Speaker 2: How you day, I'm doing fine?
• 2:01
Speaker 5: Thank you super you look pretty good today, Well thank you.
• 2:03
Speaker 2: You don't look so bad yourself, Well.
• 2:05
Speaker 5: Thank you very much. All right, there we got that
• 2:08
  Speaker 5: part of.
• 2:09
  Speaker 1: You doing.
• 2:12
Speaker 2: And the show went off the rails from that point. Yes,
• 2:14
Speaker 2: So how are things?
• 2:16
  Speaker 5: They're they're just wonderful.
• 2:17
Speaker 2: You're you excited about spring because it's it's coming?
• 2:20
Speaker 5: Yes, And I have no faith in groundhogs. Okay, first
• 2:25
Speaker 5: of all, they're not even meteorologists. Okay, they're rodents. And
• 2:29
Speaker 5: the reason that they give whatever is because whoever is
• 2:32
Speaker 5: handling them messed with them and made them get up
• 2:36
Speaker 5: earlier than they wanted to, so they figured they'll give
• 2:38
  Speaker 5: a bad report.
• 2:39
Speaker 2: Groundhog's success rates are not very good. I mean, especially
• 2:43
Speaker 2: the big one like Punkstani Phil, they're not very good.
• 2:47
Speaker 2: We have our own meteorologists, and you.
• 2:49
Speaker 5: Know, it's an excuse to have a big breakfast afterwards.
• 2:52
  Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
• 2:52
Speaker 5: That's all it is. And those breakfasts. I have a
• 2:55
Speaker 5: few things to say about it.
• 2:57
Speaker 2: I bet you do. So what's new? What's new with you?
• 3:02
  Speaker 1: Well?
• 3:03
Speaker 5: I want to talk about the new passion, which is
• 3:07
Speaker 5: not even brand new. I've been doing Mediterranean now for
• 3:10
Speaker 5: over eight years, and of course I have a history
• 3:13
Speaker 5: with weight Watchers for forty seven years and so being
• 3:17
Speaker 5: able to give people the tools to help themselves is
• 3:21
Speaker 5: really one of the driving forces in my heart, in
• 3:24
Speaker 5: my head, what I want people to realize is number one,
• 3:28
Speaker 5: Mediterranean is not a diet.
• 3:30
  Speaker 2: Not a diet.
• 3:31
Speaker 5: It is absolutely everything but a diet. And eating healthy
• 3:37
Speaker 5: is like giving your body the medicine of staying alive
• 3:42
Speaker 5: in a healthy way because we eat fresh, clean, unadulterated
• 3:47
Speaker 5: food that doesn't have bad stuff in it. By bad stuff,
• 3:51
Speaker 5: I'm talking about chemicals and preservatives, and if you were
• 3:54
Speaker 5: to travel to that part of the world, the food
• 3:57
Speaker 5: is so remarkably delicious because it doesn't have all of
• 4:01
Speaker 5: those additives. And people are amazed at how good they
• 4:06
Speaker 5: feel when they go to Italy, they go to Greece wherever,
• 4:10
Speaker 5: and that is such a large region in that part
• 4:13
Speaker 5: of the world, and we want to do that here
• 4:16
Speaker 5: for a larger number of people. Most folks are running
• 4:21
Speaker 5: their own personal lost and found department. And what that
• 4:24
Speaker 5: means is they lose weight and darn it, then they
• 4:26
Speaker 5: find it, and when they find it, they generally find
• 4:30
Speaker 5: more than they lost.
• 4:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the way it works.
• 4:32
Speaker 5: Yeah, And then they have to find excuses to explain
• 4:35
Speaker 5: why they gain back more than they lost, and that
• 4:38
Speaker 5: gets very very old and very boring.
• 4:41
Speaker 2: And any physician will tell you that the constant yo
• 4:43
Speaker 2: yoing back and forth. You know, you lose thirty, gain forty,
• 4:49
Speaker 2: lose forty, gain fifty, that's just as bad if I mean,
• 4:54
Speaker 2: you don't want to wish morbid obesity on anyone, but
• 4:58
Speaker 2: any doctor will tell you that you pretty much better.
• 5:01
Speaker 2: It's harder in your body, the constant change.
• 5:03
Speaker 5: It absolutely absolutely because that yo yo effect. And it's
• 5:07
Speaker 5: not just a five or ten pound yo yo. It's actually,
• 5:10
Speaker 5: as you explain it, it can be thirty, forty, fifty,
• 5:13
Speaker 5: one hundred pounds. And you often hear where people lose
• 5:17
Speaker 5: ninety and then you're talking to them, well, I gain
• 5:21
Speaker 5: back one hundred and twenty five or I gain back
• 5:23
Speaker 5: one hundred and fifty. And nothing in this world is
• 5:27
Speaker 5: more painful than that experience to lose weight inappropriately and
• 5:32
Speaker 5: gain it back, and then where do you go from there?
• 5:35
Speaker 5: So when I say that fresh, clean, healthy food is
• 5:40
Speaker 5: your medicine, people need to hear that and how that
• 5:43
Speaker 5: applies to them. Because on Mediterranean number one, there's nothing
• 5:49
Speaker 5: restricted except we want you to eat clean food. We
• 5:52
Speaker 5: want you to stop in the supermarket and make sure
• 5:54
Speaker 5: that you read the bag of the label. Sometimes the
• 5:57
Speaker 5: preservatives that are included in food are such a cobulated word.
• 6:02
Speaker 5: I'm maybe not even saying that you want because that
• 6:06
Speaker 5: your mouth can't even pronounce it.
• 6:08
Speaker 2: If you can't pronounce it, don't put it in your body.
