- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:45Speaker 1: running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, thirteen
- 0:48Speaker 1: years strong. Got a great discussion come your way this
- 0:52Speaker 1: week about the world of Philly sports. I'm Jeff Warren.
- 0:55Speaker 1: I'm here, my buddy letting hunsicker Man. How are you doing, buddy?
- 0:59Speaker 1: Then a weeks good to see you.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, good to see you. Good to be back on.
- 1:03Speaker 2: So lot going on right now, isn't.
- 1:06Speaker 1: There It's incredible this past week on the Table Talk show. Folks.
- 1:09Speaker 1: If you haven't heard it, go back in the feed
- 1:11Speaker 1: check it out. If you're on YouTube, go back and
- 1:14Speaker 1: watch it. Just assessing the four major Philly sports teams.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I got into with the good friend of the show
- 1:22Speaker 1: and like, things are not bad. Things are not bad
- 1:26Speaker 1: in the world of Philly sports right now. Isn't it amazing?
- 1:28Speaker 1: Just the ebbs and flows.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, especially like, uh, gonna talk right up
- 1:34Speaker 2: front about something I was wrong. I was like, oh,
- 1:37Speaker 2: Sixers are playing the Celtics, They're going to get destroyed. Yes,
- 1:39Speaker 2: that didn't happen, right, So it's just like, yeah.
- 1:43Speaker 1: It's incredible how things work in the sports world. And really,
- 1:47Speaker 1: at the end of the day. Like, I'm grateful to
- 1:50Speaker 1: be a Philadelphia sports fan. I'm just grateful. Man, our
- 1:54Speaker 1: teams are relevant, the team's are relevant. Man, It's great
- 1:57Speaker 1: all of them. Yes, And look, we're gonna get to
- 2:00Speaker 1: Flyers talk a little later on in the show, folks,
- 2:03Speaker 1: and we our guests this week. It's gonna be Steve
- 2:08Speaker 1: from Steve Daco from fly Perbole and Broadstreet Hockey dot Com.
- 2:12Speaker 1: We're gonna have a great, great discussion. But like then,
- 2:15Speaker 1: the fact of the matter is is, like the Flyers
- 2:17Speaker 1: are in the second round. And again, we're gonna get
- 2:19Speaker 1: to this later, but like I'm still baffled by the
- 2:22Speaker 1: fact that this team is where it's at right now.
- 2:24Speaker 1: They could get they could get destroyed, they could get
- 2:26Speaker 1: like completely shut out in the series. But like it's
- 2:29Speaker 1: everything's gravy here.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, at this point with the Flyers, Yeah, you're in
- 2:35Speaker 2: you're in house money mode. Yeah, I think, And really,
- 2:39Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know if it's the right way
- 2:41Speaker 2: to feel, you know, given the fact that you know,
- 2:44Speaker 2: you do have you know, superstar players on that team.
- 2:47Speaker 2: But like, I don't know, I feel like beating the
- 2:49Speaker 2: Celtics maybe maybe the Sixers are in kind of house
- 2:52Speaker 2: money mode, like even if they lose to the Nicks,
- 2:55Speaker 2: you know, in this series, and I don't know, am
- 2:58Speaker 2: I gonna be that broken up about it? I mean,
- 3:00Speaker 2: and they took down an organization that I think has
- 3:05Speaker 2: bedeviled them over the past what forty years more or less,
- 3:09Speaker 2: so you know, I mean, with a center who is
- 3:14Speaker 2: hardly ever healthy, you know. So I don't know. Maybe
- 3:18Speaker 2: it's just because my expectations for the Sixers aren't that
- 3:20Speaker 2: high and the Flyers really I mean, you know, so
- 3:23Speaker 2: the Flyers have I think given all of us more
- 3:26Speaker 2: than any of us really expected this year, and so
- 3:30Speaker 2: they could get swept by Carolina and it's still a
- 3:33Speaker 2: wild success this season.
- 3:34Speaker 1: So yeah, everything is gravy right now in the world
- 3:36Speaker 1: of Philly sports. But to let you all know what
- 3:39Speaker 1: we're going to be getting into this week on the
- 3:41Speaker 1: show the Agenda, We're first going to start with some
- 3:43Speaker 1: Phillies talk. I mean, they have been winning games, and
- 3:46Speaker 1: they certainly are winning games that they should be winning,
- 3:49Speaker 1: at least in my opinion and a lot of the
- 3:52Speaker 1: opinions of Phillies fans out there. Got Phillies talk coming
- 3:56Speaker 1: your way. And then we're going to talk about one
- 3:59Speaker 1: Ted turn who passed away died at the age of
- 4:02Speaker 1: eighty seven today and the guy he had his impact
- 4:04Speaker 1: in the sports world. So we're gonna give our thoughts
- 4:07Speaker 1: on Ted Turner's life and how he impacted the sports
- 4:11Speaker 1: world in various ways. Gonna get into some Sixers talk,
- 4:14Speaker 1: then Flyers talk again. Gonna talk to Steve Jaco from
- 4:17Speaker 1: Fly Purble and Broadstreet Hockey dot Com. He's gonna jump
- 4:22Speaker 1: on to talk about this series against Carolina Hurricanes and
- 4:25Speaker 1: what the Philadelphia Flyers are doing, what they're not doing,
- 4:28Speaker 1: what we're seeing on the ice. So let's get into
- 4:31Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Phillies here, because man, there they're beating teams
- 4:36Speaker 1: now finally that they should be beating for sure. As
- 4:40Speaker 1: of us recording this, I'm not sure what the I'm
- 4:43Speaker 1: not sure what the score is right now. Maybe I
- 4:45Speaker 1: can like check on my phone they won? Did they
- 4:47Speaker 1: win six to three? Okay? Fantastic, amazing that they are.
- 4:51Speaker 1: They're winning games despite not having Rob Thompson managing them.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Don Mattingly, the greatest coach now that has ever lived.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Right since since that move they made, they've been they've
- 5:02Speaker 2: been hot. They have so clearly I think, you know,
- 5:06Speaker 2: we we may have been at a point where, you know,
- 5:09Speaker 2: and this happens all the time in sports, where the
- 5:12Speaker 2: coach's message just stops hitting at a certain point. Yeah,
- 5:16Speaker 2: and a change is necessary, and for all intents and purposes,
- 5:19Speaker 2: it looks like that's what's happened here with the with
- 5:21Speaker 2: the Phillies.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:23Speaker 2: So you know, they made the move that they needed
- 5:25Speaker 2: to make, and they seem to be responding to maddically
- 5:28Speaker 2: right now.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And what is working at this point for the Phillies.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I think we can look at at least two things
- 5:34Speaker 1: here about I would say more than half the starters,
- 5:39Speaker 1: or I should say more than half the lineup is actually
- 5:42Speaker 1: hot like you just said, I mean the bats are
- 5:44Speaker 1: hot for I'd say more than half the lineup. And
- 5:46Speaker 1: the starting rotation is doing its job in seven of
- 5:51Speaker 1: the past eight games. You know, starting rotation is doing
- 5:54Speaker 1: what it should be doing. Bryce Harper has has has
- 5:59Speaker 1: has just been incredible, back to what I deemed to
- 6:03Speaker 1: be the Bryce Harper that we have all come to
- 6:06Speaker 1: know and love. And there's that expectation.
- 6:10Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Bryson Stott last night with a home run that was nice.
- 6:13Speaker 2: He's been hot lately, and he was a guy that
- 6:15Speaker 2: we've been waiting ones to, like, you know, one of
- 6:17Speaker 2: those complimentary players that we've been waiting on to take
- 6:20Speaker 2: a step forward, and he's starting to heat up.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Yep. Christopher Sanchez. Last night's game I was amazing as well.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Again the starting pitching doing what it needs to do,
- 6:30Speaker 1: because leading leading up to these recent wins here, I
- 6:35Speaker 1: think the starting rotation didn't they They weren't able to
- 6:38Speaker 1: get past like five innings for like the first twenty
- 6:40Speaker 1: eight games or something like that. Yeah, you know, it's.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Crazy, and that really, you know, puts a strain on
- 6:45Speaker 2: your bullpen. So I mean yeah, and that was really
- 6:49Speaker 2: a big key of what made them so successful last
- 6:52Speaker 2: season was those starters seemed like they were getting you
- 6:55Speaker 2: seven innings every single game.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Uh, and just up until recently it hadn't been like that.
