- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:50My name is Curtis Wilson. I'm Brian Sigler.
- 0:53How are you doing tonight buddy? Me and you are Co watching some
- 0:58big 12 Hoops here. Who tournament teams battling
- 1:01down in the state of Texas. We're both very tired.
- 1:06Guys are if our energy level isn't normal.
- 1:11Brian has had a hell of a week. There there's been doctor's
- 1:17appointments in pretty much every member of my family this
- 1:20week, on top of not the greatest sleep due to some of those
- 1:25things. So if I'm a little low energy or
- 1:29lethargic compared to my normal Persona, don't take it out on
- 1:33me. I'm trying to try to grind
- 1:35through and we'll get a nice episode out for you guys.
- 1:38Anyway, getting a good episode out, regardless, just the energy
- 1:41levels, aren't there again Brian.
- 1:43Like you said everybody in his eye, Cows have been to the
- 1:45hospital or to the doctor this week.
- 1:48Also over here. We're changing schedules again
- 1:51with one of the kiddos back in school in person, though, my
- 1:56routines completely change and obviously, you know, pregnant
- 2:00wife and we're getting close. Close to time.
- 2:04Things are happening. Final Countdown.
- 2:06The Final Countdown, every little thing, where it's like,
- 2:10okay, eat meat texting and telling people Might not be able
- 2:16to work tomorrow and then I'm working tomorrow.
- 2:19So on alert. Nope not only I don't know
- 2:22exactly but you know guys it's been a couple weeks since we
- 2:25dropped anything and that was the white Vixen of you, we
- 2:29really appreciate all the listens we got to that we had an
- 2:32unbelievable time with the white.
- 2:34You know if you don't follow him and Victory Life on Twitter.
- 2:40Do so he's a heck of a follow and we're definitely probably
- 2:44going to have Him back soon but since that point I'm a lot of
- 2:50things going on Hokie Nation. We're going to hit a variety of
- 2:53topics tonight. But what's going to lead off the
- 2:57show is something the guys over at some of the Saturday
- 3:00primarily Evan Norse. Did he had an interview with
- 3:04former hokey quarterback Hendon hooker and you know, overall the
- 3:10interview Brian, you know it seems like, you know, he left on
- 3:14foot. Cordial terms.
- 3:16He did not bus anybody he did, raise some things here and there
- 3:23what was what was some of the things that kind of caught you
- 3:27Brian. Yeah, definitely wasn't like a
- 3:30clap back season type interview so we didn't see any of the
- 3:34sparks flying or anything like that.
- 3:36Whether you were expecting that or not expecting that, you know
- 3:41you'll be disappointed there. It's very much a Straightforward
- 3:46interview, some concerns in there but nothing that you know
- 3:51was you know get your popcorn ready, worthy of our checking
- 3:57out there. It was it was a very good
- 3:58interview. I think Kevin did a good job
- 4:00with it. Particularly things that stood
- 4:02out for me and you know this is one thing that we talked about
- 4:08before is some of the comments that have been made about the
- 4:11offensive scheme. Nothing was necessary.
- 4:15He blatantly lately - but there were some concerns about, you
- 4:23know, sometimes plays not there. Sometimes you don't have the
- 4:28right call at the right time, you know, things like that,
- 4:32where you can kind of read between the lines a little bit.
- 4:35And say, yeah, I wasn't always put in the best position and
- 4:38when even when I was sometimes the play call wasn't right?
- 4:41So that's obviously Something that we need to work for.
- 4:46We talked about this before and I know it's low-hanging.
- 4:50Fruit to bash the offensive coordinator in general at
- 4:54Virginia Tech. I mean, it's a tale as old as
- 4:56time or at least as old as the be Moreira 2001.
- 5:01Yeah, exactly. So, don't mean, we've been doing
- 5:04this a while at the same time, that doesn't make the concerns
- 5:09that are raised both by the fans.
- 5:11And in this case by the former quarterback in and Hooker
- 5:16invalid. Yeah, you know he said it in the
- 5:20piece was he said the system is great, which Ron me and you have
- 5:24said numerous times, like the system is the, the style that we
- 5:29have is a really unbelievable system.
- 5:32But to your point, Yes, when he said, right?
- 5:38Place at the right time Brian. I think did you text me?
- 5:42Or I texted you I sent that quote in like what rhymes?
- 5:46Like we said that. That's what we're saying
- 5:49validation. Yeah.
- 5:51I mean I'll take a Victory lap on this.
- 5:53I mean we've been talking about this for a long time, it's not
- 5:56the scheme. It's the number one sometimes
- 6:00week-to-week preparation. Number two situational play
- 6:03calling And and it's not that the offense has been bad.
- 6:08Especially in terms of just the raw numbers is that there's so
- 6:11many points that are left on the field week to week.
- 6:15And there's so many opportunities to extend a drive
- 6:17that can put you in a better position to win the game that,
- 6:20you know, there's just it just isn't there.
- 6:23So, you know, we're not saying we're not critical of the
- 6:25offense across the board. I think there are pluses and
- 6:29minuses to take from it, but when you see a very key thing
- 6:32that there's nothing being I'm done to address that key thing,
- 6:37you know, that's when you start having some, some questions come
- 6:41out and some like, hey, why aren't we doing anything to
- 6:44address this obvious shortcoming.
- 6:48Exactly. So, yeah, so definitely those
- 6:50concern that kind of thought my the other one that called pain,
- 6:55both eyes, Brian was talking about, who had the closest
- 6:58relationship with and you expected to, you know, Here, one
- 7:04of the position coaches or something like that.
- 7:06And he said, nice like, you know, really the gaas and he
- 7:09really, he mentioned Caleb jealous.
- 7:11Amino as something that body, talk to regular day-to-day in
- 7:15person. And at first, when you read
- 7:18that, if you take just that line out, it's like, oh my God, our
- 7:23coaches are out of touch. He kind of followed it up and he
- 7:26said, you know, that, that's usually how it is.
- 7:30He's like, you know, you come in, you can talk to coaches
- 7:32sometimes. But in college football, they
- 7:34have so much on their plates during the day.
- 7:37Yeah, be recruiting this 24/7 now.
- 7:39I mean, I'm playing it. Like, there's if it's not be
- 7:43scheduled time to be with the coaches.
- 7:46Yeah, I get that being close with the ga like if that's whose
- 7:49ear you're going to Ping, First with any sort of concern and
- 7:54he's sort of like, low-level question that you have about
- 7:57whether it's skiing whether it's game, plan, you know, whatever
- 8:01it may be. That's where you're going to
- 8:02touch first. And if they can't get you the
- 8:06answers, then you kind of move up the chain of command there.
- 8:08But yeah, I mean it made more sense as he went in there and
- 8:13the gaas are obviously going to be more accessible day-to-day
- 8:17and minute-to-minute than than the even position coaches.
- 8:20Especially. You're probably in the, in the
- 8:23offseason there. So yeah, I definitely understand
- 8:26the answer, even though like the first line kind of like, whoa,
- 8:30whoa, that's that's interesting. But, you know, the explanation
- 8:33makes sense, the explanation makes tons of sense and you know
- 8:38the other pieces it goes back to that.
- 8:41How much support staff do you have?
- 8:42How many gaas do you have? How many analysts do you have?
- 8:45Because the more guys you have like that obviously.
- 8:49You know, four players come in at once and there's one GA and
- 8:52they're all going to talk to him and talk ball and talk shop and
- 8:55things that are going on in their heads.
- 8:57Well, he has for people to think about in four different
- 9:00potential different coaches to go back to the relay.
- 9:02What's going on with those guys again the building of the
- 9:06operation staff is going to help with that because if you have
- 9:09enough staff there, More people to listen, to The Players, to
- 9:14communicate it back to the coaches, when the coaches are
- 9:16in, you know, deep film study or deep recruiting type stuff are
- 9:20on the road for recruiting potentially.
- 9:23So, again, always talking about it again.
- 9:26There's been those reports that the staffs going to get bigger,
- 9:29which is what we need. So it makes sense completely
- 9:35again. It's like one of those things
- 9:36you're in a big company, not many times, can you walk into
- 9:40the vp's office and sit down have a conversation?
- 9:42Can you usually talk into, you know, the operations manager or
- 9:47Financial Manager before you get to go to the big box chair?
- 9:52But that last one, Brian, me and we need to just talk on it.
- 9:55Did that make your eyebrows raised a few minutes ago?
- 9:59It did man talking about what happened with the bowl and
- 10:06Senior from the from the sounds that they've hidden stalking
- 10:09their. It's it's very it seems very
- 10:11much like a situation where the players wanted to play.
- 10:17Yeah. Some power that that is behind
- 10:22the scenes or whether it's coaching staff, whether it's
- 10:26athletic department, whether it's, you know, somewhere else
- 10:29said, you know, we're probably not going to be in this bowl.
- 10:32That's interesting. I know we've, I think heard
- 10:35Whispers as you know, will players voted not to do it or
- 10:39coaches said they weren't going to do it.
- 10:40Like we've heard the gamut of potential reasons why a bowl
- 10:45game wasn't played. You know we I think They've been
- 10:49kind of of the mind that we don't feel like the team earned
- 10:53it. So we were kind of fine with not
- 10:55playing it but it would have been nice to keep the streak
- 10:59going even if it didn't mean as much, but it's interesting
- 11:05getting that perspective. Just because we hadn't heard any
- 11:07player, talk about it directly before.
- 11:10So it was it was interesting to see that that's the case and you
- 11:14know I'm not I don't see any other hard data out there too.
- 11:19To contradict what hidden and saying here.
- 11:21So nah, not at all. There's nothing out there saying
- 11:25and whether it came from coaches coaching staff or leaders of the
- 11:28team. Well, it was going to be what
- 11:31the Military Bowl it was going to be, you know, it was not
- 11:35going to be a bowl of prestige. It was probably going to be a
- 11:38bowl where the guys were going to have to stay on campus for
- 11:42Christmas and after the hell that they've been through with
- 11:44this with this, with covid shit. I'm fine with what they did man.
