- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. My name
- 0:08Speaker 1: is Beaumontie Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you get your podcasts.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like, rate us,
- 0:14Speaker 1: review us, give us five stars. You only give us
- 0:16Speaker 1: four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are a hater.
- 0:20Speaker 1: It is the time of week where we have a
- 0:21Speaker 1: guest join us. Coming to us live from Atlanta, GA.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Check him out at Channel 6. He is the best
- 0:28Speaker 1: college football writer in America. And his name is Spencer Hall.
- 0:31Speaker 1: What's going on, brother?
- 0:33Speaker 2: How are you, sir?
- 0:34Speaker 1: I'm good, man. Uh, by the way, just curious, like,
- 0:37Speaker 1: did you, did you, uh, see everybody screaming USA for
- 0:40Speaker 1: Ben Shelton when he was playing against Alcaraz?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Uh, no, because that was at three 30 in the morning.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I heard about it. I heard about it. I didn't
- 0:48Speaker 1: actually watch it. Uh, but I'm just curious as I
- 0:50Speaker 1: saw them do that. Um, do you think they know
- 0:53Speaker 1: that Ben Shelton is, you.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Know, a band? I mean, how's this? Um, There is
- 1:04Speaker 2: a sphere, okay, circle, if you want to do this, okay,
- 1:07Speaker 2: around New York. And in 30 miles in any direction
- 1:11Speaker 2: from New York, you can start just chanting USA, and
- 1:15Speaker 2: it's fine. Okay. For anyone. For anyone. I mean, that's
- 1:19Speaker 2: a New York thing, right? That's like a Jets thing,
- 1:21Speaker 2: like when the Jets fumble. It's like, USA!
- 1:23Speaker 1: USA!
- 1:24Speaker 2: They can just do it. Okay. It's like... Yeah, so
- 1:27Speaker 2: I think that's my New York exception to it. It
- 1:29Speaker 2: doesn't have to make sense.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Got it. Me and my people normally don't get the
- 1:32Speaker 1: Hacksaw Jim Duggan treatment. You understand what I'm saying? And
- 1:35Speaker 1: I'm just waiting with Ben. I'm not sure they knew.
- 1:37Speaker 1: One person I talked to today did not know. And
- 1:39Speaker 1: so I was wondering if maybe that, you know, maybe
- 1:42Speaker 1: we're making this kind of progress, right? The 2024 basketball
- 1:45Speaker 1: team at the Olympics got treated like that. Maybe it's
- 1:48Speaker 1: a whole new day.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I would hope. I would hope. But we have now
- 1:53Speaker 2: USA versus USA. Okay. So whenever it happens.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Well, yeah, we have USA versus USA, but where I
- 1:59Speaker 1: don't know if everybody knows about big, everybody do know
- 2:02Speaker 1: about big folk. You understand what I'm saying? So it's
- 2:05Speaker 1: going to be interesting seeing what the divisions is going
- 2:07Speaker 1: to be.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Tennis fans are notorious. I think tennis fans are the
- 2:10Speaker 2: best kind of mercenary. They go with whoever the hot
- 2:13Speaker 2: hand is. So if somebody, it's like wrestling fans. If
- 2:16Speaker 2: one of those guys is putting on the full i'm
- 2:19Speaker 2: blading sweating nine comebacks right if they're doing that tennis
- 2:24Speaker 2: fans will typically just go with them right yes i'm
- 2:26Speaker 2: hoping what i'm hoping is what i hope with most
- 2:29Speaker 2: sports events in 2026 the dorsh that like like we
- 2:32Speaker 2: go ahead and bring everyone in and we don't there's
- 2:35Speaker 2: nothing outside bleeding in because what's outside is bad right
- 2:39Speaker 2: we don't want any of that.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Yeah but as i ate us open it gets to
- 2:44Speaker 1: cracking it gets to cracking uh speaking of cracking i'm
- 2:47Speaker 1: lane kiffin thing is off to a roaring start right
- 2:49Speaker 1: we have already decided he's going to be without if
- 2:52Speaker 1: nothing else the singular figure of september because they are
- 2:55Speaker 1: going to be the story for three weeks in september
- 2:58Speaker 1: but the one thing that we didn't think was going
- 3:00Speaker 1: to happen was that the southeastern conference was going to
- 3:03Speaker 1: threaten to expel one of its founding members yeah in
- 3:09Speaker 1: the first month of the season so if you don't
- 3:11Speaker 1: know this It's this thing where basically, it's an existential question.
- 3:15Speaker 1: What is a professional? And now that the guys in
- 3:17Speaker 1: college get paid money, it's kind of hard to argue
- 3:20Speaker 1: that they're not professionals. Anyway, had a couple guys, went
- 3:24Speaker 1: to some NFL training camps. They did not make the teams.
- 3:27Speaker 1: They come back down because now the NCAA says you
- 3:30Speaker 1: have five years to play. And these guys are like,
- 3:32Speaker 1: it would have been my fifth year. People have been
- 3:34Speaker 1: winning lawsuits to allow the players to come back for
- 3:38Speaker 1: the fifth year. LSU at the Southeastern Conference rather is like, nah,
- 3:42Speaker 1: if you sign for a pro team, we don't want
- 3:44Speaker 1: you to come and play. And LSU was like, well,
- 3:46Speaker 1: what if we do? Well, what if we do? They
- 3:49Speaker 1: have closed the roster. So these guys can't play. But
- 3:52Speaker 1: they were ready at the very least to give the
- 3:55Speaker 1: posture that they were going to kick LSU out of
- 3:58Speaker 1: the conference for daring to try to play these guys. That, again,
- 4:03Speaker 1: to be fair, the courts have kind of said should
- 4:06Speaker 1: be able to play.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Because it's a market. And because, again, the Supreme Court
- 4:10Speaker 2: for the better part of almost 10 years now has
- 4:13Speaker 2: basically said, come on, come on through, just do it.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Like literally inviting people to open up whatever lane this
- 4:21Speaker 2: is for strafing the NCAA and amateurism out of existence.
- 4:25Speaker 2: And there are suits and they are in process and
- 4:28Speaker 2: some have already gone through, but I am still astonished
- 4:32Speaker 2: that there aren't more of them. And maybe this is
- 4:35Speaker 2: yet another opportunity to open a few of those up. But,
- 4:39Speaker 2: This is the astonishing thing about this case. Essentially, the
- 4:44Speaker 2: SEC is accusing LSU, the institution, of not having control
- 4:50Speaker 2: of the football program. At all. Yes. And stretching so
- 4:56Speaker 2: much that they used Lane Kiffin's halftime comments to Holly Rowe,
- 5:00Speaker 2: where beating Clemson's ass at halftime, Lane Kiffin said, oh, well, hey,
- 5:06Speaker 2: imagine if we'd had pro players. Yes. Now, this is
- 5:11Speaker 2: case one for why you don't ever want to represent
- 5:13Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin in court. Don't. Don't. You know how your
- 5:19Speaker 2: worst enemy as a lawyer is your client? That is
- 5:23Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin to the nth power because the mouth is
- 5:26Speaker 2: on and it's going to say what it wants to
- 5:28Speaker 2: say even if it's not legally sound. So, attorneys, if
- 5:33Speaker 2: you want to make a lot of money in a
- 5:35Speaker 2: very short span of time and then dump a client,
- 5:37Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin is ready when you are. The other thing
- 5:40Speaker 2: is the astonishing claim that the football program is not
- 5:42Speaker 2: controlled by the university. That is, to me, the most
- 5:47Speaker 2: unprecedented part of this because that is everyone else in
- 5:51Speaker 2: this club. A bunch of universities who are essentially pass-throughs
- 5:55Speaker 2: for this money that they've never had any idea how
- 5:58Speaker 2: to handle. They've never had any idea what to do with.
- 6:01Speaker 2: That's them saying, you're threatening to blow up the spot. Yes.
