- 1:53into today's episode of Yours truly Johnny Dollar. It's The Tears of Night Matter,
- 1:59Parts one and two from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar.
- 2:07This is Hillary Fukes, CPA. You left word for me to call,
- 2:10mister Dollar. I don't seem to recall a name. I'm with Universal Adjusters.
- 2:15They asked me to look into this Windover claim. Universal Legit Insurance Adjusters.
- 2:19That's right Insurance. I understand you filed the claim in Missus Windover's name.
- 2:23Missus Wendover hired me to handle her affairs a few days ago. Who
- 2:27do you want to talk to me or missus Wendover, anybody who can make
- 2:30me understand why Missus Wendover let a fifty thousand dollar policy lie around for two
- 2:34years before she filed a claim. I'll try. I don't know whether I
- 2:37can convince you or not, but I'll try. Good Night and every weekday
- 2:46night. Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action packed
- 2:51expense accout America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator Gars Truley. Johnny Dollar expense account submitted
- 3:09by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Universal Adjustment Bureau, five eighteen Spearit Boulevard,
- 3:15Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation
- 3:19of the Tears of Night Matter. Expense account Item one ninety two dollars and
- 3:24fifty cents air fair and it. So that's Hartford to Miami Beach, Florida.
- 3:29My plane got in at eleven PM, so I went to a hotel,
- 3:30I got some sleep. I put in a call to Hillary Fuchs,
- 3:34certified Public Accountant as soon as I woke up. Then I had some breakfast
- 3:38and took a cab out to his office. It was a pleasant four mile
- 3:40trip along a beautiful white sanded ocean front, and it cost me at him
- 3:44two three bucks even coome on in here. Dollar the air conditioners working here.
- 3:49Hillary Fuchs was a big man in his late forties. He was semibald,
- 3:52had a good sunburn, and smell faintly of Scotch whiskey. The office
- 3:55he led me into was cool and dark and elegantly furnished in bamboos. The
- 4:00desk was cluttered with a stack of financial statements of legal papers. This is
- 4:05quite a thing, I guess, Dollar. By the way, I didn't
- 4:09find any Universal Insurance adjustice and the phone book well located in Hartford, Connecticut.
- 4:13Hartford, you're a long way from home, Dollar, They sent you
- 4:16all the way to Miami Beach. About this, yep, seems like a
- 4:19pretty expensive way to handle it. Pretty expensive claim fifty thousand dollars. Would
- 4:25it do any good to tell you it's legitimate? Sure, but I'm hired
- 4:28to check it out just the same. In other words, you don't believe
- 4:30me, Well, look at it our way, mister Feuchs. The claim
- 4:32came into the office day before yesterday, and we have seventy two hours to
- 4:35act on it. Okay, what can I do? First off? Tell
- 4:40me your connection with missus Windover. She hired me to put her business affairs
- 4:44in order about ten days ago. First time I ever saw she said the
- 4:46Treasury Department that advised her to get some expert help. They were honor about
- 4:50back taxes. And that's it. I see. Tell me about Noah went
- 4:55Over's death. He died two years ago, last April fourteenth, the way
- 5:00it's just coming to me. Did you people, I mean, did the
- 5:03insurance company know anything about him being dead until that claim came in? No,
- 5:09no wonder they sent you all away from Hartford. Well, Wendover and
- 5:14his wife took a party of eight out on their boat for a ten day
- 5:16cruise. Went Over had an attack of appendicitis at sea. There wasn't a
- 5:20doctor aboard. The appendix burst, and he died before they could make the
- 5:24nearest port. Let me get back to the original question, why all this
- 5:29time before Missus Wendover filed claimed for benefits? Well, you really got to
- 5:32know missus Wendover. I guess she's a little crazy, little wacky, a
- 5:35little strange. These are your impressions of her. It's a consensus. I
- 5:40asked her around after she came here the other day. The story is that
- 5:44she and went Over had a pretty good thing in their marriage. They were
- 5:46wild about each other. They spent money like water, and they had plenty
- 5:49of it to spend. Then one day he died. Kind of threw her.