• 6:10
Speaker 2: I mean. And all you've got to do is look
• 6:12
Speaker 2: at the back of any of these labels and look,
• 6:14
Speaker 2: I'm not sitting up on my high horse. I don't
• 6:17
Speaker 2: always do what I'm supposed to do, but one of
• 6:21
Speaker 2: the things I try to do is I literally I
• 6:24
Speaker 2: try to look at a label and say, if I
• 6:27
Speaker 2: can't pronounce it, I'm not going to eat it, and
• 6:30
Speaker 2: I'm certainly not going to eat it every day.
• 6:33
Speaker 5: And if you did it once in a while, okay.
• 6:35
Speaker 2: Fine, right, that's moderation.
• 6:37
Speaker 5: My point is that people think that they're not going
• 6:41
Speaker 5: to come to Mediterranean because it's a diet, and it's
• 6:44
Speaker 5: not a diet. And I'm seeing such great success among
• 6:47
Speaker 5: the people that are coming to my morning group, and
• 6:50
  Speaker 5: I don't teach the evening class. There's a former weight
• 6:53
Speaker 5: watcher leader by the name of Carmela Crawford, who is
• 6:57
Speaker 5: teaching Mediterranean in the evening, and we're over at the
• 7:00
Speaker 5: American Job Center on Leon Sullivan Way, And as I
• 7:04
Speaker 5: shared with everyone earlier this year, we change locations and
• 7:08
Speaker 5: it's a great place, plenty of good parking, and we
• 7:12
Speaker 5: want people to come to experience for themselves. It's very affordable.
• 7:16
Speaker 5: But more importantly, I want them to understand the benefits,
• 7:20
Speaker 5: the long term health benefits. I mean, we're now hearing
• 7:25
Speaker 5: that people with dementia and Alzheimer's are beginning to find
• 7:30
Speaker 5: ways to clear that fog up with honey and certain
• 7:35
Speaker 5: other ingredients added. And that's groundbreaking, but that's natural. That's
• 7:41
Speaker 5: a way to do it naturally without using some of
• 7:45
Speaker 5: these drugs that are making it worse. And we look
• 7:48
Speaker 5: at drugs as the panacea. You know, there are so
• 7:52
Speaker 5: many people who are taking the weight loss drugs. But
• 7:55
Speaker 5: what happens when that stops? What did you learn? What
• 7:58
Speaker 5: did you change? What did you experience that you can
• 8:00
Speaker 5: actually say, Okay, now I know what to do. No,
• 8:04
Speaker 5: you don't. And that's why eating healthily has such a
• 8:09
Speaker 5: powerful impact. And we want people to understand that, not
• 8:13
Speaker 5: about dieting. And then somebody's going to chastise you because
• 8:17
Speaker 5: this week you gained the pound. You know what you did.
• 8:20
Speaker 5: Everybody knows what they do. And when you got a mystery.
• 8:24
Speaker 2: When you teach your classes and you kind of reference
• 8:27
Speaker 2: that there, you know there were I know that with
• 8:29
Speaker 2: the Weight Watchers program, of which you were a part
• 8:31
Speaker 2: of for many many years. We're not here to trash
• 8:33
Speaker 2: them or anything like that, but no, no, exactly, but
• 8:36
Speaker 2: you know there was always like the way in and
• 8:38
Speaker 2: so on, and so how do you do you don't
• 8:41
Speaker 2: do that with these classes.
• 8:42
Speaker 5: We have a way in, but we have a way
• 8:44
Speaker 5: in only for one reason, as a personal barometer, so
• 8:48
Speaker 5: that you can see what you are doing. It's not
• 8:51
Speaker 5: a judgment call, right right, But in the old days,
• 8:55
Speaker 5: and I will only speak with love about Weight Watchers
• 8:59
Speaker 5: Beak because number one, first and foremost, they helped me
• 9:03
Speaker 5: change my life and they showed me a pathway that
• 9:06
Speaker 5: I never knew existed. And I did it with food.
• 9:09
Speaker 5: I didn't do it with medicine. I used to take
• 9:12
Speaker 5: medicine for years. I went to every barriater doctor in
• 9:16
Speaker 5: the state of Maryland before I moved to West Virginia,
• 9:20
Speaker 5: and every bariatric approach that I used. Yeah, I lost
• 9:25
Speaker 5: weight when I was taking the drug. When I didn't
• 9:28
Speaker 5: go back to that method, I gained it back because
• 9:32
  Speaker 5: I didn't learn anything. I didn't know how to eat.
• 9:35
Speaker 5: And that statement many people who have weight to lose
• 9:39
Speaker 5: say to me, do I look like I don't know
• 9:41
Speaker 5: how to eat? Yes, you do know how to eat,
• 9:44
Speaker 5: but you don't know how to eat correctly. And that's
• 9:47
Speaker 5: that link that we want to offer two people to
• 9:51
Speaker 5: show them what they don't know. Everybody thinks they know,
• 9:54
Speaker 5: but they don't know.
• 9:55
Speaker 2: This is a very good point. We have a texture here.
• 9:58
Speaker 2: Listening to the show, text says, have you ever considered
• 10:01
Speaker 2: merely taking groups through the grocery stores and help teach
• 10:05
Speaker 2: how to read labels and to pick effective foods? Maybe
• 10:07
Speaker 2: once or twice a month.
• 10:09
Speaker 5: I actually have thought about that. I haven't put it
• 10:12
Speaker 5: into action, but I will say thank you because it
• 10:15
Speaker 5: is a wonderful idea. Yeah, and instead of meeting, we
• 10:20
Speaker 5: could meet at Kroger's or all these or wherever one
• 10:23
Speaker 5: would like to go, or we can do it at Walmart.
• 10:25
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 10:26
  Speaker 5: I mean it's a great idea.
• 10:28
Speaker 2: And don't be fooled by something that says low fat
• 10:31
Speaker 2: or fat free that could be your biggest enemy sometimes,
• 10:34
Speaker 2: or things or that has the word diet.
• 10:36
Speaker 5: And the thing on the label that people need.
