- 0:46Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:51I am Curtis Wilson and with my partner.
- 0:54Ryan, Sigler, how are you doing, buddy, buddy, National
- 0:58Championship Monday, watching the game.
- 1:03I'm on the coaches film room for anybody who's never watched
- 1:07coaches, film room on the national championship game.
- 1:09If you love football, you are missing out my man across the
- 1:14way from me here. Can definitely can confirm that.
- 1:17Yeah, so was watching it to start before we fired at the
- 1:21podcast here because I got it on mute now but Hugh freeze is very
- 1:27good at this. He is really good noses, stuff.
- 1:33The until all the guy that can talk offense and really
- 1:36understand various levels of the concepts, and I mean, he's
- 1:40knocking it out of the park, but he's doing it, not quite, he's
- 1:44not digging too far into the like that.
- 1:46Coach Jurgen were not real, a person can't follow.
- 1:50Well, not at all anybody that bike either like warm level or
- 1:55study that some of football. You can understand what all four
- 1:58of these guys are talking about, all good, all making good points
- 2:04you know it's the funnest thing to watch.
- 2:07I look forward to it every year. I wish they would bring a bunch
- 2:11of old heads in every Saturday night with their per pound.
- 2:16Don't espnu's because I would watch it over the main
- 2:18broadcast, no disrespect to her beer, Fowler like those guys,
- 2:22but when you get this, you get into the grind, you get into the
- 2:27play calls when they talk about avoiding zones route Concepts,
- 2:32you know, and then they show the replay and you're like, holy
- 2:36moly like now you see why that happened?
- 2:40So loving it 21-14 Bama but how State on the The doorstep really
- 2:49competitive game so far. So I think we all wanted.
- 2:54There was a moment there where I thought of Alabama was about to
- 2:57give a sizable lead when they had that big play.
- 3:00Big turnover, and Ohio State, punched it in, tied it up, and
- 3:05looks like we're going to get a back and forth.
- 3:07I think our our predictions are still still in the realm of
- 3:12safety right now, so we'll we'll celebrate that.
- 3:15Hopefully, Yeah it's true. 12 weeks man since we yeah we now
- 3:21obviously y'all we probably talked to maybe each other when
- 3:27text me phone calls here and there probably are wives.
- 3:30Don't know, very true, very true.
- 3:37Last week we were going to record but it got us right in
- 3:41the behind late. We were going to press record on
- 3:44Thursday. We start texting If I ignore
- 3:46this first week back at work, you know what it was.
- 3:51It was definitely harder and busier than I anticipated.
- 3:56It was one of those things where I thought when we got to carve
- 3:58out a little bit of time here, a little bit of time there and get
- 4:01myself ready to go and then I looked at it and the further we
- 4:04got and we come like I haven't had any time that I've had my
- 4:09week. Phil, we had something big we
- 4:12were working on coming, right out of the holidays.
- 4:15So It was kind of kind of stressful there, but, you know,
- 4:18we push through. Exactly.
- 4:20We got through, we decided to call a timeout and inaudible
- 4:25last Thursday. Instead of recording, we both
- 4:27went to sleep at nine. They're just taking a fight, but
- 4:36a lot of news since we've been gone folks, and we're going to
- 4:40try to hit all the topics, but also on this episode We are
- 4:45going through the coach, keep the Hokie coaching staff and
- 4:49we're giving the bounds of recorder grades, which is going
- 4:53to be our grades combined in. There are individual grades with
- 4:55some pieces here. And there, we're going to do
- 4:57every coach on staff. All 11, some we parked on, in
- 5:03the season, you're going to hear some more points but then a few
- 5:05other things as well. Lots of yellow on the field
- 5:08right there. So let's start Braun, lets start
- 5:11first with some of the stuff that gone on several weeks ago.
- 5:14Let's talk about But a daily transfer the safety out of
- 5:17Vanderbilt transfers to the Hokies which you had said to me,
- 5:23and I'm not sure if you set it on the Pod but you talked about
- 5:28safety being a position in need especially when dividing, even
- 5:31dip needed safety, help got some safety help here.
- 5:34So I'm glad to see that. Here's a guy that was projected
- 5:39starter at Vanderbilt before, opting out the 2020 season due
- 5:42to covid, you know. No decent-sized.
- 5:46A safety probably a little lighter than we're used to, but
- 5:49still still in that same mold and You know, has had some
- 5:55success there at Vanderbilt playing in the SEC.
- 5:58So I think this is a good ad for us, definitely a need position.
- 6:02I feel like a guy that can be least, come on, can't come on
- 6:05campus and contribute even if he's not kind of that first
- 6:08level starter for us. So we'll see what the offseason
- 6:11holds for that. But I like the pickup because we
- 6:14needed safety help whether it's front end or depth.
- 6:19Yeah. And with him it's a guy who like
- 6:21you said, play in the SEC I mean, 17 career starts all its
- 6:26safety, you know, over 100 tackles, you know, a good number
- 6:30of tackles for loss interceptions, forced fumbles on
- 6:35again, opted, out this year at a Warner Robins Georgia
- 6:38originally. So, I mean, it feels a need, it
- 6:42brings Dias. He's a starter just so you can
- 6:46get Devin back outside. I mean, I think you pencil a
- 6:49minute starter it, one of the positions there and you No, let
- 6:53him essentially lose it. I'll be.
- 6:55I think, based on his the snap she's guiding thus far at the
- 6:59position versus playing out of position.
- 7:01Like Devin was I think that should give him a leg up there
- 7:05and I think we're going to need Devon and other positions
- 7:09potentially just because of his versatility and the different
- 7:12things he can do now especially after getting a season playing
- 7:15in there at safety for her. Good good chunk of snaps there
- 7:21he's definitely our most versatile.
- 7:24Defender in the secondary now. So, I think having him kind of
- 7:27have that swing Reserve role would be a good thing for us.
- 7:31Absolutely, alright, more good news for the Hokies a trio of
- 7:37Hokies, returning, Bill Maher returns let it get Smith returns
- 7:41to Shawn Crawford returns. I mean, to me, I look that makes
- 7:47me feel better about the defensive line and the offensive
- 7:49line because essentially the three guys were all starters
- 7:52last year, Brian. Yeah.
- 7:54And those are two things we had talked about where depth was a
- 7:57concern for us was across the defensive line and now with some
- 8:01of the transfers we've had across the offensive line,
- 8:04getting front end guys, coming back.
- 8:07Is only going to be a good thing.
- 8:09Yeah regardless of how everybody else is progressing, regardless
- 8:12of who we bring in from the transfer portal.
- 8:14Yeah and it kind of the way I see now with you know the
- 8:18defensive line counting bar know you've got really Three or four
- 8:23stars on the defensive line back.
- 8:25Now on the offensive line with the addition of Johnny from
- 8:30Maryland. Yep you have for starters on the
- 8:33offensive line yeah you know the interior is kind of going to be
- 8:37settled I'm sure they'll be some position battles to nude on the
- 8:40right tackle. Yep you lose your left tackle
- 8:42but ain't nobody questioned and are so leaving.
- 8:45Yeah, you're essentially ever to fill in a tackle now instead of
- 8:47having to fill in multiple positions across the hood.
- 8:51Exactly? Right. this was a kind of a
- 8:54shocker to me, but I think well, one of the guys I feel like
- 8:59should go the other guy I'm trying to figure it out.
- 9:01Both Oscar Bradburn and Brian Johnson.
- 9:03Not returning for Oscar. I get it Oscar's a senior Oscar
- 9:10is from Australia. He's not from the United States
- 9:13so why not try to make it in the NFL, you know, do it?
- 9:19Yeah, Johnson on the other hand, I don't get it.
- 9:24I don't he's a solid. Collegiate kicker, he hit some
- 9:29fifty yards, he made some clutch kicks, but the way I compare it
- 9:34is so we will say well look at Joey slime.
- 9:36Look how good. Joey slice doing when balls used
- 9:40to come off. Joey sli's foot, you knew he had
- 9:45an FL power. You can see how hard there are
- 9:50times, they put him at like 59 yards and he'd put it there.
- 9:52The accuracy was off. Once he got the accuracy,
- 9:56clearly, he's just signed an extension with the Panthers.
- 9:59It was the consistency act like he walked.
- 10:01He would hit him. He just wasn't always 100%.
- 10:07If it was under 40, you were still like, well, he might he
- 10:10might shank one here, you might shank one there but he was
- 10:13consistent enough and he always had enough leg and once he kind
- 10:16of worked out that consistency, he's done very well in the NFL
- 10:20Johnson. I mean the only thing I'm going
- 10:22to say is that he put out some good tape this year.
- 10:25He did turn and I'm he might be wondering if this is the best
- 10:29tape he's going to have going into a an offseason.
