I wanted to be a mama and I wanted babies.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:13Speaker 4: And so, but I was still kind of flailing around. Anyway,
- 13:17Speaker 4: my husband and I, met, and then he moved me to,
- 13:21Speaker 4: this is, I know God had his hand on me
- 13:24Speaker 4: the whole time. All right. So my husband had never
- 13:28Speaker 4: stepped foot in a mobile home, went and played golf
- 13:31Speaker 4: with his daddy and a little crusty man named Fran
- 13:34Speaker 4: that had a refurbishing business, refurbished, used mobile homes, glamorous,
- 13:41Speaker 4: and then resold them to people like on a car lot. Okay. Well,
- 13:44Speaker 4: my husband had This little old man said, I'm going
- 13:47Speaker 4: to retire. This has been very lucrative. I'm going to
- 13:50Speaker 4: sell this business. My husband bought that business. Now, we
- 13:53Speaker 4: weren't married yet. He moved on to Bean Station, Tennessee,
- 13:56Speaker 4: which is in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. We
- 14:00Speaker 4: got married. Moved me up there. I got pregnant with
- 14:03Speaker 4: my first baby, Charlie, who's now 29.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Isn't the Appalachians like where people have like.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Heather, isn't it?
- 14:13Speaker 1: Like, are there documentaries about.
- 14:15Speaker 5: People that they, like, marry their brother and they, like,
- 14:19Speaker 5: they have, like, weird ailments because they marry their brother
- 14:22Speaker 5: and they have, like, teeth?
- 14:23Speaker 4: Like Deliverance, remember, with Bo Reynolds. Okay, so the Appalachians
- 14:27Speaker 4: go from Georgia to Maine. And I don't think people
- 14:29Speaker 4: realize that. So there are some, a stretch of the
- 14:33Speaker 4: Appalachians where people really and truly don't know who the
- 14:36Speaker 4: president is. It is so.
- 14:39Speaker 4: You know, and those sweet people, like opioids, when you see,
- 14:43Speaker 4: did you ever see? The dope sick? Dope sick. We're
- 14:47Speaker 4: talking about, like, you know, the southeastern Kentucky, all up
- 14:50Speaker 4: in there.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:51Speaker 4: So, this was in Bean Station, which is very pretty, lakes, mountains, beautiful,
- 14:57Speaker 4: but rural. Yeah. And I'm from rural, but not that rural.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Like, my people know who the president is.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Anyway, he moves me up there, and I'm thinking, oh,
- 15:06Speaker 4: my Lord, what has happened? Okay, so I have my
- 15:09Speaker 4: first baby, Charlie.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Who, you know, when you have your first baby, and
- 15:13Speaker 4: I nursed him, and I mean, I thought, I don't
- 15:15Speaker 4: need anybody else. I've got this precious baby. And I
- 15:19Speaker 4: told my husband, I go, I don't, if I don't
- 15:22Speaker 4: want to put him in daycare, I don't want to work,
- 15:24Speaker 4: I'll do without. I just want this baby. And then,
- 15:28Speaker 4: of course, I needed my hair highlighted. And we had
- 15:31Speaker 4: this small business, and we were young. I mean, like 27,
- 15:33Speaker 4: you know, 28. And so I wanted to make a little,
- 15:37Speaker 4: I've always had a side hustle. I've always had some
- 15:39Speaker 4: way to make money. So my friend in Nashville said,
- 15:43Speaker 4: I'm selling this jewelry like women sell Mary Kay Tupperware.
- 15:48Speaker 4: And she said, you ought to do it, Lynn. You
- 15:50Speaker 4: can meet people. You can make a little money. Chuck
- 15:52Speaker 4: can take care of the baby while you're having these parties.
- 15:56Speaker 4: And I don't even care about jewelry. I really don't.
- 15:59Speaker 4: And it's just bizarre to me that I even did it.
- 16:03Speaker 4: And I started doing these jewelry parties in women's houses.
- 16:08Speaker 4: And I was supposed to be talking about jewelry and how, like,
- 16:10Speaker 4: a clip-on can change the look of a pump. Yeah.
- 16:14Speaker 1: And instead, I talked about... Oh, clip it on your shoe? Yeah.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:18Speaker 1: And it was very.
- 16:20Speaker 4: They didn't call it costume, but it was, you know,
- 16:22Speaker 4: like 1999 for a period.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Okay, so... Instead, I was talking about breastfeeding and hemorrhoids
- 16:29Speaker 4: and resenting Chuck because he didn't hear the baby.
- 16:31Speaker 1: In the night.
- 16:32Speaker 4: And I developed a shtick. Yeah. And I look back
- 16:36Speaker 4: on it and I think there was no comedy clubs,
- 16:38Speaker 4: but I had... It was like my own little comedy
- 16:40Speaker 4: club with my demographic every night.
- 16:42Speaker 6: Right.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Women that were going through the same thing I was
- 16:46Speaker 4: going through. And... I started booking a year in advance
- 16:50Speaker 4: because people would say, she's funny. You need to have
- 16:52Speaker 4: a jewelry party with her.
- 16:53Speaker 1: It's so fun. Would they at least buy some jewelry
- 16:55Speaker 1: from you?
- 16:55Speaker 4: Oh, I sold a buttload of jewelry. And we ate
- 16:58Speaker 4: dip and brownies and we had a ball.
- 17:00Speaker 1: And people had fun. Now, did you have people under
- 17:02Speaker 1: you selling the jewelry? Yes, then I had women. And
- 17:05Speaker 1: I was not a good leader.
- 17:06Speaker 4: I was not a good leader.
- 17:07Speaker 1: So then you were part of the pyramid system. Yeah,
- 17:09Speaker 1: kind of like Lulu Roe. Yeah.
- 17:12Speaker 4: But it wasn't twisted. It really wasn't. It was sweet.
- 17:15Speaker 1: It was sweet people.
- 17:16Speaker 4: It was a Christian company out of Dallas, and it was.
- 17:18Speaker 1: A little old dominant man. Aren't they all Christian companies?
- 17:20Speaker 1: But that's good.
- 17:22Speaker 4: But they were sweet, and it gave me something to do,
- 17:25Speaker 4: and I felt good about it.
- 17:27Speaker 1: So how long did you do that for?
- 17:31Speaker 4: Until I got pregnant with my third baby, and I thought,
- 17:34Speaker 4: I can't be schlepping all this jewelry around.
- 17:35Speaker 5: Okay.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Because it was getting too hard then.
- 17:38Speaker 1: But I did it.
- 17:38Speaker 4: While I was pregnant with my second one, because I
- 17:40Speaker 4: remember breastfeeding her in the toilet at Opryland Hotel in
- 17:45Speaker 4: Nashville and then handing her over to my mama.
- 17:48Speaker 1: So that I could go on stage.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Because what happened was I started booking so far in
- 17:53Speaker 4: advance that the company asked me to start speaking at
- 17:55Speaker 4: their big things.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Oh, right.
- 17:57Speaker 4: So then I would do these big things and women
- 17:59Speaker 4: would come up to me and there would be three.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Now, would they pay you? Would they pay you extra?
- 18:04Speaker 4: No, they would just say, can you talk about how
- 18:06Speaker 4: you get booked so far in advance?
- 18:08Speaker 1: And then I'd get up there and talk about breastfeeding
- 18:10Speaker 1: and hemorrhoids.
- 18:11Speaker 4: And women would say, you need to be a stand-up.
- 18:13Speaker 4: You're so funny. And that gave me the strength and
- 18:18Speaker 4: the courage. But I can remember in my twisted mind,
- 18:22Speaker 4: while I'd be doing these jewelry parties, I would say
- 18:24Speaker 4: to these women in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains,
- 18:28Speaker 4: you can book a party with me now or you
- 18:30Speaker 4: can see me in Las Vegas later. Because I knew
- 18:33Speaker 4: in my head, I'm going to be in Las Vegas.
- 18:36Speaker 4: I'm going to be on TV.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:38Speaker 4: I remember thinking that, which how crazy is that?
- 18:43Speaker 1: It's believing in yourself.
- 18:44Speaker 5: It's not bad, but I always talk about the secret,
- 18:47Speaker 5: you know, about the secret and manifesting things. And I
- 18:49Speaker 5: just kind of discovered that, you know, shortly after like
- 18:53Speaker 5: Oprah featured the people and you saw that weird video that,
- 18:56Speaker 5: you know, everyone was talking about the secrets. And I
- 18:59Speaker 5: then realized, ooh, I would do that. I used to
- 19:02Speaker 5: do stuff like that without even knowing. And I never
- 19:04Speaker 5: made the board. I never did the board. I would
- 19:06Speaker 5: just kind of say it or sometimes I wouldn't say
- 19:09Speaker 5: it out loud. I'd just say it in my.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Head or whatever.
- 19:11Speaker 5: And yeah, it's so true. So I don't think that's
- 19:14Speaker 5: a bad thing. I mean, I think in our generation,
- 19:17Speaker 5: at least with me, people were so mean if they
- 19:22Speaker 5: thought someone was conceited.
- 19:24Speaker 1: So it's like, oh, she thinks she can be a model.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Like people are really mean.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Totally different because now every kid is glamming themselves.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Every kid's conceited.
- 19:33Speaker 5: Every kid has their own TikTok, their own, and they're
- 19:36Speaker 5: taking their own selfies. But in our day, that was like,
- 19:40Speaker 5: that was bad to think so highly of yourself.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Don't you think?
- 19:44Speaker 1: Yeah. You're right. Yeah.
- 19:46Speaker 6: Christmas shopping has already started in our house. My daughter...
- 19:50Speaker 6: is so organised, already planning Christmas gifts from Macaulay. Hair
- 19:54Speaker 6: care for her aunt and a fab fragrance for her bestie.
- 19:57Speaker 1: But the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
- 19:59Speaker 6: I'm an early bird, buying one present a week from
- 20:01Speaker 6: now till Christmas, which makes budgeting less stressful. I can
- 20:04Speaker 6: buy in-store or online from Macaulay.ie for home delivery or
- 20:08Speaker 6: free click and collect.
- 20:10Speaker 1: So easy.
- 20:11Speaker 6: Gifts they'll cherish at prices you'll love.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I'm Darman, and this is What Happens Next. Each week
- 20:19Speaker 2: on the show, I sit down with extraordinary people who
- 20:22Speaker 2: have faced tremendous setbacks and yet somehow have found a
- 20:27Speaker 2: way to turn them into their greatest strengths.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Life is one long lesson of chaos. I'm heading to
- 20:33Speaker 4: the Emmys, and I have police complaints filed against me.
- 20:36Speaker 1: When your free will was about to be taken from you,
- 20:38Speaker 1: what would you do if it was given back?
- 20:41Speaker 2: Where did that need come from where you thought that
- 20:43Speaker 2: you had to succeed in order to feel loved?
- 20:46Speaker 1: He said, I have a work dad.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I need a home dad.
- 20:48Speaker 1: What happens next?
