- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, Hello, it is Jeff here. I wanted to let
- 0:02Speaker 1: you know that this podcast episode was recorded on Wednesday,
- 0:06Speaker 1: August fourteenth, twenty twenty four so by the time you
- 0:09Speaker 1: hear this, some things may have changed here or there,
- 0:11Speaker 1: but we hope you enjoy the show. Welcome to the
- 0:47Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly
- 0:50Speaker 1: sports podcast show in the world, eleven years strong. We
- 0:54Speaker 1: got a great show for you this week. We're going
- 0:56Speaker 1: to get into some Olympics talk, and then we're certainly
- 0:59Speaker 1: going to get into the Philadelphia Phillies. My gosh, it
- 1:01Speaker 1: has been an incredibly, incredibly frustrating time as a Phillies
- 1:06Speaker 1: fan watching this team, although they did win against the
- 1:09Speaker 1: Miami Marlins ooh big whoop the Miami Marlins tonight as
- 1:14Speaker 1: we're recording this on Wednesday, August fourteenth. From there, we're
- 1:17Speaker 1: gonna get into some NBA talk actually, and some Sixers talk,
- 1:20Speaker 1: some offseason talk as we're looking forward to this upcoming season.
- 1:23Speaker 1: We're gonna get into some power rankings, which we usually
- 1:26Speaker 1: don't do on this podcast, but I thought it would
- 1:28Speaker 1: make for a good discussion, and then we're gonna close
- 1:30Speaker 1: things out with some Eagles talk. We got a great
- 1:33Speaker 1: guest what we're thrown down on the table, John Jansen
- 1:35Speaker 1: from Fox Sports Phillies The Gambler. He's going to join
- 1:38Speaker 1: us for some Eagles talk as well and some NFL storylines.
- 1:40Speaker 1: So looking forward to talking to John. I am Jeff
- 1:43Speaker 1: Warren and I'm here at my good buddy Len Hunt
- 1:45Speaker 1: Sticker Len two weeks in a row man. This is great, awesome.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Well for one of us is.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, I'm covering for it's on vacation this week,
- 2:01Speaker 3: and as he did for me a couple of weeks ago.
- 2:04Speaker 1: So yeah, well, I'm glad you're here, buddy. Oh my gosh,
- 2:14Speaker 1: I'll tell you, I think you really need to go
- 2:16Speaker 1: out golfing with me at some point. I think you'd
- 2:18Speaker 1: like it.
- 2:19Speaker 3: You have a better chance of seeing christ.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I can't put it any more plainly than that.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Our buddy Jay and I we're in a golf tournament
- 2:29Speaker 1: with our friend, our mutual friend, Josh. He runs the
- 2:32Speaker 1: Redding Hot Stovers annual golf tournament every year and the
- 2:37Speaker 1: proceeds from it go to baseball and softball scholarships in
- 2:41Speaker 1: the Berks County region of Pennsylvania. It'd be great a
- 2:45Speaker 1: should get out there on the course with Jay and I.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Just let me know what kind of check I need
- 2:51Speaker 3: to write, and I can just send that and then
- 2:53Speaker 3: not show up and then and then everybody wins.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Josh, if you're listening, you know, Len just said it
- 2:58Speaker 1: right there, right.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah, just don't involve me with any of the golf nonsense.
- 3:06Speaker 1: It'd be a good workout, I think for you. I
- 3:08Speaker 1: think I think you'd be invigorating after.
- 3:11Speaker 2: So it would like running or lefting weights or any
- 3:14Speaker 2: of the other.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Stuff at fair point, fair point right, Oh my gosh.
- 3:20Speaker 1: All right, well, let's get into the show. Let's get
- 3:22Speaker 1: into the show right off the bat. I gotta be
- 3:24Speaker 1: honest with you, buddy. I've been like, I don't want
- 3:26Speaker 1: to say down, but I've just kind of been like,
- 3:29Speaker 1: oh man, I really missed the Olympics.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, oh yeah, No, I'm the same way.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I I don't know necessarily what it has been in
- 3:37Speaker 1: terms of the feel the vibes. I was talking to
- 3:40Speaker 1: our guest on Opposition Territory this past week, Muki Alexander
- 3:43Speaker 1: from SB Nations Field goals about Seahawks, but we were
- 3:47Speaker 1: talking about the Olympics because he covered track and Field
- 3:51Speaker 1: this year, and he said it was an awesome experience.
- 3:54Speaker 1: It was great writing about it. And we're talking about
- 3:56Speaker 1: just the vibes this year, like the overall vibes of
- 3:59Speaker 1: the Olympics. Man, just positive stuff, Like there was just
- 4:03Speaker 1: positivity everywhere. And it's gonna sound hokey, Len, but it
- 4:07Speaker 1: was such a great feeling to be positive, to looking
- 4:12Speaker 1: at looking at things on my screen, looking at things
- 4:15Speaker 1: on my television, where people are rooting for each other,
- 4:20Speaker 1: even people who are competing against each other, you know,
- 4:22Speaker 1: you're rooting for each other. It's kind of it reminds
- 4:24Speaker 1: me of my daughter's sporting events that they're in where
- 4:28Speaker 1: you know, everybody's rooting for everybody, even though they're kind
- 4:30Speaker 1: of competing against each other, still rooting for each other.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Good vibes, positive vibes. I think it's what we need
- 4:38Speaker 1: at this particular point in time perhaps in the world,
- 4:41Speaker 1: and maybe it's just like this in America where my gosh,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I feel like the past ten years, whether you're on
- 4:47Speaker 1: social media or every you know, everything freaking comes back
- 4:51Speaker 1: to us in a political fashion all the time, and
- 4:53Speaker 1: it's always negativity. The positive good vibes that we got
- 4:56Speaker 1: from the Olympics, Len, I'd like, I'm actually really missing
- 5:00Speaker 1: it right now. And I think it's something that all
- 5:03Speaker 1: of us that love sports and sports entertainment as well.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I think we kind of crave that really kind of
- 5:09Speaker 1: haven't had it in a while. The Olympics really gave that.
- 5:11Speaker 2: To us well, and it's it's what it's supposed to be.
- 5:15Speaker 3: I mean, you mentioned, you know, the athletes cheering each
- 5:18Speaker 3: other on you you saw that a lot. I think,
- 5:19Speaker 3: especially with the like a lot of the women's gymnastic events,
- 5:24Speaker 3: that a lot. And you're just like, man, you know,
- 5:27Speaker 3: you're competing for metal with these people, but you got
- 5:29Speaker 3: to realize, like these girls they travel the world in
- 5:32Speaker 3: different competitions and they see all the same people, they
- 5:35Speaker 3: know everybody that they've been competing against for for years.
- 5:39Speaker 3: That it's a you know, it's a it's a fellowship
- 5:43Speaker 3: that they all have that they all know each other,
- 5:45Speaker 3: they're all I mean, I'm sure there's like with any
- 5:48Speaker 3: group of people, you know, there's maybe there's a couple
- 5:50Speaker 3: of people here and there that don't get along and
- 5:52Speaker 3: don't like each other, but by and large, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 3: these you're competing against your friends from around the world
- 5:58Speaker 3: and that's that rely showed itself there.
- 6:01Speaker 1: It definitely did well. I mean, the Olympics have been
- 6:04Speaker 1: over now for a few days, a lot of amazing
- 6:06Speaker 1: athletes like you were just saying that we saw a
- 6:08Speaker 1: bunch of memorable moments. I'm wondering when, like, what are
- 6:13Speaker 1: you going to remember most do you think from this
- 6:15Speaker 1: twenty twenty four Summer Olympic Games, Because I know I
- 6:18Speaker 1: have a couple things that I'm really gonna remember. What
- 6:20Speaker 1: are what are some of the most memorable aspects of
- 6:23Speaker 1: this Olympics for you that you're gonna really keep in
- 6:25Speaker 1: mind moving forward here?
- 6:27Speaker 2: Well, a couple things.
- 6:28Speaker 3: First off, something that I wonder if you'll mention it,
- 6:31Speaker 3: just because so the the opening ceremonies.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Okay, no, I wasn't planning on it, but go ahead.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Did you watch them?
- 6:39Speaker 1: I mean I didn't watch them as they were happening,
- 6:41Speaker 1: but seeing Gojira, yeah, okay, that's what we have seen live.
- 6:45Speaker 1: But I think you've seen them with me, right, I
- 6:47Speaker 1: mean we've seen somebody shows over the years. I mean
- 6:49Speaker 1: we've seen Gojeierra. They opened it for masted On. We
- 6:51Speaker 1: saw him one time, right, I believe So, oh yeah,
- 6:54Speaker 1: I mean, it's just it was fantastic.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Just like the whole thing with like just the head
- 7:00Speaker 3: this Marie Antoine says, going into them and like that,
- 7:03Speaker 3: and Opera Mexico was like and that was actually like
- 7:06Speaker 3: they were actually at the building where Marie ant when
- 7:09Speaker 3: it was held as a prisoner before she was executed. Yes,
- 7:13Speaker 3: and it's just like all this history and all this
- 7:15Speaker 3: cool stuff and then actually having a metal band like like,
- 7:19Speaker 3: can you imagine the super Bowl doing something like that?
- 7:22Speaker 3: So first off, kudos to France were saying, you know what,
- 7:25Speaker 3: this is one of our best bands.
- 7:26Speaker 2: We're we're doing it. We're throwing them out there like
- 7:29Speaker 2: you're you're getting metal. Like I couldn't believe I was
- 7:32Speaker 2: seeing it, and I.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Was like, oh my god, this is so that right
- 7:37Speaker 3: off the bat was like, damn, that's great.
- 7:39Speaker 1: It's like they put metal on the scene there, even
- 7:41Speaker 1: if it was for a few days and it kind
- 7:44Speaker 1: of tapered off, but the the again those positive vibes
- 7:47Speaker 1: of oh my gosh, this is something different. Okay, this
- 7:50Speaker 1: isn't necessarily what I've always thought metal to be. You know,
- 7:53Speaker 1: they're not you know, killing puppies and crap like that.
- 7:57Speaker 3: This is, which isn't really what you know a lot
- 7:59Speaker 3: of exactly you actually listen to it exactly.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Not everybody's worshiping satany.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Exactly, but yes, it was. It was fantastic to see
- 8:10Speaker 1: Metal getting their due after so long. I mean probably
- 8:14Speaker 1: for the first time ever, right.