- 11:50So, yeah, you know, I mean, he talked about he's like, you
- 11:52know, I think most, The players were fine with it because they
- 11:55wanted to get the extra tape. Like, if they play the game,
- 11:58they got an extra game to get tape on it at least against the
- 12:01quality opponent. Even if it's not necessarily A
- 12:04high-level, ranked opponent that you would have liked to seen in
- 12:08a bowl game, but like I said, I would have kind of been good
- 12:13with either way, it's nice to kind of In a way in a season
- 12:18like we had just to go ahead and kind of rip the Band-Aid off on
- 12:22this whole Bowl streak thing and kind of move forward with that.
- 12:28Not the expectations for this past season were We did not
- 12:35close to meeting them. They were high, we didn't come
- 12:37close to meeting them. So if we're, if we're going to
- 12:39rip the Band-Aid off, we might as well do it in a season like
- 12:42this or we've already live the disappointment.
- 12:46Abso-freakin'-lutely. All right.
- 12:49Something else that came out in. This was back on the 16th.
- 12:53So, really just a couple days after we last recorded.
- 12:59The coaching salaries. Now obviously the reduce
- 13:02compensation this year because of covid.
- 13:04They all agreed to take hits. But Brian, let me let's do this.
- 13:08I think this will be a little fun activity.
- 13:10I'm going to give you a coach give you their almost salary,
- 13:13not the adjusted salary. Too much, too little just right,
- 13:18you ready? Yep.
- 13:19Let's roll Jafar Williams, 280 thousand dollars a year.
- 13:26Based on recent history, probably too much much, okay,
- 13:30Vance, Vice 300,000, that's just right, just right, just right
- 13:37Jack, Tyler brand-new 250k. That's just right.
- 13:41I like that disagree with you, on that one.
- 13:44I think Jack needs 25,000 more because we know he can call the
- 13:47game if needed. We'll discuss that later, folks.
- 13:51I'll build Karen Lee 400,000. It's probably a little higher
- 13:58than I'd like but I get, why we're paying him that?
- 14:01Well, I think I see the defensive line in the
- 14:03improvements. We had in that one year.
- 14:06I think he's just right. And if the defensive line
- 14:08continues to improve, I think he deserves a bump.
- 14:13Right here we go. Brian Smith 275.
- 14:20I like it. I like that.
- 14:22He got a bump from where he was. He definitely earned it last
- 14:26year between getting Dorian strong where he was dealing with
- 14:29not having his two best corners the whole year and doing a good
- 14:34job on the recruiting Trail. So I think hearing pump probably
- 14:39could be a little bit higher if you really, you know, if we're
- 14:41being honest, but I get that you can't do, you can't go, but so
- 14:45much on on one year's worth of data.
- 14:48So I'm gonna 75. This is gonna be an interesting
- 14:52one. The next one I'm going to 75
- 14:54maybe giving 20K more P95 but it's not, he's it's not
- 14:59atrocious next year. You know, the Seabees continue
- 15:04to play like they played, especially once he has Pull all
- 15:08season, you better get ready to write an extra 50 to 60 thousand
- 15:13and eight, guys check. All right, you ready?
- 15:16Yep. James shall best four hundred,
- 15:20seventy five thousand dollars. It's high.
- 15:25It's it if you told me he was like 425, I'd probably say maybe
- 15:31just right. You know, we're talking about,
- 15:37he's pretty much up there with. I know we're going to get to the
- 15:40offensive coordinator here in a little bit.
- 15:41He's right there at the offensive coordinator as you
- 15:44know, doing position special teams in a position there.
- 15:47So that seems a little high to me.
- 15:52Seems I put him at 425 and I'd be happy with for 25.
- 15:57It seems extremely high to me now.
- 16:00They are your life. 375 then. Oh yeah.
- 16:04Yes 75 To a hundred thousand dollars.
- 16:06Less. The only way I would say I would
- 16:08approve. This is if he's essentially the
- 16:11associate head coach, have one in title.
- 16:14Right now, Shabbos is probably the most experienced coach on
- 16:18the staff probably and I'm assuming maybe that's why he's
- 16:21getting it, he's not entitled. But technically since he runs
- 16:25special teams, that maybe he's really doing some of the stuff
- 16:29with Justin just not entitle is just in his, it's just in his
- 16:34job description. So but put the title if he's
- 16:38doing that so I can justify 475 if he's not doing that giving
- 16:42375 and spread the 100,000 elsewhere.
- 16:47Alrighty here. All right.
- 16:49Adam lectin Berg. 275,000. I mean with the new role he's
- 16:56taking on, I think that's just right, I can see somewhere
- 17:00between 250 and 275. So Let it ride it 275, I'm good
- 17:07with you know, where he's at right now now.
- 17:12And you kind of say, if he has someone have, let's say he has
- 17:16another fifteen hundred yard rusher next year.
- 17:20Do we need to pay that man? Some more money.
- 17:22I mean, he'll If he if he gets 1,000 yard rusher with the
- 17:26probably more than likely a committee backfield then I mean
- 17:31you definitely got to give him at least a little bump.
- 17:33Up to maybe three, okay. That because that I think that's
- 17:38not only the evaluation that he had to bring in a guy like
- 17:42Herbert and then to have a season like he had within to
- 17:46back that up with Back feel that doesn't have a true lead back as
- 17:51of this moment, you know, if a guy like Holston goes out and
- 17:55gets a thousand yards and you get a, you know, about 750
- 17:58all-purpose from a guy like Blackshear and, you know, a few
- 18:02hundred from from the other guys collectively.
- 18:05I mean, that's a pretty solid fucking coaching job there with
- 18:10talent. That is good.
- 18:11But not necessarily a deleted, any level.
- 18:15Very true JC price walking in brand new 275 and he issues with
- 18:22that. Absolutely not good across the
- 18:25board. I think with having the role
- 18:28that he's going to have in really spearheading the
- 18:35recruiting in the state, probably some of the alumni
- 18:38relations on top of the job. He's gonna be doing working with
- 18:41Bill to your link. I think that's that's definitely
- 18:43justifiable. I'd have been happy with 250 but
- 18:48275 I can't argue with that either.
- 18:51I'm due at 275 to, but again, like a few other guys on this
- 18:56list. You see some let's just say we
- 19:01see three to four top 20 players in Virginia break the Hokies
- 19:06way. He might be asking for some more
- 19:10money next year. Yeah.
- 19:11I think on his front it's going to be the what changes do we see
- 19:17on the recruiting side? Just because with him being co
- 19:21position coach, I don't think even a good output from the
- 19:25defensive line when necessarily warrant a bump.
- 19:28But if you see, you know, the continued output that we saw
- 19:32last year, the offensive line on top of some recruiting.
- 19:37Bumps, that we weren't expecting that.
- 19:40I think you can definitely say okay well this is JC working his
- 19:43magic, you know. Maybe maybe you know you know
- 19:47you're not talking a big boy. Yeah I don't think you put it
- 19:49much above 3 but You know, we'll see where I'd be at.
- 19:55All right, so the next one, before we get into the two
- 19:58coordinators. Let's discuss Ben Hill.
- 20:00Barks. The banking conditioning head,
- 20:03man, So he's a 280, okay. What if I told you that?
- 20:12The top guy in the country is making double what he makes.
- 20:20That's the Bama strength and conditioning coach, and I'm not
- 20:23bad. I'm going to say, I guess that's
- 20:25really two fronts. I think he is relative to that.
- 20:30I think he's learning what he's making that also.
- 20:34Begs the question are we under paying for that role?
- 20:39So, essentially, our we are, we attract not attracting a high
- 20:43level selection in that role because of where our salary is
- 20:48for it. That's I'm not knocking, he'll
- 20:51guard here, but by any stretch I think that he'll guard does a
- 20:54pretty decent job. I think there are shortcomings
- 20:58in some of the things that we do because there are certain
- 21:02position groups that consistently or not.
- 21:06I don't think putting on the good way.
- 21:09Wait, that we'd like to see or at least the consistent good
- 21:12way. That we'd like to see, I think
- 21:14there is very much a not Beachbody mentality, but I think
- 21:23a lot of times we sacrifice, Core strength for, I guess,
- 21:30functional weight, which I think is good, but at some point you
- 21:35got to be bigger faster stronger than the next guy.
- 21:39And Brian, I was incorrect on the top page, strength and
- 21:42conditioning coach is Mickey, Mariota at Ohio State, who is
- 21:46making eight hundred thousand dollars a year.
- 21:49Okay. So yeah, we're pretty much
- 21:50getting what we're paying for them.
- 21:52Yep. Taking a look here.
- 21:54Ben Hill. Guard is Is.
- 21:57Yeah. Where's the ranking in terms of
- 21:59actual position? Because I know there's going to
- 22:01be a big, a big depth of difference between kind of those
- 22:06top-tier Blue Bloods versus your average power.
- 22:10Five straight, you won't see him believe it or not, we're about
- 22:1540th teams, like Virginia, NC State Lewisville, all paying
- 22:22more, So we're honestly right where we are in terms of
- 22:29assisting compensation, we're right, we're right on track with
- 22:33that, with that position as well.
- 22:35So that yeah, yeah. So we're paying, you know, we've
- 22:40got top top 25 expectations with with top 40 investment, ding
- 22:45ding. All right, let's get the last to
- 22:47roll in here. Justin Hamilton six hundred
- 22:51thousand dollars a year. I mean, I'm fine with it.
- 23:00Yeah, I think what happens is season is going to determine
- 23:03whether a lot more about what I think about that.
- 23:07I don't think that we got a really good barometer of how
- 23:11good of a higher, you know, just mammals.
- 23:14It's going to be long term and I think we know that we know the
- 23:19good things and we know that at least in the short term Season 1
- 23:25wasn't the best. But season 1 also wasn't.
- 23:28There wasn't a lot of Installation time for that
- 23:33defense. And there was a lot of time to
- 23:36practice that installation. So I'm trying not to hold that
- 23:41against this season's output on top of all the other issues that
- 23:47the defense in particular dealt with, with covid more so than
- 23:50the offense. So let's look that's a
- 23:56wait-and-see for me. Like I said, I'm fine with it
- 23:58now but it's definitely a wait and see.