- 10:34It's true man. And you don't I know where some
- 10:36of these guys are, I think Johnson was graduating to, so
- 10:38again, it could be similar to Hewitt.
- 10:42Listen, I've got my degree. I want to give it a shot.
- 10:45I don't want to wait an extra year.
- 10:49I'm just going to go if I get lucky great, if not essential, I
- 10:54can start my life after football weather, you know, that's in the
- 10:57career field, they're choosing or coaching or something like
- 11:01that. Now, had a commitment by Ron,
- 11:06that was an off the radar commitment, but when a guy, like
- 11:11the white Vic speaks highly on a kid, you kind of take notice
- 11:16Samuel and banca out of South County.
- 11:19If you remember, South County. That's where the Van Dyke
- 11:21brothers, were from two very kind of, very good hockey
- 11:25players, but danke coming a 64 205-pound defensive back.
- 11:33Did you get a chance to look at any of his Tatum and he was
- 11:36Allstate, you know, trying to figure out
- 11:58on the radar at least they were getting kind of like Fringe.
- 12:02Power 5 Buzz, pretty much throughout the last two seasons.
- 12:07So I'm just I'm trying to figure out what out there.
- 12:10Had this guy so under the radar but you know when Dwight Vic
- 12:13gives you the the stamp I'm going to trust that, you know,
- 12:19this is this is a pwo situation. It looks like so we'll see how
- 12:24it goes but that we've got three corners that are in the 64
- 12:28range. I know, probably the McDonald
- 12:30twins are not going to be playing cornerback for.
- 12:32Us. But The concepts are there.
- 12:37What we're looking to do on the back end?
- 12:39When yeah, we're going to have four guys, but it's a lot of
- 12:42tall. We're starting to get some
- 12:44height on defense and guys that have link that can play with
- 12:48that wingspan. Yeah, work.
- 12:51Leverage at the line of scrimmage.
- 12:52If there's any sort of press element in there.
- 12:55And, you know, guys with range like that tackle better
- 12:59typically. Longo Divine Diablo body types.
- 13:09Like 63 64 100. And you know, we know Devon did.
- 13:15So act, like why nothing wrong with that?
- 13:18Nothing wrong with it at all Brawn.
- 13:20Well Brian is much too, there was good news.
- 13:23There is has been some bad news probably I'm not going to say
- 13:31this is the biggest, this is the biggest because of where he went
- 13:34Hendon hooker, commenced to Tennessee as a graduate transfer
- 13:39and if you Rockets up he's got who hears of it.
- 13:44Two years of Eligibility left. Obviously that happened in a
- 13:50couple of days later, the Tennessee allegations drop,
- 13:54which is kind of like and, you know, I have no issue with him
- 14:01going here and you get to them to a program that will be in the
- 14:04spotlight best of luck to him. Yeah.
- 14:07You know Guantanamo their old starter essentially moved out to
- 14:11Wazoo in the immediate backup transferred to Colorado.
- 14:16So the competition for him is a guy by the name of Brian Maher
- 14:21who was a three-star out of Ocala Florida.
- 14:24And the more interesting one is Harrison Bailey.
- 14:28Here are some Bailey Was a highly regarded.
- 14:34Number three, quarterback top 100 rated somewhere in the
- 14:40neighborhood of about a 95 on the four-star scale, so very
- 14:45hydrated guy out of the 2020 class.
- 14:49So I think what Tennessee is setting them up for is kind of
- 14:54good. Because if Bailey's not ready
- 14:58next year, dip you have someone and you essentially have a
- 15:01bridge guy at worst. And you potentially, if he shows
- 15:07out and wins the job and that's good for them and if he doesn't
- 15:11win the job, he's definitely a backup.
- 15:13You can count on me. So, I mean, it's a win, win for
- 15:16Tennessee. In this situation with with some
- 15:18of the transfers they've had leaving out of the program to
- 15:23get a guy like hand in the Ted, a lot of playing time has Poise
- 15:27and can can make some plays for you.
- 15:29So good for them, good for Hendon.
- 15:35You know, you're very good for me.
- 15:37All love to hit and I mean, you do what you got to do, man?
- 15:40There's no, you go be great. Yeah, exactly.
- 15:43You go, you'll be great. You know, I hope that allegation
- 15:47stuff isn't big. I hope it's not one of those
- 15:49things where it really, you know, hinders his career
- 15:53development going there and everything.
- 15:56Because what would really suck is if like the Pruitt coaching
- 15:59staff gets in trouble, they fire them all and he's like sitting
- 16:02here Lake. Who's the new coach commit to
- 16:07any of these guys. But then if it's Tennessee,
- 16:10they'll end up. Filling the power Hugh, freeze
- 16:15Part B, without somebody's going to exactly.
- 16:20So the next bit of bad news was our director of on-campus.
- 16:25Recruiting Alex, white returns to North Carolina.
- 16:29I have one thing to say, Brian, before you go one thing he's a
- 16:34fucking enemy spy. I'll tell you what it is and the
- 16:41more I looked at it, the more it made sense, here's someone that
- 16:44was asked to take a significant pay cut because of everything
- 16:48that's happening in the athletic department, with the budget cuts
- 16:51and her alma mater officer way more money do the same job.
- 16:58Just so happens to be North Carolina and we fucking hate
- 17:02those guys. So there you have, you know,
- 17:07it's, I mean, I get it. It's the alma mater P, so, you
- 17:11know, but we still have to mention it.
- 17:13It'll be interesting to see who The Hokies give into that role,
- 17:21you know, over the next couple weeks here, you know, is it
- 17:26something? I'm hoping we don't fall behind
- 17:28on this man because I mean this is a bad time for that type of
- 17:31transition. I feel like we were just making
- 17:34some good Headway with this type of thing.
- 17:37Even though we haven't been able to have folks on campus, having
- 17:41someone in that role is something that we needed for Or
- 17:46years and it was nice to finally have something like that.
- 17:49So I'm hoping we turn that back on.
- 17:52Turn it over real quick and get somebody else in house that can
- 17:56do the job that Alex has done over the last few months.
- 17:59It's very true. But again, it's just a part of
- 18:02the business and now it's going to have to be one of those
- 18:04things where, at least we know where her pay cut level was,
- 18:10that is one of the biggest upside because the room is
- 18:12there. So, I mean, I'm whether she was
- 18:15making, she was making Grant, you is going to go down to 70 at
- 18:19least you know where you're starting is.
- 18:21Yeah. You know, it's one of those
- 18:23things to do. You find somebody that might be
- 18:28associated with the program and just say Hey listen here's your
- 18:31opportunity, here's the money. Come back or maybe some kid
- 18:36there, I don't know, but they don't need to wait too long
- 18:39because knowing our luck, we won't have anybody in the role
- 18:42in the NCAA will dislike. Pull up in March 2000.
- 18:45Recruit has opened back on campus.
- 18:46Now come on. Yeah yeah we need to go ahead
- 18:50and strike on that while we can exactly all right one more bit
- 18:53of down and used before we get into really the big news of the
- 18:57day for us hokey fans Tori and gray gets hired by Shane to
- 19:02coach cornerbacks. Poor in who just a few weeks ago
- 19:07was fired along with Ron English.
- 19:09Another former Hokies coach from the University of Florida.
- 19:15I mean I'm not shocked. No I mean that as soon as he was
- 19:20gone I was like well if I mean unless we you know we are not in
- 19:25a dire need of a quarterbacks coach.
- 19:28He's probably going if he's not going back to the NFL, he's
- 19:30going to go to South Carolina and sure enough.
- 19:33South Carolina, it'd be dumb for for shame not to call him.
- 19:38I mean, you had to be stupid not to call the guy with that much
- 19:46success coaching cornerbacks in the college ranks is true and he
- 19:51has a, obviously, a long-standing relationship on
- 19:53the team. I mean, you've got to remember,
- 19:55torian was on the team when Shane was on the team.
- 19:57Yeah, late 90's. Then obviously a four year
- 20:00coaching on together when he's with his dad.
- 20:03Dad. So it makes sense where I feel
- 20:05sorry for those. I feel sorry for torian because
- 20:07I think Tori has a mind to be a defensive coordinator and I when
- 20:13he got fired and Shane would yet to name his guy was like, he
- 20:16should hire like make Tori in the DC given that Spiel.
- 20:20And then he hires the guy to Western Kentucky, then hires
- 20:23torian, you know, I don't know if it's one of those things
- 20:29where it's like he's going to be a positional coach all his life.
- 20:33It stinks because I think grave more than that.
- 20:38It's one of those things to Brian where I look back and I
- 20:41still wish to this day that in 2011, Frank and hung it up after
- 20:47an 11 win season after winning the Sugar Bowl.
- 20:50Guess we won that game. I don't care what the record.
- 20:52Books say, Danny Coale, caught the ball.
- 20:55You've got the damn ball. If he had turned it over to Bud.
