- 1:24of the be Cool podcast, my name is Rex 45 tonight.
- 1:29We have Sergio with this. It's going on man, I'm good man,
- 1:35thanks for coming on the show, much appreciative, you know,
- 1:40let's try. This is a motorcycle racing
- 1:42podcast and we try to you know, bring information to new writers
- 1:47and even some folks who have been in for a while but we don't
- 1:50claim to can train people how to ride but one of the cool things
- 1:54with you, you actually get to Coach people and and train Folks
- 1:57up. So let's talk a little bit about
- 2:01your motorcycle racing. When did you get into it and
- 2:05what kind of race in you're doing and stuff like that?
- 2:07And then we'll talk about the coaching aspects of it and and
- 2:10training. Yeah, first of all, I started
- 2:20riding motorcycles when I was 11.
- 2:22Wow, in Italy. Because I live In there and
- 2:28obviously I didn't know much about racing.
- 2:30I watched racing because in Italy they used to give Racing
- 2:36moto GP and everything on regular TV.
- 2:39Yeah yeah. So I said watching I always told
- 2:44myself I wanted to do that one day, but I didn't think I was
- 2:48going to do it anyway. So when I moved to the United
- 2:53States, I bought a motorcycle Goal, first thing I did borrow
- 2:57more psycho. Then I bought a car and I had a
- 3:01friend that said that I asked him to.
- 3:03Hey, What Can I Do Track? Huh.
- 3:07There's a track in Loudon. You should go try it.
- 3:10So I was a friend. Yeah, he's still my friend now
- 3:15it's still closed. Yeah, and yeah, I said, I should
- 3:20go to loud and there's a, I'm always been a Ducati guy, so, Is
- 3:25that this is the kind of event. You should go check it out and I
- 3:29did I sign up. Mmm, shut up.
- 3:31It was 2007, the first track day that I did and I was with
- 3:39penguin racing school. Yeah, so I got in there.
- 3:43Remember is everything? You know?
- 3:46It is. Everything's new.
- 3:48Yeah, I went by myself. Yep.
- 3:55And I started doing track days and thanks to penguin racing
- 4:01school and the irony is that I became a penguin racing.
- 4:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:06Let's go coach. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:07So so now did you do like you know years of track days because
- 4:12when I like I tell folks I went to technically like Jim
- 4:16correcting me cuz I did the penguin school but then I
- 4:19started racing. So in theory, I did one track
- 4:22day but I just went straight into full-blown.
- 4:25On race and and, and that's kind of where, you know, I've gone
- 4:28back to getting like a 390 KTM and all this, just to kind of
- 4:31fix the things that I learned the wrong way because I didn't
- 4:34do track days, like most folks. So, how many years of track
- 4:38writing did you do before you started racing?
- 4:40Yeah, it was 6 years. I track days.
- 4:44Wow, okay. Sadness or 2013, was the first
- 4:48year that I started racing. I did a bunch of track days but
- 4:53all over North Yep. Green jersey.
- 4:56You know? And I liked it but I got to a
- 5:01point that was boring, right? Because you can't pass anybody.
- 5:06There's no rewards, not trophy, wise more like personal reward,
- 5:10right? You just ride it around and I
- 5:14remember talking to penguin races School coaches and they
- 5:18said yeah you should do it just erasing and 2013.
- 5:23I started. So this is my Year.
- 5:25Wow, same here, I started in 2013 to on the SV, only did a
- 5:30couple of rounds like in June and July and that was it.
- 5:34But like 2015, I was like every round and and so, but you had
- 5:38all that six years of experience in doing track day.
- 5:41So your first race weekend, I guess you can kind of not
- 5:47worried about the writing aspect where somebody like myself who
- 5:50is trying to still figure out right?
- 5:51And because I was worried, I started riding in 2012 and
- 5:53started racing in 2013. I mean, I did like 11,000 miles
- 5:57on my bike, so I did put a lot of miles in one year, but still
- 6:00it like my first lap around. I was kind of like what the hell
- 6:04is going on, you know what I'm saying?
- 6:06So, you know, how was it like your first time going out and
- 6:11erasing, I showed up on two different motorcycles, so I show
- 6:16up on a multi-part. Wow, the CRF 450?
- 6:19Uh-huh. Clapped-out dirt bike.
- 6:23With street tires, basically. Lee and 1991.
- 6:29Ducati Supersport 750. Oh wow.
- 6:33Okay. No idea.
- 6:37You could even race boat and he showed up and everything was
- 6:44new. I picked myself outside the
- 6:48garage is there infield? Yeah, myself Don't know what to
- 6:53do. I just pay attention to the
- 6:55announcements and jumped on, but I did good.