- 24:01Once I see what this offseason looks like once next season
- 24:04looks like how the defense adjust what type of, you know,
- 24:09when we talked about the, the presser that he had, some of the
- 24:13okay we'll little bit of addition by subtraction, little
- 24:16bit of streamlining the concepts, keeping some of the
- 24:19concepts that were working with the with with buds defense into
- 24:23the system and just in general making the system that he is
- 24:28implementing. More consistent across the board
- 24:32in terms of the type of communication that's coming from
- 24:35the coaches. So we'll see if that pays
- 24:37dividends on top of actually having a spring practice, on top
- 24:41of having a normal fault, fall Camp.
- 24:43So time until they're absolutely.
- 24:47And last but not least, The Whipping Boy of the podcast,
- 24:52right cornelison for ninety thousand dollars.
- 24:58Honestly in terms of what boats offensive coordinators get paid.
- 25:02I mean he's earning his money we're just not paying enough for
- 25:07that position in my opinion. Uh-huh.
- 25:12And we're getting what we're paying for Let's hope, you know,
- 25:17that discussion of there's more money coming into the program
- 25:22for spending those types of money in that and not only.
- 25:29It helps the guys who were, you know, really performing here
- 25:32where we can get them to adequate level, so they don't
- 25:34leave, but those who are not performing, let's hope that's
- 25:39able to get them out the door and get an upgrade with
- 25:43significantly more money to be paid.
- 25:45Yeah. And you know that philosophy if
- 25:47we're if we were hiring some new guys just you know, starting
- 25:51from scratch, we already have 20 in place but starting from
- 25:53scratch, everything else I'd have like 750,000 being the
- 25:59minimum starting price for my coordinators.
- 26:02Minimum and obviously. Now we kind of think we'll
- 26:06strength and conditioning for probably be closer to 400,000 if
- 26:10we just, yeah, if we bump that up to 400 and we bumped both of
- 26:15the coordinators up to 750 and then, yeah, there would be
- 26:18trickle-down. I mean, you're not going to,
- 26:19you're not going to pay, what is it close to?
- 26:24700,000 for defensive line coach has in that situation.
- 26:29Knowledge, might have one guy that you pay 350 or 400
- 26:32thousand. It's true.
- 26:34But, you know, you kind of take a look at it.
- 26:36It's what it's a little over. It's like a half million dollars
- 26:40investment and upgrading those positions, it's not like a
- 26:43million dollars, you're not if you're not asking for a million
- 26:46dollars to those positions levels.
- 26:48Right now, you're asking for about a half million and if
- 26:51you're looking at that and you're saying, we're going to
- 26:52give a put a million Into the coaching pool.
- 26:54Well, that feeds a half million dollars down again, the good
- 26:58coaches, you pay them and you get probably what Thirty to
- 27:02fifty thousand dollar upgrades in the Pacific.
- 27:06Maybe the coaches like hey we gotta let him go but now we can
- 27:09bring in a three hundred thousand dollar guy and so on
- 27:12and so forth. All right, Brian?
- 27:14So last few weeks we have got a couple kreutz couple Unrated, at
- 27:20the time, they committed since they have gotten Stars.
- 27:24Let's start in Virginia. Harrison Saint-Germain out of
- 27:28Westfield, High School opened Chantilly rated as a three star
- 27:32tight end, you looked at the tape on him just a little while
- 27:38ago. Brine my getting Dalton or am I
- 27:40getting a gap? You're good to look.
- 27:44Somewhat somebody that's a little bit closer to James
- 27:46Mitchell in terms of skill set. Um, not quite as obviously at
- 27:51the top end of any category necessarily like that, but I
- 27:56will say he's blocking at least out.
- 27:57The gate is probably a little bit closer to what you would get
- 28:00with dolls and but he's definitely more of a Joker Style
- 28:05tight end that has the ability to block in line as well.
- 28:10Pretty good with his hands runs, pretty clean routes and like I
- 28:14said, blocks pretty well in line and in space, Not a bad player.
- 28:20I think, you know, it's kind of one of those things where we
- 28:25keep finding these. I'm not going to say diamond in
- 28:27the rough but guys that are under recruited and we're going
- 28:31to see a lot of this this year just because there hasn't been
- 28:35any any Junior table any of these guys.
- 28:40So there's going to be a lot of evaluations that look funky at
- 28:45first, but the more we get From whether they have a fall season
- 28:49like some of these guys from Virginia and some other states,
- 28:52or we start actually getting camps this summer, these guys
- 28:56are going to do. We're going to see weird jumps
- 28:59and ratings. We're going to see guys that are
- 29:01completely unrelated. All of a sudden jump to, like a
- 29:03high three-star, like right out the gate.
- 29:06So we're going to see a lot of funky stuff guys.
- 29:08So, I mean don't don't necessarily freaked out because
- 29:12a commit doesn't have, you know, three or four star next to their
- 29:16name. When we're starting to either
- 29:19see flirtations or when we see their verbal commitment, come
- 29:23through. Because, right now, a lot of
- 29:25these kids, just they have so little evaluation that.
- 29:29If the guys that we if our evaluations are correct, it's
- 29:34going to be a really good thing for us, so that's going to be
- 29:38the question though, is, are we getting the good evaluations
- 29:40here? Guys?
- 29:41Like Adam Lichtenberg have done a good job of evaluating talent
- 29:45and getting guys that fit well in the system, whether ER, it's
- 29:48guys with a four star next to their name or guys with a three
- 29:51star or even a fringe Fringe to Star coming in and guys in the
- 29:56transfer portal. So there's going to be a lot of
- 29:58opportunities to make some moves here on guys that have been
- 30:04under evaluated and under recruited through this point in
- 30:08the cycle. And we've got like,
- 30:12Saint-Germain, obviously, Westfield, not only Westfield,
- 30:16State of Virginia, in general are playing right now.
- 30:19So, you know, stuff you've seen on tape, if they one of those
- 30:24guys, he's like an 80 me get back there at him up.
- 30:27Sorry, all for doing it for us. Everything everything.
- 30:34You know, he's rated as an 84 composite and then in 83 by
- 30:4224/7. But again, he's about to get
- 30:46Junior tape as a really good Junior season and probably five
- 30:50six games, but it'd be a two-point bump to the mid 80s.
- 30:54And then if he has a, if their camps and he has a good camp,
- 30:59You know, you seen things on, take that already say he's
- 31:02already blocking it which is great for a Titan him.
- 31:05He has a potential to be a joker phone.
- 31:07You tell me a joker but he blocks good.
- 31:10You know, he be getting closer to that 88-89 you know.
- 31:16But in those glasses going to have the opportunity and you
- 31:19know obviously for him he'll have this then it'll have next
- 31:23fall as well to get re-evaluated.
- 31:25Yeah but let's come to one more brine brother already on the
- 31:28team and Brian Raylan more. There's a gene that runs in
- 31:34their family, huh? Huh.
- 31:36Yes, they got the nasty Jean. This guy really likes to get
- 31:42after it in the trenches finish blocks.
- 31:45Take guys to the dirt, get the pancakes.
- 31:48So I like that element of his game, kind of, I'd say, raw,
- 31:54especially in past Pro, so hopefully that we can clean that
- 31:58up moving from tackle, which is what he's been primarily playing
- 32:03in high school down into guard more than likely with us.
- 32:06Us is going to help that. So you know, we'll look to see
- 32:10how that goes. He also played defensive end in
- 32:13a three-man front system in his high school so he's got DN
- 32:17capability. Probably three technique
- 32:20d-tackle for us, if in our system, but more than likely,
- 32:25he's going to be playing on the offensive side of the ball at
- 32:27the guard position solid. Pick up.
- 32:31I mean nothing to necessarily Get excited about but I mean
- 32:37very solid pick up and I like I said I think from a run game
- 32:41perspective and just to having that nasty Gene you like having
- 32:43guys like that on your roster. Absolutely, and he's three star
- 32:48rated 84 and I'm not sure if Pennsylvania, obviously, it's
- 32:53one of those things. Not sure if they're playing a.
- 32:59Spring season or not. You know because so many states
- 33:03it's up and down and it's really made say this I'm going to keep
- 33:06more of an eye on Virginia than I am anybody and you know,
- 33:11because if they played great the tapes out there, he'll have a
- 33:15senior season again we need your brother's continues at Virginia
- 33:21Tech. You know, his biggest offer
- 33:24essentially at this point in time long, Virginia Tech's Not a
- 33:29great offer list. Well, I'm not going to say, no,
- 33:32I don't like that. Lot of some Matt schools, you
- 33:36know, some AAC schools and stuff like that but again, it's
- 33:41awkward. With just the way everything's
- 33:45going. The one thing about st.
- 33:47Germain. Run that will catch your eye.
- 33:50Not a huge offer list. The most catching one.
- 33:53Wake Forest. Yep.
- 33:56We know that at that is diamond in the rough.
- 33:59You? Yes, I Brian.
- 34:03Let's move on man. You know over the last few
- 34:06weeks. Our coaches have been talking to
- 34:10the Press. Now, this shit you say, But
- 34:16there's no point in that there was some disappointment in
- 34:20there. No one has known about them
- 34:23talking until we're sitting here.
- 34:26I'm working in his home office, me working in my home office,
- 34:29stop check the Twitter sphere, Andy bitter might nozzoli or you
- 34:34know, one of the other beat writers puts on there.
- 34:36And this coach said this, we're, we're having they haven't
- 34:41processors today. We're gonna discuss this in a
- 34:44few months. us with a individual that is much more into this
- 34:51stuff than we are and our depth of it discussing this in a way
- 34:56that Comes from an area of expertise than we are.
- 35:00We're novices but we kind of see, we see what's not
- 35:05happening. She can explain.
- 35:06What should be happening? A lot better than weekend.
- 35:10What our assessment is though is that when we look at something
- 35:14like this so you've got you know, set handful of coaches
- 35:18that are talking to the media. You've got a couple players
- 35:22here. They're talking to the media,
- 35:24but I don't know about. I mean, I follow Virginia Tech
- 35:27at WebEx as close as probably I'd say.
- 35:30I'm at least in the, you know what a percentile I'm in.
