Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Well, hey, Angel fans, and welcome to Halo Territory. I
- 0:12Speaker 1: am Mike DiGiovanna, former LA Times baseball writer and host
- 0:15Speaker 1: of the show, joined by my regular co-host, Mark Trumbo,
- 0:19Speaker 1: the former Angel slugger and third baseman in Jared Weaver's no-hitter. Mark,
- 0:23Speaker 1: how are we doing today?
- 0:26Speaker 2: I am great. I am excited to hear what you
- 0:31Speaker 2: have come up with for The Halo listeners are into
- 0:36Speaker 2: the latest topics. Some think we are stuck in the
- 0:39Speaker 2: past and some, well, actually just one. But we are
- 0:43Speaker 2: going to try and make things interesting and cover the
- 0:46Speaker 2: game action and also some other things that we find
- 0:50Speaker 2: insightful today. A lot of game action, but some insights
- 0:54Speaker 2: as well.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Good intro, Mark.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Well, we're going to take a little break from all
- 1:00Speaker 1: of the on-field negativity surrounding this team, just at least
- 1:04Speaker 1: for the first segment of the show, to discuss something
- 1:07Speaker 1: that is actually going right for these Halos, Reed Detmers.
- 1:12Speaker 1: The 27-year-old lefty gave up three earned runs in six
- 1:15Speaker 1: innings of Monday night's 6-4 win over the Seattle Mariners,
- 1:19Speaker 1: and he has a Major League Best 1.65 ERA in
- 1:21Speaker 1: 11 starts since the All-Star break. He's got 76 strikeouts
- 1:27Speaker 1: and 11 walks in 65 and a third innings of
- 1:32Speaker 1: that span. He's the first Angels pitcher with seven quality
- 1:36Speaker 1: starts since Garrett Richards in 2014. Mark, what's impressing you
- 1:41Speaker 1: most about this run Rita's on right now?
- 1:45Speaker 2: I think the fact that he has not let up
- 1:49Speaker 2: at all. Continues to go out in the most recent game.
- 1:54Speaker 2: It was a Monday night's game. Not his best. Kyle
- 1:57Speaker 2: Rowley was able to hit the type of home run
- 2:01Speaker 2: that pitchers dread. It wasn't a grand slam, but it
- 2:04Speaker 2: was a three-run home run on a slider, too, which
- 2:07Speaker 2: is interesting. And I'll get to part of, well, one
- 2:11Speaker 2: of the major parts of why Reid has been so
- 2:13Speaker 2: dominant this year is that pitch in particular. But he
- 2:17Speaker 2: is doing a very good job of managing his pitch count,
- 2:20Speaker 2: which I think in the past is something that got
- 2:22Speaker 2: away from him. at times, and he is able to
- 2:26Speaker 2: give them more length, um, into the games. And I
- 2:30Speaker 2: think this is all extremely impressive, uh, considering last year
- 2:33Speaker 2: he was pitching out of the bullpen. And that was
- 2:36Speaker 2: at the time, I think a great move for him,
- 2:38Speaker 2: a move that needed to happen. Um, as a starter,
- 2:41Speaker 2: he was floundering and really not taking that step that everyone,
- 2:46Speaker 2: including himself, uh, we're hoping to see from a guy with,
- 2:50Speaker 2: you know, the type of stuff that, um, okay, I'll
- 2:53Speaker 2: cut to like with his slider. It's the third best
- 2:55Speaker 2: slider in baseball right now. And it's almost second. Dylan sees, uh,
- 3:00Speaker 2: his slider rates as the highest and there's a fairly
- 3:03Speaker 2: wide margin, but we're talking about one of the two
- 3:06Speaker 2: best pitches essentially in baseball, in his slider. And that
- 3:10Speaker 2: does not grow on trees.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:13Speaker 1: We'll get to more, uh, about Reed's, uh, repertoire. Uh,
- 3:18Speaker 1: And it is impressive. On the season, Detmers is 6-8
- 3:21Speaker 1: with a 3.36 ERA and 30 starts. He's got 199 strikeouts,
- 3:27Speaker 1: so past 200 with his next one. 46 walks and
- 3:31Speaker 1: a 1.046 whip in 174 innings. And, man, think about
- 3:37Speaker 1: how much better that record would be if the Angels
- 3:40Speaker 1: had scored more than 13 runs in his 10 previous
- 3:44Speaker 1: starts to Monday.
- 3:45Speaker 3: They lost eight of those games as well.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Reid is tied for ninth in the major leagues in
- 3:50Speaker 1: innings pitched. He's seventh in strikeouts and eighth with a.
- 3:54Speaker 1: 214 batting average against. And as Mark mentioned, what maybe
- 3:59Speaker 1: has impressed me the most about Reid this year is
- 4:03Speaker 1: he made that jump back to the rotation after spending
- 4:07Speaker 1: the entire 25 season as a reliever. And if you
- 4:10Speaker 1: look there, 63 and two-thirds innings in 61 games in 2025.
- 4:16Speaker 1: 174 innings in 30 games this season. Clay Holmes made
- 4:24Speaker 1: a similar transition going from Yankees closer in 2024 to
- 4:28Speaker 1: Mets starting pitcher in 2025. He went 12-8 with a
- 4:30Speaker 1: 3.53 ERA in 33.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Games, 31 starts in 2025.