- 8:15Speaker 2: First time ever, first first time I can remember.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, I think that's a great, great memory. I
- 8:20Speaker 1: mean for me, I mean from a sporting perspective, I'm
- 8:24Speaker 1: gonna have to go with with just the basketball that
- 8:27Speaker 1: we saw from the United States team, first and foremost
- 8:30Speaker 1: the US women's hoops dominance, and then the drama how
- 8:35Speaker 1: they come through winning the gold medal by one point
- 8:39Speaker 1: in a sixty seven to sixty six final score. That
- 8:43Speaker 1: that one point difference, and it existed only because the
- 8:46Speaker 1: French guard Gabby Williams her foot was on the line
- 8:49Speaker 1: when she banked in a really long two pointer as
- 8:52Speaker 1: time expired. But at the end of the day, US
- 8:55Speaker 1: women's hoops and basketball team they take the gold, and
- 8:59Speaker 1: then of course course Steph Curry and the US men's
- 9:03Speaker 1: basketball team, Lebron James Joel Embiid, I mean, holy cow,
- 9:08Speaker 1: Steph Curry, his his what would you call it? Other
- 9:11Speaker 1: worldly performance. And for decades, right, we've saient our decades,
- 9:14Speaker 1: well over a decade, I should say, as Sixers fans
- 9:17Speaker 1: and other NBA teams outside of Golden State have had
- 9:21Speaker 1: to watch Steph Curry basically dominate so many other teams
- 9:24Speaker 1: for so many years. But again, these guys coming together,
- 9:27Speaker 1: it was a fun, unifying moment I think for perhaps
- 9:31Speaker 1: US Americans to kind of rejoice in the fact that
- 9:33Speaker 1: Curry was on a different stage, and it was he
- 9:37Speaker 1: was ridiculous, even by his standards. I think, like those
- 9:40Speaker 1: two basketball teams for the United States, it was. It
- 9:44Speaker 1: was great to see it. I'm always gonna remember it.
- 9:46Speaker 3: I will say this like that the world is catching up.
- 9:50Speaker 3: I mean, like the French men's team, right, if you
- 9:53Speaker 3: look at their front line, yeah, I.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Mean they've got a lot of they've got a lot
- 9:56Speaker 2: of bigs.
- 9:57Speaker 3: If they ever get some good guards, i mean, watch out,
- 10:01Speaker 3: they're going to be really good.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Part of me wanted to think, Hey, Darryl Moury watching
- 10:07Speaker 1: some of this stuff, I was like, hey, Maury, why
- 10:08Speaker 1: aren't you over in France a little more here?
- 10:12Speaker 3: But and that's the thing like that, especially with the
- 10:14Speaker 3: women's see the women's basketball team is I mean, as
- 10:18Speaker 3: much as the.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Men have have been really good, I mean they don't
- 10:21Speaker 2: win all the time, but they usually do.
- 10:23Speaker 3: But the women have been absolutely just destroying everybody for
- 10:27Speaker 3: years and years and years. So to see them just
- 10:29Speaker 3: squeak by what, you know, a one point game in
- 10:31Speaker 3: the final is is. I mean, that's that's kind of
- 10:35Speaker 3: a shot across the ball, I think a little bit.
- 10:37Speaker 1: And the Britney Grinder story too, Oh yeah, just understandably
- 10:42Speaker 1: emotional winning a gold medal for a country she thought
- 10:47Speaker 1: she may never see again, you know what I mean
- 10:49Speaker 1: like that, that was pretty remarkable as well.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think, you know, while I didn't that
- 10:56Speaker 3: because they did a prisoner swap between America and Russia,
- 11:00Speaker 3: and I think that happened while while the Olympics were
- 11:04Speaker 3: going on going on, She's got that other thing like
- 11:07Speaker 3: kind of happening, which is, you know, certainly hits home
- 11:11Speaker 3: with her while all that other stuff is going on.
- 11:13Speaker 3: It had to be a strange, surreal thing for her.
- 11:19Speaker 3: But yeah, just a lot of the just the performances
- 11:22Speaker 3: in general. Katie Oldecki I was watching, I mean, she's
- 11:27Speaker 3: just incredible, and watching the it was the fifteen hundred
- 11:31Speaker 3: meter freestyle, which is like the I think the big
- 11:34Speaker 3: distance race in swimming, and you know, seeing her come
- 11:37Speaker 3: in and like nobody else is even in the frame,
- 11:40Speaker 3: like even they're panning out and nobody else and they're.
- 11:42Speaker 2: All down at the other end of the pool. She
- 11:44Speaker 2: like just got that far ahead of everybody.
- 11:48Speaker 3: That kind of dominant performance is just like, oh my god,
- 11:51Speaker 3: this person is still doing this after all these years
- 11:54Speaker 3: and doing it at that level. Yeah, It's just it's
- 11:57Speaker 3: cool seeing you know. It's one of those things that
- 12:00Speaker 3: makes you The Olympics in general, one of those things
- 12:03Speaker 3: that makes you go, I like watching all this stuff.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Why don't I seek this out when it's not the Olympics?
- 12:09Speaker 3: You know, yeah, exactly, why why don't like if there's
- 12:11Speaker 3: a track and you know, track and field meat on,
- 12:15Speaker 3: you know, and and that stuff is on every now
- 12:17Speaker 3: and again, Like why am I not tuning into that?
- 12:20Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean it's it's it's one of those things.
- 12:23Speaker 2: And I don't think that's just me.
- 12:24Speaker 3: I think it's a lot of people every four years
- 12:26Speaker 3: like why aren't Why aren't.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I watching this more? I like this stuff.
- 12:29Speaker 1: It was just great vibes overall, too. Let's not forget too.
- 12:32Speaker 1: And it's gonna be the last thing that I that
- 12:35Speaker 1: I bring up here with this particular segment on the
- 12:37Speaker 1: show here. But when the American women's gymnastics team they
- 12:43Speaker 1: won the all round title, it wasn't just that though,
- 12:47Speaker 1: And I think the one moment specifically with USA Gymnastics,
- 12:51Speaker 1: it wasn't even it wasn't even the US getting a gold,
- 12:54Speaker 1: but Simone Biles and Jordan Childs like playfully bowing to
- 12:58Speaker 1: Brazil's Rebecca and yeah on the all black podium.
- 13:04Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 13:05Speaker 3: It's great they've seen her at these competitions for years
- 13:09Speaker 3: and years and years, and you know, just and that's
- 13:12Speaker 3: the thing like get watching the Olympics, you get to
- 13:15Speaker 3: hear some of the backstories. So Androge was somebody that
- 13:18Speaker 3: has had a couple different you know, like I think
- 13:21Speaker 3: a cl tears, which you're a gymnast, I can't even imagine. So,
- 13:26Speaker 3: you know, like I said, these girls have been friends
- 13:28Speaker 3: for years, they've been on the tour for years. Knowing
- 13:30Speaker 3: that that person has been through that and seeing them
- 13:32Speaker 3: get a gold, like I'm not surprised by that at.
- 13:35Speaker 2: All, that they that they celebrate her in that fashion.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Kind, I'm so scared my daughter's gonna get the torn
- 13:41Speaker 1: acio at some point of the broken male. God.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Look, it's it's it's a tough support.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's. And it's Look, I've mentioned it before on
- 13:50Speaker 1: the show. I've mentioned it to you and Eric before.
- 13:53Speaker 1: She's been through physical therapy for a number of times
- 13:55Speaker 1: with her achilles and stuff because it was getting real
- 13:57Speaker 1: tight and we're like, all right, this thing's gonna snap
- 13:59Speaker 1: here a bit. She doesn't get physical therapy, but I
- 14:03Speaker 1: I'm just I'm like, yeah.
- 14:07Speaker 3: It's weird because you know, you want to see your
- 14:09Speaker 3: kid chase a dream that the parent and you was
- 14:11Speaker 3: always like, oh god, please don't get hurt.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Like yeah, I think it's always going to be like that.
- 14:16Speaker 1: But then when you see him perform, and it's like
- 14:18Speaker 1: at the Olympics, you know, whether it's you know, Simon
- 14:20Speaker 1: Bile's husband, you know who's NFL star, just sitting there
- 14:26Speaker 1: watching an amazing athlete in front of you, regardless of
- 14:31Speaker 1: if she's your your wife, but just hoping and praying
- 14:34Speaker 1: that everything goes well in terms of her health. And
- 14:38Speaker 1: it's it's like that. But then once you actually see
- 14:41Speaker 1: the hard work everything come to fruition within the course
- 14:45Speaker 1: of thirty seconds to a minute. You know, it's it's
- 14:48Speaker 1: all worth it. When when it actually happens, it's it's.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Yeah, And you saw that with obviously him being her husband,
- 14:54Speaker 3: that's but like you know, I'm just seeing like members
- 14:58Speaker 3: of the of the US men's basketball team, seeing Lebron
- 15:02Speaker 3: and kd like like coming to see her because she's
- 15:05Speaker 3: the best to ever do it at that sport and
- 15:08Speaker 3: just seeing them be kind of like in awe of
- 15:12Speaker 3: you know, someone whose sport is not you know, a
- 15:15Speaker 3: marquee sport. You know, it's not on all the time
- 15:18Speaker 3: like basketball is here. So yeah, that was cool to
- 15:20Speaker 3: see too.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Why can't we just have these good vibes all the time?
- 15:23Speaker 1: Why not? Well, I mean moving along here, I mean
- 15:28Speaker 1: we don't have the best vibes when it comes to
- 15:31Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Phillies here, right, vibes Jesus again again, Like
- 15:37Speaker 1: I mentioned earlier, the Phillies did win tonight Wednesday against
- 15:40Speaker 1: the Marlins. They split that two game series. Not saying much,
- 15:45Speaker 1: but my gosh, when they lost to the Marlins a
- 15:47Speaker 1: couple of days ago, Lynn, it was five nothing and
- 15:51Speaker 1: I'm thinking to myself, my god, I'm thinking to myself,
- 15:55Speaker 1: does Rob Thompson have to have the team meeting?
- 15:57Speaker 2: Like?
- 15:58Speaker 1: Does he have to have the team meeting? In fact,
- 15:59Speaker 1: one of the reporters, I believe, asked him about it,
- 16:02Speaker 1: and he said, yeah, I'll think about it. I think
- 16:04Speaker 1: about it all the time. There's a time to do it.
- 16:06Speaker 1: It depends on a lot of things. It depends on
- 16:07Speaker 1: the attitude and where I think the guy's minds are at.
- 16:10Speaker 1: And I think overall they're very solid right now. He
- 16:13Speaker 1: says that, and then the next day here Tyler Phillips,
- 16:17Speaker 1: just boy, I think that experiment might be over sooner
- 16:19Speaker 1: rather than later. But him giving up a Grand Slam,
- 16:23Speaker 1: and then we got Kyle Schwarber hitting a Grand Slam.
- 16:27Speaker 1: What a freaking game. The Wednesday night game was len
- 16:31Speaker 1: but my gosh, but that West Coast trip just we
- 16:36Speaker 1: were hoping. I was hoping that we would see a
- 16:40Speaker 1: little bit more from this team, a little bit more juice,
- 16:42Speaker 1: a little bit more fire, a little bit more offense.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And it's just it's rough. I mean, coming out of
- 16:48Speaker 1: this All Star break, this team has just been floundering
- 16:51Speaker 1: and it is so frustrating to watch them. I don't know.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I hope the Wednesday night game here against the Marlins
- 16:58Speaker 1: was the spark. That's what I hope. I think that's
- 17:00Speaker 1: what Philly's nation in general hopes. But I don't know
- 17:04Speaker 1: if that team meeting is going to need to happen.
- 17:06Speaker 1: From Rob Thompson sooner rather than later.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Well, it's tough because you know, you're talking about the
- 17:11Speaker 3: West Coast trip. You take two out of three from
- 17:13Speaker 3: the Dodgers, who you know, have been one of the
- 17:16Speaker 3: best teams in space for years now, and you're thinking, Okay,
- 17:19Speaker 3: now we're getting somewhere. And then you go into Arizona
- 17:22Speaker 3: and you win the first game of that series, and
- 17:25Speaker 3: then you drop the next three and you're kind of
- 17:27Speaker 3: you're like, Okay, we're right back where we were. Like
- 17:29Speaker 3: I thought taking two out of three from the Dodgers
- 17:31Speaker 3: was a good sign, Okay, we're maybe turning a corner here,
- 17:36Speaker 3: and then just they kind of fell apart there with Arizona.