- 6:59Like you said the writing aspect to me.
- 7:02I already I already know how to write, not that.
- 7:04I was a professional, but I know I would ride right and
- 7:09comfortable changing gears on the under speed, right?
- 7:19As me and one other guy that we went back For like first second
- 7:24first. I'm so cool.
- 7:26And that got me going. Gotcha.
- 7:29I was, you know, cuz you going. You going back to personal
- 7:33rewards? I didn't race for the trophy.
- 7:35It's office was great, right? Race.
- 7:38Like I want to get better. Yeah, yep.
- 7:40That's what I did. So I like that I got hooked, you
- 7:43know, we do at this point is once you start again, but it's,
- 7:48yeah, it's it is, it's beyond its, it's like A way of life.
- 7:54So in and so in I assume you must have moved up to a mature
- 7:59after. So, you know for those that
- 8:01don't know at New Hampshire Speedway, the Neymar Ciro's rll
- 8:05rll RS series. You start out as a novice where
- 8:09a lot of other series you start out as an amateur and then come
- 8:12move to an expert. It's just the more technical
- 8:15track and it's just safer. Yeah.
- 8:18So now did you jump up right away to a mature and And I
- 8:22waited, okay, you know, because I wanted to make sure that was
- 8:27me. I know it was offer mmm because
- 8:32I wanted to make sure that I knew.
- 8:33I knew I knew. I did not know how to ride like
- 8:36those guys in the expert. Yep.
- 8:39Does it go one and two? Take it easy and get better
- 8:45before I moved in and the year after happened, I moved by, I
- 8:49had happened that in the middle of the season.
- 8:52I say, you know what? Let's because, you know, it is
- 8:56Loudon. When you start as a novice.
- 8:58You get to a point that you you absorb so much knowledge that
- 9:02you realize I'm going too fast for these guys.
- 9:06I need to go where faster, right?
- 9:09Yeah, when you're going up. Gone up there to 324 you look
- 9:14over and you see that trailer truck between you and the next
- 9:17person. Yeah, it's time to bump.
- 9:19So I realized it and I say, all right I'm gonna move up and it
- 9:23was a great move, you know. I'm happy that I did that and I
- 9:29stay in the amateur for like a year or so before about.you is
- 9:33still riding both bikes. Yeah yeah I did the first five
- 9:37six years bride in the more tired and the light.
- 9:41Lightweight now, GP chiffon on the super sport or regular
- 9:47shift. So I had to carry out his GP.
- 9:53So that was like, I remember the last year that I decided as I
- 9:58can. No, I'm not gonna do this
- 9:59anymore. Yeah, it was mostly because I
- 10:02used to go out And think that I'm on a motor impairment have
- 10:06350 pounds bike, instead of a 200 pounds by and turn one.
- 10:12You push it. Try to hit the one board on a
- 10:16more tired but you can't do that on a Surface 17 this board.
- 10:19So it was it was a decision that I made and what I did is I
- 10:25stopped doing Mozart. I'm sorry I stopped doing
- 10:29Supersport Loudon and I focus on water.
- 10:34I took super sport during the winter down in South.
- 10:37Got you like a raise two ccs, right?
- 10:40And and so for me, I think 2221 is my first year, right race in
- 10:44two separate bikes, the same year, and I had the same issue,
- 10:48you know, raising the KTM, I can go and go into a break later.
- 10:51Go into a corner later and on our six, yeah, it took me at
- 10:58least a half a lap to like alright different bike,
- 11:00different breaking Walkers and and sort it out.
- 11:04Now 2022, like we have talking off camera.
- 11:07I'm probably only going to ride the KTM and maybe do certain
- 11:10things with the R6 because it you know in races when you're
- 11:13doing the wrong thing you know? It's a difference between a few
- 11:17places. Yeah, you did this.
- 11:21Hi this. See this year, I decided to do
- 11:23the opposite. You're going back.
- 11:25Yeah, give up more tired. Yeah.
- 11:27Racing at Loudon and I picked up a 848 evil, which is a
- 11:31middleweight. So, I'm going to bump into
- 11:34Middleweight and try to that Adventure.
- 11:37That okay took me 10 years to a middle eight, right?
- 11:50And I know it's going to get more childish.
- 11:53Yeah I think you kind of I think you'd need it to you do need it
- 11:56because like I like my job, I probably should have started out
- 11:59on a ninja 400 or 300 instead of even the SV and then I went up,
- 12:03you know, 3 Years in, I went up to the the R6 and I've been
- 12:08riding. I was riding twins, you know,
- 12:09from 2012 up until 2016. So it took me a whole season,
- 12:14just to, you know, hit the rev limiter, consistently with on
- 12:17the R6, just getting used to, you know, 15,000 RPMs, instead
- 12:20of you know, 10,000 11,000 RPMs on the twins.
