- 1:03it's time now for today's episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. It's The
- 1:08Meg's Palace Matter, Parts three and four from Hollywood. It's time now for
- 1:19Johnny Dollar. Oh listen, it's after midnight and I don't feel it.
- 1:26Tim beat me. I want to talk to you, Oh the ohs A
- 1:30very uncoperative mayor chief of police in general do nothing in this town? No
- 1:34you just a minute. I asked you for help this afternoon and finding out
- 1:37who's threatening to put Meg McCarthy in a restaurant out of business? What do
- 1:41I get? A snide warning from you that the people of cond Harbor don't
- 1:44want outsiders messing in their affairs. Well, I don't believe it if you
- 1:48listen to me, And why want you here? A little while ago when
- 1:51somebody slugged me, what who do you think? Pick you up in that
- 1:55alley and put you to bed at makes place? You you want to come
- 1:57over here and talk to me? Now? I know it's okay, Beasley.
- 2:01If my head stopped spinning long enough, I'll be right over tonight and
- 2:13every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the
- 2:16Action Packed Expenser COUD America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigators, Truly Johnny Dollar. From
- 2:36Special Investigator Johnny Dollar. Location, Cod Harbor, Massachusetts, the Inner Coastal
- 2:40Maritime and Life Insurance Company, Boston Assignment, the Makes Palace Matter expense account
- 2:46continued expense account. Well, so far here in Cod Harbor, there's been
- 2:52a little need for it. Make mccarthy'd given me a small room above a
- 2:54restaurant and provided all the food I could eat. My own two feet were
- 2:59the only means of transferation. The only shops were along the waterfront that they
- 3:02were suppliers to. The boats tied up the various docks, and a motley
- 3:06lot of boats they were. Some were big schooners dating back to the last
- 3:09century and still carrying sail. There were power boats of all shapes and sorts
- 3:14and sizes, from eighteen footer is with one lung gasoline engines the big sixty
- 3:17and seventy foot diesel jobs. Trouble of the sword I'd come to investigate seemed
- 3:23out of place in this otherwise peaceful little village. Come in, Dollar,
- 3:34So you have suffered a change her heart, obviously, and you've decided to
- 3:37go operate. Yeah, that's about the best way to put it. I
- 3:39guess she's wait before we go any further. What was this bit about picking
- 3:44me up after I got socked on the head a while ago. Listen,
- 3:46mister Dollar, after you left here this afternoon, I got to thinking maybe
- 3:51I was wrong in giving you the back of my hand, and maybe you
- 3:53was right, and walking out mad like you did, Well, how did
- 3:57you feel the insurance company back in Hyford, it's word from Meg McCarthy that
- 4:00somebody's threatening to burn up that joint on the waterfront. She calls a restaurant.
- 4:04It's insured for fifteen thousand dollars and she's insured for twenty five. I
- 4:08know, I know, well, you see, it's this way. And
- 4:10when I get here, I learned that somebody has already tried a couple of
- 4:13times to set fire to the place. All right, all right, I
- 4:15learned a long time ago. And in a case like this, it's smart
- 4:18to enlist the help of the local authorities here in Cod Harbor. Those authorities
- 4:24all seem to boil down to you. Why I will never know? Yeah,
- 4:28like I told you, And what do I get from you? The
- 4:30cold shoulder, the back of your hand as you put. I got to
- 4:33explain to you, mister Donald, And then go ahead and explain, and
- 4:35believe me, brother, I'd better be good. Well, they probably ain't
- 4:40another village like this in the whole country, see technically, or we're supposed
- 4:45to be part of Barnsboro, a few miles inland. But we've always left
- 4:48them alone, and they've always left us alone. Any trouble happens, you
- 4:53settled it amongst ourselves. And because we're such a small place, it's getting
- 4:58along with everybody you're get out. See. So we just don't have no
- 5:00trouble, not of any account, that is, unless it's somebody comes in
- 5:04from outside and makes it for us. You understand, mister Dollar. Are
- 5:10you forgetting it was one of your own towns people who asked me to come
- 5:13here and for her own protection. That's what I got to thinking about after
- 5:16you left. So I decided maybe I better talk to you. And wow,
- 5:21that's how I happened to go over to Meg's place tonight. Was that
- 5:26you I saw in the shadows up at the front door. Yes, I
- 5:29was waiting for Captain Billy Morgan and his crew to finish cleaning up the place
- 5:32for Meg, and I was going to go in and talk to you.
