Transcript
- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is Teva K Rambles, where a couple of
- 0:20friends review Korean dramas. And for this episode, this
- 0:24season finale episode, I'm joined by Robin from K Drama
- 0:29Playbook on Instagram. How are you, Robin?
- 0:33I'm doing pretty good. Excited to chat Moon lovers?
- 0:37Yeah, I'm so glad that you're here.
- 0:39I asked you on for this episode all the way back in February.
- 0:44It's been many months since I asked you on and I just love
- 0:47your content on Instagram. I love your takes.
- 0:50I love your reviews. And I asked you to come on to
- 0:54review Scarlet, Hart, Rio, Moon Lovers.
- 0:57And you were like, trying to downplay.
- 1:00You were like, I don't think I'm the right person to, like, come
- 1:04on and do this show with you. You said, and this is your
- 1:07quote, I would probably crack a lot of puppet and assassin
- 1:10jokes. And I was like, you're hired.
- 1:15I was like, you definitely have to come on for sure.
- 1:19You're the perfect person to talk about moon lovers with.
- 1:21So the time has finally come. We are way late in the year, way
- 1:27far from February. But we're finally doing this.
- 1:30Why moon lovers? I will tell you guys.
- 1:35So I was there in 2016 when Moon Lovers first aired and I watched
- 1:40it was it was airing on DramaFever.
- 1:44And since then, the show has kind of taken on a life of its
- 1:49own. It's become extremely popular
- 1:51overseas. People sort of talk about it
- 1:53with reverential tones and they consider it one of the best K
- 1:58dramas of all time. And I was shocked people felt
- 2:03this way about the chefs. To completely show that you've
- 2:06heard. I've heard, yes.
- 2:10People have said, oh, this one was like the best K drama, my
- 2:13first K drama, whatever. And I was like, did we watch the
- 2:18same show? And so other than that, I wanted
- 2:24to also just do the show because people had requested that we do
- 2:29this show. So I was like, OK, cool, I need
- 2:31to return to the show at some point, Rewatch it.
- 2:34It's been many years. And what am I?
- 2:37Did I, I maybe I remembered it wrong.
- 2:40And I was like, no, let me just rewatch it, fresh eyes, and
- 2:44review it. So that's why we're here and
- 2:46we're going to talk Moon lovers Scarlet.
- 2:49Ha Rio. But before we do, if this is

- 3:56And we're going to get started on this.
- 3:58Are you ready, Robin? I am.
- 4:00I have never been more ready in my life.
- 4:02Oh shit. OK, so OK, the My Drama List
- 4:08synopsis for this show. I can't believe we're doing this
- 4:11OK. When a total eclipse of the sun
- 4:13takes place, Golhatan is transported back in time to the
- 4:18start of the Correo Dynasty of Korea.
- 4:22During King Tejo's rule, she wakes up in the body of the 16
- 4:26year old Hesu and finds herself living in the House of the 8th
- 4:28Prince Wang Wu, who is married to Hesu's cousin.
- 4:32She assumed a friend several of the Princess and meets the
- 4:34ostracized 4th Prince Wang. So although knowing she should
- 4:38not get involved in palace intrigues over the succession to
- 4:41the throne, she sorry. She inadvertently becomes a pawn
- 4:46in the struggle as several of the Princess fall in love with
- 4:50several of the Princess Just fall in love with her.
- 4:54Yeah, so this show aired from August to November 2016.
- 4:58So happy birthday moon lovers. We are recording this in the
- 5:01month of August, just the very tale end of August 2023.
- 5:06It is adapted from the novel Boo Boo Jing Scene from Tong Hua.
- 5:11It's a Chinese novel and it's based on the sea drama Scarlet
- 5:15Heart from 2011, which I watched two episodes of and you watched
- 5:19several episodes of as well, if I'm not mistaken, Robin.
- 5:23We will just circle back on that.
- 5:27And then Scarlett Hart Rio is 20 episodes long.
- 5:31It is directed by Kim Kite. Kim Kite is a male director and
- 5:36he's directed things like Worlds Within from 2008.
- 5:41Iris from O9 padam Padam That winter, the wind Blows.
- 5:45It's all right. This is Love, which I personally
- 5:48love. Our Blues from 2022, which made
- 5:52waves. And have you seen some of his
- 5:56work, Robin? Not a lot.
- 5:59I I also agree with you. I lots love.
- 6:02I did watch half of our Blues, but gave it up because I I know
- 6:06this is sacrilege, but I found it so heavy-handed and just I I
- 6:11wasn't. I wasn't able to really commit
- 6:13to it. OK, fair, fair.
- 6:16The Scarlet Hart Ria was written by Joel Yun John.
- 6:21I'm getting downside. Joel Yun Yong and they wrote
- 6:25Cinderella Man in the Killing Vote, among other things.
- 6:28Not very much on their resume. And then of course we got our
- 6:32cast, which is extensive. There is no way that I can
- 6:35mention every single person that's in this show.
- 6:37So I'm going to keep it to the top three billing, I would say.
- 6:41And so we have EDNAKAIU, the Fairy Princess herself as Jesus.
- 6:47You might have seen her in Hotel Del Luna, My Mr. The Producers,
- 6:51Dream High, The Movie Broker, which I really loved, and we
- 6:57have episodes on Dream High and My Mr. If you want to scroll
- 7:00back in your podcast for you to listen to those I you Have you
- 7:04seen a lot of IU shows, Robin? I've seen the producers, which I
- 7:09loved and I thought she was quite good in it.
- 7:12I also saw Broker and thought she was stellar.
- 7:15Yeah, yeah, she's amazing. I think she's a great actress.
- 7:18That iconic role, I guess, that she's most known for is the
- 7:21Hotel de Luno and which she was quite good.
- 7:25Yeah, yeah, I dropped Hotel du Luna after two episodes, but
- 7:29that's a different story. Egin G plays Wang solo, the 4th
- 7:33Prince, and he's been in a bunch of shows.
- 7:37My girl from 05:00 if to may out on in the magistrate a scholar
- 7:41who walks the night, which I think he was like a vampire in
- 7:44that Criminal Minds lawless lawyer, Flower of Evil which
- 7:48we've covered on the podcast And again My Life from 20/22.
- 7:53He I believe will star in the second season of Arthur Doll
- 8:00Chronicles which is one of the worst K dramas I've ever seen in
- 8:03my life. So good luck to E Jen Gee.
- 8:07What have you seen E Jen Gee in? I actually have seen him in
- 8:11nothing. What?
- 8:14For real? And my girl and the and that is
- 8:18because like. I felt like the haircut that he
- 8:21had in my girl was such a low point in my life.
- 8:24I couldn't break myself to watch him with another drama again.
- 8:28Like it still wants me. Like, I'm not kidding.
- 8:32I am so sorry. I didn't mean to like freak, but
- 8:37the hairstyle that he has in my girl, he plays the second male
- 8:41lead in my girl. It's pretty pretty obnoxious
- 8:46and. Wild it's doesn't didn't age
- 8:49well at all. OK wow.
- 8:51So that's sort of soured every single project after.
- 8:55Wow. My God.
- 8:56What it take. Wow.
- 8:58OK. Fair.
- 8:59Fair. It's it's haunting it it's
- 9:02pretty haunting. So to round out the cast that I
- 9:05will specifically talk about. Kanha Know plays Wang Wook, the
- 9:108th Prince, and he's been in shows like To the Beautiful You
- 9:14The Heirs When the Camellia Blooms.
- 9:17He's been in movies like 20, Empire of Lust and Midnight
- 9:20Runners. I really like Kangandul.
- 9:24I think he's a great actor. What have you seen him in?
- 9:29Lots of stuff, yeah. I really, really liked him in
- 9:3220. That's probably where I really
- 9:34sort of noticed him. I really liked him in like for
- 9:36likes. I think he's really versatile.
- 9:39He's quite funny, like he can play something like the Pirates,
- 9:42but then he's also kind of, he'd be kind of scary and.
- 9:45Like intense, I guess, in in sort of other things.
- 9:48So yeah, I'm a fan. Yeah.
- 9:50Yeah. I'm a huge fan of his.
- 9:51I think Empire of Empire of Lust from 2015 is a movie.
- 9:56And this was the movie that I thought, oh, he's like the devil
- 10:01because he played a rapist husband in a Charleston Dynasty
- 10:05period piece. And I was so frightening to see
- 10:09it because it was like, it was completely believable.
- 10:12It wasn't like, oh, it's Conga Knowle.
- 10:14Like I said, no, I was actually scared of him.
- 10:18And I was like, is this the same guy from, you know, XYZ and
- 10:22Midnight Runners in 20? He's he's so endearing in a lot
- 10:26of stuff and really funny and charismatic.
- 10:29And then in this movie I was like, I I was shook, you know
- 10:33what I'm saying? So Conga Knowle very versatile.
- 10:36I agree completely. And that is the end of the
- 10:41specific cast members that I'm going to talk about.
- 10:42This is extensive. You have Nam Do Hiok Becky on Ji
- 10:45Sue who since been canceled Kanhana so many cast members,
- 10:50not to mention the veteran actors who are in this show as
- 10:53well like Kim Sankyon whose reply in 1988 people remember
- 10:57him from there and so many more So or I'm, I'm so excited.
- 11:04But like, what did you think of Scarlet Hart Rio?
- 11:08I mean. I watched this at a time like
- 11:11like I watched it like you. I watched it live like when it
- 11:13was dropping like week after week.
- 11:15I tuned in like a sucker, just hoping it would get better as
- 11:21the weeks went on. Ohh being.
- 11:23Repeatedly being repeatedly, like sort of derailed it it it
- 11:29came out at a really important time, right?
- 11:31Like there were so many things that came out at that time.
- 11:34Cinderella and the four nights was coming out that shopping
- 11:37King Jealousy and Carnet with Joe Dunstuck.
- 11:40Like all of these shows were out at the same time and then
- 11:43obviously its main competition was we might drawn from the
- 11:46cloud. So like it was a time when it
- 11:49like there's just so much good content out.
- 11:52Yeah. And then this was just, you
- 11:55know, there amongst all of those really good shows.
- 12:00And those really great performances and you know, I
- 12:04like you kind of was like, this is a fun joke watch to you know,
- 12:08like lighten the mood after one week and you know, poke some fun
- 12:14at some of these sort of performances.
- 12:16Like it wasn't until much later like you that I realized ohh
- 12:20like people are into this and really taking it like seriously
- 12:25as like sort of some Korean withering heights.
- 12:30Like, take on the romance, you know?
- 12:33And so I I was sort of taken aback that I thought Oh well,
- 12:38maybe maybe I got it wrong. But then I realized that I, I I
- 12:42I didn't on the second watch. Although I probably would say
- 12:46that because I've been watching that it's probably not as bad as
- 12:51I may thought it was. In the midst of all those really
- 12:54good dramas, I yes, I agree with you.
- 12:58I watched this on DramaFever back in the day, and I watched
- 13:02it as it was airing and I thought, this is sort of stupid
- 13:08like it was. I don't think it was a joke
- 13:11watch for me. But I was like, this doesn't
- 13:14make sense. Like the math isn't mathing for
- 13:16a lot of stuff. And I've said this before on the
- 13:18podcast, I'm a plot person. I don't care how many beautiful
- 13:21people you have in a show or like anything to that effect.
- 13:26If the plot isn't working for me, I think it's going to.
- 13:30I think the move, the whole thing sucks, you know?
- 13:32And I was like on the verge of that in 2016 where I was like
- 13:37this. I don't understand, like, how is
- 13:39she fitting in so well in this era, in the late 9 hundreds
- 13:47we're talking about here, the year?
- 13:50And she's from the 21st century and she seems to be doing just
- 13:54absolutely fine, like fit in very well with the time period.
- 13:59Knew how to make soaps and cosmetics from scratch.
- 14:04Like I was like, this is dumb as shit.
- 14:07Like this is the kind of stuff that like, I can't get behind it
- 14:10because it is just so ridiculous, I guess.
