- 0:21Everett, I didn't even say anything.
- 0:23I think there's something in
- 0:40Revelation. Yeah, we're not going to get
- 0:42that much hope. Everybody had a good week last
- 0:47week. We are at about the midway point
- 0:53of our study through the book of Hebrews.
- 0:56And so given that, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that
- 1:00we're at about the midway point of the Book of Hebrews.
- 1:03So we are, if you haven't already turned there.
- 1:06We are in Hebrews chapter 6 this morning.
- 1:08We will be making our way through the the last section of
- 1:11chapter 6 and then into Chapter 7, and hopefully we'll get
- 1:16through most of Chapter 7 today, even if we don't get through the
- 1:18entirety of it, which is fine because in my plan, chapter 8
- 1:24was next week anyway and it's a short chapter, so we can throw a
- 1:27little bit extra in there and we'll be fine.
- 1:31We've got a lot of territory to cover today.
- 1:33We've got a lot of things to discuss today in this section.
- 1:37We're going to pick up in verse 13 and go through the end of
- 1:41chapter 6. But I want to just make mention
- 1:45of one thing before we get started.
- 1:47And that is part of the reason why I wanted you to go through
- 1:51and do the weekly readings through the book of Hebrews is
- 1:55so that once we got to these sections, we weren't necessarily
- 1:58doing a lot of of backtracking to introduce things or to
- 2:03reintroduce things. Because of the fact that there
- 2:08is so much to discuss and so much to cover.
- 2:10We hopefully are at the point where those first four or five
- 2:14chapters, we're now really familiar with them and we know
- 2:17exactly where we are in our study of the book of Hebrews.
- 2:20We are going to back up and look at just a couple of things as we
- 2:24kind of lay the foundation for what we're going to discuss
- 2:26today. Chapter 5 begins this discussion
- 2:31of Jesus as the high Priest and in the 1st 11 verses of chapter
- 2:405 you have him talking about Jesus as the High priest.
- 2:43He did not glorify himself. He what did not place himself
- 2:47there, the Father put Him there, that He is the one who is able
- 2:51to do all of these things that the high priest does, but
- 2:54without the weaknesses of the high priest.
- 2:57And that's going to be discussed again as we talk about Chapter 7
- 3:00today. But then you have the statement
- 3:02that is made in verse 11 and in verse 11, he says, of whom we
- 3:09have much to say and hard to explain since you have become
- 3:14dull of hearing that. There's two passages that I want
- 3:18you to kind of underline in your minds.
- 3:20If you write in your Bibles, you can circle them, underline them,
- 3:24star them, put bright flashy signals next to them, whatever
- 3:27it is that works for you. As we lead into our discussion
- 3:32today. The first one of these is verse
- 3:3511 of chapter 5 because he says we have much to say and hard to
- 3:42explain when most people get to the latter section of chapter 6
- 3:47and the entirety of Chapter 7. For most people, it is the most
- 3:53confusing part of the book of Hebrews.
- 3:57I wouldn't say it's the most misunderstood.
- 3:59I think that's probably chapters 9 and 10.
- 4:02But this is the most confusing to people because it's so far
- 4:06outside the bandwidth of what we commonly think about or discuss
- 4:11in our terms when it comes to the things that are discussed in
- 4:15the book of Hebrews. So he states in verse 11, there
- 4:19are things that we need to talk to you about that are hard to
- 4:22explain. Now notice the qualification
- 4:24that he puts there. He doesn't say they're hard to
- 4:27understand. He says they're hard to explain
- 4:30because of your mindset, because you're dull of hearing right
- 4:35now. You're not really listening.
- 4:38And so we've got to be even more careful about what we say and
- 4:43how we say it to say it the right way, so to speak.
- 4:47The second verse that I want you to kind of underline in our
- 4:49discussion today is down in chapter 6, as we talked about at
- 4:52the close of our class last week.
- 4:55And it is chapter 6, verse 10 where he says for God is not
- 5:02unjust to forget your work and labor of love, which you have
- 5:07shown toward his name in that you have ministered to the
- 5:11Saints and do minister. We emphasized last week the fact
- 5:15that the writer here and the speaker hears talks about the
- 5:19fact that God is not unjust to forget.
