Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Voices of Life. And today we explore
- 0:04one of the most debated questions in religious
- 0:06history. How did the Quran emerge? Where did
- 0:11Islam come from? And how does its historical
- 0:15foundation compare with the Bible and the Christian
- 0:18faith that shaped nations long before the rise
- 0:20of Islam? This is a journey into Manuscripts
- 0:25History. and the claims that shape two world
- 0:29religions. To begin this episode today is your
- 0:35host, Pastor David. Welcome to Voices of Life,
- 0:46a ministry of the Church for Life. I'm Pastor
- 0:48David, and today we're asking a question that
- 0:51cuts to the heart of faith itself. Every religion
- 0:55claims divine origin. Every prophet says God
- 0:59spoke. But when we pull back the curtain and
- 1:03look at the historical record, what actually
- 1:06survives the light of day? Today's special compares
- 1:11two Abrahamic faiths, Christianity and Islam.
- 1:17Both claim the same God. Both trace lineage to
- 1:22Abraham. But separated by roughly 600 years,
- 1:26they ask us to make very different historical
- 1:29leaps. Our question isn't which religion is true.
- 1:35That's for you and your conscience to decide.
- 1:37Our question is simpler. When we examine a timeline
- 1:41of evidence, which foundation has stood closer
- 1:44to its source? Let's begin in the beginning.
- 1:503 ,000 years ago, somewhere in the Bronze Age,
- 1:54the story starts. Judaism doesn't emerge from
- 1:58nothing. It builds on earlier civilization, but
- 2:02introduces something revolutionary. One God.
- 2:05Not many gods fighting for power. One creator.
- 2:09Law. Covenant. Archaeological evidence confirms
- 2:16Jewish presence in the land. silver scrolls dated
- 2:21approximately 630 BCE carry the precisely blessing
- 2:26from numbers. Words recited today just as they
- 2:30were written nearly 3 ,000 years ago. The Dead
- 2:34Sea Scrolls preserved in caves from the 3rd century
- 2:37BCE through the 1st century CE contain large
- 2:44portions of the Hebrew Bible. When scholars compare
- 2:48them to later medieval manuscripts, the text
- 2:51remains remarkably consistent. This matters because
- 2:56we have physical artifacts from centuries before
- 3:00Christ. We have continuous tradition passing
- 3:03down the same text. We have multiple independent
- 3:09sources confirming the same narrative. Now fast
- 3:15forward 700 years. A carpenter's son walks the
- 3:19road of Galilee. Jesus of Nazareth doesn't start
- 3:24a new religion. He claims to fulfill the old
- 3:28one. Do not think I've come to abolish the law.
- 3:32He says, I've come to fulfill it. His ministry
- 3:36lasts maybe three years. Then comes to the crucifixion
- 3:41around 30 to 33 CE. And his followers. claim
- 3:47something impossible. He rose from the dead.
- 3:52Here's where the timeline becomes critical. Within
- 3:5825 years of Jesus' death, the Apostle Paul writes
- 4:03his first letters. These aren't stories passed
- 4:07through generations. These aren't legends developing
- 4:10over centuries. Paul's letters, Romans, Corinthians,
- 4:16Galatians were written in the 50s and 60s CE.
- 4:21Some contain even older creedal formulas. Christian
- 4:27had been reciting within 5 to 10 years of the
- 4:30resurrection claim itself. Think about the gap.
- 4:36Jesus dies 30 CE. Paul's letters begin 50 CE.
- 4:41Earliest creeds embedded in those letters possibly
- 4:4535 to 40 CE. That's eyewitness territory. People
- 4:51were still alive who saw the empty tomb, who
- 4:55walked with the risen Jesus, who could say, I
- 4:59touched him. I ate with him. The gospel narrative
- 5:03follow Mark around 70 CE, Matthew and Luke around
- 5:0880 to 90 CE, and John. around 90 to 100 CE, still
- 5:13within living memories of the apostles. And physical
- 5:18evidence, Papyrus P52, a fragment of John's gospel,
- 5:25dates to approximately 125 CE, less than 100
- 5:31years after the original events. In ancient history,
- 5:36that's lightning fast documentation. Most figures
- 5:39from antiquity, don't get contemporary manuscripts.