- 14:15And I love time travel stories. I love psychics and historicals
- 14:20as well. I am not opposed to that.
- 14:22I think that I wasn't. How do I put this?
- 14:26I wasn't a fan of the lonely damaged hero, which is a trope,
- 14:31right? Like you have this hero that
- 14:33he's got emotional scars and is has abandonment issues and his
- 14:38mommy issues and daddy issues and the female league swoops in
- 14:42and just understands him and they fall for this really
- 14:47problematic dude, the lonely damaged hero.
- 14:50And like in the process of watching this as it was airing,
- 14:55I was like, this is strange as well because they didn't have
- 14:58just one male lead, they had two.
- 15:02Like the show can be split into two and it feels like two
- 15:06different shows. Truly exactly, exactly.
- 15:09The plot and the characters I thought, were just increasingly
- 15:12unhinged. And because the show takes such
- 15:15a left turn, I remember feeling whiplash.
- 15:20Like I was like, Oh my God, what is going on here?
- 15:22Because it was very light and fluffy.
- 15:25A lot of forced comedy. I U is singing like what this
- 15:29is, This is not a huge deal, right?
- 15:32Then all of a sudden there's a left turn, a hard left turn in
- 15:36the plot and things start getting very serious and the
- 15:42tone changes for the show and people start like starting to
- 15:47act right like they got the memo or something.
- 15:49They're like you need to turn up because this isn't working like
- 15:53and it just felt really uneven and I was stunned.
- 16:00I remember feeling stunned, especially with the ending that
- 16:04people were. I think the in the consciousness
- 16:08people understand that Moon Lovers is a devastating show and
- 16:13doesn't have a happy ending. However, in the moment I was
- 16:17like, I just want to forget that's ever happened.
- 16:20I was like this is so odd and I was still reeling from the tonal
- 16:26shift and everything. Everyone in it is famous now.
- 16:31Literally everyone in it has a big career starting from now,
- 16:37like from 2016 onwards. Their trajectory has only gotten
- 16:41better, and it's like the origin story for so many actors.
- 16:45Some fantastic musical cues ground the story.
- 16:49The OST is just one of the most iconic and recognizable in K
- 16:52drama, period. I I believe that.
- 16:56And then the actual plot and the actual making of it was just so
- 17:02absurd. It's a great formula of actually
- 17:05well done and so unbelievable that you have to just keep
- 17:08watching. Yeah, I mean, so to me it was
- 17:13like kind of like a Titanic of K dramas, right?
- 17:17Like it was like, like they believed, I really do believe
- 17:21that somebody, whether it be the director or like the the
- 17:24production company or what have you really believed it was some
- 17:27sort of unsinkable ship. Like they had all of these like
- 17:30very sort of handsome sort of junior actors sort of cast in
- 17:35it. They had Lijungi, who was quite
- 17:37famous at the time. I U obviously like sort of
- 17:40holding down the central sort of in main of the of the drama and
- 17:44I think they just thought they couldn't fail and they
- 17:49prerecorded it, which was really unusual at the time.
- 17:53I think really only that year I think only Descendants of the
- 17:56Sun had done it before. You know, with a you know, with
- 17:59a much more dependable writer and director duo than this one
- 18:05to be honest. And you know, like.
- 18:08I think like, they just really thought they couldn't fail and
- 18:11then but just didn't see anything that happened coming,
- 18:16right, which is to be really put up against later on from the
- 18:20clouds, right, which launched Perkbom's career and so many
- 18:23other people's career as well and cast a lot of junior actors
- 18:27who, to be honest, gave a lot better, right.
- 18:30So I think there's like a bit of hubris within the way in which
- 18:34this plot sort of plays out and that like like I don't really
- 18:37know that. Sometimes there are moments
- 18:39where you're like, were they even trying?
- 18:45I feel you, like I feel you. I think we're on the same
- 18:47wavelength, Just the show, I guess.
- 18:52Do you feel the show was good? Is like the bottom line?
- 18:55I'm sure people want to know that.
- 18:58Is it good for you? I mean, there are other I I I
- 19:01watched it, you know? I finished it.
- 19:03And I finished it twice now. Which is more than I can say for
- 19:08a lot of shows, but it's not much to say.
- 19:11Like, it's not like a sort of a ringing endorsement, you know
- 19:14what I mean? Like, I don't know if I'd like,
- 19:16you know, recommend it, you know, 10 out of a 10 to a
- 19:20friend, you know? But I mean, like you said, I
- 19:23think that there are really sort of magical moments in it too.
- 19:27Like, there are some really, like, insane detail in the show
- 19:31that are really quite well done. And it's almost like I wish that
- 19:36those little details that like obviously a lot of time and care
- 19:41went into sort of developing and thinking about if they had just
- 19:45been like sort of tied together with like a much stronger cast
- 19:49and like better writer. You know, I'm nodding my head.
- 19:56Yeah, I'm following you. I think that, yeah, I agree with
- 20:00you. I agree because.
- 20:03The cast on paper is really good, but they're largely
- 20:06untested in 2016. Like, not.
- 20:09Juhik hadn't done Weightlifting fairy yet.
- 20:12That comes out the next couple of months after the show
- 20:15finishes airing. So like, when people were
- 20:17watching this, they were not. They had, they didn't have
- 20:20weightlifting fairy, they didn't have, obviously 2521, they
- 20:23didn't have The Bride of Habec, which is a travesty of a show.
- 20:26But you know, that's just one actor.
- 20:29All the rest beckyon from Exo. He had never acted before.
- 20:34This was his first acting credit and only acting credit.
- 20:39I'm being sarcastic. Of course he'd never fucking
- 20:41acted before. A lot of these people just were
- 20:48untested and the source material is quite dense.
- 20:52I would feel, I would, I would feel safe saying like the source
- 20:56material is pretty dense. It comes from if they followed
- 21:00very closely the broad strokes of the sea drama, Scarlet Heart
- 21:04and the sea drama's 35 episodes. So they condense that into 20
- 21:09episodes. And I think I felt it.
- 21:12I think I felt like the unevenness and the the way that
- 21:16they tried to expand some portions and then close the gap
- 21:21on other portions and it felt like the pacing was weird.
- 21:25And again, you're not given a very calm, even tone throughout.
- 21:32You are given that sort of slapstick Korean drama comedy
- 21:38style in the front half of the show, which lulls you into a
- 21:42false sense of of calm and confidence that the show is
- 21:46going to continue on this trajectory.
- 21:49And when it doesn't, when it takes that hard left turn and
- 21:53there's a bloodbath and things start going really wrong, I
- 21:57think people were surprised. I think the audience is still
- 22:01the collective, the zeitgeist is still traumatized by the latter
- 22:06half of this show and the ending especially.
- 22:10And does that make a good show? I don't.
- 22:13I don't think so. Well, I think it depends right.
- 22:15Like I mean I think that there are a lot of say goods that have
- 22:20that have that sort of three act format.
- 22:22We're like the beginning is much lighter and then the middle is
- 22:24where like then it sort of like I don't think that's.
- 22:27Totally off base. But there like you said there's
- 22:31a consistent right like there is and like you like there are
- 22:35really interesting aspects of this.
- 22:38The time slip the fish out of water story.
- 22:40The reverse harem. You know, like all of these sort
- 22:43of tropes are really recognizable and kind of fun.
- 22:46But like, you know, and not to. I know that we're not talking
- 22:50about spoilers, but like what? I guess my question would be.
- 22:54Which you probably already have an answer for is like, what
- 22:56happens to a character when all of its when all of the good plot
- 23:00points are sort of taken away by like episode 11, right?
- 23:06Yeah, a lot of some, not a lot. I would say a few characters
- 23:11feel completely superfluous and unnecessary to the story after
- 23:16episode 10 or 11, when that big turn happens.
- 23:21And what am I? That's, I feel like they didn't
- 23:24account for that in the writing, right?
- 23:27Because you never want a character to feel useless or
- 23:32like, what are they even doing here?
- 23:33What's their purpose? What's their arc?
- 23:36A lot of characters didn't have an arc necessarily, and it's.
- 23:41More like a flat, I find, I find, I find issue with that.
- 23:44You have a large ensemble cast and you're not giving jobs to
- 23:48everybody. You know, I think Li Junki is
- 23:52like, I, as much as I'm not necessarily a fan of him at all.
- 23:55Like he is someone I actually literally don't understand.
- 23:58In a lot of ways, he is fair. Have you ever seen that?
- 24:03Have you ever seen that like that miniseries?
- 24:05That American miniseries is like released in the 80s, I don't
- 24:09think. So, so it's like how like aliens
- 24:11come to sort of Earth and like they like under the auspices
- 24:16they want to share technology and stuff.
- 24:19With like human beings, but spoiler alert, they just want to
- 24:23enslave them and eventually eat them.
- 24:26And like, under. That's like a Twilight Zone
- 24:28episode. Yeah, it is pretty messed up,
- 24:33but like under their synthetics, like they look like us, like
- 24:37human beings, but like under their synthetic skin they have,
- 24:39they look like lizards. And that's the vibe I get from
- 24:44each junkie, right? Is that you think each junkie is
- 24:47a reptilian? Feel like he's like a synthetic
- 24:51skinned lizard man. You think he's an alien?
- 24:56Yeah, kind of. I just.
- 24:57He's just, he's like otherworldly.
- 25:00But as much as, like I feel, like wildly unattracted to him
- 25:04in any way, OK, I'm following. I'm following you.
- 25:10I do feel like I have to give him his flowers because he is
- 25:13working overtime in this drama. To hold it together at all, at
- 25:18all costs. And he's almost doing it, just
- 25:23not quite. I think that you're right.
- 25:28The acting rests solely on him and I you and to a certain
- 25:33extent, conga. No, Conga no gets sidelined the
- 25:36last like 10 episodes or so. So I He's taken off the playing
- 25:41board as far as the demands of his performance, right?
- 25:47But Isungi and I U are front and Center for the large, the
- 25:52largest part of the show, and they're carrying the show on
- 25:54their shoulders. And what's funny is that the
- 25:58people, like the audience and the critics had mixed thoughts
- 26:03about all of the performances after the premiere.
- 26:08And they thought that the adaptation, the soundtrack,
- 26:11photography, Agent Gees acting were all good.
- 26:14They were all praised. But then Beckham caught caught
- 26:17stray bullets, his performance received criticism and then
- 26:21ideon, which is I you. Her performance also received
- 26:24mixed reviews. Some critics thought that she
- 26:26was doing a good job seeing the nature of moon lovers, where the
- 26:30mood changes at every scene, which is a direct quote.
- 26:33While others believe that the director was at fault and that
- 26:37his trademark closeups revealed her lack of emotion.
- 26:41Which what a thing to say, right?
- 26:44That the way that she was shot was just sort of shining a
- 26:48spotlight on how lacking she was as an actress.
- 26:53And I think I'm somewhere in between, right?
- 26:56I don't think she was terrible. I thought she was really good.
- 26:59Was it the best that I've seen of I?
- 27:01U Probably not. But I really thought that she
- 27:05wasn't the weakest link and Ejungee also wasn't the weakest
- 27:10link in the show. And we all, I think the fans of
- 27:12Ejungee and the people who have seen some some of his
- 27:15performances, they think he's a great actor and I do too.
- 27:18I think he's a he's pretty great in this show.
- 27:21Maybe he's just given too much to do and his character's a
- 27:25little ridiculous. So it's it's it's hard because I
- 27:30want to like the show, but I can't is how I put it because I
- 27:37yeah, I just want to like it. And there were so many scenes,
- 27:40like you said, that were built right And they landed and I
- 27:45loved some of those scenes and we can get to those in the
- 27:49spoiler section. But on the whole, I was like,
- 27:52this isn't drawing me in. I'm just kind of going with the
- 27:56flow and it's not a binge for me and I never recommend moon
- 28:02lovers. Yeah, I mean, I think that,
- 28:08Yeah. I mean, I think that you're spot
- 28:09on. I think that like the first few
- 28:11episodes are actually pretty romantic.
