- 1:30well, today's episode of Johnny Dollar is actually the second of the series that
- 1:38have lost episodes in them, so bear with us. Part one is available,
- 1:44but part two is missing, So we'll listen to part one and then
- 1:49I'll come back and briefly communicate what we're going to hear what we would have
- 1:53heard in part two, and then we'll play part three. So here now
- 1:57is the Salt City Matter, Part one from Hollywood. It's time now for
- 2:06Johnny Dollar. Hello, Johnny, Sam Robin Oh, I don't know.
- 2:10It's a feeling I get every time I hear your voice in the phone.
- 2:14Sam, Now what does that mean? Well, the last time you called,
- 2:16I took a job and had to honk my watch for cable fair in
- 2:19Hong Kong. That's what it means. So I bought your new watch,
- 2:22didn't I what's in your mind? Ed Julian, Ed Julian, so long,
- 2:25Sam, I don't know. Wait, wait minute, Johnny, Jhnny,
- 2:28this is important. I need help. If you're fooling around with somebody
- 2:30like Ed Julian, you sure do need help. Go call a cop.
- 2:32They can't help me. I'm calling you, Johnny, for all time's sake.
- 2:38I'll see you after breakfast, Sam, tonight and every weekday night.
- 2:47Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account,
- 2:52America's Fabulous Prelance Insurance Investigator, Yours truly, Johnny Dollar Expense account submitted
- 3:09by special investigator Johnny Dollar to Samuel Rubin and Associate's insurance broker's Majestic Building,
- 3:15Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of
- 3:21the Salt City matter. I didn't know it was going to be that Salt
- 3:28city. I mean, but I didn't know the name Ed Julian. Every
- 3:30policeman in the country knew that name. My first impulse was to hang up
- 3:36the phone on Sam, but I didn't. Instead, I spent eighty five
- 3:39cents. That's my first item on camp fare to get me to Sam's office.
- 3:44Welcome Johnny, long time no see. Come on in, sit down,
- 3:46have a smoke. Sam Rubin looked about the same as I remembered him,
- 3:50and he acted about the same. He shook my hand, pushed a
- 3:53cigar at me, held up one hundred and sixty dollars letter, and smiled,
- 3:57Oh, Johnny, Johnny, I'd like to have you on my permit
- 4:00payroll. Now, that'd be something. Are you making me an offer?
- 4:02Just talking? No, I suppose I'm just talking. But you're good to
- 4:04look at, you know. It gives me confidence, A little outfit like
- 4:08I got here I can't afford high price talent like yourself, or a steady
- 4:12diet. Why don't you sit down, kid. You'll pardon me, Sam,
- 4:15but I don't feel sorry for you. You're right about every kind of
- 4:17insurance has ever been issued. Oh well, yeah, it's sure, but
- 4:19nothing like those big operations that you're used to. This is all little bit
- 4:23of companies. Eh So I make a living a man having his own company
- 4:28running it by himself, none of his own companies. So it's ten times
- 4:30as much trouble though. Listen, what do you know about Ed Julian Johnny?
- 4:34He had quite a name in Chicago and Los Angeles, Hoboken. I
- 4:39thought he was in jail these days? Oh, Ed No, got himself
- 4:43out of jail. Must have been three four years ago. Sure, went
- 4:45in two enterprises in Florida, California. Very legitimate, fellow. Oh,
- 4:50I'm sure he is. Let's get to the point, Sam. But you're
- 4:53working for me, aren't you. I don't know whether I am or not.
- 4:55I haven't heard what it's all about about. It's about Ed Julian,
- 4:58that's what it's about. I lay it right out for you. Here.
- 5:00Look at this fifty thousand dollars, fifty thousand dollars. I gotta pay his
- 5:06widow if something happens to him. You'll point me again, Sam, But
- 5:10when you collected that first premium on him, and I take it you sold
- 5:12him fifty thousand dollars worth of life insurance, you should have thought of this
- 5:15part of it. What if something happened to him. No, nothing's happened
- 5:18to him. I'm afraid something's gonna happen to him. I'd have to get
- 5:21this money up. I'm just gonna listen to you talk because it doesn't seem
- 5:26to do much good asking you a question. So go ahead, Sam,
- 5:28talk, talk, Maybe something will come up. All right, But Johnny,
- 5:30don't be shrewd with me. Huh. Now, the policy was issued
- 5:32maybe a month ago. I personally, I personally, I wouldn't tell a
- 5:36man like ed Jordian life insurance any kind of insurance. He's not a calculated
- 5:40risk. He's allowsy, longsighted bet man like that. The enemies he makes.