- 20:49Speaker 5: When I came in, he started crying.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Everybody in life encounters hardships. What defines them is not
- 20:55Speaker 2: those hard moments that they go through. It's about what
- 20:58Speaker 2: happens next.
- 20:59Speaker 1: I decided to risk it all. I realized how valuable
- 21:02Speaker 1: every day was.
- 21:02Speaker 4: You're worth the work.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Listen, Dara, I'm not going to pull punches. You can
- 21:06Speaker 1: use your voice even if it's shaped.
- 21:08Speaker 2: The stories are different, but the impact is the same.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Only one question matters. What happens next?
- 21:22Speaker 4: I didn't even think about that.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:25Speaker 4: But I remember coming before Chuck and I married. We
- 21:29Speaker 4: came out here to see my sister. She lived in
- 21:31Speaker 4: Huntington Beach. Oh, that's nice. And worked for a company.
- 21:34Speaker 4: And I remember saying to him, I want to go
- 21:36Speaker 4: to the comedy store and I want to watch comedians
- 21:40Speaker 4: because I just loved them. And I saw Dom Herrera
- 21:44Speaker 4: and Paul Mooney. Con Sunset? Uh-huh. Okay.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 21:47Speaker 4: And I remember my heart beating out of my body,
- 21:49Speaker 4: standing in line. And it was like a physical thing,
- 21:53Speaker 4: like I'm supposed to be doing this. And I remember
- 21:55Speaker 4: watching them and thinking, I can do this, I can
- 21:58Speaker 4: do this. And what year was this? That would have
- 22:01Speaker 4: been in like 91, 92.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Oh, so then you had all the babies, you did
- 22:06Speaker 1: the selling the jewelry.
- 22:07Speaker 4: Jewelry and all that.
- 22:08Speaker 5: So then when was the first time you actually went
- 22:10Speaker 5: on a club after you established the act selling the jewelry?
- 22:13Speaker 4: Okay, I was, I had... My baby child was 18
- 22:18Speaker 4: months old and I called Zany's in Nashville and asked
- 22:21Speaker 4: Brian Dorfman, who is now my concert promoter.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Nice.
- 22:27Speaker 4: And she was 18 months old. She just turned 25.
- 22:30Speaker 4: So I said to him, I know you don't know me,
- 22:32Speaker 4: but because by then I'd quit selling jewelry and I
- 22:35Speaker 4: was like the person in Morristown, Tennessee. That would do
- 22:40Speaker 4: like the rotary. Like if you needed somebody to come
- 22:43Speaker 4: and do 20 minutes and I dropped my babies off
- 22:45Speaker 4: at preschool and I called myself a comedian, even though
- 22:49Speaker 4: I'd never been on. So then I asked him, can
- 22:51Speaker 4: I come and open? I opened for Billy Gardell.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:54Speaker 4: And I did 10 minutes and I'm sure I sucked.
- 22:57Speaker 4: But anyway, I went back and he took me back
- 23:00Speaker 4: in the office and he said, what do you want
- 23:01Speaker 4: to do? And he goes, because I think you've got something.
- 23:05Speaker 4: And I said, oh, I'm going to make it, and
- 23:07Speaker 4: I'm going to be a sitcom star, and I'm going
- 23:08Speaker 4: to do– you know, I'm going to make it. And
- 23:10Speaker 4: he said, Lian, there's no way you can go out
- 23:14Speaker 4: here and do these clubs and raise these three children.
- 23:17Speaker 4: He said that you cannot do it. Roseanne– he said
- 23:20Speaker 4: this to me. He goes, Roseanne raised hers in a
- 23:23Speaker 4: station wagon in the parking lot, and it didn't turn
- 23:25Speaker 4: out well. Now, I don't know what happened with her.
- 23:28Speaker 4: I don't know. But I remember him saying that to me,
- 23:31Speaker 4: and I remember getting– angry and thinking you're not going
- 23:34Speaker 4: to tell me what to do I can too make
- 23:35Speaker 4: it and he and I've talked about it several times
- 23:38Speaker 4: I go you know you were right like I couldn't
- 23:40Speaker 4: have raised them to be who they are today if
- 23:45Speaker 4: I had have gone on the road and just not
- 23:48Speaker 4: like I know people who've done it women it's not
- 23:50Speaker 4: many you know because it's so hard.
- 23:52Speaker 5: It's really not and you know um kind of when
- 23:56Speaker 5: I was like you know trying to get more people
- 23:59Speaker 5: like interested in my stand-up I was like, honestly, besides you,
- 24:05Speaker 5: I go, there's no other female comic who's currently married
- 24:10Speaker 5: who is raising kids that are not babies. Like there's
- 24:15Speaker 5: Ali Wong and there's, you know, a bunch that have
- 24:17Speaker 5: little kids, Amy Schumer and that are doing it. But
- 24:21Speaker 5: I'm like, there's nobody that's like doing it now. And
- 24:25Speaker 5: I go, and I think that's like what makes it
- 24:27Speaker 5: unique that I was lucky enough too, in that I
- 24:31Speaker 5: wasn't on the road.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Leaving my kid.
- 24:33Speaker 5: Like I was able to establish my comedy in other
- 24:36Speaker 5: ways by being on TV shows and writing books and,
- 24:39Speaker 5: and all of that. So I would leave for the
- 24:42Speaker 5: weekend when my kids were school age and I'd leave
- 24:45Speaker 5: my kids with my husband, but I was not gone
- 24:47Speaker 5: for weeks on end making $ 10 to try to get
- 24:53Speaker 5: that act. And that's where, depending on the kind of,
- 24:57Speaker 5: you know, parent you're comfortable being with as a woman,
- 25:00Speaker 5: That is why you see less women doing it, because
- 25:04Speaker 5: essentially there's all different ways to make it, especially today.
- 25:08Speaker 5: I don't think there's that the strict way that people
- 25:10Speaker 5: say that you have to do every night. You got
- 25:12Speaker 5: to go up five times. I don't really believe that
- 25:13Speaker 5: you did it differently. I did it differently and we're
- 25:16Speaker 5: both successful. So I don't think you have to do it. But,
- 25:20Speaker 5: you know, it's but a guy, most men are very
- 25:23Speaker 5: happy to leave their toddler for four nights.
- 25:26Speaker 1: And go on the road.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:27Speaker 1: And I've got a wife at home that's got groceries.
- 25:29Speaker 1: And nobody says anything about him because he's providing.
- 25:33Speaker 5: But the woman, it's, you know, even my mom said
- 25:36Speaker 5: to my friends, you know, she's never with those kids.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I love my mom, rest in peace. But she did
- 25:40Speaker 1: tell my friend that.
- 25:41Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 25:42Speaker 1: She did. Well. I mean, I forgive her. But I
- 25:52Speaker 1: was like.
- 25:55Speaker 5: You know, and she always praised my husband, you know,
- 25:57Speaker 5: that he was like, but he was having a great
- 26:00Speaker 5: life being not working full time. He didn't have the
- 26:03Speaker 5: stress of it. It worked out between us. Nobody was suffering.
- 26:06Speaker 5: Everybody got to do what they want to do. But
- 26:08Speaker 5: people are very weird and critical of it. You know,
- 26:12Speaker 5: it's like at a certain point, I remember saying like
- 26:15Speaker 5: at Chelsea lately, like when everyone was like giving me
- 26:18Speaker 5: make kind of kind of like making fun that my
- 26:21Speaker 5: husband was the stay at home dad. And I was like,
- 26:25Speaker 5: I wanted so badly to be like, so to the men,
- 26:29Speaker 5: so your wives are losers.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Like, I mean, are you kidding me? Or would it.
- 26:35Speaker 5: Be better if he was a traveling attorney and we
- 26:38Speaker 5: just had a nanny that didn't give a shit about
- 26:40Speaker 5: our kids?
- 26:40Speaker 1: Would, would that make us better?
- 26:44Speaker 5: Like, it's like people are, You know, and that's why
- 26:48Speaker 5: he said that, you know, like I think he was like, oh,
- 26:50Speaker 5: you're so talented.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Too bad you have children to raise. Yeah.
- 26:54Speaker 4: And he and we've talked about it lately. I mean,
- 26:57Speaker 4: Brian and I are very close. And and I said,
- 27:00Speaker 4: you know, I just need it motivated me to find
- 27:02Speaker 4: another way. I just had to find another way.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:06Speaker 4: And but we moved to Texas right after that.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:09Speaker 4: My husband went to work, sold that company, that business
- 27:12Speaker 4: and went to work for a large mobile home company.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:15Speaker 4: And he was over South Texas. And so I moved
- 27:17Speaker 4: to San Antonio, which was not really a comedy town. Yeah.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I've performed in San Antonio too. LOL.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Which was fun. That's darling. Yeah.
- 27:28Speaker 4: But when I moved there, it was at the mall.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah. River. Yeah. I remember that. Something.
- 27:33Speaker 4: Yeah. And I did an open mic for the first time.
- 27:36Speaker 4: It scared me to death. And the manager came up.
- 27:40Speaker 4: God love him, but he had like managed a Fridays,
- 27:42Speaker 4: a TGI Fridays. And he was like, don't do any
- 27:44Speaker 4: crowd work or don't do any. And I remember thinking, oh,
- 27:47Speaker 4: they know what they're talking about. They really did. But anyway,
- 27:50Speaker 4: I was, that club I went and I did late night.
- 27:54Speaker 4: I'd get up on stage at midnight. I had little
- 27:57Speaker 4: children that got up at six in the morning and
- 27:59Speaker 4: I would be, you know, everybody be high on marijuana
- 28:02Speaker 4: and I'd be talking about doo-doo on the tee ball field.
- 28:06Speaker 4: But I was different. And I think, and I stood out.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Because all these male comics all did Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonations.
- 28:15Speaker 4: And I was just different from everybody. And so I
- 28:18Speaker 4: would get things that other people didn't get. And then,
- 28:20Speaker 4: I mean, like, you know, I'd get invited to a
- 28:23Speaker 4: festival or something. So then I started driving back and
- 28:25Speaker 4: forth to Cap City Comedy Club in Austin. And Margie
- 28:29Speaker 4: Cole ran it. And she believed in me. And I
- 28:33Speaker 4: would do Chick Stick that night, 10 minutes. And she
- 28:36Speaker 4: believed in me.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Meaning the only girls could do it?
- 28:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it was like they had it on Wednesday night.
- 28:41Speaker 5: Yeah, of course, because you've got to have all the
- 28:43Speaker 5: girls together because no one wants to see a female comic, right?
- 28:45Speaker 1: Yeah. You know what I would always say to my audience?
- 28:48Speaker 5: They'd say, oh, I'm coming to see you. And they've
- 28:51Speaker 5: gotten better now because I've scolded them. And they'd write
- 28:54Speaker 5: me thinking they're being nice. I'm coming to see you tonight.
- 28:57Speaker 5: I'm dragging my husband. And I said, you know, you're
- 29:00Speaker 5: not helping the cause. Why are you thinking that your
- 29:03Speaker 5: husband won't find me entertaining?
- 29:05Speaker 1: If you find me entertaining... That means he married a
- 29:08Speaker 1: funny woman. So he will enjoy it just as much.
