- 0:07Speaker 1: This mediated podcast. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only
- 0:12Speaker 1: game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer
- 0:16Speaker 1: new Hearth, and today we're joined by Stephen Ranella, Brody Henderson,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Seth Morris, Hayden Samic Corey Caulkins, Marge Smith, Randall Williams,
- 0:24Speaker 1: Sam James, and Savannah Ashore A. Savannah, this is your
- 0:28Speaker 1: first time on the show, So tell folks what you
- 0:31Speaker 1: do here at meat Eater. I'm the director of Publishing
- 0:34Speaker 1: A Meat Eater and that means I work on our
- 0:36Speaker 1: print book projects as well as camp Fire Stories, our
- 0:39Speaker 1: audiobook series. How do you feel about your chances of
- 0:42Speaker 1: Meat Eater Trivia? Very very bad. I tried to get
- 0:45Speaker 1: out of this, Steve. You know Savannah, Well, how do
- 0:47Speaker 1: you think she's gonna do? Uh? First, I'll say that
- 0:50Speaker 1: when it comes to the book publishing, me and Brodi
- 0:53Speaker 1: and Savanna are like nuts on a dog. Three nutt
- 0:56Speaker 1: a dog. That's right, and you've added a four, right,
- 1:03Speaker 1: and we've grown a fourth. But about Meaty to Dandle,
- 1:07Speaker 1: how do you think she's going to do? Well? Here's
- 1:09Speaker 1: the deal, uh, Savannah. Admittedly, here's what makes Savannah a
- 1:15Speaker 1: great collaborative partner is she looks at everything with a
- 1:20Speaker 1: fresh eye. She's not biased by past knowledge. Savannah has
- 1:28Speaker 1: Steve told you this before. This is a beautiful way
- 1:32Speaker 1: of describing me. Um, she said, it's just in one ear.
- 1:35Speaker 1: It's the information comes in because she works on so
- 1:37Speaker 1: many books. That's what she's done her whole career. It
- 1:40Speaker 1: comes in, there's no place for it to live. It
- 1:45Speaker 1: gets worked on, and then it leaves. Not like, that's
- 1:48Speaker 1: not the way you hunt, dear, it would. It would
- 1:51Speaker 1: drag me down to have to just store that information
- 1:54Speaker 1: she's done ghostwriting for in her past publishing. There's no
- 1:58Speaker 1: room for it all. Just be clear, this is a
- 2:00Speaker 1: compliment you're giving her. That's a She's able to very
- 2:06Speaker 1: quickly immerse herself into a world, look at it from
- 2:11Speaker 1: the perspective of a non insider, find out what makes sense,
- 2:15Speaker 1: what works, what needs better explanation, and then a vacuum
- 2:21Speaker 1: apparatus of some sort. The vacuum. The vacuum is my brain.
- 2:29Speaker 1: But she's worked on so much mediator stuff. There's a
- 2:33Speaker 1: chance some of it may be back there in the
- 2:36Speaker 1: back of her head, may have trapped some information. But
- 2:43Speaker 1: I'm mostly saying that because this is what Savannah was saying.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I had to basically begged her to come down here,
- 2:49Speaker 1: and I had sort of got her to come down
- 2:51Speaker 1: under the idea that she would be on my team.
- 2:54Speaker 1: But that idea wasn't down immediately by Hayden bro He said,
- 3:01Speaker 1: I keep thinking, like, I'm gonna come down here, and
- 3:04Speaker 1: I don't know, Brody will have like you know, like
- 3:06Speaker 1: you'll hit like your pension. I don't know what happened,
- 3:09Speaker 1: like you get a certain age. I mean like like
- 3:12Speaker 1: like I don't know if bro retired, not yet. He's
- 3:16Speaker 1: got your man. He's got like a gold watch and ship.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I don't know. But every time I come down, you're like,
- 3:20Speaker 1: there he is sitting there. Yeah, same place. Now. It's
- 3:24Speaker 1: not didn't retire. It's not lost on me, Steve. That
- 3:27Speaker 1: you've got like the whole book publishing team in town.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Does that mean something? You got anything to share? Yeah,
- 3:32Speaker 1: it's kind of a Yeah. We got a lot of projects,
- 3:35Speaker 1: so we got a new we got a new title
- 3:36Speaker 1: coming out. We have an activity for a great activity book.
- 3:40Speaker 1: It's like an activity book, but it's an educational manual.
- 3:43Speaker 1: If you want, if you wish your kids knew all
- 3:46Speaker 1: the ship. You don't know you'd get him this book.
- 3:49Speaker 1: So just for kids and adults. No, it's for it's
- 3:51Speaker 1: for a wide swath of kids. Catch Crayfish, Count Stars.
- 3:57Speaker 1: When does that come out? Oh, when does it come out?
- 4:00Speaker 1: With it very same June June of next year. It's
- 4:04Speaker 1: from June of this year. So I have my kids
- 4:08Speaker 1: are eight, ten, and twelve. It's very appropriate for all
- 4:11Speaker 1: of my kids, be appropriate for kids a bit younger,
- 4:14Speaker 1: and my twelve year old definitely hasn't aged out of it.
