Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Vincent McAviney: Europe Correspondent on the sentencing of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And Vincent Mecaveny joins me now from Europe. Morning.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Vincent, good morning.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Former French president Nicholas Psychosi has been seen since to
- 0:09Speaker 1: five years in jazz. Is this the third conviction? There
- 0:11Speaker 1: were two previous ones for corruption, weren't there?
- 0:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. He's had a pretty checkered pass since
- 0:18Speaker 2: he left office. He was, of course a president of
- 0:21Speaker 2: France prior to the Francis Holans and he was sentenced
- 0:31Speaker 2: now to five years in jail. So he's going from
- 0:33Speaker 2: the Elise Palace to jail. And this is in a
- 0:37Speaker 2: case relating to millions of euros of illicit funds from
- 0:41Speaker 2: the late Libyan leader, Colonel Wuanmerga Daffy. Now there wasn't
- 0:45Speaker 2: a charge, there wasn't a successful conviction of sort of
- 0:49Speaker 2: having the campaign finances themselves. This is all about a
- 0:52Speaker 2: conspiracy to get money out of Libya for his election campaigning.
- 0:58Speaker 2: He was president two thousand and seven to twelve, so
- 1:00Speaker 2: quite a while ago now, But this case has worked
- 1:02Speaker 2: its way through the French justice system and in exchange,
- 1:05Speaker 2: he was reportedly going to help sort of wash Gadaffi's
- 1:08Speaker 2: international reputation. He was a pariah at this point. And
- 1:12Speaker 2: he reacted pretty strongly in court, taking down the justice
- 1:16Speaker 2: system and being very affronted and quite shocked, it seemed,
- 1:19Speaker 2: at the fact that he is actually going to have
- 1:21Speaker 2: to spend time in prison. His wife, the supermodel Carla Brunei,
- 1:25Speaker 2: was standing next to him, also looking fairly shell shocked
- 1:28Speaker 2: by it.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Do you think he will have to spend five years
- 1:31Speaker 1: in prison?
- 1:33Speaker 2: I don't know if he will spell in the full
- 1:35Speaker 2: five years, but I think it's very likely he is
- 1:37Speaker 2: going to appeal against this, but he is going to
- 1:41Speaker 2: have to spend a couple of years, it seems, in
- 1:43Speaker 2: prison until potentially the result of that appeal.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Then's it, Maca. Then, thank you so much for the update.
