- 0:00Speaker 1: This is so exciting. 106.7 Light FM. Cubby and Christine
- 0:03Speaker 1: in the morning. It's been almost two decades.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Yeah, but I feel like I'm being reunited with an
- 0:08Speaker 2: old friend.
- 0:09Speaker 1: It feels like a rewind.
- 0:10Speaker 3: It really is.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Oh, which we'll talk about in a second. Clay Aiken
- 0:13Speaker 1: is in the building.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Thank you. It's good to be back.
- 0:16Speaker 1: You really are back. You never went away, but you
- 0:18Speaker 1: are back with new music.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Well, I mean, just back here with y'all. It's been
- 0:22Speaker 3: a while.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Yeah, it all started.
- 0:23Speaker 3: We were just talking about, she looks exactly the same
- 0:25Speaker 3: as I saw her last time.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I tell her that all the time. She's like, oh,
- 0:28Speaker 1: you're just being nice.
- 0:29Speaker 3: When I came in, I was like, wait a second,
- 0:31Speaker 3: I know you.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Because she looked exactly the same.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
- 0:34Speaker 3: It's really, really disgusting.
- 0:35Speaker 1: It's awful.
- 0:36Speaker 3: It's very upsetting. Because I'm sitting here tripping over my
- 0:39Speaker 3: face as I walk in the door.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I was going to say, you're looking pretty good yourself.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Come on.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Well, you're a morning person, you said.
- 0:44Speaker 3: I am a morning person.
- 0:45Speaker 1: You like getting up early? I do.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I was just saying, and I've lived here for a
- 0:49Speaker 3: long time, when my kid was a little younger, and...
- 0:52Speaker 3: I got up because you can take the dogs off
- 0:54Speaker 3: leash in the park before a certain hour.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Right.
- 0:57Speaker 3: And so I learned to get up for that reason.
- 0:59Speaker 3: And the city never sleeps, obviously, but it does sleep
- 1:02Speaker 3: a little. It dozes between 3.30 and 5. And it
- 1:08Speaker 3: is just lovely.
- 1:09Speaker 1: That's what we're driving in.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:11Speaker 1: Don't you love it? I actually do love it.
- 1:12Speaker 2: It feels like it's just for us. We can cross, like,
- 1:15Speaker 2: the middle of 6th Avenue and there's no cars.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Right. Wherever we want.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And then.
- 1:20Speaker 3: It does this until 9 on January 1st. That's the best.
- 1:24Speaker 3: After New Year's, after New Year's Eve, after the stuff
- 1:26Speaker 3: driving through Times Square. And the tourists are gone. It's
- 1:29Speaker 3: a beautiful part. Those are the most beautiful times in
- 1:31Speaker 3: New York. And I don't recommend tourists looking at them
- 1:33Speaker 3: because we want them for ourselves.
- 1:36Speaker 1: So you have a place here in New York, but
- 1:37Speaker 1: you also, you mainly spend most of your time in
- 1:39Speaker 1: North Carolina, correct?
- 1:40Speaker 2: I do, yeah.
- 1:41Speaker 3: In Raleigh? In Raleigh, yeah.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I was born and raised, and I kind of wanted
- 1:46Speaker 3: my kid to grow up in the same place that
- 1:48Speaker 3: I grew up.
- 1:48Speaker 1: He.
- 1:49Speaker 3: It's at the same high school I went to. He
- 1:51Speaker 3: had my science teacher. Oh, wow. He doesn't find it
- 1:54Speaker 3: exciting at all. I tell it all the time. I
- 1:56Speaker 3: tell everybody, he had my science teacher. And he's like, God,
- 1:58Speaker 3: please stop telling that. But I think it's adorable. You know,
- 2:02Speaker 3: I love it. And I love that he kind of
- 2:03Speaker 3: was able to grow up around family and people who
- 2:05Speaker 3: I knew and same school and everything.
- 2:07Speaker 1: What's his name? Parker. And he's almost going to graduate.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Yeah, he graduates this year.
- 2:11Speaker 1: So I have a six and a four-year-old, and I'm
- 2:13Speaker 1: in my 50s. So, like, you started young, right? I
- 2:17Speaker 1: feel like I'm behind now.
- 2:18Speaker 3: For New York and L.A. and Chicago, I did start young.
- 2:23Speaker 3: But for Raleigh, I'm practically a grandparent. I mean, genuinely.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I was saying to somebody that all of his friends'
- 2:31Speaker 3: parents watched Idol. They'll say, oh, we watched you. And
- 2:35Speaker 3: I said, oh, we were in middle school. Get out
- 2:38Speaker 3: of my face. It's like, Kristen, you mentioned this off
- 2:41Speaker 3: the air. When people say to us, I grew up
- 2:43Speaker 3: listening to you, it's very flattering.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah. but it's also kind of hurts.
- 2:47Speaker 3: But it makes my knees crack just a little bit more.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Because you look at the person and you're like, how
- 2:51Speaker 2: old are you exactly?
- 2:52Speaker 1: I know, I know.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Don't ever ask that question. That's a dangerous question because
- 2:56Speaker 3: when they say that they were six, it really hurts me.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I know, I know. Well, how has it been 18
- 3:02Speaker 1: years since your last album? And what made you want
- 3:05Speaker 1: to put out new music?
- 3:07Speaker 3: All the same. All the stuff we're talking about. I mean,
- 3:09Speaker 3: 18 years, Parker was born, he's 18 now. He was
- 3:11Speaker 3: born 18 years ago. And I didn't want to be
- 3:15Speaker 3: I was on the road so much in the early
- 3:17Speaker 3: after I'd spend 90% of the year on the road.