- 7:01Speaker 2: But now hopefully we're starting to get into something like
- 7:03Speaker 2: that now.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I hope so. And I think I think we all
- 7:07Speaker 1: need to also realize that, you know, Andrew Paynter, this
- 7:12Speaker 1: is his first year here. Okay, you know, only starter
- 7:16Speaker 1: in the rotation that's really been so so has of
- 7:19Speaker 1: course been Andrew Paynter, who allowed three runs over five
- 7:23Speaker 1: innings to the Marlins with ten base runners seven strikeouts,
- 7:28Speaker 1: and that lone loss that we have seen on this
- 7:30Speaker 1: basically basically a winning streak here at this point. I mean,
- 7:33Speaker 1: the fact of the matter is Painters he's learning on
- 7:37Speaker 1: the job and it's gonna happen all season and I
- 7:40Speaker 1: think we need to realize that. But thankfully he has
- 7:43Speaker 1: other pitchers in this starting rotation that are doing their jobs.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Right now, the starting rotation has really come alive here.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Yeah, if he's you know, if a rookie happens to
- 7:54Speaker 2: be the weak link in your rotation, I mean that's
- 7:58Speaker 2: really basically as it should be, you know, in an
- 8:00Speaker 2: ideal world. I mean, if you're if your best pitcher
- 8:03Speaker 2: is a rookie, then you know your other starters quite
- 8:06Speaker 2: frankly aren't doing the job. So I mean this it's
- 8:11Speaker 2: you know, I think we all have, you know, high
- 8:13Speaker 2: hopes for Painter, and we've been hearing his name for
- 8:16Speaker 2: a couple of years now, so you're waiting, Okay, what's
- 8:18Speaker 2: all the fuss about, And you know that may not
- 8:20Speaker 2: necessarily happen this year as a rookie learning the league,
- 8:25Speaker 2: coming off of a big you know, big arm injury.
- 8:28Speaker 2: So you know, these are all factors. You know, you
- 8:30Speaker 2: may not see the Andrew Painter that we all hope
- 8:33Speaker 2: we see this year at all. I mean that might
- 8:35Speaker 2: be something that's a year or maybe more down the road.
- 8:39Speaker 2: You know, you don't know that.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, And look, if you don't mind, lend, let's
- 8:43Speaker 1: talk about the bullpen for a bit here, because, I mean,
- 8:45Speaker 1: the most important reliever for the Philadelphia Phillies, Johan Durand
- 8:50Speaker 1: he returned Tuesday night, I think in a major way,
- 8:54Speaker 1: a major boost for the team overall. He ended up
- 8:57Speaker 1: with that with that save and and it was it
- 9:00Speaker 1: was just nice to see him back out there. Hopefully
- 9:03Speaker 1: not going to have any setbacks. But I mean, he
- 9:07Speaker 1: really is that that that fire that the team needs
- 9:10Speaker 1: at the end of games to make sure things are
- 9:12Speaker 1: closing out, especially the way that the bats are batting
- 9:15Speaker 1: right now. There's support here for the bullpen. The bullpen
- 9:18Speaker 1: doesn't have to do it on its own necessarily, as
- 9:20Speaker 1: the way the starting pitching has been so the bullpen
- 9:24Speaker 1: I think hopefully is going to things are going to
- 9:26Speaker 1: settle down with it in the near future here.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and having your closer back I mean, is a
- 9:31Speaker 2: benefit just because it slots everybody back down to where
- 9:35Speaker 2: they're supposed to be in the order of things. So
- 9:38Speaker 2: that alone is going to be helpful for the team.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Absolutely. All right, folks, Well, we are going to take
- 9:45Speaker 1: a break to pay some bills here. With that said,
- 9:48Speaker 1: if you want to like and subscribe on YouTube if
- 9:52Speaker 1: you're watching us, we greatly appreciate that. You can also
- 9:55Speaker 1: hit the bell to be notified when we post new videos.
- 9:58Speaker 1: If you're listening on an audio platform, share the Philadelphia
- 10:02Speaker 1: Sports Table with your family and friends, maybe Philadelphia sports fans.
- 10:06Speaker 1: We'd love to be in their ears as well. With
- 10:09Speaker 1: that said, leave a comment below about the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 10:12Speaker 1: We're just talking about them, the bats, the pitching. We'd
- 10:15Speaker 1: love to hear from you. What are you thinking of
- 10:17Speaker 1: this team right now? So Heppian said, we're gonna take
- 10:20Speaker 1: a break and we get back. We got a lot
- 10:23Speaker 1: more Philly sports talk coming your way, right we are
- 10:28Speaker 1: back here, Len, Sometimes folks in the sports world or
- 10:33Speaker 1: the media world, you know, they pass away and you
- 10:35Speaker 1: kind of like take a step back and you're like,
- 10:36Speaker 1: you know what, as much as I didn't necessarily always
- 10:39Speaker 1: care for this individual, they really did leave their mark
- 10:42Speaker 1: in some way in the world, and that certainly happened
- 10:45Speaker 1: today for me when we learned that Ted Turner died
- 10:49Speaker 1: at the age of eighty seven. And like it or not,
- 10:53Speaker 1: the guy had a tremendous impact in the sports world
- 10:56Speaker 1: as the owner of the Atlanta Braves. We all know
- 10:59Speaker 1: that once of where he managed the Braves back in
- 11:02Speaker 1: nineteen seventy seven. He's also owner of the Atlanta Hawks
- 11:06Speaker 1: as well. And when it comes to sports entertainment, I
- 11:10Speaker 1: know you and I back in the day, and I
- 11:12Speaker 1: know you still, you know, dabbling your WWE and professional wrestling.
- 11:16Speaker 1: In terms of sports entertainment, he was the owner and
- 11:18Speaker 1: founder of WCW and the guy just had a tremendous
- 11:23Speaker 1: amount of clout and understood the sports industry I think
- 11:29Speaker 1: pretty well. And regardless I hated him, of course growing.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Up as a Brave Z owner, you know, yes, kind.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Of absolutely, but man, did he really leave his mark
- 11:41Speaker 1: on the world of sports and sports entertainment with professional wrestling.
- 11:45Speaker 1: So just I don't know what were your thoughts initially,
- 11:48Speaker 1: because I was kind of just like I was, like, man,
- 11:51Speaker 1: an icon died, you know, an icon. We're getting to
- 11:53Speaker 1: that age where the icons are really dying out there.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's really one of those things where you know,
- 12:00Speaker 2: you may forget certain things just because you know, certain
- 12:03Speaker 2: things kind of become ingrained in your life, but you know,
- 12:07Speaker 2: outside of the realm of sports, I mean, he created CNN.
- 12:11Speaker 2: You know, I think the twenty four hour cable news
- 12:14Speaker 2: network is and for better or worse. I mean, I
- 12:17Speaker 2: think a lot of us can agree sometimes it is
- 12:20Speaker 2: for the worst, and depending on what side of the
- 12:22Speaker 2: aisle you sit on, you can probably agree with that absolutely.
- 12:26Speaker 2: But he essentially invented it, Like I mean, so it's
- 12:31Speaker 2: something that's so ingrained in our lives now, but that
- 12:34Speaker 2: wasn't around before Ted Turner. That alone, he could have
- 12:37Speaker 2: never done anything in sports, and that alone is frigging gigantic. Yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean, as you know, you know, I
- 12:45Speaker 2: didn't really as as a young kid who liked baseball
- 12:48Speaker 2: and watched baseball. I mean, I knew who Dale Murphy was,
- 12:52Speaker 2: but you know, I didn't have a working knowledge of
- 12:55Speaker 2: the Atlanta Braves. I didn't know anything about him. And
- 12:57Speaker 2: he made them marquee brand in this country and in
- 13:03Speaker 2: Major League Baseball by basically having them on a channel
- 13:07Speaker 2: that everybody could access. It wasn't just like, oh, well
- 13:10Speaker 2: that's way out of market. I'll never see a Braves game. Yeah,
- 13:13Speaker 2: yeah you will, because it's right there on a network
- 13:16Speaker 2: that your your cable provider, you know, gives you. So
- 13:20Speaker 2: being able to do something like that really gave that
- 13:22Speaker 2: organization a high amount of visibility and really kind of
- 13:27Speaker 2: helped to turn them into the power that they have
- 13:30Speaker 2: been over the past what thirty years now, and the
- 13:32Speaker 2: Braves have been a you know, a staple organization within
- 13:35Speaker 2: Major League Baseball.
- 13:36Speaker 1: And it's made us hate them more too, as Phillies
- 13:39Speaker 1: fans as absolutely a part of it.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't really grow to hate somebody that isn't visible.
- 13:47Speaker 2: And I mean that hate was there, you know, even
- 13:50Speaker 2: before they were a division rival. I mean they were
- 13:53Speaker 2: you know, back in the day in ninety three when
- 13:56Speaker 2: they were fighting in the playoffs for the NL they
- 13:59Speaker 2: weren't in the same division. So I mean that that,
- 14:01Speaker 2: you know, they were they were already kind of a
- 14:05Speaker 2: hated entity even before they were in the same division,
- 14:09Speaker 2: which you know, it goes to goes to you know,
- 14:12Speaker 2: that's a testament to his impact on that organization and
- 14:16Speaker 2: his growth of that organization.
