Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: We welcome you back here on a Monday.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Labor Day holiday, but we're glad to be with you here.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Craig Way alongside the producer, Jay Kerman. Nothing like a
- 0:18Speaker 2: little Paul Simon with going to Graceland. Not going exactly
- 0:21Speaker 2: to Graceland, but we are going to Memphis there to
- 0:24Speaker 2: visit with a longtime friend of mine and the voice
- 0:26Speaker 2: of the Memphis Tigers, Dave Woloshin, who joins us now.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Wolow, great to see you. How are you, my friend?
- 0:32Speaker 3: Uh-oh.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Here we go. Your intro says Hall of Famer. Is
- 0:38Speaker 4: that correct?
- 0:39Speaker 3: I am.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I am a Hall of Famer.
- 0:42Speaker 5: How in the world is a Hall of Famer working
- 0:45Speaker 5: on Labor Day? They should be much more respectful than that.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I guess I could say you don't get to be
- 0:52Speaker 2: in the Hall of Fame unless you do work on holidays, right?
- 0:54Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I'll
- 0:57Speaker 1: tell you why.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Here's the simple explanation, Willow. Sark has his press conference
- 1:01Speaker 2: on Monday. So if they're all working, they got the
- 1:04Speaker 2: press conference on Monday, and I'm over on campus until
- 1:08Speaker 2: after one o'clock in the afternoon, and my show starts
- 1:10Speaker 2: at noon, I might as well just come.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Over here and do the show, you know, and give everybody.
- 1:13Speaker 1: There you go.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And so we hear from Sark, you know, on Mondays.
- 1:16Speaker 2: But I'm glad you joined us. And Dave and I
- 1:20Speaker 2: have known each other a long time. Wolo and I
- 1:21Speaker 2: go back, I guess, almost, it'd be an even 40 years,
- 1:25Speaker 2: wouldn't it?
- 1:26Speaker 1: I mean, was it 80?
- 1:27Speaker 3: 85.
- 1:27Speaker 4: 85 was when you came to Dallas.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:30Speaker 4: I met you at TRLD in Dallas. You were a youngster.
- 1:35Speaker 1: So were you.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I was young too.
- 1:38Speaker 2: We both worked at KRLD in Dallas there in 85
- 1:43Speaker 2: and 86.
- 1:44Speaker 1: You think about this, Roger.
- 1:45Speaker 2: You know, we'd like to talk about coaching trees that
- 1:51Speaker 2: Roy Williams, Dean Smith of the coaching tree, and John
- 1:53Speaker 2: Wood and all these great coaches at coaching trees. The
- 1:57Speaker 2: KRLD broadcaster coaching tree, even before Brad Champ, Frank Lieber,
- 2:02Speaker 2: the immortal Frank Lieber.
- 2:04Speaker 5: That's the guy that I replaced because of his– unfortunate
- 2:08Speaker 5: passing that's.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Exactly that's exactly right and and uh so so you
- 2:14Speaker 2: had frank lieber and verne lundquist working there and doing
- 2:18Speaker 2: cowboys games and then brad sham chuck cooperstein dave will
- 2:24Speaker 2: ocean and myself and george dunham and craig miller of
- 2:27Speaker 2: the ticket in dallas uh were with us as well
- 2:30Speaker 2: uh later.
- 2:31Speaker 5: On brian briscoe brian briscoe was also Kind of like
- 2:35Speaker 5: the fill-in guy.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Great producer.
- 2:38Speaker 4: And he went to the Motor Sports Way, right? The
- 2:41Speaker 4: Texas Motor Sports Way.
- 2:43Speaker 1: He did.
- 2:44Speaker 2: He worked at Texas Motor Speedway. Did that for years.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Now pretty much retired doing a podcast in Denton that's
- 2:54Speaker 2: called Built for This.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And it's really entertaining.
- 2:58Speaker 2: In fact, I'm going to put him in touch with you,
- 3:00Speaker 2: if you don't mind, because I know we'd love to
- 3:01Speaker 2: have you on his podcast.
- 3:02Speaker 4: No, I would love to chat with him.
- 3:04Speaker 5: I would tell you, you're not going to believe this,
- 3:06Speaker 5: but we were doing, I can't remember if the game
- 3:09Speaker 5: was in Memphis or somewhere in Texas, probably in Texas,
- 3:12Speaker 5: because Fran Fraschilla was doing the game on TV. His
- 3:17Speaker 5: wife comes up to me and she goes, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 5: I just love listening to you. You were part of
- 3:22Speaker 5: the dream team. She considered that group of 85 a
- 3:27Speaker 5: dream team. And if you think about it, Cooperstein, you, me,
- 3:30Speaker 5: we're still all working. And so is Sham.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Yeah. How about Brad? They're going along. Yeah, it's amazing.