• 10:40
Speaker 2: To turning your microphone off. You keep turning your microphone off,
• 10:46
Speaker 2: and you've got a little button under the microphone and
• 10:48
Speaker 2: you keep hitting it and turning your microphone.
• 10:50
Speaker 5: Oh, we won't make that mistake again.
• 10:52
  Speaker 2: Go ahead.
• 10:53
Speaker 5: The most important thing when we read labels is not
• 10:56
Speaker 5: even looking at the fat content. We need to look
• 10:58
Speaker 5: at the sugar content ten And if it has more
• 11:02
Speaker 5: than five grams of sugar, leave it on the shelf
• 11:04
Speaker 5: for somebody else to buy. Don't put it in your cart.
• 11:08
Speaker 5: Sugar by the way, and a lot of people don't
• 11:11
Speaker 5: know this, but cancer feeds on sugar. I'm learning, and yes,
• 11:18
Speaker 5: and I'm I mean that you're learning the hard way.
• 11:21
Speaker 5: But of course your prognosis is encouraging. And I want
• 11:25
Speaker 5: I pray for your success certainly, and I think that
• 11:28
Speaker 5: other people have told you that, oh, you're gonna be successful.
• 11:32
Speaker 2: I'm going to be success, But.
• 11:33
Speaker 5: People don't know this. People don't know this. And personally,
• 11:38
Speaker 5: when I see people who have morbid obesity as part
• 11:42
Speaker 5: of their life, I want to say something.
• 11:45
  Speaker 2: I don't you're doing it again. I am ware that's
• 11:49
Speaker 2: right in front of you.
• 11:50
Speaker 5: Okay, I'm going to keep my heart up here.
• 11:52
Speaker 2: If there's a little little square right in front of you,
• 11:55
Speaker 2: oh it says on yes, and you keep hitting.
• 11:57
Speaker 5: It, oh well, okay, then.
• 11:59
Speaker 2: Gup your elbow. Okay, away from that.
• 12:01
Speaker 5: Now everybody knows that technical stuff is in my strong suit.
• 12:06
Speaker 2: Well at least you're pretty thank you. There's that. All right,
• 12:08
Speaker 2: go ahead, get in and I have another text for you.
• 12:10
  Speaker 1: But go ahead.
• 12:11
Speaker 5: So people, don't you know, people just have so much
• 12:14
Speaker 5: to learn. And I worry about all these drugs that
• 12:18
Speaker 5: are out there for weight loss. You have to change
• 12:20
Speaker 5: your mind about your body and drugs doing that for you.
• 12:24
Speaker 5: There's something missing there and I worry about them.
• 12:28
Speaker 2: My wife and I were talking about this the other day.
• 12:30
Speaker 2: We were on the We don't watch a lot of
• 12:32
Speaker 2: TV during the week, but sometimes we'll catch up on
• 12:34
Speaker 2: the weekend and I usually have it on some sort
• 12:35
Speaker 2: of a news show or whatever. Sure, and just simply
• 12:40
Speaker 2: the amount of television commercials that there are. It's one
• 12:45
Speaker 2: after another for this pill, not all related to diet,
• 12:48
Speaker 2: but I mean for this pill and for that pill.
• 12:51
Speaker 2: The commercials are ninety seconds long or two minutes, and
• 12:55
Speaker 2: if they're ninety seconds, fifty seconds of that is telling
• 12:58
Speaker 2: you the side effects A and and again it could
• 13:01
Speaker 2: be for any number of things merely not necessarily related
• 13:04
Speaker 2: to diet. Could be any number of things. And I'm
• 13:06
  Speaker 2: a big believer, and I don't really know a whole
• 13:09
Speaker 2: lot in this world, but I'm a big believer in
• 13:11
Speaker 2: not a single thing is going to be helped by
• 13:14
Speaker 2: putting more medicine. Now I'm not I understand people have
• 13:18
Speaker 2: to take medications, but but I mean, I'm simply not
• 13:23
Speaker 2: going to be that guy. I'm fifty five now, I'm
• 13:26
Speaker 2: not going to be that guy at sixty five who
• 13:27
Speaker 2: starts out every day by taking fifteen pills. Not happening.
• 13:31
Speaker 5: And I respect, but and some people simply think that
• 13:36
Speaker 5: drugs are the answer, and if anything, they're the stumbling block.
• 13:41
Speaker 2: Yeah, and that stumbling block is huge. And one pill
• 13:44
Speaker 2: begets another pill. And so we're going to give you
• 13:47
Speaker 2: this pill because this is wrong with you. And then
• 13:49
Speaker 2: we're going to give you this pill because that'll counteract
• 13:51
Speaker 2: this pill. And you know you're spending all your time
• 13:54
  Speaker 2: at your give.
• 13:56
Speaker 5: The doctor if they just read all the side effects
• 13:58
Speaker 5: on the television screen and that's not the way to
• 14:01
  Speaker 5: live your life.
• 14:02
Speaker 2: But Dave Allen showing five eighty line brought to you
• 14:04
Speaker 2: in a part by your hometown baseball team, The Charles
• 14:06
Speaker 2: the Dirty Birds. It's winter time now, but we're already
• 14:08
Speaker 2: thinking about baseball at Gomart ballpark'd be a great time
• 14:11
Speaker 2: to go ahead and get your season tickets your Dirty
• 14:13
Speaker 2: Birds merchant more visit dirtybirdsbaseball dot com. We got a
• 14:15
Speaker 2: text here for you since I got a pretty serious
• 14:18
Speaker 2: health issue and had to get on the Mediterranean way
• 14:20
Speaker 2: of eating. Never felt better in my life, even with
• 14:23
Speaker 2: the serious health issue. Stop eating all the sugary, salty,
• 14:27
Speaker 2: fried crap people. By the way, Millie's one of my
• 14:30
  Speaker 2: favorite people in.