- 20:58Torian probably gets his chance right there.
- 21:01Yeah. And we don't Don't know, that's,
- 21:03you know, revisionist history. You can write what happens.
- 21:06So, but so there's that kind of, bit of bad news, but Brian, we
- 21:13got good news, buddy. Yes, we did.
- 21:17Late this afternoon, Clemson Tigers, defensive tackle, Jordan
- 21:24Williams. Who had entered the portal
- 21:25commits to the Hokies. Williams, a 757 products out of
- 21:30cocks, where 757 time. Water hot water shit.
- 21:39You know, he was one of the guys back in class of 2017.
- 21:44They went after hard he came out as a top.
- 21:47You know, top 150 player. Here's a fine piece.
- 21:51He came out as a weak side defensive end guess where we
- 21:54wanted to put him in, why he didn't commit to us.
- 21:58Probably defensive tackle. Yeah, he won't commit to us.
- 22:02He went down to Clemson, that's why they put him defensive
- 22:06tackle and that's going to fit in nicely with what we like to
- 22:12do on the defensive line now. It absolutely is man.
- 22:15And I tell you what, if if built are only turns this kid into a
- 22:24first three round pick, he's worth every penny.
- 22:29Every penny, they paid him. Yep.
- 22:31Because it's one of those things where we're talking about when
- 22:36I'm talking about little while like what James doing.
- 22:39But this is how I feel like this is one of those kind of Barrier
- 22:44Breakers because he was at Clemson, he could have stayed at
- 22:48Clemson Right here bility. He's been a rotational piece.
- 22:55For really his entire career. But, You kind of Wonder a, the
- 23:04selling of an NFL defensive line coach in an opportunity to
- 23:08start, but also Darryl, Tapp potentially having those
- 23:14connections, getting in these young man's ear and selling the
- 23:17program and what they're doing. Yep.
- 23:22But we got some beef on the inside beef, on the inside,
- 23:27getting a guy that immediately comes in.
- 23:29To probably the role that Jerrod he would held down.
- 23:33But plus 30 pounds and 3 inches probably backed up by Josh fuga
- 23:41and then you still get, you know, combination of Pollard
- 23:45Kendricks and Crawford, at the three technique, I mean that's
- 23:47going to be a pretty decent defensive line.
- 23:50Rotation. Now, with him coming in
- 23:53defensive tackle rotation, I should say, I really like that
- 23:57too deep now, because you're not, but no matter who you put
- 24:00it, the three technique, you're no longer completely under sized
- 24:04in the interior with a guy like him.
- 24:09I like it. No guys, no wonder size.
- 24:12It will be interesting to more. See what the nickel sort of
- 24:15concepts are like Pollard and Kendricks.
- 24:18But as far as you're talking about having three big beef
- 24:22guys, you got on it. Cunningham comes back healthy.
- 24:25You've got four. So which once was a worry about
- 24:29defensive tackle depth is no longer a worry.
- 24:32All right well let's hit one more piece.
- 24:34That is kind of completely not hokey.
- 24:37Did. But I wanted to touch it just
- 24:39because we watch college football.
- 24:43Devonte Smith wins the Heisman. First, they tied it the fuck
- 24:48right? The first time in 29 years, a
- 24:54wide receiver one has been last one was Desmond, Howard.
- 24:58The only other one has bit, was Tim Brown back in 87.
- 25:03Um, Brian, if you didn't see him just catches that last
- 25:06touchdown, you don't know what stat line for the first half.
- 25:09Oh, I'm looking at it buddy. We got 12 catches to 15 and 3
- 25:13touchdowns in less than a half of football.
- 25:16Good God. He's with this performance,
- 25:22obviously, you know, his first big time.
- 25:24Play was the to a touchdown against Georgia, where he just
- 25:28went by the guy on the cover to safety peaked inside.
- 25:34He's potentially could be a top 5 wide receiver in.
- 25:38This is something like some people say never take one that
- 25:41half, but he literally can do everything.
- 25:49XY slot, he does stuff out of the back field, he can do some
- 25:54of those jet sweeps. He catches screens, literally
- 25:59everything that you can think of he can do.
- 26:03Yep. And I'm kind of pulling up the
- 26:06NFL draft order right now because I'm just interested to
- 26:09see who is should Miami say through the Watson trade.
- 26:17And take him at 3:00 here to aback with.
- 26:21I mean, that's, that's not a bad call.
- 26:27And I mean, when you look at this guy, reminds me of kind of
- 26:33like essentially a more top end Percy Harvin in terms of
- 26:37receiving skills, coming out of college.
- 26:40I should say, we've got a little bit more seasoned receiver, but
- 26:44a guy that can do a lot of those first.
- 26:46Things from the slot from the back field, but also line up
- 26:50outside and run the full route tree.
- 26:53So I really like what I see from him, I think there's going to be
- 26:58some somebody's going to take him in the top 10, no doubt.
- 27:01So you can look in, it's kind of like, well if Miami done taking
- 27:06it, three with Cincinnati, take him to pair with Borough would
- 27:11eat. Well, I don't know what the
- 27:12hell, the Eagles are doing after firing Peterson today, it makes
- 27:15no sense to move. Panthers, probably not the
- 27:20Broncos Cowboys. Probably not.
- 27:23You know what? Actually he there's no way he
- 27:26can make it past 11:00 because the Giants need a one.
- 27:31I would say if he made it to 12. I would be okay with us taking
- 27:36and pair them with Debo with IU Kettle.
- 27:39We've taken enough like, second and third round receivers
- 27:44lately, where I don't think we would take a shot in, but I
- 27:46don't, he's not going to get anywhere close to where we yet.
- 27:49Well, I don't have to worry about that.
- 27:50He is, but, you know, you never know, you never know, but if he
- 27:55falls to 220, sure, screw it. All right, let's let's move on
- 28:05Brian. Let's move on to our coaching.
- 28:07Grades for this staff of 2020 and how we're going to do it,
- 28:11folks. We're going to talk about the
- 28:13defensive Staff first. Then the offensive we are going
- 28:16to wait to do the head coach last, just because I think a we
- 28:20talked about him enough during really the last three to four
- 28:24months that if y'all don't know, probably a grades on him.
- 28:28You you probably not been paying much attention so yeah.
- 28:33Let's go out Brian with Justin, Hamilton the boundary Corner
- 28:39overall gives him a seat. What are you doing?
- 28:44Ryan, personally, I'd like to give him a c-minus but to me, I
- 28:49mean, it's a true grade. That would be fair would be an
- 28:52incomplete because we didn't get to see what a full offseason
- 28:57would look like with a brand new defensive stabbed brand new
- 29:00defensive concept for the most part, so incomplete to me.
- 29:04But if you had, if you helmick held a gun to my head and maybe
- 29:07pick a grade, I'd go see - it took a while for him to kind of
- 29:11get Feet Under. In terms of game adjustments,
- 29:16obviously, some of that had to do with the covid stuff early in
- 29:18the season where he wasn't even at the games, then once he did
- 29:25kind of get in there, it felt like very much a like a square
- 29:28peg. Round hole situations with some
- 29:30of the Styles and then the system sounds a play of the
- 29:34players with the system. We were implementing and so
- 29:37little time to prep it's a little time to really get the
- 29:41the techniques and the Concepts ironed out and instead of just
- 29:45essentially understanding The Playbook enough to line up
- 29:48correctly and I feel like that was a lot of what what we were
- 29:52trying to do early on was just all right if we can if we can
- 29:55line up correctly we might be all right and you know that goes
- 29:59back to the no true offseason but I mean, as the season went
- 30:02on, they started looking a little better.
- 30:04Some of the position group started to come around a little
- 30:07bit. We started working in some of
- 30:10the older Concepts to kind of make the transition feel a
- 30:13Little bit better, kind of stuck with the new Concepts we got,
- 30:17but maybe throughout some of the ones we were struggling with and
- 30:21went to more of a Bud style system in those situations where
- 30:25that was called for. So yeah, I'd say, see, - what
- 30:29about you, buddy? I'm going to just straight-up,
- 30:31see, and a lot of reasons just very similar what you hit the,
- 30:36no offseason thing, you know, that, that probably the biggest
- 30:41not being able to truly install what he wanted.
- 30:43To do. But the reason I bring it to a c
- 30:45and not a lower grade because we did not have a good defense this
- 30:49season. Anybody that tells you we did,
- 30:51they need to be slapped because they weren't paying attention
- 30:53but a I think the scheme that he wants to run in general, I think
- 30:59it can work with the type of talent we can get right now.
- 31:01And also with this scheme it is bringing up into more than
- 31:07modern day where but had adjusted it feels like the last
- 31:13Of years that things were passing by.
- 31:16And it was getting us further. And further behind the 8-ball,
- 31:21very interesting, we forced 17 turnovers this year.
