- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcasts on the Brink.
- 0:20Speaker 1: It is Thursday, April tenth college basketball season officially over.
- 0:24Speaker 1: What a great Final four and National Championship game? We
- 0:27Speaker 1: had just a great tournament in general. Before we get
- 0:31Speaker 1: to this week's episode with my Dadrick Bosage of WDRB

- 1:02Speaker 1: dot com. How'd your bracket do in the tournament this year?
- 1:07Speaker 1: I had Houston winning, so I came up just short.
- 1:12Speaker 2: You know, we always have to post one like immediately
- 1:16Speaker 2: after the draw comes out, and I'm never really very
- 1:18Speaker 2: happy with it because it's so quick. I didn't answer,
- 1:21Speaker 2: I didn't enter any pools I should have I had.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I think my final four was Auburn beating Saint John's. Well,
- 1:30Speaker 2: Saint John's didn't make it, and it was Alabama beating Houston.
- 1:37Speaker 2: So I had two of the four teams, but I
- 1:41Speaker 2: didn't have their teams in the championship game.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I was also on a survivor pool that Jay Horry,
- 1:48Speaker 1: who graduated from New Albany. His mom was actually my
- 1:51Speaker 1: math teacher at New Albany, but he runs the survivor
- 1:54Speaker 1: pool every year in the tournament and I'm always usually
- 1:58Speaker 1: out like the first weekend, but this year was so
- 2:02Speaker 1: so few upsets that actually me and my brother in
- 2:04Speaker 1: law both made it to final four weekend. The only
- 2:07Speaker 1: teams both of us had left were it who was
- 2:12Speaker 1: on the who was on the side with Florida? Was
- 2:15Speaker 1: it Auburn? Okay, we had Auburn and Duke left, so
- 2:17Speaker 1: both of us picked Auburn and so they were out.
- 2:20Speaker 1: But I think it was the most people that had
- 2:22Speaker 1: ever split that pool. But it kind of just speaks
- 2:24Speaker 1: to the the number of how few upsets there where
- 2:28Speaker 1: it was a It was a great tournament overall, just
- 2:31Speaker 1: with the quality of play. I thought later in the
- 2:32Speaker 1: in the second round and going into Final four weekend,
- 2:35Speaker 1: what did you think just in general of the of
- 2:37Speaker 1: the tournament and how it all worked out.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a really good final four. There weren't
- 2:44Speaker 2: as many off the wall upsets in the early rounds.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know if that's going to be
- 2:52Speaker 2: a continuing trend or not. You know, we didn't see
- 2:54Speaker 2: some of the crazy stuff we've seen in the past.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Didn't seem to be that many super dramatic games or
- 3:02Speaker 2: like breakout players. Coaches kind of ruled the whole thing.
- 3:06Speaker 2: But it was a good tournament. There's always a letdown
- 3:09Speaker 2: after the season's over because there may be multi November.
- 3:11Speaker 2: But it was a good tournament. And the other thing
- 3:15Speaker 2: that makes it hard for me to judge is there's
- 3:17Speaker 2: so much other stuff going on in college basketball when
- 3:19Speaker 2: the tournament's going on that sometimes it's hard to actually
- 3:22Speaker 2: focus on the tournament. There's all these coaching changes, there's
- 3:25Speaker 2: portal activity. I think sometimes that distracts from the tournament.
- 3:30Speaker 2: It's it's hard to follow it all.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I was I've been thinking about this a little bit.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I mean, I don't I don't know that there's a
- 3:37Speaker 1: way that they would be able to move the tournament
- 3:41Speaker 1: up because I know that CBS likes to have the
- 3:44Speaker 1: Final Four and then the Masters back to back weekends.
- 3:47Speaker 1: It's like a big thing for them. But I just
- 3:50Speaker 1: think the mechanics of the whole thing has become a
- 3:52Speaker 1: bit chaotic from the standpoint of I know they moved
- 3:55Speaker 1: back to portal a week this year, but it was
- 3:58Speaker 1: it's still opened, you know, with with teams left in
- 4:02Speaker 1: the tournament a ton of teams, and Izzo made some
- 4:05Speaker 1: pretty you know, Izzo's always outspoken, but made some comments
- 4:09Speaker 1: about well if I get if I lose some ground
- 4:11Speaker 1: in the portal, I'm not gonna worry about it. I've
- 4:13Speaker 1: got to focus on my season. And I mean, I
- 4:15Speaker 1: guess in one way, it's an advantage for the teams
- 4:17Speaker 1: that are out to get the head start on the portal,
- 4:20Speaker 1: but the teams that are still in disadvantage. Can you
- 4:24Speaker 1: just thinking out loud here, Can you think of any
- 4:27Speaker 1: way they could change the system to make it more
- 4:29Speaker 1: equitable for everybody? Is it moving back to the portal
- 4:33Speaker 1: a little bit more and lowering the number of days
- 4:37Speaker 1: to enter. I mean last year it was forty five
- 4:39Speaker 1: days I believe to enter. This year it's thirty. It
- 4:42Speaker 1: still seems like that's a pretty long period for guys
- 4:46Speaker 1: to be able to enter. I mean, I think you
- 4:47Speaker 1: maybe could even cut it down by another week and
- 4:50Speaker 1: at least maybe have it open a week later. But
- 4:53Speaker 1: the chaos of it all, I agree with you from
- 4:55Speaker 1: standpoint of you know, fan bases around the country, once
- 5:00Speaker 1: their team loses, they're not so focused on the tournament anymore.
- 5:04Speaker 1: They're just focused on the portal and who their teams
- 5:07Speaker 1: are going. I know in Indiana that's kind of been
- 5:09Speaker 1: the focus now since the end of the season. It's
- 5:12Speaker 1: all transfer portal, guys entering, and who's Indiana going to
- 5:14Speaker 1: get from the portal.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the problem is that it's such a
- 5:18Speaker 2: contrast to professional sports and professional sports. You know, the
- 5:23Speaker 2: NFL Super Bowl ds in February, free agency starts in March.
- 5:27Speaker 2: In the NBA, the season ends in June. Free agency
- 5:30Speaker 2: starts early July. Baseball the World Series ends in late
- 5:35Speaker 2: October early November, and then there's most free agents will
- 5:39Speaker 2: start signing somewhere to December. I understand why collegists can't
- 5:43Speaker 2: do it that way because of academic years and all
- 5:45Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. But it's a distraction to the
- 5:49Speaker 2: rest of the tournament, I think, and I you know,
- 5:51Speaker 2: moving it back another week would probably be helpful. So
- 5:53Speaker 2: the only teams that aren't involved are the final four teams.