- 5:24He doesn't, He doesn't go around just forgetting all the good
- 5:27that has been done. He says for all the things that
- 5:30you've done in ministering to the Saints and the fact that you
- 5:33do minister, you've not quit. We emphasized this last week.
- 5:37They've not quit. They've not given up.
- 5:39They've not walked away. They're struggling.
- 5:42They're trying to make determinations as to what it is
- 5:45that they need to do and how they need to do it.
- 5:48The rest of chapter 6 is going to be an emphasis based on this
- 5:52point that God is not unjust, that God is going to remember,
- 5:57that God remembers the promises that he's made and he's going to
- 6:00keep them. Chapter 7 is going to hearken
- 6:04back to these areas of things that are difficult to explain
- 6:07back in chapter 5, verse 11. But I want you to have those two
- 6:11key phrases or the contextual phrases for what we're going to
- 6:15talk about this morning. Chapter 6 is going to pick up.
- 6:19Remember, we've he's talked about the fact that they can't
- 6:22quit, they can't give up. You can't turn back.
- 6:26You have to be those who leave the elementary principles and
- 6:29that you move forward toward a stronger faith and laying a
- 6:34greater foundation for faith. And so he says beginning in
- 6:40verse 13. For when God made a promise to
- 6:43Abraham, because he could swear by no one greater, he swore by
- 6:47himself, saying, surely blessing, I will bless you, and
- 6:51multiplying I will multiply you. And so after he had patiently
- 6:56endured, he obtained the promise.
- 6:59For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for
- 7:02confirmation is for them an end of all dispute.
- 7:05Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of
- 7:09promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an
- 7:12oath. That by two immutable things in
- 7:15which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong
- 7:19consolation who have fled to lay refuge or lay hold of the hope
- 7:24set before us. This hope we have as an anchor
- 7:28of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the
- 7:32presence behind the veil where the forerunner has entered for
- 7:36us, even Jesus having become high priest forever according to
- 7:41the Order of Melchizedek. When you read this section, what
- 7:48do most people get out of it? God doesn't lie, all right?
- 7:53God doesn't lie. What's the second thing that
- 7:58most people pull out of this section?
- 7:59A lot of people just get confused about the Order of
- 8:02Melchizedek. All right, Which then goes into
- 8:06the discussion of Chapter 7. There's one other phrase that
- 8:09usually people will pull out of this section of scripture.
- 8:13Hope. Hope as the anchor of the soul.
- 8:16You know we have an anchor, right?
- 8:19The old song comes from this particular passage, but I want
- 8:25you to see and and we're not going to spend 30 minutes here
- 8:28this morning, but I want you to see the emphasis of what he's
- 8:32saying. Going back to verse 10, God is
- 8:35not unjust that he is going to forget what you've done, but
- 8:41he's also not unjust to forget the promises that he made.
- 8:47And that's the emphasis of verses 13 through 20.
- 8:50God doesn't forget what He promised and God is not unjust
- 8:55that He will not fulfill His promise.
- 8:58Well, what promise is being discussed?
- 9:07Notice again verses 11 and 12. We desire or actually I'm sorry,
- 9:14back up to verse 9. But beloved, we are confident of
- 9:18better things concerning you. Yes, we things that accompany
- 9:22salvation, though we speak in this manner.
- 9:27What's he talking about? He's talking about salvation.
- 9:34He's talking about what it is that brings us to the point of
- 9:38being saved before God. Remember, they're in danger of
- 9:44walking away. They're in danger of quitting
- 9:47and giving up. The writer here says, I don't
- 9:52want you to think that God will not save you or that God doesn't
- 9:57want to save you or that the fact that you are doubting and
- 10:01that you are struggling in this particular area means that God
- 10:05is going to give up on you. He says we are confident of
- 10:10better things concerning you. You're better than this.
- 10:14But he also says that these things that accompany salvation.
- 10:20God is not unjust to forget your work and your labor.
- 10:27So verse 13, he says for when God made a promise, underline
- 10:33that word promise because that's that's the first key to this
- 10:36particular section. When God made a promise to
- 10:41Abraham. Remember, these are Jewish
- 10:43Christians. So the relationship with Abraham
- 10:46is everything as a Jew, right? It's the foundation of
- 10:50everything that you've believed in and trusted in when it comes
- 10:53to your relationship with God. When God made a promise to
- 10:59Abraham because he could swear by no one greater, he swore by
- 11:06himself saying, surely blessing I will bless you and multiplying
- 11:12I will multiply you. This statement from verse 14 is
- 11:16from Genesis chapter 22, verse 17.