- 4:32Speaker 1: And he's 6-7 with a 2.85 ERA and 16 starts
- 4:35Speaker 1: for the Mets and Cubs this season. Mark, I know
- 4:36Speaker 1: he didn't pitch in the big leagues, but you've I
- 4:47Speaker 1: think you've played with some pitchers who made similar transition
- 4:52Speaker 1: from the bullpen to the rotation. What does this whole
- 4:57Speaker 1: year say about Reed's off-season preparation and his in-season workouts? Because,
- 5:07Speaker 1: I mean, there has been no diminishing performance, nothing in
- 5:11Speaker 1: his stuff. that leads you to believe he even needed
- 5:15Speaker 1: a break at any time during the season. He hasn't
- 5:17Speaker 1: missed a start. I mean, that is a, from a
- 5:20Speaker 1: physical standpoint, that is a huge transition, a huge jump
- 5:24Speaker 1: in innings from one to the next.
- 5:28Speaker 2: This is a guy that's been a starter in the past.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I think when you're talking about a guy that may
- 5:33Speaker 2: have entirely been a bullpen pitcher, at least at the
- 5:36Speaker 2: major league level, and then going to starting, I'm always surprised.
- 5:40Speaker 2: more on the skeptical side. And it has worked in
- 5:43Speaker 2: a few instances, not always, but the mindset's totally different.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And you go from max effort to something, you know,
- 5:53Speaker 2: as a starting pitcher, some guys are max effort and
- 5:56Speaker 2: that only lasts for so long. Now look at a
- 6:00Speaker 2: guy like Walbert Urania. I mean, that's not max effort.
- 6:03Speaker 2: That is just how the ball comes out. So it's,
- 6:07Speaker 2: I think Klaston kind of, veers towards max effort sometimes,
- 6:11Speaker 2: but I think he would benefit, uh, not to get off,
- 6:14Speaker 2: but maybe beefing up just a little bit, like we're
- 6:17Speaker 2: talking about to be able to sustain the amount of
- 6:19Speaker 2: innings that Reed is when you're talking about a true ace.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I mean, why is Scooble so coveted? Uh, well, you know,
- 6:26Speaker 2: the Tommy John was one thing, but he's got the build,
- 6:28Speaker 2: the durability. It's not a guarantee, but, uh, most, most workhorses,
- 6:34Speaker 2: as they say, are big dudes that, uh, are built
- 6:37Speaker 2: to last. And yeah, Reid may not be 6'6, but
- 6:41Speaker 2: he's definitely tall enough. He creates tremendous angle. And I
- 6:46Speaker 2: solicited trying to get some opinions of opposing players on Reid.
- 6:49Speaker 2: What makes this guy so tough to hit? The one
- 6:53Speaker 2: in particular I think that made the most sense in
- 6:55Speaker 2: the player in division, but will remain anonymous because, well,
- 6:59Speaker 2: why not? He said the thing when you're facing Detmers
- 7:04Speaker 2: is you cannot ignore his slider. You cannot get off
- 7:08Speaker 2: of it. and stay, ideally as a hitter, you're going
- 7:11Speaker 2: to go up there and hunt the fastball. And that
- 7:14Speaker 2: works until the guy embarrasses you and you're hacking at
- 7:17Speaker 2: stuff in the dirt over and over. And Reed's slider
- 7:20Speaker 2: presents exactly the same as his fastball. And you go
- 7:23Speaker 2: and I'm looking at these videos. I mean, it holds
- 7:25Speaker 2: the same plane. It looks the same until it doesn't.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And it's usually too late. The flip side is you
- 7:31Speaker 2: go up there and you start hunting that slider. Well,
- 7:33Speaker 2: first of all, it's a tough pitch to hit on
- 7:35Speaker 2: its own, even if you are looking for it. And B,
- 7:38Speaker 2: you're not going to have a chance against the fastball.
- 7:40Speaker 2: So he's got hitters, actually left-handers hit him better, which
- 7:44Speaker 2: is not too surprising because they, for whatever reason, they're
- 7:49Speaker 2: not having to contest. The part about the slider, it's
- 7:52Speaker 2: the back foot element. When you say back foot, it's
- 7:55Speaker 2: the one that looks like a meatball for sale. And
- 7:58Speaker 2: I had a humbling experience against that one. I got
- 8:00Speaker 2: a few hits against him too.
- 8:02Speaker 1: You are not the only one. You are not the
- 8:04Speaker 1: only one, my friend.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Oh, my God. People can find it if you want. Well,
- 8:08Speaker 2: when it hits you in the knee, squares, and you
- 8:11Speaker 2: go down on the punch, it's insult to injury. But
- 8:14Speaker 2: there's been a number of guys over the years, Francisco Liriano,
- 8:19Speaker 2: excuse me, he had a wipeout one, Madison Bumgarner, Kershaw
- 8:24Speaker 2: not as much, but there's other guys too, Rodon for
- 8:30Speaker 2: the Yankees. These guys with left-handed pitchers pitching to right-handed
- 8:34Speaker 2: hitters with a wipeout slider, you just have to pull
- 8:37Speaker 2: back a little bit, and you're not looking to do
- 8:41Speaker 2: as much. And so you get people on the defensive
- 8:44Speaker 2: very quick. And when a hitter is on the defensive,
- 8:48Speaker 2: not a lot good happens.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 1: And we're going to take a quick break for a
- 8:52Speaker 1: word from our sponsors. When we come back, we'll talk
- 8:54Speaker 1: more about Reid Detmers and the closer, Ben Joyce. We'll
- 8:57Speaker 1: be right back with more ALO Territory.

- 10:02Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo and
- 10:04Speaker 1: Mike DiGiovanno. Sounds like what you were describing there, Mark,
- 10:07Speaker 1: in terms of the slider and the fastballs, what is
- 10:10Speaker 1: now commonly referred to as tunneling. And what you sort
- 10:14Speaker 1: of described for me reminded me a lot of Clayton Kershaw.
