- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up everyone and welcome back to the Epstein Chronicles.
- 0:04Speaker 1: In this episode, we're picking right up where we left
- 0:06Speaker 1: off with the USVI and their motion for a partial
- 0:10Speaker 1: summary judgment. A. Epstein admitted the conduct but not the
- 0:15Speaker 1: ages to Staley. On July 25th, 2006, Staley met with
- 0:20Speaker 1: Epstein in person and Epstein admitted to the alleged conduct
- 0:24Speaker 1: of engaging in sex for money with young women, only
- 0:27Speaker 1: denying the ages. B. Staley communicated the exchange to Erdos
- 0:31Speaker 1: the next day. I went and saw him last night.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I've never seen him so shaken. He also adamantly denies
- 0:37Speaker 1: the ages. Solicitation of a minor for prostitution. is covered
- 0:42Speaker 1: under the TVPA and Epstein had a reasonable opportunity to
- 0:46Speaker 1: observe the victim, so it need not be proved. The
- 0:49Speaker 1: defendant knew or recklessly disregarded the fact that the person
- 0:53Speaker 1: had not attained the age of 18 years. U.S. Code 18,
- 0:57Speaker 1: Section 1591, A and 1 and C. Staley also spoke
- 1:02Speaker 1: to Dimon about the very public indictment of the bank's client, Epstein, B. J.P.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Morgan's own due diligence gave it reason to suspect Epstein
- 1:11Speaker 1: and Ghislaine Maxwell early on. By 2006, J.P. Morgan already
- 1:16Speaker 1: had reason to suspect Epstein's sex trafficking and Maxwell's involvement.
- 1:20Speaker 1: In 2003, as part of the bank's due diligence for
- 1:23Speaker 1: an Epstein account, J.P. Morgan reviewed the Vanity Fair profile
- 1:27Speaker 1: The Talented Mr. Epstein, which reported Epstein's penchant for young,
- 1:31Speaker 1: foreign model types and his best friend Maxwell summoning a
- 1:35Speaker 1: young woman for him and throwing a party attended by
- 1:37Speaker 1: Prince Andrew and filled with young Russian models. In 2003, J.P.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Morgan also knew that Maxwell was involved with Epstein in
- 1:46Speaker 1: structuring cash withdrawals, a red flag for trafficking. Yet the
- 1:50Speaker 1: private bank opened an account for Maxwell in 2003 on
- 1:53Speaker 1: Epstein's referral, noting Maxwell was a companion, longtime friend of
- 1:58Speaker 1: Jeffrey Epstein. By Epstein's arrest, J.P. Morgan knew it had
- 2:02Speaker 1: made over $ 25 million in payments to Maxwell from Epstein,
- 2:06Speaker 1: News reports related to Epstein's 2006 arrest again described Epstein's
- 2:10Speaker 1: relationship with Maxwell. J.P. Morgan continued to handle payments from
- 2:14Speaker 1: Epstein to Maxwell, including $ 7 million for the purchase of
- 2:17Speaker 1: a helicopter. And later reports again allege Maxwell solicited young
- 2:22Speaker 1: girls for Epstein, identified as a human rights issue by J.P. Morgan. C. J.P.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Morgan had corroborating information on Redacted and Redacted. J.P. Morgan
- 2:33Speaker 1: had significant corroborating evidence of Epstein's sex crimes by July
- 2:38Speaker 1: 2006 and knowledge of ongoing conduct after July 2006. J.P.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Morgan knew that alleged accomplice Redacted worked for Epstein and
- 2:48Speaker 1: had just, months prior to his arrest, Redacted. Redacted was
- 2:52Speaker 1: also a customer of the bank. J.P. Morgan in 2005
- 2:56Speaker 1: made two separate $ 25, 000 payments from Epstein's accounts to Redacted
- 3:01Speaker 1: After police reports identified her as a recruiter in 2006,
- 3:05Speaker 1: JPMorgan continued to handle payments to Redacted, totaling over $ 675, 000
- 3:10Speaker 1: from Epstein's accounts. JPMorgan also had information related to trafficking
- 3:16Speaker 1: victim and accomplice Redacted, also a customer of the bank.