- 3:37Speaker 2: You're mentioning the former Meg O'Connell, Meg Fraschilla, Fran's wife.
- 3:41Speaker 2: And at the time, Meg was working in the Southwest
- 3:45Speaker 2: Conference Media Relations Office. That's how she got to know us.
- 3:49Speaker 2: That's how she got to know us. Meg worked in
- 3:51Speaker 2: the Southwest Conference Office and then met Fran later when
- 3:55Speaker 2: Fran was coaching and.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Married Fran. And they had two sons and yeah, great
- 4:00Speaker 1: people as well.
- 4:01Speaker 2: So the reason I wanted Wolo on the show today
- 4:05Speaker 2: was not to talk about our indoor soccer backgrounds, because
- 4:08Speaker 2: we both have that. Wolo was the voice of the
- 4:11Speaker 2: Memphis Rogues, and I was the voice of the Dallas
- 4:13Speaker 2: Sidekicks for a time.
- 4:14Speaker 4: And don't forget the Memphis Americans. That was the first
- 4:18Speaker 4: one that.
- 4:20Speaker 3: I did.
- 4:21Speaker 4: That was an MISL team. That took on Dallas. Who
- 4:24Speaker 4: was the guy?
- 4:24Speaker 5: There was a great player at Dallas. It was while
- 4:28Speaker 5: we were in Dallas. Short guy.
- 4:32Speaker 1: You're talking about the wonderful.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Antonio Carlos Pecorari, who we all knew as Tattoo.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Tattoo, that's it, yes.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Tattoo is coaching now. He's coaching, yes.
- 4:43Speaker 4: So you called me to talk about my Cubs. I'm
- 4:45Speaker 4: very sad today. They blew.
- 4:47Speaker 5: A 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth and
- 4:50Speaker 5: lost 4-3.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Oh, I saw Zephyr John let it get away.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I saw Zephyr John let it get away from
- 4:56Speaker 2: him when me as the Dodger fan is wanting to
- 4:58Speaker 2: see L.A.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Make up ground on Milwaukee there.
- 5:01Speaker 2: So I was rooting for the Cubs today as well.
- 5:02Speaker 2: But the reason I asked Wolo on the program today
- 5:06Speaker 2: is not any of the stuff we've just talked about,
- 5:08Speaker 2: although it's great to catch up. How many years now
- 5:12Speaker 2: for you is the voice of Memphis Tigers?
- 5:15Speaker 5: Well, I came back from Dallas to start doing basketball
- 5:18Speaker 5: and football for them on television. And then, I don't know,
- 5:21Speaker 5: I think it was 98 I transitioned over after doing
- 5:24Speaker 5: a bunch of ESPN stuff.
- 5:26Speaker 4: I transitioned over to radio. And so that's, you know,
- 5:30Speaker 4: really 86. Go back there. So we're talking 40 years.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay. The reason why I also bring this up.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I've watched and listened, by the way, to Wolo call
- 5:48Speaker 2: the first two games of this football season for the
- 5:50Speaker 2: Memphis Tigers. And I got a chance to hear and
- 5:56Speaker 2: watch with the zero week win over UNLV. And then
- 6:01Speaker 2: the other night driving home after the Texas-Texas State game,
- 6:05Speaker 2: I'm listening to you, I picked you up on SiriusXM,
- 6:08Speaker 2: when you're playing Arkansas State.
- 6:10Speaker 1: And the Tigers won a couple of ball games now.
- 6:12Speaker 2: So Memphis, one of the few teams that you could
- 6:16Speaker 2: even have in a conversation to talk about the possibility
- 6:19Speaker 2: of being in the college football playoff, that's 2-0.
- 6:22Speaker 1: USC is there. Florida State can get there tonight if
- 6:24Speaker 1: they win.
- 6:25Speaker 2: But USC, I think, I would submit, has a much
- 6:29Speaker 2: more difficult path to try to get to the playoff
- 6:32Speaker 2: existing in the Big Ten and having to deal with
- 6:35Speaker 2: the likes of Ohio State and Penn State and Indiana
- 6:37Speaker 2: and those.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Of course, Memphis, a G6 school, is in the American.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Not to say it's an easy path because you have
- 6:45Speaker 2: to go to what many consider to be the favorite
- 6:48Speaker 2: to be the one automatic out of the G6, Boise State.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Well, the gamblers in Vegas agree with you. They made
- 6:55Speaker 5: it an eight and a half point game after it
- 6:57Speaker 5: opened up.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Did they? Okay.