- 6:07Speaker 2: We're still doing this. We're still doing this.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Get her in, well, in this case, a figurative her.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Get her in check.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. I understand that sounds crude, but that is
- 6:19Speaker 2: what they're saying. That is what they're saying. And this
- 6:22Speaker 2: is also extends beyond. I know I just said I
- 6:25Speaker 2: don't want to invite anything beyond the field, but it's
- 6:28Speaker 2: inevitable in this case. It also extends to the governor,
- 6:31Speaker 2: Jeff Landry, who's been a mess with all things LSU
- 6:35Speaker 2: for at least the past year and a half. or
- 6:38Speaker 2: at least best year this extends to the president of
- 6:42Speaker 2: the university this extends to the entire political apparatus of
- 6:45Speaker 2: louisiana which as we know famously does sometimes enjoy putting
- 6:50Speaker 2: its fingers in the pie of lsu athletics in a
- 6:53Speaker 2: very intrusive way go look it up i love saying
- 6:57Speaker 2: this you say like oh man we're talking before the
- 6:59Speaker 2: show about you know like various things about getting older
- 7:01Speaker 2: i love this stuff because you get to tell the
- 7:04Speaker 2: kids you get to tell the kids hey the governor
- 7:07Speaker 2: of louisiana at one point, led the band onto the field.
- 7:12Speaker 2: The governor of Louisiana at one point walked into the
- 7:16Speaker 2: offices at LSU and said, you need to fire the
- 7:19Speaker 2: band director because he didn't think it was hot. He
- 7:21Speaker 2: didn't think they were killing it. And he walked in
- 7:24Speaker 2: and said, hey, you guys need to fire him. The
- 7:26Speaker 2: guy's like, well, who are you? And he's like, I'm
- 7:28Speaker 2: Huey Long, the governor of Louisiana.
- 7:30Speaker 1: That's fact.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I'm not making any of that up. Huey Long co-wrote,
- 7:34Speaker 2: co-wrote one of the fight songs for LSU. That's, These
- 7:39Speaker 2: are all true things. So the level, by the way,
- 7:42Speaker 2: this is now LSU being demure. I think this is
- 7:44Speaker 2: LSU being mature because considering the level of political meddling
- 7:49Speaker 2: that's going on at that program prior to this, like 50, 70,
- 7:54Speaker 2: 80 years prior, it's nothing.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Or how about the meddling just from, what, seven, eight
- 8:01Speaker 1: months ago and it got laying here in the first place?
- 8:03Speaker 2: Yeah. We just decided that was going to happen. We
- 8:06Speaker 2: just decided it was going to happen and it happened.
- 8:08Speaker 2: And we haven't even recovered from that. Consider that they were,
- 8:13Speaker 2: took a coach from a rival, from a rival, like,
- 8:17Speaker 2: like over there, right there, not distant, not historic, but
- 8:22Speaker 2: not like only historical, no real life rival. They took
- 8:24Speaker 2: old Mrs. Head coach.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Hold on with a helping hand from their former head
- 8:29Speaker 1: coach who became their arch nemesis.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:34Speaker 2: And, To show you how tied up all of this
- 8:36Speaker 2: is politically, and college football can be kind of incestuous,
- 8:39Speaker 2: this is all tied in to a larger struggle over
- 8:44Speaker 2: what college athletics is going to look like, which is
- 8:47Speaker 2: right now, and I say this because on my phone,
- 8:51Speaker 2: I got a text message from my friend Nick Saban
- 8:53Speaker 2: who wants me to support the Save College Sports, whatever
- 8:57Speaker 2: that bullshit is. It doesn't matter. It's going to die.
- 9:00Speaker 2: It won't pass. Congress won't do anything about it. They're
- 9:02Speaker 2: going to have to save themselves. I got a text
- 9:05Speaker 2: message from him, former LSU coach, by the way, who
- 9:11Speaker 2: allegedly when he was at LSU had a really interesting
- 9:14Speaker 2: relationship with the boosters of that program. Interesting is the
- 9:17Speaker 2: way I can put it without saying things that are
- 9:19Speaker 2: perhaps legally actionable. Yeah, that's all tied together of a piece.
- 9:26Speaker 2: By the way, this is also how I learned if
- 9:27Speaker 2: you type the words fuck off, to some of these
- 9:30Speaker 2: bots they'll go you've been unsubscribed that's it you don't
- 9:33Speaker 2: have to hit unsubscribe if you just say fuck off
- 9:37Speaker 2: they'll be like ah yes we're out.
- 9:39Speaker 1: So I think the thing for LSU and God knows
- 9:42Speaker 1: like how they're feeling in the offices or whatever like
- 9:45Speaker 1: how seriously they took this threat of the SEC putting
- 9:49Speaker 1: it on the calendar they were going to vote over
- 9:51Speaker 1: your expulsion everything else right like don't know exactly what
- 9:54Speaker 1: the motivations were that made people do whatever the thing
- 9:57Speaker 1: is as you mentioned with Lane and the lawyer and
- 10:00Speaker 1: client analogy, Lane is that guy who doesn't understand when
- 10:08Speaker 1: this has stopped being funny. He doesn't, like, there's a
- 10:12Speaker 1: moment where you look up and you're like, oh, wait
- 10:15Speaker 1: a minute. This shit isn't funny anymore, right? Nope, we
- 10:20Speaker 1: need to stop right now. Doesn't matter if you're right
- 10:22Speaker 1: or wrong. This ain't funny no more, and you need
- 10:25Speaker 1: to let it go. You ever been like, go ahead
- 10:26Speaker 1: and finish what you're saying, then I'll say my thing,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and then they say the thing, and you're like, oh,
- 10:31Speaker 1: my thing, doesn't matter. I had a situation once where
- 10:34Speaker 1: I had somebody I was related to, and I told
- 10:37Speaker 1: her that I thought her boyfriend was a little lame.
- 10:41Speaker 1: And I had a very good reason for thinking that
- 10:43Speaker 1: that dude had done something that I found to be very,
- 10:45Speaker 1: very offensive when I met him and I just let
- 10:47Speaker 1: it ride or whatever. But then that cousin told me
- 10:50Speaker 1: that they were going to be getting married, at which
- 10:52Speaker 1: point what I had to say didn't matter. Shit wasn't
- 10:56Speaker 1: funny no more.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:57Speaker 1: This has gone to a different place and we just
- 10:59Speaker 1: need to let this go. laying with this thing with
- 11:01Speaker 1: the guys. No, no, no. It seemed pretty clear early
- 11:05Speaker 1: that this wasn't going to be funny anymore. Um, Texas
- 11:08Speaker 1: tech took them a long time to realize people didn't
- 11:10Speaker 1: find that Brendan Sorsby thing to be fun. They, they
- 11:13Speaker 1: did like, they got it though. They figured it out.
- 11:16Speaker 1: They're like, okay, so this isn't funny.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Can we point out one pattern though here? Okay. We
- 11:21Speaker 2: started this with Texas tech, Texas tech. If we go
- 11:25Speaker 2: S tier college football programs, like if you're familiar with
- 11:28Speaker 2: the S to F tier, right. Um, Texas Tech is
- 11:31Speaker 2: not S tier. I'd say they're like B tier, historically speaking, right? Lately,
- 11:36Speaker 2: A tier. Like, no shade. But they're all the way
- 11:40Speaker 2: out in Lubbock. There's a ceiling to what they're going
- 11:42Speaker 2: to be. They attempt to challenge some of the rules
- 11:46Speaker 2: governing eligibility, etc. And they're shut down very quickly. Okay, okay, cool.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Do you think people give up on this? No, LSU
- 11:54Speaker 2: tried it. LSU tried it. Not in a coordinated fashion,
- 11:57Speaker 2: but they saw that, and I'm sure they went, Interesting.
- 12:00Speaker 2: There's an opportunity here. And they're going to get shut
- 12:02Speaker 2: down because they don't want to break up the safety
- 12:06Speaker 2: and security of being in the SEC for now. Notice
- 12:10Speaker 2: I said for now. Conferences, I will remind you, everybody,
- 12:14Speaker 2: conferences can evaporate overnight. Yes. They have done that. And
- 12:17Speaker 2: they are vulnerable, right? Again, fun things you get to
- 12:21Speaker 2: tell the kids. Hey, guess what? Everything dies. And everything's vulnerable.
- 12:25Speaker 2: And that includes the SEC. And that includes the Big Ten, right?
- 12:28Speaker 2: Conferences are vulnerable. really insecure and institutions generally are very
- 12:32Speaker 2: insecure and will be very violent in reaction to challenge
- 12:35Speaker 2: because they are always fragile. They are always vulnerable and
- 12:40Speaker 2: they know it. They know it. And so LSU tries
- 12:44Speaker 2: this and they get rebuffed. You think this is done?
