Speaker 1: Chapter four renewed invasion of savages. And now they had
• 0:05
Speaker 1: another broil with the three Englishmen, one of whom a
• 0:08
Speaker 1: most turbulent fellow, being in a rage at one of
• 0:11
Speaker 1: the three captive slaves because the fellow had not done
• 0:14
Speaker 1: something right which he bade him to do, and seemed
• 0:17
Speaker 1: a little untractable in his showing him, drew a hatchet
• 0:21
Speaker 1: out of a frog belt which he wore by his side,
• 0:24
Speaker 1: and fell upon the poor savage, not to correct him,
• 0:27
Speaker 1: but to kill him. One of the Spaniards, who was
• 0:30
Speaker 1: by seeing him, give the fellow a barbarous cut with
• 0:32
Speaker 1: the hatchet, which he aimed at his head but stuck
• 0:35
Speaker 1: into his shoulder, so that he thought he had cut
• 0:38
Speaker 1: the poor creature's arm off ran to him, and, entreating
• 0:42
Speaker 1: him not to murder. The poor man, placed himself between
• 0:45
Speaker 1: him and the savage to prevent the mischief. The fellow,
• 0:49
Speaker 1: being enraged the more at this, struck at the Spaniard
• 0:53
Speaker 1: with his hatchet and swore he would serve him as
• 0:55
Speaker 1: he intended to serve the savage, which the spaniard, perceiving,
• 0:59
Speaker 1: avoid the blow, and with a shovel which he had
• 1:02
Speaker 1: in his hand, for they were all working in the
• 1:05
Speaker 1: field about their corn land, knocked the brute down. Another
• 1:09
Speaker 1: of the Englishmen, running up at the same time to
• 1:11
Speaker 1: help his comrade, knocked the spaniard down, and then two
• 1:15
Speaker 1: Spaniards more came in to help their man, and a
• 1:18
Speaker 1: third Englishman fell upon them. They had none of them
• 1:21
Speaker 1: any firearms or any other weapons, but hatchets and other tools,
• 1:25
Speaker 1: except this third Englishman. He had one of my rusty cutlasses,
• 1:30
Speaker 1: with which he made at the last two Spaniards and
• 1:32
Speaker 1: wounded them both. This fray set the whole family in
• 1:36
Speaker 1: an uproar, and more help coming in. They took the
• 1:39
Speaker 1: three Englishmen prisoners. The next question was what should be
• 1:43
Speaker 1: done with them. They had been so often mutinous, and
• 1:46
Speaker 1: were so very furious, so desperate, and so idle with
• 1:49
Speaker 1: all They knew not what course to take with them,
• 1:53
Speaker 1: for they were mischievous to the highest degree, and cared
• 1:56
Speaker 1: not what hurt they did to any man, so that,
• 1:59
Speaker 1: in short, it was not safe to live with them.
• 2:02
Speaker 1: The Spaniard, who was governor, told them in so many
• 2:06
Speaker 1: words that if they had been of his own country,
• 2:08
Speaker 1: he would have hanged them. For all laws and all
• 2:11
Speaker 1: governors were to preserve society and those who were dangerous
• 2:15
Speaker 1: to the society ought to be expelled out of it.
• 2:18
Speaker 1: But as they were Englishmen, and that it was to
• 2:21
Speaker 1: the generous kindness of an Englishman that they all owed
• 2:24
Speaker 1: their preservation and deliverance, he would use them with all
• 2:27
Speaker 1: possible lenity, and would leave them to the judgment of
• 2:30
Speaker 1: the other two Englishmen who were their countrymen. One of
• 2:34
Speaker 1: the two honest Englishmen stood up and said they desired
• 2:38
Speaker 1: it might not be left to them, For says he,
• 2:41
Speaker 1: I am sure we ought to sentence them to the gallows.
• 2:44
Speaker 1: And with that he gives an account how will Atkins,
• 2:47
Speaker 1: one of the three, had proposed to have all the
• 2:49
Speaker 1: five Englishmen join together and murder all the Spaniards while
• 2:53
Speaker 1: they were in their sleep. When the Spanish governor heard this,
• 2:57
Speaker 1: he calls to will Atkins, how, Signor Atkins, would you
• 3:01
Speaker 1: murder us all? What have you to say to that?
• 3:04
Speaker 1: The hardened villain was so far from denying it that
• 3:07
Speaker 1: he said it was true and swore they would do
• 3:09
Speaker 1: it still before they had done with them. Well, but
• 3:12
Speaker 1: Signor Atkins, says the Spaniard, what have we done to
• 3:15
Speaker 1: you that you will kill us? What would you get
• 3:18
Speaker 1: by killing us? And what must we do to prevent
• 3:21
Speaker 1: you killing us? Must we kill you or you kill us?
• 3:24
Speaker 1: Why will you put us to the necessity of this?
• 3:27
Speaker 1: Signor Atkins says the Spaniard very calmly and smiling. Signor
• 3:32
Speaker 1: Atkins was in such a rage at the Spaniards, making
• 3:34
Speaker 1: a jest of it, that had he not been held
• 3:37
Speaker 1: by three men and withal had no weapon near him,
• 3:40
Speaker 1: it was thought he would have attempted to kill the
• 3:43
Speaker 1: Spaniard in the middle of all the company. This hair
• 3:45
Speaker 1: brained carriage obliged them to consider seriously what was to
• 3:49
Speaker 1: be done. The two Englishmen and the Spaniard who saved
• 3:53
Speaker 1: the poor savage were of the opinion that they should
• 3:55
Speaker 1: hang one of the three for an example to the rest,
• 3:58
Speaker 1: and that particular it should be he that had twice
• 4:01
Speaker 1: attempted to commit murder with his hatchet. Indeed, there was
• 4:05
Speaker 1: some reason to believe he had done it, for the
• 4:07
Speaker 1: poor savage was in such a miserable condition with the
• 4:10
Speaker 1: wound he had received that it was thought he could
• 4:13
Speaker 1: not live. But the governor Spaniard still said no, it
• 4:16
Speaker 1: was an Englishman that had saved all their lives, and
• 4:19
Speaker 1: he would never consent to put an Englishman to death,
• 4:22
Speaker 1: though he had murdered half of them. Nay, he said,
• 4:25
Speaker 1: if he had been killed himself by an Englishman and
• 4:28
Speaker 1: had time left to speak, it should be that they
• 4:31
Speaker 1: should pardon him. This was so positively insisted on by
• 4:36
Speaker 1: the Governor Spaniard that there was no gainsaying it. And
• 4:39
Speaker 1: as merciful counsels are most apt to prevail where they
• 4:42
Speaker 1: are so earnestly pressed, so they all came into it.
• 4:46
Speaker 1: But then it was to be considered what should be
• 4:48
Speaker 1: done to keep them from doing the mischief they designed.
• 4:51
Speaker 1: For all agreed Governor, and all that means were to
• 4:55
Speaker 1: be used for preserving the society from danger. After a
• 4:58
Speaker 1: long debate, it was agreed that they should be disarmed
• 5:02
Speaker 1: and not permitted to have either gun powder, shot, sword,
• 5:06
Speaker 1: or any weapon. That they should be turned out of
• 5:08
Speaker 1: the society and left to live where they would and
• 5:11
Speaker 1: how they would, by themselves, But that none of the rest,
• 5:15
Speaker 1: either Spaniards or English, should hold any kind of converse
• 5:18
Speaker 1: with them, or have anything to do with them. That
• 5:21
Speaker 1: they should be forbid to come within a certain distance
• 5:24
Speaker 1: of the place where the rest dwelt, and if they
• 5:27
Speaker 1: offered to commit any disorder, so as to spoil, burn, kill,
• 5:31
Speaker 1: or destroy any of the corn plantings, buildings, fences, or
• 5:35
Speaker 1: cattle belonging to the society. They should die without mercy,
• 5:39
Speaker 1: and they would shoot them wherever they could find them.