- 7:02Speaker 2: But we'll get to that in a moment, but I
- 7:04Speaker 2: want to get your thoughts on this Memphis team, which,
- 7:06Speaker 2: you know, I was, I was listening to you describe
- 7:11Speaker 2: the exploits on the field and a tremendous game from
- 7:17Speaker 2: Jalen Carter who ran for 183 yards. And before we
- 7:21Speaker 2: even get to that, you're on a new head coach
- 7:24Speaker 2: and Charles Huff is Not only is the new head
- 7:27Speaker 2: coach at Memphis, Charles Huff is on his third head
- 7:31Speaker 2: coaching job in his many years. So he's been the
- 7:33Speaker 2: turnaround guy at Marshall, at Southern Miss, and now at Memphis.
- 7:39Speaker 2: So how has it gone so far with Coach Huff
- 7:41Speaker 2: and him getting acclimating and getting the program off.
- 7:44Speaker 1: To a good start?
- 7:46Speaker 5: Well, yeah, there were many questions, Marshall. I really did
- 7:49Speaker 5: not know what to expect going into Vegas. You got
- 7:53Speaker 5: 81 new players. 81. 61 transfers and 20 freshmen. You
- 8:00Speaker 5: did have a bunch of those transfers that came from
- 8:02Speaker 5: that Southern Miss school. And no one was able to
- 8:07Speaker 5: go from Marshall to Southern Miss to Memphis because they
- 8:10Speaker 5: ran out of eligibility.
- 8:11Speaker 4: But those players love Charles Huff. They really do.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Charles is a Nick Saban disciple. He also learned from
- 8:19Speaker 5: James Franklin. So he says he learned all about recruiting...
- 8:26Speaker 5: and how to work boosters from Franklin, he learned about
- 8:32Speaker 5: the process from Saban.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Part of that is you don't learn very much at all.
- 8:37Speaker 4: So I had no idea.
- 8:40Speaker 5: I had no depth chart until the night before the game.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Oh, my goodness.
- 8:46Speaker 4: We had a thought about how it was going, but
- 8:48Speaker 4: that's it.
- 8:49Speaker 5: And by the way, you know when Arkansas State give
- 8:51Speaker 5: us their depth chart?
- 8:54Speaker 4: For the game on Saturday? Yeah. Literally five minutes before
- 8:59Speaker 4: the game. So, you know, you can find out ways.
- 9:01Speaker 5: There's ourlands.com, and you talk to the other broadcasters, and
- 9:05Speaker 5: they'll give you some, but they can't give you everything.
- 9:08Speaker 5: And a kid that you know, that Owens kid, Trey Owens,
- 9:13Speaker 5: was a backup attack. He's a junior. I guess he
- 9:15Speaker 5: couldn't beat out Arch. He was the number 16 quarterback
- 9:18Speaker 5: prospect ever. Of the class of 24 when he went
- 9:21Speaker 5: to Texas. We didn't know if it was going to
- 9:24Speaker 5: be him. Butch Jones said it could be four guys.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Four guys, come on now.
- 9:29Speaker 5: But that's the way it is. But we didn't know
- 9:31Speaker 5: anything about Huff. Huff is a great orator without telling
- 9:34Speaker 5: you a whole lot. Until finally we went to this
- 9:38Speaker 5: production meeting. That was with Tim Brando. Because the way
- 9:42Speaker 5: it works is you don't get coordinators. And in your
- 9:46Speaker 5: production meeting, it's always going to be TV and radio.
- 9:48Speaker 5: So you've got to share your time kind of. And
- 9:50Speaker 5: it's hard to share with Tim Brando. Love the guy,
- 9:52Speaker 5: but it takes him about 20 minutes to ask one question.
- 9:57Speaker 5: um but we did find out some stuff then and
- 10:01Speaker 5: um you can't help but like charles soft he is
- 10:04Speaker 5: a good football coach when he tells you about the
- 10:07Speaker 5: strategy and why he's doing this and why he's using
- 10:09Speaker 5: this guy and what he expects and how that's overrated
- 10:13Speaker 5: and you understand that.
- 10:15Speaker 4: He really knows X's and O's, and he knows.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Motivation, or he couldn't get these kids to keep following him.
- 10:22Speaker 5: So I'm really impressed with that. I had no idea.