- 5:46Oh, he's a bad fellow all the way around. But here it
- 5:49is, it's on paper. I'm stuck. If anything happens to him.
- 5:54Now, Johnny, the man's living in San Francisco now, And all I
- 5:59want is you go to and ask him to cancel a policy. Okay,
- 6:01Sam, how did you ever get the insurance? But no, no,
- 6:04Johnny, please, why didn't you go to San Francisco? Handle? Did
- 6:06you? So? I'll tell you why because you know, and I know,
- 6:11there's no way from me or you or anybody else to approach at Julian
- 6:14and ask him to cancel out this policy. What it a monster? Is
- 6:17that you want me to go there and keep an eye on him until you
- 6:19can break the policy. Isn't that it not necessarily Johnny? What do you
- 6:26mean? Not necessarily? All right? All right, so you're right.
- 6:29Listen. I heard through the grape fund there's a large collection of Ed's old
- 6:31friends visiting in and around San Francisco just a few days ago. It makes
- 6:35me very nervous. I have already a blood pressure to brand on us who
- 6:39might want to shoot him down? Yeah, that's the kind of people.
- 6:42Yes, fifty thousand dollars payoff would hit me very hard this week? All
- 6:46right, next week maybe not so hot. But this week, ooh boy,
- 6:49the mark? Are you playing with company funds? No? No,
- 6:51it's the calculated risk. I'm entitled to take with company funds they entrust.
- 6:55All right, all right, now, will you please sit down and study
- 6:58this thing out with me? What I'm always asking you to sit down?
- 7:00You never do. I also never study anything with you. Sam. How
- 7:05much EARL expenses five hundred dollars bonus by Sam? No, no, wait,
- 7:11wait, wait, Johnny is so impatient. I'll make it a thousand,
- 7:15thousand dollars bonus. Take care of yourself, say Johnny. Look,
- 7:18look, Johnny, all you have to do is keep them alive till I
- 7:21break the policy responsibility. My lawyers can do that. They told me to
- 7:25take a couple of days. I don't have to do anything, Sam,
- 7:28how'd you get that policy? It was in a bundle of stuff came in
- 7:30from the coast. Ed Julian took this out under his real name, Eduardosarcavetti.
- 7:35No, who knows it's Ed Julia. Skip the gestures and tell me
- 7:39how you do know? Well, my broker out in San Francisco, her
- 7:42name is I don't know, Strauba Street or something like that. She sold
- 7:46it to him. Later on she found out who he really was. She
- 7:47sent me a wire, So a thousand's okay? Huh now so how much
- 7:57no calcifying That watch you gave me never kept all right, all right,
- 8:00all right. Twenty five twenty five hundred expense account Item two one hundred and
- 8:11sixty eight dollars and seventy three cents Air Fair and Intinental's Hartford to San Francisco.
- 8:15I arrived at eight in the morning. On the way in from the
- 8:18airport, the fog began to roll in from the Bay. From my hotel
- 8:22room at the Fairmount, I looked out in time to see the provision bars
- 8:26moving out toward Alcatraz before the fog closed in completely. Somebody said the storm
- 8:31warnings were up all along the coast, and somebody was right. By eleven
- 8:33o'clock a light rain had begun to patter over the fog Mound Bay City.
- 8:37I had him three twenty three bucks, one trench coat. I was worrying
- 8:41it when I spent another buck. I had him for Kevvera, this time
- 8:45to get me from San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel to add Julian's address on another part
- 8:48of San Francisco's Knob Hill. There, in the drizzling rain, I interviewed
- 8:52not ed Julian, but one of San Francisco's older but more stable residents.
- 8:58The uniform said he was a member of the Robberty Police. Hey you,
- 9:01I just know there's a minute nobody lives there, and I hope your sake,
- 9:07boy, you ain't no Jimmy Artist, because I got me a gun
- 9:09under this ring, coach. I'm no Jimmy Artist. I'm just trying to
- 9:11locate a man named Julian Ed Julian. That's right, let's Sarcovetti lived here.
