- 0:28Welcome to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio from Boise, Idaho. This
- 0:34is your host, Adam Graham. If you have a comment, please email

- 0:44at Radio Detectives, and become one of our friends on Facebook, Facebook dot
- 0:51com slash Radio Detectives. Well, going to be a bit long on the
- 0:57intro, I've got an important announce I want to begin by acknowledging that today
- 1:03is the ninety fifth anniversary of Armistice Day. In the United States, it's
- 1:08celebrated as Veterans Day, and I want to wish a happy Veterans Day to
- 1:14all of our listeners who served in our nation's military. That leads me to
- 1:19an announcement that today also launches another podcast. This one's going to be a
- 1:26limited edition podcast running for about nine months, and it's called The War.
- 1:32In the war, we're going to play World War II Old Time Radio.
- 1:38Time has always been a challenge when it's come to the idea of doing additional
- 1:42podcast, but I feel that the time is right to go ahead and do
- 1:49the War because it's necessary. At this point, we as as a world
- 2:00are losing our World War Two veterans. I think it's important to honor them.
- 2:06Although here and next year will mark the seventieth anniversary of D Day,
- 2:13so we decided to do this podcast to have the suggestion of listener Brian Ashby.
- 2:17Of course I have got my own spin on it, and we'll be
- 2:21covering a wide variety of different programs including dramas, news broadcasts, comedies,
- 2:28plays, speeches, and we'll even have a few detective episodes thrown in for
- 2:34good measure. So it'll be a great podcast for people who enjoy history.
- 2:38I want to have a grasp of those times. I think that radio programs
- 2:43provide a great insight into it. We're going to begin this first week talking
- 2:47about a lot of anti war sentiment, anti war plays, and radio programs,
- 2:53so you kind of get a feel for where resistance in the United States
- 2:58was prior to or what people were thinking, because I think that's part of
- 3:01the experience. And I have to admit some of this anti war stuff it's
- 3:05kind of heavy, so it may not be something that most people want to
- 3:08step into right away, but it will be there. At the war dot
- 3:13Great Detectives dot net, that's the war one word dot Great Detectives dot Net.
- 3:19All right, well we've gone long enough on the opening. Let's get
- 3:22into today's episode of Yours Truly Johnny Doller the matter of the Medium, Well
- 3:27done from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar. Hi, Johnny Crack
- 3:36and a Universal Adjustment girl. Hi, have pantsy? What's in your mind?
- 3:38Had your fortune told lately? Nope, but I don't think I want
- 3:42to the last time it came true, Well, it's met him, guy,
- 3:45guy, I went into a transfit or whatever you call it. Yeah,
- 3:50anyhow, she told me I was going to become an insurance investigator,
- 3:52and I've ben't stuck with it ever since. Oh that's it. But I'd
- 3:55like to try your hand as a psychic investigation. Sure, what do I
- 3:59do? Drop over with him? I'm on my way tonight and every weekday
- 4:10night. Bob Bailey in the transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed
- 4:14Expense account America's Fabulous freelance Insurance Investigators, Truly Johnny Dollar Expense accounts submitted by
- 4:33Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Universal Adjustment Bureau Hertford, Connecticut. Following is
- 4:39an accounting of expended yours during my investigation of the matter of the medium well
- 4:43done expense account Item one one fifteen TAXI to the office of Pat McCracken at
- 4:49Universal. I hadn't seen Pat since he'd ruined my Southern California vacation by insisting
- 4:55I tied in with a Johnny Roger matter in the Lamar case or my expense
- 4:58account for some strange reason, came out to a rite nice figure. I've
- 5:01even included the case of VEO that I'd sent him for having handed me those
- 5:05investigations. So I didn't know whether he was going to be nice to me
- 5:10or to rub my nose in the dirt. As it turned out, he
- 5:12didn't know either. I don't quite know whether this is going to be another
- 5:15soft touch for that expense account of yours, or a completely crazy one or
- 5:18a real rough Tommy Green seems to think the latter, though I don't see
- 5:23why, particularly hos Tommy Green midd Eastern life down in New York. Oh,
- 5:27but just bill me as usual? Sure, Okay, Now, Tommy
- 5:29says he's run into this sort of thing before, but not on so big
- 5:31a scale. That's why he's worried about it. Pat, you still haven't
- 5:34told me what. Oh, Now, one of his clients happens to be
- 5:38a sweet young thing named Carol Sharp twenty six or seven, beautiful, badly
- 5:43spoiled love that way, well, nothing going. Yes, she lives alone
- 5:48in a swank penthouse in the East fifties. Down there in New York.