- 4:17Speaker 1: But it's like it's the whole world put into these
- 4:22Speaker 1: things that like activities they can do. Some you know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: if you're not careful, your kid might cut his finger
- 4:28Speaker 1: off or something, so you gotta be you gotta exercise caution.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Something they can do on their own. Some they'll need
- 4:33Speaker 1: some help with. We loaded it with all of the
- 4:36Speaker 1: requisite warnings. Um. But if you want your kid to
- 4:41Speaker 1: understand the planet in their place in it and like
- 4:43Speaker 1: what's going on around them, Um, this is a book
- 4:47Speaker 1: you ought to buy form love it. Is it safe
- 4:50Speaker 1: to assume that there is always a book in the works,
- 4:53Speaker 1: multiple titles, always in the work, So like this, this
- 4:56Speaker 1: one that's coming out the Kids Activity book. How long
- 4:57Speaker 1: has that been in the works? Look in years? I
- 5:00Speaker 1: don't know. I'm joking, but I mean we started working
- 5:04Speaker 1: on it a year and a half ago. As soon
- 5:06Speaker 1: as we finished the Wilderness Skills Book, we got into
- 5:08Speaker 1: this one, and then we got more. We were doing
- 5:11Speaker 1: like we're doing, uh, Sportsman's Atlas of America. So if
- 5:19Speaker 1: you wanted to be like, where exactly did Hugh Glass
- 5:21Speaker 1: get killed? Um, it would point you to that place
- 5:27Speaker 1: and it would tell you what it looks like, what
- 5:29Speaker 1: went on there. How you can go to probably the
- 5:31Speaker 1: closest known spot to be like, where did Hugh Like,
- 5:35Speaker 1: where did Hugh Glass get mauled by a grizzly bear?
- 5:39Speaker 1: It'll help you pinpoint as close as possibly know. Where
- 5:42Speaker 1: was Daniel Boone's first son killed? Where was Daniel Boone's
- 5:45Speaker 1: second son killed? Um? And another ship too, not just
- 5:49Speaker 1: not just old people like that. I'm just throwing that
- 5:52Speaker 1: on as an example. And we're doing a thing um
- 5:55Speaker 1: and and Randall's working on this right now. We're working
- 5:58Speaker 1: on audio original that will be a complete the story
- 6:04Speaker 1: and explanation of the Long Hunters and Mountain Men and
- 6:08Speaker 1: all the market factors what they did, like the real
- 6:11Speaker 1: ship you want to know? Yeah, I forgot about the cookbook.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, it's a lot of words. Cookbook. We're
- 6:19Speaker 1: finishing an outdoor cookbook right now. It's like a follow
- 6:22Speaker 1: up to the Fishing Game, complete guide or not a
- 6:25Speaker 1: complete guy? What hell's that book called the Mediator Cookbook?
- 6:28Speaker 1: The follow up to the mediaor cookbook. That's our best
- 6:33Speaker 1: selling title ever. Are any more of these releases in No, No,
- 6:40Speaker 1: just one and then one more cookbook, the Daniel Pruett
- 6:45Speaker 1: Wild and Home that's being finished up right now. So
- 6:49Speaker 1: many books Steve can't even remember them all well. And
- 6:51Speaker 1: then uh, it would just so people understand the If
- 6:55Speaker 1: you like the Close Calls series, the audio original the
- 6:58Speaker 1: Media's Close Calls that was that was Savannah's project. It's great,
- 7:03Speaker 1: but all that information went over head and there's a
- 7:06Speaker 1: volume three in the work that's true. Wow, now, Savannah.
- 7:09Speaker 1: If you're not familiar, this is a ten round quiz
- 7:12Speaker 1: show with questions from meat eaters four verticals which are hunting, fishing,
- 7:16Speaker 1: conservation and cooking, and there's a prize. Meat eater will
- 7:19Speaker 1: donate five hundred dollars to the conservation organization of the
- 7:23Speaker 1: winners choosing in each week here on Trivia, we reveal
- 7:26Speaker 1: a new stat this week. We're looking at Steve and
- 7:30Speaker 1: Brodie's performances when the other isn't playing this now, because
- 7:35Speaker 1: the last time I was here it was like it
- 7:36Speaker 1: was like an observation of his was Now Brodie has
- 7:41Speaker 1: accused Steve of racking up winds when Brodie isn't here,
- 7:44Speaker 1: and Steve has accused Brodie of racking up wins when
- 7:48Speaker 1: Steve isn't here. Well, now we're going to get to
- 7:50Speaker 1: the bottom of this. When Steve has played without Brody,
- 7:53Speaker 1: he has won eight of ten times. When Brody has
- 7:57Speaker 1: played without Steve, he has won four of eight times.
- 8:00Speaker 1: So sixty seven percent if Steve's Meat Eater Trivia victories
- 8:04Speaker 1: have happened without Brodie playing, and thirty three percent of
- 8:07Speaker 1: Brodie's victories have happened without Steve playing. He really is
- 8:11Speaker 1: better than this is the advanced metrics revolutionary. That's right.
- 8:16Speaker 1: That means that Steve's winning percentage when Brodie isn't here
- 8:20Speaker 1: is eighty percent, and his winning percentage when Brodie is
- 8:23Speaker 1: here is Brodie's winning again, You're winning percentage without Brody
- 8:30Speaker 1: is really your winning percentage with Brodie Brodie's Brodie's winning
- 8:38Speaker 1: percentage when Steve isn't here is fifty percent, and his
- 8:42Speaker 1: winning percentage when Steve is here is hum This to
- 8:48Speaker 1: me one of the things you may not recognize. It
- 8:50Speaker 1: sounds like Brodie needs Steve to be here to like
- 8:53Speaker 1: sort of amping mom. Yeah, because he's like plus the
- 8:59Speaker 1: fun like beat Schuster. Meanwhile, Steve, Steve gets hiped up
- 9:07Speaker 1: when Brody isn't here, and that's when he has his
- 9:09Speaker 1: a game. Oh dude, when Brody's here, I'm paying way
- 9:12Speaker 1: more attention. Yeah, yeah, we have some housekeeping to get
- 9:17Speaker 1: to you before we play. On last week's episode, we
- 9:20Speaker 1: heard from a linguist on why Colorado is not only
- 9:23Speaker 1: an acceptable pronunciation but also the preferred one among locals.
- 9:27Speaker 1: But Steve said that he will side with whatever John
- 9:30Speaker 1: Denver says. So I went through Denver's entire discography and
- 9:35Speaker 1: found seven different songs where Colorado is in the lyrics.