- 17:39Speaker 3: I'm hoping that, like, you know, Okay, the Nats are
- 17:42Speaker 3: in town. This is a team they should handle. You know,
- 17:47Speaker 3: we'll see what happens there.
- 17:48Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 17:49Speaker 3: I mean you'd think they'd be able to take both
- 17:51Speaker 3: of them from Miami, but you.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Know not, Yeah, I don't know.
- 17:55Speaker 3: I mean, you have to still tell yourself, Okay, they're
- 17:59Speaker 3: sick and a half up in the division.
- 18:01Speaker 1: But you know that's the part at some point, yes,
- 18:04Speaker 1: but that's the bizarre part, Like we're all scared, we're
- 18:07Speaker 1: worried where we're at times, especially during that West Coast trip,
- 18:12Speaker 1: you know, a little downtrodden, especially after that Arizona series.
- 18:16Speaker 1: But then again you're like, oh, actually, they're not in
- 18:19Speaker 1: really a terrible position. I think good as the Braves
- 18:22Speaker 1: are crapping the bed. When they're crapping their.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Bed, Braves are just so banged up this year it's
- 18:27Speaker 3: not even funny. So it's I mean, I I don't
- 18:29Speaker 3: you know, who anything could happen, but this might be
- 18:32Speaker 3: one of those years. By the end of the season
- 18:34Speaker 3: they're just like flush it and move on to next season.
- 18:36Speaker 3: I mean, there's nothing you can do with all those injuries.
- 18:39Speaker 3: So I want to see what happens there. But you know,
- 18:41Speaker 3: the Phillies have.
- 18:42Speaker 2: To hold up their end of the bargain here. They
- 18:43Speaker 2: got to start.
- 18:44Speaker 3: You know, whatever funk this team has been in for
- 18:48Speaker 3: weeks now, since the all start break. They got to
- 18:50Speaker 3: get their heads out of their asses, and you know
- 18:53Speaker 3: they got to do something absolutely well.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Look, you're the baseball guy on the show. I read
- 18:57Speaker 1: a tweet tonight wanted a bound set off of you
- 19:00Speaker 1: from a gentleman I know follows the show. I follow
- 19:04Speaker 1: him on Twitter. His name is Bob Bonner. If you're listening, Bob,
- 19:07Speaker 1: I had to reference your tweet because I think there
- 19:09Speaker 1: may be something to this. He said. Here's my theory.
- 19:13Speaker 1: The Phillies won't be good again until the starting pitching
- 19:15Speaker 1: gets back to being dominant for the first three innings
- 19:19Speaker 1: of games. I think there's a little something there with that,
- 19:22Speaker 1: because we did see that consistently during the first half
- 19:24Speaker 1: of the season. We saw that dominance for the first
- 19:27Speaker 1: three innings, just three innings of dominant pitching. I think
- 19:32Speaker 1: if they get back to that, and it seems to
- 19:34Speaker 1: be it seems to be a tall order for them
- 19:38Speaker 1: to do that at this point, but maybe the ship
- 19:41Speaker 1: gets back to where we are hoping that it will
- 19:43Speaker 1: be again with the caveat that, you know, they are
- 19:45Speaker 1: up in the division by a significant amount of games.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Here.
- 19:49Speaker 1: I don't know, do you, what do you think about that,
- 19:51Speaker 1: that potential theory and that philosophy of those the first
- 19:55Speaker 1: three innings, if you're getting dominant pitching, things are gonna
- 20:00Speaker 1: gener really be okay here.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Well, I mean, yeah, I agree without one hundred percent.
- 20:04Speaker 3: But the question is, like, you know, look at the
- 20:06Speaker 3: first half of the season and look at how much
- 20:09Speaker 3: they got out of their starters. Yeah, and just the
- 20:12Speaker 3: fear for me, I agree with Bob saving that up.
- 20:14Speaker 3: With the fear for me is that like, did we
- 20:18Speaker 3: did we push them? Are they going to run out
- 20:21Speaker 3: of gas? Because right now it feels like maybe they've
- 20:24Speaker 3: hit a little maybe you know, you pitch your way
- 20:26Speaker 3: through it and they come back and they you know,
- 20:29Speaker 3: you start to see more of what you saw in
- 20:30Speaker 3: the first half of the season. But they did log
- 20:33Speaker 3: a lot of innings. I mean, they got a lot
- 20:35Speaker 3: of like quality starts, and you know, they pitched pretty
- 20:38Speaker 3: deep into games, you know, in the first half of
- 20:41Speaker 3: the season. I think that the rotation as a whole
- 20:43Speaker 3: pretty much did that. So do we are we at
- 20:47Speaker 3: a point where maybe they're a little bit gassed right now?
- 20:50Speaker 3: That's that's my concern. And how long does that take
- 20:53Speaker 3: to come through or do they come through it? So
- 20:56Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, I mean getting off to you know,
- 20:59Speaker 3: getting through that line the first time and maybe even
- 21:01Speaker 3: the second time and doing what you gotta do is
- 21:03Speaker 3: going to be huge.
- 21:04Speaker 2: But can they do it at this point?
- 21:06Speaker 1: Yeah? Good point? Good point. Wanted to end our Phillies
- 21:09Speaker 1: discussion there, You got anything else, buddy for the Phillies
- 21:12Speaker 1: before we get to the break here.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Just just keep repeating tonight. I don't know what to
- 21:18Speaker 2: tell you.
- 21:19Speaker 3: I mean, like, there's some guys in the in the
- 21:22Speaker 3: in the lineup, like Stott and guys like that.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I'm just like, what's happening here?
- 21:27Speaker 3: This is these guys are They don't look like the
- 21:30Speaker 3: same team from last year with some.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Of the young guys Bom excluded.
- 21:35Speaker 3: But you know, like Stott, I Marsh's kind of I
- 21:40Speaker 3: feel like he slipped a little bit as well. So
- 21:42Speaker 3: those guys need to kind of have a little bounce
- 21:45Speaker 3: back here.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Absolutely all right, Well, if you like our content, if

- 22:26Speaker 1: break right now. We'll be back in just a bit,
- 22:29Speaker 1: all right, Len, It's great to be back after hopefully
- 22:33Speaker 1: everybody heard the ads. I don't know if everybody heard
- 22:35Speaker 1: ads last week. I didn't, so thanks to our podcast
- 22:38Speaker 1: platform for that and uh we uh yeah, I know.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I wasn't too happy about that anyway. So we we
- 22:46Speaker 1: haven't gotten into much Sixers talk since free agency, but
- 22:50Speaker 1: we wanted to take a quick look at some of
- 22:52Speaker 1: the NBA power rankings before this season, you know, starts
- 22:56Speaker 1: before camp starts over a little ways off from that,
- 22:59Speaker 1: but just whether we feel like the Sixers kind of
- 23:01Speaker 1: deserve to be where they are at overall in the
- 23:04Speaker 1: NBA and the Eastern Conference power rankings here at this point.
- 23:08Speaker 1: So if you look at ESPN's power rankings of all
- 23:12Speaker 1: thirty teams, Philadelphia seventy six ers they have at number six.
- 23:17Speaker 1: If you look at the Eastern Conference power rankings, and
- 23:21Speaker 1: this is based on NBA dot com and their writer
- 23:25Speaker 1: John Schuman, Philadelphia seventy six ers all right number three
- 23:29Speaker 1: in the East. You have the Boston Celtics, New York
- 23:32Speaker 1: Knicks and then the seventy six ers, following them the
- 23:35Speaker 1: Pacers and then the Milwaukee Bucks. But going back to
- 23:40Speaker 1: lend the actual NBA overall NBA power rankings, Boston Celtics
- 23:46Speaker 1: number one, OKC is number two, the Timberwolves are three,
- 23:51Speaker 1: Knicks or four, the Dallas Mavericks coming in at the
- 23:55Speaker 1: fifth spot in the power rankings, and again seventy six
- 23:59Speaker 1: ers at number six got the Denver Nuggets down at seven,
- 24:01Speaker 1: in the Bucks at number eight. So, I don't know,
- 24:05Speaker 1: what do you think of these power rankings here? Do
- 24:07Speaker 1: you think they're fair to the Sixers, fair to other teams,
- 24:10Speaker 1: unfair as well? What are your thoughts I.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Think they're pretty fair to the Sixers.
- 24:15Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think that they're I mean, at least,
- 24:18Speaker 3: you know, according to what we saw last year. Obviously,
- 24:21Speaker 3: the Celics won the whole damn thing, and then you've
- 24:24Speaker 3: got the Knicks who knocked the Sixers out of the
- 24:26Speaker 3: playoffs and then added you know, Michael Bridges. So I
- 24:30Speaker 3: mean that's a big get right there. That's a huge get.
- 24:34Speaker 3: So you know, listen, I like what the Sixers did
- 24:37Speaker 3: in the offseason. You know, yes, they got the big
- 24:40Speaker 3: name and Paul George, but I like what they did
- 24:42Speaker 3: in terms of, you know, bringing back Andre Drummond, you know,
- 24:45Speaker 3: bringing in Caleb Martin.
- 24:47Speaker 2: I think those are going to be.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Two big pickups for them, you know, especially you know,
- 24:51Speaker 3: given the however many games that Joel Embiid is going
- 24:54Speaker 3: to miss because he always does, so you know you're
- 24:57Speaker 3: gonna need Drummonds for that stretch.
- 25:00Speaker 2: You know, we'll see.
- 25:01Speaker 3: I mean, it's just tough because you know, Embiid misses
- 25:06Speaker 3: a lot of games.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Paul George misses his fair amount of games too. So yeah, yeah,
- 25:11Speaker 2: I think they're going to be good.
- 25:12Speaker 3: But like to me, it's just like, okay, talk to
- 25:16Speaker 3: me and talk to me in April when we know
- 25:18Speaker 3: how healthy this team is. Like, yes, I think they're
- 25:21Speaker 3: going to make the playoffs. Yes, I think they're going
- 25:22Speaker 3: to be a good team. But you know, if if
- 25:25Speaker 3: Embiid's fighting a couple different injuries again, or if Paul
- 25:28Speaker 3: George is out, then you know, we're.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Kind of right back where we were.
- 25:31Speaker 3: So to me, they are behind the Celtics and the
- 25:35Speaker 3: Knicks at the bare minimum until they can prove otherwise.
- 25:39Speaker 2: I might even you know, yeah, the.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Stuff has to happen for them.
- 25:44Speaker 2: But maybe the Bucks.
- 25:46Speaker 3: I mean, there could be one of those teams in
- 25:47Speaker 3: the Central that you know, if you if you wanted
- 25:50Speaker 3: to put them in front of the Sixers, I would
- 25:52Speaker 3: listen to it. I don't I wouldn't necessarily agree with it,
- 25:55Speaker 3: but I think the Sixers are right where they should
- 25:58Speaker 3: be right now.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I'm glad you mentioned the Buck I was actually gonna
- 26:00Speaker 1: mention them too. I think while a lot of their rivals,
- 26:04Speaker 1: of course in the East, made some you know, splashy moves,
- 26:08Speaker 1: you know, the Bucks have had a quiet summer here.