- 5:44Alexander the Great, earliest surviving manuscripts
- 5:48come from 900 years after he lived. Jesus gets
- 5:54a different standard because his followers claim
- 5:57something extraordinary, and extraordinary claims
- 6:00demand evidence. Now let's look at Islam's emergence.
- 6:05Now jump ahead 600 years. The year is 610 CE.
- 6:10Muhammad, age 40, receives what he says is the
- 6:14first Quranic revelation from the angel Gabriel.
- 6:20This continues over 23 years. Mecca, then Medina,
- 6:25until Muhammad's death in 632 CE. Let me be clear
- 6:29about what historians accept. Muhammad existed.
- 6:33There's absolute historical consensus there.
- 6:35No question. Revelations began around 610 CE.
- 6:41Traditional dating supported by early sources.
- 6:45Quranic manuscripts exist from the 7th century.
- 6:49Birmingham manuscript dated 568 to 645 CE. But
- 6:55here's what manuscripts cannot tell us. 1. Whether
- 7:02Gabriel actually spoke to Muhammad. 2. whether
- 7:08the revelations came from God or created in his
- 7:11human mind. And three, whether Muhammad was a
- 7:17prophet or a political leader. Think about someone
- 7:22named Muhammad today coming up and saying he
- 7:25had a revelation and God spoke to him. You know,
- 7:29today's world, I think we'd have a very different
- 7:31perspective. But, The Birmingham Quran manuscript,
- 7:37yes, it's real. It's radiocarbon dating places
- 7:40back to 568 and 645 CE with 95 .4 probability.
- 7:46That's significant. It means the text existed
- 7:48within Muhammad's lifetime or very shortly thereafter.
- 7:52But manuscripts prove existence, not divine origin.
- 7:56A handwritten letter from Napoleon proves Napoleon
- 8:00wrote it. It does not prove Napoleon's strategic
- 8:03genius. was inspired by heaven the corpus coranicum
- 8:08project at the berlin brandenburg academy explicit
- 8:13studies the quran within late antique religion
- 8:18and literally environment in plain language the
- 8:22quran emerged surrounded by jewish and christian
- 8:25texts ideas and traditions already circulating
- 8:28for centuries Scholars acknowledge substantial
- 8:31overlap. Stories of Abraham, Moses, Noah, and
- 8:35Jesus. Moral teachings resembling biblical ethics.
- 8:39Concepts of judgment. Heaven, hell, familiar
- 8:43to Judeo -Christian audiences. The Metropolitan
- 8:47Museum of Art notes the Quran shares substantial
- 8:51material with Judeo -Christian traditions. This
- 8:55raises an unavoidable question. If Islam is generally
- 8:59completing what came before, why does the completion
- 9:04arrive six centuries later? Christianity begins
- 9:09with a person whose death and alleged resurrection
- 9:12were proclaimed immediately by eyewitnesses.
- 9:15Islam begins with revelations delivered to one
- 9:19man, recorded after his death. standardized under
- 9:24Caliph Uthman around 650 CE, less than 25 years
- 9:28after Muhammad's death, but still, no eyewitnesses
- 9:31claim to supernatural events during Muhammad's
- 9:35lifetime, equivalent to a resurrection in appearances.
- 9:38Muhammad's miracle is the text itself. Its eloquence,
- 9:45its prophecy, claims, its scientific assertions,
- 9:48but text alone cannot verify divine authorship.
- 9:52Millions of literary works claim divine inspiration.
- 9:55None have been empirically confirmed. So we have
- 10:02to think about the evidence gap. Let me pause
- 10:06here and address the obvious objection. Isn't
- 10:09Christianity the same? Can't you prove the resurrection
- 10:14either? Well, it's an excellent question. And
- 10:18here's the difference. Christianity, Islam. Claims
- 10:23focus on historical events. Jesus born, preached,
- 10:27died, resurrection. For Islam, claims focus on
- 10:31textual revelation. Quran delivered, perfect,
- 10:36uncreated. Witnesses available within decades
- 10:41of the event for Jesus. No witnesses to the revelation,
- 10:46only Muhammad's testimony for Islam. For Jesus,
- 10:50non -Christian historians mention Jesus within
- 10:53100 years. These were non -Christians. For Islam,
- 10:58external Muslim, non -Muslim records from 7th
- 11:02century are sparse. It's hardly any. Manuscripts
- 11:07appear within 100 years for Jesus. Manuscripts
- 11:10appear within Muhammad's lifetime, but reveal
- 11:12nothing about authenticity. For Jesus, transformation
- 11:18of disciples documented martyrdom for belief
- 11:22for islam muhammad's transformation documented
- 11:26merchant to leader but motive is debated the
- 11:31christian claim is falsifiable in principle find
- 11:37the body and the claim collapses for investigate
- 11:43eyewitness testimony cross -examine The Islamic
- 11:46claim is unfalsifiable as well. Private revelation,
- 11:51unverifiable. Subjective literary judgment. Neither
- 11:55can be proven in a laboratory, but Christianity
- 11:58at least proposes testable claims about history.