• 5:43
Speaker 1: The Humane governor, musing upon the sentence, considered a little
• 5:47
Speaker 1: upon it, and turning to the two honest englishmen, said, hold,
• 5:51
Speaker 1: you must reflect that it will be long ere they
• 5:53
Speaker 1: can raise corn and kettle of their own, and they
• 5:56
Speaker 1: must not starve. We must therefore allow improvisions. So he
• 6:00
Speaker 1: caused to be added that they should have a proportion
• 6:03
Speaker 1: of corn given to them to last them eight months,
• 6:06
Speaker 1: and for seed to sew, by which time they might
• 6:09
Speaker 1: be supposed to raise some of their own. That they
• 6:11
Speaker 1: should have six milch goats, four he goats, and six
• 6:15
Speaker 1: kids given them, as well for present subsistence as for
• 6:18
Speaker 1: a store. And that they should have tools given them
• 6:21
Speaker 1: for their work in the fields. But they should have
• 6:24
Speaker 1: none of these tools or provisions unless they would swear
• 6:27
Speaker 1: solemnly that they would not hurt or injure any of
• 6:29
Speaker 1: the Spaniards with them, or of their fellow Englishmen. Thus
• 6:34
Speaker 1: they dismissed them the society and turned them out to
• 6:37
Speaker 1: shift for themselves. They went away, sullen and refractory, as
• 6:41
Speaker 1: neither content to go away nor to stay. But as
• 6:45
Speaker 1: there was no remedy, they went, pretending to go and
• 6:48
Speaker 1: choose a place where they would settle themselves, and some
• 6:51
Speaker 1: provisions were given them, but no weapons. About four or
• 6:55
Speaker 1: five days after they came again for some victuals and
• 6:58
Speaker 1: gave the governor an account where they had pitched their
• 7:01
Speaker 1: tents and marked themselves out a habitation and a plantation.
• 7:05
Speaker 1: And it was a very convenient place, indeed, on the
• 7:08
Speaker 1: remotest part of the island northeast, much about the place
• 7:11
Speaker 1: where I providentially landed in my first voyage when I
• 7:15
Speaker 1: was driven out to sea in my foolish attempt to
• 7:17
Speaker 1: sail round the island. Here they built themselves two handsome huts,
• 7:22
Speaker 1: and contrived them in a manner like my first habitation,
• 7:25
Speaker 1: being close under the side of a hill, having some
• 7:28
Speaker 1: trees already growing on three sides of it, so that
• 7:32
Speaker 1: by planting others, it would be very easily covered from
• 7:35
Speaker 1: the site unless narrowly searched. For they desired some dried
• 7:39
Speaker 1: goat skins for beds and covering, which were given them,
• 7:42
Speaker 1: and upon giving their words that they would not disturb
• 7:45
Speaker 1: the rest or injure any of the plantations. They gave
• 7:48
Speaker 1: them hatchets, and what other tools they could spare, some peas,
• 7:52
Speaker 1: barley and rice for sowing, and in a word, anything
• 7:56
Speaker 1: they wanted except arms and ammunition. They lived in this
• 8:01
Speaker 1: separate condition about six months and had got in their
• 8:04
Speaker 1: first harvest, though the quantity was but small, the parcel
• 8:08
Speaker 1: of land they had planted being but little. Indeed, having
• 8:11
Speaker 1: all their plantation to form, they had a great deal
• 8:14
Speaker 1: of work upon their hands, and when they came to
• 8:17
Speaker 1: make boards and pots and such things, they were quite
• 8:20
Speaker 1: out of their element and could make nothing of it. Therefore,
• 8:24
Speaker 1: when the rainy season came on, for want of a
• 8:26
Speaker 1: cave in the earth, they could not keep their grain dry,
• 8:29
Speaker 1: and it was in great danger of spoiling. This humbled
• 8:33
Speaker 1: them much so they came and begged the Spaniards to
• 8:36
Speaker 1: help them, which they very readily did, and in four
• 8:39
Speaker 1: days worked a great hole in the side of the
• 8:41
Speaker 1: hill for them, big enough to secure their corn and
• 8:44
Speaker 1: other things from the rain. But it was a poor
• 8:47
Speaker 1: place at best compared to mine, and especially as mine
• 8:51
Speaker 1: was then, for the Spaniards had greatly enlarged it and
• 8:54
Speaker 1: made several new apartments in it. About three quarters of
• 8:58
Speaker 1: a year after this separation, a new frolic took these rogues, which,
• 9:02
Speaker 1: together with the former villany they had committed, brought mischief
• 9:06
Speaker 1: enough upon them, and had very near been the ruin
• 9:09
Speaker 1: of the whole colony. The three new associates began, it seems,
• 9:13
Speaker 1: to be weary of the laborious life they led, and
• 9:17
Speaker 1: that without hope of bettering their circumstances, and a whim
• 9:20
Speaker 1: took them that they would make a voyage to the
• 9:22
Speaker 1: continent from whence the savages came, and would try if
• 9:26
Speaker 1: they could seize upon some prisoners among the natives there
• 9:29
Speaker 1: and bring them home, so as to make them do
• 9:32
Speaker 1: the laborious part of the work for them. The project
• 9:36
Speaker 1: was not so preposterous if they had gone no further.
• 9:39
Speaker 1: But they did nothing and proposed nothing, but had either
• 9:42
Speaker 1: mischief in the design or mischief in the event. And
• 9:46
Speaker 1: if I may give my opinion, they seemed to be
• 9:48
Speaker 1: under a blast from heaven. For if we will not
• 9:51
Speaker 1: allow a visible curse to pursue visible crimes, how shall
• 9:55
Speaker 1: we reconcile the events of things with the divine justice?
• 9:58
Speaker 1: It was certainly an a pair and vengeance on their
• 10:01
Speaker 1: crime of mutiny and piracy that brought them to the
• 10:03
Speaker 1: state they were in. And they showed not the least
• 10:06
Speaker 1: remorse for the crime, but added new villainies to it,
• 10:09
Speaker 1: such as the peace of monstrous cruelty, of wounding a
• 10:12
Speaker 1: poor slave because he did not, or perhaps could not understand,
• 10:16
Speaker 1: to do what he was directed, and to wound him
• 10:19
Speaker 1: in such a manner as made him a cripple all
• 10:21
Speaker 1: his life, and in a place where no surgeon or
• 10:24
Speaker 1: medicine could be had for his cure. And what was
• 10:27
Speaker 1: still worse the intentional murder for such. To be sure,
• 10:30
Speaker 1: it was as was afterwards the formed design. They all
• 10:34
Speaker 1: laid to murder the Spaniards in cold blood and in
• 10:37
Speaker 1: their sleep. The three fellows came down to the Spaniards
• 10:41
Speaker 1: one morning, and in very humble terms, desired to be
• 10:44
Speaker 1: admitted to speak with them. The Spaniards very readily heard
• 10:48
Speaker 1: what they had to say, which was this that they
• 10:51
Speaker 1: were tired of living in the manner they did, and
• 10:54
Speaker 1: that they were not handy enough to make the necessaries
• 10:56
Speaker 1: they wanted, and that, having no help, they found they
• 11:00
Speaker 1: should be starved. But if the Spaniards would give them
• 11:03
Speaker 1: leave to take one of the canoes which they came
• 11:05
Speaker 1: over in, and give them arms and ammunition proportioned to
• 11:09
Speaker 1: their defense. They would go over to the main and
• 11:12
Speaker 1: seek their fortunes, and so deliver them from the trouble
• 11:15
Speaker 1: of supplying them with any other provisions. The Spaniards were
• 11:20
Speaker 1: glad enough to get rid of them, but very honestly
• 11:23
Speaker 1: represented to them the certain destruction they were running into.
• 11:27
Speaker 1: Told them they had suffered such hardships upon that very
• 11:30
Speaker 1: spot that they could, without any spirit of prophecy, tell
• 11:34
Speaker 1: them they would be starved or murdered, and bade them
• 11:37
Speaker 1: consider of it. The men replied audaciously that they should
• 11:41
Speaker 1: be starved if they stayed here, for they could not
• 11:44
Speaker 1: work and would not work, and they could but be
• 11:47
Speaker 1: starved abroad, and if they were murdered there was an
• 11:50
Speaker 1: end of them. They had no wives or children to
• 11:53
Speaker 1: cry after them, and in short insisted importunately upon their demand,
• 11:58
Speaker 1: declaring they would go, whether they gave them any arms
• 12:02
Speaker 1: or not. The Spaniards told them with great kindness that
• 12:06
Speaker 1: if they were resolved to go, they should not go
• 12:09
Speaker 1: like naked men and be in no condition to defend themselves,
• 12:13
Speaker 1: and that though they could ill spare firearms, not having
• 12:16
Speaker 1: enough for themselves yet, they would let them have two muskets,
• 12:20
Speaker 1: a pistol, and a cutlass, and each man a hatchet,
• 12:23
Speaker 1: which they thought was sufficient for them. In a word,
• 12:26
Speaker 1: they accepted the offer, and, having baked bread enough to
• 12:30
Speaker 1: serve them a month, given them and as much goat's
• 12:32
Speaker 1: flesh as they could eat while it was sweet, With
• 12:35
Speaker 1: a great basket of dried grapes, a pot of fresh water,
• 12:38
Speaker 1: and a young kid alive, they boldly set out in
• 12:41
Speaker 1: the canoe for a voyage over the sea, where it
• 12:44
Speaker 1: was at least forty miles broad. The boat, indeed was
• 12:47
Speaker 1: a large one, and would very well have carried fifteen
• 12:50
Speaker 1: or twenty men, and therefore was rather too big for
• 12:53
Speaker 1: them to manage. But as they had a fair breeze
• 12:56
Speaker 1: and flood tied with them, they did well enough. They
• 13:00
Speaker 1: had made a mast of a long pole, and a
• 13:02
Speaker 1: sale of four large goat skins dried, which they had
• 13:05
Speaker 1: sewed or laced together, and away they went merrily together.