- 5:35And that's the truth, mister Dollar. Come on, well, I just
- 5:40got there when I heard a noise out at the side of the cafe,
- 5:43like a fight. Of course, it was dark, there was no fighting.
- 5:46Somebody came out the side door behind me and knock me on the head.
- 5:48Yeah, So I took you up and put you on your bed and
- 5:51give you time to get your senses back and then telephone to you. You
- 5:58sure it was you out at the front of the cafe. Oh no,
- 6:00mister Dolly. You trying to implicate maybe it was me to give you a
- 6:03Balayan pin over their head? Was that what hit me Beasley a Balayan pin
- 6:09Wow, wow, something hit you? And Niger Okay, okay, I'll
- 6:13take your word it wasn't you. For the time being, I swear mister
- 6:16Dollar by all. All right, then listen, Yeah, I heard that
- 6:19side door open just before I started seeing stars. Huh. Yeah. That
- 6:24means whoever struck me must have come from inside the cafe. Say, yeah,
- 6:29yeah, that's right. The only people inside were Captain Morgan and the
- 6:30crew of his fishing boat. You sure, I'm sure because I was in
- 6:34there myself just a minute before, just Billy Morgan. And there's three men.
- 6:39Where was May? She's gone up to bed. I just stepped outside
- 6:42for breath of air. Holy uh, holy Jensen first May. Yeah,
- 6:46I heard Captain Billy call one of Molly his name's Jensen. Huh. And
- 6:49then there's Charlie Charlie Buttons a deck Hanne and Montgomery the engineer. Well,
- 6:56no, no, not one of them could have done it. Isn't that
- 6:59like saying I didn't get hit one of must have done it. No,
- 7:02sir, mister Dolley just couldn't make any sense. Oh, I tell me
- 7:05this, Are any of them related to the guys who run the other cafes
- 7:10along the wharf. No, no, but you are, aren't you Busney?
- 7:15Huh to Clem Harris at the silver plate or is it the recy plate?
- 7:18Anyway, here's your cousin, isn't he? I told you that?
- 7:21But if you think he had an all right, now, I don't know
- 7:24what I think. Let me tell you this. If you have suffered this
- 7:28big change of heart, it's about time you started proving it. I'll do
- 7:30anything you say, mister down all right, Meg seems to think the threats
- 7:34and attempts to burn down her place came from her competitors. Well I know
- 7:38she does. But show in a couple of hours, I'm taking off of
- 7:41the fishing banks with Captain Morgan and his crew. Maybe I'll be able to
- 7:44spot which of his men laid me out in the alley if it was one
- 7:46of them. Meantime, you see, if you can dig up anything that
- 7:49would put a finger at the other cafe owners, that means Ernie at the
- 7:53manor house, Tony who runs Irving's chopped. So we joined and your cousin
- 7:57Clem Harris. Okay, mister Dollry, I'll do it. Hey. By
- 8:00the way, did you ever check their handwriting against the letters make received well.
- 8:05No, I never quite got around to it. I don't think you
- 8:07ever got around to doing anything. It's such an easy job. I'll do
- 8:11it. Get the letters from Meg and check them. Yes, sure,
- 8:15I'm going to try to get a couple hours sleep before we take off on
- 8:18the lily hand. Yes. Sure, the big lazy slob. The first
- 8:22time I met him, he'd actually boasted about his soft job, about how
- 8:26nicely he could live in the town without having to lift a finger. Oh
- 8:30sure, the sudden change of heart may have been genuine, but I wouldn't
- 8:33have bet on it, and I still had no proof. It wasn't he
- 8:37who slept me, and one of Meg's rival eateries was run by his cousin.