• 14:31
Speaker 5: Thank you very much. And by the way, crap is
• 14:34
Speaker 5: one of my favorite words. But now that I heard
• 14:36
Speaker 5: it come out of somebody else's mouth, I can say
• 14:38
Speaker 5: it because that's exactly what is in the foods that
• 14:41
Speaker 5: we are buying, and it's dangerous and it's keeping people sick.
• 14:46
Speaker 5: Congratulations to that person. I also hope their health issues
• 14:50
Speaker 5: get better and better. But the fact that this person
• 14:54
Speaker 5: is saying eating Mediterranean is they feel better than they
• 14:58
Speaker 5: felt in a long time. Kudos to you, and kudos
• 15:01
Speaker 5: to the Mediterranean. By the way, I listened to a
• 15:04
Speaker 5: broadcast the main doctor for the Woman's Heart Center in
• 15:09
Speaker 5: Los Angeles at Cedar Sinai Hospital. She was doing a
• 15:13
Speaker 5: telecast and she said, Mediterranean is the way to go.
• 15:17
Speaker 5: And that's a pretty large institution and they have a
• 15:21
Speaker 5: wide reach to hundreds of thousands of people, maybe millions
• 15:25
Speaker 5: of people. Mediterranean is the way to go. I'm not

Speaker 2: Had a text after Millie left, but she was still
• 18:40
Speaker 2: hanging out of the studio here. Stop me if you
• 18:42
Speaker 2: don't believe this. Millie likes to talk a little bit,
• 18:45
Speaker 2: so I'm trying to, you know, get her in, get
• 18:47
Speaker 2: the next, get her out, get the next guest. But
• 18:49
Speaker 2: they wanted to know about restaurants that serve Mediterranean menus
• 18:53
Speaker 2: and the texture says, I work seventeen hour days and
• 18:56
Speaker 2: two jobs. It sounds like you're perfect for radio. Text
• 18:59
Speaker 2: her out. He just could just come on in. Uh,
• 19:01
Speaker 2: but I just off the top of my head here
• 19:03
Speaker 2: in the area uh olive tree, Uh in in South Charleston,
• 19:09
Speaker 2: Mediterranean breeze Uh Aladdin she mentioned Aladdin.
• 19:15
  Speaker 5: Uh.
• 19:15
Speaker 2: And Okay, all right, go on, chump, jump on in here.
• 19:18
Speaker 10: Best of crete over on the west Side is one
• 19:20
Speaker 10: of my place's favorite places to get a euro.
• 19:22
  Speaker 2: Okay, that's right.
• 19:22
  Speaker 4: Sure.
• 19:23
Speaker 2: Well, and every restaurant, I mean, save McDonald's and Wendy's
• 19:28
Speaker 2: and then you know, are going to have something on
• 19:30
Speaker 2: the menu that I had dinner uh with a with
• 19:33
Speaker 2: a good friend of mine last week at Sohos and
• 19:37
Speaker 2: uh he ordered the salmon. And I don't know what
• 19:41
  Speaker 2: I've ever sent to. I mean, I don't know if
• 19:42
Speaker 2: I've ever seen a better piece of salmon in my
• 19:44
Speaker 2: life than what they have at Soho's over there my
• 19:46
Speaker 2: go to as always. And I don't know whether this
• 19:48
Speaker 2: is Millie Snyder prune or not. I I love the
• 19:51
Speaker 2: caesar salad. Probably not gonna be Melly approve because of
• 19:55
Speaker 2: the of the dressing, but I get put the black
• 19:58
Speaker 2: pepper shrimp on it and uh, and it's it's one
• 20:00
Speaker 2: of my favorite things there. So yeah, to answer, I mean,
• 20:02
Speaker 2: just off the top of our heads, Mediterranean Breeze, olive Tree, Aladdin.
• 20:07
Speaker 2: You said, creepy on the West Side, and then every
• 20:12
Speaker 2: place is going to have something on the menu. Even
• 20:15
Speaker 2: if you go to an Applebee's or you go somewhere
• 20:18
Speaker 2: like that, they're going to have something that's a little
• 20:19
Speaker 2: bit more healthier. Dave, don't forget uh creepy Pizza Corridor.
• 20:27
Speaker 11: G Oh yeah, cre pizza pizza.
• 20:30
Speaker 2: Okay, the spelling kind of got me on that.
• 20:33
Speaker 10: I think that they ke combined pizza Barbarossa, Okay, and
• 20:36
Speaker 10: then the Crak place up in South Charleston.
• 20:39
Speaker 11: I think that they can get all of that yummy
• 20:40
  Speaker 11: stuff over there.
• 20:41
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 20:41
Speaker 2: All right, our resident food critic, Amanda McDonald is here
• 20:45
Speaker 2: from the West Virginia. You know what you got to eat?
• 20:49
Speaker 2: I started eating when I was really really young, Amanda,
• 20:51
Speaker 2: and just never got out of the habit. It's a
• 20:54
Speaker 2: it's a thing, the thing about you know what Millie
• 20:56
Speaker 2: talks about with the Mediterranean diet. It's actually good. I
• 21:00
Speaker 2: mean if you like that, and there's people like what
• 21:02
Speaker 2: they I was raised. You eat what's on your plate.
• 21:04
Speaker 2: You don't ask questions. So I have that kind of
• 21:06
Speaker 2: a palate that I can literally eat anything. And but
• 21:11
Speaker 2: the food is really good. I mean I love that.
• 21:13
Speaker 2: I love that stuff.
• 21:14
Speaker 11: Anything with fresh ingredients it's going to be great.
• 21:16
Speaker 2: Fresh ingredients is good. All right. So what's going on
• 21:19
Speaker 2: with the Western Neian Symphony.
• 21:21
Speaker 10: Well, we have got lots of stuff going on right now.
• 21:23
Speaker 10: I am really really excited. This Saturday and Sunday, we're
• 21:26
Speaker 10: actually going to be doing some Shakespeare on.
• 21:28
Speaker 11: Stage with the orchestra.