- 12:01Islam proposes faith claims about divine communication.
- 12:05Now, consider the question of credibility standards
- 12:08in a secular society. The U .S. courts evaluate
- 12:13religious groups for tax exemption, legal recognition,
- 12:16and accommodation requests. The standard isn't,
- 12:19is the religion true? It does this group demonstrate
- 12:23sincere belief and doctrinal coherence. When
- 12:29courts deny religious status, it's not theological
- 12:32judgment. It's about commercial fraud. Political
- 12:35organizations disguised as worship or groups
- 12:39lacking sustained community structure. But notice
- 12:43what courts don't do. They don't validate one
- 12:47revelation over another. They can't. The First
- 12:50Amendment prevents government from declaring
- 12:52which faiths speak truth. However, courts can
- 12:57examine whether new religious movements meet
- 12:59minimum thresholds for legal protection. Scientology
- 13:03eventually gained tax -exempt status in the 1990s
- 13:06after decades of litigation. The Church of Jesus
- 13:10Christ of Latter -day Saints faced persecution
- 13:12initially, but earned constitutional recognition
- 13:15over time. Why does this matter for our comparison?
- 13:21Because if someone invented a religion called
- 13:24Galaxians tomorrow with a new holy book, a prophet,
- 13:28a new commandment, ten commandments, or whatever,
- 13:32what would distinguish it from Islam in its earliest
- 13:34days? So think about it this way. If I wrote
- 13:38a holy book today called The Galaxian's Gospel,
- 13:41I dated it 2026, and I distributed copies worldwide,
- 13:47a thousand years from now, archaeologists could
- 13:50carbon date the parchment. Or in this case, maybe
- 13:54electronic record. But they could find my name
- 13:58in copyright records. They could track every
- 14:01digitized backup on servers that survived. They
- 14:04would know exactly when I wrote it. Would that
- 14:08make my revelations from outer space any more
- 14:12credible than Muhammad's from heaven? Would the
- 14:16precision of modern dating make Galaxians divinely
- 14:20inspired? No. Because the question wasn't When
- 14:26the book was written, it was, was the revelation
- 14:30real? That's still unprovable. The only difference
- 14:36is that Islam emerged when verification methods
- 14:38were weaker, and Christianity emerged when eyewitness
- 14:42testimony still mattered. Nothing, absolutely
- 14:46nothing, except time. Islam had the advantage
- 14:50of emerging when Christianity and Judaism already
- 14:54dominated the landscape. It could borrow narratives,
- 14:57adapt terminology, position itself as a corrective
- 15:01fulfillment. A new religion today faces skepticism,
- 15:04precisely because we've seen this movie before.
- 15:08We know how prophets emerge. We know how texts
- 15:12develop. We know how movements gain traction.
- 15:16Islam succeeded, undeniably. million Muslims
- 15:22within 150 years, conquests across three continents,
- 15:27enduring civilization, but success doesn't prove
- 15:31divine origin. Alexander the Great conquered
- 15:35the known world. Did heaven appoint him? Did
- 15:38the Mongols build the largest land empire in
- 15:41the history? Were they instruments of God? History
- 15:46is littered with successful movements. that weren't
- 15:49divinely commissioned so we come down to the
- 15:51credibility question let me now address the core
- 15:55argument directly and i want to be fair to both
- 15:58sides christian apologetics position christianity
- 16:03traces roots to jewish tradition stretching back
- 16:07three millennia the old testament was composed
- 16:12transmitted preserved across centuries the new
- 16:15testament claims were proclaimed within decades
- 16:18of the events. Physical evidence appeared quickly.