- 28:15You know, I think that that there is that sort of romance
- 28:19that are sort of drawing through, especially between IU,
- 28:22right. And I like that he's supposed to
- 28:24be this virtuous Prince and he really isn't that much at all.
- 28:27He's kind of a little dirtbag. Yeah, we'll get into that in the
- 28:31spoiler section too. Right.
- 28:33Sorry but. I do think that I agree with
- 28:37you. I think that I use is a little
- 28:39bit. She's a bit uneven.
- 28:42Yeah, she's not that bad, but she's not that good, right?
- 28:46She's fine. She's just fine.
- 28:48And the series ended up not doing very well.
- 28:52In Korea. It averaged 7.6 ratings on
- 28:55Nielsen and 7.3 for TNMS. It was considered a failure for
- 29:01its performance below expectations, but it was a
- 29:04really good export. It did well in Malaysia, China,
- 29:08Taiwan, Singapore, and of course on DramaFever, which made it
- 29:11available in North and South America.
- 29:14It recorded more than two million views within the MID
- 29:17series. So that just goes to show how
- 29:20much that the Koreans were like washing their hands of the show.
- 29:24And it's supposed to be their history, right?
- 29:26Like this is based on like a a real king that existed in the
- 29:32history and like the Koreans were like, this isn't that great
- 29:35and they saw the flaws in it and for some reason it hit overseas.
- 29:40For some reason, people were really backing it in other
- 29:43countries, According to Yiwong from Yong Yong Hap News, the
- 29:49first part of the drama highlighted the love triangle of
- 29:52the main characters. While almost all conflicts
- 29:55stemmed from Queen Yu's pathological love for Wang Yu
- 29:58and her evil acts to make him king, thus making the entire
- 30:01drama too fragile, there were also doubts about the
- 30:05plausibility of the developments, such as the
- 30:07historical knowledge of the female lead and then Wang So
- 30:10Scar could be covered with makeup.
- 30:13And I completely 100% agree with that.
- 30:15Take from Iwong, who is a critic from Young Yonhap News and we
- 30:23can get into that. I guess a little more in the
- 30:25spoiler section as well. The I I don't want to talk about
- 30:30the ending. Did you have anything else to
- 30:33add before we just. I think we should just jump into
- 30:35spoilers, no? Yeah, I'm good.
- 30:38OK. What would you rate this show
- 30:40out of Fives Hojo bottles? I mean it's not unwashable.
- 30:46I would finish like I like I said I finished it twice and
- 30:50there are some like you know there are some positive there's
- 30:54I'd give it maybe same same. I was thinking when I because I
- 31:01had this old blog review up and I was like I don't know do I
- 31:04still feel this way. I still largely feel that way.
- 31:06And I would just give it a three out, three out of five soju
- 31:11bottles. So wow, we're really on the same
- 31:14page about this. And we'll get into all the
- 31:18spoilers on Moon Lovers right after this.
- 31:29You want to come in? All right, we're on the other
- 31:32side of spoilers for Moon Lovers.
- 31:34Scarlet Hart Rio and I think we want to start off by comparing a
- 31:39little bit the show against the sea drama, because we both
- 31:42watched a little bit of the sea drama Scarlet Hart from 2011 and
- 31:49I found immediately that it was better than Scarlet Hart Rio.
- 31:54How did you feel having watched a few episodes of Scarlet Hart
- 31:58from 2011? Yeah, I basically made it to
- 32:01like the end of episode 5, so I thought it was.
- 32:05A lot better. Even though it was like sort of
- 32:09older and the production was a little bit lagging, like the the
- 32:13characters were a lot better drawn, including the main
- 32:16character. The relationships that she had
- 32:20formed with the Princess were much more vibrant and dynamic
- 32:24and like actually allowed her to have a personality as opposed to
- 32:29just. Being like a very very obviously
- 32:33I U has a very beautiful face and is a very like lovely just
- 32:38aura about her. But there's something, there's
- 32:41something a little bit more, I guess to the actress in in the
- 32:44Chinese drama still plays the lead.
- 32:47I agree. I think she ended up.
- 32:49Yeah, go ahead. Go ahead.
- 32:51Sorry, she ended up marrying that guy.
- 32:55The 4th Prince. What?
- 32:56They're still married. What?
- 33:02He's a, he's a famous Taiwanese actor and they like, met on that
- 33:06set and they're still married. I'm in shock.
- 33:09I'm in shock. Oh my God, so wow, what is life?
- 33:14So yeah, I had started watching the C drama Scarlet Hart,
- 33:18intending to watch the whole thing as like extra credit for
- 33:22this for this recording. And Oh my gosh, immediately I
- 33:28was like, this is better storytelling, This is way more
- 33:30cohesive. I love the female lead, I love
- 33:34what's supposed to be. I use character way better than
- 33:37I U and she just had a lot of spunk to her.
- 33:41You you saw this extended scene of her fighting with her
- 33:46boyfriend, who essentially just cheated on her and she caught
- 33:49him cheating. And this is all in the present
- 33:51day. She goes into the street in the
- 33:53middle of this big fight and she gets electrocuted and gets run
- 34:01over by a car and it's like this whole thing.
- 34:03And she basically tumbles because of the electrocution and
- 34:08she tumbles into the past. And she has.
- 34:12She obvious she figures out right in pretty, pretty in
- 34:15episode one, I think she figures out that she's landed.
- 34:20She went through a warm hole in time and has her consciousness
- 34:24has landed in a body of a reincarnated version of herself
- 34:30or past version of herself. And she's already thinking like,
- 34:34how do I get back to the present?
- 34:35I U doesn't really like attempt to get back into the present
- 34:42day. She's just like, OK, I guess I'm
- 34:45here now I guess I've died. Like, she just assumes that
- 34:49she's died. But at least the girl in the sea
- 34:52drama, the female lead in the sea drama was like
- 34:55experimenting. She was like, where did I, what
- 34:58was my near death experience? And she like, went back to the
- 35:00scene of the crime and was like maybe I should throw myself down
- 35:04these stairs again. Like it's either I die to live
- 35:08or I just die and like, that's that because my I guess I've
- 35:12died in the in the present day as well.
- 35:16And I was like, she's so smart. And she had these moments that I
- 35:20was looking for from I U where she's a fish out of water.
- 35:23They're dressing. They have these scenes of them,
- 35:25like dressing her in the sea drama.
- 35:28And it's all these layers. And she's like, how many more
- 35:30layers are left? And she's like complaining about
- 35:32her wardrobe, which is like a historically accurate wardrobe.
- 35:36And she's suffering in the heat. And she's like, Oh my God, like
- 35:39she can't handle it. I U barely has fish out of water
- 35:43moments in the past, right? This Cordell Dynasty, which is
- 35:50like the first iteration of Korea basically.
- 35:53And I'm like, I want that. I want where she's struggling in
- 35:58the past. I want those scenes where like
- 36:00the wardrobe is restrictive or she can't get around or like she
- 36:05she doesn't have issues. And that's a big problem for me
- 36:09because you're just sending someone from 2016 back into the
- 36:13year 923 and not she's fine. I'm like, where's the the
- 36:18struggle, you know? So I don't know if you felt that
- 36:21kind of way and had any other things that you liked in the C
- 36:26drama versus the K drama. Yeah, I mean, I think that I
- 36:29really, I really like that, she related to the Princess in a
- 36:33much. In a much different way, right?
- 36:36Like she relates to one of them through political ideas.
- 36:38She relates one of them sort of more emotionally.
- 36:41She relates to the 8th Prince who's you know, like I said, you
- 36:46know, supposed to be sort of this virtuous fellow and
- 36:50everybody sort of looks up to him.
- 36:51But in both of them he's actually he's he's kind of a
- 36:54dirtbag and and I feel like, but the thing that I really liked
- 36:59about the sea drama version is that she.
- 37:02It's it automatically starts with this mystery, right?
- 37:05Because when she wakes up, she sees somebody at the top of the
- 37:08stairs. He's probably pushed her, yes.
- 37:11And so there is this sort of glimpse into the future right as
- 37:15she comes into the past, which I thought was actually quite time,
- 37:19and a clever way of introducing a mystery.
- 37:22Yeah, I love that because it was.
- 37:25And it ended up being the Princess who had pushed her down
- 37:30the stairs, which is attempted murder, right?
- 37:33So she attempted to murder her in the past and the equivalent
- 37:39character is the Princess. I forgot her name, but the
- 37:43Princess in Scarler Hart Rio, the Korean version, she doesn't
- 37:48attempt attempt murder in episode one on I use character,
- 37:55right? Like she's just catty and mean
- 37:57and bratty and like, you hate her, but not because she's
- 38:01actually committing crimes against her, right?
- 38:05So the stakes automatically were way higher in the sea drama, and
- 38:11you get that there's a darkness there versus the K drama where
- 38:15there's very little darkness in the front half of the show.
- 38:19So again, a little more even. I also like that, you know the
- 38:24the sort of the, I guess the villainous.
- 38:29Or one of the villainess is in the Chinese drama, is not a
- 38:34sister to all of the Princess. Like it's actually his other
- 38:39wife, right. And then her sister.
- 38:42So like, it's really odd to watch, you know, like Scarlet
- 38:47Hart, Rio, when like all these princes are like boners out for
- 38:53like they're half sister. This is disgusting and I guess
- 38:57we should talk about it now. Is that what the fuck is going
- 39:01on with the incest in this show? Like what the fuck is actually
- 39:04going on that we we're just expected to accept that every
- 39:09single Prince has, like you said, boner out for their
- 39:12sister, their half sister. In many cases it's just their
- 39:16half sister. But again, that is not OK.
- 39:19It is disgusting. And the fact that nobody had
- 39:22ever says anything to point this out, right?
- 39:27Like that's your sister. You shouldn't be having these
- 39:31conversations. You shouldn't be coming on
- 39:33strong to your sister. You shouldn't be trying to marry
- 39:38your sister or like get with her in any way, shape or form.
- 39:40That's disgusting. That's depraved.
- 39:43And we just like, it's just out there in in Scarlet Hart Rio and
- 39:49nobody talks about it. It's bizarre.
- 39:53It's nasty. Yeah, and I mean like that.
- 39:56The one Prince who looks like he wandered off the set of Lake
- 39:58Pirates of the Caribbean. What's up with the guyliner?
- 40:01He's. The villain What is up?
- 40:03With the guyliner on Wang Yo the that Prince, third Prince I
- 40:08think it was what is up with him?
- 40:11He's just like he's like, yeah, somebody get the stylist for
- 40:15Johnny Depp onto this set so that we can everybody can know
- 40:19that he's the bad fellow of the of the drama.
- 40:24And I think that what you know. But like it's really
- 40:27interesting. I think how like all the
- 40:29villains are all really like deep into incest.
- 40:34Yes. Right.
- 40:34So like that guy he's always after Princess Yan Hua.
- 40:41She's a villain and she's all like, just like, you know,
- 40:46always after. So like she's just on him
- 40:48constantly. Like just like had a crush on
- 40:50him all the time. And like her other brothers
- 40:52like, know about it. They're like, well, haven't you
- 40:54always had a thing for? So, you know, it's like, like,
- 40:58yeah, like your half brother and then, but like, I think the most
- 41:02obvious one is like the queen who is just like, let's just
- 41:07talk about how freaking hot she is in like virtually every
- 41:12scene. But like, it's always inviting.
- 41:14So to come and visit her, like when she's like bathing, you
- 41:18know? And it's just like constantly
- 41:20trying to seduce him, like, but also like, like like like like
- 41:28exile him from her life like so it's this weird, like nasty push
- 41:33and pull. I don't like.
- 41:37I can't subscribe to it like that.
- 41:39She's like trying to seduce her own son.
- 41:43But I will say that she's just so out of pocket, like the whole
- 41:48show. She's just out of pocket.
- 41:50And she hates her son for literally no reason.
