- 0:10SPEAKER_02: Uh how how frequently do you get spam calls on your phone?
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: Hey.
- 0:20SPEAKER_02: I just got one.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: They seem to happen all the time.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know what to tell you.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: And oftentimes they're like, uh, we're calling to let you know that you need some insurance.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Or some I get them all the time and I'll answer it, and then it'll just it'll hang up on me.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: And then I'll all of a sudden have a voicemail.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Hey, we'll be trying to get in touch with you because you have an IRS something or not.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I don't, no, I don't.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Or or uh, hey, we've notif we are we're calling to notify you that you have a virus on your Windows computer.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and like I don't have one of those.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I haven't used a Windows machine in forever.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: And then why would you know I have a virus?
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: And then why are you calling me?
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Or uh the a short story, but uh like I we bought a used car for our youngest daughter back in December, okay, January, whatever.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: It's a 2015 car.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: And because it was an older car, I bought the kind of extended warranty from this third-party company.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: Just out yeah.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: The guy that I bought it from told me the story, but I want a little bit greater sense of security.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: So it's one of these third-party used car warranty things.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: And so I was like, I'm gonna just pay this for a little bit and give myself a little blanket security.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I get these calls all the time from like, hey, we wanna we're reviewing your warranty coverage, and we want to just update some things.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: I'd be like, Yeah, what what company are you calling from me from?
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: Where whatever, whatever car warranty.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I actually already have extended coverage for this other company over here, and it's not you.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Well, we could beat it, you know.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: And so the funny, the humorous, it gets annoying, but the humorous thing is like the frequency of somebody trying to sell me something that I already have.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Yes, right, um, and I think that illustrates principally what we start to see in the Garden of Eden.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Okay, a sales pitch.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, or in this temptation.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Well, you think you've got this good product, but it's actually could be better.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: If I got a deal for you, right, merge.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Uh so it's yeah, it's kind of one of those things.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: And so uh this past Sunday we turned the page into Genesis chapter three.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: The fall.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: And uh when the wheels fall off the wagon, yes, so to speak.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: And so I'm excited about where we're a major plot point of the text.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: It really is a big one.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Uh so I'm Ricky.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: This is Alan.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: You uh found us on the High Dive podcast.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: Please give us a thumbs up or a share or a like or review, whatever.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Um, we're a ministry of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia, and we're just striving to go digger deeper into scripture as we try to explore and meditate on God's word.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: And so now we're here in Genesis 3.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's a lot of fascinating things I want to discuss.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Maybe we'll dig into some of them today and save some of them for future episodes because we'll be have about four episodes in Genesis three.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: But um uh I I want I want to start with this question.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Um it's subtly referred to in the garden, but okay, we've looked the last several weeks, like nine or ten weeks, on the creation of the world, the creation of humanity.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: But there's other beings, like there's angelic beings.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: When were they created?
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: When did when did they come to be?
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: What are your thoughts on that?
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Or what does scripture tell us about that?
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: It's um so I don't think I don't think that scripture gives the modern reader an X a very obvious answer to that question.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: I think it gives the ancient reader a fairly obvious answer to that question.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Um and so I'll kind of go around the elbow to get to my nose.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: So, like um, when you read in places like Job and places like the psalmist psalms, when they're kind of reflecting or meditating on the creation narrative or the cosmos, they will talk about the heavenly host.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Or if you go to Luke, and that suddenly there was with the heavenly host, right?
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Um, in the imagination of the ancient world, when you look up into the night sky and you see these things moving across or sitting up in this dome above us, the skies above us, uh, or you see these large bodies move across the sky in day and move across the sky at night, in the imagination of the ancient perspective, from Egyptian mythology to Babylonian mythology to Assyrian mythology to Mesopotamic, like those were spiritual beings in the skies.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: And so the when you we when you look at the psalmist, the psalmist talks about um the stars as Elohim.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Um we're talking in Ezekiel, we talk about the morning star as an Elohim, Job talks about these heavenly hosts as Elohim.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: So in the scriptures, there's this correlation between the idea that the things that we see in the night sky are actually Elohim, and that's the place where they dwell.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: So if in the imagination of the ancients, when they read this text or received this text from Moses on Sinai, and as they meditated on it over the course of you know their years, they would have understood the sun, the moon, and the stars to be these ancient spiritual beings.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: So then you ask yourself the question well, what day were the sun, moon, and stars created?
