- 0:48Speaker 3: Wednesday morning, whatever morning it is, I thought maybe I
- 0:51Speaker 3: could get to the right microphone there for just a moment.
- 0:53Speaker 3: It is Wednesday morning, and I was one vacation last week, Larry,
- 0:56Speaker 3: and so I'm a little bit I'm a little bit
- 0:57Speaker 3: off on things. Yeah, I get a pass on that
- 1:00Speaker 3: when larr Dawson is in studio with me this morning,
- 1:02Speaker 3: as I re equaate myself with the studio over here
- 1:05Speaker 3: and get us ready to go, I'm Dell Coprier listening
- 1:07Speaker 3: to ask the ex where Larry Dawson is here this
- 1:09Speaker 3: morning taking your phone calls. I have a lot of
- 1:11Speaker 3: stuff to talk about with Larry. But Larry Dawson buys cars.
- 1:14Speaker 4: We buy cars, and we buy cars every.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Day, that's right, still does it after all these years.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Yes, I was Tellingdal when I walked in that I'm
- 1:22Speaker 4: actually having the time of my life because I'm not
- 1:25Speaker 4: chasing the dollar. I'm having something to do. I'm happy.
- 1:31Speaker 4: I'm allowing myself to work with the freedom of my choice,
- 1:35Speaker 4: not under the gun of a lot of overhead. But
- 1:39Speaker 4: I'm still pretty much doing what I did before. I'm
- 1:43Speaker 4: just not in that retail game. But since you and
- 1:46Speaker 4: I had our last show, I was telling Dale that
- 1:50Speaker 4: as of this well, as you said Monday, right, the
- 1:55Speaker 4: friend of mine bought a vehicle. I helped put the
- 1:58Speaker 4: deal together. I took the trade he bought a new car.
- 2:01Speaker 4: New car dealers real happy they didn't have to deal
- 2:05Speaker 4: with the trade in, you know, invest their money in it.
- 2:08Speaker 4: And it just worked out really, really good. And there's
- 2:12Speaker 4: been three of them that I know of since last month,
- 2:16Speaker 4: and just people called me and said, hey, can you
- 2:18Speaker 4: help me? I said, what do you want to do?
- 2:20Speaker 4: And two of them involved trade in. So I was
- 2:23Speaker 4: able to put the deal together and allow the dealer
- 2:26Speaker 4: to sell the car, and the other one was at
- 2:28Speaker 4: a conflict with hours. I mean, I'm sitting on the
- 2:32Speaker 4: front porch in Hurricane. I get a text from a
- 2:35Speaker 4: friend that their friend wants to buy this certain Bronco sport.
- 2:39Speaker 4: They knew exactly what they wanted to do, but they
- 2:42Speaker 4: work really long hours and was not able to communicate,
- 2:47Speaker 4: was not able to call during their operating hours to
- 2:52Speaker 4: make arrangements to buy this vehicle. And I said, yeah,
- 2:55Speaker 4: give me a second. So I text my friend runs
- 2:58Speaker 4: the store, told him what was going on, gave him
- 3:01Speaker 4: the contact name a number. Ten minutes later he called
- 3:04Speaker 4: me back and he says, I've just talked to her.
- 3:06Speaker 4: We're going to do the deal Thursday.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Nice.
- 3:08Speaker 4: I'm at snowshoe Thursday. He called once again to thank me. Now,
- 3:12Speaker 4: I don't know if that deal would have taken place,
- 3:14Speaker 4: but took place with these and the thing about it
- 3:17Speaker 4: was someone was able to answer the question and answer
- 3:21Speaker 4: the phone. It went through me, and that's okay. I mean,
- 3:25Speaker 4: there was nothing for me to gain out there other
- 3:27Speaker 4: than an Ada boy, but that's what I do, and
- 3:31Speaker 4: I enjoy doing that as a satisfaction to me. I'm
- 3:34Speaker 4: looking right now. One of my high school classmates sold
- 3:37Speaker 4: a hunt a CRV two. I didn't realize it's been
- 3:40Speaker 4: twelve years ago. She once another one. She came to
- 3:44Speaker 4: me and text me. She said, I know you retire,
- 3:46Speaker 4: but can you help And I said, yeah, I can.
- 3:49Speaker 4: I can do what to see what I can do. Well,
- 3:51Speaker 4: as we furthered this conversation yesterday, I just asked her.
- 3:55Speaker 4: I said, well, what's going on? And you know, I
- 3:58Speaker 4: put feelers out for what you want. And she told
- 4:02Speaker 4: me about mechanical issues she was having with her car.
- 4:07Speaker 4: And I said, well, Chris, once you try this first,
- 4:11Speaker 4: it might be cheaper than trading. And she did not.
- 4:14Speaker 4: She's a single mother. You know, she is not married.
- 4:18Speaker 4: I've known her father or mother and both her brothers,
- 4:20Speaker 4: and I said, once you try this, and I think
- 4:23Speaker 4: she's going to and probably is going to fix her problem. Now,
- 4:26Speaker 4: whether she likes to trade after that or not, I'm
- 4:28Speaker 4: still going to help her. But she shared with me
- 4:31Speaker 4: what was going on. She was, let's just say naive
- 4:35Speaker 4: in that area. And I have I have done this before.
- 4:40Speaker 4: I kind of know the symptoms and the corrections, and
- 4:44Speaker 4: I suggested and I'm sure she's going to do it
- 4:47Speaker 4: and will help her both ways. First of all, maybe
- 4:51Speaker 4: she might decide not to trade because she really likes
- 4:53Speaker 4: this particular brand car, and if it fixes it, it
- 4:57Speaker 4: won't give her more longevity and patience to trade. You know,
- 5:00Speaker 4: take your time in yeah, instead of getting that desperation mode,
- 5:04Speaker 4: because there's when you don't want to trade. You want
- 5:07Speaker 4: to take your time. I mean, a wounded bird, a
- 5:10Speaker 4: cat's going to get Yeah, you know it's on the ground.