- 31:25So, now you're looking at an 11 game season, that's one and a
- 31:29half a game. That's a significant amount of
- 31:32the other thing is, I'll say, is this the play in the latter half
- 31:36of the Season especially against Clemson against Miami and UVA.
- 31:43The week before, Miami Dash hollifield is presser said,
- 31:47things are starting to click three of the next four weeks are
- 31:51through the best defensive performances.
- 31:53Yes, 45 points were given up to claim:.
- 31:58Most of those in a quarter and a half.
- 31:59Well, as it does in a quarter and a half.
- 32:02Also, we had four turnovers that game.
- 32:05They also force, one of those turnovers back into its several
- 32:09work in our territory. But overall, what you saw was
- 32:13His scheme against that type of talent for for two and a half,
- 32:19quarters a day day one, I'm not going to confuse but they will
- 32:22kind of Struggle Bus them and you had a knowing what he can
- 32:26get. And you see some of the pieces
- 32:27that are coming down in the pipe.
- 32:29You're like, okay, if this, if this goes the best way, it can
- 32:34go. Could put us back into that 115
- 32:37consistently. All right, Brian, let's move on
- 32:40next. Let's go to build till Nick.
- 32:43We overall given him a b-plus. I personally gave him an a -
- 32:49very how I'm built a the way we looked on the defensive line
- 32:52from game one to the last game, looks significantly better.
- 32:57In my opinion. You know, we averaged, you know,
- 33:00over three sacks of game which was good for ninth in the
- 33:04country, 36 total sacks which was good for fifth in the
- 33:09country. We were getting almost seven
- 33:11tackles for loss of gain. Mmmmm.
- 33:13But that's only 30 second, but listen to this. 328 yards lost
- 33:21on those. That was good for ninth.
- 33:24Okay, well here that that's telling me penetrate and we're
- 33:27the defensive line were getting the guys down when they got to
- 33:32him in the backfield and I'll say this, I think probably him
- 33:37with the combination of the next person.
- 33:39We talked about, got Jordan Williams in the boat.
- 33:43That's true. I know, we're pretty much
- 33:45grating on field product here with, that's definitely
- 33:47something we're going to Ring up in certain cases here to justify
- 33:51our grade. I feel like because that's part
- 33:53of the puzzle piece to here and some of this stuff is coming,
- 33:56you know you start working on them in season start working on
- 33:59just after the season. I wouldn't be here.
- 34:02I like the fact that are sacked numbers are up.
- 34:04I like that the season went on and you can see that they were
- 34:08adjusting to it more, the technique being very much about
- 34:12disrupting the action in the back field whether it's it pass.
- 34:18Player Run play. If you're disrupting that,
- 34:22you're going to get a lot of tackles for loss, it's showing
- 34:24up on the stat sheet and it's showing up, especially in the
- 34:28amount of yards that that they surrendered in those tackles for
- 34:31loss and the number of sacks we have.
- 34:34So I feel like those are positive things that we're
- 34:36looking forward to in the future.
- 34:37The biggest thing that I thought that I saw that, I like the most
- 34:42is how fast they brought bar no along from being a very
- 34:47situational. Player to being an every down
- 34:49player. By the end of the season, he was
- 34:53one of the two or three best players on the defense.
- 34:57Yeah, and that's and that's coming from game one where if it
- 35:01wasn't third and long, he looked lost.
- 35:05So that's a big, big shift in his ability to impact the game
- 35:14and that's in season. Imagine if you get them off
- 35:16season with him a proper offseason, a proper spraying.
- 35:20That's going to be something. It is, let's flip to the next
- 35:23guy on the line Darryl Tapp overall, we give them a E+
- 35:28Brian. You gave them the higher grade
- 35:30than me, so I'll let you lead. So I mean, I'm going to give him
- 35:34some of the credit on what's going on with bar, know they're
- 35:36bringing him along. I got a feeling that tap was
- 35:41probably working some with him one-on-one to kind of bring him
- 35:45along as bills working with whole line or half line or
- 35:49something like that. So I feel like he's got a big
- 35:51chunk of bar. No, coming along their love, the
- 35:56energy that he brings. Is Love The Bona Fide
- 35:58credentials of both being Virginia, native hokey and
- 36:03having that NFL pedigree that he brings to the game.
- 36:06I got him. Like I said just a shade lower
- 36:09than then tearling just because I don't know how much he had
- 36:14impact on the scheme design and things like that of the
- 36:17defensive line. But I feel like he's he's
- 36:21bringing a lot of good things to the table and when we talk about
- 36:25the recruiting side of things, this Is the guy that's bringing
- 36:28people into the building and getting guys like Jordan
- 36:34Williams in the portal because of those Bona fides and I was
- 36:37talking about earlier well and you wouldn't be - I meant like a
- 36:43c and it's not an act of Darryl but the the couple big reason is
- 36:49because of built till next rep. I don't know where to put him
- 36:53because we know when you read about Bill is is Dad wherever
- 36:58bill is coach. The defensive lines have been
- 37:00good. They've been good.
- 37:02It's not like well he goes to every here and there.
- 37:05Okay. And then he went there, they're
- 37:08really good, it's like know wherever he's been the defensive
- 37:10lines have been the anchors for their defense has.
- 37:15So it's so tough to say what he did versus what.
- 37:20Tap did what I'm going to tell you what you talked about it.
- 37:23The fire on the sidelines was definitely there bringing the
- 37:27energy. The one I think about the
- 37:29biggest one was the Duke game with getting the stop giving
- 37:34that stop because you they showed him and he was fired.
- 37:38Those guys up and got that stop. And do think that if he kills
- 37:48cruden, And that's every level starving Jordan Williams.
- 37:51Today, the the high school level.
- 37:55The portal level could be in a next year at this time.
- 38:00But then I kind of think about what you said with bar know, and
- 38:03maybe I should put in a C+ or maybe even the be - with you to
- 38:08bring them up to a b - because it makes sense, you have a
- 38:12feeling that A if Bill saw something with bar, no, starting
- 38:18to click. If he just told Darrell, you've
- 38:22got to go with them on and he could and you know, two guys
- 38:25being in the NFL and he can say, you know what about me, helping
- 38:28Justice justices, good Fillmore's doing I'll work with
- 38:31them. You can get him to be in an
- 38:35every down player in a few weeks.
- 38:38Did what you just said by six games into the season, he was
- 38:43basically in every down player re can have it, you know, still
- 38:47trying to figure out how he didn't get a higher.
- 38:49You know how he did get higher on the all-acc when he led the
- 38:54freaking league and tackles for loss.
- 38:56Yep. They're all right.
- 38:59So let's go next to the next guy here.
- 39:02Braun Ron Smith me and you agreed.
- 39:07Down the line on this one, Ron Smith Reserve b-plus.
- 39:11I mean could have been higher. I think it would have been
- 39:15higher if he had Caleb and a healthy germane but me he lost
- 39:18his best quarterbacks basically at the beginning, the season
- 39:22because Jermaine was never ride all year.
- 39:24Caleb gone early, he got put in some crazy situations, you know.
- 39:29Basically his first couple games, he's basically calling
- 39:33plays out there, but all year, his unit They consistently
- 39:38performed. You know, they didn't they
- 39:42didn't blow it out the water but they were never the liability on
- 39:45defense. No, and the other thing that to
- 39:49me took in from a beach of the B+, right underneath an a-minus.
- 39:55He basically coach Dorian strong from the 13th hundred, best
- 39:58player in the country fruiting ranking saying to a freshman
- 40:02All-American and that's got the big thing that I had on my
- 40:07grades as well man. You're working with, you know,
- 40:12you had your two best corners that one opted out the other
- 40:16Miss so much time. And the time that he was there,
- 40:20he was not 100%. So you're pretty much work.
- 40:24King with your number three and number four corner to start the
- 40:27year. On top of the fact that one of
- 40:29the corners you brought in had to be moved to safety and you
- 40:34have a true freshman that's having to play a significant
- 40:37amount of snaps, right out the gate, handled all of this and
- 40:43honestly thrived in most of the cases, they're man brought
- 40:47strong on very quickly had veterans, adjust to the newer
- 40:51scheme faster than the other positions on the It's other than
- 40:56a few blown coverages here. Are there?
- 40:58Which sometimes is just an execution thing and not add to
- 41:01anything to do with coaching. I've got very little to complain
- 41:06about. Like I said, it's just it's hard
- 41:10to give him a hacker grade just because of the fact that he was
- 41:15working with one hand tied behind his back before the
- 41:17season started, Truman very true.
- 41:21But it's tough to give him a bad grade because of how it is.
- 41:24Unibrow certainly. Yeah I mean he definitely made
- 41:26lemonade out of lemons there. Now the next guy in the last
- 41:30gallon defensive side of the ball, Our worst grade was Tracy
- 41:35claeys with the background, he has.