- 29:12Speaker 5: If let me just, you know, I'm like, if he
- 29:14Speaker 5: got brought home tickets to Chris Rock and said, we're
- 29:17Speaker 5: going to go see Chris Rock Friday, you're telling me
- 29:20Speaker 5: that you wouldn't be thrilled that you wouldn't get your
- 29:23Speaker 5: hair done.
- 29:23Speaker 1: I'm like, why is that? And I think.
- 29:26Speaker 5: Some of it is women think because there's a lot
- 29:29Speaker 5: of female comics that are maybe higher profile than us
- 29:34Speaker 5: that male bash and that are like, you know, super
- 29:38Speaker 5: left and male bash. And if their husband is not
- 29:40Speaker 5: that they think, Oh God, this is going to be
- 29:42Speaker 5: uncomfortable for him. Cause we all care about the man
- 29:45Speaker 5: and his ego and that he's having a good time.
- 29:47Speaker 1: It's just the way we are. And I think they think,
- 29:49Speaker 1: Oh God, you know, if she is.
- 29:52Speaker 5: Like, whatever, I'm not even going to say a name
- 29:55Speaker 5: of somebody that's like that, then he won't have a
- 29:58Speaker 5: good time. And then I'm like, trust me that like
- 30:02Speaker 5: that won't happen because I know that the men love it.
- 30:06Speaker 5: And after I like set it out, like I get
- 30:09Speaker 5: so many more like couples and straight men that are
- 30:12Speaker 5: like loving it.
- 30:14Speaker 4: Having them all.
- 30:14Speaker 5: But I feel like so early on in our careers too,
- 30:18Speaker 5: even before we made it, The male executives felt they
- 30:21Speaker 5: had to market it. I remember there was a whole
- 30:24Speaker 5: night of just female-driven.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Sitcoms all in one night. Like, what? Like, it was
- 30:32Speaker 1: just so weird.
- 30:33Speaker 5: And that they think that there's no way that unless
- 30:38Speaker 5: we live your life, I can't find you funny.
- 30:40Speaker 1: I'm like, well, then how do I find Chris Rock funny?
- 30:42Speaker 1: And how do I find Dave Chappelle funny?
- 30:45Speaker 4: Right.
- 30:45Speaker 5: So why couldn't someone who's not a female who's a
- 30:48Speaker 5: mother find you funny?
- 30:50Speaker 4: Like, it's just, I even had a man at a
- 30:53Speaker 4: big theater on my first tour, the big panty tour.
- 30:57Speaker 4: I had him, he came out and did announcements, you know,
- 31:01Speaker 4: you know, if there's a fire or whatever, turn your
- 31:03Speaker 4: cell phones off. And then he said, well, I know
- 31:05Speaker 4: you men got dragged here. And my heart dropped. And I,
- 31:10Speaker 4: and it was one of the first shows I did
- 31:12Speaker 4: on the big panty tour. And I was already freaked
- 31:13Speaker 4: out because it was the biggest thing that ever happened
- 31:14Speaker 4: to me. And it was in 2000, after the pandemic
- 31:19Speaker 4: got better.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:21Speaker 4: And I remember I called my manager and said, I
- 31:26Speaker 4: cannot believe that he just introduced me or introduced this
- 31:29Speaker 4: tour by saying, and I know you may not got
- 31:33Speaker 4: all dragged here. And it was a theater I'd sold
- 31:37Speaker 4: out in, I can't remember, somewhere. But I mean, you know,
- 31:41Speaker 4: I don't know what it was, 1,000, 1,200 seats. And
- 31:42Speaker 4: I was like, That didn't set me up well.
- 31:47Speaker 5: I'm so glad that you said something. Because I'm sure
- 31:51Speaker 5: there's been times that you didn't.
- 31:54Speaker 1: And, like, I hadn't. Same thing.
- 31:56Speaker 5: And I remember I was, like, I thought, you know,
- 31:59Speaker 5: I'd get some guy to open for me.
- 32:01Speaker 1: And this guy did a whole thing. I remember it
- 32:05Speaker 1: was Aspen. A whole thing about what it's like to
- 32:10Speaker 1: screw a woman over 40. At this time, I'm over 40.
- 32:14Speaker 1: This is Aspen. This is people over 40 that can
- 32:18Speaker 1: afford Aspen.
- 32:19Speaker 5: And it's all like, oh, they're grateful or they're dry
- 32:22Speaker 5: down there.
- 32:23Speaker 1: I could not. And I'm like, and I have to.
- 32:26Speaker 1: And this is my show.
- 32:28Speaker 5: But my I trusted my agent who I still, you know, like.
- 32:34Speaker 1: And, you know, to pick somebody.
- 32:36Speaker 5: And then he ends it. He goes, now I'm going
- 32:38Speaker 5: to bring out my really good friend. We just met backstage.
- 32:43Speaker 5: I was just like, and after that is when I
- 32:46Speaker 5: was like, I will never just get the local unless
- 32:50Speaker 5: you send me video and stuff. And I can make
- 32:54Speaker 5: sure and I can tell you, don't be dirty.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Don't do this.
- 32:58Speaker 5: And even when I've done that, I've had people backlash
- 33:01Speaker 5: and say, oh, she told me I couldn't be dirty
- 33:03Speaker 5: because she's so insecure in her career. I'm like, I
- 33:06Speaker 5: don't need you talking about anal at seven o'clock before
- 33:10Speaker 5: I come out.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Like, like, no, I don't know. Like I, if I can, I,
- 33:15Speaker 1: I don't talk about that.
- 33:16Speaker 5: But if I get a little dirty, the opener shouldn't
- 33:18Speaker 5: be dirty. I don't think that's unheard of.
- 33:20Speaker 4: Right.
- 33:21Speaker 5: But I think some of these guys just immediately think that, oh,
- 33:26Speaker 5: you know, and I've had that too.
- 33:29Speaker 4: And, but let me tell you what my manager would
- 33:31Speaker 4: say before I did this.
- 33:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:33Speaker 4: Big panty tour and picked who I wanted. When I
- 33:36Speaker 4: would do clubs, they would, and I was selling, I
- 33:39Speaker 4: started selling out all over the United States. Couldn't get arrested,
- 33:42Speaker 4: you know, for years. Nobody would book me. And then
- 33:44Speaker 4: they were like, all of a sudden, you know, I
- 33:46Speaker 4: was in demand and selling. And they, and he said,
- 33:50Speaker 4: she needs somebody clean. And they automatically thought, I don't
- 33:55Speaker 4: know why, but let's get a woman in her 60s
- 33:59Speaker 4: in community theater who wears black. Not even Birkenstocks. I
- 34:04Speaker 4: don't even know what you would call those shoes. And
- 34:07Speaker 4: somebody that, like, would get up and sing opera or
- 34:10Speaker 4: do something bizarre.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:12Speaker 4: And they thought, I guess because I'm a middle-aged woman,
- 34:15Speaker 4: that they had to get another.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Woman who was, you know, a kook. Oh, my God.
- 34:20Speaker 4: I had the kookiest women. God love them.
- 34:23Speaker 1: But, you know, I mean, just bizarre shoes. And also,
- 34:27Speaker 1: you don't need a woman.
- 34:28Speaker 4: I don't need a woman.
- 34:29Speaker 1: I'm not trying to take jobs from men. I want
- 34:32Speaker 1: someone different than me. Right. I just don't want them
- 34:35Speaker 1: talking about.
- 34:35Speaker 4: We ended up having to say, yeah, all right, we'll
- 34:37Speaker 4: take a man. But I've had... At Moon Tower, at
- 34:42Speaker 4: Moon Tower College Festival, they said, they said, Leigh Ann
- 34:47Speaker 4: needs somebody clean to open for her. They gave a
- 34:49Speaker 4: list of women. They always put women with me, but
- 34:52Speaker 4: a list of women, and somebody came and did... I mean,
- 34:57Speaker 4: the filthiest stuff. And I guess that was their idea
- 35:01Speaker 4: of clean. You know, somebody's idea of clean is different
- 35:05Speaker 4: than my idea of clean, I guess. But she did,
- 35:08Speaker 4: and I loved her. I mean, as a person, I
- 35:11Speaker 4: loved her. But I thought, is that who they put?
- 35:14Speaker 4: You have to have who you want. There's no guess
- 35:18Speaker 4: in it anymore. Which was why I was telling you
- 35:21Speaker 4: when I came in here, I'm in love with Chris Pringola.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Yes.
- 35:24Speaker 4: I love him with you. And I know that he
- 35:26Speaker 4: opens for Fortune some. And I just think he's so funny.
- 35:31Speaker 1: He's great. He's great. We've been friends for a long time. And, yeah,
- 35:35Speaker 1: I love him to death.
- 35:36Speaker 4: Oh, he's so darling.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:38Speaker 5: And so, okay, so when you started to, like, really
- 35:43Speaker 5: make it, I believe that someone sent me, did you
- 35:48Speaker 5: have a script or a sitcom deal?
- 35:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I've had several.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Oh, okay. And what happened with those?
- 35:53Speaker 4: Over the years. Which I think kept me in this,
- 35:57Speaker 4: you know, when I would be kicked down and I'd
- 35:59Speaker 4: get no's and nobody cared. Because I think about Comedy
- 36:01Speaker 4: Central never wanted me.
- 36:03Speaker 1: To do stand-up.
- 36:04Speaker 4: I mean, for years, like, Cap City Comedy Club in
- 36:07Speaker 4: Austin would put me up for something. I never got
- 36:10Speaker 4: that kind of stuff. Now I'd get Funniest Mom in America,
- 36:13Speaker 4: things from Nick at Night and stuff like that.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Oh, you did that?
- 36:16Speaker 4: I did it the first year.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Sandra Bernhard was the... Okay. And then wasn't, um, who
- 36:24Speaker 1: are some other people that was on with you?
- 36:26Speaker 4: The on with me would have been the woman that
- 36:29Speaker 4: won it. I'm always the bridesmaid, never the bride. I
- 36:32Speaker 4: didn't win it. Darlene West Gore won it the year
- 36:35Speaker 4: I did it. Um, there were funny people on it.
- 36:38Speaker 5: I think I, I mean, I watched it because I
- 36:39Speaker 5: was just getting back into comedy.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Like I didn't do standup.
- 36:42Speaker 5: I did stand up in my twenties and then I
- 36:44Speaker 5: stopped at, Oh, here's why I stopped doing it.
- 36:48Speaker 1: So I got a deal.
- 36:50Speaker 5: A TV deal about my life and I was 30
- 36:54Speaker 5: and my manager at the time said, don't do standup
- 36:58Speaker 5: because if for some reason you bomb in LA, it's
- 37:02Speaker 5: going to look bad that you have a deal. I mean,
- 37:06Speaker 5: and I also never really bombed. I mean, I would
- 37:08Speaker 5: have better nights, but I never was like crickets or
- 37:11Speaker 5: nothing like that. And so I was just like, Okay.