- 5:58Speaker 2: But even if they do that, people are still going
- 6:03Speaker 2: to be making deals and talking to people behind the scenes.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I'm sure that, I mean, that goes on during the season,
- 6:07Speaker 2: so right, I don't know that's I'm sure a lot
- 6:10Speaker 2: of fans don't care about it. To me, it was
- 6:11Speaker 2: just sort of I think it just it takes away
- 6:14Speaker 2: from the tournament because it's always team loses and the
- 6:19Speaker 2: next day, five guys go into portal. You know, it's
- 6:23Speaker 2: it's such a whirlwind activity. There's no cohesiveness or continuity
- 6:28Speaker 2: to it all.
- 6:29Speaker 1: And that's one reason I wonder why it needs to
- 6:33Speaker 1: be thirty days Because the season ends and guys are
- 6:35Speaker 1: going in the portal the next day. They most of
- 6:38Speaker 1: these guys already know what they're going to do, So
- 6:40Speaker 1: why does it need to be a thirty day window.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Maybe make it the Monday after the National Championship game
- 6:46Speaker 1: and let it go till the end of April or
- 6:47Speaker 1: something like that. I understand, like you said, for the
- 6:49Speaker 1: for the even though it's hard to sometimes look at
- 6:53Speaker 1: this from a an academic perspective because a lot of
- 6:57Speaker 1: a lot of this it's it's changed into professional sports
- 7:00Speaker 1: with the deals that are being made and everything. But
- 7:03Speaker 1: obviously the timing of it is such that guys have
- 7:08Speaker 1: to figure out where they're going to go by summer
- 7:12Speaker 1: and you know, enroll in a new school, So that
- 7:14Speaker 1: that's kind of why the timing of it all is
- 7:16Speaker 1: what it is. One reason I wanted to have you
- 7:18Speaker 1: on this week was just to talk about your column
- 7:20Speaker 1: that you did earlier in the week on Monday over
- 7:22Speaker 1: at WDRB dot com. I'm going to put a link
- 7:24Speaker 1: to that in the show notes for anyone who hasn't
- 7:26Speaker 1: had a chance to read it. But you did some
- 7:28Speaker 1: research on the two teams that made the National Championship game,
- 7:31Speaker 1: Gonzaga and Florida in terms of the transfer portal rankings
- 7:36Speaker 1: and also the recruiting rankings, the traditional recruiting rankings. What
- 7:40Speaker 1: what what stood? What did you find? I guess first
- 7:43Speaker 1: for for those that haven't read the column, actually just
- 7:46Speaker 1: going to read it, but what did you what were
- 7:49Speaker 1: your takeaways from that and what did the data tell
- 7:51Speaker 1: you about how maybe this tournament was different and maybe
- 7:55Speaker 1: how it relates to what we can expect in the
- 7:57Speaker 1: future in college basketball.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I guess my primary takeaway is that if you have
- 8:01Speaker 2: the right coach, and he's a good coach, he's got
- 8:03Speaker 2: a good eye for talent and the talent that fits
- 8:05Speaker 2: in his system, and he can develop players, you can win.
- 8:09Speaker 2: You don't have to have four and five stars. I
- 8:12Speaker 2: think I tweeted out there were more zero star high
- 8:14Speaker 2: school replayers in the championship game than there were four
- 8:18Speaker 2: star players. There were two zero star recruits guys who
- 8:21Speaker 2: weren't ranked at all, and one four star recruit. And
- 8:24Speaker 2: among recruiting classes, neither Houston nor Florida had a top
- 8:30Speaker 2: twenty high school class the previous three seasons, and only
- 8:34Speaker 2: Florida had a top twenty. I think it was portal class, correct.
- 8:40Speaker 2: I think it was twenty twenty two. Maybe you mentioned
- 8:42Speaker 2: it was, yeah, And that was just one player I
- 8:43Speaker 2: think left from that class, Will Richard, who was like
- 8:45Speaker 2: the first recruit that Todd Golden got at Florida. So
- 8:51Speaker 2: it's really a hat tip to Calvin Sampson that he
- 8:54Speaker 2: gets guys he doesn't care where they're ranked. He gets
- 8:57Speaker 2: guys that want to play the way he plays and
- 8:59Speaker 2: are good at it and coaches them into being, you know,
- 9:03Speaker 2: productive players. And I think I also had a take
- 9:08Speaker 2: away from it that there were a lot of older
- 9:09Speaker 2: players that you know, there were a lot of seniors
- 9:11Speaker 2: and juniors that played the freshman got beat and looked
- 9:14Speaker 2: like freshmen in the last ten and a half minutes
- 9:16Speaker 2: of the game for Duke against Houston. But the main
- 9:20Speaker 2: takeaway is, you know, it used to be, especially when
- 9:24Speaker 2: Cala Perry had it rolled in Kentucky and then coach
- 9:27Speaker 2: k that the five star, number one recruiting class guys
- 9:32Speaker 2: were really good. Kentucky had that team in twenty fifteen.
- 9:35Speaker 2: They didn't win it all, but they had Towns and
- 9:38Speaker 2: Booker and Trey Lyles and the Harrison twins and Willie
- 9:43Speaker 2: Carley Stein and all those dudes. Duke had OAKA four
- 9:46Speaker 2: and just Justice Winslow and Grayson Allen and Tyas Jones,
- 9:51Speaker 2: and you can look, you know, through the years, you
- 9:55Speaker 2: had to have four and five star players to win
- 9:57Speaker 2: it all. It's not that way anymore. You can and
- 10:00Speaker 2: get guys who were not or overlooked and then what
- 10:06Speaker 2: Florida especially did was they went and got guys who
- 10:09Speaker 2: proved themselves at other schools. I mean, Walter Clayton was
- 10:12Speaker 2: a guy that wasn't ranked at all. He was ranked
- 10:16Speaker 2: higher as a football player than he was as a
- 10:17Speaker 2: basketball player. He didn't want to play football, so he
- 10:21Speaker 2: signed with Rick Patino and played at Iona for two
- 10:23Speaker 2: years and was really good. When Patina went to Saint John's,
- 10:25Speaker 2: he didn't go with him. He wanted to go back
- 10:27Speaker 2: home and play for Florida. Will Richards started out at Belmont.