- 26:11Speaker 1: I mean, of course, last year, as we know, you know,
- 26:13Speaker 1: trading for Dame Lillard on the eve of last season's
- 26:16Speaker 1: training camp. You know, they bring Doc Rivers in mid season.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I think they're just hoping that that continuity is going
- 26:24Speaker 1: to continue with the Honest and while they got eliminated
- 26:28Speaker 1: in the first round of the playoffs after a rather
- 26:32Speaker 1: up and down season, I don't know if number eight
- 26:34Speaker 1: for them is necessarily fair From the ESPN overall list
- 26:38Speaker 1: of thirty NBA teams. I mean, I don't know. I
- 26:43Speaker 1: might put Milwaukee. I don't know, I might put them
- 26:46Speaker 1: over the over Denver. To be honest with you, the
- 26:49Speaker 1: Honest is just so good.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Dame is good they are, But I mean they got
- 26:53Speaker 3: a I think they made a mistake in hiring Doc.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Rivers, absolutely.
- 27:00Speaker 2: I think I think there's some that's needs to be dumped.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Yeah, you think that's why they're kind of they're like fully.
- 27:06Speaker 3: A uh A contender in the East again. I think
- 27:10Speaker 3: I just I just think he's always gonna hold a
- 27:12Speaker 3: team back. I don't I don't know why they're eighth.
- 27:15Speaker 3: You know, I am looking at uh I mean looking
- 27:17Speaker 3: at the teams right behind them. You know, you've got
- 27:19Speaker 3: Indiana who you can make a case for there, yea Cleveland.
- 27:24Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 27:24Speaker 3: If they're quite at that level. And then you got
- 27:27Speaker 3: some teams in the West, Okay, you know, Grizzlies. You know,
- 27:30Speaker 3: if you get a if you get a full season
- 27:32Speaker 3: of John Morant back, you know, you know, you got
- 27:35Speaker 3: a decent starting line up there. Maybe I would maybe
- 27:38Speaker 3: you could put them ahead, But you know, they're I
- 27:41Speaker 3: think this is pretty fair, you know, by and large.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Isn't it amazing how the Brooklyn Nets over the past
- 27:48Speaker 1: few seasons have just nosedived. It's amazing. Yes, I mean, yes,
- 27:54Speaker 1: complete cratering after having the talent that they had just
- 27:58Speaker 1: a few years ago on that team, and and and
- 28:02Speaker 1: it started with the poison. Well I don't know if
- 28:04Speaker 1: it started with the poison, but the Ben Simmons poison.
- 28:08Speaker 1: I'll tell you, this team is just just down the toilet. Man.
- 28:13Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's it's hard to believe. I mean, they
- 28:17Speaker 3: just complete pre fall. I mean they are, they are.
- 28:20Speaker 2: They're starting over from complete scratch here.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yep, yep. Absolutely, all right, You got anything else for
- 28:25Speaker 1: this particular story before we get into some Eagles talk?
- 28:29Speaker 2: No, I don't.
- 28:30Speaker 1: All right, well, let's get into that Eagles talk and again, folks,
- 28:33Speaker 1: we're gonna be talking to John Jansen from Fox Sports
- 28:36Speaker 1: Phillies The Gambler. He's gonna join us for some NFL
- 28:38Speaker 1: and Eagles talk as well after the break. But Lena
- 28:43Speaker 1: been thinking about throughout training camp, watching that first preseason game.
- 28:46Speaker 1: When a lot of folks are gonna be listening to
- 28:48Speaker 1: this podcast. It might be after the second Eagles preseason game.
- 28:52Speaker 1: But I feel like I'm getting a little concerned with
- 28:55Speaker 1: players who are not at practice right now, players who
- 28:58Speaker 1: aren't in these preseason in games. And I'm talking about
- 29:01Speaker 1: guys like Cooper de Gene and Paris Campbell. You know
- 29:05Speaker 1: that that wide receiver wide receiver three position, who is
- 29:08Speaker 1: that going to be If the depth is not there
- 29:10Speaker 1: at wide receiver. If AJ Brown or Devonte Smith get injured,
- 29:14Speaker 1: that is a huge issue. In Cooper Degene, I mean
- 29:18Speaker 1: a high draft pick, yeah, second round draft pick, but
- 29:20Speaker 1: still you know there are high hopes for him coming
- 29:23Speaker 1: in with the type of excitement that he had coming
- 29:26Speaker 1: out of college. He hasn't been able to get on
- 29:28Speaker 1: the field because of nursing his injury as well with
- 29:31Speaker 1: the believe as hamstring. I'm I'm I'm getting a little
- 29:36Speaker 1: concerned about not seeing these guys who I think could
- 29:39Speaker 1: be very valuable pieces to this team, and they're just
- 29:42Speaker 1: not getting the reps. They're not getting the reps at practice,
- 29:44Speaker 1: they're not getting the reps in these preseason games here.
- 29:47Speaker 1: I don't know what your level of concern is, but
- 29:49Speaker 1: I'm I'm a bit concerned here.
- 29:52Speaker 3: I would say the Paris Campbell thing concerns me a
- 29:54Speaker 3: little bit more. I mean, if this is a guy
- 29:56Speaker 3: that you're thinking is going to be your number three receiver,
- 30:00Speaker 3: I mean, that's a big deal that that's an important position.
- 30:04Speaker 3: So I mean, to me, that is a bigger concern.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Cooper de Gene, I mean, yes, I mean obviously, you know,
- 30:11Speaker 3: he's a guy that you know, we thought was, you know,
- 30:14Speaker 3: for it going to be a first round talent, you know.
- 30:17Speaker 3: But you know, they've got Sleigh, They've got Quinn and Mitchell,
- 30:20Speaker 3: They've got Rogers like you know, they They've I feel
- 30:24Speaker 3: like they've fortified that position a little bit. Where it
- 30:26Speaker 3: seems like the Eagles have had kind of a history
- 30:29Speaker 3: here of rookies that, you know, maybe the first season
- 30:33Speaker 3: are hurt a little bit or slowed a little bit,
- 30:35Speaker 3: or it seems like that's happened to them, you know,
- 30:38Speaker 3: especially with like the Georgia players over the past couple
- 30:41Speaker 3: of years. Here, maybe this is a case of that again,
- 30:45Speaker 3: and you know, maybe he.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Eventually finds his footing, but maybe it's a bit of
- 30:48Speaker 2: a tumultuous rookie year I think.
- 30:51Speaker 3: I mean, unless they're playing on him starting at safety
- 30:54Speaker 3: or something, which I don't have any indication of that,
- 30:57Speaker 3: but I feel like, I don't know, that's more we're
- 31:00Speaker 3: of a hit that they could absorb. Yeah, that makes
- 31:02Speaker 3: sense than than Campbell would be right.
- 31:04Speaker 1: I think Cooper Degen is going to be getting back
- 31:06Speaker 1: on the field from my understanding, sooner rather than later. Here.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Probably by the time that people are hearing this, he
- 31:11Speaker 1: may be back on the field and be a full
- 31:13Speaker 1: participant in practice. But still, I just I want these
- 31:17Speaker 1: young guys to see some time on the field. We
- 31:19Speaker 1: talked about that even a couple months ago. I remember
- 31:21Speaker 1: you and I talking about the fact that we want
- 31:23Speaker 1: to see draft picks actually getting some playing time, not
- 31:26Speaker 1: just preseason, but in the regular season as well, because
- 31:29Speaker 1: if you don't get that playing time, you're just not
- 31:31Speaker 1: going to be able to develop. And I think something
- 31:34Speaker 1: that Nick Sirianni in this regime has been pretty good
- 31:36Speaker 1: about doing is actually playing rookies over these past few
- 31:40Speaker 1: seasons here, you know, every now and again, it's been
- 31:42Speaker 1: it's been good to see. But I remember, specifically Lynn
- 31:45Speaker 1: you talking about the fact that you know, we want
- 31:47Speaker 1: to see Quinnon Mitchell getting some some valuable snaps during
- 31:51Speaker 1: the course of the regular season. I want to see
- 31:53Speaker 1: Cooper Degen getting those valuable snaps as well, because these
- 31:56Speaker 1: guys are the future of the secondary for the philadel
- 32:00Speaker 1: Fiegles in a lot of different ways. So I look,
- 32:03Speaker 1: by the time people are listening to this, maybe it's
- 32:05Speaker 1: a moot point, maybe h Cooper Degene is going to
- 32:07Speaker 1: be back fully participating, But I don't know. I just
- 32:11Speaker 1: I want it all now, buddy, I want it all now.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I know you're you're already.
- 32:15Speaker 3: I can already tell you're getting you you're getting apped
- 32:18Speaker 3: up here, Yes, I can. I can already see it.
- 32:22Speaker 1: I really am.
- 32:23Speaker 3: So Yes, this week they have well I know they're
- 32:28Speaker 3: practicing with the Patriots right now.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Is that who they're playing in a in a preseason
- 32:33Speaker 2: game this week?
- 32:33Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 32:34Speaker 3: Okay, that's okay, that's what I figured. So you got them,
- 32:37Speaker 3: and then you got the Vikings. What is that the fifteenth?
- 32:42Speaker 3: He said, Thursday night.
- 32:43Speaker 2: I don't mean Thursday.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Night, get yeah, I mean the second preseason game is
- 32:46Speaker 1: Thursday night. Some folks are probably going to be hearing
- 32:49Speaker 1: this after that game, so.
- 32:50Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, well, I'm just I don't care about anybody else.
- 32:53Speaker 3: I'm more selfishly looking at will I be able to
- 32:56Speaker 3: watch this game or do I have to go to
- 32:58Speaker 3: better Oly so I can get up for work.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I'll be able to at least catch a little bit
- 33:01Speaker 2: of that.
- 33:02Speaker 3: So yeah, I mean I'm interested in seeing, you know,
- 33:04Speaker 3: some of these guys as well. You know, hopefully we're
- 33:06Speaker 3: kind of get into the portion. I know, this one
- 33:09Speaker 3: less preseason game now, so you know, I guess you
- 33:11Speaker 3: have to speed things up a little bit. But you know,
- 33:13Speaker 3: I do want to see some of these guys and
- 33:16Speaker 3: you know, see them get reps. You know, I know
- 33:17Speaker 3: we're not going to see Hurts or you know, people
- 33:20Speaker 3: like that, but you know, I want to see names
- 33:22Speaker 3: that I know, not like the six string linebacker.
- 33:25Speaker 2: You know that that's never going to make the team.
- 33:28Speaker 3: So you know, I want to see people I know
- 33:29Speaker 3: and see people that I can potentially get excited about here.
- 33:33Speaker 1: I think Jeremiah Trotter Junior is going to be a
- 33:35Speaker 1: contributor on this team in some way, shape or form.
- 33:38Speaker 1: I'm not just saying that things. Yeah, yeah, I mean
- 33:41Speaker 1: his pursuit has been In that first preseason game, his
- 33:45Speaker 1: pursuit to the ball was very, very impressive. I mean,
- 33:48Speaker 1: his motor he just kept going, you know, he got
- 33:52Speaker 1: he got stopped in his tracks on one particular play,
- 33:54Speaker 1: ran from I don't know, I want to say sideline
- 33:56Speaker 1: to sideline, but it was he was a little bit
- 33:59Speaker 1: out of position, but he wanted to make that tackle.