- 37:15Speaker 5: And so then I kind of stopped doing it. And
- 37:16Speaker 5: then I always lived far from the clubs and I
- 37:18Speaker 5: was never a regular at a club. So then I
- 37:20Speaker 5: just let, like, then I basically didn't do it for
- 37:22Speaker 5: a bunch of years. And for the same reason, like,
- 37:24Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, to go and waste five hours, like,
- 37:26Speaker 5: downtown or whatever.
- 37:27Speaker 4: Oh, I don't know how y'all do it here. I
- 37:30Speaker 4: don't know how y'all do all that.
- 37:32Speaker 5: Well, I don't really do the clubs here. So, like,
- 37:34Speaker 5: because of the same thing, I would just rather go
- 37:36Speaker 5: do stand-up somewhere else. But I did back then, you know.
- 37:41Speaker 1: But, okay, so when.
- 37:43Speaker 5: So what happened with all your deals? Did you ever
- 37:46Speaker 5: get close to having a sitcom?
- 37:47Speaker 4: I think the first one was probably, well, the second
- 37:51Speaker 4: one was pretty close too, but just different things happened.
- 37:53Speaker 4: All right, the first one was with ABC and Warner Brothers,
- 37:56Speaker 4: and at the Laugh Factory I did a showcase in
- 37:58Speaker 4: front of a bunch of executives, and ABC bought it
- 38:01Speaker 4: before we got out of the parking lot. They wanted
- 38:03Speaker 4: Paula Deen to play my mother. I went and met her.
- 38:05Speaker 4: We hit it off. She said yes, and the writer's
- 38:09Speaker 4: strike hit, and it ended. Within a day. And I
- 38:14Speaker 4: think I went into a clinical depression.
- 38:16Speaker 1: But your show ended within a day.
- 38:17Speaker 4: Yeah, they said it's over. Okay. The writer's strike hit.
- 38:19Speaker 4: We're not doing anything.
- 38:20Speaker 1: It's dead. Okay. And I didn't know how Hollywood worked.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Right. And I really, in my heart, thought this is it.
- 38:27Speaker 4: I'm going to be a sitcom star. And I didn't
- 38:29Speaker 4: realize how, you know, it's easier to win the lottery
- 38:32Speaker 4: than it is to get a television show on there.
- 38:34Speaker 5: Right.
- 38:34Speaker 4: So I thought, oh, this is it. And then it
- 38:37Speaker 4: ended in a day. And they were like, it's over, Lynn.
- 38:40Speaker 4: And I had been, you know.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Traveling all over.
- 38:43Speaker 4: They would send me to go with Paula to open
- 38:45Speaker 4: for her to do all this stuff. I was back
- 38:47Speaker 4: and forth to LA. And then they were like, it's over.
- 38:49Speaker 4: So my husband bought me a binkle in Ogden, Utah,
- 38:53Speaker 4: trying to make it up to me. And, and I
- 38:56Speaker 4: love that dog. And he's an old little man now,
- 38:58Speaker 4: and he's been the best dog we've ever had. But
- 39:00Speaker 4: I remember just being in, just staying, you know, sitting,
- 39:03Speaker 4: staring into space. And that little precious binkle would just
- 39:06Speaker 4: sit and look at me and pee in the floor.
- 39:08Speaker 4: And I just thought, What is it? I mean, my
- 39:11Speaker 4: life is over. And then, not my life is over
- 39:13Speaker 4: because I had these precious children. Well, then I get
- 39:15Speaker 4: the second deal.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Could not.
- 39:18Speaker 4: I was on a tour called the Southern Front Chicks.
- 39:20Speaker 4: I don't know if you ever heard about us.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Is that where you were? That's what Trish did.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Trish sure did that. Yeah, she did it after I
- 39:26Speaker 1: did it. Okay, all right.
- 39:26Speaker 4: But I was one of the original ones.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Yes.
- 39:28Speaker 4: And they were going to shoot us. for CMT, and
- 39:31Speaker 4: I couldn't do it because I had this deal with ABC.
- 39:33Speaker 4: They didn't want me to do it.
- 39:35Speaker 5: Yeah, because God forbid you have more exposure to get
- 39:37Speaker 5: people excited to possibly watch your show.
- 39:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Yeah, doesn't that make sense?
- 39:41Speaker 2: Uh-uh.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Okay, go on.
- 39:42Speaker 4: And then, so, yeah, but that's how I met Trish.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:46Speaker 4: But Southern Fried Chicks was wonderful for me because it
- 39:48Speaker 4: was on the weekends in small theaters. And I was
- 39:51Speaker 4: really the opener for the other two that were very seasoned.
- 39:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 39:55Speaker 4: Professional comedians. But it was a good way for me
- 39:58Speaker 4: to get that time on stage.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:00Speaker 4: It was from heaven, really. And that was about three years.
- 40:03Speaker 4: We did 50 dates a year. And I never had
- 40:05Speaker 4: to hire anybody to take care of these kids. Chuck
- 40:07Speaker 4: would be with them on the weekend.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:09Speaker 4: I could take them to school during the week. And
- 40:11Speaker 4: I didn't work every weekend. But anyway, and then I couldn't.
- 40:16Speaker 4: It's like that deal came. I thought, I'm going to
- 40:18Speaker 4: be the next Roseanne. Then it was over. Then couldn't
- 40:22Speaker 4: get booked. Was just begging anybody if I could, you know,
- 40:26Speaker 4: do the... I was your big fundraiser person in Knoxville. Like,
- 40:30Speaker 4: if you needed somebody to come and do a few
- 40:32Speaker 4: minutes for the breast cancer fundraiser, I was your person. Right.
- 40:35Speaker 1: So I was doing that kind of stuff. Felt like
- 40:38Speaker 1: it was over. But you weren't making, like, good money.
- 40:41Speaker 1: I was making pretty good money. Oh, pretty good money.
- 40:43Speaker 1: So you're... You know, a few thousand a night to
- 40:46Speaker 1: do these things.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Okay, yeah.
- 40:48Speaker 4: And then, out of the blue, I get.
- 40:54Speaker 4: Uh, Fremantle that did American Idol said, we'd like to
- 40:58Speaker 4: do a sitcom with her and we want to put
- 41:00Speaker 4: her with Matt Williams who created Roseanne and Home Improvement.
- 41:03Speaker 4: They want to do a show with him on Nick
- 41:05Speaker 4: at Night, like the Cosby show and, and all those
- 41:08Speaker 4: kinds of shows. And so I met Matt Williams. We
- 41:11Speaker 4: fell in love, darling. And he said, yes, I'll do
- 41:14Speaker 4: it for her. And we, he came to Knoxville, met
- 41:18Speaker 4: my family, built this sitcom around me. And then Nick
- 41:22Speaker 4: at night, he called me and he said, Lynn, you're
- 41:25Speaker 4: going to have to trust me. Nick at night, I think,
- 41:27Speaker 4: wants to make this into like a children's show, like Disney.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Not a sitcom like. Yeah, like Cornwall City.
- 41:35Speaker 4: Yeah, like Possum Loose in the Living Room is what
- 41:38Speaker 4: he called it.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Possum Gets Loose in the Living Room. Yeah, that would
- 41:42Speaker 1: be the big funny moment.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Yeah, and he said, I'm not doing that. And you
- 41:46Speaker 4: got to trust me. I got to take it back.
- 41:48Speaker 4: So he took it back from Nick at night. And
- 41:50Speaker 4: that caused a big stink. And then we went to
- 41:52Speaker 4: TV Land and they bought it in the room and said,
- 41:56Speaker 4: we want to do something. And then held on to
- 41:59Speaker 4: it for nine months and then came back and said,
- 42:01Speaker 4: she's too traditional. She's married to a man. She's got kids.
- 42:06Speaker 4: It's just not what's in.
- 42:07Speaker 1: What year is this?
- 42:09Speaker 4: This would have been, what year would that have been? Lord,
- 42:12Speaker 4: I have no conception of time.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Like 10 years ago or like five years ago?
- 42:15Speaker 4: Yeah, 10 years ago.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Okay.
- 42:16Speaker 4: Like Modern Family had come out. It was a huge hit.
- 42:19Speaker 6: Right.
- 42:19Speaker 4: And I understand why.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I sold another show.
- 42:23Speaker 5: Well, first of all, when the first show didn't go, okay,
- 42:26Speaker 5: after that, and it got to, like, the pilot stage,
- 42:28Speaker 5: it didn't go.
- 42:29Speaker 1: And so right after they said it's not going to go.
- 42:32Speaker 5: I remember they were like, Les Moonves is reading it
- 42:35Speaker 5: this weekend and blah, blah, blah.
- 42:36Speaker 1: It was with CBS.
- 42:37Speaker 5: And then they're like, they wanted it for Sherry O'Terry
- 42:40Speaker 5: to play me because I wasn't famous enough.
- 42:44Speaker 1: They were like, maybe you could be the sister. Anyway,
- 42:47Speaker 1: she didn't like it.
- 42:48Speaker 5: She had to deal with CBS, so she passed on it.
- 42:50Speaker 1: And they're like, so it's not going anywhere. And so
- 42:53Speaker 1: then I was like, oh, okay. And then I went
- 42:56Speaker 1: off the pill. Oh, do we have the other iPad?
- 43:00Speaker 1: Pop it on the other one. I'm just going to
- 43:03Speaker 1: keep talking.
- 43:04Speaker 4: Who cares?
- 43:06Speaker 1: People like to see the behind the scenes stuff.
- 43:08Speaker 5: Anyway, so then she, so then, but then I went
- 43:14Speaker 5: off the pill and then I got pregnant right away
- 43:16Speaker 5: with my first child.
- 43:18Speaker 1: But if I had the show gone, I wasn't going
- 43:19Speaker 1: to try to get pregnant.
- 43:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:22Speaker 1: So then I had.
- 43:22Speaker 5: Another show, which reminds me of, you know, being.
- 43:26Speaker 1: And I thought... I met with these people, and I
- 43:29Speaker 1: thought they were really interested. After it had.
- 43:32Speaker 5: Gone already, they were like, these people, Fox doesn't want it,
- 43:35Speaker 5: but maybe USA will want it.
- 43:36Speaker 1: After Fox had bought it, they didn't want it. And
- 43:39Speaker 1: the guy goes... I.
- 43:41Speaker 5: Mean, again, he's like, I mean, like, her family, it's
- 43:44Speaker 5: just like two... I mean, too traditional. He goes, like,
- 43:49Speaker 5: maybe if you were like, I'm not kidding. He goes,
- 43:51Speaker 5: maybe if you were like aliens or something. I'm not kidding.
- 43:55Speaker 5: He said, maybe if you're alien. And I'm like, well,
- 43:59Speaker 5: then no. Like, I'm not going to rewrite it to
- 44:04Speaker 5: be an alien.
- 44:06Speaker 4: So goodbye.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Okay, so then they said, you're too traditional after nine
- 44:11Speaker 1: months of holding it.
- 44:11Speaker 4: Yeah, and Matt Williams said to me, Matt Williams, who
- 44:14Speaker 4: created Roseanne and Home Improvement, and, you know, for Carsey
- 44:17Speaker 4: Warner and all that.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 44:19Speaker 4: He goes, Lynn, I don't know what to tell you.