- 35:35The 90th percentile of people that that follow Virginia Tech
- 35:38football in particular, in Virginia Tech Athletics in
- 35:41general. I should know before I see
- 35:45tweets from. You know, might be Daniel and
- 35:50Andy bitter and Mike Barber. At least I should know that this
- 35:56interview is going to be taking place.
- 35:57I should know, because the official Virginia Tech Twitter
- 36:00account should let me know. Hey, these guys are speaking to
- 36:04Media today that way, even if you're not live streaming, it
- 36:08even if you're not making it immediately available to fans,
- 36:12should they can say okay, well this is happening.
- 36:16I'm going to follow might be Daniels Twitter today, or I'm
- 36:20gonna follow ND bitters Twitter today to see what's happening at
- 36:22this press conference. Not just Oh, I happen to find on
- 36:25the timeline and then like two days later, you end up sharing
- 36:29the video where it's on demand on Okie sports.
- 36:32Like, these are layups to Bill Hite for your program.
- 36:37These are layups free-throws. Whatever fucking analogy you
- 36:41want to have 44 easy. This is the easy stuff.
- 36:45If you want us to be engaged in hokey football and be excited
- 36:49about the upcoming season, hype up the opportunities that you
- 36:54are presenting Going to get closer to these new coaches in
- 36:57some cases or coaches that we, that have been around.
- 37:00But we haven't really heard from very much or players that we
- 37:03haven't heard from very much. I mean, Luke's a new to spoke
- 37:06with the media. I don't think he's spoken with
- 37:08the media is entire time and Virginia Tech and no, I didn't
- 37:12know about it until it was on hokey sports.
- 37:14Like it was a day later, like, what's the You know, I'm not
- 37:21saying that everything has to be immediately accessible.
- 37:24I get that there is a give and take with that because my
- 37:29perspective is that it's better to be be live because if someone
- 37:34does take it out of context, you can present the entire video in
- 37:37context in order to justify it. I get that mistakes happen with
- 37:41live video. You want to have as much control
- 37:44of the content as possible. So I get that aspect of it and
- 37:48that's why I'm okay with the tape too.
- 37:50They even if I personally disagree with what I'm not.
- 37:53Okay, with is not hyping it up at all.
- 37:57That's what I'm not. Okay.
- 37:58All I'm going to say is this when we get that interview that
- 38:03that is going to be a fire interview, that's all I'm going
- 38:05to say. And let's move on.
- 38:07Let's move on. We're going to store Brian Smith
- 38:10first run. Think the most interesting thing
- 38:13that you that came to Bryant rot from one of the most interesting
- 38:16things that came from Ron Smith right off.
- 38:18The bat was basically him sort of laying out that DJ Harvey
- 38:22lies, you Howard night Johnson. Are going to basically be
- 38:28starting at corner. He also mentioned a dears
- 38:31Thompson, has stayed with the corners, and Mike Hawkins is
- 38:33officially a safety, any shot their Brawn, and he, you know,
- 38:38isn't what in this Norm defensive?
- 38:40Yeah, that's going to be the norm mean.
- 38:42This is kind of like a stress test.
- 38:44Let's think about it, that way. Any guy that you think has the
- 38:48ability to play corner, you want to put them in that group,
- 38:51first, as kind of a stress, test to see, can they handle it?
- 38:55There can can that work? Unless there's an absolute need
- 38:59at a given position in the secondary.
- 39:03So, with that being said, it doesn't surprise me that that
- 39:06some of these guys are starting out at cornerback even if that's
- 39:09not going to be their final position.
- 39:11You know talking about nadir made a note that you spit that I
- 39:16know that you know when he was called upon especially in the
- 39:18Duke game you played a pretty good game that we had some other
- 39:24spot duties at cornerback On top of playing special teams pretty
- 39:29heavily last year. So I think he's going to be a
- 39:31guy that's going to be in that in that rotation in that
- 39:34discussion for kind of a too deep or rotational type duties
- 39:39for us coming in 2021. Love seeing, you know, it's not
- 39:45a shocker that DJ Harvey's going to be cornerback for us.
- 39:47That's what recruited him as that's.
- 39:49That's where he plays. Yeah, I really like what DJ is
- 39:54bringing to the table, in terms of talent.
- 39:56So I'm looking forward to And what he can do with, with Ryan
- 39:59Smith with the with the, the coming fall camp and I like the
- 40:04Nike Johnson's already working with them in the spring, so
- 40:07that's going to be good for him. Oh, absolutely.
- 40:10But you know something that he mentioned, you know, essentially
- 40:13he was going into last year expecting to have, you know, two
- 40:16of the top five corners in the ACC, to essentially D top Corner
- 40:21in the country and then Jermaine have been rated with like top 12
- 40:25year before. And Obviously, what happened
- 40:28with Caleb opting out, and then Jermaine getting banged and
- 40:30essentially being banged and unable to play to his potential,
- 40:33the rest of the year turn, guys. Like Dorian strong, the nadir
- 40:37Thompson's Brian Murray's. So what we could have been
- 40:42looking at this year, as a super green room is actually a I mean
- 40:46a pretty experienced room sort of top to bottom along with
- 40:50adding those kind of young guys into the mix really like that.
- 40:55Really like that because he was making the point of like You
- 40:57know, I don't have to do a trial by fire with these guys.
- 41:02Yeah, I mean, you had a trial by fire in the season that
- 41:05everything was a trial by fire. So, exactly, it's kind of nice
- 41:09having having a little bit of experience at that position that
- 41:13you know, you thought you were going to have last year that
- 41:15didn't come to fruition. And like I said, he would even
- 41:19if a perfect scenario last year would have occurred, you still
- 41:22would have been dealing with guys, like, Dorian strong,
- 41:25probably getting way more reps than you would have been.
- 41:27Comfortable with at the start of the Season, despite how, well he
- 41:32jumped in there and held up. So, I like, I like, what we're,
- 41:37I like knowing how what happened in 2020, I feel better going
- 41:44into this season, knowing what we have behind Jermaine Waller,
- 41:51versus how I felt last year, not really knowing what we had
- 41:54behind, Caleb and Jermaine. Nope, so feel better that that's
- 41:59just me. But, you know, he did, he
- 42:03mention quick with Jermaine that.
- 42:04Basically, you know, he couldn't speak to the injuries itself and
- 42:08we get that. That's a lot of stuff.
- 42:10But, you know, he mentioned how, you know, he's been crushing the
- 42:14all-season very self-motivated and he's becoming a leader in
- 42:17that room. Again, we go back to last year
- 42:20Jermaine was there, sort of taking over that role and maybe
- 42:24having a season of not being able to play being in those guys
- 42:29ears. Have now made him the alpha, Of
- 42:31that room. Yeah, and I mean, let's think
- 42:34about it this way. Caleb didn't opt out until late.
- 42:36So Jermaine, whether whether by choice or not was kind of all of
- 42:41a sudden, the de facto Elder Statesman in that room, and now
- 42:45he gets an offseason to grow into that role versus it being
- 42:48thrust upon Him due to the situation with covid and Caleb
- 42:53opting out. So I think that's going to be
- 42:55good for him. It sounds like he's taking over
- 42:58that leadership role. And it's going to be good to get
- 43:01him back on the field in the leadership role versus more or
- 43:03less what he was doing last season as having kind of a off
- 43:07the field or he's, you know, semi present leadership role
- 43:13because he was so often. I do either not available or
- 43:17when he was available he was limited having him be on the
- 43:22field and hopefully be you know up to full strength is going to
- 43:24be good for us. Going to be absolutely great for
- 43:28swear on. Now we already mentioned And
- 43:29that Smith got the pay bump and kind of one reason he got the
- 43:33pay bump mother, you say or not, they gave him the title passing
- 43:35game coordinator and brown. I know what kind of caught your
- 43:39ear was about and he got that role but it was kind of how he's
- 43:44built the where he's gotten to here, you know, his kind of
- 43:49talked about his journey which was really a good poignant
- 43:52thing. Yes, he talked about being
- 43:56having GA roles that kind of helped him move in to where he
- 44:01is now between GA rolls with William and Mary and Penn State
- 44:06working at JMU with a Powerhouse program at that level.
- 44:12I mean, he's kind of kind of seen a lot of things from for a
- 44:16guy that's relatively young and still up and coming at the
- 44:20cornerback coaching position of secondary coaching position.
- 44:23Um, and I think that that's why you saw, you know, essentially
- 44:28what happened going into NC State with him, being tapped as
- 44:33the the play caller, emergency play caller.
- 44:36If J Hamm is out there. So I think that that was a
- 44:41pretty big, big thing, because he was the backup signal caller
- 44:45before J, Hamm knew that he had covid.
- 44:49So this was something that was planned.
- 44:51Well, in advance of the emergency situation that that
- 44:55resulted in that being what they went with.
- 44:58So that speaks a lot to the trust that they have in Smith as
- 45:03a young coach it, absolutely, especially being the second in
- 45:08command on that, you know, the play calling thing, but then you
- 45:11start, you know, I think you mentioned it but Get letting him
- 45:16try different things in his room as a young coach.
- 45:20I'm sure there are a lot of young coaches that it's
- 45:22basically, you need to follow the script.
- 45:24This is what you do where you already said it.
- 45:27They trust him they're giving it open.
- 45:30Okay. Something else, they trust them
- 45:31with Brian. They trust him with Virginia
- 45:32recruiting to the line of stuck out.
- 45:35We want to keep the Virginia boys home, the man at resonated
- 45:40as I was as we were listening to it discuss JC about JC's,
- 45:45experience up and down the 95 Corridor and Richmond and Nova
- 45:5264 eastbound I-64 Corridor down the 75.
- 45:59Like if you listen to that, he's speaking the language to
- 46:01Virginia. Those are the corridors.
- 46:03Those are the areas we need to recruit big and it seems like
- 46:09they're locked in on it for this year.
- 46:11They're locked in on VA. I'll yeah.
- 46:14I mean, I think him and JC, you're going to do some, some
- 46:17pretty big things. Because Smith seems like a
- 46:20really good communicator. JC is a good communicator.