- 9:16Well, according to my records, mister Sharkavetty and mister Julian are the
- 9:20same man. Well, he ain't here now. Mood out bagging baggage a
- 9:24week ten days ago, whatever name he used. Uh, huh, don't
- 9:26suppose you have any idea where he went to you Nope, you're happen to
- 9:31see him move yep, and his wife and their clothes left, all their
- 9:35furniture, huh, didn't have any to leave. This place was furnished for
- 9:39him. They're the kind of people who never owned more than they carry.
- 9:43That's the way I have figured him. Fast traveling and short acquaintances. Now,
- 9:46I once to a fellow up in King City. You see, Kings
- 9:50City's about forty five miles north. Here. That's how the Ed Julian matter
- 9:54stood on a rainy morning in San Francisco. Nothing out of the ordinary for
- 9:58Red Julian, yet all around me there seemed to be some sort of a
- 10:03dark, threatening undertone that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Whatever it
- 10:07was, it troubled me standing on in the rain talking to that old man.
- 10:11It still troubled me when I made my way back down the hill and
- 10:13found to my surprise that the San Francisco Classified telephone directory listed Edward Julian Enterprises
- 10:20expense account. I am five ten cents one phone call. Hello, Hello,
- 10:26I'd like to talk to mister Julian. Please, he's not in secretaries
- 10:31out would you like to leave a message? Well, this is Johnny Dollar
- 10:35calling. He doesn't know me for him, why do you expect him back?
- 10:39Never? The rain was just starting up again as I stood in front
- 10:50of the floor level office at Paul and Hooker. On the door it said
- 10:54Edward Julian Enterprises Incorporated. Below it had said walk in. I did at
- 11:00all? Who's that? Oh? Oh, who you're looking for Ed Julian.
- 11:05He isn't around now. Maybe I can help you. Oh, maybe
- 11:09you can. I'd like to know something about his enterprises. Why? Why
- 11:13might want to invest some money? Oh? What's funny about that? You
- 11:16were the guy who called me a little while ago. Yeah, I called.
- 11:20I suppose you're the one I talked to. What's your angle? I
- 11:22want to find Julian so die so do a lot of people. What's her
- 11:26name? Shahnny Dollar. I'm Ray Gumby, Edge attorney. Come on in
- 11:31here, warmer. I followed Ray Gumby to the back office of the two
- 11:37office suite, watched him as he stood in front of the gas heater.
- 11:41Medium sized man fifty or so, wearing a tan sport coda wolf scarf for
- 11:45turtleneck sweater, not exactly the conservative attire usually expected of members of the bar,
- 11:50But then he looked happy about it. Yeah, shit down, Dollar,
- 11:56Have a drink, thanks, mister Gumby. Yeah, cheers. Now
- 12:07you ask about Edge enterprises, Well, I'll tell you right now. They
- 12:11aren't much. He has an oil field, a piece of a gambling casina,
- 12:16piece of a racetrack, and a part of a ship, and part
- 12:20of a smelter works. What does he do? A couple of weeks ago
- 12:22he up and unloads it all. I've had a little pool with all this
- 12:28weather we've been having. Why do you want to find him to protect him?
- 12:35That's cute. Personally, I wish the bum would get pneumonia. He
- 12:39left me holding the sack here. How's that? I've won these corporations for
- 12:43him and acted as chairman on all the boards, and he sold out from
- 12:46under me. Didn't he bother to say goodbye or pay me off? You
- 12:50want to find him to then you bet you. I'm sewing for proper fees.
- 12:56Think it'll do any good, mister Gumpy, I don't think so,
- 12:58I mean as far as getting my money goes. But if I can get
- 13:01him subpoena and he ignores the subpoenae, the courtal issue are worn on contempt
- 13:05charges and throw his carcass in jail for a while. If he was behind
- 13:09the bars and I want to visit him, maybe I could handle him the
- 13:13bars between us, of course, of course you want another knocker? No
- 13:16thanks? That sounds pretty good. It is getting him in jail. Yeah,
- 13:24if I can get him served, It's not gonna be an easy job
- 13:30getting those papers into his hands. Two of my regular boys have already tried
- 13:33and failed. I'm a fool ever to accept such a man as a client.
- 13:37Never do such a thing again. All off, it makes you feel
- 13:39any better, mister Grumby. The man I'm working for said practically those same
- 13:43words to me in Hartford yesterday. It doesn't make me feel any better.