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Well, sun, moon, and stars were created on day four.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Now, if you go back to Genesis 1, you look at day four, and you read it, there's a couple things that are very different about day four, right?
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna just read these real quick.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: This is beginning in verse 14.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: It says, And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for let them be for signs, for seasons, for days and years, let them be lights in the expanse of the heaven to give light upon the earth.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: And it was so.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: So that's like God says, Let there's things be, and it is so.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: But then there's this additional things.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: God says, Let the great light, the two great lights, the greater light rule the day, and the lesser light rule the night and the stars.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to rule over the day, over the night, and to separate the light from darkness, and God saw that it was good, and there was evening and morning the fourth day.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: Now, the only other things that are created that are given the obligation or the responsibility to rule are humans on day six.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: That's correct.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: So God created these things, we call them objects that are placed into the sky, the sun, the moon, the stars.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: We call them sun, moon, stars.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: But God created them in the heavens and then God told them to rule.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: So that vocabulary is important because God's going to reuse that vocabulary when he gets to day six and he makes man and he gives man the ability to rule.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: But when he gives man the ability to rule, he gives man the ability to rule over everything.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: So you have this, all right, these things were created to rule the day, the night, the scar, the style, the season.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: But then humans were given the ability to rule over all of creation.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: So it introduces a parallel, it introduces a theme that gets unpacked throughout the rest of scripture of the first thing created with the authority to rule, the second thing created with the authority to rule, and the second thing created with the authority to rule rules over the first.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: So we see that play out in the story of Jacob and Esau.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: We see that thing play out in the story of Joseph.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: We see that story play out all throughout scripture, where this second offspring ruling the first offspring.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: So it creates a theme for us.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: And so I think that what the text is describing for us is that the angels and all that go along with it, cherubim, seraphim, etc., are beings that were created on day four.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, along with their role to function in this particular capacity.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: Interesting.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: That's how I think they came to different thoughts.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: Uh this is, I wouldn't say hotly debated, but it's debated.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: And it's uh it's debated in a way that I think there's freedom and flexibility to meditate on because the explicit reality is scripture does not give us the exact moment when this happened.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Correct.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: So there's a lot of discussion.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: Um I think Job 38, specifically verses four through seven, um in assuming that his use of the word morning stars or sons of God is referring to angelic beings were already present and shouting for joy before the foundations of the earth is the foundations of the earth in the forming, days one through three, or the filling, day four, five, and six.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: It's debated.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: Um so some scholars believe, and they'll actually use some like a little nugget of truth from Exodus 20, uh, that Genesis uh holds all created things, created beings being created on day six.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: Uh in traditional Jewish views in the Midrash, there's there's differing opinions.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: There's some that would say um day two, heavens and the earth, yes, at that point.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, others, uh day five.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Um the in like we're gonna move in like to the uh 13th century now, you know, yet another right, a yet another one of the councils.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: The fourth Lateran Council in 1215 formally affirmed that God created spiritual, angelic, and corporal earthly creatures together at the same time, but didn't differentiate what day.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: Um so I think the short answer is we just don't know.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: We just don't know.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: We don't know with any certainty because that's not the point of the text that's correct as to when angels were created.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: But we know, but here's what we do know that they were created, they were created, and at some point in the cosmos history, a third of the angels there was in this row great rebellion were cast out.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Uh when do you think that happened?
