- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Thursday.
- 0:15It is the 14th of December, which means in only 10 short
- 0:19days it will be Christmas Eve. And as we lie in bed, we will
- 0:23hear those sleigh bells jingling in the skies.
- 0:27Or maybe not. But did you as a kid, ever lie
- 0:31in bed and listen and and actually really just be 100%
- 0:35sure that you heard those bells? You could hear that activity in
- 0:38the sky, as with great anticipation you knew that some
- 0:43gifts were coming your way. Yeah, I still remember it very
- 0:47clearly. I I would have sworn I would
- 0:49have, underoath testified that I had heard those bells.
- 0:55There you go, Sean, the eternal optimist.
- 0:58Today we have got Israel, the eternal optimists, as today is
- 1:03this beautiful reading. It is a brief one.
- 1:05It is God's people through Isaiah, just begging God to stop
- 1:11being silent and to come out in defence of them and in their
- 1:16favour. It is wonderful and it can be
- 1:20our cry. In fact, it can be our
- 1:22celebration because the God of the universe has spoken, He has
- 1:27revealed himself, and it has all been for our favour and our
- 1:33good. And so we get to read this
- 1:35knowing in the fullness of time that God has already delivered
- 1:39this and will deliver this eternally to us.
- 1:42So let us read together Isaiah chapter 64.
- 1:57Oh, that you would burst from the heavens and come down.
- 2:01How the mountains would quake in your presence as fire causes
- 2:06wood to burn and water to boil. Your coming would make the
- 2:10nations tremble. Then your enemies would learn
- 2:14the reason for your fame. When you came down long ago, you
- 2:19did awesome deeds beyond our highest expectations.
- 2:23And oh, how the mountains quaked.
- 2:26For since the world began, no ear has heard, and no eye has
- 2:31seen, a God like you and works for those who wait for him.
- 2:37You welcome those who gladly do good, who follow godly ways.
- 2:43But you have been very angry with us, for we were not godly.
- 2:49We are constant sinners. How can people like us be saved?
- 2:54We are all infected and impure with sin when we display our
- 2:58righteous deeds. I am nothing but filthy rags.
- 3:03Like autumn leaves. We wither and fall, and our sins
- 3:07sweep us away like the wind. Yet no one calls on your name or
- 3:12pleads with you for mercy. Therefore you have turned away
- 3:17from us and turned us over to our sins.
- 3:21And yet, O Lord, you are our father.
- 3:25We are the clay and you are the Potter.
- 3:28We all are formed by your hand. Don't be so angry with us, Lord,
- 3:35please don't remember our sins forever.
- 3:38Look at us. We pray and see that we are all
- 3:42your people. Your holy cities are destroyed.
- 3:47Zion is a wilderness. Yes, Jerusalem is a desolate
- 3:51ruin. The holy and beautiful temple
- 3:54where our ancestors praised you has been burned down, and all
- 3:59the things of beauty are destroyed.
- 4:02After all this, Lord, must you still refuse to help us?
- 4:07Will you continue to be silent and punish us?
- 4:21Jesus? We thank you for all that you
- 4:23have done for us. We thank you that there you were
- 4:28in the beginning, forming the earth on which we live, and you
- 4:33have been present throughout time, holding time and space and
- 4:38eternity in your mighty hands. And then, because of our sin and
- 4:44stubbornness, you chose to come here and to live amongst us.
- 4:51And we are getting ready to celebrate that this Christmas.
- 4:56But here you are, our eternal God, who has now saved us, who
- 5:03has sacrificed yourself and given up everything so that we
- 5:07can have a way to be drawn back into your presence with you, the
- 5:15Holy Spirit and our Father all together.
- 5:19Thank you, Jesus. You are supreme over all.
- 5:25And you've done all of this out of love for us.
- 5:28Just wow. And so we praise you and place
- 5:36you at the highest place of honor.
- 5:38And we love you. And it's in your name that we
- 5:41pray. Amen.