- 12:27Always recommend you start with a small bike.
- 12:30You know what Shirley The law of the streets.
- 12:35Does not allow you right everybody in the streets once I
- 12:37have 1000 so yeah. Just go buy a thousand, maybe
- 12:41600 I go. I'm faster on a lightweight
- 12:46bike, right? Didn't your 1000 correct?
- 12:49Yeah, and so let's let's talk about your shirt, your teaching
- 12:54and a penguin because I think I was I did a penguin class.
- 12:58I don't maybe it was 2016 or 15, but You know it is you know guys
- 13:04you know middle-aged come out on 1002 taking a class in turn one
- 13:09you know they break your collarbone and and so you know
- 13:11so let's talk about like when you got into racing and maybe
- 13:14some of the things you see that that people shouldn't do and
- 13:17then you know, things that people should do while you know
- 13:20starting out. Yeah.
- 13:22I mean you said it first thing is to realize that 1000cc on a
- 13:301.6 mile track. With 12 turns, a one straight
- 13:37away might be too much but obviously you can force people
- 13:42to buy lightweight for you know, the beginning.
- 13:47But our our idea, penguin racing school is to have, have you come
- 13:53over look at the track experience the way that you ride
- 13:57a track and then hopefully you Turn around and buy a race bike.
- 14:04Ride it. Yeah.
- 14:05Shut up on the street bike, I show up on that.
- 14:08It was an IP Motorhead 1100 are cool.
- 14:13I think it was too much for me, that bike is so much.
- 14:17And then the next weekend, I went and bought the 750 by was a
- 14:22track bike, okay. You know, I knew I was, I didn't
- 14:25have to worry about like crash in there.
- 14:27So that's really what I would suggest if you, No, you maybe,
- 14:32you want to try first and then you into it, just go look for
- 14:36track bike. This tons of track bikes there.
- 14:39There have to be super, super bikes.
- 14:45Because spent 3 Grand 2800, my first bike was twenty hundred
- 14:47bucks and just need a tire warmers.
- 15:03So you want to go there with your thousand perfectly fine.
- 15:11There's nothing wrong. But you did to learn your body
- 15:15position you learn how to look forward, you know, looking back
- 15:20at cars, you know, looking around you looking forward, any
- 15:24writing on correct body position.
- 15:29And and learn how to break properly.
- 15:32Look at it, move on your motorcycle properly.
- 15:36And when I tell every student that I have, I said, listen,
- 15:40whatever you learn today. Go back out there in the street
- 15:44and apply it, do not stop riding the way that we teach you here.
- 15:50You know, the body position applies in the street fighting,
- 15:54you're not leaning. I dragging your knees on the
- 15:56street by, you still needed that time.
- 15:58Upper body position to relax and have the motorcycle under
- 16:03control, right. Right, what not to do.
- 16:08I will say, it's mostly think that, you know how to ride fast
- 16:14on a track. That's repeated.
- 16:18That is number one. Definitely we think, hey man,
- 16:22I'm the king of the streets. And I show up on a track like I
- 16:26said turn one. Yeah, she can control the bike.
- 16:35Going down to 30 miles an hour. Yeah, don't do that in the
- 16:40streets. Nobody Does it not for long
- 16:43periods of time? It's mostly straight up, right?
- 16:47You know riding there's not enough turns, you know, I
- 16:50remember like when I used to do track these and I go back in the
- 16:53streets, I want. Go in and out from the highway.
- 16:59Mmm, entrance to practice the practice seconds.
- 17:04Yes, guilty guilty. Yes, I saw this, I still ride
- 17:09streets. It's not his coming as before,
- 17:12right? Yep.
- 17:13Same here because I have a street bike, why not?
- 17:17But I don't ride the same way that I heard him on the track it
- 17:19will be crazy but yeah what not to do is think I'm the King of
- 17:25the streets show up. And, you know, the day, it's a
- 17:28progressive day. You start learning about a
- 17:32position, actually, you started learning how to get into the
- 17:35track. Yeah, yes.
- 17:38Go to right, way the right way, right directions.
- 17:41And then, you know, they learn how to ride the track, you learn
- 17:45where the turns are and then you get comfortable with your bike
- 17:49on that particular surface, right?
- 17:52And, and then you'll learn body position.
- 17:55How do I look up and know some people already are skilled.