- 41:39And how me, and you expected the linebackers door, especially
- 41:42with the experience unit. We're giving them an f+.
- 41:46So thing, guys, f+ the thing plus is the thing Brawn, I'ma
- 41:51let you go first because you Echo like everything I have But
- 41:57I I gave him slightly different, just a slight.
- 42:00I gave him one position regressed across the board.
- 42:10I mean, if this was one position, one player or maybe a
- 42:14couple of the guys, you might say, oh well, you know, it's
- 42:16just covid this that the third know like everybody on his
- 42:21position unit regressed. Across the board.
- 42:24It took them forever to even get consistent at playing the
- 42:29position that you were talking earlier.
- 42:31We're deck said, you know, three games left in the season, we're
- 42:35finally starting to click, that's not good.
- 42:39All right, Bob that's not good. That's not good at all, you know
- 42:44Brooke. It probably the worst season of
- 42:45his career Tisdale Oscillated between looking like an
- 42:51All-American and looking like he didn't know what the fuck he was
- 42:54doing. Like he'd have a, he'd have a
- 42:57play where he looked like the best player on the field and the
- 43:00next play. He looked like he was lost like
- 43:02just literally out of out of out of position doing the wrong
- 43:06thing, just not knowing what the fuck is going on?
- 43:08And for someone slightly underside of the position you
- 43:10damn will need to be in the right place.
- 43:14It's true. Not just saying you can't be
- 43:16undersized and not doing the the the technique, right?
- 43:21And Dax was decks for six weeks. It's just Dex settled in towards
- 43:32the end of the year and probably at the end of the season, was
- 43:36the most consistent linebacker on the field.
- 43:38Which if you told me that at the beginning, the season out of
- 43:41said you were full of it. You have the like I'll smack.
- 43:45You get out of here. Ya go along with.
- 43:57I'm not gonna say anything but the only reason I did not give
- 44:01him enough and I maybe I'm just nice.
- 44:03I didn't give anybody. D enough, anybody enough?
- 44:08I give Maddie - because of covid, he did not have a chance
- 44:12to work with the guys you know throughout the spring and stuff.
- 44:16And of all the guys on this coaching staff, he was the has
- 44:23the most tenured. He's essentially coaching close
- 44:25to 27 years, he's gonna coordinator before.
- 44:29He's been a successful coordinator before, which is why
- 44:31what we saw this year was Head, scratching and what the fucking
- 44:37exactly. Exactly.
- 44:39We hope there is a spring where he can work with the guys and
- 44:42build upon what those last four games where we could like, you
- 44:44said. And like, I mentioned laughter
- 44:48games, kind of clicked in with especially with Brooke going pro
- 44:52and that coming back at Mike Dax, clicking late playing Mike
- 44:57could be a big step Tracy. You got nowhere to go but up
- 45:02baby. Yeah.
- 45:05All right, we gotta you got a small chance of going down to a
- 45:08full left. Not an f+ but you know that's
- 45:11neither here. Nor there we invented f+.
- 45:13Anyway. Yes Alton am honest.
- 45:17It's essentially a thirds and lured.
- 45:19By the way, there are plus to the bottom though.
- 45:35Yeah, it's true. He's at the garage level.
- 45:37Then this is garage level. He is not white at the lobby,
- 45:40but United the bottom either. He's on the boiler room yet.
- 45:54By the way, or is it 3517? Either way, I picked looking
- 46:02good. Well, maybe not too good because
- 46:04they might put put 60 on them. All right, let's move over to
- 46:07offense and let's start with the wide receiver coach too far
- 46:10Williams too far in his second full season.
- 46:15We kind of pretty much agreed on this see - form run and Brian.
- 46:22What do you feel like what do you feel like he's doing so far
- 46:26that making him not in the D's? Not in the below, average is but
- 46:32I mean on the good side to good side.
- 46:34So number one is he's done a damn good job of teaching.
- 46:38These guys to block whether the quarterbacks running the ball or
- 46:42whether the running backs had the ball or whether it's a Jet
- 46:46Sweep. These guys know how to block out
- 46:49there in space. So that is a big plus because
- 46:52that's not the easiest thing to teach wide receivers.
- 46:57And number two Trey Turner Tavian Robinson had good
- 47:03Seasons, not spectacular Seasons, but they had good
- 47:06Seasons. Yeah, from there, it's kind of
- 47:09downhill. He did a poor job of getting
- 47:11other guys. A lot of touches in this
- 47:13offense. Some of that had to do with the
- 47:16fact that they weren't doing a good job of getting separation,
- 47:18some of it had to do with the rotations and the I think the
- 47:22level of trust that they had in those guys I don't think they
- 47:25gave them enough Trust. To make those plays.
- 47:29And I think that's part of that's a big problem in some of
- 47:31that goes back to the position coach.
- 47:34I think we've seen a lot of attrition at that position since
- 47:38he's been there and some of that has to do with someone else will
- 47:42get to and some of that has to do with him.
- 47:45And I think next season is kind of make or break, I think we
- 47:48need to have all these CC caliber players at the wide
- 47:52receiver position next year, if we're going to keep this guy
- 47:55around for another season because Not killing it on the
- 47:58recruiting Trail either. If he was killing it on the
- 48:00recruiting Trail, you might be able to overlook some of the
- 48:03stuff that's going on on the field but he's not doing that
- 48:05either. It's true, I'm with you on the
- 48:08make-or-break year but what do we know?
- 48:11Because her wit this is Foose year one, we're going to get to
- 48:15that later. Stop it because pray and they
- 48:20are good and they produce you you know they don't always get
- 48:24separation but they occasionally do get separation.
- 48:28They're to me, I feel like Tavian Robinson's route running
- 48:31got better this year. Like, there were times where he
- 48:34finds his own and just kind of hang there and you get the ball
- 48:37to him. Let's definitely reading things
- 48:39better. And I mean, take tase, tase
- 48:41plus, has always been like his ability to kind of make those
- 48:45lateral cuts at smooth. Like he doesn't, he doesn't have
- 48:48the best top-end speed but when he when he makes those cuts,
- 48:52he's not slowing down, he's not losing that step.
- 48:55So he like but I'm gonna make one more.
- 48:57Yep. No other receivers stepped up.
- 49:00And you talked about the attrition But is that his fault
- 49:07again? That's what he's got a he's got
- 49:08a lonesome of it because I feel like it's like a Wiggins would
- 49:12have talked some of these guys to stay and gotten them involved
- 49:15and figured out a way. And I know it's hard to as we're
- 49:20talking about Devante Smith winning a Heisman Trophy with
- 49:25Holman Wiggins that they're coaching him, it's kind of hard
- 49:28to compare Williams to that, but that's what we had before
- 49:31Williams got here. So the four Silly motherfucker.
- 49:34That's what we're comparing you against it is what we will talk
- 49:43about that in a little while. All right, let's move next to
- 49:46obviously your favorite band spice overall.
- 49:50We're giving him a b. I'm going to, I'm going to go
- 49:53first and hit a few quick points and let you jump in because I
- 49:55know this is your bread. Dude.
- 49:56Be for me, best offensive line we'd seen in a long time.
- 50:00In this program, the running game was absolutely dominant.
- 50:03Ain't the passing game wasn't bad when we give up 22 sacks
- 50:09about two sacks of game, 48th in the country about middle of the
- 50:11road. We could, when you're running
- 50:13the ball as good as we did, that something you can live with.
- 50:17He literally made Christian. Daris offers from pick and I
- 50:20know some people will say well that's Dara saw to and it's to a
- 50:23point it's like We have seen players who are unbelievable
- 50:29when they get to the pros, get draft in the seventh round
- 50:31because they have piss-poor coaching in college.
- 50:33We've seen it. It happens now.
- 50:36He was probably a boy - for me or an a for me, but that great
- 50:42game considering lie down with the transfers, especially the
- 50:46caliber of transfers. Brian, it's all yours now.
- 50:51Easily best offensive line across the board that we've had
- 50:53in a decade. Most of it with homegrown guys,
- 50:58most of it on the strength of big-name guys that Vice targeted
- 51:04specifically. So we're talking Nestor, we're
- 51:10talking Brock Hoffman and obviously Dara saw was a guy
- 51:16that was brought in, I think a combination of a couple guys on
- 51:20the staff, but Vice definitely played a role there.
- 51:22So Dara saw being a homegrown development situation there for
- 51:27us, we've got take a guy that came in not necessarily
- 51:32highly-touted. Now, all of a sudden, he's
- 51:35arguably the number one tackle in the draft this year as
- 51:39technically underclassmen soul. I mean, that's some big fucking
- 51:42shit to talk about. Yeah, I love the Run blocking,
- 51:46that's gotten significantly better and he's been targeted.
- 51:50Guys that are coming out of high school, that know how to fucking
- 51:54run block, block through the whistle.