- 13:46I wish it did, and I wish you luck protecting him. Hey,
- 13:52mister Gumby, something just occurred to me. Now, what's that? Well?
- 13:58No, maybe we could work this out together. You want Julian to
- 14:01be served with a subpoene so you can have the police pick him up.
- 14:05I want him to be safe, and there's no safer spot in the city
- 14:09jail. Hey, where's that subpoenie right here? And there's a fee in
- 14:13it if you can get it in his hands two hundred Maybe? All right?
- 14:18You say, two of you men have already tried and failed to get
- 14:20to him. What happened to them? Been to his place on Knob Hill?
- 14:24I was there earlier today. He moved out, I know, but
- 14:28my men went up there to serve him. Both of them fell down two
- 14:31flights of stairs. Seems like a miss. Maybe it isn't living in such
- 14:35high places these days. I hope not for your shake. Dollar. Now
- 14:56here's our star to tell you about tomorrow's in triggering up of this week's story.
- 15:01Tomorrow, that's when I begin to find a myth can be stranger than
- 15:03fiction. Join us, won't you? Yours Truly Johnny Dollar? Yours Truly
- 15:26Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood, written by John
- 15:30Dawson. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Be sure to join
- 15:35us tomorrow night at same time in station for the next exciting episode of Yours
- 15:39Truly Johnny Dollar, Roy Rowan speaking welcome back Well. According to John Abbott,
- 16:29who checked the script because the audio is not available, what happened is
- 16:33in part two is that Johnny went to Inspector Walsh of San Francisco Police,
- 16:41discussed the case and found out that Julian had left town. Then he met
- 16:47with Eleanor Stover, who was the insurance agent who sold Julian the policy,
- 16:56and she talks about how she met him at a restaurant and he and she
- 17:03sold him the policy there, even though he tried to make a pass at
- 17:08her in the restaurant and while he had his wife along with him in the
- 17:15restaurant. Uh and uh she. She and Johnny have dinner and Eleanor talks
- 17:22about Jim Reno, Chili Winters, Lolovich and Pachachi uh from Detroit and Turkey
- 17:30Johnson all gangsters and uh she says that it's a really bad situation for Lorraine.
- 17:40And Johnny gets a tip from Wade that Julian is somewhere called the Skyline
- 17:45Apartments. So Johnny goes over to the apartments and runs into Swifty, who
- 17:55is a known hoodlum, and he uh uh he asked about Julian, and
- 18:04Luke and Swifty come up and they beat Johnny up and put him in a
- 18:11cab and send him to a Turkish bath. And that's how episode two ends.
- 18:18And here now is episode three, Assault City Matter from Hollywood. It's
- 18:25time now for Johnny Dollar. Yes, the Skyline apartment, Johnny Dollar speaking
- 18:34what Maybe you don't remember, may, but I remember you. I was
- 18:37there last night and got banged on the head by a pair of hoodlums.
- 18:41I know nothing about it and I can't talk now. Well, then you
- 18:42can listen. I'm coming over there in about an hour. I hope you
- 18:45have two hoods are there When I show up when you tell them that.
- 18:48For me, I'll deliver the message if you show that. And every Weekday
- 19:00Night Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Pact.
- 19:04Expense account of America's Fabulous freelance insurance Investigator, Yours, truly Shohnny Dollar expense
- 19:23account submitted by special Investigator Johnny Dollar two, Sam Ruben and Associates, Insurance
- 19:29Broker's Majestic Building, Hardfred, Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expendit
- 19:33yours during my investigation of the Salt City matter. Expense account Item eight ten
- 19:41dollars medical bill for two stitches in my scalp, Item nine ten cents.
- 19:47One more phone call to the prettiest insurance broker in San Francisco. You said
- 19:52you'd buy me lunch. Something's come up. I don't care what you say.
