- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday.
- 0:15It is the 5th of February, which is, would you believe, World
- 0:20Nutella Day. And I don't mind what you think
- 0:23about that delicious nutty chocolatey spread Nutella.
- 0:27The story is actually amazing. after World War Two, there was
- 0:31this international scarcity of cocoa.
- 0:34They just didn't have enough. And so the very ingenious
- 0:38Italian dude by the name of Pietro Ferrero, that's right,
- 0:43he's the guy that started Ferrero, that made us the
- 0:46Ferrero rochet. But anyway, Pietro decided I've
- 0:50got an idea. So he mixed a whole lot of
- 0:52hazelnuts, which they had plentiful supply of in Italy,
- 0:56with a little bit of cocoa, and it made like this Hard Rock loaf
- 1:00and they sliced it like cheese or like chocolate and put it on
- 1:03bread. And that was going really well
- 1:06until about five years later, 1 incredibly hot summer, it melted
- 1:10and Pietro started spreading it onto bread and blow me down.
- 1:14Did people love it or what? And then it was Pietro's son
- 1:18Michelle, who 15 years later perfected the recipe and sent it
- 1:22around the world so that you and I can enjoy some delicious nutty
- 1:27chocolatey spread on our bread product.
- 1:30So there you go, post war scarcity and hot stinking
- 1:34summer's days come together to make something amazing.
- 1:37But all of that aside, we are reading something else that's
- 1:41truly amazing, which is this book written by Jesus disciple
- 1:45John, urging people not only to see Jesus as this incredible
- 1:51universe changing God, but also someone who calls us to a better
- 1:55way of being, a way of love. So let us hear what he has to
- 1:59say as we read together first John chapter 2.
- 2:15My dear children, I'm writing this to you so that you will not
- 2:19sin. But if anyone does sin, we have
- 2:23an advocate who pleads our case before the Father.
- 2:26He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous.
- 2:31He Himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins, and not
- 2:36only our sins, but the sins of all the world.
- 2:39And we can be sure that we know Him if we obey His commandments.
- 2:44If someone claims I know God but doesn't obey God's commandments,
- 2:49that person is a liar and is not living in the truth.
- 2:52But those who obey God's word truly show how completely they
- 2:57love Him. That is how we know we are
- 3:00living in Him. Those who say they live in God
- 3:03should live their lives as Jesus did.
- 3:07Dear friends, I'm not writing a new commandment for you.
- 3:10Rather, it is an old one you have had from the very
- 3:13beginning. This old commandment to love one
- 3:16another is the same message you heard before, yet it is also
- 3:21new. Jesus lived the truth of this
- 3:24commandment, and you also are living it.
- 3:27For the darkness is disappearing and the true light is already
- 3:31shining. If anyone claims I am living in
- 3:35the light but hates a fellow believer, that person is still
- 3:39living in darkness. Anyone who loves a fellow
- 3:42believer is living in the light and does not 'cause others to
- 3:46stumble. But anyone who hates a fellow
- 3:49believer is still living and walking in darkness.
- 3:53Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded
- 3:56by the darkness. I am writing to you who are
- 4:00God's children, because your sins have been forgiven through
- 4:04Jesus. I'm writing to you who are
- 4:06mature in faith because you know Christ who existed from the
- 4:11beginning. I am writing to you who are
- 4:14young in the faith, because you have won your battle with the
- 4:17evil 1. I have written to you who are
- 4:20God's children, because you know the Father.
- 4:24I have written to you who are mature in the faith, because you
- 4:28know Christ who existed from the beginning.
- 4:32I have written to you who are young in the faith because you
- 4:36are strong. God's Word lives in your hearts,
- 4:40and you have won your battle with the evil. 1 Do not love
- 4:46this world or the things it offers you.
- 4:48For when you love the world, you do not have the love of the
- 4:51Father in you. For the world offers only a
- 4:54craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see,
- 4:59and pride in our achievements and possessions.
- 5:02These are not from the Father, but are from this world.
- 5:06And this world is fading away along with everything that
- 5:10people crave. But anyone who does what pleases
- 5:14God will live forever. Dear children, the last hour is
- 5:19here. You have heard that the
- 5:21Antichrist is coming, and already many such antichrists
- 5:24have appeared. From this we know that the last
- 5:28hour has come. These people left our churches,
- 5:31but they never really belonged with us, otherwise they would
- 5:35have stayed with us. When they left, it proved that
- 5:38they did not belong with us. But you are not like that, for
- 5:42the Holy One has given you His Spirit, and all of you know the
- 5:47truth. So I'm writing to you, not
- 5:49because you don't know the truth, but because you know the
- 5:52difference between truth and lies and who is a liar.
- 5:57Anyone who says that Jesus is not the Christ, anyone who
- 6:01denies the Father and the Son is an Antichrist.
- 6:04Anyone who denies the Son doesn't have the Father either,
- 6:09but anyone who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
- 6:14So you must remain faithful to what you have been taught from
- 6:17the beginning. If you do, you will remain in
- 6:20fellowship with the Son and with the Father.
- 6:23And in this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life He promised us.
- 6:29I'm writing these things to warn you about those who want to lead
- 6:31you astray. But you have received the Holy
- 6:35Spirit, and He lives within you, so you don't need anyone to
- 6:39teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you
- 6:43everything you need to know. And what He teaches is true.
- 6:47It is not a lie. So just as he has taught you,
- 6:52remain in fellowship with Christ.
- 6:57And now, dear children, remain in fellowship with Christ, so
- 7:01that when He returns, he will be full of courage and not shrink
- 7:05back from him in shame. Since we know that Christ is
- 7:09righteous, we also know that all who do what is right are God's
- 7:14children. Oh Jesus, you make it so simple
- 7:26for us to know where the truth lies.
- 7:28How do we find the truth in the midst of this world that is so
- 7:32confusing? Ah, this this chapter talks
- 7:35about the lies around us. And there are so many that would
- 7:39seek to deceive and to persuade us of their argument.
- 7:44But our search for truth, Jesus doesn't need to find that that
- 7:47secret argument or that that codex of information know.
- 7:53Our search for truth just needs to find you, Jesus, you are
- 7:58truth. And when we know you, we know
- 8:02the truth. And when people deny you, that
- 8:05is equivalent to a lie, because to deny you is to deny the
- 8:09truth. Oh Jesus, please rise up in our
- 8:15minds. Rise up in our hearts.
- 8:18Holy Spirit, continually flood us with the knowledge and the
- 8:24assurity and the awareness of Jesus so that we can just be
- 8:30surrounded by truth. And that truth doesn't only set
- 8:35us free, but sets the whole world free.
- 8:39Oh, what a wonderful God you are, a God who embodies the
- 8:44truth. So we praise you, our God of
- 8:47truth, and pray that your truth would be ours.
- 8:51And pray this in your wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