- 51:58Got a little, got a little mean streak to them, and I like that.
- 52:01And it's finally showing up on the field.
- 52:05And so, that's a good thing. Plas pass, blocking was
- 52:08sufficient outside of Dara saw, no one was Elite, everybody's
- 52:13very, very middle of the road but as much as we drop back we
- 52:17didn't need much better than middle of the road and And most
- 52:20times as long as we had the right checks before the snap, we
- 52:24weren't giving up a ton of sacks in the game where that was a
- 52:28complete liability, where we were getting taken out of the
- 52:30game because of sacks. It's so that's something big to
- 52:34hang your hat on. It is discussed throughout the
- 52:38season, we're not on the line, the line did their job to block.
- 52:43It was essentially quarterback. Not getting rid of the ball like
- 52:47the Braxton Burmeister play versus into you stay with me.
- 52:50His wrist perfectly block. Yeah find the open guy.
- 52:54He it's a scramble he gets sacked.
- 52:56They get credited for it as a sack against them.
- 52:58When in reality it's like they held up 47 seconds.
- 53:05I mean at some point you know you gotta.
- 53:07Yeah. It's some point you guys sex or
- 53:09sex or very it's one of those things where it's you have.
- 53:13The offensive line gets the Lion's Share of the blame for
- 53:16them but you know you can't just say, well, they gave With this
- 53:20many sacks and say, well that's indicative of a bad pass
- 53:23blocking offensive line. It's not always the case.
- 53:26I mean, in this case I'd say, you know, we're 48th in the
- 53:29country in terms of actual talent.
- 53:32Maybe top, 40 top, 35? I mean we got some situations
- 53:38where guys are doing the wrong thing with the football.
- 53:40So that that happens man. What?
- 53:44Yeah, do you think that one of these analytical Services should
- 53:48start documenting? Insects more than, like two and
- 53:52a half seconds where you can say, if someone like an online
- 53:56that like you and someone that pays attention like me to say,
- 54:00well, shit, you know, they gave a 40 secs, 28 of them are over.
- 54:0340 seconds, are over two and a half seconds.
- 54:06That is an offensive line problem.
- 54:08That's a quarterback that I can. Yeah.
- 54:10I mean you do something like pocket sex in less than 5
- 54:16seconds or something like that. Because offensive line is, they
- 54:21shouldn't always get dinged Force acts that occur outside
- 54:25the pocket. Exactly, but maybe they
- 54:28shouldn't get dinged for sex that take place, five seconds or
- 54:32greater after the snap. So if you just remove those, I
- 54:36feel like that'd be a fair of pretty fair assessment of an
- 54:40offensive line in terms of past Pro.
- 54:43Anybody else that's offensive line out there.
- 54:45They can comment on this and tell me how wrong I am or how
- 54:48right I am. but, All right, well, that's my two cents on it.
- 54:54Let's move on to the next coach, first-year, coach, Adam, like
- 54:59Timber get running back overall, he gets a b.
- 55:03I'm gonna jump on this one real quick brown before you jump into
- 55:06it. I have one statement / Chris
- 55:08Stapleton. I was wrong.
- 55:13Yeah man, you missed on this one.
- 55:15I mean obviously depending on who you are, you might vary this
- 55:19grade, you know, up a Letter grade or down a letter grade,
- 55:22but nobody's giving this guy a d or an F.
- 55:24What we saw this year? Yeah, this the most production
- 55:29we've gotten for the running back position since 2011 and if
- 55:34it weren't for Her being out, essentially, two full games
- 55:40between sitting one and being very limited.
- 55:44And another, he probably even, you know, crushes it even more
- 55:49there. So, that's, that's got to be
- 55:51something that we look at. He also does a great job
- 55:54recruiting in the transfer portal in the Juco circuit.
- 55:57He really does a good job of bringing those guys in so
- 55:59highlighting Talent. Spotlighting, those guys getting
- 56:02them in letting the position coaches kind of finish the job,
- 56:06Job. But he's the guy that kind of
- 56:07gets the ball rolling on a lot of these things and he does a
- 56:09good job there. I'm dinging him down from
- 56:12probably what could have been a a minus B plus down to a solid B
- 56:16because he should not have had Blackshear as a freaking spell
- 56:19back. We have to determine if that was
- 56:22him or not though, we have not. But I'm, he's a position coach.
- 56:26If he's got to have the balls to 7% and tell, whoever it is, that
- 56:30is making those decisions. If it's not him that you need to
- 56:33sit the fuck down. There's something you just said,
- 56:37But to it because how he is identified, the Juco and the
- 56:42troll portal town. It's like he can look at a guy
- 56:45and say, he just need. We just need to get in this
- 56:49guy's here, and he can take the step and here, it was far.
- 56:54No, it was Herbert. It was black here in certain
- 56:57situations that they use black hero to be a lot better, but I
- 57:02liked for who we are as a program.
- 57:06He's the type, he is the type of guy you want to say, well, look
- 57:10at this new coat. A, no, no, that guy that guy
- 57:13right. There is one step away from
- 57:16being the division, one college football in the more you get
- 57:19those in, especially where we are as a program, the more it's
- 57:22going to help. All right, let's move on to
- 57:24tight end. / special teams coordinator James Shad, best, we
- 57:28are giving him a b - I gave them C.
- 57:31Plus it would have been a b-plus but for one.
- 57:35Damn. Reason you can we Lottie how to
- 57:38freakin field? A punt, full letter grade drop,
- 57:41everything else. Awesome.
- 57:44What you did? That's a full letter grade drop
- 57:46because it cost us multiple gangs and me, it made the Duke
- 57:52game closer than it should be made a couple other games either
- 57:55with Out Of Reach or completely lost on the on the fact of it.
- 57:59So yeah, I'm with you there man. We saw some really good
- 58:04production from the tight ends. Actually James Mitchell.
- 58:07We saw a couple other guys. Come on, Gallo, especially,
- 58:12yeah, Drake had some some good good snaps in there.
- 58:15This year, I didn't feel like we We didn't super Miss Dalton
- 58:22Kane. I felt like they did a good job
- 58:23by committee kind of filling in those roles.
- 58:25James Mitchell's blocking went up significantly, he was a much
- 58:30better blocker this year, not to be, was ever a bad blocker, but
- 58:32he was much better this year than he had been.
- 58:35And, like, you said, man, muff, Punk's.
- 58:39Got to stop. We can't have muffed punt, so
- 58:42those situations, but I think he did good job with some of the
- 58:46situational special team calls. So I'm going to give him the The
- 58:50a bump up for that if we could get Romo to stop kicking out of
- 58:54bounds occasionally and, you know, feel too.
- 58:57Damn, pun. I think we're going to be all
- 58:58right. At that position, man.
- 59:00It's very true, man. All right.
- 59:02Well we kind of Saved. We did this order for a
- 59:05particular reason, so we could highlight probably to people.
- 59:08We you can say bashed or you can say I'm not going to say that to
- 59:12people, we have constructively criticized all year.
- 59:17Let's start with bread, poor Nielsen.
- 59:22I gave bread corn, Nielsen a d-minus, it matched our overall
- 59:26because my D- was damn near enough.
- 59:28Plus in Brian's D was damn near d - yes, it's it's the same shit
- 59:36Braun, you know, we're sitting here watching these two teams
- 59:42tonight and it is, it's an 18 point lead for Alabama.
- 59:45They have excelled offensive ly. I can't tell you what Alabama is
- 59:50going to do next. I can't tell.
- 59:51You the concepts going to come out.
- 59:53Listen in a few fries and a place and and, you know, the
- 59:57a.n.t. head coach with chizik. I don't think he could do that.
- 1:00:02I think you would sound like a bleep and wore on
- 1:00:24Yeah. I mean I feel like it's you know
- 1:00:27you talked about the thing with sitting in the in the booth and
- 1:00:30watching the national championship and commenting on
- 1:00:33it, explaining things in real time and I feel like maybe it's
- 1:00:37a processing thing because I feel like we had just so slow
- 1:00:43situational play calls are so bad.
- 1:00:47We get across the opponent's 40 and just forget out of fucking
- 1:00:52Play offense, I figured out a call, the game, lose the flow,
- 1:00:58whatever you want to call it, and it's just, it's so
- 1:01:04frustrating in mind-numbing that.
- 1:01:09We've got that much talent on the field.
- 1:01:12We're scoring at a clip. That's pretty high.
- 1:01:16Yep, at times and then, you know, a few play calls here in a
- 1:01:21few play calls there, and take two touchdowns off the board.
- 1:01:25It's like, it's, it's so frustrating.
- 1:01:28It's very, it's just my numbing and the adjustments don't come.
- 1:01:32We keep saying, we do what we do.
- 1:01:37But if what we do ain't working, we need to do some Nails, damn
- 1:01:40it. And earlier today, I hit Brian
- 1:01:43up with these stats and y'all good.