- 5:54Maybe you'd still throwing her item sure, Somewhere along the line. In
- 5:58the last year, missus Wendo met somebody else. I don't know who he
- 6:01is because I wasn't paying any attention when she mentioned his name. But she's
- 6:06sort of coming out of it and she's going to marry him, so she
- 6:10wants to get her business affairs in order. From the look of things,
- 6:13nobody's done much about them since went Over's death. You see all that stuff
- 6:16in the desk, Yeah, I noticed it. It's all hers. She
- 6:19brought it to me in three big hat boxes. Stocks, bonds, bills,
- 6:23deeds. I don't know what all. I know she's in a little
- 6:26trouble with the government, not because she hasn't got the money to pay them,
- 6:29but just because she hasn't bothered with anything like that. Anyhow. One
- 6:32of the first things I came across was the insurance policy thrown in there with
- 6:36all the rest of the stuff. And look you see these checks, almost
- 6:42ninety thousand dollars dividends on some oil stock. Doesn't even bothered open her mail
- 6:46of Casher checks. Well, a lot of people around the country, including
- 6:50your insurance company, are going to be startled. When I finished straightening all
- 6:54this out, I sent the policy claim in as a matter of course,
- 6:58that's my explanation for being two years late. Oh, that's a pretty good
- 7:02explanation. Look here, she completely forgot. You loaned an eight thousand dollars
- 7:08automobile to a friend in Tampa fourteen months ago. I asked her about it,
- 7:11and she said she thought she'd left the filling station for it. And
- 7:14here the boat went over died on worth sixty thousand dollars. She sold it
- 7:17to a fisherman last year for five pounds. Yeah. I get the idea,
- 7:20mister Fuchs. Yeah, so you will file the insurance claim in her
- 7:25name, along with a dozen other matters that should have been taken care of
- 7:27two years ago. Yeah you played golf. No, well I do,
- 7:30and I'm tired of looking at this pile of stuff. Mind if I look
- 7:33at it, I help yourself all yours. I'll be at the club.
- 7:38Do whatever you have to. By the way, what do you have to
- 7:41do? Verify this death certificate in the coroner's report. Then you will honor
- 7:46the claim. I'll file my report and it's up to the insurance company to
- 7:48do as they see fit. You got a cagy, aren't you. That's
- 7:51why they pay me, Oh, mister Fuchs. Yeah, is there's some
- 7:59kind of bank balance and this stuff current. You'll find it there, but
- 8:01I'll tell you in cash, missus Wendover's worth about nine hundred and fifty thousand
- 8:05dollars. I doubt very much if she's trying to cheat the insurance company out
- 8:09of fifty thousand, you can ever tell, though, Keny, mister Fuchs,
- 8:13O can't ever tell. After he left, I got on the telephone
- 8:22and talked to officials about the Karnis autopsy and the death certification on Noah Wendover.
- 8:26They all seem to be an order. Then I went through the papers
- 8:30on fuchs disk. They seem to be in enough disorder to verify what he
- 8:33told me about at least Windover. I left fuchs office about four thirty and
- 8:37went back to my hotel carrying a picture of a woman who had existed in
- 8:41a state of limbo for two years or more. So far as responsibility and
- 8:45attention to business went, Johnny Dollar, Hillary Fuchs, can you come over
- 8:52to my office right away? I just left there. What's up missus Wendover.
- 8:56She's having a fit. Come on over, Expenser, con Adam three
- 9:05three more bucks more cavfair Back to Hillary Fuchs office I put up in front.
- 9:09At exactly five thirty, I noticed a nineteen fifty six white Cadillac convertible
- 9:13parked in front for no reason at all. I took thirty seconds to peek
- 9:16inside. The registration told me the car belonged to Alie Blair Wendover. She
- 9:20had left her purse on the seat and the keys in the ignition a mink
- 9:24stole was thrown carelessly over the back of the seat. Anybody could have taken
- 9:28a stole, the purse, the car, the hallworks. Missus Wendover was
- 9:31living up to her advanced notices. Come in. Fuchs looked pale and shaken.
- 9:37He fumbled around for a cigarette until I handed him one of mine.
- 9:41He lit it up and tried to get a grip on himself. Missus Wendover's
- 9:45in there, Oh, what happened? I had some papers for her to
- 9:48sign, and she dropped in a little while ago. Uh. I told
- 9:52her about you. I explained to her it was certainly reasonable the insurance company
- 9:56would want to investigate a claim that had been delayed twenty five months. She
- 10:00blew up, got kind of hysterical about it, said she wanted to see
- 10:03you right away. That she had something to tell you. Go easy on
- 10:07her, William. Why do you say that, Oh, it's just well.