- 5:13Speaker 4: But not always is that symptom that bad. Sometimes it is.
- 5:18Speaker 4: It might be an indication of something worse to come.
- 5:21Speaker 4: But just spending a little bit of time and a
- 5:24Speaker 4: little bit of money, and especially if you can get
- 5:26Speaker 4: it in front of a person that is familiar with
- 5:29Speaker 4: that problem or problematic in that particular you know, make model,
- 5:36Speaker 4: you know, not always. Ford had a really they have
- 5:41Speaker 4: this motor called a three point five Eco boost, and
- 5:45Speaker 4: the campfhasers start to rattles. A cold start rattle only
- 5:49Speaker 4: last like five seconds three seconds when you first start
- 5:52Speaker 4: cold start, until it pumps up the oil pressure and
- 5:56Speaker 4: it expands these cogs and expands the chain or rattle.
- 6:00Speaker 4: I mean, it doesn't sound good, but I mean it's
- 6:02Speaker 4: very very quick in solvingself. And the only way to
- 6:07Speaker 4: correct it is putting new camp phasers in it. And
- 6:11Speaker 4: most Ford garages. Is it's going to be about two
- 6:13Speaker 4: thousand dollars. It might be a little bit more, a
- 6:15Speaker 4: little bit less, but you might as well figure it's
- 6:18Speaker 4: a two thousand dollars fix. But once you fix it, it's
- 6:22Speaker 4: done by farm truck that I drive one hundred and
- 6:24Speaker 4: eighty thousand miles. I fixed it forty thousand miles ago
- 6:27Speaker 4: because I was familiar with it. Now the person that
- 6:31Speaker 4: is not familiar with it and they hear it start up,
- 6:33Speaker 4: they think the engine's coming apart, right, I mean, it's
- 6:36Speaker 4: a death rattle. It's a term we used in the
- 6:38Speaker 4: automobile business. But it's a correctable death rattle. And yes
- 6:43Speaker 4: it comes with a little bit of cost of money,
- 6:45Speaker 4: but it's a whole lot cheaper than trading, much cheaper.
- 6:49Speaker 4: So you see things in the business that I saw
- 6:51Speaker 4: in you experience. I was talking to Donnie dun For
- 6:54Speaker 4: yesterday and we were talking about he said, you know,
- 6:57Speaker 4: he said that Larry's been around this long enough. I'm
- 6:59Speaker 4: not sure he can fix it with his hands, and
- 7:01Speaker 4: he can fix it with his mind, right, And that's
- 7:03Speaker 4: sort of me. You don't want to hand me a wrench,
- 7:06Speaker 4: but you might ask me what I think and which
- 7:09Speaker 4: way to go with it. And most of the time
- 7:11Speaker 4: in my Rollodex or my contacts, I've got that person
- 7:16Speaker 4: this familiar with that problem, that has fixed it before,
- 7:19Speaker 4: is very familiar with fixing it.
- 7:21Speaker 3: I feel a little bit a kindred to you on
- 7:23Speaker 3: this Where I rolled the whips for so long doing
- 7:26Speaker 3: rental cars. I'm not a mechanic, but man, I saw
- 7:28Speaker 3: every brand there was, by the hundreds over the course
- 7:31Speaker 3: of years, and so I have a decent My knowledge
- 7:34Speaker 3: is a little outdated now because that was years ago,
- 7:36Speaker 3: but I had a pretty decent baseline of reliability of vehicles,
- 7:39Speaker 3: what cars had, like little little issues that you knew
- 7:42Speaker 3: how to get by. You know, just disconnect the battery
- 7:44Speaker 3: cable for twenty minutes on this one and I'll reset
- 7:46Speaker 3: that light that goes off every five minutes for no reason,
- 7:48Speaker 3: or you know, whatever it is. You get kind of
- 7:50Speaker 3: a guide on how those things work. And I have
- 7:55Speaker 3: to say, Dave Weekly and I had a little discussion
- 7:57Speaker 3: about before I went on vacation a couple of weeks ago,
- 7:59Speaker 3: about some of the consumer reports vehicles and things like
- 8:01Speaker 3: that and what people were saying about those. And it
- 8:05Speaker 3: doesn't surprise me when even today, when I see the
- 8:09Speaker 3: makers and the ones that have the really good ratings
- 8:10Speaker 3: and the ones that have the cars with issues with
- 8:13Speaker 3: service lights and different thing along those lines, it's the
- 8:15Speaker 3: same thing. Yes, man, these companies haven't changed. I've been
- 8:17Speaker 3: out of that business for ten oh my god, for
- 8:19Speaker 3: about twenty years now, and man, it hasn't changed. The
- 8:23Speaker 3: same people that have the unexplainable dashlights that come on
- 8:27Speaker 3: for no reason at all. It's the same company that
- 8:28Speaker 3: it happened to twenty years ago. It's like, how can
- 8:30Speaker 3: you not fix these problems by now?
- 8:32Speaker 4: You're right, there's a lot of censor At least with me.
- 8:36Speaker 4: I will answer the phone, I'll answer your text, and
- 8:39Speaker 4: I'll guide you in the right direction. My service is free.
- 8:43Speaker 4: You've heard of Exfinity and Comcasts. Of course it's a
- 8:46Speaker 4: large company. Well, I've had Comcast Internet for ten years
- 8:53Speaker 4: plus at Winfield. About two months ago, Frontier punched the
- 9:00Speaker 4: fiber optic underground and so now we have two choices. Well,
- 9:05Speaker 4: when there was only one choice, that bill was rather high.
- 9:09Speaker 4: You know, most people set around on talk and one
- 9:12Speaker 4: of the things come up, well you pay for internet.
