- 0:02Come up with a scripture verse that really stuck
- 0:05out to you this week as you read. And we'll discuss
- 0:08it and hash it around and see really what it
- 0:11means. And in March was my turn. And I was reading
- 0:17Ezekiel chapter 4. I usually don't get in the
- 0:21Old Testament because I get mixed up with this
- 0:24king and that king and Jeroboam and Fishbrain
- 0:26and everything else. But I usually can get something
- 0:29out of it. I get that nugget that God has served
- 0:32for me. And I read this passage over and over
- 0:36again. And I thought, there's something here.
- 0:41There's something here. I don't get involved
- 0:45in historical settings. Maybe I should. But I
- 0:48look for something simple. Because I was a kid
- 0:51teacher. And I always looked for something simple.
- 0:54Some strong biblical truth. that I could simply
- 0:57tell the kids and they could take home with them.
- 1:01And then I looked at my Bible, and sometime in
- 1:05the 37 years that I had that Bible, I wrote at
- 1:09the top, what will the Lord require of me? Wow.
- 1:16As we discussed, as the pastor said, you would
- 1:19be better to write in there, what would the Lord
- 1:21command me to do? And we had a discussion, and
- 1:25he won. And I realized he was right. If it was
- 1:30just a requirement, it doesn't mean I'd have
- 1:34to do it. You're required to finish so many classes
- 1:37in school, and sometimes you get a slide and
- 1:39they let you by. But if it's a command, you have
- 1:42to do it. You have no choice. This is what God
- 1:45asks you to do, and you have to do it, whether
- 1:47you like it or not. Whether you look foolish
- 1:50or not, you have to do it. This is what God said
- 1:52you should do. And if you want to be a child
- 1:54of his and follow him, you need to do it. And
- 1:57this is what Ezekiel did. A foolish thing. He
- 2:02was a man of God. Would he stoop to do something
- 2:05like this, what God asked him to do? Yes, he
- 2:08would. And he did. A brief synopsis of what Ezekiel
- 2:13chapter 4 is. Ezekiel is now one of the captives
- 2:17of Babylon. And the people looked back to Jerusalem
- 2:20and said, there's still hope there. We're going
- 2:22to go back to Jerusalem, no problems. And God
- 2:25said, I'm going to take Jerusalem away from them.
- 2:27And the Chaldean army is going to come and take
- 2:30them. And they're going to be sieging the city.
- 2:32And the people are going to be having a famine
- 2:35and all sorts of horrible things. And in the
- 2:39end, they will know that I am God. They will
- 2:41know that they forsook me, as the scripture verse
- 2:43says. What does it say? Consider then and realize
- 2:48how evil and bitter it is because you forsook
- 2:52the Lord and have no awe of me and no respect
- 2:55for me, no reverence for me anymore, declares
- 2:57the Lord Almighty. And they have lost respect
- 2:59for God. And he was going to show them just who
- 3:02he was, what kind of God he was. For the second
- 3:05service, I had brought my little puppet along.
- 3:08I'm going to show the kids over there what actually
- 3:09he was asked to do. Again, this is a man of God
- 3:12that was asked to do something by God which looked
- 3:15so ridiculous and so foolish. And yet he did
- 3:17it. He was asked to portray the siege of Jerusalem.
- 3:22For 390 days, he was to lay on his side. And
- 3:26then he was to turn the other direction, north
- 3:28and then south, for Judah. And 40 days lay on
- 3:31his side, bearing the sin of Judah. If you want
- 3:34to know the whole scope of the thing, you can
- 3:36look up Matthew Henry's commentary. It's about
- 3:39four pages of print that's that small. Or you
- 3:42can try to get it online. It's a little bit easier
- 3:44to read there. He was asked to take a clay tablet,
- 3:48picture on there Jerusalem. He was supposed to
- 3:51set that there. He was then supposed to make
- 3:54batting ramps going around it to show that the
- 3:56city was going to be under siege. He was supposed
- 3:58to put an iron pot there to show that God's iron
- 4:02hand was going to be upon them. He was then supposed
- 4:05to take so much food, a portion of lentils and
- 4:08wheat, and he was supposed to ration his food
- 4:10every day. He was also to take like a quart of
- 4:13water. and drink that at appointed times. That
- 4:16was to show the people there would be a famine
- 4:18coming. God laid out the entire thing to show
- 4:23the people what was going to happen. But I looked
- 4:27at that. This is a man of God who speaks for
- 4:30God and says, thus the sovereign Lord says this.