• 13:09
Speaker 1: The Spaniards called after them Bourvoyajo, and no man ever
• 13:13
Speaker 1: thought of seeing them any more. The Spaniards were often
• 13:17
Speaker 1: saying to one another, and to the two honest Englishmen
• 13:20
Speaker 1: who remained behind. How quietly and comfortably they lived. Now
• 13:25
Speaker 1: these three turbulent fellows were gone. As for their coming again,
• 13:29
Speaker 1: that was the remotest thing from their thoughts that could
• 13:32
Speaker 1: be imagined. When behold, after two and twenty days absence,
• 13:36
Speaker 1: one of the Englishmen, being abroad upon his planting work,
• 13:40
Speaker 1: sees three strange men coming towards him at a distance,
• 13:43
Speaker 1: with guns upon their shoulders. Away runs the Englishmen, frightened
• 13:48
Speaker 1: and amazed, as if he was bewitched, to the governor's spaniard,
• 13:52
Speaker 1: and tells him they were all undone, for there were
• 13:55
Speaker 1: strangers upon the island, but he could not tell who
• 13:58
Speaker 1: they were. The spaniard, pausing awhile, says to him, how
• 14:02
Speaker 1: do you mean you cannot tell who they are? The savages?
• 14:04
Speaker 1: To be sure? No, no, says the Englishmen. They are
• 14:08
Speaker 1: men in clothes with arms. Nay, then says the spaniard,
• 14:11
Speaker 1: Why are you so concerned? If they are not savages?
• 14:14
Speaker 1: They must be friends, for there is no Christian nation
• 14:17
Speaker 1: upon earth, but will do us good rather than harm?
• 14:20
Speaker 1: While they were debating, thus came up the three Englishmen, and,
• 14:23
Speaker 1: standing without the wood, which was new planted, hallooed to them.
• 14:28
Speaker 1: They presently knew their voices, and so all the wonders ceased.
• 14:32
Speaker 1: But now the admiration was turned upon another question. What
• 14:35
Speaker 1: could be the matter, and what made them come back again?
• 14:40
Speaker 1: It was not long before they brought the men in, and,
• 14:43
Speaker 1: inquiring where they had been and what they had been doing,
• 14:46
Speaker 1: they gave them a full account of their voyage in
• 14:49
Speaker 1: a few words, that they reached the land in less
• 14:51
Speaker 1: than two days, But finding the people alarmed at their coming,
• 14:55
Speaker 1: and preparing with bows and arrows to fight them, they
• 14:58
Speaker 1: durst not go on shore, but sailed on to the
• 15:01
Speaker 1: northwards six or seven hours till they came to a
• 15:05
Speaker 1: great opening, by which they perceived that the land they
• 15:08
Speaker 1: saw from our island was not the main but an island.
• 15:12
Speaker 1: That upon entering that opening of the sea, they saw
• 15:15
Speaker 1: another island on the right hand north, and several more west, And,
• 15:19
Speaker 1: being resolved to land somewhere, they put over to one
• 15:23
Speaker 1: of the islands which lay west, and went boldly on shore.
• 15:26
Speaker 1: That they found the people very courteous and friendly to them,
• 15:30
Speaker 1: and they gave them several roots and some dried fish,
• 15:33
Speaker 1: and appeared very sociable, and that the women as well
• 15:37
Speaker 1: as the men, were very forward to supply them with
• 15:40
Speaker 1: anything they could get for them to eat, and brought
• 15:42
Speaker 1: it to them a great way on their heads. They
• 15:46
Speaker 1: continued here for four days and inquired as well as
• 15:49
Speaker 1: they could of them by signs, what nations were this
• 15:52
Speaker 1: way and that way, and were told of several fierce
• 15:56
Speaker 1: and terrible people that lived almost every way, who, as
• 15:59
Speaker 1: they made known by signs to them, used to eat men.
• 16:03
Speaker 1: But as for themselves, they said, they never ate men
• 16:06
Speaker 1: or women, except only such as they took in the wars.
• 16:10
Speaker 1: And then they owned they made a great feast and
• 16:12
Speaker 1: ate their prisoners. The Englishmen inquired when they had had
• 16:17
Speaker 1: a feast of that kind, and they told them about
• 16:19
Speaker 1: two moons ago, pointing to the moon and to two fingers,
• 16:23
Speaker 1: and that their great king had two hundred prisoners now
• 16:27
Speaker 1: which he had taken in his war, and they were
• 16:30
Speaker 1: feeding them to make them fat for the next feast.
• 16:33
Speaker 1: The Englishmen seemed mighty desirous of seeing those prisoners, but
• 16:37
Speaker 1: the others, mistaking them, thought they were desirous to have
• 16:40
Speaker 1: some of them to carry away for their own eating.
• 16:42
Speaker 1: So they beckoned to them pointing to the setting of
• 16:45
Speaker 1: the sun and then to the rising, which was to
• 16:48
Speaker 1: signify that the next morning, at sunrising, they would bring
• 16:51
Speaker 1: some for them. And accordingly, the next morning they brought
• 16:54
Speaker 1: down five women and eleven men, and gave them to
• 16:57
Speaker 1: the Englishmen to carry with them on their vovoyage, just
• 17:00
Speaker 1: as we would bring so many cows and oxen down
• 17:03
Speaker 1: to a seaport town to victual a ship. As brutish
• 17:07
Speaker 1: and barbarous as these fellows were at home, their stomachs
• 17:11
Speaker 1: turned at this sight, and they did not know what
• 17:13
Speaker 1: to do. To refuse the prisoners would have been the
• 17:16
Speaker 1: highest affront to the savage gentry that could be offered them,
• 17:20
Speaker 1: and what to do with them they knew not. However,
• 17:23
Speaker 1: after some debate, they resolved to accept of them, and
• 17:27
Speaker 1: in return they gave the savages that brought them one
• 17:30
Speaker 1: of their hatchets, an old key, a knife, and six
• 17:33
Speaker 1: or seven of their bullets, which, though they did not
• 17:36
Speaker 1: understand their use, they seemed particularly pleased with. And then
• 17:40
Speaker 1: tying the poor creature's hands behind them, they dragged the
• 17:43
Speaker 1: prisoners into the boat for our men. The Englishmen were
• 17:47
Speaker 1: obliged to come away as soon as they had them
• 17:50
Speaker 1: or else they that gave them this noble present would
• 17:53
Speaker 1: certainly have expected that they should have gone to work
• 17:55
Speaker 1: with them, have killed two or three of them the
• 17:58
Speaker 1: next morning, and perhaps invited the donors to dinner. But
• 18:02
Speaker 1: having taken their leave with all the respect and thanks
• 18:05
Speaker 1: that could well pass between people, where on either side
• 18:08
Speaker 1: they understood not one word they could say, they put
• 18:11
Speaker 1: off with their boat and came back towards the first island,
• 18:15
Speaker 1: where when they arrived they set eight of their prisoners
• 18:18
Speaker 1: at liberty, there being too many of them for their occasion.
• 18:22
Speaker 1: In their voyage, they endeavored to have some communication with
• 18:25
Speaker 1: their prisoners, but it was impossible to make them understand anything.
• 18:30
Speaker 1: Nothing they could say to them, or give them, or
• 18:32
Speaker 1: do for them, but was looked upon as going to
• 18:35
Speaker 1: murder them. They first of all unbound them, But the
• 18:38
Speaker 1: poor creatures screamed at that, especially the women, as if
• 18:42
Speaker 1: they had just felt the knife at their throats, for
• 18:45
Speaker 1: they immediately concluded they were unbound on purpose to be killed.
