- 0:00Speaker 1: Now if you've just joined us, we have been talking
- 0:02Speaker 1: throughout the morning about this terrible vision which we've seen
- 0:06Speaker 1: outside the Fanny Bay Supermarket Fanny Bay IgA, and we
- 0:10Speaker 1: have shared that vision now on the Mixed one oh
- 0:12Speaker 1: four nine Facebook page, so you can get a bit
- 0:15Speaker 1: of a better understanding of what or what Manual and
- 0:18Speaker 1: his wonderful team they have had to deal with.
- 0:20Speaker 2: This happened on Monday afternoon as I understand it.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Now joining me on the line to tell us a
- 0:25Speaker 1: little bit more about the situation is Manuel's son Alexi.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Good morning to your Alexi Katie mate, thanks for your
- 0:33Speaker 1: time this morning. Firstly, how's your mum and dad and
- 0:37Speaker 1: how are all the staff there at the IgA after
- 0:40Speaker 1: what unfolded earlier in the week that.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Fairly shook up from it all? To be honest, my father,
- 0:47Speaker 3: my mom and bab that I've owned the chaff for
- 0:49Speaker 3: a fair wall now and the violence is getting worse
- 0:53Speaker 3: and no matter what preventions they seem to put into place,
- 0:56Speaker 3: it doesn't seem to help. Nothing seems to help. So
- 1:01Speaker 3: speaking from my from my parents, they don't sell the
- 1:04Speaker 3: cask wine. That that a lot of the tenant problems
- 1:10Speaker 3: happened with they've they've stopped selling that many many years
- 1:12Speaker 3: ago to try to keep the area clear, but it
- 1:14Speaker 3: just doesn't seem to help. They're buying alcohol from other
- 1:17Speaker 3: places than coming into that area and causing the trouble.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I spoke to you dad.
- 1:22Speaker 3: People are unknown to the area. They've they've never been
- 1:24Speaker 3: in that area. The staff have never served them, they
- 1:27Speaker 3: have not seen them, so they're new to the area.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I spoke to your dad about that, you know, about
- 1:32Speaker 1: the that serving of the alcohol a few years back,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and I remember him telling me that even on a Sunday,
- 1:38Speaker 1: that there was still that problem of drinking, you know,
- 1:40Speaker 1: in the park area there near the i GA, despite
- 1:43Speaker 1: the fact that they're not allowed to serve alcohol on
- 1:45Speaker 1: a Sunday. So, you know, it's it's obvious that it's
- 1:49Speaker 1: an issue where people are getting alcohol somewhere and it's
- 1:51Speaker 1: still having an impact on all of those wonderful businesses
- 1:55Speaker 1: along there at Fanny Bay Alexi.
- 1:59Speaker 2: This happened one day afternoon, didn't that he did?
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yeah, mat Apparently it was over from what the police
- 2:08Speaker 3: that interviewed the gentleman said, it was over someone's wife
- 2:12Speaker 3: or something like that. But they seem they appeared to
- 2:14Speaker 3: be friends, but they managed to beat the living daylights
- 2:17Speaker 3: out of each other.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And yeah, it was.
- 2:21Speaker 3: It happened. It was quite hectic, really, it really was.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I look, I'm watching this vision as I talk to
- 2:28Speaker 1: you right now, and I've got to tell you I
- 2:30Speaker 1: felt really worried for your dad. At one point I
- 2:33Speaker 1: thought to myself, he is he's got one person behind him,
- 2:36Speaker 1: he's got one person in front of him. Someone has
- 2:39Speaker 1: got a massive rock in their hands. I worried about
- 2:42Speaker 1: I was really worried about your dad. So I can't understand,
- 2:45Speaker 1: like I can only imagine how you must have felt.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Yeah, look, the flight wasn't there to start with, so
- 2:51Speaker 3: unfortunately spilled out to the front of the shop and
- 2:53Speaker 3: it became their problem once they were trying to get
- 2:55Speaker 3: into the shop. My father is seventy three years old.
- 2:59Speaker 3: He work sixteen hours a day, seven days a week,
- 3:02Speaker 3: and in all honesty, he shouldn't have to put up
- 3:05Speaker 3: and he certainly too old to be putting up with it.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I watched the image and as his son I got
- 3:10Speaker 3: I got quite scared for him because I sort of
- 3:12Speaker 3: pointed out a few things. He said, looks he's gotten
- 3:15Speaker 3: older is his senses aren't quite as sharp as they
- 3:17Speaker 3: used to be, and I think he's coming up behind you.