- 34:01Speaker 1: He made it. It was really impressive to see just
- 34:03Speaker 1: how he has been a force in the middle of
- 34:06Speaker 1: the field. And that's what we've been wanting from this linebacker. Corlin.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Oh yeah, no, absolutely.
- 34:11Speaker 3: I mean linebacker is a position I know I've harped on,
- 34:14Speaker 3: you know, forever. So it seems like, you know, they
- 34:18Speaker 3: they've finally, you know, gotten you know, a number of
- 34:21Speaker 3: names in there that are interesting and you know we're
- 34:24Speaker 3: going to see what happens with them. So yeah, I
- 34:27Speaker 3: don't know, I think that they've done a good job
- 34:29Speaker 3: before buying that position.
- 34:30Speaker 2: On the field.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Absolutely, all right, well, buddy, I'm gonna let you go here.
- 34:34Speaker 1: You got any final thoughts before we head out here.
- 34:37Speaker 3: I don't I, like I said, I do want to
- 34:39Speaker 3: tune into this game a little bit tomorrow night. And
- 34:41Speaker 3: you know, I feel like I've been kind of you know,
- 34:44Speaker 3: I've been reading stuff, but I haven't actually seen anything
- 34:47Speaker 3: as far as the preseason.
- 34:48Speaker 2: So, like, you know, I don't want to go into.
- 34:50Speaker 3: The first game of the season and be like, I
- 34:53Speaker 3: didn't watch any of this, you know, right right, I
- 34:55Speaker 3: don't know what's going So I'm interested in kind of
- 34:58Speaker 3: seeing who looks good here and and you know who
- 35:01Speaker 3: I can officially start to worry about.
- 35:03Speaker 1: All right, very good. I'm gonna be watching the game
- 35:05Speaker 1: as well. And again, some folks maybe listening to this
- 35:10Speaker 1: after that second preseason game, we're certainly gonna be talking
- 35:13Speaker 1: more about this Philadelphia Eagles team and subsequent podcast episodes,
- 35:16Speaker 1: So subscribe if you are new to listening to us,
- 35:19Speaker 1: and let your friends and family know about the Philadelphia
- 35:22Speaker 1: Sports Table podcast show. Would greatly appreciate that. Buddy, I'm
- 35:24Speaker 1: gonna let you go. We are gonna take a quick break,
- 35:27Speaker 1: pay some bills here, We're gonna be back in just
- 35:29Speaker 1: a bit, We've got a great discussion coming your way

- 35:35Speaker 1: we are back and let's get to some more NFL
- 35:38Speaker 1: and some Eagles talk here. Got a great guest, that's
- 35:41Speaker 1: what we're thrown down on the table and now on
- 35:44Speaker 1: the table, joining us this week from Fox Sports Phillies,
- 35:50Speaker 1: the Gambler and you can also follow him on the
- 35:52Speaker 1: Twitter slash x at Jay Jansen thirty four. He is
- 35:56Speaker 1: a great, great follow and I'm so excited to have
- 35:59Speaker 1: him on the show for the very first time we
- 36:00Speaker 1: got John Jansen.
- 36:01Speaker 4: How you doing, buddy, Yeah, thanks for having me. I've
- 36:03Speaker 4: been seeing you have all of all the guests that
- 36:06Speaker 4: I like getting on my show the lines change, you
- 36:08Speaker 4: also have had them on, so I'm like, man, I
- 36:09Speaker 4: really want to get on the show too. It seems
- 36:11Speaker 4: like a good time.
- 36:12Speaker 1: So yeah, absolutely appreciate you taking the time, buddy, because
- 36:15Speaker 1: like it's it's a busy time. It's a busy time
- 36:17Speaker 1: for US Philly sports fans and US Eagles fans as
- 36:20Speaker 1: we're in the midst of training camp here. But before
- 36:23Speaker 1: we get into some Eagles talk, I wanted to get
- 36:25Speaker 1: in some NFL storylines with you that you know we've
- 36:27Speaker 1: been following. I know you guys have been following as well.
- 36:31Speaker 1: And one particular team and situation right now that I
- 36:34Speaker 1: find to be very fascinating because you look at all
- 36:37Speaker 1: thirty two teams in the NFL, they all have front offices.
- 36:40Speaker 1: They all have quote professionals working there. And sometimes I
- 36:44Speaker 1: say that word loosely professionals because you look at front
- 36:47Speaker 1: offices like the Eagles. You look at front offices like
- 36:51Speaker 1: perhaps some other teams, maybe the Arizona Cardinals perhaps, or
- 36:55Speaker 1: just a bunch of other teams that have been in
- 36:56Speaker 1: the basement for quite some time, and you say to yourself,
- 36:59Speaker 1: why can you all learn from front offices that are
- 37:03Speaker 1: actually doing some good things? And what I'm talking about
- 37:06Speaker 1: right now is the New York Jets. I'm talking about
- 37:08Speaker 1: the Jets and the situation that they are dealing with
- 37:11Speaker 1: in terms of Hassan Reddick. Look, last year, Jets, they
- 37:14Speaker 1: had to deal with Aaron Rodgers, all that hype and
- 37:16Speaker 1: then him getting injured in the first game of the season.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Now they're dealing with this Hassan Reddick situation, and it's
- 37:22Speaker 1: truly baffling to me. John he wanted a new contract
- 37:25Speaker 1: here in Philly. It's one of the reasons why he's
- 37:28Speaker 1: not with the Eagles anymore. Now. His on the field
- 37:31Speaker 1: career is somewhat on the line this season because he's
- 37:33Speaker 1: holding out and the Jets are saying, no, you got
- 37:35Speaker 1: to get to camp here or you're going to be fined.
- 37:38Speaker 1: I don't know, buddy, what do you make of this
- 37:40Speaker 1: situation in this storyline here? It's amazing to me that
- 37:43Speaker 1: folks can let this happen in the NFL, even to
- 37:45Speaker 1: this day.
- 37:46Speaker 4: Yeah, it's amazing because I think what those teams kind
- 37:48Speaker 4: of get bamboozled buy a lot. And I think the
- 37:50Speaker 4: other team that really fits this narrative is Jacksonville. I've
- 37:53Speaker 4: seen jackson Will do it a lot, and they did
- 37:55Speaker 4: it very specifically with Calvin Ridley. So what these teams
- 37:58Speaker 4: do They think they get a play because something happens
- 38:01Speaker 4: to him, like Kelvin Ridley was the betting thing with
- 38:03Speaker 4: the Son Reddick. It's the contract. They get him and go, well,
- 38:06Speaker 4: we got a great player, we did good, we did
- 38:08Speaker 4: our part, we got the great player in and then
- 38:11Speaker 4: they go, you know what, whipe Brahn's clean. That was
- 38:12Speaker 4: good process. We had a good process of getting this player,
- 38:15Speaker 4: but then the way that makes it the bad process
- 38:18Speaker 4: is they don't figure out what to do afterwards. Because
- 38:21Speaker 4: if you're going to get in a son Reddick, you
- 38:23Speaker 4: make sure you pay the guy because you want it
- 38:24Speaker 4: to be worth the price that you're going to pay
- 38:26Speaker 4: to get him. Jacksonville did the same thing. It's good
- 38:29Speaker 4: that they got Calvin Ridley, but then they let him
- 38:31Speaker 4: go yet was the contract too high that he got
- 38:33Speaker 4: with Tennessee? Sure, but why would you initially get the player,
- 38:36Speaker 4: initially give all those draft picks away and for your
- 38:39Speaker 4: young quarterback to get a good receiver just to let
- 38:41Speaker 4: him walk away? Like that's bad process to me. That's
- 38:44Speaker 4: not thinking ahead. That's not thinking, Okay, we get this player,
- 38:46Speaker 4: and then what it's all, we get this player, we're good,
- 38:49Speaker 4: We're fine. It's not building a team. It's bad process.
- 38:52Speaker 4: So I think a lot of those times it is.
- 38:54Speaker 4: It's what I would call bad process and teams not
- 38:56Speaker 4: thinking ahead, thinking more than just well, we got to
- 38:58Speaker 4: get the good players. Know what do you do with
- 38:59Speaker 4: those players?
- 39:00Speaker 1: Exactly?
- 39:00Speaker 4: That's where the teams like the Jets really seem to
- 39:02Speaker 4: fall PLoP.
- 39:02Speaker 1: They really do you look at the New York Giants
- 39:05Speaker 1: in terms of the hard knocks offseason that many of
- 39:07Speaker 1: us watch too. You look at that front office and
- 39:09Speaker 1: you say to yourself, you know, a lot of us
- 39:11Speaker 1: are Monday morning, you know, coaches and quarterbacking, you know,
- 39:14Speaker 1: during the course of the season, and those of us
- 39:16Speaker 1: that follow the NFL very closely, you know, at times
- 39:19Speaker 1: in a joking way, some people are serious about it.
- 39:21Speaker 1: We will say, you know what, I could do that job.
- 39:23Speaker 1: I look at the New York Giants, John, and I'm like,
- 39:26Speaker 1: I could actually do what's going on here. It's amazing, man.
- 39:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it's another team that thinks like we're doing good process.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:32Speaker 4: We signed the quarterback that we thought was good, and
- 39:34Speaker 4: we didn't sign the running back because running backs aren't
- 39:36Speaker 4: as valuable without kind of doing some self evaluation of hey,
- 39:39Speaker 4: the running back was the only reason why in twenty
- 39:41Speaker 4: twenty two we were any good. The quarterback was okay,
- 39:44Speaker 4: anybody could have done I think what Daniel Jones did
- 39:46Speaker 4: in that season. But what made them good? What made
- 39:49Speaker 4: them at least a playoff team and winning a playoff
- 39:51Speaker 4: game really with Saquon Barkley. Yes, but the NFL tells
- 39:55Speaker 4: you that you have to sign the quarterback. You can't
- 39:57Speaker 4: do that. But good teams evaluate themselves over and over again.
- 40:00Speaker 4: I think a team with good process is also San Francisco,
- 40:02Speaker 4: and nobody wanted an off ball linebacker and Fred Warner
- 40:04Speaker 4: they got the off ball linebacker. Nobody wanted Baltimore really
- 40:07Speaker 4: good team that also good process. Nobody wanted the safety
- 40:09Speaker 4: Kyle Hamilton in the draft. Yeah, because safeties aren't valuable.
- 40:12Speaker 4: What happened with them? They get the safety and the
- 40:14Speaker 4: safety is one of the best and one of the
- 40:15Speaker 4: main reasons why their defense was so good last year.
- 40:17Speaker 4: So it's teams that can self evaluate themselves a lot
- 40:20Speaker 4: better instead of just going, well, this is how other
- 40:21Speaker 4: teams do it, and this how we should do it. No,
- 40:23Speaker 4: it's teams that valuate themselves better than anyone else could
- 40:26Speaker 4: and knowing, hey, we could really find something special here.
- 40:29Speaker 1: I really wanted Kyle Hamilton in Philadelphia. I gotta tell
- 40:31Speaker 1: you that right now.
- 40:32Speaker 4: I did not, And I will tell you what I
- 40:34Speaker 4: am fine was saying. I am absolutely wrong. I was
- 40:36Speaker 4: fine with Jordan Davis, but I was completely wrong. Kyle
- 40:38Speaker 4: Hamilton was a game change.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Look, I'm fine with Jordan Davis too. I'm happy about it.