- 44:21Speaker 4: He goes, I don't, you know, what do you say
- 44:23Speaker 4: to that? He goes, they want to have a hook.
- 44:27Speaker 4: And so for a while there.
- 44:29Speaker 1: We were thinking. Like you had to be a lesbian.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:32Speaker 4: Yeah, yes, because I'm white. You know, if it would
- 44:36Speaker 4: be good if I were an alternative lifestyle. They even
- 44:39Speaker 4: talked about, like, an interactive thing. Like, if people could
- 44:42Speaker 4: almost rewrite the script as we're going through the... Matt goes,
- 44:46Speaker 4: I just don't even know what to do.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Okay, I.
- 44:50Speaker 5: Have another friend of mine who did have a show.
- 44:54Speaker 1: I don't even care. I'm just going to tell.
- 44:59Speaker 4: It was Fortune.
- 44:59Speaker 5: Fortune had a show. And during her time of trying
- 45:03Speaker 5: to get her show off the air, they were like,
- 45:06Speaker 5: but your family, you.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Know, is all white. With her being a gay girl? Yeah,
- 45:16Speaker 1: she's herself, she's gay. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:17Speaker 5: But the people, but that's her family. And so then
- 45:22Speaker 5: I remember she was like, so they were saying like,
- 45:24Speaker 5: can we cast like your brother's wife to not be
- 45:30Speaker 5: a white person.
- 45:32Speaker 1: And I mean, she's like, sure. Anything you want to
- 45:34Speaker 1: make the show work. Right. But I remember her telling
- 45:36Speaker 1: me this Sunday, but you know what?
- 45:38Speaker 5: If you're this Southern white family and now your brother's
- 45:42Speaker 5: married to this woman who's not white, wouldn't there be
- 45:46Speaker 5: storylines and discussions about that?
- 45:49Speaker 1: You could be embracing her. It could be great. Yeah.
- 45:51Speaker 5: But if we're being honest about a family and a
- 45:53Speaker 5: home and how they talk, it's not like you would
- 45:56Speaker 5: just never acknowledge that. That your brother is now not
- 45:59Speaker 5: married to, you know what I mean? So that kind
- 46:01Speaker 5: of changes her life story because it was based on
- 46:06Speaker 5: her life story. Anyway, I think they, I don't know
- 46:10Speaker 5: if they ever filmed the pilot or if they got
- 46:11Speaker 5: to go to the writing site, but it's that kind
- 46:13Speaker 5: of thing where then you're like, and it's why like
- 46:16Speaker 5: everyone thinks like, oh, you come up with this sitcom
- 46:19Speaker 5: idea or you have this perfect 10 minutes that I
- 46:21Speaker 5: can see it. I can see what your sitcom would
- 46:23Speaker 5: be from your 10 minutes. But then when you get
- 46:25Speaker 5: all these people involved that are like, Like I had
- 46:27Speaker 5: the first time I sold a show, I had, it
- 46:30Speaker 5: was about a young girl working with her parents in
- 46:31Speaker 5: real estate, which is based on my life and based
- 46:34Speaker 5: on my standup. And I had these brothers that were
- 46:37Speaker 5: like arrested development brothers. They were like, you know, like
- 46:40Speaker 5: 40 and like living at home and dah, dah, dah.
- 46:42Speaker 5: And I remember they go, we're going to make the
- 46:44Speaker 5: brothers into one and he's going to be 18.
- 46:46Speaker 1: And I'm like, well then that's not like, no offense.
- 46:51Speaker 1: It's not a loser.
- 46:51Speaker 5: Like it was kind of funny that we had this
- 46:53Speaker 5: kind of like, Like the whole, I'm like, it doesn't
- 46:55Speaker 5: even make sense. And then, but at that point I
- 46:58Speaker 5: was like, whatever. My deal was like, even if I
- 47:01Speaker 5: never even show up, I'm going to get a check.
- 47:03Speaker 5: So if they want to sell this dumb watered down script,
- 47:05Speaker 5: I didn't care. But the second time around when they
- 47:07Speaker 5: wanted me to be an alien is when I was like,
- 47:10Speaker 5: you know what?
- 47:11Speaker 1: I just don't even care. I don't care. It's like.
- 47:15Speaker 1: So anyway.
- 47:15Speaker 6: I know.
- 47:16Speaker 4: So I've had four. Yeah.
- 47:18Speaker 1: And I've loved all the writers and all that.
- 47:21Speaker 4: But then they get to the executives or whatever, and
- 47:24Speaker 4: they have to check off boxes. So the last one,
- 47:27Speaker 4: they said, you're going to be married to a Hispanic man,
- 47:30Speaker 4: which I've always loved Hispanic men. Yeah. I've always loved
- 47:34Speaker 4: Hispanic men. And my girls know that. They're sitting in here.
- 47:39Speaker 4: My grandmother married a Hispanic man who was my step
- 47:42Speaker 4: granddaddy who was darling and he would talk Spanish to her.
- 47:46Speaker 1: We believe you. And love talk.
- 47:48Speaker 4: And I've always loved Hispanic men.
- 47:50Speaker 1: But it's not your life story though.
- 47:51Speaker 4: But it's not my life story.
- 47:52Speaker 1: And if you were.
- 47:53Speaker 4: Would a Hispanic man be quiet and introverted like Chuck Morgan?
- 47:58Speaker 5: No.
- 47:59Speaker 1: A Hispanic man would be, you know, we would dance
- 48:01Speaker 1: in the kitchen.
- 48:02Speaker 5: You'd have a completely different life, a completely different dynamic.
- 48:04Speaker 5: You'd have those in-laws. It would just change it too much.
- 48:07Speaker 5: If that's what they want, then go get some talented
- 48:09Speaker 5: writers and write a story about, you know, a white girl.
- 48:16Speaker 1: But it's not your story. Put Laura Linney in it. Yeah.
- 48:18Speaker 1: You know, you don't have to have me. Exactly. But
- 48:21Speaker 1: you're right. They take, they go, we love it. We
- 48:23Speaker 1: love it. We love you.
- 48:25Speaker 4: We love these kids.
- 48:26Speaker 1: But then they wonder why these shows don't work.
- 48:27Speaker 4: And then they put it into, well, this child is...
- 48:32Speaker 4: this not not right how my real so i don't
- 48:35Speaker 4: have storylines for that i don't i can't write for
- 48:38Speaker 4: that i don't know yeah you know my that's not
- 48:41Speaker 4: who my child is right so now i mean yeah
- 48:45Speaker 4: i'd like to have a i guess i'd like to
- 48:47Speaker 4: have a television show but i mean you know and
- 48:49Speaker 4: now i'm traveling and i'm and these live shows are
- 48:52Speaker 4: so wonderful that i think don't you feel.
- 48:55Speaker 5: Like my goals have changed don't you feel like even
- 48:57Speaker 5: if the offer came to you right now you'd be
- 48:58Speaker 5: like fuck it.
- 49:00Speaker 4: If it did and it was somebody that it made sense, maybe.
- 49:05Speaker 1: But it would also have to be like, no, I'm
- 49:07Speaker 1: not going to give in. Like, I was giving in
- 49:09Speaker 1: on things.
- 49:09Speaker 5: I remember one of the things in my pilot for
- 49:11Speaker 5: the second time around was I met with this girl.
- 49:15Speaker 5: You know, they wanted me to write it with somebody
- 49:17Speaker 5: that was actually like a showrunner of other shows.
- 49:20Speaker 1: And I was like, that's fine. I liked her a lot.
- 49:22Speaker 5: And some of my friends, you know, Chelsea lately read
- 49:26Speaker 5: it and stuff.
- 49:26Speaker 1: And this one guy that I really liked, he's like.
- 49:30Speaker 5: I don't feel like this is totally you because there
- 49:32Speaker 5: was like a Xanax reference or something. And I don't
- 49:38Speaker 5: take any prescription drugs that I never have. And, but
- 49:43Speaker 5: the mom, you know, my character was like, Oh, hand
- 49:46Speaker 5: me a Xanax. Like I'll have a Chardonnay.
- 49:48Speaker 1: That's real. But like, Oh, hand me a Xanax.
- 49:51Speaker 5: Like, let's be a little edgy. Let's, you know what
- 49:53Speaker 5: mom isn't on like drugs or whatever. And I remember
- 49:55Speaker 5: he said that and I go, I know you're right.
- 49:58Speaker 1: I don't know why. I don't know why I couldn't
- 50:01Speaker 1: tell this woman. I didn't want that joke.
- 50:03Speaker 5: Like I wasn't, ready to be my complete authentic creative
- 50:07Speaker 5: self in that, because it was like, I didn't have
- 50:10Speaker 5: another way of making money. And how could you say
- 50:12Speaker 5: no to like possibly star in a sitcom?
- 50:15Speaker 4: Right.
- 50:15Speaker 1: But then you wonder about all the ones that made it.
- 50:18Speaker 5: And it's like, every element has to be there. It
- 50:21Speaker 5: has to have the great, you know, it has to
- 50:22Speaker 5: have the great time slot and all that, but then
- 50:24Speaker 5: it has to have, I remember when I would guested
- 50:27Speaker 5: on Frazier and I, They were at the Lucky Lot.
- 50:32Speaker 5: There was one of the lots is like 13 at,
- 50:35Speaker 5: I think, Paramount or whatever. And they were like, this
- 50:41Speaker 5: is the Lucky Lot because this is like literally, I
- 50:43Speaker 5: don't know if it was I Love Lucy or whatever.
- 50:45Speaker 1: Every show that was there lasted a lot of years.
- 50:48Speaker 1: So I'm waiting. So they're like, oh, okay.
- 50:50Speaker 5: And this is where you're going to hang out. You know,
- 50:51Speaker 5: you work all week and then you do like, you know,
- 50:54Speaker 5: a live audience at the end. And we're in this
- 50:57Speaker 5: room that's not bigger than this. And there is Kelsey Grammer,
- 51:01Speaker 5: and there are the two girls, and there's everybody. And
- 51:04Speaker 5: I'm like, don't they have their own dressing rooms?
- 51:08Speaker 1: And they're like, no.
- 51:10Speaker 5: And I'm like, that's why this show works. Because they're
- 51:13Speaker 5: talking about their weekend, and they didn't ask for it.
- 51:17Speaker 5: That's what they got. But I'm like, this is why
- 51:20Speaker 5: it's the lucky lot. It's because they're not all in
- 51:22Speaker 5: their trailers or back then on their phones. And that chemistry,
- 51:27Speaker 5: you just cannot... It has to be cast right, but
- 51:30Speaker 5: then they have to actually love each other, like friends.
- 51:34Speaker 4: I wonder, is that what happened with Everybody Loves Raymond?
- 51:37Speaker 4: Because I read Phil Rosenthal's book.
- 51:40Speaker 1: Oh, I've interviewed Phil, too.
- 51:42Speaker 4: You have?