- 4:34And now he's supposed to do something like this?
- 4:37Is this the same man that spoke so powerful for
- 4:40God? Yes. Because God commanded him to do this.
- 4:45And there was no questions asked. He did it.
- 4:48Because that's what God asked him to do. And
- 4:53that's when I asked myself, what would God ask
- 4:56me to do? And when I say, that's too foolish.
- 5:01I can't do that, God. I can't do that before
- 5:03the congregation, make a fool of myself. What
- 5:07did God do for you? He left the glory of heaven.
- 5:11with angels declaring his glory and praise 24
- 5:14hours a day, saying, Holy, holy, holy is the
- 5:18Lord God Almighty. And he came down here to this
- 5:23forsaken place and died for his enemies, people
- 5:29that didn't even care about him. That was pretty
- 5:33foolish, wasn't it? But not in God's eyes. So
- 5:38if he asked me to do something foolish for him,
- 5:40is it really foolish? Is it really foolish? I've
- 5:45done some crazy things at junior church. Some
- 5:49crazy things. I think Sue thought I was crazy
- 5:52most of the time. The one time I said, how can
- 5:57I explain to them about the people breaking through
- 6:02the roof and lowering that man on the mat? Well,
- 6:06he came up with an answer. Because in my mind,
- 6:10I was thinking, I remember when I heard this
- 6:11story. How can they break through a slate roof
- 6:14that's like this and lower some guy down? Every
- 6:17roof and slate in him was slate with a high pitch.
- 6:20How are these guys getting up in that roof and
- 6:22breaking through the slate? So I did something
- 6:25foolish. I made a little cardboard box of a building
- 6:29with the stairs going up the side like it was
- 6:32in Jerusalem and a flat roof. And straw on top.
- 6:36Most adults would have probably thought that
- 6:38was stupid and foolish. But the kids understand.
- 6:41They understood what that scripture meant. How
- 6:45those guys could take their sickened friend on
- 6:49a mat and go up on the roof and break through
- 6:52the roof and lower him down. Sometimes we do
- 6:55foolish things. But if that's what God asks us
- 6:58to do, do it. I said a year ago about me going
- 7:03to the nursing home and I was supposed to have
- 7:07a message for these old people, which I'm old
- 7:11now. They couldn't hear, they couldn't see. And
- 7:15I did the walls of Jericho falling down with
- 7:18tin plates and wooden spoons and we blew a gazoo.
- 7:25It was foolish because those people laughed.
- 7:29And they said, I got it. I got it. I think Todd
- 7:34was the one that came over there in Faith Hall
- 7:36and straightened me out. I did the same thing
- 7:38for the kids one day, trying to explain to them
- 7:41about believing in God when he asked you to do
- 7:43something. And we had cardboard boxes piled up.
- 7:48And some of them had a string attached to them.
- 7:50And we marched around and stomped our feet. And
- 7:54then the kazoos came. And then they shouted.
- 7:58And I think the shots would have got him upstairs
- 8:00in Faith Hall because Todd came down and said,
- 8:02what is going on down here? And I said, the walls
- 8:06of Jericho just fell down. It's all over. No
- 8:09biggie. But see, the kids could see. It was foolish.
- 8:13Yes, it was foolish. But I'm a fool for Christ.
- 8:16And the kids could see that this man who is a
- 8:19military genius believed God's plan was better
- 8:24than his plan of attack. And the people probably
- 8:28thought it was foolish as they marched around.
- 8:30But when they shouted and the walls came down,
- 8:33it wasn't foolish, was it? What would happen
- 8:36if he hadn't obeyed God's command? But he did.