- 17:58They come in. I have seen guys like oh wow,
- 18:01you write pretty good, you know, there's always people natural at
- 18:05it. Yeah, actually, yeah.
- 18:06Well they may have done previous track these in a different
- 18:10track. Yep.
- 18:11So you know the rules apply but most of the time is gone be ego
- 18:18to one of the jump in front of everybody.
- 18:21After the second session when we tell you, okay, Three laps you
- 18:26follow us and then go and that's what bad things bad.
- 18:33You know, bad things happened and and but I luckily you know,
- 18:39doing the school events. We never had Billy issues.
- 18:42Everybody date the eagle to not to listen to you.
- 18:48Never had people ignoring us, you know, they obviously I
- 18:51consider myself an expert on that.
- 18:54So when Newbies come in. They know what this guy knows
- 18:58what he's talking, right? Yeah, better listen.
- 19:00Yeah, we have well, we have guys and girls.
- 19:05That's the beauty of the sport. I love that a lot of women
- 19:08coming over. They ride in the past, I love
- 19:11it. Yeah, the the sport is so
- 19:16Diversified, you know, you got kids?
- 19:19Yes, you can be 1213 start on a track and then girls and boys.
- 19:25Sighs man and women. It's finds I love it any.
- 19:29Anybody can go racing go race and ride.
- 19:35So but I will I will say that. That was the only bad thing.
- 19:41Other stuff is have your bike sound safe and sound or it
- 19:48mechanically sound? Yeah, most important go through
- 19:51your bikes. Yeah, a lot of people really
- 19:55Tire pressure all the time. Well, I noticed, yeah, I'd
- 20:00friends at the first. It's like, hey man.
- 20:02Did you check your tire pressure?
- 20:04What you go look at. It's 18, PSI supposed to be 43,
- 20:09right? Yeah.
- 20:10Not good. That was good.
- 20:15They tell you. It feels like hard and it's
- 20:20amazing just getting your tire pressure, right?
- 20:23It changes how your bike ride and, and If you're a newbie
- 20:26first I didn't like car tire pressures.
- 20:28I rarely check. I mean, what is it with a set?
- 20:31Maybe next summer? I'll check it again.
- 20:32Or forms weapon switch switch into tires.
- 20:34If I'm doing winter and summer type of thing, but the first
- 20:38first year, I didn't check my tire pressure after I had to
- 20:40bike and the bike was running weird.
- 20:43Another thing is I didn't get the bike setup for my weight.
- 20:46Didn't you know? And you know so I was wondering
- 20:49why the bike was hitting corners and just running wide on the
- 20:51streets and stuff like that. I got the bike setup tire.
- 20:54Pressure is It and all of a sudden, the bike is moving like
- 20:57a supposed to so, and this tire pressure, ya know, basic.
- 21:02Basic maintenance, you know, Libya chain and chink Doyle
- 21:06change on your engine. You can do your own oil change.
- 21:10You save money because I've seen a lot of things go wrong right
- 21:17from Tech. Got you got you penguin school,
- 21:21we checked the bikes before we allow him to go on the track.
- 21:25During the day, a lot of times you have leaked on fork seal.
- 21:30Yep. Yeah, leaks.
- 21:31On a bike on a soil filter or you got a chain that is roster
- 21:35and tight or you know, both. So those are things that
- 21:41important so I was I will suggest you know check your bike
- 21:45up and you're tired thread. Don't people do a lot of
- 21:49burnouts on the street, you don't want to go to the track
- 21:53missing work, you need You need your tires to grip, they do
- 21:58definitely. And, you know, let's talk about
- 22:00penguin school a little bit because iíve to my knowledge is
- 22:03one of the oldest schools for teaching motorcycle racing.
- 22:06And, you know, if you up in the Northeast, it's the Friday
- 22:10before every round, essentially it's a really good school.
- 22:16I mean, you know, the top writers and modem trt kathi hog
- 22:20Hobbs. He came out of the school, you
- 22:22got other Riders, been glad he came out of school.
- 22:25So, it is a, it's an amazing program and very affordable,
- 22:30right? I don't want to call out any of
- 22:32the other schools out there, but there's some schools out there
- 22:35that you, look at the price difference and then you look at
- 22:40writers that at making it a motor America, it is it more
- 22:44about the instructors and what they give or, you know, you guys
- 22:48are just giving a really good big discount at all the prices
- 22:54and stuff are all. On the website, everything is
- 22:58out there and tracking motorcycle is expensive.
