- 2:47busy studying Shelton. I don't know.
- 2:50I just think they just like randomly e-mail Shelton like on
- 2:55Sunday night and say, what are you doing on Tuesday?
- 2:59OK, could you do this? Basically.
- 3:02I mean, basically, what's going on?
- 3:06Have you been, brother? Man, it's been a fun week so
- 3:09far. It's been a fun week.
- 3:12You know, unfortunately my my Colts took a a tough loss to the
- 3:18Steelers. I've I've had to hear about that
- 3:19a little bit this week. Oh yeah, you know that that
- 3:23happens when you turn the ball over six times.
- 3:25Having a -5 ratio there is not the way to to win a football
- 3:30game. But I mean it it it took that
- 3:34level of catastrophe to lose by 1 touchdown.
- 3:38So I guess you can kind of chalk that up to and we'll get them
- 3:42next week. That's the only thing you can
- 3:44do. And then your boys make the
- 3:47maybe the biggest play, maybe the biggest play.
- 3:50What's going on? Kent from Halifax, go out and
- 3:54get Sauce Gardner shrimp secondary.
- 3:56Give up two ones now. Yeah, and and Donny Mitchell, so
- 4:01I mean, we didn't, you know, not for nothing, but at the same
- 4:04time, yeah, you got to spend money to make money sometimes.
- 4:09So at this point, you know, we, we needed some help at at that
- 4:14position. I think that's going to be a
- 4:16big, big boost for us. I think, you know, Mitchell had
- 4:20some I, I was actually more shocked to lose Mitchell than I
- 4:25was the two first on this deal. But you know what?
- 4:30I we, we've got enough depth at wide receiver at this point, at
- 4:33least for the frontline perspective.
- 4:35But it would be nice to see what Mitchell could do as he
- 4:39developed more in this system. But you know what?
- 4:42Let's try to win one this year, yeah?
- 4:45OK, that's that's the goal, huh? Danny Dimes on the cheap.
- 4:50You know what man? I mean, at this point, you know,
- 4:52you, you get Danny Dimes on the cheap.
- 4:55You've you had a pretty decent roster rolling into this year,
- 4:58but you had so many question marks, especially at the most
- 5:00important position. And all of a sudden it's like,
- 5:02OK, well, we, we look pretty good there.
- 5:05You know, let's, let's turn it up to 11 and see what it see
- 5:07what happens. Do you think I'll pay him
- 5:11significant money because it's a one year deal, right?
- 5:15Yeah, at this point, I don't know.
- 5:18I don't know. I don't know if we, you know,
- 5:22try, you know, depending on what happens this year, if we try to
- 5:24throw a franchise tag on him or something, you know, try to try
- 5:29to play it out a little bit longer and then, you know, let
- 5:31it ride and see, see, see if we can get some consistency out of
- 5:34him. Because what I don't want to
- 5:36happen is what happened in New York, where you ended up, you
- 5:39know, paid a lot of money. And yeah, you paid a lot of
- 5:42money. And all of a sudden it's like,
- 5:43wait a second. Not the same guy.
- 5:46You don't look like the same guy with without Saquon back there
- 5:50so. 100 percent, 100% Well, we we shall see halfway through the
- 5:55NFL season and you know, we are now in the home stretch of the
- 6:00college football season while in the infancy of college
- 6:05basketball season. We are going to talk about the
- 6:07game last night, which I actually watched almost 70% of
- 6:13that game. I watched Significant and you
- 6:16did too because you were you watched a little.
- 6:18I watched. I watched pretty much all of it,
- 6:19yeah. Good for you.
- 6:20I watched 70%. I was proud of myself.
- 6:23What I missed, and we'll talk about it later, is the big run
- 6:27because I had to leave at halftime, put a kid to bed and
- 6:28then come back and it's like, oh, I don't know, might as well
- 6:32finish watching it. But oh shit, OK.
- 6:35But we are here to tell the truth Tuesday.
- 6:37We'll, we'll tell the truth about basketball and some other
- 6:40things later, but we do have to start with what happened on
- 6:44Saturday afternoon in Lane Stadium as the Louisville
- 6:47Cardinals, not to our surprise, take care of the Hokies 2816.
- 6:53Unfortunately, and you know, we always tell the truth, We do the
- 6:58good, the bad, the ugly, the unexpected.
- 7:01So I got to say, Brian, to me, what went well was for the
- 7:07longest time, it seemed like our starts had been slow and it
- 7:13wasn't Saturday, the opening drive was, but then the rest of
- 7:16the first quarter was really positive for the team.
- 7:21Yeah. I mean, you, you came out, you,
- 7:23you felt pretty good about the way they kind of set the tone.
- 7:27You know, it was one of those games that even as things
- 7:34started to kind of turn for us, it never felt like we were out
- 7:37of it. We felt like if we could just
- 7:39get just a little push, just a little bit here, just a little
- 7:42bit there, we might be able to get back into this thing.
- 7:47But getting a fast start is important.
- 7:49You know, we've we've seen and I know we're we're past the Pryor
- 7:53at this point, but this is still a pry developed teams and we've
- 7:57seen when when prize teams have started fast, they've had a lot
- 8:00of success. Yeah.
- 8:02Not the fastest, not the fastest by any means, but just saying
- 8:06what we've dealt with. Considering the the way that
- 8:10both offense and defense have started the games most of this
- 8:13year, yeah, it was good. It was good to really kind of
- 8:16assert yourself early and feel like you kind of controlled the
- 8:20way the game was going to flow, at least in the first half.
- 8:23Especially after they literally run 2 plays and score a
- 8:27touchdown because that happened. My first thought was, well I
- 8:32might be able to go do something at halftime.
- 8:35That was my first thought. Then they flip it, get the pick,
- 8:39tie the game up and you know, and that felt good.
- 8:43And then, you know, just say it, say, say what happened after the
- 8:48touchdown. We don't want to talk about it,
- 8:52man. We don't want to talk about it.
- 8:54The block punt, the block punt happened after the touchdown and
- 9:00get you get you another lead and then take a lead by 9 by half
- 9:05and and it felt good. But were you like me while
- 9:10watching it? And maybe folks in the chat were
- 9:12like, I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop because
- 9:15Louisville shown all year that they're a good team and you're
- 9:19just waiting for it and waiting for it.
- 9:21And eventually it did. I, I was sitting back and I was
- 9:24like, all right, well, the defense is doing what they need
- 9:27to do. We've had a, you know, one big
- 9:29play that kind of turned the tide a little bit.
- 9:33Are we going to be able to hold on?
- 9:37That was basically what I was, I was looking at, Can we hold on?
- 9:40Can we do just enough offensively to hold on?
- 9:43I was, I was definitely concerned that we hadn't shown a
- 9:50lot of consistency with being able to move the football down
- 9:53the field even when we were getting some points on the
- 9:58board. So I was, I was definitely
- 10:01concerned that there was going to be.
- 10:03Yeah, I was. I was hoping that a second-half
- 10:05adjustment with, you know, correct some of the things
- 10:07offensively that we were struggling with and
- 10:09unfortunately, it just got worse from there.
- 10:11Yeah, it was basically a we, we it was, it was the second-half
- 10:17just bad, bad like you know that there was the bad, there was the
- 10:23over the top. I I don't.
- 10:26Know. You know what?
- 10:32I I can sense him, yeah. Sense him, but the the whole
- 10:41thing was with the with the the bad was with the offense.
- 10:45It just nothing ever happened. And then you had the one chance
- 10:50and the break happens. And that was just, Oh yeah, it
- 10:52was just like. I mean, that's a touchdown.
- 10:56You still bring that in, man. Oh my God, Eight to 10 yards of
- 10:59separation on it, stoink right off top of the helmet, and then
- 11:03it goes. And then you know what else went
- 11:05bad? Well, me and you, me and you
- 11:08talked about it, message back and forth and, and other people
- 11:11on there too, Tally Shelton and a couple other folks.
- 11:14And literally this game was effectively like 4 plays, 4
- 11:19plays. And people can sit up here and
- 11:22say, no, that's not the way football works.