• 21:29
Speaker 10: Okay, yeah, so we are going to be joined by
• 21:32
Speaker 10: our friends at the WU School of Theater and Dance,
• 21:35
Speaker 10: and the second half of the show we're going to
• 21:37
Speaker 10: be playing pro kobms Romeo and Juliet, and in between
• 21:40
Speaker 10: pieces of the orchestra playing our actor friends are going
• 21:42
Speaker 10: to be performing pieces of Shakespeare's famous love Famous the
• 21:48
Speaker 10: Love Fact on stage.
• 21:49
  Speaker 11: We're really excited.
• 21:50
Speaker 2: Nice, So, how did this all come about? Is this
• 21:52
Speaker 2: something that you've done in the past.
• 21:53
Speaker 10: So we have we're a really great relationship with WU
• 21:56
Speaker 10: as all of our different colleges throughout the state. We
• 21:59
Speaker 10: actually have a love our musicians, our professors at ABU,
• 22:02
Speaker 10: so we have got a really great connection. In last fall,
• 22:06
Speaker 10: we connected with the puppetry department and they created some amazing,
• 22:09
Speaker 10: humongous puppets to go alongside tre Vincy's Firebird on stage.
• 22:14
Speaker 11: So that went over super well.
• 22:15
Speaker 10: And Maurice Cone, our music director, loves to try to
• 22:18
Speaker 10: do some new and fun, innovative things to pair with
• 22:22
Speaker 10: our classical music, and this just really seemed to be
• 22:25
Speaker 10: a great fit. So we're really excited to welcome some
• 22:28
Speaker 10: actors on stage. At the beginning of this show and
• 22:30
Speaker 10: the Charleston performance, we're going to be welcoming our youth
• 22:32
Speaker 10: Symphony on stage two to do a side by side
• 22:35
Speaker 10: with the orchestra. So Saturday's concerts are really going to
• 22:38
Speaker 10: be a lot of community and state collaborations, which you're
• 22:42
Speaker 10: really excited to do.
• 22:43
Speaker 2: Good stuff because stuff you can we're talking about the
• 22:44
Speaker 2: man the McDonald from the Syphony Orchestra, and you're talking
• 22:46
Speaker 2: about Maurice, your director, who's been on the show with
• 22:49
Speaker 2: us several times in the past. One of the things
• 22:52
Speaker 2: I love about what he does and what you guys
• 22:55
Speaker 2: as a group do is that it's not just I mean, look,
• 22:58
Speaker 2: when you say symphony, people kind of think, oh, it's
• 23:01
Speaker 2: nose up in the air. It's kind of it's far
• 23:04
Speaker 2: from it. I mean, because I've been to the performances.
• 23:06
Speaker 2: I mean, you guys do a lot of fun stuff
• 23:08
Speaker 2: and a lot of times stuff that people wouldn't expect,
• 23:12
Speaker 2: and it's really really cool the way you do it.
• 23:15
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 23:15
Speaker 10: Well, and it's something that we love to be able
• 23:17
Speaker 10: to bring have those kind of two worlds to meet.
• 23:20
Speaker 10: West Virginia has such a rich music history and a
• 23:24
Speaker 10: rich cultural history too, and we have some amazing groups
• 23:27
Speaker 10: that perform throughout the state and it's really exciting whenever
• 23:30
Speaker 10: we can welcome those to participate and kind of have
• 23:34
Speaker 10: those two worlds meet.
• 23:36
Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, we could not be more excited to
• 23:39
Speaker 11: partner with I mean, the School of Theater Dance at
• 23:41
  Speaker 11: w IS.
• 23:43
Speaker 10: You know, fantastic. These students have been working really really hard.
• 23:46
Speaker 10: They're gonna everything's gonna come together really really quickly.
• 23:49
  Speaker 5: This week.
• 23:50
Speaker 10: We've got rehearsals on Thursday and Friday, and then one
• 23:53
Speaker 10: more on Saturday morning, So four rehearsals for this whole
• 23:55
Speaker 10: big thing to have about fifty music orchestra of musicians
• 23:59
Speaker 10: come together, I think about fifteen different actors on stage.
• 24:02
Speaker 10: And then if you add in our youth symphony, we've
• 24:04
Speaker 10: got a lot of different removing parts. And it's one
• 24:06
Speaker 10: of those things where I just really am excited to
• 24:08
Speaker 10: be able to bring this to our you know, it's
• 24:12
Speaker 10: such a special thing for us to have not only
• 24:13
Speaker 10: and they cannot value but in the state.
• 24:15
Speaker 2: Talking to Aman McDonald again for the West Virginia Symphony

• 24:35
Speaker 2: you understand your environment because what you don't know can
• 24:38
Speaker 2: hurt you. Talk about the importance of getting youth, the
• 24:41
Speaker 2: utes involved in this stuff.
• 24:43
Speaker 11: In the young people, well, I mean they are the future, right.
• 24:46
Speaker 10: I mean if we do not continue to have our
• 24:49
Speaker 10: youth involved, and not only classical music, but music and
• 24:53
Speaker 10: arts in general, we will not be able to continue
• 24:55
Speaker 10: on these on for the next generations and generations. We
• 24:58
Speaker 10: have such a very strong Western Youth Symphony, so this
• 25:01
Speaker 10: is something we look forward to every single year, bringing
• 25:03
Speaker 10: them on stage with the orchestra musicians. They get a
• 25:05
Speaker 10: sip side by side. A lot of times middle schoolers
• 25:08
Speaker 10: and high schoolers besides these professional musicians that really could
• 25:11
Speaker 10: see themselves in that spot in the next five, ten.
• 25:14
  Speaker 11: Fifteen years.