- 23:04But like you said, Couple hundred dollars to go on track
- 23:08is not that much. No, I will say penguin has been
- 23:14great to me since day one when I show up and then you know I
- 23:18remember like being like listening to do instructors
- 23:21talking to me and I'm thinking I'm in one day want to be one of
- 23:26them. Nice.
- 23:28I like to teach. Yeah I like I'm that guy that
- 23:32will even at work. I like I'm the one who
- 23:34volunteers to To teach and somehow good Mentor.
- 23:40I think got you management. So I like that penguin the way
- 23:47they structure is pretty simple. I mean, it has to be both ways.
- 23:54I think Teague ban all these guys.
- 23:56They came to from penguin to Modern America.
- 24:01They listen, they're not kids at their into this board, so they
- 24:06live It's important that you listen and you do what the
- 24:09teachers are the coaches. I telling you Talent, 100%, that
- 24:15is something that you need and these kids feel less.
- 24:19Yeah, I like it. I met.
- 24:22I met the both when they were little and all these kids that
- 24:26came out of there. They are sponges absorb nice.
- 24:29Nice. Hey you have to listen to what
- 24:32the coaches said. Apply.
- 24:35But really didn't amount of knowledge that not only me as a
- 24:42coach like even the class coaches because they have
- 24:45individual, they have their own, you know, beginners and
- 24:50intermediate rack the coaches. They know a lot, right?
- 24:54They experienced AMA Superbike right, right?
- 24:58It's a lot of tracks so they know what the bike will do if
- 25:03you're in certain situations. And I will say, if you are a
- 25:09newbie to show up ask questions, ask a lot of questions might be
- 25:14a stupid question, but it could be that question, that triggers
- 25:18your brain to be like, oh, okay, putting it all together and
- 25:23apart of it together. I'm doing all this and I'm still
- 25:27learning doesn't matter. Like you still wanted to go fast
- 25:30on the bikes on the I learned like just teeny tiny move on
- 25:34your bike. Because your hand is like this
- 25:37instead of this. Yeah, the throttle that makes a
- 25:40huge difference. And when they remember when I
- 25:43was told in the beginning, like, okay.
- 25:46And I tried and it clicked. Yep.
- 25:48Right there. I was at all and now I can ride
- 25:52without my having my arms, like and it the right way, the right
- 25:56way. Yeah, even in the street, again,
- 25:59we go back when I told my students go back in the street,
- 26:02right? The same way that I told you.
- 26:03That's how you going to practice.
- 26:05Okay. And get better because you know
- 26:06one thing with the Northeast it's harder to ride in the
- 26:09winter, you know. So let's talk about like
- 26:12offseason training and and what does that look like?
- 26:16What does that look like for you and what do you suggest a new
- 26:18Riders getting into getting into sport?
- 26:21I know I we talked about like ice racing with you or ride in
- 26:24which you've done so talk a little bit about that.
- 26:26And, you know, do you know, do you play other sports or
- 26:29recommend folks? You gotta stay active.
- 26:31You gotta do something. So, awful.
- 26:35Reason I ride the bike. Mainly I do lot of dirt bike.
- 26:39Riding weather is Woods or Motocross.
- 26:43All right, the bike I do some gym exercise.
- 26:48I'm not really big got to go to going to the gym every day to
- 26:53get fit, right, right? You prefer just the right,
- 26:55right? Yeah.
- 26:56Which is those do squads and everything you do everything on
- 27:01a motorcycle, especially on the dirt bike is gonna need the full
- 27:04body. Mmm.
- 27:06So I'm a big writer, you know. Obviously you need to do a lot
- 27:09of cardio so I may be bicycle. It could be just simple as
- 27:14riding your bicycle around the area.
- 27:18I know in the city it's hotter, maybe.
- 27:21But I live West from here so it's a lot of space.
- 27:25Nice. Yeah.
- 27:25Off-road bicycle. That's fine.
- 27:30Ice racing is one thing that I do during the winter.
- 27:33Obviously, we need to have Ice. So the temperature needs to
- 27:37cooperate with us, right? The whether that's a great way
- 27:42to learn how to handle the bike and sliding situations, which
- 27:50mostly happens when you write in a wet, right?
- 27:54But even in the dry at, I will lose some of the terms.
- 27:58You lose a tire and if it does step out a little bit, you
- 28:02already prepared, you know what the reaction is?
- 28:05Of that bike. So you stay in control.
- 28:10So, again, it's not only, the riding is just the type of
- 28:14writing that you do. So, if you do dirt bike, Lou,
- 28:18learn how to stay up. You're standing up a lot, right?
- 28:24You're not using the legs a lot. That's what we're racing using
- 28:30our legs to control the bike. And Do that a lot.