- 3:20Speaker 1: In 2004, sponsored by Epstein, JPMorgan opened accounts and credit
- 3:24Speaker 1: cards for two teenagers, Redacted, another victim, and Redacted. models
- 3:29Speaker 1: in NYC and friends of Jeffrey Epstein. J.P. Morgan's due
- 3:33Speaker 1: diligence report on Redacted was approved by the private bank,
- 3:37Speaker 1: even though the report had no birth date, confirmed SSN,
- 3:40Speaker 1: or a passport or a driver's license number. Epstein's banker
- 3:44Speaker 1: at the time, Mary Reith Casey, never met Redacted as J.P.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Morgan's process contemplated, even after news reports that Epstein referred
- 3:52Speaker 1: to her as his Yugoslavian sex slave. J.P. Morgan knew
- 3:56Speaker 1: that Epstein was and redacted, came to the U.S. from
- 3:59Speaker 1: Yugoslavia and lived at a building owned by Epstein's brother. Further, J.P.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Morgan knew it had made more than $ 36, 000, $ 67, 000, and $ 82, 000
- 4:06Speaker 1: in payments from Epstein's account to redacted in 2004, 2005,
- 4:08Speaker 1: and 2006. Respectively, even though Epstein represented her net worth,
- 4:10Speaker 1: was $ 100, 000 from supposed modeling assignments. J.P. Morgan also knew,
- 4:25Speaker 1: Redacted's debit transactions at the time, which AML Compliance only
- 4:29Speaker 1: reviewed more than four years later, were enlightening as compared
- 4:33Speaker 1: to the countless stories related to Epstein's escapades. Lots of salon,
- 4:37Speaker 1: lingerie shops, drugstores, NY Palm Beach, and in St. Thomas,
- 4:41Speaker 1: his place of residence. Plus lots of video like Girls
- 4:44Speaker 1: Gone Wild and some other shops not fit for My
- 4:47Speaker 1: Good Catholic Upbringing. JP Morgan's own human trafficking white paper
- 4:52Speaker 1: discussed upscale sex trafficking operations, incurring expenses such as jewelry, lingerie, cosmetics,
- 4:58Speaker 1: and sex toys. Even after she was identified in 2006,
- 5:02Speaker 1: JP Morgan continued to handle payments to Redacted, totaling over $ 600, 000
- 5:06Speaker 1: from Epstein's JP Morgan accounts. JP Morgan, Redacted, and Redacted, J.P.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Morgan also knew that Epstein sponsored credit cards for Redacted
- 5:18Speaker 1: and Redacted for travel through Paris, Europe, and the U.S.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Virgin Islands and the U.S. Monthly. D. J.P. Morgan had
- 5:25Speaker 1: information about Epstein's cash withdrawals. On October 17, 2006, in
- 5:31Speaker 1: light of the derogatory information related to Epstein's felony charges
- 5:34Speaker 1: of soliciting underage prostitutes, J.P. Morgan's private bank held a
- 5:39Speaker 1: rapid response meeting. which were escalations of derogatory information to management.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Private Bank identified Epstein's frequent cash withdrawals as worthy of
- 5:50Speaker 1: note in conjunction with his felony charges of soliciting underage prostitutes.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Cash withdrawals are routinely made in amounts for $ 40, 000 to $ 80, 000
- 5:58Speaker 1: several times a month, which total over $ 750, 000 year-to-date. JPMorgan
- 6:05Speaker 1: compliance staff acknowledged Epstein was known to pay cash for
- 6:09Speaker 1: his massages and minors are the issue. Three massages a
- 6:13Speaker 1: day with girls pay $ 200 to $ 300 in cash and
- 6:16Speaker 1: recruiters pay $ 200 in cash, as JPMorgan knew was reported
- 6:20Speaker 1: is about $ 40, 000 cash per month. JPMorgan knew that in
- 6:25Speaker 1: the time period of the incidents investigated by the Palm