- 14:18Speaker 1: What about w CW, because it took a while, it
- 14:21Speaker 1: took a while for w CW to really get to
- 14:24Speaker 1: a prominence where they were able to overtake at at
- 14:28Speaker 1: the time, you know, the w w F in terms
- 14:31Speaker 1: of its ratings for was it like well over a
- 14:34Speaker 1: year that I think they had better ratings.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Than Night Warsday Night. Yeah, as as Hollywood Hogan called
- 14:42Speaker 2: him trillionaire Ted when when he was leading the NWL.
- 14:46Speaker 2: But but yeah, like I mean owning that property, which
- 14:52Speaker 2: was at the time, I mean I remember, you know,
- 14:54Speaker 2: I watched a little bit of both at those times,
- 14:56Speaker 2: but at that point in time, I was probably watching
- 15:00Speaker 2: w c W a little bit more than than WWE
- 15:04Speaker 2: at that time. Yeah, and then obviously, you know, once
- 15:07Speaker 2: you have Rock in Austin and and people like that,
- 15:10Speaker 2: that kind of that turn was made. But yeah, no,
- 15:13Speaker 2: there there was a time in which, you know, w
- 15:15Speaker 2: c W was the premiere wrestling organization, and those those
- 15:21Speaker 2: Monday Night Wars were I mean, I think there's a
- 15:24Speaker 2: documentary on it. They were huge.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Oh absolutely they were. I mean and Ted Turner just
- 15:29Speaker 1: uh again had his hands in so much of building
- 15:33Speaker 1: that w c W brand, which which inevitably then they
- 15:37Speaker 1: get bought out by WWE of course, but it's just
- 15:41Speaker 1: what what what an amazing life the guy led, you know,
- 15:44Speaker 1: being you know, trillion trillion.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Or Ted He was really on a on a you know,
- 15:50Speaker 2: multi decade heater where everything he touched turned to gold.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I mean that's hats off to him for that.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Absolutely. Well, moving along here, who knows maybe every maybe
- 16:05Speaker 1: everything Josh Harris turns to gold? Because what's happening with
- 16:09Speaker 1: the Philadelphia kidding? Of course?
- 16:12Speaker 2: God he he is like you know, somebody like Ted
- 16:15Speaker 2: Turner walks into a room and you're like, there's a presence. Yeah, man,
- 16:19Speaker 2: I I've never looked at Josh Harris and had the
- 16:23Speaker 2: word presence.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Exactly exactly what words could we use if Josh Harris
- 16:30Speaker 1: walked into a room?
- 16:32Speaker 3: What?
- 16:32Speaker 1: I gotta be nice here. I gotta be nice because
- 16:35Speaker 1: hello to the people who are watching out there with
- 16:37Speaker 1: regard to the campaign, high you're waiting for me to
- 16:39Speaker 1: say something. So I just I just wanted to tell
- 16:42Speaker 1: the people the opposition. I just wanted to say hi
- 16:44Speaker 1: to him real quick. So I want to be nice.
- 16:46Speaker 1: But like Josh Harris walks in a room, Like, what
- 16:49Speaker 1: do you what comes to our minds? Is it just
- 16:52Speaker 1: like dork or is it.
- 16:56Speaker 2: A weazel they have, they have the thing of like
- 16:59Speaker 2: you know, you know, if you're I don't know if
- 17:03Speaker 2: this is the right thing, but like if you're a man,
- 17:04Speaker 2: you know, you greet somebody, you look him in the
- 17:06Speaker 2: eye and you give him.
- 17:07Speaker 1: A firm hand, firm handshake.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Yes, Josh Harris, to me, is the is the walking
- 17:12Speaker 2: opposite of a firm handshake? It is he is, He's
- 17:16Speaker 2: a walking limp limp.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Handshakem noodle handshake.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Yes. What comes to my mind when I when I
- 17:21Speaker 2: physically look at Josh Harris?
- 17:23Speaker 1: Yes, but look the thing his Philadelphia seventy six ers.
- 17:28Speaker 1: You know, it's like you said earlier, when I think
- 17:32Speaker 1: it's just gravy. Right now, they're playing with house cards.
- 17:35Speaker 1: I think that beating the Celtics how they did in
- 17:38Speaker 1: round one, I feel like that is our Eastern Conference
- 17:42Speaker 1: finals in a way that we've been waiting for.
- 17:45Speaker 2: And that's I think that's a fair statement because I
- 17:49Speaker 2: don't think anybody that follows this team, even if you
- 17:51Speaker 2: thought of them as okay, they're going to make the playoffs,
- 17:54Speaker 2: Nobody thought of them as Oh, they're coming out of
- 17:57Speaker 2: the East. I don't. I don't think anybody is under
- 17:59Speaker 2: that kind of delusion. So the fact that they beat
- 18:02Speaker 2: the Celtics in round one, you know, that's that's I
- 18:07Speaker 2: hate to say that's enough because you feel like you're
- 18:09Speaker 2: letting them off the hook. But it's more than I expected.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Absolutely so absolutely.
- 18:13Speaker 2: As you know, as of right now, I just happen
- 18:16Speaker 2: to check my phone, they're down in the fourth quarter,
- 18:19Speaker 2: like two and a half minutes left one five to
- 18:22Speaker 2: ninety nine to the next right now. So if that holds,
- 18:24Speaker 2: they'll be down to nothing in the series. But you know, again,
- 18:28Speaker 2: I'm not like, oh, this is a series they should win.
- 18:32Speaker 2: I don't have I don't have that thought in my head.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Absolutely, because when you look at tonight's game Game two,
- 18:39Speaker 1: when folks are listening to this, yeah, Joel Embiid did
- 18:41Speaker 1: not play in this game. Look how close that Look
- 18:44Speaker 1: how close they are here? And yes, Embiid did play
- 18:48Speaker 1: in Game one two. But I got to tell you,
- 18:50Speaker 1: and I'm not just saying this to be a homer,
- 18:53Speaker 1: but the scheduling that the NBA does at times with
- 18:56Speaker 1: these series is really bizarre. I mean, the Knicks head
- 19:00Speaker 1: off for quite some time, and the right the Sixers
- 19:04Speaker 1: are playing in Round two right after the Cell like
- 19:09Speaker 1: seriously two days after.
- 19:10Speaker 2: You know, ordinarily I would be like, uh yeah, I
- 19:14Speaker 2: don't want to sound like a Homer either, but I
- 19:16Speaker 2: actually had that that thought of like, you know, just
- 19:19Speaker 2: not realizing what day it is, and not just kind
- 19:21Speaker 2: of you're you're not really you're in your midst of
- 19:23Speaker 2: your work and you're not paying attention to what's going
- 19:25Speaker 2: on around you. And I remember seeing like, oh shit,
- 19:28Speaker 2: Game ones already, like I had. I actually had that
- 19:30Speaker 2: thought of like, oh already, Like I thought we'd have
- 19:33Speaker 2: like another night or two before we got into game
- 19:35Speaker 2: one of this series, but I guess not.
- 19:37Speaker 1: No, So yeah, advantage Knicks. Honestly, it is an advantage.
- 19:42Speaker 1: And I'm not just again not saying it to be
- 19:44Speaker 1: a Homer. That is the reality advantage Knicks here. And look,
- 19:48Speaker 1: if they they end up winning this series, I'm not
- 19:50Speaker 1: going to say it's because of that quick turnaround from
- 19:53Speaker 1: the Celtics series that the Sixers had to try to
- 19:55Speaker 1: adapt to, but it's it's it's part of it. For sure.
- 19:59Speaker 2: It helps, But I wish the tables were returned, and
- 20:02Speaker 2: I wish it was the Sixers that had that rest
- 20:04Speaker 2: time build in. I mean, I genuinely do. I'm envious
- 20:08Speaker 2: to the fact that the Knicks have that, But you know,
- 20:11Speaker 2: you have to play the cards that are dealt to you,
- 20:14Speaker 2: and you know, I don't know. Hopefully Embead's injury doesn't
- 20:17Speaker 2: keep him out for more than you know, this game,
- 20:20Speaker 2: but we'll see what happens.
- 20:21Speaker 1: He's been aggressive when he's on the court line.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Yeah, he has.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Absolutely he is showing heart on the court for what
- 20:30Speaker 1: the dialogue and the discourse has been all season. With
- 20:35Speaker 1: the fact that he is doing it just during the
- 20:38Speaker 1: latter part of the season Celtics series and now in
- 20:42Speaker 1: the guts that even showed in Game one against the Knicks,
- 20:46Speaker 1: I go back to the fact that, you know what,
- 20:49Speaker 1: there are criticisms out there, some perhaps valid every now
- 20:53Speaker 1: and again, but the guy is just a fighter out there,
- 20:57Speaker 1: and he gives a crap.