- 10:25Speaker 5: Memphis' defense won the game in Las Vegas. It was
- 10:30Speaker 5: really their offense and their offensive line. So the two lines... O-line,
- 10:34Speaker 5: D-line have really been the factors in the game against
- 10:37Speaker 5: Arkansas State. They just took over, and they trained at
- 10:40Speaker 5: 30 yards, rushing to 200-yard runners.
- 10:42Speaker 4: You mentioned Jalen Carter and Manny Covey.
- 10:45Speaker 5: So Manny Covey's a kid that came from the University
- 10:48Speaker 5: of Cincinnati, had a great game in the AutoZone Liberty
- 10:52Speaker 5: Bowl the year before, liked the stadium, and I guess,
- 10:55Speaker 5: I don't know how he knew Huff, but he did,
- 10:57Speaker 5: or maybe knew Kevin Decker, who was the OC that
- 11:01Speaker 5: came from Old Dominion, he's really a bright guy. He
- 11:05Speaker 5: had actually been a.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Player for Tim Cramsey, who's the OC at Arkansas that
- 11:11Speaker 4: was Memphis' OC for the last four or five years.
- 11:14Speaker 5: So it's a similar offense, but it's even more spread out.
- 11:17Speaker 4: It's really fun to watch.
- 11:19Speaker 5: But it's the line play on both sides that has
- 11:22Speaker 5: impressed me so far. But they haven't seen a team
- 11:26Speaker 5: as good as the guys that almost upset Oregon today.
- 11:31Speaker 5: Boise is really good. They got two good running backs.
- 11:35Speaker 5: They got a really good quarterback. Memphis beat Boise a
- 11:37Speaker 5: few years ago.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I think it was 23. And believe it or not,
- 11:41Speaker 4: the kid was there then. He was a freshman. And
- 11:44Speaker 4: Memphis got a pretty good lead on them.
- 11:46Speaker 5: And they just changed quarterbacks to see what would happen
- 11:48Speaker 5: in the second half.
- 11:49Speaker 4: And Madsen almost brought them all the way back.
- 11:52Speaker 5: So, you know, this game is a tough game that
- 11:55Speaker 5: Bluefield is hard to play on for visitors. They're really
- 11:59Speaker 5: good there. It's their 40th anniversary. Their record over 40
- 12:02Speaker 5: years is pretty darn impressive. And it's a little like Vegas.
- 12:07Speaker 5: I mean, Vegas was about a six and a half,
- 12:09Speaker 5: seven and a half point favorite. And that's what Boise
- 12:12Speaker 5: is right now. So who knows?
- 12:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Tell me a little bit about Marcus Stokes, what you
- 12:19Speaker 2: saw out of him at quarterback.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Boy, Marcus Stokes was so nervous.
- 12:26Speaker 5: In that first game. He threw his first two passes
- 12:31Speaker 5: into the dirt.
- 12:33Speaker 1: That sounds like Arch Manning last year in Columbus.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 12:39Speaker 5: And then toward the end of the first half, he
- 12:42Speaker 5: runs over the line and throws the football. He went
- 12:47Speaker 5: over the line of scrimmage and threw the football. So
- 12:50Speaker 5: he had really lost his awareness a little bit. And
- 12:53Speaker 5: of course, the.
- 12:56Speaker 3: The pass was completed.
- 12:57Speaker 5: I'm going, of course the pass was completed. The guy
- 12:59Speaker 5: that was covering the receiver came.
- 13:01Speaker 4: To tackle you.
- 13:04Speaker 5: But then in the second half, he really, he steadied himself.
- 13:08Speaker 4: And he played pretty well. I thought he played fair.
- 13:12Speaker 5: I don't think we've seen the best of him yet,
- 13:15Speaker 5: but he played a couple of touchdown passes, but he
- 13:17Speaker 5: threw two picks. So we'll just have to wait and
- 13:20Speaker 5: see how he plays out.
- 13:23Speaker 2: You mentioned the line play in the interior lines on
- 13:26Speaker 2: both sides.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Do you feel good about the defense? I mean, they've
- 13:29Speaker 1: given up.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Some points in the game, but on the road at
- 13:32Speaker 2: UNLV was going to be tough, and they held the
- 13:34Speaker 2: line late in the ballgame and then did so as well,
- 13:37Speaker 2: stopping Arkansas State down the stretch.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Had him there. I'll tell you what. Let's do this.