- 11:24When you give up a 60 yard touchdown, you have a 60 plus
- 11:28yard punt return that put them inside the five and then 220
- 11:32plus touchdowns like explosive plays were the game.
- 11:36They did not consistently Dr. the field.
- 11:41Soup to Nuts 1012 Play Drive. Yeah, they they didn't do a
- 11:46whole lot outside of their explosives.
- 11:50They really were leaning on the big plays, the the turning point
- 11:55plays. And if you take away those, I
- 11:58mean, we're going to talk about in a second because I talked
- 12:01about it this morning on offense, we were 3.8 yards per
- 12:08play. On the flip side of that, if you
- 12:12take away those explosives, Louisville was about the same.
- 12:16They weren't much better than that.
- 12:18So it's one of those things where as bad as our offense were
- 12:21was the difference is is that they made the plays when they
- 12:24were there and we didn't. That was it.
- 12:28They made the big ones, you know, we missed the big one.
- 12:31Now you still do the math. That doesn't mean we win the
- 12:34game, but at least it take changes momentum.
- 12:37Well, it changes momentum and it puts you in a position where if
- 12:40you make that play, the, the calculus of how you are running
- 12:45your offense and what you need to do to get the lead at the end
- 12:48of the game shifts. So the, the, the way that your
- 12:52scheme and the way that you're calling, the way that you're
- 12:54operating is going to be a little bit different.
- 12:57And it gives you the ability to be a little more balanced in
- 13:01your attack and not feel like you got to get it all in a
- 13:04handful of plays like we had to do at the end there.
- 13:07Yeah, but the other, the bad thing, you mentioned yards per
- 13:10play, but passing, the passing offense was just not good at
- 13:13all. I mean.
- 13:14No bad. You know, we talked about it.
- 13:19I mean, the yardage is bad enough. 76 yards total.
- 13:23You look at the leading receiver for the Virginia Tech Hokies.
- 13:27One reception, 17 yards by Aidan Green.
- 13:34Yikes. Under under 50% pass completion
- 13:37and it's like and, and, and, and I think the majority of that is
- 13:42comes in the second-half when you're when they get down and
- 13:45they you have to pass. You know, the, the one thing I,
- 13:49I will say, I don't know if you want to put this bad whatever,
- 13:54at least the last three to four games, we know our identity and
- 13:59we've stuck to it and we've stuck to it and we've kept
- 14:03ourselves in games. Maybe give Philip Montgomery a
- 14:07little credit on that. But I mean, you're, you're,
- 14:11you're not going to win a lot of games in this area of college
- 14:14football throwing the ball like that.
- 14:18Well, I think the problem is that we've seen that we go as
- 14:21Kyron goes and Kyron goes as the opponent changes, as the wind
- 14:26blows it. It's it's really, you know, the,
- 14:31the inconsistency of the play I think has been something that
- 14:35it's hard to really put a finger on.
- 14:38I mean, we know that he is definitely more of a run first
- 14:42quarterback. I mean, before, before we get
- 14:44anywhere else, but he's had games where his passing has not
- 14:51hurt us and then he's had a lot of games where it has hurt us.
- 14:53And this was one of those games where his passing struggles, his
- 14:57inconsistencies, his struggles with footwork absolutely burned
- 15:01us to a point where we just couldn't muster enough offense
- 15:06to help out how well our defense played.
- 15:08Honestly, I mean outside of that really the one big play to start
- 15:12things off there and it wasn't a, you know, I don't really have
- 15:17a whole lot of complaints about their effort for.
- 15:19Four quarters. No, the, the defensive game plan
- 15:22was the right game plan. And I mean the, the, the, and
- 15:26it's like I said after the first touchdown, it was like, this is
- 15:29going to be bad, bad. But then the adjustments were
- 15:33made and it took them a while to readjust to it.
- 15:39And then, well, we can't go full service Academy, Jim.
- 15:42We don't have the players to do that.
- 15:45You know, we have a coach that could teach it, but I don't
- 15:48think we can fully do that. And you know, chop blocks suck.
- 15:52So. But yeah, as far as Kyron go,
- 15:55yeah, you're 100% right. And it's always never about
- 15:59yards, but more about efficiency, because his biggest
- 16:04game this year outside of the Wofford game was.
- 16:08Ken, is that a typo or is that a type of party I should go to?
- 16:11Yeah, I'm about to say I went to a wedding party in Halifax and
- 16:15lived there many years of my life.
- 16:17But but it's the truth. The team, his passing goes as we
- 16:20go. So yeah, let's move on to what
- 16:26we weren't prepared for. And somebody threw it up on
- 16:28there. I was not prepared to see Jeff
- 16:30Overton at all this season and it was good seeing him.
- 16:34He got a few carries. I will say one thing that it's
- 16:38very noticeable. No disrespect to Hawkins or
- 16:42Bully that one run for four in like the explosive that when he
- 16:47got into that inside zone, that looked different.
- 16:52And I know you responded and you were like, yeah, but Overton
- 16:56looked different. No disrespect to those guys, but
- 17:00he looked different with that one cut upfield and it was just
- 17:03like he got tackled 4 yards up field.
- 17:04But it was just like how quick he hit the hole was different.
- 17:09Yeah, you're seeing that one cut explosiveness that you like to
- 17:12see in this type of offense. And I mean, I think Hawkins has
- 17:17a little bit of that, but he doesn't quite have that extra
- 17:19gear that I think we saw with Overton just being able to
- 17:22explode through the hole there. Yeah, it's going to be exciting
- 17:26to see how much he's going to get into the game as, as we kind
- 17:30of move through the rest of the season, whether that's, you
- 17:34know, him wanting to get out there and and contribute and,
- 17:36you know, for all intents and purposes, probably put some tape
- 17:39out there for folks depending on, you know, what decisions he
- 17:42makes at the end of this season. It's going to be interesting.
- 17:50It is going to be interesting as far as what can you do better
- 17:55moving forward. I mean, I think we're at the
- 17:57point now where we are where we are.
- 18:00The only thing I ask is if the defense, the next three games
- 18:04can play to the level they played with.
- 18:07We have a puncher's chance to beat the next three teams.
- 18:10We really do. Yeah.
- 18:12But we also if they play slightly below, it could be
- 18:15bloodbath. And when I say that, get
- 18:19whatever bottle, beer, wine, whatever you like, keep it near
- 18:25because you're probably going to need it.
- 18:26I mean, if we're. If we're looking at the, you
- 18:28know, prognosticating out another week, it could be the
- 18:34most inconsistent playing match up of the year when we, when we
- 18:39match up with the, with the Seminoles, man, because that's,
- 18:44that's another team that goes the way their quarterback goes
- 18:48and the quarterback also goes the way of the wind.
- 18:52So it's, it's, it's certainly something that's going to be
- 18:55interesting to watch in a, in a, in a couple weeks here.
- 19:01You know what, it's going to be a, a really interesting thing to
- 19:08watch, help teams defend US going forward.
- 19:10Because I mean, when you look at this game, Louisville, it looked
- 19:14like their game plan was we're going to make Kyron beat us,
- 19:19whether it's with his legs or with his arm, we're going to
- 19:22make Kyron beat us. And Kyron had one of those games
- 19:25where it was an inconsistent game for him.
- 19:27And it showed in the way the offensive numbers stacked up.
- 19:32They were kind of selling out to stop the run with the running
- 19:35back. They they, they, they were like,
- 19:36we're not going to let the running backs beat us.
- 19:38If Kyron beats us, Kyron beats us.
- 19:39And he, you know, Kyron did went out there and ran the ball
- 19:42pretty well overall, But we were so inconsistent passing the ball
- 19:46and nobody else was getting super involved in the running
- 19:49game because of their scheme. And now all of a sudden, you
- 19:52know, Kyron's got to do a little bit more than he probably wants
- 19:54to with his arm and, and was just not having a good day.
- 19:58Just for my eyeballs, I don't think I think I saw the safeties
- 20:03in the picture every snap. I don't think they ever played
- 20:06back in any situation. And that that says a lot because
- 20:11it sounds like basically data chose to play what safety spy
- 20:18man across the board like, OK, beat us.
- 20:22And you're not going to beat us. And they're a well coached team.