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Um, I think that that happened in three stages throughout Genesis 1 to 11.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: I don't think it was one.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: I think that uh there are three points in chapters one through eleven where there are spiritual being rebellions taking place that are impacting this third of the host of heaven.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: I think the most significant moment is Genesis 3.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: I think that the serpent, I think, and we'll talk about this over the coming weeks.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: I think that the serpent in the garden was a spiritual being.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: I don't think it was a like a garden snake or a ball python.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: I think it was an actual spiritual being.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: And I think that Ezekiel 38, and we'll talk more detail about this later, is retelling the story of Genesis 3 about that serpent who was fallen.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: And I think in that moment, a large, we'll call it a faction of spiritual beings went with him.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: I think Genesis 6, the sons of gods and the daughter of men, is another moment where some rebelled against God.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: And I think Jude talks about those particular angels are still bound in chains in the abyss until the day of judgment.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: And then I think there's another mass of this rebellion taking place at the Tower of Babel, when the spiritual beings, God divides the nations amongst the spiritual beings and casts them out.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: So I think there are three moments in the story of Genesis 1 to 11 where these hosts of heaven rebel against God in some way.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: And I think Genesis 3 is the catalyst.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: So whether uh let's drill down into that meditatively speculative timeline.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: Uh whether whether we agree or not on were there three different moments, we would definitely agree that there was one central moment.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Yes, Genesis three.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: So uh I I think because we're scripture does not say specifically.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: Um These are all open-handed discussions.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: That's correct.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: I I don't believe that it was a 24-hour day in between what we read as Genesis 2 and Genesis 3.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: I don't either.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: I think Actually, I I do.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: Actually, I think that what happened on chapter 3 is day eight.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: Please tell me how you think that.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: I just because I don't think we would have lasted very long.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: I just don't think we could have made it very many days without going, hey, that's a pretty good piece of fruit.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: I think we'll and here's why it's undefined.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: But here's why I think it's more.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Uh I think Adam and Eve had enough time to fully embrace and experience that communion with the Lord, of walking with him in the eve in the evening to know how bad they had really messed up.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's fair too.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: So they had experienced that level of intimacy.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Now, how long that was, I don't know.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Was it because he lived hundreds of years?
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Correct.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: So it was that oh, we're gonna come back.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, here I got a teaser question for you in a minute.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Okay, but I I think though, however many days it was, yeah uh this great rebellion, if we want to use that analogy, um happened between Genesis 2 and Genesis 3.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: I think my I think that the temptation of Eve by the serpent is Satan's rebellion.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: I think that is the moment in which he is rebelling by the deception and the shrewdness that he is portraying with Eve, because he's ultimately saying you can be like God, which is ultimately the condemnation that Ezekiel makes about about this creature who is in Eden, who was cast down.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: And so my conjecture is that what we are seeing in Genesis 3 is the simultaneous rebellion of the deceiver, the Satan, the Satan, at the same time and moment in which Adam and Eve are also sinning, bringing sin in there into the world.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: I think those are the same event.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: Well, let's let's narrow this down though to something more concrete and anchoring.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: And truthfully more significant.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: So in the Garden of Eden, I'm putting the tree of life, the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: There's clear, clear freedom on what you can enjoy.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: There are clear limitations on what you can't do.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: The serpent, to be discussed in a couple weeks, what that serpent was.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Um the serpent comes, tempts them, he gives them some.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: This past Sunday, we looked at three specific lives.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: They disobey.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: Um because God's commandment was, hey, the when you do this, if you do this, you're you're gonna surely die.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: And the serpent says, Ah, you're not really gonna die.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: And they disobey, and they're not dead.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: So they're kicked out of the garden alive, right?
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: Out of those 900 or something years.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: Let's talk through more about what it means uh and the significance of this reality of death.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: Because here's here's I'll just to start the conversation.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: One perspective that we could take with this is um, and and we talked about this a little bit on Sunday, that uh there's pleasure in sin for a season, like I can do something now, and the consequences may not come till later.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: So, on one hand, the physical death, death certainly started physically in that moment, sure, but it's not till Genesis chapter five, verse five specifically, that we see that oh now Adam is dead.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: When we start to read the genealogies of his death, okay, well, he he actually did die.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Um so, and he ended up being 930 years old, but okay, he did literally die.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: Correct.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, what do you think though?
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: About this, no, on this day you shall surely die.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: What is that a picture of?
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: Um Genesis 2, we're told that God formed Adam out of the dust of the ground and breathed into him the breath of life, and he became a living soul.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: So, by definition, there I guess you could argue about it.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: There's the fact that Adam and Eve have the breath of God in their lungs, they are living, which means they are sustained by him and his breath.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: So I guess the question then is, well, what does it mean to die?
- 18:59unknown: Right?
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, is that ultimately kind of the question that you're asking?
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: What is death?