- 28:37Stay active diet, relatively. Okay, I will suggest, but I'm a
- 28:44guy that likes to eat pretty much everything, but there's
- 28:46certain things that I stay away from Allah, I don't starve
- 28:53myself to death, got you but you know, I don't want to eat fried
- 28:59stuff very day, I guess. Yeah, I think it does help once
- 29:03you've been doing it for a little while.
- 29:05Cuz now you know what it takes for your body to kind of get
- 29:08through whatever season, you're trying to get through.
- 29:10Because I remember I think 2015 like I was pulling out of races
- 29:13because I wasn't fit and and that was the after that season
- 29:17was like, okay I need to train like I'm running a marathon or
- 29:20something and once you get once you can get your body to a
- 29:23certain point. Obviously once you start racing
- 29:25that kind of deplete because you don't have the same time off as
- 29:29if the offseason, so, you know, so for long for people who have
- 29:33been riding for a little bit longer, it's easier to get
- 29:35Regimen. But you do need some type of
- 29:36regiment. Absolutely.
- 29:38I've gone to a supermarket by walking just because, you know
- 29:43me. It's just a, just, an exercise
- 29:45in two miles. All right, let's walk man.
- 29:48It might sound stupid. But like, instead of using a car
- 29:52and get some motion, some kind of exercise in you and stay fit.
- 29:58You, you mention of all, if you do any other sport I used to
- 30:01play soccer a lot. Okay.
- 30:03Yeah. And But I think I got more hurt
- 30:08playing soccer than motorcycle racing, so I kind of stopped.
- 30:12Yeah, that was a great. Great witness would probably
- 30:14stay in shape. Yeah, she's running all the time
- 30:17using my cardio is like the best.
- 30:19Yeah, I used to play basketball, too, and I had to put a like, I
- 30:22think it's 2017, not every time, I'm like, I'm gonna hurt myself
- 30:26doing this, and I can't go racing.
- 30:28And, and so, I stopped II cycle a lot and then just do do
- 30:33workouts and stuff like that. Um, I don't get to ride as much
- 30:37as I like in the winter but hopefully, that'll change next
- 30:39year. The last thing I do is
- 30:41snowboarding. Okay, great.
- 30:44Great legs. Yep.
- 30:46Workout little bit of everything but mostly your legs.
- 30:50So but again, don't go too fast because you can get really hurt
- 30:54and snowboarding. Look at you catchy.
- 30:57That's true. I always, I'm always cautious
- 31:01but I think I'm snowboarding fight.
- 31:04Can I do this jump? Stay away from that.
- 31:06Yeah, it's gonna you thinking I had this.
- 31:10Like, if you get hurt, you gotta be kind of smart.
- 31:14I love it. Yeah, you know, this year,
- 31:17whether up here has been little bit, not so wintry, but we had
- 31:23enough snow that I know, but every two weeks, I'll go
- 31:27snowboard every week. Depends, got you now.
- 31:31And now a new ride is any goals. They What kind of goals should
- 31:36New Riders set for themselves as they say?
- 31:39Okay, I did one season I did to season, this is something I want
- 31:42to do, what kind of goals would you recommend to set when they
- 31:46start to get out whether at that point if they still novice or an
- 31:49amateur goals racing wise? You always I set goals not only
- 31:58on the lap time, right? We go.
- 32:02You know, if you did it that's a minute 40, the first Time, you
- 32:05want to do it, 38, you know, but the goals are asked to be like
- 32:13body position. Hmm.
- 32:18Maybe goals, also on, I'm going to commit to do certain track
- 32:23days or certain events that will help me improve because
- 32:28motorcycle racing or writing if you're not riding, you know,
- 32:33practice it right? You need seat.
- 32:35Time. And so the goal should be to
- 32:38ride. Now, it should be a first goal,
- 32:41I want to do, so check the schedule.
- 32:43So whether it's you know, any tracks, you know, try to write
- 32:48as much as possible and apply those rules to the street as
- 32:52well. If you keep writing as well, say
- 32:54Goals will be how many times you gotta write this here and a
- 32:59specific thing that you working on.
- 33:02So I remember when I started, I wanted to learn by body position
- 33:06so good bad because go to bed, what happens because It's I
- 33:13think that's the fundamental. You can ride a motorcycle unless
- 33:16you sitting on the proper way. Correct.
- 33:19I agree. And I knew it's easy to do this
- 33:23on a straightaway, but it's hard to do this on a turn, if you're
- 33:26not properly sitting on a bike. So I will set goals like body
- 33:31position. Or when I learned that practice
- 33:34practice, practice, that's huge, and other goals.