- 20:26Clearly they're Jeff Bronson are running for some Tier one jobs.
- 20:33Louisville has really had Kyron's number 2 if we think
- 20:36about it. Oh God, 34 going back.
- 20:38To even going back to 23, man, when Kyron was having a, you
- 20:41know, one of his better years, obviously, Yeah, that was his
- 20:45weakest outing of the entire season.
- 20:48And, you know, this outing this past week was probably at least
- 20:51in his, you know, bottom two to three, if not his worst outing.
- 20:55Oh. Man as a quarterback.
- 20:56So, oh, you want to know that game worse than this game?
- 21:0012 for 2169 yards, one pick, 6 yards rushing.
- 21:08Yeah, the point has been made in stamp.
- 21:11So. Yeah.
- 21:12So anything else to put a bow on this one, Brian?
- 21:16Because I mean, it wasn't listen, I'll say this.
- 21:19It was a fun game to watch from our perspective, at least from
- 21:22our perspective it. It was it was fun and
- 21:25frustrating so, well, they're. Always frustrating.
- 21:28But I'll, but I'll caveat that because I think in my mind like,
- 21:32so I, I'm like a y'all know at this point that I'm cautiously
- 21:37optimistic person that that's, that's my MO cautiously
- 21:41optimistic. When you go in and you play
- 21:44pretty well for the first half, you get, you get me invested
- 21:49just enough where you can tear my heart out again every time I
- 21:54can, you know, if, if I go in there and I'm like, all right,
- 21:57well, we're losing, but it is what it is all good.
- 22:00But they wrote me back in just enough, especially with the way
- 22:05the defense was playing overall. And then, you know, the wheels
- 22:09fall off in the third quarter and next thing you know, we're,
- 22:12you know, we're taking that L pretty hard.
- 22:16Yeah. So that that was frustrating for
- 22:18me. But at the same time, there was
- 22:20a lot of exciting plays that happened within the game.
- 22:23Oh, yeah. And it was an interesting chess
- 22:25match to watch those defensive coordinators dial stuff up to
- 22:30keep those offenses in check. Yeah, 100%.
- 22:35So there it is. Pokey's fall to three and six on
- 22:41the season, but met my expectations, so yeah.
- 22:48And put up what Steven just put up there.
- 22:53Which one? This one.
- 22:54Last one and they're still fun. They have not put to the credit
- 22:59of the coaching staff give a lot of credit to Montgomery on that,
- 23:01especially after like you said, after ODU.
- 23:05And then I think Kyle, I can't remember if he said it on here,
- 23:07if he just texted it to me or you or to us.
- 23:11If my are we at 5:00 and 4:00 or 6:00 and 3:00 if Phillip?
- 23:15Montgomery is the coach. Maybe couldn't be worse.
- 23:26I mean, I think you, you know, you probably, you probably
- 23:31scraped by South Carolina if Phillip Montgomery is the coach
- 23:35at the gate. Vanderbilt's the interesting one
- 23:39because a 10 point league, who knows we that's it's the old
- 23:42what if scenario. So we'll just let it stay there,
- 23:45Brian. If not, we're here 3 hours
- 23:47tonight going crazy. All right, let's flip it.
- 23:50Let's talk about the basketball game last night.
- 23:53The season has begun and although we don't do basketball
- 23:59all the time, we watch the games.
- 24:03If anyone's ever interested in hosting a basketball podcast,
- 24:05reach out to us. We will more if you if you show
- 24:09the interest has some credibility.
- 24:12You might have yourself a podcast show throughout three
- 24:15corner. But it was fun watching that
- 24:20game last night Brian just in general to see the new pieces to
- 24:23see Hansberry obviously Neo and some of the other guys in there.
- 24:30He is texting me all about it this morning.
- 24:35But it it, it felt different. Even though at halftime it
- 24:42seemed like, Oh my God, because that been the story of to me,
- 24:45the last like 3 and four years of hokey tip off games.
- 24:49It's like, Oh my God, are we really going to lose to this
- 24:52team? And they pull away near the end
- 24:54and it'd be OK. But last night even with that,
- 24:58it was me and he were chatting. Charleston Southern was shooting
- 25:0160% from three. And it wasn't bad defense.
- 25:05They were just making everything where it was like, hey, I'm you
- 25:09know what? They're hitting some
- 25:10unbelievable contested shots. I'd like seeing a little bit
- 25:15better perimeter D, but it's not atrocious like we've seen in the
- 25:18past. And then I'm unfortunately
- 25:23having to put a kid to bed at halftime and I'll walk back and
- 25:25it's like 19 point lead, like 3 minutes.
- 25:28Yeah. The, the points are coming fast
- 25:32and furious. You know, defense stepped up.
- 25:35They, they locked him down to start the second-half.
- 25:37And you know, some of those 3 pointers that that we were
- 25:40missing in the first half started to drop as well.
- 25:42I mean, when you go, I think, I think we finished the first half
- 25:45something like 16 or 17% from three and then finished 32% for
- 25:49the night. So I mean, there was a big shift
- 25:51in the second-half and obviously they came back down to earth on
- 25:54the other side in the second-half as well, finishing
- 25:57the night like 35 1/2 or something like that.
- 25:59They came with, they came down to the more average and I knew I
- 26:02texted you and said, you know, if they were just shooting
- 26:04average from three, this would be a 13 point game.
- 26:06Oh, it was literally the threes that we're keeping the minute.
- 26:08I mean, you know, when when you looked at at the the field goal
- 26:11percentage, we had the advantage.
- 26:13But you know, they were hitting almost all their threes.
- 26:18So there you go. Should have told Phil just come
- 26:20on to 9. He could have gave us full recap
- 26:22but tell me impressions in the first time, live on the court
- 26:28and everything. What was your impression to him,
- 26:30just in general? It's so cool seeing Virginia
- 26:35Tech with the big guard. I'm just, I'm not, I'm not used
- 26:39to it having having a guy that can facilitate, get his own
- 26:46shot, the effective shooter. It's it, it's going to be
- 26:53interesting watching how he develops and how he starts being
- 26:56a little bit more probably aggressive offensively with
- 26:58getting his own shot and, and, and things like that.
- 27:01But I mean, in, in terms of facilitating the offense,
- 27:04running the offense, I mean, it was, it was Chris, man, I was, I
- 27:08was really excited to see him out there.
- 27:12Yeah, the, the, the one thing I say, and I've, I've mentioned
- 27:15this, I know I mentioned it to Phil today in a text, was him a
- 27:20somebody mentioned it and it was true.
- 27:22He was looking to distribute last night.
- 27:24Yeah. And he got 8 assists with eight
- 27:26points. He did not have the best of
- 27:28shooting games, but they were just a oh, excuse me, I missed
- 27:32an assist there, man assist. But there were two plays that
- 27:41vividly remember watching. The first was pretty early when
- 27:45he sort of just decided he was going to take the ball to the
- 27:48rack and there was no one that was going to stop him.
- 27:53And that when he did that, he made that layup.
- 27:55It was like we always have talked about it.
- 27:58Tally always has talked about it.
- 27:59Even Sheldon has always talked about we never had that guy to
- 28:02just you know what, they're on a 10 nothing run or they're on a 5
- 28:06nothing run. They cut it to one.
- 28:07We need a bucket. Go make a bucket.
- 28:10That little move where he, it was a layup and then
- 28:14second-half, he didn't need to do this.
- 28:16We're up like 26. He makes a move in and freaking
- 28:20hits a step back, fade away and you just look at it and it was
- 28:23just like that guy had absolutely no shot to, to stop
- 28:28his, to stop that shot having that's exciting with him.
- 28:33Now what I'll say is Toby Lawall and Hansberry, man, it feels
- 28:40good having guys get 2 guys get double digit.
- 28:46Double digit rebounds, Hansberry with 19, Lawal with 20.
- 28:52You know, you look at the first half, you might want Toby to be
- 28:55a little more efficient with his shot selection.
- 28:59But like I've got you know, we we finally have a you got a
- 29:05dynamic perimeter player, you got a dynamic front court
- 29:09player. I mean, players now, I think I
- 29:11feel like we're we're finally a roster that feels complete,
- 29:15complete front to front to bottom, Yeah.