- 10:17Speaker 1: You know, Clayton, for as great as he was, he
- 10:19Speaker 1: really only had three pitches. And they're very similar to
- 10:22Speaker 1: Reed's best three pitches, the fastball, the slider, and that
- 10:25Speaker 1: big looping curveball. But, you know, what made Kershaw so great,
- 10:30Speaker 1: really almost untouchable early on, is the fastball and the
- 10:34Speaker 1: slider came out of that same tunnel. And even later
- 10:37Speaker 1: in his career, when Kershaw was barely topping 90-91 with
- 10:40Speaker 1: his fastball and his slider, really the velo was dipping
- 10:45Speaker 1: on that as well. same thing the pitch comes out
- 10:48Speaker 1: of the same arm slot and of course with reed
- 10:52Speaker 1: he's throwing 94 with the fastball and i think the
- 10:54Speaker 1: slider's somewhere around 86 87 so in terms of a
- 10:58Speaker 1: hitter mark how tough is that to prepare for when
- 11:02Speaker 1: you're throwing those two pitches and especially with reed's variance
- 11:05Speaker 1: on the pitches uh how tough does that make uh
- 11:09Speaker 1: for a.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Hitter makes it extremely tough uh A little bit on Kershaw.
- 11:14Speaker 2: His true slider, he rarely used. And for whatever reason
- 11:18Speaker 2: with me, it was only in 3-2 counts. And it
- 11:21Speaker 2: worked a few times. Finally made the adjustment. But he
- 11:24Speaker 2: wouldn't show me that. But we're talking about his curveball,
- 11:28Speaker 2: which everything is kind of drifting. Slider is the easier
- 11:32Speaker 2: thing to label. These pitch abbreviations are just goofy.
- 11:36Speaker 3: I don't know what the heck. Oh, sweeper, slider, splinker, yeah. Splinker.
- 11:39Speaker 2: But– the thing about Reed and if I were a hitter,
- 11:47Speaker 2: I would probably, I think the approach has got to
- 11:50Speaker 2: be what rally did yesterday. You're going to try and
- 11:53Speaker 2: go to the right center field. You're going to, if
- 11:56Speaker 2: you're trying to pull him, you, you are, you might
- 11:58Speaker 2: as well just pack it in. If he's throwing strikes
- 12:00Speaker 2: that day, a pull approach against a guy like that
- 12:03Speaker 2: is not going to work. You're going to try and
- 12:05Speaker 2: let the ball almost the sensation is going to be,
- 12:07Speaker 2: you're catching it off your back hip. you're sticking to
- 12:10Speaker 2: right center field. If he hangs the breaking ball, that's
- 12:13Speaker 2: going to be the one you're going to pull. You're
- 12:16Speaker 2: going to have to fight off the fastballs. And I'd
- 12:19Speaker 2: be looking to catch a hanging slider. That would be
- 12:22Speaker 2: at the end of the day. And I'd have to
- 12:23Speaker 2: stick to it, knowing that this guy gets his fair
- 12:27Speaker 2: share of punch outs. He's going to When you're going
- 12:32Speaker 2: up against a true ace, and I'm going to say
- 12:33Speaker 2: Reid is that right now, the one lost record, throw
- 12:36Speaker 2: that straight in the toilet. I mean, he has done
- 12:39Speaker 2: his part. If anything, the critique would be, and I
- 12:42Speaker 2: think that this may be a managerial decision, he's been
- 12:45Speaker 2: taken out prematurely a few times. And that's, I can't
- 12:50Speaker 2: reasonably say why always, but that's what I've seen. So
- 12:54Speaker 2: if Reid, the downfall will be not throwing strikes. I
- 12:58Speaker 2: think if he gets ahead of hitters, 0-1, it's the, the,
- 13:03Speaker 2: the outcomes are going to be in his favor tremendously.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I think opposing teams are always going to try and
- 13:08Speaker 2: suck as many pitches out of them as you can.
- 13:10Speaker 2: You're going to try and if he is, um, not
- 13:13Speaker 2: pounding the strike zone, not attacking. And that's the mindset
- 13:16Speaker 2: thing we covered earlier in the year when he flipped
- 13:18Speaker 2: that switch. Um, and I don't know if there's a
- 13:21Speaker 2: definitive moment, but when he, when he realized that I
- 13:25Speaker 2: have the stuff to get any lineup out and I'm
- 13:28Speaker 2: going to come right at you, um, this is the
- 13:31Speaker 2: type of pitcher and these are the type of results
- 13:33Speaker 2: that you're going to see.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I think going to the bullpen for that one year
- 13:37Speaker 1: changed his mindset. You know, I think he, he didn't
- 13:40Speaker 1: throw the change up as much. He pretty much broke
- 13:43Speaker 1: it into three pitches and he was a lot more
- 13:44Speaker 1: aggressive coming out of the bullpen. I got, I have
- 13:47Speaker 1: a hunch that mindset carried over into this year. And
- 13:50Speaker 1: of course, you know, I think the change in pitching
- 13:52Speaker 1: coaches helped him tremendously. We can talk a little bit
- 13:55Speaker 1: more about that in a sec. Let's take a look
- 13:58Speaker 1: at Reed's repertoire this year, the four seamer, is averaging
- 14:02Speaker 1: 94.1 miles an hour, and hitters are averaging 240 at
- 14:07Speaker 1: bats ending with that pitch. The slider, it's an 86
- 14:11Speaker 1: mile an hour average, so a really nice variance between
- 14:15Speaker 1: that and the fastball, and he's held hitters to a
- 14:17Speaker 1: 179 average at bats ending with that pitch. The curve
- 14:22Speaker 1: is 72.3 miles an hour, and I think I saw
- 14:26Speaker 1: a note that said The variance between his curve and fastball,
- 14:31Speaker 1: which is right around 21 miles an hour or so,
- 14:36Speaker 1: is the biggest in Major League Baseball. Hitters with a
- 14:39Speaker 1: 200 average in that bat sending with that pitch. And
- 14:42Speaker 1: the changeup, which he has thrown more this year as
- 14:45Speaker 1: a starter than he did as a reliever, 83.8 miles
- 14:48Speaker 1: an hour with a 235 average against. Mark, that's 400.