- 10:11If I'm wrong about her, I'm glad, but I don't think I'm
- 10:16wrong when I say she's right on the edge, just on the edge of
- 10:20it. Feeling better, Missus Wendover. The pale girl with the coal black
- 10:28hair, seated stiffly in a chair in front of Hilary Fuch's desk was not
- 10:31feeling better here. She could have been sixteen or thirty six. It depended
- 10:37on where you were standing when you looked at her. She had a mouth
- 10:39that was too full, shoulders too wide for the strapless sundress, Paris sandal's,
- 10:45a clanking costume bracelet, and black eyes around big bright, too bright.
- 10:50This is mister dollar, Missus Wendover. I understand you're investigating my husband's
- 10:54death. I'm here to verify the facts so that Eastern States can act her
- 11:00your claim. Don't you believe he's dead? Yes? Don't you? Oh?
- 11:05Yes, I saw him die. Yes, he's dead. How much
- 11:09money do you owe me? The claim is for fifty thousand dollars. Will
- 11:13you pay it? I presume it will be paid from all I've seen so
- 11:18far. Of course, that part of it's up to the insurance company,
- 11:20of course, And they have men sitting at desks reading reports about claims all
- 11:26day long. Yes, my dad owned an insurance company once. You know
- 11:33those men sitting at their desks. Even my dad set at a desk.
- 11:37I wonder something, would one of those men sitting at one of those desks,
- 11:43right, okay, on my claim for Noah's benefits, if he knew
- 11:46about me? Sit down, Missus Wendover. Maybe you'd like a drink?
- 11:50You have one, mister Fuchs, would they? Well? I have to
- 11:52be indefinite about that too, Missus Wendover. What would put a question in
- 11:58the mind of an adjuster if he knew about you? I'm indolent and I'm
- 12:01irresponsible. Mister Feuchs can tell you that I'm not quite dependable, am I,
- 12:05mister Fuchs. Oh, we're getting straightened out, Missus Wendover. And
- 12:09then, of course that wouldn't make a difference, I mean not really.
- 12:13A great many are responsible, indolent, undependable people, while there's something else.
- 12:22I'm a curse, are you. Oh yes, it's a very bad
- 12:26thing. A curse people around me, people I love just seem to die.
- 12:35Why do you think you're a curse? Noah died and I loved him,
- 12:39and Daddy I loved him and my brother Jim all dead. No one
- 12:43can stay alive around me. I thought I should tell you that. Yeah,
- 12:48well, I appreciate it, missus. Windover well, and we don't
- 12:52have anything more to discuss. Goodbye, mister dollars fus. Oh wait a
- 12:58time minute, Johnny, Hey, where are you going? I'm gonna drive
- 13:01her home. You are right, she's on the edge of something. I
- 13:03can't quite figure it yet. Brother was killed in Korea. Her father died
- 13:09of a heart attack ten years I got that much from the papers on your
- 13:11desk. Lord, would she ever get the idea? I don't know.
- 13:13I've heard of things like this happening. I'll find you later. Right,
- 13:20Wait a minute, I'll drive you home, missus my door. Oh that'll
- 13:28be nice. She smiled brightly, still too brightly, and we drove along.
- 13:37She didn't tell me which way to turn, what direction to go,
- 13:39and I didn't ask her. I liked it that way. No one's saying
- 13:41a word. I was listening to something else anyhow, something inside of me
- 13:45loud, like a cannon firing twice a second. It was my heart making
- 13:48all the noise. Oh, it's happened a couple of times before, and
- 13:52I met trouble coming home. I knew it's my heart. Never makes a
- 13:54mistake. Mister Dollar. Do you think he'll die too, Johnny Dollar,
- 14:20you'll refukes Dollar. How's missus wendover? So far, so good? Yeah,
- 14:26sure, she's in the other room. Do you think she's all right
- 14:28mentally? I mean, I think she's all right enough to get by.