- 51:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:43Speaker 4: And I read his book about how they would come
- 51:45Speaker 4: in on the weekend. I mean, during the week and
- 51:47Speaker 4: talk about what happened on the weekend. And they were
- 51:50Speaker 4: all very close. And that had to have been what
- 51:52Speaker 4: it was.
- 51:53Speaker 1: That's what it was. I talked to him about it, too.
- 51:55Speaker 1: And he was just like... It was the, yeah, it was,
- 51:58Speaker 1: it was a perfect thing. And I've said that too.
- 52:00Speaker 1: It's like, it just, it's lightning in a bottle.
- 52:03Speaker 5: And that's why there's only, and then after Friends made
- 52:06Speaker 5: it every year, I'd get tons of pilots.
- 52:09Speaker 1: It's Friends in Alaska. It's Friends in San Diego.
- 52:12Speaker 5: Everybody was trying to do a different combination of it.
- 52:15Speaker 5: But the only one that lasted was Friends.
- 52:18Speaker 1: You know, and like.
- 52:19Speaker 4: What do you think about TV now? What do you,
- 52:22Speaker 4: is there a place for a sitcom? I mean, I
- 52:24Speaker 4: know Abbott.
- 52:25Speaker 1: Elementary.
- 52:26Speaker 4: People always talk about that.
- 52:27Speaker 1: But that's not a sitcom in front of a live audience.
- 52:30Speaker 4: Right.
- 52:31Speaker 1: I don't even know. What shows are in front of
- 52:33Speaker 1: a live audience? I don't even know. I don't know.
- 52:35Speaker 1: But are people even doing that?
- 52:36Speaker 5: But that's what I always imagined my life to be.
- 52:39Speaker 5: That I'd be a mom in a sitcom. And I'm
- 52:43Speaker 5: kind of like, that doesn't really... That's not my desire anymore.
- 52:47Speaker 4: It kind of changed.
- 52:49Speaker 6: And.
- 52:50Speaker 5: you know, and, and like, I don't even know that
- 52:52Speaker 5: it would make financial sense, you know, like to do it.
- 52:55Speaker 5: And I think that's why some of the biggest, um,
- 52:57Speaker 5: standups now, like I know Bert Kreischer, all these people
- 53:00Speaker 5: have been offered all this stuff. And if it, and
- 53:02Speaker 5: you're like, no, they're not doing it because it's like,
- 53:06Speaker 5: are you kidding me? He goes on tour and this
- 53:08Speaker 5: and that. And if it's not going to be what
- 53:10Speaker 5: they want, it's like, well, why would you, I also
- 53:12Speaker 5: think sometimes, and I've said this too, like I do
- 53:16Speaker 5: think sometimes the stories that we tell as a stand-up,
- 53:20Speaker 5: that art form, is better when you're sitting in the
- 53:24Speaker 5: audience and imagining what your kids look like than when
- 53:29Speaker 5: 13 people get together and cast it and now we're
- 53:32Speaker 5: going to see the.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Story of when the chicken burned. It's not as funny.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:37Speaker 5: And I think everyone thinks like, oh my God, this
- 53:39Speaker 5: is so great, you know. But then they have to
- 53:42Speaker 5: not then try to, like I remember Margaret Cho, I
- 53:45Speaker 5: read her book. And she got her deal when she
- 53:48Speaker 5: was 25 called All-American Girl and everything.
- 53:52Speaker 1: And they made her lose all this weight.
- 53:54Speaker 4: I need to read that book.
- 53:56Speaker 5: And she became like anorexic. And they were like, no,
- 54:00Speaker 5: you have to be like the hot girl, which wasn't
- 54:03Speaker 5: what made her funny. Like she was this girl from
- 54:05Speaker 5: San Francisco who blah, blah, blah. And then the guy
- 54:09Speaker 5: that she paired, that was paired with her to write
- 54:11Speaker 5: the sitcom, she's like, he just watched one of my
- 54:14Speaker 5: specials and just only one. And then literally took all
- 54:18Speaker 5: my jokes from that one special and put.
- 54:20Speaker 1: It in the second, like extremely, extremely lazy. You know
- 54:25Speaker 1: what I mean? And it's like, well, where will this
- 54:27Speaker 1: show go? Like in five years?
- 54:30Speaker 4: What would Rob a hundred episodes?
- 54:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Like, I don't think people think like that, you know?
- 54:34Speaker 5: Okay. So, so now you're like, okay, so you have
- 54:40Speaker 5: all your, so then, so now you're just exploded as like,
- 54:43Speaker 5: Was it the Facebook stuff?
- 54:44Speaker 1: What made it like that now?
- 54:46Speaker 5: Okay.
- 54:46Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of people know you.
- 54:47Speaker 4: Do you know what Dry Bar is?
- 54:48Speaker 5: Yes.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Dry Bar specials. Okay.
- 54:51Speaker 4: So in 2000.
- 54:52Speaker 1: Chris did one of those.
- 54:53Speaker 4: Little Chris Frangoletti? Yeah. That angel did it.
- 54:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 54:57Speaker 4: I've got to watch his.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Yeah. But it has to be clean, right?
- 55:01Speaker 4: It has to be clean.
- 55:02Speaker 1: Is it run by Mormons or something? Yeah.
- 55:05Speaker 4: Yeah. And I was one of the first ones. I
- 55:08Speaker 4: think I was in the second season. And back then,
- 55:11Speaker 4: they gave you a list of like, do not say
- 55:13Speaker 4: these words. If you do, it'll get... At the time,
- 55:17Speaker 4: it was on a different platform or whatever.
- 55:21Speaker 1: You wouldn't get as much money. I don't even remember.
- 55:23Speaker 4: I don't think it's like that anymore. But so my
- 55:27Speaker 4: manager at the time said, they want you to do
- 55:29Speaker 4: this dry bar. He said, nobody's ever heard of it.
- 55:32Speaker 4: Nobody will ever see it. He goes, we can get
- 55:33Speaker 4: at least... It'll be a nice film. You can get
- 55:35Speaker 4: clips so you can get more... breast cancer fundraisers. So,
- 55:40Speaker 4: because that's what I was doing.
- 55:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:42Speaker 4: And, and I knew my boy got married right out
- 55:44Speaker 4: of college at 23 and I knew they wanted to
- 55:46Speaker 4: have babies. And I, I really was going through a,
- 55:50Speaker 4: like a crisis in 2018, 2019. Like this is, I
- 55:55Speaker 4: don't even know. I know it's not going anywhere.
- 55:57Speaker 1: You're, you're going through a career like identity. Yeah.
- 56:00Speaker 4: And I remember saying to my husband, I'm going to,
- 56:02Speaker 4: maybe I could open up a store in Knoxville, like a,
- 56:05Speaker 4: like a hardware store and I could just sit out
- 56:07Speaker 4: in front and dazzle people. And I mean, and I
- 56:09Speaker 4: was about in tears and he was like, what? And then,
- 56:12Speaker 4: and I was like, I don't know. It just didn't
- 56:14Speaker 4: say nothing was happening. It was, it was, I was
- 56:17Speaker 4: very sad.
- 56:18Speaker 5: One time I asked, one time I was like, when
- 56:20Speaker 5: I was for so long, like things weren't happening either,
- 56:23Speaker 5: you know? And I was like, there, is it a
- 56:27Speaker 5: fine line between positivity and delusion?
- 56:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Like, am I delusional?
- 56:32Speaker 4: I thought I was delusional. And I thought I was
- 56:34Speaker 4: like the kids on American Idol that think they can sing.
- 56:37Speaker 1: I thought, am I one of those?
- 56:40Speaker 4: Do I think I'm funny and I'm really not? I've
- 56:43Speaker 4: gone through that.
- 56:44Speaker 5: And then I think, no, I've... So you're crying to
- 56:47Speaker 5: the husband.
- 56:48Speaker 4: So I told him, I go, I need that job.
- 56:50Speaker 4: I've always, I want to do, they were grown. I thought,
- 56:52Speaker 4: I'm going to do something. And he was like, you're
- 56:55Speaker 4: losing your mind.
- 56:56Speaker 1: And then.
- 56:57Speaker 4: So, but I thought they'll have a baby and I'll be,
- 56:59Speaker 4: I'll just be the grandmama and I'll help with the baby.
- 57:02Speaker 4: And my manager at the time said, why don't you
- 57:05Speaker 4: go do this dry bar thing? He goes, nobody's ever
- 57:09Speaker 4: going to see it. It was like before it, even
- 57:11Speaker 4: the first season came out. So he said, they're going
- 57:13Speaker 4: to give you a little bit of money. So I
- 57:15Speaker 4: went and did that and, and just like forgot about
- 57:18Speaker 4: it and thought nothing's going to, you know, I didn't
- 57:21Speaker 4: think anything about it. That aired, I got millions of views,
- 57:27Speaker 4: like 50 million views. One of the bits about her being,
- 57:31Speaker 4: about the middle child being mean when she was 16
- 57:33Speaker 4: must have resonated with people. That got a lot of,
- 57:36Speaker 4: but it did not translate into, I got a.
- 57:40Speaker 1: Lot of gigs.
- 57:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 57:42Speaker 4: But it wasn't great gigs. Like a lot of people,
- 57:45Speaker 4: it was still like low paying gigs. you know, we'll
- 57:48Speaker 4: pay you $ 3, 500 like corporate things, but you got to
- 57:51Speaker 4: pay your travel out of it.
- 57:52Speaker 1: And I was busy.
- 57:53Speaker 5: But were you doing like, uh, weekends where you do
- 57:55Speaker 5: like five shows at a club and headline it or
- 57:57Speaker 5: not really?
- 57:58Speaker 4: I did only like a few clubs a year that
- 58:01Speaker 4: would book me that loved me and, and cared about
- 58:04Speaker 4: me like Cap City Comedy Club in Austin, Zany's. I
- 58:08Speaker 4: didn't do the weekends at Zany's cause I couldn't bring in,
- 58:10Speaker 4: you know, I couldn't sell tickets, but he, Brian would
- 58:12Speaker 4: give me a Sunday or a Tuesday night or something. And, um,
- 58:17Speaker 4: But no, nobody, nobody wanted me like that. But I
- 58:19Speaker 4: had a show on Sirius XM for a while. Like
- 58:22Speaker 4: there was always something God would drop and go, stay
- 58:26Speaker 4: in it. And then, you know, I've had a lot
- 58:28Speaker 4: of nifty things happen to me and Hollywood stuff, you know,
- 58:32Speaker 4: four deals, you know.
- 58:33Speaker 1: People coming out.
- 58:34Speaker 4: But anyway, but wouldn't make it. But, but so I
- 58:37Speaker 4: always felt like I was in the game. Yeah.
- 58:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 58:40Speaker 4: But around that time, I thought, this is crazy. I'm
- 58:44Speaker 4: getting older. You know, I'm probably going to have a grandbaby.