- 29:18Yeah, and and then and then bench help too.
- 29:21I mean, well, first of all, the Toby the wall alley oop early in
- 29:25the game, Good Lord, I think, I don't know who threw that
- 29:29assist, but I felt like it was about 3 feet back here, a little
- 29:33bit too far back, but Toby and his bunnies just up and got it.
- 29:38But the other part in in in kind of knowing the players coming
- 29:42off the bench, you know, with a big guy like Gerdek coming off
- 29:48the bench and Shoot coming off the bench where he should be
- 29:52coming off the bench and Ben Hammond knowing that you have
- 29:58those type of players that can come off the bench.
- 30:02A nice eight man rotation. I know a couple other guys got
- 30:04playing time, but in in my opinion, the five starters with
- 30:08Gerdek, Hammond and Shoot are going to be the core 8.
- 30:12If somebody else develops and can get you 10 off the bench for
- 30:15defense, rebound, whatever, wonderful.
- 30:20But I think just having known guys and you know what they can
- 30:25do off a bench, it's just so nice to have because when Ben
- 30:28Hammond come off the bench and did what he did, drop, what do
- 30:32you have like 7-8 points, 9 points last night.
- 30:35That's that's so refreshing. And I know it's Charleston
- 30:38Southern, everybody. And I know I'm trying not to get
- 30:40my hopes up, but it's like in the past, it's not been that
- 30:44way. Yep, it's not been that.
- 30:48Way it it, it hasn't been where you can go to 3 or 4 deep off
- 30:51the bench and feel really good about it.
- 30:54And I feel like they've got 4 bench players that they feel
- 30:58pretty good about. And then on top of that, you've
- 31:03raised the baseline of your starting five as well.
- 31:06Yeah. I mean that that that's big
- 31:09time, man. I mean, you got guys that were
- 31:11playing super meaningful minutes last year and you know, they're,
- 31:17you know, a bench piece and it's still a solid bench piece, but
- 31:20you know, you, you've raised the, the floor and the ceiling
- 31:25of what this basketball team can be. 100% and again, it's a
- 31:30pretty big temple. Guys coming off the bench are
- 31:33pretty young guys. Oh, so hold on, there's a name
- 31:38here. Feels just throughout Dorn.
- 31:43Antonio Dorn. Did he didn't play last night?
- 31:46He did not. All right, to Phil text me and
- 31:50educate me, Phil on this kid. But the I love again, I text to
- 31:57Phil occasionally about stuff and the next few games are going
- 32:01to tell a lot about the team. I mean because you know you've
- 32:06got Saturday. It's going to be Providence.
- 32:12Providence are what they are. You know it it seems like
- 32:16forever. It's Providence is always put
- 32:17good teams out there in the Big East and then going and looking
- 32:22down after that. Saint Joe's.
- 32:24Saint Joe's I know have been sort of on a roller coaster ride
- 32:28feels like the last 15 years. OK.
- 32:31He's a German and he's suspended.
- 32:33Yeah. What else is new?
- 32:34It's always somebody on the basketball team that's getting
- 32:37something's happening and screwing things up.
- 32:40You know, gambling, just leaving school just for the hell of it.
- 32:47But but, but really, so Providence, Saint Joe's and then
- 32:51you get to Charlotte Bryant. But Atlantis is going to be big.
- 32:56I think regardless what the record is, I think this team is
- 33:00going to be tested enough for Mike Young to know the exact
- 33:04rotations, who he can trust, who we can't trust, etcetera,
- 33:08etcetera before we get into December.
- 33:13That's just the feel of it because we're going to be
- 33:15playing roughly 454 to five teams that are going to be good.
- 33:22And I think that's also been an issue, even though we've gotten
- 33:26some wins over the last few years leading up to ACC play.
- 33:31It's like they're games where he's you've got to try it and it
- 33:35looks like it looks like this kind of worked.
- 33:37And then we get an AC should be like, oh God, this this fuck
- 33:40terrible. What are we supposed to do here?
- 33:42Well, I think the big the big thing too is that one thing we
- 33:45don't have to worry about this year that we've had to worry
- 33:47about really the last 3-4 years. I mean, some of that's not our
- 33:53not out, you know, outside of our control with all the shit
- 33:56that's happened with our point guard position.
- 33:58But we've got a point guard that matches up with any guard in the
- 34:05ACC. So when you get into that type
- 34:08of play, you at least know, you know, you're not rolling out
- 34:12this undersized 6 foot nothing point guard with the with the
- 34:17smaller wingspan that's going to struggle against those longer
- 34:19guards in the ACC. You're not going to have that
- 34:21this year. And a big that can shoot.
- 34:24Yeah, A. Couple bigs that can shoot.
- 34:26So it's it's we'll see if I mean it.
- 34:32I don't have, by the way, the game's on Peacock Saturday,
- 34:35everybody not at ESPN. So if you well, I can't, there's
- 34:40some good programming on Peacock.
- 34:42I don't buy it because I got everything else under the sun.
- 34:45So maybe listen to the radio version.
- 34:49Subscribe to the Cock Curtis. Oh man, I got so many damn
- 34:53streaming subscriptions. It's not funny.
- 34:57And one's not YouTube. I'm not missing anything on
- 34:59ESPN, so for those who do, that was a shit show this weekend.
- 35:05Yeah, man, they they found a way to piss off.
- 35:10So many people. So many people and, and I mean,
- 35:12you know, you can, you can point fingers all you want to I think
- 35:16you know, both of them have a role in it here.
- 35:18Oh fuck yeah. Oh, absolutely, absolutely.
- 35:21Both of them have a significant role in it and it's just the way
- 35:25of the world. It's just I this is the first
- 35:28time we ever saw it affect something.
- 35:30Oh, yeah, yeah. I mean, there's no, there's no
- 35:33good guys in this shit. They're all assholes.
- 35:35They're all, they're all just, you know, they want to get
- 35:36theirs and they don't give a shit about the customers on
- 35:40either side of the coin there. No, they don't do it at all.
- 35:44So, yeah, all righty. So there's that.
- 35:48Sometimes we can roll right through when things aren't not
- 35:52interesting per SE. But so, Brian.
- 35:57I think I know what you're going to ask me next.
- 36:03I've got a good idea. Well, the the question is, is do
- 36:11we do you think we have our next head football coach?
- 36:19I think we have our next head football coach if that coach
- 36:23wants to sign on the dotted line.
- 36:24I think we have done all that we can do from a offer standpoint
- 36:32to make this a job that that coach could and should take.
- 36:40The question is, does that coach and his agent think that there
- 36:43are better opportunities available for them elsewhere as
- 36:52the coaching carousel rages on? Well, and, and everybody had to
- 37:00be thinking about it because this thing started floating out
- 37:03there last week in and over the weekend.
- 37:05And then Auburn opens up Sunday. I don't think Auburn wants it.
- 37:10I don't think LSU wants it. I don't think Florida wants.
- 37:15I think Arkansas does, but I don't think he's going to go to
- 37:19Arkansas, so. And then you got whatever the
- 37:23fuck might or might not be going on at Florida State.
- 37:26OK, we've had the Florida State discussion and I'm going to say
- 37:30it aloud. I may have said it in the past.
- 37:33If Florida State fires Mike Norvell and gives Franklin the
- 37:37amount of money we think they'd have to give him to land there,
- 37:41they're going to have a few years of their NIL is going to
- 37:45be about half assed. Maryland's not open Phil.
- 37:50It was a scam from somebody and I don't think he goes to
- 37:53Maryland. I wouldn't go to Maryland.
- 37:56I wouldn't go to Maryland. The only thing good about
- 37:58Maryland is that the proximity to two of the nearest target, or
- 38:02so I've been told. Well, the other thing about
- 38:05Maryland is so you're going back into the Big 10 and now you're
- 38:09like the 13th best team, not the 4th.
- 38:13And their budget ain't there, their facilities ain't there.
- 38:17You can say what you want to say about it.
- 38:19I only he goes to Maryland. I think you soon, maybe.