- 8:41Now, why, why, why would Ezekiel obey that what
- 8:51seemed like a foolish thing to do? That has to
- 8:53do with our other scripture. The people had no
- 8:58awe for him anymore. They had forgotten who God
- 9:02was, his magnitude, his grace, his power. They
- 9:08had forgotten all that. Ezekiel chapter 1. In
- 9:10the thirteenth year and the fourth month of the
- 9:12fifth day, when I was among the exiles in the
- 9:14Heber River, the heavens were opened, and I saw
- 9:17visions of God. And on the fifth month, it was
- 9:20the fifth year, and there goes all this business
- 9:23which I got lost in. I looked. And I saw a windstorm
- 9:27coming out of the north, an immense cloud with
- 9:29flashing lightning and surrounded by a brilliant
- 9:31light. The center of the fire looked like glowing
- 9:34metal, and in the fire was what looked like four
- 9:37living creatures. The appearance of their form
- 9:39was that of a man, but each had four faces and
- 9:42four wings. Their legs were straight, their feet
- 9:44were, and so on and so on. God gave him an awe
- 9:48moment where he saw the power of God and who
- 9:52God was. And that's why when God asked him to
- 9:56do something that seemed foolish, it wasn't foolish.
- 10:01This was God asking him to do this. Chapter 2,
- 10:06Ezekiel's call. He said to me, Son of man, stand
- 10:08up on your feet and I will speak to you. And
- 10:12as he spoke, the Spirit came on me and raised
- 10:14me to my feet and I heard him speaking to me.
- 10:16He said, Son of man. I am sending you to the
- 10:19Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled
- 10:21against me. They and their fathers have been
- 10:24in revolt against me to this very day. The people
- 10:27to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn.
- 10:29Say to them, this is what the sovereign Lord
- 10:31says. And whether they listen or fail to listen,
- 10:34for they are a rebellious house, they will know
- 10:38that a prophet has been among them. And you,
- 10:40son of man, do not be afraid of them or their
- 10:42words. Do not be afraid, though the briars and
- 10:45thorns are all around you. and live among you.
- 10:48Do not be afraid, or what they will do to you,
- 10:50I will be with you. That's why we can do what
- 10:56the world thinks is foolish, because God doesn't
- 11:01think it's foolish. And this is what I command
- 11:03you to do. And if you do it, you are doing the
- 11:08commands of God, and he will be with you, and
- 11:10he will protect you, and he will keep you. We
- 11:13today have lost the awe of God. I have lost the
- 11:18awe of God many times. When I run out of the
- 11:21house in the morning to do something, and I haven't
- 11:24prayed, and I haven't read my Bible, I've lost
- 11:29the awe of God. I haven't put him first before
- 11:33anything else in my life. Yes, I can say I'm
- 11:36busy, I have to do this, but I've lost that awe
- 11:41of him, that he is the first thing in the morning
- 11:44that I should think of. Nothing else. So are
- 11:48we all guilty of it? Yes, we are. How do we get
- 11:52that awe back? Just by taking time to just sit.
- 11:57Get off our cell phones. The kids get off their
- 12:01tablets. And remember, there's more to life than
- 12:04that. It's God. He's the number one thing. When
- 12:11I met Sue 53 years ago and a half, Did I have
- 12:16an awe of her? She's a keeper. Why haven't I
- 12:23lost that awe of her in 53 years? Because constantly
- 12:29I remind myself, she is my wife. She is the one
- 12:33God's given to me. And that's what keeps us all
- 12:37going. Something special between us. If there's
- 12:41that something special between you and God, then
- 12:45you won't lose the awe of God. And when you do
- 12:49run out of the house and don't read or pray in
- 12:51the morning, you're going to feel it and say,
- 12:54I've lost it this morning. I'm sorry, Lord. I've
- 12:59lost that respect for you. You were waiting for
- 13:02me to come and talk to you. You were waiting
- 13:04for me to come and read your word and learn of
- 13:06you, and I missed it. And we ask for forgiveness,
- 13:10and he is a gracious God. and forgives us our
- 13:14sins and cleanses us from all unrighteousness
- 13:17and restores that awe of him that we have. And
- 13:21that's what it's all about. That's how some people
- 13:25can go through their entire life and calamity
- 13:28and problems and trials come their way and they're
- 13:30still a solid rock because they still remember
- 13:34who's in control of their life. God is. They're
- 13:36not. Okay? So that's our first person. I just
- 13:42picked another person. Well, I'll tell you what,
- 13:45I'm like teaching kids. I'm going to jump around.