- 9:13Speaker 4: That's a pretty common question, and not an offensive question.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Everybody shares and Exfinity was rather high, but they we
- 9:24Speaker 4: had no choice. So yesterday, after I got the frontier
- 9:29Speaker 4: sales pitch that was significantly less, I thought, well, I'm
- 9:33Speaker 4: gonna call Comcasts and seeea see if they're negotiable. Well,
- 9:38Speaker 4: after my third time trying to call and talk to
- 9:41Speaker 4: AI and pushed a bunch of buttons and I could
- 9:44Speaker 4: not get through. Now get this, I called. One of
- 9:47Speaker 4: the prompts is billing, So I thought, well, I'll talk
- 9:50Speaker 4: to somebody about billing. When I finally got to it
- 9:55Speaker 4: was not a person you could tell was AI or
- 9:58Speaker 4: a robotic person or whatever you want to call it.
- 10:01Speaker 4: A computer I was talking to. When I got to billing,
- 10:05Speaker 4: they said be due to the privacy, they could not
- 10:10Speaker 4: speak to me about billing, and said goodbye and hung up.
- 10:15Speaker 4: So I called back. I thought, well, I'm gonna use
- 10:17Speaker 4: this word disconnect. They got everybody's attention. Well, when I
- 10:21Speaker 4: finally got someone on the line that was probably in
- 10:24Speaker 4: Bangladesh by this, I'm guessing were any somewhere. I told
- 10:31Speaker 4: them that Comcast you know i'd had him. I said,
- 10:35Speaker 4: we see, you've you've been a good customer. And I said,
- 10:38Speaker 4: Frontier is now in the availability is at my front door.
- 10:42Speaker 4: And I told them the price I'm paying one oh
- 10:45Speaker 4: five a month Frontier sixty. They put me on hold
- 10:49Speaker 4: and come back, and they said, since you've been such
- 10:52Speaker 4: a good customer, we're going to match that price. That's
- 10:58Speaker 4: forty five dollars less. Now you take that over ten years.
- 11:03Speaker 4: I'm sure without a doubt they have some type of
- 11:05Speaker 4: Google eror saying yep, Frontiers in there, and he's at
- 11:09Speaker 4: one twenty four and one twenty four has Frontier availability now.
- 11:15Speaker 4: But it took me three calls in probably fifteen minutes.
- 11:19Speaker 4: And I had to ask her to repeat herself a
- 11:22Speaker 4: time or three because the language that I speak that
- 11:26Speaker 4: I kind of know, the language she speaks that she
- 11:29Speaker 4: kind of knows, it doesn't match real well. So I
- 11:33Speaker 4: hope that it is going to go down, but they
- 11:37Speaker 4: made it very, very difficult. They did not share that
- 11:40Speaker 4: information with me that they was willing to reduce my rate.
- 11:46Speaker 4: I took it up on myself to do that. And
- 11:48Speaker 4: there's so much information out there that Dell you have
- 11:52Speaker 4: to dig, digging, dig and get so frustrated with because
- 11:56Speaker 4: you know you're not talking to a person on the
- 11:58Speaker 4: other end.
- 11:59Speaker 3: No, it's it's become absolutely insane how impossible it is
- 12:04Speaker 3: to get anyone to discuss anything with you or take responsibility.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Like nobody will take responsibility. They'll apologize for your feelings,
- 12:13Speaker 3: I'm so sorry that you feel that way, right, but
- 12:16Speaker 3: they will not take responsibility and say, oh, I'm sorry
- 12:18Speaker 3: that I don't know your groceries weren't delivered on the
- 12:21Speaker 3: time and they ended up going four hours away and
- 12:23Speaker 3: now we're gonna have to read it. I mean it's
- 12:25Speaker 3: it's first more problems, but still you don't get that
- 12:28Speaker 3: type of customer. You know before if somebody was responsible
- 12:30Speaker 3: for something, you contacted somebody for it, there would be
- 12:32Speaker 3: a process, a customer service process. You would be issued
- 12:35Speaker 3: kind of apology and then maybe some make good on
- 12:37Speaker 3: the other end of things, even if it wasn't like substantial,
- 12:40Speaker 3: it was showing you know, we're sorry. There's none of
- 12:44Speaker 3: that anymore. It's like, sorry about your loss. Would you
- 12:48Speaker 3: like to order something else?
- 12:50Speaker 4: I'm on a blog of Carbona and if you want
- 12:55Speaker 4: to read it is amazing. I don't know how they're
- 12:58Speaker 4: still in business.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Yeah, there's Reddit threats that are just incredible.
- 13:01Speaker 4: When it comes to them, they've had their license revoked
- 13:04Speaker 4: in several states, there is months and months of lag
- 13:09Speaker 4: time between the acquisition and the finality of it. It
- 13:16Speaker 4: I just I read it, and I go, how does
- 13:19Speaker 4: this company still exist? And why why does people go
- 13:22Speaker 4: to it? When you have local you don't have to
- 13:25Speaker 4: come to me. We have local dealers here that will
- 13:27Speaker 4: buy your car. I will buy your car, and it
- 13:31Speaker 4: especially if you come to me. If you call me,
- 13:33Speaker 4: I'm going to answer the phone. If not, you leave
- 13:36Speaker 4: a message, I'm gonna call you right back. And if
- 13:39Speaker 4: you can't get away, I'm gonna come to your house.
- 13:41Speaker 4: I probably go to more houses than they come to me.
- 13:44Speaker 4: And this is what I do. It's a service. It's
- 13:46Speaker 4: a free service. I mean, you're ultimately going to sell
- 13:49Speaker 4: your car, So why don't we lessen the frustration and
- 13:53Speaker 4: the chances if there is a problem that we're gonna
- 13:58Speaker 4: be able to correct it by talking, by me being there,
- 14:01Speaker 4: you being there, I mean bus getting together and solving
- 14:04Speaker 4: the problem. I had a situation a check got double deposit.