• 18:49
Speaker 1: If they gave them a thing to eat, it was
• 18:51
Speaker 1: the same thing. They then concluded it was for fear
• 18:54
Speaker 1: they should sink in flesh, and so not be fat
• 18:57
Speaker 1: enough to kill if they looked at one of them
• 19:00
Speaker 1: more particularly. The party presently concluded it was to see
• 19:04
Speaker 1: whether he or she was fattest and fittest to kill first. Nay,
• 19:08
Speaker 1: after they had brought them quite over and began to
• 19:10
Speaker 1: use them kindly and treat them well, still they expected
• 19:14
Speaker 1: every day to make a dinner or supper for their
• 19:17
Speaker 1: new masters. When the three wanderers had given this unaccountable
• 19:21
Speaker 1: history or journal of their voyage, the Spaniard asked them
• 19:25
Speaker 1: where their new family was, and being told that they
• 19:28
Speaker 1: had brought them on shore and put them into one
• 19:31
Speaker 1: of their huts and were come up to beg some
• 19:33
Speaker 1: victuals for them. They, the Spaniards and the other two Englishmen,
• 19:37
Speaker 1: that is to say, the whole colony, resolved to go
• 19:40
Speaker 1: all down to the place and see them, and did so,
• 19:44
Speaker 1: and Friday's father with them. When they came into the hut,
• 19:48
Speaker 1: there they sat all bound, for when they had brought
• 19:50
Speaker 1: them on shore, they bound their hands that they might
• 19:53
Speaker 1: not take the boat and make their escape. There I
• 19:56
Speaker 1: say they sat all of them stark naked. First, there
• 20:00
Speaker 1: were three comely fellows, well shaped with straight limbs, about
• 20:04
Speaker 1: thirty to thirty five years of age, and five women,
• 20:07
Speaker 1: whereof two might be from thirty to forty, two more
• 20:10
Speaker 1: about four or five and twenty, and the fifth a tall,
• 20:14
Speaker 1: comely maiden about seventeen. The women were well favored, agreeable persons,
• 20:19
Speaker 1: both in shape and features. Only tawny, and two of them,
• 20:23
Speaker 1: had they been perfect white, would have passed for very
• 20:26
Speaker 1: handsome women even in London, having pleasant countenances, and of
• 20:30
Speaker 1: a very modest behavior, especially when they came afterwards to
• 20:34
Speaker 1: be clothed and dressed. Though that dress was very indifferent,
• 20:38
Speaker 1: it must be confessed. The sight, you may be sure,
• 20:42
Speaker 1: was something uncouth to our Spaniards, who were to give
• 20:45
Speaker 1: them a just character. Men of the most calm, sedate
• 20:49
Speaker 1: tempers and perfect good humour that ever I met with,
• 20:52
Speaker 1: and in particular of the utmost modesty. I say the
• 20:56
Speaker 1: site was very uncouth to see three naked men and
• 20:59
Speaker 1: five naked women altogether bound and in the most miserable
• 21:04
Speaker 1: circumstances that human nature could be supposed to be, viz.
• 21:08
Speaker 1: To be expecting every moment to be dragged out and
• 21:10
Speaker 1: have their brains knocked out, and then to be eaten
• 21:13
Speaker 1: up like a calf that is killed for a dainty
• 21:17
Speaker 1: The first thing they did was to cause the old
• 21:19
Speaker 1: Indian Friday's father to go in and see first if
• 21:22
Speaker 1: he knew any of them, and then if he understood
• 21:25
Speaker 1: any of their speech. As soon as the old man
• 21:28
Speaker 1: came in, he looked seriously at them, but knew none
• 21:31
Speaker 1: of them. Neither could any of them understand a word
• 21:34
Speaker 1: he said or a sign he could make, except one
• 21:37
Speaker 1: of the women. However, this was enough to answer the end,
• 21:40
Speaker 1: which was to satisfy them that the men into whose
• 21:43
Speaker 1: hands they were fallen were Christians, that they abhorred eating
• 21:46
Speaker 1: men or women, and that they might be sure they
• 21:49
Speaker 1: would not be killed. As soon as they were assured
• 21:52
Speaker 1: of this, they discovered such a joy, and by such
• 21:55
Speaker 1: awkward gestures several ways as is hard to describe, for
• 21:59
Speaker 1: it seems they were of several nations. The woman who
• 22:02
Speaker 1: was their interpreter was bid in the next place to
• 22:05
Speaker 1: ask them if they were willing to be servants and
• 22:07
Speaker 1: to work for the men who had brought them away
• 22:10
Speaker 1: to save their lives, at which they all fell a dancing,
• 22:13
Speaker 1: and presently one fell to taking up this, and another
• 22:17
Speaker 1: that anything that lay next to carry on their shoulders,
• 22:20
Speaker 1: to intimate they were willing to work. The governor, who
• 22:24
Speaker 1: found that the having women among them would presently be
• 22:27
Speaker 1: attended with some inconvenience and might occasion some strife and
• 22:31
Speaker 1: perhaps blood, asked the three men what they intended to
• 22:34
Speaker 1: do with these women, and how they intended to use them,
• 22:37
Speaker 1: whether as servants or as wives. One of the Englishmen
• 22:41
Speaker 1: answered very boldly and readily that they would use them
• 22:44
Speaker 1: as both, to which the Governor said, I am not
• 22:47
Speaker 1: going to restrain you from it. You are your own
• 22:50
Speaker 1: masters as to that. But this I think is but
• 22:53
Speaker 1: just for avoiding disorders and quarrels among you, and I
• 22:56
Speaker 1: desire it of you for that reason only, viz. That
• 22:59
Speaker 1: you will all engage that if any of you take
• 23:02
Speaker 1: any of these women as a wife, he shall take
• 23:04
Speaker 1: but one, and that having taken one, none else shall
• 23:08
Speaker 1: touch her. For though we cannot marry any one of you,
• 23:11
Speaker 1: yet it is but reasonable that while you stay here,
• 23:14
Speaker 1: the woman any of you takes shall be maintained by
• 23:16
Speaker 1: the man that takes her, and should be his wife,
• 23:19
Speaker 1: I mean, says he while he continues here, and that
• 23:23
Speaker 1: none else shall have anything to do with her. All
• 23:26
Speaker 1: this appeared so just that everyone agreed to it without
• 23:30
Speaker 1: any difficulty. Then the Englishmen asked the Spaniards if they
• 23:34
Speaker 1: designed to take any of them, but every one of
• 23:37
Speaker 1: them answered no. Some of them said they had wives
• 23:40
Speaker 1: in Spain, and the others did not like women that
• 23:42
Speaker 1: were not Christians, and altogether declared that they would not
• 23:46
Speaker 1: touch one of them, which was an instance of such
• 23:49
Speaker 1: virtue as I have not met with in all my travels.
• 23:52
Speaker 1: On the other hand, the five Englishmen took them, every
• 23:55
Speaker 1: one a wife, that is to say, a temporary wife.
• 23:58
Speaker 1: And so they set up a new fom of living
• 24:00
Speaker 1: for the Spaniards, and Friday's father lived in my old habitation,
• 24:04
Speaker 1: which they had enlarged exceedingly within. The three servants which
• 24:08
Speaker 1: were taken in the last battle of the savages lived
• 24:11
Speaker 1: with them, and these carried on the main part of
• 24:13
Speaker 1: the colony, supplied all the rest with food, and assisted
• 24:17
Speaker 1: them in anything as they could, or as they found
• 24:20
Speaker 1: necessity required. But the wonder of the story was how
• 24:24
Speaker 1: five such refractory, ill matched fellows should agree about these women,
• 24:29
Speaker 1: and that some two of them should not choose the
• 24:31
Speaker 1: same woman, especially seeing two or three of them were,
• 24:34
Speaker 1: without comparison, more agreeable than the others. But they took
• 24:38
Speaker 1: a good way enough to prevent quarreling among themselves. For
• 24:42
Speaker 1: they set the five women by themselves in one of
• 24:44
Speaker 1: their huts, and they went all into the other hut,
• 24:47
Speaker 1: and drew lots among them who should choose first. Him
• 24:51
Speaker 1: that drew to choose first, went away by himself to
• 24:54
Speaker 1: the hut where the poor naked creatures were, and fetched
• 24:57
Speaker 1: out her he chose, And it was worth observing that
• 25:00
Speaker 1: he that chose first took her that was reckoned, the
• 25:02
Speaker 1: homeliest and oldest of the five, which made mirth enough
• 25:05
Speaker 1: amongst the rest, and even the Spaniards laughed at it.
• 25:09
Speaker 1: But the fellow considered better than any of them that
• 25:12
Speaker 1: it was application and business that they were to expect
• 25:15
Speaker 1: assistance in, as much as in anything else. And she
• 25:19
Speaker 1: proved the best wife of all the parcel. When the
• 25:22
Speaker 1: poor women saw themselves set in a row thus and
• 25:25
Speaker 1: fetched out one by one, the terrors of their condition
• 25:28
Speaker 1: returned upon them again, and they firmly believed they were
• 25:32
Speaker 1: now going to be devoured. Accordingly, when the English sailor
• 25:36
Speaker 1: came in and fetched out one of them, the rest
• 25:38
Speaker 1: set up a most lamentable cry, and hung about her,
• 25:41
Speaker 1: and took their leave of her with such agonies and
• 25:44
Speaker 1: affection as would have grieved the hardest heart in the world.