- 41:54There is no reason for her hate. She is the one that, like,
- 41:59scarred him, like injured him, abandoned him and then
- 42:04absolutely loathes him. And there is no real, like,
- 42:08there was I I'm like searching, reading the tea leaves on this,
- 42:12trying to figure out, like, why she hates him so much.
- 42:15And there's literally no reason. I mean, I guess you could say
- 42:17it's like that, You know, Like he represents the guilt she had,
- 42:20like all of the developmental violence she imposed on him, I
- 42:24guess by sending him away. But like, you know, yeah, I
- 42:27think she's just, you know, her brain is just like polluted,
- 42:30like all of the water that they are like taking baths in and
- 42:35that she's constantly inviting her sons to join her in a
- 42:38conversation once in there. Well, the third Prince, the
- 42:42Guideliner dude definitely joins her.
- 42:46It's just it's weird it's and no one talks about it.
- 42:49No one's addressing this is just happened to just here it is like
- 42:53on a platter incest and I I can't wrap my head around it.
- 42:59I really can't. Yeah.
- 43:01So it's almost like a check box for villainy, like true, And
- 43:05then they just go right by it. Yeah, yeah.
- 43:08Going back to just, I use introduction.
- 43:12She's so pathetic in episode one.
- 43:15Like, honestly, she's sitting on the dock in this public park in
- 43:19this mountainous area. And she's drinking soju by
- 43:23herself in the middle of the fucking day.
- 43:26And she's lamenting that her boyfriend cheated on her.
- 43:28He left her with all this debt, blah blah blah blah blah.
- 43:31She's telling and not showing and she starts drinking with the
- 43:35homeless guy. It turns out to be the
- 43:37astrologer in the past, which we can get to later.
- 43:40And honestly, she is so pathetic.
- 43:44Compared to the sea drama version of that character who is
- 43:48like fighting in the street with her boyfriend and is like very
- 43:54animated and not aggressive, but like she stands up for herself
- 43:59and I you feels like she's not that very much in the show and
- 44:06especially with that introduction and then like these
- 44:09little logic things like she's she goes.
- 44:12Jumps in the water to save this kid who fell in the the water.
- 44:17The kid had a life jacket on, so I don't even know like why she
- 44:21was so urgently going to swim over to him and pick him up
- 44:25because he was going to be fine and then she gets dragged under.
- 44:30It's like a different premise, I guess, because the moon has
- 44:33nothing to do with why the sea drama female lead ended up in
- 44:39the past, right? I wish it was more cut and dry.
- 44:44Like the sea drama versus the moon mysteriously that was there
- 44:49an eclipse. Why did the eclipse only take
- 44:53her? Like it was like she wasn't
- 44:55dying or drowning when the eclipse started.
- 44:58It was like suddenly she gets dragged under and you again, you
- 45:03don't hear anything about oh, she just landed in her,
- 45:05reincarnated that the past version of her anything.
- 45:09Honestly, it's so. Half baked.
- 45:14They were just like, Oh yeah, here she is.
- 45:15She's in the past and I and I wondered about, like about, you
- 45:20know, her connection with that sort of homeless man slash
- 45:24astrologer like and like remember how they talk about
- 45:27like he, he almost drowned as a child and then she jumps in
- 45:32after this drowning child and and like what that connection
- 45:36sort of was in that sort of moment as well.
- 45:39But yeah, I mean, I think she is introduced as kind of like a sad
- 45:45sack in like the modern world. And then she's kind of, you
- 45:50know, like just somebody who's very, very confused when she
- 45:52gets to, you know, the historical era that she finds
- 45:55herself in and then soon sort of recovers, like, like you said,
- 45:59gets over the fish out of water very easily and kind of reverts
- 46:03to this like sort of plucky, sweet, bright soul that
- 46:08everybody is in in love with. Probably because she doesn't
- 46:16have much of A personality and is so generic.
- 46:19Right, right. That's my thing too.
- 46:22You hit the nail on the head that she's just so generic.
- 46:25She's just so generic. And of course every Prince falls
- 46:27in love with her. She sings, which of course
- 46:30anybody who hears I use things in a fall in love with, I use.
- 46:33So it was just annoying. It's annoying and.
- 46:38The 4th Prince Wong So like, he just felt like this emo teenager
- 46:43with a Phantom of the Opera mask.
- 46:46And I distinctly remember thinking that I can't wait for
- 46:50them to take off the mask because I want to see how bad
- 46:53his face looks underneath. They finally take off the mask
- 46:57and the scar is not even that bad.
- 47:01Like it's so no. Like he just makes them hotter.
- 47:04Yeah, like it just makes him hotter, like it's not even a
- 47:06thing. And she easily cooks up some
- 47:09cosmetics for him, custom blends, and applies it to his
- 47:14face and the rest of the show. You never see the scar again.
- 47:18It's non issue. I was like, this is the
- 47:21stupidest fucking thing I've ever seen in my life.
- 47:23And the sea drama 4th Prince does not have a scar.
- 47:26There was nothing having to do with this.
- 47:28Like scar on his face. That's.
- 47:31Made him a social outcast and a pariah and all the rest.
- 47:33Like, it's so stupid that they added this to the K drama.
- 47:38Well, and then to bookend his scar with her scar, right?
- 47:42Like at the end, right. So, like, it's like putting the
- 47:45scar back into Scarlet Heart. Like, I'm telling you, these
- 47:49directors, these producers really believed that they were
- 47:54on to something like magnificent.
- 47:57And I mean, it is like on paper that is clever to put the scar
- 48:00back and scar out at her. But like, is it though, did it
- 48:05come out that way? I don't.
- 48:07I mean, I don't know. Yeah, I don't know either.
- 48:11There's so many problems. But let's talk about the first
- 48:15relationship that she has, which is.
- 48:18Her and Wang Wook, which is the 8th Prince and that's Kangan
- 48:22Doll's character because she has this like first of all, that's
- 48:25her first cousin's husband that she's crushing on.
- 48:29It was way more dramatic in the sea drama because that was her
- 48:32blood sister's husband instead of like first cousin.
- 48:36Like, I don't know why they thought to even do that.
- 48:38Like, separated even more because they were going so
- 48:41fucking hard on the incest in the Royal Family and then they
- 48:44didn't like, like, tie. The the sisterhood together for
- 48:50her and the I think her name is like Myungsoo.
- 48:55I couldn't understand that at all.
- 48:56Like, why that difference? Yeah.
- 49:00I mean, I think there's a lot of moralizing in this drama.
- 49:04Like there's a lot of morality that sort of has to be kept in
- 49:07check that that wasn't in check. No, but I appreciated it more
- 49:12because. She felt some type of way about
- 49:15the Prince and then the sister didn't care at all about the 4th
- 49:19Prince. She didn't care at all about her
- 49:21husband. And she was the second wife, not
- 49:23the first wife. So like she was already of a
- 49:26lesser standing within the household and there was no love
- 49:30there. So it was like less complicated
- 49:32and more complicated in the sea drama in different ways.
- 49:36And the K drama was just so much lesser and bizarre.
- 49:40Like the changes didn't make sense to me.
- 49:44Did you like his first wife like Myungsoo, the first cousin or
- 49:50whatever? Because I remember her death
- 49:53scene very vividly. Yeah.
- 49:56I mean that's a very famous sort of, you know, death scene where
- 49:59she's like, you know, like on his back close to their home,
- 50:04right. And she's just sort of sort of
- 50:05very devoted to him. And it's not like that in the
- 50:08Chinese drama. It's actually interesting to you
- 50:09at all. Like she sort of blames him of
- 50:11the of he was killed following their marriage.
- 50:14And so, yeah, I mean, but I really, I do think Kangal Newell
- 50:19did a really good job. Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 50:24I think that I believe him that he fell in love with Jesus.
- 50:29And I believe him that he had feelings for his wife that he
- 50:35didn't realize he had until after she died.
- 50:38So all those complex feelings I was buying into.
- 50:42And I love the scene where Jesus is following in his footsteps in
- 50:46the snow. That's also like a very famous
- 50:49scene in my head. And I remembered it vividly from
- 50:52when I watched it in 2016. So I was like, excited to see
- 50:55that scene again. Of her and him in the snow.
- 50:58And then he catches her. She's like wobbles and almost
- 51:01falls over into the snow. It's all really good.
- 51:05The the I guess the scene that everyone remembers is the one
- 51:09where Wang so helps her and covers her with his cloak in the
- 51:15rain when she is advocating for Court Lady O for her life.
- 51:22Because court lady O like took the blame for this like thing of
- 51:25poisoning the. Crown Prince in this whole thing
- 51:29and he stands over her and he basically takes her side in this
- 51:33very volatile protest that she's staging in front of the King's
- 51:39like court and in injects the position.
- 51:43The 8th Prince, Wong Luke Like turns his back like walks away
- 51:49and I just love that scene. Even though I'm not big on the
- 51:53show, this scene is still so beautiful to me.
- 51:56And I don't know if you felt any type of way about it.
- 51:58Yeah. I mean I I liked it.
- 52:00I mean again like I I like you feel like the romance between so
- 52:08and Sue are actually is really actually quite demented in a lot
- 52:12of ways. Like there's like some real sort
- 52:15of, like abusive behavior going on in it.
- 52:21And and I do think it was odd in that scene that like, you know,
- 52:25they're just like sort of standing there and like what
- 52:28comes out and then looks at her just to like gawk at her and
- 52:32then turns around and leaves like it.
- 52:34There's a lot of that in this in this, you know, in this drama
- 52:38where it's like, oh, well, we have to, you know, we have to
- 52:41show that like he's seen her or like we have to like show that
- 52:45somebody has said something, you know.
- 52:47And it's usually the astrologer who just kind of comes in and
- 52:49sort of explains, like, what what they feel that the audience
- 52:53might not know. But yeah, like, there's a lot of
- 52:55these, like, sort of little scenes where, like, you're
- 52:58wondering if that's sort of necessary.
- 53:00Did he have to come out and just see her?
- 53:02I don't. Know, Yeah, if you break down
- 53:04the scene, you can break down the scene and really poke holes
- 53:10in it. Because obviously not these all
- 53:13the Princess that need to converge and watch her do this
- 53:16protest. And Juan Wu didn't need to show
- 53:20up. He had already abandoned her.
- 53:22Like before that, which is why she was tortured and why she
- 53:27went through that hardship because he didn't like he chose
- 53:30sides. He chose his family and his
- 53:32sister who had backed him into a corner and was in cahoots with
- 53:36the queen who's a bitch. And like, it was this whole
- 53:39thing where his family sort of betrayed him and then he had to
- 53:42take their side and couldn't save her and like.
- 53:46It just culminates in this scene, which yes, it's super on
- 53:49the nose. No, he didn't need to turn his
- 53:52back very decidedly on her. We already got that he was going
- 53:57to break up with her that the relationship was over, but it
- 54:00was, it was just the romance of the scene that I liked and.
- 54:07By romance, I mean like the staging.
- 54:08I don't necessarily mean like, oh, it's so romantic that like
- 54:11Wong so came out of nowhere and like shielded her from the
- 54:14brain. Like that's not like, that was
- 54:16fine. But that's not the romance that
- 54:19I'm talking about. I really just mean the
- 54:21cinematography and the way that they are acting throughout the
- 54:24scene. It's it's I'm buying in and it's
- 54:26good. You mentioned the toxicity of
- 54:30the fourth Prince. How do I put this without
- 54:33sounding like this man is a terror, but he is, and there's
- 54:38no way of getting around it. He's just like a problem.
- 54:43He slaughters a horse in episode one just to make the point that
- 54:47he's not going back from where he came from.
- 54:49Like, right out of the gate. He just like, murders a horse,
- 54:52marks a horse right in the in the, like, entryway of the
- 54:55palace. And I'm like, what the hell is
- 54:58going on here? Like he's such a problem.
- 55:02He's so emo and like, he flies off the handle when she gets in
- 55:08the middle of this assassin situation.
- 55:11That was like an episode three or something.