- 20:59Speaker 2: He does want to be there. Yes, And I I remember,
- 21:04Speaker 2: you know, you're just scrolling on Facebook and the basically
- 21:07Speaker 2: the entire first half of the season, whenever I would
- 21:10Speaker 2: read an article on the Sixers and I would look
- 21:11Speaker 2: in the comments, I wouldn't have to scroll too far
- 21:13Speaker 2: down before there was like a picture of a mister
- 21:16Speaker 2: Softy logo with em Beid's face on it, right, like
- 21:19Speaker 2: I mean like all, like the whole entire first half
- 21:23Speaker 2: of the season. Yeah, because you know, yeah, he wasn't
- 21:26Speaker 2: playing and this was a continuation. It's like, Okay, here
- 21:29Speaker 2: we go again, you know with this, and you know
- 21:31Speaker 2: so and when he's getting paid the money he is
- 21:34Speaker 2: getting paid, that does make it stand out a little
- 21:36Speaker 2: bit more. But you know, I have no question that
- 21:40Speaker 2: he wants to be there. I just have a question
- 21:43Speaker 2: that his body is ever going to let him be there. Absolutely,
- 21:46Speaker 2: So it's just what it is. Unfortunately, it's not his
- 21:49Speaker 2: fault the Sixers decided to give him sixty seven million
- 21:53Speaker 2: dollars a year. Any single person either on the show
- 21:57Speaker 2: or watching the show would have taken deal in a heartbeat.
- 22:01Speaker 2: They wouldn't even have left the Sixers finish the sentence
- 22:03Speaker 2: before they started signing a contract. Absolutely, I mean you
- 22:06Speaker 2: can't really fault them for that.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Absolutely. What are your thoughts here with the Sixers here
- 22:11Speaker 1: in round two against the New York Knicks. You think
- 22:14Speaker 1: they're gonna pull it out? What are your thoughts on
- 22:16Speaker 1: Joel embiid now in terms of that narrative really turning
- 22:19Speaker 1: around here towards this latter part of the season in postseason,
- 22:23Speaker 1: we'd love to hear your thoughts as well. If you
- 22:25Speaker 1: want to shoot us off an email Philadelphia Sports Table
- 22:27Speaker 1: at gmail dot com. We'd love to hear from you
- 22:29Speaker 1: there as well. So that being said, we're gonna take
- 22:33Speaker 1: a break and we get back, We're gonna get into
- 22:35Speaker 1: some Philadelphia Flyers talk. Stick with us. The Philadelphia Flyers
- 22:40Speaker 1: have surprised us in so many ways this season. Like
- 22:44Speaker 1: the Philadelphia seventy six ers. The Flyers are in the
- 22:47Speaker 1: second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Yes, they are
- 22:50Speaker 1: down two to nothing in this series against Carolina as
- 22:55Speaker 1: we are recording this, and we just wanted to give
- 22:57Speaker 1: our thoughts on, you know, in general one, where the
- 22:59Speaker 1: team is at, if we think they can actually pull
- 23:02Speaker 1: this off. I'm gonna say right off the bat, len no,
- 23:06Speaker 1: I think they are not going to win this series
- 23:09Speaker 1: against Carolina, but I don't mind. I loved Game two,
- 23:14Speaker 1: the fight and the grit that they had. And gonna
- 23:16Speaker 1: be talking to Steven a bit from fly Purble just
- 23:21Speaker 1: about some of the details of Penn's series and then
- 23:26Speaker 1: the transition over to this series with Carolina. These are
- 23:30Speaker 1: young guys. They had a lot of fight in them,
- 23:33Speaker 1: you know, Sewan Katorier God playing some amazing hockey as well.
- 23:38Speaker 1: This is gravy again, just like the Sixers. I love
- 23:41Speaker 1: this as Philly sports fan, I just absolutely love it.
- 23:44Speaker 1: There's orange everywhere. You see it, everywhere, everybody's wearing their orange.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I if they don't beat Carolina, I am completely fine
- 23:52Speaker 1: with it because at the end of the day, it's
- 23:54Speaker 1: been a fun season to follow.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Yeah on h Yeah, I have no I have no
- 24:04Speaker 2: problem with with what's happened the season. I'm perfectly fine.
- 24:08Speaker 2: I do wish, like I know that they went up
- 24:11Speaker 2: to nothing in that game, and you know, getting up
- 24:14Speaker 2: on Carolina, I mean, you really have a chance to
- 24:17Speaker 2: steal a game on the road. I mean I was
- 24:21Speaker 2: kind of bummed that they couldn't capitalize on that. You
- 24:23Speaker 2: let Carolina back into the game and then they went
- 24:26Speaker 2: and overtime, So that's tough.
- 24:29Speaker 1: When they had opportunities to score too, by the way,
- 24:31Speaker 1: and that was hard.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's you know, there's you know, a
- 24:35Speaker 2: way you win in a way you lose that is
- 24:38Speaker 2: sometimes a little bit more crushing than other losses, perhaps,
- 24:42Speaker 2: you know, if you're going to go and lose three
- 24:44Speaker 2: nothing in game one, I mean, it sucks, but it
- 24:46Speaker 2: is what it is. The Hurricanes are the number one
- 24:48Speaker 2: seed in the East for a reason, so I mean
- 24:50Speaker 2: none of that is surprising to me, especially in their
- 24:52Speaker 2: own building. But man, heavily like that. It's just it
- 24:56Speaker 2: just feels like it missed opportunity. So you know, hopefully
- 24:59Speaker 2: they can get some confidence out of that, the fact
- 25:01Speaker 2: that they you know, did get the jump on Carolina
- 25:05Speaker 2: a little bit, and hopefully they can take that now
- 25:08Speaker 2: come and have the series come back to Philadelphia. They
- 25:10Speaker 2: can use that to their advantage and maybe the confidence
- 25:13Speaker 2: that they hopefully built in that first period of Game
- 25:16Speaker 2: two against Carolina and they can just you know, expand
- 25:20Speaker 2: that at home.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And I think you know we are seeing
- 25:24Speaker 1: I mean, we all know that Dan Vladar is the
- 25:28Speaker 1: MVP of this team after after the season is all
- 25:31Speaker 1: said and done. But there's only so much he can do,
- 25:34Speaker 1: you know, There's only so much weight that can be
- 25:36Speaker 1: put on his shoulders. We did PST special last week
- 25:39Speaker 1: with our friend Ryan Quigley, from Broadstreet Hockey dot Com
- 25:42Speaker 1: and we were talking about the fact that dan Vladar,
- 25:45Speaker 1: he's got the team on his shoulders, but man, there's
- 25:47Speaker 1: only so much that can be done. And going back
- 25:49Speaker 1: to what we were just saying, scoring opportunities that were
- 25:51Speaker 1: there and they were not able to capitalize on them.
- 25:54Speaker 1: That's not on dan Vladhar. You know, there's only so
- 25:56Speaker 1: much he's going to be able to do in front
- 25:58Speaker 1: of the net.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I mean, and that's you know, yeah, team game,
- 26:02Speaker 2: and that's you know, when you when you get that
- 26:05Speaker 2: opportunity and when you can when you can get to
- 26:08Speaker 2: get the drop on on somebody, you got to be
- 26:10Speaker 2: able to finish them off. And unfortunately, you know, the
- 26:13Speaker 2: Flyers in that game didn't do that. But again, I'm
- 26:17Speaker 2: just hoping they can take some level of confidence from
- 26:20Speaker 2: from that and from the fact that you know, they
- 26:23Speaker 2: they showed the season series before this this series even
- 26:26Speaker 2: started in the regular season. Yeah, Carolina won three out
- 26:30Speaker 2: of four of those regular season games, but every single
- 26:33Speaker 2: one of those games went to overtime. Yeah, so this
- 26:36Speaker 2: isn't a Carolina team that like, oh, we can't touch them,
- 26:40Speaker 2: we can't even get close to them. No, Flyers with
- 26:43Speaker 2: them in every single game this year, so it's not
- 26:47Speaker 2: you know, I expect Carolina to win the series, but
- 26:50Speaker 2: is it some insurmountable thing that can't happen. No, not
- 26:54Speaker 2: with the way the Flyers played them this year.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, well again, we'd love to we'd love
- 26:59Speaker 1: to hear from you. What are you thinking with this
- 27:01Speaker 1: series or you do you agree with Lenn and I.
- 27:03Speaker 1: If you're watching on YouTube, leave a comment below about
- 27:05Speaker 1: the Flyers and whether or not you think they could
- 27:08Speaker 1: possibly take Carolina or not. We're thinking no, thinking Carolina
- 27:12Speaker 1: is gonna win this series. Let us know what you're
- 27:15Speaker 1: thinking there on YouTube like this video as well. We'd
- 27:18Speaker 1: appreciate that and will help us out. And with that
- 27:22Speaker 1: being said, Buddy, I think I'm gonna let you go here,
- 27:23Speaker 1: if that's all right with you. I think I think
- 27:25Speaker 1: somebody did you go Betty by time too.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Well from we were we were both talking before the show,
- 27:31Speaker 2: and I think we both could stand again a good
- 27:33Speaker 2: night's rest.
- 27:34Speaker 1: So tired boys, tired boys. Yes, all right, well, folks,
- 27:39Speaker 1: we have got more Flyers talk coming your way again.