- 14:55Speaker 1: I don't know that I classify his changeup as a
- 14:58Speaker 1: plus pitch at this point, but four pitches with really good.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Variance on all.
- 15:02Speaker 1: And once again, I have to assume as a hitter,
- 15:06Speaker 1: when you've got even a fourth pitch to look out for,
- 15:09Speaker 1: it's tough. But what is that curveball? And you mentioned
- 15:13Speaker 1: Kershaw's curve, very similar, huge drop. I think it's somewhere
- 15:19Speaker 1: around 61 inches. I don't know if you can catch
- 15:22Speaker 1: that out of there or pick it. you know, identify
- 15:25Speaker 1: that out of the hand a little better than the
- 15:27Speaker 1: slider is there. It does give you time to react.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I'm assuming because it's only 72 mile an hour pitch,
- 15:33Speaker 1: but as a hitter, you see that fastball and all
- 15:37Speaker 1: of a sudden that big looping curve comes in, that
- 15:39Speaker 1: can make you look silly at times.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Uh, having three pitches to respect is too many for,
- 15:46Speaker 2: for almost every hitter. I think that, uh, and let
- 15:49Speaker 2: alone a fourth. And actually last night reads change up rated, uh,
- 15:53Speaker 2: quite well. Um, now when you look at those numbers,
- 15:56Speaker 2: especially he, and on the slugging percentage, because that is
- 16:00Speaker 2: where the damage is done and you do not want
- 16:02Speaker 2: to get beat, um, on your fourth best pitch. So
- 16:06Speaker 2: until you're able to replicate it more. So the, on
- 16:10Speaker 2: this change up the slugging percentage for 51, that's creeping up, um,
- 16:14Speaker 2: pretty high and it's given up three home runs and
- 16:17Speaker 2: he's thrown comparatively, um, hard, you know, not many.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Um, yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 2: So, He is a guy that has elite breaking balls.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Now the curve ball you're mentioning, Barry Zito for somebody
- 16:30Speaker 2: my age.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I remember.
- 16:32Speaker 2: You're looking at it. And then Koufax, if I'm not mistaken,
- 16:37Speaker 2: the definition of it. So Rich Hill, who had played forever,
- 16:45Speaker 2: I hadn't faced him until a little later on in
- 16:49Speaker 2: his career. I'm looking at the velocity numbers and they,
- 16:53Speaker 2: are extremely modest. I'm like looking at the, you know, that,
- 16:57Speaker 2: then you look at the numbers and what hitters are
- 16:59Speaker 2: hitting against them. And I'm like, what is this a deal?
- 17:01Speaker 2: I mean, this guy's, uh, throwing slop until you get
- 17:05Speaker 2: up there and you realize, uh, why do people put
- 17:08Speaker 2: such an emphasis on spin? It's because in this instance,
- 17:11Speaker 2: Rich Hill's curve ball, that was 80 miles. And actually
- 17:16Speaker 2: it was probably closer to 76, 77. It looked 10
- 17:19Speaker 2: miles an hour harder. And I, when you're re, sitting
- 17:22Speaker 2: there wondering if you're actually on time for a curve
- 17:25Speaker 2: ball and why is it getting on me so quickly?
- 17:27Speaker 2: And I have a suspicion, uh, I haven't faced Reed,
- 17:30Speaker 2: but his breaking balls even probably, uh, challenge your timing in,
- 17:35Speaker 2: in a way that now that separation, the curve ball
- 17:37Speaker 2: is not, that's an enormous variance covering 10 miles an
- 17:41Speaker 2: hour is tough covering 21 miles an hour. Uh, at,
- 17:46Speaker 2: at best, you're going to get one of those, you know,
- 17:48Speaker 2: front foot one handed type swings, um, Some guys are exceptional,
- 17:54Speaker 2: like an Altuve or something, a front foot type hitter.
- 17:57Speaker 2: They can stay through those a little bit better, but
- 18:01Speaker 2: for a guy that's looking to lift and separate, it's
- 18:04Speaker 2: going to be a whole lot of whiffs, and we've
- 18:06Speaker 2: seen that.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Can you tell how much the pitching coach change has
- 18:10Speaker 1: had an impact on Reen? We have addressed the use
- 18:14Speaker 1: of technology, using the track man on the bullpen. I mean,
- 18:19Speaker 1: there's only so much he can take out to the
- 18:20Speaker 1: mound with you during a game. Can you tell, in
- 18:24Speaker 1: terms of pitch usage, it doesn't seem like there's been
- 18:26Speaker 1: any drastic adjustments in terms of Reid's mix, as opposed
- 18:30Speaker 1: to some of the other starters, like Ryan Johnson. Is
- 18:34Speaker 1: that maybe just a mental thing for him, that he
- 18:37Speaker 1: feels more prepared during his starts?
- 18:40Speaker 2: I think when you're talking about the change, Reid seemed
- 18:43Speaker 2: to be the main one that wanted more technology involved,
- 18:47Speaker 2: the track manager, in particular. And Mike Maddox was reluctant
- 18:52Speaker 2: to use that maybe a couple of times, but that
- 18:55Speaker 2: seemed to be a big sticking point. I do think
- 18:58Speaker 2: Mike Maddox was probably able to help read with the
- 19:00Speaker 2: mental side of it. And that, that is a big deal.