- 14:11Speaker 4: It's a long story. I won't bore you with it,
- 14:13Speaker 4: but it happened, and the dealer on the other end
- 14:16Speaker 4: that had purchased a couple of cars. Realized that. He
- 14:20Speaker 4: texted me twice. July fourth, I was side to side
- 14:23Speaker 4: riding up in the mountains. I had hardly any signal,
- 14:26Speaker 4: and I texted him and I got back and I said, wait,
- 14:28Speaker 4: what's up? And he told me, and I said, don't
- 14:30Speaker 4: worry about We're going to take care of it. We'll
- 14:33Speaker 4: talk to Monday. Well, Monday, John Wilson, president of Puttnham
- 14:37Speaker 4: County Bank, calls me. Now, how many presidents of the
- 14:39Speaker 4: bank calls you winterers?
- 14:41Speaker 3: Win?
- 14:41Speaker 4: There's an issue in the in the accounting world.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I've never got one.
- 14:46Speaker 4: You know what, You get a bill, you get kicked back,
- 14:49Speaker 4: you get charged in back and all that. And John called,
- 14:53Speaker 4: That's why I bank at putt m County Bank, because
- 14:55Speaker 4: I know the people down there. And they answered the
- 14:56Speaker 4: phone called five six, two, three, three nine one, and
- 14:59Speaker 4: they'll say putting them counting back. They won't tell you
- 15:01Speaker 4: start pushing buttons. Anyway, I said, John, I knew he
- 15:05Speaker 4: was going to call, and here's the deal. Blah blah bah.
- 15:07Speaker 4: And we talked and then we talked about other things,
- 15:09Speaker 4: and I said, I thank you. You can't buy that service.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Why emmy to me another lender or another lending institution
- 15:19Speaker 4: or financial institution could not come to me with any
- 15:22Speaker 4: offers to take me away from one that will answer
- 15:25Speaker 4: the phone. I mean, I'm just not for sale. I'm
- 15:28Speaker 4: just not going to give up the convenience and the
- 15:30Speaker 4: satisfaction that I can call resolve an issue and have
- 15:35Speaker 4: it done. And what's kind of ironic about this is
- 15:38Speaker 4: that before John, before John called me, I called Ronda
- 15:44Speaker 4: down putting them counting bank because I had my granddaughter
- 15:46Speaker 4: a debit card. I kind of teaching her bank, and
- 15:50Speaker 4: I came up with this idea, Well, now they're issuing
- 15:53Speaker 4: new tag or new cards. Excuse me that are You
- 15:58Speaker 4: don't slide them in there? You just tap up? Yeah, okay,
- 16:00Speaker 4: tapping go was called tap Well. I fall on the sword.
- 16:04Speaker 4: I had it. I thought I gave it to Ken.
- 16:06Speaker 4: Long story short, I don't know what happened to it.
- 16:09Speaker 4: I realized that neither one of us had it. So
- 16:12Speaker 4: I called Ronda down to the bank Monday, and I
- 16:14Speaker 4: explained to her. I said, I'm gonna phone the sword.
- 16:16Speaker 4: My mistake. I'm sorry, but could she send me another one?
- 16:19Speaker 4: She said, sure, Larry, there's no problem. Well, about fifteen
- 16:23Speaker 4: minutes later is when John called Ian a different issue.
- 16:26Speaker 4: When I picked up the phone, I thought it was Ronda.
- 16:28Speaker 4: I go yes, ma'am, and I heard this pause. I
- 16:33Speaker 4: go yes, sir, he said Larry, And I said, well, John,
- 16:37Speaker 4: I had this other issue, I said, I was dealing
- 16:40Speaker 4: with Rohnda. How can you put a price from that?
- 16:43Speaker 4: Could you imagine losing a card of the big bank
- 16:48Speaker 4: of the world and it's in Wall Street or New
- 16:52Speaker 4: York or San Francisco, different time and calling and tried
- 16:55Speaker 4: to get that resolved. I mean, you would probably have
- 16:59Speaker 4: three down in two hours of your time that you'll
- 17:02Speaker 4: never get back. And it's just so convenient. And does
- 17:05Speaker 4: it come at a cost, Well, you might pay a
- 17:08Speaker 4: little bit more or you might get a little bit less.
- 17:11Speaker 4: But I don't know how you put a price from
- 17:13Speaker 4: somebody local that you can talk to. I've been around
- 17:16Speaker 4: for thirty nine years, so I'm pretty easy to find
- 17:20Speaker 4: if there is, If there is a problem. Over the
- 17:24Speaker 4: years of me buying cars, this was uncommon, but it happened.
- 17:28Speaker 4: I swear I think it happened about once a year.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Someone would lose the paperwork where they sold me their car.
- 17:35Speaker 4: It didn't come off their insurance where they paid yearly.
- 17:39Speaker 4: They forgot to call their insurance agents. So they get
- 17:41Speaker 4: built again. They call the agents, well I sold that car,
- 17:44Speaker 4: Well you didn't take it off. We need proof that
- 17:46Speaker 4: you did this or it comes up in our tax ticket.
- 17:49Speaker 4: They need proof that they did not own that car,
- 17:53Speaker 4: and they do not have the receipt that they were given.
- 17:56Speaker 4: And so they'll call me. They said, do you have
- 17:59Speaker 4: a copy yet? And you know, and I would find
- 18:02Speaker 4: it because it's not on a computer. It's in a box,
- 18:05Speaker 4: in a piece of paper in a locker room. So
- 18:07Speaker 4: I would take my time and go find it. And
- 18:10Speaker 4: I mean, I've just had this happen over the many years.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Call that one eight hundred big guy and see if
- 18:17Speaker 4: he'll do that for you. I mean, it's there is
- 18:20Speaker 4: a cost to the small entrepreneur that is still out
- 18:25Speaker 4: there working. I feel like I'm kind of like the
- 18:28Speaker 4: house builder that decided to quit building the big houses
- 18:32Speaker 4: and I'm just going to do back decks. Who better
- 18:37Speaker 4: to build your back deck? That guy built him houses
- 18:41Speaker 4: and he's doing it his time. I mean, is there
- 18:44Speaker 4: profit in it? Where there has to be profit? Because
- 18:47Speaker 4: I believe or not. I still have to pay my
- 18:48Speaker 4: insurance with my electric bill and gas bill, but I'm
- 18:51Speaker 4: not chasing that dollar. I mean, I'll be okay if
- 18:55Speaker 4: I don't buy your car.