- 12:46Speaker 2: This is just started, right? This is what the real
- 12:50Speaker 2: challenge is when you get, this is LSU, by the way,
- 12:53Speaker 2: who I would say that's an STR college football program.
- 12:56Speaker 2: That is, in terms of talent, in terms of resources devoted,
- 12:59Speaker 2: and in terms of institutional commitment. Doubt me. Go look
- 13:02Speaker 2: at what the governor's worried about.
- 13:03Speaker 1: It's an S-tier program, but also a historical underachiever.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Exactly. Exactly. Which, again, relatable. Deeply relatable college football program, right?
- 13:13Speaker 2: You're like, ah, not quite sober. Sometimes shows up late.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Often underachieves. Little messy. You go, oh, I feel you, LSU.
- 13:21Speaker 1: But when they're up, but when they got it.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Going, boy. Oh, but when they're good. When they have
- 13:27Speaker 2: it going, by the way, they're not only the best,
- 13:29Speaker 2: they're the best you want to watch. There are programs
- 13:31Speaker 2: that are consistently better. There are programs that have more championships,
- 13:34Speaker 2: and there are programs that have a greater record of
- 13:38Speaker 2: success and could walk up to LSU and be like,
- 13:40Speaker 2: we're better. Ohio State can walk up and be like, man,
- 13:42Speaker 2: we're a better program. When you're good, though, which one
- 13:46Speaker 2: do I want to watch?
- 13:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:48Speaker 2: I'm sorry. You'll never have the sex appeal of LSU.
- 13:51Speaker 2: And I mean that in so many ways. Because it's
- 13:54Speaker 2: just a little bit sleazy. It's a little sleazy.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Just a little sleazy. We're talking about sex appeal. We're
- 14:00Speaker 1: not talking about beauty.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Listen, Joe Burrow, I can say this, continuing that comparison.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Joe Burrow was at Ohio State, was at LSU. Which
- 14:09Speaker 2: one was more fun to watch? Which one unlocked that?
- 14:13Speaker 2: LSU unlocked that, right? For one year, one hot year,
- 14:16Speaker 2: what happened after that? Ed took boxing lessons. That's what happened.
- 14:20Speaker 1: What happened after that? Ed was bringing single mothers to
- 14:24Speaker 1: practice and letting their children participate in drills.
- 14:29Speaker 2: You know, I have, I will not say anything about
- 14:31Speaker 2: that Ed Ogeron period because he, he earned whatever happened
- 14:35Speaker 2: through a series of life circumstances that y'all are just
- 14:37Speaker 2: going to have to research and read about. I will
- 14:39Speaker 2: also say this, that there were other coaches at LSU
- 14:42Speaker 2: who don't get dinged for that same kind of stuff
- 14:44Speaker 2: where they're there. adventures were much more well-documented and nevertheless
- 14:51Speaker 2: did not receive the same kind of flack. That's all.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Well, that flack came because they were winning seven games.
- 14:59Speaker 2: The number of wins determines the amount of laissez-faire we
- 15:03Speaker 2: will apply to you and your behaviors.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Or more accurately, the number of losses, right?
- 15:09Speaker 2: That's correct.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Because like, for example, Lane Kiffin has only won one
- 15:12Speaker 1: game at LSU, but he hasn't lost any. So LSU
- 15:16Speaker 1: was riding. Bill Belichick, on the other hand, lost a
- 15:19Speaker 1: lot of games. He'll get in shape.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Yeah, allegedly a little bit of a coup attempt there
- 15:26Speaker 2: over the weekend that was rebuffed by Belichick and company.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I will say this, as far as Palace scheming, that
- 15:35Speaker 2: man's a politician. Yeah. That man understands moving the levers
- 15:40Speaker 2: of power. He also understands how to coach a defense,
- 15:42Speaker 2: which is probably going to bail them out to mediocrity.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I'm guessing. I don't think they're going to be rock
- 15:46Speaker 2: bottom ass bad. But they're going to be okay. Yeah, Lane. God,
- 15:53Speaker 2: fucking Lane. Here's the other thing with Lane. You all
- 15:57Speaker 2: gather around and you're like, man, why is this guy
- 15:59Speaker 2: worth it? That's a good football team. That's a really
- 16:02Speaker 2: good football team. I went back and rewatched last night
- 16:06Speaker 2: because the first thing I watched when I watched that game,
- 16:09Speaker 2: you know there's like nine games going on and you
- 16:10Speaker 2: see this one and you go, oh, that's over. Your
- 16:14Speaker 2: critical instinct kind of shuts down when you watch that.
- 16:16Speaker 2: You just go, oh, they're getting their ass beat. What
- 16:18Speaker 2: can I learn from this? Well, went back and watched.
- 16:20Speaker 2: And here's what you need to know. Everyone on that
- 16:22Speaker 2: defense is fiendishly fast. Nobody's really going to be able
- 16:25Speaker 2: to score many points on them unless they have misdirection,
- 16:27Speaker 2: QB run threat, or the ability to go downfield and
- 16:30Speaker 2: actually hit those reads. Clemson had guys open. They did.
- 16:33Speaker 2: They just couldn't hit them. Vecina's just not reading it,
- 16:36Speaker 2: and he was... I don't think he's the answer. They're
- 16:38Speaker 2: probably going to switch to their talented guy, Tate, who's
- 16:40Speaker 2: coming up. But fundamentally, that is a defense and run
- 16:46Speaker 2: first team. They ran the ball 51 times versus Clemson.
- 16:49Speaker 2: They ran for 300 yards. They are monstrous on the ground.
- 16:53Speaker 2: And until someone fixes that or until Sam Levin gets injured,
- 16:56Speaker 2: they're going to be a very difficult out.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Well, the thing I have to give Lane as a
- 17:01Speaker 1: coach that I appreciate because, you know, maybe one day
- 17:04Speaker 1: he'll win a conference. Again, keeping in mind, this is
- 17:07Speaker 1: the third best job that Lane has ever had. One
- 17:10Speaker 1: could argue it's kind of amazing. Um, but one thing
- 17:14Speaker 1: I do appreciate about lane is lane. Ain't necessarily making
- 17:16Speaker 1: this too complex. He has been guilty of that in
- 17:18Speaker 1: the past, but lane basically is he's like a basketball coach.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Who's our best player. Well, why don't we run every
- 17:27Speaker 1: play for him? No matter who it is.
- 17:29Speaker 2: What is it?
- 17:29Speaker 1: What's this thing? The Heisman trophy thing. Like who are
- 17:31Speaker 1: we going to try to get a Heisman trophy this year?
- 17:33Speaker 2: Walk in and just say, Hey man, who wants a Heisman?
- 17:35Speaker 2: You know, are you, you want to see the most
- 17:37Speaker 2: number of carries anyone's ever going to get? It's Derek Henry.
- 17:42Speaker 2: when he was at Alabama. And in high school. Yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 2: And in the pros for a couple of years. Somebody
- 17:50Speaker 2: figured out it was a good idea to give him
- 17:51Speaker 2: the ball and that he wouldn't break down. Yes. I'm
- 17:54Speaker 2: kind of interested to see how Lane does that with
- 17:56Speaker 2: this team because offensively, his valley wick, his side of
- 17:59Speaker 2: the ball. Right now, there's not one guy. It's Sam Levitt, allegedly.
- 18:05Speaker 2: But Levitt's had injury problems. He had a big foot
- 18:07Speaker 2: injury that kept him out at Arizona State. And you
- 18:10Speaker 2: don't really want your quarterbacks who is very brave, like
- 18:15Speaker 2: they mentioned on the broadcast. They're like, yeah, his whole
- 18:17Speaker 2: family plays defense and he's the quarterback. And that usually
- 18:20Speaker 2: means that he's got something to prove. Yes. Having something
- 18:23Speaker 2: to prove when you're the guy everybody wants to kill
- 18:25Speaker 2: is not great on a football field. It can make
- 18:28Speaker 2: for missing games due to injury. Yes. So who is
- 18:32Speaker 2: that guy for LSU? That's going to be very difficult.
- 18:36Speaker 2: It was Kiwan Lacey last year at Ole Miss. I mean,
- 18:40Speaker 2: I know Trinidad Chambliss was, everything to that team. But
- 18:43Speaker 2: the bedrock of that was a run game built around Lacey.