- 55:13They're in the woods. She sees something that she
- 55:16shouldn't. And one of the Princess, I think
- 55:19the third Prince, the Guideliner Prince, orchestrated this
- 55:22assassination attempt on the Crown Prince and they're all
- 55:25trying to go after the assassins and get more info.
- 55:28And she like, breaks up the party.
- 55:29She's where she's not supposed to be.
- 55:31And she gets taken hostage by one of the assassins, like do
- 55:34you remember this? And he gets so mad at her, he
- 55:38threatens to kill her right then And like it's like that's not
- 55:43romance. Like how does she, how does she
- 55:46fall in love with him? Actually, because he's the
- 55:49person that's like he, him and the 8th Prince I should say both
- 55:56treat her like an object and. He's saying things like she
- 56:01belongs to me. Should I call you my person?
- 56:06And a lot of possession. Like, tons of possession.
- 56:09If you're like, that's your trope.
- 56:11If that's it, like your toxic guilty pleasure, like, oh, I
- 56:15love when they say shit like that, like, oh, you're mine, you
- 56:18can't be with anybody else. Well, like that.
- 56:19Possessions, possessive jealousy, shit like that's all
- 56:23that the 4th Prince does. Literally, that's everything
- 56:27that he does. And it's it's.
- 56:30It gets to a point where I'm like, this is too much and I
- 56:34hate it and I don't want them to be together.
- 56:37Yeah. I mean, I think that they're
- 56:38both sort of right. Like, I think on one hand he's
- 56:41like, I am this. Yeah, like I'm doing all of this
- 56:46murdering and like naming and stuff.
- 56:49But like, I'm nice to you. So like, that means I'm a good
- 56:53person, right? And then and and on the reverse,
- 56:56she's like, I can change it. Like he won't be this sort of
- 57:00bloody banded. And like, I like it is this sort
- 57:04of real, Like sort of like I can change him narrative that is
- 57:09obviously, you know, completely misguided and you know, results
- 57:14in, you know, and a great deal of suffering and pain for like
- 57:17basically everyone who comes in contact with them.
- 57:20Yeah, because what What the hell was she thinking?
- 57:25Because she literally says to herself, oh, I can change him
- 57:29and I can change history. Like what kind of demented woman
- 57:34is going to sit there and be like, I'm going to fall in love
- 57:37with this problematic Prince that I know historically from my
- 57:41memory of 8th grade history that he murders all of his brothers
- 57:47and is a fucking problem? I'm going to fall in love with
- 57:50that guy and I'm going to change him, like.
- 57:54Who do you think you are? You know what I'm saying?
- 57:57Like she's delusional as well. And the fact that the the show
- 58:05even put in there court Lady O's story, right, because she become
- 58:10Hesu Iu's character becomes a court.
- 58:15What is it called? A court lady.
- 58:18And she is underneath Court Lady O, who's like the stern.
- 58:22Upper Court Lady like a managerial physician and she
- 58:28teaches her all of these ways. But Court lady O has this tragic
- 58:32back story where she was also a favored concubine of the king
- 58:38because they had fallen in love before he was the king.
- 58:40And then they became king and she was like still with him,
- 58:43still in love with him. She miscarried their baby
- 58:47because the queen made her miscarry like sent her poison
- 58:51tea. And she miscarried their child.
- 58:55And she's basically like warning Hesu the entire time that she's
- 58:59on screen. You need to get out of the
- 59:02palace. This is a dangerous situation.
- 59:04These boys are not going to back you.
- 59:06They're not going to support you.
- 59:07They're all selfish pricks and you need to get out.
- 59:11He had my story. Like, look at how it turned out
- 59:14for me. Don't be like me.
- 59:16And Hesu still doesn't still doesn't leave.
- 59:20Still doesn't heed court. Lady owes warning, still doesn't
- 59:23learn from her mistakes, and the exact same thing happens to her
- 59:28like she dies and it's this stupid ass warning that probably
- 59:35doesn't need to be in there. Because I think we're all adults
- 59:38and we can get like this is a volatile situation and she
- 59:41probably should just get out. But even with that, like, this
- 59:46stupid girl still doesn't leave and get out.
- 59:51Yeah, and I mean, I think that, like, it's just, it's really,
- 59:55really sort of confusing. Like what she thinks the end
- 59:57game is going to be. Right.
- 1:00:00And and it and it is and it is this like it is really just, I
- 1:00:03guess, like marrying and like, you know, trying on like the,
- 1:00:07like the wedding dress. Even though she knows she's
- 1:00:10never going to marry it. Like, you know, and like staring
- 1:00:12herself, staring at herself in the reflection, Like, you know,
- 1:00:15it's just like, I'm not really sure you know what she thought
- 1:00:20she was going to do or how she was going to do it, I guess is
- 1:00:23what I mean. There's a point in episode 8
- 1:00:27where she saves him from all this vitriol from the peasants
- 1:00:32outside the palace. Because he's picked for this
- 1:00:34rain ritual, and because he has this scar, the entire populist
- 1:00:38hates him. But she fixes it with a little
- 1:00:40bit of 980 makeup and. He walks out, the whole thing
- 1:00:47goes well, it starts raining, everyone's happy.
- 1:00:50But he he asked her in that same episode if she's given any
- 1:00:54thought to her purpose in life, why she was born and I was like,
- 1:00:59where is this coming from? This 4th Prince is super toxic.
- 1:01:03He has all these issues and she feels bad for him.
- 1:01:06It's been pity so far. Pity that she's dealing with him
- 1:01:10and she sort of understands that he's unwanted and whatever.
- 1:01:14And she, like I guess, relates. She says back to him that she's
- 1:01:18been contemplating it lately, but there is no answer.
- 1:01:22This is her quote. I wasn't born like this because
- 1:01:25I wanted to be. I am the one who determines how
- 1:01:28I live. I can live a very cool life or I
- 1:01:31can live a sad one. I just don't want to live a life
- 1:01:33being controlled by others. That's what I've decided.
- 1:01:37No one in this world has an easy life.
- 1:01:39You just don't notice them. Everyone has a hard life and I'm
- 1:01:43like. This is a wonderful thing to
- 1:01:46say, but I don't believe her for a minute that she was
- 1:01:51contemplating her place in the universe and the with her
- 1:01:55purpose in life and why she was born and why she's suddenly back
- 1:02:01in the past. And what's her purpose is here.
- 1:02:03Like bullshit. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:02:06Like what is this self realization that she's having
- 1:02:10with the 4th Prince? Who suddenly, out of nowhere,
- 1:02:13asked her what her purpose in life is and if she's thought
- 1:02:16about it. I don't know if you thought the
- 1:02:19same thing at this point, or if you had any thoughts about just
- 1:02:23how her character arc shakes out and if she's actually thinking
- 1:02:30through things in in a logical way.
- 1:02:34Being from the future. Yeah, I'm not really sure.
- 1:02:37Like she has like she has like sort of a solution to
- 1:02:41everything. And I mean I think it's it's
- 1:02:44it's almost less like I think what bothers me about the story
- 1:02:47and the character arc that you're talking about is is is
- 1:02:50less like how how she's performing it.
- 1:02:54Like I you but or or even how that character is like being
- 1:02:59asked to sort of do certain things.
- 1:03:01But it's it's how she's repeatedly blamed for everything
- 1:03:05that goes wrong and and how the story actually almost convinces
- 1:03:11us that she is also to blame right for everything that goes
- 1:03:15wrong. And then she ends her arc
- 1:03:19basically apologizing to this monster for leaving him alone.
- 1:03:25Right. And so I don't think she is
- 1:03:27thinking about like who who she is because all these people are
- 1:03:32telling her like, you know, like the the, you know the the third
- 1:03:37Prince is telling her that it's her fault that oh, you covered
- 1:03:39up the scar. And that's how I that's how I
- 1:03:42came to be this, you know, evil king or whatever.
- 1:03:46The Princess is coming and telling her like, oh you know
- 1:03:49you said this to work and you made him believe that so was
- 1:03:51going to take the throne until like it's your fault that his
- 1:03:54whole personality changes. And like you can understand that
- 1:03:57those are just villains like trying to rationalize like
- 1:04:00they're bad behavior. But the weird part is how the
- 1:04:02story actually make like turns on her.
- 1:04:07Yeah, and makes her believe like like that she did all these
- 1:04:11things. So I don't.
- 1:04:12I think you're right. I don't think she really is
- 1:04:14thinking about her place because the story doesn't really want to
- 1:04:17give her anything other than blame for like all these men's
- 1:04:21bad behavior and and women as well.
- 1:04:24You have touched on something. I think you nailed it because.
- 1:04:28Absolutely. That's how the story and the
- 1:04:30writing wants you to feel by the end.
- 1:04:32Is that like, she fucked it up? It's all her fault that all
- 1:04:35these people went bad. And why does the character
- 1:04:39believe it? Like, OK, they're trying to sell
- 1:04:43us this narrative, but also the character Heysu deeply believes
- 1:04:47that she is at fall for all of these terrible acts that
- 1:04:52happened and the way that history shook out and.
- 1:04:57I think that's a problem like that.
- 1:04:58Does the story hate Hesu? Like do this?
- 1:05:02Does do the showrunners hate Hesu?
- 1:05:04Then this female character, like the lead, do they just hate her
- 1:05:10because they think they want to pin it all on her?
- 1:05:14Yeah, like they give her a Really.
- 1:05:16It's ungiving, sort of. And the weird part is, is that
- 1:05:19like, it really all stems on this scar, right?
- 1:05:23And and and how she covers it up with like sort of these these
- 1:05:25makeup talents that she's brought with her to the past.
- 1:05:30And you know, but like you know you're seeing a human being like
- 1:05:35sort of walk down as you know a bustling, you know, Gorio St.
- 1:05:41getting like shit thrown on him and like having the this sort of
- 1:05:46devastating experience. Like most people would want to
- 1:05:49help somebody like that. Like like they're saying like
- 1:05:53that the the cruelest things to him And like you know she's
- 1:05:57witnessing this and his disappointment and obviously his
- 1:06:00embarrassment. Is it really that bad that she
- 1:06:02would be like, hey, you know what, maybe maybe I'll help a
- 1:06:05brother out and like, you know, like see if we can, you know,
- 1:06:09like not get them to like, throw shit on your face.
- 1:06:15I I see. I see what you're saying.
- 1:06:16Like, you cannot blame her because she took pity on him.
- 1:06:21And of course, any any person with a semblance of morality
- 1:06:24would want to be of help in that situation.
- 1:06:27And like, not have this traumatic thing happened to the
- 1:06:314th Prince again, Like Wang, so is at his wit's end.
- 1:06:36And yeah, he's. Gotten an unfair shake in his
- 1:06:38whole life. And yeah, he's a murderer.
- 1:06:40And yeah, he's problematic and toxic.
- 1:06:42And he's like laying hands on her every chance he gets and
- 1:06:44threatening to kill her and telling him not telling her not
- 1:06:47to look at him in the face and stuff.
- 1:06:49Like he's so insecure and she just puts makeup on his face.
- 1:06:54Like it's very simple, right? She gives him the confidence
- 1:06:57that he needs to step out there and do this job.
- 1:07:00And for some reason from here on out it is.
- 1:07:04In her in the story, it is her fault for everything bad that
- 1:07:07happens. And at that point when she's
- 1:07:09putting the makeup on his face, she's she's ready to get down
- 1:07:13with the 8th Prince. Like she's just doing this as a
- 1:07:16sort of a friend. She doesn't know who he is.
- 1:07:18She's she at this point, she's still trying to put together who
- 1:07:22you know. Huang Jung, I think is his name.
- 1:07:25Yeah, the eventual like she's still trying to figure out who
- 1:07:28he is. She doesn't know it's him.
- 1:07:30She only starts to get the flashbacks after the water
- 1:07:34ritual that he performs that she sort of helps him out.
- 1:07:38So like it's it's like it really isn't her problem at all.
- 1:07:45She's never been her problem. I mean, honestly, she's at this
- 1:07:49point, she's going to, she's just going to Shuck up with
- 1:07:52this, you know, her dead cousin's husband.