• 25:47
Speaker 1: Nor was it possible for the Englishmen to satisfy them
• 25:50
Speaker 1: that they were not to be immediately murdered, till they
• 25:53
Speaker 1: fetched the old man Friday's father, who immediately let them
• 25:57
Speaker 1: know that the five men who were to fetch them
• 25:59
Speaker 1: out one by one had chosen them for their wives.
• 26:03
Speaker 1: When they had done, and the fright the women were
• 26:06
Speaker 1: in was a little over, the men went to work,
• 26:09
Speaker 1: and the Spaniards came and helped them. In a few
• 26:12
Speaker 1: hours they had built them every one a new hut
• 26:14
Speaker 1: or tent for their lodging, apart for those they had
• 26:17
Speaker 1: already were crowded with their tools, household stuff and provisions.
• 26:22
Speaker 1: The three wicked ones had pitched farthest off, and the
• 26:25
Speaker 1: two honest ones nearer, but both on the north shore
• 26:28
Speaker 1: of the island, so that they continued separated as before.
• 26:32
Speaker 1: And thus my island was peopled in three places, and
• 26:35
Speaker 1: as I might say, three towns were begun to be built.
• 26:39
Speaker 1: And here it is very well worth observing that, as
• 26:42
Speaker 1: it often happens in the world, what the wise ends
• 26:46
Speaker 1: in God's providence are in such a disposition of things,
• 26:49
Speaker 1: I cannot say the two honest fellows had the two
• 26:52
Speaker 1: worst wives, and the three reprobates that were scarce worth hanging,
• 26:57
Speaker 1: that were fit for nothing, and neither seemed born to
• 26:59
Speaker 1: do themselves good, nor anyone else, had three clever, careful,
• 27:04
Speaker 1: and ingenious wives. Not that the first two were bad
• 27:07
Speaker 1: wives as to their temper or humor, For all the
• 27:09
Speaker 1: five were most willing, quiet, passive, and subjected creatures, rather
• 27:14
Speaker 1: like slaves than wives. But my meaning is they were
• 27:18
Speaker 1: not alike capable, ingenious, or industrious, or alike cleanly and neat.
• 27:23
Speaker 1: Another observation I must make to the honor of a
• 27:26
Speaker 1: diligent application on one hand, and to the disgrace of
• 27:29
Speaker 1: a slothful, negligent, idle temper on the other, that when
• 27:33
Speaker 1: I came to the place and viewed the several improvements, plantings,
• 27:37
Speaker 1: and management of the several little colonies, the two men
• 27:41
Speaker 1: had so far out gone the three, that there was
• 27:43
Speaker 1: no comparison. They had, indeed, both of them as much
• 27:47
Speaker 1: ground laid out for corn as they wanted. And the
• 27:50
Speaker 1: reason was because, according to my rule, Nature dictated that
• 27:54
Speaker 1: it was to no purpose to sow more corn than
• 27:56
Speaker 1: they wanted. But the difference of the cultivation, of the planting,
• 28:00
Speaker 1: of the fences, and indeed of everything else, was easy
• 28:04
Speaker 1: to be seen at first view. The two men had
• 28:08
Speaker 1: innumerable young trees planted about their huts, so that when
• 28:12
Speaker 1: you came to the place, nothing was to be seen
• 28:15
Speaker 1: but a wood. And though they had twice had their
• 28:17
Speaker 1: plantation demolished, once by their own countrymen, and once by
• 28:21
Speaker 1: the enemy, as shall be shown in its place, yet
• 28:24
Speaker 1: they had restored all again, and everything was thriving and
• 28:28
Speaker 1: flourishing about them. They had grapes planted in order and
• 28:31
Speaker 1: managed like a vineyard, though they had themselves never seen
• 28:35
Speaker 1: anything of that kind, And by their good ordering their vines,
• 28:39
Speaker 1: their grapes were as good again as any of the others.
• 28:42
Speaker 1: They had also found themselves out a retreat in the
• 28:45
Speaker 1: thickest part of the woods, where though there was not
• 28:48
Speaker 1: a natural cave, as I had found, yet they made
• 28:51
Speaker 1: one with incessant labor of their hands, and where when
• 28:54
Speaker 1: the mischief which followed happened, they secured their wives and
• 28:58
Speaker 1: children so as they could never be found, they having
• 29:01
Speaker 1: by sticking innumerable steaks and poles of the wood, which,
• 29:05
Speaker 1: as I said, grew so readily made the grove impassable,
• 29:09
Speaker 1: except in some places when they climbed up to get
• 29:12
Speaker 1: over the outside part, and then went on by ways
• 29:15
Speaker 1: of their own. Leaving as to the three reprobates, as
• 29:19
Speaker 1: I justly call them, though they were much civilized by
• 29:22
Speaker 1: their settlement compared to what they were before, and were
• 29:26
Speaker 1: not so quarrelsome having not the same opportunity. Yet one
• 29:29
Speaker 1: of the certain companions of a profligate mind never left them,
• 29:33
Speaker 1: and that was their idleness. It is true they planted
• 29:37
Speaker 1: corn and made fences, but Solomon's words were never better
• 29:40
Speaker 1: verified than in them. I went by the vineyard of
• 29:43
Speaker 1: the slothful, and it was all overgrown with thorns. For
• 29:47
Speaker 1: when the spaniards came to view their crop, they could
• 29:50
Speaker 1: not see it in some places for weeds. The hedge
• 29:53
Speaker 1: had several gaps in it where the wild goats had
• 29:55
Speaker 1: got in and eaten up the corn. Perhaps here and
• 29:58
Speaker 1: there a dead bush was crammed in to stop them
• 30:01
Speaker 1: out for the present, but it was only shutting the
• 30:04
Speaker 1: stable door after the steed was stolen. Whereas when they
• 30:07
Speaker 1: looked on the colony of the other two, there was
• 30:10
Speaker 1: the very face of industry and success. Upon all they did.
• 30:14
Speaker 1: There was not a weed to be seen in all
• 30:16
Speaker 1: their corn, or a gap in any of their hedges.
• 30:19
Speaker 1: And they, on the other hand, verified Solomon's words in
• 30:22
Speaker 1: another place that the diligent hand maketh rich, for everything
• 30:27
Speaker 1: grew and thrived, and they had plenty within and without.
• 30:30
Speaker 1: They had more tame cattle than the others, more utensils
• 30:33
Speaker 1: and necessaries within doors, and yet more pleasure and diversion too.
• 30:39
Speaker 1: It is true the wives of the three were very
• 30:42
Speaker 1: handy and cleanly within doors, and having learned the English
• 30:45
Speaker 1: ways of dressing and cooking from one of the other Englishmen, who,
• 30:49
Speaker 1: as I said, was a cook's mate on board the ship,
• 30:52
Speaker 1: they dressed their husband's victuals very nicely and well, whereas
• 30:56
Speaker 1: the others could not be brought to understand it. But
• 30:59
Speaker 1: then the hut husband, who as I say, had been
• 31:01
Speaker 1: cook's mate, did it himself. But as for the husbands
• 31:05
Speaker 1: of the three wives, they loitered about, fetched turtles, eggs,
• 31:09
Speaker 1: and caught fish and birds, in a word, anything but labor,
• 31:13
Speaker 1: and they fared accordingly. The diligent lived well and comfortably,
• 31:17
Speaker 1: and the slothful hard and beggarly, and so I believe,
• 31:21
Speaker 1: generally speaking, it is all over the world. But I
• 31:25
Speaker 1: now come to a scene different from all that had
• 31:28
Speaker 1: happened before, either to them or to me. And the
• 31:31
Speaker 1: origin of the story was this. Early one morning there
• 31:35
Speaker 1: came on shore five or six canoes of Indians or savages,
• 31:38
Speaker 1: call them what you please, and there is no room
• 31:41
Speaker 1: to doubt. They came upon the old errand of feeding
• 31:44
Speaker 1: upon their slaves. But that part was now so familiar
• 31:47
Speaker 1: to the Spaniards, and to our men too, that they
• 31:50
Speaker 1: did not concern themselves about it as I did. But
• 31:53
Speaker 1: having been made sensible by their experience, that their only
• 31:57
Speaker 1: business was to lie concealed, and that if they were
• 32:00
Speaker 1: not seen by any of the savages, they would go
• 32:02
Speaker 1: off again quietly when their business was done, having as
• 32:06
Speaker 1: yet not the least notion of there being any inhabitants
• 32:09
Speaker 1: in the island. I say, having been made sensible of this,
• 32:13
Speaker 1: they had nothing to do but to give notice to
• 32:15
Speaker 1: all the three plantations to keep within doors and not
• 32:18
Speaker 1: show themselves, only placing a scout in a proper place
• 32:22
Speaker 1: to give notice when the boats went to sea again.