- 18:57Speaker 3: And I really get There was a sweet spot when
- 18:59Speaker 3: I was in the book business and when I traveled
- 19:02Speaker 3: the country once. There was a sweet spot before everybody
- 19:04Speaker 3: in the world was out there going to every estate
- 19:06Speaker 3: sale and every second hand store in the world and
- 19:09Speaker 3: getting books and then put in one line and trying
- 19:11Speaker 3: to make money doing it. Well, there there was a
- 19:13Speaker 3: time when I did that and there wasn't a whole
- 19:15Speaker 3: lot of other people doing it. I did it from
- 19:16Speaker 3: a retail outlet for a long time, was very successful
- 19:19Speaker 3: doing it when I decided to travel. When I traveled
- 19:21Speaker 3: the US the first time I did it, I actually
- 19:23Speaker 3: went to places and would buy things and list them
- 19:26Speaker 3: as I was moving. I would good internet cafes, list things,
- 19:29Speaker 3: get orders, and ship them while I was on the road.
- 19:31Speaker 3: That's how I funded like traveling around the country for
- 19:33Speaker 3: three months. That's how I funded it. I didn't make
- 19:35Speaker 3: a ton of money doing it, but I funded my
- 19:37Speaker 3: light livelihood at that point in time. No overhead, no
- 19:40Speaker 3: bills to pay, no employees like I had at the
- 19:42Speaker 3: retail shop. I was just able to travel and move
- 19:45Speaker 3: and do these things. It was nice having that I
- 19:47Speaker 3: was doing the thing that I loved, but at a
- 19:49Speaker 3: smaller scale where I didn't have massive amounts of overhead.
- 19:51Speaker 3: It was nice. It was very nice.
- 19:53Speaker 4: It's satisfying when you end your career like I did.
- 19:56Speaker 4: You start sunsetting your career. You don't want to go home,
- 19:59Speaker 4: you don't want to out, you don't want to expire.
- 20:02Speaker 4: You want to still be active. So why don't you
- 20:05Speaker 4: make your job your hobby? And I don't hit this
- 20:08Speaker 4: thing hard. I still do the radio show to put
- 20:10Speaker 4: the contacts out here. I get a lot of calls
- 20:14Speaker 4: from the show and people say, I heard you and
- 20:16Speaker 4: I got a question. Mister Peyton, I think does a
- 20:19Speaker 4: good job. John Vernett does a good job. Rich client.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Rich is my neighbor. He's on Dave Island. You know,
- 20:24Speaker 4: sometimes they want to ask a question, but they feel
- 20:29Speaker 4: obligated to pay or do service with you. And I've
- 20:33Speaker 4: said this before, now that I'm not the retail dealer
- 20:37Speaker 4: out there pushing my goods, is that people will come
- 20:41Speaker 4: to me because they don't feel any obligation. You know
- 20:45Speaker 4: that I don't have the fifty sixty eighty cars in inventory,
- 20:49Speaker 4: and the salespeople and the mechanics and all floating around
- 20:52Speaker 4: and there, you know, there's waiting for the next deal.
- 20:54Speaker 4: It's just me. And there is a lot of questions
- 20:58Speaker 4: out here. Probably the most question I get is someone
- 21:01Speaker 4: either a they're selling in a state and they need
- 21:06Speaker 4: to put evaluation. I get a lot of that because
- 21:10Speaker 4: at my age now, a lot of my friends is
- 21:12Speaker 4: losing parents. You know, I've just I've hit that. And
- 21:16Speaker 4: I'm from a small area in Putnam County. This is
- 21:18Speaker 4: Scott Depot. I live in Winfield now and most people
- 21:22Speaker 4: know who I am or heard of me. So that's
- 21:24Speaker 4: a very very common question. And the other one is
- 21:28Speaker 4: what's my car worth? And that's a difficult That's a
- 21:32Speaker 4: difficult question because tell me what you're going to do,
- 21:35Speaker 4: tell me where you're going. I mean, are you putting
- 21:37Speaker 4: a for sale sign in it? Are you going to
- 21:40Speaker 4: go through all the things we have to go through
- 21:42Speaker 4: to retail it, or you just wanting to turn it
- 21:44Speaker 4: into cash. There's two answers to that question. If you
- 21:47Speaker 4: want to go through the work that's necessary and the
- 21:52Speaker 4: risk that goes along with it, and there is people
- 21:55Speaker 4: out there, and I happen to be engaged to one
- 21:57Speaker 4: of them. She just took I had a beautiful piece
- 22:00Speaker 4: of furniture, and you know I'm a man. I said, well, Kim,
- 22:04Speaker 4: just put it on Facebook and have somebody come to
- 22:06Speaker 4: the house a bite. She said, Larry, I'm a lady
- 22:09Speaker 4: and I live alone. I'm not going to do that.
- 22:11Speaker 4: I got it instantly. I wasn't thinking. I was thinking
- 22:14Speaker 4: to me, I would have no problem doing that. Well,
- 22:18Speaker 4: she's right, you do not know. I mean that we've
- 22:22Speaker 4: didn't demonstration here many times. Just off my cell phone number.