- 33:40I mean, if Yuan I usually raised against me all the time.
- 33:47Okay. I want to beat me dad.
- 33:51You 10 minutes ago? Yeah.
- 33:54Because you go to a track and I'll always look at the previous
- 33:58races. What did I do for time?
- 34:00Right? Shave.
- 34:02Even half second tent of us and we're, you know what?
- 34:06I did great that's to me and then if the podium comes, it
- 34:10comes by itself because Was you why didn't you doing everything
- 34:15everything? Right, right.
- 34:17That's what I will say nice, nice.
- 34:19Now, I didn't, I didn't. So one of the things I want to
- 34:22talk about which all are how size.
- 34:24The first time I saw this was with you, I think it's down and
- 34:27CMP it to me. It's like I never quit attitude
- 34:32because I think you either back-to-back races and those are
- 34:35a red flag. Neither you exhaustive kind of
- 34:37come apart or your shift. They had broken and your sweat
- 34:40and gear on and your and you're doing everything to get the bike
- 34:44to get back out and race and me out of my bike in the trailer
- 34:49and drove back to Boston. I like how does that?
- 34:52And I feel like I developed a little bit after seeing that and
- 34:54seeing other people that do it because at times you're not just
- 34:57fighting yourself trying to be the better.
- 34:59You, your fight in whatever situation and not letting that
- 35:03like mess up your mood if up your mood, right?
- 35:06Absolutely. So, going back when I started, I
- 35:11did have That attitude that it's broken.
- 35:16That say I'm done. Yeah, and I developed that by
- 35:21looking at others but also myself, I kept saying why give
- 35:24up the first thing is it don't give up.
- 35:28You've seen, if you go on YouTube, you watch every race.
- 35:31This race is when the guy on the first turn goes down his last.
- 35:36He wins that the race? Yes, yes.
- 35:39You never give up, and we know this in life, that's how we
- 35:44should think. So, I have the same mentality.
- 35:46Positive mentality, never give up and try your best to do it,
- 35:52right? And no matter how uncomfortable
- 35:54you are, because you are sweating bricks.
- 35:57I was in a suit, on a 180 degrees.
- 36:00Yeah. And and I had a back-to-back
- 36:03race in my shift. Lever fell like, broke in half.
- 36:07So, I was scrambling looking for the ship.
- 36:09Clever. And then finally install it man.
- 36:13I remember making it right at the last call and showed up and
- 36:21my have got Podium because that weekend I had quite a few
- 36:24Podium. Yeah.
- 36:25So I remember was first second and third but I had a and to me
- 36:30that goes back. What I said you race against
- 36:32yourself? Yeah, no doubt it.
- 36:34Like, oh my God, I did everything that I could, I never
- 36:38give up in this. Is why even if I would have
- 36:41finished 10th, I'll be like finish that.
- 36:43Yeah, because if you don't show up, you would have finished
- 36:46last. And I'll say that in Daytona.
- 36:50I was sick as a dog and I wasn't going to raise and I went out
- 36:53and say let me just see what happens and I finished second in
- 36:56the race and, and I'm just, and it was, I was debating.
- 36:59Not even racing because how bad I felt.
- 37:01So you just learn that. And now, it seems like I'm going
- 37:04out any condition I'm going out. It is, you know, if you can get
- 37:07the bike back on now, like I'm changing radio.
- 37:09A tourism doing things that once upon a time, I'll just put the
- 37:12bike back in the trailer and call it.
- 37:15Absolutely, I have that mentality and do not give up.
- 37:21I tell newbies, I tell other Racers, we help but you know how
- 37:27we are at the track. We all like, friends family
- 37:30Brothers. Yes, altogether.
- 37:33I live. I like that.
- 37:35We help each other. You know, I've seen My
- 37:41situation. I had, you know, crashes that
- 37:48put my bike glitter twisted, and I had to straighten it out in
- 37:52between races, to go to be able to go out there and race and win
- 37:58podiums know. So yeah, never give up.
- 38:02The sport is a mental sport. We know this is like if you're
- 38:08good with your Mind your race better that if you start
- 38:12thinking about a lot of things, oh my God.
- 38:14Something's going to go wrong, right?
- 38:17So it's very mental. I train my brain a lot, I like
- 38:22that. Okay, I like that.
- 38:24That was part of the training, I didn't mention before, but
- 38:27that's, that's, you need to be positive thinking.
- 38:31Positive, there's no negativity. Negativity will hurt you.
- 38:36Yeah. You won't start or plotted a
- 38:38race or because It starts to creep in.