- 6:28Speaker 1: Beach police and prior to Epstein's plea, it had handled nearly... $ 1. 75
- 6:33Speaker 1: million in cash withdrawals from Epstein. The large cash withdrawals
- 6:37Speaker 1: really never stopped and were ultimately the claim reason for J.P.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Morgan parting with Epstein in 2013 when combined with his
- 6:44Speaker 1: personal history. Epstein's 2011 explanation that the cash was for
- 6:49Speaker 1: jet fuel for his foreign travel was redacted and not
- 6:52Speaker 1: supported by any receipts or other documentation. And redacted. Further,
- 6:58Speaker 1: JPMorgan knew Epstein was in jail and on house arrest
- 7:01Speaker 1: from July 2008 through July of 2010 and thus not
- 7:05Speaker 1: traveling overseas. In any event, JPMorgan's diligence cited reports that
- 7:10Speaker 1: Epstein traveled to foreign countries to traffic young women. So,
- 7:13Speaker 1: whether to pay for that travel or to pay victims
- 7:16Speaker 1: and recruiters or both, JPMorgan knew the cash was connected
- 7:20Speaker 1: to Epstein's sex trafficking. 2. After July 2006, J.P. Morgan
- 7:25Speaker 1: learned more information that fed its knowledge of Epstein sex trafficking,
- 7:29Speaker 1: including the Epstein high-powered lawyers helped him avoid federal sex
- 7:33Speaker 1: trafficking charges. J.P. Morgan also knew that Epstein's wealth and
- 7:37Speaker 1: high-powered lawyers allowed him to escape more serious charges, including
- 7:42Speaker 1: federal sex trafficking charges. In 2006, J.P. Morgan and their
- 7:46Speaker 1: due diligence included multiple news reports, that Epstein assembled a
- 7:50Speaker 1: team of star lawyers, including Alan Dershowitz, Gerald Lefcourt, Roy Black,
- 7:55Speaker 1: and Jack Goldberger, to undermine the credibility of the 14-
- 7:59Speaker 1: to 17-year-old girls and challenge the distorted view of the
- 8:02Speaker 1: case presented by the Palm Beach police. Reports said Epstein
- 8:06Speaker 1: used Black to hire private investigators to pose as police
- 8:09Speaker 1: officers and to review with witnesses what to say to
- 8:12Speaker 1: actual police officers. In 2006 and 2007, J.P. Morgan reviewed
- 8:18Speaker 1: reports that federal prosecutors were looking to bring child sex
- 8:21Speaker 1: trafficking charges against Epstein and that his lawyers were negotiating
- 8:25Speaker 1: a deal to avoid those charges. The FBI considering investigating
- 8:30Speaker 1: Epstein for child sex crimes at 50. J.P. Morgan later
- 8:35Speaker 1: acknowledged reports that Epstein supposedly bought his way to a
- 8:38Speaker 1: lesser sentencing and paid a whole series of girls to
- 8:41Speaker 1: stay quiet. J.P. Morgan was handling millions of dollars in
- 8:45Speaker 1: payments to those lawyers at the time, including numerous $ 100, 000 payments,
- 8:50Speaker 1: and continued to handle tens of millions in payments to
- 8:52Speaker 1: lawyers at 127. On September 24, 2007, Epstein agreed to
- 8:58Speaker 1: plead guilty to two prostitution charges in state court, including
- 9:03Speaker 1: the solicitation of a minor to engage in prostitution in
- 9:06Speaker 1: exchange for a federal non-prosecution agreement, providing him with immunity
- 9:10Speaker 1: from federal child sex trafficking charges. Under the NPA, Epstein
- 9:15Speaker 1: also waived his right to contest liability and damages in
- 9:18Speaker 1: civil lawsuits by minor girls identified by the NPA. The
- 9:23Speaker 1: NPA identified Redacted, Redacted, and Leslie Groff as Epstein's co-conspirators
- 9:28Speaker 1: in soliciting underage girls for commercial sex, and J.P. Morgan
- 9:32Speaker 1: knew of the reports of the plea deal beginning in 2007.
