- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. Overcast skies, 12
- 0:07Speaker 1: degrees in VOCM Valley. Good afternoon, I'm Linda Swain. A
- 0:11Speaker 1: 45-year-old man who was wanted on a province-wide warrant was
- 0:14Speaker 1: arrested by police in Gander last night. RCMP say the
- 0:18Speaker 1: man's vehicle, which was parked on McGee Road and obstructing traffic,
- 0:21Speaker 1: caught the attention of officers around 9.40 last night. The
- 0:24Speaker 1: driver was unable to provide valid insurance or registration documents
- 0:28Speaker 1: and police subsequently learned that his license had been suspended.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Police checks confirmed that the driver was wanted on an
- 0:34Speaker 1: arrest warrant and he was taken into custody. RCMP in
- 0:37Speaker 1: Happy Valley Goose Bay seeking the public's help in locating
- 0:40Speaker 1: a young man reported missing from the community. His family
- 0:43Speaker 1: is concerned for his well-being. 22-year-old Jaden Rich was last
- 0:46Speaker 1: seen on Sunday afternoon. He's 6 feet tall and about
- 0:49Speaker 1: 220 pounds with shoulder-length black hair and brown eyes. Anyone
- 0:53Speaker 1: with information is asked to contact Happy Valley Goose Bay RCMP.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Canada's counter-tariffs on imported U.S. goods are widely expected to
- 1:02Speaker 1: lead to price increases on store shelves. Economics professor at
- 1:06Speaker 1: Queen's University, Beverly Laffam, says once those higher prices kick in,
- 1:10Speaker 1: they're unlikely to be lowered even if tariffs are removed.
- 1:13Speaker 1: She says those higher prices tend to affect lower-income people
- 1:16Speaker 1: the most.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Let's say everyone's paying 10% more for a washing machine
- 1:22Speaker 2: or something. Of course, that's a much bigger hit to
- 1:24Speaker 2: a lower-income person than a higher-income person. So the pain
- 1:29Speaker 2: is not going to be spread evenly across consumers.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Meanwhile, Premier Tony Wakeham met today with members of industries
- 1:36Speaker 1: affected by the trade war with the United States. Wakeham
- 1:39Speaker 1: was also joined in the meetings by Finance Minister Craig
- 1:41Speaker 1: Partey and Jobs Minister Lynn Paddock. Industry leaders shared their
- 1:45Speaker 1: concerns about potential impacts and discussed how the federal government's
- 1:49Speaker 1: response must be ambitious, targeted, and responsive to the situation
- 1:53Speaker 1: and work for all regions of the country, including ones
- 1:56Speaker 1: that are export-oriented like this province. Wakeham reiterated government's unwavering
- 2:00Speaker 1: commitment to collaboration with affected parties and how protecting provincial
- 2:04Speaker 1: interests has been prioritized. A recent Angus Reid survey shows
- 2:08Speaker 1: that Mark Carney's response in the face of rising tensions
- 2:11Speaker 1: with the United States has resulted in what some are
- 2:13Speaker 1: calling a Trump bump in his approval ratings. The latest
- 2:16Speaker 1: poll results show that 3 in 5 Canadians, or 62%,
- 2:20Speaker 1: approve of the Prime Minister's performance. That's up 11 points
- 2:23Speaker 1: from August. The increase comes after three-quarters of Canadians surveyed
- 2:26Speaker 1: indicated that Carney was right to walk away from trade
- 2:28Speaker 1: negotiations in the face of new U.S.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Demands.
- 2:31Speaker 1: However, Canadians are divided on Canada's bargaining power. 31% say
- 2:35Speaker 1: the country is in a strong negotiating position, while 34%
- 2:38Speaker 1: say it is weak. The finance minister is clarifying what
- 2:42Speaker 1: he says is public confusion around the planned 15% electricity rebate.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Craig Parney says the rebate is not part of the
- 2:48Speaker 1: new Churchill Falls MOU, but it does piggyback on it.
- 2:52Speaker 1: He says implementing the rebate is contingent on the final
- 2:54Speaker 1: Churchill Falls agreements being signed. Once the deals have been finalized,
- 2:58Speaker 1: Parney says the rebate would kick in fairly quickly.
- 3:00Speaker 3: If the deal is signed at the end of December,
- 3:03Speaker 3: then I would think that we're ready to roll in January.
- 3:06Speaker 3: the rebate will show up on people's power bills. Now, ordinarily,
- 3:09Speaker 3: if ever we were doing something with HST and had
- 3:12Speaker 3: to bring in the CRA, that's a little more complicated
- 3:15Speaker 3: that we've probably got a period of maybe six months
- 3:18Speaker 3: by the time the CRA works with us to get this.
- 3:20Speaker 3: This is going to be directly to Newfoundland Power that
- 3:22Speaker 3: they're going to do the subtraction on the billing.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Your weather forecast is next.