- 18:46Speaker 2: I don't know who that's going to be for LSU.
- 18:48Speaker 2: I mean, it might be Dylan Jones. There's signs of that.
- 18:50Speaker 2: He had 23 carries for over a hundred yards. They
- 18:54Speaker 2: might try to build the whole thing over him with
- 18:56Speaker 2: that offensive line. That's not the worst idea. Their big
- 19:00Speaker 2: challenge is going to be this. Their big challenge is
- 19:02Speaker 2: going to be diversifying a little bit. Cause I know
- 19:04Speaker 2: what Lane wants to do because it works right. Like that's,
- 19:07Speaker 2: he's going to do what works, but what works here is,
- 19:10Speaker 2: Might be diversifying a bit just to keep the pressure
- 19:13Speaker 2: off Levitt because, because that's, that would be a big
- 19:17Speaker 2: loss if they lost him because he opens up so
- 19:19Speaker 2: much of what they do. Yeah.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Like I want to leave some meat on the bone
- 19:23Speaker 1: for the fact that they got the Ole Miss game
- 19:25Speaker 1: at about 10 days and then they get Texas A &
- 19:28Speaker 1: M after that. Like they are. They are the thing
- 19:30Speaker 1: to talk about and lucky for us in between that,
- 19:34Speaker 1: Ohio State is coming to Austin. Arch gets his chance
- 19:38Speaker 1: to get a little get back. And this is interesting
- 19:42Speaker 1: to me because the last time they did a home
- 19:44Speaker 1: and home like this, the first is in 2005, 2006.
- 19:46Speaker 1: 2005 was Vince Young, letting everybody know it's about to
- 19:52Speaker 1: be like that this year that was a that was
- 19:53Speaker 1: a matchup between two guys Vince Young over here and
- 19:56Speaker 1: AJ Hawk over here it was an amazing game the
- 19:59Speaker 1: next year Texas it was one versus two but Texas
- 20:03Speaker 1: didn't have the same caliber level of team Ohio State
- 20:06Speaker 1: which was great that year until they played Florida um
- 20:10Speaker 1: came and they put a pretty good thumping on them
- 20:12Speaker 1: in Austin. The score didn't reflect it, but there was
- 20:14Speaker 1: never a chance that they were in it. Last year,
- 20:17Speaker 1: Texas goes and plays Ohio State in what I think
- 20:20Speaker 1: was an all-around miserable game to watch. I didn't feel
- 20:24Speaker 1: like anybody came out of that looking too good, but
- 20:26Speaker 1: nobody came out of it looking worse than Arch. because
- 20:28Speaker 1: I feel like it's not Arch's fault. Everybody kept trying
- 20:32Speaker 1: to say how good Arch was, and there was no
- 20:35Speaker 1: evidence of it to that point. And so we basically
- 20:37Speaker 1: hammered Arch because we created a completely fictitious narrative around
- 20:42Speaker 1: the greatness that he supposedly already had, even though he
- 20:45Speaker 1: couldn't beat out Quinn Ewers. It colored the way we
- 20:48Speaker 1: looked at him throughout the season. By the end of
- 20:50Speaker 1: the year, the dude was really, really good. And now
- 20:54Speaker 1: we're going to see exactly how good he was or wasn't.
- 20:56Speaker 1: They're a favorite in this game. They are loaded. Ohio
- 20:59Speaker 1: State's the number one team in America with probably the
- 21:01Speaker 1: best player in America. But I'll say it right now.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Was it saying? Is that how you say it?
- 21:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Let me tell you what nobody's saying about him. Look
- 21:10Speaker 1: at that ball. He throws lollipops. My goodness.
- 21:15Speaker 2: He does. He can throw lollipops because he has Jeremiah
- 21:19Speaker 2: Smith as the fat kid catching him on the other end.
- 21:21Speaker 2: So unfair. It is deeply unfair. But I think there's...
- 21:25Speaker 2: Hold on.
- 21:25Speaker 1: And they got a boy on that team named Legend.
- 21:29Speaker 1: And I looked it up. That appears to be his
- 21:31Speaker 1: actual name.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Right?
- 21:33Speaker 1: It doesn't appear to be a nickname. His name is Legend.
- 21:36Speaker 1: And I don't know who you are, Mrs. Legend, Miss Legend,
- 21:40Speaker 1: Mama Legend, who you are. But talk about calling your
- 21:44Speaker 1: fucking shot. Because the name that we've seen come up
- 21:47Speaker 1: is Reggie Bush. And I don't think it's Reggie Bush
- 21:50Speaker 1: because Reggie Bush was taller and lankier. Like if this
- 21:53Speaker 1: is this feels a bit more like what if Noel
- 21:55Speaker 1: Devine turned out to be Noel Devine?
- 21:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it was big. Yeah, there's this is terrifying because
- 22:03Speaker 2: this is terrifying facing Ohio State because what you don't
- 22:07Speaker 2: want is you don't want this to turn into a
- 22:10Speaker 2: game where suddenly I have to cover two guys. That's it.
- 22:14Speaker 2: And unfortunately, I think you might have to try to
- 22:16Speaker 2: cover two guys. So the only way, football's real simple,
- 22:20Speaker 2: to win this is to attack the distribution system. That's it.
- 22:24Speaker 2: The distribution system in this case is Julian Sand. So
- 22:28Speaker 2: I've seen this before. We're early season. It's going to
- 22:31Speaker 2: be very, very hot. We have an anticipated matchup between
- 22:36Speaker 2: two quarterbacks. Bo, this usually means that we get a
- 22:39Speaker 2: defensive struggle with a lot of turnovers. That's usually whatever
- 22:42Speaker 2: they think the game is going to be. it ends
- 22:44Speaker 2: up being something entirely different. And I think that's probably,
- 22:47Speaker 2: that's probably what we'll get. There's no way arch won't be,
- 22:50Speaker 2: won't be pushing here. There's no way he won't be
- 22:53Speaker 2: stretching too far because I would, what you're at home.
- 22:57Speaker 2: These are the guys that you played first. Yeah. Yeah. That's,
- 23:00Speaker 2: there's no way that, that somebody, there's no way psychologically
- 23:04Speaker 2: that you won't play with a little bit of pressure.
- 23:05Speaker 2: That first half is going to be super tight. That
- 23:08Speaker 2: to me, getting some turnovers, I think defensively, we're kind
- 23:12Speaker 2: of sleeping on both teams and, we shouldn't because they're
- 23:15Speaker 2: incredible on that side of the.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Ball as well all right so if we get into
- 23:19Speaker 1: a little bit of university of texas football okay you
- 23:24Speaker 1: give texas that guy at quarterback what guy that guy
- 23:30Speaker 1: historically and to be fair this is probably not terribly
- 23:33Speaker 1: dissimilar than any other school this is just how college
- 23:37Speaker 1: football works but the results are kind of yeah right
- 23:41Speaker 1: Take it back to shame or ends. For example, I
- 23:43Speaker 1: didn't really shake out, shake about to Chris Sims. Um,
- 23:46Speaker 1: I think Chris Sims was done in by the coaching
- 23:49Speaker 1: staff that he had, but in the end, yeah.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Right.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Didn't really go great. Vince young. It was until it
- 23:58Speaker 1: wasn't right. Like we had a good, solid, almost two
- 24:02Speaker 1: years of, Ooh, I don't know about this one. And
- 24:04Speaker 1: then suddenly it turned into a thing. Um, There's something
- 24:08Speaker 1: to be said about whether Arch in the end turns
- 24:11Speaker 1: out to be more of a Chris Sims type of
- 24:14Speaker 1: figure at Texas. But the real one is, is Sark
- 24:18Speaker 1: Mac Brown all over again?