- 13:43Speaker 2: We'll take a break, and we'll get him back, and
- 13:47Speaker 2: we'll get a few more minutes out of him before
- 13:48Speaker 2: we wrap up here. here on a Monday afternoon on
- 13:51Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 13:55Speaker 6: All right, so we've re-established the long-distance connection here with
- 14:06Speaker 6: the voice of the Memphis Tigers.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Dave Woloshin joins us now.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Well, I was right in the middle asking you about
- 14:12Speaker 2: how you felt about the.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Can I just say something really quick?
- 14:15Speaker 4: I love that song.
- 14:16Speaker 3: I do like the Chuck Berry version better, just so
- 14:19Speaker 3: you know.
- 14:19Speaker 4: If I'm ever on again, I agree.
- 14:21Speaker 3: And you do that.
- 14:21Speaker 1: All right.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Next time, you'll get the original from Chuck Berry instead
- 14:25Speaker 2: of the Johnny Rivers rendition.
- 14:28Speaker 3: I have no disrespect for Johnny Rivers.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Believe me.
- 14:32Speaker 1: That's true.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Maybe we should restrict Johnny Rivers to Secret Agent Man
- 14:37Speaker 2: and some things like that. Slow dance and sway into
- 14:42Speaker 2: the music, stuff like that as well.
- 14:44Speaker 3: I love that song.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I was just starting to ask him when we had
- 14:49Speaker 2: the dropout. I was starting to ask you how you
- 14:51Speaker 2: felt about the defense. Gave up some points in each
- 14:54Speaker 2: of the first two ballgames for the Tigers, yet got
- 14:57Speaker 2: stops certainly down the stretch in the second half of
- 14:59Speaker 2: the game when you had to have it.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Well, that's it.
- 15:02Speaker 3: They have been a second-half team. Memphis has outscored the
- 15:06Speaker 3: opposition in the second half, 41-14. And I think a
- 15:10Speaker 3: lot of that, Craig, and this is what Huff has
- 15:13Speaker 3: preached all year long, he does these training drills the
- 15:17Speaker 3: players have talked about that are just so tough. And they,
- 15:21Speaker 3: they just say, as, as they're doing it, they're, they've
- 15:25Speaker 3: all accepted his culture, right? I told you he's a
- 15:26Speaker 3: players coach and they really had come, you know, some have, have, have, uh,
- 15:31Speaker 3: transferred schools with him. Like he had 30 guys that
- 15:34Speaker 3: went from Marshall to Southern Miss, um, and the 18
- 15:37Speaker 3: from heat from Southern Miss to Memphis. Uh, Dan bought
- 15:41Speaker 3: into this. So, you know, he says to them, look, I'll,
- 15:44Speaker 3: I'll make you a better player. You'll win. If you
- 15:47Speaker 3: listen to what I say. And part of that is
- 15:49Speaker 3: you've got to be in the best shape of your life.
- 15:51Speaker 3: We're going to put weight on you or you're going
- 15:53Speaker 3: to lose weight. You're going to go on this diet.
- 15:55Speaker 3: You're going to do this training. You've got these, these
- 15:58Speaker 3: numbers and goals when, when it comes to weight training.
- 16:01Speaker 3: We've got these numbers and goals when it, when it
- 16:04Speaker 3: comes to cardio.
- 16:04Speaker 1: And weight.
- 16:07Speaker 3: They believe when the fourth quarter comes, the other team's
- 16:09Speaker 3: going to wilt, and so far that's been the case.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Memphis has just dominated the fourth quarter in both games,
- 16:16Speaker 3: and it's come from lines. You asked me specifically about
- 16:19Speaker 3: the defensive line. He's playing 10 different guys. He's got
- 16:22Speaker 3: two guys that are outstanding. One's a young guy who
- 16:26Speaker 3: played for Southern this last year named Elijah Kinsler. He's
- 16:31Speaker 3: a kid out of New Jersey, and he's the guy
- 16:34Speaker 3: they had to put weight on. He was like 230.
- 16:35Speaker 3: They list him now at 256. They said at one
- 16:39Speaker 3: point he got 260. And then there's this guy who
- 16:42Speaker 3: started in Texas. So you may know him. He went
- 16:46Speaker 3: to Arizona State and then to Southern, and his name
- 16:49Speaker 3: is Jamon Tapp. He's a kid out of Louisiana. He's
- 16:52Speaker 3: just a high-energy guy, and he's made him.
- 16:54Speaker 1: A good player.