- 13:48I just decided to jump back to page 7 or 8, whatever
- 13:52it is. A true story about somebody that did something
- 13:55totally ridiculous. And the family thought that
- 13:59she was having a nervous breakdown. Marty was
- 14:03her name. A seasoned missionary in Africa for
- 14:08probably 21, 27 years. We knew Marty. One day
- 14:14in her devotions, God said, I want you to leave
- 14:16the field and go back home. Now, if you picture
- 14:20this, she's a missionary in Africa for 21 years.
- 14:23She is content there. She has a vibrant ministry.
- 14:27And God one day says, I want you to go home.
- 14:30Leave the field and go home. And the next time
- 14:33she prayed, God said, leave the field and go
- 14:35home. Finally, she called her mission board because
- 14:39she felt so uneasy being in the field, which
- 14:42she hadn't felt that way in 28 years. She calls
- 14:48her mission board to give her temporary furlough.
- 14:50She comes home not knowing anything, still puzzled.
- 14:54Lord, what is going on? She goes to some mission
- 14:58meetings, tries to understand, tries to get to
- 15:01her supporting churches and lets them know, I
- 15:04don't know what's going on. And then comes Reverend
- 15:06Stringfield, a missionary in Africa for 28 years.
- 15:13He lost his wife in Africa. A simple blood clot.
- 15:18Took her to the hospital and she died. Four children.
- 15:25They were one of God's servants. Left in Africa
- 15:28with four kids. He started four churches, a trade
- 15:34school. He went through two coup attempts in
- 15:38Kenya. One time, he was simply hiding. They hid
- 15:45him in one of the churches in the bush because
- 15:48any white person was killed on the spot. Why
- 15:51would a man that goes through all this have to
- 15:53also lose his wife? Did he understand it? No.
- 15:57Oh, and then there's the end of cleansing, too,
- 15:59where they're killing other tribes. My aunt said,
- 16:04pray for Larry. There's a lot of people in Africa.
- 16:10They got two miles away from where he was, and
- 16:15they turned and went a different direction. Larry
- 16:18comes home. He stayed there for probably six
- 16:20months after his wife died. You've got to understand,
- 16:24you can't just leave. You have four churches
- 16:27you're serving. What do you do? You have to sell
- 16:31your furniture or give it to somebody else? You
- 16:34have to raise support to come home. Finally,
- 16:37the mission board said, come home. You've got
- 16:39to get out of there. You've got to come home.
- 16:41He came home. He went to mission meetings, tried
- 16:46to let his churches know what's going on. And
- 16:49then guess what? One mission meeting, as Larry
- 16:55walked through the door, Marty said to her, that's...
- 17:02I brought you home. That is your husband. You
- 17:07will marry him, and the both of you will go back
- 17:10to Africa and complete his work. Is God still
- 17:15alive today? Is God still an awesome God today?
- 17:20Larry had no ministry without Michelle, his wife.
- 17:23She did the prayer letters. She took care of
- 17:26the kids. She homeschooled. She did everything.
- 17:28He was the minister. They went out to the churches,
- 17:31went out in the bush. But he was lost, totally
- 17:35lost, and his ministry was worthless without
- 17:39his wife, who was his partner. And God said,
- 17:44I'm not done with you yet, Larry. You're going
- 17:47back to Africa. And Marty is going to be your
- 17:51wife and go with you. She gave up her ministry
- 17:54of 28 years, a successful ministry on her own.
- 18:00Why? Was it foolish? Not in her eyes. Because
- 18:04God said, this is what I want you to do. She
- 18:08had an awe for God that overseeded all her personal
- 18:11feelings, all her personal ambitions. That's
- 18:17recognizing who God is. When we met her, what
- 18:23a woman. What a godly woman. And they went back.
- 18:29And then the kicker, Larry, had a heart attack
- 18:33and died. And she's left with four kids that
- 18:37told her outright, you will never be our mother.
