- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome back to another episode of Bucco Territory, presented to
- 0:13Speaker 2: you by the Foul Territory Network.
- 0:14Speaker 1: My name is Noah Hiles.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Joining me on today's show is my wonderful co host,
- 0:19Speaker 2: Platinum Key aka Mark Mark. As you can probably see,
- 0:24Speaker 2: I'm here in a very nice fans lounge in City
- 0:30Speaker 2: Field at seven thirty pm. The Pirates fell on opening
- 0:35Speaker 2: day to the New York Mets eleven to seven.
- 0:39Speaker 1: We're gonna get right into it.
- 0:40Speaker 2: First thing to start off with, Mark, if you and
- 0:43Speaker 2: I tweeted this, if you would have given me one
- 0:45Speaker 2: hundred guesses on something crazy that could have happened in
- 0:49Speaker 2: today's game, I would have never guessed that Paul Skemes
- 0:52Speaker 2: was pulled in the bottom of the first inning and
- 0:57Speaker 2: nothing injury related went into that decision. He was just
- 1:02Speaker 2: he was yanked and it was the right decision. I
- 1:05Speaker 2: have my thoughts on it, but real quick, I just
- 1:07Speaker 2: got to know what you're thinking when that happens.
- 1:10Speaker 3: I mean I just responded to your tweet when you
- 1:13Speaker 3: mentioned that he was being pulled. I just said what
- 1:16Speaker 3: I mean that was My reaction was what because we've
- 1:19Speaker 3: never seen this with Paul Skeins. Yeah, and so it
- 1:24Speaker 3: was just unbelievable. I Mean, if you would have told
- 1:27Speaker 3: me he wasn't going to finish the first scene, I'd
- 1:28Speaker 3: be like, all right, you're crazy, that's funny, cool joke. Yeah,
- 1:33Speaker 3: that's never going to happen. But it did. And yeah,
- 1:37Speaker 3: it's just it sucks, especially game one on the national
- 1:40Speaker 3: stage on national TV, when it's the only game going on.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think in the moment.
- 1:49Speaker 2: It felt like a bigger indictment on Schemes than in
- 1:52Speaker 2: what it really was. I mean, when you go back
- 1:55Speaker 2: and kind of rewind it, like you, Schemes was not
- 1:58Speaker 2: good today by any means for his standards. Especially the
- 2:02Speaker 2: control wasn't there with the fastball. The command, I should say,
- 2:05Speaker 2: wasn't there with the fastball. He was falling behind in counts.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And when you open your season against a team like
- 2:10Speaker 2: the Miami Marlins like they did last year, you can
- 2:13Speaker 2: get away with that rust.
- 2:15Speaker 1: This Mets lineup is not.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Going to play that though, Like three of the first
- 2:19Speaker 2: five at bats of their game, when at least five pitches.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Long right, and.
- 2:24Speaker 2: They're gonna grind it out. They're going to force you
- 2:26Speaker 2: to go into the zone and make a pitch that
- 2:28Speaker 2: you don't want to make.
- 2:31Speaker 1: But I think my big takeaway.
- 2:33Speaker 2: From this skiing start is that you can't put guys
- 2:38Speaker 2: on base with this defense because it's going to earn you.
- 2:42Speaker 2: And I mean, you don't want to overreact, and we're
- 2:45Speaker 2: gonna get into the defensive woes later into this show.
- 2:49Speaker 2: But the reality was it is if Oneal Cruz plays
- 2:55Speaker 2: a better defensive game in the first inning, Paul Skins
- 2:59Speaker 2: probably goes two, three, four.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Who knows.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Yeah, the first scene ends to two. Yeah, and it's
- 3:07Speaker 3: a more game. Yeah yeah.
- 3:08Speaker 2: How many times mark do we see Paul Skins throw
- 3:11Speaker 2: a twenty five thirty pitch first inning only to come
- 3:15Speaker 2: back out and find a rhythm in you know, end
- 3:18Speaker 2: up going six innings with one hundred pitches.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I mean every single time he comes out. Yeah, you're
- 3:24Speaker 3: just I was just waiting for that double play ball
- 3:26Speaker 3: where it's just like, oh he got out of it
- 3:27Speaker 3: in one pitch, all right, he got out of another jam.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Classic Paul Skins, like nothing to even sweat over. I
- 3:34Speaker 3: wasn't nervous when the bases were loaded and I saw
- 3:37Speaker 3: the fly ball, I was like, all right, tie game,
- 3:39Speaker 3: that's fine, and then O'Neill cruise has completely misplayed the
- 3:42Speaker 3: ball and it's that's all of a sudden four runs.