- 8:41But then everything indicated that whoever struck me had come from inside her own
- 8:46cafe. So I decided it was more important than ever that I go on
- 8:50the next day's fishing trip. Back in my room on the second floor of
- 8:52Meg's palace, I fell asleep. The mint of my head hit the pillow,
- 8:56and I could have sworn it was only a second later that mm hmmm,
- 9:05who is it? Time to get up and out? What do you
- 9:07think it is? You're going out with the boys. Just get them,
- 9:13lazy bone. It's still pitch dark, bad are for the age time he
- 9:20was up. Here's the light for you. Turn that thing off. Now
- 9:26here's some coffee. Take a sorcery or to choke yet that strong? But
- 9:30in a way, Johnny boy, what happened to you? Just what it
- 9:37looks like? Your head? Somebody just got real friendly with a bullion pin.
- 9:41Right after you want to bed, they come up here and attacked.
- 9:43No, I was outside by the side. Who overdone that too, Johnny
- 9:48boy? So help me to find out who'd done that. I'm sure you
- 9:52want to get up and go out to the banks. Maybe No, No,
- 9:56I'll be all right. And I think it's pretty important I go out
- 9:58with ket and Billy and his boys because I have a sneaking suspicion one of
- 10:03them may have done this. Why the dirty knife? And oh no,
- 10:09Johnny, I must be wrong. Oh don't you know, darling, that's
- 10:13the finest growthman in all of Cod Harbor. I'm not so sure. But
- 10:16then you you mean you think one of them could also be behind trying to
- 10:20burden me down and maybe me with it. You can be mighty sure.
- 10:22I'm going to try to find out. Oh, Johnny boy, I pray
- 10:26that you're thinking wrong. Anyhow, If you're going with them, well open
- 10:33out with you the time here in your clothes. I'll have some grits on
- 10:35the table for you, eggs and pork chops and donuts and jack. I'm
- 10:43at the crew with the Lilande at that breakfast breakfast. Considering the amount of
- 10:46food set before them and the way they piled into it, you'd think those
- 10:50four men had need for a month. And I must confess there was nothing
- 10:54about them that looked like cause for suspicion. First it was Charlie at tall,
- 10:58brown eyed, young fellow, alert and pleasant, with a sense of
- 11:01humor, and he was obviously liked by the others. I think you just
- 11:07got the dreaming about some nice, pretty gallant. When you reached out and
- 11:09tried to grab her, you fell out of bed, and that's the way
- 11:11you got banged up. Montgomery a bit older, the man who was responsible
- 11:16for the engines on the board, gray haired, lean, worrying with narrow
- 11:20fingers that looked clumsy, and somehow never made a clumsy move, whose blue
- 11:24eyes looked straight at you when he spoke. Don't you believe? And you
- 11:26can blow me down, mister Dollar. If that like the most dastedly thing
- 11:30I ever heard of here in card Arbor, you best stack close. That's
- 11:33that your friends whilst you're here, I said, friends are made McCarthy baby
- 11:37friends as then Alie Jensen, first mate, the oldest member of the crew,
- 11:41quiet calm and official, the soft spoken one. It's not for me
- 11:46to inclare why you hear that business you're about, mister Dollar, and they
- 11:50don't. But I'm certain it's for the good and any hope that we can
- 11:54give you. You're welcome, sir, and I say the different. With
- 11:58all this chitter and chatter, when there's three should see for you to catch
- 12:01your lazy love churts. Get up from that table and get to work.
- 12:03By the time the suns up the kitchen up here. Within a few minutes
- 12:13we cast off and the Lily Ann put to sea. Slowly. The lights
- 12:18of the little village disappeared after the moon had gone down, and our only
- 12:22company out in the dark water was the twinkling stars and the occasional running lights
- 12:24from the other boats sitting out for the fishing banks. Captain Billy Morgan stood
- 12:28at the wheel. Montgomery sat athwart the engine cover and occasionally made some slight
- 12:33adjustment or indicated the change of throttle to the captain Young Charlie, and only
- 12:37made ready the two small boats and trap lines. For today we'd go for
- 12:41codfish in the deep that lay along the edge of Taylor Banks. I stood
- 12:46alone up in the bows, looking over the curling wash as it scattered the
- 12:48myriad microscopic beams and gave a soft phosphorescent blow to the water gliding past.