- 40:42Speaker 1: You know, we'll see what happens this year. We're getting
- 40:44Speaker 1: to some Eagles talking just a bit here, folks, but
- 40:46Speaker 1: as we're moving along with the conversation here, John, last
- 40:49Speaker 1: year in the NFL really was I believed, and I
- 40:53Speaker 1: talked about it a lot with my co hosts and
- 40:55Speaker 1: other guests. Last season, it really was the year of
- 40:57Speaker 1: the defense. We saw a number of defensive u and
- 41:00Speaker 1: it's just really come alive in twenty twenty three and
- 41:03Speaker 1: look offense in the NFL. They still performed well, but
- 41:07Speaker 1: last year really seemed like defenses were catching up to
- 41:10Speaker 1: the offensive play on the field consistently, game after game,
- 41:14Speaker 1: division between divisions as well. Overall NFL scoring was down
- 41:18Speaker 1: last year, So I wonder if we'll continue to see
- 41:20Speaker 1: this heading into the twenty twenty four season. Wanted to
- 41:23Speaker 1: get your thoughts on this and where the direction of
- 41:26Speaker 1: I guess football play is really going in the league. Yeah.
- 41:29Speaker 4: I hope there is kind of a CounterPunch that teams
- 41:31Speaker 4: make because a lot of it has been and there's
- 41:33Speaker 4: been a lot of data behind this, and I'm trying
- 41:36Speaker 4: to read back and forth and I was reading this
- 41:38Speaker 4: a couple of years ago, and so when you mentioned it, it
- 41:40Speaker 4: was like, h maybe this is finally the year teams
- 41:42Speaker 4: can CounterPunch, because I think Kansas City did it. It's
- 41:44Speaker 4: a lot of too high safety what teams and it's
- 41:46Speaker 4: not just too high safety, but I think the philosophy
- 41:49Speaker 4: is and why everybody when they were criticizing Jonathan Gannon
- 41:51Speaker 4: for this, everybody in the league was starting to do
- 41:53Speaker 4: it is what they're trying to do is make sure
- 41:55Speaker 4: they're not giving up big plays. Explosive plays in the
- 41:57Speaker 4: NFL are down, down, down, down, like this kind of
- 42:00Speaker 4: continual trend. If you look at average depth of target,
- 42:03Speaker 4: it's been going down each year. If you look at
- 42:06Speaker 4: explosive plays that are happening, it's gone down each year.
- 42:08Speaker 4: Teams are really just content on kind of high volume
- 42:11Speaker 4: but not high chunk, high aggressive plays. And so the
- 42:15Speaker 4: teams I think that are really good at try at
- 42:17Speaker 4: offense actually run the ball a lot more because you're
- 42:19Speaker 4: keeping the defense honest and you're able to get more
- 42:21Speaker 4: explosive plays. I'm looking at the top five from last
- 42:24Speaker 4: year in terms of rush EPA, which is estimated points added.
- 42:28Speaker 4: The top five teams were San Francisco, Buffalo, Baltimore, the
- 42:32Speaker 4: Eagles and also the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions are
- 42:35Speaker 4: number six, So that's probably six of the top offenses
- 42:39Speaker 4: you think about, and a lot of the reason why
- 42:40Speaker 4: they're able to kind of have these explosive plays, and
- 42:43Speaker 4: even why the Eagles were still able to have explosive
- 42:45Speaker 4: plays throughout the season is because they're so good I
- 42:47Speaker 4: think running the ball right and because the run is
- 42:50Speaker 4: able to suck some safeties in. It's keeping the defense
- 42:52Speaker 4: honest and that's giving you more explosive play, so you're
- 42:54Speaker 4: not having to rely on fifteen to sixteen play drives,
- 42:57Speaker 4: which Jacksonville. Again, I always go back to jackson I
- 43:00Speaker 4: think for the worst of it, Doug Peterson, it's really
- 43:02Speaker 4: fifteen sixteen played drives and relying on Trevor Lawrence to
- 43:05Speaker 4: be absolutely perfect in every read all the time. It's
- 43:09Speaker 4: really hard to do. So yeah, I think offenses are
- 43:12Speaker 4: starting to figure that out. I think some of the
- 43:13Speaker 4: best coaches in the NFL have figured that out. Sean McVay,
- 43:16Speaker 4: I think really good offensive mine. He's number eight in
- 43:18Speaker 4: rush EPA, or at least the Rams were last year.
- 43:21Speaker 4: So I think the teams. I think there is a CounterPunch.
- 43:23Speaker 4: It's running the ball more. It's just how many teams
- 43:25Speaker 4: are willing to kind of do that, because again, conventional thinking,
- 43:28Speaker 4: at least in the past few years, have been going
- 43:30Speaker 4: past the ball, pass the ball, pass the ball. When
- 43:31Speaker 4: really running the ball, I think it's been a big
- 43:33Speaker 4: advantage for a lot of teams.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Absolutely, Where are the scales gonna go this year, folks?
- 43:37Speaker 1: That's gonna be interesting to follow, a great storyline to
- 43:40Speaker 1: follow as we're moving along here. You know, we're only
- 43:43Speaker 1: in the second week of this preseason here, John and
- 43:45Speaker 1: everyone is really trying to get a good feel for
- 43:48Speaker 1: how many teams may perform this year right out of
- 43:51Speaker 1: the gate. So two part question for you here, we're
- 43:54Speaker 1: gonna go overrated and underrated teams really heading into this
- 43:57Speaker 1: NFL season. Before we get to some Eagles talk here,
- 44:00Speaker 1: who do you think is the most overrated team heading
- 44:02Speaker 1: into this season? And why?
- 44:04Speaker 4: Yeah, overrat It's probably gonna have to be the Jets
- 44:06Speaker 4: for me, Yeah, because you're lying. Yeah, we talked about
- 44:09Speaker 4: the Jets and so, you know, bad process all that,
- 44:11Speaker 4: But it's just they I don't know what they're gonna
- 44:13Speaker 4: do with edge rusher Son Reddick doesn't play because Bryce
- 44:16Speaker 4: Huff was a very effective pass rusher. I'm very happy
- 44:19Speaker 4: to have Bryce Huff with the Eagles as a pass rusher,
- 44:22Speaker 4: but they sent him away because they got a Son Reddick.
- 44:24Speaker 4: Son Reddick's not there. And their defense is really a
- 44:26Speaker 4: big calling card for them last year, and I find
- 44:29Speaker 4: that to be somewhat volidile. I know Sauz Gardner is
- 44:32Speaker 4: going to be amazing, so they're gonna have really good
- 44:34Speaker 4: defensive back play, but I don't know about the rest
- 44:36Speaker 4: of that defense. But it's heavily reliant on a forty
- 44:39Speaker 4: year old quarterback who just came back from a torn achilles.
- 44:41Speaker 4: I know Aaron Rodgers is great, He's amazing, but sometimes
- 44:44Speaker 4: these injuries, and not just those injuries, but some of
- 44:47Speaker 4: their physical attributes declined so quickly and after a major
- 44:51Speaker 4: injury like this. I'm not saying that Aaron Rodgers is
- 44:54Speaker 4: gonna look like Peyton Manning at the end of his career.
- 44:57Speaker 4: I am saying that I don't know if he's gonna
- 44:58Speaker 4: be good enough to elevate that team to where they
- 45:00Speaker 4: need to be. Gee. I think the Jets, they're getting
- 45:02Speaker 4: a lot of attention because they have Aaron Rodgers. I
- 45:04Speaker 4: think the coaching staff's bad. I think the offense is bad.
- 45:07Speaker 4: I think they have a couple of good players on
- 45:08Speaker 4: the offensive side of the ball, Breasee Hall and Garrett Wilson,
- 45:11Speaker 4: But I just don't know if a quarterback like Game
- 45:13Speaker 4: Rodgers is going to be enough to prop up the
- 45:14Speaker 4: rest of that.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's a really great answer to New
- 45:17Speaker 1: York Jets and the same regard and same division, I
- 45:19Speaker 1: should say the Buffalo Bills. I mean, I think all
- 45:22Speaker 1: of us are looking at that team to possibly take
- 45:25Speaker 1: some steps back after losing Von Diggs, that receiving core.
- 45:28Speaker 1: How they look right now. I mean, Dalton Kincaid going
- 45:31Speaker 1: into his second year, I'm not one hundred percent sure
- 45:33Speaker 1: they're gonna be able to put the offensive receiving on
- 45:36Speaker 1: his shoulders necessarily. That's going to be a really interesting
- 45:39Speaker 1: team to watch, for sure. Yeah, will be.
- 45:41Speaker 4: I just it's Josh Allen is fantastic. He's really found
- 45:44Speaker 4: this way of using him in this kind of offense
- 45:47Speaker 4: around him that really works. And a lot of what
- 45:49Speaker 4: Joe Brady did actually last year by the end of
- 45:51Speaker 4: the season is actually run the ball as I just
- 45:53Speaker 4: said Buffalo is number two in rush EPA, and a
- 45:56Speaker 4: lot of that's Josh Allen too. So Josh Allen is
- 45:58Speaker 4: a big part of why they're able to keep teams honest.
- 46:01Speaker 4: But it's a great offense that works with his skill set.
- 46:03Speaker 4: They spread everybody out that could still run the ball,
- 46:05Speaker 4: and they need to. I thought James Cook was good
- 46:07Speaker 4: last year and now I think they they do have
- 46:09Speaker 4: the CounterPunch, they can go to the run, they can
- 46:11Speaker 4: go off of play action. I think they were really
- 46:13Speaker 4: good off of play action when they did use it.
- 46:14Speaker 4: I think Mina Kimes just highlighted that not too long ago.
- 46:17Speaker 4: So yeah, Buffalo to me just has that. It's not look.
- 46:20Speaker 4: Losing digs is a big thing, and there were a
- 46:22Speaker 4: lot of wholesale changes Buffalo made, but they're still just
- 46:26Speaker 4: a really high level of play in that offense with
- 46:27Speaker 4: a quarterback as good as josh Awe.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Flip side of the coin, the most underrated team heading
- 46:33Speaker 1: into this season here, John, what are your thoughts there,
- 46:35Speaker 1: because I have a couple in mind. What's your team
- 46:38Speaker 1: that you're looking at in terms of the most underrated
- 46:40Speaker 1: heading end of the year.
- 46:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like I'm a broken record with this.
- 46:43Speaker 4: I'm saying the Arizona Cardinals over and over and over
- 46:46Speaker 4: and over. I think Kyler Murray's finally in an offense
- 46:49Speaker 4: that isn't a child's offense, which is why Washington. I'm
- 46:52Speaker 4: surprised people are so high because I can't say overrated
- 46:55Speaker 4: for Washington because there's still nobody's calling for them to
- 46:58Speaker 4: win the East. Nobody's calling for them to be, you know,
- 47:00Speaker 4: this amazing team. But I think there are some people
- 47:02Speaker 4: that think they can sneak into a wild card. Cliff
- 47:03Speaker 4: Kingsbury was awful as a head coach and awful as
- 47:06Speaker 4: an offensive kind of play caller for Kyler Murray. A
- 47:09Speaker 4: lot of the issues were really scheme and not personnel. Personnel.