- 9:38Speaker 1: He really was on the heels on like the payroll
- 9:42Speaker 1: Stake promotion. Those songs are I guess I'd rather be
- 9:46Speaker 1: in Colorado Christmas like a lullaby whispering Jesse the Harder
- 9:51Speaker 1: they Fall, Durango Mountain, Caballero, The Blizzard, and Steve's favorite
- 9:56Speaker 1: sing along, Rocky Mountain High play the Clinton Phil I've
- 10:07Speaker 1: seen it, five Statto star softer Rocky. Yeah, you need
- 10:31Speaker 1: to hear Chester cover that. Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I could feel good about that now. And most people
- 10:39Speaker 1: live there live there because of the the Johnny Denver, Okay,
- 10:42Speaker 1: that's a good stat like that, most stats. Now. In
- 10:45Speaker 1: all seven of Denver songs that mentioned Colorado, he sings
- 10:50Speaker 1: Rotto instead of Ratto. I couldn't even find one instance
- 10:54Speaker 1: of Denver using the local pronunciation. But there's a reason
- 10:58Speaker 1: for that. John Denver isn't a Colorado native. Denver, who
- 11:02Speaker 1: was born as Henry John Deutstendorf, was raised in Arizona.
- 11:10Speaker 1: He went to college in Texas, then moved to Los Angeles,
- 11:13Speaker 1: and then moved to Minnesota. It wasn't until he was
- 11:16Speaker 1: nearly thirty years old when he moved to Aspen, where
- 11:19Speaker 1: he lived from nineteen seventy to nine seven. So when
- 11:22Speaker 1: he wrote Rocky Mountain High in nineteen seventy two, he
- 11:26Speaker 1: had only been a Colorado resident for two years. So, Steve,
- 11:29Speaker 1: does that change your stance at all on John Denver
- 11:32Speaker 1: being the authority. Okay, uh, what was John Wayne's last name?
- 11:37Speaker 1: Was John Wayne? Like? His real name is Marion. I
- 11:42Speaker 1: don't know. I guess I'm the one guy with a computer,
- 11:50Speaker 1: Marian Robert Morrison. John Wayne's was like, yeah, so you're
- 11:55Speaker 1: sticking with Rotto. Okay. The Shelby index for this round
- 12:00Speaker 1: is a force who are winner? Should get eight correct answers,
- 12:03Speaker 1: and with that we're onto the game of trivia. Play
- 12:05Speaker 1: the drop, Phil, Look, I need to know what I
- 12:10Speaker 1: stand wind everything? How's that just tend to win everything?
- 12:22Speaker 1: Damon suckers. Question one the topic is public lands, and
- 12:27Speaker 1: as always, this will be multiple choice. Which of these
- 12:31Speaker 1: animals is not found in Yellowstone National Park? Is it
- 12:36Speaker 1: garter snakes, wolverines, pelicans, or large mouth bass? Which of
- 12:43Speaker 1: these animals is not found in yellow Stone National Park?
- 12:48Speaker 1: Is it garter snakes, wolverines, pelicans, or large mouth bass? Savannah?
- 12:57Speaker 1: Just to be clear, there is one right answer, not
- 12:59Speaker 1: multiple One right answer in this bunch. Garter snakes, wolverines,
- 13:04Speaker 1: pelicans or large mouth bass. Everybody have an answer? Right?
- 13:10Speaker 1: Everybody have an answer? Okay, Gardner snakes, wolverines, pelicans, large
- 13:16Speaker 1: mouth bass. Remember everyone, Hayden was an emerging threat. What
- 13:20Speaker 1: do you call a declining threat? You, Eddie Hayden, Go
- 13:26Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying large
- 13:29Speaker 1: mouth bass, Savannah saying pelicans, Hayden saying wolverines sang large
- 13:35Speaker 1: mouth bass, Sam saying large mouth bass. Marge and Corey
- 13:39Speaker 1: and randall it wrong, Seth saying large mouth bass. Bears.
- 13:45Speaker 1: He just real bass. They need to be real worried
- 13:46Speaker 1: about smallmouth these days. The correct answer is large mouth bass.
- 13:50Speaker 1: You want to tell me, you want me to tell
- 13:52Speaker 1: you a stat that will chill blow your mind. It's
- 13:54Speaker 1: here in these ponds here about town. Huh. Anything that
- 13:59Speaker 1: has anything besides a rainbow or a cut was illegally introduced.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Fish and game has never done perch, never done largemouth bass,
- 14:08Speaker 1: never done bluegill. It's all bucket biology. They've never done
- 14:12Speaker 1: or done goldfish. They've never done it. I thought at
- 14:14Speaker 1: some point they were doing perch. They've never done perch.
- 14:18Speaker 1: When it gets when they find small mouth, that's the threshold,
- 14:23Speaker 1: then they knut the waterway. But they'll they'll talk like
- 14:27Speaker 1: I guess somehow they'll tolerate the perch and stuff. But
- 14:29Speaker 1: if you went down and threw a small mouth into
- 14:31Speaker 1: the pond down the road here, they get mad. They're
- 14:34Speaker 1: gonna nu it. Gardener snakes are considered the most common
- 14:38Speaker 1: reptile in yellow Stone Pelicans regularly nest in the southern
- 14:42Speaker 1: arm of yellow Stone Lake, and it's thought that there
- 14:45Speaker 1: are about a dozen wolverines in the park, with the
- 14:47Speaker 1: last sighting happening in March of Large mouth bass are
- 14:52Speaker 1: not found there, but smallmouth bass are threatening to make
- 14:55Speaker 1: an appearance. The park has a strict catch and kill
- 14:58Speaker 1: policy for any small mall caught within its boundaries. Question
- 15:03Speaker 1: to the topic is anthropology. Roughly one thousand years ago,
- 15:08Speaker 1: Native Americans invented America's oldest team sport that used balls
- 15:13Speaker 1: made of deer hide. What is that sport? Roughly one
- 15:20Speaker 1: thousand years ago, Native Americans invented America's oldest team sport
- 15:26Speaker 1: that used balls made of deer hide? What is that sport?