- 3:20Speaker 3: That guy through the a frame match and he was
- 3:21Speaker 3: lucky that Scotty, he's his manager. They caught it and
- 3:24Speaker 3: stopped from hitting him. The other guy had a rock
- 3:26Speaker 3: and it was just I don't know if you noticed,
- 3:28Speaker 3: but in the start of the video with the right
- 3:29Speaker 3: at the front of the shop, it appears that one
- 3:31Speaker 3: of the guys actually stepped the big guy in the
- 3:34Speaker 3: neck with something. I don't know what it is, but
- 3:35Speaker 3: there was blood everywhere and it was just shocking. Yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 3: I was worried. I was I was worried for the gentleman.
- 3:41Speaker 3: I was trying to help my my father in Scotty,
- 3:43Speaker 3: and I was obviously very worried for my dad and
- 3:44Speaker 3: Scotty at the same time. It was just there was
- 3:47Speaker 3: a pregnant lady there in the start. She was petrified.
- 3:50Speaker 3: They ran into the shop and they locked the shop.
- 3:52Speaker 3: It was just, you know, the guy that helped my dad,
- 3:54Speaker 3: he got punched in the face for nothing but just
- 3:56Speaker 3: trying to do the right thing.
- 3:59Speaker 1: It's not a have you heard from that bloke who
- 4:01Speaker 1: helped your dad in the high viz gear funny.
- 4:05Speaker 3: He said, I actually said, my dad, did you have
- 4:06Speaker 3: for the man of beer? And I think to hear
- 4:09Speaker 3: the ordeal, I think it just sort of happened so fast,
- 4:11Speaker 3: and I think it was a thank you and a handshake.
- 4:13Speaker 3: And I'm sure he'll catch him next time he comes
- 4:15Speaker 3: into the shop.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 4:17Speaker 1: And you know, if there's one thing I know about
- 4:19Speaker 1: your dad, every time I go into that shop, he
- 4:21Speaker 1: is offering me some kind of Greek sweets to eat.
- 4:24Speaker 1: He's feeding my children. He treats his customers like they
- 4:28Speaker 1: are members of his own family. And I think that
- 4:30Speaker 1: that is what the disappointing part is when you see
- 4:33Speaker 1: this vision and you see that danger that he and
- 4:35Speaker 1: Scotty have been put in and all the rest of
- 4:38Speaker 1: the team.
- 4:39Speaker 2: And that's why it's so heartbreaking to watch.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Look it is and the worst part is we're not
- 4:44Speaker 3: it's not a nice lead into him. We're not alone.
- 4:46Speaker 3: It's happening all over Darwin. You walk through Kasina, it
- 4:49Speaker 3: happens in Casina. It's having trap palms and having trapped
- 4:52Speaker 3: and throughout the CBD. It's just what's going to happen, Katie.
- 4:56Speaker 3: And he's at his end. He I saw them do
- 4:58Speaker 3: him yesterday and he was he didn't want to come
- 5:00Speaker 3: on because he's just so frustrated. He's just he doesn't
- 5:04Speaker 3: want to talk about it anymore. He's done with nothing happens.
- 5:07Speaker 3: No matter everything bad that happens, nothing is ever resolved,
- 5:10Speaker 3: nothing ever becomes of it. He doesn't know what to
- 5:15Speaker 3: do from here. He's pretty much going to sell the shop.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I think I think he's just about done, so he's
- 5:21Speaker 3: he was talking about it the other day, retiring whether
- 5:24Speaker 3: that's on the cards or not, whether that was set
- 5:26Speaker 3: out of pure frustration or what it is. But you know,
- 5:29Speaker 3: he's just between break ins and you know, the life
- 5:33Speaker 3: threatening situations. He's just I think he's just about done.