- 5:50Playgirl Tommy holds one hundred and ten thousand dollars policy on him, straight life
- 5:56beneficiary. Her family mother and a couple of kid brothers, no father,
- 5:59no, The others live over in mart Chunk, PA. That's where her
- 6:02father made the dough that keeps her in the penthouse and keeps the others living
- 6:05well in the old family man, So, what's the problem somebody threatening her
- 6:10life? I don't know, Johnny. It depends on what you mean by
- 6:13threatening. She just requested Tommy to change beneficiaries. What's so unusual about that.
- 6:17Well, one of them is to be a man named Tony Ricardo for
- 6:19thirty follos. Oh, so she's fallen for the guy and is making the
- 6:24nice gesture. Maybe we don't know yet. The other is a so called
- 6:29medium, Madame Celia something. Uh uh, I've heard it before. Turn
- 6:33the family fortune over to me and I'll get in touch with dear departed Papa.
- 6:36That's what it looks like from here. She's being took. How can
- 6:40it be any of our business? Last time Tommy was requested to change a
- 6:43beneficiary to a medium, his hale and hearty young client suddenly turned up dead
- 6:47and they pended on the medium. Mm hmmm. Apparently this sort of thing
- 6:50goes on quite a bit, so it has Tommy worried. So he asked
- 6:55for you, all right, just what do you want me to do?
- 6:58What do you want to do? Break out the old crystal ball, Pat,
- 7:00and we'll see expense account item too. Transportation Hartford to New York and
- 7:09the offices of Mid Eastern, where Tommy Green turned out to be a mild
- 7:13manner, thairly likable successful insurance broker. Come in, mister Dollar. Glad
- 7:16you could make it. I'll do, mister Green, sit down, want
- 7:19you thanks? I suppose Pat mccrack installed you what's on my mind? Only
- 7:24that you think one of your clients is being taken for the proverbial sleigh ride
- 7:28by some spiritualists as you no doubt no, mister Dollar, Spiritualism is recognized
- 7:33well established religion. Sure of course, however, is in any other There
- 7:36are Charlattan's in Some of these mediums, as they call themselves, take literally
- 7:41millions of dollars every year from people by trickery, by producing weird manifestations that
- 7:46appear to be genuinely supernan. For me, I know what you mean.
- 7:49My own mother took a beating from one of those phonies when I was just
- 7:51a kid. You know, promised messages from father after he died, and
- 7:56at twenty five bucks a try. Oh I wonder you're suspicious of them,
- 8:00and especially if one Madam Celia morgana morgana. Have you seen this, madam?
- 8:05No, but I believe you'd better. Have you changed what's your name,
- 8:09Carol Sharp's policy yet? No? But I'm afraid I can't stall it
- 8:13much longer. And you're afraid that once you do change it, Carol ain't
- 8:16going to be long for this world. It's happened before down. Yeah,
- 8:20well, I can't just barge in on this, Madam morgana Morgana announce that
- 8:24I'm an insurance investigator, and then another Wait a minute, what's the name
- 8:28of this other beneficiary, Tony Ricardo? Who is he? All I know
- 8:33is what Carol's told me love affair. Yeah, he sounds like a playboy
- 8:37and they do a lot of nightclubing together. Money. I don't know family.
- 8:41I don't know that either, but he's in for thirty either, one
- 8:43hundred and ten thousand if anything happens to her, if we change the policy,
- 8:48how are you going to start? Well, If this Carol Sharp is
- 8:52all Pat McCracken says she is, this case could have a very pleasant beginning.
- 9:00I stuck around with Tommy Green long enough to listen to him verify what
- 9:01Pat had said about Carroll's family, wealth, et cetera. Take a look
- 9:05at a snapshot of her and get her address. It am three point eighty
- 9:09taxi to the Bell Towers at sixty one four East fifty second Street, a
- 9:11magnificent want an apartment hotel at the edge of the East River, real swank.