- 15:31Speaker 1: You think? Quick answers from Steve Hayden, Seth Randall, Sam
- 15:40Speaker 1: Brody's still thinking sports ball faltering. Listen man, Remember how
- 15:47Speaker 1: I was ahead of you, and then I was behind you,
- 15:50Speaker 1: and then I was ahead of you last time, and
- 15:51Speaker 1: then you were ahead. I'm not worried one more time. Here.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Roughly one thousand years ago, Native Americans invented America's oldest
- 15:58Speaker 1: team sport that used balls made of deer hide. What
- 16:03Speaker 1: is that Sportez was just a little kid. Does everybody
- 16:09Speaker 1: have an answer? Margie good? Oh, I showed mine on
- 16:14Speaker 1: an accident. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 16:17Speaker 1: Steve saying lacrosse, Savannah. You gotta pick one Savannah, croquet
- 16:21Speaker 1: or football. Which one is it? Okay, Hayden sang lacrosse,
- 16:26Speaker 1: Brody saying baseball, Sam sang lacrosse, March saying handball, Corey
- 16:30Speaker 1: sang Polo Randall, and Seth saying lacrosse. They got it.
- 16:35Speaker 1: The correct answer is lacrosse. It's kind of like. Early
- 16:41Speaker 1: versions of the game featured matches that could last for days,
- 16:45Speaker 1: with hundreds of men on fields that were miles wide.
- 16:48Speaker 1: For equipment, these sticks were made of wood, the balls
- 16:51Speaker 1: were made of deer hide, and the nets were made
- 16:53Speaker 1: of deer sinew. Oral tradition site that the first ever
- 16:57Speaker 1: lacrosse game was played between Birds and ma'ms man my
- 17:03Speaker 1: wife for Christmas got us this little it's like a
- 17:06Speaker 1: net that you can turn your kitchen table into a
- 17:09Speaker 1: ping pong table. I'm obsessed, man, Really, my kids played
- 17:12Speaker 1: every night. Really does it just stay on there for days?
- 17:15Speaker 1: Sometimes beat everybody. You get it off so fast. I
- 17:20Speaker 1: like it because I just win. It's great. I beat
- 17:22Speaker 1: my wife, I beat all my kids. You know. I
- 17:24Speaker 1: want to rephrase that office two point oh that opens
- 17:31Speaker 1: this year is gonna have a ping pong table so
- 17:33Speaker 1: we'll be able to test these claims. I had one
- 17:36Speaker 1: for years in my garage, and I gave it to
- 17:38Speaker 1: the company, so it should show up in the new office.
- 17:41Speaker 1: I'm kicking around. I can't decide. I'm kicking around, Like,
- 17:44Speaker 1: at what point you should buy like a really nice paddle, Yeah,
- 17:48Speaker 1: you should. You should make a difference for sure. Yeah.
- 17:51Speaker 1: And the panels have ratings on them like control and
- 17:55Speaker 1: spin and speed and stuff like that. That's not where
- 17:58Speaker 1: at What want to say is like that you hit
- 18:00Speaker 1: it more often? He wants one, that says big Steve
- 18:06Speaker 1: on the paddle Question three. The topic is woodsmanship. This
- 18:10Speaker 1: is our on X listener Question of the Week, which
- 18:13Speaker 1: was won by Logan Stes for sending this great question.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Logan is going to get a one year premium subscription
- 18:19Speaker 1: to on X. If you want a chance to win
- 18:21Speaker 1: our listener question of the Week, then send it to
- 18:23Speaker 1: trivia at the meat eator dot com. This plant, which
- 18:27Speaker 1: combines the name of a mammal with the name of
- 18:30Speaker 1: a vegetable is said to smell like rotting meat. What
- 18:34Speaker 1: is it? This plant, which combines the name of a
- 18:40Speaker 1: mammal with the name of a vegetable is said to
- 18:43Speaker 1: smell like rotting meat. What is it? Quick answer the
- 18:47Speaker 1: category Woodsman Ship Quick answers from Steve and Set and Hayden.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Sethe this, I wouldn't say a hunter we're saying, but
- 19:00Speaker 1: I feel pretty good about it. Broke he just looked
- 19:03Speaker 1: him down there. Man, listen the heckling. I don't do
- 19:08Speaker 1: it to you, but I'm gonna start. I'm quitting you.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Guys can trade sides to you. Brody can heckle, and
- 19:17Speaker 1: you can be silent. It gets in my head and
- 19:20Speaker 1: then I can't think it's unfair. Go ahead, I feel good.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Does everyone else say an answer? Go ahead and reveal
- 19:30Speaker 1: your answers. We have Steve saying skunk cabbage, Savannah sang
- 19:34Speaker 1: dogwood Hayden sang skunk cabbage, Brody without an answer, Sam
- 19:38Speaker 1: saying skunk cabbage, March sang corpse flower, Randall sang skunk cabbage,
- 19:47Speaker 1: and Seth saying skunk cabbage. They got it. The correct
- 19:50Speaker 1: answer is skunk cabbage. I never got the dead the
- 19:56Speaker 1: corpse thing from it. Well, the corpse thing kind of
- 19:59Speaker 1: through me offa my board. Skunk gabbage has the unique
- 20:08Speaker 1: ability to generate heat and melt snow, which allows it
- 20:12Speaker 1: to emerge in early spring. This warm air helps carry
- 20:15Speaker 1: the plants foul odor and attract pollinators. Eastern skunk cabbage
- 20:19Speaker 1: is fround from Canada to Tennessee, and Western skunk cabbage
- 20:23Speaker 1: ranges from Alaska to California. Bears will dig that out
- 20:26Speaker 1: and need it. What it's your own? Question for? The
- 20:30Speaker 1: topic is cooking? What does m R E stand for?