- 27:41Speaker 1: We've got Steve Jaco from Broadstreet Hockey dot Com and
- 27:45Speaker 1: fly Purble coming on. Stick with us. We're gonna get
- 27:47Speaker 1: to that interview in just a bit.
- 27:51Speaker 2: And now on the table.
- 27:56Speaker 1: All right, let's keep getting into this Philadelphia Flyers team
- 27:59Speaker 1: and what we're gonna be seeing during this second round
- 28:02Speaker 1: series as the Philadelphia Flyers are taking on the Carolina
- 28:06Speaker 1: Hurricanes Stanley Cup playoffs. Cannot believe we are still in
- 28:10Speaker 1: this space and in this area when it comes to
- 28:13Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Flyers and to get into more Flyers talk
- 28:17Speaker 1: with us this week. A lot of you know, a
- 28:19Speaker 1: lot of you know him in that voice from fly
- 28:22Speaker 1: Purbley over at Broadstreet Hockey dot com. We've got our
- 28:27Speaker 1: good friend Steve Jaco, Steve Buddy, thanks so much for
- 28:29Speaker 1: jumping on this week. Very much appreciated my pleasure.
- 28:33Speaker 4: Jeff always down to talk flyers, and I'm just excited
- 28:36Speaker 4: that people want to talk flyers right now. Z It's
- 28:39Speaker 4: felt like me and my friends have been talking it
- 28:41Speaker 4: for the past decade and nobody else wants to. So
- 28:45Speaker 4: it's nice now that like people on the street see
- 28:47Speaker 4: the Flyers here and they're like, oh my god, how
- 28:49Speaker 4: about them Flyers. You know, people are excited in a
- 28:51Speaker 4: way they haven't been in a long time.
- 28:53Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm.
- 28:54Speaker 3: Doing great, dude.
- 28:56Speaker 1: We're seeing so much orange being worn by folks like everywhere,
- 29:01Speaker 1: and you'd love to see it. Yeah, some people may say, Okay,
- 29:04Speaker 1: there's some Bandwagon fans here and there, but at the
- 29:06Speaker 1: end of the day, there's an excitement. There's an energy
- 29:09Speaker 1: with this team right now again, regardless that they are
- 29:12Speaker 1: down to nothing in this series against the Carolina Hurricanes
- 29:16Speaker 1: as we are recording this, but there's just so much
- 29:18Speaker 1: energy and it's so great to see.
- 29:20Speaker 3: It's great to see.
- 29:21Speaker 4: And hey, to the Bandwagon fans, come on down, come
- 29:24Speaker 4: on down.
- 29:24Speaker 3: The water's fine.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Because I love it, like because I think this is
- 29:29Speaker 4: such a criminally underrated sport and one that I please
- 29:33Speaker 4: like my sport. Please come enjoy it because it is
- 29:36Speaker 4: so much fun and seeing people get into it that
- 29:39Speaker 4: might not have considered hockey before. Because frankly, the Flyer
- 29:42Speaker 4: has been playing bad hockey for most of the past decade. Yes,
- 29:45Speaker 4: so you know, it's finally, it finally feels like they're
- 29:49Speaker 4: on the way up and this is the ground floor,
- 29:52Speaker 4: so come on down, let's get into it.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely bad hockey. For the past decade, We've all
- 29:58Speaker 1: been watching this team and and you know what bad
- 30:01Speaker 1: front office management too. Basically seriously until Danny Brierre came
- 30:05Speaker 1: in here, Steve and look, I hesitate to say that
- 30:10Speaker 1: he's really getting this team and organization to where they
- 30:13Speaker 1: need to be to someday be contenders, but that's what's
- 30:17Speaker 1: happening right now, and it's like it's bizarre. I'm hesitating
- 30:20Speaker 1: to say it. But again, second round in Stanley Cup
- 30:22Speaker 1: playoffs here it's right in front of.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Us, it feels really good.
- 30:26Speaker 4: I feel very confident in what Brierre has been doing,
- 30:30Speaker 4: and I felt pretty confident the whole way. I liked
- 30:33Speaker 4: how he came in. They sent him to business school
- 30:35Speaker 4: right like.
- 30:36Speaker 3: He learned the ropes.
- 30:37Speaker 4: He was with a minor league team and I interviewed
- 30:40Speaker 4: him a few years ago with BSh. We were at
- 30:43Speaker 4: there was a Flyers charity event. It was like Flyers
- 30:46Speaker 4: alumni versus Snyder Hockey alumni, and they were playing with
- 30:49Speaker 4: and against them.
- 30:50Speaker 3: It was a really cool event.
- 30:51Speaker 4: I got to interview like Scott Hartnell, Chemo teaman in
- 30:55Speaker 4: and Danny brier that night. And this is when Brere
- 30:57Speaker 4: is on his way up, and you know, you could
- 30:59Speaker 4: just tell he's a sharp guy. You can tell he's,
- 31:01Speaker 4: you know, a really smart guy, and I just I
- 31:04Speaker 4: think he brings a lot of consideration into this. And
- 31:06Speaker 4: the thing I like best about Danny Brier is that
- 31:09Speaker 4: he is somebody who has succeeded in the modern era
- 31:11Speaker 4: of hockey, which most flyers gms. You're looking at guys
- 31:15Speaker 4: that like even Ron Hexstall, who was a little bit
- 31:17Speaker 4: new focused, right, yeah, a.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Little bit newer school.
- 31:21Speaker 4: He's still he played in the eighties primarily, right, Like,
- 31:24Speaker 4: he's most famous for going at Chris Chellio's blocker first,
- 31:28Speaker 4: so hexy, you know, at least had some more modern ideas.
- 31:32Speaker 4: He didn't know how to get any modern players, but
- 31:35Speaker 4: he's sure had some modern ideas about the game. Danny
- 31:37Speaker 4: Brier has played hockey in the past fifteen years and
- 31:41Speaker 4: been to a Stanley Cup final in the past sixteen years,
- 31:44Speaker 4: so he's a guy who gets it and he knows that, like,
- 31:47Speaker 4: you need more than just size to compete, which is
- 31:49Speaker 4: hilarious considering their last draft was like mostly sized. But
- 31:52Speaker 4: I think they understand that it has to be size
- 31:55Speaker 4: and skill and speed.
- 31:57Speaker 3: It's a modern.
- 31:58Speaker 4: Game, and I think he's taken that philosophy so far
- 32:01Speaker 4: and I really like what he's done so compared to
- 32:04Speaker 4: Chuck Fletcher, compared to ron Akstaf love what he's done absolutely.
- 32:08Speaker 4: And the big thing I saw graphic the other day
- 32:10Speaker 4: where they're talking about, you know, basically like where for
- 32:15Speaker 4: the teams in the playoffs, in the second round of
- 32:17Speaker 4: the playoffs, like where their players primarily came from, a
- 32:20Speaker 4: lot of them were trades for most of the teams,
- 32:23Speaker 4: and the Flyers had their fair share of trades, but
- 32:25Speaker 4: I think the Flyers had, if not the largest, at
- 32:28Speaker 4: least close to the largest percentage of homegrown players on there.
- 32:31Speaker 4: So a lot of this is fostering talent within and
- 32:34Speaker 4: trying to be smart about where to make those trades.
- 32:37Speaker 4: You know, you look at like Morgan Frost and Joel Farrabee,
- 32:40Speaker 4: I still don't love the trades on paper, but it's
- 32:42Speaker 4: kind of a movie you have to make to clear
- 32:44Speaker 4: out room to bring up some of these kids.
- 32:46Speaker 3: And when you look at.
- 32:47Speaker 4: Martone, Miishkoff and Bump and Barkie, it's really hard to
- 32:52Speaker 4: complain about the results you've gotten.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Absolutely yeah, yeah, you're absolutely correct. So let's get into
- 32:57Speaker 1: what we have seen here during this second round against
- 33:00Speaker 1: Carolina and I think I think, Steve, you know, the
- 33:04Speaker 1: one thing that the Flyers did. They did so many
- 33:08Speaker 1: good things, so many right things in Game two, but
- 33:13Speaker 1: in the end, of course, they didn't win. And you
- 33:16Speaker 1: take a step back and you reflect on that game,
- 33:19Speaker 1: and you say, man, should we actually be discouraged from
- 33:22Speaker 1: here on out? Given the sheer fight that they had
- 33:24Speaker 1: in Game two with an eventual loss. I still have
- 33:27Speaker 1: hope that we are going to see that fight and
- 33:30Speaker 1: that we are going to see some wins in this series.
- 33:32Speaker 1: What are your thoughts here based on what we saw
- 33:34Speaker 1: in game two again, that fight and that grit that
- 33:36Speaker 1: they had, should we be discouraged or where are you
- 33:40Speaker 1: at right now?
- 33:41Speaker 4: I'll be honest, I was discouraged from the start.