- 47:12Speaker 4: Kyler Murray played well. DeAndre Hopkins was good. So now
- 47:15Speaker 4: I think Kyler Murray is in a really good offense
- 47:17Speaker 4: and an offense that does like to run the ball.
- 47:19Speaker 4: They ran the ball well last year. They have a
- 47:20Speaker 4: good running back, but also now a studd in Marvin
- 47:22Speaker 4: Harrison Junior. They have Greg Dorts. They have a really
- 47:24Speaker 4: good tight end in Trag McBride. It's an offense that
- 47:26Speaker 4: I'm intrigued by and with a quarterback that I think
- 47:29Speaker 4: is a lot better than people think because of again
- 47:33Speaker 4: the limitations he had in that offense. Jonathan Gannon did
- 47:36Speaker 4: a pretty good job of that defense last year. They're
- 47:38Speaker 4: not talented, they're not overly amazing, but he got some
- 47:41Speaker 4: really interesting play out of them. You can get somebody
- 47:44Speaker 4: like CJ. Stroud was talking to Nate Tice, I think,
- 47:46Speaker 4: at the Super Bowl this year and was breaking down
- 47:48Speaker 4: a play and he was really crediting Arizona on some
- 47:51Speaker 4: really odd looks that they were giving him Schematically, That
- 47:54Speaker 4: to me is telling me Jonathan Gannon's in his back,
- 47:56Speaker 4: He's figuring things out with this defense, and as long
- 47:58Speaker 4: as they can get turnovers. Really the big thing with
- 48:00Speaker 4: me is and I think it was for the Eagles
- 48:01Speaker 4: in twenty seventeen Jim Schwartz, it wasn't you know, don't
- 48:05Speaker 4: give up any yards, don't be the number one defense
- 48:07Speaker 4: in the NFL. Jim Schwartz wasn't want to be aggressive
- 48:08Speaker 4: because I want turnovers. Turnovers is a really big thing
- 48:11Speaker 4: in the NFL. But you can't guess it. You can't
- 48:13Speaker 4: guess either way if you're gonna give away or take away.
- 48:16Speaker 4: It's a hard thing to guess, but I think if
- 48:17Speaker 4: Arizona can win the turnover battle, and I think they
- 48:20Speaker 4: will on offense, but create some turnovers on defense, and
- 48:22Speaker 4: with the way Gennan's defense is, I think he can
- 48:24Speaker 4: that team can absolutely make a wild Card. I think
- 48:26Speaker 4: they're gonna be I hate to say contender in the
- 48:29Speaker 4: NFC West because San Francisco might be really good, the
- 48:31Speaker 4: Rams might be really good, but they're gonna be just
- 48:33Speaker 4: as good as those teams, and I think forty nine
- 48:35Speaker 4: ers do take a step back. So I'm very interested
- 48:37Speaker 4: in the Cardinals.
- 48:38Speaker 1: Interesting enough, because my team that I think could potentially
- 48:42Speaker 1: be underrated is actually the Seattle Seahawks. I go back
- 48:46Speaker 1: to a conversation I had on our Opposition Territory podcast
- 48:49Speaker 1: this past week with a reporter who covers the Seattle
- 48:53Speaker 1: Seahawks and goals. I think it's field goals Sea. Yes, yeah,
- 48:56Speaker 1: it was Mookie Alexander there, great guy, and we're talking
- 49:00Speaker 1: about this team, and I really think if that offensive
- 49:02Speaker 1: line is able to stay consistent throughout the course of
- 49:06Speaker 1: the season, the Seattle Seahawks could actually do so, I think,
- 49:10Speaker 1: and I think Geno Smith too, is he's not the
- 49:12Speaker 1: greatest quarterback in the world. But I think he is
- 49:15Speaker 1: an underrated talent based on where he was a couple
- 49:17Speaker 1: of years ago. Last year, again, the offensive line was
- 49:19Speaker 1: absolutely horrendous. Didn't help the team out at all. Look,
- 49:23Speaker 1: I know everybody you know has their opinions about Dan Arlovsky.
- 49:26Speaker 1: You know, he did put out some quarterback ball placement
- 49:29Speaker 1: rankings recently and Gino Smith ranked number seven. And I
- 49:32Speaker 1: think in pocket management too, Gino Smith has been a
- 49:35Speaker 1: top ten quarterback. There's something to be said about that.
- 49:38Speaker 1: I think the Seattle Seahawks could be that sneaky underrated
- 49:41Speaker 1: team this season.
- 49:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm interested in them, and I think they just
- 49:45Speaker 4: got over the offensive coordinator from Washington, Michael Penix was
- 49:48Speaker 4: there last year. Yeah, and really the big thing with
- 49:50Speaker 4: them now a lot of it is they had two
- 49:52Speaker 4: NFL wide receivers, so you're gonna get a lot of
- 49:54Speaker 4: plays downfield. But Michael Penix didn't have like this overly
- 49:56Speaker 4: high completion percentage. Really, what Michael Penis had was deep
- 49:59Speaker 4: down the play field. He was very aggressive, he was
- 50:02Speaker 4: very good deep ball. Gino Smith can do it. I
- 50:04Speaker 4: just don't think Seattle's offense was necessarily schemed for it.
- 50:09Speaker 4: They have the talent to do it. Like they have
- 50:12Speaker 4: really good wide receivers all over the place, one through three.
- 50:14Speaker 4: They have a really good running game. I just don't
- 50:16Speaker 4: know if they really got as much as they could
- 50:18Speaker 4: have out of the way Gino Smith's been playing. Maybe
- 50:20Speaker 4: that's just in Gino's nature, and so Gino isn't going
- 50:23Speaker 4: to always be an ultra aggressive quarterback. But I feel
- 50:25Speaker 4: like I see ultra aggressive throws from him all the time,
- 50:28Speaker 4: and if you're able to get him better plays on
- 50:30Speaker 4: the field, Yeah, they have the offensive talent to do it.
- 50:32Speaker 4: So Seattle, to me, it's really why San Francisco I
- 50:35Speaker 4: think they might be in trouble. They're trying to figure
- 50:37Speaker 4: out all these things, and here comes Seattle. I think
- 50:40Speaker 4: is a really good team that I have some interesting
- 50:42Speaker 4: kind of offensive minds coming in and just an interesting
- 50:45Speaker 4: coach overall coming in Arizona. I think it's been was
- 50:48Speaker 4: awesome at the end of last year. And they have
- 50:50Speaker 4: this quarterback that's healthy now in Kyler Murray. The name
- 50:52Speaker 4: of the Rams if they're healthy. Matthew Stafford to me,
- 50:54Speaker 4: is becoming one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
- 50:57Speaker 4: So yeah, that's a very tough Division and I love
- 50:59Speaker 4: most of the team, but Seattle and Arizona I think
- 51:01Speaker 4: are the two that I'm most I.
- 51:03Speaker 1: Love your take, man, I love your take on what's
- 51:04Speaker 1: gonna happen with that NFC West for sure. And again, folks,
- 51:07Speaker 1: we're talking to John Jansen from Fox Sports Phillies the Gambler,
- 51:12Speaker 1: great great content and follow him on Twitter. He's got
- 51:16Speaker 1: great content over there as well at Jay Jansen thirty four.
- 51:19Speaker 1: And as we're moving along with a conversation here, let's
- 51:22Speaker 1: get into some Eagles talk. We got to get into
- 51:23Speaker 1: some Eagles talk because I'm just we're also hyped with
- 51:26Speaker 1: this team right now. We really are from everything we're seeing,
- 51:30Speaker 1: and we should be absolutely Look this coming Thursday, here
- 51:34Speaker 1: is their second preseason games. Some folks are gonna be
- 51:36Speaker 1: listening to this after the game, but I really wanted
- 51:40Speaker 1: to see how this linebacker group performed in the first game.
- 51:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna see how this linebacker group performs in the
- 51:47Speaker 1: second game as well, because I think we all are
- 51:49Speaker 1: generally concerned about the middle of the field heading into
- 51:52Speaker 1: this season. So from what we have seen thus far,
- 51:55Speaker 1: whether it's in camp, the games we've seen here thus far,
- 51:58Speaker 1: what are your thoughts when it comes to these linebackers
- 52:01Speaker 1: and who really may have the best impact for this
- 52:03Speaker 1: team here in twenty twenty four.
- 52:05Speaker 4: I mean, I think it's something that's gonna be kind
- 52:07Speaker 4: of a work in progress all season. It's not gonna
- 52:09Speaker 4: be set. I think they're gonna be moving around at times.
- 52:12Speaker 4: And I think because mainly the problem might be is
- 52:14Speaker 4: Jeremiah Trotter Junior might be one of your better linebackers,
- 52:18Speaker 4: and I think you're gonna have to play him, But
- 52:19Speaker 4: I don't know if they're gonna be willing to start
- 52:21Speaker 4: him in game one week one when they're in Brazil
- 52:24Speaker 4: against Green Bay is a really good offense. But Jeremiah
- 52:26Speaker 4: Trotter Junior, while he is not I think the most
- 52:29Speaker 4: gifted linebacker. You know, everybody is comparing them, Well, he's
- 52:33Speaker 4: the same as the Kobe Dean. I don't think he's
- 52:35Speaker 4: the same. He's the same maybe body type wise. I
- 52:37Speaker 4: think he's a little bit bigger, But they play the same.
- 52:39Speaker 4: They're not fast, they rely on instincts, but I think
- 52:42Speaker 4: Jeremiah Trotter Junior has better instincts in all areas of
- 52:45Speaker 4: the field. I think he covers really well. I thought
- 52:47Speaker 4: he showed that in college. I thought he was good
- 52:49Speaker 4: against blitz, I thought he was good against the run,
- 52:51Speaker 4: you know, I thought he was good in so many
- 52:52Speaker 4: different situations, and it just see him pop. I know
- 52:55Speaker 4: it's a preseason game. You don't want to take too
- 52:57Speaker 4: much away, but even when to Kobe Dean playing, I
- 52:59Speaker 4: did not see him pop off the screen as much
- 53:02Speaker 4: as Jeremiah Trotter Junior does. And I love to see
- 53:04Speaker 4: that from a linebacker. I love to see him in
- 53:06Speaker 4: the backfield making plays, making hard hits, being able to
- 53:09Speaker 4: blow up kind of I saw him blowing up offensive
- 53:11Speaker 4: linemen in the backfield, being able to recognize plays, but
- 53:15Speaker 4: then using his body physically to be able to blow
- 53:17Speaker 4: up those plays. I think the Kobe Dean has trouble
- 53:19Speaker 4: with that. Jeremiah Trotter Junior's a little bit bigger. I
- 53:21Speaker 4: think he also plays just way more physical than the
- 53:24Speaker 4: Kobe Dean does. I'm a big fan of Trotter Junior.
- 53:27Speaker 4: He did everything at Clemson. Again, I know some of
- 53:30Speaker 4: the physical traits, like the combine type stuff isn't necessarily
- 53:34Speaker 4: where it needs to be, but everything on tape and
- 53:37Speaker 4: everything the way you see him play just completely goes
- 53:40Speaker 4: against that. He is a much more physical linebacker than
- 53:43Speaker 4: I think his size is, and I think he's much
- 53:45Speaker 4: more instinctual than just being a run stopper. He can
- 53:47Speaker 4: play all areas of the field, and I'm very excited
- 53:50Speaker 4: by that because I think he fits more of the
- 53:52Speaker 4: all that TJ. Edwards was than kind of what to
- 53:54Speaker 4: Kobe Dean.