- 12:54And I wondered, I wondered why there had to be trouble in this world
- 12:58where honest labor by men could do so much more. Honest men, nah,
- 13:03not even among this crew. One of them had to be the man
- 13:07who'd attacked me, was probably the one who had threatened to burn make McCarthy
- 13:11out of business. So I better have it. I better get back af
- 13:16talk with them, watch their every move, try somehow to trap one of
- 13:18them into saying something that would give them away, or maybe who knows,
- 13:24give all of them away. And above all watched my step. There was
- 13:28a long way back to shore, and the darkness and the sound of the
- 13:33engines could all too easily cover up an untwort act by one of them.
- 13:37It did before I could lift my head, a powerful pair of arms that
- 13:41picked me up bodily and dropped me overside. In the brief moment that I
- 13:48remember, I felt the strong tug from the big propellers as the water closed
- 13:50over me. Then a terrible glow against my side, and nothing. Now
- 14:15here's our star to tell you about tomorrow's episode of this week's story. Tomorrow,
- 14:20the motives for arsen and murder begin to take definite shape in the form
- 14:24of a confession. Join us, won't you yours truly, Johnny Dollar?
- 14:41Yours truly Johnny Dollar is starrying. Bob Bailey is transcribed in Hollywood. It
- 14:46is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone, who also wrote this week's story.
- 14:52Be sure to join us tomorrow night at the same time in station for the
- 14:54next exciting episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. By Rowan, speaking from Hollywood.
- 15:46It's time now for Honey Dollar, doctor Lionel Champion. Here, mister
- 15:52Dollar. I'm surprised mc McCarthy didn't answer. I ordered her to keep you
- 15:58in bed there at her place until I could see you again. I am
- 16:00in bed, and I take it to the doctor who bandies me up this
- 16:03way, put on this splendid that's right after I tangle with a propeller at
- 16:06Captain Morgan's fishing boat this morning, Yes, only it was yesterday. Hum
- 16:11hm, you were unconscious when the captain and his men brought you in.
- 16:14After treating you, I gave you sedation. Oh, rest was the most
- 16:17important thing. How did you ever happen to fall off that boat? Doctor?
- 16:22I was pushed tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the transcribed
- 16:33Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account, America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance
- 16:40Investigator, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar from Special Investigator Johnny Dollar. Location,
- 16:56Cod Harbor, Massachusetts, the Inner Coastal Maritime and Life Insurance Company, Boston
- 17:03assignment. The Meg's Palace matter report, an expense account continued. As soon
- 17:12as I hung up on Doctor Champion, I again checked the splint on my
- 17:15right leg and confirmed the suspicion that I couldn't possibly walk on it. Then
- 17:19a few minutes later Mg McCarthy came into my room. She carried a tray
- 17:22filled with enough food to choke a horse, and while I piled into it,
- 17:26she brought me up to day. It's in Barnsborough. The doctor Champion
- 17:29has his office, and lucky it was for you. He happened to be
- 17:32here in Cod Harbor and his weekly is that. Oh you were a sorry
- 17:36looking mess when the man brought you in yesterday. The doctor said, you've
- 17:38been out as cold as a cod fish ever since, but he can tell
- 17:42by the looks that the rest has done a lot for you. On your
- 17:45feet, no matter of fact, Meg, I feel pretty well, pretty
- 17:48good there. You see. You've got to take it easy, like the
- 17:52doctor said, just lather, undressed and sleep. And it told the good
- 17:56food I bring you. Yeah, accept And unless I get up and going
- 17:59on, you'll try that and I'll lash you to the bedpost doctor's orders is
- 18:03doctor's ordists. So don't you try nothing different. Yes'm, it's a miracle.