- 58:46Speaker 4: This is nuts. I'm going to go to work at
- 58:49Speaker 4: Target or something. And then my manager, after the dry
- 58:53Speaker 4: bar thing, got me in Orlando Improv and a couple
- 58:59Speaker 4: of places, Chicago Zanies, and couldn't sell tickets. And they
- 59:03Speaker 4: were like, oh, you're one of those dry bar comics. Like,
- 59:06Speaker 4: like we're you're not really a comedian but we're letting
- 59:08Speaker 4: y'all come in here because it that had boomed and
- 59:11Speaker 4: was very successful and people were loving dry bar but
- 59:14Speaker 4: i don't think it translates into ticket sale i know
- 59:16Speaker 4: it doesn't it didn't for me yeah nobody was buying
- 59:19Speaker 4: tickets yeah.
- 59:20Speaker 5: It's really interesting what translates into actually leaving your house
- 59:24Speaker 5: and going right and i don't think dry bar people
- 59:26Speaker 5: were Or even, like, huge follows. Like, it's interesting, like,
- 59:31Speaker 5: these people that have huge Instagram following, then they start
- 59:34Speaker 5: a podcast, and they're like, no, I'll like your picture,
- 59:36Speaker 5: but I'm not going to listen to you talk for
- 59:37Speaker 5: an hour.
- 59:38Speaker 1: So not every medium, like, crosses over.
- 59:41Speaker 4: Right. Okay, so they would say in Orlando, love her.
- 59:46Speaker 4: She doesn't get drunk and find the parking lot, but
- 59:48Speaker 4: we're not having her back. I mean, you know, she
- 59:50Speaker 4: can't sell tickets, and I was devastated. And I was like,
- 59:53Speaker 4: I had a good time. And so then... I said
- 59:58Speaker 4: to my manager at the time, I said, I love,
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: I've always loved Jim Gaffigan. There's different people I've loved
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: to watch. And I was watching his social media and
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: I said, he's got somebody doing his social media. And
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: I said to my manager, I think I need to
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: hire somebody to do my social media. And he was like,
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: you can't afford that. And you don't need to be
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: doing that. And But I'd made some money from Dry
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: Bar and the gigs, you know, I worked like a
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: meal that year, but it wasn't good gigs.
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: It wasn't what I wanted. It wasn't like what I'm
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: doing now.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: And I was very discouraged, but I thought, I'm going
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: to hire these people. boys that, and I call them boys,
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: they're 30 and they've got children, darling. But I thought
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: I'm going to hire these young people that know how
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: to put all this together. Cause I was putting up
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: pictures of my dogs and I didn't know what I
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: was doing.
- 1:00:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: And, and, um, or they had posed something or, you know,
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: for me, I didn't know. Yeah. And so I gave
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: them all my stuff, you know, that I feel my
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: head and cause I never done anything. Dry bar wouldn't
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: let us use their special. I couldn't cut that up
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: and use it. But anyway, I got all my old
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: stuff and gave it to these young guys. And I
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: was moving my baby into, she was going to school
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: in New York.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: And I, and they, they started October, 2019. They put
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: out a clip about me talking about taking my husband
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: to go see deaf leopard and journey and how everybody
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: looked old and people had plantar fasciitis. And you know,
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: the little man that rock sing rock and roll got
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: tiny legs.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: We were moving her out and I, and we had
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: all these suitcases. We were in this tiny hotel room. And,
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: and I said, I looked down, And I could see
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: it was being shared thousands of times. Like I could,
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: I saw something and I could feel it. I said,
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: something's happening. And their dad was like, Lynn, quit looking
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: at your phone. The Uber's here.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: And we got to get these suitcases out because we
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: had to move.
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: Her into her apartment. And everybody was stressed out over that.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: And I thought, oh, okay. And then throughout the, you know,
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: putting her stuff in her cabinets and her, you know,
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: in her apartment, through the day, like I thought, Oh,
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: my Lord. Like, I've never had anything.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Do like this. And then they may have put out
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: another one.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: I wish I could remember because it was, I'm not kidding,
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: the beginning of October and it went like wildfire.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember.
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: And like, I don't know if women, then they started
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: looking at other stuff I had done. Like, they liked
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: Def Leppard and Journey. They looked at other stuff I
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: had done. And within a month, people were, comedy clubs
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: were calling my manager. We want her. Like, people must
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: have started calling. The comedy club's asking for me.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: So I didn't have an agent. Nobody wanted to represent me.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: We couldn't, my manager begged people to be my agent.
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: And I think he got somebody to be my agent
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: because he owed him a favor. Like people pass me
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: up and we're like, and I was selling out all
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: over the United States. And they were like, yeah, you know,
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: this mom, I don't know what, I don't know.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: Cause it's men. It's predominantly men. And even women agents
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: pass me up. Yeah. Well, that's true too. They don't
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: see it.
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: They don't see the value. I was going all over
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: the United States selling out. I had checks in a
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: backpack traveling. My husband's like, you're like a drug dealer.
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: You got all this money in your backpack. We didn't
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: even know. It had never happened to me. I did
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: not know how to even handle it. And I was doing,
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: first I was doing like one-nighters and I would sell
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: them out. But I think, Heather, that I hit a— I
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: know that I have gotten into a lane that.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Nobody else was in.
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: Yeah. It was like just middle-of-the-United-States women who've been raising children, and,
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: you know, I'm pretty clean. I mean, I, you know,
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: have innuendo and stuff, but I'm not— I' m a Christian, but
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: I'm not a Christian comedian. I'm a mainstream comedian who's
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: a believer. Yeah. So I'm pretty clean. But, you know,
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: I go to the edge. But, you know, nothing crazy.
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: You know, I talk about I prostituted myself to their
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: daddy for years so they could have nice shoes and stuff.
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: But I just have hit something that people, that was
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: a lane, like Jeff Foxworthy says to me, you know,
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: if you can get in a lane that nobody else
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: is in. And I think I did.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: He told you that? Uh-huh. Oh, that's great.
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: And it has just been crazy. And if you'd have
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: told me this was going to happen to me, because
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: in my idea of success, I really wanted to be Roseanne,
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: Ray Romano.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: Yeah, me too. All that.
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: And so for this to happen for me, I'm 57.
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: I got a grandbaby, another one on the way. Because
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: my new tour is called Just Getting Started Tour. Because
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: I feel like I'm just getting started. And in my life,
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: at this time in my life, And it's been wonderful.
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: So the first tour was called the Big Panty Tour.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: We had a ball, talked about my panties. Women brought panties,
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: threw panties at me, just like I was Tom Jones.
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: I did 100 cities.
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: Now, when you did all these cities, like, does the
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: husband come?
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: What is his role?
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: A lot of husbands come.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: No, your husband.
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: Oh, no. He's still working like a mule. Providing health
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: insurance for us.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: No.
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: If I go to the Wynn or somewhere like that,
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: he wants to go and play blackjack or if there's
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: somewhere to play golf. But no, he stays at home.
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: And my husband only, only if he comes, he always
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: books like all the hotels and stuff. And then what,
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: and then all of a sudden he'll come and I'll
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: be like, oh my God, like this hotel is so nice.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: How did we get such an, and then I realized
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: it's because he's coming.
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: Yeah. So he's booking like the nicest hotel room or
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: not the nicest, but nicest for me. And, um, but yeah,
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: like if it's, yeah, if it's, you know, going to.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: Be kind of some fun or whatever.
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: They're dating. I hate to say this in front of them,
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: but when he does travel with me, he acts like
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: it's our honeymoon and makes me do, you know, be
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: it all night. And I'm too tired and I've got
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: to get on a pair of Spanx and my eyelashes and,
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: and he's holding on to me and I'm trying to
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: get ready and I'm breaking out in a sweat over
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: my lip.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: But he's got a lot of testosterone.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: That's good.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: So it's just too hard for me. I've got a world.
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: Yeah, that's why you just have to be smarter about
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: how you do it. And that's why I feel that, too,
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: like in doing tours, like to be smarter about, okay,
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: what's not going to exhaust me, you know? And sometimes
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: when you've been kind of like selfless and you haven't
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: always had the money, you're, you know, I finally was like,
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: we need to book a professional driver to pick me
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: up from the airport. I'm not going to drag my
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: bags to the Uber lot and wait for the cheapest Uber.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: And that took a long time for me to do that. Yeah.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: To finally go.
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: And I don't do that all the time. I don't
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: get a driver all the time. I still kind of
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: drag some stuff out to the Uber thing. But like
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: if it's, if I'm in a big city and I'm scared,
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: like if I'm in New York, they get me a driver.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: Yeah. And I pay for that. Of course. It's so expensive.
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: And it's hard for me because I've got Chuck Morgan.
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: Their daddy has always been a saver and has been
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: so stable. And see, I was the dreamer and I
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: was like, oh, and he's the one that's been like
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: saving for our retirement. Got a 401k.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: Same with my husband.
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: Yeah. So when I would be out with Southern Front Chicks,
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: for instance, they would say, let's go to Panera for breakfast.
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: And I had Chuck Morgan in my ear going, eat
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: that continental breakfast. That's free. So I would be there
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: eating an old muffin.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: So my husband would go, he would call me in
- 1:07:42Speaker 5: the morning. And wake me up because we're three hours ahead.
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: I mean, he's from East Coast. So he'd call me
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: like at 930. And that means he set his alarm
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: at 630 to call me to say, I got you
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: a free breakfast. It's going to expire at 10.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: So will you please? And I'm like, oh, like, no.
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: And just recently have I been like, I still will
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: take advantage of a free breakfast who can't. And I
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: have stolen like an orange and stuff.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: I have too. I've always got something that's put in
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: my purse.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. And like in the green room, like the
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: snacks and stuff. Yeah. Oh, all the waters. The waters
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: in the green room.
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: I take the waters.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: I take all the waters in the Diet Cokes and yeah.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: I do too.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: I do too, Hannah.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: And I still take leftovers and stuff.
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: And my kids are like, mom, if you, they got
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: so mad at me about the leftovers thing.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: And then my sister, same thing.
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: And so now I've said, I will only do now
- 1:08:42Speaker 5: leftover if it's like a really good pasta or a steak.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: That's it now.
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: Because those, I think, do last the next day. But
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: I mean, I would take every fucking, and I still do.
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: It's still hard for me to. And I'm like, Heather,
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: I was with my son in Mexico and I got
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: the buffet and.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: I, couldn't finish the... No, no, no.
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: I ordered a lox and avocado like toast and I
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: couldn't finish it. And I took it in the bag
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: to the beach where it's hot, getting hotter.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: And then we moved... To a different pet, to a
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: different lounge chair. And I carried it with me. And
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: my son is like, whoa, I can smell that fish.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: I'm going to throw up.
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: I'm like, I'm looking at the avocados are brown and
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: I go, God.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: But, you know, it was like $ 28. I know.
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: And I'm like, throw it.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Away, you loser. Throw it away. I know.
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: I do the same thing, Heather. I do the same thing.
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: And when I started this big panty tour, you know,
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: I have a writer and they have stuff back there,
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: fruit and cheese and all. So the guy that they
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: put with me with Outback Concerts, he started bringing Ziploc
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: bags for me so that I could then take it
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: and put it in the hotel refrigerator and then get
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: up the next morning and eat that cheese and that fruit.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: I did that.