- 19:05Speaker 2: When you're talking about the technology and I'm looking at
- 19:08Speaker 2: my feed, which looks again, I think the issue here,
- 19:13Speaker 2: and if we have any listeners that are extremely tech savvy,
- 19:17Speaker 2: Spectrum's internet is not cutting it and my camera is
- 19:19Speaker 2: overpowering it. So when you hear me, it is distracting
- 19:23Speaker 2: because I'm looking at it myself. There you go. There's
- 19:26Speaker 2: a behind the scenes, your first ever on Halo territory.
- 19:31Speaker 2: So Ryan Johnson briefly, he canned, I've talked about it
- 19:35Speaker 2: a couple of times, his arm slot was a big deal.
- 19:37Speaker 2: The delivery on his, I believe his sinker and his
- 19:40Speaker 2: split finger was wildly different. So he's streamlined that. His
- 19:44Speaker 2: cutter and his sweeper come from, I think, 21 degrees,
- 19:47Speaker 2: so they're coming from an identical arm slot. Reed doesn't
- 19:50Speaker 2: have that problem. All of his pitches come out of
- 19:53Speaker 2: about the same one. I think he has probably some
- 19:55Speaker 2: Kershaw element to where you are not seeing the ball
- 19:58Speaker 2: until it is halfway there or more. And that is death.
- 20:01Speaker 3: To a header.
- 20:02Speaker 2: You're going to have to, you will figure out a
- 20:04Speaker 2: way if you get enough at bats, but with the
- 20:07Speaker 2: way that they've reformatted, you know, playing a guy, previously
- 20:10Speaker 2: in division, you might see him four times a year now,
- 20:13Speaker 2: maybe two, maybe three. Um, and that does matter. Um,
- 20:16Speaker 2: as you accumulate at bats, you, you can start to,
- 20:19Speaker 2: you know, sniff a guy's timing a little bit better.
- 20:22Speaker 2: And likewise, pitchers can adjust to you. And that, uh,
- 20:25Speaker 2: that happened to me over the course of my career.
- 20:27Speaker 2: David Price came to mind. He, uh, I got him
- 20:29Speaker 2: and then he got me. Hmm.
- 20:31Speaker 3: All right.
- 20:31Speaker 1: We can take one more break for a word from
- 20:32Speaker 1: our sponsors. As we come back, we're going to address
- 20:35Speaker 1: the million dollar question. Uh, Reed Detmer is his future
- 20:39Speaker 1: in Anaheim. We'll be right back with more Halo Territory.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Eric Kratz, you're smart. You were a catcher in Major
- 20:46Speaker 4: League Baseball for a long time. You need to be
- 20:48Speaker 4: smart to be a catcher, and you also need to
- 20:50Speaker 4: be smart to get the best possible wireless plan that
- 20:55Speaker 4: you can get. Don't fall for the gimmicks or certain
- 20:58Speaker 4: types of sign-up bonuses. Just give me the cheap rate
- 21:02Speaker 4: and the premium wireless.
- 21:04Speaker 2: That's what Mint Mobile gives us, and you've Don't pay
- 21:07Speaker 2: a lot and you get a lot.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Hmm.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Seems like a no brainer, even for what you said,
- 21:12Speaker 2: a smart guy.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Yup.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Be smart. Get your new wireless plan for just 15
- 21:16Speaker 4: bucks a month. Go to mint mobile.com slash territory. Cut
- 21:19Speaker 4: your wireless bill to 15 bucks a month at mint

- 21:26Speaker 4: $ 90 for six months or $ 180 for 12 months plan
- 21:29Speaker 4: required $ 15 per month. Equivalent taxes and fees, extra initial
- 21:33Speaker 4: plan term only greater than 50 gigabytes may slow when
- 21:35Speaker 4: network is busy. Includes up to 20 gigabyte hotspot. Capable

- 21:44Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo and
- 21:47Speaker 1: Mike DiGiovanna. Well, Reid Detmers is making $ 2. 625 million this year.
- 21:53Speaker 1: It was his first year of arbitration. That's a pretty
- 21:56Speaker 1: good bargain for the Halos. He'll certainly double that, if
- 21:59Speaker 1: not more, in arbitration next season. And he's got two
- 22:03Speaker 1: more years of arbitration before he becomes a free agent
- 22:08Speaker 1: in 2029. Mark, you're the GM of the Angels. The
- 22:11Speaker 1: rebuilding process has arrived. They're probably going to lose 100 games.
- 22:15Speaker 1: They're still a pretty good distance away from a playoff contention.
- 22:22Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 22:22Speaker 1: Would you go to arbitration with Reed next year? Maybe
- 22:25Speaker 1: play it year by year and see where things stand?
- 22:27Speaker 1: Would you try to Sign him to an extension that
- 22:31Speaker 1: could cost you an average annual value of $ 20 million
- 22:35Speaker 1: a year or more? Or do you trade him with his–
- 22:39Speaker 1: he's at peak value right now. I don't think his
- 22:41Speaker 1: value is ever going to get higher. He would probably
- 22:44Speaker 1: net you a pretty good package in return. What do
- 22:46Speaker 1: you think?
- 22:48Speaker 2: Let's hear your answer first. It sounded like you were really–
- 22:51Speaker 2: that last– you know, option, the voice kind of changed
- 22:56Speaker 2: a bit.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Is that what you're thinking? Wait, when do you think
- 22:59Speaker 3: I won?
- 23:01Speaker 2: Well, it was the last one with the peak trade value.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I would actually go to arbitration with him for one
- 23:07Speaker 2: more year. I think you look at this division and
- 23:12Speaker 2: we've talked about it. I'm not saying the Angels could
- 23:16Speaker 2: or maybe should win this division next year with some
- 23:19Speaker 2: Pretty good changes and deals and.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Acquisitions over the winter.