- 3:45Speaker 3: The next very next batter, he gives up another error
- 3:48Speaker 3: I guess, not an error, but makes what amounts to
- 3:52Speaker 3: an error just completely losing that ball in the sun.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And yeah, it's that was tough, But I agree with
- 3:58Speaker 3: you at least that that was the right decision by
- 4:00Speaker 3: Don Kelly to pull him there. I think he was
- 4:04Speaker 3: up to like thirty nine pitches first.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Thirty eight, and so he had lind Door coming up.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, and you're just that's just asking for injury and
- 4:13Speaker 3: doing that the first game of the season. You just
- 4:15Speaker 3: can't have that with your a's. So accept the loss
- 4:19Speaker 3: and move on. And I, like Paul Skeen said, you
- 4:22Speaker 3: just gotta flush it.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Yeah, one final thing before we move on here.
- 4:27Speaker 2: I've covered a lot of sporting events in my life,
- 4:30Speaker 2: covered a lot of baseball games. I wouldn't say big
- 4:32Speaker 2: baseball games because I covered the Pirates. Unfortunately, not unfortunately
- 4:36Speaker 2: that I cover the Pirates, but it's unfortunate that they
- 4:38Speaker 2: have not played in a lot of big games during
- 4:39Speaker 2: my time covering them. The crowd pop at City field
- 4:45Speaker 2: when Paul Skeens was yanked was incredible. It was equivalent
- 4:51Speaker 2: to a walk off home run in the bottom of
- 4:54Speaker 2: the ninth inning cage. It's because forty four plus thousand
- 4:58Speaker 2: people showed up today and not one of them expected
- 5:02Speaker 2: to see that.
- 5:03Speaker 3: No, not even the most optimistic Mets fan.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Now, no, no chance, did anyone ever think that the
- 5:09Speaker 2: Mets would yank Schemes two thirds of the way through
- 5:15Speaker 2: the understanding. So that's something that I'll never forget. You know,
- 5:21Speaker 2: I think Schemes is going to be just fine. I
- 5:23Speaker 2: really don't envy the Cincinnati Reds because they're going to
- 5:28Speaker 2: feel his wrath the next time he takes the mount
- 5:31Speaker 2: And that's all there is to say on him. We're
- 5:32Speaker 2: going to get into the defense of woes next, but
- 5:35Speaker 2: first an ad break for our sponsors.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Hey, have you hit the age where everything feels a
- 5:41Speaker 4: little bit more difficult the Jim, Yes, but everything like
- 5:45Speaker 4: energy crashes in the afternoon.
- 5:49Speaker 5: You know, you might have been reading about low t
- 5:52Speaker 5: and you see your doctor about it and they want
- 5:54Speaker 5: to give you basically shots every week for the rest
- 5:57Speaker 5: of your life. Oh cool, that sounds fun. And then
- 6:00Speaker 5: you dig deeper and you realize what you're signing up for,
- 6:02Speaker 5: and it's three grand a year to shut down to
- 6:04Speaker 5: your body's natural production forever. That is brutal.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Mars Men gives you the same benefits of optimized testosterone energy, strength,
- 6:12Speaker 4: focus without shutting your body down. No synthetics, no needles,

- 6:35Speaker 5: ask you where you heard about them. Please support our
- 6:37Speaker 5: show and tell them we sent.
- 6:39Speaker 2: You all right, Mark, So we talked about schemes, but
- 6:43Speaker 2: the defense is the bigger story here because again he
- 6:45Speaker 2: wasn't great, but if.
- 6:48Speaker 3: You get yeah, he would have.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Been quality defense. We could have figured it out, like
- 6:55Speaker 1: I mean, he could have.
- 6:56Speaker 2: He could have went through the order the second time
- 6:59Speaker 2: and struggled and it could have been just a bad day.
- 7:02Speaker 1: On the mount. But O'Neil Cruz didn't give him that opportunity.