- 20:38Speaker 1: Quick answers from everyone in the room. This maybe a
- 20:41Speaker 1: one right question again, topic is cooking? What does m
- 20:48Speaker 1: R E stand for? Working on perfect game? Over there? Huh?
- 20:56Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Okay, Hayden, you might be
- 21:01Speaker 1: the only one. Okay, a couple of a couple of folks.
- 21:06Speaker 1: What does m R E? Brody at least you're not
- 21:09Speaker 1: getting heckled by the host. Now I can take the heckling.
- 21:14Speaker 1: I quit, dude, I'm going back to being the silent killer.
- 21:19Speaker 1: He ain't gonna get it. Okay, Maggie, you good. Go
- 21:25Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying meals
- 21:29Speaker 1: ready to eat, Savannah saying meal ready to eat, Brody
- 21:32Speaker 1: without an answer. I'm sorry, Hayden without an answer, Defense
- 21:38Speaker 1: Sam saying meal is ready to eat, Corey and Marge
- 21:42Speaker 1: without an answer, Randall saying meal ready to eat. Seth
- 21:45Speaker 1: saying made ready to eat. The correct answer is meals
- 21:50Speaker 1: ready to eat. So I'm the only one that got it.
- 21:52Speaker 1: I got it, I got it. The plural isn't important
- 21:56Speaker 1: if you got meal or meals. I'm not going to
- 21:58Speaker 1: give it to Seth though, who said aid ready to eat.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Although the Department of the Defense began developing m R
- 22:08Speaker 1: s in nineteen sixty three, they weren't issued to soldiers
- 22:11Speaker 1: until nineteen eighty one. Early iterations of m R e
- 22:15Speaker 1: s were so unpalatable that soldiers created their own version
- 22:18Speaker 1: of the acronym. Meals rejected by everyone. Others complained about
- 22:23Speaker 1: the constipation they caused. Which inspired another nickname Meals requiring enemas.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Question five, the topic is woodsmanship. This next great question
- 22:35Speaker 1: comes to us via Jarry Jacobs. If you have a
- 22:37Speaker 1: question you think is right for meata to trivia, you
- 22:40Speaker 1: can send it to trivia at the meat Eator dot com.
- 22:43Speaker 1: According to doll Bear's law, you can determine air temperature
- 22:48Speaker 1: by counting the number of these in fifteen seconds. What
- 22:53Speaker 1: was the category again, woodsman ship? According to doll Bears law,
- 22:58Speaker 1: you can determine air to temperature by counting the number
- 23:01Speaker 1: of these in fifteen seconds. We stumped the room with
- 23:07Speaker 1: this question. Doll Bears Law not giving any hints. You
- 23:14Speaker 1: can determine air temperature by counting the number of these
- 23:18Speaker 1: in fifteen seconds? Is anybody coming up with an answer?
- 23:23Speaker 1: And he guesses I kind of know it, but I
- 23:26Speaker 1: kind of don't. Okay, Stephen Brodie have yet to write
- 23:30Speaker 1: anything down written. Do you know it? No? Oh, I
- 23:34Speaker 1: do know it, Hayden knows it? Nobody? Look, Steve, how's
- 23:40Speaker 1: it going over here? Just not good? This is gonna
- 23:43Speaker 1: be a saving grace. I was on a perfect game, buddy,
- 23:48Speaker 1: until question five, which is according to doll Bear's law,
- 23:52Speaker 1: you can determine air temperature by counting the number of
- 23:54Speaker 1: these in fifteen seconds. Are you gonna come up with anything?
- 23:59Speaker 1: I don't think so. I mean give me all day.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I might. Is everyone else who is going to come
- 24:04Speaker 1: up with an answer have an answer? I mean I'll
- 24:07Speaker 1: throw up something out there. But Brody odds, are you
- 24:11Speaker 1: got this one right? Oh? Like ten percent? Yeah, go
- 24:15Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve without an answer.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Savannah saying birds, Hayden saying cricket chirps, Brody sang echoes,
- 24:24Speaker 1: Sam saying ice crystals, March saying birds, Corey sang thermometers,
- 24:29Speaker 1: Randall sang snowflakes, Seth saying clouds. We have a correct
- 24:35Speaker 1: answer in the room. It's cricket chirps. It's so stupid.
- 24:39Speaker 1: He didn't got it. How could you determine? Its stupid? Yeah,
- 24:43Speaker 1: this law was formulated by Amos. I think, yeah, that's
- 24:52Speaker 1: not what Spencer shore doesn't work. I thought, no, great question,
- 24:57Speaker 1: No way, I'll called dog durn right now. I'm telling
- 25:00Speaker 1: you it's Dolbears law. And we just came past two
- 25:03Speaker 1: minutes and just do a new question. Now, this law
- 25:05Speaker 1: is stup Dolbear in For the most part, his claim
- 25:11Speaker 1: has proven to be fairly accurate. It's believed his spirits
- 25:15Speaker 1: that we're done with snowy tree crickets, but other types
- 25:18Speaker 1: of crickets work as well. If you're solving for fahrenheit,
- 25:22Speaker 1: then you count the chirps in fifteen seconds and add forty.
- 25:25Speaker 1: If you're solving for celsius, then you count the chirps
- 25:28Speaker 1: in eight seconds and add five. Heart of questions, I
- 25:34Speaker 1: never said it's right. What's what's the law that spot
- 25:37Speaker 1: animal size with latitude? That's not principle. That's not always
- 25:42Speaker 1: accurate either, but it's still a question principle. And this
- 25:46Speaker 1: is a legitimate law. I thought it was. Really how
- 25:48Speaker 1: can it be legitimate if you're trying to take the
- 25:51Speaker 1: air temperature in Antarctica or here right now, or most anywhere.
- 25:56Speaker 1: You guys are getting too mad about the accuracy of it.