- 46:23He's got a ton of contacts especially with the High School
- 46:26coaches you know, good Avenues to pursue and you know,
- 46:32relationships to cultivate and I think that's going to be a big
- 46:35thing and you know, we haven't seen the success.
- 46:38Is that we'd like to see recruiting Virginia in the last
- 46:41few years and you know, whether we see it come to fruition or
- 46:45not. You at least know, they're
- 46:48doubling down on it. The emphasis has there and
- 46:52that's a start. That's, that's something to
- 46:54build off of. Absolutely definitely something
- 46:57big to build off of. And again, you've got to
- 47:02Homegrown guys with Smith and ham, obviously, JC with all the
- 47:07connections between playing it Tech being a ga attack.
- 47:12Coaching at JM using coach of it Marshall.
- 47:14He's basically been part of this state for 25 plus years.
- 47:19So yeah, we're getting more on him a little bit.
- 47:23Oh yes. But let's next let's go to Adam
- 47:25like them Berg. Hey Brian.
- 47:28How many are you running backs? We got, we got a fuck ton of
- 47:32running backs, man. I don't know if that's like a
- 47:35unit of measurement that we can count here, but I'm going to
- 47:38call it a fuck ton and it is and I love Of what he said, man.
- 47:43He was very kind of upfront. Like, oh, wait Smith on the mic,
- 47:48I'm real like tandberg. I think shocked me and Brian,
- 47:51you know, no notes in front of them, but very, very articulate,
- 47:55very to-the-point knowledge base, very knowledge, straight
- 47:59straight forward to like straight shooter didn't like
- 48:02didn't didn't get down rabbit holes or anything like that.
- 48:05Very to-the-point but but explained himself very well.
- 48:10I love what you talked about the crowded back there to get asked
- 48:12about it. And basically said he wants to
- 48:14have a full evaluation of all the running backs in the spring,
- 48:18you know, and basically an organization of the running
- 48:23back, every rep is important. Every mistake is important to
- 48:26his guys, but he, he made something when he after he said,
- 48:31that sort of stuff. Because, you know, somebody
- 48:34asked about the portal and he was just like, you know what?
- 48:36After this spring You don't hear this often.
- 48:41We're going to have open and honest conversation with every
- 48:43running back in the room. Which I to me, you don't hear
- 48:47coaches, say that at all because I he's telling them he's going
- 48:52to tell guys. Yep, hey, you're stepping up.
- 48:54You might not be on the too deep this year or getting a lot of
- 48:57reps. But you're working there or
- 48:59listen, you might need to you might need to get in the
- 49:02Portland. Yeah I mean and I think that's a
- 49:05big thing. He talked about a couple guys
- 49:07that have the potential ability to make position change choices
- 49:12at the end of the spring and then some guys that he's just
- 49:14going to have opened. A conversation like amen.
- 49:17You know, you're not touching the four or five deep at running
- 49:22back here so you're probably not going to be getting any reps
- 49:24come this fall. You're here are some choices you
- 49:27can do, you can stick it out, you know, whatever.
- 49:29Maybe you know, you can see what the transfer portal holes or you
- 49:32can look at change of positions and get an opportunity, either
- 49:36on the other side of the ball or at another position on offense,
- 49:39whether it's wide receiver, or something else.
- 49:41But just having this, I mean, that's that's a good.
- 49:45That's refreshing to hear from me because it sounds like we're
- 49:48going to really try to get this running back room where it needs
- 49:53to be and it's going to start with the spring and really
- 49:56seeing what all these guys can bring to the table.
- 49:58Because I know I've said it on here before it's hard to get
- 50:03those type of evaluations in the fall.
- 50:05You're you're focusing so much on who were my best three to
- 50:10four guys at the position and not looking at, you know, the
- 50:14down Channel situation and we were already thick at running
- 50:19back going into fall, but there wasn't a whole lot of
- 50:21evaluation. And so, many of the guys that we
- 50:23were bringing on where either transfers or freshman, or green
- 50:28guys that are coming from giucose and things like that.
- 50:32So, If there wasn't a lot of that evaluation that could take
- 50:35place last year and getting a chance to do that.
- 50:37With such a crowded back. Feel is going to be nice because
- 50:41will at least be able to know we have Beyond you know the first
- 50:45two to three guys and see if there's some guys that may fit
- 50:49somewhere else and guys that can open up roster spots that we can
- 50:52fill with, with other need positions, because we can't keep
- 50:56doing this thing where we load up on, you know, Exposition one
- 51:00year and we opposition the next year and then N.
- 51:03You know, put ourselves in a situation where we're thin at
- 51:06certain positions every year going into the new season, true
- 51:12well, Brian. He also said something that
- 51:14absolutely got you a static as we were listening to it.
- 51:21Yes, he did. Apparently we're to be working
- 51:26with with, to back looks in the spring two of them.
- 51:31Is as I sent Brian. Go on, let's go.
- 51:38Tell me more, tell me more. Yeah, so I'll be we had talked
- 51:44about. I will take a Victory lap on
- 51:46this. I know I've already taken a
- 51:47small one earlier on the court, Nelson situation within and
- 51:51hooker, but I will take another Victory lap on, you know,
- 51:55someone that said before Blackshear even got his waiver,
- 51:59that we need to be looking at 21 Personnel, a lot and using the
- 52:08Back as kind of a hybrid Wing slot.
- 52:10Receiver that can also do some things out of the backfield.
- 52:15We've got Blackshear on the roster.
- 52:17Now we're bringing in a guy, like, chance, black going
- 52:20forward. We've got a couple other guys
- 52:22that are versatile, that can do stuff in that type of situation.
- 52:27Let's take advantage of that, let's not.
- 52:30Let's not pigeonhole guys into. Okay, well, you're a running
- 52:34back. So you have to carry the ball
- 52:35out of the backfield in inside and outside Zone, like it was so
- 52:42and I'll be I was glad that we finally, the last, what?
- 52:45Two or three games got Blackshear more involved in the
- 52:48passing game from the slot position in from the wing and
- 52:52doing things that weren't just, you know, you line up next to
- 52:55the quarterback and take the hand off.
- 52:58So, I mean that was nice but you know, I like that he's still
- 53:02gonna be working out of the running back room, but the fact
- 53:06that we're going to be doing different things with black
- 53:09sharing with other guys of the similar type of skill set.
- 53:13Whether that's Keshawn king or chance, black, or anybody else?
- 53:17Yeah, that's only going to pay dividends for us.
- 53:20I mean, there's no downside to that.
- 53:22And one thing, you all the black sheer thing that always got you,
- 53:25I wish it coach, I don't care if it was one thick or Nielsen like
- 53:29them Burg someone would have came out.
- 53:31And just kind of said, the blacks here thing and basically
- 53:34said, you know, He was, he was essentially Goering, it's so
- 53:40late. It was just too late for us, but
- 53:44Brian, we had this discussion, is this, we were talking about
- 53:46that. Well, here's the thing, you have
- 53:49some guys who are maybe not a carbon copy Of Raheem
- 53:56Blackshear, but they could do some of the things he did and
- 53:59it's sort of me. And you started discussing, it's
- 54:01like, why wouldn't you start essentially showing looks giving
- 54:05those guys out of interchanging with, Rahim, to me, it says
- 54:11something about certain people of the coaching staff.
- 54:14Not being, you know up here, not thinking like that.
- 54:19But neither here nor there, somebody should have just said
- 54:21that it would have a made Brian less pissed off during certain
- 54:25games. Next year and you know things
- 54:28like that. Brian he he mentioned a couple
- 54:31things, you know, Jalen Holtzman.
- 54:33Obviously we feel generous probably, you know, that name is
- 54:37gonna be penciled in at the top of the list away here and
- 54:39especially the back half of the season but he hit Omar Ali and
- 54:43he hit on Keshawn King. What were your thoughts about?
- 54:46You know, how he discussed those two guys.
- 54:50Yeah, I mean the big thing that stood out for me with Marco Lee
- 54:53and this kind of explains why maybe he didn't get as many
- 54:56looks until late in the season last year is that he was still
- 55:00learning the system, especially what the running back does.
- 55:05When they don't have their, have the football in their hands.
- 55:09And that makes a lot of sense in terms of a guy, like Marco
- 55:11coming into the system, you know?
- 55:16I'll compare him a little bit with rain Blackshear who while
- 55:20he didn't learn the system. He had been in a system that he
- 55:24had to do all those things already.
- 55:27He had to work without the football weather from the slot
- 55:31position or from the running back position.
- 55:33So he was little bit more seasoned and ready to contribute
- 55:38even though he wasn't necessarily a master of this
- 55:40current system, whereas a guy like Marco Lee is for the most
- 55:44part, Learning a lot of. The things that he does without
- 55:50the football in his hands, for the first time, he's never done
- 55:53it in a college football game at this level.
- 55:56So, that's something that's going to take some time to come
- 55:59along and especially not having spring having a very different
- 56:04fall camp. And let's talk about fall Camp
- 56:06because you talked about it with the black sheer thing.
- 56:12Fall Camp, reps are finite and you're trying to find.
- 56:18Kind of the best two or three guys, you can put on the field.
- 56:21So at the running back position in this is where the black sure
- 56:25thing. Your talk about makes more
- 56:26sense. The waiver didn't come in till
- 56:29late. You didn't until you got the
- 56:33waiver. You couldn't justify taking reps
- 56:35from other guys. Just to put blacks you're out
- 56:39there for X number of reps or whatever.
- 56:41The second team reps are and all that stuff.
- 56:44You know, you had Keshawn King that probably came in at a
- 56:48weight that you weren't comfortable with is him being
- 56:50the primary spell back. He had some other injuries, he
- 56:53was dealing with. There was a several several
- 56:56things that were going on for Keyshawn King.
- 57:00You had everybody else other than Jalen Holston that was
- 57:04very, very green. In this system.
- 57:08So I mean if you say there's a misstep in all of this, in terms
- 57:12of who got carries who got touches etc etc.
- 57:16In 2020 Holston, not getting as many touches early as probably
- 57:20the the most egregious error here, everything else is
- 57:25explainable. So that's kind of what I based
- 57:30on the conversation that Lichtenberg had with the media.