- 19:55You said you'd meet me, meet me. I had them ten two
- 20:00dollars more of that ever loving cab fair This time I kept a cabby waiting
- 20:04outside Eleanor Stover's apartment. Johnny, Johnny, Hi, Angel, I didn't
- 20:12want to be a witch, but I did want to see you, if
- 20:15only for a minute, Come in can't. My CAB's waiting downstairs. What
- 20:21happened? Do you? I argue a little bit with two of Ed Julian's
- 20:23hired hands. He has a little muscle around him these days. No one
- 20:26to worry, Oh Johnny, I feel responsible? Why? Like a big
- 20:30dope. I was the one who sold in that insurance policy. Now you
- 20:33have to mix into it and try to keep him alive. You look like
- 20:37the one who needs to protection you. Well, don't look at it that
- 20:38way. If you hadn't sold in the policy, I'd never have come to
- 20:41San Francisco and I never have met you, and you wouldn't be here right
- 20:45now. I'll call you Lendy Ellie. Yes, John, I didn't tell
- 20:49you this part. I'm going to service a penie on him and try to
- 20:52get into appear in court. I don't expect you're pay any attention to it.
- 20:56And then they less you a warrant for his arrest for contempt of court.
- 21:00I figured he'd be as safe in jail as anywhere else. An attorney
- 21:03who worked on a few deals with him, a man named Ray Gumby,
- 21:07Oh take care. I went back to my cab and told the driver to
- 21:15take me to the Skyline apartments, and we pulled up in front. The
- 21:19same kind of things were going on in the same lobby. Hello moish,
- 21:25Oh, mister swift, let me swifty Swifty. You're in here looking for
- 21:32trouble and you're going to get it. I thought you found that out once.
- 21:33I sure did, and I sure am. Where's your tall, skinny
- 21:38friend he's coming? Hello, Well, have been in the row? Boy
- 21:48from a hartbur How many times we have to tell you out of here?
- 21:51You've hit your quota. I only get tossed out of one place at one
- 21:53time. What floor is Julian on the foot? But that don't get out
- 21:56of my way, not so fast. I messed you up all over the
- 22:00door. This is a knife, this is a gun. That way,
- 22:04Yeah, that thing away, boy. I got two stitches in my scalp
- 22:07from you boys last night. I'll always have a little scar from them,
- 22:11and somehow I think you should have the same. Under the circumstances, it
- 22:19seemed like the honest thing to do. I left both of them in the
- 22:22lobby and took the elevator and escorted up to the fourth floor. But I
- 22:26was disappointed once more. Ed Julian didn't answer the door, But a small
- 22:30blonde girl who looked like she might have been having a good cry, did
- 22:36Swifty? What do you want? You're not Swift? Is that Julian here?
- 22:42Swift? He didn't let you come up here. You won't let anybody
- 22:45up here. How'd you get inside? Why don't you invite me in?
- 22:49And I'll tell you all about it? Are you please? All right?
- 22:56Why not come on in? Whoever you are, mister, you're taking some
- 23:03awful chances. Well, let's say I'm a friend of Ed's. Ed hasn't
- 23:07got any friends, and I know all of them. What's your name,
- 23:11Johnny Dollar? Where do I find him? I'm Ed's wife. My name's
- 23:17Lorraine. I know you. I mean I know a friend of yours.
- 23:19All on a strawberry? She said, she went to high school with you
- 23:22about ten years ago, a million years ago, at least a million.
- 23:30How did you know her? I'm in the insurance business. Do you expect
- 23:33that back soon? I don't expect anything anymore. No, what do you
- 23:40want to see him about? Business? I'd like to wait for him.
- 23:45You got this far, you might as well? What about Swifty and Luke?
- 23:51Downstairs? They were glad to see me come up drink or something.
- 24:00You ought to take off your hat and cold. It be cold for you
- 24:06when you did they do that? Yes, it wasn't too easy getting in
- 24:15those dirty punks. Can I can I fix it or something? Doctor just
- 24:22tucked two stitches in it. It'll be okay. I'm sorry. You seem
- 24:29like a nice guy. Well, you seem like a nice girl. What
- 24:36I said, you seem like a nice girl. Nobody said anything like that
- 24:42to me since I married it. You aren't supposed to be nice when I
- 24:47love somebody like Ed Julian. Well, my job is to protect him from
- 24:51who or what. I don't know, but to protect him. I want
- 24:55to find him. You won't protect him here. He hasn't been here for
- 24:57a couple of days or he How should I know? Worry is, how
- 25:00should I know? I'm only his wife, the hired girl. Those others
- 25:08came in town, one of us, those from the East ugly man with
- 25:15yesterday, no, I guess it was the day before Ed was here with
- 25:22one of them, a man named Chili Winters. They sat right there drink
- 25:26and talk, then they both went out together. I didn't like the way
- 25:33that Chili looked where they go, I don't know. I'll get out of
- 25:40here. Johnny, you're't gonna find him here, ever, go on beat
- 25:44it. He'll kill me if you found me talking to anybody. Kildy.