- 7:06Speaker 2: And we talked about this probably like a month ago,
- 7:09Speaker 2: about how does he deserve the benefit of the doubt,
- 7:12Speaker 2: And we're getting to a point where it's just not
- 7:14Speaker 2: acceptable anymore.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I mean you can point out, like I.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Know, there was discourse over sunglasses if he should wear
- 7:20Speaker 2: them or not. I'm a firm believer that everyone should
- 7:23Speaker 2: wear sunglasses when the sun's out.
- 7:24Speaker 1: You gotta it makes sense.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Yeah, But if you don't feel comfortable playing baseball and sunglasses,
- 7:31Speaker 2: that's fine. I don't care because guess what people played
- 7:35Speaker 2: outfield in the major leagues before sunglasses were like a
- 7:39Speaker 2: regular thing in American society, and all the games back
- 7:44Speaker 2: then were played when.
- 7:45Speaker 1: The sun was out.
- 7:46Speaker 2: They figured out how to catch a baseball in the sun.
- 7:49Speaker 2: O'Neil Cruz has to do that, and the first ball
- 7:53Speaker 2: had nothing to do with the sun, something that he
- 7:55Speaker 2: himself even admitted after the game.
- 7:58Speaker 1: He just got a bad read on it.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Yeah, completely misjudging can't happen.
- 8:02Speaker 1: No, that just cannot happen.
- 8:04Speaker 2: And I don't know where you put this guy, mark,
- 8:06Speaker 2: because you can't put him on a corner outfield because
- 8:09Speaker 2: every single issue that faced O'Neil Cruz today could have
- 8:14Speaker 2: happened in the corner outfield. You put someone in the
- 8:15Speaker 2: corner outfield when range is a problem. He's athletic and
- 8:19Speaker 2: fast enough to get any ball, it's just he doesn't
- 8:23Speaker 2: know how to get there or he doesn't know what
- 8:26Speaker 2: to do when the ball comes his way in right.
- 8:28Speaker 3: No amount of athleticism is going to make up for
- 8:31Speaker 3: that bad of a misread on a ball. Yeah, And
- 8:34Speaker 3: it's not like moving the left or right is going
- 8:35Speaker 3: to fix that kind of mysread or a lot of
- 8:38Speaker 3: the mistakes that we're seeing, and yeah, it's what do
- 8:41Speaker 3: you do with him? And it's not like you can
- 8:44Speaker 3: throw him at DH because you got a Zuna there now.
- 8:49Speaker 3: And it's just so frustrating because the ceiling on O
- 8:53Speaker 3: new Cruise, I mean, the talent, the tools, like the
- 8:56Speaker 3: raw talent is there, Like there's not anyone that can
- 9:00Speaker 3: hit the ball harder. There's not anyone that can throw
- 9:01Speaker 3: a ball harder.
- 9:03Speaker 1: He's fast, like anyone that can run faster.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and everything is just right there in front of
- 9:08Speaker 3: him and you just can't put it together. And it's
- 9:11Speaker 3: so infuriating. And I mean the timing of the those
- 9:15Speaker 3: mistakes today where it's the first inning of the first
- 9:19Speaker 3: game on opening Day, and you have Jeff Passing tweeting
- 9:23Speaker 3: about it. I mean, you have Joelle and b tweeting
- 9:25Speaker 3: about it, and I mean it like what yeah right, Yeah,
- 9:30Speaker 3: didn't expect that one either.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I had to include that one in my column. Yeah.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Good good. But yeah, so it's just like the timings
- 9:38Speaker 3: so unfortunate, just the mistakes with Paul Skeen's getting him
- 9:42Speaker 3: knocked out. If that could have been in the fifth inning,
- 9:44Speaker 3: where like someone a reliever had already been in completely
- 9:47Speaker 3: different story maybe, But yeah, it's just oh what, what
- 9:51Speaker 3: a frustrating afternoon.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, to conclude this portion of the show,
- 9:57Speaker 2: I just want to say this. It was Cruise today,
- 9:59Speaker 2: but it it It's going to be someone else. Yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 2: I mean Nick Gonzalez missed a tag. I mean there
- 10:06Speaker 2: were plenty of other examples where it didn't go wrong
- 10:10Speaker 2: or it didn't go right, excuse me. And that's again,
- 10:14Speaker 2: that was the whole premise of my column was last year,
- 10:18Speaker 2: Paul Skeins had to be perfect because he knew he
- 10:21Speaker 2: couldn't allow more than one or two runs because his
- 10:24Speaker 2: team couldn't score runs. This year, he has to be perfect,
- 10:27Speaker 2: because he knows if he puts runners on base, even
- 10:30Speaker 2: if he gets soft contact, or if he gets a
- 10:33Speaker 2: player to hit a ball directly at his teammates. It's
- 10:37Speaker 2: not a guarantee that a play is going to be
- 10:38Speaker 2: made this year because half of this roster is playing.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Half of this lineup, I should say, is playing out
- 10:44Speaker 2: of position. Cruz clearly is not comfortable in center field.