- 18:08Praise be that that propeller on the lily and didn't cut you to ribbons.
- 18:12Captain Billy and his crew brought me back here. Who else where are
- 18:15they now? Fishing out on the banks? Of course, what did you
- 18:18expect? Don't you know they have to earn a living, the same as
- 18:22me and you? And what about keeping up the payments on that seaging bathtub?
- 18:26Precious little time they had for fishing yesterday after that fool trick you've fallen
- 18:30off over? Is that what they told you happened? Of course? What
- 18:33else? Meg? Which of the men told you I'd fallen off the port?
- 18:38All of them? Only the first mate, young Charlie Montgomery, the
- 18:41engineer, and of course my Willy by hisself, Captain Morgan for you,
- 18:45And they all told it the same way. What why not should we after
- 18:48making up fairy tales? How did they tell it? You're sure that screw
- 18:53didn't hit you on the head too, you lost your memory? How did
- 18:57they tell it? Meg? It's important. Well, whilst they went about
- 19:00their toures, you were standing alone up in the bows. They'd heard you
- 19:04yell despite of the darkness they see in you splash and the fast prescent wake,
- 19:08and there you were being sucked under by the prop And they all told
- 19:14it the same, exactly the same, even you, Charlie Buttons kept saying
- 19:18it over and over. I saw it. I saw it all like well,
- 19:23you know, like he was still struck with the fear of what might
- 19:26have happened to you? I wonder, Well, stop wondering and get yourself
- 19:32some more sleeper. The doctor will have me head, and if he does,
- 19:34I'll take it out on you. And believe me, Johnny boy,
- 19:37that will be a lot worse than the full accident was. Listen to me,
- 19:41it was no accident. What I was thrown overboard, Oh Johnny boy,
- 19:45your raven, delirious sort of your head. I was leaning over the
- 19:49rail, watching the water, and a powerful pair of arms belonging to somebody
- 19:52aboard that boat picked me up and tossed me over Saints Oh, Olie Jensen,
- 19:57Young Charlie Buttons, Montgomery, Captain Billy himself. Yes, that travin
- 20:02Johnny, you must have got hit on the head. And I'll bet my
- 20:03last bucket whoever did it is the same one who slugg me in the alley,
- 20:07the same one who's threatened to burn you out of this place. He
- 20:08Oh no, the minute I get up out of this bed, tell me
- 20:12something. Yes, Tim Beasley, you're a police chief in Mayor and so
- 20:15on. Yes, as even up here to see you, that good for
- 20:18nothing blurthers guy to know. And what's more, if he shows his ugly
- 20:22face in my establishment. I'll toss him out and his beamans which idea ask?
- 20:27Because I told him to get the threatening notes from you check them against
- 20:30the handwriting up several people here in kott Harbor who like that snivvellant cousin of
- 20:34his, Clym Harris, that runs the Silver Plate Cafe. Well, he
- 20:37ain't been here and I won't have him here. I take it you and
- 20:41he don't get along. Of course we don't, because ever since his cousin
- 20:45Clem has been in business, Tim is threatened to close me up for what
- 20:48reason, to break in town ordinances on restaurants the Kindian forces over to Barnesburrow.
- 20:53Well have you been breaking them no more than no less than dear cousin
- 20:56Climmer twenty fourteen or Ernie Tourner does after they're harsh joints. But me he
- 21:02always is picking on. And why because I get most of the business from
- 21:06the fishermen. So you want to suspect in this case, Johnny boy even
- 21:10ain't enough for me, Megan, the other cafe owners all right, So
- 21:12he'll give you one. Tim Beasley and Clem Harris working in cahotes and if
- 21:18it wasn't one of them, way, lady, And oh wait a minute,
- 21:22neither of them could have been aboard the lily inne then you must have
- 21:23fell. Oh Megan, when is the doctor coming to see me? You
- 21:26should be here by now. If he doesn't come pretty soon, I'm getting
- 21:30up and going Orderers and orders. Johnny WELLTIF suspects why Meg McCarthy yourself could
- 21:38have rigged this whole thing, called me in as a cover up while she
- 21:41burned up her place to collect fifteen thousand insurance, even her intended Captain Billy
- 21:47Morgan, who'd collect her life insurance as she were to die in a fire.