- 25:47I didn't want that to happen, so I left. No one was in
- 25:56the lobby to say hello, fire up, bullet or use a black jack.
- 26:00I spent another hour downtown at the Hall of Justice looking up the record
- 26:03of Chilling Winters, a list of felonies ranging from armed robbery to assault with
- 26:07a deadly weapon. He'd been convicted twice on the latter charge, once in
- 26:11Michigan and once in California. It seemed likely that tracing him might prove helpful
- 26:15and locating at Julian, but he was not to be located either. About
- 26:22three o'clock in the afternoon, after a fruitless day of trying to locate Winters
- 26:25or Julian or Bullets, I went back to my hotel room. Oh,
- 26:29mister Dollar, mister Dollar, Now, what do you remember me, the
- 26:33desk clerk at the Skyline. Yeah, I remember you. I must apologize
- 26:37for what happened. I mean, all the trouble you had with mister Swift
- 26:41and mister Luke. They didn't handle the matter very well. No, they
- 26:45didn't. What's on your mind? Well, I'll be very blunt. Two
- 26:48things were on my mind, ed Julian and your problem in locating him.
- 26:52I'm just a desk clerk. I need every penny, you know. I
- 26:56hope you're sling it away. I took an awful chance here. You'll ask
- 27:00for mister Julian twice yesterday you found him neither time. Come on, get
- 27:04to it, Widdy. Well, I know you are a thug like those
- 27:07others. I mean, I didn't know until missus Julian told me you were
- 27:10an insurance man. Well, anyway, I know where mister Julian can be
- 27:15found where, and I'd hoped you'd be able to uh here. This is
- 27:22all I'm able to now, Worriesy, thank you, mister Dollah. Now,
- 27:26I just happened to over here this morning when I was working the switchboard.
- 27:29Mister Julian, Well, he's in Salt City, California, the Salt
- 27:33City Smelter Company, I believe, one of his enterprises. It seems he
- 27:37went there with the mister Winters because there's going to be a kind of a
- 27:40big meeting of all of them there, mister Reno and others sometime this week.
- 27:45Does that make sense to you, mister Dolla, it might, Yeah,
- 27:49all right, you've got your money. Oh yes, thank you,
- 27:52mister Dolla. Oh and please please don't mention to anyone that I was here,
- 27:56that I disclosed this to you. I'd lose my job if it got
- 27:59out. And a local filling station furnished a map of California, which located
- 28:07a place called Salt City about three hundred miles away in the desert. I
- 28:11decided to ask a man who might know about it, Ray Gumby, attorney,
- 28:14a law Oh what I've handled correspondents from there, not on the beaten
- 28:21pass. Well, that doesn't tell me much as near as I can gather.
- 28:22It's an enterprise town, lock stock and barrel. Did Julian's going over
- 28:29there? We'll do't forget all this, at least my part of it.
- 28:32Why I don't want you to go that far and trying to get him back
- 28:34here. Salt City's real bad news. Yes, sounds like a mister Gumby,
- 28:41Let me ask you something. Why are you going this far on this
- 28:45case? Sounds like a loser to me. I don't know mister Gummy.
- 28:48I don't know, but I've had the feeling ever since that Junion's name was
- 28:52first mentioned, that that something was happening, something way off somewhere, but
- 28:59so close I could touch it. That's funny, I've had the same fury
- 29:07Expencer count autem eleven thirty eight dollars transportation by train, San Francisco to Salt
- 29:12City in Return. It was just coming up dawn when the conductor nudged me
- 29:17out of a restless sleep and told me the Salt City stop was sixty seconds
- 29:19long. I took my bag and stepped off onto the dry, sunbaked clay
- 29:23that served as a station platform. Then I looked around and saw a yellow,
- 29:30grimy little town stuck along one side of a yellow, grimy little mountain,
- 29:34the stacks from an immense smell rising up to the skyline, the smell
- 29:37of phosphorus and coca in the air. It had been a bad trip to
- 29:41what was obviously a bad place, and naturally enough, bad things began to
- 29:47happen right away. Day. Yeah, sure, what Salt City smell of
- 29:52works? Know where they are? Oh yeah, I know where they are,
- 29:55but I ain't taking you there. What to get your head off of
- 29:59my cap. Hey, look, I hain't off the door called the cop.