- 16:55Speaker 3: There's an interesting thing that Huff said. He goes, and
- 16:59Speaker 3: so this guy was on his third school. Now he's
- 17:02Speaker 3: on his fourth, but his third school, he went to
- 17:04Speaker 3: Southern Miss. And Huff says, I'm really good with guys
- 17:10Speaker 3: who are on their last chance. I'm the guy you
- 17:13Speaker 3: want to play for if you're going to last chance
- 17:16Speaker 3: you need. Because I can relate to you and I
- 17:19Speaker 3: will make you better, but you've got to live by.
- 17:21Speaker 4: What I say. And he goes, most of the.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Time, it doesn't always work. Most of the time, because
- 17:25Speaker 3: they know it's their last chance, they're going to listen
- 17:29Speaker 3: to him and they buy in.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Well, and by the way, since that was two schools
- 17:33Speaker 2: ago when he was here, I see that he's changed
- 17:36Speaker 2: his name slightly. When he was here was Jamond. So
- 17:39Speaker 2: apparently going by Jamond now may have helped his game.
- 17:43Speaker 2: He was Jamond when he was here, and he was
- 17:46Speaker 2: a good player when he was here.
- 17:47Speaker 1: He's a guy caught up in a numbers game.
- 17:49Speaker 2: We've got an All-American playing on that same spot on
- 17:52Speaker 2: the rush end as a freshman two years ago came in,
- 17:55Speaker 2: Colin Simmons. who's a preseason All-American now, and that's right.
- 18:00Speaker 2: I think he just got caught up in the numbers game.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Let me ask you about this. I kind of build
- 18:07Speaker 2: this in talking about it today as saying that Memphis
- 18:10Speaker 2: might have as good a shot as any G6 team
- 18:15Speaker 2: to get into the playoff if, and this is obviously
- 18:18Speaker 2: the big if, if you win the game in Boise
- 18:20Speaker 2: this week. Because I look at the rest of your schedule.
- 18:23Speaker 2: You've got UT Martin, and then you've got an open day.
- 18:25Speaker 2: My goodness, Charlotte lost to the Citadel. They lost to
- 18:28Speaker 2: an FCS team over the weekend. moving the football at Duke,
- 18:34Speaker 2: and they lost. You have ECU at home. You do
- 18:37Speaker 2: have Army at home. You do have to go to
- 18:39Speaker 2: South Florida, but they're rebuilding with Golish having gone to Auburn.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Maybe that trip to Annapolis helps determine conference championship seeding
- 18:48Speaker 2: or something like that before you finish on Black Friday
- 18:50Speaker 2: against Temple. Do you see it in similar ways, Wolo,
- 18:54Speaker 2: if the Tigers are able to find a way to
- 18:56Speaker 2: get that win on the Smurf turf that they got
- 18:59Speaker 2: a shot to win run the table and get into
- 19:02Speaker 2: the American Championship game with a chance perhaps to play for.
- 19:05Speaker 1: A playoff spot?
- 19:07Speaker 3: Two thoughts. Yeah, I think since the college football playoff
- 19:12Speaker 3: expansion and the group of six has sort of been
- 19:17Speaker 3: now it's the best ranked group of six. Doesn't have
- 19:20Speaker 3: to be the champion like it used to be thanks
- 19:23Speaker 3: to the ACC and Duke last year.
- 19:24Speaker 4: I think this is.
- 19:28Speaker 3: The best draft at this time, the best G6 matchup
- 19:33Speaker 3: in the history of the separation between the P4 and
- 19:37Speaker 3: the G6 because UNLV was the second best G6 team
- 19:43Speaker 3: coming in. Memphis took care of them on the road.
- 19:46Speaker 3: A lot of people thought Memphis was the third and
- 19:49Speaker 3: Boise is number one and Boise didn't hurt their stock
- 19:53Speaker 3: by going to Oregon and being tied at the half
- 19:55Speaker 3: and being tied at 27 and losing by a touchdown.
- 19:58Speaker 3: So I think if you're Bob Arum and you're promoting
- 20:03Speaker 3: this game and This is maybe the greatest G six
- 20:07Speaker 3: matchup since the college football playoff expansion and the seat
- 20:11Speaker 3: at the table, because it's clearly defined. Now, these are
- 20:14Speaker 3: the two best teams at the moment. Now you mentioned
- 20:17Speaker 3: the American schedule, every tough game, although army looks like
- 20:22Speaker 3: they're a little bit better than maybe I thought they
- 20:24Speaker 3: put 59. I know it's on Brian, but you put
- 20:27Speaker 3: 59 on a team is pretty good. Um, Every other
- 20:31Speaker 3: game that the prognosticators preseason thought was tough is on
- 20:37Speaker 3: the road. You've got to go to USF. Brian Hartline
- 20:39Speaker 3: was the big hot hire because he was the OC
- 20:42Speaker 3: at Ohio State. You've got to go. to South, uh, to, uh, Tulane,
- 20:48Speaker 3: you got to go to Navy. And most people pick
- 20:51Speaker 3: Navy kind of to win this league. So, uh, even
- 20:54Speaker 3: though to me, they lost their quarterback, who was one
- 20:56Speaker 3: of the best they've ever had in Blake Corvette, they
- 20:59Speaker 3: lost their best tackler, uh, tackling machine and defensive lineman.