- 18:44But when Marty got cancer and she was dying,
- 18:48the kids called us and said, pray for our mom,
- 18:52our mom, not our stepmom. He said, pray for our
- 18:58mom because we know she's dying and we miss her
- 19:02so much already. What God did in that family.
- 19:08See, this is what people don't see outside there.
- 19:12They don't see the awe of God, how he orchestrates
- 19:16things, how he plans things, how he works things
- 19:18out. We should. I'm just fortunate because my
- 19:25aunt was a missionary, and we have all the stories
- 19:29that she used to tell us about missionaries and
- 19:31how they would see God move and act, and most
- 19:34people don't see that. They don't see what's
- 19:36happening out there, where God is moving and
- 19:39shaping and how he's leading people and directing
- 19:42people. That's a real -life case of how a woman
- 19:48said, God said this is what I should do, and
- 19:51I'm going to do it. Simple faith, just walking
- 19:55out, not knowing what was going to happen. I
- 20:00wasn't planning on going there, but that's where
- 20:02I went. It's just like teaching junior church.
- 20:05One kid would do something, and I'd just go in
- 20:07a whole different direction, and that's where
- 20:09I wound up. We're going to look at the last person
- 20:13here. This person had an awe for God, knew who
- 20:21God was. It's Job. He not only prayed for himself,
- 20:26but he just sacrificed for his kids constantly
- 20:28to make sure that they weren't going astray.
- 20:32And then Job has everything taken away from him.
- 20:37It doesn't say he complained, but he kind of
- 20:39sat and sulked a little bit, wondered what God
- 20:43was doing, what was happening in his life. And
- 20:46then again, we go back to this verse. How evil
- 20:49and bitter it is when we forsake the Lord, we
- 20:51turn away from him, we abandon him. And I think
- 20:54probably Job at this point of breaking had probably
- 20:59thought of abandoning God too. As his wife said,
- 21:04why don't you just curse God and die? Get it
- 21:07over with. Just curse God and die. He's left
- 21:10you. And then we come to Job chapter 38, 39,
- 21:1540, and 41. God gives Job another awe moment
- 21:20to put things back in proper perspective. In
- 21:24Job 38 .1, it says, Then the Lord answered Job
- 21:27out of a storm. In verse 2, Who is this that
- 21:31darkens my counsel with words without knowledge?
- 21:33Verse 3, Brace yourself like a man, and I'm about
- 21:38to question you. I think if God said that to
- 21:42me, brace yourself like a man, I'm going to start
- 21:43questioning you. I think I'd get attention. And
- 21:47then God has four whole chapters where he tells
- 21:55Job just who I am. And Job has an awe moment.
- 22:03Job 38 .11, concerning the sea, I said, this
- 22:06far will you come, and you shall come no further.
- 22:09Here it is where your prodness halts. Job 38
- 22:12.12, have you ever given orders to the morning?
- 22:16Job 38 .22, have you entered the storehouse of
- 22:19the snow? Job 38 .14, were you there when I laid
- 22:23the foundations of the earth? Job 38 .35, do
- 22:27you send lightning bolts on their way? Job 39
- 22:30.27, does the eagle soar at your command? Job
- 22:3449, do you have an arm like God's? And can you
- 22:39make thunder like him? The awe of God. Hits Job
- 22:46again. Chapter 42, Job replies to the Lord. Surely
- 22:52I spoke of things I did not understand, things
- 22:55too wonderful for me. And in verse 5, my ears
- 23:00had heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you.
- 23:05That's his moment. I really know now who you
- 23:10are. And whatever you ask me to do, I will do.
- 23:13Whatever I go through for you, I will go through
- 23:15for you. Because you are God, and there is none
- 23:19like you. See, that's the difference. Is he real
- 23:24to us, or is he just real once in a while? He
- 23:28wants to be real all the time, not just once
- 23:31in a while. Fear God and keep his commandments.
- 23:36One of my most favorite verses, Romans 1, 12,
- 23:381 and 2. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in
- 23:42the view of God's mercy, that you offer your
- 23:44body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing
- 23:47to God, which is your reasonable service. That's
- 23:50our duty. What is the duty of man? To serve God,
- 23:53to please him, to glorify him. It's not about
- 23:56us. It's about him. About one day him saying
- 24:01to us, well done, my good and faithful servant.