- 33:43Speaker 3: This is a tough series.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:45Speaker 4: I feel like a lot of the casuals who might
- 33:47Speaker 4: be coming into this, a lot of the bandwagoners don't
- 33:50Speaker 4: realize how good the Carolina hurts.
- 33:51Speaker 1: They're so good.
- 33:52Speaker 3: They're an outstanding hockey team.
- 33:54Speaker 4: They were the second best team in the league this year,
- 33:56Speaker 4: the best team in the conference. They are such a
- 33:58Speaker 4: well constructed roster over there. Broad Stree hockey alum Eric
- 34:03Speaker 4: Tulsky has put that team together. He has been there
- 34:06Speaker 4: for a lot of these guys coming in in the
- 34:07Speaker 4: front office. Rob Brindemore might be the best head coach
- 34:10Speaker 4: in the NHL. They're an excellent team. So even if
- 34:14Speaker 4: the Flyers get swept, I'm not discouraged by the overall
- 34:17Speaker 4: result of this season because when we talked in preseason,
- 34:21Speaker 4: a lot of us said, like, Okay, this team could
- 34:23Speaker 4: either finish like third worst in the league, or they
- 34:27Speaker 4: could sneak into the playoffs and maybe surprise them win
- 34:29Speaker 4: and win around. And we're in the best case scenario
- 34:31Speaker 4: right now. We're already there and beating Pittsburgh. It doesn't
- 34:35Speaker 4: get better than that. It kind of felt like the
- 34:37Speaker 4: season finale of a TV show when they beat the
- 34:40Speaker 4: Pittsburgh Penguins, you know, like like Major League one. Right,
- 34:43Speaker 4: it felt like, okay, good, I'm satisfied. But this is
- 34:47Speaker 4: I think this is an important experience for this team,
- 34:49Speaker 4: win or lose, because they're kind of learning what it's
- 34:53Speaker 4: like to play this heavy hitter. It's important for the
- 34:56Speaker 4: front office to see this kind of talent up front
- 34:59Speaker 4: in personal you know, like this is what you need
- 35:02Speaker 4: to get to, this is what you're aspiring for don't
- 35:04Speaker 4: settle for what you have. This is a good starting point.
- 35:07Speaker 4: This is what you want to get to. As far
- 35:09Speaker 4: as the actual series goes, though I don't feel great.
- 35:13Speaker 4: I felt like they were overmatched. This is such a
- 35:16Speaker 4: good team as a team that doesn't lose, they're cool
- 35:18Speaker 4: like the Pittsburgh Penguins did. And this is also just
- 35:21Speaker 4: a team that has a really good mix of young
- 35:23Speaker 4: and old. Logan Stankhoven's really come into his own in
- 35:27Speaker 4: the playoffs and he's such an important young piece for them.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Sebastianajos and his prime outstanding player Jacob Slaven might be
- 35:34Speaker 4: the best defenseman defensive defenseman in the NHL. Obviously the
- 35:37Speaker 4: best defense between mccarr and Hughes. But you know, they're
- 35:41Speaker 4: just so good and I think the Flyers can sneak
- 35:44Speaker 4: one in. But recent injury news, the injuries are killing
- 35:47Speaker 4: them right now. You know, not having not having Tippet
- 35:50Speaker 4: for the first two games crushed them because dipp it
- 35:52Speaker 4: was I think a huge part of their success against Pittsburgh.
- 35:55Speaker 4: And now we got the news today that looks like
- 35:57Speaker 4: Noah Case is out for the rest of the playoffs.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Absolutely well, let's get into that. You know, with Noah
- 36:01Speaker 1: Kates out Christian Dvorak, you know he's been banged up
- 36:05Speaker 1: as well. You mentioned the injuries, A shiner, Yeah, exactly,
- 36:09Speaker 1: Holy cow. I mean, but I wonder and there was
- 36:11Speaker 1: an article on Broadstreet Hockey dot com today about it
- 36:15Speaker 1: whether or not Shunktorie should be moved up within the
- 36:18Speaker 1: lineup here. I mean, he's certainly found some new life
- 36:21Speaker 1: in the playoffs here. What are your thoughts on what
- 36:22Speaker 1: they could do with kots here? Given the injuries, given
- 36:26Speaker 1: Dvorak being banged up, what are your thoughts here?
- 36:29Speaker 4: This is a really interesting topic because kots was a
- 36:32Speaker 4: guy that for most of the season the fan base
- 36:35Speaker 4: was acting like just a disaster.
- 36:37Speaker 3: How do you buy him out?
- 36:38Speaker 1: Yeah, he's done.
- 36:39Speaker 4: How do you catapult him in the sun, whatever it takes.
- 36:42Speaker 4: And he has looked outstanding in these playoffs. He's actually
- 36:45Speaker 4: looked good. Weirdly, since they picked up Luke Glendenning from
- 36:50Speaker 4: the Devils, right right, Glen Glendenning's such a drop in
- 36:53Speaker 4: the bucket move that nobody batted an eye at. And
- 36:56Speaker 4: since he started playing with Katoria, I think they've actually
- 36:59Speaker 4: had great chemistry together and really played well and Katoria
- 37:02Speaker 4: just looks like a different guy.
- 37:03Speaker 3: Like he's thrown his body around in a way. I
- 37:05Speaker 3: don't know if he's ever done this career. He's you know,
- 37:08Speaker 3: putting a lot of shots on net.
- 37:09Speaker 4: He's been the Flyer's best offensive player in this series
- 37:12Speaker 4: so far.
- 37:12Speaker 3: He's probably been their best player in the.
- 37:14Speaker 4: Carolina so I think so far, which is wild because
- 37:17Speaker 4: Sean Katorier, right, but he has also Sean Katurier, and
- 37:21Speaker 4: he's a super smart player. He might be the smartest
- 37:23Speaker 4: player on the roster. He's got incredible hockey sense.
- 37:27Speaker 3: I would consider.
- 37:28Speaker 4: Moving him up just out of necessity right Like they're
- 37:32Speaker 4: putting Denver Barkie at center right now. And I really
- 37:35Speaker 4: like Denver Barkie. I think he's shown some good stuff.
- 37:37Speaker 4: But you saw in that last game that it's kind
- 37:41Speaker 4: of a problem when you're facing a team like Carolina
- 37:44Speaker 4: to put these three inexperienced guys together, because I believe
- 37:47Speaker 4: they had Bump Barkie and Martone together, which I love
- 37:51Speaker 4: all those guys, but I think he kind of needs
- 37:53Speaker 4: to spread the youth out a little bit and mix
- 37:55Speaker 4: them with the vets a little bit, and they're you know,
- 37:58Speaker 4: one of the problems with the series as you're seeing
- 37:59Speaker 4: that good mix of youth and experience against the team
- 38:04Speaker 4: that is mostly youth with a little just a dash
- 38:06Speaker 4: of experience, and Pittsburgh, I mean, they're way too much
- 38:10Speaker 4: experience without another youth. Caroline is a really good mix.
- 38:13Speaker 4: This is why they're Airic contender right now. So when
- 38:17Speaker 4: you're looking at Katoria, I wouldn't mind mixing him up.
- 38:20Speaker 4: You know, I think he's played well with Miishkoff at times.
- 38:23Speaker 4: I think he's played well. I mean, I think he
- 38:25Speaker 4: could play with anybody right now, because you don't.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Have any centers right like.
- 38:30Speaker 3: Ziegres Is.
- 38:32Speaker 4: I mean, I think Zegress is the center, but he's
- 38:35Speaker 4: still not the best defensive player on the roster. Kattorie
- 38:38Speaker 4: is playing like fifteen sixteen minutes a night right now,
- 38:41Speaker 4: so I I would consider moving him up if I
- 38:44Speaker 4: was Rick Hacket, especially if you don't have Owen Tippett
- 38:47Speaker 4: back in this game, because you're really I mean, he's
- 38:49Speaker 4: gonna play the minutes anyway, so we're gonna see what happens.
- 38:52Speaker 4: That said, the one thing I will say is he's
- 38:54Speaker 4: had really good chemistry with Glenn Denning, so it's kind
- 38:57Speaker 4: of hard to break those two up, but at the
- 38:59Speaker 4: end of the day, what's best for the roster. And also,
- 39:01Speaker 4: I think you're going to get better offensive opportunities if
- 39:04Speaker 4: you move Katoria up in the lineup.
- 39:05Speaker 1: There's an argument to be made for doing so for sure. Again,
- 39:09Speaker 1: folks talking to Steve Jaco from Broadstreet Hockey dot com
- 39:12Speaker 1: the Fly Purble podcast over at broad Street Hockey. Check

- 39:38Speaker 1: find you on the interwebs. Out there.
- 39:39Speaker 4: Oh absolutely so yeah, I mean, as Jeff said, it's
- 39:42Speaker 4: broad Street Hockey dot Com. I've been doing a little
- 39:45Speaker 4: bit of writing the season, which has been nice to
- 39:46Speaker 4: get back into the writing.
- 39:48Speaker 3: But also, you know, broad Street Hockey.