- 11:19It comes on the heels of Abraham's faith being shown
- 11:25through his willingness to sacrifice Isaac.
- 11:35He could swear by no one greater, so he swore by himself,
- 11:41saying, surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I
- 11:44will multiply you. And so verse 15, after Abraham
- 11:48had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
- 11:52Did God keep his promise to Abraham?
- 11:56Yes, he did. He kept the promise that he made
- 12:00in Genesis chapter 13. He kept the promise that he made
- 12:03in Genesis chapter 15. He kept the promise that he made
- 12:06in Genesis chapter 17. You kept the promise that he
- 12:09made in Genesis chapter 22. In every instance where God made
- 12:14a promise to Abraham, he kept it.
- 12:19He says for men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for
- 12:23confirmation is for them an end of all dispute.
- 12:32There's the second word that is the key to this section, the
- 12:37oath. So you have the promise
- 12:40discussed in verse 13. You have the oath that is first
- 12:45mentioned in verse 16. Now, what is an oath?
- 12:52OK, but we've already talked about the promise.
- 12:55These are these are distinctive ideas, not necessarily parallel.
- 13:02All right, So the oath, the oath is the seal.
- 13:05It's the guarantee that whatever it is that has been promised is
- 13:09going to be delivered. As a matter of fact, he says in
- 13:15verse 16, for men indeed swear by the greater and an oath for
- 13:19confirmation is to them an end of all dispute.
- 13:25You remember how it used to be back in the good old days, in
- 13:28the days before we had to have a 40 page contract for every
- 13:31discussion that was had in order to sign it 15,000 times to give
- 13:36our agreement that we're actually going to do what we
- 13:38said we were going to do? How did it used to be sealed?
- 13:43The handshake was good enough. That was that was your oath.
- 13:48That was your ceiling of the promise that you made that I'm
- 13:52going to pay this money, I'm going to do this job.
- 13:55I'm going to be at this location at this particular time.
- 13:58That was the ceiling binding agreement between the two.
- 14:10The oath for confirmation is to them an end of all dispute.
- 14:14Both sides have agreed and the promise has been made.
- 14:17It will be kept. Now notice what he says in verse
- 14:2117. Thus God determining to show
- 14:26more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability.
- 14:31By the way, the word immutability in the new King
- 14:33James is used here a couple of different times.
- 14:37We don't usually use that word in our day-to-day vocabulary.
- 14:41Make it unchangeable in your mind that that that's what it's
- 14:45saying is, is it's not subject to change.
- 14:48It's not subject to being revised or amended or otherwise
- 14:52dissolved just at a moment's notice.
- 14:56So thus God determined to determining to show more
- 14:59abundantly to the heirs of promise the unchangeability of
- 15:04his counsel confirmed it by an oath question.
- 15:12Who are the heirs of promise? We are.
- 15:18Remember, he's talking to Christians about salvation, and
- 15:24he's reminding them through the illustration of the promise that
- 15:27he made to Abraham that God has also made promises to you.
- 15:35He made that promise of salvation.
- 15:38He gave that promise that there is eternal life waiting on the
- 15:44other side of this life. And so, being determined to show
- 15:50more abundantly to the heirs of promise the unchangeability of
- 15:54his counsel, he confirmed it by an oath.
- 15:59What was the oath? What sealed that promise?
- 16:07The blood of Christ. He's going to go in detail about
- 16:11this in Chapter 9. The oath by God to us for what
- 16:18his promises are is the blood of Jesus.
- 16:23So that verse 18 So that by two unchangeable things in which it
- 16:30is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation
- 16:35who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
- 16:42He gave us a promise of eternal salvation, and he sealed that
- 16:47promise. That oath that was given was
- 16:51bound by the blood that Jesus shed to put that promise in
- 16:56place. What stronger oath, what
- 17:03stronger promise, what stronger seal could God put in place than
- 17:08the blood of His only begotten Son?
- 17:14And if that's not strong enough of an oath of what God intends
- 17:18to do for us, there's nothing God can do to help us because
- 17:25it's not going to matter what God says or does.