- 38:25I mean hold on, this is where this is fun.
- 38:27This is why I like talking right now.
- 38:32Yeah, I don't. I don't think Maryland matters
- 38:35regardless, but it certainly doesn't matter right now because
- 38:40it's not an available job and I don't think they are savvy
- 38:44enough to start floating stuff out there with a potential hire
- 38:51until they've at least established what it's going to
- 38:55cost them to get out of where they're at and what what funds
- 38:59they would have to package together after the fact.
- 39:05There you go, Carolyn's broke and they would owe lastly Justin
- 39:10right at 13.5 million for about. So yeah, the coach in waiting
- 39:16and then he leaves and then they fire fridge and fridges, the
- 39:20mentor and everything. But you know, obviously
- 39:25everybody's reading reports, everybody's seeing things about
- 39:28what's going on. And the whole question is, it
- 39:32seems like a, you know, we all question the committee like is
- 39:37this the right way to go? I think they've hit it pretty
- 39:39spot on because I also think floating like this, like
- 39:44everything that's floating out there.
- 39:46Any if, if he leaves us at the fucking altar, which is
- 39:51possible, I, you know, I'm a pretty optimistic person, but
- 39:55it's very possible he leaves us at the altar.
- 39:57Well, then you're going to basically have your choice of
- 39:59anybody else. But you're not.
- 40:03You're not in any worse position than you were earlier and you
- 40:07took your best shot at arguably the best reasonable candidate
- 40:14for that position. And I say reasonable.
- 40:16I think there are potentially better candidates out there that
- 40:20you know, you if you throw enough money at are, you know,
- 40:23would be nice, but I don't think they had a chance of coming to
- 40:27Virginia Tech. So you you went with the most
- 40:30logical and best reasonable candidate and you did everything
- 40:34that you could to offer him the job as the next head coach of
- 40:39Virginia Tech. If that's not what he wants to
- 40:44do, then it is what it is. But I don't think it would be
- 40:48for lack of trying and packaging, at least from a
- 40:56financial standpoint, what was needed to go there.
- 40:58Now, if we want to talk, is he shying away because of some
- 41:04other structural components of Virginia Tech?
- 41:06That's obviously a different conversation and something we
- 41:08can address, but I think as as constructed currently, I think
- 41:13that the committee has done about as good as they could do
- 41:17given the hand that they were dealt.
- 41:19Yeah, given the hand they were dealt, but laying it on the
- 41:22table like they've effectively what people are saying, reports
- 41:27are saying has been laid out to him.
- 41:28First of all, I don't think anywhere else he'd have as much
- 41:33control because I think they're giving him the keys and saying
- 41:36do whatever you want to do with it because it's yours.
- 41:41Hire whoever you want to hire, GM, whatever, it's yours.
- 41:48I don't think he gets that anywhere else.
- 41:50Yeah, I honestly don't. But as far as it goes, can we do
- 41:57anything else? Well, who's out there?
- 41:58Does he want to take it off? I'm going to put this up here
- 42:04real quick. I don't necessarily think it's
- 42:06an ego shop. Jim, First of all, he's got his
- 42:10recruiting footprint and that does matter.
- 42:14It really does matter. The second thing is we're a
- 42:21passionate fan base. We have some crazies.
- 42:24I think somewhere like Florida, LSU hired, and the first thing
- 42:28about 90% of their fan base would say is why the fuck do we
- 42:31hire a damn Big 10 retread? That's the first thing they'd
- 42:36say. That's out the gate.
- 42:37That's that's not that's before you even talk about the big game
- 42:42and, or, or and even even beyond that, the expectations that come
- 42:48attached with even second tier SEC jobs.
- 42:54What would that to me? It's not.
- 42:55Second, the Arkansas's 1/3 tier SEC job.
- 42:59I'm, I'm talking about, I'm talking about LSU and Auburn.
- 43:02LSU is first tier. LSU has a ton of money,
- 43:06passionate fan base, great recruiting territory.
- 43:09Them in Florida are Tier 1. Auburn's a Tier 2.
- 43:14That's my opinion. Yeah, I mean, I can agree with
- 43:17that. LSU is 1 though.
- 43:20But also, I don't think LSU, first of all, y'all thought we
- 43:25had a shit show in Blacksburg with everything going on.
- 43:29Please tell me you want to make yourself feel good about
- 43:31Virginia Tech's athletic department.
- 43:33Go read what's going on down at LSU because good Lord almighty,
- 43:40I read and listened like, yeah, this is good.
- 43:44The other thing is, and Brian, I want to discuss this.
- 43:48It's, I think it's second hand, but it's rumors potentially the
- 43:52reason he got fired from Penn State is Penn State's AD
- 43:56meddling in what players he felt they should go after.
- 44:00And there was a story report saying, hey, James, we should be
- 44:07going after these players. I hate Whip Babcock, but I don't
- 44:11think Whip Babcock would ever have the balls to do that to any
- 44:14of his head coaches that he's had over all few years.
- 44:17So. Yeah.
- 44:19I agree. So well, let's talk.
- 44:22We got we got a little time because you know, again, the
- 44:24game is what we thought it was going to be.
- 44:26Nothing crazy. If you have to say right now,
- 44:32let's go through the big jobs, who do you think is going to
- 44:40take? Who do you landing on with like
- 44:43Florida right now? Like if you had to say, that's
- 44:48going to be Florida's guy. Man, I don't know that's, that's
- 44:56really that's really tough because I mean, it's one of
- 45:03those jobs that like it's, it's tier one.
- 45:05There's a lot, a lot of benefits there, but it's such a difficult
- 45:10place to I think win consistently because of the
- 45:16competition for recruits within the footprint, the expectations
- 45:19that the program has. I don't know man, I don't know
- 45:26what what are you leaning for so far?
- 45:31I've said this a couple times, if Lane Clifton wants it, it's
- 45:35his, but the. Reasons.
- 45:39I just said I don't know if Lane Kiffin wants it.
- 45:41Well, that's the whole thing. That discussion here in this
- 45:43week is almost is always not been considered a top tier job.
- 45:49And I also think if Lane stays there and if he keeps doing what
- 45:55he's doing, that fan base, he's got job security for four to six
- 46:00years, he'd have to really start stinking up the joint to
- 46:06effectively get fired. Where in Florida he could go
- 46:09down there and pull close to what Dan Mullen did and be out
- 46:13in a heartbeat. So I'm kind of off the lane
- 46:16train to Florida and it's going to this might shock you.
- 46:22I really think, really think it's going to be goalish from
- 46:28USF, OK. I think he fits it.
- 46:31I think especially being being a defense or offensive coordinator
- 46:35for Tennessee, I think that's probably where they're going.
- 46:39He's been at South Florida a few years now, probably understands
- 46:42the culture of the high schools down there, especially South
- 46:47Florida being a smaller floor school.
- 46:49You know you're going to be recruiting the state even
- 46:51heavier than a Florida does because you're trying to find
- 46:54all the three stars and all the diamonds in the rough.
- 46:57So I think it's going to be Alice Goldish there.
- 47:04I can definitely see that. I can see that playing out
- 47:07exactly like you said there. Yeah, Makes a lot of sense from
- 47:11a footprint standpoint, you know, having history down there.
- 47:14But it's, yeah, I, I think it's still probably going to come
- 47:20down to whether Lane wants it or not.
- 47:22It is, it is. And he's got to make that
- 47:25decision. And and if Ole Miss opens up,
- 47:28then there's there's obviously residuals, but that's going to
- 47:33be in any case. Yeah, let me flip this one to
- 47:37you. I'll try to get you to answer of
- 47:42of the of the of the next three. I'm going to give you because
- 47:46these are to me Florida and LSU. You can replace one too of the
- 47:50next three tier, Penn State, LSU and Auburn.
- 47:54Who's more screwed? As far as I mean, Penn State,
- 47:59LSU or Auburn? Who's more screwed?
- 48:09It might be Auburn. OK.
- 48:12It might, it might be Auburn only because I think maybe
- 48:15pecking order wise, they're going to probably be be third
- 48:21there. At the same time you you pointed
- 48:25out LSU structurally is a dumpster fire.