- 39:50Speaker 4: We're on all the major podcast services over Spotify, Apple
- 39:55Speaker 4: YouTube are putting out stuff all the time. We also
- 39:57Speaker 4: have some videos that aren't just the podcast over on
- 39:59Speaker 4: the YouTube channel. We got Kyle cranking out some great
- 40:02Speaker 4: videos over there as an awesome Flyer site video, so.
- 40:05Speaker 3: There's some really good stuff on there.
- 40:06Speaker 4: I also freelance over phly with Bill Matts and Charlie O'Connor,
- 40:10Speaker 4: so you can catch me on there.
- 40:12Speaker 3: I probably did close to half the post games this year,
- 40:15Speaker 3: so I did a lot of them.
- 40:17Speaker 4: Yep, and check me out on there as well. But yeah,
- 40:19Speaker 4: broad Street Hockey PHLI.
- 40:21Speaker 1: All right, very good, folks, We're gonna take a break.
- 40:23Speaker 1: When we come back. We've got more Flyers talk coming
- 40:25Speaker 1: your way. All right, we're back and Steve talking about
- 40:32Speaker 1: this series here. I really think, and just again, based
- 40:36Speaker 1: on what we saw in Game two, Flyers really need
- 40:40Speaker 1: to capitalize on scoring opportunities or they're going to take
- 40:42Speaker 1: Game three. I know that may seem obvious, but they
- 40:45Speaker 1: had ten scoring chances in overtime in Game two, seven
- 40:49Speaker 1: of which were on the high danger variety. And it
- 40:53Speaker 1: wasn't all Travis Konnectney's fault on that breakaway that we've
- 40:57Speaker 1: all been talking about. But there are guys who need
- 41:00Speaker 1: to bring their a game to the rest of this series,
- 41:03Speaker 1: especially when you have those scoring chances and scoring opportunities.
- 41:07Speaker 1: I uh, I don't think this is a surprise to
- 41:11Speaker 1: say any of this at all, but they have to
- 41:15Speaker 1: take advantage of these opportunities if they're gonna at least
- 41:18Speaker 1: steal one or two from Carolina here.
- 41:21Speaker 4: I think what really sums up how little the Flyers
- 41:24Speaker 4: have been scoring in the playoffs is the fact that
- 41:26Speaker 4: they're leading scorer right now. Their leading point guy is
- 41:29Speaker 4: Rasmus Resta Lineen Ristal Line and leading the way with
- 41:32Speaker 4: five points in eight games. A whole bunch of guys before,
- 41:35Speaker 4: a couple guys with three, a couple a bunch of
- 41:37Speaker 4: guys with two, So like, Risto can't be your top
- 41:40Speaker 4: scorer if you really want to succeed.
- 41:42Speaker 3: And I think Risto has had a good Playoff.
- 41:44Speaker 4: You know, he's had a couple of games that haven't
- 41:46Speaker 4: been ideal, but for the most part, playoff Risto has
- 41:50Speaker 4: lived up to the hype. But the Flyers just aren't scoring.
- 41:53Speaker 4: I mean, the last time they scored more than two
- 41:55Speaker 4: goals in a game in these playoffs was I believe
- 41:59Speaker 4: Game three against Pittsburgh at home. Yeah, so Game three
- 42:03Speaker 4: at home when they won five to two against Pittsburgh Penguins,
- 42:06Speaker 4: it's the last time they scored more than two goals
- 42:09Speaker 4: in a game. And that's not gonna get you past
- 42:11Speaker 4: the Carolina Hurricanes. And the Hurricanes are good. I think
- 42:15Speaker 4: Anderson has been, you know, really good for them, But
- 42:17Speaker 4: they just don't give up a ton of great quality chances.
- 42:20Speaker 4: So when you do get those opportunities like they did
- 42:23Speaker 4: in overtime, you got to take advantage. Like they came
- 42:25Speaker 4: out flying in the last game. Yes, like that's the
- 42:28Speaker 4: start you wanted to see because I thought they might
- 42:31Speaker 4: get swept, and I still think they might get swept,
- 42:33Speaker 4: but I hope they don't because I'm in the building
- 42:35Speaker 4: tomorrow night podcasting.
- 42:37Speaker 3: I'll be on the concourse.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Yes, take a look for me and Bill.
- 42:40Speaker 3: It's gonna be awesome.
- 42:41Speaker 4: We did for Game six of the Penguin series, unbelievable experience,
- 42:45Speaker 4: Like yes, I was actually overwhelmed at the sound at
- 42:48Speaker 4: first because it was just like so loud, one of
- 42:50Speaker 4: the loudest.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Experiences in my life. So they got it. They just
- 42:54Speaker 1: have to take advantage of these opportunities that are in
- 42:57Speaker 1: front of them, and I guess the next aspect of
- 43:00Speaker 1: the conversation here, Steve is and it gets to two
- 43:03Speaker 1: part question. Need to talk about who really needs to
- 43:06Speaker 1: step up in your opinion here in game three and
- 43:09Speaker 1: also which players have also been most impactful. So let's
- 43:12Speaker 1: start off with the players that you think really need
- 43:15Speaker 1: to step up here in game three.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Yeah, this is a tough one.
- 43:18Speaker 4: So I'm gonna put this on the vets here because
- 43:21Speaker 4: while you want to see the kids step up, and
- 43:22Speaker 4: I really do want to see the kids step up,
- 43:24Speaker 4: they're kids, right, they are like we're talking about twenty one,
- 43:27Speaker 4: twenty two, we're talking about a nineteen year old and
- 43:29Speaker 4: Porter Martin. Yes, you can't pin all your hopes and
- 43:33Speaker 4: dreams on these guys. It's great when they show up,
- 43:36Speaker 4: but your leadership comes from these vets. And if Owen
- 43:39Speaker 4: tippets in there, that's a guy I'm looking for a
- 43:41Speaker 4: big time connect me, connect me. It was the points
- 43:44Speaker 4: leader in the season. He is your veteran on ice leader,
- 43:48Speaker 4: like he is like a heart and soul guy for
- 43:50Speaker 4: this team. I want to see Travis Connectney get on
- 43:52Speaker 4: the score sheet. He's only got one goal and three
- 43:54Speaker 4: assists so far.
- 43:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I want to see Connectney pot another goal. I
- 43:58Speaker 3: mean that's what he does, right yeap. And then like Trevor.
- 44:01Speaker 4: Zegres is a guy who had a lot of success
- 44:04Speaker 4: against the Hurricanes in the regular season. He's been one
- 44:07Speaker 4: of the key guys for the Flyers offensively all season.
- 44:11Speaker 4: He's been quiet, and I you know, before Kate's got hurt,
- 44:15Speaker 4: we were kind of spitballing, like, I wonder, do you
- 44:18Speaker 4: maybe try putting Ziegra's back at wing to generate some
- 44:21Speaker 4: offense because he was really really good with Christian Davorak
- 44:25Speaker 4: and Travis Knnecny earlier in the season and maybe that's
- 44:28Speaker 4: a combination that can get everything jumps starting. But now
- 44:31Speaker 4: if Kate's is hurt, if Tip it's out, I don't
- 44:34Speaker 4: know one guy i'd love to see step up from.
- 44:38Speaker 4: It's like a slight vet like he's a younger guy,
- 44:41Speaker 4: but he's been here a couple of years. Tyson Forrester,
- 44:43Speaker 4: who has struggled a lot. I think he's still hurt.
- 44:46Speaker 4: I think he's having trouble with fatigue coming back from
- 44:49Speaker 4: that injury like he did. But he's also had some
- 44:52Speaker 4: really good opportunities and has just not been able to
- 44:55Speaker 4: bury them. In fact, zero points in eight playoff games.
- 44:58Speaker 4: Now for Tyson Forrester, which is unbelievable because he's one
- 45:02Speaker 4: of the best goal scorers on the team. So I
- 45:04Speaker 4: think if the Flyers are going to win a couple
- 45:06Speaker 4: of games in the series, they're gonna need Tyson Forrester
- 45:09Speaker 4: to figure it out and find a way to score
- 45:12Speaker 4: a goal because he is He's probably got the best
- 45:14Speaker 4: shot on the team right there. Him and Mishkoff had
- 45:16Speaker 4: the best shots and Zegers. You gotta throw Zegers in
- 45:19Speaker 4: that conversation.
- 45:20Speaker 3: So he's a guy.
- 45:22Speaker 4: I'd love to see Mischoff step up, but again, he's
- 45:23Speaker 4: twenty one. I think he's having trouble with the North
- 45:26Speaker 4: American game in the playoffs. It's very physical. He's not
- 45:30Speaker 4: really a physical guy. He needs some open space. I
- 45:33Speaker 4: think Mishkov, we're gonna have to revisit the conversation next
- 45:37Speaker 4: year before having a good evaluation. Uh Forrester, though he's
- 45:40Speaker 4: worked in Rick Tocket system, he was a goal scoring
- 45:43Speaker 4: machine early in the system.