- 24:21Speaker 2: Yeah, he might just be glossy Mac Brown, fancy Mac Brown,
- 24:26Speaker 2: like the like Crate and Barrel version of Mac Brown
- 24:29Speaker 2: as opposed to the Sam's Club version.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I mean, hold on, back to having the level of
- 24:34Speaker 1: talent that Mac was able to get for the first
- 24:36Speaker 1: 10 years, basically, of that tenure, and also with that, wow,
- 24:40Speaker 1: you never won a conference sort of thing that keeps
- 24:43Speaker 1: popping up.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Not, like, the trophy room there is bare. I don't
- 24:49Speaker 2: think that this is going to work out quite the
- 24:52Speaker 2: way people think it will. And I just think that
- 24:55Speaker 2: it's because Sarkeesian doesn't do the easy thing. He could
- 25:02Speaker 2: use actually a little more Mack Brown, I think, in
- 25:05Speaker 2: terms of when you get in these games, just do
- 25:07Speaker 2: the easy thing. Just run the ball and get out
- 25:10Speaker 2: of there. Run the ball, play defense, and get out
- 25:12Speaker 2: of there. I will firmly old man this. Sometimes you
- 25:16Speaker 2: watch Sarkeesian and you go, it didn't have to be
- 25:18Speaker 2: that hard. Get dumber. You're very smart. Sometimes you have
- 25:23Speaker 2: to do that with people. Not just coaches, but you
- 25:26Speaker 2: have to go, hey man, you're real smart. That's cool.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Why don't you go do the thing that works? Right.
- 25:31Speaker 2: And why don't you protect your quarter, your young quarterback who,
- 25:34Speaker 2: by the way, like arches arches, like as far as
- 25:38Speaker 2: overall professional development, obviously he's in college. He's still young.
- 25:42Speaker 2: The number of games he started is still relatively low. Right.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Like this is just do the thing that's going to work.
- 25:50Speaker 2: And with Ohio state, by the way, I know that
- 25:52Speaker 2: they could put up some offensive fireworks. Don't you want
- 25:55Speaker 2: to keep Jeremiah Smith off the field? Don't you want
- 25:58Speaker 2: to keep all of those blue chippers off the field?
- 26:01Speaker 2: Don't you want to test Ohio State's gangster a little
- 26:04Speaker 2: in that heat and crank it? Like, seriously, grind it out?
- 26:08Speaker 2: That would be, to me, the ideal game plan is
- 26:12Speaker 2: to make them survive that environment at DKR. And by
- 26:17Speaker 2: the way, if you keep them under that kind of pressure,
- 26:19Speaker 2: that crowd might stay in it.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Yeah. And they require you hold their attention.
- 26:24Speaker 2: They... That's not a self-starting crowd. It's not. No, that's
- 26:31Speaker 2: not a– listen, that is not a quick-fire barbecue grill there, okay?
- 26:35Speaker 2: You need to bring some lighter fluid, maybe more lighter fluid.
- 26:38Speaker 2: It's a place that can be really good. I've heard
- 26:40Speaker 2: it really loud, but it's also a place where they
- 26:44Speaker 2: will find other entertainments.
- 26:45Speaker 1: It often provides them. that is a list to come
- 26:48Speaker 1: up with is like great programs with not quite intimidating crowds.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Like I went to, I went to the big house
- 26:54Speaker 1: for Michigan, Michigan state one year. And I was like, wow,
- 26:56Speaker 1: I really thought it would be a little louder in
- 26:58Speaker 1: this place. Now, part of that, I think is architecture,
- 27:01Speaker 1: but it was still like, man, yeah, this isn't really
- 27:03Speaker 1: as cracking as one would think.
- 27:05Speaker 2: It is not. And part of that is architecture. Cause
- 27:08Speaker 2: it shaped like a walk. Yes. You know, it like,
- 27:10Speaker 2: it kind of lets the sound go out. It's not
- 27:12Speaker 2: like death Valley where it's built. but the sides nearly
- 27:17Speaker 2: vertical so that it just, the sound just vibrates. Kyle
- 27:19Speaker 2: feels the same way. It's like loud as hell in there. Um,
- 27:23Speaker 2: I would put it this way. Your crowd needs to
- 27:25Speaker 2: be irrational. They need to be a little insensible. You
- 27:31Speaker 2: need to be people who are unreasonable, who, if you're
- 27:33Speaker 2: down 20, you're still there, right? Take notes. I know
- 27:36Speaker 2: that the attendance was bad because it was 120 degrees
- 27:39Speaker 2: on the field. South Carolina is to me, the example
- 27:42Speaker 2: of the rider dies because it's, they'll go 0-11 and
- 27:45Speaker 2: sell out. I've seen that. That, to me, you need
- 27:50Speaker 2: a crowd that doesn't... You need a crowd that, honestly,
- 27:53Speaker 2: is probably in a bad relationship with the team. Well,
- 27:58Speaker 2: they never give me anything, but I just keep showing up.
- 28:01Speaker 2: That's the best kind of crowd. Texas requires some give
- 28:05Speaker 2: and take. You have to give them something good. And
- 28:07Speaker 2: they will stay in the game. I'm not going to
- 28:09Speaker 2: speak ill, too ill, of the DKR crowd in general. Also,
- 28:13Speaker 2: it won't matter because I really do think Texas could
- 28:17Speaker 2: just boil them out of this game.
- 28:19Speaker 1: They should be excellent this year.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Should be.
- 28:22Speaker 1: It will be interesting to see why they are not.
- 28:27Speaker 1: And that heat is already on Sark, man. Like he
- 28:29Speaker 1: does not. He does. He is not a man built
- 28:33Speaker 1: for the jobs that he has been able to get.
- 28:36Speaker 2: It's I kind of like this does feel he feels
- 28:40Speaker 2: a little Mac of it. I mean, hold on.
- 28:43Speaker 1: First of all, by the way, let's talk about a guy,
- 28:44Speaker 1: and we don't talk about him in this context, a
- 28:46Speaker 1: guy who's had nothing but not good jobs, but great jobs.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Great jobs.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Washington, USC, and Texas?
- 28:53Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, and got an NFL coordinator. Listen, and
- 28:57Speaker 2: even his coordinator spots, right? Coordinator at USC, coordinator for
- 29:01Speaker 2: the Falcons. That's an NFL gig, right? That's a good job.
- 29:04Speaker 2: I know it's the Falcons. That's still a good job
- 29:06Speaker 2: on your resume. Yeah. And his comeback job was he
- 29:10Speaker 2: was coordinator for Alabama. Yes. In a playoff, under circumstances
- 29:14Speaker 2: which are funny because it involved firing Lane Kiffin.
- 29:17Speaker 1: The week before the championship game. Got to get this
- 29:20Speaker 1: guy out of.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Here, man. You want to know what watching film does?
- 29:24Speaker 2: Nick watched that film, and according to the excerpt in
- 29:26Speaker 2: Vanity Fair from an upcoming book about Lane Kiffin, Nick said,
- 29:30Speaker 2: his words, not mine, after watching plays get called that
- 29:34Speaker 2: they hadn't practiced or that they weren't ready for, weren't
- 29:37Speaker 2: part of the script, watching him kind of wail it
- 29:40Speaker 2: was the implication. Nick said, and I quote, the next
- 29:44Speaker 2: morning after he watched film, he slept on it, he
- 29:46Speaker 2: woke up, and he said, I'm going to fire that cocksucker.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Do you want to know? That's the quote. Do you
- 29:54Speaker 2: want to know, by the way, how mad you have
- 29:58Speaker 2: to be at somebody? to go to sleep and you
- 30:01Speaker 2: wake up and you call someone and go, yeah, first
- 30:04Speaker 2: thing this morning, I'm firing that guy. Nick took a nap,
- 30:08Speaker 2: woke up and said, nope, nope, still got to do
- 30:11Speaker 2: it in a playoff.
- 30:13Speaker 1: That is your immediate, in a playoff. Where the only
- 30:18Speaker 1: guy you're promoting, as I recall, isn't even actually an
- 30:21Speaker 1: assistant here. Because he was like an analyst. He was
- 30:25Speaker 1: on the, like the, all I'm saying is, in line
- 30:28Speaker 1: with our previous thing, Lane just doesn't know when the
- 30:34Speaker 1: shit ain't funny no more. Yeah. And that's all it
- 30:38Speaker 1: came down to.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Doesn't know when it's not funny. Never under, how do
- 30:42Speaker 2: you not understand? This is the other thing too. He's
- 30:44Speaker 2: generally portrayed as not understanding the assignment in Tuscaloosa of
- 30:48Speaker 2: how to be on that staff, which is to say, yes, sir.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Jump when told jump. That's everything. Lane never got that.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Just couldn't have. Like the dog who does not understand orders.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Just never understood how to look at the number of
- 31:04Speaker 2: people who've been coaches under him. And there are some
- 31:06Speaker 2: people who are very unsaving, like in their overall demeanor
- 31:09Speaker 2: dress and out and like, like way of doing things.