- 30:03You better do like you say? Pah, oh sure smile. You
- 30:10ever been here before? No, it's the end of line. I've been
- 30:15here twice. Both times I promised myself I'll never come back again. And
- 30:21what are you doing here now? Accident? They kicked me off there free.
- 30:25I get nightmares about this police. I remember the first cop I ever
- 30:30met here in Sault City. While I was spelling my name to him,
- 30:33he hit me in the face several times. Ohs by mistake, of course,
- 30:38But don't risk any mistakes. Friends. I'm not going to be here
- 30:41long. That's good. That's good, that's real good. You know what
- 30:47what? Somebody made this dump and and forgot about it, just plain forgot
- 30:52about it. I see it. No birds sing, no dog barked,
- 31:07no cock crowed, nothing, nothing but that feeling inside of me and something
- 31:15saying it's going to happen here. It's going to happen here. Now here's
- 31:38our star to tell you about tomorrow's intriguing episode of this week's story. Tomorrow.
- 31:42Well, maybe I was psychic or something, because tomorrow is when that
- 31:47feeling that haunch turns into action. Join us, won't you Yours Truly?
- 31:52Johnny Dollar? Yours Truly Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in
- 31:59Hollywood. Written by John Dawson. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone.
- 32:02Be sure to join us tomorrow night at the same time in station for
- 32:06the next exciting episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Roy Rowlan speaking welcome back.
- 32:27Well, we definitely miss some things not having part two here, but
- 32:31we'll talk about the episode first. Really on the positive side, you know,
- 32:37these last two weeks of serials have not been amongst some of my favorites,
- 32:44but it was just it was just this episode I thought was pretty good.
- 32:52I particularly like the description part where they really just establish this scene in
- 33:00Salt City in a way I thought was just fascinating. One thing that we
- 33:06did miss not actually hearing the episode is we don't have any idea of the
- 33:12severity of the beating that Johnny took. I happen to know that this is
- 33:17one of those cases of script reuse, and it's actually an episode we played
- 33:23on the program way way back when, and I know that when there is
- 33:29physical violence dispensed on this particular program. The violence was pretty intense, so
- 33:35Johnny probably had a cause to be upset and so quite a bit ahead.
- 33:45And I love just the mood in the sense of this. This is just
- 33:49perfect, wonderful for Johnny Doller. I just wish we had part four to
- 33:54actually pay for play for you. All right, Well, now we're off
- 34:00to listener comments and feedback, and we have this from Kelly who comments,
- 34:10love the show. Always a huge Johnny Dollar fan. But she says,
- 34:15you were so right with the Jolly Roger fraud story. Instead of being involved
- 34:22in the show, your mind is saying this is so weak and obvious.
- 34:27But and definitely hears like that the show has ups and downs. I think
- 34:30this is definitely feeling like an up so far. We'll find out on Friday
- 34:36how good it is. But Jolly Roger was was definitely down. And she
- 34:46says, I'm not sure which is my favorite Johnny Dollar story, and that
- 34:52is one. I think. It's tough if you look at the whole series,
- 34:57all the episodes we have, they're around seven hundred and sixteen different episodes
- 35:02we have, of course haven't played all of them, but that's a lot
- 35:06to pick from. And by the time you've reached the ends, you've forgotten
- 35:12some of them, probably the ones that really stand out in your mind for
- 35:16good reasons. It might be something to consider as candidates. My favorite pre
- 35:22Bob Bailey one continues to be the Yankee Pride Matter, and probably my favorite
- 35:30one so far of the serial episodes we've done is the Valentine Manner. I
- 35:37thought that was a pretty strong episode, followed by the McCormick matter. But
- 35:42I'd love to hear from listeners, but your favorites might be. And then
- 35:45we have a listener comment from Itune review from al from Ann Arbor. I
- 35:52love listening to the shows, Adam's commentary and the old time ads, except
- 35:58for the balloon animals. I have a feeling we're going to be hearing about
- 36:01the balloon animal thing for time to come. All right, Well, that
- 36:06will do it for today, and we will be back tomorrow with the amazing
- 36:14Mister Malone. And then join us here on Friday when we'll bring you part
- 36:20four in Part five of the Salt City Matter. In the meantime, send