- 45:44Speaker 3: I want to see Tyson Forrester.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Score in terms of the most impactful is it gonna are
- 45:49Speaker 1: we really gonna be relying on those vets that you're
- 45:52Speaker 1: talking about too, with Katoria, the way he's been playing,
- 45:55Speaker 1: Rasmus wrista line in. Is it gonna be those two
- 45:57Speaker 1: guys who we need to be the most impactful.
- 46:00Speaker 4: I mean, Katorier has been super impactful. I think Katoria
- 46:04Speaker 4: has been great. It's the best I've seen him in
- 46:06Speaker 4: a long time, which has been awesome. Sandheim has been
- 46:09Speaker 4: sneaky good too. Like you don't think about Sandheim's game,
- 46:12Speaker 4: but Sanaheim was so good against Sidney Crosby. And when
- 46:16Speaker 4: you let him get into the offensive zone, he's very
- 46:18Speaker 4: dangerous the way he can sneak up and you saw
- 46:21Speaker 4: this a lot in the Olympics, where he sneaks up
- 46:23Speaker 4: to the side and he does these like great cross
- 46:26Speaker 4: crease passes where guys can try to slam dunk it in.
- 46:29Speaker 4: He's such a good offensive player you forget sometimes, but
- 46:33Speaker 4: he's been really good. I think Marton's had moments where
- 46:36Speaker 4: he's looked really good. Marton's had a couple opportunities that
- 46:38Speaker 4: I want to see him bury, but again, he's nineteen
- 46:41Speaker 4: years old. A month and a half ago he was
- 46:42Speaker 4: playing for Michigan state, right, So like, how much can
- 46:46Speaker 4: you really pin on that guy? And uh, yeah, I'm
- 46:49Speaker 4: trying to think of guys who have been like super
- 46:51Speaker 4: impactful so far. I mean, I've for the most part
- 46:54Speaker 4: like Jamie Drysdale's game.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Yeah, we're talking.
- 46:56Speaker 3: About a lot of defensive guys, you know.
- 46:57Speaker 4: And if I'm putting one another guy in the step
- 46:59Speaker 4: up agree, I have not loved the Christian Devorax playoffs
- 47:02Speaker 4: so far.
- 47:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I would really like to see him step up.
- 47:05Speaker 4: He was a I think he was tied for third
- 47:07Speaker 4: leading scorer on the team this year. Yep, So that's
- 47:10Speaker 4: another guy I really want to see step up into it.
- 47:12Speaker 4: But yeah, it's tough, man. This is a tough series.
- 47:16Speaker 4: It isn't I don't really know offensively who's going to
- 47:20Speaker 4: turn it on at this point, but.
- 47:22Speaker 3: Somebody has to.
- 47:23Speaker 4: And I don't want to see that home crowd get
- 47:26Speaker 4: super disappointed tomorrow.
- 47:28Speaker 3: I feel like they might think. But I'd love to
- 47:31Speaker 3: be wrong about that.
- 47:32Speaker 1: I would love it too. I absolutely would look second
- 47:36Speaker 1: round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Everything is gravy here
- 47:39Speaker 1: at this point. You know, we're seeing in Game two
- 47:42Speaker 1: how tough and how hard this team played and these
- 47:45Speaker 1: young guys as part of this quote rebuild just mixing
- 47:50Speaker 1: it up. I mean, it was so great to see.
- 47:52Speaker 1: And I guess to end our conversation here, Steve, I
- 47:58Speaker 1: want to get into Rick Tockett because you know, I've
- 48:00Speaker 1: had a lot of folks on from Broadstreet Hockey dot
- 48:02Speaker 1: Com on the podcast over the course of this season,
- 48:06Speaker 1: and there's that theme of certain criticisms of Rick Hacket.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Rightfully so a lot of us have criticized him, But
- 48:14Speaker 1: I mean, the team is here in the second round,
- 48:16Speaker 1: and I wonder how should we be characterizing him as
- 48:20Speaker 1: the head coach of this team at this point in time.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's it's kind of a bizarre question
- 48:26Speaker 1: and a bizarre thought process because again, we didn't like
- 48:29Speaker 1: certain things with him during the course of this season,
- 48:32Speaker 1: but the team is here. Now, what are your thoughts? Man?
- 48:35Speaker 4: Man, this is the question of the season, and it's
- 48:40Speaker 4: I did more podcasts this season than I've ever done
- 48:43Speaker 4: in my life. Yeah, like this is and I've done
- 48:45Speaker 4: a lot of Flyer podcasts because I've been doing this
- 48:47Speaker 4: since like twenty thirteen, twenty fourteen somethingwhere around there. So
- 48:51Speaker 4: to say I did the most I did in my
- 48:53Speaker 4: life is crazy, right I did so. I talked a
- 48:55Speaker 4: lot about Rick Tocket this year, and my opinion has
- 48:59Speaker 4: wildly varied on him. You'll probably if you listen to
- 49:03Speaker 4: three different podcasts from your three different points in the season,
- 49:05Speaker 4: I probably have a completely different opinion on Tacket at
- 49:10Speaker 4: each time.
- 49:10Speaker 1: Yep.
- 49:11Speaker 4: Overall, you gotta say he's done a good job because
- 49:14Speaker 4: no Flyers coach has gotten them to the second round
- 49:16Speaker 4: since Lane Vino back in twenty twenty. We of course
- 49:19Speaker 4: remember how Lane Vigno's ended. Not great, but you know,
- 49:24Speaker 4: like Hackstall obviously an abject disaster, this is probably the
- 49:28Speaker 4: best coaching job we've seen since Lovia. Let I mean,
- 49:31Speaker 4: you could say Vignolle because Vinoe. Everything was going great
- 49:34Speaker 4: in twenty twenty until you know Covid, Yes, and then
- 49:38Speaker 4: when Niskanen leaves that team, they kind of fall apart
- 49:41Speaker 4: without niscan in for some reason, which is still wild
- 49:43Speaker 4: to me.
- 49:44Speaker 3: But talk man.
- 49:47Speaker 4: So he's done some good things, right, Like you look
- 49:48Speaker 4: at some of the like Jamie Drysdale's progress has continued,
- 49:52Speaker 4: He's looked fantastic, Wristol Lineen has looked really good. I
- 49:56Speaker 4: think Ziegres has fit in better with the Flyers than
- 49:59Speaker 4: anybody could anticipated he would.
- 50:01Speaker 3: So you're seeing some big wins the way.
- 50:03Speaker 4: Martone was able to just slot into the team like
- 50:06Speaker 4: so seamlessly. Yeah, you got to give credit to the
- 50:08Speaker 4: coaching staff there for sure. But the big criticism you're
- 50:12Speaker 4: going to have of Tacket at the end of the
- 50:14Speaker 4: day has to do with his handling of Mathe Mishkov.
- 50:17Speaker 4: Matthey Mishkoff. He has the flaw where he comes in
- 50:19Speaker 4: with a horrible offseason workout regiment which basically was non existent,
- 50:24Speaker 4: and he also they just were not on the same
- 50:27Speaker 4: page all year. I want to see how that goes
- 50:30Speaker 4: next year. But if you're looking at this objectively, if
- 50:34Speaker 4: you're looking at this and somebody who's not been in
- 50:35Speaker 4: the trenches talking about this every day, who also I
- 50:39Speaker 4: personally love Matthe Mishkoff, and I do understand frustration with him,
- 50:43Speaker 4: But I truly think he's a special player that you
- 50:45Speaker 4: kind of, you know, a Vechkin type, fashion need to.
- 50:48Speaker 3: Kind of cater to to put him in good situations.
- 50:51Speaker 3: But I don't love the way he's treated Mishkov. But overall,
- 50:54Speaker 3: I think the guys like him.
- 50:56Speaker 4: I think he has done a good job, and you
- 51:00Speaker 4: cannot deny that he has them in the best position
- 51:02Speaker 4: they've been in in a long time. These guys love
- 51:05Speaker 4: each other too. This is a locker room that's super tight.
- 51:08Speaker 4: They will go to war for each other, and they
- 51:09Speaker 4: have gone to war for each other. In that Penguin series,
- 51:12Speaker 4: Owen Tippett is like you hear about how much like
- 51:15Speaker 4: he just loves being on this team. Zegris loves being
- 51:18Speaker 4: on this team. So yeah, I think if you're a
- 51:20Speaker 4: bad coach, right, if the guys hate you, the locker
- 51:24Speaker 4: room is not this joyful. And you see the end
- 51:27Speaker 4: of Tortorella right, bad bad vibes all around Karren, So yes,
- 51:32Speaker 4: you can see when things go wrong. I will give
- 51:35Speaker 4: top credit. I think he's done an overall good job.
- 51:38Speaker 4: I want to see what adjustments are made in the
- 51:40Speaker 4: next season. I want to see if this team can
- 51:43Speaker 4: replicate this and do better.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, what a great way to end this discussion