- 22:26Speaker 4: It will give you an arrow view of my home
- 22:29Speaker 4: and everything around me and my neighbors. You can go
- 22:32Speaker 4: to zoom street of you. You can look around and
- 22:36Speaker 4: see where this guy lives, this lady lives. Does she
- 22:39Speaker 4: live close to someone? Is her neighbor far off? I mean,
- 22:42Speaker 4: he just tells you so much and all you have
- 22:44Speaker 4: to do is give them a number. And so I
- 22:47Speaker 4: got it. I mean when she said that, I instantly thought,
- 22:50Speaker 4: you're right. Now I would have and I don't think
- 22:52Speaker 4: you would have. But you have a wife and child
- 22:54Speaker 4: at home. You're here, so you might be hesitant as
- 22:58Speaker 4: a matter of fact, that they are not open the
- 23:00Speaker 4: or when I'm not here, you go, they just don't
- 23:01Speaker 4: open the door. Yes, So that's unfortunately, that's the world
- 23:04Speaker 4: we live, and we lock the doors now. And when
- 23:07Speaker 4: you give that information out, how many daily reports do
- 23:12Speaker 4: you hear of national companies being hacked? And the information
- 23:18Speaker 4: just got released.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Yeah, as a matter of fact, I was just reading
- 23:21Speaker 3: a story before I came down here to start doing
- 23:23Speaker 3: our show, and I'm planning on and read it tonight
- 23:25Speaker 3: when I get home. But this investigative reporter that I
- 23:29Speaker 3: follow just got a treasure trove of some computer hacks
- 23:31Speaker 3: from nineteen ninety eight that significantly changed, especially the courses
- 23:36Speaker 3: of financial institutions the United States, completely unheard of until
- 23:40Speaker 3: this point in time, A huge foya treasure trove that
- 23:43Speaker 3: this guy unearthed, this story that has been completely unreported
- 23:45Speaker 3: on it this time. That's all I know about it.
- 23:47Speaker 3: I'm getting ready to go read more about it later
- 23:49Speaker 3: on tonight when I get home from work. But I'm
- 23:51Speaker 3: kind of fascinated on what this was that happened in
- 23:53Speaker 3: the late nineties in our online space, what became our
- 23:58Speaker 3: online space that caused all these all these issues. I'm
- 24:01Speaker 3: kind of interested to learn about this.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Well, the information highway is out there, and you know
- 24:06Speaker 4: we try to secure it in these main frames. We
- 24:10Speaker 4: have one thing about it. If I do get your information,
- 24:14Speaker 4: there's no computer. Yeah, yeah, right, he's behind a locked
- 24:17Speaker 4: door key.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Yeah right, yeah, no, no hike there, that's for sure. Hey,

- 26:36Speaker 3: got broken. I'm not really sure what happened there. John
- 26:38Speaker 3: Burdette is not here this morning. I need to go
- 26:39Speaker 3: back and figure out what is going on with that
- 26:42Speaker 3: little piece of media there. Larry Dawson, just like the

- 26:57Speaker 3: help you with decades of experience if you're looking to
- 27:00Speaker 3: navigate some of that landscape. One question I wanted to
- 27:02Speaker 3: run by you, Larry, just to tap into your experience,
- 27:04Speaker 3: and this is one of the things that Larry probably
- 27:07Speaker 3: can help with her at least have an idea. I
- 27:09Speaker 3: have a vehicle that I have to call every single
- 27:11Speaker 3: year to get the tax bill made. They don't automatically
- 27:14Speaker 3: generate it. Every year. I call them and they say
- 27:16Speaker 3: next year there won't be a problem, and then next
- 27:18Speaker 3: year there's no tax bill generated. I have to call
- 27:20Speaker 3: them get a tax bill generator. It really messes me
- 27:22Speaker 3: up and mixes me up from my taxes because your
- 27:25Speaker 3: vehicle taxes rebate. I never get my rebate because I
- 27:28Speaker 3: can never get my stuff in time to get my
- 27:30Speaker 3: rebate in Is there any magic word that I can say?
- 27:33Speaker 3: Is there like a special phrase if you have any
- 27:36Speaker 3: recommendation on how the heck to get that thing automatically done?
- 27:39Speaker 3: Cannall County.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I know you walk. I would walk that way
- 27:44Speaker 4: right with a registration card.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Try again.
- 27:47Speaker 4: I would walk in person and walk in and look
- 27:49Speaker 4: out I and whatever you all write down or the
- 27:53Speaker 4: form you fill out is make a coffee. Is That's
- 27:57Speaker 4: what I would do. I have just found frustration is
- 28:01Speaker 4: take time to go one on one, you know, with
- 28:06Speaker 4: with an effort, and normally that resolves a lot.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Of This is the most ridiculous thing in the world
- 28:11Speaker 3: because I have to do all this work to pay taxes. Yeah,
- 28:14Speaker 3: it's like I don't want to do this work. It's like,
- 28:16Speaker 3: can I send a bill to the work? Are you
- 28:17Speaker 3: kidding me? Let's just call it even you don't send
- 28:20Speaker 3: me a bill. I don't do the work and I
- 28:21Speaker 3: don't pay the tax. How does that work? You know?
- 28:23Speaker 3: I don't see in the world.
- 28:25Speaker 4: I want to compliment that you and the radio station
- 28:28Speaker 4: and the higher ups this station beautiful. I sit out
- 28:33Speaker 4: in the car today and just look. I think you
- 28:35Speaker 4: removed the treated we did.
- 28:36Speaker 3: We did a lot of landscaping aside.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Look, it just really looks good. It. I mean, I've
- 28:40Speaker 4: been coming here I think since O two and you've
- 28:44Speaker 4: made quite a transformation in this building and in the
- 28:49Speaker 4: in the business aspect of it. But it is it
- 28:52Speaker 4: really shows. I mean, it does look good. And I
- 28:55Speaker 4: know what it costs to go in and do one.
- 28:58Speaker 4: I did a major renovation, and two I was and
- 29:00Speaker 4: fifteen and I was still working. I was still starting
- 29:03Speaker 4: to buy and sell cars and operate. And you know,
- 29:06Speaker 4: there was days we didn't have air conditioning because we
- 29:08Speaker 4: was pulling one unit out and putting a new unit in.
- 29:11Speaker 4: I had a gentleman that worked at night putting a floor.
- 29:14Speaker 4: I mean it's hard to put flooring in, you know.
- 29:16Speaker 4: And you got moving parts, which is people, right, exactly right.