- 1:07:57Yeah, like she had. She didn't have feelings for
- 1:08:00Wong. So at this point it is not
- 1:08:01romantically driven that she's doing this good deed and I just
- 1:08:07can't believe like you made such a fine point.
- 1:08:09So I I mean, we can talk about that for the for like the next
- 1:08:1220 minutes, but we'll move on. I think the scar really annoyed
- 1:08:16me on the first time that I watched it because it.
- 1:08:23I thought it was going to be like Phantom of the opera level,
- 1:08:26like scarring or truly heinous like crime that's been committed
- 1:08:30to and that he really does have to hide his face because it's a
- 1:08:34a morbid sight. And that was not the case.
- 1:08:37And I mean, just the fact that she is able to cover it up with
- 1:08:41makeup is like ridiculous to me with like the skills that she
- 1:08:45had like made the makeup herself and like, if I feel like.
- 1:08:50If you went into Sephora and got the best makeup artist in
- 1:08:54Sephora and sent them back to the year 900, they had no idea.
- 1:09:00They would have no idea how to create pigments and colors and
- 1:09:06fucking soap like rose soap and different things like that.
- 1:09:10That is what the story is telling us.
- 1:09:12Happened with her character because that's all she was.
- 1:09:15She was like a cosmetic counter girl and like these little
- 1:09:20things. Logic add up to me and it's
- 1:09:23really annoying. It's unbelievably annoying.
- 1:09:26It feels like the story thinks were stupid and they're just
- 1:09:28like they were like, Oh yeah, she was just like a cosmetic
- 1:09:30counter girl and she like knows how to make cosmetics.
- 1:09:32Like please, give me a fucking break.
- 1:09:36Well, and are we? Are we really like led to
- 1:09:39believe that like, you know, just random sort of citizens are
- 1:09:44like allowed to throw like excrement at a Prince, like
- 1:09:48during like a royal ritual, Like he's a member of, like the, like
- 1:09:53the royal family. Like most of those people would
- 1:09:57have like, you know, gotten into a lot of, you know, literal hot
- 1:10:02water because they boiled people alive then.
- 1:10:05And like if they were like sort of caught like sort of harassing
- 1:10:09a member of the royal family, like it just it doesn't really
- 1:10:13make sense. And like like from one day to
- 1:10:17the next they're like, he's cursed.
- 1:10:19He's cursed. He's cursed.
- 1:10:20And then the next day it's all covered up.
- 1:10:21They're like he's he's our new leader.
- 1:10:28I the chosen one it. Makes the populace look really
- 1:10:32stupid. And maybe it's a problem just
- 1:10:35generally with the show that they're working mostly within
- 1:10:40the vacuum of the royal palace and.
- 1:10:43Whenever we're outside the royal palace, which is very few times,
- 1:10:46it is stupid like it. They did not put any effort into
- 1:10:50making the regular Joe schmo that's on the street is not
- 1:10:55wearing silk. The regular peasant low class
- 1:10:58person look like a competent logical person, like they were
- 1:11:05just throwing shit at a Prince and like there was no
- 1:11:08repercussions. Like you said and.
- 1:11:11I I honestly like that's what I mean by these logic things that
- 1:11:15just keep piling on and make the show lesser and then she's ends
- 1:11:20up being like I can change. I can change these toxic men and
- 1:11:26save the future and you're like you're nobody.
- 1:11:29Like, you're not Indiana Jones here, OK?
- 1:11:32Like, you're not someone equipped to do this, and it
- 1:11:38makes me upset, but. He kisses her at the end of this
- 1:11:41episode that we're talking about, which is episode 9,
- 1:11:44because he goes Wong, so goes to find her after the rain ritual
- 1:11:48is all said and done. And she's in the middle of
- 1:11:51having a fucking panic attack because she saw this premonition
- 1:11:56which we never get. We never know why she saw these
- 1:11:59premonitions and if anybody else.
- 1:12:01The other time traveler presumably was the astrologer.
- 1:12:04And if the astrologer had premonitions ever.
- 1:12:07It was just like suddenly she just knows that this is Wong, so
- 1:12:11is going to be the future king, and he's the the villain, so to
- 1:12:14speak, of history. And she sees in the middle of
- 1:12:18his panic attack and he ends up saying you are mine, you are my
- 1:12:23person, you are someone who can neither leave nor die without my
- 1:12:27permission. And then he just plants one on
- 1:12:29her. And you're telling me this is a
- 1:12:33romance? Like we we were berating the
- 1:12:38errors for doing very similar things and suddenly, because
- 1:12:42it's E jingyi, because it's in the past, because all these
- 1:12:46trimmings I guess are really thrilling people that this
- 1:12:51version is OK, like this version of a toxic mill lead is OK And I
- 1:12:56don't believe that. I still I don't agree with with
- 1:13:00that, that people can. Bash one thing and like the same
- 1:13:04thing is done here and people are like, Oh my God, this is the
- 1:13:07best K drama of all time. It's like, what?
- 1:13:10Well, and I also think that, like, I agree with the
- 1:13:12sprinkling of magic when it's sort of so she like, obviously
- 1:13:16there's some matter past in the 1st place.
- 1:13:18There's some measures like it just kind of shows up when it's
- 1:13:21really convenient to like, move the story along.
- 1:13:24And it's like, I like a little bit of magic, OK, You know, like
- 1:13:28no one's no one's saying that. There's no place for that, but.
- 1:13:31Make it make sense, right? Like, don't just use it as like,
- 1:13:35don't just use it as like, Oh well, we don't know how else to
- 1:13:38sort of explain it. And it feels weird to have the
- 1:13:41astrologer just come in and explain it again.
- 1:13:43So we'll just have this, you know, like this sort of
- 1:13:46preminent or something. I'm making faces over here like
- 1:13:49people can't see this, but I hate it.
- 1:13:52I actually don't know. I to be honest.
- 1:13:55Like in sort of what you were talking about in the earlier
- 1:13:58section, not to sort of move beyond hey Sue, but like when
- 1:14:03you talked about like so that there's like two different
- 1:14:05dramas going on. I really do feel like they had
- 1:14:09two choices. Like they either hand off the
- 1:14:12second-half too long so properly.
- 1:14:15And like he know he is now the main character and hey Sue is no
- 1:14:19longer, you know, the main character like that.
- 1:14:23They actually give it to him. I see.
- 1:14:25And they make that transition properly, which they didn't.
- 1:14:29They just kind of neutered her and made her like some sort of
- 1:14:34weird sidekick to him in his like.
- 1:14:37Or you could have kept her as the main character, but made,
- 1:14:42like established a better relationship between her and the
- 1:14:45astrologer. And like, who are you?
- 1:14:47What are you doing here? Like what?
- 1:14:50How much of the future do you know how much of the like?
- 1:14:52Like, how much am I supposed to know?
- 1:14:55Like, what is it like to be, like a time traveler, since you
- 1:14:59and I are the only two who have any sort of experience with
- 1:15:02that? You know what I mean?
- 1:15:03Like, like, can we affect history?
- 1:15:05Well, have you ever tried to get somewhere else?
- 1:15:07Like, what do you know? Because I find it odd that that
- 1:15:11that that relationship, which I think is so important, is sort
- 1:15:14of dropped when it, their drama begins and ends with him.
- 1:15:20Yes. Or begins and ends with their
- 1:15:22relationship. And so I think that if you
- 1:15:25wanted to give her more to do and create a little bit more of
- 1:15:29a mystery or at least a better commentary around fate or
- 1:15:34choice, a free will or what have you, which I think is like sort
- 1:15:38of what's going on here. Like that relationship would
- 1:15:41have been much more interesting to explore.
- 1:15:42And then you can have long. So on the side dealing with his
- 1:15:45like it's so hard to be a king sort of narrative.
- 1:15:48Yeah. And then and then you know, or
- 1:15:51you just have to give it to him and you just got to let it like
- 1:15:54it's just got to be his. 100% I don't.
- 1:15:58I don't have anything to add to that.
- 1:15:59Yes, 100%. That was something that really
- 1:16:02frustrated me on 1st watch that there wasn't this connection
- 1:16:06that she made with the astrologer.
- 1:16:08She just recognized him as his drinking partner out on the dock
- 1:16:12in episode one and she goes up to him is like what are you
- 1:16:15doing here? But she asked all these, like,
- 1:16:16series of questions and he's just like.
- 1:16:19Wink, wink. Ha ha.
- 1:16:20He he you need to behave. And that's it.
- 1:16:24That's all we get from them two together.
- 1:16:27He's just like, you need to like simmer down and follow the rules
- 1:16:31here. That's how you're going to live.
- 1:16:33And honestly, what the fuck is that like?
- 1:16:38Because essentially they've introduced another time
- 1:16:40traveler. He had this whole, he said in
- 1:16:43front of the Princess. Like, oh, I had this, you know.
- 1:16:47I experienced when I was five years old.
- 1:16:48I drowned and died and came back to life and I saw the future
- 1:16:53basically. And I saw like flying planes.
- 1:16:55And he's basically the Leonardo da Vinci of Korea over here
- 1:16:58because he had this experience and went to the future and saw
- 1:17:01airplanes in quantacosa and we don't fucking return to that.
- 1:17:06It is so frustrating to see these seeds that they planted
- 1:17:12not come to fruition and they didn't do anything with them.
- 1:17:16They didn't have his who interact with the astrologer
- 1:17:19until the very last episode, when she's back in the present
- 1:17:22day and he seems to recognize her.
- 1:17:25What the fuck is that about? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:28What is that about? He fully does.
- 1:17:30Yeah. And and I mean can we just shout
- 1:17:33out Kim, Sun Sun Ken. Yeah, for a minute like, I mean
- 1:17:36I do like he is, I'm on record that he is like one of my
- 1:17:41favorites, right. I think that his his performance
- 1:17:43in DP is just absolutely stellar and I'm so very upset that he's
- 1:17:49kind of been replaced. But I mean, he's really good in
- 1:17:55this. He's obviously a very competent
- 1:17:57actor, but even his performance is kind of uneven.
- 1:18:00Like he almost like he almost just really starts to like
- 1:18:03really peek out, but he pulls back just in time that it
- 1:18:06doesn't get too bonkers like the rest of the drama.
- 1:18:09And I think that I think that if he like, he certainly could have
- 1:18:13handled a much bigger part than just like offering exposition,
- 1:18:19providing cautionary tales, or giving like solo pep talks
- 1:18:23about, like, you know, feeling insecure about his scar.
- 1:18:26You know, he doesn't really get that much to do, despite the
- 1:18:30fact that he seems like such a seminal character as somebody
- 1:18:33who opens a. Yep.
- 1:18:35I got nothing to add to that either because yeah, I also
- 1:18:37just, I I also just love him and I really hope that he gets like
- 1:18:44a drama, like like I hope he has a career like Lee Sungmin where
- 1:18:47he just gets like a a. Miss saying oh fair.
- 1:18:50Oh yeah, absolutely. I think there's definitely
- 1:18:52something for him because he's led dramas in ensemble pieces
- 1:18:59and he's such a powerhouse. Like honestly, he is a veteran
- 1:19:04actor. He.
- 1:19:05Was better than A lot of the Princess Princess were acting
- 1:19:10throughout the show and he didn't get much to do, period.
- 1:19:14They had this moment in episode 12, I think, where she says I
- 1:19:18wish this were a dream. I wish I could wake up and not
- 1:19:21remember any of this, and I find that kind of shit really
- 1:19:23annoying because it's not foreshadowing, It's literally
- 1:19:27what happened. I wish that like people knew
- 1:19:30like the better definition of foreshadowing, which is not just
- 1:19:33don't just tell me what happens later.
- 1:19:35And then when you rewatch whatever it is, like the movie,
- 1:19:37the TV show, you're like, oh, I should have known because they
- 1:19:40told us what happens. Foreshadowing is not that.