- 9:16The place even had its own private ducks, with several well kept cruisers
- 9:18tied up, and even a small seaplane. Pat, I warn you,
- 9:22it's expense a kind of going to be small. Yes, may I help
- 9:26you, sir, Yes you can. I'd like a small apartment for a
- 9:28few days. Are you a loan, sir? Yes, Well, we
- 9:33still have a small five room penthouse suite for fifteen hundred dollars a month with
- 9:37complete maid service of oh, of course, and on a minimum one year
- 9:41lease. Of course. Look, all I want is a bedroom, living
- 9:43room type of thing, and I may be here only a week or so.
- 9:46Well, in that case, I'm afraid there's nothing we can do for
- 9:50you unless tell me, sir, do you have any recommendations from any of
- 9:54our tenants. Well, I'm an insurance investigator, here my card, and
- 9:58I want I think as close as possible to Miss Carol Sharp's apartment. But
- 10:01I don't want to have to rob for that investigated. Did you say that'll
- 10:05do? Dear? Surely Miss Sharp can't be in any kind of way.
- 10:11Think what it would mean to our reputation of mister mister oh, mister Dollar,
- 10:15stop worring. Well, she isn't any kind of trouble yet. But
- 10:18for reasons that well, they don't particularly concern you. I need to be
- 10:22as close to her as I can. What a pleasant thought. For the
- 10:24same reason I don't want her and all what my business here is. Of
- 10:28course, believe me, mister Dollar, I'm the very soul of discretion.
- 10:33Yeah. See that you stay that way. Now, have you got a
- 10:35rum or two for me? Oh? Let me see. Now she's in
- 10:37penthouse A on floor twelve. There is a two room on ten, very
- 10:43nice at three twenty five a week, with the complete service of course.
- 10:48Okay, I'll take it very well. Just sign this card please, And
- 10:52oh dear, I'm afraid I must have a week in advance. Oh sure,
- 10:56sure, what's am easily three hundred and twenty five bucks. One of
- 11:03the two billboys who carried up my two bags at a bucket feast settled me
- 11:07in ten thirteen. I must admit the place looked almost worth a tag tasty
- 11:11furnished, spitting polished clean, or a plate glass panor on a view of
- 11:13the bustling East River. Yeah, I wish for a moment that I could
- 11:16afford this sort of lodging. First thing I did was telephone to an old
- 11:20Powell Detective Division sagin singer. Hey, look saj, I need a rundown
- 11:24on a dirty crook. He's going around acting like an insurance stick. But
- 11:30he's a crook. Oh, his name Dollard Johnny Dollar. And I tell
- 11:33you that punk is a sucker. Sunny. Further, we know all about
- 11:35him. We got word here in New York and we'll put a steak out
- 11:39on him. A minute we spot his hideout. That copper I can give
- 11:41you good Johnny, is where you're staying. Hi, you will reprovate.
- 11:45I'm at the tower as he's fifty second the tow expensive. I'd you guess
- 11:50I want to see you in exactly twenty one minutes. I'll punch the time
- 11:52clocking me over ROUM ten thirteen. Right, oh, and be sure it's
- 11:56with soda, easy boy? Give you any incur arangement? Do you want
- 12:00to name the brand of scotch? It'm four twelve twenty one bottle of Scotch
- 12:07and set ups for two sure, Johnny from when I was doing a nightclub
- 12:11beat. And she's lived in town for quite a while, Yeah, a
- 12:15couple of years at least. How much do you know about her? Righty?
- 12:18Hm hmm, not much. She's loaded, throws your money around like
- 12:20it's confetti. Yeah, I figure that when I found her standing here,
- 12:24finally left it to her. Mm hmm. Coal miner. Wasn't he on
- 12:28a big colliery in Frankville, Pennsylvania, somewhere near Machunk? Well, I
- 12:31must have paid off good in the old days. But tell me what you
- 12:35want to give me a refilm. Yeah, sure, every heard a matter.