- 10:32Speaker 2: You know that Condon was a decently ranked and he
- 10:38Speaker 2: might have been top one hundred player from Australia right
- 10:43Speaker 2: to the huff guy is a huff for hawk. I
- 10:45Speaker 2: don't know how you pronounce it. Sure he was ranked
- 10:48Speaker 2: to twenty something from Pennsylvania and Florida was he liked
- 10:53Speaker 2: Florida because he was a Florida football fan, or he
- 10:55Speaker 2: liked at school Colors or whatever in Florida was smart
- 10:59Speaker 2: enough to take him, and he's a really good player.
- 11:02Speaker 1: So Elijah Martin's another one right zero.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Star recruit who started at Florida Atlantic and they you
- 11:09Speaker 2: know so, and it reinforces the narrative that the teams
- 11:15Speaker 2: that are not in the Power five conference have in
- 11:17Speaker 2: some way become like the you know, the Triple A
- 11:20Speaker 2: or Double A farm teams of the top college basketball programs.
- 11:25Speaker 2: And we're going to see that again this year with
- 11:28Speaker 2: a lot of guys moving up from those schools into
- 11:32Speaker 2: Power five schools because of the nil opportunities that are there.
- 11:36Speaker 1: So do you think we're past the era of like
- 11:39Speaker 1: the one and done teams being you know, I don't
- 11:44Speaker 1: want to say dominant in college basketball? We did. We
- 11:48Speaker 1: did just see Duke make it to the Final four
- 11:51Speaker 1: and have a chance to win. Have they not collapsed
- 11:53Speaker 1: in the late last ten minutes? But a confuson But
- 11:56Speaker 1: do you think that era now with the portal being
- 11:59Speaker 1: what it is. I mean, there's high school kids I
- 12:02Speaker 1: know of right now that are you know, top one hundred,
- 12:06Speaker 1: top two hundred recruits in the country right now that
- 12:09Speaker 1: haven't committed anywhere. And I think a big reason of
- 12:12Speaker 1: that is because right now everyone's so focused on the portal,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and these guys may get you know, left until late April,
- 12:20Speaker 1: early May, and even some of the higher ranked high
- 12:25Speaker 1: school kids you just don't hear as much about them
- 12:28Speaker 1: as you do now the top portal guys. I mean,
- 12:30Speaker 1: this is this kid that's gonna reportedly visit Indiana, Kentucky,
- 12:36Speaker 1: Auburn and Old Miss Lamar Wilkers and one of the
- 12:38Speaker 1: top three point shooters in the country. He's getting more
- 12:40Speaker 1: buzz right now on social media and the message boards
- 12:44Speaker 1: and some of the remaining high school kids on the board.
- 12:46Speaker 1: So it kind of speaks to how people have prioritize
- 12:48Speaker 1: the portal. I'm just curious, do you think this is
- 12:52Speaker 1: a product of the COVID year and guys just being
- 12:55Speaker 1: older the last couple of years, or do you think
- 12:57Speaker 1: this is a trend that's here to stay where maybe
- 12:59Speaker 1: fresh and are maybe not as prominent in the sport
- 13:02Speaker 1: moving forward.
- 13:05Speaker 2: I guess what I think is that for most schools,
- 13:08Speaker 2: there are only a couple of schools that have shown
- 13:11Speaker 2: they can really do the one and done thing, and
- 13:13Speaker 2: that was Kentucky with Calipari and Duke and Shire has
- 13:16Speaker 2: done it, you know, beyond the way that coach k
- 13:19Speaker 2: did it. And you're right, if they would have won
- 13:22Speaker 2: that game, then none of this would have we would
- 13:23Speaker 2: have been talking about any of this. But becau it's
- 13:25Speaker 2: a very small number of coaches or programs that can
- 13:29Speaker 2: try and play the one and done game, and somebody
- 13:34Speaker 2: might pull it off. Again. I'm not going to say
- 13:37Speaker 2: they won't, but I think it's a bigger it's a
- 13:38Speaker 2: much wider path to go the other way that you
- 13:41Speaker 2: can find guys, and and there's a lot more guys
- 13:44Speaker 2: in the portal than there are guys who are good
- 13:47Speaker 2: enough to really be dominant players as high school freshmen,
- 13:50Speaker 2: and schools are going to back away. I think some
- 13:52Speaker 2: coaches are going to back away from recruiting guys that
- 13:54Speaker 2: aren't they aren't convinced they're going to help them from
- 13:57Speaker 2: the very beginning because they're going to coach them for
- 13:59Speaker 2: a year and they're going to disgruddled by not playing,
- 14:01Speaker 2: and they're going to go somewhere else, and then the
- 14:03Speaker 2: next program is going to take advantage of the work
- 14:06Speaker 2: that they put in. So I'd say Duke will keep
- 14:10Speaker 2: doing it, cal Perry will keep doing it in Arkansas,
- 14:13Speaker 2: I don't know. At Hurley's got a good class coming
- 14:16Speaker 2: in next year, so he might be He's he's a
- 14:19Speaker 2: good enough coach and has enough of an ego that
- 14:21Speaker 2: he might think that he can do it and I'm
- 14:22Speaker 2: sure there's going to be some somebody else that will
- 14:25Speaker 2: develop him as a coach and have the belief that
- 14:29Speaker 2: he can find an efficiency. People are always looking for
- 14:32Speaker 2: what can I do that somebody else can do? Uh,
- 14:35Speaker 2: And he'll think that, well, everybody's getting away from the freshman.
- 14:38Speaker 2: I'm going to focus on the freshman. But I think
- 14:41Speaker 2: generally the smartest path is to do it the way
- 14:45Speaker 2: that Florida and Houston did it. But you got to
- 14:47Speaker 2: you got to be good at identifying players and you've
- 14:49Speaker 2: got to be good at developed developing players. That's where
- 14:53Speaker 2: a lot of coaches fall short. And since this is
- 14:57Speaker 2: an EU podcast, you can say what was there? What
- 15:00Speaker 2: was their protoclass ranked last year?
- 15:03Speaker 1: It had to be top five?