• 25:15
Speaker 10: Even so, I think it's a really fun way to
• 25:19
Speaker 10: have an adult professional meet a young amateur. But it's
• 25:22
Speaker 10: also a really great way to show these students what
• 25:25
Speaker 10: their future could be. A lot of these a lot
• 25:28
Speaker 10: of kids don't necessarily get a step foot on the
• 25:30
Speaker 10: clay Center stage, which is such an exciting part anyway,
• 25:34
Speaker 10: that just to be able to sit on the stage
• 25:36
Speaker 10: with those red seats in the background, with the acoustic
• 25:39
Speaker 10: set of Hall provides is just such an amazing experience.
• 25:42
Speaker 10: And when we can get some youth into playing music
• 25:47
Speaker 10: and acting and doing all of these things in the
• 25:50
Speaker 10: creative outlet, it really is going to give us such
• 25:52
Speaker 10: a good foundation for their future.
• 25:54
Speaker 2: Well, and you know the reason I asked that is
• 25:56
Speaker 2: because the knock on these kids today is that it's
• 26:00
Speaker 2: hard to get some kids motivated to want to do anything.
• 26:03
Speaker 2: I mean, even numbers in sports are when you go
• 26:06
Speaker 2: to certain schools, will tell you that we can't get
• 26:08
Speaker 2: kids to come out anymore. Not every kid if they do,
• 26:10
Speaker 2: if they choose, I mean, not every kid is going
• 26:12
Speaker 2: to be a star athlete. And I'm a big believer
• 26:15
Speaker 2: in any educator will I don't have kids, but any
• 26:17
Speaker 2: educator will tell you that you get kids involved in something,
• 26:22
Speaker 2: you know, have them whether it's theater, whether it's dance,
• 26:24
Speaker 2: whether it's music, whether it's football, whether it's what whatever,
• 26:27
Speaker 2: their church whatever, get them get them involved in something
• 26:30
Speaker 2: that they care about.
• 26:31
Speaker 10: Oh yeah, Well, and we have a lot of different
• 26:33
Speaker 10: opportunities for youth and students and kids to get involved
• 26:37
Speaker 10: with the symphony. We do our yearly Young People's concerts,
• 26:40
Speaker 10: which we actually bust kids in from all over the
• 26:44
Speaker 10: state to different locations.
• 26:45
Speaker 11: We were in Clarksburg and Morgantown, in.
• 26:48
Speaker 10: Parksburg, Parkersburg, Charleston in these past few years, so really
• 26:52
Speaker 10: bringing them to the art is really awesome.
• 26:54
Speaker 11: And then we have.
• 26:55
Speaker 10: Such a great program with our string educators in the
• 26:57
Speaker 10: Cannock County to where we actually have are some of
• 27:00
Speaker 10: our musicians, some of our employees are string educators and
• 27:03
Speaker 10: they go out into the community into the schools as
• 27:05
Speaker 10: well too, So it's a really great way to kind
• 27:07
Speaker 10: of get everybody tasted. And yeah, I mean, we got
• 27:09
Speaker 10: to keep these kids motivated and excited for things. And
• 27:12
Speaker 10: we have this amazing program called our WBSO Passport program
• 27:15
Speaker 10: for these is for students twelve and under. They get
• 27:18
Speaker 10: a free passport like a paper passport you would get
• 27:20
Speaker 10: to be able to go around the world, but this
• 27:23
Speaker 10: is who go to all of our symphony concerts for
• 27:24
Speaker 10: the year. So that passport they take it to the
• 27:26
Speaker 10: box office will get them a free ticket and their parent.
• 27:29
Speaker 10: We have stamps for the passport and prizes you in
• 27:31
Speaker 10: at the end. But things like that are programs that
• 27:34
Speaker 10: we really look forward to. Have brought in a ton
• 27:36
Speaker 10: of new faces, old and young, so we really look
• 27:39
Speaker 10: forward to kind of continuing to push those things and
• 27:43
Speaker 10: continuing to bring young faces into this orchestra.
• 27:46
Speaker 2: And a text here Amanda said, do you have a
• 27:47
Speaker 2: playlist available for the March fourteenth music for the Big Screen?
• 27:51
Speaker 2: Is it all John Williams?
• 27:52
Speaker 10: It is not all John Williams. I will give you
• 27:54
Speaker 10: a little hit. We do have some John Williams. We've
• 27:57
Speaker 10: definitely can't have a music show without John. Yeah, for sure,
• 28:01
Speaker 10: and that will be posted a little bit as we
• 28:03
Speaker 10: get closer. We like to and sometimes announce those selections
• 28:07
Speaker 10: from the stage make it really exciting. But that show
• 28:10
Speaker 10: will have lots of John Williams. I'm excited. We'll be
• 28:12
Speaker 10: doing some Henry Mancini and Moon River, so you've got
• 28:16
Speaker 10: a lot of taste of them of the music in
• 28:19
Speaker 10: the movies, so that'll be a really fun one. I
• 28:21
Speaker 10: always sell our pop series is if you are not
• 28:23
Speaker 10: familiar with classical music, it's a great way to step
• 28:25
Speaker 10: your toe in and get excited. It's familiar music that
• 28:29
Speaker 10: you're used to listening to, but in a really great,
• 28:31
Speaker 10: a fund new setting.
• 28:32
Speaker 2: I think you and I talked about this once before.
• 28:34
Speaker 2: One of my favorite things to go down the rabbit
• 28:36
Speaker 2: hole if I'm listening to music is to go and
• 28:39
Speaker 2: find music that are just incredible mashups. And I mean
• 28:44
Speaker 2: Metallica performed with the Melbourne Orchestra and it's one of
• 28:49
Speaker 2: the most you can find it on YouTube. It's one
• 28:50
Speaker 2: of the most amazing concerts that you'll ever see. Metallica,
• 28:53
Speaker 2: the Mighty Metallica, Ok. Yeah, with the orchestra.