- 57:33That's kind of where I came out. Yeah.
- 57:38In, you know, but that is what it was last year.
- 57:41You know, you you was on the Fly and we went five and six, it was
- 57:46not the expectations we wanted. We did have a bunch of new guys
- 57:49there. Maybe, maybe that truly
- 57:52satisfying. The eight ball.
- 57:52Maybe I'm trying to be an optimist right now, but
- 57:55something, you know, I was critical of the Luxembourg
- 57:58higher didn't like it, but as you start reading more and more
- 58:02and you start listening to him, I mean, he grinded his ass off.
- 58:06Yep. Big time I mean he's been in
- 58:10admin roles, he's been in GA roles, he's been in.
- 58:16I mean 12 years until you get your first position coach role
- 58:21and doing a bunch of different things.
- 58:23Yes, off the field and behind the scenes.
- 58:27So, I mean there's been a lot of things that he's seen and I
- 58:31think, Of anybody. He's kind of got a better CEO
- 58:35type vision of at least, from the offensive side of things.
- 58:39Than even, you know, your coordinator has probably
- 58:43probably better than anybody other than 20 on the staff.
- 58:46True. And he loves football.
- 58:48There's are you don't if you guys look at his journey started
- 58:52in 2007, but he's probably in his mid-20s.
- 58:57Two. Now that guy loves football,
- 59:00there is not a doubt about that and you know, Brian wrote down
- 59:05this quote, and basically, he's been grinding his whole life,
- 59:10you know? And to have somebody like that
- 59:13with that mentality He Walked on it.
- 59:15Nebraska again, his personality on the microphone, it's kind of
- 59:21impressive. He mentioned his parents were
- 59:22teachers, so obviously paying for all these important people,
- 59:27you know, talks about the recruiting game being 24/7
- 59:30non-stop. You can't stop.
- 59:33You know, I'm if he puts out another 1,000 yard, rusher in a
- 59:39bind said earlier, maybe I have to store born the like den Berg
- 59:44trains. All right, let's move on the
- 59:48lowest man on the totem pole. Currently Jack, Tyler, you know,
- 59:53first of all those Tracy plays doing last year that Jack Tyler
- 59:56was the emergency emergency play caller.
- 59:59You know, all Smith was the emergency play caller as
- 1:00:02Discussed earlier. You know that's still a head
- 1:00:07scratcher for me but I mean that that's a different discussion or
- 1:00:11but yeah, we're was Clays. And why was Clay's not giving
- 1:00:15this responsibility. So like I'm not sure if Clay's
- 1:00:19showed up and just didn't give a shit or he wasn't there or what
- 1:00:23like Tracy. Claeys you obviously a good
- 1:00:25coach like you don't have the length career and success that
- 1:00:30Clays has without being a pretty.
- 1:00:32Decent, and respectable coach. I know he was coaching number
- 1:00:36one out of position in terms of what he's traditionally.
- 1:00:40Coached number two, In a situation where he's more of a
- 1:00:47mentor versus a leader which may be just a different Dynamic from
- 1:00:52him, whatever it was, it didn't work.
- 1:00:55And you know this is definitely an addition by subtraction
- 1:00:59situation in my mind getting Jack as the primary linebacker
- 1:01:02coach. Absolutely and again jack that
- 1:01:06guy walked on then became a starred in Mike linebacker has
- 1:01:10essentially again. You know, he worked his way,
- 1:01:15went to JMU came back here in the way it's down in the
- 1:01:19interview. He had a potential chance last
- 1:01:21year at maybe taking a lower jaw, but he decided to stay
- 1:01:25again. The Lure of Virginia Tech, we
- 1:01:29talked about a talked about 420 in a very high regard.
- 1:01:33Talked about him as a Amir coaches.
- 1:01:34Anyone in the program is on the right track and I know these
- 1:01:39guys are, we may judge about that.
- 1:01:47I better see Improvement that be terrible.
- 1:01:57But talked about himself. As a coach you want to try to
- 1:02:01stay even Keel. Never too high, never to do.
- 1:02:04Get caught up in the moment mature room.
- 1:02:07You know, you know, he's essentially trying to take his
- 1:02:12plane self, bringing it to a coaching self.
- 1:02:15What I hope he can do with the guys.
- 1:02:17We have, because we've got a good core right now.
- 1:02:21Who are so much physically more gifted than Jack ever was, but
- 1:02:26if they can get the mind of Jack, Tyler, and Dax and
- 1:02:31Tisdale's, and Dean's and key, Sean's bodies, that's gonna be a
- 1:02:37nasty room and I know that is a key to Springs.
- 1:02:41Getting the depth back in that room.
- 1:02:44For this year. Yeah, yeah, that definitely
- 1:02:47that. And, I mean, he talked about,
- 1:02:49you know, talked about Dax talked about Tisdale, he said
- 1:02:53for Tisdale, you know, sky's the limit for him as a player.
- 1:02:56He's put on some good weight, this spring for the 2019, yeah,
- 1:03:02yeah. In a month.
- 1:03:04Yeah. But apparently, you know,
- 1:03:08maturing in terms of how he's approaching the game.
- 1:03:11How is approaching preparation for practice and for, Four
- 1:03:14games. So I think that's going to be
- 1:03:16important in terms of his growth because I mean, we talked about
- 1:03:19it on the podcast a lot of times in 2020.
- 1:03:24It wasn't so much that Tisdale looked even with his weight
- 1:03:28overmatched is that he wasn't where he needed to be.
- 1:03:33It looked like he didn't really, he wasn't comfortable in the
- 1:03:36scheme at all. There were moments where he was
- 1:03:40there. He was disruptive but when he
- 1:03:43wasn't, it, totally created a big chunk play for the other
- 1:03:47offense. So, you know, getting more
- 1:03:50preparation in there. And I think he said the
- 1:03:52maturity, I know he had a son, what?
- 1:03:55Right at the end of the season or so that definitely, we can
- 1:04:01speak to that. That definitely matures you
- 1:04:03pretty quick. So you can even if you have one
- 1:04:05at 29 like me and you're still just a man show.
- 1:04:08Child but it'll mature you up real quick.
- 1:04:11Yeah so so for sure they're talked about Dax and sliding
- 1:04:17into Mike and that's going to be a big move for him.
- 1:04:19I know we've talked about that a little bit earlier in some of
- 1:04:24the other things we were talking about.
- 1:04:27For the, for the offseason grades and stuff like that.
- 1:04:29But Dax moving to Mike is going to be big for his improved and I
- 1:04:35think you're going to see a pretty big jump in the quality
- 1:04:37of his play. I don't think you're going to
- 1:04:40see quite as many decks haters out there and I get the decks
- 1:04:44hate. I gotta understand it.
- 1:04:48It's definitely, I mean there's there's elements of like, the
- 1:04:51whole the fanbase doesn't help it because the fanbase embraced
- 1:04:57him right away and sometimes when you put a guy on a pedestal
- 1:05:02that hasn't put the product on the field to earn necessarily
- 1:05:07that recognition, there's there's blowback, right?
- 1:05:10You see it all the time you saw with Tim Tebow, for example in
- 1:05:13the NFL. I mean there's so many classic
- 1:05:16examples of guys that They get put on a pedestal based on
- 1:05:20whether it's character, whether it's their recruiting rankings,
- 1:05:23whether it's, you know, how they play out the gate, whatever it
- 1:05:28is, they get elevated to an expectation level out the gate.
- 1:05:32And then when they don't want some of those expectations going
- 1:05:35forward, Yeah, you get you get some blowback from certain parts
- 1:05:39of the fan base and there's a me some people that's that, you
- 1:05:42know, keep him on there and that's where that friction is
- 1:05:44created. Right?
- 1:05:45So we've got guys, it's that's still keep Dax at this pedestal
- 1:05:49level that we expected him to play at and then there's
- 1:05:52everybody else and saying, well he's not playing at that level.
- 1:05:54Stop putting him up there. You know.
- 1:05:56Yeah you get that element. But the Jacks point and we've
- 1:06:02said it in the past, that's wasn't a backer.
- 1:06:07The reason that you play backers because he understood his
- 1:06:09liabilities and he tried to minimize them but he said it
- 1:06:12straight up. His size is physical.
- 1:06:14Makeup is more suited for Mike as the borderline athleticism
- 1:06:18played backer, but not the full blown that you need to.
- 1:06:21And then he kind of complimented that Dax is more of a
- 1:06:24quarterback on the defense well that couldn't be the quarterback
- 1:06:27because Brooke was a hell of a quarterback on defense.
- 1:06:30So, back again, didn't get to show that sort of leadership
- 1:06:34role in the mic. Yes, he's The rah-rah guy.
- 1:06:37Yes. He claps his hands.
- 1:06:38Yes. He swings the towel, which you
- 1:06:40need that sort of energy. I think you're going to see a
- 1:06:42little bit different, you talked about and being the quarterback,
- 1:06:46him being the coach on the field in Brian, you've mentioned a
- 1:06:49couple times to me, you know, So many times it's like deck was in
- 1:06:57the right spot but he couldn't finish or you know Dak just was
- 1:07:02once a quarter step behind where he needed to be at the back or
- 1:07:06spot. Yep.
- 1:07:08Dax was rarely out of position. Dax's problem was that Dax
- 1:07:14couldn't athletically. Hang with some of the
- 1:07:16responsibilities he was given and sometimes when he was there
- 1:07:20to make a play sometimes you miss a tackle or he'd get
- 1:07:23absorbed. by block, but Again, I say it all the time like you
- 1:07:31know 60% of a good defensive play is being where the fuck you
- 1:07:35need to be. And he pretty much every play he
- 1:07:39was wearing needed to be. So now he that's a start that's
- 1:07:43a start in now he's the quarterback of the defense.
- 1:07:47He's playing in a position where he won't be as much of a
- 1:07:49liability athletically. Yep.
- 1:07:52So I think you're going to see some good things from him.
- 1:07:54I want to see him work on. Tackling I want to see him work
- 1:07:57on shedding blocks. That's still going to be two
- 1:07:59areas that he has to get better in regardless of backer or Mike
- 1:08:05and he's going to have to get better.