- 12:39I've seen your ma again. I'm gonna huh. I've chased at bousy
- 12:43old phony from one end of the island to the other. I looked enthusay
- 12:46Crystal ball, and I see enthusay, passed the present, see future,
- 12:50and into your pocketbook and my hand. She could. I think she's operating
- 12:54somewhere are on the Jersey side now, oh yeah, thanks, But she's
- 12:58still operating, operating with real class. Last time we picked her up and
- 13:01kicked her out. What do you mean nice apartment over here on the east
- 13:03side, classy clientel? Hey is Carol sharp hook by her curse? So
- 13:11just how does she work? Well, the usual way the phonies do.
- 13:13Goes into a trance, writhes around like a sea sick rattlesnake, and then
- 13:18gives with the voices voices you know, speaks with the tongues of the departed.
- 13:22Hey, look where's the money angle this? Well, she makes like
- 13:24the trances cause her a great agony of body and mind. Starts with the
- 13:28pitch about doctor bills and the more clients can afford, the more they pay,
- 13:31and they don't get wise. She's smart, works it like a serial
- 13:35story, you know, continued next week. Oh, I don't know.
- 13:37Briefly well, at each say, she tells them just enough to what their
- 13:41appetite for more leads right up to the next hot bit of information has them
- 13:45hanging on every word. Then Bingo to trance is over. Ah, However,
- 13:50if you come back next week when I recover my strength, so they
- 13:52they are off from the back. A week later, they'll play games with
- 13:56her again. No, no, no, it seems pretty obvious to me.
- 13:58Well, that's because you've never attended as run by an artist at it.
- 14:01And why don't you? I think I will, I see what I
- 14:03can dig up for you. You mean there are still something going on around
- 14:05sow Dozens, hundreds probably kick them out of one place they moved to another,
- 14:09unless you can tie a serious wrap on them, which reminds me Tommy
- 14:13Green told Yeah, yeah, I handle that one myself. Madam Gabor Tchernarski
- 14:18got a sweet old man to sign over his fortune and had him knocked off.
- 14:22It's a dirty wreck. Yeah. Religion, science, the professions,
- 14:24they all even opened door to the racketeers. I guess okay, set up
- 14:28a seance for me ready and meantime? Yeah, run me a make on
- 14:33Tony Ricardo. Well, yeah, yeah, he's the other one. Carol
- 14:37Sharp wants the name as a beneficiary besides the medium. Yeah, beneficiary of
- 14:41a whopping big life policy. Okay, good, Johnny, I'll call you
- 14:43it. When I took my time showering and changing clothes, I wracked my
- 14:48brain trying to cook up a smooth way to meet Carol's Sharp under no circumstances
- 14:52did I wanted to suspect the reason behind my interest in her, at least
- 14:56not for the present. Reck was it number one? Then? Meet?
- 15:01I was just time. My time on the phone rang Johnny Dellar, Randy,
- 15:07Johnny, Oh, hi Ram set up a date with a medium?
- 15:09Yeah, for tonight. But that's not what I'm calling about, Johnny.
- 15:11I can write a book for you on Tony Ricardo, and I don't think
- 15:16you'd like it. You seen him yet? No, but I will as
- 15:18soon as I can locate him. And if he finds out what you're working
- 15:20on, he'll locate you. Fine. Yeah, just be sure you see
- 15:24him first and that you're carrying a gun. Thanks Randy, Johnny Dellar Randy
- 15:46Singer at headquarters, Johnny Oh, Hi more information on Tony Ricardo only what
- 15:50I told you before. Look out for him, Randy. That doesn't sound
- 15:54like anybody that a guy like Carol Sharp would be associated with. Who knows
- 15:58for a cutter money most anybody'd be willing to act like a nice old coat
- 16:02until he get his hands on it. Yeah, I know what you mean.
- 16:04But now I thought you were going to set up a seance for me
- 16:07or couldn't you find a crystal ball? I'm working on it. I'll call
- 16:11you. Yeah, do that. Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar
- 16:23location, New York City to the Universal Adjustment Bureau, Hertford, Connecticut.