• 28:56
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 28:57
Speaker 10: Well. And I think classical music is has an air
• 29:01
Speaker 10: of it sometimes we think of it in a certain way,
• 29:04
Speaker 10: but it really is wonderfully accessible. We have seen orchestras
• 29:08
Speaker 10: perform not only with heavy metal music bands like Metallica,
• 29:11
Speaker 10: but with rap artists, to do movie concerts in different
• 29:15
Speaker 10: music and actually bring the stage and the film to
• 29:19
Speaker 10: life along with the orchestra underneath of it. So there's
• 29:22
Speaker 10: a lot of ways to make what we think of
• 29:25
Speaker 10: as you know, high tooting.
• 29:27
Speaker 11: I'm really really accessible.
• 29:29
Speaker 10: And I think our musicians here at this West Virginia
• 29:32
Speaker 10: Symphony here and Charleston specifically do an excellent job of
• 29:36
Speaker 10: meshing our classical music in with our community music too.
• 29:41
Speaker 10: Dave Porter, who is a fantastic trumpeter around town, is
• 29:44
Speaker 10: one of our very highly touted classical trumpeters too. So
• 29:49
Speaker 10: musicians can play lots for different hats, and I think
• 29:51
Speaker 10: that that's a really great way to kind of span
• 29:53
  Speaker 10: the horizon too.
• 29:54
Speaker 2: Let me give you another one. You can look up
• 29:55
Speaker 2: and you're gonna tell you and you're going to say, Dave,
• 29:57
Speaker 2: you've been drinking, okay, but I have not? Okay, all right, uh,
• 30:01
Speaker 2: And you can find it on YouTube. Sir mix a
• 30:03
Speaker 2: lot with this Seattle Symphony doing Baby Got Back. Yeah,
• 30:09
Speaker 2: it's killer. I mean, you got to look at it well,
• 30:11
  Speaker 2: and is it.
• 30:12
Speaker 10: You cannot get more of a collaboration or more of
• 30:16
Speaker 10: a way to touch people by then combining a classical
• 30:20
Speaker 10: violin with sir mix a lot fun.
• 30:22
Speaker 2: I mean, And I just remember looking up that clip
• 30:24
Speaker 2: and again it's available on YouTube, that that clip of
• 30:27
Speaker 2: seeing these musicians in their tuxedos and whatever, and the
• 30:31
Speaker 2: expressions on their face when they get to the intro
• 30:36
Speaker 2: the I like big butts and I cannot lie. It's
• 30:39
Speaker 2: it's it's good stuff. I mean really yeah.
• 30:42
Speaker 10: Well it's one of those things where I mean, good
• 30:43
Speaker 10: music regardless of what, regardless of it's classical music or
• 30:47
Speaker 10: pop or rap or heavy metal, makes us move, It
• 30:49
Speaker 10: makes us excited. And I think what we're doing with
• 30:52
Speaker 10: the symphony is definitely that.
• 30:54
Speaker 2: You got another suggestion here. As huge as the re
• 30:57
Speaker 2: emergence of Elvis has been over the last few years, well,
• 30:59
Speaker 2: they consider an Elvis theme show, maybe with an Elvis
• 31:03
  Speaker 2: tribute artist.
• 31:04
Speaker 11: I love that, Dave. I absolutely love that.
• 31:06
Speaker 10: We work on trying to bring things like that to
• 31:10
Speaker 10: our pop series all the time, so I will definitely
• 31:11
Speaker 10: take that suggestion back. We are actually getting really really
• 31:14
Speaker 10: close to finalizing our twenty six twenty seven season for
• 31:18
Speaker 10: next year, so Elvis may not be on this late
• 31:20
Speaker 10: for next year, but maybe in the years to come.
• 31:23
Speaker 11: I'm really really excited about what we do have.
• 31:25
Speaker 10: To offer for twenty six twenty seven. They're again finalizing
• 31:28
Speaker 10: that right now. They've got me under lock and key,
• 31:31
Speaker 10: but here really really soon. I'm excited to it. Well,
• 31:34
Speaker 10: we'll be excited to announce that and all of these
• 31:37
Speaker 10: mashups and things that we talk about are going to
• 31:39
Speaker 10: be really represented in the next season.
• 31:41
Speaker 11: So again I'm really excited. They keep telling me I
• 31:43
  Speaker 11: have to keep.
• 31:43
Speaker 2: My cross mother, and I don't want to get you fired.
• 31:45
Speaker 11: Okay, I'm not very good to keep a secrets.
• 31:47
Speaker 2: And somebody along the same line Sex and about Trans
• 31:49
Speaker 2: Siberian Orchestra. I mean, that's a good example of somebody
• 31:53
Speaker 2: who took some really really great music and did it
• 31:56
Speaker 2: in a totally different way. You think about their Christmas stuff,
• 31:58
Speaker 2: but they go well beyond the Christmas stuff too.
• 32:00
Speaker 11: Oh yeah, for sure.
• 32:01
Speaker 2: All right, give us a rundown of your upcoming shows again.
• 32:03

• 36:36
Speaker 2: Valentine's thing, and then they kind of morphed into the
• 36:39
Speaker 2: beach party thing. And of course the highlight last year
• 36:43
Speaker 2: was Steve Annimal showing up in a Hawaiian style shirt. Then,
• 36:48
Speaker 2: in addition to palm trees and all the things you
• 36:50
Speaker 2: would think of a shirt like that, it actually had

• 37:45

• 37:51
Speaker 2: there's a clip of Steven Tyler of Aerosmith doing amazing Grace.
• 37:57
Speaker 2: And you would think that when you say that allowed
• 38:00
Speaker 2: that like the it's in a church with some other
• 38:04
Speaker 2: gospel singers, you would think that the church would just
• 38:06
Speaker 2: implode on site. A good singer or a good performer,
• 38:10
Speaker 2: a good musician is a good musician, no matter what
• 38:12

Speaker 2: big stuff happening over the next twenty four hours, I'm told,
• 39:24
Speaker 2: insider info as it pertains to the City of Charleston
• 39:29
Speaker 2: and projects. We'll have details on that coming up on

Speaker 2: due respect, could probably not be any more different, but
• 39:45
Speaker 2: they are aligned on a similar cause and it has
• 39:50
Speaker 2: to do with proposed term limits for elected officials in
• 39:53
Speaker 2: the city of Charleston. They're going to join me to

Speaker 2: That's not it, Okay, I'm going through my phone here,
• 40:10
Speaker 2: you know, trying live radio here, trying to find it.