- 16:23Eyewitness testimony existed. And transformation
- 16:26of followers was documented. Now let's look at
- 16:30the Islamic position. Islam claims to complete
- 16:34Abrahamic tradition. Not to replace it, but Muhammad
- 16:39is the seal of the prophets. The final... correction
- 16:44after earlier revelations were corrupted. The
- 16:47Quran's preservation is miraculous, unchanged
- 16:51since revelation. Rapid spread demonstrates divine
- 16:55backing. Here's the critical perspective. The
- 16:58chronological gap is real. Judaism precedes Christianity
- 17:02by roughly 1500 to 2000 years. Christianity precedes
- 17:07Islam by 600 years. Each layer adds distance.
- 17:13from the original source. Shared narratives raise
- 17:16questions about influence versus revelations.
- 17:19If the Quran tells stories from Genesis and the
- 17:23Gospels, was this divine continuity or human
- 17:27borrowing? Manuscript evidence exists for all
- 17:31three traditions, but manuscripts prove existence
- 17:34of text, not divine authorship. The real test
- 17:40isn't manuscripts, its claims that exceed historical
- 17:44verification. For Christianity, resurrection,
- 17:47miracles, divine sonship. For Islam, angelic
- 17:52delivery, imitatable text, and scientific foreknowledge.
- 17:58Neither claim can be empirically tested. Both
- 18:01require faith. The bottom line if you demand
- 18:05historical proximity christianity wins six hundred
- 18:09year gap favors the earlier revelation if you
- 18:13accept prophetic authority regardless of timing
- 18:16islam's claims stand on their own merits if you
- 18:21reject supernatural claims entirely both faiths
- 18:25collapse there is no middle ground where one
- 18:28demands empirical proof and the other accepts
- 18:31faith claims Either revelation is possible. So
- 18:36you have to take some time and really look back
- 18:39and find what is faith, what is truth, and what
- 18:47might be fiction. And that's part of the reflection
- 18:50you need to do. So I want to close this podcast
- 18:53today with honesty. I'm not here to convince
- 18:57you Islam is false. I'm not here to prove Christianity
- 19:00is true. Those battles belong in your heart,
- 19:04not my microphone. What I offer is this. Examine
- 19:10the evidence yourself. Read the text, study the
- 19:13timelines, look at what manuscripts actually
- 19:16tell us and what they don't. And then ask yourself,
- 19:21what would count as proof for either claim? Why
- 19:25do I trust one testimony over the other? Does
- 19:29historical proximity... matter to me? Can I believe
- 19:34something I cannot verify? For Christians, the
- 19:38invitation is simple. Trust the witnesses who
- 19:40came before. Their testimony reached you across
- 19:4319 centuries. For Muslims, the invitation differs.
- 19:49Trust the preservation of the Quran, the miracle
- 19:52of its text, and the life of Muhammad as exemplar.
- 19:56For skeptics, the challenge stands. What grounds
- 19:59do we have for believing any religious revelation
- 20:02occurred? Faith isn't blind, but it does require
- 20:07steps beyond pure evidence. Every believer takes
- 20:11that step. The question is which foundation supports
- 20:16it best. Islam's origins lie firmly in the 7th
- 20:22century. No scholar disputes this. Manuscripts
- 20:25from that era exist. Shared heritage with Judaism
- 20:29and Christianity is acknowledged. Christianity's
- 20:34origins lie in the first century, rooted in traditions
- 20:39stretching back a millennia. Manuscripts from
- 20:43that era survive, I would as claims documented
- 20:45early. Which timeline gives you more confidence?
- 20:50That's for you to decide. Thank you for listening
- 20:53to... Voices of Life, a ministry of the Church
- 20:56for Life. Until next time, seek truth with courage,
- 21:00question with humility, and may wisdom guide
- 21:04your journey. I'm Pastor David. Thank you for
- 21:09joining this Voices of Life special. History
- 21:13matters. Evidence matters. And when we examine
- 21:17the origins of the Quran and the rise of Islam,
- 21:21We discover a story shaped not by ancient biblical
- 21:24revelation, but by the religious debates of the
- 21:27seventh century. Christianity stands on the life,
- 21:31death, and resurrection of Jesus, a foundation
- 21:35rooted in history, witnesses, and scripture.
- 21:39May this exploration strengthen your faith, deepen
- 21:42your understanding, and remind you that truth
- 21:46can stand the test of time. Until next time.
- 21:50May God's peace be upon you.
