- 0:25coaching show A little bit back on NC State. Jim, I thought,
- 0:30you know, the game of football is momentum, and like any sport,
- 0:33I feel you scored first, and then NC State answered and you referenced it
- 0:40in the first segment of the show. The quick score that they were able
- 0:43to come up with, I thought, you know, took away some of
- 0:46your momentum, and they did that again by scoring late and a half with
- 0:49that three point field goal. How much did you think that impacted the overall
- 0:53game? Well? Big, I mean, you know, if you if
- 0:57sans or butts and you know, would have could have should But you know
- 1:00in football, if you go down and you score first, you know statistics
- 1:07say you have a better chance of winning the game, but it's only if
- 1:10you can get off the field on defense. We couldn't get off the field.
- 1:12That would have been a huge momentum boost for us had we been able
- 1:15to get that done. We weren't able to get it done into the first
- 1:19half. You know, anytime you in the first half by taking a lead
- 1:23with the last play, touchdown or kick, you know, it takes you
- 1:26into the locker room with a different mindset than if you're the team that gave
- 1:30up the kick or the touchdown. There's just a different energy that's produced.
- 1:34And so that was big for them, you know. But I think the
- 1:40key things for us were, you know, the two PI penalties when we
- 1:44had them backed up, you know, George kicks at fifty eight yard or
- 1:47down to the nine yard line. They threw the flag on Mumu, which
- 1:49you know, you can argue either way that it was a good call or
- 1:53bad call. In my opinion, Movemo played it very very well, but
- 1:56they threw the flag, you know, and that's going to happen and you
- 1:59gotta reach on. And then the fourth down stop in the end zone where
- 2:04they threw the flag, you know, that was a big one. And
- 2:06then you know the kickoff after after Victor's run. You know, Victor,
- 2:14Victor knows better than to do what he did, but we got to cover
- 2:17better. We gave up a forty yard return on a kick that we kicked
- 2:20off from our own twenty and then on top of that, we had,
- 2:24you know, we had an immature or emotional mistake that led to a fifteen
- 2:32yard penalty. Now they take over on the twenty seven. So to me,
- 2:35that was kind of the series there of events that really affected this game
- 2:39the most, Coach, the plays run by both teams NC State at fifty
- 2:46six. You count thirty six in that game and for the most part last
- 2:49season. And I'm gonna look back too much, but your ground game kept
- 2:53the ball in your hands quite a bit. And some of these games that
- 2:55you won, the upsets you pulled at home, and you know, getting
- 2:59the six wins. It's how important are how many plays do you run and
- 3:02how often or how long you have a football in a football game. I
- 3:07know turnovers changed things and a lot of things changed the results, but that
- 3:10one stuck out to me. They ran twenty more plays than you can do
- 3:15well you're saying they had how many plays and we had how many? They
- 3:17had fifty six? Who had thirty six? According to what I'm reading here,
- 3:21Yeah, that's not accurate, but they really doesn't. Well that doesn't
- 3:24matter, Mike, that that's not accurate. What is accurate is there there
- 3:29is this disparity between how many they had and how many we had. There
- 3:32was you know, whether it was thirty six to fifty six or seventy six
- 3:36to fifty six, it was what you're seeing is exactly correct. It matters
- 3:42if you end drives with points. You know, I think time of possession
- 3:47can sometimes be a really good indicator, but I think sometimes could be a
- 3:51misleading indicator. I think it depends on how you end those drives. You
- 3:53know, I think on Saturday night it was an accurate indicator for sure.
- 3:59You know, they were able to stay on the field on third down,
- 4:01the sustained drives or not even get the third down, just go first second,
- 4:05first second or first first, and we weren't and uh and so on
- 4:13Thursday night that was certainly an indicator. And you know, that's one of
- 4:18the areas of the game that you want to control if you can, is
- 4:23time of possession. But if you're you know, scoring on a seventy one
- 4:26yard run, you know, and you're doing that over and over again,
- 4:29and then that's gonna scw it a little bit. So it's all circumstance based
- 4:34the quarterback. This is the last time I'm gonna mention this guy's name.
- 4:39He's drold me nuts Brendan Armstrong. He's that over nine thousand yards of his
- 4:43career. He's twelfth in FBS history. As I'm watching the game, I'm
- 4:46saying to myself, these are not designed runs by him. It looked like
- 4:50he'd pulled the ball down, go back, looking to pass and feel what
- 4:55was going on defensively and turn it into something offensively running the football. Is
- 5:00that particularly what he was trying to do or what ends the state was thinking
- 5:03about, because it looked like they were certainly effective doing it in the game.
- 5:09Yeah, those weren't designed runs. Those were those were him Armstrong.
- 5:13Uh, he's kind of a one read and run guy. You know.
- 5:15For my first reason not there, I'm gonna take off and go and I'm
- 5:19gonna give him a lot of credit because he deserves a lot of credit.
- 5:23You know, he made us miss in the open field. We had guys
- 5:26assigned to him, and he made us miss. He found he found the
- 5:32cracks in the pass rush. He has really good lateral quickness and he's tougher
- 5:40in hell. Uh. You know you mentioned his passing yards. You know,
- 5:44he didn't really throw the ball that much. I mean not he did
- 5:47throw well, he didn't have to throw it out much. But you know,
- 5:50I had a lot of respect from him coming into the game and more
- 5:53respect for him coming out of the game. Dolphin Yano got his first start
- 5:58as the Hukon quarterback. Jim More of the Ukon football coach, I'll Mike
- 6:01Chrispino. You know, Joe ran the ball pretty well, I thought,
- 6:05I mean, I didn't expect that. But overall, as you review what
- 6:10you saw in the game, what what did you see from him and what
- 6:14kinds of things do you hope he will improve on as the week's open here,
- 6:18as the season goes on. I was pleased with Joe and the way
- 6:24Joe played, and I thought he was poised. I thought he made good
- 6:27decisions. You know, there's a couple of plays he'd like to have back.
- 6:31I just expect him to continue to get comfortable with our offense and comfortable
- 6:35with them in that he's throwing the football too, you know. But I
- 6:38think what you see in terms of his poise and then his ability to run
- 6:43the football. You know, we we knew he could run. And he's
- 6:49tough. You know, he's a tough kid. When he runs the ball,
- 6:51you know, he's not afraid to stuff it up in there and take
- 6:56a hit. So I was very impressed with Joe and I just I'm excited
- 7:00watching him continue to get better. Yeah, it's interesting. Before the game,
- 7:02I go down on the field to watch warmups and he didn't have his
- 7:05pads on yet. He's a big dude. He's bigger you think, you
- 7:10know when you look at him from where we sit up in a broadcast booth,
- 7:13but standing on the sideline, he's got good size for a QB.
- 7:16He's sixty three two hundred twenty five two hundred twenty six pounds, you know,
- 7:20so he's not a little guy. He can see over things, you
- 7:26know, he can bring it when he wants to run, he can he
- 7:29can shed off you know, pass rush guys. You know what. I
- 7:33when one of the things that was impressive to me was under pressure, his
- 7:38ability to keep his eyes up and still look down field and keep a play
- 7:41alive, and whether he was keeping it alive by you know, running getting
- 7:46a position to throw the ball, or running and using his legs get you
- 7:48know, get yards. I thought that was impressive. All right, coach,
- 7:54We're gonna talk about Georgia State next. They played Uri last week.
- 7:57They were nine hundred and forty four yards a total office seventy seven points,
- 8:01So this could be an interesting game coming up on Saturday night. Jim Morra
- 8:05with us. You're listening to the Yukon Football Coaches Show on Learfield