- 9:34Speaker 1: The NPA later became public, and J.P. Morgan was aware
- 9:39Speaker 1: of it. In October 2007... Ann Verdun, then-General Counsel of
- 9:44Speaker 1: Palm Beach, received requested information about Epstein, his transactions, and
- 9:49Speaker 1: his news coverage. This research connected the dots between Epstein's
- 9:53Speaker 1: financial transactions at the bank, his large, frequent cash withdrawals,
- 9:58Speaker 1: credit cards for Redacted and Redacted, and transfers to Redacted,
- 10:02Speaker 1: and his illegal conduct. The diligence showed Redacted, who had
- 10:06Speaker 1: talked to the police, unlike Heidi Fleiss, had a revoked
- 10:09Speaker 1: credit card, while Redacted, who did not talk to the police,
- 10:12Speaker 1: still had an active credit card under Epstein. J.P. Morgan
- 10:17Speaker 1: continued with business as usual. 3. JPMorgan knew Epstein was
- 10:22Speaker 1: connected to MC2 Modeling Agency he was accused of using
- 10:26Speaker 1: to traffic and abuse underage models. A news report surfaced
- 10:30Speaker 1: in 2007 of industry speculation that massage maven Jeffrey Epstein
- 10:35Speaker 1: is a secret financial backer of the agency being run
- 10:38Speaker 1: by scandal-scarred Jean-Luc Brunel, who was once accused of taking
- 10:42Speaker 1: advantage of underage models. Epstein reportedly gave millions to start MC2,
- 10:48Speaker 1: which opened in October of 2005. Epstein's a desperate old
- 10:52Speaker 1: man that fantasizes and takes advantage of young girls. Epstein's
- 10:56Speaker 1: rep Howard Rubenstein said he has no business relationship with
- 11:00Speaker 1: Brunel and MC Squared, but JPMorgan knew at the time
- 11:03Speaker 1: the report that Rubenstein was covering up for Epstein. In 2005,
- 11:08Speaker 1: JPMorgan had extended a million dollars standby letter of credit
- 11:12Speaker 1: for Epstein to backstop a loan to MC Squared. Only
- 11:16Speaker 1: two weeks after the news about Epstein's ties to Brunel
- 11:19Speaker 1: and MC Squared, Casey, among others, discussed the MC2 SBLC,
- 11:24Speaker 1: which the bank renewed through March of 2011. Even though
- 11:28Speaker 1: Epstein was set to plead guilty to felony sex crimes, J.P.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Morgan did not determine, and as of late 2011 still
- 11:35Speaker 1: did not know, if the $ 1 million was a payment
- 11:37Speaker 1: for services as a procurer. J.P. Morgan would review multiple
- 11:42Speaker 1: reports about child sex trafficking by Epstein, Brunel, and MC2,
- 11:47Speaker 1: Brunel owner of MC2, And Jeffrey Epstein engaged in racketeering
- 11:51Speaker 1: that involved luring in minor children for sexual play for money,
- 11:56Speaker 1: all the while continuing to extend the $ 1 million SBLC.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Redacted who J.P. Morgan was supposed to but did not
- 12:03Speaker 1: meet with. Redacted. All right, we're going to wrap up
- 12:07Speaker 1: right here. And in the next episode, we're going to
- 12:09Speaker 1: pick up with part four. J.P. Morgan knew of reports
- 12:12Speaker 1: that Epstein settled dozens of civil lawsuits alleging child sex trafficking.
- 12:17Speaker 1: All of the information that goes with this episode can
- 12:20Speaker 1: be found in the description box.