• 40:13
Speaker 2: But yeah, there's gonna be a big event at the Capitol,
• 40:16
Speaker 2: and of course, of course I can't find it right now.

• 40:34
Speaker 2: wv Metronews dot com. The Canawa County Board of Education
• 40:37
Speaker 2: has approved a three year contract extension for Superintendent Paula Potter. Now,
• 40:41
Speaker 2: Jeff talked with school board president Rick Cavett, who said, quote,
• 40:44
Speaker 2: we're all very impressed with the level of detail doctor
• 40:48
Speaker 2: Potter is giving when it comes to leading the system
• 40:53
Speaker 2: in quotes. Now, in the meantime, you probably have heard
• 40:59
Speaker 2: that the Canal is looking at cutting something like one
• 41:01
Speaker 2: hundred and forty jobs for the next school year. That
• 41:04
Speaker 2: announcement came out around noon on Monday, and according to
• 41:06
Speaker 2: a release from the board's office, these cuts should not
• 41:10
Speaker 2: result in future school closures. The school system has somewhere
• 41:15
Speaker 2: in the neighborhood of about nine hundred and seventy students
• 41:19
Speaker 2: that have left the system. I think that was as
• 41:20
Speaker 2: of a couple of years ago. They're still looking at
• 41:22
Speaker 2: the system, but it's about nine hundred and seventy students
• 41:24
Speaker 2: that have left the school board or I'm sorry the

• 41:56
Speaker 2: may be coming to an end, the Charleston Gazette mail
• 41:59
Speaker 2: this morning is giving praise giving praise to West Virginia
• 42:04
Speaker 2: Secretary of State Chris Warner for refusing the Trump administration
• 42:09
Speaker 2: request to turn over election data, which would be a
• 42:13
Speaker 2: direct violation of West Virginia state law. We talked about
• 42:17
Speaker 2: a little bit last week and midday the boys talked
• 42:19
Speaker 2: about it on talk line with Secretary Warner. But look
• 42:23
Speaker 2: editorializing on my part now, he did the right thing.
• 42:26
Speaker 2: As the Gazette pointed out, elections are under the banner
• 42:29
Speaker 2: of state business, they're not federal government. And again, and
• 42:35
Speaker 2: I'm just beating the old Samuel drum here more examples
• 42:39
Speaker 2: my opinion of certain Republicans in power wanting to take
• 42:44
Speaker 2: things out of local control and have it under the
• 42:48
Speaker 2: thumb of DC or in many cases Charleston. It's totally,
• 42:56
Speaker 2: in my opinion, totally Unrepublican and totally unconservative, because conservatives,
• 43:03
Speaker 2: I thought, and Republicans I thought, we're about smaller government,
• 43:07
Speaker 2: keeping DC, keeping Charleston out of your life. So I
• 43:14
Speaker 2: almost spit my coffee out this morning because I'm the
• 43:16
Speaker 2: guy that still you know, reads the hard copy of
• 43:18
Speaker 2: the paper Rip Dug scaff and I just picked it up.
• 43:23
Speaker 2: And they're praising Secretary of State Chris Warner on the
• 43:27
Speaker 2: op ed pages of the gazetemail. Soon dogs will be
• 43:31
Speaker 2: sleeping with cats and so on and so forth. Texas.
• 43:34
Speaker 2: Why does five eighty have news segments about doctor Paula
• 43:37
Speaker 2: Potter's salary? Been hearing it all morning. You almost be
• 43:39
Speaker 2: pandering to them. Maybe she shouldn't be paid so much
• 43:42
Speaker 2: and other people would have jobs crowd In my opinion,
• 43:45
Speaker 2: she got hired to, says a Textter, at least catastrophically
• 43:48
Speaker 2: as possible, land a plane that's low on fuel and
• 43:51
Speaker 2: as an engine on fire. I'd want more than one
• 43:53
Speaker 2: hundred and eighty thousand dollars to be the face of
• 43:55
Speaker 2: consolidation and job cuts. Well, I mean, that's part of
• 43:58
Speaker 2: the story. I mean, And look, I have no problem
• 44:02
Speaker 2: with paying people what they're worth. And doctor Paula Potter
• 44:05
Speaker 2: is the superintendent of Canalla County School's largest school system
• 44:08
Speaker 2: in the state, and She's been an employee for thirty years,
• 44:12
Speaker 2: and I think us reporting this salary is not the
• 44:15
Speaker 2: same as damning her for it or the school system.
• 44:19
Speaker 2: It's just it's just the fact they got a contract extension,
• 44:22
Speaker 2: and that's what she makes public record. Texas. I thought
• 44:25
Speaker 2: Trump was good for Cole. Why have over one thousand
• 44:28
Speaker 2: coal jobs been cut since Trump started the second term?
• 44:30
Speaker 2: Tariffs don't have any effect on export and markets, do
• 44:33
Speaker 2: they question Mark? Nope, it's all Obama and Biden and
• 44:35

• 48:39
Speaker 2: yesterday about three o'clock yesterday afternoon, I had to make

Speaker 2: or I thought it was going to be quick. Tractor
• 48:47
Speaker 2: trailer overturned and round the interest to the shops at
• 48:52
Speaker 2: trace Fork. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how
• 48:54
Speaker 2: that happened. They had to reroute traffic around the stores up.
• 48:58
Speaker 2: There was a mess for a while, still fouled up
• 49:01
Speaker 2: in the southbound lane when I came back through around

Speaker 2: Fork and TG. I know you're very familiar with that area.
• 49:52