- 25:59Speaker 1: It's Dolbear law, dold Bears law. You can argue with
- 26:02Speaker 1: him who died in seven It's just like the Bergman's principle.
- 26:07Speaker 1: I'm gonna get his bone. I'm gonna dig his bones
- 26:09Speaker 1: out in urinat of phil we are halfway through the game.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Give us A scoreboard update. Who got it right? Anyway? Yeah,
- 26:20Speaker 1: how did you know that? Dold bears law. I'm surprised
- 26:23Speaker 1: it's actually not in your kids a kid's activity something
- 26:28Speaker 1: like I said clearly earlier that you do want your kids. Yeah, Phil, scoreboard.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Everyone is on the board. We've got Savannah, Maggie and
- 26:38Speaker 1: Corey with one point of peace, Brodie Henderson with two points,
- 26:43Speaker 1: Seth and Hayden with three, and then we've got a
- 26:46Speaker 1: three way tie in first place between Steve, Sam and
- 26:49Speaker 1: Randall who have four being pretty quiet about how well
- 26:54Speaker 1: they're doing. Randall's gonna win. I mean, I've been dreaming
- 27:01Speaker 1: of this my whole life. Now, Steve, this summer, maybe
- 27:05Speaker 1: when you hear some crickets, go and do this experiment
- 27:07Speaker 1: and see how accurate it is. What if you just
- 27:11Speaker 1: buy some crickets and bring them with you where you go?
- 27:14Speaker 1: Gecko cage. That means about question six. The topic is hunting.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Named two of the top five states in America that
- 27:34Speaker 1: killed the most geese? What kind of all geese? This
- 27:39Speaker 1: classifies all geese via the US Fish and Wildlife Service
- 27:42Speaker 1: named two of the top five states in America that
- 27:47Speaker 1: killed the most geese Savannah. This is probably the furthest
- 27:52Speaker 1: removed from your wheelhouse. What do you think the odds
- 27:55Speaker 1: are that you're gonna get this one? Right? Zero? Zero? Okay,
- 28:00Speaker 1: but I confidently wrote a couple of states. You got
- 28:02Speaker 1: two states? Right now? Does everybody else have an answer?
- 28:08Speaker 1: Looking for two of the top five states in America
- 28:12Speaker 1: that kill the most geese. Steve you good? No, everybody
- 28:20Speaker 1: ready and reveal your name? You have, Steve saying North Dakota,
- 28:24Speaker 1: South Dakota. Would you cross out Texas? Savannah sang Florida, Arkansas,
- 28:29Speaker 1: heyd He sang South Dakota, Kansas, Brodi sang Maryland, Iowa,
- 28:34Speaker 1: Sam saying Wyoming, Nebraska, Marge sang Wisconsin, North Dakota, Corey
- 28:39Speaker 1: sang Louisiana, Alabama, Randall saying South Dakota, Minnesota, Seth saying
- 28:44Speaker 1: South Dakota, North Dakota. The top five states are Texas, Minnesota, California, Maryland,
- 28:51Speaker 1: and North Dakota. I don't I don't think anybody got
- 28:58Speaker 1: two of them. Most folks got one stated Steep crossed
- 29:03Speaker 1: out Texas. Most folks got one state, but not California.
- 29:09Speaker 1: I don't think. So Texas leads the country in goose harvest,
- 29:13Speaker 1: and they're followed by Minnesota in second, Californian third, Maryland
- 29:17Speaker 1: and fourth, and North Dakota in fifth. In Texas, the
- 29:20Speaker 1: average hunter kills five geese in three days of field.
- 29:24Speaker 1: The state also has the top five counties in America
- 29:28Speaker 1: that killed the most geese, with most of them being
- 29:30Speaker 1: located on the Gulf. Question seven, the topic is gear.
- 29:36Speaker 1: This next great question comes to us via Douglas car.
- 29:39Speaker 1: If you have a question you think is right for
- 29:41Speaker 1: Meat Eater Trivia, you can send it to trivia at
- 29:44Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com. Hunter's Specialties declared this tool,
- 29:49Speaker 1: which is used to remove a deer's anal canal, the
- 29:53Speaker 1: best invention since the knife. Hunters Specialties declared the this tool,
- 30:01Speaker 1: which is used to remove a deer's anal canal, the
- 30:04Speaker 1: best invention since the knife. Use one of these, no,
- 30:11Speaker 1: but I like imagining how with theoretically works. I got
- 30:15Speaker 1: one a joke. I got one as a joke one time,
- 30:18Speaker 1: some very confident answers in the room. I drew a
- 30:22Speaker 1: picture of it. You also need to have what it's
- 30:29Speaker 1: called for the room. I can't think of it. Hunts
- 30:34Speaker 1: Steven show up a second I'm gonna be a stickler
- 30:42Speaker 1: on this one with the answer, you big mouth billy bass.
- 30:45Speaker 1: I let a lot slide, but this one you need
- 30:48Speaker 1: to have the exact name. Hunter's Specialties declared this tool,
- 30:53Speaker 1: which is used to remove a deer's anal canal, the
- 30:57Speaker 1: best invention since the knife. Steve, do you have anything
- 31:03Speaker 1: written down? One word? Okay? Not the not the oh?
- 31:11Speaker 1: How the mighty have fallen? Dude? If I had just
- 31:15Speaker 1: gotten that last one, it wouldn't matter that I can't
- 31:17Speaker 1: get this one. Uh I phone me and I know
- 31:20Speaker 1: what you're talking about. I'll draw it for you. It
- 31:22Speaker 1: sounds like a few folks have got Brody pointing to
- 31:26Speaker 1: his watch, which is directed at Steve. Does everybody else
- 31:31Speaker 1: have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 31:36Speaker 1: have Steve saying wreckt um rener, Savannah saying crossed out.