- 1:01:44You can look at it. The data is out there.
- 1:01:47We scored our range this year and y'all think with the talent
- 1:01:50we've had the offensive line James Mitchell, Tate, Ray juice,
- 1:01:56whatever quarterback we had back there, we scored an area range
- 1:02:00from 10 points to 45 points. We scored less than 24 for X.
- 1:02:09That makes no God, forsaken sentence.
- 1:02:12To score less than 24 points, four times.
- 1:02:16And then, as I'm digging into a deeper and deeper, and I through
- 1:02:20this tube right, I think it shocked a little bit because it
- 1:02:22took him a couple. It took him a few minutes to
- 1:02:24respond to me. We scored 62 points in the
- 1:02:28second half this year of our game 62 points.
- 1:02:31We averaged 31 and game. Do the math, that shows you
- 1:02:35right there. That we were scoring well over.
- 1:02:39We were scoring 200 plus points in the first half.
- 1:02:42Half 62 points in the second half.
- 1:02:45That's 10 points, that's not good in itself.
- 1:02:48What makes it worse? Brian, when I sent you this, I
- 1:02:51believe you gave me the bullshit in, right?
- 1:02:55You take out the 31 points. We scored against UNC in the
- 1:03:00second half. And do the math.
- 1:03:03We scored, average six points in the second half of the other
- 1:03:07games, that, that can't happen. You can't come out of halftime
- 1:03:14essentially, sit on leads and then sometimes you don't have
- 1:03:17those leads, those are the losses to the second 31 in five
- 1:03:23games we lost. Not killing you and see 31
- 1:03:27points. So if we're up for not doing
- 1:03:29enough to keep the lead and if we're down, we're not doing
- 1:03:31anything to get it back. We're not, we're not and, you
- 1:03:36know, it's just point where it's like, If plan a doesn't work,
- 1:03:43there is no adjusting, there is no changing of Direction.
- 1:03:45It's essentially square peg, round hole Ram, it harder.
- 1:03:50And that's where some of the stuff you talk about.
- 1:03:52The situational play-calling just infuriates you because it's
- 1:03:55in here and it's like, they know that's coming.
- 1:03:58Do something different. Yeah, I mean he's got above
- 1:04:00average design, but it's the adjustments and the situational
- 1:04:05play calling, that just Dooms this offense, a lot of times and
- 1:04:10sometimes its execution and sand, which goes back to a
- 1:04:14degree to coaching. And sometimes, it's just the
- 1:04:16coaches, not putting these players in the right position to
- 1:04:19make the plays and need to be. B.
- 1:04:22And a lot of that goes back to the play call or law that goes
- 1:04:25back to the head coach and some of the goes back to the position
- 1:04:27coaches but I mean at this point we're talking about Brad
- 1:04:31cornelison. A guy that Again we haven't had
- 1:04:36access to Hope on whatever reason.
- 1:04:40Yeah. And devoid of an answer and
- 1:04:45devoid of other facts to present an opposing case.
- 1:04:50This is the conclusion that we've come up with so you know,
- 1:04:55maybe if we get more access to the guy will seem a well, he was
- 1:04:58a fucking scapegoat the whole time, I don't think so, but
- 1:05:01maybe maybe we'll see that. But as of right now, they have
- 1:05:05not given us any reason to think otherwise, Two of the four
- 1:05:08coaches, we had to ask, is it? Are they the issue, wise?
- 1:05:15The second line guys aren't producing or is it somebody
- 1:05:18else? We have what about Jafar?
- 1:05:21We ask that about in and like, Timbers can't seem like the
- 1:05:25worst case to we didn't even mention.
- 1:05:27It was Jalen Holston. Yeah, not getting him, the
- 1:05:30touches are really not getting him to spell juice.
- 1:05:34You kind of sit there and we sit here we talk about and we could
- 1:05:36say, if you had the right combo, they're running Blackshear,
- 1:05:39where you're supposed to and gadgets on sweeps on screens,
- 1:05:42letting him run some easy route. Where the slot goddamn?
- 1:06:18And essentially it made them have to adjust their safeties,
- 1:06:22which supported the Run game strong, which for the downfield,
- 1:06:25passing him stronger. We would like to brief you have
- 1:06:27the rotation right, where it's juicing Holston and I'm still
- 1:06:31trying to figure out why Marco leading get as much play because
- 1:06:34that couple times we saw him run the ball.
- 1:06:36Good law. And it looks like you want to
- 1:06:37run through somebody Hamma Hamma.
- 1:06:40I mean, any, when you sit there and you and it keeps going back,
- 1:06:45because There's a new running backs coaches and you wide
- 1:06:49receivers coach. And then there's Brad because
- 1:06:54tight ends and offensive line. We've always said they're doing
- 1:06:57a sufficient enough job to keep their jobs.
- 1:06:59Yeah, you kept. You lost one.
- 1:07:01Alabama, can't do anything about that.
- 1:07:03The other you're fired because of like a production and you
- 1:07:07have Brad who not the best recruiter.
- 1:07:12Clearing out the blood spray color.
- 1:07:14Good play designer, but that's, you know, that's it.
- 1:07:19And it's just that thing with him.
- 1:07:22It's just, you'd want to see some growth, right?
- 1:07:27We'll see some growth and I think that's where we are with
- 1:07:30him. It's like, we get five years in
- 1:07:31and it's just like, he's doing the same shit.
- 1:07:33He did at the beginning that didn't work.
- 1:07:35Why do you keep doing it? Yeah.
- 1:07:37And I mean, I'm gonna go back to your point a little bit there.
- 1:07:42We're talking about the wide receiver production and so one
- 1:07:46of two things is happening, right?
- 1:07:48So either the wide receivers are not the the second line weren't
- 1:07:55doing enough at the beginning of the season to justify up snap
- 1:07:59counts and up targets well, or they were doing enough and
- 1:08:04weren't being given that opportunity.
- 1:08:06So well, hold on, let's go back to the beginning of 2019.
- 1:08:14He made the decision for Ryan Willis He made the decision.
- 1:08:19Yes. And you say what you will?
- 1:08:23You feel like if this is a structure, Justin Fuente, the
- 1:08:26president Virginia Tech football, J, Hamm and corn or
- 1:08:29his vp's on each side of the ball.
- 1:08:32They can be given direction to say they're ready.
- 1:08:35I'd like to run on these packages and what can they?
- 1:08:38I'm sure they can veto it right. Yeah, I'm sure as Hammond
- 1:08:44Sydney. Now, Marty Raney offense, but
- 1:08:47I'm sure there were times where he that Euro line coach would
- 1:08:51say, hey, can we let's run this play?
- 1:08:52Marty be like, no, it's just walk away and just like Boys.
- 1:08:58I wonder if there were times but I would say that was a big
- 1:09:02situation or maybe because my offensive line coach was six
- 1:09:07foot six 340 pounds in played under Joe pod, Penn State.
- 1:09:12So he wasn't the guy that you always want to say no to.
- 1:09:17But yeah, yeah he would definitely over.
- 1:09:19Overrule him for sure and Like I said, the big thing is that when
- 1:09:26we talk about core Nelson and that wide receiver situation.
- 1:09:28So if either of those things are true either, you're not doing a
- 1:09:31good job of getting your number, your second line, guys the ball
- 1:09:34when they're on the field or you're not recognizing a flaw
- 1:09:40and seeing a potential solution in Black sheared, at least
- 1:09:43increase the depth at that position and moving him to that
- 1:09:47position full-time. Trip.
- 1:09:51So I mean if you're saying those guys aren't getting it done,
- 1:09:55you've got tape of a guy getting it done.
- 1:09:59Under a, what you would consider an inferior staff because they
- 1:10:03got fired from fucking Rutgers. Let's be honest here.
- 1:10:09I mean, put chips on the table, it's a travesty that they didn't
- 1:10:14get that guy more touches in the passing game from a traditional
- 1:10:18wide receiver position. You know what?
- 1:10:20I keep watching this and I know about the Smiths a special
- 1:10:24player, but how many times have they just ran a heart inside?
- 1:10:27Slant from the slot with him? Him.
- 1:10:30And you feel like you see Blackshear shiftiness and you
- 1:10:34say, he can run that for yard slant.
- 1:10:37Yeah, now, I got to say this Ohio, they've ran it like six
- 1:10:40times Ohio state has failed to adjust to it, like me to change,
- 1:10:44leverage with your gal. He's in the slot, we can go
- 1:10:47deep. I don't care.
- 1:10:48If he can go to, he freed me with the freaking slant.
- 1:10:50Every time. Make him beat.
- 1:10:52You deep once at least. All right, let's let me Focus
- 1:10:56back on what we're doing here. All right.