- 16:27Following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the matter of the medium
- 16:32well done. Three people to look up immediately, First, Carol Sharp,
- 16:41wealthy heiress who insisted on a funny change in the beneficiaries of a whopping big
- 16:45life insurance policy. Second, a questionable character named Tony Ricardo who was scheduled
- 16:52to be one of those beneficiaries. Third, in the same category as Tony
- 16:55one, Madame Cedia morgana Morgana, a self styled psychic medium. Instead,
- 17:00I huddle with Tommy Green, the broker who handled Carol Sharp's policy. But
- 17:03you haven't even seen Carroll yet. No, Johnny, I can't stall off
- 17:07changing the beneficiaries of her policy much longer. You've got to do something about
- 17:11that. Because you don't like mediums. This one is a fake. You
- 17:14don't like playboys with foreign names. Listen, Johnny. I'm afraid that once
- 17:18she names them in her policy, her body will suddenly turn uploading around somewhere
- 17:22in the East River. What if I find they're okay? In spite of
- 17:25the opinion of Sergeant's singer of the NYPD, what did he say? Oh
- 17:27that much? But he hinted that when I meet Ricardo, I'd better be
- 17:30carrying a gun. Well, don't you see, That's exactly what I'm driving
- 17:33at. As for the medium, well, tell me, you know as
- 17:36well as I do, there are a lot of perfectly legitimate hones spiritualist churches.
- 17:40All leave me, Johnny. If this one ever saw the inside of
- 17:42a churchy to be a miracle, She's a fraud. How do you know
- 17:45I ever met her? I know how these phonies operate ever met her?
- 17:48No, No, I haven't. I haven't the least idea where to look
- 17:52for That's why I sent for you. But you haven't even seen Carroll yet.
- 17:56Now look, Tommy, I've taken a place in her apartment, hotel,
- 17:59the Bell Towers. Oh, you explensive cowboys, And I'll meet her
- 18:02as soon as I can in my own way. Meanwhile, I want you
- 18:06to do something for me. It'll help to get things moving. Anything.
- 18:08Find out some more about the beneficiary she wants to cut off her mother and
- 18:11two brothers out in mud Chunk, Pennsylvania. Find out how they're doing financially,
- 18:15among other things, how Johnny hire another investigator? Take it that you
- 18:21don't want them to know about it? Well, why don't you cook up
- 18:23some kind of a news item about Carol, the local girl in the big
- 18:26city and phone it into the local newspaper editor. Those small town papers love
- 18:30that sort of stuff, and the editor will probably talk his head off about
- 18:33the family if you encourage him a bit. What kind of a news item?
- 18:37Oh, anything that's harmless. Sounds like something you'd be better at than
- 18:40I am. Tommy. I've got other things to do, plenty, armed
- 18:45with the snapshot of Carol. I took a cab to the bell towers and
- 18:49I hope that somehow, and without making it too corny or obvious, I
- 18:52could figure a way to get next to Carroll's sharp. As it turned out,
- 18:56it was both corny and successful. You see, the automatic elevator in
- 19:00the towers is a slow one. Will you push the button for twelve?
- 19:04Please? Oh? Surely, miss, I'm only going to the what's the
- 19:10matter? M Oh, yeah, I beg your pardon. I'm sorry,
- 19:18but I I can't believe this unless I'm psychic. Now, look, mister,
- 19:23this city is too big and sophisticated. But is something wrong with you?
- 19:32You did want to get off on the tenth floor, didn't you?
- 19:34Yes, yes I did. Well, we're here floor ten. So,
- 19:41mister, did somebody hypnotize you? Yes? No? Oh, please excuse
- 19:48me. It's well, it's just that I can't believe. Oh, I'm
- 19:52terribly sorry. When I was a kid, I used to have a dream
- 19:56over and over again about a beautiful girl and her name was the same dream,
- 20:00over and over and then. Well it startled me just now because because
- 20:07you look just like she did. But it's all nonsense. And I know
- 20:11it, and I apologize. Carol, did you say yes? But it
- 20:15was just a dream, and probably I just imagine that you resemble her,
- 20:18and I'm terribly sorry. I know what this must look like to you.
- 20:23Yes, like a ritical dream, a truth dream. It's a psychic phenomenon.
- 20:30Oh that well, I'm sorry, but I don't believe in that sort
- 20:34of stuff. Oh well, it just happens that there are thousands of cases
- 20:38on record and by people of reputation and responsibility. Oh sure, sure,
- 20:45but now excuse me, And again I want to apologize for this, well,
- 20:48this embarrassing moment. Why I could see over my shoulder that she left
- 20:55the elevator door open until I'd gone into my suite across the hall. I
- 20:57sat down next to the broad into overlooking East River, crossed my fingers and
- 21:00waited ten minutes fifteen. Hello, mister dollar, Yes, who's that?