- 21:51Tim Beasley lazy slam of a general fact totament, Cod Harbor to put
- 21:55Meg's palace out of business in behalf of his cousin, Clem Harris, or
- 21:57Clem himself one of Captain Billy's crew. For some reason, I had neet
- 22:02fathomed. Half an hour later, Doctor Champion arrived look me over, and
- 22:06then went to work with a pair of bandage shares. So no, we'll
- 22:10take off that splint. Oh but if something's broken, Doc, not a
- 22:14thing broken, mister Dollar, just an old trick of mine. Ah,
- 22:18you needed absolute rest until I could see you again. And from what I've
- 22:22heard about you, you wouldn't have taken it unless I fooled you into it,
- 22:26and that was the sole reason for the splint tak here. I wonder,
- 22:32there we are, and in view of your surprisingly good condition, I'd
- 22:36say you may be up and a round as soon as you honestly feel able,
- 22:38say even tomorrow. Perhaps I had them eight ten dollars for medical services
- 22:47all the doctor Champion would accept. Needles to say. As soon as he
- 22:51left, I planned to get up and get to work. But as he
- 22:53walked out the door, Make brought Captain Billy and a visit and cimpathize,
- 22:57so in hope of keeping him off guard, I played real sick. Then
- 23:00only a Montgomery came in too. But I needed to get these men alone,
- 23:04and I must admit being feeling better than I did. Then I realized
- 23:08that young Charlie hadn't gone. I asked about him, Johnny. He said,
- 23:12as long as the doctor was keeping in bed two three days, he
- 23:15could see you when he gets back. But wait a minute. You went
- 23:18to pick up some supplies for Meg here, like he always does. It
- 23:21gives him a chance to drop in on his sister where he keeps his Sunday
- 23:25clothing things. He wasn't out on the boat with you today. Ah,
- 23:27Meg spoils the lad that way, always has him going in for supplies when
- 23:30I need him the most. Look here now, Willie boy, you talk
- 23:33like I was the one picked today. Of course didn't. And don't you
- 23:37tell me he said it. You're off your course your wife. Do you
- 23:47want mister Rollard off you? Oh Johnny boy, I'm sorry, Sup,
- 23:59It's okay, And tell me I'm sorry if I seem to be raising my
- 24:03voice. Oh bless you megas that fiery spirit that keeps me loving you.
- 24:07But now, why don't we leave the poor man alone to recover? Huh?
- 24:11Come on, yes, come on out your after you make right Montgomery.
- 24:18Wait, mister Donner, I'm not do for you to ease your bed
- 24:22of Pain'll drink you something of a bottle of board the lily. No,
- 24:26no thanks, I want to talk to you about you. A real fine
- 24:30lady is I'm sure he'd be wanting to see you. And he gets back
- 24:33from his visit in no, no wait, Captain Morgan said he has a
- 24:37sister in Barnsborough. Do you know the address that I do? Many's a
- 24:41foreigner. We've had from her on all time. Off. Well, I
- 24:44want to see her, you know, just a little personal thing. Then
- 24:48right down the address for you. She lives in a pretty little lass.
- 24:52And maybe Montgomery was the wrong one. I don't know, but I had
- 25:02to gamble somewhere along the line, and if my suspicions about Charlie Buttons was
- 25:06right, I hoped that wouldn't be too late. When Montgomery had left,
- 25:08I sneaked out the back door to avoid Meg and hurried over to Tim Beesley's
- 25:11office in the shack that functioned as Cott Harbor City Hall. He wasn't there.