- 1:10:58Last but not least, Braun. Head ball, coach, Justin, Fuente
- 1:11:05me and Brian said he discussed this for a little while and
- 1:11:09there was no possible way that we could give him a grade above
- 1:11:15combined D. Yeah, I wouldn't be plus and a
- 1:11:23lot of my stuff it's not so much the season.
- 1:11:26The season is what it is. There were several Real times
- 1:11:30you could tell with the overall game plan was I feel like that's
- 1:11:33him with an overall game plan? That were very good.
- 1:11:37It made sense. I'm still convinced.
- 1:11:40Still convinced he called in Sea State, I feel like me and you
- 1:11:46can should go back and watch that game one day because that
- 1:11:51game felt different than any other game.
- 1:11:53We played this year and they work that game highlighted are
- 1:11:58very good elements of our offense and In hid the bad
- 1:12:01elements of our offense and I still think that was him calling
- 1:12:04because remember the rumors flew that week, that corn had had
- 1:12:08covid, he was going to be back, but he was going to be back late
- 1:12:11in the week. Essentially a play where he
- 1:12:14can't do play calls because he's not there to install.
- 1:12:16The rumors flew, never confirmed or denied what the way that game
- 1:12:23was called but the way every single game after that was
- 1:12:28called was completely different. He gets the D for me or the D
- 1:12:32Plus for me for what happened in the last month.
- 1:12:37You just came off a five and six season.
- 1:12:40You had it all you guys on defense.
- 1:12:43You want to fire some of them go for it.
- 1:12:45That's your decision. Most people are going to hammer
- 1:12:47you on that because they didn't have an offseason.
- 1:12:51You have to position groups, we've mentioned before, pie,
- 1:12:55tins and offensive line. It feels like from day, one have
- 1:12:58always produced have always been solid, you fry, two running
- 1:13:01backs coach and that went up. You have a wide receiver coach
- 1:13:05in his second year. Whose two best players are
- 1:13:08consistently producing at a good level.
- 1:13:11There's one consistent and you won't fire him, and he should be
- 1:13:16fired. And if you even if you don't
- 1:13:18fire him, demote him or bring on somebody else to take over the
- 1:13:23play calling. And even if he keeps his
- 1:13:26offensive coordinator job, bringing in, like a, some sort
- 1:13:30of game coordinator to just handle the play, calling you
- 1:13:34whatever it is like, look in the mirror, self-evaluate figure out
- 1:13:39where the deficiencies are and at least put a fucking Band-Aid
- 1:13:44on them. Even if you don't go in there
- 1:13:46and you know, Stitch it up, like do something.
- 1:13:51Not, we're rolling. No, we're Nolan guys.
- 1:13:57We are rolling on. We just lost six games.
- 1:14:00We were sub 500, we lost a liberty.
- 1:14:02We got blown out by pit. No, we are not rolling, we're
- 1:14:07not fucking rolling sputtering. Yeah, I mean, we're all getting
- 1:14:12by if you're cool getting by that, do you, but that's not
- 1:14:16what we want. And that's why we were calling
- 1:14:18for your head this off season. And here's the thing, and I
- 1:14:24think this is this is probably me and you and more level-headed
- 1:14:27fans. We want you to succeed next
- 1:14:30year. Yeah, we do.
- 1:14:34But when this I'm not going to say when, but if the same shit
- 1:14:40starts happening, which we assume it is your, you you need
- 1:14:45to be gone. We are it's going to get more
- 1:14:47and more vocal. It's going to be more and more
- 1:14:49seen because my assumption is the way they're saying it.
- 1:14:53That what are they saying by July?
- 1:14:57Every person in Virginia could have taken the vaccine.
- 1:15:01Every person in Virginia will have had the opportunity to take
- 1:15:04the vaccine. So would you hear that me?
- 1:15:09You know, you assume that there it's going to be stains going to
- 1:15:13be open the opportunity to take the vaccines there.
- 1:15:15The treatments are better. We know more and more.
- 1:15:17What this thing targets who it doesn't Target.
- 1:15:20We know how to protect ourselves yada yada, right?
- 1:15:23Yep. If it starts talking bad.
- 1:15:27Add the stadium is going to look bad and eventually people are
- 1:15:30going to they're going to call for your head, the Bayou.
- 1:15:32It's going to be a hell of a lot lower next year.
- 1:15:36Hell of a lot lower and you will assume with all the cuts that
- 1:15:40have been made and everything your heads there.
- 1:15:44So this is my advice, a pray. You don't have to play a card
- 1:15:48team on Labor Day, but if your boy cruise around and is doing
- 1:15:54bad things, you better you better.
- 1:15:57You said Brian. Look in the mirror quickly.
- 1:15:58Take the accountability and set your done cut it because it is
- 1:16:04your job and is going to be gone.
- 1:16:07Yep. And I'll say that, I'll be the
- 1:16:10bad thing. Is that, I mean, it's going to
- 1:16:12be very hard for them to do something different without
- 1:16:18firing cornelison at some point because, yeah, you know, we're
- 1:16:22talking about the budget cuts in the athletic department, this,
- 1:16:26that and the third, Third. And what is available to funds
- 1:16:31for the support staff? I mean, even if you want to
- 1:16:33bring in like a quality guy on offense to essentially do what
- 1:16:37kill did. I mean at that point that's
- 1:16:39that's a hard ask for an athletic department that's, you
- 1:16:43know, cutting salaries across the board had to fire a bunch of
- 1:16:47people in some of the lower positions.
- 1:16:49I mean, it's going to be something where You know, you're
- 1:16:55still going to be dealing with the Optics of the situation to
- 1:16:58make to put the product on the field.
- 1:16:59You want with this coaching staff versus at least getting
- 1:17:03some Goodwill, some extra donations.
- 1:17:06All of the things that come with bringing in a head coach that
- 1:17:10can reinvigorate the program at the right time.
- 1:17:13Exactly. And well again we want them to
- 1:17:18succeed and again we have said it in the past.
- 1:17:21We feel like if things If things were constructed correctly on
- 1:17:27the staff, certain people doing certain things differently.
- 1:17:33I'm not saying the mid-January game is attainable at the
- 1:17:38moment. But I think your sixth
- 1:17:41attainable I think winning the coastal is attainable.
- 1:17:45Certainly, what do you cope Coastal should be attainable?
- 1:17:48Just based on the fact that we are fucking Virginia Tech and we
- 1:17:52play in the coastal. Sure.
- 1:17:54I mean, if we get past UNC in Miami, were Coastal Champions.
- 1:17:59You should be able to every year split that if not when both not
- 1:18:04win. Both if not when both and then
- 1:18:07me and you've talked about in the past, with the scheme, we We
- 1:18:10run we show that we can score points or points on these guys.
- 1:18:14We feel now more consistently with what we're going to do.
- 1:18:16Defensively the defensive side against certain offenses,
- 1:18:21especially against the Miami's. The North Carolina type offenses
- 1:18:27that they're running right now. We're going to get better.
- 1:18:31Yeah, it's two people got D's on our report.
- 1:18:36Well, with the exception, Tracy claeys.
- 1:18:39I still think the Tracy things and having covid the other two
- 1:18:42guys have been here. But 12 guys have been on the
- 1:18:47staff, this whole time, one guy in and administer in more of a
- 1:18:52own field product rule. If you Justin Fuente.
- 1:19:01Is literally his Ace in the Hole.
- 1:19:03Going to be Let's say we start to into, and when I say that by
- 1:19:10starting to into we play UNC dopin, we lose them.
- 1:19:15But we beat Middle, Tennessee would lose to West.
- 1:19:17Virginia would lose the black down Trophy and we lose and we
- 1:19:19beat Richmond. We're where we were at the Duke
- 1:19:22game. Is the only thing that would you
- 1:19:29do if he at that right then and there firebreak or Nielsen and
- 1:19:35we played significantly better the rest of your I'm offense.
- 1:19:38Would you let him come back? Or it's like nope, you waited
- 1:19:40too long, fuck you. I mean, yeah.
- 1:19:47So which one is? It is it?
- 1:19:49You waited too long or we're going to let you stay.
- 1:19:51That's a you waited too long. Okay.
- 1:19:54You waited too long, fuck you should have got rid of them last
- 1:19:56year he was never that good. Yeah.
- 1:20:00All right. Real quick.
- 1:20:02Before we wrap up here tonight guys, bold pick x-brawn, you
- 1:20:06went five and four six and three over here.
- 1:20:09I beat you by a game, Ohio state held to a field goal.
- 1:20:14Just got inside, the 20 yard line with 703 in the third.
- 1:20:17Is there anything else breaking Braun?
- 1:20:19Did we get any other commits? Anything else?
- 1:20:22Interesting happen. I'm not see anything popping up.
- 1:20:24I'm looking back through real quick just to see if anything
- 1:20:28jumps out. And I think we're good, man.
- 1:20:30All right. Well, folks, that is going to be