• 32:26
Speaker 1: This was, without doubt very right, but a disaster spoiled
• 32:30
Speaker 1: all these measures and made it known among the savages
• 32:33
Speaker 1: that there were inhabitants there, which was in the end
• 32:36
Speaker 1: the desolation of almost the whole colony. After the canoes
• 32:40
Speaker 1: with the savages were gone off, the Spaniards peeped abroad again,
• 32:44
Speaker 1: and some of them had the curiosity to go to
• 32:46
Speaker 1: the place where they had been to see what they
• 32:49
Speaker 1: had been doing. Here. To their great surprise, they found
• 32:52
Speaker 1: three savages left behind and lying fast asleep upon the ground.
• 32:57
Speaker 1: It was supposed they had either been so gorged with
• 32:59
Speaker 1: their inhuman feast that like beasts they were falling asleep
• 33:04
Speaker 1: and would not stir when the others went, or they
• 33:06
Speaker 1: had wandered into the woods and did not come back
• 33:09
Speaker 1: in time to be taken in. The Spaniards were greatly
• 33:13
Speaker 1: surprised at this sight, and perfectly at a loss what
• 33:16
Speaker 1: to do. The Spaniard governor, as it happened, was with them,
• 33:20
Speaker 1: and his advice was asked, but he professed he knew
• 33:23
Speaker 1: not what to do. As for slaves, they had enough already,
• 33:27
Speaker 1: and as to killing them, there was none of them
• 33:29
Speaker 1: inclined to do that. The Spaniard governor told me they
• 33:32
Speaker 1: could not think of shedding innocent blood for as to them,
• 33:36
Speaker 1: the poor creatures had done them no wrong, invaded none
• 33:39
Speaker 1: of their property, and they thought they had no just
• 33:42
Speaker 1: quarrel against them to take away their lives. And here
• 33:45
Speaker 1: I must, in justice to these Spaniards observe that let
• 33:49
Speaker 1: the accounts of Spanish cruelty in Mexico and Peru be
• 33:53
Speaker 1: what they will. I never met with seventeen men of
• 33:56
Speaker 1: any nation whatsoever, in any foreign country who were so
• 34:00
Speaker 1: universally modest, temperate, virtuous, so very good humored, and so
• 34:05
Speaker 1: courteous as these Spaniards. And as to cruelty, they had
• 34:09
Speaker 1: nothing of it in their very nature, no inhumanity, no barbarity,
• 34:14
Speaker 1: no outrageous passions. And yet all of them men of
• 34:17
Speaker 1: great courage and spirit. Their temper and calmness had appeared
• 34:21
Speaker 1: in their bearing the unsufferable usage of the three Englishmen,
• 34:25
Speaker 1: and their justice and humanity appeared now in the case
• 34:29
Speaker 1: of the savages above. After some consultation, they resolved upon
• 34:33
Speaker 1: this that they would lie still a while longer, till,
• 34:36
Speaker 1: if possible, these three men might be gone. But then
• 34:40
Speaker 1: the governor recollected that the three savages had no boat,
• 34:44
Speaker 1: and if they were left to rove about the island,
• 34:47
Speaker 1: they would certainly discover that there were inhabitants in it,
• 34:50
Speaker 1: and so they should be undone that way. Upon this
• 34:54
Speaker 1: they went back again, and there lay the fellows fast
• 34:57
Speaker 1: asleep still, and so they resolved to awaken them and
• 35:01
Speaker 1: take them prisoners, and they did so. The poor fellows
• 35:05
Speaker 1: were strangely frightened when they were seized upon and bound,
• 35:08
Speaker 1: and afraid like the women, that they should be murdered
• 35:11
Speaker 1: and eaten, for it seems those people think all the
• 35:14
Speaker 1: world does as they do in eating men's flesh. But
• 35:17
Speaker 1: they were soon made easy as to that, and away
• 35:20
Speaker 1: they carried them. It was very happy for them that
• 35:24
Speaker 1: they did not carry them home to the castle, I mean,
• 35:27
Speaker 1: to my palace under the hill. But they carried them
• 35:30
Speaker 1: first to the bower, which was the chief of their
• 35:32
Speaker 1: country work, such as the keeping the goats, the planting
• 35:36
Speaker 1: the corn et, cetera. And afterward they carried them to
• 35:39
Speaker 1: the habitation of the two englishmen. Here they were set
• 35:42
Speaker 1: to work, though it was not much they had for
• 35:44
Speaker 1: them to do. And whether it was by negligence in
• 35:47
Speaker 1: guarding them, or that they thought the fellows could not
• 35:50
Speaker 1: mend themselves, I know not, But one of them ran
• 35:53
Speaker 1: away and taking to the woods. They could never hear
• 35:56
Speaker 1: of him any more. They had good reason to believe
• 35:59
Speaker 1: he got home again soon after in some other boats
• 36:02
Speaker 1: or canoes of savages, who came on shore three or
• 36:05
Speaker 1: four weeks afterwards, and who, carrying on their revels as usual,
• 36:10
Speaker 1: went off in two days time. This thought terrified them exceedingly,
• 36:14
Speaker 1: for they concluded, and that not without good cause, indeed,
• 36:18
Speaker 1: that if this fellow came home safe among his comrades,
• 36:22
Speaker 1: he would certainly give them an account that there were
• 36:24
Speaker 1: people in the island, and also how few and weak
• 36:28
Speaker 1: they were. For this savage, as observed before, had never
• 36:32
Speaker 1: been told, and it was very happy he had not
• 36:35
Speaker 1: how many there were, or where they lived, nor had
• 36:38
Speaker 1: he ever seen or heard the fire of any of
• 36:40
Speaker 1: their guns, much less had they shown him any of
• 36:43
Speaker 1: their other retired places, such as the cave in the valley,
• 36:47
Speaker 1: or the new retreat which the two Englishmen had made,
• 36:50
Speaker 1: and the like. The first testimony they had that this
• 36:54
Speaker 1: fellow had given intelligence of them was that about two
• 36:58
Speaker 1: months after this, six canoes of savages, with about seven
• 37:02
Speaker 1: eight or ten men in a canoe, came rowing along
• 37:05
Speaker 1: the north side of the island, where they never used
• 37:08
Speaker 1: to come before, and landed about an hour after sunrise
• 37:12
Speaker 1: at a convenient place, about a mile from the habitation
• 37:15
Speaker 1: of the two Englishmen, where this escaped man had been kept.
• 37:19
Speaker 1: As the chief spaniard said, had they been all there,
• 37:22
Speaker 1: the damage would not have been so much, for not
• 37:25
Speaker 1: a man of them would have escaped. But the case
• 37:27
Speaker 1: differed now very much. For two men to fifty was
• 37:31
Speaker 1: too much odds. The two men had the happiness to
• 37:34
Speaker 1: discover them about a league off, so that it was
• 37:37
Speaker 1: above an hour before they landed, and as they landed
• 37:40
Speaker 1: a mile from their huts, it was some time before
• 37:43
Speaker 1: they could come at them. Now having great reason to
• 37:46
Speaker 1: believe that they were betrayed, the first thing they did
• 37:49
Speaker 1: was to bind the two slaves which were left, and
• 37:52
Speaker 1: cause two of the three men whom they brought with
• 37:54
Speaker 1: the women, who it seems proved very faithful to them,
• 37:58
Speaker 1: to lead them with their tes, two wives, and whatever
• 38:01
Speaker 1: they could carry away with them to their retired places
• 38:04
Speaker 1: in the woods which I have spoken of above, and
• 38:08
Speaker 1: there to bind the two fellows hand and foot till
• 38:10
Speaker 1: they heard farther in the next place. Seeing the savages
• 38:14
Speaker 1: were all come on shore, and that they had bent
• 38:17
Speaker 1: their course directly that way. They opened the fences where
• 38:20
Speaker 1: the milch cows were kept, and drove them all out,
• 38:23
Speaker 1: leaving their goats to straggle in the woods. Whither they pleased,
• 38:27
Speaker 1: that the savages might think they were all bred wild.