- 31:44Speaker 1: He crossed out, but Savannah sang the anal scoop with
- 31:49Speaker 1: a little TM logo. Hayden sang but out, and he
- 31:55Speaker 1: drew um a popular graffiti. You can use your imagination.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Brodie writing butt out, Sam saying corkscrew, Marge without an answer,
- 32:08Speaker 1: Corey saying butt hole extracted Randall and Seth saying but
- 32:15Speaker 1: out they got it. The correct answer is butt out.
- 32:22Speaker 1: The butt out tool has been on the market for
- 32:24Speaker 1: about fifteen years. The plug was designed to keep hunters
- 32:28Speaker 1: from splitting the pelvic bone or puncturing the bladder. Although
- 32:31Speaker 1: it's often given as a gag gift, the three thousand
- 32:34Speaker 1: Amazon reviews for an average of four point seven stars,
- 32:38Speaker 1: speaks for itself. Brody, have you used the tool that
- 32:42Speaker 1: you got as a gag gift? Okay? You think you ever? Will? Imagine?
- 32:46Speaker 1: They're not real popular on this side of the Missouri River.
- 32:50Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know anyone's ever used one. Question eight,
- 32:54Speaker 1: the topic is fishing. What type of shark is responsible
- 32:59Speaker 1: for the second most attacks worldwide? What type of shark
- 33:05Speaker 1: is responsible for the second most attacks worldwide? Not looking
- 33:11Speaker 1: for first, looking for second? Brody, you got this one
- 33:17Speaker 1: pretty quick answer. No, I feel like this one could
- 33:19Speaker 1: be some kind of trick question. That's what I'm thinking, dude.
- 33:22Speaker 1: I'm telling you don't. Don't anticipate them being trick questions.
- 33:25Speaker 1: It is worked very poorly for me. This is question eight.
- 33:31Speaker 1: We will get a scoreboard update from Phill the engineer
- 33:34Speaker 1: after this does everybody have an answer looking for the
- 33:38Speaker 1: type of shark that's responsible for the second most attacks worldwide.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying
- 33:47Speaker 1: great white, Savannah is saying the less great white. Hayden
- 33:51Speaker 1: sang bull, Brodie sang tiger, Sam saying bull, Marge sang
- 33:58Speaker 1: blue shark, were He sang bull shark, Randall sang tiger shark,
- 34:04Speaker 1: Seth saying great white. The correct answer is tiger sharks.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Damn it. I wrote that down for a while. A
- 34:17Speaker 1: couple of folks in the room got it right. The
- 34:20Speaker 1: great white is first on the list with three hundred
- 34:24Speaker 1: fifty one attacks. Now I'm out of the game. The
- 34:26Speaker 1: tiger shark is second at one two and the bull
- 34:30Speaker 1: shark is third at one nineteen. The rankings for fatal
- 34:34Speaker 1: attacks are the same. Great whites are first at fifty nine,
- 34:38Speaker 1: tigers are second at thirty nine, and bulls are third
- 34:41Speaker 1: at twenty six. I thought for sure it was one
- 34:43Speaker 1: of them trick questions. It was gonna be like nurse
- 34:47Speaker 1: or some little shot in my outfit. We have two
- 34:51Speaker 1: questions left. Is Steve out of the game? Uh? Corey,
- 34:55Speaker 1: Maggie and Savannah are out of the game, okay, and
- 34:58Speaker 1: technically Steve, Seth, Sam Hayden, and Brody are still in
- 35:03Speaker 1: the game with four points apiece, but Randall Williams has
- 35:06Speaker 1: a two point lead. Really came on strong, Savannah, still
- 35:17Speaker 1: a probationary period. Question nine, The topic is biology. What
- 35:22Speaker 1: type of biologists studies reptiles and amphibians? What type of
- 35:29Speaker 1: biologists studies reptiles and amphibians? This will do nothing, This
- 35:34Speaker 1: will do nothing to change the relative scores. Doesn't look
- 35:37Speaker 1: like Randall is gonna get this one wrong. He's gonna
- 35:40Speaker 1: coast to an easy victim. You almost had me. I
- 35:43Speaker 1: thought you're gonna say, doesn't look like Randa's gonna get
- 35:45Speaker 1: this one right? Can I change it? Still? Again? What
- 35:49Speaker 1: type of biologists studies reptiles and amphibians? Hoping for a
- 35:54Speaker 1: couple that, like only I would know? Does everybody have
- 35:58Speaker 1: an answer? I feel like I'm being specific, but a campaign,
- 36:03Speaker 1: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying
- 36:06Speaker 1: her petologists, Savannah sang reptology, repetologist, herpetologist, Bertie saying herpetologist,
- 36:17Speaker 1: Sam without an answer, Marge without an answer, Corey sang neutologist,
- 36:21Speaker 1: Randall sang herpetologists, and Seth saying herpetologists, they got it.
- 36:26Speaker 1: The correct answer is herpetologist. Some of the world's most
- 36:30Speaker 1: famous herpetologists include Jeff Corwin and Steve Irwin, who are
- 36:34Speaker 1: considered herpetological showman. The average salary for herpetologist in America
- 36:41Speaker 1: is sixty seven thousand dollars. Phil, we have one question left.