- 3:21Speaker 3: I didn't want to not be around, especially when he
- 3:23Speaker 3: started elementary school. I stayed in one place. And now
- 3:27Speaker 3: he's 18. He wants me out of the house. So
- 3:29Speaker 3: you're getting in your way.
- 3:30Speaker 1: You're about to be an empty nester.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what it is.
- 3:33Speaker 2: It's actually a good plan, Cubby, to get your own house. Like,
- 3:35Speaker 2: kick the parents out.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:37Speaker 3: And the kids are like.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Hey, I got my own home.
- 3:39Speaker 3: He's very independent. He's actually independent. Well, I guess I
- 3:42Speaker 3: can say that he's by himself this week. He's 18 now,
- 3:45Speaker 3: so it's perfectly fine. He's by himself this week while
- 3:47Speaker 3: I'm up here. And he's doing perfectly well. He's doing great.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Is he into music?
- 3:52Speaker 3: Is he you? He was me to a disturbing degree
- 3:57Speaker 3: until puberty hit. And then we diverged.
- 4:00Speaker 2: It's time to change.
- 4:01Speaker 3: He's the straight kid and the gay dad. It didn't work.
- 4:05Speaker 3: We totally became different people when the hormones started hitting.
- 4:08Speaker 3: He's into cars. He's into planes. He's going to be
- 4:10Speaker 3: a pilot. He's very technical. He wants loud engines. And
- 4:13Speaker 3: I'm like, what? Where did you come from? I thought
- 4:16Speaker 3: you were going to go see a musical with me.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Oh, Christine can do that.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yes, I will do that.
- 4:22Speaker 1: She loves a good musical.
- 4:23Speaker 2: I'm trying to read. So like last time I saw you,
- 4:25Speaker 2: which I believe was Z100 Days, you were doing Broadway. Yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 2: I did.
- 4:29Speaker 3: I did Spamalot. You did Spamalot. Yes. Almost 20 years ago.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Well, thank you very much. I loved it. And I
- 4:36Speaker 3: love the whole environment there. But yeah, he didn't get
- 4:38Speaker 3: into that.
- 4:39Speaker 1: He was.
- 4:40Speaker 3: And it's great. His uncle is David Foster. His mom's
- 4:43Speaker 3: brother is David Foster, which means his aunt is Kat McPhee.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So he has an aunt and a dad who came
- 4:47Speaker 3: in second on Idol. So music is in the family.
- 4:51Speaker 3: He grew up around it. And I think he just
- 4:54Speaker 3: wanted to be different.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Well, I want to talk about your new song, Rewind.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And then we'll come back and talk more with you.
- 4:59Speaker 1: But I heard this song for the first time from
- 5:02Speaker 1: one of your people. Send it to me.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Good for them.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And I'm not lying, Clay. My jaw dropped. It's my
- 5:09Speaker 1: kind of music. It has that retro feel.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Yep.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Um, I'm a big fan of nostalgia. I know a
- 5:14Speaker 1: lot of people feel, look forward, don't look back. I
- 5:17Speaker 1: like doing both. Yeah. I want to look forward and
- 5:20Speaker 1: I like to look back and, and the video hit me, um,
- 5:23Speaker 1: the way you integrated the, your, your old idol contestants. Um,
- 5:27Speaker 1: tell us about rewind and the video. Tell me everything
- 5:30Speaker 1: before I play it.
- 5:30Speaker 3: It is probably, I mean, it's probably my favorite song
- 5:33Speaker 3: I've ever recorded, which was a surprise to me because
- 5:35Speaker 3: I don't, you know, I don't, haven't typically done uptempo stuff.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Um, but other than invisible many, many years ago and, and,
- 5:42Speaker 3: It came across the desk, so to speak, and my
- 5:45Speaker 3: jaw dropped too. I said, this is exactly what I
- 5:46Speaker 3: want to talk about. I knew exactly how it was.
- 5:49Speaker 3: It talks about the, you know, looking back to rekindle
- 5:54Speaker 3: the love you had for something. Because I don't think
- 5:56Speaker 3: nostalgia necessarily has to mean looking back. It's about getting
- 5:59Speaker 3: a feeling, right? It's getting the feeling and the love
- 6:01Speaker 3: and the excitement back. that you had from something, and
- 6:05Speaker 3: using it in present day to feel better. And when
- 6:08Speaker 3: the world's not great, sometimes we need that sort of
- 6:12Speaker 3: reminder of things that made us feel happy. You can't
- 6:15Speaker 3: go back and watch old Idol episodes. They don't exist,
- 6:18Speaker 3: at least not the good seasons. But you can watch
- 6:22Speaker 3: your old TV shows you like, and that's what this
- 6:24Speaker 3: song is. And for me, it was like, holy crap,
- 6:28Speaker 3: this is exactly what I want to say. Being away
- 6:30Speaker 3: for Being away from the stage for 15 years, from
- 6:33Speaker 3: recording for 18 years, I could not feel luckier to
- 6:38Speaker 3: have this song. I wish I could take 100% of
- 6:41Speaker 3: credit for it. I think I sang it decently, but
- 6:44Speaker 3: I didn't write it. You hit some high notes there.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Trust me, I've had to hit them a few times
- 6:49Speaker 3: in the morning, and that's not the easiest thing either.
- 6:51Speaker 3: But it's a great song, and I'm just lucky to
- 6:54Speaker 3: have it. be a part of my return, so to speak. Well,
- 6:57Speaker 3: let's play it right now, okay? This is Clay Aiken.
- 6:59Speaker 1: He's live in studio. And this is Rewind. Light FM.