- 1:08:07Especially at shedding the blocks from the mic perspective.
- 1:08:09But I think overall, I think he's going to do a good job.
- 1:08:13I think you're probably going to see.
- 1:08:16I think he in this system, he's going to be better than Rook
- 1:08:20because we saw get kind of exposed a little bit because of
- 1:08:26his at lack of athleticism last year.
- 1:08:29And his probably not quite being at his peak level of
- 1:08:33conditioning coming into Camp because so this system having
- 1:08:39more athletic linebackers is better.
- 1:08:41So you're talking about a guy that's already was playing in a
- 1:08:46any area that requires more athleticism last year and moving
- 1:08:49him into an area that requires less.
- 1:08:52But like I said, I think out the gate, he's a better athlete than
- 1:08:56Rook, but he's going to have to work on some of those other
- 1:08:59things. A truck was really good at like
- 1:09:01not getting blocked because at that shit Excel.
- 1:09:05Yeah, yes and shedding. Good Lord could look for we jump
- 1:09:10over JC price one last little quote from Jack in thing about
- 1:09:19this brand he says man coach Fuente is a very loyal human
- 1:09:23being very little coach, reminds me of somebody else.
- 1:09:27It was in Blacksburg. And many times, we screamed as
- 1:09:32fans, we want people fired and people didn't get fired.
- 1:09:36And Bud said it, you keep hearing it even from these young
- 1:09:40guys coming in about how they remind, Current coach with
- 1:09:46former coach. Yep.
- 1:09:48But let's jump up. JC, who played for that former
- 1:09:51coach. And when the first line comes
- 1:09:54out of his mouth is, it's my dream to return to Blacksburg
- 1:09:57man. That's it man.
- 1:10:02You know they hired the right person?
- 1:10:03Yep. Nothing else needed to be said
- 1:10:07about that higher when he said that, I mean the Jaycees a
- 1:10:12legend, you know, it was part of that 95 team and everything but
- 1:10:18he's coming in, he's a veteran, he's a grinder and, you know, He
- 1:10:26already has somewhat of a relationship with people on the
- 1:10:29staff. You know, he had been invited by
- 1:10:31for one day to the summer camps coming down from Huntington, you
- 1:10:35know, essentially Scout players and some people say, well, why
- 1:10:37would you do that? It's done all over the place
- 1:10:40that, you know, don't say it's not and you know, you wrote this
- 1:10:47down. Brian.
- 1:10:47I want to credit with it, but you feel like JC is a guy that
- 1:10:53is going to provide that will provide an input.
- 1:10:56Understand, he's part of a whole.
- 1:10:59Yeah. And where would I put that in?
- 1:11:00Was when he was asked and he actually asked for a
- 1:11:04clarification about the question kind of asked about what things
- 1:11:09from his experience at Virginia Tech can he used to mold and
- 1:11:14change what's happening on the current staff?
- 1:11:16And he's more. He seems like a guy that will
- 1:11:21speak up when there's something to be said, but realizing that
- 1:11:26His perspective is not the one. I'm not the only one that
- 1:11:29matters and he wants to kind of work within the framework of
- 1:11:32what the program is working towards and understands his role
- 1:11:36but also understands that he is going to be leaned on for some
- 1:11:40of this thing because he does have ties to the Glory Days.
- 1:11:45If you will, he does have ties to the former staff.
- 1:11:47He does understand what it takes to win at this University.
- 1:11:52So there are elements that he's going to bring that, he's going
- 1:11:55to be the guy that sleeps. Leaned on.
- 1:11:57But he also understands that, you know, his voice isn't the
- 1:12:01one that needs to be the loudest all the time.
- 1:12:04Yeah. And you see that that's, that's
- 1:12:09kind of a type of person. You mean, because I have a
- 1:12:11feeling when his voice does Get Loud, people will listen.
- 1:12:14He also discussed his relationship with J Hamm in
- 1:12:18actually similar to Jack. We just discussed.
- 1:12:21Jack had some offers They offered J hammock position when
- 1:12:26he was in that director of player Personnel position.
- 1:12:30They offered him an on-field position and obviously he
- 1:12:32declined it and that got J Hamm where he is obviously it goes
- 1:12:37back when you know JC was a ga that's one hand was playing here
- 1:12:41man. Yep.
- 1:12:42So those guys go back, you know close to 20 years and you know
- 1:12:47again You know, it's just cool to see that and then the other
- 1:12:55piece, which I think I'm sure you would have loved to been
- 1:12:58sitting in this room. Brian is, you know, really
- 1:13:01didn't know, you know really, you know really know Bill.
- 1:13:08Yeah. And then comes in they
- 1:13:10immediately get together and what are they gonna do?
- 1:13:13They chop it up talking football for four hours and you know, I
- 1:13:18think there's a there's a good relationship there because I
- 1:13:21think you know he kind of talked about it.
- 1:13:23They don't necessarily have what you would call mirror images of
- 1:13:28philosophy on defensive line play, but I think that's a good
- 1:13:31thing because that kind of pushes Each other to kind of,
- 1:13:35listen to the other, you know, see what else is out there.
- 1:13:39You know, you don't want to just get in that mindset of my ways.
- 1:13:42The right way, you're always wanted to grow.
- 1:13:45You want to learn having a guy with somewhat different
- 1:13:48philosophies at the same position.
- 1:13:51I think it's going to be a good thing because I think each of
- 1:13:53them will push each other and and grow from from the
- 1:13:57experience that the other brains I mean, bills God.
- 1:14:00You know, a lot of that NFL type X's and O's things like that.
- 1:14:06And I think JC may have he's got a lot of that as well, but I
- 1:14:09think he's got some of the soft skills.
- 1:14:10And some of the understanding on the recruiting Trail and in the
- 1:14:14how the college systems work that I think Bill can learn a
- 1:14:18lot from. So I think there's going to be
- 1:14:20that give and take from that perspective not just the X's and
- 1:14:23O's and scheme and philosophy of defensive line play that you
- 1:14:27know, is a little bit similar to a little bit different but it
- 1:14:30sounds like Like they have good chemistry.
- 1:14:32Oh yeah, I think that's you know, that healthy dialogue is
- 1:14:35going to be a good thing for the defense of wine.
- 1:14:38Oh absolutely. And again I think again it's
- 1:14:42having that extra voice in there and you know to where Daryl had
- 1:14:47played in a lot of built here like systems so he sort of
- 1:14:52understood what Bill wanted to do and it was very much Polly Y
- 1:14:55Bar no King long so bad or so fast was annual Bill wanted to
- 1:15:01do, he taught him and if this cake They have, you know,
- 1:15:05they're not perfect on philosophy, but they probably
- 1:15:08have enough of over line where, you know, example this year,
- 1:15:14bills working with the ends. Hey I need you to go work with
- 1:15:18George. Let's work with, you know, the
- 1:15:20X's and O's piece. They see God.
- 1:15:22Let me go to your point too. I think JC with his voice is
- 1:15:25going to say sometimes. Hey, let's, let's look at it
- 1:15:29this way and I think for bills, probably going to help him grow
- 1:15:32a little bit too. But again overall that that's a
- 1:15:36good thing. It's a really good.
- 1:15:38Let's talk about this. Okay, so I'll be we're both
- 1:15:40married to teachers yes. Okay so let's say A defensive
- 1:15:49scheme is like a curriculum. There are several different ways
- 1:15:54to get to that end game. There's different philosophies
- 1:15:58or different things right there. Teachers are constantly learning
- 1:16:02different ways to get to the same end point.
- 1:16:04This is the same type of thing in their endpoint, is more or
- 1:16:08less in the same ballpark. They might have a little bit of
- 1:16:13different way of getting there and learning different ways to
- 1:16:15get. There is going to help them
- 1:16:17translate that because honestly much like students not every
- 1:16:23Player is going to pick up and learn in the same way or in the
- 1:16:27same fashion and respond to the same type of criticism or same
- 1:16:30type of critique. So that's going to be a good
- 1:16:33thing. Long-term I did like and this
- 1:16:36was kind of a part of levity of the the interview the question
- 1:16:42about where was the first place? He ate when he got to Blacksburg
- 1:16:44or any places that were still still popular from his Heyday.
- 1:16:49He says a coin flip he cases McAdoo's America dues one when
- 1:16:55it got the when he got the I guess the probably a Hindenburg
- 1:16:59where you think, you think you think he crushes the Hindenburg
- 1:17:02think he could crush Hindenburg. Maybe someday.
- 1:17:05I think I've heard tell that McAdoo's is a hell of a place
- 1:17:09for for recruits. Oh yes.
- 1:17:11It's, you know, be there with recruits.
- 1:17:14It's awesome. You meet their courage, their
- 1:17:16you have a sandwich. You talk about football, you
- 1:17:20know? Well, you know, that's part of
- 1:17:21it is, the menu is so big that you literally get your
- 1:17:25recruiting pitch done, but now the request of screw them in
- 1:17:28you. And then once the pitch is done,
- 1:17:32you point them to the best piece of the menu for that particular
- 1:17:36player and then you essentially get the commit on spot.
- 1:17:40Yeah. I've heard defunct podcast like
- 1:17:42to ask for interviews there too. Not this part.
- 1:17:49Let's do talk about him. He's obviously got the
- 1:17:52recruiting title role and he kind of was talking about it.
- 1:17:57It's more or less. He's the guy that's going to be,
- 1:17:59we need to look at films on recruits.
- 1:18:01Have you made the call here? It sounds like it's more of a,
- 1:18:05he's more of a logistical guy. And again, JC biggest person in
- 1:18:10that room, my assumption is, if Jesse speaks about have you, you
- 1:18:14know, have you looked at tape of Tom?
- 1:18:18I don't know. Sean Asbury and I know he's like
- 1:18:20a top tent here. Hey Jackie looked at as berries
- 1:18:22tape you talk to his trainer, you talk to anybody on him this
- 1:18:26week. I mean it seems like it's almost
- 1:18:28that's going to be a checklist type thing for him like and you
- 1:18:34know some code says yeah I can't get in touch with anybody will
- 1:18:38hold on. DM the number over to him?
