  Be careful what you ask for. Have you ever wanted something
• 0:15
  so badly? A relationship, a certain
• 0:18
  opportunity, a particular outcome, and prayed for it,
• 0:22
  pushed for it, and maybe even got it, only to realize it came
• 0:26
  with a cost you didn't see coming?
• 0:28
  Yes, that's a real thing and it's not a new problem.
• 0:33
  First Samuel chapter 8 tells the story of Israel demanding a
• 0:37
  king. God had been their king.
• 0:40
  He had LED them, protected them, provided for them in
• 0:43
  supernatural ways. But they looked around at the
• 0:46
  other nations with their human kings and decided they wanted to
• 0:49
  be like everyone else. First Samuel chapter 8 verse 6
• 0:53
  says it plainly. But the thing displeased Samuel.
• 0:56
  When they said give us a king to judge us.
• 1:00
  God's response? He didn't force them to choose
• 1:03
  differently. He warned them about what a king
• 1:05
  would cost them, their sons sent to war, their daughters taken
• 1:09
  for labor, their land and income taxed and claimed.
• 1:13
  He laid out the consequences clearly.
• 1:15
  And then in verse 22, he told Samuel, obey their voice and
• 1:19
  make them a king. That's a challenging verse.
• 1:23
  God gave them what they asked for, even though he knew it
• 1:26
  wasn't best. Why?
• 1:29
  Because he respects human choice.
• 1:31
  He doesn't force us to trust Him, but when we choose our way
• 1:34
  over His, we carry the weight of that decision.
• 1:38
  Proverbs chapter 17, verses 12 and 13 reinforce this idea.

  Foolish choices, especially the kind where we return evil for
• 1:47
  good or rush ahead without wisdom, can have consequences
• 1:51
  that last long beyond the moment.
• 1:54
  A foolish person who acts without understanding is
• 1:57
  dangerous not just to themselves, but to those around
• 2:00
  them. For us today, this might look
• 2:03
  different than demanding a king. It might be choosing a
• 2:06
  relationship because everyone else seems to be in one.
• 2:10
  It might be taking a shortcut that compromises your integrity.
• 2:14
  It might be pushing for decision before God's timing.
• 2:17
  We've all been there, wanting what we want right now, even if
• 2:21
  deep down we sense it's not quite right.
• 2:24
  The invitation in these passages is to pause to pray before you
• 2:29
  push. Samuel prayed before responding
• 2:31
  to Israel's request. David repeatedly inquired of the
• 2:35
  Lord before making major moves. There's a pattern.
• 2:38
  They're worth following. Seek God before you.
• 2:41
  Act not after. Your desires aren't bad.
• 2:45
  God gave you dreams and desires. But when those desires lead us
• 2:49
  away from His wisdom, they lead us away from His best and God's
• 2:53
  best, even when it looks slower or different than what we
• 2:56
  imagined, is always worth the wait.

  Let's pray. Heavenly Father, help us to
• 3:03
  trust Your plan even when we want things our way.
• 3:06
  Teach us to pray before we push, to wait before we act, and to
• 3:10
  choose Your wisdom over our impulses.
• 3:13
  Guard our hearts from decisions made in frustration, fear, or
• 3:17
  comparison. We believe Your plan is better
• 3:20
  than anything we could choose for ourselves.
• 3:22
  In Jesus name, Amen. When the battle feels personal,
• 3:28
  relentless, and too heavy to name, your prayers do not have
• 3:31

  Now make us a king to judge us, like all the nations.

  But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, give us a king

  to judge us. Samuel prayed to Yahweh.

  Yahweh said to Samuel, Listen to the voice of the people in all

  that they tell you, For they have not rejected you, but they
• 5:31
  have rejected Me as the king over them, according to all the
• 5:35
  works which they have done since the day that I brought them up
• 5:38
  out of Egypt, even to this day, in that they have forsaken Me
• 5:42
  and served other gods. So they also do to you.
• 5:46
  Now. Therefore listen to their voice.
• 5:49
  However, you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show
• 5:52
  them the way of the king who will reign over them.

  Samuel told all Yahweh's words to the people who asked him for
• 5:58
  a king. He said This will be the way of
• 6:01
  the king who shall reign over you.

  He will take your sons and appoint them as his servants for
• 6:06
  his Chariots and to be his horsemen, and they will run
• 6:10
  before his Chariots. He will appoint them to him for
• 6:14
  captains of thousands and captains of 50s, And he will
• 6:17
  assign some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to
• 6:21
  make his instruments of war and the instruments of his Chariots.

  He will take your daughters to be perfumers, to be cooks, and
• 6:29
  to be bakers. He will take your fields, your
• 6:32
  vineyards, and your olive Groves, even their best, and
• 6:35
  give them to his servants. He will take 110th of your seed

  and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his
• 6:42
  servants. He will take your male servants,

  your female servants, your best young men, and your donkeys and

  assign them to his own work. He will take 110th of your

  flocks, and you will be his servants.

  You will cry out in that day because of your king, whom you

  will have chosen for yourselves, and Yahweh will not answer you

  in that day. But the people refused to listen

  to the voice of Samuel, and they said, No, but we will have a

  king over us, that we also may be like all the nations, and

  that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our
• 7:17
  battles. Samuel heard all the words of
• 7:19
  the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Yahweh.

  Yahweh said to Samuel, Listen to their voice and make them a
• 7:26
  king. Samuel said to the men of
• 7:29
  Israel. Everyone go to your own city.
• 7:33