- 23:23Speaker 1: But my goodness, you're going to probably get to the
- 23:26Speaker 1: win of the division here with a 500 record if
- 23:28Speaker 1: not a couple games over. Maybe, who knows, maybe even under.
- 23:31Speaker 1: This division is there for the taking. I don't think
- 23:34Speaker 1: it's going to take a drastic overhaul for the Angels
- 23:38Speaker 1: to maybe compete. If they make some really smart trades,
- 23:41Speaker 1: some really good signings, I think they can compete next year.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Reed's still two more full years away from free agency.
- 23:48Speaker 1: If he has another year like this and the Angels
- 23:51Speaker 1: are on the rise next year, maybe even in contention,
- 23:55Speaker 1: even if they don't make the playoffs, then I think
- 23:58Speaker 1: that's the year you lock them up to that contract
- 24:01Speaker 1: and you build your rotation around them. I just think,
- 24:05Speaker 1: you know, a lot of teams, you know, a lot
- 24:08Speaker 1: of Boris clients obviously do this. They get to free
- 24:11Speaker 1: agency no matter what. I just think from the Angels' perspective,
- 24:16Speaker 1: I don't think you want to trade this guy right now.
- 24:18Speaker 1: He's just too good. If he's not an ace, he's
- 24:21Speaker 1: a dominant number two. He's dependable. He's durable. He's striking
- 24:28Speaker 1: guys out. He's keeping you in almost every game. You
- 24:32Speaker 1: only have so many of those pitchers around this organization.
- 24:35Speaker 1: I think you at least go year to year with
- 24:37Speaker 1: him for next year or maybe even the year after.
- 24:39Speaker 1: But if he has this kind of year next year,
- 24:42Speaker 1: I would try my best not to let him get
- 24:43Speaker 1: to free agency in the following year.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Is Reed represented by Scott?
- 24:50Speaker 1: I don't know off the top of my head, but
- 24:52Speaker 1: I don't believe so. We will look it up and
- 24:56Speaker 1: get that answer for next show, for sure.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Either way, I'm sure he's with somebody that is well
- 25:04Speaker 2: aware of his value and is going to want the
- 25:07Speaker 2: best for his clients. which is also the best for
- 25:09Speaker 2: the agent, if you can believe that out there, as
- 25:12Speaker 2: they get a percentage of the contract. And rightfully so,
- 25:16Speaker 2: they do a lot of work. But if it were me,
- 25:20Speaker 2: I would be exploring both options. But definitely at least
- 25:28Speaker 2: trying to see if there is something that makes sense.
- 25:32Speaker 2: And I think Reid strikes me as a guy that
- 25:33Speaker 2: would be reasonable. Now he's rightfully so can ask for
- 25:39Speaker 2: something that's going to be 20, 25 a year. But
- 25:44Speaker 2: that's what it costs for great starting pitching. And this
- 25:47Speaker 2: organization has had a reluctance, as we've talked about, basically
- 25:52Speaker 2: for quite a while, at least a decade, to really
- 25:55Speaker 2: invest in starting pitching. Artie Moreno was, I don't know,
- 26:00Speaker 2: a bit gun-shy, but never really wanted to.
- 26:03Speaker 3: To say the least.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Yeah, he'd take it. And I mean... he has his
- 26:08Speaker 2: reasons getting burned by a pitcher that spends a ton
- 26:10Speaker 2: of time on, on the shelf is very undesirable. Um,
- 26:13Speaker 2: but it's a double-edged sword. You got to have premium
- 26:16Speaker 2: pitching to win. Um, and if you're not great at
- 26:19Speaker 2: developing it, which I think they will get better at, but, um,
- 26:22Speaker 2: and they have, there's a homegrown talent here and that's a,
- 26:26Speaker 2: that's a very good thing for the organization. But, uh,
- 26:28Speaker 2: I think Reed is a guy that if you can
- 26:30Speaker 2: get them locked up for seven years, um, I probably
- 26:34Speaker 2: wouldn't go out to 10. I think the days of
- 26:36Speaker 2: that are over, but, uh, five to seven years would
- 26:39Speaker 2: be great for him and great for the organization. Give
- 26:43Speaker 2: him that stability. And he's not a guy that I
- 26:46Speaker 2: worry about if he were to sign a big deal,
- 26:48Speaker 2: you know, shutting it down or not put it in
- 26:51Speaker 2: the work. He seems to be motivated by on-field performance,
- 26:55Speaker 2: which is number one.
- 26:56Speaker 1: All right. And thanks to the magic of the worldwide
- 26:59Speaker 1: interweb and the iPhone, I can tell you that Reed
- 27:02Speaker 1: is represented by Excel Sports Management, not Scott Forrest. All right,
- 27:06Speaker 1: we're going to close the show talking with the other
- 27:09Speaker 1: end of the pitching staff, the closer. Ben Joyce, he's
- 27:13Speaker 1: 14 games into his comeback from shoulder surgery. He's put
- 27:16Speaker 1: up numbers that are not too bad, 3.38 ERA, five saves.
- 27:21Speaker 1: We should note he finally took over the saves leader
- 27:24Speaker 1: for the team, passing Jordan Romano and Ryan Zephyrjohn.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Good for him.
- 27:28Speaker 1: 15 strikeouts and nine walks.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Nine walks are a little high.
- 27:33Speaker 1: For 13 in a third innings, but To me, he
- 27:36Speaker 1: just doesn't look right. The velo's there. He's averaging 101
- 27:40Speaker 1: on the four-seamer. He's hit 103 several times. But he's
- 27:45Speaker 1: really struggling with his command. He seems to be missing
- 27:49Speaker 1: arm side up and away a lot with his fastball.