- 24:04Enter into eternal joy. And any foolishness,
- 24:09and any craziness, and any people, verbal abuse,
- 24:13or physical abuse, whatever we take, for the
- 24:16name of Jesus, will be like a snap, a fleeting
- 24:21moment, when we see Jesus and bask in his presence.
- 24:26I just want to conclude with five points here.
- 24:29The pastor always says you need three points.
- 24:31I got five, so I guess I'm doing good. What does
- 24:37God expect of me? Number one is devotion. Daniel
- 24:433, verses 16 to 18. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
- 24:48replied to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar. They addressed
- 24:51him as king. We do not need to defend ourselves
- 24:54before you in this matter. If we are thrown in
- 24:57the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able
- 25:00to save us from it, and he will rescue us from
- 25:02your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we
- 25:06want you to know, O king, We will not serve you
- 25:09or your gods or the image you have set up. We
- 25:14worship the God and God alone. He expects devotion
- 25:18from us. Total devotion, even to the point of
- 25:23death. And there are many Christians today, which
- 25:27we don't hear about, that are facing death each
- 25:30and every day because of their devotion to Jesus
- 25:32Christ. And they don't care what will happen
- 25:35to them. They're being martyred. because of their
- 25:38faith in Jesus, because maybe the underground
- 25:41church is raided, or because someone finds a
- 25:44scripture verse hidden somewhere in their house
- 25:47and they are murdered because of it. Devotion
- 25:50to Jesus, regardless of the circumstances. The
- 25:54second thing he wants from us is consistency.
- 25:58Daniel 6, 10 -11. Now when Daniel learned that
- 26:01the decree had been published, he went home to
- 26:04his upstairs room where the windows opened toward
- 26:06Jerusalem, and three times a day he got down
- 26:09on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to God,
- 26:11just as he had always done before. Consistency.
- 26:18I don't care what laws are going to be made that
- 26:20I can't pray, I'm going to pray, because that's
- 26:23what I do. My God's expecting me to come to that
- 26:26window and pray three times a day, and I will
- 26:28do it. Consistency of worship, consistency of
- 26:32praise to God, consistency in our devotions.
- 26:35That's why I get upset when I run out of the
- 26:39house and say I'm too busy to read this morning.
- 26:43I'm not consistently in the Word. And then a
- 26:49third point. He wants us to be a friend of the
- 26:51bridegroom. I'm going to jump over to John 3.
- 26:54I like that one better. It says, To this John
- 26:57replied, A man can only receive what is given
- 27:00him from heaven. You yourselves can test for
- 27:03that. I said, I am not the Christ, but I am sent
- 27:06ahead of him. The bride belongs to the bridegroom.
- 27:08The friend who attends to the bridegroom waits
- 27:10and listens for him and is full of glory, or
- 27:14full of joy, excuse me. When he hears the bridegroom's
- 27:17voice, that's the intimacy. The joy is mine and
- 27:21is not complete. He must become greater and I
- 27:24must become less. Jesus wants us to be a friend
- 27:28of the bridegroom, a friend that never ever seeks
- 27:32glory for himself, but points everything to God.
- 27:36Everything should be pointed to the master and
- 27:39not to us. Whatever we do for him, it should
- 27:42not be about us. It should be about him. And
- 27:47lastly, two more. The greatest commandment, Mark
- 27:5112, 28. One of the teachers of the law came and
- 27:55heard them debating, noticing that Jesus had
- 27:57given them a good answer. He asked him, of all
- 28:00the commandments, which is the most important?
- 28:02The most important one, answered Jesus, is, Hear,
- 28:05O Israel, the Lord our God is one. Love the Lord
- 28:09your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
- 28:12with all your mind, and with all your strength.
- 28:15The second is this, love your neighbor as yourself.