• 38:30
Speaker 1: But the rogue who came with them was too cunning
• 38:33
Speaker 1: for that, and gave them an account of it all,
• 38:36
Speaker 1: For they went directly to the place when the two
• 38:40
Speaker 1: poor frightened men had secured their wives and goods. They
• 38:44
Speaker 1: sent the other slave they had of the three who
• 38:46
Speaker 1: came with the women, and who was at their place
• 38:49
Speaker 1: by accident, away to the spaniards with all speed, to
• 38:52
Speaker 1: give them the alarm and desire speedy help. And in
• 38:56
Speaker 1: the meantime they took their arms and what ammunition they had,
• 39:00
Speaker 1: and retreated towards the place in the wood where their
• 39:03
Speaker 1: wives were sent, keeping at a distance yet so they
• 39:06
Speaker 1: might see, if possible, which way the savages took. They
• 39:10
Speaker 1: had not gone far, but that from a rising ground
• 39:13
Speaker 1: they could see the little army of their enemies come
• 39:15
Speaker 1: on directly to their habitation, and in a moment more
• 39:19
Speaker 1: could see all their huts and household stuff flaming up
• 39:22
Speaker 1: together to their great grief and mortification, for this was
• 39:26
Speaker 1: a great loss to them, irretrievable. Indeed, for some time
• 39:30
Speaker 1: they kept their station for a while till they found
• 39:33
Speaker 1: the savages, like wild beasts, spread themselves all over the place,
• 39:38
Speaker 1: rummaging every way and every place they could think of,
• 39:41
Speaker 1: in search of prey, and in particular for the people
• 39:45
Speaker 1: of whom now it plainly appeared they had intelligence. The
• 39:49
Speaker 1: two Englishmen, seeing this, thinking themselves not secure where they stood,
• 39:54
Speaker 1: because it was likely some of the wild people might
• 39:56
Speaker 1: come that way, and they might come too many, together,
• 40:00
Speaker 1: thought it proper to make another retreat about half a
• 40:03
Speaker 1: mile farther, believing, as it afterwards happened, that the further
• 40:07
Speaker 1: they strolled, the fewer would be together. Their next halt
• 40:10
Speaker 1: was at the entrance into a very thick grown part
• 40:13
Speaker 1: of the woods, and where an old trunk of a
• 40:15
Speaker 1: tree stood, which was hollow and very large. And in
• 40:19
Speaker 1: this tree they both took their standing, resolving to see
• 40:23
Speaker 1: there what might offer. They had not stood there long
• 40:26
Speaker 1: before two of the savages appeared, running directly that way,
• 40:29
Speaker 1: as if they had already had noticed where they stood,
• 40:32
Speaker 1: and were coming up to attack them, And a little
• 40:35
Speaker 1: way farther, they espied three more coming after them, and
• 40:39
Speaker 1: five more beyond them, all coming the same way. Besides
• 40:43
Speaker 1: which they saw seven or eight more at a distance
• 40:45
Speaker 1: running another way. For in a word, they ran every
• 40:49
Speaker 1: way like sportsmen beating for their game. The poor men
• 40:53
Speaker 1: were now in great perplexity whether they should stand and
• 40:56
Speaker 1: keep their posture or fly. But after a very short
• 40:59
Speaker 1: day bait with themselves, they considered that if the savages
• 41:03
Speaker 1: ranged the country thus before help came, they might perhaps
• 41:07
Speaker 1: find their retreat in the woods, and then all would
• 41:09
Speaker 1: be lost. So they resolved to stand them there, and
• 41:13
Speaker 1: if they were too many to deal with, then they
• 41:15
Speaker 1: would get up to the top of the tree, from
• 41:18
Speaker 1: whence they doubted not to defend themselves fire, excepted as
• 41:22
Speaker 1: long as their ammunition lasted, though all the savages that
• 41:25
Speaker 1: were landed, which were near fifty were to attack them.
• 41:29
Speaker 1: Having resolved upon this, they next considered whether they should
• 41:33
Speaker 1: fire at the first two or wait for the three,
• 41:36
Speaker 1: and so take the middle party, by which the two
• 41:39
Speaker 1: and the five that followed would be separated at length.
• 41:42
Speaker 1: They resolved to let the first two pass by, unless
• 41:45
Speaker 1: they should spy them upon the tree and come to
• 41:48
Speaker 1: attack them. The first two savages confirmed them also in
• 41:51
Speaker 1: this resolution by turning a little from them towards another
• 41:55
Speaker 1: part of the wood. But the three and the five
• 41:58
Speaker 1: after them came forward directly to the tree, as if
• 42:01
Speaker 1: they had known the Englishmen were there. Seeing them come
• 42:04
Speaker 1: so straight towards them, they resolved to take them in
• 42:07
Speaker 1: a line as they came, and as they resolved to fire,
• 42:11
Speaker 1: but one at a time. Perhaps the first shot might
• 42:14
Speaker 1: hit them all three, for which purpose the man who
• 42:16
Speaker 1: was to fire put three or four small bullets into
• 42:19
Speaker 1: his piece, and having a fair loophole, as it were,
• 42:23
Speaker 1: from a broken hole in the tree, he took a
• 42:25
Speaker 1: sure aim without being seen, waiting till they were within
• 42:29
Speaker 1: about thirty yards of the tree, so that he could
• 42:32
Speaker 1: not miss. While they were thus waiting, and the savages
• 42:36
Speaker 1: came on, they plainly saw that one of the three
• 42:39
Speaker 1: was the runaway savage that had escaped from them, and
• 42:42
Speaker 1: they both knew him distinctly, and resolved that if possible,
• 42:46
Speaker 1: he should not escape, though they should both fire. So
• 42:50
Speaker 1: the other stood ready with his piece, that if he
• 42:52
Speaker 1: did not drop at the first shot, he should be
• 42:55
Speaker 1: sure to have a second. But the first was too
• 42:58
Speaker 1: good a marksman to miss his aim, for as the
• 43:00
Speaker 1: savages kept near one another a little behind in a line,
• 43:05
Speaker 1: he fired and hit two of them directly. The foremost
• 43:08
Speaker 1: was killed outright, being shot in the head, The second,
• 43:11
Speaker 1: which was the runaway Indian, was shot through the body
• 43:15
Speaker 1: and fell, but was not quite dead. And the third
• 43:18
Speaker 1: had a little scratch in the shoulder, perhaps by the
• 43:21
Speaker 1: same ball that went through the body of the second, and,
• 43:24
Speaker 1: being dreadfully frightened, though not so much hurt, sat down
• 43:28
Speaker 1: upon the ground, screaming and yelling in a hideous manner.
• 43:32
Speaker 1: The five that were behind, more frightened with the noise
• 43:36
Speaker 1: than sensible of the danger, stood still at first, for
• 43:39
Speaker 1: the woods made the sound a thousand times bigger than
• 43:42
Speaker 1: it really was, the echoes rattling from one side to another,
• 43:46
Speaker 1: and the fowls rising from all parts, screaming, and every
• 43:50
Speaker 1: sort making a different noise according to their kind, just
• 43:54
Speaker 1: as it was when I fired the first gun that
• 43:56
Speaker 1: perhaps was ever shot off in the island. However, all
• 44:00
Speaker 1: being silent again, and they, not knowing what the matter was,
• 44:04
Speaker 1: came on unconcerned till they came to the place where
• 44:08
Speaker 1: their companions lay in a condition miserable enough. Here the
• 44:12
Speaker 1: poor ignorant creatures, not sensible that they were within reach
• 44:15
Speaker 1: of the same mischief, stood altogether over the wounded man, talking, and,
• 44:21
Speaker 1: as may be supposed, inquiring of him how he came
• 44:24
Speaker 1: to be hurt, and who, it is very rational to believe,
• 44:27
Speaker 1: told them that a flash of fire first, and immediately
• 44:31
Speaker 1: after that thunder from their gods had killed those two
• 44:34
Speaker 1: and wounded him. This, I say is rational, for nothing
• 44:38
Speaker 1: is more certain than that, as they saw no man
• 44:41
Speaker 1: near them, so they had never heard a gun in
• 44:44
Speaker 1: all their lives, nor so much as heard of a gun.
• 44:47
Speaker 1: Neither knew they anything of killing and wounding at a
• 44:50
Speaker 1: distance with fire and bullets. If they had, one might
• 44:54
Speaker 1: reasonably believe, they would not have stood so unconcerned to
• 44:57
Speaker 1: view the fate of their fellows without some acad apprehensions
• 45:00
Speaker 1: of their own. Our two men, as they confessed to me,
• 45:05
Speaker 1: were grieved to be obliged to kill so many poor
• 45:08
Speaker 1: creatures who had no notion of their danger. Yet having
• 45:12
Speaker 1: them all thus in their power, and the first, having
• 45:14
Speaker 1: loaded his piece again, resolved to let fly both together
• 45:18
Speaker 1: among them, and singling out by agreement which to aim at,
• 45:22
Speaker 1: they shot together and killed or very much wounded four
• 45:26
Speaker 1: of them. The fifth frightened even to death, though not hurt,
• 45:30
Speaker 1: fell with the rest, so that our men, seeing them
• 45:33
Speaker 1: all fall together, thought they had killed them all. The
• 45:37
Speaker 1: belief that the savages were all killed made our two
• 45:40
Speaker 1: men come boldly out from the tree before they had
• 45:42
Speaker 1: charged their guns, which was a wrong step, and they
• 45:46
Speaker 1: were under some surprise when they came to the place
• 45:49
Speaker 1: and found no less than four of them alive, and
• 45:52
Speaker 1: of them two very little hurt and one not at all.