- 17:27We're not going to be willing to be obedient.
- 17:32And so he says that by two unchangeable things.
- 17:35Guess what? God can't come back later and
- 17:37say, you know what? I've changed the terms of the
- 17:39contract. Faithfulness is no longer
- 17:42sufficient. You're going to have to have
- 17:45faithfulness. And this, Nope, can't go through
- 17:49and do that. Not going to go through and do
- 17:52that. But also the fact that the blood
- 17:59has already been shed means it's bound and it can't be changed
- 18:02either, and it won't be changed. Those two unchangeable things
- 18:11were laid forth by God in which it is impossible for him to lie.
- 18:17So that we who's the we Christians?
- 18:25So that Christians might have strong consolation who have fled
- 18:30for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
- 18:33You want to know what one of the most frustrating things for a
- 18:41preacher to deal with is? To have those who are Christians
- 18:50and have been Christians for a long time who act as though
- 18:55there is no certainty that God's promise is going to be fulfilled
- 19:01in their life, that God is actually going to be true to it.
- 19:08Now, they don't normally formulate it that way.
- 19:10They don't. They don't normally say, you
- 19:12know what? I don't know if God's going to
- 19:13hold up his part. Usually it comes out in a form
- 19:17of I don't know if I'm good enough.
- 19:20I don't know if God's actually going to take away all of these
- 19:25things or or if I've done enough bad things in my life.
- 19:28If I've made so many mistakes or if I keep making the same
- 19:32mistake over and over again. No matter how hard I try, God's
- 19:37just going to get tired of me. We've got to remember, God
- 19:47doesn't place everything on us. Does God know that we're not
- 19:54going to be perfect? Yes, he does.
- 20:01Does God know that even in spite of our best efforts, we're going
- 20:04to fail at times? Yes, He does.
- 20:10But the question for us is what are we going to do when that
- 20:14happens? Do we quit?
- 20:17Do we give up? Do we ignore it?
- 20:19Do we pretend we didn't do it? Do we lie about it?
- 20:23Do we make excuses for it or do we repent and do we fix it and
- 20:28do we move on? God is faithful.
- 20:39God made a promise. He sealed it with an oath
- 20:43through the blood of Christ. And the whole point of this
- 20:49section is if we stay true to Him, if we keep trying, if we
- 20:56keep working, if we keep putting forth every effort to be
- 21:00faithful to him, he has laid out this promise and this oath to
- 21:08give us a strong consolation that we're where we need to be.
- 21:17This hope, he says, verse 19, we have as an anchor of the soul,
- 21:23both sure and steadfast. What hope?
- 21:27Not the hope that maybe someday, hopefully, if I haven't done too
- 21:31much and I haven't gone too far and I haven't failed too many
- 21:35times, God might give me a just a crack of an opening to be able
- 21:38to get in. That's not hope, That's wishful
- 21:43thinking. Hope is a confident expectation.
- 21:52That's the biblical definition of hope, that as we walk through
- 21:56this life, we know what we're doing to seek to serve God.
- 22:00We know that we are making every effort to be what God wants us
- 22:04to be. And I mean this with all
- 22:06sincerity. And God help us, we're going to
- 22:09fail, but he's going to be there.
- 22:13This hope, this confident expectation we have as an anchor
- 22:19to the soul that keeps us next to God no matter what.
- 22:25Sure and steadfast. Because God made a promise, and
- 22:35he sealed it with the oath of the blood of Christ.
- 22:38When we became Christians, we made a promise, did we not?
- 22:47I made a promise that I was going to serve God for the rest
- 22:50of my life, no matter what. Did I seal that promise with an
- 23:00oath? From the biblical definition,
- 23:05you sealed it with baptism. I sealed it with baptism, by
- 23:12which I told God the old man is done away.
- 23:16I'm living a new life. I've sealed my oath to God by
- 23:22means of that same burial, death, burial and resurrection
- 23:30so that my sins might be washed away.
- 23:34You see, it's not just a promise and an oath on one side.
- 23:36It's a promise and an oath on both sides.
- 23:39They meet as that handshake in the middle.
- 23:42Everett. Well, I'm just thinking we break
- 23:44that oath so many times, but yet God's grace allows us to
- 23:48continue to maintain, you know, it just it just reseals that
- 23:53dedication to that oath back back to him again.