- 38:40Once it starts to Bubble Up pile up pylon.
- 38:43It's like, all right. I'm putting early.
- 38:45Yeah. Like so, yeah, definitely
- 38:48positivity is the way to go. I had just have you for a little
- 38:51bit. I do want to talk about a couple
- 38:53of things. We talk about the classic at the
- 38:55end, but I want to talk about this series that you have, let's
- 38:58tell folks the name of the series, how they can connect
- 39:00with it. Like while you're doing it
- 39:02because it seems like there's a lot of young kids, which it's
- 39:05awesome because it's good for the community.
- 39:08So let's talk about you. Mini series that you have going
- 39:10on. Yeah, so they series is called
- 39:13them racing stands for New England minamoto, it's a series
- 39:19that goes from five classes from kids as young as three years old
- 39:27to adults on full, super motorbike.
- 39:33Wherever doesn't know what Supermoto is.
- 39:35Basically a dirt bike with street tires and we do to Says,
- 39:39we do asphalt only race and we do asphalt and dirt.
- 39:44So you do a crossover from a spot to the dirt section which
- 39:48is mostly like a Motocross jumps.
- 39:51Okay. Tabletops, whoops, sometimes and
- 39:56the Slicks, no heart, no problem on dirt.
- 39:58Yeah, no problem. You have to have a slicks.
- 40:00So I took over about two years ago, this series, I loved it
- 40:04because I was in a serious and also I have kids at a race and
- 40:09they I started three year three and a half years old.
- 40:13They love it too. So I had a chance to take over
- 40:18and I did it's most of the races are located in Maine.
- 40:25Okay, small village called Parson field mean, but every
- 40:31information is on our website www.omf.co.nz emm racing.com
- 40:39Facebook, Instagram. Same name name, name racing, so
- 40:45you can see, even pictures videos.
- 40:49What, what is about? Right?
- 40:51Community family-oriented. Nice mostly my goal is an
- 40:59advocate of the sport and I what I mean is like if I can get kids
- 41:04involved from the young age to motorcycle racing, I know
- 41:09there's a lot. A lot of families that they do
- 41:13Motocross. Yeah, but there's not a lot of
- 41:16Supermoto around in the Supermoto is like a crossover
- 41:19between Motocross and road racing, right?
- 41:23So it so be great for eventually kids that wanted to do road
- 41:28racing and Further forward will be a more America.
- 41:34I know. Hmm.
- 41:36So I decided to take over have kids between the age of 13 and
- 41:4212, okay? And, and they have their own
- 41:46class, obviously, if the meaning Moto a doll, okay?
- 41:54But they have to be at that level skill level, and maybe a
- 41:57Georgia skill level, believe me, this kids that are fast.
- 42:01That's a grown up. You know what their kids that
- 42:04they help each other, okay. So if Mike is they'll help them.
- 42:09Teach him how to get into the track.
- 42:11Get out of the track, do a turn. You know, I've seen that that
- 42:15happened because they're too young to sit on a table, right
- 42:20into an adult. Would say that's true.
- 42:22You need to do this and I still much too much.
- 42:25So I let them ride mostly and no, I don't, I do not charge for
- 42:29kids. Okay.
- 42:30Wow, that's Pretty cool membership fee they would have
- 42:33to pay, but once you enter membership it's 53 dollars for
- 42:40the year. Oh, that's not bad at all.
- 42:42Yeah that's not bad. And and camping is available so
- 42:45it does at a two-day event. It's usually a two day event and
- 42:49you can bring your family, a camper, there's enough space for
- 42:53campers, bring your own generator, okay?
- 42:57And usually we do I said we don't charge kids so the pay or
- 43:05the cost for the race will go from The Young Guns.
- 43:11We use a faster kids on a big bikes.
- 43:13Okay, bikes me 150. Okay, yep.
- 43:17And then there's a mini model for adults and then there's a
- 43:22mature cost for big bikes. Okay, to 50 or 51 super?
- 43:27Super motorbikes? Yeah, and then we have a pro
- 43:29class, which is a tooth 50 light and a 450 or open class open
- 43:35bro. Nice fun.
- 43:38Nothing crazy. As far as like rules or
- 43:41regulations. And what I mean is you know you
- 43:44have to have a name a membership to be able to raise, right our
- 43:49membership and then you pay for the race and then usually get a
- 43:53practice sometimes, I do to practice depending on the time,
- 43:58the practice that heat race and animated.
- 44:00Event. I mean, it takes the whole day.
- 44:03Wow, sounds like quick. Right, right.
- 44:06But I think sold a and you could raise two races to classes for
- 44:12$100, okay.