- 14:33I think she's scared to death of something or somebody. That business of the
- 14:35curse. Yeah, you know, there isn't anything to that. There's something
- 14:39to it for her. She thinks she's somehow responsible for her husband's death,
- 14:43for her father's death, and for her brother's death. On the way here,
- 14:46she mentioned just like that that someone else was going to die awards to
- 14:50that effect, I don't know. Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar
- 15:03to the Universal Adjustment Bureau, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting
- 15:07of expended yours during my investigation of the Tears of Night Matter. It had
- 15:16started as a routine investigation a claim file for fifty thousand dollars on the death
- 15:20of Noah wendover Miami Beach, Florida. The question why the two year delay
- 15:26in making claim? The answer turned out to be interesting. Briefly, it
- 15:30involved a distraught woman who had neglected not only in the insurance but everything else
- 15:33in her life for two years, A woman obsessed with the idea she was
- 15:37a curse. Do you like soda? Water? Soda? Prise? Thanks,
- 15:46cheers, good luck. What's your name again, Johnny Dollar? Oh?
- 15:58Yes, that's right. Mister Fuchs introduced us to me. Do you
- 16:03think he'll be able to straighten out all my business affairs for me? Yes?
- 16:07I think so. Missus went over, including the insurance, including the
- 16:10insurance. Yes, you're worried about the claim, aren't you. Well,
- 16:18I'm paid to worry about it. I'm not so worried now as when I
- 16:21first came to Miami Beach. I think I understand why it took all this
- 16:25time for the claim to be filed. You mean you've met me, and
- 16:27you think I'm kind of, you know, not all there or something.
- 16:33Well, I suppose mister Fuchs explained how badly I've managed things for the last
- 16:37two years. He showed me how you've let your affairs go to the devil.
- 16:40If that's what you mean, I'm glad you finally turned it all over
- 16:44to him. I think he'll take care of it for you. I behaved
- 16:47rather badly in mister Fuchs's office, didn't I. Well, I wouldn't say
- 16:48that. Poor mister Fuchs. He was frightened. I think I don't know
- 16:55what it is really. I mean, he mentioned that you were in town
- 16:59investigate my claim on Noah's death. I felt I should talk to you.
- 17:03That's why I had him call you. I wanted to tell you about the
- 17:06curse. There's no such thing, you know, missus Wendover. I know,
- 17:10I know. I couldn't have been responsible for Dad's death. It was
- 17:14a heart attack many years ago. It was a whit school in New York,
- 17:18and Jim my brother being killed in Korea. I couldn't have had anything
- 17:22to do with that. And Noah, Oh, I loved him very much.
- 17:29I'm not cursed, am I. No, No, you certainly aren't.
- 17:33All of these deaths around you have been tragic, doubly so because you
- 17:37seem to have been very fond of the people. But you aren't responsible in
- 17:40any way. I like you. You're very nice. If you have any
- 17:48questions you want to ask me about Noah, I'd be glad to answer them,
- 17:51I really would. I'm all right now, really, I am well.
- 17:56When we left mister Fuch's office, you talked a lot about that.
- 18:00Yes, I'm ashamed. Were you still thinking of that when you spoke to
- 18:03me in the car? Did I speak to you in the car? Yes?
- 18:10You know, I can't remember riding in the car at all. I've
- 18:17been standing here talking to you, and I've been wondering all this time how
- 18:19we got here? Do you mind if I help myself? Oh? We
- 18:26drove over together from Hillary Fuch's office. I drove you here. Oh.
- 18:33Oh, some things I just blank out. I've talked to a psychiatrist,
- 18:37you know. I mean, I've been under treatment for several months. He
- 18:41says. I established a strong pattern when Noah died, shutting things out of
- 18:45just forcing my mind to become blank. He's trying to help me get over
- 18:48it. What did I say in the car? You said you were cursed
- 18:53and you wondered if he would die? Oh, dear, who's he?
- 18:57Teddy Teddy, Teddy Davis. I'm going to marry him. When he asks
- 19:06me, and I know he will. I love him very much. Well,
- 19:08why do you think Teddy might die because of people dying around me that
- 19:14I love? He doesn't believe in the curse, does he? Oh?
- 19:17No, he's something like you in a way. Nice. He makes me
- 19:22laugh at it. He says it's ridiculous, because it is. Somehow I
- 19:26feel comfident. Now, look, you marry this fellow in the minute he
- 19:30asks you, and forget about being cursed and everything else. He'll take care
- 19:33of you. I better go now, mister, Yes, thank you.