- 23:57I do understand what you're saying.
- 23:58I'm going to word it just a little bit differently because
- 24:00I, I want us to understand falling short of perfection is
- 24:07not breaking the oath. It's not breaking our promise to
- 24:12God. The only way we break our
- 24:16promise to God is if I quit trying to do what's right, if I
- 24:22fail, if I fall short, if I commit a sin and I realize that
- 24:26I've committed that sin. And I immediately strive to do
- 24:29what I can to change it and to make it right and, and to do my
- 24:33best to, to make amends for what I have done, whether it's in
- 24:37something that I've said or some action that I've undertaken.
- 24:40Guess what? I haven't failed in my promise.
- 24:44I, I, I have fallen short of what I need to be and what I
- 24:48want to be. But does God still see me as
- 24:52faithful? Yes, one of the beauties of all
- 24:58of the things in the Old Testament and all of the things
- 25:02that God shows us, whether it's in the life of Peter or in the
- 25:05life of the disciples and and so on and so forth.
- 25:09Or whether you're talking about the life of David in the Old
- 25:11Testament or Abraham in the Old Testament, is that God still
- 25:17considered those people faithful to be his servants, to be his
- 25:20friends, to be those that he had a close association with.
- 25:25Even when they fell short because they never turned their
- 25:30back on God and they never treated God as though he was
- 25:32just supposed to accept what they've done and be OK with it.
- 25:39That's when we fail is when we treat God like the promise we
- 25:47made to Him is not nearly as important as the promise He made
- 25:50to us, I find. It interesting that, you know,
- 25:57he goes back to Abraham, who obviously, you know, that's what
- 26:02their whole basis is on, but he doesn't mention Abraham and
- 26:05trying to help that promise along.
- 26:08And you know, they have to know this, you know, and in the back
- 26:13of my mind, it's the same with us, you know, OK, God, I believe
- 26:17your promise. But hey, where is it?
- 26:19Where where's the good life? Where's the good things?
- 26:23And I think that's where they they probably are struggling.
- 26:27Also sure, which is why the things that God promised, the
- 26:34salvation that God promises, is sealed in that way.
- 26:38What you're describing is obedience.
- 26:42Yes, Obedience is not perfection and and flawless adherence to
- 26:46the Jew. Obedience is.
- 26:48I keep trying, I keep picking up, I keep learning and take
- 26:53that particular because you're exactly right.
- 26:56Now take that thought. And this was one of the other
- 27:00things I wanted to do before we moved on.
- 27:04If you write in your Bible, I want you to take your pen and
- 27:11here at the end of chapter 6, I want you to write in Chapter 11
- 27:14Hebrews 11 because the epitome of the proof for this is going
- 27:19to be that hall of faith, right? Every single person that he
- 27:23mentions is there is is imperfect.
- 27:27They were flawed, they they failed, they fell short, but yet
- 27:33every single one of them in there is called faithful by God
- 27:41because they retained their confidence in the promises of
- 27:45God and were obedient. This hope we have as an anchor
- 27:52of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the
- 27:56presence behind the veil. In other words, the presence of
- 27:59God. Old Testament terminology behind
- 28:02the veil meaning into the very presence of God behind the
- 28:05curtain where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus
- 28:13having become high priest forever according to the order
- 28:16of Melchizedek. By the way, there is a term used
- 28:19here in verse 20 that is not used anywhere else in Scripture.
- 28:23But I find it to be a fascinating term and I know we
- 28:26don't have a lot of time to to dwell on it, but I want to point
- 28:30you to it right now. When we think of a forerunner,
- 28:34who do we think of John as the forerunner of Jesus?
- 28:40Do you recognize that every single one of us has a
- 28:42forerunner? Verse 20 says Jesus is the
- 28:50forerunner who has entered the presence of God for us, having
- 28:59become the high priest forever according to the order of
- 29:02Melchizedek. Anybody remember John chapter
- 29:0414, verses one through 3? What does he tell the disciples
- 29:09on the night that he's about to be betrayed?
- 29:13I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place
- 29:18for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that
- 29:21where I am, there you may be also by definition.
- 29:24What does he say? I'm going to be the forerunner.
- 29:29John came to pave the way for me.
- 29:31I'm going to pave the way for you.