- 31:12Speaker 2: There's people who've made it work. Lane Kiffin was like
- 31:14Speaker 2: the dog. You could not train.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Run the ball lane.
- 31:17Speaker 2: We're just run, run the ball, run the ball.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Run the ball lane.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Then again, maybe, listen, then again, maybe we're underestimating him
- 31:26Speaker 2: in that respect because you know what they did against Clemson?
- 31:28Speaker 2: They ran the ball. Is there.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Coming up next, it might be some trouble up there
- 31:33Speaker 1: in Michigan. And also, I believe we'll find some time
- 31:35Speaker 1: to talk about Dolly Parton with Spencer. All right, we
- 31:42Speaker 1: are back with Spencer Hall. I mentioned the Michigan thing first,
- 31:45Speaker 1: but it's a little boring. Mm-hmm. You and Dolly, I
- 31:50Speaker 1: was on the other side of the world when Dolly died.
- 31:52Speaker 1: You were the one person I needed to make sure
- 31:53Speaker 1: I was doing okay.
- 31:55Speaker 2: I appreciate that. Yeah, so that lady, if you want
- 32:00Speaker 2: to know what she embodied meant was to a lot
- 32:06Speaker 2: of different people, you have to know that she is
- 32:11Speaker 2: the only person I know who my mom asked me about, like, hey,
- 32:17Speaker 2: are you okay? My mom called me to be like, okay,
- 32:21Speaker 2: are you okay? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm totally good. I
- 32:25Speaker 2: don't know anybody else who was capable of doing all
- 32:28Speaker 2: of that all at once. Like you have to understand
- 32:32Speaker 2: her Wikipedia. When you read it, it says she signed
- 32:35Speaker 2: a deal to be a songwriter in house in Nashville
- 32:38Speaker 2: when she was like 16. The next sentence is two
- 32:41Speaker 2: years later, she became the first person in her family
- 32:44Speaker 2: to graduate high school in that order. That's crazy. She
- 32:49Speaker 2: was a chart-topping songwriter before she was a hit singer.
- 32:53Speaker 2: She was the sidekick in a TV star before she
- 32:56Speaker 2: really became a solo artist. My grandfather, devout Dolly Parton fan,
- 33:03Speaker 2: he watched the Porter Wagner show, where she was the
- 33:05Speaker 2: sidekick for seven years. She watched that, not... boom and
- 33:09Speaker 2: say man you watch a lot of the porter wagner
- 33:11Speaker 2: show not much of porter wagner didn't pay attention to
- 33:15Speaker 2: a single word coming out of that jughead's mouth watching
- 33:20Speaker 2: for dolly and maybe not necessarily for all the right
- 33:25Speaker 2: reasons but i.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Mean i don't think those are the wrong ones i
- 33:29Speaker 1: don't wrong is.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Not the word and she knew that that was part
- 33:32Speaker 2: of the packaging she understood that And I love that
- 33:36Speaker 2: she had a shorthand. Like, I think good entertainers have
- 33:39Speaker 2: a shorthand. They walk up and they have a shortcut
- 33:42Speaker 2: to being the thing they want to be when getting
- 33:44Speaker 2: around that, right? Because you're always trying to get around something, somebody.
- 33:47Speaker 2: You're trying to say, okay, there's an obstacle between me
- 33:49Speaker 2: and you and the thing I want to do artistically.
- 33:52Speaker 2: And Dolly Parton would walk up and she would be
- 33:54Speaker 2: dressed garishly, right? She would be, you know, big wigs, right? Like,
- 33:59Speaker 2: outrageous physique, right? Not hidden in any way. In fact,
- 34:03Speaker 2: dressed to accentuate at every time. And then she would
- 34:06Speaker 2: get up and in 30 seconds, she would realize, oh,
- 34:09Speaker 2: I have been fooled. I have been, I watched her
- 34:13Speaker 2: at the Hollywood Bowl and the woman's rapport with an
- 34:16Speaker 2: audience was on a level that I don't think most
- 34:19Speaker 2: people can understand. She spent most of a two hour show.
- 34:23Speaker 2: I would say 45 minutes of it, maybe an hour
- 34:26Speaker 2: was singing and the rest of it was telling stories
- 34:28Speaker 2: and talking. The Hollywood Bowl is filled with, you know,
- 34:30Speaker 2: 18,000 to 20,000. of the most polished, cynical LA people
- 34:35Speaker 2: you've ever seen in your life who all get tickets
- 34:37Speaker 2: to sit down and be very sincere little people with
- 34:40Speaker 2: their hands like this, literally, like in their hands, listening
- 34:43Speaker 2: to this woman hold them in the palm of her hand.
- 34:48Speaker 2: That was the kind of command that she had over people.
- 34:52Speaker 2: And she never abused that. Like when you take that
- 34:56Speaker 2: and you decide that the best thing that you can
- 34:57Speaker 2: do with your life is to start a theme park
- 34:59Speaker 2: where you can bring your dog Don't know if people
- 35:01Speaker 2: know that about Dollywood, but you can bring your dog
- 35:04Speaker 2: and also to send books to kids. It's pretty simple
- 35:08Speaker 2: because her dad could never read. Right. He was illiterate.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Something that you and I have talked about this in
- 35:15Speaker 1: a different context, but something that she figured out, not
- 35:17Speaker 1: just as a performer, but I feel like she figured
- 35:19Speaker 1: out just overall, like. I had a run a couple
- 35:22Speaker 1: years ago where I really went deep into and through
- 35:26Speaker 1: the Aretha Franklin catalog, which is a rollercoaster.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Ride in terms of quality, right?
- 35:32Speaker 1: Where it's excellent, it's excellent. And where it's not, hey, boy,
- 35:36Speaker 1: she was singing really loud. And I bring that up
- 35:39Speaker 1: because at Aretha Franklin's best on record, and you hear
- 35:44Speaker 1: it with the Curtis Mayfield stuff, it really kind of
- 35:46Speaker 1: depends on who the producer is, is when she brings
- 35:51Speaker 1: you close to her, right? Like when she's really into
- 35:55Speaker 1: a song, she can take that song and bring you
- 35:58Speaker 1: to it. But there are other times in certain emotional
- 36:01Speaker 1: registers where rather than bring you close to hear her,
- 36:05Speaker 1: she goes scream that shit to you all the way
- 36:08Speaker 1: in the back, right? And that's where it gets to
- 36:10Speaker 1: be like, oh man, we need to modulate this a
- 36:13Speaker 1: little bit. But she can't, like I read something once
- 36:16Speaker 1: that said the job of the singer is to bridge
- 36:18Speaker 1: the gap between the songwriter and the song, right? And
- 36:23Speaker 1: Aretha's breast, that's where she gets it. Sometimes there's this
- 36:26Speaker 1: huge chasm between these things and she screams to get
- 36:29Speaker 1: the point. Dolly Parton had figured out how to bring
- 36:32Speaker 1: everybody close to her at every turn. Like you watch
- 36:35Speaker 1: those clips of her on all those talk shows, her
- 36:38Speaker 1: voice never raises, it's always real quiet. She makes you
- 36:41Speaker 1: lean in and hear exactly what it is that she's
- 36:44Speaker 1: talking about. You listen to the songwriting, it's always these
- 36:47Speaker 1: structures and these narratives and these stories. that make you
- 36:50Speaker 1: sit there and listen for every adjective and every little
- 36:53Speaker 1: bit of construction that makes it happen, but it never
- 36:55Speaker 1: screams at you. It always just kind of brings you,
- 36:59Speaker 1: pulls you, just pulls you close so that she can
- 37:02Speaker 1: lushly and thoroughly tell you the story without having to
- 37:06Speaker 1: turn the amp up too high.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Yeah, like Aretha could hit it on Call Me because
- 37:10Speaker 2: I can hear that. Yes, you hear it.
- 37:12Speaker 1: It's right here.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Call Me's the one that grabs, like Call Me's the
- 37:15Speaker 2: one that hooks me because you can tell she's talking
- 37:17Speaker 2: to someone. Yes. Right. Like I, I, I need you
- 37:21Speaker 2: when you get there. Yes.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Um, that is rare with her with Dolly. It's every,
- 37:27Speaker 2: it's pretty much every song. Like sometimes she's doing a standard, right.