- 28:18There is no greater commandment than these. It's
- 28:22a pretty complete list. What God requires of
- 28:25us is our heart, our soul, our mind, our strength,
- 28:29our life. It's not for the faint at heart. It's
- 28:36for those that truly are disciples that want
- 28:39to be in it for the end game and want to be right
- 28:44there on the firing line at the end to hear that
- 28:48word, well done. I'm not my own. I've been bought
- 28:51with a price. We keep forgetting that. We think
- 28:55it's all about us. It's not about us. It's about
- 28:57him, what he's done for us, and what one day
- 29:01he will reveal to us. And lastly, the fifth thing
- 29:05that I think is required of us is an intimate
- 29:07walk with him daily. Micah 6, the Lord's case
- 29:12against Israel. He showed you, O man, what is
- 29:16good, and what does the Lord require of you?
- 29:20To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly
- 29:24with your God. An intimate walk with him daily.
- 29:28Remember, he said, I know my sheep and my sheep
- 29:31know me. When I talk to them, they know it's
- 29:34me. And they will answer me. It's not a prideful
- 29:42that, yeah, God talks to me. It's a humbling
- 29:46experience when I ask him. What do you want me
- 29:51to talk about? I don't have anything to say.
- 29:53And then week by week, he gives me something.
- 29:56And I wake up in the middle of the night and
- 29:58there's something else. And then there's something
- 30:00else. And then I got eight pages. I don't know
- 30:05where the eight pages came from, except it came
- 30:07from him talking to me in here somewhere. It's
- 30:12a humbling, humbling experience when he does
- 30:15that. It's not a prideful thing. It's not a haughty
- 30:18thing. It's humbling. I mentioned my aunt was
- 30:21a missionary in Toledo, Iowa, and she and her
- 30:24partner, Geneva DeBoard, ran Grace Gospel Mission.
- 30:28And they had a banquet one time, and they were
- 30:30trying to raise more support for the mission.
- 30:32It was a mission for disadvantaged kids. They
- 30:34had close to 100 kids. And she asked the one
- 30:38person who was on the board, would you come and
- 30:41speak that night at the mission? She said this
- 30:44man was a humble man, not proud. would do anything
- 30:48for the mission. If they had a problem with the
- 30:50furnace, he was a businessman. He would come,
- 30:52take off his suit, and work on the furnace and
- 30:54everything. And when she asked him this, would
- 30:59you come and speak at the banquet for us? He
- 31:03simply looked at her and said. He didn't say,
- 31:05well, I'm going to pray about it, Ellen, and
- 31:08see what the Lord would want me to do, and then
- 31:10I'll get back to you in a week or two, and we'll
- 31:12work it out. That would have been haughty, proud.
- 31:16Look at me. I'm a business person. I'm on the
- 31:18board here, and you're asking me to do this.
- 31:20He looked at her and said, I will talk to my
- 31:24father tonight, and I'll have an answer by tomorrow
- 31:27morning for you. That's the awe of God. That
- 31:33close. I will talk to my father tonight, and
- 31:38I'll have an answer for you tomorrow. You see,
- 31:41that's what we're missing today. It's not whether
- 31:44it's a contemporary service or a traditional
- 31:47service, whether it is a guitar or a band. It's
- 31:51not whether it's a big, beautiful building or
- 31:53you're meeting in a hut somewhere in Africa.
- 31:56It's God. It's about him, not about us or our
- 32:00circumstances. And when we catch a glimpse of
- 32:03that, that's what keeps us going. It's him, not
- 32:08me. It's God, not me. What Alan told us that.
- 32:12The hair just stood up in the back of my neck
- 32:16that this man was so humble and simply said,
- 32:20I'll talk to my father tonight. Like we would
- 32:24talk to my dad or my mom. It was that much of
- 32:28a relationship. We fall so short. I fall so short.
- 32:32I was reminded that about 3 in the morning that
- 32:35I have to tell you that. Because I forgot how
- 32:40much of an impact that had made on my life when
- 32:43this man was so humble and yet was so close to
- 32:46God. The closer we get to God, the more humble
- 32:49we get. What, I will bring the prod down and
- 32:53I will elevate the simple? That's what he says.
- 32:58I will make the foolish things wise and the wise
- 33:01foolish. We serve a great God. We forget that.