- 48:29You've got Penn State having buyer's remorse or seller's
- 48:32remorse on the James Franklin deal.
- 48:38So you know, none of those situations are easy.
- 48:42All of them come with your expectations.
- 48:45I think at least when you look at the expectations for LSU,
- 48:54they'll probably have an easier job backing that up with with
- 48:59with output. Whereas I think when you look at
- 49:02some of the the struggles that an Auburn or a Penn State has,
- 49:06you know, they're they're you're going to have the same level of
- 49:08expectations, but you're going to be working with slightly,
- 49:12with one arm behind your back relative to the best of the
- 49:15competition in in your conference.
- 49:19So, you know, you're going to have to deal with that and still
- 49:21be expected to win 10 games every year.
- 49:25Yeah. See, I think Penn State's more
- 49:28because people are going to everything that happens at Penn
- 49:31State, it's going to be where they compared to James, Did they
- 49:38do this? Did they do this?
- 49:39I know Phil just put in there Brent Key going there.
- 49:42I mean, he's a good coach. The only thing I would question
- 49:46with him is that man, he never coached above Western Carolina
- 49:50day in his life and it is again a different beast.
- 49:55Oh, but what Jim put in there, Heartline, that's interesting.
- 50:02What first year OC gets a job? I mean, what do you think about
- 50:09that? You know what that would
- 50:16probably be for if I'm, if I'm Penn State, that might be a best
- 50:20case scenario considering what what hand I've kind of put
- 50:24myself in to this point. You know, I think you know it
- 50:32it's you're getting a little dicey because you're bringing in
- 50:35a first time head coach, but I think the connections that he
- 50:41has, he could put a a staff around him that would that would
- 50:44work out pretty good. Phil, you want us to hire a guy
- 50:48who's been an OC for one year to Ohio State and he's never
- 50:52coached anywhere but Ohio State? Hard pass Heart pass.
- 50:57He's not going to Wisconsin either.
- 50:59Maybe Jim, if you're right, you can come on here and stretch
- 51:02stuff in a month or so here. I, I get, I get people have
- 51:08strong feelings about Franklin, but at the same time, when you
- 51:13look at who is available and you look at who is realistic for
- 51:16Virginia Tech, it's hard to find a more capable candidate than
- 51:26James Franklin. Again, you might, you might
- 51:28think he's slimy, you might think he does that, but I'm OK
- 51:31if we go out and get a headhunter for two to four years
- 51:34and he's off to the next stop because I just want to win.
- 51:37Because once you start winning, it gets it's it's easier to
- 51:40keep. A lot easier, a lot easier.
- 51:43Can I throw a name for you? Nobody's talked about it.
- 51:45LSU, at least I haven't seen much.
- 51:48And it wouldn't be shocking because if you if you see him
- 51:51coaching, than he at he's a young guy.
- 51:55Kenny Dillingham from Arizona State tells you.
- 51:59I think he's psycho enough and crazy enough.
- 52:03He could probably handle that down there.
- 52:05Yeah. That wouldn't shock me.
- 52:09So it it's such a funny cycle because everybody else's G
- 52:15Fives, Summerall, Silverfield and and a lot of these guys are
- 52:27basically, you know, are basically getting 3 to $4
- 52:35million pay raises because they just mentioned their name.
- 52:39Like, hey, just float my name out there.
- 52:42Let's school here. So I think it's going to be like
- 52:49in a month, it's going to be really interesting to see where
- 52:54everything lands because I, I think UCLA and Stanford, they're
- 53:01going to stand pat. UCLA is so screwed up
- 53:04financially, they can't afford a big payday.
- 53:08I think Oklahoma State, I've told you it was one of our pigs
- 53:12last week. That North Texas head coach is
- 53:14going to take that kid up to Oklahoma State.
- 53:20Sure, Phil, you. Know what, Phil?
- 53:22That sounds reasonable. I would believe the first part
- 53:27of that more than the second part.
- 53:28I wouldn't read true. Let let me ask this to to you
- 53:34and then to everybody else. Those who are out here in the
- 53:38chat gem Phil Few above y'all is Jeff Brown going to leave
- 53:42Louisville because if he if he if he wins a few more games.
- 53:49Who? Yeah, that's a great question
- 53:57because I mean, I think it would take the the extremely correct
- 54:02fit and amount of money to get him to leave Louisville, but I
- 54:07think that that does potentially exist.
- 54:10Do we want to talk about what Jim just put out there?
- 54:13Sure. All right.
- 54:17What about our backup to Franklin, PJ Fleck or Chesney?
- 54:23OK. Of those 2GO Bob Chesney.
- 54:27You think so? Yeah, swing for the fences,
- 54:31don't don't swing for AC and I single.
- 54:37All right. And no disrespect, Fleck, he's
- 54:39done a good job at Minnesota. But I think a few things.
- 54:42First of all, he's coached nothing but the Midwest.
- 54:46It's a it's a Fuente type situation.
- 54:48Again, when it comes to recruiting and understanding
- 54:50what's around you, he's done nothing but Western Michigan in
- 54:54Minnesota, that's all he's coached at.
- 54:58Yeah. That is not footprint.
- 55:00That is not understanding the culture down here.
- 55:02I think he is a good coach, but I don't think it fits And and
- 55:07again. If we were going in that
- 55:09direction, I feel like, you know, I think Matt Campbell
- 55:13would make more sense than. Fuck yeah, he made more sense.
- 55:16At least he coached in southern part of Ohio versus way out
- 55:20there. Yeah.
- 55:24And that's no different. Like no disrespect.
- 55:27If if if Fleck ends up being the higher, I think you know it'll.
- 55:31I can live with it, but I. Can live with it, but it's it's
- 55:33not, it doesn't, I don't think it excites anybody.
- 55:36I don't think it's necessarily, it's not a ceiling raising move.
- 55:41It might be a floor raising move, but it wouldn't be a
- 55:43ceiling raising move. Well, if he does get hired,
- 55:49that's literally the first thing that has to happen.
- 55:53He has to go to the duck pond. He has to roll across it.
- 55:57Are we going to? Is he going to get a new new
- 55:59hashtag? What?
- 56:01No, Row the boat. Still works, just keep the keep
- 56:04row the boat. Row, row on the boat.
- 56:08The other thing is where was it? I think you're by your, your,
- 56:16your Bob Chesney move. I think it just a, the guy is a
- 56:26winner. That's it's, it's, it's, it's
- 56:29you know what? It's very similar to Kirk
- 56:32Signetti. Kirk Signetti started D31, he
- 56:37went to E lining 1. He won, he won, he won.
- 56:40And if you look at Chesney, 127 and 51, as a head coach, and he
- 56:46has roughly been a head coach since 2010.
- 56:53Me either. I'm, I'm with you there, Sean.
- 56:58It's. Not bullshit.
- 56:59Brian would get a orange sweater base on a room tie and a
- 57:02heartbeat on this show. No, I mean.
- 57:05I I not the tie. You pull it off.
- 57:08You pull off a sweater, bed and tie.
- 57:09You really could, That beard of yours?
- 57:13You know what? You flatter me, Curtis.
- 57:15You flatter me. All right, that's what.
- 57:18But But back to Chesney. I mean, it's nothing but
- 57:22winning. It's Let's see again.
- 57:26I, I, I like this concept, but at the same time, I like the
- 57:33idea of we have this money, let's actually put it to fucking
- 57:36use and not just get the next guy that we can get.
- 57:39I'm with you on that. And and I'm not I'm not saying
- 57:44anything's wrong with with that mindset, Steven, you know,
- 57:47putting out there Chesney wouldn't cost a lot either.
- 57:49Like I get that. But you won't throw your nuts on
- 57:52the table and say, listen, we're we're playing with big boy money
- 57:55now. Well, if it's, you know,
- 57:57chastity, I think you know, when you talk about the money coming
- 57:59in, he's not going to cost a lot, but he's what he's also not
- 58:01going to do is bring you in a lot of money.
- 58:04He's not a guy that's going to go out there and glad hand the
- 58:07donors out the gate. He's got to win eight games in
- 58:12the first two years before people are going to really open
- 58:15up their wallets now. And and beyond that, I don't
- 58:17know if if much, much less than that is going to get it done.