- 37:30Speaker 2: But even with a, even with the standard, she could
- 37:32Speaker 2: sort of bring people in with the song that everyone
- 37:36Speaker 2: knows from her, from Whitney, um, with, I will always
- 37:39Speaker 2: love you. The first it's broken. Like it starts so small, right.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Whitney's version is big, right. No slander to that whatsoever.
- 37:50Speaker 2: It is done in a very Whitney way. With Dolly,
- 37:53Speaker 2: the original version, it's starting at like a one, maybe
- 37:58Speaker 2: a two. But what it's saying is cold as hell
- 38:01Speaker 2: in a lot of ways, right? But she's like, I'm
- 38:04Speaker 2: not staying. Like from the first line, you get the sense,
- 38:06Speaker 2: like if I should stay and you hear it and go,
- 38:09Speaker 2: that's not happening. No, she's gone. She's gone. How do
- 38:12Speaker 2: you do that? Like she was so good at putting
- 38:14Speaker 2: her foot in two places at once and making it
- 38:16Speaker 2: seem like it was completely different. cohesive and coherent. Yeah.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Like, yeah, I'll be, I'm, I'm out of here, but
- 38:23Speaker 1: I will think about you.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I will. This, this, this, and like, if I will
- 38:28Speaker 2: always love you and, um, you were always on my
- 38:30Speaker 2: mind too. Great. Uh, one genuinely a self-assertion song, like
- 38:36Speaker 2: an empowerment song, right. Of saying, Hey, that was wonderful.
- 38:40Speaker 2: It's done. Uh, and then I will, and then, um,
- 38:43Speaker 2: you were always on my mind, uh, which Willie Nelson covered.
- 38:46Speaker 2: is the ultimate scumbag song. Like, that's such a dirtbag song, right? Like, hey,
- 38:51Speaker 2: maybe I didn't do all of the things that you
- 38:53Speaker 2: should do when loving someone, but I was thinking about you. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Counterpoint.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Right?
- 38:59Speaker 1: Like, I know what you're thinking. It's not that I
- 39:01Speaker 1: don't love you.
- 39:06Speaker 2: But the practice of loving you is problematic for me.
- 39:09Speaker 1: Yeah, like, I mean, don't get me wrong. I understand
- 39:12Speaker 1: why you might think that. But you don't know how
- 39:14Speaker 1: I feel. Yeah.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Also, I found your number again, and I'm interested in
- 39:19Speaker 2: giving it another shot, okay? Because I think you're still
- 39:24Speaker 2: about it. Yeah. um the dolly has a song um
- 39:28Speaker 2: which is which is a like an amazing song called
- 39:31Speaker 2: joshua and it's about falling in love with like the
- 39:34Speaker 2: meanest man in town and it's a crazy ass song
- 39:37Speaker 2: like lady comes up to the scariest man in town
- 39:39Speaker 2: who lives on the edge of town and she's like
- 39:41Speaker 2: i ain't afraid of you and then they they fall
- 39:43Speaker 2: in love and they have a great time um it's
- 39:45Speaker 2: insane but when you're listening to it you're like oh
- 39:47Speaker 2: yeah we've all been there you haven't been there but
- 39:50Speaker 2: Dolly could make you believe it. She could take a
- 39:52Speaker 2: scenario like that and go, yeah, totally believable.
- 39:55Speaker 1: I am so consistently impressed. It amazes your ability to
- 39:57Speaker 1: actually like hear all the songs and get what they're about.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Cause I think most people just kind of hum along.
- 40:02Speaker 2: You get, I can't, I can't do that. I always
- 40:04Speaker 2: have to, I always have to like hone in. Like my,
- 40:07Speaker 2: my kid's really into, um, my, my younger son is
- 40:10Speaker 2: really into a semi-charmed, uh, life by, uh, by blind.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Oh, third eye blind.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Um, A song that a 13-year-old, I've let him
- 40:20Speaker 2: listen to it, even though it has lyrics about sex
- 40:22Speaker 2: and crystal meth. It's about that time. Yeah, it is
- 40:26Speaker 2: about that time. And you should know what those things
- 40:29Speaker 2: are and what not to do. And when listening to it, though,
- 40:34Speaker 2: I can tell his head is just doing, right? He's
- 40:37Speaker 2: just hearing that. That's all he's hearing, right? And in
- 40:40Speaker 2: my head, I'm like, wow, this is definitely about a
- 40:43Speaker 2: really bad time in this person's life, right? From the first...
- 40:46Speaker 2: From the first time, they're like, oh, man, that song's
- 40:47Speaker 2: so catchy. And I was like, that's what you're hearing? Yes.
- 40:50Speaker 2: That is not what I am hearing, Dad. Not at all.
- 40:52Speaker 1: That's nothing quite like when you get old enough to realize,
- 40:55Speaker 1: wait a minute, that was actually sad. Case in point,
- 40:57Speaker 1: outcast ATLians from start to finish. Yo, these are two
- 41:03Speaker 1: unhappy guys.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Outcast in general, right? Like Miss Jackson, everyone loves to
- 41:10Speaker 2: sing the chorus, right?
- 41:11Speaker 1: Yes.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Listen to the verses. I like that song. As a
- 41:16Speaker 2: side note, that song has one of my favorite big
- 41:19Speaker 2: boy moments because big boy sounds more personally affronted by
- 41:22Speaker 2: the situation, which is in fact in real life Andre
- 41:25Speaker 2: 3000's situation. Yes. Big boy sounds more angry, hurt.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Hurt?
- 41:31Speaker 2: Like genuinely in his soul hurt?
- 41:33Speaker 1: Look at the way I treat her. Look at the
- 41:35Speaker 1: way she treats me.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Yeah. You go get the hell on. That's the part
- 41:42Speaker 2: where I'm like, oh.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Damn, that is a performance.
- 41:46Speaker 2: You and your mama.
- 41:47Speaker 1: And it entered in a 10-year period where the most
- 41:50Speaker 1: consistent theme in big boys music is baby mama drama.
- 41:56Speaker 2: The rooster. I think some of that was personal. Yeah,
- 42:03Speaker 2: picking the kids up. think that was a very real
- 42:05Speaker 2: thing for.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Him my daughter don't won't be up at the pta
- 42:08Speaker 1: meetings and then my son he can't talk but when
- 42:11Speaker 1: i see him he's peeing i think he's pissed he's
- 42:15Speaker 1: like everybody's.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Mad at me yeah uh there is that is an
- 42:20Speaker 2: example of someone who i think we we will never
- 42:24Speaker 2: give enough i don't think we ever give enough credit
- 42:26Speaker 2: to big i did like as a rapper as a
- 42:28Speaker 2: writer as as someone who could conceive something even on
- 42:32Speaker 2: behalf of someone it's like he's It's like he's Andre
- 42:35Speaker 2: 3000's attorney in that case, right? Like my client, you
- 42:39Speaker 2: have been so rude to my client, Ms. Jackson. Like
- 42:42Speaker 2: that is him. And I think that's a rare, rare talent.
- 42:47Speaker 2: I got one more Dolly story for you.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Go for it.
- 42:49Speaker 2: One more. And it's this, that apparently a reader of
- 42:55Speaker 2: ours was like, hey man, I got a Dolly story
- 42:57Speaker 2: for you just in case everyone thinks she wasn't absolutely
- 42:59Speaker 2: about her business. She had this thing where she was,
- 43:02Speaker 2: this guy, had a relative who worked for her and
- 43:06Speaker 2: he was on a call or he was privy to
- 43:09Speaker 2: a call that dolly was having with the manager which
- 43:12Speaker 2: i imagined this at the time was probably on one
- 43:14Speaker 2: of those gigantic white speaker phones right like gigantic white
- 43:16Speaker 2: speaker phone that they had in every important 80s or
- 43:19Speaker 2: 90s drama right like let's talk to the ceo of
- 43:21Speaker 2: big business quack and they would be you know coming
- 43:23Speaker 2: out of the speaker and the manager is going up
- 43:26Speaker 2: and down with dolly just saying like I can't believe
- 43:29Speaker 2: that you're going to do this, and I can't believe
- 43:31Speaker 2: that you're going to. These people fucked us over before. Like,
- 43:33Speaker 2: it is a very explicit, nasty conversation about business. And
- 43:38Speaker 2: she goes, I can't believe you're going to do this.