- 29:20Speaker 4: We got desk and chairs. We moved a section of
- 29:23Speaker 4: a wall, a huge wall to open up the showroom,
- 29:27Speaker 4: and all that with a lot of that was done
- 29:28Speaker 4: on Saturdays and Sundays, the paint work and then picking out,
- 29:31Speaker 4: and you know, on top of all that, I was busy.
- 29:35Speaker 4: But when I got done, it showed, you know, people
- 29:38Speaker 4: walking go, wow, you wasn't there a wall there? Well, yeah,
- 29:41Speaker 4: there was a wall.
- 29:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:43Speaker 4: So you have done a wonderful job. This company is
- 29:46Speaker 4: this flourished and that you can tell it from. And
- 29:48Speaker 4: I was sitting on a parking lot and I said
- 29:51Speaker 4: that landscaping that tree and it's amazing what one tree, one.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Bush definitely is that it happened wise on vacation. I
- 29:57Speaker 3: came back a tuesday to the same thing. I was like, man,
- 29:59Speaker 3: that looked so much better.
- 30:00Speaker 4: It does well, I haven't you know, I'm just doing
- 30:02Speaker 4: this once a month. So it's been a month since
- 30:04Speaker 4: I've been here, and I normally get it here early.
- 30:07Speaker 4: I was sitting out there drinking or eating my yogurt,
- 30:09Speaker 4: and I thought, what's different? Then I realized what's different?
- 30:13Speaker 4: But it's it's a very nice added touch and probably,
- 30:18Speaker 4: like my store, at one time, it was needed. You know,
- 30:21Speaker 4: I think that this is a much bigger company than
- 30:25Speaker 4: I operated, but it is a small company on a
- 30:28Speaker 4: scale of you know, we'll say, from the largest to
- 30:31Speaker 4: the smallest. Making that decision and getting everything lined up
- 30:36Speaker 4: to do it without interrupting business the best you can,
- 30:39Speaker 4: and that is very difficult. You know, if you have
- 30:42Speaker 4: the luxury of owning that lot next door, so to speak,
- 30:46Speaker 4: and build and do a tear down, that's one thing.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Nothing gets interrupted. Really, here's a moving.
- 30:53Speaker 3: Day that you flip the switch.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Basically you make a plug and plug you know you're
- 30:59Speaker 4: up and running. Well. To do that on to fly,
- 31:02Speaker 4: it's difficult.
- 31:04Speaker 3: And people don't keep it or they might have in
- 31:06Speaker 3: mind but not understand just how hard the logistics of
- 31:11Speaker 3: modifying studios seven of them. So we have seven stations
- 31:14Speaker 3: here radio station. We don't have off off hours. You know,
- 31:18Speaker 3: it's not like at midnight we play the national anthem
- 31:20Speaker 3: and we go off air for six hours. You know,
- 31:22Speaker 3: we're every one of our stations is a twenty four
- 31:24Speaker 3: hour station. Now, in technology, there are ways to offload,
- 31:28Speaker 3: you know, playlists and things like that to give the
- 31:30Speaker 3: illusion that you're still fully functioning on air when maybe
- 31:33Speaker 3: you're not necessarily at that point in time where you're
- 31:34Speaker 3: moving things over. That's all the theater of the mind.
- 31:36Speaker 3: But it is very difficult when you're doing business in
- 31:39Speaker 3: these in these studios to also be working on these
- 31:41Speaker 3: studios at the same time. That's why we had to
- 31:43Speaker 3: move people around for so long. But you're right, it was.
- 31:45Speaker 3: It was quite an effort. But it does look nice,
- 31:47Speaker 3: you know. It's always nice to see when things get
- 31:50Speaker 3: the upgrades that and everything. There's no doubt.
- 31:53Speaker 4: Well in the person now, you know, I've fortunate to
- 31:55Speaker 4: get to see the same people I've seen Jeff and
- 31:58Speaker 4: Chris for many many years. Fred. There is some that
- 32:02Speaker 4: has passed on, There is some is left or some retired.
- 32:06Speaker 4: But as you come through the door and you you
- 32:10Speaker 4: you see things, you start noticing changes, and I see
- 32:14Speaker 4: a great direction a radio stations heading, And I just
- 32:17Speaker 4: wanted to put that as a compliment because I that
- 32:21Speaker 4: once owned a store and operated it went through a simmer,
- 32:24Speaker 4: not as large change as you did.
- 32:26Speaker 3: It is very difficult, it can be, that's that's for sure.
- 32:29Speaker 3: And we appreciate people that that stuck with us as well,
- 32:32Speaker 3: because I know that times there was some some difficulties
- 32:34Speaker 3: even as clients. I mean we had years in studios
- 32:37Speaker 3: that weren't necessarily maybe up to up to stuff. I
- 32:39Speaker 3: mean there's some of that that is just the status
- 32:42Speaker 3: of the industry to some degree. But then it got
- 32:44Speaker 3: a little a little long in the tooth. So it
- 32:45Speaker 3: was nice that this stuff finally came around and we
- 32:48Speaker 3: got everything put into place the way it was supposed to.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Well, we're not in a closet no more.
- 32:51Speaker 3: No we're not. No, we've we've we've taken this this
- 32:54Speaker 3: show on the road to a lot of different places
- 32:56Speaker 3: over the time, and we've come out on the side.
- 32:59Speaker 3: I don't think we're on our our final studio yet.
- 33:00Speaker 3: I think we still have one more studio that's a
- 33:03Speaker 3: little larger than this one that's going to get dropped,
- 33:04Speaker 3: and I think we'll be able to add maybe a
- 33:06Speaker 3: video element to it if we want to, where folks
- 33:08Speaker 3: can maybe go on YouTube and stream live here in
- 33:11Speaker 3: the show or something like that. I'm working with that.