- 1:18:41Call this guy. Yep, this is it, that type of
- 1:18:44thing, make it making sure that, you know, all right, we got this
- 1:18:49guy coming to campus. Make sure you're watching his
- 1:18:52fucking tape this week, so you're prepared to discuss this
- 1:18:55that and the third victims. Make sure that you're reviewing,
- 1:18:58you know, family members this. So that, you know, names you
- 1:19:02understand the relationships, you understand who plays a key
- 1:19:04role in this player's life so that you can relate to them as
- 1:19:10best as you can. Because I think that's another
- 1:19:13part of it, that You know, the coaches, obviously, they
- 1:19:19recruit. They're trying to get the best
- 1:19:20players, but it's about building relationships.
- 1:19:22So if you're not doing the homework on that, that's going
- 1:19:26to show up when it's time to kind of close the deal.
- 1:19:30Absolutely. And going back, he had that
- 1:19:33personal story. JC essentially grew up kind of
- 1:19:37out in the rural areas of Maryland.
- 1:19:40Pretty highly recruited player to a point where Powerhouse
- 1:19:43DeMatha, you know Brian. You know we heard They wanted to
- 1:19:47come, get him his senior year but the coach that they brought
- 1:19:51into his high school was kind of a well-known coach winner and he
- 1:19:56convinced him to stay at his high school, not make the hour,
- 1:20:01commute both ways every day to go down to a Powerhouse and you
- 1:20:07know talk about staying home and everything but that starts one
- 1:20:11of these three things that I think he's going to bring it ate
- 1:20:15at selling point, right? There.
- 1:20:17Whatever that coach said to him, I have a feeling instilled and
- 1:20:20then him about staying home, doing it at home.
- 1:20:24That's one story but brine the next one that he revealed me and
- 1:20:31you I think we talked about it, 20 minutes, he revealed.
- 1:20:33His is degrees. Yep.
- 1:20:38You got the the liberal arts and science degree which at the time
- 1:20:42he said, was essentially three minors that add up to a major
- 1:20:47because he wanted. And he talked about, he because
- 1:20:49he wanted to be a coach. So this is, this was his ideas
- 1:20:52like very well. So I want to be a coach.
- 1:20:53So, three minors that can they can build to a major for me.
- 1:20:57Scioscia sociology, physical education.
- 1:21:00In African-American studies. And that tells me right there
- 1:21:03that this God understands, what it's going to take to be a coach
- 1:21:08and what it's going to take to fill in any blind spots that he
- 1:21:11may have and working with people, that may have different
- 1:21:17life stories or understanding understanding how they tick, and
- 1:21:22also just the physical education part of it or just understanding
- 1:21:26how to get guys in their Peak Performance to go out there.
- 1:21:29On the field and do what they need to do.
- 1:21:33Absolutely. And when he when he mentioned
- 1:21:36that about those degrees, it was just like again, he is from and
- 1:21:42I'm not sure if it's world. But it's not your it's not your
- 1:21:45Baltimore propers or, you know, down into areas like that, he
- 1:21:49had his background and he said, if I'm going to be a coach, I've
- 1:21:54got to understand, I understand my background.
- 1:21:57I'm going to have people that I run to their similar to me.
- 1:21:59We're going to connect. Boom, great.
- 1:22:01I want to understand everyone. I touch.
- 1:22:03Ouch. And, you know, obviously he knew
- 1:22:07that, you know, the African American studies, you know, I've
- 1:22:13got African-American teammates. I want to understand what goes
- 1:22:16on. I want to know more about them.
- 1:22:18I want to be able to connect with them man.
- 1:22:20That just tells a lot about him as a human being Brian.
- 1:22:24You know what else tells you a lot about the human being is
- 1:22:28when he discussed the 95 store? Man?
- 1:22:31Yep. For you.
- 1:22:33Younger people. Go back.
- 1:22:34Look nice. E5 is a great season. 95 started
- 1:22:38off shitty jib really really shitty, you know, back-to-back
- 1:22:46losses. The second being who, you know,
- 1:22:50Cincinnati at Lane stadium. And you I think I've heard
- 1:22:54stories it was like the pouring down rain the opening loss was
- 1:22:57to Boston College. And you know, you kind of hear
- 1:23:03JC talking about it said in the locker room after the game.
- 1:23:07Gang with just as miserable feeling and then having to watch
- 1:23:11the tape the next day. And he didn't say it, but I
- 1:23:17think he didn't say it in the way.
- 1:23:20Brian. I think you assume this is what
- 1:23:22he said it, right. Yeah, I said he said we're not
- 1:23:27losing the end. I said we fucking losing again.
- 1:23:32Because I mean again JC kind of reminds me a lot of he kind of
- 1:23:39reminds me a combination of my offensive line coach and I
- 1:23:42wasn't him and Sydney Keith conlon and our good buddy
- 1:23:47hambone. Robbie come tonight if you put
- 1:23:50those two guys together, that that's who Jason kind of reminds
- 1:23:53me of and that's something I could see them them saying in
- 1:23:57that scenario, like we fucking losing again.
- 1:24:00Really. And then not just saying it, not
- 1:24:02just saying it, but putting that shit into action doubling down
- 1:24:06on studies doubling, down, on practice doubling down on film.
- 1:24:10All of the things you need to do to have success on the field.
- 1:24:13Yeah. And obviously, everybody knows
- 1:24:15what happens the next week they go out, beat Miami.
- 1:24:20As the white said last week back 98 when he finished it up. 95
- 1:24:24was the first of four straight 99 made it five straight in.
- 1:24:30Basically, they didn't lose another game.
- 1:24:33It didn't lose another game to come back at UVA.
- 1:24:37The Sugar Bowl, win over Texas. It tells you about his mentality
- 1:24:42to and, you know, there's been times.
- 1:24:49Under this current coaching regime.
- 1:24:51You know, a lot of times we see a lot of fight but sometimes You
- 1:24:57just feel like sometimes the players aren't.
- 1:25:02I don't want to say it because you see them play their asses
- 1:25:04off, but you feel like sometimes they just turn it off.
- 1:25:08I don't think they see prices going to let people in that
- 1:25:10locker room turn and yeah I don't I don't think it's lack of
- 1:25:14effort. I think sometimes it's lack of
- 1:25:15focus, like I think they give effort, I think the focus is
- 1:25:21where we see a lack on some of those things.
- 1:25:23I think that having a guy that understands setting a goal
- 1:25:28setting the things up to achieve that goal and holding everyone
- 1:25:36accountable at all. X towards that, that go
- 1:25:41responsibility, I think is going to be important for this team
- 1:25:45going forward because I mean, this is a guy that You know, we
- 1:25:49talked about Virginia Tech but I mean this this is one of the
- 1:25:54guys that built what Virginia Tech is and what Virginia Tech
- 1:25:57became and he understands he saw both sides of it.
- 1:26:04I mean, he saw the downs and he saw the ups and he saw, you
- 1:26:08know, what we were and what we became Just In His short time in
- 1:26:14Blacksburg. And I think that that matters
- 1:26:18and I think going back to the point earlier, I think that's
- 1:26:21what that question was trying to be trying to ask is that, you
- 1:26:27know, are there lessons from your time as a player here that
- 1:26:33you can bring to the table and help this team?
- 1:26:37Take the next step. Yeah.
- 1:26:39And it is he has them. Braun.
- 1:26:44I'm going to we're going to stop the Virginia Tech talk there.
- 1:26:47Before we wrap the episode up, I need your 90 second analysis of
- 1:26:54the Carson Wentz trade, I think, in terms of It being a
- 1:27:02relatively safe, relatively cap friendly, All Things Considered,
- 1:27:08I think, in terms of being able to move off of it, if it doesn't
- 1:27:11work out, I think it was a good trade.
- 1:27:16I would have preferred Stafford. I probably would have also
- 1:27:20preferred Donald if we could have got him for a similar.
- 1:27:29Similar trade package and obviously his the cost would
- 1:27:32have been lower in terms of the immediate contract.
- 1:27:36So I think if we were to pull that off, I think I would have
- 1:27:38been fine with it. I'm still waiting to see on
- 1:27:42whence. I think if he can stay on the
- 1:27:43field and working with Frank Reich again.
- 1:27:48I think that's going to be a good thing for him.
- 1:27:51The problem I have is that I need to see this guy play more
- 1:27:53than 12 games in the season. Proof.
- 1:27:59But the Alamos truth is you said Frank right if there's anyone
- 1:28:02that can fix him. It's Frank Wright.
- 1:28:04If Frank Wright fixes him? I hate y'all because if you like
- 1:28:11I said, we did a ton and contract.
- 1:28:16He's bringing on board is that if it doesn't work this year and
- 1:28:18next year, we're pretty much off the hook with no more dead money
- 1:28:22and space handicapped space too. Because of the luck retirement
- 1:28:30Hill Rivers will have one year. He gets fixed.
- 1:28:34I mean, y'all are essentially have a 10-year order back.
- 1:28:36Yeah. And y'all have a front office
- 1:28:39that knows how to draft. So think we're going to take
- 1:28:43Christian darussalam. First round if everything works
- 1:28:45out. The way I'm hoping and aerosol,
- 1:28:49dude, I had that's also mocks. He's flying up in the top 10
- 1:28:52now. Yeah, he's anywhere between like
- 1:28:54nine and Twenty Eight, depending on.
- 1:28:57So mocks depends on how that thing breaks.
- 1:29:01We've got it. We could potentially move up
- 1:29:03though. So we've actually got got some
- 1:29:06action where we can move up. Up.
- 1:29:07So if he's, who we're targeting or something, if we're
- 1:29:11comfortable with, if we're comfortable with the first four
- 1:29:14or five tackles, then I think we're fine to sit where we're
- 1:29:16at. Yeah, but if we've got a
- 1:29:20certain, you know, one, two, three in that top five that we,
- 1:29:24absolutely, if we feel like we can get him, we're going to try
- 1:29:27to get him then. I think I can see us moving up
- 1:29:30and making that play, and if all of them are gone, by the time we
- 1:29:33get around, I could see us trading back and, you know, make
- 1:29:37getting an To pick in the second round.
- 1:29:38So absolutely do. All right.