- 21:03Speaker 3: They lost their best running back and they best lost
- 21:07Speaker 3: their best receiver from last year. Now there's great continuity there. So, uh,
- 21:13Speaker 3: I don't know. You've got to play in Annapolis. That's
- 21:15Speaker 3: a tough place to play. So I would say to
- 21:18Speaker 3: you that Memphis' schedule in the conference is one of
- 21:21Speaker 3: the toughest, if not the toughest. But I don't think
- 21:24Speaker 3: they have to win every game. If they get the
- 21:26Speaker 3: leg up here and they only lose.
- 21:29Speaker 4: One, say, in conference, I think the winner.
- 21:32Speaker 3: clearly, of this Saturday game in Boise, has the leg
- 21:37Speaker 3: up on everybody in the G6 to make the playoffs.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Couldn't agree more. Hey, before I let you go, for
- 21:42Speaker 2: folks who don't know... Lola will be in town December 16th.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Memphis plays Texas in basketball. So tell me what kind
- 21:50Speaker 2: of team Penny Hardaway is going to bring in to Moody.
- 21:53Speaker 2: I see you've got two big-time exhibition games in Starkville
- 21:59Speaker 2: and Mississippi State against Arkansas in Fayetteville. Texas has to
- 22:04Speaker 2: play St. John's at Madison Square Garden. That's an exhibition game.
- 22:08Speaker 2: I think that's their one public exhibition. But what kind
- 22:11Speaker 2: of team is Penny Hardaway going to bring into Austin
- 22:14Speaker 2: in December?
- 22:15Speaker 3: That's another one of those. Every single player, well, there's
- 22:21Speaker 3: two guys on the team. One that was at the
- 22:24Speaker 3: end of the bench is a high-flying athletic guy. And
- 22:28Speaker 3: the other is a pretty good guy in Fedford. All
- 22:31Speaker 3: the other guys are new. You've got a kid named
- 22:34Speaker 3: Reed who went to Northwestern, but he played at USS.
- 22:37Speaker 3: I've seen him before. He's really a good point guard.
- 22:41Speaker 3: You've got some really good three-point shooters. And here's the caveat.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Here's what I think will make them a good team.
- 22:49Speaker 3: They've got a kid who will be 25 in December
- 22:51Speaker 3: named Popovich. He played in the Polish league prior. I
- 22:56Speaker 3: think he's Ukrainian. He is truly a pro, and we're
- 23:00Speaker 3: waiting on eligibility with him. They think they're going to
- 23:03Speaker 3: get that. He may have to sit on a few
- 23:05Speaker 3: games early in the year, but he's going to be
- 23:08Speaker 3: the key that really makes this team, I think, a
- 23:12Speaker 3: solid ball club. I think they'll be one of the
- 23:14Speaker 3: best in the American. How they will line up with you,
- 23:17Speaker 3: that's another story.
- 23:19Speaker 4: We'll see.
- 23:19Speaker 3: You've got to play in Austin, but I'm hoping that
- 23:22Speaker 3: that means that you guys come to Memphis the year
- 23:25Speaker 3: or two after.
- 23:26Speaker 1: I hope so.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I loved the one game I got to call there.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Two nights before Texas played USC for the national championship
- 23:36Speaker 2: in football, remember, was there when Texas played Memphis when
- 23:40Speaker 2: they had P.J. Tucker when they played there. That was
- 23:44Speaker 2: a heck of a ball game that night. I do
- 23:46Speaker 2: remember that very well. So you're telling me this guy
- 23:49Speaker 2: Popovich will be in a Memphis uniform if Lane Kiffin
- 23:53Speaker 2: doesn't get him through the portal first.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Can you believe what we're doing here?