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: And then I got to think, like the people that
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: work the whatever in the theaters, I think wanting to
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: eat that stuff. And we're like, you know, I think
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: getting angry.
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: Well, then I realized that I realized because then Peter
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: goes through the contracts, my husband and he, so now
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: we're like, don't be getting me a tray for $ 200
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: that comes out of my final net.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: I will eat before I come. All I need is
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: some waters. Yeah.
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: And how much are you going to charge for those waters?
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: Because otherwise, I'll bring my, like, there's all those, like,
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: hidden fees that you, like, didn't know.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: This is getting boring. Okay, listen. I have another question.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: Your girls are here. Your daughters are here.
- 1:10:44Speaker 5: And was there ever a time where the girls were like,
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: I don't like that you told that story on stage
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: or anything like that?
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: No, they've never said anything to me. My boy, when
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: he was in, I think he was in fifth or
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: sixth grade, he was going through puberty. and i was
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: on local radio in knoxville and on wivk and probably
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: couldn't i mean i was i don't even know what
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: i was on there for i guess because i'm the
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: only comedian out of knoxville and they used to have
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: me on all the anyway i was telling about him
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: having like one little arm hair under this armpit but
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: not under this one something and his voice was changing
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: and um He was already in school. They were already
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: in class. One of his friends went to the orthodontist
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: and was riding home, riding to school with his mom
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: after his orthodontist appointment and went in and told Charlie,
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: your mom's talking about your puberty on WIVK. And he
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: said to me after school, don't ever say anything like
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: that again. And I felt terrible. And I went, I won't.
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: I promise. So when they were in middle school, I
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: tell everybody that was a dry time for me. You know,
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: middle school is a hard time for everybody. And I
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: knew that they didn't. They were very self-conscious. And they
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: didn't want me to say anything. I guess I really
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: wasn't working that much when y'all were in middle school.
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: Because that was what y'all were in. I was with
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: Southern Fried Cheeks when y'all were in elementary. And on
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: Nick at Night when y'all were in elementary. And then
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: middle school, I think I could barely get arrested. Nobody cared.
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: And then when they were in high school, they were like,
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: we don't care what you do. Like, you know, they
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: were over me.
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: I think that's really important. Because, like, I've talked about
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: a lot about this, about... a lot of people exposing
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: every moment of their life because they're like TikTok influencer
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: moms or whatever. And there's a big movement of like,
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: these kids don't have any say in it. You would,
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: if you were on a sitcom, you don't, you know,
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: how much you're exposed or whatever. But the same thing
- 1:12:38Speaker 5: goes with talking about your kids on stage or writing
- 1:12:40Speaker 5: them out on a.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: Book or whatever.
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: And I did talk about my kids in my special,
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: but I always told my kids, you can't see my
- 1:12:49Speaker 5: standup till you're 16.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: And they're like, why?
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: I go, because at 16, you won't care. And so then, yeah, they.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: Never saw what I said.
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: Because, like, if I tell a story about my son
- 1:13:03Speaker 5: crying about his, you know, Hot Wheels car that, you know,
- 1:13:07Speaker 5: fell in the toilet with a big poo, like, I
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: think that's really funny, but if he hears me tell that, like,
- 1:13:13Speaker 5: and he was only eight, and he was eight at
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: the time, like, it's that.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: It's like they don't get it. And, like, Recently, my son.
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: Told me, like, you know, yeah, that would have been
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: really hard if you were, like, a housewife or something
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: while I was in middle school because kids see everything
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: and say everything. And especially, like, in Hollywood and how
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: much people are sharing about their kids, I do think
- 1:13:36Speaker 5: it's something to be kind of conscious of.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: The age, you know? Yeah.
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: Like, talk about the 2-year-old whatever and talk about the 20-year-old.
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: But it is that age that, oh, my God, and
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: especially if another kid hears about it.
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: Oh, it was awful, and I never did it again.
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: And the only time– and then, you know, now they're like, oh,
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: my gosh, Mom, tell it. We don't care. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: Don't you? Y'all don't– they don't care.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: Okay, but my husband, one time when I first got started,
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: I have breast implants that are old, and they've calcified,
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: and I need to get them out. But I'm breastfed
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: all these three children. Yeah. And I had to do
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: something because I nursed all those babies and they looked
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: so bad. And I still had life left in me. Anyway,
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: I got these breast implants, but I started comedy before
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: I got the breast implants. And I said on stage
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: something about I'd get breast implants, but it's been a
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: bad mobile home year. And my husband said, heard it
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: and said, don't you ever say that again. He said,
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: you know that I've always taken care of you. I
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: could write a check for those breast implants right now.
- 1:14:43Speaker 4: And he said, because he, you know, he's been a
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: wonderful provider.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: And that's his job. And he takes it very seriously.
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: And he said, don't ever say that I cannot provide
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: for you because I can. And I was like, I
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: was just saying, it's been a bad mobile home year.
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: You know, it's like back then it was like $ 3, 000
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: to get a breast implant surgery. But anyway, I said,
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: I won't. I'll never say that again. And I've never
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: said anything like that again. Yeah. And I got those.
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: Then he wrote a check for my breast implants. And
- 1:15:10Speaker 4: now they're old and calcified. And he goes, nothing's wrong
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: with those. And I go, yeah. I mean, they're, you know,
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: 20 years old and 20-something years old. And they got
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: to come out. And he's like, you know, he doesn't
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: like to spend money. He's like, oh, good Lord. You
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: don't need any new ones. I go, I really don't
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: want any new ones, Chuck. They're calcified. They're getting hard.
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: They're huge.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: You know, I hate them. Whatever the doctor says, you know.
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: He said I needed them out. Okay. He said I
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: need them out. I would mess.
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: With that if the doctor says it.
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: Yeah, he goes, with the skin, I think you need
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: to put a small one back in.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: I didn't want to put anything in.
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: He goes, I think you're going to need to put
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: a small one in because it'll be a horror if
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: you don't. But anyway, I don't have time.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: I don't have time to do that. I don't know
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: when I'm ever going to do that.
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: But I think that's, you know, I think that's interesting. And,
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: you know, speaking of Roseanne, you know.
- 1:15:55Speaker 5: Yeah, I did meet her son. He had a radio
- 1:15:58Speaker 5: show and I was on it like years ago. And
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: I did ask him the same type of things. How
- 1:16:02Speaker 5: did you ever feel about your mom like talking about you, whatever.
- 1:16:05Speaker 5: And he said something great. He's like, well, it wasn't
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: like my mom was out going to clubs and drinking.
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: She was doing stand-up.
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: So they all turned out okay and everything was fine?
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know what all the kids are doing.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: I know she just did a special.
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: So I know there's, like, there's the three and then
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: she had the youngest with, like, the, you know, the
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: husband after Tom Arnold.
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: But, I mean, the three older ones, the two girls
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: and the boy, I mean, they must be, you know,
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: in their 40s by now.
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: But I don't know what they do, but I'd love
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: to know, like, you know.
- 1:16:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: But, yeah, that's, you know, it's interesting.
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: And I wanted to get more in because I was like,
- 1:16:42Speaker 5: then you went from, like, whatever, being so middle class
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: is so rich. What could that have been like for kids,
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: you know?
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: Oh, I know.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: And then in the tabloids and, like, all that tabloid
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: stuff that, like, you know, you and I never had
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: all that tabloid stuff.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: Oh, I know.
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: And Tom Arnold, all that.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Do the girls.
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: when you meet new people, is it ever like, no way,
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: that's your mom?
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: Or what is that like?
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: Hey, this is Maggie, middle child. Yeah, I mean, oftentimes
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: if it comes, I look a lot like my mom.
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: And so a lot of times now people will say,
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: I feel like I know you.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Do they see you on her Instagram or anything?
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: My kids get recognized from that too.
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: Yes, exactly.
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: So that happens a lot pretty locally. But yeah, I mean,
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: if it ever comes up, I mean, I've been all
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: over traveling in the u.s and somehow it's come up
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: and people are like no way there's no way and
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: then they always ask how what was it like having
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: a mom that's a comedian does your do your kids
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: get that and what do you say i'm like it's
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: the best i mean she was i mean always mom
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: first so she's funny but i feel like it was
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: just the same i don't think i even realized she
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: was a comedian until like people talked about her being
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: a comedian and i knew it was unusual but it
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: was the same as her working at target you know
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: what i mean like she didn't talk about comedy i
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: don't think we talked about it till i was maybe
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: in high school yeah I mean, Nick.
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: At night came and filmed y'all and all that, but
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: it was when y'all were babies.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: But I was, like, seven.
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: You know, I knew people came and filmed, but I never,
- 1:18:07Speaker 3: I don't think I quite understood what it was or
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: how unusual it was.
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: Plus, we were living in Knoxville. It's not like we
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: were in L.A., you know?
- 1:18:15Speaker 5: When you go and, like, go out to eat, like,
- 1:18:17Speaker 5: while you're here, like, will you get recognized?
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: And what is that like for you guys?
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I think at first, when we were growing up,
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: because she was the only comedian, she In Knoxville, there
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: would be some local fans, you know, that would have
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: heard her at a breast cancer awareness thing or heard
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: her on the radio. But now everywhere we go, I'd
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: say every single place we go, she gets recognized. And
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: at first I thought, oh, my gosh, I'd get butterflies
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: and feel like I was getting recognized. And now it's
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: kind of become the normal.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: But it's so sweet.
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: Her fans are so sweet and see. in her exactly
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: what we see, you know, and how special she is.
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: So I think it just.
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh. It's so sweet. Today's her birthday. She's 27.
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: That's why she's here with me this week. So cute.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: If I knew I'd be on camera, I wish I
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: would have worn something else.
- 1:19:05Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: Well, tell everybody where they can.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: You have a special out. We're coming out.
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: Netflix, April the 11th. I'm Every Woman is what it's called.
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: And then I'm on my new tour, just getting started tour.

- 1:19:25Speaker 4: We're about to announce the fall dates. Great. Yeah. And
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: it's fun. And I'm having a good time. And I'm
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: doing some small arenas.
- 1:19:36Speaker 5: Wow, that's amazing. I'm so happy for you.
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: Thank you, Heather.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: I mean, I just think it's every day, I think,
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: what in the world is about to happen now? And
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: my book that's coming out in 2024 is called What
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: in the World? Because I just feel like, I mean,
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: every day is just a miracle of things that are happening.
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: And even though I felt like this, it feels right
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: to me. I knew something was going to happen. But
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: I just didn't know it was going to be this.
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: And it's so much sweeter and better than what I imagined.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: Because I'm in front of these women every night. And
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: husbands are with them, but it's a majority of women.
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: But I look out there and I think, you know what?
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: I'd be best friends with all of them in every town.
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: I think, oh my gosh, they're mine. We would have
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: a ball.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: We'd go to Jazzercise. Yeah. We'd have a ball. Leanne,
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: I have to go.
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: Darn it. And there's so much I want to talk about.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: Well, let's hang out more. This has been amazing.
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: I would love it, Heather. You angel from heaven.