- 53:54Speaker 1: That's very interesting too, And how many times do we
- 53:57Speaker 1: say throughout the NFL looking at teams, looking at various
- 53:59Speaker 1: players and talent, Okay, they did this at the Combine,
- 54:02Speaker 1: or they did this at the Senior Bowl, and oh
- 54:04Speaker 1: my gosh, they're doing this now in camp in their
- 54:06Speaker 1: first year. Holy cow, we didn't expect this player to
- 54:09Speaker 1: be doing this. We see it all the time in
- 54:11Speaker 1: the NFL. So I think it goes back to the
- 54:13Speaker 1: fact that we can't always take combine numbers and what
- 54:17Speaker 1: we see out of Indianapolis. You know it's not gold
- 54:20Speaker 1: all the time.
- 54:21Speaker 4: Yeah, you want athletes, you want really good apps, right,
- 54:25Speaker 4: I think what the COMMA gives you, and I love
- 54:27Speaker 4: the relative athletic score. I actually had him on my podcast,
- 54:29Speaker 4: Kent Lee Platty. There's a really good job of putting
- 54:31Speaker 4: together the relative athletics score. And if a guy's an
- 54:33Speaker 4: explosive athlete, that's great. But sometimes, like especially at a
- 54:36Speaker 4: position like linebacker, Yes, I want my linebackers to be
- 54:39Speaker 4: a little bit bigger, but it's not as necessary in
- 54:42Speaker 4: today's NFL as it was previously. As I said, a
- 54:44Speaker 4: lot of teams aren't running the ball back. Then you
- 54:46Speaker 4: have to stop Prieste Holmes, Jamal Lewis. You know all
- 54:49Speaker 4: those guys, and those guys are huge, right they running backs.
- 54:51Speaker 4: Nobody's at size anymore. So I think that is that's
- 54:55Speaker 4: something I'm willing to give up. And I think you
- 54:58Speaker 4: can rely a little bit on linebacker of what is
- 55:00Speaker 4: guy showing you on tape? How good is he? Does
- 55:02Speaker 4: he play physical? Is he able to win against big
- 55:04Speaker 4: offensive lineman? And if he's able to do that, which
- 55:06Speaker 4: jerebih Trotter Junior showed, you know, I think that can
- 55:09Speaker 4: translate on Sundays, he doesn't have to be an explosive athlete. TJ.
- 55:12Speaker 4: Edwards wasn't really an explosive athlete coming out of Wisconsin,
- 55:15Speaker 4: and TJ. Edwards is probably the best equals linebacker, at
- 55:17Speaker 4: least middle linebacker we've seen in quite a while.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Quite a while, absolutely well, a theme that we've been
- 55:22Speaker 1: talking about on this podcast platform and on the show
- 55:25Speaker 1: here for the past couple months. John has been you know,
- 55:28Speaker 1: what is this defensive line poise to potentially do or
- 55:32Speaker 1: perhaps not poised to do this year? And I have
- 55:35Speaker 1: to tell you, like, it's been a while since he's
- 55:37Speaker 1: been on this team, but I miss Javon Hargrave, I
- 55:39Speaker 1: really do. And I know it's been a while again
- 55:42Speaker 1: since he's been here in Philly, but losing him was
- 55:44Speaker 1: tough in terms of that interior part of this defensive line.
- 55:48Speaker 1: Losing Redicalick we were talking about earlier has really stunk.
- 55:51Speaker 1: I think BG is getting older, you know, Josh Sweat,
- 55:55Speaker 1: we don't necessarily know from a consistency standpoint, you know,
- 55:57Speaker 1: where he's going to be week fifteen, six teen seventeen.
- 56:00Speaker 1: At this point, it's really been up and down for
- 56:03Speaker 1: this unit over the past year. Here. We have a
- 56:06Speaker 1: lot of young talent I think that really needs to
- 56:08Speaker 1: make their mark this year and there's just a lot
- 56:11Speaker 1: of unknowns. So how are you assessing where the defensive
- 56:13Speaker 1: line is at in Do you have any similar concerns?
- 56:16Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a lot of unknowns, but I can't say
- 56:19Speaker 4: it's a bad reason to let go of those guys
- 56:21Speaker 4: because you get rid of us On Reddick for a
- 56:24Speaker 4: twenty five year old who's showing not only decent good
- 56:27Speaker 4: promise as an edge rusher, but a guy in Bryce
- 56:29Speaker 4: Heff who's showing like elite promise right right, Like this
- 56:31Speaker 4: guy is showing things that not a lot of guys,
- 56:33Speaker 4: especially an Ed Rudgers show. So that's great. You get
- 56:36Speaker 4: a twenty five year old that can do that. You
- 56:37Speaker 4: get somebody like Jalen Carter, who I think can play
- 56:40Speaker 4: at a near Fletcher Cox level. But it's gonna take
- 56:42Speaker 4: some time to do that. And you're right, it sucks
- 56:44Speaker 4: that Hargrave left, but because I loved Hargrave, I think
- 56:47Speaker 4: they haven't been able to replace that production on the inside.
- 56:49Speaker 4: But I think Jalen Carter can do it. I think
- 56:51Speaker 4: the combination of him and Jordan Davis can do it.
- 56:54Speaker 4: It's not for a lack of effort, right, I think
- 56:56Speaker 4: they've done the right thing in trying to replace those
- 56:58Speaker 4: guys get younger in those positions. I think if drafted
- 57:00Speaker 4: the right players, especially Jalen Carter, I think was a
- 57:03Speaker 4: phenomenal draft pick. Really couldn't miss up mess up with
- 57:06Speaker 4: that one, and really I thought he showed a lot
- 57:08Speaker 4: of elite promise. It's just kind of it's a little
- 57:10Speaker 4: bit of a hope in prayer we're used to right
- 57:13Speaker 4: now with the Eagles. A lot of these guys are established,
- 57:16Speaker 4: a lot of the guys on offense are established, a
- 57:17Speaker 4: lot of the guys in the secondary are established players.
- 57:20Speaker 4: So we're looking for something established. But I think it
- 57:23Speaker 4: is a good thing that there's a lot of promising,
- 57:26Speaker 4: elite kind of traits we see from their young players,
- 57:30Speaker 4: and they can be better than maybe what a Son
- 57:32Speaker 4: Redick was, better than what Hard gave, was better than
- 57:34Speaker 4: even what Fletcher Cox was not saying they will be,
- 57:36Speaker 4: but there's that promise that they can and I think
- 57:39Speaker 4: that's something that you know, Howie Roseman is relying on,
- 57:41Speaker 4: relying on good process of getting these guys and getting
- 57:44Speaker 4: talented players, and I think it will come to fruition
- 57:46Speaker 4: this year, especially from Jalen Carter. I think Jalen Carter
- 57:49Speaker 4: is going to have a massive year. Just because the
- 57:51Speaker 4: end of the year didn't go his way. I think
- 57:52Speaker 4: a lot of that was teams keyed in on him
- 57:54Speaker 4: and the defense around him wasn't as good.
- 57:56Speaker 1: Or so many double teams as well, so many double
- 57:58Speaker 1: teams down the stretch.
- 57:58Speaker 4: Truly, Ayen Carter, I think is gonna get a lot
- 58:01Speaker 4: more help now just from the defense being better overall,
- 58:04Speaker 4: and he's gonna be I think he's going to be
- 58:05Speaker 4: a force in the interior defensive line. So, yeah, it's concerning,
- 58:09Speaker 4: but it's not anything I'm too. It's not like the Eagles,
- 58:12Speaker 4: for a lack of effort, haven't tried to fix it. Absolutely,
- 58:14Speaker 4: I think they've really brought in the right pieces to do.
- 58:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:16Speaker 1: Absolutely, it's gonna be fun watching that particular storyline and
- 58:20Speaker 1: unit develop throughout the course of this season. So before
- 58:23Speaker 1: I let you go here, John, I wanted to just
- 58:25Speaker 1: dive into one last topic with you. I'm wondering, what's
- 58:28Speaker 1: that one Eagles storyline that you're really gonna be following
- 58:31Speaker 1: until the end of camp, you know, outside of whether
- 58:34Speaker 1: or not Jake Elliot's actually able to make extra points here.
- 58:36Speaker 1: I'm kidding, of course, what's that one storyline on this
- 58:40Speaker 1: Eagles team or even within the organization that you're really
- 58:42Speaker 1: gonna be keeping tabs on closely from now until the
- 58:45Speaker 1: rest of camp.
- 58:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:47Speaker 4: I think for me, it's just gonna be Kellen Moore's
- 58:48Speaker 4: offense and not if they're doing well. You know, I
- 58:51Speaker 4: know a lot of people love it. I don't care
- 58:53Speaker 4: about what Jalen Hurts training camp stats are. I don't
- 58:55Speaker 4: know if that he's eighty percent.
- 58:56Speaker 1: You know.
- 58:56Speaker 4: I think the only thing you can really tell from camp,
- 58:58Speaker 4: because the Eagles are great in camp last year and
- 59:00Speaker 4: they ended up losing six of the last seven, and
- 59:02Speaker 4: they were terrible at the end of last year. So
- 59:03Speaker 4: there's no indicator that practice or any of these things
- 59:06Speaker 4: are going to get you. But you can tell what
- 59:07Speaker 4: kind of offense they are going to be, especially with
- 59:09Speaker 4: a new offensive coordinator and just hearing the things that
- 59:11Speaker 4: I have and continuing to see what that offense, the
- 59:14Speaker 4: evolution of that offense looks like with Kellen Moore, some
- 59:16Speaker 4: of the things that he makes Jalen Hurts do. I
- 59:18Speaker 4: like that we are kind of seeing still running plays
- 59:21Speaker 4: for the quarterback because I think that still is going
- 59:22Speaker 4: to be a huge part of Jalen Hurts game and
- 59:24Speaker 4: one of the things that helps him a great quarterback.
- 59:26Speaker 4: So I think that's a big thing. You know, what
- 59:28Speaker 4: kind of different things they're going to do under center,
- 59:30Speaker 4: What is their running game going to look like? How
- 59:31Speaker 4: do they utilize Barkley. I saw Barkley, I think, on
- 59:33Speaker 4: a wheel route catch a touchdown against the Patriots in
- 59:36Speaker 4: their first joint practice. That's something I'm interested in. So yeah,
- 59:39Speaker 4: I'm continuing to see what the evolution of it because
- 59:41Speaker 4: the Eagles offense clearly last year the biggest reason why
- 59:44Speaker 4: they didn't do well offensively and why things kind of
- 59:46Speaker 4: went bad. I think as they got stale and they
- 59:48Speaker 4: didn't know how to really counterack that they didn't have
- 59:50Speaker 4: a lot of diversity in their playbook to really counter
- 59:53Speaker 4: punch these teams. And now I think Kellen Moore brings that,
- 59:56Speaker 4: but I want to see how it fits with what
- 59:57Speaker 4: Jalen Hurts does and how the overall offen and it's
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: kind of fits into that because they have so many
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: of these great pieces. So just seeing how that's working
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: is certainly to me kind of the biggest story like
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: because it was the biggest storyline of why they were
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: their downfall last year and I think is the biggest
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: thing coming into this year.