- 24:00Speaker 2: The reason why I bring this up, for folks who
- 24:02Speaker 2: don't know, Dave also, like I do, hosts a daily
- 24:05Speaker 2: show in Memphis. And I can only imagine, because you're
- 24:08Speaker 2: only an hour away from Oxford, I can only imagine
- 24:13Speaker 2: what your show has been like over the past couple
- 24:16Speaker 2: of weeks, given everything that's gone down in the name
- 24:19Speaker 2: of the SEC and Lane Kiffin and LSU.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Well, Lane Kiffin is a magnet. You can't help but
- 24:25Speaker 3: watch him. he's like a car wreck. You know, you,
- 24:28Speaker 3: you want to turn away, but you can't. This is
- 24:31Speaker 3: a guy, he doesn't need more help. Look what he
- 24:34Speaker 3: did to Clemson.
- 24:35Speaker 1: My God.
- 24:37Speaker 4: And he's literally willing to.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Risk 50% of his budget, 50% of his games, because
- 24:46Speaker 3: they can suspend them for 50%.
- 24:49Speaker 4: And literally if, you know.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Greg Senkin, the SEC commissioner, has sued Lane Kiffin, sued LSU,
- 24:58Speaker 3: sued the administration. It's unbelievable. But he's saying, and everybody
- 25:03Speaker 3: in the league agreed, LSU has said, we're not allowing
- 25:07Speaker 3: players who have signed pro contracts... Back into the league.
- 25:11Speaker 3: You made your decision to go pro.
- 25:13Speaker 4: That's it.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Now, the European thing is a little different, Craig, because
- 25:16Speaker 3: they don't have a college system. So they put them
- 25:18Speaker 3: into the pros when they're 12 years old.
- 25:21Speaker 1: That's right.
- 25:21Speaker 3: To me, that's a little different story than a guy
- 25:25Speaker 3: like Daquan White or Zabian Harris, who said at the
- 25:29Speaker 3: end of their senior year, last year in Oxford, you
- 25:33Speaker 3: know what? We got a chance to make an NFL team.
- 25:35Speaker 3: We're going to go. And they signed a contract.
- 25:38Speaker 4: To play for those.
- 25:39Speaker 3: NFL teams respectively. And then because they can make more
- 25:45Speaker 3: money at LSU with Lane Kiffin and still go back
- 25:48Speaker 3: to the NFL, and they weren't guaranteed slots, they go, well.
- 25:52Speaker 4: Why wouldn't we go back?
- 25:54Speaker 3: And you know Kiffin, he's going to do whatever it
- 25:56Speaker 3: takes to win. But the commissioner is saying, don't do it.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Because if you do, here are the penalties. And, you know,
- 26:04Speaker 3: I thought the judge said, that made it an injunction
- 26:07Speaker 3: from a temporary to a full injunction. I thought he
- 26:10Speaker 3: was going to bail out Lane Kiffin by not allowing it,
- 26:15Speaker 3: but once he did, now the administration probably sat down
- 26:20Speaker 3: Lane Kiffin had said, hey, let's not take a chance
- 26:22Speaker 3: because these guys, look what happened with Texas Tech and Sorsby.
- 26:26Speaker 3: I mean, the league basically said, we.
- 26:28Speaker 4: Won't play you.
- 26:29Speaker 3: That could have happened with the SEC and Lane Kiffin.
- 26:32Speaker 1: No doubt about it.
- 26:33Speaker 2: By the way, since you're right about the Europeans coming in,
- 26:36Speaker 2: which gives you time to work on the pronunciations of
- 26:39Speaker 2: modus foca titus. and Montes Lorenzikas before you get here
- 26:42Speaker 2: in December.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Well, look, I did tennis. I did golf.
- 26:49Speaker 4: And I've done, I'm sorry, soccer.
- 26:52Speaker 3: With all those Czechoslovakian names, this is nothing.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Yeah, Lithuanians are easy, right? Hey, give my love to Gail.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Appreciate you taking the time. And I'll look forward to
- 27:05Speaker 2: seeing you in December. But best of luck up in
- 27:08Speaker 2: Boise this week. And I hope it goes really well
- 27:11Speaker 2: for you. And I appreciate you joining me today.
- 27:14Speaker 4: My pleasure.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Happy holiday to you and your loved ones. And I
- 27:18Speaker 3: can't wait to see you in December.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Okay. Thanks, Willow. You got it.
- 27:22Speaker 2: That's Dave Woloshin, play-by-play voice of the Memphis Tigers. We'll
- 27:25Speaker 2: be back to wrap up today's edition of the program
- 27:27Speaker 2: on 13 Under the Zone.
- 27:29Speaker 1: All right, Texas fans, game day checklist. Burnt Orange, check.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Radio on AM 1300.