- 27:53Speaker 1: And you could see the look of relief on his
- 27:55Speaker 1: face when he got J.P. Crawford to line out the
- 27:58Speaker 1: first with two on to end that game Monday night.
- 28:02Speaker 1: To me, it looked like a guy who felt he
- 28:05Speaker 1: was really lucky to escape that gym as opposed to
- 28:08Speaker 1: a guy who's holster in 100-300-400 and just knows he
- 28:13Speaker 1: can dominate. Definitely the confidence seems like it's not quite there.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I'm sure that comes with an injury like he had.
- 28:21Speaker 1: But does he look healthy to you, Mark, first of all?
- 28:25Speaker 1: And what would your concerns be with this kid right now?
- 28:29Speaker 2: This one is interesting to me. The velocity, yes, is there,
- 28:34Speaker 2: but the command is borderline unusable. And here's the reality.
- 28:41Speaker 2: If a hitter goes up there and just statues, doesn't
- 28:43Speaker 2: take the bat off his shoulder, what's going to come first?
- 28:47Speaker 2: Four before three or three before four? The misses are
- 28:52Speaker 2: wild to say the least. Multiple feet outside, almost as
- 28:57Speaker 2: if he's not really being able to feel where his
- 29:01Speaker 2: hand is in space or the grip on the ball.
- 29:04Speaker 2: That's kind of what I'm a little bit concerned about.
- 29:09Speaker 2: If he says that health is there, then this is
- 29:12Speaker 2: probably more of a rust thing. But when I'm looking
- 29:15Speaker 2: at a guy that you're sitting there saying, this should
- 29:19Speaker 2: be an easy lead, especially with his stuff. I mean,
- 29:23Speaker 2: just say, you know, throw right down the middle. with
- 29:25Speaker 2: this kind of stuff and see what they can do.
- 29:27Speaker 2: That's the mentality that a guy that throws 104 plus
- 29:30Speaker 2: miles an hour, why would you ever try and work
- 29:33Speaker 2: the corners when you have that kind of stuff? And he,
- 29:36Speaker 2: yeah um the splinker that's i'm gonna have a hard
- 29:40Speaker 2: time using that regularly but uh that seems erratic too
- 29:44Speaker 2: but uh it is it is an off-speed pitch really
- 29:48Speaker 2: i mean he's in the mold of troy percival go
- 29:51Speaker 2: right at him i mean troy had a little bit
- 29:52Speaker 2: of a breaking ball that that was only used sparingly
- 29:56Speaker 2: um and working kind of more up in the strike
- 29:59Speaker 2: zone than down you're throwing that hard as a hitter.
- 30:01Speaker 2: It's easier to get the bat on the ball when
- 30:03Speaker 2: it's about knee high, then when it's waist belly button,
- 30:07Speaker 2: that's when you get all those whiffs and guys missing badly.
- 30:11Speaker 2: And then you can mix in your, your off speed
- 30:13Speaker 2: pitch and be great. If he could locate that kind
- 30:16Speaker 2: of more strike the ball in the dirt, but right
- 30:18Speaker 2: now it's the fastball command. And then as a catcher,
- 30:21Speaker 2: I can't see them. I'll go back and look and
- 30:24Speaker 2: a little closer. I assume they're just sitting up right
- 30:25Speaker 2: down the middle and giving the biggest target possible because it's,
- 30:28Speaker 2: all he needs to do is throw strikes. Uh, but
- 30:31Speaker 2: right now, um, it does seem like there's a lot
- 30:34Speaker 2: of uncertainty and I think they're going to have to
- 30:36Speaker 2: figure out more of a mental thing or more of
- 30:39Speaker 2: a physical thing.
- 30:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:40Speaker 1: To me, it also changes the calculus of your off
- 30:43Speaker 1: season approach. Obviously the bullpen is a huge area of concern.
- 30:48Speaker 1: The depth is just non-existent right now. You're going to
- 30:50Speaker 1: have to bolster that with several quality arms. Uh, but
- 30:55Speaker 1: I think it would probably behoove the Angels to, at
- 30:58Speaker 1: least this winter, assuming we have a season at some
- 31:01Speaker 1: point next year, to try to sign a closer for
- 31:04Speaker 1: one year, sort of that Kenley Jansen type from 2025,
- 31:08Speaker 1: a guy toward the end of his career who can
- 31:11Speaker 1: provide a little stability, a little consistency in that ninth inning,
- 31:18Speaker 1: who can nail down some of these one-run games. The Angels'
- 31:22Speaker 1: record in one-run games has been terrible this year. And
- 31:25Speaker 1: maybe at that point, if you can confine Ben Joyce
- 31:30Speaker 1: to a seventh or eighth inning role, maybe take a
- 31:32Speaker 1: little of that pressure off. If that is the case,
- 31:36Speaker 1: maybe he'll be ready to be closer in 2028. But
- 31:38Speaker 1: I don't know. There's something about this guy.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Are you talking about an Aroldis Chapman type guy?
- 31:46Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 31:48Speaker 1: I'm still not sure if he's going to be a
- 31:49Speaker 1: free agent. There's been some dispute because I think you
- 31:52Speaker 1: might have a.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Ah, whatever.
- 31:54Speaker 2: It's better if he is. I mean, he fit that
- 31:57Speaker 2: mold perfectly.
- 31:57Speaker 3: New owner. Yeah.