- 21:12This is Carol? What your dream? Girl? Hello? Oh, I
- 21:19get it. I made a fool of myself in the elevator. Now you're
- 21:22rubbing it in. No, I didn't mean it that way. I hope
- 21:26you don't think I'm being forward, but I'd like to talk with you about
- 21:29your dream I mean, what does that mean? And I was afraid you
- 21:33thought I was trying to pull a fast one on the elevator. But how
- 21:37did you know who I am? I just asked the desk clerk who was
- 21:40in ten thirteen, my name is Carol Sharp? Then it really is Carol.
- 21:45Well that's amazing, that's why I want to talk to you. Well,
- 21:51there's a nice cocktail lounge downstairs in half an hour. In half an
- 21:55hour, bye, dollar, you are fast one. Let me see Johnny
- 22:03Dollery, Randy Singer. Yeah, I want to know after what I've been
- 22:07talking to This is a comedown. Oh you met Carol. Oh look,
- 22:15I've set up the sciance. I promised you. You still want it now
- 22:19that you've met the girl? Sure? I want to find out what this
- 22:22stuff is all about. How those people operating so on? Want to pick
- 22:25me up here at the towers. Why don't you meet me here at headquarters
- 22:27and you can look over the file on Tony Ricardo. Good idea. I'll
- 22:30be clear anytime after six. Better make it around seven. I've got a
- 22:33date for cocktails. Are you down on a case or with Carol Sharp?
- 22:40Lucky dog? See you lady to say that Carol looked like a vision when
- 22:51she swept into the cocktail lounge would have been a gross understatement. Her light
- 22:55blue cocktail gown was probably from Hetty Carnegie, but its lines were simple in
- 22:59the extreme, and it only sir to accentuate the fresh, live figure of
- 23:03the natural beauty of the girl. Her blond hair was drawn back tightly,
- 23:07and a silver blooming stole was draped carelessly over his shoulder. If I'd put
- 23:11on an act when I stayed at her in the elevator, believe me,
- 23:15this was no act. Now, I hope you don't think me too brazen
- 23:18for having called you the way I did. You have no idea? How
- 23:22glad I am? Will this be all right? Oh? Fine? Thank
- 23:26you? I was afraid after that episode in the elevator you might have thought
- 23:30I was just some lonely bachelor trying to find a date. Are you a
- 23:34bachelor? Confirmed? You just haven't met the right girl. A lot of
- 23:40times like this when I think, perhaps, oh surel Sharran Bitters, please
- 23:48sherryan Bitters and b o over Ice, be honest with me. Do I
- 23:55really look like the girl you used to dream about when you were a little
- 23:57boy? Or did you dream about a little girl your own age who just
- 24:03happened to bear some resemblance to me. Well, no, no, you
- 24:07see that's very important. You see, if it really was a verritical dream,
- 24:12well, you see, the phenomenon of precognition would be involved too,
- 24:17So to speak, yes, you're now knowing me psychically before you could possibly
- 24:22know about me by any natural means. Where have you lived most of your
- 24:26life? Oh, Hoover here in New York her for Connecticutssylvania. Never except
- 24:30for an occaional trip to Philadelphia, but that wasn't until I was grown up.
- 24:33Then you couldn't possibly have ever actually seen me, because all my life
- 24:37I've lived in Pennsylvania and well in the coal mining district. Well, so
- 24:41your dreams of me must have been you to some supernatural cause there's no other
- 24:45explanation, Well, is there, Carol? And yeah, thanks, I'll
- 24:52sign a you say by the bell, or rather by the waiter. I'm
- 25:00afraid I came awfully close to admitting to Carol that I trumped up the whole
- 25:03dream business just to meet her and talk with her. She was certainly half
- 25:06on the subject of things psychic, and I'm afraid the natural sucker for anyone
- 25:10who wanted to capitalize on her gullibility. Beautiful, intelligent, well educated.