- 58:23So he's not going to get the immediate buy in from, from the
- 58:28donors, from a lot of the fan base that someone like James
- 58:33Franklin we get. And and then there's still other
- 58:36guys out there like, I mean, who thought?
- 58:41He must not be named he he wears a cock on his hat.
- 58:49Oh. No, no, pretty much.
- 58:53Per the South Carolina fan base, him firing Mike Schuler bought
- 58:56him a year. He did what he he did.
- 58:59Can I say it? And everybody in here is
- 59:02probably old enough to know this.
- 59:03He did what his daddy never could do.
- 59:07It's fair. I mean, I mean, how many, How
- 59:10many? Well, it took him how many
- 59:12years? It took him too long to do it.
- 59:19But no, it didn't though. Sheila just got hired this year.
- 59:22Well, no, I'm saying Frank. He still never fired the guy.
- 59:27Yeah, he kept him on staff. He demoted him.
- 59:32He demoted him. And he and he's took it and.
- 59:37And he took the demotion. So I mean, there's, there's, you
- 59:39know, you don't, you don't take a demotion if you don't think
- 59:43it's warranted. Yeah, there you go.
- 59:46There's still a lot of second options out there.
- 59:48And again, I think having the the one thing that's going to
- 59:52talk is money talks. And I think the the agents talk
- 59:57to each other. There's now probably a few
- 1:00:01people out there who would consider us because now they
- 1:00:04know. You know what?
- 1:00:05They can give you 9.7 million, they're going to.
- 1:00:08They can dump X amount of dollars into NIO into your
- 1:00:12assistant coaching pool. If anything, as crazy as it
- 1:00:17sounds, what the last two weeks has done is raise the profile of
- 1:00:22the program and of the job itself.
- 1:00:26It's true because we were able to bite early and because we got
- 1:00:31tied to James Franklin pretty early in the process.
- 1:00:35I mean, you got a lot of people talking about the Virginia Tech
- 1:00:37job and also not just talk about the Virginia Tech job, but
- 1:00:41talking about what that job means, what it's about, what
- 1:00:45they can, what we can offer. I think, you know, getting those
- 1:00:47things out into the sphere is going to raise the profile of
- 1:00:52the job overall to hopefully give us a little bit of a, you
- 1:00:58know, a better pool. If if Franklin ends up not being
- 1:01:03the guy I know that we already have potentially, you know,
- 1:01:07they, they talked about two to four names getting passed from
- 1:01:10the committee. I'm sure there's two to three
- 1:01:12guys that they've got that have been vetted that just haven't
- 1:01:17got into full on contract negotiations because we were
- 1:01:20dealing with Franklin. First, true.
- 1:01:23I'm going to make this real quick.
- 1:01:25Our our wonderful sponsor Jeremy made mention of this.
- 1:01:31Pete Masciato is the new mayor of Blacksburg.
- 1:01:35Hey. Big Pete, very well known as
- 1:01:39business friendly Pete, very well known as university
- 1:01:42friendly beat Salamander guy. Yep, that's who he is.
- 1:01:48I'm not saying his name. He's salamander guy that made
- 1:01:52that damn walk from Center St. a pain in the ass when he fucking
- 1:01:55stopped the wood off. Pete.
- 1:01:56Can I be? The first thing you do is open
- 1:01:58the woods back up from Center St. to Lane to make it a hell of
- 1:02:01a lot easier. Thank you.
- 1:02:03Oh. Man, Jeremy, Jeremy, just
- 1:02:06through Salamanders are back on the menu.
- 1:02:10That's good. Oh my gosh.
- 1:02:13So yeah. But the whole thing somebody may
- 1:02:17have mentioned, is there ever been a hire this early in the
- 1:02:19cycle? No.
- 1:02:22But there's also never been someone of James Franklin's
- 1:02:25caliber open this early in the cycle.
- 1:02:28Yeah. There just hasn't.
- 1:02:32There just hasn't been that. And there's still those, there's
- 1:02:35still your Jimbo's and guys like that who are out of coaching
- 1:02:38that won't back in. You know, listen, Brian's costly
- 1:02:44optimistic. I can be optimistic if if in a
- 1:02:48month I'm not optimistic we got real problems.
- 1:02:55Because I can talk, I guess. I guess that man, I'm, I'm, I'm
- 1:02:57going to be optimal. Whatever, whatever I'm dealt.
- 1:03:00I'm I'm going to, you know, look at it slightly on the the glass
- 1:03:03half full side, but I'm going to I'm, you know, still still keep
- 1:03:06it within the frame of reality. I'm not going to just put on the
- 1:03:10the Rose colored glasses and call it a day.
- 1:03:13But at the same time, I try to look for whatever our situation
- 1:03:20is, try to find the positives in it, find things that we can, you
- 1:03:24know, look at and, and hold on to as we move forward.
- 1:03:27And yeah, I'll do that whoever the coach is and, and we'll go
- 1:03:30from there. But obviously, I think if
- 1:03:34you're, if you're asking me right now if, if I'd be happy
- 1:03:37with James Franklin, if he ends up signing on the dotted line,
- 1:03:40I, I would say yes. I think that's probably the best
- 1:03:43candidate that's available right now that is a reasonable
- 1:03:48candidate that I think could come here and have some success
- 1:03:53out the gate. You know, I, I, I still wouldn't
- 1:03:57have a problem with, you know, put Mullen in there, but I don't
- 1:04:01know how feasible Mullen is at this point.
- 1:04:04When you look at some of the other candidates that we had
- 1:04:06talked about on here, it's really hard to see more than a
- 1:04:12handful potentially being in play.
- 1:04:16So I'm hoping that the the Franklin thing works out and if
- 1:04:19not, we'll see who those next, you know, two to three guys
- 1:04:22behind him are. Yeah.
- 1:04:26All right, let's go ahead, Brian.
- 1:04:29Let's talk some football because it has been got to say,
- 1:04:35regardless what you've been watching, the last like month
- 1:04:39has been extra entertaining in college football and it feels
- 1:04:43like it's always this way. This weekend there's again just
- 1:04:48good games all over the place. There's sneaky games and let's
- 1:04:55get some big screeners. Unfortunately, Brian had rough
- 1:04:58weekend. We're officially on the Fade
- 1:05:01sibling. You know what, man, it's been
- 1:05:05the last two weeks have not been good to me.
- 1:05:08They have not been good to me at all.
- 1:05:11I backed up AO for four, a big old doughnut with A1 for three,
- 1:05:18one in three-week. So it hasn't been a good run for
- 1:05:23me. I'm still not out of the out of
- 1:05:27the weeds here. I I still have some some
- 1:05:30potential ground to make up. I've got what we got, 5 weeks
- 1:05:35left. In the in.
- 1:05:38The regular season here. Hey listen everything football
- 1:05:42wise, Yahoo or picking is not being good for me.
- 1:05:45I just got, I just got to gain 2 games on, you know, Sheldon
- 1:05:49Tally every week going forward and I'm right back in it.
- 1:05:53Yeah. It's, it's been rough this year
- 1:05:55and the whole thing is it's we if there hadn't been a couple
- 1:05:59hooks, I think we'd probably all be close to 500, if not slightly
- 1:06:03over The hook is just yeah. Hired Tally.
- 1:06:05I'll be the. OC there you go.
- 1:06:08All right, there's what that is. Bunch of good games this week
- 1:06:13even though they couldn't be with us tonight.
- 1:06:15Shelton and Tally always making their picks.
- 1:06:18So let's start it. I got the first game as the
- 1:06:22Oregon Ducks go visit Iowa. Chinnick Hawkeye laying 5 1/2 or
- 1:06:29getting 5 1/2 at home. And there was one reason I
- 1:06:34picked the game the way I picked this game.
- 1:06:37It's a 330 kick, not a night game.
- 1:06:40Oregon wins by at least a touchdown.
- 1:06:44If this was a night game, I'll have taken the Hawkeyes in a
- 1:06:47heartbeat because bad things happen to rank teams.