- 19:42I need sometimes very much to talk to someone like you. Thank you,
- 19:49Jay Dollar oricle On. Go out and marry so and so and live happily
- 19:55ever after. I like the little kiss she made me. I like the
- 19:59way she squeezed had I liked to perfume she was wearing. I liked the
- 20:03way the intense heart brightness had gone out of her black eyes. And she
- 20:07was just a nice woman being a woman. I liked all that. What
- 20:11I didn't like was the idea that she could be the other way, believing
- 20:14in the curse and believing she was somehow responsible for people dying. When I
- 20:18left her, I knew that part wasn't ended. I knew it would come
- 20:21back. Come on in, Dolly. I sort of stuck around, wondering
- 20:26if you'd come back here? How is she? She's okay now, Fuus.
- 20:30I'm sending in my report on this policy tonight. I'm recommending they honor
- 20:33it. I've got enough verification. Okay, that's fine. Sure, appreciate
- 20:37your help on this, Dolly. Let me buy your dinner. No,
- 20:38no thanks, I'm getting the first plane back to Hartford. Why not wait
- 20:41until tomorrow. You've got a reason, haven't you. Yeah, I guess
- 20:48so, Missus Wendover. Oh, I've met people like her before. Don't
- 20:51ask me where or when, but I've seen him. And there isn't anything
- 20:53to a curse. But trouble seems to follow them. Big trouble is practically
- 21:00finished. I just want to get out and get away. Can I use
- 21:03your office for about an hour? Sare tell yours dollar? I feel the
- 21:10same way. I spent half an hour typing up my report on the windoverclaim,
- 21:15in another ten minutes on the phone asking for an airplane back to Hartford.
- 21:18They said they'd call me right back, and I poured myself some of
- 21:21Fuchs whiskey and sat down to stare out at the knights. Lights burned up
- 21:25and down the white beach. People strolled up and down looking at the water,
- 21:27holding hands, and I was sitting alone in Hillary Fuch's office waiting for
- 21:32a phone call and thinking about a curse. Hi, Hi, who are
- 21:41you anybody else? Ey? Oh? Why you were kind of late?
- 21:45So do you what's in your mind? You costa and want to see you
- 21:52right away. I'm supposed to take you over, whoever costing it is.
- 21:56Tell him he doesn't want me. You don't tell saying things like that.
- 22:03You know, it's been a long time since I shook in my boots when
- 22:04a skinny hood like you stood around acting tough. If you've got some business
- 22:08with Hillary Fuchs, look him up at his home. This is fuchs office
- 22:11here behind his desk. You'll do Come on, missed, then don't show
- 22:15me how loud to say. If I have public account and can growl,
- 22:18I just might swing this thing on your head. That's better. You got
- 22:25a hat? No. I know Costigan wants to talk to you, but
- 22:27I you like the belt? You one just for the practice. I'm not
- 22:30Hillary Fuchs. Come on, let's go you're gonna make my eart. I'd
- 22:34like to just for the practice. Now. Then it's Constigan. Is he
- 22:40the one for Chicago? Sam's been there? Answer the Sam Costagan kicked out
- 22:44of Chicago a few years ago? What does he want to see? Fuchs
- 22:47about it? Hit the wind Over Dame? What something about the wind Over
- 22:49Dame? I don't know what it is. He just wants to see you.
- 22:52Okay, what's your name? Frank Skellen? Here? You put this
- 22:56thing in your pocket, pull it out again in front of me and I'll
- 22:59brain you. Now let's go. Huh Now I want to see Sam.
- 23:03Shoot sure, anything you say? I followed Frank Scannon out of the building
- 23:10to a waiting car, a black package with side curtains. It was a
- 23:14nice touch for this day and age. But it didn't make much sense.
- 23:17None of it did. It was illogical in the beginning, middle, and
- 23:19end. Most of all, I didn't make much sense. I should have
- 23:22been in my room packing instead. I was on my way to see an
- 23:26old time grifter and hoodlum named Sam Costigan because someone had mentioned the name Windover.
- 23:32You want to smoke? I used my own suit yourself, fellow Scannon
- 23:37was a thin one with sharp narrowed eyes. Too much patting on the shoulders,
- 23:38too much, stamped at the brim of his hat, too much point
- 23:41to the toe of his shoes. The thirty eight had taken away from him
- 23:45and handed back me in a considerable bulge in the front of his coat.