- 25:17A woman who lived next door informed me he'd taken off in a hurry
- 25:18to Barnsboro. So Beasley had gone to town after Charlie, or had he
- 25:26by twenty five dollars that's had him nine. I rented a creeky old truck
- 25:27and headed for Barnsborough. Charlie's sister's house was on a gravel road out on
- 25:36the edge of town. There was no other car there, so I stopped
- 25:38in front of the place, got out and walked up to the front door.
- 25:55Sorry, mister, but my sister, mister Donald, Oh, Charlie,
- 26:02Yeah, I meant to say, why did you come in? You're
- 26:06glad to see you're all right, mister Donal, I am. That sure
- 26:10was awful. You're falling off the boat that way. It's a matter of
- 26:14Charlie. Aren't you feeling good? Yeah? Sure, sure I am.
- 26:18You look a little pale, and say, where where packing up to leave?
- 26:26Huh? Yeah, Well I'm tired of the fishing business, mister Dollar,
- 26:30going to give it up because somewhere else during a living tired of Yeah,
- 26:37why did you do it? Charlie? Huh, I don't know what
- 26:40you mean. It took somebody who knew that boat pretty well to sneak up
- 26:42on me in the dark and push me overboard. Took a strong young pair
- 26:48of arms to do it, too, yours, weren't they? Well,
- 26:56I didn't want to do it, mister don So help me. I didn't
- 26:59want to. Who made you? He found out? He found out about
- 27:03me? About my record? What record? That I killed the man once
- 27:07accidentally when I was just a kid, and I'd run out and escape from
- 27:10the reformatory. But now I'm grown. If they ever catch me, they'll
- 27:14hang me or the electric chair up for life. And he knew that,
- 27:17Charlie. If I didn't do anything he said, like slugging you or trying
- 27:21to start the fires or anything, he'd give me away. So I had
- 27:23to, don't you see, I couldn't help myself. He made me do
- 27:26everything, Charlie. Hold Charlie, it's all right. You don't need to
- 27:32rough me up. Dollar. I knew i'd get caught up with some day.
- 27:37I'll go quiet with you, and maybe maybe you'll help it to try
- 27:41and get things easy for me. Charlie, who made you try to kill
- 27:45me? Yeah? Yeah, it was so we could get you out of
- 27:52the way and burn up Meg's palace and her with it. I'll tell you,
- 27:56mister Dollar, it would there at the window behind you, that old
- 28:03trick. Oh no you. The boy fell against me, pinning me to
- 28:08the floor, and as I pushed him away, I saw the patch of
- 28:11red slowly spreading on the front of his shirt, directly above the heart.
- 28:17By the time I got to the window, a car had taken off down
- 28:18the old gravel road and was completely obscured by a thick cloud of dust,
- 28:23and I wondered. I wondered for whom the shot that killed Charlie had really
- 28:27been intended. Now here's our star to tell you about the final episode of

- 30:18Well, I've a good idea who did it now? But that may
- 30:21also just be me remembering, or I could be from when I've heard this
- 30:23before. But an interesting case, some pretty good characterization, and a lot
- 30:30of dialogue dialects, excuse me. The only one that really didn't work I
- 30:36think was the only one. But they may also have been trying to avoid
- 30:41overdoing it, which often happens in old time radio programs where the attempt to
- 30:48do that accident just goes totally over the top. I also love the cliffhanger
- 30:53for part three. It was kind of a shame the way we set the
- 30:56show up that we go right into part four at any rate. Onto the
- 31:03listener comments and feedback, and have this from Arthur, who actually I mentioned
- 31:11him as supporting the show on Tuesday but forgot to read his message. He
- 31:18says, we listen every night, so thanks for the podcast and also says
- 31:23bought your book from my Kindle. I read it and kudos to you.
- 31:27Well, thanks so much, Arthur. Really do appreciate the comment and appreciate
- 31:34everyone who supports the show and also people who purchase and enjoy the various books
- 31:41we have out there for the Kendle. All right, well, that will
- 31:45do it for today. We will be back with you on Thursday with Nick
- 31:48Carter, and then we will wrap this case up on Friday, so be
- 31:52sure and listen to that. In the meantime, send your comments to Box