- 1:06:50It cannot get night. It's true, and it's not a night
- 1:06:53game. So Sheldon Taliban, I'm ride
- 1:06:58with you as well. Donuts on the board, baby.
- 1:07:04So everyone now knows take Iowa and the points because we all
- 1:07:08picked. It if you ride with BCP, you're
- 1:07:13losing money. But if you fade us, you're rich.
- 1:07:18That's right. I think the only reason Tally
- 1:07:21chose this one this week is I think South Carolina's off,
- 1:07:23aren't they? They're off and I think he said
- 1:07:26one of these teams is firing a coach.
- 1:07:29That is exactly what he said. Shane ain't playing.
- 1:07:34Somebody's getting fired after this game, which I don't.
- 1:07:36Think whoever loses is getting fired, is what he said.
- 1:07:38I don't think anybody's getting fired because Dallas buyout is
- 1:07:42pretty big too. I don't know if it's $54 million
- 1:07:45big. Let let me look at that real
- 1:07:47quick. Yeah, Florida, Florida State has
- 1:07:49a buyout money problem and that's, and that's usually not a
- 1:07:52Florida State problem, but they put themselves in the situation
- 1:07:56where getting rid of their guy and getting a guy they actually
- 1:08:00want is going to be a problem. Ain't nobody firing anybody.
- 1:08:04You know what Dabo's buyout is? What you got?
- 1:08:06It's higher than NOR bells. No shit, it's 60 million.
- 1:08:12All right. Well, this is a.
- 1:08:14This is. A This is just the suck bowl.
- 1:08:17This is the suck bowl. The suck.
- 1:08:20Bowl with talented players. Exactly.
- 1:08:23Suck bowl with talented players. This is the purgatory of the
- 1:08:27college football. And and then this has been
- 1:08:29pointed out numerous times on social media network this week.
- 1:08:33The two teams who bitched threaten to sue and leave the
- 1:08:37ACC because they won't get enough money.
- 1:08:40You know this game is taking place TV wise.
- 1:08:44Where is it? ACC Network non meals been
- 1:08:46affected but. Serves them right.
- 1:08:52In Death Valley, Clemson land the 2 1/2 home spread as normal
- 1:08:57and Tally says. FSU.
- 1:09:02Brian. Says I went the other direction,
- 1:09:04man, I think you know, when we, when we talked about, I talked
- 1:09:08about earlier with the inconsistent play, I think
- 1:09:10Florida State is just way too damn inconsistent, especially on
- 1:09:14the offensive side of the ball. I think you're going to see
- 1:09:19Clemson not be good, but they'll be good enough.
- 1:09:22I am the exact opposite of you. I think against Wake Forest last
- 1:09:28week, I think Florida State found the mojo while Clemson
- 1:09:31lost the Duke in a 91 point game and they lost it in Death
- 1:09:40Valley. And you know, there's games that
- 1:09:44break people's wills. I I I think that might have been
- 1:09:46the game that broke the will, where vice versa, I think the
- 1:09:49weight game may woke up Florida State Knowles Shelton rides
- 1:09:54with. Clemson.
- 1:09:57Hope was he paying attention to your picks?
- 1:10:00He probably wouldn't. If he was, he did the wrong
- 1:10:04thing. Why Shelton?
- 1:10:06Why? All righty, next.
- 1:10:11Sneaky. Sneaky.
- 1:10:13Good game Saturday night. Sneaky.
- 1:10:15It's creeping in there. I mean, I almost picked this
- 1:10:19one, but I I don't because for some reason Shelton pays
- 1:10:23attention to BYU significantly. I don't know why he's mentioned
- 1:10:28it in the past, but this game, it's in Lubbock, high noon,
- 1:10:33SO11-O clock start, which if I was Texas Tech, I'd be
- 1:10:38absolutely dismayed because this is this is the stupidity of Fox
- 1:10:44or that this is ABC has this game.
- 1:10:46This is a stupidity of ABC. This is like the biggest game of
- 1:10:50the week. This should not be a noon kick.
- 1:10:53It should not be even close to a noon kick.
- 1:10:56If you look at other top 25 matchups, the night games are
- 1:11:01It's like LSU, Alabama is the night game.
- 1:11:04LSU is dead in the water. Alabama somehow that ranked four
- 1:11:08even though they lost to a four loss.
- 1:11:09Team losses don't matter. It's just who your name is.
- 1:11:15Texas Tech leads 9 1/2 Shelton rides with.
- 1:11:21Texas Tech. Guns up, he says.
- 1:11:23Tally. TT.
- 1:11:27Guns up. Hey that that 9 1/2 is fishy to
- 1:11:31me. That 9 1/2 is fishy to me.
- 1:11:33Well with well, it's it put it up there especially to me too.
- 1:11:39BYU is unbeaten and I know you can look at strength of
- 1:11:42schedule, staying at the record and all that stuff.
- 1:11:44It's like, well, who have they played?
- 1:11:46And it's like, well, you know what, There ain't no, they may
- 1:11:50not have the best of who they played, but getting out and 1/2
- 1:11:55is a ton. I don't know who wins the game
- 1:11:58honestly if this was a night game I I might could see Texas
- 1:12:02Tech beaten by 10 but a but a a day game that just sucks.
- 1:12:08Top 10 matchup noon day game. Get out of here, ESPN.
- 1:12:13Just get out. Yeah.
- 1:12:15I I can't believe they're doing that again, but you know.
- 1:12:19It's just like, you know? But they did.
- 1:12:24They don't have the right logos man.
- 1:12:26They don't. They don't have the right logos.
- 1:12:29Alrighty, last one, Miss Sigler. Hey, man, I saw this.
- 1:12:36I was like, you know what the, the, the, the line on this alone
- 1:12:40is? It's kind of funny funny as
- 1:12:43well. Mizzou getting 6 1/2 at home.
- 1:12:51I like A&M in this one. I think if if this was 7 1/2 I
- 1:12:58would have went Mizzou. If this was 7 I probably would
- 1:13:00have went Mizzou. 6 and a hook I'm going to go.
- 1:13:07A&M here, by the way. Yes, the starting quarterback
- 1:13:12for Missouri has been out. I think he's been ruled out with
- 1:13:15this game. It feels like this is what Texas
- 1:13:19A&M does. They get to 8 and O, they get to
- 1:13:217 and O and there and there is a game they should win and they
- 1:13:27just don't. And I think give me getting
- 1:13:32points at home, I'll take Mizzou all.
- 1:13:34Right. Shelton is riding with you, and
- 1:13:38Tally, for whatever reason, decided he was going to ride
- 1:13:41with me on this one, and I think it's solely because Mizzou's
- 1:13:45quarterback is. Out Mizzou's quarterback it's
- 1:13:47funny we we all voted the same old Oregon and each of us rode
- 1:13:50with you on one of our. You know what man, y'all are
- 1:13:54rolling the dice. Every single one of us, it's
- 1:13:57like we didn't fade you. Like, you know, I can't keep
- 1:13:59being wrong. Eventually, it's got to be
- 1:14:01right. Hey, at least you know,
- 1:14:03potentially I can make up some ground on somebody as I'm going.
- 1:14:06I should at least make up, you know, if I, if I get things
- 1:14:09right, I can make up one game on everybody you can.
- 1:14:11Make one game upon everybody. Exactly, exactly.
- 1:14:14All right, so there that is. Let me go to Twitter like you
- 1:14:19know, nothing's came out as it on election night.
- 1:14:25I mean, other than the, you know, Pete, Pete nailed it.
- 1:14:29So in, in Blacksburg. So that's, that's a, that's,
- 1:14:34that's a good deal. I think.
- 1:14:36You know, you, you talk about, you know, bar friendly, business
- 1:14:39friendly, university friendly, infrastructure friendly.
- 1:14:44Yeah, it's it's what you need. It's what you need right here.
- 1:14:48It's it's a big win for if you are a fan of Virginia Tech, the
- 1:14:52school, love the town of Blacksburg, you want to see it
- 1:14:55grow and figure out how to do things versus just sitting on
- 1:14:58your hands like some people have been doing really good thing,
- 1:15:05really good thing. All right.