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: Because I think we can we can define death in a couple different ways.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: We can define it by lack of brainwave activity, that's a medical definition.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: We can define it by the heartbeating stop, that would be a medical definition.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: We could define it by the fact that you stop breathing, that would be both a physical and probably medical definition.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: But when you when you look at at the scriptures, death seems to have a different kind of definition as well.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: Like the wages of sin is death.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: Um, but God's gift is life, right?
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: And I don't, I don't think that that correlation between death and life in Romans that that scripture describes is the correlation between are you breathing, are you not breathing, right?
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: Um, I think there's something that is more directly connected to what does it mean to die?
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: And and I I think that there is physical death that comes about because of sin.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: And I think that I think that it's our I think that I would argue that had Adam and Eve not sinned, they would not have died.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Um I kind of I hold to that position, but then I also know there's a tree of life, and God says I need to kick them out of the garment, uh the garden, otherwise, if they take up the tree and eat, they will they will be in this, right?
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: So I could probably be are convinced that maybe they wouldn't have lived forever and death would have, but I think that's a byproduct of sin.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: But what I think sin is doing is more than a physical death.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: I think that what scripture seems to suggest is that death is the thing that is the separation between you and God.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: When we become separated from God, that is death by definition.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: A spiritual definition, probably, but the the ultimate definition, because if I can have eternal life, my body is now dead, but I have eternal life, what does that that mean?
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: I think that that means that although this physical body may cease to exist, the thing that that makes me me continues to exist, and it's an eternal life because I am eternally present with God.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: Because scripture also talks about the eternal death.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: And the eternal death is this death in which you are eternally separated from God.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: And so I think that when we we talk about this idea that God says in the day that you eat up, you will surely die.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: And then the serpent's sort of um response to that is you're not going to really die.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: I think we have to we have to shape and understand that in the fullness of that picture.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: Okay, let me insert an idea.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: Okay, and this may set the table where I think you want.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Go.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: So the Hebrew there is a really interesting collision of two words.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: You shall surely die.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: It's mot to mot.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: And basically what it does, it takes an infinite absolute and combines it with a finite verb.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: And I think it it suggests then a couple of things.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: There is an immediate spiritual death that happens.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: Your relationship with God is ruptured, broken immediately.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: And we see that transpired by okay, now you gotta leave this garden.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: There's a cherub in Hib flaming swords guarding it.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: So there's an immediate spiritual death.
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: There's also an immediate liability to physical death.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: And that sentence becomes binding for them and for all humanity.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: Through one man's sin, death entered into the world.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: That's correct.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: The delay from that immediate spiritual death and immediate liability to death to the Genesis 5-5 and 930 years later, the breath of life exited.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: That's a merciful delay.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: That is that is a picture of God's mercy, God allowing them to continue living on his breath, on his breath, on borrowed time for the hope of redemption narrative.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Which I think you would argue, and I'll just kind of setting the ball on the T for here, like where we see that to begin portrayed even in the garden through death and bloodshed.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: I you know, um a couple things that just sort of hit my head as you're talking.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: So God kicks them out of the garden, but when you read chapter four and following, God didn't stay in the garden.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: Like he's in the wilderness with them.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go with you.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: Right, right, right.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: So what has what has happened is this what has what has that what had happened was that the separation that has happened is they're no longer in this place where heaven and earth are overlapped.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: They're no longer in this presence where God dwells.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: God now goes and interacts with them in the place of the wilderness, right?
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Because we see in chapter four where God's having this conversation with Cain.
- 24:22unknown: Right?
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: Where's your brother?
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: What did you do?
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: What's going on?
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: Why hey, if you will do right, don't you know this like in this immediate invitation back to repentance?
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: So in the immediate aftermath of the fall in chapter three, we see that God doesn't abandon his people.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: And so although there is separation from God, God enters into the space with us in this wilderness.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: So I there's comfort in that reality.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's his grace and mercy.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: Um and then I also think that the deception of the serpent is you will not surely die.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: And I think that's a deception because God has promised, He said, He said in chapter two, in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: And so the question is, how are they still living 900 something years after that?
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: If God is true, you will die.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: And then the serpent says, you will not surely die, and then they sin, they eat of the garden, God kicks them out of the garden, and they're still living.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: Who's telling the truth?