- 15:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and it didn't translate into victories because why
- 15:10Speaker 2: I mean, Ballot pretty much had the season that you
- 15:13Speaker 2: thought he would have, but Miles Rice did not, Carlisle
- 15:17Speaker 2: did not, Goody probably did, and langdon Hattan you know,
- 15:22Speaker 2: was inconsequential. So you know it worked for Louisville. I mean,
- 15:28Speaker 2: Javon Hadley outperformed I think what you thought he would.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Chuckie Hepburn absolutely did, Terrence Edwards did so. I think
- 15:38Speaker 2: that's the path. I mean, I think that's that's the
- 15:41Speaker 2: safest path, is the really have it. You've got to
- 15:44Speaker 2: have a good staff that says who's going to be available,
- 15:48Speaker 2: how much are they going to cost, how are they
- 15:49Speaker 2: going to fit together? And the hardest part of it
- 15:51Speaker 2: all to me is to evaluate is what are they
- 15:54Speaker 2: like as people, uh in a locker room and how
- 15:58Speaker 2: coachable are they accepting their roles? Because I look at
- 16:02Speaker 2: Louisville this year and Terrence Edwards came here from being
- 16:06Speaker 2: the he was the most outstanding player in the league
- 16:10Speaker 2: at James Madison except the Sun Belt, I think it was,
- 16:13Speaker 2: and he accepted not being a guy that got a
- 16:17Speaker 2: million shots a game. And you've got to have guys
- 16:21Speaker 2: that are willing guys who leave. Some percent of them
- 16:25Speaker 2: are disgruntled guys, but when they get to their new place,
- 16:28Speaker 2: they got to quit being disgruntled and accept here's what
- 16:32Speaker 2: my role is and this is what I'm here to
- 16:34Speaker 2: do to play for the team and do that. So
- 16:37Speaker 2: you've got to have a good feel for the actual
- 16:41Speaker 2: what motivates a kid and what his intentions are.
- 16:44Speaker 1: The one thing that just popped into my mind, like
- 16:47Speaker 1: kind of the flip side to what we've seen with
- 16:49Speaker 1: the programs that have had complete overhauls is what Purdue
- 16:53Speaker 1: has been able to do over the last several years,
- 16:55Speaker 1: although this spring we've kind of seen that tested for
- 16:59Speaker 1: the first time. They've had some guys leave. I know,
- 17:00Speaker 1: Cam Heidi went to Texas, Miles Colvin went to Wake Forest.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Those are guys that you looked at and said, maybe
- 17:06Speaker 1: if they stay off four years at Perdue, by the
- 17:08Speaker 1: time they're junior senior, they could be a you know,
- 17:10Speaker 1: an All League player, but maybe a little less patient
- 17:14Speaker 1: because of what Braden Smith and Lawyer and Kaufman Wren.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Those are the guys that kind of run the team.
- 17:20Speaker 1: But there's also the model of what Matt Painter's done,
- 17:23Speaker 1: which to credit to him, I haven't seen any other
- 17:25Speaker 1: school be able to retain it, recruit guys, get them
- 17:29Speaker 1: to buy into the long term development plan. Even I
- 17:33Speaker 1: mean Kaufman Wren, he was a guy that picked between
- 17:36Speaker 1: Indiana and Purdue. I believe it. In the end, he
- 17:38Speaker 1: red shirted his first year and now he's stuck it
- 17:41Speaker 1: out there at Purdue and he's become an All Big
- 17:43Speaker 1: Ten type player. So that's kind of the other side.
- 17:46Speaker 1: That to me is also a model that can work.
- 17:48Speaker 1: But you have to speaking to what you said, you
- 17:51Speaker 1: have to be able to have a system that has
- 17:55Speaker 1: proven over time that you can develop guys and make
- 17:57Speaker 1: them better and show them that when they get to
- 18:00Speaker 1: a certain point in their career, they're going to have
- 18:01Speaker 1: the role that they want. Otherwise, you know, a guy
- 18:04Speaker 1: comes in for one year, doesn't play very much, and
- 18:07Speaker 1: he's got ten schools calling him and said, well, you
- 18:10Speaker 1: only played, you know, eight minutes per game. We can
- 18:12Speaker 1: get you twenty five minutes per game and a little
- 18:14Speaker 1: bit more nil, and then all of a sudden they're
- 18:16Speaker 1: in the portal and gone. So to me, that's also
- 18:18Speaker 1: been pretty impressive just being able to watch what Painter's
- 18:20Speaker 1: been able to do it perue in terms of retaining
- 18:22Speaker 1: players and also developing within the system.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he's another guy that's like, he's got
- 18:27Speaker 2: a belief system, and he's going to recruit to the
- 18:29Speaker 2: belief system and he's gonna not a waiver from it.
- 18:34Speaker 2: He's done transfers strategically. I mean several of his team
- 18:37Speaker 2: usually has one or two guys out of the portal
- 18:40Speaker 2: who fill a specific need. You're right, He's gotten a
- 18:42Speaker 2: lot of guys to buy in on the development plan
- 18:46Speaker 2: and this year is the first variation from that. With Heidi,
- 18:49Speaker 2: he looked like he was I mean, he played quite
- 18:52Speaker 2: a bit in the NCAA tournament and I would think
- 18:55Speaker 2: he would have a pretty big role next year. But
- 18:56Speaker 2: I guess he didn't want to be the.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Third, fourth best player, fifth bath player.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Or he wasn't getting enough nil. Uh he went to Texas, right,
- 19:04Speaker 2: so he's probably getting il and Colvid. I'm sure thought
- 19:09Speaker 2: I don't want to be a backup another year to
- 19:10Speaker 2: Braden Smith and Fletcher Lawyer. Uh So he decided he's
- 19:14Speaker 2: going to go to Wake Forest and Steve Forbes is
- 19:17Speaker 2: you know he had Hunter Sallas the last couple of years.
- 19:20Speaker 2: He had that kid from Oklahoma one year before that
- 19:23Speaker 2: who really did well there. So he's big on portal
- 19:26Speaker 2: guards and handing them the ball, let him do their thing.
- 19:30Speaker 2: But Painter, again, that's he's got his niche and that's
- 19:33Speaker 2: what he stays too. But I don't think everybody can do.
- 19:36Speaker 1: That in terms of going back to Houston and Florida.
- 19:40Speaker 1: When you looked at the guys that they got, was
- 19:42Speaker 1: there any because it's It's easy to sit here and say, well,
- 19:46Speaker 1: they did a great job of getting under the radar
- 19:48Speaker 1: guys and develop developing them. Was there any theme amongst
- 19:51Speaker 1: the players that they got in terms of what they
- 19:54Speaker 1: looked for, how they how they put that together, just
- 19:57Speaker 1: kind of when you watch them play, because it's one
- 19:59Speaker 1: thing to just collect talent and then think it's all
- 20:02Speaker 1: going to fit together. But I think the piece that
- 20:04Speaker 1: a lot of coaches probably miss is figuring out in
- 20:09Speaker 1: such a short period of time how all the pieces
- 20:12Speaker 1: are going to fit together. And I think that's where
- 20:13Speaker 1: you have to give Golden and Samson a ton of
- 20:16Speaker 1: credit because they obviously got talented players maybe that were
- 20:20Speaker 1: a little bit under the radar, but they also figured
- 20:23Speaker 1: out a way that they're all going to fit together,
- 20:24Speaker 1: and that's that's I think maybe the toughest thing to do.