- 10:48Speaker 2: O'Hearn is a brand new right fielder. Essentially, Reynolds is
- 10:52Speaker 2: a failed left fielder that they moved back to left field.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Nick Gonzalez made his second career start at third base
- 10:58Speaker 2: this afternoon. Is a goal glove utility man, but shortstops
- 11:02Speaker 2: probably the worst of all four infield positions that you
- 11:05Speaker 2: can play.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Lao is a very low graded defender.
- 11:09Speaker 2: At second base, and Spencer Horwitz is just an average
- 11:12Speaker 2: first baseman as far as defense is concerned. So you
- 11:15Speaker 2: don't have defense that's going to be able. I mean,
- 11:19Speaker 2: they should be able to make routine plays, they should
- 11:23Speaker 2: be able to turn a double play if they are
- 11:25Speaker 2: the bases loaded, but this is not the team where
- 11:29Speaker 2: you can bank on that stuff. So when you put
- 11:32Speaker 2: ten guys on base today for free, nine walks and
- 11:35Speaker 2: then the hit batter by skiings. They're gonna come around
- 11:38Speaker 2: to score unless if you strike them out or get
- 11:42Speaker 2: a very routine play, These runs are gonna come home
- 11:45Speaker 2: to score. And they lost. Five of those ten free
- 11:48Speaker 2: runners came around to score today. Mark they only lost
- 11:51Speaker 2: by four runs. So that's the story of the game.
- 11:54Speaker 2: The pitchers couldn't find the zone. The defense did not
- 11:58Speaker 2: help their cause at all. And if that formula continues,
- 12:02Speaker 2: this team's gonna have a problem because unlike last year
- 12:05Speaker 2: where the defense did bail them out time and time again,
- 12:09Speaker 2: that's just not how this team is built.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Nope, it might.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Change if you move some pieces around, if you find
- 12:14Speaker 2: a way to get Jake Mangum on the field in
- 12:16Speaker 2: the outfield, and if you get Connor Griffin up here,
- 12:19Speaker 2: the defense is already a lot better.
- 12:22Speaker 1: But if this is the lineup, they're gonna try it out.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And it makes sense for this to be the lineup
- 12:26Speaker 2: because clearly they're just trying to score runs. There are
- 12:29Speaker 2: too many guys playing out of position for you to
- 12:33Speaker 2: be putting guys on base because you just cannot trust
- 12:36Speaker 2: your defense right now.
- 12:37Speaker 1: It just is what it is.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it's that the slide the three sliders meme where
- 12:41Speaker 3: it's pitching, defense, hitting and you click one and the
- 12:46Speaker 3: other one goes off. It's like, right, all right, we
- 12:47Speaker 3: turned on hitting while defense went off, and we still
- 12:50Speaker 3: have pitching and hitting, but now no defense, which is
- 12:54Speaker 3: just it's gotta be frustrating for skins.
- 12:57Speaker 2: So yes, so we're gonna talk about some of the
- 13:00Speaker 2: positives from today when we get back.
- 13:02Speaker 1: But one more break from our sponsors.
- 13:04Speaker 5: In the meantime, AJ baseball season is finally here, and
- 13:08Speaker 5: there's nothing like listening to the sweet sounds of the

- 14:07Speaker 2: All right, Mark, We're gonna round this off on a
- 14:09Speaker 2: high note because the Pirates did score seven runs today.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Brandon Lao and Ryan O'Hearn had tremendous Pirates debut or debuts.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Lal Homer on his first two at bats, I don't
- 14:19Speaker 2: know how in the world that.