- 29:36Have you ever thought of Jesus in those terms?
- 29:39That's exactly what is described here in verse 20, that Jesus has
- 29:45gone into the presence of God as our high priest to make the way
- 29:51to pave the way for us. He is our forerunner.
- 29:59He goes ahead to prepare the way.
- 30:05Now, for the third time in the last two chapters, we have this
- 30:10statement of Jesus being high priest forever according to the
- 30:13order of Melchizedek. So with 15 minutes left in class
- 30:18this morning, we're going to dive into Chapter 7 and we'll
- 30:22see how far we get. But as you come into Chapter 7,
- 30:28this is the this is considered by most people to be the most
- 30:31confusing chapter in the book of Hebrews, and there's a reason
- 30:35for that. The reason for that is you are
- 30:37not 1st century Jewish Christians, but you have to
- 30:42think like 1st century Jewish Christians for it to really make
- 30:44sense. Three times in chapters 5 and 6,
- 30:48the the speaker or writer of the book of Hebrews has said he is a
- 30:52priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek or a high
- 30:56priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
- 30:59We've talked about already that Chapter 7 is kind of the second
- 31:02rabbit chase that he's going to make.
- 31:05And this goes back to that statement in chapter 5, verse 11
- 31:09of things that are hard to explain.
- 31:11So understand it's going to be as hard for those 1st century
- 31:15Christians to grab hold and run with it as it is for us
- 31:20sometimes. But there's one key identifier
- 31:26that I want you to hold on to as we enter into Chapter 7 that I
- 31:29think helps more than anything else in understanding what it is
- 31:33that he's talking about. And that is the fact that these
- 31:40Jewish Christians run everything from the standpoint of their
- 31:44Jewish heritage. They run everything back to the
- 31:48Law of Moses and the priesthood of Aaron.
- 31:55The writer of the book of Hebrews is telling them Jesus
- 32:00priesthood doesn't reach back to the Old Testament, it reaches
- 32:05back before the Old Testament was in place.
- 32:12The comparison of who Jesus is as our High Priest goes back
- 32:17beyond the old covenant to a time in the days of Abraham
- 32:24before the law of Moses even existed.
- 32:32So what are we talking about with this Melchizedek Chapter 7
- 32:37verse one says for this Melchizedek, king of Salem,
- 32:41priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham, returning from the
- 32:45slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also
- 32:49Abraham gave a tenth part of all.
- 32:51First being translated king of righteousness, and then also
- 32:55king of Salem, meaning King of peace, without father, without
- 33:01mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days
- 33:05nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest
- 33:10continually. The introduction to Melchizedek
- 33:16is this. For the Jew, heritage is
- 33:20everything. Being able to tell what tribe
- 33:24you were from, who your daddy and your granddaddy and your
- 33:27great granddaddy was. Why do you think we have the
- 33:29genealogies of Jesus in Matthew chapter 1 and in Luke chapter 3?
- 33:34It is because to the Jew, genealogy is everything.
- 33:41Especially for Matthew's genealogy, because it's the
- 33:44genealogy of a king. You know how much we know about
- 33:53Melchizedek coming into Hebrews Chapter 7?
- 33:58There are exactly 3 verses in the Old Testament that tell you
- 34:04about Melchizedek. Those are Genesis chapter 14,
- 34:08verses 18 through 20. That's it.
- 34:13And the entirety of The thing is, as is stated here in Chapter
- 34:177 verses one through 4, when Abraham came back from defeating
- 34:21the kings and retrieving Lot and bringing him back, he brings
- 34:25back all of those that were taken and all of the possessions
- 34:29and everything else, and he brings them back and he meets
- 34:32the king of Sodom. And at the same time that he
- 34:35meets the king of Sodom, with the king of Sodom is the king of
- 34:39Salem. Now we know Salem by a different
- 34:44name. Today it is Jerusalem.
- 34:55Melchizedek is the king of the ancient Jerusalem, but is he
- 35:02just a king? He is a king and he is the High
- 35:09Priest of the Most High God. I think one of the biggest
- 35:13mistakes that we make when looking at the Old Testament is
- 35:16we look at the Old Testament and think that it tells us about
- 35:18every righteous person that ever lived.
- 35:24It's a snapshot with a focus of the things that God finds
- 35:28important for us to know about why we came to this place and
- 35:36what God did in laying the foundation for Jesus.