- 20:29Speaker 2: For Houston. I think it's physical strength. I mean, he
- 20:32Speaker 2: looks he wants guys who are older, mature, and they
- 20:36Speaker 2: have strong bodies and are willing to really commit to
- 20:40Speaker 2: playing defense. I think he filled a need as a
- 20:43Speaker 2: shooter when he got Crier away from Baylor. He became
- 20:47Speaker 2: more of his offensive guy. But the rest of them
- 20:49Speaker 2: are more defensive oriented players for Florida. I think Todd
- 20:54Speaker 2: Golden likes lengths. I mean, he had four big men
- 20:57Speaker 2: that he played and rotated, and they were all pretty long,
- 21:00Speaker 2: and they were all very athletic. They weren't weren't the
- 21:03Speaker 2: Umar Ballo, Race Thompson kind of kind of big man.
- 21:07Speaker 2: They were guys who could really run the court. A
- 21:09Speaker 2: couple of them kind of reminded me of Cody Zeller
- 21:11Speaker 2: the way they ran the care when Zeller was at
- 21:14Speaker 2: Indiana and beat the defense down court, and the first
- 21:17Speaker 2: option on the offense was to get the ball down
- 21:20Speaker 2: to the big man for a dunk. So I think
- 21:22Speaker 2: that that was that's there, that's their point, that's what
- 21:26Speaker 2: they're looking for. So everybody has their own thing, but
- 21:30Speaker 2: it's not two bigs in the middle of the lane
- 21:34Speaker 2: trying to post up and back their man down and score.
- 21:38Speaker 1: In terms of Indiana, obviously they've had a couple of
- 21:42Speaker 1: transfer portal pickups so far. I think there's some dis
- 21:46Speaker 1: judging from the messages I get on the inside the
- 21:50Speaker 1: hall community, the messages on social media, Facebook comments, et cetera, emails,
- 21:56Speaker 1: I think there's some people who are a little bit
- 21:58Speaker 1: impatient right now, just in terms of how things are developing.
- 22:01Speaker 1: What have you thought just so far of how the
- 22:06Speaker 1: rosters developed so far? Getting Reed Bailey, obviously Devreze's son,
- 22:10Speaker 1: Tucker's coming along Connor and right Trent Sisley and then
- 22:14Speaker 1: potentially Luke Goodie. That's what maybe five players so far
- 22:19Speaker 1: potentially that could be maybe the core of the team.
- 22:23Speaker 1: What just early impressions on how they've worked the portal
- 22:28Speaker 1: in how I guess the speed of how things are developing.
- 22:33Speaker 1: I mean, I looked at some data last year. A
- 22:35Speaker 1: lot of the guys that committed Indiana wasn't until later
- 22:37Speaker 1: in April and early May. I think people were maybe
- 22:41Speaker 1: panicking a little bit too soon. There's there's still a
- 22:43Speaker 1: lot of time here.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think it takes time. I think
- 22:47Speaker 2: the thing I'd say is some of the guys that
- 22:48Speaker 2: you're trying to get have other options, and so they
- 22:52Speaker 2: want to probably look around a little bit and not
- 22:54Speaker 2: just commit to the first place that offers someone. I
- 22:57Speaker 2: think we're seeing some of that playouts. You're going to
- 22:58Speaker 2: have to win some recruiting. Bass are gonna have to
- 23:00Speaker 2: have some plan b's and some planned c's. You know,
- 23:05Speaker 2: I think they're probably doing a lot of work that
- 23:07Speaker 2: we don't know about. I don't think there's been a
- 23:09Speaker 2: lot of immediate leaks in terms of who they're after,
- 23:11Speaker 2: and that's as immediate person. I guess. I don't like that.
- 23:15Speaker 2: I'm sure fans don't like that, but as a coaching staff,
- 23:18Speaker 2: it's to their credit because I don't. I think you
- 23:20Speaker 2: try and keep it as secretive as you can who
- 23:22Speaker 2: you're trying to get, because if you're after him, then
- 23:24Speaker 2: other people are going to say, Hey, Illinois after that guy,
- 23:27Speaker 2: why aren't we after him? Or you know, Kentucky's after
- 23:29Speaker 2: that guy, can we get him. The one thing that's
- 23:33Speaker 2: kind of surprised me is that usually I canna say usually,
- 23:38Speaker 2: but often when coaches change jobs, they bring one or
- 23:42Speaker 2: two players from their previous program with them, And to
- 23:45Speaker 2: my knowledge, no West Virginia guys have Davreez his son,
- 23:50Speaker 2: his son. But no, that's a you know, that's an
- 23:53Speaker 2: easy recruitment. But none of the other guys, none of
- 23:56Speaker 2: the none of the younger players, none of the commit
- 24:00Speaker 2: it's the height. They had three high school commits. None
- 24:02Speaker 2: of them are also coming. That's that seems a little interesting.
- 24:06Speaker 1: To me, just from the standpoint of.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Interesting from well, I guess I always compared to what
- 24:16Speaker 2: I'm most familiar with. And when uh Kelsey came to Louisville,
- 24:20Speaker 2: he brought Rain Smith and James Scott, two of his starters,
- 24:23Speaker 2: and another guy who red shirted. UH Pope brought Jackson
- 24:29Speaker 2: Robinson from b YU and who was one of his recruits.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I mean, I think you see that fairly off. I mean,
- 24:37Speaker 2: hasn't one or two of the Maryland guys followed Kevin
- 24:40Speaker 2: Willard to Villanova?
- 24:41Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah. The one thing I would say is a
- 24:45Speaker 1: couple of the players that obviously played a ton last year.
- 24:49Speaker 1: I think we're heavily tied to Chester Frasier, who obviously
- 24:53Speaker 1: wasn't going to come to Indiana because of his ties
- 24:55Speaker 1: to Illinois. And the high school recruits I think to
- 24:59Speaker 1: the same, you know, based on what I can see,
- 25:03Speaker 1: maybe had some ties to assistant coach that didn't come.