- 23:48About six miles out of Miami Beach, he turned off the main highway onto
- 23:49a dirt road about a mile of that, and up ahead we saw lights.
- 23:53The lights became a fine old colonial mansion. Every room aglow. Two
- 23:56or three guards were watching the entrance to the front. They all needed shaves.
- 24:00No one said anything. Yeah, it's me Phelly. Oh this serious,
- 24:15Hilary Fuchs say, Sam wants to see him my name? How are
- 24:19you feeling, mister Pheeley. What kinds of punks are on now days?
- 24:25I wouldn't give frisky with him, I follows you guys are a pretty touchy
- 24:27fella. So yeah, I just wait. Come on. He led me
- 24:34into the main foyer or a hatshit girl with a lot of red hair stood
- 24:37ready for the evening's business, which hadn't begun yet. On the right what
- 24:41had been the dining room of the old house, was now a circular bar
- 24:44that could see twenty five or thirty to the left, and what had been
- 24:48the parlor and library. I counted two crap tables to relet tables, and
- 24:51two black jack stands. Beyond all this in a screen porch of five piece
- 24:55combo made music. A few tables and head waiters stood around looking forard.
- 25:00Scanner led me upstairs. We stopped in front of a wide white door mark
- 25:02Private. I thought he was gonna knock, and Steady whirled around very quickly
- 25:06and stuck the same old thirty eight about two inches into my ribs. Now,
- 25:08let's stand Steady pel e. Heyay, you giving your trouble, Frankie,
- 25:17Nah, I will Buster. I'll give you plenty of trouble if you
- 25:19want it. Here all he talks to me, I'll crack him up a
- 25:22little for you if you like. Frankie. Nah, you got business with
- 25:26Sam right now. We'll take care of our business with him later on.
- 25:29However you say it, Frankie, I just wanted you to remember that I
- 25:33will the same way I remember a dirty newspaper story. You know something I'm
- 25:42looking forward to you. Now, here's our star to tell you about tomorrow's
- 26:02intriguing episode of this week's story. Tomorrow, there is a curse that goes
- 26:06with a wind over name goes forever. It is john Us. Won't you
- 26:11Yours Truly? Johnny Dollar? Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, starring Bob Bailey,
- 26:34is transcribed in Hollywood, written by John Dawson. It is produced and directed
- 26:38by Jack Johnstone. Be sure and join us tomorrow night at same time in
- 26:44station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Roy Rowan speaking
- 27:22Welcome back, Well Johnny. I've never seen Johnny so eager to get out
- 27:30of town. I do also have an idea of where he's coming from.
- 27:33I don't get why he went ahead and gave the loaded gun back to the
- 27:37thuck. It seems like they could have emptied the gun and told him I'll
- 27:42give it to you after I see your boss. But that's just me.
- 27:48I don't have an action packed, expensive count, So we'll see how this
- 27:52works out. Join us on Wednesday for the next part in this series.
- 27:55Well, we do have some listener comments in feedback regarding john I'll go ahead
- 28:00and start out with William, who provides a thought on the silver Blue matter.
- 28:06William writes, I've really been enjoying the Silver Blue serial. One thing
- 28:11that bothers me about the story, though, is whoever does the voice of
- 28:15Lieutenant Garcia. He's attempt at Hispanic accent is horrible. It sounds more German
- 28:21than Hispanic. In fact, I'm certain I've heard this actor do German accents
- 28:25on other OTR programs. When I was listening to him interrogate the boy in
- 28:29episode four, I expected him to shout, tell us the formula, Okay,
- 28:33I probably not. My German accent is probably not any better than his
- 28:37Spanish accent, but it was not the best I've heard, but probably on
- 28:44par with most other attempts at Hispanic accent in old time radio without sounding two
- 28:52stereotypical. We also have an email from Paul says, I wonder if you've
- 29:00noticed a shift recently in Johnny Dollar script tiles style, specifically, episodes from
- 29:07about a month ago portrayed at Johnny Dollar, who was confident early in the
- 29:11show, even arrogant about who was the guilty party. It was sort of
- 29:15annoying the character browbeat suspects based on little evidence. The last few shows,
- 29:22for example, The Lonely hearts matter, Johnny Dollar was more ambivalent throughout the
- 29:27show until nearer the end. If this rings true, thoughts on reasons for
- 29:32the differences in style, It's tough to say. I will admit now that
- 29:37you mention it, that he hasn't gone on gone off in the same in
- 29:44the same way as he did at the start. The only big difference I've
- 29:48noted here is that towards the beginning there was more scripts that were adapted from
- 29:59E Jack Human thirty minute scripts. Though why that would lead to Johnny coming
- 30:06off as arrogant or just too sure of himself without any evidence, I'm not
- 30:15certain, because I've listened to many of these same E Jack Newman stories and
- 30:22you don't get that from you don't get that from most of these stories.