• 45:55
Speaker 1: This obliged them to fall upon them with the stalks
• 45:58
Speaker 1: of their muskets. And first they made sure of the
• 46:01
Speaker 1: runaway savage that had been the cause of all the mischief,
• 46:05
Speaker 1: and of another that was hurt in the knee, and
• 46:07
Speaker 1: put them out of their pain. Then the man that
• 46:10
Speaker 1: was not hurt at all came and kneeled down to
• 46:12
Speaker 1: them with his two hands held up, and made piteous
• 46:16
Speaker 1: moans to them by gestures and signs for his life,
• 46:19
Speaker 1: but could not say one word to them that they
• 46:22
Speaker 1: could understand. However, they made signs to him to sit
• 46:25
Speaker 1: down at the foot of a tree hard by, and
• 46:28
Speaker 1: one of the englishmen with a piece of rope yarn,
• 46:31
Speaker 1: which he had, by great chance in his pocket, tied
• 46:33
Speaker 1: his two hands behind him, and there they left him,
• 46:37
Speaker 1: and with what speed they could, made after the other two,
• 46:40
Speaker 1: which were gone before, fearing they or any more of them,
• 46:43
Speaker 1: should find way to their covered place in the woods,
• 46:46
Speaker 1: where their wives and the few goods they had left lay,
• 46:50
Speaker 1: They came once in sight of the two men, but
• 46:52
Speaker 1: it was at a great distance. However, they had the
• 46:55
Speaker 1: satisfaction to see them cross over a valley towards the sea,
• 46:59
Speaker 1: quite the contry way from that, which led to their retreat,
• 47:02
Speaker 1: which they were afraid of, And being satisfied with that,
• 47:06
Speaker 1: they went back to the tree where they left their prisoner, who,
• 47:09
Speaker 1: as they supposed, was delivered by his comrades, for he
• 47:13
Speaker 1: was gone, and the two pieces of rope yarn with
• 47:16
Speaker 1: which they had bound him lay just at the foot
• 47:18
Speaker 1: of the tree. They were now in as great concern
• 47:22
Speaker 1: as before, not knowing what course to take, or how
• 47:25
Speaker 1: near the enemy might be, or in what number, So
• 47:29
Speaker 1: they resolved to go away to the place where their
• 47:31
Speaker 1: wives were, to see if all was well there, and
• 47:35
Speaker 1: to make them easy. They were in fright enough, to
• 47:38
Speaker 1: be sure, for though the savages were their own countrymen,
• 47:41
Speaker 1: yet they were most terribly afraid of them, and perhaps
• 47:44
Speaker 1: the more for the knowledge they had of them. When
• 47:47
Speaker 1: they came there, they found the savages had been in
• 47:50
Speaker 1: the wood and very near that place, but had not
• 47:53
Speaker 1: found it, for it was indeed inaccessible from the trees
• 47:57
Speaker 1: standing so thick, unless the persons seek it had been
• 48:00
Speaker 1: directed by those that knew it, which these did not.
• 48:04
Speaker 1: They found therefore everything very safe, only the women in
• 48:08
Speaker 1: a terrible fright. While they were here, they had the
• 48:11
Speaker 1: comfort to have seven of the Spaniards come to their assistance.
• 48:14
Speaker 1: The other ten, with their servants and Friday's father, were
• 48:18
Speaker 1: gone in a body to defend their bower and the
• 48:21
Speaker 1: corn and cattle that were kept there, in case the
• 48:24
Speaker 1: savages should have roved over to that side of the country,
• 48:27
Speaker 1: but they did not spread so far. With the seven
• 48:30
Speaker 1: Spaniards came one of the three savages, who, as I said,
• 48:34
Speaker 1: were their prisoners formerly, And with them also came the
• 48:37
Speaker 1: savage whom the Englishmen had left bound hand and foot
• 48:40
Speaker 1: at the tree. For it seems they came that way,
• 48:44
Speaker 1: saw the slaughter of the seven men, and unbound the eighth,
• 48:47
Speaker 1: and brought him along with them. Where however, they were
• 48:50
Speaker 1: obliged to bind again, as they had the two others
• 48:54
Speaker 1: who were left when the third ran away. The prisoners
• 48:58
Speaker 1: now began to be a burdened to them, and they
• 49:01
Speaker 1: were so afraid of their escaping that they were once
• 49:03
Speaker 1: resolving to kill them, all, believing they were under an
• 49:06
Speaker 1: absolute necessity to do so for their own preservation. However,
• 49:11
Speaker 1: the chief of the Spaniards would not consent to it,
• 49:14
Speaker 1: but ordered for the present that they should be sent
• 49:16
Speaker 1: out of the way to my old cave in the valley,
• 49:19
Speaker 1: and be kept there with two Spaniards to guard them
• 49:22
Speaker 1: and have food for their subsistence. Which was done, and
• 49:25
Speaker 1: they were bound their hand and foot for that night.
• 49:29
Speaker 1: When the Spaniards came, the two Englishmen were so encouraged
• 49:33
Speaker 1: that they could not satisfy themselves to stay any longer there,
• 49:37
Speaker 1: But taking five of the Spaniards and themselves, with four
• 49:40
Speaker 1: muskets and a pistol among them, and two stout quarter
• 49:44
Speaker 1: staves away, they went in quest of the savages. And
• 49:48
Speaker 1: first they came to the tree where the men lay
• 49:50
Speaker 1: that had been killed. But it was easy to see
• 49:53
Speaker 1: that some more of the savages had been there, for
• 49:56
Speaker 1: they had attempted to carry their dead men away, and
• 49:59
Speaker 1: had dragged two of them a good way, but had
• 50:01
Speaker 1: given it over. From thence they advanced to the first
• 50:05
Speaker 1: rising ground, where they had stood and seen their camp destroyed,
• 50:08
Speaker 1: and where they had the mortification still to see some
• 50:11
Speaker 1: of the smoke, But neither could they here see any
• 50:14
Speaker 1: of the savages. Then they resolved, though with all possible caution,
• 50:19
Speaker 1: to go forward towards their ruined plantation. But a little
• 50:23
Speaker 1: before they came thither, coming in sight of the seashore,
• 50:26
Speaker 1: they saw plainly the savages all embarked again in their
• 50:29
Speaker 1: canoes in order to be gone. They seemed sorry at
• 50:33
Speaker 1: first that there was no way to come at them,
• 50:36
Speaker 1: to give them a parting blow, but upon the whole
• 50:39
Speaker 1: they were very well satisfied to be rid of them.
• 50:43
Speaker 1: The poor Englishmen being now twice ruined and all their
• 50:46
Speaker 1: improvements destroyed, the rest all agreed to come and help
• 50:50
Speaker 1: them to rebuild, and assist them with needful supplies. Their
• 50:54
Speaker 1: three countrymen, who were not yet noted for having the
• 50:57
Speaker 1: least inclination to do any good. Yet, as soon as
• 51:00
Speaker 1: they heard of it, for they living remote eastward, knew
• 51:04
Speaker 1: nothing of the matter. Till all was over, came and
• 51:07
Speaker 1: offered their help and assistance, and did very friendly work
• 51:10
Speaker 1: for several days to restore their habitation and make necessaries
• 51:15
Speaker 1: for them, And thus in a little time they were
• 51:17
Speaker 1: set upon their legs again. About two days after this,
• 51:22
Speaker 1: they had the farther satisfaction of seeing three of the
• 51:24
Speaker 1: savages canoes come driving on shore, and at some distance
• 51:29
Speaker 1: from them two drowned men, by which they had reason
• 51:32
Speaker 1: to believe that they had met with a storm at sea,
• 51:35
Speaker 1: which had overset some of them, for it had blown
• 51:37
Speaker 1: very hard the night after they went off. However, as
• 51:41
Speaker 1: some might miscarry, so, on the other hand, enough of
• 51:44
Speaker 1: them escaped to inform the rest as well of what
• 51:48
Speaker 1: they had done, as of what had happened to them,
• 51:50
Speaker 1: and to wet them on another enterprise of the same nature,
• 51:54
Speaker 1: which they, it seems, resolved to attempt with sufficient force
• 51:58
Speaker 1: to carry all before them. For except what the first
• 52:01
Speaker 1: man had told them of inhabitants, they could say little
• 52:05
Speaker 1: of it of their own knowledge, for they never saw
• 52:07
Speaker 1: one man and the fellow being killed that had affirmed it.
• 52:11
Speaker 1: They had no other witness to confirm it to them.