- 25:06Speaker 1: So we'll see what happens. I don't think any to
- 25:09Speaker 1: my knowledge is none of those three I've committed elsewhere,
- 25:12Speaker 1: So we'll see. I think sometimes with the high school
- 25:15Speaker 1: kids it may take a little bit longer to develop.
- 25:17Speaker 2: I'm not sure.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I'm not saying that any of them are going to
- 25:19Speaker 1: come to any and I agree with you. It's been
- 25:21Speaker 1: a little interesting. They also didn't have the deepest or
- 25:23Speaker 1: most talented team last year. It was Virginia. I mean,
- 25:25Speaker 1: I think they did a little bit more with lest
- 25:27Speaker 1: I know, they had one guy that was a freshman
- 25:29Speaker 1: last year that I think transferred down to a lower
- 25:32Speaker 1: major school that they maybe took late. So you know,
- 25:36Speaker 1: I don't have I don't have as much of a problem.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I don't have any problem with it, as long as
- 25:41Speaker 1: you know they're able to fill the roster out and
- 25:43Speaker 1: they're able to get guys that fit. I mean, I
- 25:45Speaker 1: don't think you just bring somewhere along just because they're
- 25:47Speaker 1: with you at the previous stop. But clearly they got
- 25:51Speaker 1: the best player available that was still had eligibility from
- 25:53Speaker 1: West Virginia bringing in Tucker Devrees. Last thing I wanted
- 25:59Speaker 1: to ask you about, just in general with college basketball,
- 26:05Speaker 1: do you think the portal overall has been good for
- 26:08Speaker 1: the sport or do you think it's been a negative.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Kind of a loaded question, but we'll leave on that.
- 26:13Speaker 2: I mean, I think overall it's been good. I don't
- 26:17Speaker 2: like it, but I'll admit it's because of my age,
- 26:20Speaker 2: and I came up in an era when it wasn't
- 26:23Speaker 2: like that, and I liked it. And I hear from
- 26:27Speaker 2: more fans who are of my age of one of
- 26:30Speaker 2: the things they enjoyed about college basketball was watching a
- 26:33Speaker 2: player come in playing as a freshman, getting a little
- 26:36Speaker 2: bit better, and then playing as a sophomore and getting
- 26:39Speaker 2: even better, and then playing as a junior and being
- 26:41Speaker 2: really good. And now it's like they you don't see
- 26:46Speaker 2: that very much anymore, and every year is a different
- 26:50Speaker 2: roster and it's a different face. And you know, in
- 26:54Speaker 2: the previous eras guys would play at a school for
- 26:57Speaker 2: three or four years and be associated with the pro
- 27:00Speaker 2: and then maybe come back and be around the program
- 27:03Speaker 2: or be a part of the program or whatever. And
- 27:07Speaker 2: now it's like they're there for seven months and they're
- 27:09Speaker 2: gone on to the next one. There's so many guys
- 27:11Speaker 2: that are playing at four schools. And I know that,
- 27:16Speaker 2: I know the arguments, and I don't disagree with them
- 27:18Speaker 2: about coaches can change jobs and regular college students can
- 27:22Speaker 2: change jobs, and they deserve to get paid because all
- 27:25Speaker 2: the money that's in there. But having lived through the
- 27:29Speaker 2: previous I mean I'm old enough to remember when Kreem
- 27:32Speaker 2: Abdul jabbaris Luel Sender couldn't play as a freshman at
- 27:34Speaker 2: UCLA and his life turned out okay, same for Bill Walton.
- 27:39Speaker 2: You know, it just seems it's so frenetic now that
- 27:45Speaker 2: it's really harder to follow the game. You try, and
- 27:49Speaker 2: I laugh, like people post those stories the day after
- 27:52Speaker 2: the National Championship game of a really early top twenty
- 27:56Speaker 2: five for next year. I mean, you don't even know
- 27:58Speaker 2: twenty percent of the players who are going to be
- 28:00Speaker 2: on the team. I mean, how can you possibly project
- 28:02Speaker 2: who's going to be good and who's not going to
- 28:04Speaker 2: be good. It's foolish. Where in the old days, I mean,
- 28:06Speaker 2: I can remember in twenty twelve, when I was at
- 28:09Speaker 2: the Final four that somebody told me that USA Today
- 28:12Speaker 2: was going to have the story the next day that
- 28:13Speaker 2: IU was going to be preseason number one for twenty thirteen.
- 28:17Speaker 2: And that makes sense because Zella and Olodipot and Hall's
- 28:20Speaker 2: and Watford and all those guys are going to be back.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Now doesn't make any sense. So I'm not the guy
- 28:26Speaker 2: says the rules shouldn't have changed. This is wrong. I
- 28:30Speaker 2: get it. It's the way it is, I accept it,
- 28:32Speaker 2: but I do have a longing for the way that
- 28:34Speaker 2: it used to be because it just was more I
- 28:38Speaker 2: don't know, it just seemed like you could follow, you know.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I'm Purvis Elson was the MVP of the nineteen eighty
- 28:47Speaker 2: six Final four as a freshman. He stayed at Woiver
- 28:49Speaker 2: for four years, and as a media person, you've covered
- 28:53Speaker 2: him and you got to know him at IU. You know,
- 28:55Speaker 2: Quinn Buckner was the was a freshman starting point guard
- 28:59Speaker 2: on a team before in stages last year, and was
- 29:03Speaker 2: the captain of an undefeated team at Kentucky. I can
- 29:06Speaker 2: think of guys that Sambouie, that Kenny Walker, the guys
- 29:10Speaker 2: that I would get to know and you watched them
- 29:12Speaker 2: go from good to really good to great, and you
- 29:16Speaker 2: don't see that anymore now. It's so transactional. I don't know.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Yes, it's I mean, I mean even a recent example
- 29:22Speaker 1: of an Indiana player, I mean Trace Jackson Davis. Think
- 29:24Speaker 1: about we might have seen a player like we won't
- 29:27Speaker 1: We won't see another player like that, and that was
- 29:29Speaker 1: just he's just what two years out of college.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Any records that he set will never be touched, like
- 29:36Speaker 2: all the career scoring records. I mean, no one's gonna
- 29:38Speaker 2: break Cheney's record and it's not gonna happen, right, So,
- 29:42Speaker 2: just a different world. And is it better in some ways?
- 29:45Speaker 2: It's better? In some ways, I don't think it's better.