- 35:40There have been unquantified millions of believers and
- 35:44faithful servants of God during the days of the Old Testament
- 35:49that were never written about in that book.
- 35:53Doesn't mean they weren't faithful.
- 35:55Doesn't mean God didn't love them and God didn't care about
- 35:57them. They weren't pertinent to the
- 35:59story. That's OK.
- 36:03They're just as equally saved and faithful in the sight of
- 36:05God. You have the statement that's
- 36:10made in verse three that this king of Salem was without
- 36:17father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither
- 36:21beginning of days nor end of life.
- 36:23Now, there are many that take this statement and they say that
- 36:26he was some kind of miraculous being who wasn't actually a man
- 36:31at all. He was like Jesus.
- 36:36Well, number one, that's not like Jesus, but #2 think about
- 36:41it from the Jewish mindset and how important heritage and being
- 36:44able to prove your heritage is. What was the name of
- 36:50Melchizedek's father? What about his mother?
- 36:56When did was he born? When did he die?
- 37:01None of those things are known. None of those things were known
- 37:06by anybody to whom the book of Hebrews was originally written
- 37:10either. And you know what?
- 37:13It didn't matter because what mattered in Genesis chapter 14
- 37:19was not who Melchizedek was from the standpoint of his heritage,
- 37:25but who he was based upon his role and his responsibilities.
- 37:33He was the king of Salem and he was the high priest of the Most
- 37:36High God. That's all that mattered.
- 37:40What matters when it comes to Jesus?
- 37:44He is head over his church and he is our high priest.
- 37:49Now he is also a Jew, and under the Old Testament, and this is
- 37:56where things are going to start to be discussed in more detail.
- 38:01Under the Old Testament, was Jesus able to be a service of
- 38:06priests? Why not from tribe of Levi?
- 38:10OK, priests come from the tribe of Levi, but even more stringent
- 38:16than that, they have to come from the family of Aaron.
- 38:19Well, what tribe did Jesus come from?
- 38:26Judah. What family?
- 38:29What lineage? David, neither of those have
- 38:34anything to do with priesthood. As a matter of fact, that's what
- 38:36we're going to read in just a moment.
- 38:38So how does Jesus get to be the high priest?
- 38:43Because according to the old law, he's not eligible.
- 38:48It would be against the law. All right, that goes back to
- 38:54chapter 5. But let's go through and see the
- 38:55argument that he gives. And you're exactly right.
- 38:59God is the one who appoints him. But here's the key as we move
- 39:04forward. He's not appointed under the old
- 39:07law. Notice what he says, verse 4.
- 39:15Now consider how great this man was, Speaking of Melchizedek, to
- 39:19whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils.
- 39:26Who's held in the highest regard among the Jews?
- 39:30Abraham, he's at the pinnacle of everybody as far as men are
- 39:34concerned. Well, guess what Abraham did?
- 39:41Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils to Melchizedek.
- 39:47You know what that means, all right?
- 39:52He treated Melchizedek as greater than him.
- 39:57And indeed, those who are the sons of Levi, verse five, who
- 40:01received the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes
- 40:05from the people, according to the law, that is, from their
- 40:08brethren, Though they have come from the loins of Abraham, but
- 40:12he whose genealogy is not derived from them received
- 40:16tithes from Abraham, and blessed him who had the promises.
- 40:21Now, beyond all contradiction, the lesser is blessed by the
- 40:25better. Here mortal men receive tithes,
- 40:28but there he receives them, of whom it is witness that he
- 40:33lives. Even Levi, who receives tithes,
- 40:36paid ties through Abraham, so to speak, for he was still in the
- 40:40loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.
- 40:43Confusing terminology here, but let's walk through it real
- 40:46quick. What he says is the did the
- 40:51priest receive tithes from the people?
- 40:55Yes, as part of their responsibilities as the priests
- 40:58of God, That was part of what the law said they were supposed
- 41:01to do. Abraham gives tithes to
- 41:06Melchizedek, and Melchizedek does something that is done
- 41:14generally by a priest, receives bless or gives blessings to
- 41:20Abraham in return. Excuse me?
