- 0:11Hello friends, it is Sean here. It is Monday the 18th of
- 0:16September and I am so glad that you and I get to read the Bible
- 0:21together. This week we are diving head
- 0:24first into the New Testament, listening to Luke convince his
- 0:28friend that Jesus has in fact died and risen and is Lord.
- 0:34We are reading through the book of Acts and we are up to the
- 0:37second chapter. This is the chapter where it all
- 0:40happens. This is the chapter where we
- 0:42meet the third part of the Trinity.
- 0:45The Holy Spirit is introduced to us beautifully.
- 0:49Yes, this is where you say, Sean.
- 0:50The Holy Spirit has always been there.
- 0:52It's been there from the beginning of Genesis, hovering
- 0:55over the water. Yeah, yeah, I know that.
- 0:58But today we get a nice introduction and we see the Holy
- 1:00Spirit come to Jesus followers to say that yes, Jesus is God
- 1:06and this is God continuing to be present in the lives of his
- 1:11followers. So why don't you join me, You
- 1:13and me? Let's go all the way back 2000
- 1:16years to that little upstairs room where something amazing is
- 1:20about to happen. Join me, friends.
- 1:23Let's read together. Acts Chapter 2
- 1:36On the day of Pentecost, all the believers were meeting together
- 1:40at one place. Suddenly there was a sound from
- 1:44heaven, like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled
- 1:48the house where they were sitting.
- 1:50Then what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and
- 1:54settled on each of them, and everyone present was filled with
- 1:58the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages as
- 2:02the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
- 2:05At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in
- 2:08Jerusalem. When they heard the loud noise,
- 2:11everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their
- 2:14own languages being spoken by the believers.
- 2:17They were completely amazed. How can this be?
- 2:20They exclaimed. These people are all from
- 2:23Galilee, yet we hear them speaking in our own native
- 2:26languages. Here we are, Parthians, Meads,
- 2:30Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia,
- 2:35Pontius, the province of Asia, Frigia, Pamphilia, Egypt, and
- 2:41the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both
- 2:46Jews and converts to Judaism, Crescents and Arabs.
- 2:50And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages
- 2:55about the wonderful things God has done.
- 2:58They stood there amazed and perplexed.
- 3:01What can this mean? They asked each other, but
- 3:04others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying they're just drunk,
- 3:07That's all. Then Peter stepped forward with
- 3:10the 11 other apostles and shouted to the crowd.
- 3:14Listen carefully, all of you fellow Jews and residents of
- 3:18Jerusalem. Make no mistake about this.
- 3:21These people are not drunk, as some of you are Assuming 9:00 in
- 3:25the morning is much too early for that.
- 3:27No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel.
- 3:32In the last days, God says, I will pour out my spirit upon all
- 3:37people. Your sons and daughters will
- 3:39prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men
- 3:43will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out My
- 3:47spirit even on My servants, men and women alike, and they will
- 3:51prophesy. I will cause wonders in the
- 3:54heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and
- 3:58clouds of smoke. The sun will become dark and the
- 4:02moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of
- 4:06the Lord arrives. But everyone who calls on the
- 4:09name of the Lord will be saved. People of Israel, listen.
- 4:15God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful
- 4:19miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know.
- 4:24But God knew what would happen, and this prearranged plan was
- 4:28carried out when Jesus was betrayed with the help of
- 4:32lawless Gentiles. You nailed him to a cross and
- 4:35killed him. But God released him from the
- 4:38horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could
- 4:42not keep him in its grip. King David said this about him.
- 4:47I see that the Lord is always with me.
- 4:50I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me.
- 4:53No wonder my heart is glad and my tongue shouts his praises.
- 4:58My body rests in hope, for you will not leave my soul among the
- 5:03dead, or allow your holy 1 to rot in the grave.
- 5:07You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with
- 5:11the joy of your presence. Dear brothers, think about this.
- 5:17You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn't referring
- 5:19to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still
- 5:23here among us. But he was a prophet, and he
- 5:27knew God had promised with an oath that one of David's own
- 5:31descendants would sit on his throne.
- 5:34David was looking into the future and Speaking of the
- 5:36Messiah's resurrection, he was saying that God would not leave
- 5:40him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the grave.
- 5:44God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this
- 5:50now. He is exalted to the place of
- 5:53highest honor in heaven at God's right hand.
- 5:57And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy
- 6:01Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.
- 6:07For David himself never ascended into heaven.
- 6:10Yet he said, the Lord said to my Lord, Sit at the place of honour
- 6:16at my right hand, until I humble your enemies, making them a
- 6:20footstool under your feet. So let every one in Israel know
- 6:24for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified
- 6:30into both Lord and Messiah. Peter's words pierced their
- 6:36hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, Brothers,
- 6:41what should we do? Peter replied, Each of you must
- 6:46repent of your sins and turn to God and be baptized in the name
- 6:50of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
- 6:54Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
- 6:57This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away,
- 7:03all who have been called by the Lord our God.
- 7:07Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging
- 7:11all his listeners, Save yourselves from this crooked
- 7:15generation. Those who believed what Peter
- 7:18said were baptized and added to the church that day about 3000.
- 7:23In all, all the believers devoted themselves to the
- 7:28apostles, teaching and to fellowship and to sharing in
- 7:31meals, including the Lord's Supper, and to prayer a deep
- 7:36sense of awe. I came over them all, and the
- 7:39apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders,
- 7:43And all the believers met together in one place and shared
- 7:47everything they had. They sold their property and
- 7:50possessions, and shared the money with those in need.
- 7:53They worshiped together at the temple each day, met in homes
- 7:57for the Lord's Supper, and shared their meals with great
- 8:00joy and generosity, all the while praising God and enjoying
- 8:05the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to
- 8:09their fellowship those who were being saved.
- 8:22Jesus, here you are, bringing your spirit and blessing your
- 8:27followers, planting your church in our world.
- 8:35Thank you for your mission to save us.
- 8:37Yes, in your life and your death.
- 8:41But here, in your resurrection and the beginning of your
- 8:44church, thank you. That here we are, thousands of
- 8:47years later, on the other side of the globe, getting to be a
- 8:51part of this same church that you planted so that we could
- 8:58continue your work, sharing your spirit, your love, proclaiming
- 9:04your Kingdom so that more and more can know of your saving
- 9:08grace. We love you, and we are so
- 9:12grateful for everything that you've done for us.
- 9:15We just praise you, our living, loving God, and it's in Your
- 9:21name that we pray Jesus. Amen.