- 5:36Speaker 1: And you can understand it, you know, you think you
- 5:38Speaker 1: can understand it. And they have run a wonderful business
- 5:41Speaker 1: there for such a long time. I mean, I love
- 5:44Speaker 1: going in there, and everybody that works there is so lovely.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Like I said, they treat you like family. Alex, How
- 5:52Speaker 1: I know that you'd said all that. Certainly it had
- 5:54Speaker 1: been said in that post on the on the Supermarkets
- 5:58Speaker 1: page that the police got there, they did have a
- 6:00Speaker 1: quick response, and that they handled the situation very well.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Yeah, they were fantastic. So they obviously got a few
- 6:07Speaker 3: phone calls if I don't know, if you know from it,
- 6:09Speaker 3: there was probably about three or four different women calling
- 6:10Speaker 3: at the same time, and then obviously the supermoke caught
- 6:13Speaker 3: as well. But their response time was excellent and they
- 6:16Speaker 3: were very professional, very apologetic. Look, they've got their job
- 6:20Speaker 3: to do, and their hands are tired, and unfortunately they're
- 6:22Speaker 3: so stretched and there's only so much they can do
- 6:25Speaker 3: as well. But in this particular situation, we couldn't fault
- 6:27Speaker 3: they were excellent. You know, they do their best every
- 6:31Speaker 3: day and they're doing a hard job, and we believe
- 6:34Speaker 3: they do a good job.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Yeah, made its a long time territory, and you know
- 6:39Speaker 1: you've obviously seen your parents working in that job, running
- 6:42Speaker 1: that business for such a long time. I mean, like,
- 6:45Speaker 1: how are you feeling at the moment when you see
- 6:47Speaker 1: that vision, when you see what's going on, and when
- 6:49Speaker 1: you know what your parents have had to go through,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and and you think about some of that crime and
- 6:55Speaker 1: anti social behavior that you're seeing around the place, Like,
- 6:58Speaker 1: how are you feeling at the moment?
- 7:00Speaker 3: And I'm scared for them, I'm gonna be honest, you know,
- 7:02Speaker 3: like one o the days when when we were younger,
- 7:06Speaker 3: there was there was a little bit of like there
- 7:08Speaker 3: was bad behavior, but there was that compassion. There was
- 7:10Speaker 3: that sensel I suppose a little bit of common sense.
- 7:14Speaker 3: That's all born. Nobody cares for anybody, No one has
- 7:17Speaker 3: respect for anyone. And I'm talking about any particular incidents,
- 7:21Speaker 3: you know, and it worries me and I'm I'm quite
- 7:26Speaker 3: worried for them, and I yeah, it's just I don't know. Yeah,
- 7:31Speaker 3: I makes you want to go back to I want
- 7:32Speaker 3: to make you want to go back into the business
- 7:34Speaker 3: to make sure I'm there to look after him, to
- 7:35Speaker 3: be honest, that's what makes me want to do.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Yeah, And Alexi, I think the whole community is just
- 7:40Speaker 1: feeling a bit like sad. You know when you see
- 7:43Speaker 1: that kind of vision and you think to yourself, what
- 7:45Speaker 1: is going on and why, you know, why is nothing changing?
- 7:48Speaker 1: Like why are we not sort of saying that this
- 7:51Speaker 1: behavior is totally unacceptable? Why is the government not stepping
- 7:55Speaker 1: out today and going this is totally unacceptable and these
- 7:57Speaker 1: are the things that we're doing to try and prevent
- 8:00Speaker 1: any business owner from having to go through this.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Look, it's a big question Katie. And you know, as
- 8:05Speaker 3: I said, we're not alone. It's everywhere. Everywhere you go,
- 8:08Speaker 3: every business owner you speak to, every shopping center you
- 8:10Speaker 3: walk into, you're seeing it. And it just happens to
- 8:13Speaker 3: be us this time. Yeah, it would be somebody else
- 8:15Speaker 3: next time, you know. So well, unfortunate, but something really
- 8:18Speaker 3: needs to give, something really needs to happen. Yeah, enough talking, yep.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I agree mate. I really appreciate you talking to me
- 8:25Speaker 1: this morning. Please pass on my love and best wishes
- 8:28Speaker 1: to your parents and to everybody there at the IgA.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I know that they do listen to the show, so
- 8:33Speaker 1: they're probably hearing it themselves, but I hope that they're okay.
- 8:37Speaker 3: No, okay, we'll do. Thanks for your time.
- 8:39Speaker 2: We appreciate it. Thank you,