- 29:48Speaker 2: And you know, the interest in the tournament this year
- 29:52Speaker 2: from the TV ratings seemed to say that people like
- 29:54Speaker 2: the tournament still. I guess crowds will probably be up
- 30:00Speaker 2: next year at IU. They were definitely up at Louisville
- 30:02Speaker 2: this year because they were winning. Uh So winning is
- 30:06Speaker 2: what matters in the end. But I think there's you know,
- 30:11Speaker 2: there's some fans who've been around for a long time
- 30:14Speaker 2: who probably long for the days that it used to
- 30:17Speaker 2: be somebody would come to a place and stay for
- 30:19Speaker 2: four years, and that's not going to be that way
- 30:21Speaker 2: yet accept it.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you could see some more guys like
- 30:25Speaker 1: an Anthony Lele or a gal Away. I think situations
- 30:27Speaker 1: like that, homegrown players from Indiana or any you know,
- 30:31Speaker 1: for any other program.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Right, you do it, and Coffin Rens do it, but
- 30:35Speaker 2: they're the exception.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Right No, And I mean, and those are the guys
- 30:38Speaker 1: that are going to be appreciated long term, right, in
- 30:41Speaker 1: those programs because they're going to be remembered for they
- 30:44Speaker 1: were in this era of player movement and they stayed
- 30:46Speaker 1: and they won. And you know, that's another key I
- 30:50Speaker 1: think to all of this is if you win enough,
- 30:53Speaker 1: you have a chance probably to keep guys right for
- 30:55Speaker 1: if they're not an NBA player, you have a chance
- 30:57Speaker 1: to keep guys for the long term if you're not winning,
- 30:59Speaker 1: and then you're gonna see movement and the other thing
- 31:03Speaker 1: I think just for general interest in the sport, I
- 31:06Speaker 1: think it's you know, with the NBA in July right
- 31:11Speaker 1: when when free agency starts, I mean it's it's the
- 31:14Speaker 1: lead on everything. It's the big story NFL free agency.
- 31:18Speaker 1: I think it has given a bit of a boost
- 31:21Speaker 1: to the to the year round coverage of college basketball
- 31:25Speaker 1: that the portal. Right now, if there's a big portal commit,
- 31:29Speaker 1: it's gonna be one of the top headlines in ESPA
- 31:31Speaker 1: dot com. That that wasn't gonna you know, in the past,
- 31:35Speaker 1: if a guy had to transfer and sit out and
- 31:37Speaker 1: we weren't going to see him play for a couple
- 31:39Speaker 1: of years at a new place, that it wasn't a
- 31:41Speaker 1: big deal. So I think from that standpoint, it's kind
- 31:43Speaker 1: of helped. I just agree with you from the chaos perspective.
- 31:48Speaker 1: I hope that at some point they're able to arrive
- 31:51Speaker 1: in a system where there's a little bit more stability
- 31:55Speaker 1: and in terms of player movement, I don't have problem
- 31:57Speaker 1: with guys transferring. Maybe it can be a one time
- 32:00Speaker 1: transfer with no with no exceptions. But with this idea,
- 32:04Speaker 1: I mean, isn't Trey White that started at USC. Isn't
- 32:06Speaker 1: he going to be at his fourth school in four years?
- 32:09Speaker 1: And I think these there's been one coaching change in
- 32:11Speaker 1: that so it's not like it's been coaching. He started
- 32:14Speaker 1: at USC, went to Louisville, Illinois, and ol Kansas.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Right, He's not the only one. There's plenty of this guy.
- 32:22Speaker 2: That was the point guarded. He was at Arizona, then
- 32:27Speaker 2: he went to West Virginia and Kentucky. Nwas going to Cincinnati.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Kerr Crisa, Yeah, Yeah, he's another four school guy. So
- 32:34Speaker 2: there's there's gonna be a bunch of them. It's gonna
- 32:36Speaker 2: it's gonna happen. You know, it's going to continue to happen.
- 32:40Speaker 2: And people talk about I mean, coaches don't jump four
- 32:43Speaker 2: top three, you know, No, they jumped once. They might
- 32:47Speaker 2: jump twice, but once more likely Underwood did jump.
- 32:50Speaker 1: But Buzz Williams every six years.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Right Underwood did it. I mean he went from Steven F.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Austin or whatever to Illinois. I me to Oklahoma State
- 32:59Speaker 2: to Illinois. But they don't jump every year. So but
- 33:04Speaker 2: it's not good. It's not gonna change. I mean, players
- 33:07Speaker 2: are going to be able to do that. The NCAA
- 33:09Speaker 2: is going to be afraid to try to enforce any
- 33:11Speaker 2: rules because they know they'll get sued if they try
- 33:13Speaker 2: and stop them.
- 33:15Speaker 1: I mean, I think the only thing they could do
- 33:16Speaker 1: is maybe introduce IF they, if they, if they IF
- 33:20Speaker 1: contracts come into the sport, you know, signing players to
- 33:24Speaker 1: multi year deals. I think that's the only way you
- 33:27Speaker 1: stop it. I mean, you say you sign a freshman,
- 33:30Speaker 1: say this is an IL deal for our revenue shared
- 33:33Speaker 1: deal for two years. You have to commit to the
- 33:35Speaker 1: two years or the three years, and then it would
- 33:37Speaker 1: be up to the players to decide if they want
- 33:39Speaker 1: to sign it. Right, you get the stability, But then
- 33:41Speaker 1: do you want to bet on yourself and say after
- 33:43Speaker 1: one year, I'm I'm going to be able to maybe
- 33:46Speaker 1: go get somewhere else or do you want to take
- 33:47Speaker 1: the guarantee of the of the deal of what I
- 33:50Speaker 1: can get up front. So I think that'll be the
- 33:52Speaker 1: next frontier and all of this, but it's an ever
- 33:54Speaker 1: changing landscape. I really enjoyed your column at WDRB. I
- 33:57Speaker 1: thought it was really well done, and I know a
- 34:00Speaker 1: lot of au fans read it and gave it, you know,
- 34:03Speaker 1: a lot of thought because of last season and what
- 34:05Speaker 1: happened with the portal, and I think people are excited
- 34:08Speaker 1: about a little bit maybe more analytic driven, more savvy
- 34:12Speaker 1: approach to the portal this season. Might not see Indiana
- 34:15Speaker 1: ranked at the same level in terms of the portal rankings,
- 34:18Speaker 1: but who knows a team.