- 25:14But you'll see what I mean, although it's a terrible strain on her,
- 25:18these deep trances. I mean, I've received messages through her, Johnny,
- 25:22from my father through this meeting. Yes, Madame Morgan and MORGANA. And
- 25:25your father's dead. He died three years ago. Carol is sure about those
- 25:30messages, Yes, Johnny, I'm sure. That's why I want you to
- 25:33go and see see these things for yourself. Will you go to her with
- 25:37me? Now? Don't swing at me, but at this point I think
- 25:41I'd go anywhere with you, Johnny, I'm serious. I want to tell
- 25:45her about you anyway, and the vertical dreams. Oh all right, what
- 25:52I'll call her tonight and perhaps we can see her tomorrow night. All right,
- 25:55yeah, Carol, I don't want to seem suspicious, but yes,
- 25:59don't tell her anything about me except that you're bringing me along. Oh no,
- 26:03of course not. She wouldn't let me anyway. That's the way the
- 26:07fraudulent mediums work. Oh, there are frauds among them, plenty of them,
- 26:11you know. They get the information from some mutual friend and pretend they're
- 26:15getting it from a supernatural source and she doesn't. I'm sure of it.
- 26:23So far, so good. I'd met Carol Sharp, I'd convinced her in
- 26:26a snid sort of way, that I was intrigued with this psychic phenomena business.
- 26:30I was well on the way to meeting the medium who had sparked this
- 26:33whole case, and later tonight, thanks to Sergeant Randy Singer of the NYPD,
- 26:37i'd attend to sing once calculated to be my first step in finding out
- 26:41how the phonies in the rack can impress their customers. There was just one
- 26:44more person to meet, Tony Ricardo, whom Carol wanted to name along with
- 26:48the medium, as beneficiary of her big insurance policy. By the time Carol
- 26:52and I finished cocktails, I was sorry I'd made any plans for the evening,
- 26:56but I was already late for my meeting with Randy at headquarters. I
- 26:59took Carol back to her penthouse and then dropped into my own suite to pick
- 27:00up a top cord. Somebody had shoved a note under my door. Mister
- 27:08Johnny Dallar, if you value your life, you'll stay away from Carol's Sharp
- 27:14it was unsigned. Now here's our star to tell you about tomorrow's intriguing episode
- 27:33of this week's story. Tomorrow, I find out a thing or two about
- 27:37a killer and about a medium not so well done. Join us, won't
- 27:41you? Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Yours Truly Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey,
- 27:56is transcribed in Hollywood. It is produced directed by Jack Jemstone. We
- 28:02also wrote tonight's story. Be sure to join us tomorrow night at the same
- 28:06time and station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Roy
- 28:11Rowan speaking welcome Back. It was somewhat interesting on this episode to note this
- 28:25sort of disclosure about legitimate spiritualist churches, that that's worked into the script at
- 28:37least once, and it continues to be to do that throughout the script.
- 28:44And it's a somewhat interesting quirk with CBS programs at this point. This is,
- 28:52of course, broadcast in nineteen fifty six, and it's safe to say
- 28:56that a lot of earlier programs would not have had this sort of disclosure.
- 29:00This one worked into the plot. I mean, at least one character in
- 29:04the first one. It was Pat McCracken, and the second one it's Johnny
- 29:08Doller raising this identical point. And there would occasionally be these disclosures. There
- 29:18there's an episode of suspense featuring an unethical psychologist, and they actually the producer
- 29:29of the show actually comes in to talk about how psychology is generally beneficial.
- 29:37So these sort of disclaimers to avoid offending people were kind of a feature of
- 29:45some of the late fifties early sixties CBS radio programs. Probably in a priory
- 29:53if they thought it might offend a large group of people, they might not
- 29:56even broadcast it. One story of when comedian Fred Allen kind of bumped heads
- 30:06with the network. He actually had to remove a part of the script where
- 30:12Portland Hoffa, his wife, said she wasted time at the rodeo less half
- 30:18en rodeo fans, My, how time's changed? All right, listener comments
- 30:22and feedback. DWY offers some praise for the Callackles matter. This one has
- 30:29many twists, but not the obvious writer ploys one of the finest stories.
- 30:33Well, I would definitely agree that this one had some That one had some
- 30:37very interesting features. All right, Well, the matter of the medium well
- 30:42done continues on Wednesday. Send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot
- 30:48net, follow us on Twitter at Radio Detectives, and be back here tomorrow
- 30:53for the amazing mister Malone from Boise, Idaho. This is your host,