- 33:06We get so involved with our own lives, our own
- 33:10problems, and he understands. He understands
- 33:15we get a bad medical report, and it's going to
- 33:17weigh on us. We lose our job, it's going to weigh
- 33:21on us. He understands all that, but he understands
- 33:24that we're his, and he wants us to be obedient
- 33:31to him and to love him. That's what he asked
- 33:35of us. It's not really a big thing. I mess up
- 33:41a lot. Have I always kept the commandments? No
- 33:44way. Ask the pastor. He'll be glad to share with
- 33:47you. It'll be all worthwhile one day when we
- 33:55stand before him. We have no idea what it will
- 34:00be like. If he had told us what heaven was like
- 34:03to be with him, we'd be so homesick. We'd want
- 34:09to leave tomorrow or this afternoon. And that's
- 34:13what we forget. Do you imagine heaven? Let's
- 34:22remember to keep that all alive in us. That every
- 34:28time we think of Jesus, we smile. Every time
- 34:32we think of what he's done for us, we praise
- 34:34him. And even when the bad things come, we thank
- 34:38him that he's still there with us right by our
- 34:40side. And that's what helps us get through it.
- 34:45We need to get the awe of God back in churches
- 34:47in America. They're too busy just making people
- 34:51feel good and going home and, oh yeah, I put
- 34:55my time in. I worship God for an hour. Now it's
- 35:00my time. We have to really remind ourselves that
- 35:03every day is God's time. He's waiting for you
- 35:08to talk to him. He's waiting for you to sup with
- 35:11him, commune with him, and to show him to a world
- 35:15that is dying. We might be the only Bible that
- 35:18people see in our actions and our deeds around
- 35:21people. When I worked at the one nursery, they'd
- 35:25say, Oh, sorry, Lanny. Sorry we swore. I said,
- 35:30you're not offending me, you're offending my
- 35:31God. And they said, ooh. Yeah, that's more serious
- 35:37than offending me. Now I put it in a thought,
- 35:40the fact that they're disgracing or offending
- 35:45a God, their God, who wants to be their God.
- 35:53That's all I have. That's all he's given me.
- 35:56I can't add anything because if I add anything,
- 35:58it would be my words, not his words. And the
- 36:04prophets never, ever added anything because they
- 36:09knew if it wasn't 100 % prophecy, they'd be stoned
- 36:12to death. So help us as we converse with people,
- 36:20meet people, present Christ truly as he should
- 36:23be, guard ourselves. that we don't fly off the
- 36:26handle, say something we shouldn't say, act in
- 36:29a way we shouldn't act. That's what he commands
- 36:33us to do. If you want to really look at the commands,
- 36:36Romans chapter 12, 13, 14, and 15 is filled with
- 36:43hundreds of commands. I've been reading my Bible
- 36:47for years, and I just read over them. I looked
- 36:49at one of the commentaries, and it said, look
- 36:52up the commands of God. the four chapters, wow,
- 36:56there's a lot there. It's one after another.
- 36:59Do this, do this, do this, do this. So we have
- 37:03a long way to go yet to learn about God and what
- 37:05he wants from us. But he understands, and he'll
- 37:09help us each and every day doing more and more
- 37:12like him as we journey with him. Let's pray.
- 37:18Father, again, we thank you so much for your
- 37:21word. That is what we have as prophets. You have
- 37:26spoken, and you have commanded many things. And
- 37:30forgive us, Father. We do get so busy, so concerned
- 37:36with things in our everyday lives, and you understand
- 37:38that. We worry about inflation. We worry about
- 37:41wars. We worry about sickness. We worry about
- 37:44catastrophes coming. But help us to remember
- 37:47who we serve. What shall separate us from the
- 37:53love of God? Nothing. No principalities, no demons,
- 37:56no hardships, no sorrows, no trials. Nothing
- 38:00will separate me from the love of God. We thank
- 38:03you for that today. We thank you for reminding
- 38:06me of how I need to rekindle that awe of you,
- 38:11that respect of you, that honor of you, that
- 38:14appreciation of you, and all that you did for
- 38:17me on the cross at Calvary. Thank you and praise
- 38:21you. I pray and hope, Father, that you were lifted
- 38:25up and glorified today and that we take something
- 38:28home with us that we can use and cherish for
- 38:30the weeks ahead. And I thank you for that in
- 38:33Christ's name. Amen.