- 33:12Speaker 4: Let me tell you what I experienced yesterday, and you
- 33:16Speaker 4: probably are familiar with this. I was in a board
- 33:18Speaker 4: meeting yesterday and the board I said on and afterwards,
- 33:24Speaker 4: mayor me say walk over here and look at this,
- 33:26Speaker 4: And I said, what you got, Dave, instead of sending
- 33:30Speaker 4: me sitting there taking notes to provide us the minutes
- 33:33Speaker 4: for our next meeting. Oh yeah, yeah, he was doing
- 33:38Speaker 4: it a In other words, it was being recorded, put
- 33:42Speaker 4: together in the format for our minutes, and it was
- 33:45Speaker 4: reviewing and getting ready to you know, I guess put
- 33:48Speaker 4: it back out there. I had no idea, and I think,
- 33:52Speaker 4: and I thought about this going home. The lady that
- 33:56Speaker 4: I talked to in Bangladesh might expend it. She made
- 34:02Speaker 4: and she said this twice, that this is being recorded
- 34:05Speaker 4: and it's going to be presented to the team to
- 34:08Speaker 4: put me a package together to match Frontiers rates. So
- 34:14Speaker 4: I'm sure without a doubt that was AI. It might
- 34:17Speaker 4: have been because I was not knowledgeable until I went
- 34:20Speaker 4: through the meeting at the city that that was even
- 34:23Speaker 4: out there. It doesn't surprise me. I mean, I just
- 34:26Speaker 4: never thought about it.
- 34:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's such a strange space right now with
- 34:30Speaker 3: because what we're seeing is I was reading people in
- 34:33Speaker 3: the technology space that can express this way better than
- 34:36Speaker 3: I can. But you see something that's somewhat useful because
- 34:39Speaker 3: there's use for this AI thing, even like the minutes
- 34:41Speaker 3: that you were just on balcony. I see that as
- 34:42Speaker 3: being not overly offensive. You're recording it anyway, like I
- 34:45Speaker 3: can have just a regular recorder on my phone that
- 34:47Speaker 3: will transcribe. So then if you're just getting an LLM
- 34:49Speaker 3: and AI that is summarizing those results and not adding
- 34:52Speaker 3: anything to it, just a straight summary, that seems fairly useful.
- 34:55Speaker 3: I don't see where that's terrible. But what happens is like, Okay,
- 34:59Speaker 3: well that's useful. Let's just replace twelve employees with AI
- 35:02Speaker 3: because that works. That one thing does not mean the other.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Just because you have a narrow tool that works in
- 35:07Speaker 3: this area does not mean you can suddenly start replacing
- 35:10Speaker 3: everything and just what we were talking about, you on
- 35:12Speaker 3: your phone. That's what's happened with the phones. I don't
- 35:15Speaker 3: necessarily see anything wrong with if you're a business that's
- 35:17Speaker 3: growing and you have that first level of triage to
- 35:20Speaker 3: you to your phone system. So maybe you know, in
- 35:23Speaker 3: the old days, you had a telephany system saying if
- 35:25Speaker 3: you needed customer service here, if it's an emergency here
- 35:27Speaker 3: or whatever it might be short whole time you get
- 35:29Speaker 3: to the right department, talk to a human and you're
- 35:30Speaker 3: on your way. Not a terrible way to use quote
- 35:33Speaker 3: unquote AI you know, I mean, maybe you can't have
- 35:35Speaker 3: somebody answer the point of contact every single time. As
- 35:37Speaker 3: you're a business growing, as long as the person behind
- 35:40Speaker 3: that is a real person that takes care of the
- 35:42Speaker 3: business and stuff like that, we may have had that
- 35:44Speaker 3: sweet spot at some point in the past. The problem
- 35:47Speaker 3: is that person behind them has now been replaced. That
- 35:49Speaker 3: person behind them has now been replaced, the person behind
- 35:51Speaker 3: them now been replaced, and now it's just robots all
- 35:53Speaker 3: the way down, and we've lost all of the human
- 35:55Speaker 3: element out of it.
- 35:55Speaker 4: And where does that information go that if you're going
- 35:59Speaker 4: to sell your car, you call that big store. If
- 36:03Speaker 4: that's being recorded, and you're being transcribed. There's a lot
- 36:07Speaker 4: of information that is you and I are sitting here
- 36:10Speaker 4: talking today that we could share information, and I don't
- 36:13Speaker 4: see you taking notes or recording. I'm not taking notes
- 36:16Speaker 4: from recording. So we walk away. It becomes dust.
- 36:20Speaker 7: You know.
- 36:21Speaker 4: It's just we've had a conversations based upon your memory,
- 36:24Speaker 4: my memory of how you can conceive what I said.
- 36:28Speaker 4: But you're starting there to have it transcribed, kind of
- 36:31Speaker 4: like you're giving a testimony, and then all of a
- 36:34Speaker 4: sudden it's brought up two weeks later in print. I said, well,
- 36:39Speaker 4: you didn't say this because we have you know, and
- 36:42Speaker 4: when you go down that fine line and you're trying
- 36:45Speaker 4: to sell that car, and I said, well, you never
- 36:46Speaker 4: said anything about that right front fender being repainted, right right?
- 36:50Speaker 4: Well yeah, well no, we have it. How do you
- 36:54Speaker 4: protect yourself? And then they come back on you because
- 36:59Speaker 4: let's say airs in emissions, Well, an individual doesn't have
- 37:03Speaker 4: it in that policy I came up on. And I
- 37:08Speaker 4: don't know how this is going to end. You know,
- 37:10Speaker 4: we had a hell storm on April the fifteenth, fourteenth
- 37:13Speaker 4: or something down today's valley. Probably Dave had had some
- 37:16Speaker 4: damage because he lives in scut Depot. Don't know if
- 37:19Speaker 4: he did, but he was in that area. Those cars
- 37:23Speaker 4: that's being repaired is now hitting car fights. Yeah, with
- 37:27Speaker 4: the word moderate to severe, that's a downgrade in your valuation.
- 37:34Speaker 3: Oh yes, yeah, that's for sure.
- 37:36Speaker 4: So after the fact it's happening.
- 37:38Speaker 3: It's great information as always with Larry Dawson from larr Dawson,