- 41:25As a matter of fact, you turn back to Genesis chapter 14 and
- 41:29the statement made by Melchizedek in verse 19 is
- 41:33Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and
- 41:37earth, and blessed be God Most High who has delivered your
- 41:41enemies into your hand. The blessing of a faithful
- 41:46servant. Not a faithful servant of
- 41:49Melchizedek, but a faithful servant of God.
- 41:53That's the blessing that Melchizedek bestows to Abraham.
- 42:02He says. But verse 6.
- 42:05But he whose genealogy is not derived from them receives
- 42:10tithes from Abraham. Melchizedek is not of the line
- 42:14of Levi. He lived 200 years before Levi
- 42:20is ever going to be born. As a matter of fact, the
- 42:29statement kind of tongue in cheek in verse 9 is that even
- 42:33Levi, who receives tithes paid ties through Abraham, so to
- 42:38speak, for he was in the loins of his father when Melchizedek
- 42:41met him. In other words, it's almost as
- 42:43though Levi himself were paying tithes through Abraham even
- 42:47though he wasn't even born yet, because he is the descendant of
- 42:51Abraham, and Abraham gave tithes to Melchizedek.
- 42:57In other words, is Levi? Are the priests that come
- 43:00through Levi any greater than Melchizedek was?
- 43:03Nope, they're not because Melchizedek holds a position
- 43:09that even they did not hold. They There is no Levite that was
- 43:15ever king, and yet Melchizedek is both king and priest.
- 43:26Therefore verse 11. If perfection were through the
- 43:30Levitical priesthood, for under it the people received the law
- 43:34of Moses, what further need was there that another priest should
- 43:39rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called
- 43:43according to the order of Aaron? For the priesthood being
- 43:47changed, of necessity, there is also a change of the law.
- 43:50For he of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe,
- 43:55from which no man has officiated at the altar.
- 43:59For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah, of which tribe
- 44:02Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.
- 44:05And it is yet far more evident if in the likeness of
- 44:09Melchizedek, there arises another priest who has come not
- 44:12according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but
- 44:15according to the power of an endless life.
- 44:19For he testifies, you are a priest forever according to the
- 44:23order of Melchizedek. Here's the point, the primary
- 44:31point of what it is he's trying to talk about.
- 44:35If perfection were given through the Levitical priesthood, in
- 44:38other words, if everything was perfect and nothing fell short
- 44:41under the Levitical priesthood, guess what?
- 44:44It wouldn't have needed to be changed, wouldn't have needed to
- 44:48be replaced. Was the Levitical priesthood
- 44:52perfect? Nope.
- 44:55Why? They were human, all right.
- 44:59Who were the first people that the Levites that the Levitical
- 45:02priests had to give offerings for themselves?
- 45:06Why? Because they weren't perfect.
- 45:14If perfection was through the the Levitical priesthood, what
- 45:18further need was there that another priest should arise?
- 45:21According to the order of Melchizedek, there would be
- 45:24none. The things that are stated here
- 45:32in Chapter 7, verses 11 through 17 are emphasizing the fact that
- 45:43the Old Testament has not been replaced.
- 45:47It was completed and a new covenant is in place that has a
- 45:56different priesthood that has a different law.
- 46:01What are they tempted to go back under?
- 46:06They're tempted to try to live under the dictates of the Old
- 46:09Law. What's the problem with that?
- 46:12It doesn't exist anymore. The Levitical priesthood, as God
- 46:18established it under the Old Testament, was set aside when
- 46:22the Law was completed. That's why Jesus isn't a high
- 46:27priest after the Levitical template.
- 46:32He's a high priest after the template of Melchizedek because
- 46:39he serves as our king for the body of Christ, and he also
- 46:47serves as our high priest who? Appointed.
- 46:51Melchizedek Well, if you go back to chapter 5, the emphasis that
- 46:57is made is that God appoints the Father, appoints each one.
- 47:02God appointed the Levitical high priest.
- 47:04He put Aaron in his place. He put Jesus in him, in his
- 47:08place. The emphasis then by implication
- 47:16is that Melchizedek was high priest not by proclaiming
- 47:18himself such, but because God put him in that place as well.
- 47:25And so he was appointed by God. All right, our time is up for
- 47:30this morning. We will pick up with verse 20.
- 47:33We will finish our discussions of Melchizedek and then see the
- 47:37closing argument that we have in chapter 8 of What Jesus?