- 43:39Speaker 2: This is the dumbest fucking thing you've ever done, Dolly.
- 43:40Speaker 2: I can't believe you're going to trust these people again.
- 43:43Speaker 2: Dolly hears this all out very calmly for like five minutes,
- 43:47Speaker 2: which is, if I was watching, that's how I would know.
- 43:50Speaker 2: From being from East Tennessee, something real nasty was going
- 43:52Speaker 2: to come. Something nasty and definitive was going to come
- 43:54Speaker 2: out the other end. And she waits and she hears
- 43:57Speaker 2: him and she goes, OK, I hear I hear all that. OK,
- 43:59Speaker 2: I hear that. But you need to remember, I signed
- 44:02Speaker 2: the checks around here. We're going to do whatever the
- 44:04Speaker 2: fuck I want. That's what we're doing. And the guy goes, OK.
- 44:09Speaker 2: And she goes, OK, hey, listen, you tell you know,
- 44:11Speaker 2: you tell Claire and them that I hope they're well.
- 44:13Speaker 2: I hope your mom is good. And we'll see you
- 44:15Speaker 2: at Thanksgiving. All right.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Bye.
- 44:18Speaker 2: Don't ever let an accent or country nice pull you
- 44:21Speaker 2: into thinking that person is not ready to cut nuts.
- 44:24Speaker 2: They will.
- 44:25Speaker 1: I do think that what is very clear about her
- 44:29Speaker 1: is that realization of, well, you know, actually, I do
- 44:31Speaker 1: make the decisions around here.
- 44:34Speaker 2: And would wield it like a sword. Yeah. And sometimes
- 44:38Speaker 2: in ways. So she did a thing with Porter Wagner,
- 44:40Speaker 2: who she wrote, I will always love you for. Porter
- 44:43Speaker 2: Wagner was in bad health, his career taking a downturn.
- 44:46Speaker 2: And at every point, by the way, at one point,
- 44:48Speaker 2: Porter Wagner sued her for $ 3 million when she did
- 44:50Speaker 2: not have $ 3 million to give. early in her solo career,
- 44:54Speaker 2: relatively early in her solo career. Later on, when Porter
- 44:58Speaker 2: Wagner was in bad shape, hence his kid's future was
- 45:01Speaker 2: in bad shape, she bought Porter Wagner's rights for his songs,
- 45:06Speaker 2: for like, I think, a hundred of his songs, bought
- 45:09Speaker 2: them so he would be liquid, have some cash, get
- 45:12Speaker 2: his affairs in order at the end of his life,
- 45:14Speaker 2: and then sold them back to him, and hence his children,
- 45:17Speaker 2: for like a dollar. Right. Right. And did that because...
- 45:22Speaker 2: I think that's, again, she's in two places at once.
- 45:24Speaker 2: That is a very charitable thing to do. Also look
- 45:28Speaker 2: who made it.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Yep.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Yep.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Yep. Yep.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Yep. I did. Yeah.
- 45:31Speaker 1: I did that for you.
- 45:32Speaker 2: I did that for you.
- 45:33Speaker 1: Like I'll never forget once that I was talking to
- 45:36Speaker 1: my guy, a couple of guys that I used to
- 45:37Speaker 1: work with and they had an idea for something. And
- 45:40Speaker 1: then I was like, Oh, I've got an idea to
- 45:41Speaker 1: go with your idea. And I kind of housed their idea. Right.
- 45:45Speaker 1: I didn't house it, but I was, and I told them,
- 45:47Speaker 1: I was like, well, look, I was thinking about these
- 45:49Speaker 1: changes or whatever, but, um, you know, I don't want
- 45:51Speaker 1: to take your stuff. So I need to, you know,
- 45:53Speaker 1: run this by you, you know, and I'll never forget.
- 45:56Speaker 1: This is one of the greatest moments of my life empowering.
- 45:58Speaker 1: And I love these guys for this. They looked at
- 46:00Speaker 1: each other and they kind of chuckled and they looked
- 46:02Speaker 1: at me and they were like, Hey, we're going to
- 46:07Speaker 1: do whatever you do. I was like, Oh, that's how
- 46:11Speaker 1: it works. Got it. They didn't have to do that.
- 46:13Speaker 1: I wasn't asking them to do that, but the bottom
- 46:15Speaker 1: line was they were like, hey, hey, hey, I don't
- 46:16Speaker 1: think you get it. This goes where it goes with you.
- 46:20Speaker 1: We're going to do whatever you want. And Dolly Parton clearly,
- 46:23Speaker 1: when you read that story, had the moment where she
- 46:26Speaker 1: was like, oh, okay, so this is what it is. Okay,
- 46:29Speaker 1: got it. Not even like some shit that needed to
- 46:31Speaker 1: be flexed. Just say, this is just how it's going
- 46:34Speaker 1: to go.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Flexes take a lot of different forms, and sometimes they're
- 46:37Speaker 2: charitable ones, and my favorite is the little moment of
- 46:40Speaker 2: attention that she gave. the three six mafia when they
- 46:44Speaker 2: managed to beat out her uh she was nominated for
- 46:47Speaker 2: the uh best song oscar at the same time they
- 46:49Speaker 2: were and when they won she sent them a letter
- 46:52Speaker 2: that was like you know hey listen i'm just glad
- 46:54Speaker 2: someone from tennessee won and i'm not real familiar with
- 46:56Speaker 2: your work but you know we're kinfolk hey good job
- 47:00Speaker 2: that i love i loved it by the way imagine
- 47:02Speaker 2: juicy jay after three days of partying right yes coming
- 47:05Speaker 2: back to the hotel room eyes blurry no idea where
- 47:08Speaker 2: he is picks up the like letter and looks at
- 47:10Speaker 2: it's like did dolly parton write me a letter.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Yo that whole everything doesn't seem real like when you
- 47:18Speaker 1: watch the video of all of it and all the
- 47:21Speaker 1: way to john stewart being like i think those are
- 47:23Speaker 1: the guys that actually have the right idea of what
- 47:25Speaker 1: this is supposed to be like they are like crazy
- 47:28Speaker 1: underdressed for being there and it's like 2004 2005 So
- 47:34Speaker 1: it's that era of hip-hop fashion. That song isn't even
- 47:37Speaker 1: that great, but they won an Oscar, and nobody's ever
- 47:41Speaker 1: been happier about anything than Project Pat, Juicy J, and
- 47:47Speaker 1: DJ Paul on stage shouting people out completely unselfconscious about
- 47:55Speaker 1: the whole situation. To the point where everybody who lost
- 47:59Speaker 1: saw it and was just kind of like, No, you
- 48:01Speaker 1: know what? I would have enjoyed that nearly as much.
- 48:04Speaker 2: Yeah, let him take it. Also, get out of their
- 48:07Speaker 2: way for the next 48 hours.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Yes, and none of us knew at the time, even
- 48:12Speaker 1: those of us who were familiar with them, that they
- 48:14Speaker 1: would then prove to be maybe the most influential figures
- 48:19Speaker 1: in the next 20 years of popular music. Like their
- 48:23Speaker 1: music became the bedrock of like 20 years of what
- 48:26Speaker 1: was on the radio. I, that moment, that moment to
- 48:31Speaker 1: me is we do get, sometimes get good things.
- 48:35Speaker 2: We sometimes get good things. Right. And then at the,
- 48:39Speaker 2: and then at the end of all of that, just,
- 48:40Speaker 2: you know, Dolly being both gracious enough and also sort of,
- 48:43Speaker 2: you know, realizing she's big enough to be like, if
- 48:45Speaker 2: I send a thank you letter, it's going to be
- 48:47Speaker 2: a big deal for them. Yep. Yep. I'm good. I'm
- 48:49Speaker 2: going to do that.
- 48:49Speaker 1: And look, she knew funny when she saw it. That
- 48:53Speaker 1: moment was hilarious.
- 48:54Speaker 2: Yeah. hey listen and a real one too because uh
- 49:01Speaker 2: talking about her her husband uh who they had this
- 49:05Speaker 2: very unusual relationship over the better part of you know
- 49:08Speaker 2: 50 60 years however long they were married which was
- 49:10Speaker 2: a real long time um saying to a live audience
- 49:15Speaker 2: going huh you listen that man when he's standing at