- 34:20Speaker 2: That's better, That's what That's what was missing at Indiana.
- 34:24Speaker 2: These guys were highly Vallo and Rice and Carlisle were
- 34:27Speaker 2: highly ranked in the portal, but there wasn't any forethought
- 34:31Speaker 2: into a how are they going to fit together? How
- 34:33Speaker 2: are they going to play together, and how are they
- 34:35Speaker 2: going to be developed. I mean, Ballow, like I said,
- 34:38Speaker 2: I think, played about how you thought he would be good.
- 34:41Speaker 2: He played the way about how I thought he would
- 34:42Speaker 2: be But Miles Rice probably thought this isn't how I
- 34:46Speaker 2: was used to playing at Washington State. I was he's
- 34:49Speaker 2: a better player than he played for IU last year.
- 34:52Speaker 2: For sure in Carlisle, he was vastly overrated and maybe
- 34:58Speaker 2: maybe he just had an off year. But I didn't
- 35:00Speaker 2: really see he wasn't a very good shooter, who wasn't
- 35:04Speaker 2: a great ball handler. He's a decent defender. But if
- 35:09Speaker 2: he was ranked in the top was he the top
- 35:11Speaker 2: twenty of the portal guy?
- 35:12Speaker 1: He was pretty high. The other thing that really I
- 35:15Speaker 1: don't see it. Another thing that really torpedo the season
- 35:18Speaker 1: was that it took forever for Woodson to figure out that,
- 35:23Speaker 1: you know, he had a guy on the bench, and
- 35:25Speaker 1: Anthony leal that if you would have just played him
- 35:27Speaker 1: more from the start, I think the record would have
- 35:29Speaker 1: been a lot different in the end. But he was
- 35:32Speaker 1: too married to this idea of playing the two big
- 35:35Speaker 1: lineup and playing.
- 35:36Speaker 2: The guy the most money. Too. I mean there's some
- 35:41Speaker 2: of that implicit in this. If you go in the
- 35:43Speaker 2: portal and get some of the top players, you're paying
- 35:45Speaker 2: them a decent amount of money, and A you're probably
- 35:48Speaker 2: thinking that I'm paying them, I need to play him
- 35:49Speaker 2: and be the agency are probably saying, hey, wait, a minute.
- 35:51Speaker 2: I come, my guy as playing more, right, if you
- 35:54Speaker 2: send more players to you in the future, you tell
- 35:57Speaker 2: me he's gonna play, And now he's sitting in the bench.
- 35:58Speaker 2: I'm not sure I'm gonna send more guys your way.
- 36:00Speaker 1: We don't mean it was no coincidence that he played
- 36:03Speaker 1: Bryce and Tucker all the way up to the UCLA
- 36:06Speaker 1: game and then didn't play him at all after that,
- 36:10Speaker 1: and then that's when they obviously, you know, started winning
- 36:13Speaker 1: some more games. But at that point he was desperate
- 36:16Speaker 1: to try to make the tournament, so he and he
- 36:20Speaker 1: knew he was gone. So he basically said, I'm just
- 36:24Speaker 1: just gonna play the guys that give me the best
- 36:27Speaker 1: chance to win, which I think that's how you have
- 36:29Speaker 1: to coach from the start of the season. And now
- 36:32Speaker 1: I want to make this about Woodson, but I'm just saying,
- 36:34Speaker 1: in this whole new era of portal acquisitions, that needs
- 36:38Speaker 1: to be a conversation that happens on the front end
- 36:40Speaker 1: with the player and say we're gonna pay you this
- 36:43Speaker 1: amount of money. We're happy to do that. We want
- 36:46Speaker 1: you to be a part of our program, but we're
- 36:48Speaker 1: not promising you that you're going to play thirty five
- 36:50Speaker 1: minutes a game. You're gonna have to earn your minutes,
- 36:53Speaker 1: and that that's how it has to be. Because I
- 36:55Speaker 1: think that's, you know, among the many things or managed
- 37:00Speaker 1: last season, I think that was even the Louke Goodie thing.
- 37:03Speaker 1: I mean, there was times where he was playing Imbacco
- 37:05Speaker 1: more more than and then Goody, and it was clear
- 37:08Speaker 1: certain situations that that shouldn't have been the case. And
- 37:10Speaker 1: the two bits, you know, all those guys it was
- 37:12Speaker 1: it was basically playing the highest value that all guys
- 37:16Speaker 1: as much earlier in the season, and then once they
- 37:17Speaker 1: figured out later on in the season that uh, he
- 37:21Speaker 1: was going to be gone, he just played the guys
- 37:23Speaker 1: that helped him win the most. I think that's how
- 37:24Speaker 1: you have to do it from the get go. Whether
- 37:26Speaker 1: it's the guy that's getting one point five million or
- 37:29Speaker 1: a guy that's getting three hundred thousand, play the guy out,
- 37:31Speaker 1: play the guy that's going to help you win the game.
- 37:34Speaker 2: My hope is that one day some bright young student
- 37:37Speaker 2: at the i U. Kelly School will do ah his
- 37:41Speaker 2: thesis on how Mike Woodson mismanaged the Indiana basketball program.
- 37:46Speaker 2: It would be a best seller.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Yeah, we could probably do a five hour podcast and
- 37:54Speaker 1: still have plenty of things to talk about, but we
- 37:57Speaker 1: will leave it at that. We were hopeful for better
- 38:00Speaker 1: days ahead for Indiana basketball. Is Darren Devrees and the
- 38:06Speaker 1: coaching staff kind of work the portal in a stealth
- 38:10Speaker 1: like manner, which not a lot of leaks I think
- 38:13Speaker 1: is a good thing. Like like you said, could maybe
- 38:16Speaker 1: drive up the pot price for certain guys if all
- 38:18Speaker 1: of a sudden word gets out that you're working on
- 38:20Speaker 1: a certain guy. So hopefully things continue to operate in
- 38:24Speaker 1: this way and we'll see some moving here in the
- 38:28Speaker 1: next couple weeks with the roster. Thank you again for
- 38:30Speaker 1: coming on this episode of Podcasts on Brink. If if
- 38:34Speaker 1: you haven't read the column again, I'm gonna put it
- 38:36Speaker 1: down the show notes. It's at WDRB dot com. Just
- 38:38Speaker 1: click on sports I think bozicch and Crawford and scroll
- 38:41Speaker 1: down a little bit and it should be down there.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Pretty good analysis there of what happened with Gonzaga and Florida.