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Is God telling the truth?
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Or is the serpent telling the truth?
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: It it sounds like from the story, if I just read the story, I may feel like the serpent was the one who was telling me the truth.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: They didn't surely die.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: Well, there's a there's a, and I don't know if I'm getting too far ahead.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: So if I am of what we're kind of talking through, at the end of chapter three, uh, let me find it here.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Chapter three.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: Uh verse, I can't find it.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: You talk it through and I'll look for it.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: At the end of chapter three, it's God puts on them the garments from this animal that He right?
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: They were clothed in fig leaves.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: Now they're clothed in sheepskin.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: In order for you to get the skin of an animal, something has to die.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: So what is introduced almost passively, it's not even explicitly stated.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: It's inferred almost by the text, by the language at the end of chapter three.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: What is implied is in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: But because of God's grace and mercy, he doesn't kill them.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: He kills something in their stay.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: And the Lord God, verse 21, the Lord God made for Adam and his wife garments of skin and clothed them.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: And clothed them.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: And what image comes to my mind is substitutionary atonement.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: God says, okay, in the day that you eat of it, you will die.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: The servant goes, You're not going to really die.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: And God says, No, you're going to die.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: But in your place, this lamb will die in your place, but I want you to be covered.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: And so he takes the skin of that animal and clothes them.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: And it reminds me of what it I can't help but think that when Paul is talking about justification and sanctification, right?
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: Being declared clear righteous and clothed in his righteousness and put on the righteousness of Christ, I can't help but imagine that this is on Paul's brain.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: That because of Christ, the Lamb of God, who was slain for us, and then Paul talks about putting on that garment.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: I can't help but think of this imagery because they took the skins and they were clothed with them.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: And so what God said in the day that you eat it, you will surely die.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: It happened, but it happened in a way that is not expected.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: And what happened was God, something died in their place, and the thing that died became the covering of their sin and shame and whatever, you know, they were telling they were naked, they were ashamed.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: God covered them in that thing.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: And I think I think the other noteworthy thing is yes, death comes immediately.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: God provides a substitute immediately.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: It's it's not just foreshadowing, it also is it is a substitute in that they had attempted to cover themselves already.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: And said, no, let me give you a better covering.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: And how many times in our life, through our sin, through our felt sense of separation from God, do we try to navigate and overcome that sense of emptiness and brokenness on our own?
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: Or we know we're doing what we shouldn't do because we also have believed the lie.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: We're walking in sin and in disobedience, and we're trying to hide it, cover up.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: We want to stay in the dark so that no one has to know about it.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: We're protecting our reputation, blah, blah, blah.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, and all of those attempts of self-covering fail.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: Fail.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: But it's the righteousness of Christ that lasts and endures forever.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: And so I think there's some teaser thoughts that I think I hope we can all be encouraged with, that we're getting glimpses of God's redemptive narrative from the start.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: But we're also getting even the reality of death, that is, immediate spiritual death, immediate liability toward death, immediate sense of substitution for death, that delayed mercy that you've even referred to uh through the conversations and God's clear presence with Cain and Abel in chapter four, um uh his grace extended mercy through Noah in chapter six, uh all through the wilderness journey, and even to this day, that I am with you, I am calling you to repentance, I'm inviting you to continue partner, but in order for that partnership to work, we've got to recognize your need for atonement.
- 30:07SPEAKER_02: And I've made a way for that too.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: And this is beautifully encouraging.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: It reminds me of the verse, I will never leave you nor forsake you.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: Even if I kick you out of the garden, I will go.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: That's right, that's right.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: So there's a lot of deep thoughts there, and uh I hope there are prompts for you to continue to meditate and discover.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: Um, again, this is week one in several weeks where we'll kind of peel back some additional layers about this idea of the fall and the curse that comes with it, but the hope that wraps around it and envelops it.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: Um, because we we don't Thessalonians says this even in the reality of our experience with physical death.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: Like we don't sorrow as those do with no hope.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: Like we've got hope in the physical and the spiritual and so we want to be infirmed by that.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, thanks for taking time to check out this uh week's episode.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: Um, again, I'm Ricky.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: This is Alan.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: This is the High Dog Podcast with Calvary Baptist Church.