- 31:59Speaker 2: New feel, new vibe. And you got the, what are the,
- 32:02Speaker 2: what's the nickname? The missile. Yeah.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:04Speaker 2: You know, ageless wonder, but very experienced, knows what he's
- 32:09Speaker 2: doing and brings, you know, that's definitely a presence.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Yeah, David Bednar is available. I know he for sure,
- 32:16Speaker 1: he'll be a free agent. There are a couple of
- 32:18Speaker 1: guys that fit that mold. I just think that would
- 32:21Speaker 1: give you, you know, if you could use Joyce in
- 32:24Speaker 1: a setup role and he's more comfortable there, that improves
- 32:26Speaker 1: your whole bullpen to me.
- 32:28Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 32:29Speaker 2: I got two final questions for you, and you're right
- 32:32Speaker 2: about that. Why did the Angels trade Rizal Iglesias again?
- 32:35Speaker 2: Because I believe he's just lighting it up for Atlanta
- 32:38Speaker 2: yet again.
- 32:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Why would they move on from him?
- 32:41Speaker 1: I think that was a salary situation on a team.
- 32:44Speaker 1: I think they traded him, like, right after he signed
- 32:47Speaker 1: a pretty lengthy extension. And, you know, the team was
- 32:51Speaker 1: out of contention, looking to do what we thought they
- 32:54Speaker 1: should do every year.
- 32:55Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 32:56Speaker 1: Trade some guys at their highest value. Yeah, I always
- 32:59Speaker 1: liked him. I liked him better than Estevez, you know.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Raul has some great stuff. And, yeah, he's certainly a
- 33:07Speaker 1: key member of a pretty darn good Braves team.
- 33:10Speaker 3: What else you got, Mark?
- 33:11Speaker 2: I don't know. My name is going to move. But
- 33:14Speaker 2: just a fun one. Who's going to be the first
- 33:17Speaker 2: to 200Ks on the Halos?
- 33:20Speaker 3: That would be Zach Netto.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Oh, I thought you were going to say Reed Devers.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Well, Reed Devers, unless they're going to start him on
- 33:28Speaker 1: zero days rest or one day rest.
- 33:29Speaker 3: I don't think that's going to happen until the weekend.
- 33:32Speaker 2: We'll see. Where's Zach at?
- 33:37Speaker 3: 198 entering Tuesday?
- 33:39Speaker 2: Yeah, Gilbert and Kirby are coming up. But, you know,
- 33:43Speaker 2: that could be.
- 33:43Speaker 3: A little odd motivation.
- 33:45Speaker 2: But if it happens, whatever, get it over with. He
- 33:48Speaker 2: has played better. Great relay throw, as noted on the broadcast.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Many times.
- 33:53Speaker 2: 97.3. But, I mean, it took that kind of throw.
- 33:57Speaker 2: I don't know what the Mariners were really thinking that
- 33:59Speaker 2: early in the game, strategically challenging, unless they thought, you know,
- 34:03Speaker 2: that could be what we talked about earlier, a lot
- 34:06Speaker 2: of respect for Detmers, where you don't think you're going
- 34:09Speaker 2: to get that many runs and you've got to push
- 34:10Speaker 2: the envelope. And they learned the real hard way because, oh,
- 34:15Speaker 2: that was a poor job coaching home plate, too, for
- 34:17Speaker 2: the younger players out there. Calzone looked like he got
- 34:21Speaker 2: caught just spectating. He didn't indicate that a throw was
- 34:25Speaker 2: coming in, and Crawford slid kind of, but awkward. Very ugly.
- 34:31Speaker 2: As the next hitter on deck, you need to get
- 34:34Speaker 2: in there. You need to indicate where the guy's going
- 34:36Speaker 2: to slide and to where he should be sliding based
- 34:39Speaker 2: on the throw because he's got his back turned. There's
- 34:42Speaker 2: some education for you, and it's about all I can
- 34:45Speaker 2: take looking at this blurry piece.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Merry Christmas. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Crawford was the Crawford that went on the plate on
- 34:53Speaker 1: that play, right?
- 34:54Speaker 2: Correct.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Yeah, he was lucky to escape major injury because his
- 34:58Speaker 1: left ankle and shin, I believe, clipped Darnot's shin guards.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Darnot did a great job of locking the plate after he.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Got the ball.
- 35:08Speaker 1: And yeah, the, the on-deck batter needed to tell him
- 35:11Speaker 1: to slide way more to his right and maybe try
- 35:13Speaker 1: one of those hook slides where you're slapping the plate
- 35:15Speaker 1: with your hand, because that could have been a disaster
- 35:17Speaker 1: for JP.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Darno is exceptional at pushing the envelope of blocking or
- 35:22Speaker 2: not blocking. I believe he was one that, I mean,
- 35:24Speaker 2: the throw is coming in and receiving, but when I
- 35:28Speaker 2: was coming up, you would crush that catcher. I mean, that,
- 35:32Speaker 2: that would have been one of those where everyone's laid
- 35:34Speaker 2: out and, I think that the game is in a
- 35:36Speaker 2: better place because of it. But I do now look
- 35:38Speaker 2: at the runners and they, especially if you're going in
- 35:42Speaker 2: head first, you find out real quick, you know, that
- 35:46Speaker 2: is not the way to go. You got to really
- 35:48Speaker 2: what he should have done is that power slide. I
- 35:50Speaker 2: talked about at one point he needs to as the
- 35:53Speaker 2: runner and you don't go in spikes up. That's not
- 35:55Speaker 2: what I'm saying, but you got to try and knock
- 35:58Speaker 2: the catcher over with a slide. So if you're just
- 36:00Speaker 2: trying to slide to get to the front of home plate,
- 36:03Speaker 2: you might not love the result. You've got to go
- 36:05Speaker 2: in there forcefully, and much better job coaching by the
- 36:10Speaker 2: on-deck hitter was needed. Yeah.
- 36:12Speaker 1: All right, we're going to end this show with that. Hey,