- 30:30This may have been a directive from Jack Johnstone. We'll have to see.
- 30:33Probably the best way to tell is if we see a series that does have
- 30:38him, or we start seeing a series of programs where he does start getting
- 30:44overly sure early on, That'll probably be more indicative as to what change may
- 30:49have occurred. I'd assume if it's something that's more or less permanent, that
- 30:55it was some directive from from Jack Johnson Stone, the producer and director,
- 31:03rather than anything specifically from the writers, but we'll see comment from iTunes review
- 31:11by biggest RCP fan. I know Adam likes to hear about younger listeners.
- 31:18I'm nineteen and listen to this daily. I've been a fan of the early
- 31:22hard boiled crime noir detective writers like Hammett and Chandler for a while now,
- 31:29but since I started college, I haven't had time to read extra books unrelated
- 31:33to school. This way, I will still fit in my fix of crime
- 31:37noir while doing dishes, but I'm almost caught up, not looking forward to
- 31:42having to wait for new episodes. I only listen to the Bob Bailey one,
- 31:47so I might have to check out the other ones. Also, speaking
- 31:51of crime noir, they steal from Hammon and Chandler, as well as film
- 31:56war movies in these all the time. The first Bob Bailey was almost the
- 32:01same story as Chandler's Farewell, My Lovely and Episode ten eighty nine steals chapter
- 32:07two of Hamlet's Red Harvest. Everything from rich and powerful, bedridden old man
- 32:14to the physical description of the assistant a threat to throw the detective out.
- 32:19The assistant knowing he's not strong enough to do so everything. Also, I'm
- 32:23a composer studying film scoring, and the music is fantastic. It's so great.
- 32:29The main theme is very dramatic, and there's lots of other great cues
- 32:32throughout, like the dreamy chromatic clarinet theme example in episode ten eighty nine at
- 32:42twenty two thirty. Keep it up, Adam, such high quality entertainment.
- 32:45I hope it never ends well. Thanks so much for the comments. A
- 32:49lot to talk about there. First of all, if you're really into hard
- 32:53boiled detectives and you've run out of this, there are two things I would
- 32:58definitely encourage you to take a listen to. First would be the Edmund O'Brien
- 33:04programs. O'Brien definitely very hard boiled, and you can enjoy all those episodes
- 33:08at Archives. Dont great detectives done at particularly the first couple ones. In
- 33:14addition, I would also call out Rogue's Gallery, Candy Mattson The Fat Man,
- 33:21Pete Kelly's Blues and Ideal and Crime to meet your hard boiled needs.
- 33:27I'd also recommend Pat Novak for hire, but we're going to be doing that
- 33:32on the main show. In a few months. Anyway, in regards to
- 33:38Chandler and Hammett, it's no doubt I wouldn't say that they necessary that they
- 33:45necessarily stole from Chandler and Hammett, what with some exceptions. I mean,
- 33:52we had one episode we played of Cases of Mister Ace where they just out
- 33:58and out ripped off the Maltese falcon. But you know, we're all influenced
- 34:05by those who have come before us, and certainly they inspired quite a bit.
- 34:12I think I could definitely see how the McCormick matter drew on Chandler's work,
- 34:20even though it went in a few different directions. And yeah, the
- 34:24music is great on this show. It was not quite as good in the
- 34:30previous incarnations of Johnny Dollar, but this theme is just it's just great.
- 34:35So thanks so much for listening, and I appreciate you being out there and
- 34:40all the best with your studies. All right, Well, that will do
- 34:44it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with the final American episode of the
- 34:50Amazing Mister Malone, and then we'll be back on Wednesday with the next part
- 34:57of the Tears of Night Matter in the Maintimes in your Calm to Box thirteen