- 1:19:43It's way more subtle than that. And I think it's cheap, like,
- 1:19:48it's cheap writing to just have this, have her say this in
- 1:19:51episode 12. And then of course, we're
- 1:19:54completely surprised that they make it all a dream at the end
- 1:20:00in episodes 20I. I don't know how you feel about
- 1:20:07that, but I'm upset. I just feel like, I I feel like
- 1:20:11I was watching that show and I wanted to wake up from the
- 1:20:15nightmare of bad acting. Yes.
- 1:20:19Yeah. But then you have scenes like
- 1:20:23this, like the one in episode 12 where there's a time jump of
- 1:20:26like 2 years. Because of course there is.
- 1:20:29And they have this reunion scene between hey So and Wong So where
- 1:20:33she's like hanging up linens white linen and she sees one so
- 1:20:38one so in between the white sheets that are blowing in the
- 1:20:41breeze. And then she like freezes and
- 1:20:44looks over again and he's not there anymore.
- 1:20:46She's she's like, OK great. I'm seeing things.
- 1:20:48But then she turns back. He starts talking to her and
- 1:20:52then gives her a back hug and says that he misses her.
- 1:20:56And this is exactly what you wanted to hear because she had
- 1:20:59just reunited with the 8th Prince, and the 8th Prince did
- 1:21:02not tell her that he missed her. And she asked specifically,
- 1:21:06like, did you miss me? And he said, yeah and she's
- 1:21:09like, OK, that's enough. So like, that's like the her
- 1:21:12baseline is like, if you haven't seen me for a long time, tell me
- 1:21:15that you missed me. And Wang so does this without
- 1:21:19obviously being prompted and he makes her feel wanted.
- 1:21:24And of course all of these near death experiences that she has,
- 1:21:28he's there for her and helps her and that just sways her.
- 1:21:32That's why she starts liking him.
- 1:21:33Besides the whole pity factor that he's just had a hard life
- 1:21:37and she gets it. Although to be fair, she doesn't
- 1:21:40really have much choice. Like those other Princess are
- 1:21:44real donkeys. Honestly, they're all various
- 1:21:48levels of unacceptable. Terrible.
- 1:21:53Unacceptable. Undesirables, Yes.
- 1:21:56Yeah, the dying king. So King Pedro, He says he calls
- 1:22:02her in and he's dying. And he says do not get so hung
- 1:22:05up on the future that you lose what you have now.
- 1:22:07But he figures out that she's special and probably knows the
- 1:22:12future. And I'm like, how?
- 1:22:15How the hell did he know that he barely interacted with?
- 1:22:19Jesus. And for some reason he just
- 1:22:22defined that. She's just like the astrologer,
- 1:22:26who again, she barely hangs out with, barely has a word in.
- 1:22:29Well, I mean, she's being spied on by all of these different
- 1:22:33people, right? Like, you know, like Chehran,
- 1:22:35who is her lady and waiting or whatever.
- 1:22:37I don't know what it's called in this.
- 1:22:40Like she's spying on her and then remember like, you know,
- 1:22:42like the like long looks. Mother brings that book to long,
- 1:22:48so to say, like, look. Your girlfriend's a, like a
- 1:22:51crazy person. Look like she because she's
- 1:22:53written a diary and hang book. Not in sort of like traditional
- 1:22:57Chinese writing, right. But like people are like, oh
- 1:22:59like you know, she's obviously like like she's obviously
- 1:23:02something weirdo for the future like Dumber.
- 1:23:05She can't be queen. I like that's your biggest
- 1:23:08problem like that. She can't be queen.
- 1:23:13Like maybe she's a friggin alien.
- 1:23:15Like, I don't know, like they just don't seem that worked up.
- 1:23:19Other than like she can't be clean.
- 1:23:21Like, how do you know this person isn't some, like,
- 1:23:24monster? Yeah, Yeah, they could they make
- 1:23:28the jump, too. She's from the future real
- 1:23:30quick. Before, just.
- 1:23:33I mean, where's the witch hunt? You know what I'm saying?
- 1:23:36Like, where's the, like, backward thinking of the year
- 1:23:39923? But I'm expecting, right, the
- 1:23:43king is somehow very astute and is like, Oh yeah, it seems like
- 1:23:46you're from the future. It's like, why did you think she
- 1:23:49was from the future? What has she done that made you
- 1:23:54think she was from the future besides writing and hung goal?
- 1:23:57And what expressing like views about freedom, Like that's it.
- 1:24:02That's all Home Girl was doing. I just want one husband.
- 1:24:08That's they're like, she's she's nuts.
- 1:24:11Right. Right.
- 1:24:13The. I don't know.
- 1:24:16I don't. I just want to skip to the end.
- 1:24:17What? I like.
- 1:24:18What Say. You sure?
- 1:24:19OK. Because we get like this.
- 1:24:23It's like really messy. Like the third Prince, he falls
- 1:24:26off a Cliff. He comes back to life because
- 1:24:28he's fine. And they put this mullet on him.
- 1:24:32The guyliner Prince, he comes back with this mullet.
- 1:24:36And I'm like, that's criminal and he ends up dying like
- 1:24:40there's a bunch of Coos cuz King Pedro dies, the Crown Prince
- 1:24:44gets drowned after mercury poisoning, then the third Prince
- 1:24:48with the mullet and the guyliner comes and actually just goes
- 1:24:51crazy. And then finally it's Wang So's
- 1:24:53turn to be king. And I mean, he's quickly just
- 1:24:59deranged, and he starts killing people off people that oppose
- 1:25:03him in the court. He's killing off people's
- 1:25:05families. He's exiling Tong, which is
- 1:25:08Jesu's character. He's like, what is he like, the
- 1:25:1014th Prince or something like that?
- 1:25:14And for some reason, Hesu is blindsided by his behavior when
- 1:25:24he's on the throne. This leads to, you know, their
- 1:25:28separation. She wants to get out.
- 1:25:30She's finally like, I need to leave the palace.
- 1:25:33She has this illness that has suddenly become come to the
- 1:25:36forefront like this Palpitations and these panic attacks that she
- 1:25:40was happening having are now a full on health crisis and it
- 1:25:46just goes downhill from there. That could be diagnosed with
- 1:25:49with the doctor taking your pulse.
- 1:25:52I'm rolling my eyes because, like, there's just OK like I am
- 1:25:58this is the least. Like, there's so many things
- 1:26:01that just make no sense. Beckyon dies.
- 1:26:06That's a that's a whole death scene.
- 1:26:07That I remember was that he's on the run for whatever reason.
- 1:26:12He's just being pursued by the Guideliner Prince who's now
- 1:26:16king, and he dies with his wife. And the wife was like finally
- 1:26:21getting in his good graces and he's like, finally cared about
- 1:26:24her and it was this whole thing. Although sweetly sweet relief
- 1:26:27for the audience though, because that performance by Beckyon.
- 1:26:32Will go down in history as like literally like a low point for
- 1:26:37like. He'll never be cast again, I
- 1:26:39don't think. It's just it's been but six
- 1:26:42years and he still hasn't been anything.
- 1:26:47Yeah, that's so sad. Like when he had those puppets
- 1:26:51out, when he had those puppets out.
- 1:26:53I just, I really felt like, you know, like, should I just give
- 1:26:57up on life now, right. Because you're like trying to
- 1:27:00cheer up Hissy with like some puppets, like I don't know what
- 1:27:04what in the Mr. Rogers was going on in this show.
- 1:27:07I I have no idea. And then in like even when you
- 1:27:10like, like and like it just sort of snowballs like the the the
- 1:27:14bad performances just kind of start to snowball like at the
- 1:27:16end. OK, now that we're kind of
- 1:27:18getting closer to the end and we kind of know what happens IE Sue
- 1:27:21dies right and and. You know tragically and it is
- 1:27:27very sad but like when you know so comes to collect the urn you
- 1:27:34know and he's obviously like sort of very distraught over the
- 1:27:38the death of her and then like Jisu and like Namji Hook.
- 1:27:43Nam namju hook are just like talking like 2 wooden, you know,
- 1:27:48fence posts. And well, you don't want to just
- 1:27:51like spirals out around them like it.
- 1:27:53Like it really is like a like a, a perverse watch with those,
- 1:28:00like those princely performances.
- 1:28:02Like, yeah, yeah. Anyways, I just had to be on
- 1:28:05record. No, no no, that's totally fine
- 1:28:07because I agree with you man, the there's so many red flags,
- 1:28:16right? Like after he becomes king and
- 1:28:19he spirals even before she dies, he's like telling her, oh, you
- 1:28:25have to get permission to talk to anybody, visit anybody.
- 1:28:27Red flag Wong Sue kills everything that everybody that
- 1:28:31opposes him and he's just he becomes king literally so
- 1:28:36easily. Like there's no fighting, it's
- 1:28:38just comically easy for him to get the throne.
- 1:28:42Finally, his brother just kills over.
- 1:28:43We don't even know what was wrong with him.
- 1:28:47And then he marries his sister and some were in their soul.
- 1:28:56And his niece and his niece. That was before he married his
- 1:28:59niece when she who was a child. And then he marries his half
- 1:29:03sister who becomes queen and the servant dies, shed young, dies,
- 1:29:09she gets beaten to death, the Queen Mother dies.
- 1:29:11It's a whole thing because Wang so jealously and spitefully
- 1:29:14takes care of her by himself and fulfills the vow that he made to
- 1:29:19her early on in the show that she'd only see him.
- 1:29:22So there's that. That's toxic.
- 1:29:26And do you remember Solhyan, who was like the Gee Sang who was
- 1:29:34doing the sword dance? How could I forget?
- 1:29:36Yeah. It's like it plays out my dreams
- 1:29:40every night. I am so sorry.
- 1:29:44I oh man, that was that killed me.
- 1:29:47Your response killed me. Solion kills herself to quell
- 1:29:52some unrest with her enslaved back to people because she's a
- 1:29:54Princess of a of a conquered land.
- 1:29:57And Nam Duhiuk's character, who I this whole relationship that
- 1:30:03he had with her, I would have just caught it entirely out of
- 1:30:06the show if it was me. Because he for some reason had
- 1:30:11this fiery love for Myung Su, the cousin who died.
- 1:30:16Then he fell in love with Solhion, who was this slave, he
- 1:30:20saying. And then she like kind of rose
- 1:30:22up the ranks. And there was this complicated
- 1:30:24relationship which they never really he like, doesn't get it.
- 1:30:28And he said that after she died, he was like, I didn't really
- 1:30:30understand like why she was so conflicted and why she never
- 1:30:33really wanted to be with me because his people kill her
- 1:30:38people, her people kill his people.
- 1:30:40It was like this whole fucking mess.
- 1:30:42And he just like, didn't care. He was like, I just want to be
- 1:30:44with you mess. I would have cut that out
- 1:30:47completely. But she dies.
- 1:30:50Becca Which is? And does she?
- 1:30:51Does she die to like, does she like die to save his life?
- 1:30:56I think what it is, well, that she's it's unclear if she did it
- 1:31:01specifically to save his life because he was going to go lead
- 1:31:03the army and he was an artist. He had no military experience
- 1:31:07whatsoever. He was just like going to be a
- 1:31:08sitting duck out there with a sword.
- 1:31:10And it looked like this is so badly explained, but it looked
- 1:31:15like she had made a deal with Wong.
- 1:31:17So the king to, yeah, like had these articles of like
- 1:31:24pacification or something like that with Wong.
- 1:31:26So for the back chair people, I don't know how she negotiated
- 1:31:30this without telling the King Wong so that she is the Princess
- 1:31:34of this nation that they're trying to like pacify I because
- 1:31:38he was like, I didn't know she was like the Princess of Beck
- 1:31:40chair whatever. And I'm like, how the fuck do
- 1:31:43you not know that she was the Princess and the revered royalty
- 1:31:47of this conquered land and all these slaves are trying to
- 1:31:52emancipate themselves. And she was like, she wanted
- 1:31:55rights for them. And I think that her death was
- 1:32:00just to I don't even know why she killed herself, honestly.