- 14:21Speaker 3: First home I have no idea.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yeah, no one even reacted like in crowd. It wasn't
- 14:27Speaker 2: like a, oh, we're quiet because we're depressed and we're
- 14:30Speaker 2: the home teams of action.
- 14:31Speaker 1: It was everyone was like wait that wait, yeah, that
- 14:34Speaker 1: was a home run.
- 14:35Speaker 3: No. I mean I saw all like the press guys
- 14:37Speaker 3: tweeted out before I saw it on my broadcast. Yeah,
- 14:41Speaker 3: and I was thinking, I was like that, I saw
- 14:43Speaker 3: the hit and I was like, oh, I must be
- 14:45Speaker 3: further behind than I think, because that is not a
- 14:47Speaker 3: home run, Like, there's no way that goes out, and
- 14:50Speaker 3: it did.
- 14:50Speaker 1: So did forty.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Seven degree launch angle or something ridiculous?
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I believe the only other Pirate to hit a
- 14:57Speaker 2: home run with that launch angle like in the cast history,
- 15:00Speaker 2: I believe. Yeah, so elite company for second basement. Ryan
- 15:05Speaker 2: O'Hearn had a no doubter and and LW's second one
- 15:09Speaker 2: was crushed. Nick can Zalez had a couple of hits today,
- 15:12Speaker 2: Henry Davis with an RBI double shocker.
- 15:14Speaker 1: It went down the third baseline.
- 15:17Speaker 2: But overall, Mark, I mean, the offense performed well. And
- 15:21Speaker 2: something that was worth noting is Johann Ramirez came in
- 15:25Speaker 2: for Paul Skins and relief, and he gave two and
- 15:28Speaker 2: a third scoreless innings of relief. Entering the bottom of
- 15:32Speaker 2: the fourth inning. It was a six to four ball game.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Like the Pirates. Freddy Perrault is one of the best
- 15:38Speaker 2: pitchers in baseball. The Pirates made him look bad today.
- 15:42Speaker 2: I mean, he he got the job done ultimately, he
- 15:44Speaker 2: covered five innings, but they roughed him up pretty good,
- 15:47Speaker 2: I thought. And you saw a lot of good production
- 15:50Speaker 2: offensively from top to bottom. I know, I just listed
- 15:54Speaker 2: off a whole bunch of things. I want to get
- 15:56Speaker 2: your your thoughts on the lineup and also your thoughts
- 15:59Speaker 2: on the home run celebration.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I know you're dying to talk about it.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I know.
- 16:07Speaker 3: That's exactly what I want to talk about right now,
- 16:09Speaker 3: because I mean, what a just perfect like encapsulation of
- 16:13Speaker 3: Pittsburgh a welder's helmet. Uh yeah, I mean when they
- 16:16Speaker 3: broke it out, I literally just screamed, like, let's let's go.
- 16:19Speaker 3: This is it was perfect. As a fan, we needed this.
- 16:23Speaker 3: I missed like the cutlasts last year. They didn't really
- 16:26Speaker 3: have anything. It just felt I mean, you hit the
- 16:29Speaker 3: least amount of home runs in Major League Baseball, you're
- 16:31Speaker 3: not gonna probably celebrate too often. Yeah, but at the
- 16:35Speaker 3: same time, it's nice to see something come back, especially
- 16:38Speaker 3: with like the offensive pop, and especially against a picture
- 16:41Speaker 3: like ferrye Peralta, because we've seen him with the Brewers
- 16:44Speaker 3: in the past. This is, like you said, one of
- 16:46Speaker 3: the best pictures in the league. So it was encouraging
- 16:48Speaker 3: at least to see offensive production. You mentioned like Nick
- 16:52Speaker 3: Zales two for four with a double, an RBI or
- 16:55Speaker 3: a couple of RBIs. Henry Davis with a double so
- 17:00Speaker 3: we're at least getting some production. But yeah, I it
- 17:02Speaker 3: just doesn't really matter if you can't play defense.
- 17:06Speaker 2: No, it does not, So I guess we'll just leave
- 17:09Speaker 2: it at that mark. Any final thoughts before we wrap up.