- 36:45Speaker 1: What does the scoreboard look like? The scoreboard looks like
- 36:48Speaker 1: Randall Williams is our winner already already question dude doesn't
- 36:54Speaker 1: even need the like the showdown, kneel on the ball here,
- 36:58Speaker 1: and what is his score? With one question? He has
- 37:02Speaker 1: seven points? Seven points? Brody Hayden, Seth and Steve Randall,
- 37:08Speaker 1: you're now chasing the Shelby Index. If you get this
- 37:10Speaker 1: one right, you will have hit it. Question ten, the
- 37:13Speaker 1: topic is public land. This next great question comes to
- 37:17Speaker 1: us via John Honeycut. If you have a question you
- 37:19Speaker 1: think is right for meatat to Trivia, you can send
- 37:22Speaker 1: it to Trivia at the meatator dot com. What word
- 37:26Speaker 1: describes a man made stack of rocks that sometimes used
- 37:30Speaker 1: to mark trails or graves. Spelling is important, Spelling is
- 37:36Speaker 1: never important. What word describes a man made stack of
- 37:41Speaker 1: rocks that sometimes used to mark trails or graves. Randall,
- 37:46Speaker 1: you're gonna get this one right. Yes, it's another layoff
- 37:49Speaker 1: that doesn't do anything to change the road. It's like
- 37:51Speaker 1: you gave Randle like a bunch of questions that I
- 37:55Speaker 1: had new but erased. I was saying, and this is
- 38:01Speaker 1: the minute he got to lead. It's all just I
- 38:03Speaker 1: was fully on board. I was fully on board with
- 38:05Speaker 1: all the complaining when we were talking about the crickets.
- 38:07Speaker 1: But I feel like at this point we just kind
- 38:10Speaker 1: of need to move on right one more time. What
- 38:14Speaker 1: word describes a man made stack of rocks that sometimes
- 38:17Speaker 1: used to mark trails or graves. Does everybody have an answer?
- 38:22Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying Karen,
- 38:26Speaker 1: Savannah saying gravehead, Hayden saying Karen. That spelling is so
- 38:32Speaker 1: far you know now he slowly he's saying Karen, Sam
- 38:46Speaker 1: saying Karen, Marge saying Karen, uh, Corey, and Randall and
- 38:52Speaker 1: Sad saying Karen. We have a lot of very creative
- 38:54Speaker 1: spellings in the The correct answer is C A I R.
- 38:59Speaker 1: And although these are sometimes used as calculated markers, Cair
- 39:05Speaker 1: and building has become more destructive in the last decadeen
- 39:09Speaker 1: Zion National Park beg visitors in a Facebook post to
- 39:13Speaker 1: stop building them. They said this practice is vandalism and
- 39:16Speaker 1: that it's destroying habitat and creating erosion. Got I think
- 39:23Speaker 1: that at at their best. Uh, when you're hiking in
- 39:28Speaker 1: an area and you get into an alpine area, um
- 39:33Speaker 1: and over time, because there's no obstacles, people tend to
- 39:37Speaker 1: like emerge into the area and then spread out. And
- 39:41Speaker 1: so in trying to like to limit traffic in these
- 39:46Speaker 1: in alpine tundra, you would be like, okay, like here's
- 39:49Speaker 1: a rough course. Even though you can go wherever you want,
- 39:53Speaker 1: maybe you'd kind of stay on this little path. But
- 39:56Speaker 1: it is you go on some things and there's like
- 39:57Speaker 1: eight of them up there, and people was making for
- 40:01Speaker 1: the for the fun of it. Yeah, sometimes good, but
- 40:04Speaker 1: most oftense folks they just want to cool Instagram picture
- 40:08Speaker 1: one more little um and reading about Arctic explorers. Whenever
- 40:13Speaker 1: they want to, they leave a note about you know,
- 40:17Speaker 1: Bob's dad, we ate Dave, maybe we're gonna be at
- 40:22Speaker 1: Death Bay, you know. For the winner, they would write
- 40:27Speaker 1: a note, put into bottle or a tin, go to
- 40:30Speaker 1: a headline and make a giant rock cairn and then
- 40:33Speaker 1: you know someone's looking for that's where how giant you
- 40:39Speaker 1: talking back up to see from a ship most been
- 40:42Speaker 1: sizeable chunking, and then you dismantle it and find whatever
- 40:44Speaker 1: they had, you know, whatever like whatever dire whatever dire
- 40:49Speaker 1: news they had would be shared that way. Randall, congrats
- 40:53Speaker 1: on the victory. Eight correct answers. It's an authoritative game.
- 40:59Speaker 1: What happens ex is you get to choose where the
- 41:01Speaker 1: five hundred dollar donation goes from Meat Eater. So what's
- 41:04Speaker 1: it going to be? I would like the five dollars
- 41:07Speaker 1: to go to the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership. Its just
- 41:10Speaker 1: like our one. Steve also to me Vickery and started
- 41:15Speaker 1: another round of clapping. Now, random, what do you like
- 41:19Speaker 1: about them? Uh? They're a wonderful employer my previous employer
- 41:25Speaker 1: prior to coming to Meat Eater, and a lot of
- 41:27Speaker 1: excellent work, great folks, and focused on substantive policy that
- 41:33Speaker 1: makes life better for hunters and englers. Good on you, Randall.
- 41:36Speaker 1: That's a Tier two competitor that came in here. Stepte
- 41:39Speaker 1: to tell with you and Broody in Tier one he's
- 41:41Speaker 1: joined tier one victory too. It's kind of like you
- 41:46Speaker 1: don't even know the guy. How do you know? He's
- 41:48Speaker 1: tire too, though he came in at tier two. Was
- 41:53Speaker 1: bummed because Yanni was the only person in tier two. Oh,
- 41:56Speaker 1: I see how you're graining. I was, so he's tier
- 42:01Speaker 1: two until he's proven he's Tier one. Yeah, and we'll
- 42:03Speaker 1: flesh it out over the rest of it. It's like, like,
- 42:05Speaker 1: you know, to take it to a sports nology, you'd
- 42:07Speaker 1: be like, um an untested but very excited draft picks
- 42:12Speaker 1: like that. Still, you know, like Lebron James came into
- 42:15Speaker 1: the league, you know, had a strong, strong showing in
- 42:18Speaker 1: my first round, won a championship this time, you know,
- 42:21Speaker 1: just keep going. We'll see Randall. That's it for this episode.
- 42:25Speaker 1: Join us next time for more Meat Eat or Trivia,
- 42:28Speaker 1: the only game show where conservation always wins.