- 1:32:03Like it just doesn't make sense. But.
- 1:32:05Like this is the thing. Like, it almost seemed like a
- 1:32:07distraction so that they would be sad instead of mad.
- 1:32:12Like you know what I mean? Like that so that Beck Beck
- 1:32:14wouldn't have to go out and fight the and that they would
- 1:32:18stop like burning nobles houses down I guess.
- 1:32:21And then they they would stop rebelling essentially.
- 1:32:23And then and they would just be sad instead of like mad, which I
- 1:32:27think is so such a weak. And like unceremonious ending to
- 1:32:32a one of the only female characters that like was
- 1:32:36supposed to like you know be sort of important and like
- 1:32:40contribute to the story, you know, like like for us to sort
- 1:32:44of be that like wonder what was her deal after watching 20
- 1:32:50efforts of the show twice. Like, I really think that it's
- 1:32:54like, problematic when like, this is one of the only female
- 1:32:58characters. Yeah.
- 1:32:59And we just don't even know what she was supposed to do other
- 1:33:02than like sort of come in and like, give he sue messages once
- 1:33:05in a while. Like, what was she even doing in
- 1:33:06the palace? I don't get it.
- 1:33:08I don't know what her position was, and yeah, me neither.
- 1:33:11Why would a slave rise up like his was?
- 1:33:14I'm just shaking my head. I can't.
- 1:33:17Anyway, Long story short, he Sue dies after giving birth to the
- 1:33:21King's child in secret, and he's all caught up.
- 1:33:25He has this like crazy. When he picks up the urn, he's
- 1:33:28just like in a whirlwind of emotions.
- 1:33:33And the other two are just kind of like like, I don't know, I
- 1:33:37can't even describe how they were acting.
- 1:33:38It just wasn't right. And that's it.
- 1:33:41Like, she gets catapulted back into her body in the present day
- 1:33:46and she was like, oh, what a bad dream.
- 1:33:48So they made it seem like she drowned, was in a coma for a
- 1:33:52year, and then woke up and went back to her life, not knowing
- 1:33:58anything. Yeah, and she was having, like,
- 1:34:01these weird, amorphous dreams about Wong so, and glimpses of
- 1:34:06her experience back in Cordell. And like, that was it.
- 1:34:11Yeah, just like wakes up crying all the time.
- 1:34:14Yeah. I mean, her tale is one of
- 1:34:18tragedy. For never was there a tale of
- 1:34:24more woe than Mrs. Juliet and her Romeo.
- 1:34:30Exactly, Exactly. Anyway, it was stupid and
- 1:34:35everybody lost their minds. Everybody lost their shit with
- 1:34:39this ending and the way that she would just casually walks into
- 1:34:43this exhibit that seemed to be in the mall, right where she
- 1:34:47worked at the cosmetic counter and remembers suddenly remembers
- 1:34:53everything. And all of the paintings that
- 1:34:56are on the wall are of specific moments that happened in her
- 1:35:00life back in Corral. Doesn't make one fucking lake of
- 1:35:04sense. Like who is painting these?
- 1:35:07Who was there to witness all these things and paint these
- 1:35:10scenes? It made no sense.
- 1:35:12And then she sees that portrait of Wang So in front of the
- 1:35:16palace and starts crying and saying, oh, I'm sorry I left you
- 1:35:21alone. And he says that he will find
- 1:35:26her. I think he says something to the
- 1:35:28effect that he's going to find her.
- 1:35:30Wherever you are, I will find you, my Hesu.
- 1:35:33And he never does. Like he never makes good on that
- 1:35:38promise. It's strongly implied that he is
- 1:35:42there in the present day and that he has some sort of
- 1:35:46reincarnation that's going to find Jesus on behalf of like his
- 1:35:50past self, the King one. So and that never happens.
- 1:35:55However, if you have gone on YouTube and looked up the
- 1:36:00alternate ending of Scarlet Hart Rio, you will see that there is
- 1:36:05a proper ending where he is in the present time and he makes a
- 1:36:11connection with Jesus in the present day.
- 1:36:16And that is I think the ending that they should have gone with.
- 1:36:19That was the only ending that made sense to me and they didn't
- 1:36:23keep with it. I am not sure why the sea drama
- 1:36:26Scarlet Hart does have a season 2 where it's all set in the
- 1:36:29present day. I hear it's not that great, but
- 1:36:32that's beside the point. The hint of that second season
- 1:36:36of the sea drama of that original story should have been
- 1:36:39left, I think, in Scarlet. How we own mood lovers.
- 1:36:43What say you? I mean, I am, you know, there
- 1:36:47like the ending was rotten, like just just really rotten.
- 1:36:52And and it's not that like, you know, tragedy provides catharsis
- 1:36:56in a lot of different ways, right, You know, through justice
- 1:36:59or like hope or like whatever. None of that was delivered.
- 1:37:03So, like this is a real tragedy that doesn't?
- 1:37:06Like, allow the audience any catharsis, which I'm actually
- 1:37:09kind of a fan of. And I actually think that is
- 1:37:13actually pretty prominent in Korean cultural production and
- 1:37:16something that a lot of Korean directors and and writers are
- 1:37:20actually really good at. Like sometimes you do have just
- 1:37:23have to sit and suck, you know, sometimes like just live up to
- 1:37:26any expect. And so it's not even that that
- 1:37:28that discipline. It's just that, like the rotten
- 1:37:31ending comes from the fact that they just thought this was UN.
- 1:37:35From the get go and then it was always gonna be have a second
- 1:37:39season and so they made a really unsatisfying fail and then a
- 1:37:43second season was coming. So that's not really, it's not
- 1:37:49really even playing with the subversion of catharsis.
- 1:37:52It's just like. We're going to make more money
- 1:37:55with a second season, so we'll just throw some, I'm sorry to
- 1:37:58say it. Felt like to me, Yeah, yeah, I I
- 1:38:01can get behind that. I think that there's been talk
- 1:38:05amongst the the actors who like there's certain interviews that
- 1:38:09I U has done with Easy and Key where they're sort of surprised
- 1:38:13by the outpouring of love that the show has gotten, especially
- 1:38:16with overseas fans, right with us in the US, with people in
- 1:38:21China, Malaysia, everywhere that the show did really well besides
- 1:38:24Korea. They're just stunned by the the
- 1:38:27response that they've gotten and how famous it is overseas.
- 1:38:32And they've been asked multiple times like is there going to be
- 1:38:35a Season 2? And they're like, well, we're
- 1:38:37not opposed to doing a Season 2. The stars just basically have to
- 1:38:41align for everyone to come back together.
- 1:38:42Because like I said, everyone is leaps and bounds more famous,
- 1:38:46Leaps and bounds more busy than they were in 2016.
- 1:38:51And it would be pretty difficult to herd all these cats again and
- 1:38:58do some sort of season 2 in the present day.
- 1:39:02And that's all she'd have to recast Jung.
- 1:39:05Then you'd have to recast people like Jisu obviously has been
- 1:39:09cancelled for his bullying scandal.
- 1:39:11Whether or not he did it, he's just been cancelled in Korea, so
- 1:39:15he'd have to be recast. And there's a lot of things.
- 1:39:19Obviously Namjik is in his military service right now, so
- 1:39:23he wouldn't even be able to do it this year or next year and
- 1:39:27the list goes on. It is difficult to do a Season
- 1:39:312, especially now after they have all found a measure of
- 1:39:35success. And I'm not sure anyone wants to
- 1:39:40like these actors. I mean, would want to come back
- 1:39:42to this story considering how widely panned it was in Korea.
- 1:39:47Oh yeah. So I don't blame them for just
- 1:39:50being diplomatic in their answers and saying, Oh yeah,
- 1:39:53like we wouldn't mind coming back.
- 1:39:55Like, we had so much fun on set. We had such a great time making
- 1:39:59it. We gave it everything we had.
- 1:40:01But I mean, there's there's just, I don't think they'll ever
- 1:40:05be a Season 2, personally. As it is I you single handedly
- 1:40:10created Korean skin care and cosmetics, watched no less than
- 1:40:15like 5 people die personally and simultaneously affected history
- 1:40:21in the negative and reinvented King Wong so historical image
- 1:40:25for the better. And lastly, she was just
- 1:40:27completely unconcerned about the whole ass baby she left behind
- 1:40:31in careels. That is not her concern at all.
- 1:40:35When she sees the image of Wang So in the final scene, she's
- 1:40:40just like I'm sorry I left you, It's like you had a child.
- 1:40:44Where is your concern for the child that you had with this man
- 1:40:50as well? So, lots of questions, very few
- 1:40:53answers, and quite honestly, one of the most ridiculous shows
- 1:40:59that I've seen get insanely popular outside of Korea.
- 1:41:06I'm not sure if you had anything else to add.
- 1:41:08This would be the time, Robin, to just let loose.
- 1:41:13No, I mean, I think that we probably hit that.
- 1:41:17I was thinking this episode. I think, yeah, I I'm unsure.
- 1:41:23That anybody with the level would ever agree to be in of
- 1:41:27this, which is really unfortunate because despite like
- 1:41:32disdain for this drama and have so many questions about like its
- 1:41:38validity or reason for. It be becoming so famous.
- 1:41:43I really do want to see that second season.
- 1:41:45I really want to see these characters in like sort of a
- 1:41:47modern wow like setting. Like I would love to see how
- 1:41:51they would play. Like I would love to see how
- 1:41:53they would play out and like what kind of like would it be
- 1:41:56some sort of just like table story or would it be like I I
- 1:42:01just I would be curious as how and also be interested in
- 1:42:05sitting widely panned silly. 20 episode drama because I have
- 1:42:13time on my hand for that. OK, So on that note, I want to
- 1:42:26thank you Robin for coming on this show and for being really,
- 1:42:30really giving of your time and watching this 20 episode show
- 1:42:34again. One that we really sort of took
- 1:42:39as a joke and it made waves and is a very difficult to find we.
- 1:42:46I watched this on drama Cool it is nowhere on streaming and
- 1:42:50that's because I think the rights went down with the ship.
- 1:42:53It was licensed to Drama Cool and the Drama Cool was bought
- 1:42:55out and so I think Warner Brothers bought bought
- 1:43:00DramaFever and then sank it for a tax write off.
- 1:43:04And so I don't see Warner Brothers trying to put this K
- 1:43:09drama up anywhere if they still retain the rates today.
- 1:43:12It is not high priority to put this 2016 K drama anywhere, but
- 1:43:16if it does land somewhere, I will be the first to let you
- 1:43:19guys know if you guys want to watch it.
- 1:43:21But if you're okay with some popups you can watch Moon Lover,
- 1:43:26Scarlet, Hart, Rio on Drama Cool.
- 1:43:29A lot of shows are on Drama Cool.
- 1:43:30Tons of shows but little less than reputable.
- 1:43:33But it doesn't hurt, in a pinch, to watch stuff on drama.
- 1:43:35Cool. But Robin, we're at the end of
- 1:43:40this. Where can people find you
- 1:43:41online? Yeah, I'm I don't have a huge
- 1:43:44online presence. I do have my website which is
- 1:43:48sort of randomly updated blog. It's W w.com.
- 1:43:52You can find me Instagram at at XI Guess, which is.
- 1:43:57But I'm not a fan. Yeah, neither am I.
- 1:43:59Neither am I I don't. Don't find me on Don't talk to
- 1:44:02me on Twitter. Talk to me on TikTok or
- 1:44:04Instagram and please reach out to Robin if you have questions
- 1:44:09about moon lovers or just want to chat.
- 1:44:11I think she's most active on Instagram.
- 1:44:14Don't come talk to us on Twitter.
- 1:44:15Like I said, and again, this was fun, but that's the end of
- 1:44:21season four of Tevac. We will be back when we are
- 1:44:25back. So thank you for joining me,
- 1:44:28Robin. And that's it.
- 1:44:30That's been our show. I'm Jessica and this has been
- 1:44:32the Tebaki Rambles podcast. No.
